Georgia’s got latest edition of GC covered

‘Huge opportunity’

City first to greet campers

Captivating actress Georgia Chara, pictured, has found her place on the screen but her heart remains firmly in the Geelong region. The star of gritty TV series Wentworth loves nothing more than staying home even though she’s working on securing an American working visa to further her career. “Geelong is great,” she tells journalist Emily Robinson in the latest edition of Geelong Coast (GC) magazine. “I like to go for runs along the Barwon River and people say hello and it’s lovely. “The people are great. I love it.” Georgia and a host of other local faces feature in the summer edition of GC. Alana Mitchelson meets refugees forging new lives in Geelong, rising Surf Coast food blogger Kelly Lowdon presents some succulent summer recipes and the stunning morning imagery of photographer Lynden Smith comes to life in GC’s glossy pages. Full of stories and pictures of local people, places, issues and ideas, GC is available now at all good newsagents.

Campervan travellers will be welcomed to Geelong after receiving cold shoulders along the Surf Coast. Tourism industry figures said Geelong’s status as Victoria’s first council to partner a new Community Welcomes Recreational Vehicles program could unlock tourism opportunities. The program highlighted places that actively encouraged recreational vehicle (RV) travellers to visit, said Victorian Caravan Parks Association (VicParks) chief Elizabeth White. Australia’s fleet of RVs had grown by 34 per cent since 2008 to more than 500,000 to become a “huge opportunity” for councils, she said. “The RV market is booming in Australia and this program will allow local councils to capitalise on this growth while offering a better travel experience for consumers.” The VicParks program was designed to provide “a consistent welcoming message” to RV travellers, including a template sign for councils to display so travellers knew facilities were available for RVs, Ms White said. “With over 2300 camp sites available in the City of Greater Geelong,

this is the perfect place to launch this program and we are delighted to have the council as our launch partner.” Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula tourism boss Roger Grant welcomed the City’s partnership with the free program. “Greater Geelong is very well placed to embrace this wonderful new initiative,” he said. “Our region attracts over five million visitors annually and we’re well supported with numerous holiday parks of outstanding quality.” Ms White said VicParks was “continuing to discuss the program” with other councils. RV travellers have previously experienced opposition on the Surf Coast where tourism operators have wanted council to deny any free parking spaces for campervans. RV proponents have pointed out that users still spend money during visits, promising an economic windfall for areas that welcome RV travellers seeking free camp sites. The potential value of campervan visitations has attracted some parts of the Surf Coast, with Winchelsea earlier this year seeking council backing to be declared an ‘RV Friendly Town’.

City property ‘in top 100’ of growth, profit ranking An exclusive new property report has identified Geelong as a top-100 suburb for growth and profit. Geelong came in at 82 in the Your Investment Property Annual Suburbs Guide, ranking Australia’s top 100 suburbs with the highest potential for capital growth and rental returns. The city won marks for its comparatively low median house and unit prices, solid rental yields and price-growth forecasts. The report gave Geelong’s economy a score of 8/10, while new infrastructure plans achieved 7/10 and amenities 8/10. “Geelong has emerged as one of Australia’s leading non-capital cities, with its recent strong growth in knowledge-based industries such as health, research, biotechnology and education,”

the guide said. “Geelong offers inner-city, coastal, suburban and rural living opportunities at far greater value than what you’ll find in its nearest capital city, Melbourne. “With the suburb’s lively cosmopolitan city, waterfront precinct and world-famous beaches, supported by extensive transport infrastructure and a growing economy, Geelong’s median house price of just over half a million dollars is comparatively inexpensive for all the perks it includes.” The guide cited a median price of $537,500 for houses and $478,000 for units, a rental yield of 4 per cent for both and a vacancy rate of 4.31 per cent. “Supply and demand are well balanced in Geelong. Houses score 54/100 and units are at a dead-

even 50/100,” the guide added. For its best buys, the guide recommended buying “something unique, such as a character home with charm” to drive capital growth. Homes east of Yarra Street near Geelong Hospital and the central city area received the tick of approval. Victoria had 12 of the top 100 suburbs but Queensland led the list with 35. The report contrasted with other recent figures showing property prices flat-lining in Geelong over the past year. The Indy reported in October that median house prices had grown 0.6 per cent in the previous 12 months which was less than half the rate of inflation.

Drowning rates Men are almost three and a half times more likely to drown in the Geelong region, according to new figures. Life Saving Victoria reported during Water Safety Week that 80 per cent of the region’s drowning victims in the past decade were also aged over 25.

‘Bullies’ claim Geelong councillors Andy Richards and Jan Farrell have a “history of bullying”, a state MP has told parliament. Liberal local government spokesperson David Davis named the pair when asking in the upper house whether they would be a “focus” of a state inquiry into Geelong’s council governance.

Road death One man is dead and another remained in a critical condition yesterday (Thursday) after separate road accidents near Moriac early this week. Police said Leopold’s Tim Hay, 21, died when his vehicle hit a power pole about 1.40am Tuesday before a truck driver was airlifted to hospital after his vehicle ploughed through nine fences hours later.

Rig leaves A 51m-high oil rig has left its temporary anchorage off Portarlington for a journey to Singapore, according to Corio Bay’s harbour master. Dilip Abraham said the rig was scheduled to sail through Port Phillip Heads on a heavy-lift vessel last night before embarking on the two-week trip.

Cheap flights come with warning Jetstar is offering $19 tickets to its two newest destinations - Adelaide and Hobart - but now includes early warnings about extra costs on its website. Last month the Federal Court found that Jetstar was misleading and deceptive about the price of particular advertised airfares. The finding was handed

ment and Avalon Airport to keep the airline operating locally. Avalon will have three weekly Jetstar flights to Adelaide and four to Hobart from March, adding to existing Sydney and Gold Coast services. Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the announcement was “another great day” for Avalon Airport workers and

down following proceedings brought by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Jetstar offered the special introductory one-way fares between Avalon-Hobart and Avalon-Adelaide between 10am and 2pm on Tuesday. The extra destinations are part of a $12 million deal between Jetstar, the State Govern-

the community. “We’re committed to growing the local aviation industry because it means jobs for locals and a stronger state.” Tourism and Major Events Minister John Eren said the extra destinations would mean jobs and growth for the local community. “We take growing Victoria’s visitor economy really seriously,

and new and improved airline services are a major boost to tourism.” The Federal Court found that Jetstar’s representations about specific advertised airfares made on its website in 2013, and its mobile site in 2014, were false or misleading. The ACCC alleged that Jetstar failed to adequately disclose

an additional booking and service fee of $8.50 and $7.70 respectively charged on bookings paid using most credit cards or PayPal. The ACCC’s case was that the fees were only disclosed to consumers once they had moved through a number of stages of the booking process.

Cheesed off at bus ‘disservice’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Bus services are actually a “disservice” for Portarlington, Indented Heads and St Leonards, users have said. Vice-president of community group StayinginPortarlington Jenny Wills said locals were fed up with being treated like second class citizens when it came to public transport. Ms Wills called for the immediate reinstatement of an hourly bus service over the Christmas holiday period. She said the resumed service would be an “interim step” to improving public transport accessibility for people on the northern Bellarine Peninsula. Ms Wills said route 60 buses from Geelong to St Leonards via Portarlington regularly terminated short at Drysdale. Almost half the route 60 buses to Geelong railway station on Monday to Friday started at Drysdale, “completely ignoring” passengers in St Leonards, Indented Heads and Portarlington, she said. “They have really stuffed up with the new timetables and we desperately need to revert back to an hourly service while awaiting any changes.” Ms Wills questioned why towns on the northern Bellarine Peninsula lacked an outlet to buy myki cards. She said a petition would call for Public Transport Victoria to reinstate the hourly bus service. The petition would be launched at 2.30pm on 17 December outside Portarlington’s post office and Woolworths supermarket, she said. The petition would also be available in local businesses and online. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan acknowledged that buses provided a critical service for the Portarlington community. “A workshop was recently held to hear directly from local residents and passengers,” Ms Allan said. A PTV spokesperson said myki cards could be purchased or topped up on board route 60 buses, online at ptv.vic.gov.au or via PTV’s call centre.

This timely turkey helps Janet feed 25 for Christmas Winning a turkey came just in time for Geelong Indy reader Janet Watson Mathews. With 25 to feed at her Highton home for Christmas lunch, Janet said the tasty bird would be a welcome addition to her menu. Like most Talkin’ Turkey winners, Wendy was surprised to be one of the five entrants to claim a weekly prize. “This sort of thing never happens to me,” she told the Indy. The other weekly winners were Barbara Fordem, Melissa

Donaldson, Leanne Donovan and Phyllis Rea. They were among numerous entrants who found five turkeys hidden in separate ads in last week’s Indy. Talkin’ Turkey is giving away five turkeys a week before Christmas. Entrants can identify fewer ads with turkeys but priority for the draw goes to entries with all five. Talkin’ Turkey finishes in the 18 December edition of the Indy, so readers have two more weeks to win a prize in time for Christmas lunch. Entrants must be able to collect their

Double Take An androgynous Jesus is raising eyebrows and threatening a pile-up with a racy show beside Barrabool Road. Rather than a Third Coming, Gnawarre’s beardedlady Son of Christ is a mannequin whose creator has supplied just a little too much detail. The roadside Jesus is affixed to the pinnacle of a hay bale stack in long, flowing robes. Possibly by design, gusts of wind regularly lift Jesus’s hem high enough to expose a cluster of short and curlies to passing traffic. Some might question the artistic merit but at least the sight amused Double Take’s correspondent enough to stop for a photo - thoughtfully from side-on. “Nothing like a good sacrilegious, politically-correct, transgender, half-naked Jesus to spice up Chrissie,” he laughed, “although it looks like the bearded sheila who won Eurovision.” While on issues religious, another Double Take contributor recently returned from India where he was fortunate to avoid bombardment with human organs. While on a bus tour of Mumbai he learned all about the small local Parsi community whose members follow Iranian prophet Zoroaster. Our correspondent was intrigued to learn that the Parsi lay out their dead atop a tower to be devoured by vultures, which circle ominously above the city’s skyscrapers. Unfortunately, one of the birds pecked off more

than it could chew, dropping an intestine into the city’s renowned hanging gardens during our man’s visit. Fortunately, a separate tour group attending his conference encountered the grisly detritus the day before he was to visit the gardens. “Luckily it wasn’t my group or they’d have seen my guts, too,” he said. “Ho, ho, ho” is being drowned out by ding, ding, ding in Westfield Geelong - but it’s not the sound of cash registers echoing around Santa’s grotto. The backdrop for the jolly fellow in red is clearly not the North Pole - more scaffold pole - as contractors climb over the travelators in very un-elflike costumes. Shoppers have no need for aerobics classes before eating their festive fill, either, they can just climb up the scaffold-supported stairway to the food court to take in the Christmas ambience. Just days after Geelong Cats chief Brian Cook complained the club would lose money playing home games in Melbourne, the team’s apparently had a change of heart. The Cats ventured to Melbourne for a “major announcement” yesterday instead of holding the media conference at its home ground, as it normally does. The MCG certainly holds a much greater capacity than Simonds Stadium but it’s doubtful the PORN AGAIN: Gnarwarre's bearded-lady Jesus flashes for the camera. media conference was a sell-out.

Ford has agreed to extend its sponsorship of Geelong Cats beyond its factory closure in October next year, the two organisations have announced. The car marker flagged last year that it would cease manufacturing in Australia in 2016 at a cost of 1200 jobs. But the world’s longest running sports sponsorship will run until the end of 2020. The arrangement began in 1925, ironically offering Geelong footballers jobs at Ford’s Norlane operations. Geelong chief Brian Cook said he was thrilled with the extension to a 95-year partnership. “Ford and the Cats have supported each other over this long journey together,” Mr Cook said. “We both believe we will continue to be at the forefront of our fields in future years and we’ll help each other achieve that success. “There is, and has been, no more enduring relationship and a greater team than Ford Motor Company and the Cats since 1925.” Ford Australia president Graeme Whickman said the sponsorship extension symbolised Ford's ongoing investment in Australia and Geelong.

Call to restore train wi-fi funding By ALANA MITCHELSON State Government should reverse a decision to “abandon its promise” of free wi-fi for Geelong and Ballarat trains, according to a Liberal MP. The Government announced last week that wi-fi would not be provided from a remaining $18 million of its regional connectivity budget. Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay said the former coalition government had committed $40 million in the 2014/2015 budget to fix V/Line mobile phone black spots and deliver free wi-fi by the end of this year.

“An estimated 40 per cent of the distance travelled between regional city centres and Melbourne is not currently covered by a reliable mobile reception, causing frustrating drop-outs for regional rail travellers,“ Mr Ramsay said. “The Andrews Government has betrayed regional Victoria by axing the funding for free wi-fi on V/Line trains. “The Andrews Government needs to explain to regional Victorian rail passengers where the $40 million is now being redirected.” Small Business, Innovation and Trade Minister Philip Dalidakis said mobile black spots had

priority over internet services. “With more than 4.1 million passenger trips each year, the Geelong-Melbourne rail line is one of Victoria’s busiest and the Andrews Labor Government will deliver an end to mobile calls dropping out,” Mr Dalidakis said. “People will be able to both make and take phone calls as well as use their existing data plans, ensuring that you will not miss a phone call again from a loved one telling you they are home or an email from a business customer making a purchase. “Wi-fi services would only benefit 75 per cent of commuters, so the decision was made to re-pri-

oritise and fix the mobile black spots on Victoria’s five busiest regional rail corridors: Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, Seymour and Traralgon.” Mr Dalidakis said the project would provide “big improvements to mobile services for all regional rail commuters” along the routes. “It’s also expected to boost productivity for business commuters, contributing an estimated $20 million per annum in additional revenue for the economy.” Construction of the mobile towers is set to begin in mid-2016 with improvements by late next year.

Can you spare some Christmas food for needy, asks group of volunteers By ALANA MITCHELSON

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Spare Meals Geelong's Tina Taylor, Kristy Cooper and Carin Shiell get into the spirit of Christmas.

A network of volunteers has launched a Christmas food drive so members can cook festive dishes for Geelong’s needy. Spare Meals Geelong coordinator Kristy Cooper said recipients had burst into tears on her doorstep upon collecting meals. “It’s really moving,” she said. “My house is a drop-off and pick-up point for donations and the responses we get from people are varied. “Sometimes people are very quiet and embarrassed and you really feel for them.” Spare Meals coordinators are bracing for a busy Christmas after the group doubled in size with 3000 more Facebook members in the past year. They expect demand for donations to increase toward the end of December and throughout January. “I think a lot of people can blow their budget over Christmas and then there are back-to-school costs not long after that,” Ms Cooper said. “If you’re doing some Christmas food shopping or Christmas baking, then we ask

people to think about putting an extra packet of something in the trolley or making an extra batch of cookies to donate to someone less fortunate. “I can proudly say that we haven’t been out of meals for over a year. Between the support of our kitchen and the community we’ll usually have 50 to 100 incoming meals a day during weekdays.” Candy canes, bon-bons, mince pies, lolly bags, Christmas cakes or puddings, shortbread cookies and advent calendars have been popular among theme-specific donations since the drive launched in midNovember. The project intended to reduce food wastage by helping people in the community, Ms Cooper said. About 150 families received food weekly, she said. Spare Meals has drop-off/pick-up points at Lara, Corio, Norlane, Norlane West, Hamlyn Heights, Grovedale, Belmont, East Geelong, Breakwater and Leopold. Ms Cooper said more information was available at facebook.com/groups/SpareMeals.

NDIS gripes few, maybe from fear By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A lack of complaints about Geelong-headquartered National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has prompted fears that clients are too scared to complain. Victorian Disability Services Commissioner Laurie Harkin said the biggest obstacle to improvements for many with a disability was fear that complaining might have consequences such as loss of services. The Geelong Indy has reported over the past two years on NDIS clients citing serious issues with the scheme and its administrator the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). Last year a parliamentary committee heard that problems plaguing the NDIA were risking the lives of disabled people. Figures involved in the sector told the Indy that NDIA kept clients in the dark about complaints procedures. The agency also warned of possible cost blowouts as part of a state-wide roll out of the Barwon trial site.

The Indy reported in September that Premier Daniel Andrews had signed a $5.1 billion bilateral agreement with the Commonwealth to roll out the scheme to an estimated 105,000 Victorians. “The job of complaints handling offices is to ensure that people with a disability have an equal voice and right to speak out,” Mr Harkin said. “In the NDIS Barwon trial site we have seen a smaller than expected number of complaints to complaints handling offices. It would be unrealistic to think people are overwhelmingly happy with every aspect of their service but rather that they are either not aware of their right, not informed about who to contact or fearful to raise issues. “This is why we held an information session to inform people about who to contact if dissatisfied with the NDIA, disability service provider or community mental health provider." The participant information session about complaint pathways included the Commonwealth Ombudsman, Disability Services Commissioner and Mental Health Complaints Commissioner.

Police want help to find missing 52-year-old Hamilton man Gaeme Mallinson who is known to frequent the Bell Post Hill area. Mr Mallinson was last seen at Warrnambool Base Hospital about 3pm on 2 December. Police said they and his family had concerns for his welfare because he required daily medication. Man-chicken wins prize for Lanse, 7 A chicken with human tendencies has earned an art prize for a Torquay seven-year-old from Belgium. Lanse Vanhaelen won the Young Australian Arts Awards prize for Ted the Chickenman which he painted during holiday art classes with Ocean Grove’s Kaz McGlynn. The subject of Lanse’s painting was a chicken that dressed as a human to discover the world, explained a spokesperson for the awards. “The award is a huge accolade for a little boy who moved to Victoria from Belgium with his family just three years ago and could not speak a word of English,” the spokesperson said.

“He’s bright, social, funny and an animal lover. “Along with his obsession with art, he’s quickly developing a passion for surfing away the early mornings with his dad and big brother, Thor.” The award was not the first accolade for the Torquay College grade one student, the spokesperson said. “Lanse was awarded Best Illustrator of the Year at Torquay College for his book The Cave of Doom, a story that he not only wrote but illustrated himself. “It’s clear Lanse has a big future ahead of him and that this award is just the beginning.”

Jobs boost from projects funding A $1.2 MILLION funding injection for two regional projects will create 38 new jobs, Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson has announced. Lethbridge Airport’s fuel infrastructure project and Diversitat’s Healthy Living Centre for Ageing in Norlane received the money under Round Two of the Australian Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund. Ms Henderson said the installation of permanent fuel tanks and other infrastructure at Lethbridge Airport would enable a host of other businesses to utilise the facilities. “The Lethbridge Airport fuel infrastructure project will provide a permanent fuel supply to support the growing Geelong region aviation tourism and commercial market as well as the current and future recreational aviation fleet,” Ms Henderson said. “Lethbridge Airport is rapidly expanding, creating further demand for improved access to fuel. “This project will provide critical operational capability for both fire-fighting assets and air ambulance helicopter services in western Victoria. “Modelling indicates that by 2021, fuel uplifting would have a total economic impact of $4.44m per annum, with at least 14 full-time jobs.” Ms Henderson said Diversitat’s new Healthy Living Centre would provide programs and services for communities facing significant challenges in accessing aged care services. “The centre will be purpose-built for ease of access and mobility and include a high-needs-dedicated area,” she said. “The location of the centre in Norlane will provide a significant economic boost for the region. “The construction phase will provide 24 new jobs and once completed will employ 16 staff with allowance for four new positions.” Ms Henderson said both projects were “identified as priority infrastructure by local communities”. “The fund encourages communities to form partnerships to deliver projects between not-for-profit organisations, local, state and territory governments as well as the private sector.” The National Stronger Regions Fund provides $1 billion over five years to promote economic growth and address disadvantage in Australia’s regions.

AGENDA: Sarah Henderson, right, with Geelong-based CSIRO researchers Shaun Smith and Jasjeet Kaur.

Geelong’s ‘big winners’ from PM’s Innovation Agenda Two of Geelong’s largest institutions are “big winners” from Malcolm Turnbull’s Innovation Agenda, according to a local MP who helped him topple former Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Liberal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said Deakin University and the CSIRO’s Geelong opera-

tions would benefit from the agenda’s extra funding for research. “The CSIRO Innovation Fund and the CSIRO Accelerator Program will provide researchers with the support they need to develop their ideas, test them and take them to the market. “With CSIRO’s Australian Animal Health Laboratory and its

manufacturing research facility based in Geelong, this presents our region with very substantial opportunities,” Ms Henderson said. “The Federal Government is also driving greater research-industry collaboration by introducing new research block grant funding arrangements for universities

including Deakin University that will give equal emphasis to success in industry and other end-user engagement and to research quality. “The Innovation Agenda will drive business growth, increase entrepreneurship and forge closer links between research and industry for Corangamite.”

‘Paltry wages’ in poultry industry Dodgy labour-hire practices were exploiting workers in the local chicken processing industry, a Geelong hearing of a Labour Hire Industry and Insecure Work Inquiry heard this week. A labour hire agency had got away with thousands of dollars in unpaid wages to workers in the Geelong poultry industry, members of the National Union of Workers (NUW) told the hearing. NUW witnesses said labour hire firm Tula Opportunity engaged to provide workers to Turi Foods, also known as Golden Farms, a local poultry processing facility, from 2014 to 2015. “The company’s sole director also ran a number of other small labour hire companies that supplied workers to other poultry processing facilities around Australia,” the witness said.

(This) highlights clearly the need for regulation in the labour hire industry to protect workers from unscrupulous labour hire agencies and contractors “Tula Opportunity provided approximately 80 workers to Turi Foods. During the second half of 2014 a number of workers joined NUW. “These workers advised NUW that Tula Opportunity was paying people between $14 and $17 per hour. The minimum rate of pay for a poultry processing worker at the time was $21.79 per hour. “Workers were also not receiving other entitlements such as overtime payments, shift loadings,

penalty rates or superannuation contributions. “NUW made a number of unsuccessful attempts to address the underpayments with Tula Opportunity. Following these attempts, NUW made four applications to the Federal Circuit Court in January 2015 to recover the underpayments totalling over $20,000. “The first two applications were heard and granted in July 2015. The Federal Circuit Court ordered that two NUW members be paid

‘Cute Factor’ wins Geelong national cheerleading title Cute by name and nature, Geelong’s youngest elitelevel cheerleaders are now Australian champions. The 15 girls aged eight and under won an Australian Allstar Cheerleading and Dance Federation National Cheer Champions title in Melbourne last weekend. Operator of their Cheer Geelong gym Kirralee Badham said the “aptly named Cute Factor” team won its section against 10 other teams from around the country. “The talented and fit little athletes have been training twice a week all year to master their tumbling, stunting and dance skills in order to smash out an action-packed two-and-a-half-minute routine that would impress the judges and large arena of spectators,” Ms Badham said. “Having previously placed third then second at the state competition, they reached their peak at just the right time to walk away with the enviable first place trophy.” Ms Badham’s gym sent almost 200 athletes to perform 40 floor routines over the two days of the championships.

NUMBER ONE: Cheerleading champions, at back, Violet, Ella, Emily, Gabby, Mylie, Faith, Lily, Montana and, at front, Olivia, Sienna, Avah, Marley and Lilli.

$7839.43 and $1748.65 respectively. “Following the orders being served on Tula Opportunity, the company was voluntarily wound up and placed into external administration. Neither of the workers received the money they were owed. “Tula Opportunity had no assets and very little capital and its director was able to grossly underpay employees and walk away with no consequences. “(This) highlights clearly the need for regulation in the labour hire industry to protect workers from unscrupulous labour hire agencies and contractors.” The Independent was unable to obtain comment from Turi Foods before going to press.

Lara estate ‘the best in Victoria’ A Lara residential estate is the best in Victoria, according to an urban developers industry awards for excellence. Grand Lakes was the region’s first winner of best residential estate in 20 years of the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s Victorian awards. The estate also won an award for environmental excellence. The win put the Bisinella Developments estate in the running for a national award. The company’s Richard Bisinella accepted the state prize in front of 700 awards guests at Crown Palladium last Friday. The judges described Grand Lakes, which was completed earlier this year, as “a brave development” with “a strong focus on community, integration and connectivity”. Two-thousand residents have moved into the 807-lot estate since it opened.

Board dismisses call on proceeds By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

HEALTHY: Katie and Robyn with Woodlands Preschool kids.

Healthy habits a priority for our kids A program teaching local kinder kids healthy habits aims to fulfil its six-point priority list for the first time at five centres next year, according to an administrator. The preschools ticked off four points in the Healthy Together Geelong program this year and would earn Victorian Government recognition if they completed the rest in 2016, said health promotion officer Carly Monaghan. The program targets healthy eating, physical activity, mental health and wellbeing, safe environments, sun protection and tobacco control. The five local participants nearing the finish line are Woodlands, Portarlington and Beacon Points preschools and Ocean Grove and Leopold kindergartens. Healthy Together Geelong congratulated the centres for their “commitment to creating a healthy and supportive environment for their community”, Ms Monaghan said.

“The passion and motivation from the centre directors of these services has been a key driver of this success, along with parent involvement and management support. “They have worked extremely hard to change the culture of their services, leading to better health and learning outcomes for children now and in the future.” Cancer Council Victoria program manager Anthony Bernardi said 80 early childhood services in Geelong had joined the program. “The program empowers early childhood centres with the help and support they need to create a healthy service. “By making healthy changes the Geelong services are giving children in their care a great start to their education and development.” A Victorian Government achievement program supports the development of healthy early childhood services, schools and workplaces.

Bellarine Community Health has knocked back a community petition asking for proceeds from the sale of Ann Nichol House to be returned to the community. “Our lawyers have determined there is no legal basis for the petition claims,” said the organisation’s chair, Hazel Ingram said. “The petition does not recognise that a substantial amount of the sale proceeds from Ann Nichol House were a return of funds to Bellarine Community Health (BCH) for monies that we had previously poured into the facility, including a $3 million upgrade 10 years ago.” Ms Ingram said Bellarine Community Health also had responsibility for the ongoing upkeep of the aged care facility over the past decade. “We could not, in good governance, comply with the notion of sale proceeds of our aged care facilities being provided to benefit a single community group or individual. “However, funds are being returned to the community in other ways. We have set aside $1.2 million of sale proceeds to a community grants program and we have appointed an independently selected advisory committee to govern the fund. It’s up to the community how those funds are distributed.” Ms Ingram said requests to use the funds for services for the elderly were outside the Bellarine Community Health mandate to meet primary health care needs regardless of age, gender or cultural background. “As a board we are committed to ensuring our capital assets including the proceeds from the sale of Ann Nichol House are spent on projects that will deliver a wide range of services across the entire Bellarine.”

Ms Ingram said the projects included a Point Lonsdale “flagship” community health centre. “We have a government commitment for continued services from this facility which last year managed more than 10,000 community health client visits. The site is home to the Bellarine’s public dental program and is the only location big enough to house some of BCH’s larger programs such as community nursing which delivers services to the entire region.” Bellarine Aged Care Association (BACA) circulated the petition amid a community outcry over the sale. Association spokesperson Tim Walsh said the response from Bellarine Community Health was dismissive of community concerns. “It totally misses point and the principle behind our petition. “Bellarine Community Health has again distorted facts to suit their agenda,” Mr Walsh said. “Never has BACA asked for a refund on donations. What BACA wants is the proceeds of the sale of aged care assets put back into services for this age group. BCH claim they spent $3 million of their own money to upgrade and extend Ann Nichol House. How much of that $3 million came from the closure and sale of Sims Lodge? “BACA does not challenge the need for a high quality centre in Point Lonsdale. “Our objection is that the proposed community health centre is part of a major speculative property development. “BACA has long held the view that BCH lacks transparency, accountability and probity in their financial management and community responsiveness.” Mr Walsh said Bellarine Community Health’s “deliberate misinterpretation and dismissal” of the petition would “only serve to further polarise this community”.

Local activists ‘welcome support for fracking ban’ Local activists have welcomed a report on Victoria’s fracking ban. Frack Free Moriac’s Alison Marchant said the parliamentary committee report did not recommend lifting the moratorium. She said Labor MPs Shaun Leane and Harriet Shing, Greens MP Samantha Dunn and Fishers and Shooters MP Daniel Young recommended that the State Government support the ban. “They clearly stated that this industry, if allowed to go ahead, threatened the agriculture industry without any guarantees that water, the environment and communities will be protected. “Shaun Leane made a passionate statement saying that the coalition’s support of a highly regulated industry was asking taxpayers to fund and resource an industry that taxpayers don’t want. “This makes no sense and is a huge ask of the taxpayer purse. “He also advocated that the money would be better spent on renewables that do have community support. The committee was divided on the issue, delivering four minority reports instead of a majority recommendation. Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the reports reflected a range of views. The existing moratorium would remain in place while the Government considered its response ahead of releasing a policy in the first half of 2016, she said. “We recognise that communities and industry want certainty. We will prepare a response with full consideration of the economic, social and environmental impacts on Victorians. Greens energy spokesperson Ellen Sandell said Government MPs were divided on fracking, so the Premier must make a decision. “Some Labor MPs have felt the pressure from

Suburbs ‘safer’ for traffic fines Six suburban Geelong speed and red light cameras caught only 53 motorists between them during the September quarter, latest figures have revealed. The 53 drivers paid a total of $20,087 in fines for the low number of infringements. The totals contrasted Geelong’s freeway camera system, which extracted almost $5.3 million in fines from 23,118 drivers. A camera at the intersection of Thompson Road and Separation Street, Bell Park, averaged one infringement a month for the three months from July to September. The camera’s fine revenue was $1137. A camera at the intersection of Church Street and Shannon Avenue, Geelong West, nabbed five drivers who paid $1895. Cameras at the intersections of Princes Highway and Purnell Road, Corio, and Settlement and Torquay roads, Belmont, each caught nine drivers for $3411. South Geelong’s intersection of Moorabool and Fyans streets snared 11 driver, costing them $4169, while a camera at Shannon Avenue and Aphrasia Street, Newtown, caught 16 for $6064. Another 230 motorists paid $61,190 at the remaining five suburban cameras. A controversial red light camera at the intersection of The Boulevard and Melbourne Road, Norlane, caught 117 drivers for fines totalling $43,929 after a high of more than $400,000 every quarter in 2013 following the opening of an adjacent Bunnings store. Department of Justice’s Cameras Save Lives website showed that one camera on the Princes Freeway at the Point Cook-Forsyth Road Bridge Geelong-bound was the fourth highest grossing hotspot in the state. The camera nabbed 5856 drivers with fines totalling $1.33 million, a 29 per cent increase on the previous quarter.

Body builds bridges after sacking

MISSING LINK: Ward councillor Lindsay Ellis, Lisa Neville and Diane James on the new bridge.

A MINISTER who sacked the body managing the northern Bellarine Peninsula’s foreshore has praised its replacement for “listening to the community”. Bellarine Bayside Committee of Management was now making a “greater investment” in improving foreshore amenities, Environment Minister Lisa Neville said. She praised the committee after opening a new St Leonards Creek pedestrian bridge, describing it as a “missing link” in the area’s coastal trail. Ms Neville, also the Member for Bellarine, sacked the committee in February, citing concerns about a “lack of engagement” and the “management of the foreshore”. Late last month, committee chair Diane James announced that a new chief executive officer,

John Nankervis, would take over from interim CEO Nick Wynn in January. Ms Neville raised the new bridge as an example of the foreshore committee’s work for “local communities and campers alike”. The St Leonards community had raised the need for the bridge during a workshop on locations for beach renourishment, she said. “This is a great example of the work done in partnership between the Victorian Government and the Bellarine Bayside Foreshore Committee of Management, (which has) restored and enhanced the northern Bellarine environment for the benefit and enjoyment of local communities, holidaymakers and visitors. “Bellarine Bayside Committee of Management (is) listening to the community and (is) making a

greater investment into the improvement of onground foreshore amenities and coastal experiences for the enjoyment of local communities and campers alike.” Ms Neville said pedestrians and cyclists had to use the roadside to cross the creek before the bridge, “creating a potential public safety hazard”. The bridge also spanned two seasonal camping areas to provide users with “an increased level of service and amenity value,” she said. Ms James said the bridge was part of a foreshore master plan that the committee was “continuing to deliver in consultation with the local community”.

$5.5b project to ‘cut drive times’ A green light for a proposed Western Distributor would create the “longest managed motorway system in Australia from Geelong to Pakenham”, according to Premier Daniel Andrews. Mr Andrews said State Government would partner with Transurban on the $5.5 billion project, including upgrades to the Monash Freeway and Webb Dock. Mr Andrews said a reference business case showed the project stacked up financially, delivering a benefit of $1.30 for every dollar invested. The Monash Freeway upgrade would provide a network-wide solution, streamlining traffic from Geelong to Pakenham, he said. “We’re getting on with the Western Distributor to provide an alternative to the West Gate Bridge.

My name is Cameron and I’m a Home Lending Solutions Manager, an authorised representative of the Commonwealth Bank. I can assist with the full range of CommBank products and services, including: A loan to purchase your first home. An investment loan to expand your property portfolio. Refinancing your current home loan to Commonwealth Bank.

“Motorists will see immediate travel time savings of up to 20 minutes a day - almost two hours a week Victorians can spend at home with family instead of stuck in traffic on the West Gate or Monash.” The project would take 6000 trucks off the West Gate Bridge and create 5600 jobs. The West Gate Freeway would be widened from eight to 12 lanes between the M80 and Williamstown Road with a tunnel under Yarraville and a second river crossing over the Maribyrnong River. The project will be funded through a combination of tolling on the Western Distributor, an extension of Transurban’s CityLink concession and state and Commonwealth contributions.

Buckets & Bouquets

Letters

Bouquets to Cheryl at Geelong Regional Library Corporation’s city branch. Her friendly, helpful, patient and informative manner is excellent. Cheryl’s help and patience are very appreciated. Old Bloke, Herne Hill

Untapped potential of city’s heritage highlights I recently observed an advertisement for a Ballarat heritage group, unfunded by any council or State Government. The group offered a package including a heritage train trip from Geelong and Melbourne to Ballarat. Tourists could enjoy Ballarat’s historical/heritage establishments, eateries and, I believe, Sovereign Hill. Surely Geelong, with its river, bay and nearby seaside resorts, has potential to draw in the tourist dollars likewise. Allow me some dreamtime imagery of a Geelong package: tourists arrive via a train of suitable vintage period then, via a vintage double-decker bus, travel to Fyansford near the hotel. They board a steam-powered launch or paddle-style riverboat, stopping at Barwon Edge Boat-

Buckets to a pair of neighbours in my father’s street for their garish Christmas lights. You are attracting additional traffic of rubbernecks who don’t have their eyes on the road. Yes, Christmas is fun but it shouldn’t also be a safety hazard. Try a daytime display. Concerned Resident, Norlane Bouquets to Darryn Lyons and City of Greater Geelong. My aunt and uncle met a couple from England at the lighting of the floating Christmas tree who heard about it last year and came to Geelong to see it this year. Niece, East Geelong Bouquets to the lovely person who brought home our son’s forgotten bike for safekeeping on the weekend and returned it to the school office on Monday. We are certain the new bike would have been stolen before we remembered it was left behind. Little Miss Scatterbrain, Lara Bouquets to Santa’s little helpers for making our Aussie Christmas shine with a special tree at the corner of Messmate Road, Torquay. It is decorated each year and I’m sure it brings smiles to a lot of faces at this time of year. Gayle B, Torquay Buckets to Male And Never Been To Africa (Buckets & Bouquets, 4 December). PLENTY TO SEE: A heritage tour of Geelong, including its maritime museum, could be a tourism winner for the city, says a reader.

The meaning of employment I was deeply moved by the interviews with former Alcoa workers (Geelong Independent, 27 November). “Being denied work really gets you down,” said one former employee. Another stated: “We just want to feel worthwhile, be part of something.” Most of us could surely feel empathy with these sentiments. Unemployment and under-employment are huge dilemmas facing Geelong at present and I appreciate the courage of these former Alcoa workers in being willing to speak about their own predicament. I also commend the Geelong Indy for highlighting the destructive effect these issues are having on many in our community. I realise there are no easy answers but we must at least be willing to acknowledge the scale of the problem and seek to fully support those affected. Society, via government, council and business, has a responsibility to make sure every person seeking work has meaningful, properly-paid employment. Meanwhile, those without enough work at present also need a living income that allows them to fully participate in the life of our community. Robert Van Zetten Highton

Agenda behind gender With two more males killed over the weekend by female perpetrators, bringing to 40 the total of deaths this year by female perpetrators of domestic violence, it’s time to let go of the propaganda that domestic violence is purely a gendered issue. All this does is to create a divided approach to eradicating these disgraceful behaviours in society when we really need a united front in bringing about change. Domestic violence against anyone is a violation of human rights and should not be tolerated regardless of gender, race or religion.

One of the differences is that many males are empathetic to females experiencing domestic violence and want to help but some groups deny there are male victims of domestic violence. These groups want to nullify any thought that males can also be victims and want to keep the narrative going that domestic violence is a gendered issue. Why is this? Could it have anything to do with the amount of government funding they receive? Could it have anything to do with only wanting equality when it suits? There are many questions behind the motivation to keep this narrative going when clearly it is not a gendered issue. An holistic approach is needed to bring change to this issue and until people see the domestic violence is wrong regardless of gender, race or religion, it won’t be eradicated from our society. Philip Hunt Grovedale

Serve communities, not yourselves I’d like to comment on the Barwon Heads Association’s suggestion that City of Greater Geelong needs fewer but larger council wards. I agree with changing council boundaries, which appears will be based mainly on population numbers and that’s great. The association cites Barwon Heads’ and Ocean Grove’s strong relationship, referencing the bridge in particular. Both towns’ associations are riddled with self-serving members who fought tooth and nail to ensure the bridge was rebuilt in place rather than relocated so trade from passing vehicles was not interrupted. A blind man could see that flowing traffic through the town and past Barwon Heads Primary School wasn’t the smartest move. The bridge should have been placed in line with Geelong Road. Our association at Ocean Grove wasn’t any better. Shop owners wanted the traffic to come into Ocean Grove.

Both associations should look at the big picture and not make decisions based on self-serving members. Bob Thompson Ocean Grove

Temperature up, debate down Peter Rees (Letters, 4 December) thought the argument of my 27 November letter, which pointed out the historical strong correlation of the Earth’s temperature with atmospheric CO2, was shot to pieces because Earth’s temperature rises before CO2 when Earth transitions from an ice age to an interglacial warm period. He was wrong. As we make such a transition the Earth firstly moves slightly closer to the Sun and the temperature does indeed rise first but only about 1C. But the rise is sufficient to cause huge volumes of CO2 to migrate from oceans into the atmosphere and raise the Earth’s temperature another 5C or so. Understanding this science explains why our excessive CO2 emissions are so potentially dangerous and leads to the opposite conclusion Mr Rees tried to draw. He then claimed that the value of .04 per cent of CO2 was too small to cause significant warming. What an ill-informed value judgement. CO2 is a potent greenhouse gas. If none was in the atmosphere the Earth’s temperature would be around -20C, much too cold for life. Denying the science of greenhouse warming and its connection with CO2 is bizarre. This is solid science which has been well understood for about 150 years. I find it unsatisfactory that those who tell us that 97 per cent of climate scientists are wrong do not even understand what they are attempting to refute. When the ongoing climate debate within this newspaper reaches such low points, is it too much to hope for greater quality control within the editorial process? Dr Ray Black Belmont

FINALLY FRIDAY

Models of avant garde playing on By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN It was the kind of avant-garde bravery that has long since been lost to the music industry but the Models’ memory lives on strong in founding bassist Mark Ferrie. “There was a bond between us forged through an intense creative period,” Ferrie reflected to the Geelong Indy. “It still holds, it’s something that we’ve got that didn’t come easy and you don’t let it go.” Ferrie, along with Sean Kelly (guitar/lead vocals), Andrew Duffield (keyboard/vocals) and drummer Ashley Davies, will revisit the band’s 1980s drives down the Princes Highway to play the then-numeous live-rock pubs around Geelong. This time Models will play a new venue when the band arrives in the city for the final show of a national tour, playing central Geelong’s Wool Exchange on 30 January. Ferrie still reminisces about the band’s heyday at the top of the Australian charts. “It was a relatively short time compared to other things I’ve done but we did a real lot of stuff in those few years,” he said modestly. Emanating from the creative maelstrom of Melbourne’s post punk art-rock scene, Models released a succession of acclaimed albums culminating in number-one smash Out of Mind, Out of Sight. The band was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame in 2010. Ferrie himself was a member of two or three Models repertoires that were never recorded before breakthrough 1980 album Alphabravocharliedeltaechofoxtrotgolf.

“There were so many different phases of it but I’m feeling as though this one is the one that embraces the complete history of the band more than others,” Ferrie said. “There were different versions trying to get away from what happened but we feel as though we are pulling the whole story together.” Models went through many line-up changes but the revolving door of musos had more to do with the creative intent rather than typical band fallouts. “We were doing something that was out of the mainstream,” Ferrie recalled. “Recording engineers didn’t know what to make of it but we always were a popular band live. “The electronic component of it has always been more random and chaotic even though live drums and bass was always the pulse of the sound. “I hear what contemporary bands are doing and I can hear a direct relationship to what we were doing then.” The post-Models influence is so definitive that 30 years on many of today’s pop, rock and electronic outfits owe a debt of gratitude for paving the way. The tour will kick off this month with a couple of shows at which Models perform the albums Local and/or General and Pleasure of Your Company in their entirety. “Some of those songs have never been performed live,” Ferrie said. “It means we have a reservoir of songs we can draw from so we can decide what we would like to do tonight. “By the time we get to Geelong we’ll be peaking.”

INFLUENTIAL: Sean Kelly, Andrew Duffield and Mark Ferrie get set to re-live the ‘80s.

FINALLY FRIDAY

Diverse troupe’s poetry in motion BY ALANA MITCHELSON

POETRY IN ACTION: Doug Mann and Carmel Granage rehearse for the Geelong-produced recital of CJ Dennis poems.

A group of Geelong actors, secondary students and poetry enthusiasts will recite a selection of CJ Dennis poems to mark a centenary since the publication of his famous Songs of a Sentimental Bloke. Dennis was renowned for his interpretation of the Australian larrikin, portrayed through Ginger Mick, who sold rabbits to the poor and fought coppers with bricks. Other Dennis characters included irascible ‘original bloke’ Bill, Ben Bowyang, who despised politicians, and teller of tall stories Digger Smith.

Recital director and Geelong High School theatre teacher Doug Mann has recruited a diverse collection of 20 performers, ranging in age from 13 to 80 and with various levels of acting experience. Mann said he wanted a group of “very different people“ who would not ordinarily mix. “For a time in our history Dennis was the defining voice of the Australian character. “His humorous, knockabout, sentimental characters spoke to the very heart of what it was understood to be Australian,” Mann said. “Once upon a time you could find a copy of Songs of a Sentimental Bloke at one in every five Australian households.

“What always resonated with me was that, despite how rough his characters are on the exterior, they have hearts of gold. “When I listen to some of the poetry I can hear my father and my grandfather’s voices because some of the slang is captured so perfectly in Dennis’s works.” A couple of the student reciters have written music to perform the poems in song. The recital begins 7.30pm on Thursday at Shenton Theatre, corner of Ryrie and Garden streets, Geelong. Mann said more information was available by phoning him on 0414 650 277.

FARM BOYS: The MikMaks and special friends play the Croatian Club this month.

Kids’ funny farm BY ALANA MITCHELSON Children’s band The MikMaks have new farminspired songs to perform in Geelong next week with special friends Drums the Panda and Bruce the Hairy Crocodile. Brothers Brian, Joel, Alan and Dean McInnes grew up on a farm in Western Victoria where they sang carols together as children. In the summer of 2012 they were in a caravan at Port Fairy when they decided to write a song for their kids. Within six months they had 10 songs and had performed their first show, at Anglesea. Their new album, Working on the Farm, sends the McInnes brothers back to their roots with a focus on nature, country life and working the land, depicted with bright sets. The opening song features a MikMak express

train as the quartet makes its journey to the family farmhouse. Joel McInnes, adorned with his characteristic bright blue jacket, described the live shows as energetic, fun and colourful. “We drive the train to grandpa’s farm and perform the songs from our new album,” he said. “We have 12 kids between the four of us. “Our children really provide us inspiration for song ideas. “Our songs usually come from something they say or do, or even something they’re humming. “Even the questions they ask you, such as ‘what do belly buttons do?’” McInnes said the MikMaks’ target age group was kids aged one to eight but the show was entertaining for all ages. The MikMaks play Bell Park’s Croatian Club from 10am on 19 December.

Drug and alcohol abuse remains a serious problem in Victoria. Statistics from the Australian Drug Foundation revealed that there was an 88 per cent increase in ice related ambulance attendances in Melbourne during 2012-13 compared to the previous year. These incidents increased by a staggering 198 per cent in regional Victoria during the same period. Alcohol abuse is also on the rise with a 25 per cent increase in Melbourne and a 30 per cent increase in regional Victoria during 2012-13. These statistics suggest that there is need for more qualified people in the community services area to support people suffering from substance abuse and mental illnesses. AGB Training Community Services training consultant Denis O’Brien has more than 20 years’ experience working in the mental health and drug and alcohol field. He is a psychiatric nurse with qualifications in community health, advance psychiatric nursing and training and assessment as well as certificates in counselling and therapy. In terms of training in the field of community services, Denis noted that many of his students have previous first-hand experience of substance abuse and mental illness. “I have met people in these courses who have experienced drug and alcohol addictions first hand, whether the student has personally, or know a friend or family member who has. “Their experiences are really insightful and it helps to gain a further understanding of the journey they go through, he said. AGB Training Community Service student Alice is one of these students. “I chose this course because of my experiences. “Growing up my mum was an alcoholic and suffered from mental illnesses. “I then left home early and was involved in a

She is studying AGB Training’s Dual Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs/Mental Health, a course that Denis said was very important in bridging the gap between these two serious issues. “About 80 per cent of people who have an alcohol or drug addiction also suffer from some form of mental illness or vice versa so this course helps to recognise the link between substance abuse and mental health issues, he said. AGB Training offers a number of nationally recognised pathways in community services. It also offers community and corporate training, says operations manager Julie Christopher. “All our qualified trainers are experienced in crisis support and suicide intervention,” she said. “Whether you are looking for professional development for your organisation or want to attend a training session for your own learning, trainers Teagan, Helen and Julie are available. “Rates are available upon inquiry, there are discounts for not-for-profit organisations and proceeds go to supporting centre operations. “Lifeline’s vision is an Australia free of suicide. LOW-IMPACT collisions typical in shopping centre car parks are annoying to say the least. Add to this the fact that people rarely own up to damaging other people’s cars. It has been noticed that drivers are often scared to back-up any further due to very limited vision. These are the occasions where reverse sensors are very welcome. Bumper Master fits reversing sensors to help customers overcome fears of backing into objects or even pedestrians. Reversing sensors help prevent damage to owners’ cars as well as the vehicles of neighbours and other motorists. They can also help when backing out of tight garages and past narrow gateposts. Bumper Master can also help owners improve the appearance of bumpers when selling vehicles. Bumpers are the first part of any car to incur damage – and first impressions are important when trying to sell. All Bumper Master repairs come with a no-questions-asked warranty to give customers peace of mind. Best of all, most bumper repairs are done for less than the cost of insurance excesses. Located behind VicRoads at 3 Dowsett St, South Geelong, Bumper Master has proven experience in providing an alternative repair service to the bumper regions of any car. Owners wanting to improve the resale value of their cars should phone Bumper Master on 5221 0138.

Denis Williams at Geelong Brake and Clutch.

Easy, efficient and expert at parts, repairs for all vehicles Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including offroad and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.

09 KIA GRAND CARNIVAL All-new Fiat 500X looks like a regular Fiat 500 at the front, but takes the SUV route in other areas.

Popular Fiat 500 turns handy SUV By EWAN KENNEDY Fiat has expanded its popular 500 range with the introduction of a crossover SUV called the 500X. The ‘X’ sort of stands for crossover and joins the 500L, a model not imported to Australia at this stage, in providing added interior space and the handiness of back doors. It’s significantly larger than the standard Fiat 500 but carries a family resemblance to its baby brother at the front, in various details around the body, and in the nifty interior. Like the 500, the 500X is offered in a big variety of colours and there’s a huge range of accessories to permit personalisation. Would you believe 12 body colours, 15 dressup decals, nine choices of door mirror covers, five door-sill inserts, five alloy wheel designs, fabrics and leather can be part of the pack. And did we mention the key fob can be ordered in five different designs? Look out new Mini and Renault Captur, the Fiat 500X is out to challenge you in the customisation stakes. I love it - there are far too many cars in different shades of grey on our road these days. Olivier Francois, the global head of Fiat, paid Australia the honour of flying from Italy to talk us through the design and marketing of his all-new 500X. The marketing includes an overseas TV commercial that may be rather risque for Australia. Suffice to say a viagra-type pill manages to find its way into fuel tank of a standard Fiat 500 and causes it to expand into the 500X. The Fiat 500X was designed in conjunction with the recently launched Jeep Renegade. Fiat controls Chrysler and Jeep these days after the American giant got into financial strife in early days of the GFC. There’s a nice combination of Italian style and American all-wheel-drive knowhow in this partnership. Not that the 500X is aimed at tackling the Rubicon Trail, but its clever AWD system gives it added traction on slippery wet roads, or in icy conditions in the Snowy Mountains or Tasmania. Should you not need AWD the 500X also comes with 2WD, through the front wheels, at a lower cost. Which brings us to the price - Fiat 500X is not cheap. With a range starting at $28,000 for the 500X Pop with two-wheel-drive and a six-speed manual gearbox and rising to $39,000 for the allwheel-drive 500X Cross Plus with automatic transmission. As well as the Pop and Cross Plus, the 500X is sold as the Pop Star an rrp of $33,000 and the Lounge for $38,000. The 500X Pop can be specified with an automatic transmission for an added $2000. The auto is a six-speed dual-clutch unit, which is standard in the Pop Star (love that name!). The AWD models, the Lounge and Cross Plus, have a nine-speed automatic. On a positive note equipment levels are high.

Even the entry level Pop has 16-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch TFT instrument display, cruise control, paddle shifts on the automatic, Fiat’s Uconnect system with a 5.0-inch touchscreen, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and Bluetooth connectivity. Moving up to the Pop Star gets you 17-inch alloys, automatic headlights and wipers, three driving modes (Auto, Sport, and Traction plus), keyless entry and start and a reversing camera. The Uconnect system has a 6.5-inch touchscreen and GPS navigation. Fiat 500X Lounge also receives 18-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch colour TFT instrument cluster display, automatic-high-beam, a BeatsAudio Premium sound system with subwoofer and eight speakers, dual zone automatic air conditioning, interior ambient lighting and two-tone premium interior trim. Finally, the Cross Plus has a tougher looking front end design with steeper ramp angles, uses xenon projector headlights, roof racks, satin chrome exterior details and a different finish on the dashboard, Power is provided by a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol in 500X all models. It comes in two states of tune, with 103 kW and 230 Nm in the front-drive models and 125 kW and 250 Nm in the all-wheeldrives. Safety levels are high and the 500X has more than 60 standard or available items that include a reversing camera, forward collision warning; LaneSense Warning; lane departure warning; blindspot monitoring and rear cross path detection. The ESC system has integrated electronic roll mitigation Seven air bags are installed in all models We were only able to sample front-drive automatic Fiat 500Xs in a relatively brief drive program organised by Fiat as part of the Australian national media launch. Performance is generally good, but the doubleclutch transmission took it’s time in getting into the correct gear on some occasions. Perhaps it would have adapted to our driving style with longer use. Ride comfort is very good and it’s obvious a lot of work has gone into noise and vibration suppression. Indeed, the Fiat 500X is as quiet, or quieter as many SUVs from the next class up. Interior space is good and four adults can be carried with decent room to move. A family with three pre-teen children will find this cute crossover Fiat should meet their needs beautifully. Handling isn’t exactly Italian sporty, but the 500X is neutral in the way it feels until you’re well above the cornering speeds likely to be attempted by the average owner. Outward visibility is very good thanks to the relatively upright greenhouse. The new Fiat 500X offers Italian style, the ability to be personalised in thousands of different ways - yet is practical as well. What more could you ask from this expanded Fiat Cinquecento?

SPORT Flatties and pike in shelter of bay ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Corio Bay was a popular destination over the last week for anglers who were seeking shelter from strong winds. Casting soft plastics around structures such as moored boats produced strong numbers of flathead to 50cm, with the odd pinkie snapper also finding its way into anglers’ bags. The entrance to the grammar school lagoon fished well for pike, with anglers casting turtleback worm soft plastics boating fish of almost 1m. Drifting for squid over the shallow grass beds off Clifton Springs was worthwhile, with bag-limit captures possible for anglers who put in enough time. Whiting were also caught off Clifton Springs. The most-productive location was straight out from the Dell in 6m to 8m. Further around to St Leonards, Sam Pitman anchored Sunday morning close to the structure known as the White Lady and set a spread of rods. Sam missed a few decent runs but his rod soon buckled over again, this time ending with the successful boating of a 1.3m gummy shark. Queenscliff Harbour provided anglers line-burning action on silver trevally. The change of tide allowed anglers to cast soft plastics in the main cut without too much interference from the tide so they could reach schools of trevally holding deep. Once the tidal flow increased, plastics worked under moored boats continued to land trevally to 40cm. The Barwon River estuary continued giving up mulloway to 90cm for anglers who put in the effort. Fishing into the night in the lower sections produced the larger models, with fresh squid or even pilchard getting results. Higher up in estuary system, anglers took better numbers but the size was on average less. Bream also began to show in the lower reaches, especially between the Sheepwash and Ocean Grove boat ramp. Freshwater anglers fared better than the saltwater counterparts over the week. Michael Evans fished the numerous lakes and water impoundments around Ballarat. Casting Strike Pro Bob n Spoons, Michael banked a brown trout of 50cm that fought hard in shallow water. Late afternoon produced the most fish for Michael. John and Robyn Cranston travelled up to Lake Eucumbene where they encountered brown trout to 2.3kg over five days of fishing. John said allowing mudeyes to sink slowly under the weight of a small spiltshot among the submerged timber was by far the best approach. Anglers seeking to wet a line over the next week should focus on St Leonards for a variety of species including whiting, snapper, gummy shark and squid. Freshwater anglers should be persistent with Wurdee Boluc Reservoir for beastly redfin and brown trout.

Low blow to finals dream as Cats play powerhouse LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club’s season hit a new low on the weekend’s T20 double header with the side snatching defeat from the jaws of victory on Saturday before almost redeeming itself on Sunday only to blow it yet again. At Dandenong on Saturday, the Cats looked set for victory when they reached 0/42 in pursuit of their target of 93. Not even their harshest critics would have predicted a loss from there but, alas, they somehow managed to bat their overs out without passing their host’s score to finish on 5/87, a truly astonishing result. And again on Sunday, attempting to run down Frankston Peninsula’s 3/152, the top order set things up nicely to be 2/85 at the half way point before the inevitable collapse saw it dismissed for 119 with two overs to spare. While finals are now off the agenda, coach

Andre Borovec will be looking to see who wants to step up, show a bit of ticker and take the bull by the horns against perennial powerhouse Melbourne at the famous Albert Ground over the next two Saturdays. In the Geelong Cricket Association, South Barwon flexed its muscle last week in its game against Geelong West, having already secured first innings points. Import Dhanuja Nandana (3/27) was the pick of the Swans’ bowlers, although his side didn’t have it all its own way early on as the Rams began steadily, getting to 2/60 before the wheels fell off. A middle order collapse saw West all out for just 126, veteran Brad Hauenstein (3/23) cashing in late. In reply, opener Kyle Bienefeldt (77) took it upon himself to ensure his side moved past its target before stumps, the Swans finishing on 3/136. They will press for outright points tomorrow and if they can achieve it they will open up a very nice gap at the top of the table.

In division two, the clash of the cellar dwellers Waurn Ponds and Alexander Thomson looks to be in the Vikings’ favour after they plundered 9/290. While Waurn Ponds bowlers toiled manfully, skipper Brendan Forssman (96) and in-form lower order bat Tom Stewart (91) played shots to all parts in a fine display of batting. Stewart will be keen to get the new ball in his hand tomorrow and get a few early wickets to make sure his side has a morale boosting win. And in division three, Shelford looked like good things half way through day one, dismissing Corio for just 105 on the back of veteran Michael Lymer’s 4/28. And at 1/45 in reply, it was the Bullants game for the taking before an amazing spell of bowling by Brett Nolan (5/27) saw Shelford crash to 90 all out. It’s anyone’s guess how this game will pan out tomorrow, but both sides will be keen to get on the front foot to ensure a favourable outcome.
