OCEAN Grove’s new pavilion hosts its first Carols in the Park next week with some exciting additions to the traditionally popular event. Families with pre-school aged children will be able to enjoy more of the Carols in the Park with the addition of a new Christmas Kids Zone on Sunday 13 December, thanks to a new sponsor in Woodlands Childcare Centre, a long-standing provider of childcare in both Ocean Grove and Point Lonsdale. Woodlands and Lonsdale House will be providing some fun festive creative activities, Christmas sensory table and opportunity for children to create a Christmas hat to wear while listening to the Carols. While staff will be available to assist families with their projects, children must be accompanied by an adult in the Kids Zone. Other firsts for 2015 include the Carols being starting earlier at 7pm after feedback from many mums and dads. Gates will open this year at 5.30pm to allow for families to access the Kids Zone and grab a snag from the Sausage Sizzle or a delicious pancake, which were a huge hit last year. Get ready to see all four of our primary schools - Ocean Grove, Surfside, Our Lady Star of the Sea and Wallington Primary School performing on stage. There’ll be all the Carols you love, sung by leading local artists and special performances that will surprise and delight with the region’s popular radio personality Mike Hyland back again as master of ceremonies. There’s still time to participate in the choir. Rehearsals will be held on Sunday 29 November and Sunday 6 December, and interested people can register their interest with the artistic director Jon Mamonski on 0419 507 513. Thanks to the support of the Ocean Grove Connected Communities, safe LED candles will again be available

for purchase at each of the entry gates on the night. This year, gate proceeds will go towards buying a defibrillator for the new Ocean Grove Pavilion - an important contribution that will benefit all event-goers into the future. Locals are also invited to bring an unwrapped gift to put under a giant Christmas tree on the night, which will be distributed to local needy children

by Cottage by the Sea. The much-loved Carols in the Park continues to be the largest community gathering of the year, with more than 3000 people attending last year’s event. There is still an opportunity for local businesses to join up as sponsors for the event, and they are welcome to contact sponsorship co-ordinator Julia Keady on 0412 628 036.

1207374-KK48-15

The Carols in the Park are only possible because of generous supporters and sponsors including City of Greater Geelong, Ocean Grove Connected Communities, Ocean Grove Combined Churches, The Dove Shop - Uniting Church, Ocean Grove Voice, RT Edgar Real Estate, Vines Lawyers, Van Loons Nursery, Bellarine Memories, Paxton Press, Bakers Delight Marketplace, Marketplace Square, Westpac Ocean Grove, Ocean Grove Bowling

Club, Wallington’s WRG, Woodlands and Lonsdale House, and Hayden Real Estate. Mark your calendars and diaries today for 7pm Sunday 13 December at Ocean Grove Park, Corner President Avenue and Draper Street, and get ready to enjoy the spirit of Christmas with your community. OCEAN Grove volunteer Pam Healy received an honourary lifemembership to Parkinson’s Victoria last month, after 15 years supporting patients and their families. Pam received the award humbly, saying it’s just what she does. “I felt like I didn’t deserve it - it’s just me,” she said. “I have a skill for identifying with people and making them feel special.” Neither Pam nor her husband Russell have been affected by the disease, making her years of service even more selfless. Pam moved to Ocean Grove in 1999 and said she “fell into” her role at the Bellarine Self Help Parkinson’s Group, after falling ill. While she was being treated in Point Lonsdale, she noticed a poster calling for volunteers and decided to join a few different groups. “Because they looked after me so

well,” she said. Pam started off as an assistant for the Parkinson’s group and stepped up when the original organiser moved on. Since then she’s been organising outings for the group, and guest speakers, including neurosurgeons, physios and even RACV driving specialists. The most important part of Pam’s work is pointing people “in the right direction” when they need help and just being there to listen. “These people have become more like extended family,” she said. “A lot of them struggle to talk to their families - they can be honest with me.” Parkinson’s Victoria board member Professor David Finkelstein presented Pam the award at the organisation’s AGM on November 26. Her husband Russell also received a Certificate of Appreciation for supporting Pam and the group over the 15 years.

New Year, new traffic lights By LUKE VOOGT

VICROADS plans to begin construction on the Marlin Drive-Tuckfield Street intersection early next year, after recently putting the project out to tender. South Western acting regional rirector Nigel Powers said VicRoads had reacted in response to community concerns. “New traffic lights will provide a safer crossing for pedestrians and school children,” he said. “It will improve safety and traffic flow for all road users in this popular tourist town, especially during peak periods.” VicRoads expects to start construction in late January, which will take about five months to complete. “We have completed the design process with our road safety specialists,” Mr Powers said. Vicroads will remove some trees for the works, to provide drivers with a safer sight distance approaching the intersection. VicRoads and the council have agreed to replace them with mature trees of the same variety once the works are complete. Residents in the immediate area impacted by the works will receive a letter from VicRoads shortly, outlining the proposed upgrades. VicRoads will build minor footpath connections as a part of the project and the council will be responsible for their ongoing maintenance. “We thank the community in advance for their patience during construction,” Mr Powers said.

Gifts for those when trouble strikes By LUKE VOOGT

BELLARINE locals are driving a growing grassroots movement to support domestic violence victims, donating hundreds of much-needed items to Geelong Womens Refuge. Ocean Grove grandmother Diane Wallace has been co-ordinating the effort since May, donating to the refuge and other support agencies. Diane insists she just collects the items, and rather it’s the generosity of locals which helps provide this vital support. “I am just a drop off point really,” she said. “The people of Ocean Grove and the Bellarine have been fantastic.” Diane said the items provided much needed practical support to victims of domestic violence. “I just started doing this because I thought there’s a need,” she said. “People have got shampoos they never use in their draws - people can use that.” Diane regularly gets several boxes of items donated at her house, with single donors donating dozens of boxes in one go. “There are lots of people who help out, too many to name actually,” she said. “People want to give directly - that’s what I’ve found.” Barwon South West Homelessness Network co-ordinator Andrew Edgar visits Diane often. He said his network of contacts among homelessness and domestic violence agencies mean the items get to those who need them. “It’s great to catch up with Di - the generosity and enthusiasm of people on the Bellarine is amazing,” he said. “I’m finding I’m able to deliver these items to clients on regular basis.”

Dianne Wallace and Barwon South West Homelessness Network co-ordinator Andrew Edgar with this week’s collection of donated goods. 148054

Andrew said people are extremely grateful receiving “basic necessities”. “People really appreciate the practicality of it,” he said. Andrew said there has always been great support for victims of domestic violence in the community, but it had been occurring in “little pockets”. “This is about streamlining it and making it more transparent,” he said. Andrew said the collection also gave him the chance to educate the community on domestic violence. “I think people are hearing a lot more about it in the media now,” he said. “But people still struggle to understand how to get involved and help.”

A gutless attack He had been texting his girlfriend, when he heard footsteps quicken behind him. “He had literally just sent her a text - which is how we know when it happened,” she said. “He thinks there were two of them - as he put his head up he got hit.” Her son said one of the men, who he believed were in their early twenties, hit him in the right eye. “He said he heard them laughing as they ran off,” Angie said. Her son remembers trying “to fall forward”, rather than backwards, to

prevent a serious injury. He then recovered enough to stagger home. The boy suffered a black eye and minor injuries. Angie said she didn’t know her son had decided to walk home and that parents should encourage children to let them know of their whereabouts. “We had a conversation about sending a message,” she said. “He’s 17 and he’s quite a big kid, so you wouldn’t think it would be an issue.”

AN Ocean Grove mum has spoken out after her 17-year-old son was allegedly coward-punched on his way home from work this month. Angie, who preferred not give her full name, said the attack could have been fatal or caused serious injury to her son. “Targeting a teenager on his way home from work is just bizarre - it’s cowardly,” she said. “There have been so many high profile instances with people throw-

ing one punch, where someone has died.” Angie said the attack occurred after her son had finished work at a local restaurant. “Normally, we pick him up from work,” she said. “He finished early, so rather than bother me he thought he’d walk home - we’re just five minutes walk from his work.” Angie said her son was walking down Presidents Avenue, halfway between Madeley Street and Ocean Grove Park, at 9.05pm.

CAMPSITE operators from around Victoria travelled to Ocean Grove Fire Station last month for the brigade’s annual campsite training. Organiser and local caravan park operator, Dave Wynn, said there were 80 people there, from as far as Bendigo, Colac and the Mornington Peninsula. “It’s a hands-on day that gives park operators a chance to use fire equipment,” he said. “It gives them a chance to prepare before summer.” Dave said the event

had grown substantially from its initial attendance of 15 people nine years ago. Local firefighter Matthew Geerings put the participants through their paces in using hoses, fire blankets and extinguishes during the day’s practical component. Ocean Grove Fire Brigade Captain Steve Gibbs nominated the program for a CFA Fire Awareness Award this year. Dave said it had made the top 10 so far, out of more than 80 nominations around the Victoria.

SURFSIDE Primary’s (SPS) greenthumbed students celebrated last month as the school won a statewide award for its garden. SPS won the Best Garden in the state for a primary school of more than 280 students at the Victorian School Garden Awards. “We’re delighted - it’s the first time we’ve entered as far as I’m aware,” garden co-ordinator Rachel Ford said. “We knew we had a good garden, but it’s lovely to receive the award.” The garden culture is rubbing off on students like Emma, who grows a variety of vegetables at home. The Grade 3 student urged her parents to build a vegetable garden when they moved house recently.

“I really like it - it’s one of my hobbies at home,” she said. Grade 4 student Marnea also has a garden at home, but only grows tomatoes and potatoes, because the family rabbit tears into anything else. “The bunny doesn’t eat them,” she said. Rachel thanked parents, grandparents, Rotary members and community volunteers for their help with the garden. “It’s their input that makes the garden so good,” she said. “If anyone would like to join our volunteer team, we’d love to hear from them.” The school originally entered one of five categories: the Best Edible Garden. It went on to win out of all five

Emma (Grade 3) and Marnea (Grade 4) with some fresh produce. 147923 categories in south-west Victoria and then in the whole state. The school won $350 for the regional award and $1500 for the state award, which it will put towards the garden. The Victorian School Garden Awards took place on 26 November at the Royal Botanical Gardens.

MORE than 180 blokes swarmed on the Flying Brick Cider House for the 12th annual Movember Gentlemen of Geelong lunch, which raised more than $20,000. It was a fun-filled day with prizes for best and worst mo, guest speakers and fund-raising auction items going under the hammer. Even a couple of Geelong Cats footballers were auctioned off as part of a golf package - all in support of the men’s health. Guys came from all over the state to attend the event, the second time it has been held at the Flying Brick, including farmers in particular who see it as a good excuse to catch up with old friends and school mates. The speaker was Sue Brumby from the National Centre for Farmer

Health who touched of the very real issue of farmer suicide. Depression and suicide was an issue that had touched a lot of attendees and the backbone of the lunch was to encourage men to think and talk more about traditional ‘no go’ areas, recognise signs in themselves and others and work on prevention. All funds raised go to Movember, plus the boys’ 2015 selected charities the National Centre for Farmer Health, Headspace Geelong and Lifeline. Anyone wanting to donate to this great cause just go to www. au.movember.com and type in Gentlemen of Geelong then select their man to donate to.

Grove goes troppo By LUKE VOOGT LIZ and Tony Cavanagh may have Ocean Grove’s first ever home-grown pineapple sitting in their backyard. The tropical fruit is the product of two years of growing by the couple, who have been in Ocean Grove since 1978. “I think it’s the first and only one here,” Tony said. The couple grew the plant in a pot from the top of a pineapple they bought at a local store. They kept the growing plant in a friend’s glass house during winter, to protect it from frost. “There are people around here that grow bananas,” Liz said.

“I thought if they grow bananas we can jolly-well grow pineapples!” “I’ll let you know what it tastes like when we eat it,” Tony added. “It might be terrible.” Ocean Grove Communality Garden chairman Andrew Scott said it was the first pineapple he heard of in the town. He said they were rarely seen outside of tropical climates in Australia. “That’s not to say you can’t grow it here but it requires a lot of care,” he added. Have you go got any food that defies the odds in your backyard? If so, email the Voice at journo@coeangrovevoice.com.

Octogenarians hit out on the greens Ocean Grove octogenarians converged on the green last month last month for the Bowling Club’s annual over-80s event. Event organiser Terry Tinkler said 16 people showed up for the event, while three opted to bowl. “It’s just to invite the retired bowlers back to the club for a free lunch - and some bowls if they’re able,” he said. Ted Mohn, 85, was one of those bowlers. Ted is still bowling, but left the club 10 years ago when he moved to Geelong. “I have a lot of happy memories here,” he said. “It’s lovely to come back and see all the old faces again - although I suppose I should call them ‘older’ faces now.”

OCEAN Grove Primary School (OGPS) launched its Active Travel Pathways last month, to encourage students to walk, ride, scoot and skate together to school. Hundreds of students made their way to school on 25 November, using the new designated pathways. “We were lucky with the weather,” OGPS Active travel co-ordinator and teacher Andy McNeilly said. Andy said the paths were all about getting students more active. “There’s a lot of research that if kids use active transport, they are more switched on and ready to learn,” he said. “At the moment about 50 per cent of students use active travel - we would like to increase that.” Andy said the school’s committee captains and Bicycle Network Victoria designed the paths to be as safe as possible. “These four routes take into account where the majority of our students live,” he said. OGPS and Bicycle Network marked the pathways around Ocean Grove with stickers and distance markers during the last few months. Bicycle Network awarded the school a grant for the project in March. Andy thanked the OGPS community and Geelong Council for their support.

version of an existing truck bay into a training room. David said the shed would help the unit cope with the Bellarine’s increasing population, as well as its own expanding membership, now at 43. Bellarine SES received a $150,000 grant from the Victorian Government for the shed. The unit raised the remainder of the funds, from tin rattles and tins placed around local businesses. “We had to contribute a fair bit ourselves,” David said.

WORKERS began construction on Bellarine SES’s new shed last week, which members hope will increase its ability to respond to local emergencies. Fund-raising officer David Pytellek was at the Bellarine headquarters last week as the framework went up. He said the new shed would include four truck bays and a maintenance area. “Hopefully in a couple of weeks the she’ll be done,” he said. David said the previous shed had been cluttered, making it difficult to get specialist equipment out for missions. “A lot of what we do is ‘time critical’,” he said. Deputy Controller of Training Renie Mitchell said the new shed would mean less delays and faster responses to local emergencies. “We couldn’t get a lot of stuff out quickly because there was no room,” she said. “Hopefully when it’s finished it will be lot easier to access equipment, and we’ll be able to just hook it up and go.” The works also include the con-

Lions Club vice-president Brenda Walter.

OCEAN Grove Barwon Heads (OGBH) Lions Club has started its annual Christmas Cake sale this month, to raise funds for the local community. Sale organiser Don Smith said the club had been selling Christmas cakes since he joined 16 years ago. “I think it’s been going for 25 years,” he said. The club sold 682 1.5kg cakes, 92 1kg cakes and 57 puddings in Ocean Grove last year.

“We sold an ungodly amount last year - about $4000 worth!” OGBH Lions Club vice-president Brenda Walter said. Brenda said every member of the Ocean Grove Lions Club got a box of cakes to sell, with the proceeds going back to the community. “We also sell them at shops around Ocean Grove,” she said. “Van Loons has been one of our best sellers for many years.” Don said the sale normally raised about $1600 for the club. Some of this, he said, went to-

wards five $200 scholarships for primary school students from around Ocean Grove. With Christmas approaching, the club is also ramping up its monthly food bank program, making 30 hampers for those in need. The hampers will be distributed by five local charity agencies at Christmas. Don encouraged local families to donate non-perishable food at the club’s donation box at Woolworths Ocean Grove. “If they want to buy two boxes

of Wheaties and leave one in the donation box that would be good,” he said. Brenda wanted to thank Don, who is retiring from the club next year, for his years of work with the cake sale. “This was his baby,” she said. “If it wasn’t for him, many of us wouldn’t do it.” Lions Club International began selling the cakes in 1965, raising in excess of $50m for medical programs and other charitable causes.

BOUNDARY RE-ALIGNMENT OCEAN GROVE / WALLINGTON Council recommended at its Council meeting of 17 November to commence the process of investigation into the re-alignment of the locality boundary of Ocean Grove / Wallington. The current alignment is dissecting properties into two separate localities and may cause confusion with property owners and emergency services.

Roots go way back GUESTS at Van Loons 50th birthday got more than a potted history of the nursery last weekend. Original family members Tony, Herman and Lou van Loon all journeyed back to give locals an insight to the pioneering days of 1960s Wallington. More than 100 guests heard how their parents snapped up and cleared a parcel of land that was to become one of Australia’s best known garden growers and retailers. Jane Edmanson was the MC and, joined by current owner Heidi Martin, the three brothers talked about the wildlife, their takes on the latest plants and whether they had continued their gardening interests during life after Van Loons. Heidi said afterwards: “It was a proud day yesterday as we celebrated 50 years. Philip and I were thrilled to welcome so many of the van Loon family who had travelled from as far away as WA, as well as crowds of locals who have enjoyed the nursery both past and present. It was lovely to hand over the three $500 gift voucher prizes to long-standing customers, we hope they have lots of fun with them. The nursery looked beautiful and the cafe was pumping thanks to our team of fabulous staff, all in all it was a brilliant day”.

An advertisement regarding this proposal was placed in the Geelong Independent on Friday 27 November and the Geelong Advertiser on Saturday 28 November 2015 inviting submissions, in favour or against the proposal. Submissions regarding this proposal are to be received by close of business 4 January 2016. Further information regarding this proposal can be found on www.geelongaustralia.com.au in the “Have Your Say” section.

Aquatic centre wins platinum By LUKE VOOGT

Community Safety Portfolio holder, Councillor Jan Farrell, was thrilled that BASC was one of just 16 aquatic centres in Victoria to receive the award. “I’d like to congratulate all the staff at BASC - this is a fantastic achievement and is thoroughly deserved,” she said. “BASC is committed to community water safety and to providing the highest quality swim programs to over

BELLARINE Aquatic and Sports Centre (BASC) has received Life Saving Victoria’s (LSV) Platinum Pool award for the fourth year running. BASC received the Platinum Pool award after undergoing a series of assessments for LSV’s public pools safety criteria, scoring an outstanding 99.3 percent.

1500 ‘Swim and Survive’ students and 15 local schools’ ‘Learn to Swim’ programs.” BASC participated in Water Safety Week which ran from 29 November to last Sunday. Students participated in a range of water-safety activities with a focus on survival skills. “Water Safety Week brings together

lifesaving clubs and aquatic facilities to promote water safety across all of our waterways,” Cr Farrell said. Cr Farrell said Water Safety Week was a timely reminder for parents to be vigilant when watching kids around water. “If you have to leave the water for any reason at all - make sure you take your children with you,” she said.

Cr Farrell said it was not only children who are at risk around water. “We’ve seen a marked increase in drownings in certain adult age groups, so we’re urging everyone to take care, know their limits and never swim alone,” Cr Farrell said. New tours from Grove

CHRISTIAN’S Bus Company launched its brand new tour bus last Friday, offering locals four new tours departing from Ocean Grove. The company showcased the new coach to more than 100 people gathered at the Leopold Sportmans Club. “We aim to deliver a lot more coach tour options for people of the Bellarine,” Christian’s Bus owner Angus Christian. During the day the company launched new tours to Merimbula, Canberra, the Hunter Valley, Cobram and Barooga, and Broken Hill, for next year. Angus said the new destinations seemed popular with the locals, as he made several bookings on the day.

Mex to re-open - with love By LUKE VOOGT AARON Darcy put an end to months of rumours last week, announcing that he would reopen The Mex - as The Mex! “I just got the keys yesterday,” he told the Voice last Friday. “But it’s been in the works for the last month or so.” Aaron’s father Laurie, and uncle and local identity Frank Filia, first opened the iconic restaurant in the early 1990s. Laurie and Frank retired about 13 years ago, selling the restaurant to local firefighter Alistair Drayton.

The store closed earlier this year, sending rumours flying, with locals guessing anything from a McDonald's to a drivethrough coffee shop would replace it. But after a stint in the New Zealand Army and working in the finance industry, Aaron has returned to “bring back the old Mex”. “I saw it was for sale and thought it would be great idea to re-open it,” he said. “There’s a lot of love for The Mex.” Aaron remembers working nearly a decade growing up in

the restaurant’s kitchen, front of house and bar. “It’s in my blood,” he said. “In the last few years I thought my passion lies in hospitality.” Aaron said he planned to serve the restaurant’s original menu and hoped to re-open it before Christmas, for the holiday crowd. “I want to give locals The Mex experience they remember from when my family ran the restaurant,” he said. “It’s an iconic establishment that everyone remembers fondly.”

Drugs, traffic charges after erratic driving By LUKE VOOGT POLICE arrested a man in Arlington Crescent last week, after he allegedly drove a stolen Camry erratically around Ocean Grove’s CBD. Police charged the 20-yearold man with theft of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and possession of cannabis and methamphetamine (ice) on 30 November. Police also believe the man was displaying false number plates. Bellarine police Sergeant Mick Knight said a father and daughter saw the man driving the silver Toyota Camry sedan

erratically in Coles carpark. “They thought it was a young driver,” he said. “They last saw him driving down The Terrace.” Police went to an Arlington Crescent address where they located the car and arrested the man. The man was bailed to appear at the Geelong Magistrates' Court later this month. IN other news, residents spotted a red Commodore in Omega Drive at 4pm on Wednesday 2 December, which had been reported stolen from Norlane. One resident was in their

backyard when the driver, believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, knocked on their door. When the resident went to answer their door, the driver jumped back into the car and sped off. Sgt Knight said the youth was most likely ‘casing’ houses along Omega Drive and warned residents to be vigilant. The registration of the car is XRC 085. Anyone with more information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

39 years said she rarely needed to go into the city. “I don’t like going into Geelong anymore,” she said. “Ocean Grove’s got just about everything except for electrical - and it’s just a nicer atmosphere.” Judy thanked all the sponsors. “I encourage everyone in Ocean Grove to shop locally,” she said.

Juliet McGee with her dad Travis. 148041 THE Voice congratulated its smallest and probably cutest Shop Local Winner last Friday, five-year-old Queenscliff girl Juliet McGee. Juliet had been playing at home with her friend Maddie, when she got the phone call for the winning prize. “She said I was going to be famous,” she said.

Juliet’s father Travis took her to the Voice offices to pick up the award - which included a $250 voucher from major sponsor Van Loons. “She was very excited,” he said. “Her mum’s thinking of exchanging some money for that voucher to get some plants.”

Busy birds as silly season approaches By JEN CARR IT’S been a very busy few weeks, with the ‘silly season’ getting into full swing. I’ll have to see how many bird books I can buy the family for Christmas - I’m sure my daughters will appreciate them greatly (not!). I’ve spent a bit of time looking at Lake Connewarre on my way to work, and I’ve seen many whiskered terns there. I’ve also seen whiskered terns at the Western Treatment Plant, the Barwon River Estuary and Swan Bay. I thought I’d write about terns over the next few weeks, as there are quite a few species of terns seen around the Bellarine. I’m by no means an expert on tern ID (in fact it’s sometimes hard for me to ID even a common bird correctly sometimes - argh!), but it’s great to ‘have a go’ and if I’m wrong, then so be it. Whiskered terns seem to always be in perpetual motion, and they can be seen fluttering across swampy areas, and diving into the water to feed on insects, crustaceans, fish and other small vertebrates (including frogs) from the surface of the water. They are very hard to photograph when they are zipping around. At this time of the year, in breeding season, the underparts of whiskered terns are dark grey, the undertail is white, there is a black cap on the top

of the head from the eye to the nape, and the underwings mostly white. The eye is brown and the bill and legs are red. The tail is slightly forked. The birds are around 25cm in length and the wingspan is approximately 78cm. Whiskered terns are usually found in large flocks which can be mixed with other species of terns. I spotted a small flock resting at Swan Bay on a windy day this week, and they were much easier to photograph when they were still. I’ve been keeping an eagle eye out for some more young birds over the past few weeks, and haven’t been disappointed. Pete and Chris have at least one young kookaburra in their backyard nest, and the youngster has been seen coming to the edge of the nest, but it is not ready to fly as yet. The two Woodlands tawny frogmouth chicks have been located, and they are doing really well. The other tawny family that I have been observing in Ocean Grove with two chicks are also just beautiful. The tawnies can be seen roosting on dead branches are blending in perfectly with their surroundings. I observed a young grey fantail being fed by its parent birds near Minya Winery. Grey fantails are lovely little social birds that never seem to sit still (especially when they are being photographed). Grey fantails

are found throughout Australia in most treed habitats. Another young bird I saw was a Eurasian coot at the Jerringot Wetlands in Geelong. I think that Eurasian coots must be one of the most common birds around these parts. They can be seen in almost any waterway or lake. The young coot had light grey feathers rather than the sooty grey colour of an adult bird. I was walking in the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve last week with Kevin when we saw three young black-faced cuckoo shrikes. They also are a much paler grey colour than the adult birds, and have less black colouring on their face. I’ve also been observing the Australasian grebe family at the Begola Wetlands and the three chicks seem to be thriving. It’s always great to see birds doing so well and looking so healthy. Just a reminder for everyone to keep their dogs under control on the beach and around water. Every time I go down to the Barwon River Estuary at the end of Lelean Street there are no birds to see as there are dogs running along the sand. This is despite the big sign that says ‘No Dogs’. If only dogs could read, maybe they would obey the signs better than people do. Enjoy some Christmas cheer over the next few weeks. Jen Carr jencarr@y7mail.com

BARWON COAST MEET THE NEIGHBOURS COMMUNITY DAY Barwon Coast in partnership with Ocean Grove Coastcare and Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine held a community ‘Meet the Neighbours’ event along Ocean Grove beach. The event provided interactive ways to learn more about our wildlife and responsible pet ownership. Local dog training school Jimmy’s Dog Training were on hand to provide free advice to those needing a hand. DOG ON BEACHES • Our Dog Control Orders change again on December 18th. Changes to note are: o Westward from 13W-Hodgson Street all the way to the Bridges and along the river flat to Lelean Street dogs are now prohibited; and o At 7W Collendina access and between accesses 34W to 35W, dogs are prohibited unless transiting through and then must be on a lead. o from 27W to Talbot Street Barwon Heads dogs are now prohibited. o All trails within Barwon Coast land is dogs on leash, including all car parks and beach access points. Please contact the Barwon Coast office for a Dog Control Brochure. o Eastward from Collendina, along City of Greater Geelong’s Buckley Park beach, controls for wildlife protection from 6W dogs on a leash. COASTAL EROSION Ocean Grove Main Beach dunes had been substantially eroded. As a short term rehabilitation Barwon Coast are undertaking protection works at the toe of the initial 50 metres east of the ramp. A major escarpment replenishment program that has involved the use of geo textile sand bags and shifting over 1,000 cubic metres of sand off the beach will improve the resilience of the beach and dune interface. We ask that the community keep off the face of the slopes as it will be unconsolidated and hazardous. PLAT IT SAFE BY THE WATER As we move into our summer beach season it is important to always swim between the flags at our locally patrolled beaches - Ocean Grove Main, Ocean Grove Spit 18W and 13th Beach Main where Life Savers & Lifeguards will be on patrol 7 days a week, for the peak holiday covering week from Boxing day to Australia day. At all beach access pathways we have installed Beach Safety Signs that provide advice on general water conditions, rocks, tide etc and where the nearest patrolled beach is. Please take time to read those notices. Always be alert on the beach when with children and never swim alone.

No diving / jumping from jetty, promenade or bridge Tragically serious incidents have occurred in recent summers so it is really important to take personal responsibility for your safety when near the water, be it at the ocean or the river beaches. Dangerous activities such as jumping or diving off the Barwon Heads jetty, the promenade or the bridge can lead to serious injury especially back injuries. This year we have seen massive movement of sands along the beaches and at low river flows the water depth can be minimal, especially at low tide near the Jetty, so don’t do it! SUMMER SHUTTLE BUS Leave your car at home or your caravan park and catch the free shuttle bus coordinated by Barwon Coast with financial support from valuable community aware sponsors. The free bus is operating from 27th December until 26th January commencing at 10am thru to 6pm with an hourly lap of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and the beaches starting at the Ocean Grove Post Office. The Shuttle Bus tows a trailer to carry beach gear including surf boards. RIP TO RIVER FUN RUN AND WALK The 35th annual Rip to River Fun Run and Walk will be held on Saturday 2nd January 2015, starting at Point Lonsdale. There are also shorter events including a Nipper Fun Run at the Ocean Grove Main Beach. Barwon Coast is pleased to be a major sponsor of the event, the Fun Run is a major fund raising community event for the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club and registrations can be made directly on the clubs website: www.riptoriver.oceangroveslsc.asn.au

Cobra Under 13s juniors win Compiled by Des Every Under 17s The fourth placed Under 17 combine this game hosted third placed St Joseph’s Thomas in this round 6 two day clash at the Memorial Reserve. It is a must win game as the top five sides are all locked on 24 points in this incredibly even competition. The toss was won by the home side and they elected to bat. Sam Beasley and Sam Walsh opened and got the combine off to a solid start with an opening 29 run stand. Beasley was dismissed for 11. Logan Taylor joined Walsh and got the score to 62 before Walsh was dismissed for 16. Taylor top scored with 29 while Lachlan Madden made 11, Lachlan Hooper (16), Zach Walter (12) and Fletcher Long (19). A lot of good starts from the top seven but the coaching staff would be disappointed with no one going on to make a big score against a strong opposition. After 54 overs the combine managed to be all out for 147. It would take some defending. The bowling would have to be good along with the fielding. Neither were quite up to it on this occasion. Lachlan Madden was solid with 3/24 off 6 overs. Sam Harper took 2/19 off 5 overs and Fletcher Long 1/46 off his 9 overs. The wickets were scarce on this occasion and St Joseph’s made it to a very impressive 6/242 off 55 overs. The combine is still in touch and will bounce back. Under 13s The fourth placed Cobras host the sixth placed Drysdale Brown in this two day clash at the Snake Pit. The Snakes need a win to keep in touch with with the Grubbers, Coutas and Lions who form the top three. Charlie Every won the toss and sent the Hawks in to bat. This decision proved to be beneficial as the Hawks were kept to a miserly total of 1/44 off their 26 overs. The only wicket the Cobras could get was a run out with Spencer Bryan and Charlie Every combining. The Cobras

Under 17 combined Cobras/Grubbers wicketkeeper Craig Goodger flies high for the ball. 148078

Under 17 Collendina/Ocean Grove junior cricketer Sam Walsh comes in to bowl. 148078 replied with a strong 2/94 after the first day with Izaak Terhorst making a very aggressive 30 runs and having to be retired along with Xavier Norman who also had to be retired after a very calculated and supportive 10 runs. Charlie Every was also solid with a well made 16 and was the first wicket to fall with the score on 94. Day two saw the Drysdale bowling attack tighten the screws, The Cobras' run rate was almost 1 run per over on the second day until Spencer Bryan and Tom Gross took hold of proceedings. Bryan made a fine 11 while Gross

made 19 and helped get the score to 168. Day two saw some great bowling with Charlie Every taking 3/8 off six overs, some great fielding with four run outs and two of them being direct hits by Xavier Norman with the keeping gloves on and Ned Poynder with his rocket arm. Izaak Terhorst also chipped in with one wicket as did Ned Poynder with the help of the sticky fingered Tom Gross. Sam Donegan also took a fine catch. The Hawks made it to 91 which wasn’t enough. A very convincing win for the Under 13s.

Grove is back Compiled by Matt Flapper

OCEAN Grove’s number one Saturday pennant side responded to a disappointing fortnight of matches in the best way possible with a come from behind win against Lara. Coming off a fortnight of back to back losses to the two promoted sides from Division One City Oval and Torquay the Premier Division team needed to find something extra. Playing on their own green the Grovers desperately needed a win to stay in touch with the top four and rallied with only 20 ends left in the match to take the honours by 10 shots. The win was one of the toughest this year and crucial in terms of the seasons goals. A win next week against City Of Geelong will see a place back in the top four. Another 16 points to top of the table Division Two in their home match against Belmont locks the team nearly two games clear on top as we approach the Christmas break. The hunger and determination from this group is on show and solid performances from each rink over the past few weeks has everything on track for a finals hit-out. Peter Jolley along with Peter Patterson, Alan Grainger and Lorraine Myers established a half-time lead of 23-3 and continued with that momentum as they cruised to a 33-10 finishing score line. Mick Tull led his side to an equally impressive 34-17 result while Warren Davis could not hit the 40 mark three weeks in a row

and had to settle for 30-12. A first versus second match-up looms next Saturday for the Division Three team when they will go head to head with Clifton Springs. Both sides travelling extremely well this year will face off for top spot on the ladder. Coming off a loss to Lara away but managing three rink wins in the process holds the team in good stead as they fight for pole position. Fair to say it will be game on. Andrew Johnston and Jim Rogan both skipped their team to an overall victory against Portarlington in their round eight away match. Three wins from the last four matches has the team slowly climbing the ladder now in sixth but only six points outside the top four. Jill Dwyer, John Hoult, Reg Hungerford and Dave Stonehouse found A’Green to their liking as their half time score indicated. 36-13 at smoko ensured the overall scoreboard was in favour of the home side. A rare feat of scoring an eight was included the first half domination in this team and they were able to go on with the win 46-21. A valuable 14 points jumped the sevens into the top four. Finals bound if their form continues will be the result for the eight, nine and 10 sides. Three wins from the last four in the eights, five wins from the last five matches in the nines and back to back wins in the tens. Phil Lock 36-20 led the eights, both Dave Harvey and Graeme Constable with Rink wins in the nines

and Ian Maxi Walker enjoyed his game skipping with Gary Franklin, Ralph Skipper and Stan Chivilo triumphing 3216. Two teams top of the table in Midweek as we hit the halfway mark and it's Division One and Three at the helm. A big win on the road at Bannockburn in the ones 96-53 jumped them to pole position as they look to tackle Torquay away next week. Division Three with seven wins and a draw from eight games will want to bounce back from their first loss this year to Leopold. A win away versus Bareena will be the best way to return to the winners list. The twos couldn’t contain a strong Belmont team as the loss slipped them back a peg to eighth. Bell Post Hill away is the first step to climbing back up the ladder and Val Cook, Barb Gilbert and Val Crumbie will certainly lead that charge. A couple of wins each to the fours and sevens prior to the break will most likely be enough to hold a top four spot. The fours will want back to back wins after a demolition of Anglesea last week were all three teams put on a clinic. Sue Gorwell plus 25, Lorraine Vincent plus 26 and Judith Bradley plus 20 never let their opposition have a sniff and had the pedal to the metal for the full 25 ends of the match. For Division Five it’s one game at a time and no better way to start their climb from 10th with a win against Clifton Springs at home on Tuesday.

Time to Rip it all up Mel is best THE countdown is on for this summer’s 36th Rip to River. Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club’s biggest annual fund-raiser will be held on Saturday 2 January. Last month, Ocean Grove-based gun middle distance runner James Dalton (pictured here) crossed the line in sixth place at the 12km Run Geelong event. Dalton, expected to be one of the front runners in next month’s 10km Rip to River race, said the postChristmas sand-based fun run was a special event. “It means a lot actually because I have grown watching up the Rip to River and I have lived across the road from the beach all my life and still do,” Dalton said. “You always like to do well at your home event.” The 36-year-old crossed the line in sixth place in 35:26 at last summer’s Rip to River 10km race. Dalton said he was hoping to break the elu-

sive 35-minute barrier at next month’s 10km run. “This summer, I would like to break 35 minutes and get something in the low 34 minutes, but it is all depending on the conditions,” he said. “It is battle against the clock for me. “I am looking forward to day.” In other news, registrations have opened for the Rip to River event, to enter head to www.oceangroveslsc.asn.au for more information. All 5km and 10km entrants for Rip to River 2016 receive a free draw string bag and drink bottle. Online registration prices start at $45 for adults to compete and $50 for on-the- day registrations. For juniors under the age of 17, entry is $25 online and $30 for on the day registrations. Weekend watchers: surf patrol starts COOLISH weather temperatures greeted Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club lifesavers when the opening weekend of surf patrol kicked off on 28 and 29 November. Club president Steve Peatling said the new season was a quiet start for lifesavers across the club’s first two days of weekend surf patrol. “It was quiet given the weather, it was pretty cool on the beach on that weekend with those on-shore breezes,” Peatling told the Voice. “It kept traffic down to a minimum for surf patrol, but they did a fair bit of patrolling up and down the beach in the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) but as a general rule it was pretty quiet.” Lifesaver patrols at Ocean Grove Main Beach will continue each weekend until after Easter break in April next year. Patrol hours are every Saturday 12.45pm to 5.30pm and Sundays and public holidays from 9.45am to 5pm.

SOUL Longboard Club held its final wrap of the year at the main beach rotunda last weekend. Among the highlights of the day was the awarding of the first Dave Boyd Best Club Person to Melanie Renton-Wright. Mel, like Dave, does a lot for the local community and in particular for junior surfers and women’s comps. The club also made a special presentation to Nev Foster for the work he has done in making a new competition lights and horn system. The winner of the 4D surfboard members draw was Mitch, who snapped his board last week. The season aggregate winners were as follows: Cadets: Millie, Makala, Meka. Junior Girls: Morgan Griggs Kennelly, Shannon Firns, Abby Firns, Meka. Junior Boys: Zeph Lampard, Billy Whitton, Mateo, Tony. Open B: Trav, Mel Renton-Wright, Jack Malone, Simon Marrow. Over-60s: Gus Angleton, Nev Foster. Over-50s: Brian Tucker, John Mercer, Andy Brown, Mick Dwyer. Over-40s: Tama Piahana, Russell Synnott, Dave Cassells, Simon Johnson. Logger: Paul Fletcher, Ben Considine, Mitch

OCEAN Grove Surf Life Saving Club will host the first Life Saving Victoria (LSV) carnival of the summer, this Sunday 13 December. The opening surf life saving carnival of season was schedule to take place at Bancoora, but has been relocated to Ocean Grove Main Beach. Ocean Grove club president Steve Peatling said the club was informed of the location switch last month. “It was LSV’s preference for our club to host and contact us to hold it at Ocean Grove, once Bancoora was not going ahead,” Peatling said. “In some ways it is probably good because it gives Ocean Grove a carnival this summer. “We are all looking forward to hosting it now.” Competition is expected to start mid-morning on Sunday.

King joins the Grubbers By MARK HEENAN

NEW Ocean Grove Football Club playing assistant David King feels right at home at the Grubbers. The former St Joseph’s GFL gun midfielder was appointed in the role by Ocean Grove last month. A veteran of more than 200 GFL games at St Joseph’s, King has lived in Ocean Grove for seven years. In 2015, King, 34, won the

GFL reserve grade league bestand-fairest and was named best afield in St Joseph’s GFL reserve grade premiership side. “I reckon it was the right thing to do to freshen myself up a bit, I have been at St Joeys all my life and been driving from Ocean Grove to St Joseph’s for the last seven years,” King told the Voice. “So it was probably time to get to know the community and put the family first a bit closer to home and get to know the

people where I live.” MEANTIME Grubbers players resumed their pre-season training at Shell Road last month. The Grubbers have regularly twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout November. IN other junior football developments, Ocean Grove has appointed Trevor Rayner and Michael Goodger as under-18 coaches for 2016.

After five rounds, the Cobras have a 4-1 record are only behind first-placed Portarlington on the BPCA A Grade ladder. “It was a good win, we had a pretty good draw until now, we knew Barrabool was a going to be a tough game,” Cobra co-coach Corey Walter said. “Barrabool knocked off Anglesea in round four ... to get the win is really pleasing, to go 4-1 is a bonus for us before Christmas.” The Cobras were well led by Matt

Davies (57), while opener Richie Peters (28) and co-coaches Corey Walter (31) and Ben Ricardo (35) made handy contributions with the bat. Late in the innings Collendina A Grade debutant wicket-keeper Max Sutton (27) and Alastair Grant (44) kept the scoreboard ticking over. Walter said the emergence of teenage youngster Sutton, who claimed three catches, was a good sign. “He (Sutton) is a good kid, he is a ripping kid,” Walter said. “He came on the scene this season ... . has been keeping in the juniors. “To have him and Sam Walsh both 15-year-olds playing in the side contributing every weekend is doing a good job is great.” Day one saw experienced Collendina bowling pair Charlie Lamb, who took 6/35 from 30 overs, while Jye Hearps claimed 2/32 from 16 overs, dominated with the ball. This week Collendina faces a chal-

Heads roll Grubbers By MARK HEENAN

BARWON Heads A Grade claimed battle of the bridge honours with a comprehensive 133-run two-day victory over arch rivals Ocean Grove on Saturday 5 December. Ocean Grove Cricket Club coach Paul Jubber said despite two losses in a row, the Grubbers would stick with the club’s enforced youth policy. The Grubbers now have a 3-2 record after five rounds and sit in fifth position on the A Grade ladder. “To be honest it is a bit early for us to know where we are at,” Jubber told the Voice. “We have really tried some young players, we have held back the experienced senior players a little bit to try and unearth these younger players.” In pursuit of Barwon Heads’ first day score of 9/274 from 75 overs, the home side was never in the hunt on day two after being dismissed for 141 in 51.1 overs. At one stage the Grubbers were reeling at 4/17. “Their (Barwon Heads) opening bowlers bowled pretty well, and there is no doubt that our top order were disappointing,” Jubber told the Voice. “We were looking for someone in the top order to bat through the whole day and I guess when are 4/15 your backs against the wall - from that perspective that was really disappointing.” Seagull bowler Lachlan Campbell did the bulk of the damage with 4/42 from 18.1 overs. To to the Grubbers’ credit, the middle and lower Ocean Grove batting order fought the game out, coach Paul Jubber (28) top scored, while Greg Scarpa (23) and Rob Procter (24) all made handy contributions. Barwon Heads’ opening batsman Matt High was the star on day one with a brilliant 123. High, who has scored 151 runs at 37.75 in 2015-'16, shared in a crucial 123-run

fifth wicket partnership with Lewie Hyland (56) on 28 November. Jubber also claimed 4/66 from 16 overs on day one, while Grubber team-mate Corey Buxton took 3/35 from 16 overs. The Grubbers next face Jan Juc, who scored an outright win over Wallington in round five, at home this Saturday 12 December in a two-day match. IN B Grade, Ocean Grove scored a timely 86-run twoday victory over Newcomb at Shell Road Recreation Reserve. Batting first the Grubbers compiled 9/230 from 75 overs on day one. Young Grubber Tom Beasley put his A Grade counterparts on notice after top scoring with 69 and combined in a 75-run fifth wicket partnership stand with Stephen Long (60). In reply, Grubber bowler Luke Hardiman led the way with 4/26 from 11 overs on day two. Newcomb all bowled out for 144 from 42.2 overs. Grubber Toby Featherby claimed four catches. The Grubbers now have a 2-3 record after five rounds. AN unbeaten century from Grubber veteran Craig D’Arcy helped guided Ocean Grove C Grade to a whopping 177-run win over Queenscliff at Point Lonsdale Recreation Reserve. D’Arcy remained not out on 101 and hit seven boundaries in the Grubbers’ total of 8/278 from 60 overs. In reply on day two Queenscliff were all bowled out for 101 from 44 overs. Ocean Grove bowler Steve Cramer led the way with 4/26 from nine overs. IN D Grade Ocean Grove defeated St Leonards 2 by 63 runs in their one-day match at Erwin Reserve in Newcomb. Batting first the Grubbers posted 6/240 from 40 overs, while in reply St Leonards 2 made 5/177 from 40 overs. Grubber Thomas Kent who made 70 with bat, also took 1/21 from eight overs with ball.
