Their advice is simple: More in store for to get the big picture IF you’re considering buying a new big screen TV, do yourself a favour and visit Big Picture People Fountain Gate and take a look at an affordable alternative that will be the envy of all your friends and family. Just like TVs, the picture quality of projectors has dramatically improved over the last few years. Screen sizes from 90” up to 160” are now easily achievable from most projectors, depending on your room size and seating distance. The firm is excited to have the new Dolby Atmos® surround sound system on display in its largest theatre room. With 11 speakers and two subwoofers, the sound fully complements the 140” 4K Sony projector on display. Big Picture People Fountain Gate offers a variety of products including a carefully selected range of home theatre, multi-room audio/ video systems, intercom, security, CCTV and fully automated touch screen controlled AV and lighting systems. They also offer additional products to add those finishing touches that can really set it apart from other systems, including motorised theatre chairs with cup coolers, LED
cyclists
strip lighting, acoustic panels and fibre optic star ceilings to really create something special. So, for customers in the market for an entry level surround sound system or a dedicated theatre room, see what
fantastic products are on offer at Big Picture Fountain Gate that your average bulk store can not cater for. The team of highly trained and dedicated designers and installers
is available to put a system in the home today. Big Picture People, Westfield Fountain Gate, Shop 4 Overland Drive, phone 9704 6044.
THE Bicycle Superstore at Fountain Gate is now easier to find thanks to a store make-over and (coming soon) new signage on the shopfront. Store manager Michael Evans said the shop was a one-stop place for all bicycle needs from servicing and maintenance, bike fitting and demonstrations. “Our range of stock provides customers with more than one option for almost anything they are looking for,” Michael said. “We set our standard of customer service much higher than our competitors and our friendly knowledgeable staff will be able to provide you with anything you’re after. “Currently we have a range of Radius kids bikes on sale as well as a few older models of our road and mountain bikes. “Our focus is to be the go-to store for all your bicycle needs and to have a level of service that is difficult to beat. “Our staff range from young, passionate riders who know more than most about the industry to older (but still young) weekend warriors who are always happy to pass on their knowledge and experience.” Find them at shop S1004 Westfield Fountain Gate Shopping Centre, Overland Drive, Fountain Gate or phone 8790 5500. Kinder lockout By GEORGIA WESTGARTH “MY SON wasn’t even born when other Casey families were filling out the council’s kindergarten enrolment form - so due to their first in, best dressed system I had basically no chance of getting my first preference.” Set on sending her son Alexander to their local preschool in Pearcedale, first-time kinder mum Kylie Matz was shocked at the Casey Council’s kindergarten enrolment process, labelling it illogical and unfair. And she has called for residential zoning restrictions be placed on the growing area’s kindergartens. ‘Sorry, your baby was born too late’ is shocking and it needs to be looked at, locals should have access to their local kinder,” she said. Under the council’s current structure families have to submit an enrolment form ‘any time after the birth of their child’ with their top three kindergarten preferences within the City of Casey. The cut-off date for 2016 enrolments was from 1 May 2011 to 30 April 2012, but for Ms Matz who gave birth to Alexander in February 2012 it meant an unfair disadvantage. Nine months’ worth of enrolments had already taken place before Ms Matz had given birth. Virginia Lloyd from the City of Casey advised that the Pearcedale PreSchool Centre had 118 children on the waiting list for the 2016 year with only 45 places available - which meant 73 families missed out. A Pearcedale resident of eight years, Ms Matz and her husband Andrew were devastated to hear their local kindergarten, three minutes down the road from their home, was unattainable. And it was one phone call that put them on the right track.
Kylie Matz and her son Alexander missed out on their local preschool through no fault of their own - and mum Kylie is calling for residential zoning restrictions to be put on kindergartens in Casey. 148103 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “I called the Casey Council because we hadn’t heard anything six months out from starting at a kinder and the lady gave me an inkling that the likelihood of getting in at Pearcedale PreSchool Centre was slim. “So I started looking, but if she hadn’t given me that inkling I would have been waiting for their letter, which wouldn’t have given me much time to search for another kinder if I
didn’t like the second option,” Ms Matz said. Now driving 22 minutes down the road to a more expensive private kindergarten, after turning down her second preference in the City of Casey, Ms Matz said people living within certain vicinities should get priority over those living further rout. “Anyone living in Casey can apply for a kindergarten in Pearcedale which
means locals who may have been hoping on walking down the road to kinder miss out,” she said. “It’s a no-brainer that locals should have access to their local kinder, it’s a financial burden for some families who may not be able to afford another kinder further away. “And I’d like to see council do something about it because Pearcedale is tiny - it shocked me when I couldn’t
get a place.” Ms Matz has spoken to her local councillor, Geoff Ablett, and is writing to the City of Casey. Cr Ablett has assured her he will take directions from residents. “Pearcedale desperately needs another kindergarten,” he said. “It has grown exponentially and it needs to accommodate the numbers.”

Need for a home By LACHLAN MOORHEAD HOMELESS people are sleeping in the car park at the Cranbourne Salvation Army on a weekly basis. Major Robert Evans said the Cranbourne Salvos were spending about $2000 a year on tents and sleeping bags for people, while volunteers often arrived in the morning to find others sleeping in their cars in the New Holland Drive car park. And the dearth of public housing is not specific to Cranbourne, with Berwick RSL president Ray Heathcote saying he had found a greater demand this year for social housing and accommodation assistance than previously. Echoing these sentiments, Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon raised the issue at this week’s council meeting with a recommendation being put forward to keep pushing the State and Federal governments for more social housing. The report urged the council to “consider the gap in supply of social and affordable housing” in Casey. Major Evans said there was next to no available emergency and commercial accommodation in Cranbourne. “There’s no caravan parks in Cranbourne and only two motels which are way too expensive for people,” he said. “Combine all that with a lack of low-cost housing and a lack of emergency and transitional housing ... it creates a massive gap.” Cr Stapledon said there was “ab-
NAVY blue is taking over the streets of Casey this Christmas and since September Cranbourne Highway Patrol has caught 37 drink and drug drivers. Three people were killed in separate road incidents in the Casey, Cardinia and Dandenong policing division from December last year to January this year. But this holiday season police will be saturating the area with back-up from the TAC. “That’s three people who didn’t get to see this year. That’s three people too many,” Acting Senior Sergeant Pat McGavigan from the Cranbourne police said. “No lives were lost over the Christmas period in Casey, specifically in 2014, but over the past five years Casey has become number one in the state for high trauma. “And that’s why the State Highway Patrol team will be situated in Casey for some time over that period.
Berwick RSL president Ray Heathcote. solutely nothing available” when it came to social housing in Casey. “It’s the one thing that keeps me awake at night.” When it comes to potential solutions to the issue, Major Evans admitted there was no easy answer. “It’s a complicated issue, there’s not one solution in one area, but we
need something that’s a better option then handing out a tent in the middle of winter. “At the moment I’m having conversation with key community leaders within council and the church. “It’s one thing to put our hand out to the government but we have to be more pro-active - how can we use the resources we do have.”
“We have funding through the TAC for additional patrols, that’s how much of a risk Casey is.” Operation Roadwise will continue until 3 January. The targeted approach on Casey drivers will see 17 State Highway Patrol units situated at high risk areas around Casey on different days throughout the holiday months. “There will also be six booze buses in Casey over a 20-day period. “Normally we have a very limited number of booze buses but we are getting so many because Casey is such a high risk area,” Sen Sgt McGavigan said. As part of the operations, numerous registration recognition cars, which automatically tell police vital information, will be in place. Sen Sgt McGavigan said these cars are not to be confused with the Blue Net that Cranbourne has running daily. “We’d be happy not to catch anyone if people do the right thing,” he said.
POLICE are investigating after two BMWs were stolen from inside a Cranbourne mechanic’s shop over the weekend, with the thieves also stealing the garage’s CCTV hard drive to cover their tracks. A silver 2006 BMW X5 and a blue 2006 BMW Coupe were stolen from Auto Care on the South Gippsland Highway sometime between 6.30pm on Friday 4 December and 9.30am on Saturday 5 December. The thieves broke into the store through the glass front door, took the car keys hanging from a hook and stole the two cars which were in the process of being repaired. They also stole a CCTV hard drive before fleeing the garage. It’s understood another two cars were in the garage at the time, but they weren’t stolen.

Cranbourne police have conducted more than 10,000 preliminary breath tests and caught eight drug drivers and 29 drink drivers in the City of Casey since September as part of Operation Octopus. KNOWN around these parts as Cranbourne’s loveable answer to Gina Rinehart, Judy Clarkson has helped build Cranbourne and can now put Clyde on her list of achievements. Ms Clarkson, along with her business partner and daughter Jodie Mitchell, officially opened Shopping on Clyde on Friday 4 November. Ms Clarkson was thrilled to see the centre car park full on its first day of trading and said that she looks forward to seeing the entire 100 acres on Berwick-Cranbourne Road fully developed. “We did it for Cranbourne and Cyde,” she said. “I want to upgrade the whole area and I’m really proud of it - it was very badly needed in Clyde. “The areas need more facilities with all the homes getting built.” Smiles lit up the mother daughter teams faces as they cut the ribbon amid a flurry of live music, trumpeters and champagne was passed around the large crowd. And with stage one of the Clyde developments complete Ms Clarkson said she has big plans for the rest of the vacant land. “We’ve already got Blue Hills Retirement Village on this land and we want to put a golf course behind the shopping centre as well as a tavern and medical centre,” she said. Shopping on Clyde still has some empty shop fronts but Ms Clarkson said residents can expect a fish and chip shop, butcher and apparel stores. “There’s 21 variety shops, plus Coles, Mc-

CASEY council has been slammed as “hypocrites” after recent statistics revealed that more than a third of its decisions are made in secrecy. Data released on the new Know Your Council website found that the City of Casey makes more decisions in council chamber meetings that are closed to the public than any other municipality in the south-east region. The website uncovered that the state-wide average number of council decisions made at closed meetings, known as ‘in-camera’, was 12.20 per cent in the 2014-2015 year. However the City of Casey made 37 per cent of its decisions behind closed doors, which is a stark contrast to neighbouring Cardinia shire which made just one decision in a closed meeting during the period. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA) President Rex Flannery said the high number “isn’t surprising”. “They want to go out into the community by conducting door-to-door market research by hiring a company to seem more transparent but then they are shutting us out in closed meetings,” Mr Flannery said. “They’re doing it because they want to make the rates go up by 1 per cent each year because they want their capital works projects to go ahead. “They are trying to open our doors at home and closing theirs - 37 per cent is not transparent, transparency is when you have nothing to hide,” he said. During the same period neighbouring Cardinia shire made only one in-camera decision making it the most transparent council in the region. That figure has baffled the secrecy-inclined Casey Mayor Sam Aziz. “To say they’ve only made one decision in 12 months boggles me,” he said. “There must be a clerical error somewhere. “I can’t speak for them but I find it difficult to understand how that can be.” Standing by his council’s high number of closed meeting decisions, Cr Aziz said he was doing his municipality a service by making so many in private. “They are made that way in the best interest of rate payers,” he said. “You’ve got to remember, Casey is a huge infrastructure city and our current financial spending on infrastructure sits at 90 million, so there’s a lot of contractual building activity in this municipality.

“Tendering decisions are best made in closed council to get the best value for money, otherwise information can be leaked into the market and give bidders an advantage.” Cr Aziz said it was not appropriate to discuss certain matters such as suicide prevention and various sensitive subjects in public. “In all seven years on council, I think the number of topics discussed at closed meetings has remained at around the same level,” he said. “At the last council meeting about eight matters were brought up in closed council and all related to contractual matters.” He said topics discussed in closed meetings included the consideration of personnel matters, personal hardship of a resident, industrial matters, proposed developments, contractual matters, matters affecting the security of council property, legal advice or any other matter deemed to prejudice the council or a person. Know Your Council revealed that Yarra Ranges council makes 15.40 per cent of its decisions behind closed doors, with Baw Baw 15 per cent and the City of Greater Dandenong 2 per cent.

Traffic tests for something in the air FOR the next 12 months VicRoads will be monitoring traffic noise and air quality along the Cranbourne section of the South Gippsland Highway. The tests are currently underway around Melbourne and will be used a part of a VicRoads environmental performance program. Melbourne is the first city in
Australia to take part in such a study which will align the state with international best practice. VicRoads’s Dr Helen Murphy said the long-term trends in pollution and noise emissions will be analysed to assist with the planning and design of future roads and upgrades. “When selecting the most appropriate locations, we also
looked at the availability of traffic data, equipment security and the lack of interference from other noise and pollution sources,” Dr Murphy said. During the monitoring, air quality will be assessed by measuring the amount of nitrogen dioxide in traffic related emissions.

Not money well spent ON SATURDAY 5 December, council held an all-day meeting for between 70 and 80 people, to discuss trying to get one per cent more for rates. At the end of the meeting each person was given an envelope with $120 cash in it. $120 x 70 or 80 people is a lot of money - lunch provided. Instead of trying to bribe people with $120, council could have used the money to

Re: Crime gang arrests A massive hi-5 to the police for catching some of these buggers and slowing the rate down. After two of my cars were stolen in July, three offenders were charged and my vehicles were returned, even after all the robberies they were involved in. It upsets me that these so-called gang members will simply get a slap on the wrist ... and I’ve spoken to many police officers that are frustrated with the system also. THE police certainly know their audience. When speaking to a police spokesperson about a random weapons search held at Dandenong train station last Friday, a Star News reporter was asked to hold off reporting on it for a few hours so as not to give too many people a heads-up. Police had already broadcast about the weapons search on ABC radio - but the spokesperson said that was okay because those likely to be caught in the search wouldn’t be likely to be listening to the ABC.

Driven crazy SEVEN years driving with an expired Jordanian international licence has finally caught up with a woman in her fifties. The woman became trapped in a Dandenong Plaza roundabout after she entered it in the wrong direction. She then reversed at speed about 15 metres into a vehicle behind her, then fled the scene in her car without exchanging details. “There were significant language barriers,” the woman’s lawyer explained to a court. “On what lawful basis did she believe she was entitled to drive the vehicle?” the judge asked the lawyer. He placed the woman on a 12-month good behaviour bond, on condition she wrote an apology letter to the victim and donated $250 to the court’s charitable fund. She was banned from applying for a valid driver’s licence for a month.

Drug offences up By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE number of drug offences committed by men and women in Casey has sharply risen last year, according to data released by the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) last month. The number of drug use and possession incidents in Casey for men rose by 111 and women 48. From July 2014 to June 2015, the number of drug offences for men rose to 507 from 396 a year earlier.
For women, in the same period, the number rose to 130 from 82 the previous year. The rise for men comes as the number fell to 396, in the period July 2013 to June 2014, compared to 411 from July 2012 to June 2013. Detective Senior Sergeant Rod Maroney, from Casey CIU, said the increase this year could partly be attributed to a rise in detection rates. “Our drug crew is having a good run and drawing on lots of good in-
formation, Det Sen Sgt Maroney said. “It’s positive in the fact we’re detecting more offences, getting to the heart of it, and getting to major dealers and the people manufacturing drugs. “But it’s also concerning that there’s more and more use and young people becoming vulnerable to it. Asked about the overrepresentation in the data of men compared to
women, Det Sen Sgt Maroney said the gender disparity was common. “That would be the same across every crime scene we have, he said. “Whether it be burglaries, theft ... males always dominate. “There’s no rhyme or reason, they’re just more at the forefront of it. “And when you look at manufacturing and high level dealing, it’s always dominated by males.
Work on early stages of Monash widening By LACHLAN MOORHEAD TESTING on the Monash Freeway has already started ahead of the road being widened in a $400 million upgrade announced last month. Geotechnical works on the road’s pavement started on Sunday night (6 December) and are scheduled to continue into next year. Surveying is also taking place on and off the shoulder of the road at various locations. Under a proposal from the Andrews Government the freeway will be widened to five lanes running each way between EastLink and the South Gippsland Highway, and three lanes each way further out to Clyde Road. The project is expected to go to tender in mid-2016, with construction slated to begin in 2017, and expected to be finished the following year. But testing on the major road is already underway and is expected to continue until late February, stretching from Dandenong North to Berwick.
Premier Daniel Andrews joined Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley and Roads Minister Luke Donnellan last month to announce plans to widen the Monash Freeway. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said up to Christmas the testing would be focussed between the EastLink interchange and the South Gippsland Freeway. He said traffic flow was not expected to be affected.

“We’re not wasting a day to get this project done. It will cut travel times, improve safety and remove frustrating bottlenecks on the Monash, he said. “This will mean a more reliable trip to 200,000 drivers a day, with
less time stuck in traffic. “If you’re driving late at night on the Monash please observe the roadworks speed limits, watch out for workers and take extra care. In October, it was reported that the Turnbull Government agreed to unlock the $1.5 billion East West Link money allocated to the State Government, provided it would be used on projects like the Monash Freeway. After the upgrade announcement La Trobe MP Jason Wood questioned why construction wouldn’t start until 2017, claiming the Andrews Government could already access the $1.5 billion in Federal funding. “The $1.5 billion is already with the State Labor Government, this is totally unacceptable to start work in 2017, I have been told via sources that work could start early next year, especially the traffic management, he said. “There is $1.5 billion of Federal funding which, in part, will go towards the project, so only State Labor is holding back with funding.

A PLAN for Protective Service Officers (PSO) to be deployed to dozens of metropolitan stations is well behind schedule, with stations including Merinda Park station remaining unmanned for almost a year. A document sent to the State Government from the Office of the Chief Commissioner October last year outlined police recommendations for PSO deployments. The report recommended that PSOs be stationed at Merinda Park station from 6pm until the last train by January this year. Shadow Police Minister Edward O’Donohue, who was made privy to the deployment recommendations for 212 metropolitan stations while in government, said commuters in the outer south-east deserve the same level of safety at patrolled stations. “This service is invaluable in the outer growth areas as people are getting back later at night. “There is strong evidence that PSOs improve commuter safety or perceptions of safety,” he said. Berwick resident and public transport user Tom Jankovic, 42, said he gets the sense that women and vulnerable commuters feel unsafe on his line. “I see the look on their faces,” he said. Mr O’Donohue said the
Protective Service Officers are currently manning other south-eastern train stations including Hallam. 127085 Picture: ROB CAREW railway stations and four regional stations that will receive PSOs by 30 June 2016.” A spokesperson for the Minister for Police Wade Noonan said the deployment plan was on track. “The Andrews Labor Government has funded almost 700 additional police personnel in our first year of government including an extra 109 PSOs and 62 transit police to keep the travelling public safe,” the spokesperson said. PSOs will be stationed overnight at premium stations including Cranbourne under the government’s 24-hour Night Network Trail which is due to kick off next month. Last year, PSO roles were scrutinised following reports that the majority of offences they dealt with related to minor offences such as smoking, littering, swearing and vandalism.
lack of PSOs in the area makes the current issue of low police numbers worse, citing the recent temporary closure of Pakenham police station due to resourcing issues. Gembrook MP Brad Battin added: “We don’t know how many people are willing to use the train and clogging up the Monash Freeway because there are no PSOs at their station.” A Victoria Police spokesperson said the Transit Safety Division is unaware of the PSO deployment schedule. She said PSO deployment schedules are undefined, but will be completed by 30 June next year. “Victoria Police communicates deployments when they are going to happen,” the spokesperson said. “Merinda Park will be among the 212 metropolitan

MP backlash By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS OPPOSITION multicultural affairs spokeswoman Inga Peulich is facing a political backlash from Indian community leaders after suing a fellow Liberal Party member for defamation. Ms Peulich has sent a defamation writ to Cranbournebased Liberal member Phillip Prasad over an article in The Australian in July in which he accused her of threatening him and deriding his Indian background during a post-state election party meeting last December. Soon after the story was published, Mr Prasad challenged Ms Peulich in the Journal to sue him if his claims were untrue. On Thursday 3 December Ms Peulich told Star News that Mr Prasad was given the opportunity to apologise and retract his claims. “This did not occur so, regrettably, I have no other options but to defend myself and the negative impact of this false allegation on my family, especially my 83-year-old mother who, along with her parents and siblings, was interned in a concentration camp. “Racism is abhorrent and (the) allegations are totally untrue. “Without a retraction and apology, I cannot let the allegations stand. Mr Prasad has said he did not want to comment publicly. In October he told Star News: “If it’s not true, she should sue me.

Inga Peulich is sueing a racial abuse complainant for defamation. Mr Prasad is awaiting a Liberal Party investigation into the incident. He said he’d also formally complained to police and the Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission over the incident. In a legal letter sent to Mr Prasad in July, Ms Peulich took offence at Mr Prasad’s quote in the newspaper article that she “carries the poison of racism in her. The letter claimed the story bore the imputation that she was a “hypocrite and liar in her public stance against racism as shadow minister for multicultural affairs. The furore has divided the Indian community, some of whom are threatening a backlash against the Liberal Party and Ms Peulich. Overseas Indian Cultural Congress secretary George Thomas said the issue was raised at a ‘community leaders’ dinner attended by more than 20 diverse community, religious
and business groups in Dandenong on 27 October. He said there was a resolve among the normally staunch Liberal gathering to defend Mr Prasad in any legal action. “We are all standing against the Liberal Party and Inga. “This will have a big impact on the Liberal Party in that corridor of Dandenong, Hampton Park and Cranbourne. This is where the Indian community is so large. “Politically, she will pay a high price. Mr Thomas, who has been involved in Indian associations for 30 years, said the conflict could have been easily solved if Ms Peulich had apologised. Past president of the Federation of Indian Associations Victoria Vasan Srinivasan, however, backed Ms Peulich. “Inga still has good standing in the community. “She’s supported FIAV over the years and is well respected by the FIAV committee members.

A MULTI faith chant meant to unite has left its audience cold after it breached the strict protocols of a Casey council meeting. The multi-faith statement, which is read after a Christian prayer at every City of Casey council meeting, was followed by a chant sung by Casey Multifaith Network member Jamel Kaur on Tuesday 1 November. The chant, which includes messages from numerous religions, raised eyebrows on the night and saw councillor Rosalie Crestani march out of the chamber in disgust. “I left because I didn’t want to have anything to do with it. I was deeply offended,” Cr Crestani said. “I stood outside of the chamber praying in the spirit realms against those last two prayers because I don’t want Islamic and Hindu spirits released into the council chambers.
“She made a mockery of what is allowed and what’s convention.” Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the current set up was one of fairness and that Ms Kaur’s extension of the multi-faith statement was “inappropriate”. “We respect all faith and cultures and the multi faith statement is designed to be one of unity about common values of humanity. “It’s not designed to be a platform for individual faith to get up there and deliver part of their faith,” he said. “I wasn’t offended by what she did but I was disappointed that a protocol had been breached. “I don’t think it was appropriate to extend the statement in the manner that she did.” Councillors Louise Berkelmans, Mick Morland and Rafal Kaplon all echoed the mayor’s sentiment. “I thought it was very inap-
propriate. They are allowed to give the multi-faith statement and nothing else,” Cr Morland said. But Ms Kaur, who has been a Casey Multi-faith member for more than a year, said she was advised to chant. “It was my first time reading the multi-faith statement at council and I asked the officer or councillor who booked me if I should sing the chant and they said yes,” Ms Kaur told Star News. “I was not aware it was against protocol and I’m sorry if I offended anyone.” Cr Aziz said he did not step in at the time because he did not want to escalate the matter. “I could have easily reminded the reader that this was not the protocol, but I don’t think it would have been good leadership because it could have offended her,” he said. He said he has arranged for the relevant governance officers to advise Ms Kaur of the correct procedures for next time.
Stuck consumers squeal over pork shortage By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE pork shortage has hit Cranbourne as Victorian pork suppliers fail to keep up with demand after about 9000 pigs were lost to a recent bush fire that devastated a South Australian piggery. Luke Nagel, the manager of Cranbourne's Kelly's Meats for the past eight years, said concerns of a pork shortage always heat up around Christmas time but this year "everyone's screaming". "It's been a horror year with meat prices rising, beef doubling in the past six months due to tariffs and no one expected this big pork shortage to top off the year," Mr Nagel said. "The bushfire killed a lot of pigs at a major breeder that supplies Victoria with pork and we are definitely feeling it. "We placed an order for 10 1202687-PB45-15

Mr Nagel said he could tell times were tough when butchers in the "pork mecca" of Springvale were turning away customers. "We've heard even Springvale butchers, who are renowned for their pork supply, can't get enough pigs and a lot of restaurants go there directly," he said.

Mr Nagel said Cranbourne residents will have to pre-order to ensure they get some pork on their fork at a reasonable price over the festive season. "We've started producing hams about four weeks ago in bulk, but now with the pork shortage we can't guarantee hams if you don't order. "There won't be big butcher windows on display with legs of ham this year because we haven't got the stock."

BUYERS MOVE QUICKLY TO THE RIDGE CONSTRUCTION is underway at Peet’s new Acacia community in the sought-after suburb of Botanic Ridge, paving the way for buyers to start building their new homes in mid-2016. Peet managing director and CEO Brendan Gore said the response from homebuyers to the new community has been incredibly positive. “The masterplan for Acacia takes full advantage of its natural setting and that is certainly proving to be a drawcard for buyers looking to live close to nature while still being close to important amenities and key transport links,” Mr Gore said. “This presents a unique opportunity for a range of homebuyers, including those looking to upgrade their home - and lifestyle.” And buyers have been quick to act, with stage one selling out and the release of stage two brought forward to meet demand. More than 60 home sites have now sold at Acacia since land sales began in July. Brett and Michelle Simmonds are delighted with their purchase at Acacia. “We knew we were on a good thing when we bought,” said 28-year-old Michelle Simmonds. “Acacia was selling like hot cakes. It’s got ‘family’ written all over it. “We live nearby and there are lots of new estates around the area but Acacia has a lot of things the others were lacking,” Michelle said. Brett and Michelle have secured one of the keenly contested corner blocks
overlooking the wetlands they had their hearts set on. “We loved the block, we loved the wetlands and there’s so much going on in the estate. “There’s the future school, parks and facilities, a shopping centre, there’s even a community centre planned,” she said. “For us with a young family, they’re all massive ticks in the box.” Michelle said the family will grow and 10-month-old Byron will have brothers or sisters to explore the wetlands with and kick a football or throw a frisbee in the park. “We’ll go for walks, feed the animals and play in the parks,” Michelle said. “We’ll be living in an estate but also surrounded by nature.” The Simmonds are planning to build their new two-storey home around a balcony with a focus on Acacia’s wetlands. “Quite literally, the balcony will be the
main feature of the house,” Michelle said. ”It will be an unusual house in that we want the living areas upstairs connecting onto a big balcony so we can do our living and entertaining overlooking the wetlands.” The Simmonds recently took their son Byron to visit Acacia and were amazed at how quickly the site works were progressing. The family is looking forward to living in Botanic Ridge, a suburb with a good name and postcode as well as easy access to Casey Fields and the amenities of Cranbourne. Acacia is just three kilometres from the Cranbourne town centre in one of Melbourne’s most sought-after locations. More than 600 households at Acacia will come to enjoy beautifully landscaped parks, designed wetlands and wide treelined streets that blend the community with the very best elements of the neighbouring Royal Botanic Gardens. In time, residents will also benefit from
a range of planned amenities, including a future shopping village, primary school and community centre, while the beach, Mornington Peninsula and three golf courses are just a short drive away. The new community is close to excellent transport links, with the South Gippsland Highway connecting residents to major roads and the Cranbourne Train Station just seven minutes’ drive away, offering convenient access to the Melbourne CBD. There is currently a range of home sites available with lots ranging from 336 square metres to a generous 595sqm, starting at $186,000. To find out how to make Acacia home, visit acaciabotanic.com.au, contact sales representative Georgie Smith on 0437 373 753 or drop by the Acacia Sales and Information Centre at 53 Craig Road, Botanic Ridge, on Mondays and public holidays from 1pm to 5pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 5pm. 1210095

Shu-Cheen Yu warmed up her vocal chords after a chat on Casey Radio this morning.
When we sell more oranges in China, we employ more locals in Mildura. Tania Chapman Owner, Colignan Producers.
By GEORGIA WESTGARTH FRESH from performing in The King and I, Berwick’s multi-award winning opera singer ShuCheen Yu will grace this year’s Cranbourne Community Christmas Carols. A Casey resident of 15 years, Shu-Cheen said she was humbled to perform for her local community. “I love singing carols and I was booked for another concert at the same time as the Cranbourne performance so I am making sure I can sing at both,” she said. Chatting on Casey Radio’s ‘The Women of Today’, Shu-Cheen revealed her life was set out for her before she was born. “My mother is a Chinese opera singer and when she was pregnant with me she still performed - at seven months she was on stage singing opera,” Shu-Cheen said, laughing. “I was destined to be a singer and actress.” But Shu-Cheen’s true passion lies elsewhere. “A lot of my family members work in medicine and I am very interested in it myself, Chinese medicine is my love,” she said. The Casey celebrity recently finished a real estate course to work alongside husband Kelvin Gough in their business ‘Safe Super Homes’ and said she was excited to watch her home town grow. “Casey is the best place to live, we have everything and it is affordable,” she said. Shu-Cheen will be performing some of her favourite Christmas carols on Sunday 13 December at the St John’s Anglican Church in Cranbourne. For more information on the community carols call 5996 3251.
Trade is Australia’s shop front to the world. Just ask Tania Chapman. Tania is a citrus grower from Mildura, Victoria. Thanks to the Free Trade Export Agreements with North Asia, she’s receiving more orders from Japan, China and South Korea.
more fruit is being harvested and more jobs are being created, safeguarded to protect local workers. When we open up markets, it opens up new opportunities. And that’s everyone’s business.
This means more citrus trees are being planted,

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Recycle your skills By CASEY NEILL THE future is all about flexibility, businesses at the SEBN Christmas Industry Breakfast have been told. “I want you to think of yourselves as a recyclable bottle,” global business futurist Morris Miselowski said at Sandown Racecourse in Springvale on Thursday 3 December. The morning’s 190 guests donated cash to buy Christmas gifts for those less fortunate, to be distributed through agencies including Dandenong Community Aid and Advice Bureau. The generosity continued when Simone Hackett from State Schools Relief Fund (SSRF) spoke about how money from the Take a Swing for Charity golf day had supported struggling students. Golfers raised more than $44,000 at the SEBN event in February, which helped SSRF to dress 679 students at 17 schools within Greater Dandenong in $95,977 worth of clothing this year. SSRF will also be the recipient of next year’s golf day proceeds, which are scheduled for Monday 22 February at Sandhurst Golf Club. Mr Miselowski told breakfast guests that some of today’s most successful companies had no assets - driver service Uber owns no cars, accommodation
Martin Miselowski speaks to SEBN breakfast guests. 148002 service Airbnb owns no hotels. He expects this trend towards “using rather than owning” to continue. Tomorrow’s jobs will include tasks not yet imagined. Mr Miselowski said everyone would be employing a transhumanist designer within 10 years - a human resources role assigning tasks to humans and robots. Other roles of the future will include vertical farming and genome specialists, 3D prosthetic engineers and machine linguists.
Accountants and auditors, retail sales assistants and library technicians are among those on the way out, Mr Miselowski said. He said employing many people in one space from 9am to 5pm weekdays would become anachronistic, and businesses would instead have a small team they could add to when necessary. Wearable devices will continue to increase in popularity, he said, to the point where in 10 years everybody would be wearing nine devices at any given time.
“The world is increasingly based on data,” he said. Mr Miselowski said more inanimate objects would be hooked up to interact with and understand humans. Homes will recognise that their owners are about to arrive and open the garage door, turn on lights and more. “And next year will be a huge growth year for drones across the planet,” Mr Miselowski said. But don’t worry: “This is not robots taking over the world.” “There will still be humans at every touch point. “At the core we are still humans. We still have need for all the products and services in this room.” He said today’s tsunami of new technology would calm down in 10 to 20 years. “We’re seeing so much that is so different,” he said. Autonomous cars could be a matter of years from dominating roads, dramatically reducing - if not eliminating - road deaths. Mr Miselowski said they’d also remove the need for driver’s licences and so improve transport accessibility for the disabled, elderly and young. The more efficient mechanised driving would also be better for environment, he said, and less stressful for commuters.
Cash for easing cast-off of cars By Casey Neill AN $8.4 million boost to skills, training and job search support in the south-east is part of a $46.5 million State Government auto industry transition package. Premier Daniel Andrews and Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio launched the Towards Future Industries: Victoria’s Automotive Transition Plan on Monday 7 December. The plan followed announcements from Ford, Holden and Toyota last year that they would stop manufacturing in Australia by 2017. Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert joined Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams at Chisholm’s Dandenong campus to outline the South East Automotive Industry Transition Package (SEAT). “With the decline in automotive manufacturing in the south-east, it is crucial we support TAFEs and other training organisations to retain workers so they don’t become a statistic,” he said. SEAT will include $4 million for a joint project between Chisholm and Holmesglen Institutes to up-skill and re-skill retrenched automotive supply chain workers, engage workers with industry, support busi-
nesses to restructure into new opportunities and to help retrenched workers find jobs. There’ll be $2 million to establish two Skills and Jobs Centres to allow Chisholm and Holmesglen to work directly with employers to help prospective students find jobs or move into further training. The remaining $2 million will fund Group Training Organisations (GTOs) to employ about 250 retrenched mature aged automotive supply chain workers as apprentices and trainees. GTOs will receive $10,000 per apprentice they take on and $6000 per trainee aged over 40. Towards Future Industries: Victoria’s Automotive Transition Plan also included a $5 million Automotive Supply Chain Transition program to help businesses identify and capture new opportunities in other markets; a $33 million Local Industry Fund for Transition to support communities hit hard by the departure of Ford, Holden and Toyota; incentive payments up to $7000 for businesses employing retrenched automotive workers; and up to an additional $4000 for employees who provide workers hired under the scheme with accredited training.

Hard road to change life By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A SERIAL family violence offender has asked a court for another chance after damaging property during tirades at an employment agency and at a close relative’s home. Corey May, 22, of Cranbourne West, had arrived at 12pm on 8 October, three hours late for an appointment at the Cranbourne agency. Upon being told he couldn’t be booked in for another appointment, May became agitated and verbally abusive. He damaged a chair beyond repair when he threw it several metres, in the vicinity of a manager. May made full admissions and apologised to the agency after the incident, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told on 7 December. In a separate incident on 11 November, an enraged May damaged a close relative’s back door handle, and punched a hole in the wooden front door of a Cranbourne West home. May then phoned his expartner, telling her she’d “won”. He stepped in front of a slowmoving bus, but was knocked

over without injury. The accused later told police he’d prefer to punch objects rather than the relative - who has since been protected by an intervention order. May had spent a “distressing” past 25 days in remand custody but had prospered from having “time to consider the impact of his behaviour”, his lawyer Emma Drummond told the court. The accused was also keen to undergo a men's behaviour change program and grief counselling over the death of a close family member two years ago. “His offending does date from around the time of (the relative’s) death,” Ms Drummond said. “He hasn’t had counselling in relation to that.” May is set to appear at a County Court appeal in February against a jail sentence for domestic violence. The accused had been convicted over assaulting and threatening to kill his ex-partner. He told Dandenong Magistrate’s Court he “wanted to do better for myself”.
“I really want to make the change this time and do the right thing.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted May had breached two community corrections orders for family violence since 2013 and that the trigger was a close relative’s death. He said May’s problematic drug taking was partly fuelled by vulnerability. “I get the impression you’re not that tough. When you were first brought into custody, you were devastated.” He also factored in May’s youthfulness and family support, and that he was now willing to take responsibility for his actions. “You want to change, to engage and deal with your grief issues ... I’m going to give you that opportunity.” May was convicted and put on a 12-month community corrections order with judicial monitoring and drug and mental health treatment. His 25 days in remand was counted as time served. As May was led out through the police cells, he said to Mr Vandersteen: “Merry Christmas by the way.”
Casey has a lot to complain about By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CASEY residents have a lot to argue about - more than most of the state. Statistics recently released from the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria (DSCV) have revealed the City of Casey made the second highest number of calls for help in Victoria over the past year. Close to 900 calls to assist Casey residents in settling disputes were made to the DSCV in 2014/15, which is more than 78 other local government areas in Victoria. Greater Geelong City topped the list with 914 angry callers but Casey wasn’t far behind with 898 calls made. Neighbouring Cardinia Shire was much further down the list making just a quarter of Casey’s number at 230 calls for help. However just 50 Casey calls were referred for further advice and mediation with 303 Geelong residents taking their matters further. The free and confidential dispute resolution service deals with disagreements over fences, trees, animals, noise, drainage, difficult or anti-social behaviour, workplace issues, committees, clubs or incorporated associations, and matters referred to mediation by a magistrate. And the high number of rows in Casey has prompted the DSCV to release a message urging residents to “keep cool” this summer.
DSCV director Gina Ralston said the festive season was often a busy period for the service with issues stemming from parties and family gatherings. “People often make the most of the warmer weather to use outside spaces to celebrate the festive season with family and friends. This can result in greater contact with neighbours, families and friends,” Ms Ralston said. “These are usually celebratory social occasions but can sometimes exacerbate existing tensions with neighbours around issues such as noise, behaviour and fencing disputes,” she said. Nearly 20,000 people seek help each year from DSCV to resolve disputes early. Of those, more than 7000 calls in 2014/15 were for fencing disputes, 5566 for behav-
ioural issues and 536 for noiserelated matters. Ms Ralston said many disputes could be resolved through communication and negotiation, which saved time, money and stress for individuals and families. “Doing something as simple and courteous as leaving a note in a neighbour’s letter box to let them know that you’re planning to host a gathering can avoid disagreements down the track,” she said. “We always encourage people to try and resolve their disputes among themselves where possible. But if that can’t be achieved, DSCV can assist and provide an alternative to court action,” Ms Ralston said. Anyone seeking to resolve a dispute can find further information on the DSCV website www.disputes.vic.gov.au
Fresh recruits firing up By GEORGIA WESTGARTH
Inspector Paul Breen in discussions with local leaders earlier this year.
Police in the playground for new recruits By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CASEY schools may get a visit from uniform police next year to encourage students to back law enforcers. Five meetings attended by former drug addicts, youth workers, police officers and Casey councillors were held at each council ward for the first time this year in a bid to teach residents what they can do to assist police. Casey Inspector Paul Breen spoke at every meeting with one message - “we’re in it together”.
“We wanted people who attended the forum to leave with the understanding that Casey’s high crime rate is not just a police problem but their problem as well,” Insp Breen said. Touching on drug addictions, theft from cars and crime gangs at each forum, Insp Breen said he was disappointed at the low numbers of attendees but believes people who did attend left the forums more informed. “We had about 30 to 50 residents on average at each forum and I think people
didn’t have a realistic understanding of the strong hold of drug addiction. “But they left with a realisation that people can’t just stop being addicted,” he said. Councillor Amanda Stapledon said she’s been inundated with responses from attendees since the last ward forum on Wednesday 25 November. “After the presentation there was further discussion and since then I have received numerous emails from community leaders and school principals asking
what they can do to help,” Cr Stapledon said. Schools have been selected as the next point of call since the forums and Insp Breen said: “Targeting youth is so important because they are our future. “Above all else it’s our continual drive to prevent crime - Police in Schools is no longer running like it used to, police now attend schools when required. “Next year we hope to put a strategy in place to do forums in schools as a targeted approach over a period of time,” he said.
THE Cranbourne Fire Brigade will welcome two freshly trained recruits ahead of this year’s fire season. Twenty-nine men and women graduated from the 19-week training course at the Victorian Emergency Management Training College at Craigieburn on Sunday 6 December. Cranbourne is among 11 other rapidly growing stations in outer Melbourne to receive the recent graduates. The firefighters will start placement at their nominated stations next week and CFA chief officer Joe Buffone said this would allow them to hit the ground running. “From next week onwards, they will be combining plenty of on-the-job training with the regular firefighting duties,” he said. “During the last 19 weeks, these recruits have tackled everything from school education to driver training and dealing with hazardous materials incidents.” Over the past five years, the CFA has added an extra 407 career firefighters and officers to its network of stations primarily located in high-growth areas. The CFA will be recruiting for new firefighters from March next year, for more information visit cfa.vic.gov.au.

New Lightning boss By JARROD POTTER Lightning BUILDING culture from the ground up enticed Paddy Cooke to sign on with Lyndhurst FNC. The newest Southern FNL senior club, launched by South East Juniors’ club Lyndhurst JFC, will have a first-time senior coach at the helm with Cooke, who is keen to develop the Lightning standard. With a clean slate and keen committee ready to launch the senior side, Cooke wants the club to start on the right note and set itself up properly. “Basically, that it was a start-up club, there’s no baggage with it - everything that happens is completely on our own backs, so whatever we do is our development,” Cooke said. “Culture is where it has to start - we have to build something that people want to be around - and success will follow that. “You can’t just go out and chase players; you’ve got to build an environment that’s sustainable.” Cooke, a former Skye premiership player and member of their Team of the Decade, hasn’t decided whether he’ll don the orange and blue, as it’s something Cooke would hope he doesn’t have to do.
“I retired two years ago but that said, with a startup club and if they need the leadership - following structures with the voice on field - then I will, but ideally no,” Cooke said. “My best footy is well and truly behind me and I have to get back into playing shape, but injuries killed me towards the end and I couldn’t keep up with it.” He’ll leave the playing duties to the new look squad which will hopefully in time fill up with Lyndhurst’s juniors. “We want to bridge the gap so it’s a natural progression where the juniors can step straight up,” Cooke said. “We’ve got under-17s for next year, but they’re bottom -age, and if any of those players are good enough they’ll step straight in. “We’ll be working with them thoroughly, so they can step straight up with us and we’ll have them training with us as often as possible.” Lyndhurst will play its first SFNL clash against Hallam in a cross-town showdown on 9 April at Marriott Waters Reserve. The club has been training since last month but is still on the hunt for recruits - if anyone is interested they can contact Lyndhurst via www.lnfc. com.au.

Coaching role for Matilda star By JARROD POTTER CALLING in the big guns to coach the next generation of female soccer talent, former Matilda Debbie Nichols will be part of the inaugural coaching set-up at Southern United. In a coup for the Under 13 program, Nichols, from Beaconsfield, is set to coach the smallest Southerners in the inaugural Women’s National Premier League (WNPL) competition. Nichols brings a great wealth of playing and coaching experience to the side - having featured for Australia 12 times including at the World Cup and an upset-defeat of Brazil in 1983 - and she’s excited to see the south east super-club earn its place in the league. “It’s a bit of a shock to the system, but the numbers have been good,” Nichols said. “Really pleased and it’s good that Southern got up in the consortium bid as this is a growth area of Melbourne and you’d want to make sure it’s represented.” Having played in Australia since she was 12 - going through senior
Former Matilda Debbie Nichols has joined Southern United as a junior Picture: JARROD POTTER WNPL coach. 146864 sides at Springvale, Dandenong North, Dandenong, Berwick City and the Casey Comets - Nichols thinks the junior girls pathway will allow kids to slowly develop and hone their
skills rather than fending for themselves against the adults. “It’s absolutely exploded - the fact that at this age, me and Theresa (Deas) had to play in senior teams as
there was no junior set up,” Nichols said. “It makes it easier for those who maybe aren’t as talented now - who wouldn’t survive playing open age. “It gives them an opportunity to develop between 12 and 17 ... and gives them a pathway and a great opportunity to grow.” While she’s used to coaching the seniors - having stood at the helm of the Casey Comets for 15 years - Nichols thought it was nice to step back to juniors and help cultivate the south east’s finest. “I’ve been coaching senior women for 15 years at least and I’ve had some absolute superstar 13 and 14-year-olds through that period,” Nichols said. “I’ve done all age groups before but never a group this young so it’s going to be different.” “It will be fun - takes a bit of pressure off not doing the seniors - but we’ll see how we go.” Southern United president Theresa Deas - another south east soccer champion from the Dandenong area thought Nichols’ appointment was a boon for the juniors as the club looks towards its inaugural 2016.
DIVISIONAL football has come earlier than expected to the South East Football Netball League with the SEFNL board deciding to run two Under 19 tiers in 2016. The decision will see the demise of the Under 18s competition and mean - for the first time since the now SEFNL clubs formed to become the Casey Cardinia Football League in 2005 - that there will be no Under 17s or 18s football at senior clubs next season. Under 17 football will become the sole domain of the South East Juniors with players then transitioning to Under 19s at senior clubs. SEFNL expects some of its member clubs to field teams in both divisions, some will just field one, with the remainder of division two to be made up of new clubs entering the league. The SEFNL board’s decision is the direct result of a 2014 AFL South East Youth Football Review that concentrated on the transition from junior to senior football for 16-20 year olds. One of the worrying statistics that triggered the review was that a staggering 82 per cent of the 2014 Under 17s competition, or 252 of 310 players, were not eligible to remain in 2015. It forced SEFNL’s hand to revert to both Under 18 and Under 19 competitions this year. SEFNL Operations Manager and board member Liz Triffitt said the new structure was crucial to the growth and sustainability of existing clubs and important in trying to attract new clubs into the competition. “Obviously growth is an important part of our strategic plan and this does provide the opportunity for new clubs to come across,” Triffitt said. “An entry level in division two is a lot less daunting and provides a staggered progression for potential new clubs.” Some of those potential new clubs, not officially aligned to senior SEFNL clubs at the moment, include SEJ affiliates Narre North Foxes, Narre South Lions, Endeavour Hills, Fountain Gate and Berwick Springs. Those clubs now have a vehicle to launch their own Under 19s, and build administration structures that could see them become part of senior divisional football in the future. The SEFNL board has recognised that in moving forward with its desire to establish senior divisional football, it needed to create opportunities for new clubs to join SEFNL. Any club wishing to join SEFNL can call Liz Triffitt on 5995 5060.

Casey win is a carbon-copy By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 10 and 11 (Twenty20) South-Melbourne’s CASEY (7/164) second triumph in as many weeks was in many ways a carbon-copy of its first. With his side struggling at 3/9 against bottom ranked Greenvale Kangaroos (108), the batting burden fell to captain Lachlan Sperling (86) - who stood up and posted his best Premier innings so far. Belting Greenvale around Casey Fields - Sperling sent a few sixes into the trees, showing the best of his batting at the right time - standing alongside Michael Wallace (41) in a match-defining 111-run partnership. Wallace was hitting them just as cleanly as the captain putting three sixes and a couple of cracking fours into the ledger before falling to Ramneet Dhindsa (2/31). The captain kept the pace up as a century loomed, but Sperling unselfishly played the team game and went the late wallop to his personal detriment - falling to Aaron Smillie (4/23). Their good work set the stage for the Swans’ bowlers. Outside of Adam Amin (62no) the rest of the Kangaroos’ order hopped from the crease quickly. James Seymour (3/18) and Brendan Rose (2/23) proved the instigators of the visitors’ demise with a 56-run victory secured with an over in hand. Saturday wasn’t as pleasing for Casey (117) as Fitzroy-Doncaster (5/171) was too mighty in the end. Casey hosts Melbourne Uni in the final two-dayer of 2015.
Dandenong opener Brett Forsyth had a reprieve after skying this slog against Geelong. 148087 Picture: JARROD POTTER Meagre rations proved enough for Dandenong (8/92) to get by against Geelong (5/87) on Saturday. After Tom Donnell (21) and Brett Forsyth (14) got the side away, a familiar affliction set into the Panthers’ attack. Forsyth had an early chance dropped in the deep but couldn’t cash in afterwards as the small boundaries at Shepley Oval seemed fortified against Dandenong’s efforts. From set and ready to fire at 0/42, to scrambling to reconsolidate at 4/49, the old ways began to creep back in. It took a stand up innings from Tanner Stanton (21) to correct the sinking innings and he eventually found help down the order via first grade debutant Peter Cassidy (10no) - who
pushed the tally to 8/92 at the completion. Geelong’s chase was too sedate as Hayden Butterworth (39) went at a Twenty20 snail’s pace - striking at 75 as he and Josh McDonald (25) cantered through the opening phase of the clash. A couple of clutch wickets when the side was ready to launch proved devastating to leave Geelong in disarray. Butterworth’s glacially-paced innings drew to an end via Fairbanks as well as the visitors had no more answers to Dandenong’s persistent line and length. Dandenong faced Melbourne away on Sunday and just lost 4/122 to 7/136 despite the best efforts of James Wilcock (3/22) and the openers Forsyth (46) and Donnell (43).
Hoogenboom in good form By JARROD POTTER DDCA TURF 1 REVIES - ROUND 5 (Day 2) BOOMING Buckley Ridges celebrated a mighty victory as former Tooradin spearhead Lukas Hoogenboom found top speed against Heinz. BUCKLEY RIDGES v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS GIVING a monster margin a good shake, Heinz (259) was just pipped at the post by Buckley Ridges (283). Set the massive tally, the Cobras started slithering through the runs as Trevor Davies (67) started off the procession with Adam Semmens (23) and Matt Cox (30). The top order had smashed the Ridges about, but gave up the ghost soon after. It left too much work for Hari Krishan (69) and the rest of the attack as Lukas Hoogenboom (4/54) toiled to get his side through. Krishan cashed in at the postage stamp - belting six fours and four sixes - as he upped the Cobras’ run-rate, but the visitors ran out of steam just as Hoogenboom got his second wind. A gallant tail-wag from Rob Davies (23) and Lee Brown (12) kept forward momentum, but the clean-up was just about done as Wes Nicholas (2/40) and Susantha Pradeep (2/36) chipped in at the death. Buckley Ridges sits third and will face Berwick away. The Cobras host Lyndale to cap off 2015. HALLAM KALORA PARK v BERWICK REAR-GUARD 80s from Adam Watson and Josh Holden ensured Berwick (3/211) chased down Hallam Kalora Park (9/207) with plenty of time to spare. Battling to stay in the top four, the Bears’ top order was more than enough to hunt the total. Ryan Williamson (25) started strongly alongside Watson (89) and his mantle was carried on by returning Premier
Lukas Hoogenboom rocked through the Cobras in a stellar bowling performance from the Buckley Ridges' quick. 148086 Picture: JARROD POTTER opener Holden (89no). The Watson/Holden combination held a three-hour vigil in the middle as the total slowly but surely was chipped away. Holden slapped a couple of sixes to keep the scoreboard ticking and in the end the duo surpassed the Hawks with 15 overs left. Watson’s wicket out caught off Amila Perera (1/43) called an end to proceedings - leaving Holden stranded 11 runs shy of what would’ve been his first Berwick ton since the 2011/12 semi-final. Jordan Hammond (2/27) was miserly from his 10 overs but couldn’t crack the main partnership. Berwick faces Buckley Ridges while Hallam heads out to Sweeney Reserve to face the Magpies. CRANBOURNE v NARRE WARREN BATTING practice was the order of the day for Cranbourne (107 and 7/206) - with the Eagles not even bothering to
hunt down a 10-pointer against Narre Warren (72). After tying up first innings points last week, the Eagles set about giving the full roster an extended run in the middle as the opportunity for an outright didn’t eventuate. Jake Harrington (47) glued himself to the crease alongside Martin Kelly (37) and Brayden Roscoe (27) as the top order held firm against the Magpies’ finest. Jarryd Straker (3/54) spun his way through Kelly, Harrington and Lucas Ligt (3) while Janaka Liyanabadalge (2/76) also found some form in his 21 overs. Matt Chasemore (56no) came in at six and had a field day while skipper Steve Spoljaric didn’t even put the pads on - in what was a rare day off for the DDCA legend. Cranbourne heads to North Dandenong for the final fixture of 2015 while Narre hosts Hallam Kalora Park.

IT’S not uncommon for the Devon Meadows West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) District side to turn to a Hutchinson when it’s in a bind. But on Saturday, that Hutchinson wasn’t the Panthers’ player-coach Matt. Instead, it was his 59-year-old father Greg. Devon Meadows had somewhat of a last-minute injury crisis with Dave Carson withdrawing on Thursday and Matt Clayton - his replacement - on Friday. Couple that with Daniel Steet being unavailable due to work commitments, and the Panthers had some spots to fill. “I rang Dad to ask if he could fill in,” Matt, 33, said. “I knew he was up to it, so that was easy enough ... I just had to con him into saying yes.” Greg hadn’t played for at least 15 years, and he and Matt hadn’t played together for 20. When Matt was 13 the pair put on 137 in D Grade at Endeavour Hills. Greg is a former president there. He fielded at mid-wicket for
Matt and Greg – far right – come together to celebrate one of Mick Floyd’s three wickets on the weekend. 147967 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS much of the day on Saturday as the Panthers dismissed Clyde for 128. But with Devon Meadows resuming at a precarious 3/26 this week, he may still have a role to play with the willow. Greg said he didn’t have anything planned for Saturday before Matt called him, but was quick to add “I didn’t plan on playing!”
The two spoke to the Gazette from a job site, ironically just a stone’s throw away from the oval in Clyde. Greg was still feeling the after-effects of playing on Saturday, saying: “Put it this way - I’ve got a lot of respect for blokes over 60 who do this every week!” Nathan Worsteling (1) and Mick Floyd (3) will resume for Devon Meadows this week.

Smith roars home with bat and ball By DAVID NAGEL IT’S a saying we have all heard before, “it’s a funny game cricket”, and it has never been more appropriate after what took place between the top-two sides in West Gippsland Premier Division on Saturday. Pakenham (176) and Tooradin (59) packed more into 76 overs at Toomuc Reserve than the big man in the red suit will into his sleigh in two weeks’ time. It was high-octane action with 20 wickets falling for just 235 runs by day’s end. And it was two home-town heroes who stole the show. First, Chris Smith (107), the sublimely talented Pakenham opener who has made more runs than any man in the history of the Premier Division. Smith was the rudder that saved an ailing ship, blazing 17 fours on the way to his third century of the season as his team-mates fell around him. Tooradin’s attack, led by Aaron Avery (3/39), Dylan Sutton (3/53) and Josh Lownds (2/36) would have been smirking after rolling through the undefeated hosts in just 51.2 overs. But what happened next quickly wiped the smile from their faces. Led by irrepressible left-hander Jack Ryan (5/25), the Lions pro-
Pakenham gun Chris Smith shows a touch of class on his way to Picture: ROB CAREW 107 against Tooradin on Saturday. 147959 duced a session of cricket that longtime supporters claim to be the best they have ever seen. Ryan claimed the prized wicket of Tooradin captain Tom Hussey (0) with the third ball of the innings and then sliced through the Seagulls like a hot knife through butter. Remarkably, Ryan and the match-winning Smith (4/12) took just 23.5 overs to end the Seagulls’ innings.
“I really don’t know what to say, it was definitely a day for the cricket gods,” Lions skipper Dom Paynter said to the News before praising Ryan for his spell. “It was fast and aggressive, but also controlled and measured,” he said. Cardinia (2/35) spinner Dwayne Doig (6/70) has taken his tally to 27 wickets for the season after leading the Bulls into a powerful position

CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne Club Singles Championships THE Club Championships were played on Sunday before a big crowd who were given a great display of bowls by the form players of the club. Defending singles champion Lynne Wood was up against Helen Witherden who was trying to win her first title. Lynne started off well, gaining a good lead early in the game. But Helen kept coming back and refused to give in which made the encounter exciting until the final end when Lynne finally shut the gate and came through as back-to-back club champion, winning by 10 shots in the end with the score at 25 to 15. After the game, Lynne was relieved and happy with the victory but she could not take the smile off her face. Fritz Helle was looking for a back-to-back title while Steve Bentley was looking to win his first title after twice being runner-up in this event. The game was tight from the beginning, with both players playing superb bowls and the crowd cheering the great bowls played each end. With the score tied at the midway mark, Steve Bentley, determined not to be runner-up for the third time, found something inspirational that lifted him to the next level that gave him victory in the end by 12 shots with the final score at 25 to 13. Was Steve happy after the game? Oh Yeah.
against Merinda Park (152) at Gunton Oval. Doig showed his class by taking five top-order wickets on the trot to bring a halt to the Cobras’ early momentum. Anthony Craddock (56) and skipper Danny Diwell (25 not out) were best for the Cobras while Trav Wheller (3/26) provided valuable support for Doig. Upper Beaconsfield (4/124) has already claimed its second win for the season after outclassing Emerald (89) at home. Chad McDonald (4/20), Jayden Joyce (2/16), Scott Pitcher (2/1) and Tommy Tyrrell (2/21) did the damage for the Maroons, before Matt Hutson (42 not out) and Julian Bayard (31 not out) topped off a great day with an unbeaten 67-run stand. Hashan Goonetilleke (3/30) toiled manfully for the Bombers. And Kooweerup (3/122dec) looks primed for consecutive outright victories after dominating dayone against Cranbourne Meadows (118 and 4/49). This one would be over already if not for the batting of Shameera Weerasinghe (81 and 42 not out), who made 123 of the Rebels’ 167 runs for the day. Matt Davey (4/8), Jake Bardwell (56 not out) and skipper Michael Giles (49) were the Demons best performers.

Park eyes top-four slot HAMPTON PARK BOWLS THE Pennant bowls season is now half way through and the report card for Hampton Park is promising. Midweek Division 1 sits in fourth place with four wins and five losses but may need to reverse the ratio for a top four finish at the end of the season. Division 3 also sits in fourth place, but with a healthier 6-3 record and a repeat second half of the season should see it safely through. Saturday Division 1 currently sits seventh and will need to at least double its three wins to stay in this division. Division 3 is still in with a chance, sitting fifth with a 5-4 record and may need to improve its strike rate to make finals. And Division 6 will need to double its three wins for the season to remain in the same competition next season. Midweek Division 1 played Elsternwick Club at home for a 24 shot loss. The only winning rink was Marion Battaglia, Sean McDonald, Toni Sutton and Helen Lambert, who scored 2 on the last end to win 17-16. Peter Hayden, Ron Beverly, Andrew Brandolin and Denise Eastick went down 19-31 and Val Moore, Ann Westwell, Neville Hendrie and Chris Hendrie went down, 15-28. Hampton Park (1) 2-51 lost to Elsternwick Club (1) 14-75. Division 3 at Albert Park also had a loss. CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS PENNANT RESULTS ROUND 9 SATURDAY DIVISION 2 Pakenham 118 d Cranbourne RSL 46 A terrible day at Pakenham for the RSL, which after such a sterling effort last week, put in such a poor effort against the Lions. Everyone at the RSL knows they are better than today’s performance, so they all need to forget this week and focus on the next. RESULTS: K. Walker, J. Wylie, R. Crawford, B. Bradbury 13-23 F. Scicluna, G. Dore, J. Carretero, K. Hocking 12-28 R. Townley, J. Bignold, R. Chapman, N. Fell 11-32 R. Bligh, G. Jones, W. Brannan, M. Watkinson 10-35 DIVISION 5 Hampton 94 d Cranbourne RSL 82 The losing trend continued for the RSL with the top-ofthe-ladder side going down to Hampton. The team went from chocolates to boiled lollies in a week. That is the game of bowls; good sides forget quickly and move on to next week’s challenge. RESULTS: B. Hall, B. Walsh, K. Hickson, S. Hickson 17-20 I. Maat, P. Campion, M. Hodges, Y vd Wees 16-20 M. Ryan, M. MacIntyre, J. Black 19-25 K. Currie, M. Bobetic, D. Angee, J. Vowles 19-25 DIVISION 8 - TEAM 3 Cardinia Waters 51 d Cranbourne RSL 38 At least in this game the side actually won a rink. Well done to Peter Zimmerman’s team who were the only winners for the weekend. RESULTS: G. Payne, A. Underwood, P. Zimmerman 25-16 L. Meagher, B. Cook, P. Leake 13-35 TEAM 4 The RSL received a walkover from Dandenong RSL Rec, so the team enjoyed a nice cool drink in the air-conditioned RSL and an easy 14 points. MIDWEEK DIVISION 3 Berwick 55 d Cranbourne RSL 48 The RSL came crashing back to earth today after defeating the second top side last week; the side crashed against the second bottom team this week. Only John Spencer’s team did well, winning by seven shots. The other two teams had too many passengers today and were out bowled by the Berwick teams. The sun will rise tomorrow and I am sure the RSL will bounce back next week. RESULTS: R. Bligh, S. Brobyn, D. Hut, J. Spencer 21-14 P. Males, C. Butler, H. Rogers, R. Chapman 16-21 C. Arlove, H. Dietze, M. Hodges, Y vd Wees 11-20 DIVISION 4 Cranbourne RSL 81 d Edithvale 36. The RSL had a big win today with Steve Hickson’s team having a field day, winning by 27 shots. The other two teams led by Tom Bonney and John Black also had a good day, winning by 10 and eight shots respectively. A good team effort by well done everyone. RESULTS: P. Campion, M. Hogan, K. Hickson, S. Hickson 35-8 H. Reefman, V. Bonney, G. Dore, T. Bonney 21-10 B. Hall, A. Black, M. Bobetic, J. Black 26-17
