The Breakfast Clubs program is part of a State Government initiative to make the education system in Victoria the best in the country. “We’re investing almost $4 billion to make Victoria the Education State, so every community has access to great local schools and every child gets the chance to succeed,” Mr Merlino said.

The survey found that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day with hungry students finding it difficult to concentrate and becoming lethargic. Over half of the children sent to school without breakfast experienced learning difficulties or exhibited behavioural problems, the research also discovered. According to research carried out by Foodbank, 67 per cent of teachers in Australia are seeing children come to school hungry, with more than 26 per cent of those teachers reporting the problem is getting worse. The research also found that students at government schools are three times more likely to be sent to school

VICTORIAN Education Minister James Merlino announced last week the most disadvantaged schools in Victoria will provide a free breakfast for students next year. The $13.7 million Breakfast Clubs program will see 500 schools across the state provide a healthy start to the day, reaching about 25,000 children. Sherbrooke community school is one of the schools participating in the program next year to ensure all their students have access to a healthy
breakfast to start their day. Mr Merlino said the program would help to eliminate education gaps between children from disadvantaged background and those from more privileged households. “The Breakfast Clubs program is another way in which the State Government is tackling disadvantage in Monbulk so that all children can reach their potential, regardless of their circumstances,” he said. A total of 174 schools will join the Breakfast Clubs program at the start of the 2016 school year, with another 75

Club makes a real stand By PETER DOUGLAS THE Yarra Ranges Athletics Club is poised to promote greater local participation in sport at junior and senior level. The club’s base at Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn, is set to benefit from the construction of a new shaded spectator stand, which will become a reality after Yarra Ranges Council committed $330,000 to the project. Despite much infrastructure work over the past few years, Morrison Reserve has been under-used due to a lack of all-weather stadium facilities. But the construction of a spectator stand will help meet requirements of local school groups and other sports groups, which require large shaded areas to conduct events. Yarra Ranges Athletics committee member, Brendan Dixon, has been driving the stand project for the past five years and was elated at council’s commitment, which will make up for a shortfall in funds. “We have planted trees here but they need time to grow, there is no shade cover and that was stopping schools from using the area,” he said. “We’re hoping the stand will cater for between 150 to 200 people. “The club is starting to host some really big competitions, including AV Shield for senior athletes, we may even one day attract Olympians. “The senior club is building up and we now have around 70 members.” Yarra Ranges Shire has allocated the funds through its 2015-’16 Capital Expenditure Program - Future Community Projects Fund. Mr Dixon said the project was due to begin after Christmas, with the designs already in place; though, the project will again go to tender.
He said the elevated concrete stand would feature a step design and corrugated roof. Mr Dixon believes it is the start of much growth for the athletics club, which is considering hosting twilight competitions. Fellow club member, Jamie Strudley, said the shaded stand was important to the community, because school sports provided pathways for greater participation. “We need to get as many children involved in sport as possible,” he said. Yarra Ranges Council unanimously passed the commitment at its Tuesday, 8 December, meeting, supporting a project they believed would be of great benefit. Cr Maria McCarthy strongly encouraged council to support the bid. “This additional funding is required because the application to build new seating and to accommodate requirements was more than the budget required,” Cr McCarthy said. “Our support will allow this facility to become upgraded and support a facility in attracting national events.” Cr Noel Cox said Morison Reserve had the capacity to become a major athletics hub in the shire. “This needs to be built to improve its use, it’s a really good project,” Cr Cox said. Yarra Ranges Athletics was established in 2010 and provides athletes from across the region opportunities in a club environment. The club has already helped complete various upgraded athletics facility at Morrison Reserve. Yarra Ranges Athletics hosts regular competitions, including track and field, and cross country, and also provides training for all level of athletes.

In brief Give the booze a break POLICE in the Dandenong Ranges are warning drivers this festive season to be careful with their alcohol consumption after a number of road incidents involving drunk drivers. “Just don’t drink and drive,” Sergeant Andrew Herdman of Olinda police said. “Be mindful of not drinking and driving and be mindful of your alcohol consumption.” “Police don’t want to report dead family members over the Christmas period,” he said.
Police probe car flip A FEMALE driver was taken to hospital after she flipped and rolled her car on Ridge Road in Mount Dandenong on the night of Friday 11 December. The 26-year-old lost control of her car and rolled the vehicle onto its roof before being taken by ambulance to hospital with minor injuries. Olinda police are investigating the cause of the accident with possibility of alcohol being a contributing factor.
Fatigue suspected in accident ANOTHER young female driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries after losing control of her vehicle on the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road on Sunday 13 December at about 1am. The 21-year-old driver was travelling north near the thousand steps when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into an embankment. Police are investigating fatigue as a factor and urge drivers to be careful when driving late at night.
his vehicle. The driver was flown to The Alfred hospital with numerous injuries. Belgrave police are investigating the cause of the crash and whether alcohol or speed were contributing factors.
Street robbed twice in a day POLICE are asking for witnesses to come forward after two burglaries just hours apart in an Upwey Street last week. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that between 7.30am and 11.30am on Tuesday 8 December, thieves entered a house in Ternes Road, Upwey, through the front door. After searching the house, the thieves made off with tools from a shed on the property, along with two laptops, with a total value of about $2500. Later that day, between 12.30pm and 4.30pm, a different house on the same street was robbed, with thieves breaking into a garage and stealing a Giant mountain bike, valued at about $3000. Det Sgt Barrow said the bike was black and silver, and a backpack with bike-related items was also stolen. “This (bike) was a pretty quality one,” he said. Anyone who may have any information about either burglary is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Rare antiques stolen
OLINDA police have arrested and charged three 16 to 17-year-old youths with graffiti offences on 27 December. The Mount Dandenong shops had been damaged by graffiti and police worked with businesses to catch the offenders using security footage from the shops. The youths were identified and charged with criminal damage.
FAMILY heirlooms and antiques dating back 150 years have been stolen from a deceased estate in Montrose, with police searching for information. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that between 3pm on Wednesday, 2 December and 3pm on Sunday, 6 December, unknown persons entered a property n Aileen Avenue, Montrose. Det Sgt Barrow said the thieves entered via the back door and stole a number of rare items, including a set of encyclopaedias from 1859, mantle clocks, a dinner set and a diamond ring. “It’s all antique stuff that belonged to a relative and had a lot of sentimental value,” Det Sgt Barrow said. “It’s a bit difficult to put a price on it, and I wouldn’t even hazard a guess at what an 1859 set of encyclopaedias was worth.” He said the items would stand out if the thieves tried to sell them, and asked anyone who may have any information, or has heard of people trying to sell similar items, to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 - or to file a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Wallet stolen after heart attack
Attempted robbery: two charged
A MAN receiving medical treatment for a heart attack in Belgrave had his wallet taken and money stolen from his bank account. The 53-year-old Belgrave man was receiving medical attention in the public toilets on the Main Street of Belgrave when he had his wallet stolen by an unknown person about 8.30pm on 7 December. The offender then stole $40 from the man’s bank account and police are asking anyone with information to contact the Monbulk police station on 9756 6266.
TWO men are set to face court after an attempted armed robbery in Mooroolbark, where the thief fled after being hit by the shop owner. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that at 9.50am on Monday 7 December, a man went into a milk bar on Cambridge Road, Mooroolbark, with a knife, and demanded money from the shop owner. However, after being “struck” by the owner, the man ran out of the shop. Det Sgt Barrow said a 22-year-old man of no fixed place of abode was charged with attempted armed robbery and remanded in custody, to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 9 March. A 21-year-old Croydon man was charged with driving and firearms-related offences, and was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 17 May.

By PETER DOUGLAS THE Pride Cup initiative has continued to win widespread acclaim, this time through taking out a prestigious 2015 VicHealth Award. The awards acknowledge programs designed to promote health and well-being in Victoria. Minister for Health, Jill Hennessy, helped present the ‘Building Health through Sport’ award at the National Gallery of Victoria on Tuesday, 1 December. The Pride Cup was created by Yarra Glen Football Netball Club coach Dean de Munk and assistant coach Sam Hills to support Yarra Glen footballer, Jason Ball, who came out as a gay footballer in 2012. The initiative has since been promoted throughout Victoria and the concept is set to be staged at AFL level next season, with a match between St Kilda and Sydney. Jason Ball, his father, David, and Yarra Ranges Shire representatives attended the ceremony to accept the award. David Ball said they were

Striking out for the sea
Wood in the weeds By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS FEDERAL Member for Latrobe Jason Wood visited the site of weed and invasive plant reduction works in the Dandenong Ranges on Friday 12 December. The project is being managed by Friends of Sassafras Creek (FOSC) working with Parks Victoria and local residents to remove 30 cypress trees and several large sycamore maples from the Sassafras Creek Nature Reserve in Olinda. The old and dying trees are not only introduced species but pose a serious fire hazard due to their dry timber. The funding for this project was made possible by the Dandenong Ranges Environmental and Bushfire Reduction Community Grants first announced by Jason Wood in June this year. The aim of the grants is to encourage community groups to work together and in partnership with government agencies to reduce bushfire risk and revegetate the Dandenong Ranges with native plants.
The funding for the Community Grants Scheme includes $4.5 million in funding from the Federal Government that is managed by the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority (PPWCMA). Stephen Thuan of PPWCMA said these kinds of projects were so important for the conservation and preservation of our native environment. “It’s great to see these projects coming together,” he said. “It’s an important project to remove these major weeds and fire hazards and it will have a lasting impact on our environment.” Jane Hollands of FOSC said without the grant money this project would not have been possible. “This wouldn’t have happened without this money,” she said. “Everybody is relieved this project got off the ground and everyone, including local residents, is relieved these weeds are going.” The removal of weeds and replanting of native vegetation at the Sassafras Creek Nature Reserve has an expected finish date of June 2016.

list,” Cr Child said. “To the general public, they’re safe places. “If you enacted your fire plan, you may never need these places, but they’re there if need be.” Meanwhile, Cr Clarke said regular auditing was a good practice, as was adding to the list of NSPs. The Annual Audit follows the Bushfire Royal Commission, which recom-
mended legislation that requires the CFA to certify NSPs against the CFA’s Fire Rating Criteria. For the sites to be included in the list, strict criteria had to be met, which included passing rating criteria as well as access requirements. Council is to provide signage at these sites. NSPs are not intended to replace a personal bushfire plan.

YARRA Ranges Shire will include an additional three Neighbourhood Safe Places (NSPs) during the present 2015'16 fire danger period. In addition to the 17 existing NSPs within the shire, further sites have been approved for the Seville Recreation Reserve (Northern Oval), Alexanders Car Park at Belgrave, and Gruyere Recreation Reserve.
From April to October, numerous potential sites were identified for assessment, with Yarra Ranges Council approving the three sites unanimously at its 8 December meeting. Cr Jim Child said the NSPs deserved council support. “This adds to the already valuable number of NSPs within the municipality and I think they’re three valuable recommendations and sites added to the
THE MAIL newspaper received a letter last week from some very concerned students at Macclesfield Primary School. Piper C and Joel CR wrote to us about the significant problem of plastic pollution in our oceans. The Grade 3-4 students are very passionate about this problem and wish for other people in the community to be made aware of the issue. According to Ocean Crusaders, there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean at this point in our history and 100,000 marine creatures die from plastic entanglement each year. Information from the Federal Department of Environment indicates that at least 77 species of marine wildlife found in Australian waters have been impacted by entanglement in, or ingestion of, plastic debris during the last three and a half decades (1974-2008). Australians use an average of 6.9 billion plastic bags a year; 3.6 billion are plastic shopping bags. The students of Macclesfield Primary School would like everyone in the community to be aware of this issue and be careful and thoughtful of the way we all dispose of our plastics. The Mail would like to thank Joel and Piper for their great letter and wish them the best in their future school projects and all their future causes. Kind regards, The Mail Newspaper

Letters Christmas is a real slaughter HOW many children are dying for Christmas? Tragically, countless numbers of individuals are, quite literally, dying for Christmas. In our slaughterhouse, the Christmas massacre of pigs and turkeys has already begun. I have just watched online harrowing undercover footage taken in three Victorian slaughterhouses. Pigs inside carbon dioxide gas chambers can be seen thrashing, screaming and gasping for air as they slowly suffocate and their lungs, throats and eyes burn from the carbon dioxide. Some were filmed being electrically stunned in the anus and kicked and tortured. And don’t think that turkeys are treated any more kindly. Undercover footage from Australian turkey slaughterhouses has shown birds being beaten, slammed against walls and stomped on. Welcome to the cruel reality of your Christmas roast! Jenny Moxham, Monbulk.
Just too much traffic THE saga regarding the closure of the northern end of Nobelius Street in Emerald drags on and the Shire of Yarra Ranges has provided statistics, which, to my mind, lend support to the wishes of the five residents living north of Stewart Road, wanting this
portion of the street closed to through-traffic. The shire conducted a traffic survey where the traffic counter was placed south of the driveways of three residents, thus excluding their road usage from these statistics. The count showed that in 24 hours, 106 vehicles used this section of Nobelius Street at an average speed of 34.8km/h. This in a street that is 3.2m wide, open to two-way traffic, no kerbing, no footpaths, unsealed and on which it is required that traffic travels in the centre of the street, owing to the depth of the guttering. The figures went on to show that the 85th percentile speed by drivers was 43.3kmh; that is, that 85 per cent of the traffic traversing the street did so at or under that speed, and, again, I reiterate, in a two-way street only 3.2m wide, gutter to gutter. They then went on to say the speed limit is 50km/h. These statistics do not record the number of pedestrians, joggers, schoolchildren and horse riders using this street and indicate that this street is primarily used as a shortcut by non-residents. Surely these statistics support either the necessity of closing this street to through-traffic or at least limiting the usage to one-way and placing a much lower speed limit on this section of Nobelius Street. When will commonsense prevail? Michael Day, Emerald.

FOOT & Leg Pain Clinics, one of Australia’s leading musculoskeletal & sports podiatry practices are experts in assisting people with foot and leg pain, injury and degenerative concerns. There services are highly sought-after due to the successful outcomes they assist patients to achieve. In fact they’ve been the chosen podiatrists of some of the Worlds Best Athletes and have assisted many others to avoid surgery. “So many people put up with foot and leg pain because they think nothing can be done for them or because they have been told their only options are medications or surgery,” says Dr. Tim Kirwan musculoskeletal podiatrist from the Wantirna and Box Hill clinics. “However, this is often not the case as most pain, injury and many degenerative concerns can be addressed relatively easily with correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment.” Dr Kirwan said Foot & Leg pain Clinics patients range from professional athletes to children and seniors suffering from sore feet, knees and legs, as well as injuries and conditions such as: heel pain and plantar fasciitis, shin pain, knee concerns, Achilles tendonitis, bunions, adolescent growing pains and degenerative issues like arthritis.

Weed bonds over 25 years THE Chandlers Hill Parkcare Group is this year celebrating 25 years of weed whacking in the Dandenong Ranges National Park. The hard-working volunteers have established an almost weed-free 1km strip of parkland, stretching from The Bain to Ferntree Gully. In the past three years, the group has removed an estimated 40,000 weeds including blackberry, ivy, forget-me-not, watsonia and angled onion. The team meets every Monday and comprises Ray Cowling, Swee Oon, Lynne Jones, Adrian Batt, Erica Peters and John Exon.
To celebrate this milestone, Parks Victoria is putting on a lunch for the past and present group members on Monday 14 December. The group was started by the late Gordon Carter and the late Bruce Thomson, two retired Boronia residents. These two often walked the Chandlers Hill section of what was then the Ferntree Gully National Park, and were concerned about the unchecked weed growth. They contacted Parks Victoria, offering to help remove weeds. Thus, the group was formed.
With some guidance from Parks Victoria, the group has been removing weeds now for 25 years. Member Erica Peters said the group shared a special bond. “Our group is united by the enjoyment of working together in a natural environment and a shared concern about weeds smothering indigenous plants and disappearing habitat for local birds and wildlife,” she said. The group is always looking for new volunteers. Interested people can contact Parks Victoria on 13 19 63. Alternatively, email chandlershill@gmail.com.

Kate heads for the hills By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS SUPERSTAR of the Australian and international music scene, Kate MillerHeidke is coming to the Dandenong Ranges in 2016 and the Mail have two double passes to give away. Playing at Montrose Town Centre and Burrinja Cultural Centre, Kate will be bringing her unique brand of alt-pop to the hills. It’s been nearly a decade since she played in the Dandenongs and she says she is very excited to be back. “It’s gorgeous in the Dandenongs and I have fantasised about moving out there,” she said. “I’ve got a few shows in a row so I’m also taking suggestions about good cafes.” Having split from her music label, Ms Miller-Heidke said the last few years had really allowed her to explore her music more. “I think the last few years have been defined by expansion,” she said. “It’s partly to do with being independent and being in control of my own destiny and saying yes to a project because of a challenge or interest.” Ms Miller-Heidke said she was looking forward to playing to intimate crowds and showcasing some new material. “It’s going to be a mix of the songs from my most recent album and some brand-new stuff that’s never been heard before,” she said. “Part of the reason I want to sing some new songs is to see how they go on the road and then get back into the studio - it’s great way to break new songs in.” Ms Miller-Heidke said playing smaller venues such as Burrinja and Montrose allowed her to really connect with her audience. “These are the kinds of gigs where magic can happen,” she said. “That level of intimacy with an audience feels like a real conversation.” Kate Miller-Heidke will be appearing at Montrose Town Centre on 9 and 10 March 2016 and at Burrinja on 11 March 2016. The Mail has a double pass for the Burrinja Performance and each of the Montrose Performances to give away. For your chance to win, head to our Facebook at www.facebook.com/MailNewsGroup and follow the prompts.
By SETH HYNES THIS year has been another banner for foreign and independent productions and a good if middling year for mainstream blockbusters, albeit with some surprise stand-outs. Here are my picks for the 10 best films of 2015. 10. Wild Tales - A collection of diverse Spanish-Argentinian short films linked by the theme of vengeance, this is a must-see for anyone who loves socially-conscious, pitch-black dark comedy. 9. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night - As sombre and emotionally authentic as it is weird and violent, this Iranian supernatural drama ingeniously frames vampirism, which is generally a very masculine monster trope, as a form of female empowerment. It might also be the best David Lynch movie that Lynch didn’t actually make. 8. Mad Max: Fury Road - A modernday marvel of insane stunts and brutally beautiful violence, George Miller’s latest post-apocalyptic thrill-ride also has intriguing characters, including a bad-ass heroine, and outstanding pacing. 7. The Martian - Suspenseful, funny and uplifting all at once, The Martian is Ridley Scott’s and Matt Damon’s best film in a long time and a new high-point for science fiction realism. 6. Sicario - Like The Double last year, Sicario grips you from start to finish with its vivid, unrelentingly bleak atmosphere along with career-best performances from Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro.
Kate Miller-Heidke is performing in The Hills this coming March. 148471

Ash brings it to Belgrave By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS
Ash Grunwald. 148478
The 10 best films of 2015
Picture: CONTRIBUTED
THE king of charismatic bluesy goodness, Ash Grunwald is coming to Belgrave in early 2016. Always a favourite with the crowd, Ash will rock the Sooki Lounge to its very core with tracks from his newest album “Now,” produced by Nick Didia. Ash Grunwald has been a fixture of the Australian music scene for more than 12 years with a bunch of ARIA nominations and wins and a few APRA awards. An innovative and alluring performer, Ash Grunwald is sure to get your weekend started in just the right away with this intimate set at one of Melbourne’s favourite music venues. As part of the Ash Grunwald Summer Series, the stage at Sooki Lounge will come alive for this unique and much-loved performer on 21 January 2016. Tickets can be booked online at www.sookilounge.oztix.com.au or by contacting Sooki Lounge on 9754 7567.
5. Kumiko The Treasure Hunter - A strangely charming portrait of obsession, this slow but mesmerising film stars Rinko Kikuchi as a withdrawn young woman who is desperate to escape her unfulfilling life, and so explores snowy Minnesota in search of a buried treasure she saw in an old Coen Brothers movie. 4. Inside Out - Dazzlingly vibrant and endearing, Pixar’s latest film is entertaining surrealism for kids and has the welcome message of sadness being an important emotion in life. 3. Macbeth - A triumph of filmmaking and adaptation, Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth has stunning art direction, riveting performances from Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, and some clever little reinterpretations of Shakespeare’s text. 2. It Follows - A low-key but phenomenally tense horror film with the aroma of fine early John Carpenter, It Follows is also a brilliant subversion of old slasher movie cliches. 1. Ex Machina - An entrancing, elegant character study that keeps you constantly guessing about the motives of its characters, Ex Machina astutely engages with themes of artificial intelligence and how we engage with technology and how technology may engage with us right back. Without hyperbole, the best science fiction film of the current decade.

Visit Healesville Walk … you’ll be wrapped LOCAL clubs, groups and organisations in rural areas build connections and enhance the social fabric of the community. Healesville Walk supports and encourages local community initiatives and, as such, will launch The Great Christmas Gift Wrap on Saturday, 19 December, from 10am, supporting the Badger Creek and District Men’s Shed. Shoppers can make a donation to have their gifts wrapped by volunteer ‘shedders’ and helpers from this worthy group. The Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) is the peak body representing more than 930 Men’s Sheds and is recognised as one of Australia’s largest male-based community
development organisations. AMSA recognises as a Men’s Shed any communitybased, non-profit, non-commercial organisation that is accessible to all men and whose primary activity is the provision of a safe and friendly environment where men are able to work on meaningful projects. Peter Broman from Badger Creek and District Men’s Shed said the local group had a rich history. “It has its origins at the Living and Learning Centre in Healesville, but is a new shed for Badger Creek and district,” he said. “We have 20 members and are currently setting up wood-
work and metalwork areas, and hope for automotive in the future. “We operate behind the Badger Creek Fire Brigade and work in partnership with the brigade. “We also work in the local community and are part of the network of Men’s Sheds across Australia.” With free tastings throughout the day and goodies to give away, be sure to bring your gifts or buy one. Come on in and visit Healesville Walk ... you’ll be wrapped. Healesville Walk Shopping Centre is located at 251 Maroondah Highway, Healesville.

Dynamic trio of success By DENNIS FULLER LAST Saturday at Emerald Golf Club, teams of three competed in the Fisher Stableford event. This was not a known competition but, as John Fisher had donated the lamb for the spit, it only seems proper to thus name it. A goodly bunch of not necessarily goodly golfers turned up to try their hands in this event. The team score was the best two of the three rounds and the third player’s score was cast to the four winds. This was not done by this person because they probably would have missed. Ken Hill 40, Peter Clowes 39 and to a much lesser extent Leigh Morison’s 32 gave them
the winning score of 79. In second place on the ‘chuck the cards at the wall and see what comes up countback system’ was Peter Glasscock 36, Ross Martin 40 and Steve Town 30. Losers on the countback were Broc Reynolds 39, Geoff Whittaker 37 and Brian McCoy 35. Using the same countback method it transpired that Ben Balfour 34, Graeme Fergus 37 and Graham White beat Ian Cranston 32, Sepp Krummenacher 39 and Dave Mackey when they both scored 71. Balfour was nearest the pin on the 4th, Hill the 7th, White the 12th, Clowes the 13th and Balfour scooped the pool on the pro pin 18th. After all the cards came in for the ladies’ comp it was
found that the winners were Michelle Petrie, Nellie Whiteside and Garbie Ross by a handsome margin. Wednesday’s Opulently Fashioned Gold (OFG) was a round of stableford. Conditions suited all as the scores were extravagant in the extreme. Ben Balfour (24) won with 46 points with John Piggott (23) next on 43. Geoff Whittaker (23) was next with 41, followed by Mick Petrie (35) on 40, Graham White (18) had 39, one ahead of Dennis Fuller (11) who managed 38. Next Saturday, in an attempt to reclaim normality of sorts, it has been decided that par is the meal of the day. I predict much heartburn.

Volleyball squad wins Under 14 national championship LAST week the Monbulk College Year 7 Boys volleyball team won the Under 14s division of the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup to become
national champions. This topped off an amazing year for this team who also won the Victorian Schools Cup and the State Championship. Last
week they did not lose a set for the entire week and beat Craigslea (from Queensland) in the semi-final and then Eltham in the gold medal match.

Pictured are the junior cricketers who enjoyed a special clinic from Twenty20 cricket team, Melbourne Stars.
Monbulk juniors Star-struck in big cricket week By STEVE UTTING A WIN to the Monbulk 1st XI, two centuries in the seniors and a successful Melbourne Stars clinic for our juniors highlighted another big week of cricket at Monbulk. The 1s restricted Mountain Gate to 210 with Chris Martin (4 wickets) and Dave McKay (3 wickets) doing the damage. A 100* to Daniel Clark and 59 to 13-year-old Tom Taylor in the 3rds was
not enough for them to win. Rab Noonan and Michael Hill (also both juniors) both got three wickets in the 4ths' win. Michael also got 5/20 in the U16s to top off a great day for him. On Wednesday night, the club hosted a Melbourne Stars clinic for all of the junior teams. Thanks to all of the junior coaches and other helpers for making it a successful night.
This year all juniors received Melbourne Stars memberships as part of their registration and the club is going to the Melbourne Stars v Brisbane Heat on 14 January, so save the date. Next weekend, all teams play a onedayer before the Christmas break. On Saturday night, the Monbulk Cricket Club is having its Christmas party for the whole club - seniors, juniors and Milo. See website for more details.

Relay to gold for athletes
Panthers fall short

YARRA Ranges Athletics held the latest round of Little Athletics on Friday night. The night was memorable for the many oneon-one contests throughout the evening and the intermittent storms that rolled through the Mount Evelyn venue. It was great to see the fantastic number of athletes and parents attending with smiles on their faces and intent in their performance. There were still many PBs, regardless of the unfavourable weather. Great to see the 12-plus age group parents there to help with setup, we look forward to seeing our 10 and 11 years age group parents this Friday for their turn. Saturday was the State Relay Championships at Lakeside Stadium. Yarra Ranges Athletics had seven teams qualify for the State Championships. Congratulations to the 9-11 Girls Medley and 12-13 Girls Medley teams for their convincing wins and the Under 14s Mixed 4x100 team narrowly missing third place by 13 hundredths of a second. Congratulations also to other club athletes who represented Yarra Ranges Athletics superbly at the State Championships. The Under 10s mixed team finished 18th in the 4x100m relay and 8th in the 4x200m relay. The Under 11s mixed 4x100m team finished 13th and the Under 9s mixed 4x200m team finished 7th. Next week is the ‘Special Festive’ round of Little Athletics competition on Friday Evening from 6pm. Under 10s and Under 11s age group parents are on set-up. Please be there from 5pm to help get the venue ready for competition. The seniors were back in action last Thursday night with Round 6 of the AV Shield. The next round is at the Nunawading venue next Saturday, 19 December, from 1.30pm. If you are interested in seeing what the AV Shield competition is like, please feel free to come along and join in. You don’t have to be registered to compete. For information on how to join or trial, photos, results and updated news, visit yarrarangesathletics.org.au or check out the club’s Facebook page.
EILDON Park was denied an outright result against Upwey Tecoma when stumps were called to complete Round 6 of the Norm Reeves Shield. At the conclusion of day one, the Panthers were 18 runs ahead with seven wickets in the bank and were looking for a sporting declaration. Keeper-batsman Nathan Hicks forced the pace, reaching a half century before skipper Cameron Cosstick sent the Tigers in to bat a second time, just 58 runs in arrears. Adrian Baltruschaitis went through the Upwey line-up for just 102, in doing so claiming 6/24 and setting his side 45 runs from 5 overs for maximum points. However, after some wild hitting, they ended 5/29, and 16 runs short. Upwey medium-pacer Ben Wood collected 4/64 and 4/15, averting the outright in the second dig. Knoxfield continues on their merry way after accounting for big improvers the Belgrave Magpies by 104 runs. After Friday’s rain took the edge off most ovals, the Magpies were never really a threat chasing 288. Recently selected Victorian Country off-spinner Zac Wilson bagged 5/65. At Windermere Reserve, Monbulk 235 held Mountain Gate to 210 after the Gators resumed play at 1/31. Clint Buckland (81) and Marshall Bunting (69) ran out of partners as Chris Martin with 4/48 and David McKay (3/29) helped clinch the win for the Hawks. The Basin scored a much-needed victory by 34 runs over Knox Gardens as they defended 232. Jake Best’s century the previous week was the difference in the game but Falcon’s allrounder Scott McInerney could hold his head high with 63 to add to his 4/44. In the final game, Johnson Park resumed at 3/84 in pursuit of top side Ferntree Gully’s 121. The Blues were made to pay for their poor batting as they chased leather all day with the Sharks compiling 8/351. David Devenish scored an unbeaten century while older brother Andrew notched 72.
