Merry Christmas AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR
Bright Christmas
Christmas is in the air at Lupin Court, Cranbourne North.
By GEORGIA WESTGARTH HE’S known as the ‘Lights Police’ of Lupin Court - and he’s got one hell of an army! Graham Conder has lived in his home in Cranbourne North for 21 years and for the past 20 years he’s been lighting it up with the help of his friendly neighbours. “As soon as someone moves into the court they get a knock on the door from me and I tell them ... I demand that they do Christmas lights,” Graham said, laughing. It’s a festive Lupin Court tradition that has become known far and wide and it’s not stopping any time soon.
“We start planning in November and on 1 December we turn them on,” he said. “A few Father’s Days ago my sons bought me a new shed to put my lights in because I was running out of room.” “My biggest plan is to make sure my neighbours get bigger and better and encouraging them to keep splurging on lights and decorations.” But its Graham’s love for his “tight knit” court that keeps him coming back for more each Christmas. “We get a great response from everyone, some people visit twice a week in the lead up to Christmas and we’re always out and about too, happy to have a chat with passers-by,” he said.
“Every year on Christmas Eve the court gets together on my lawn and we have fish and chips or a barbecue, we are all friends it’s a great atmosphere.” This year Graham convinced 13 out of the 14 households in Lupin Court to join in on the fun and he couldn’t be happier. “We share the lights between us and sit out and enjoy the show ourselves and talk to the visitors of a night,” he said. “One year my neighbour who had just moved in said he’d love to participate but couldn’t afford it, so I lent him some of mine and we all share extension leads and help each other out.” Continued on page 16

Plan ahead to beat the heat this summer As temperatures continue to climb, the City of Casey is urging residents to plan ahead and take a number of steps to beat the heat this summer. Heatwaves and extreme heat days are becoming a regular feature of the Victorian summer and it is important residents take them seriously to ensure they stay healthy when the heat hits. Council urges residents to adhere to the following tips: Never leave children or pets in cars: Hot cars can kill. The temperature inside a parked car can double within minutes, putting pets and children at risk of serious heat-related illnesses and possibly death. Stay cool indoors: Keep air circulating around you and use air conditioning and fans if possible. Take a cool shower if you feel hot. If it’s too hot at your place consider visiting an air-conditioned, indoor public place. Take care of yourself: Drink plenty of water and take a bottle with you when you’re out and about. If you must be outdoors, remember to protect yourself from the sun by sticking to the shade, covering exposed skin with lightweight clothes and wearing sunscreen and a hat. Take it easy and avoid too much physical activity on a hot day. Watch out for others: Check on family, friends and neighbours most at risk, particularly those who are older, sick or frail, to make sure they are okay. Salvos gifts stolen By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IN A heartless burglary, a large box of presents donated to the Cranbourne Salvation Army for families in need has been stolen just weeks out from Christmas Day. The donated stocking fillers had been collected through the Kmart Wishing Tree at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre and were waiting to be wrapped at the Cranbourne Salvos offices when they were stolen. Cranbourne Salvation Army Ma-
jor Robert Evans said he was “disappointed more than anything” at the heartless break-in. “It’s not necessary to break in to our offices, all people need to do is ask us and were ready and happy to assist them, it’s unnecessary to go to that length,” Maj Evans said. The offices on New Holland Drive, Cranbourne East, were broken into between 9.30pm on Monday 7 December and 7am on Tuesday 8 December. A timber framed window was smashed to gain access to the offices
and Detective Senior Sergeant Rodney Maroney from the Narre Warren police station said a set of keys was also stolen. “The box of gifts and keys to the Salvos bus was stolen but, luckily, the bus wasn’t on the premises,” Det Sen Sgt Maroney said. “No CCTV footage was captured and the offenders only entered the office.” Maj Evans said the offenders “up ended” one box into another larger box of presents and dragged it out. “We are very lucky it could have

ended up a lot worse,” he said. The presents have this week been distributed to needy Casey families in the lead-up to Christmas Day. And Maj Evans said the Salvos are grateful for the generous donations made by a local resident who heard of the break-in. “Thanks to the generosity of that person who donated toys, it feels like we have made most of the stolen gifts up,” Maj Evans said. Anyone with information on the burglary is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

MORE than 200 Cranbourne residents will be treated to a plum pudding and a side of custard this Christmas, thanks to the Lynbrook Goodstart Early Learning Centre. Their goal was to donate enough food for 100 families to enjoy on Christmas day and with the help of food suppliers, Simply Fresh Fruit, Fastrac Foodservice and Lynbrook Coles they surpassed it.
The centre’s chef Troy Oswald, who came up with idea, said the children loved watching the “food table” grow. “I have done a lot of travelling and to third world countries as well and I spoke to the children about how other people live and explained that not everyone gets healthy meals three times a day,” Mr Oswald said. “So this has been a learning exercise for them as well as a huge dona-

MEN armed with a hammer, crow bar and knife have robbed a Keysborough 7-Eleven. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Sergeant Luke Kirton said the incident occurred just after 11pm on Saturday 12 December. Three men wearing black hoodies and covering their faces with bandanas entered the Cheltenham Road store. One jumped the counter with a knife in his hand, threatened the 45-year-old Hampton Park man behind it and demanded he open the till. He stole the contents of the till plus a tray of cigarettes and the group fled. Police including the canine unit attended but were unable to track the thieves. Embona Taskforce is investigating. Det Sgt Kirton urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Dinosaurs in pulling power By GEORGIA WESTGARTH SELF-CONFESSED “hyperactive nerd” scientists and geologists around the world pick Tom Kapitany’s brain on a regular basis. A man of many talents, Tom is a businessman, geologist, teacher, botanist, traveller, miner and collector. Owner of Devon Meadows Crystal World and Prehistoric Journeys and Gardenworld’s Collectors Corner, Tom is a director on the National Dinosaur Museum of Canberra and regular shipper of primordial ooze or rocks aged 3.49 billion years old. This year alone Tom has made seven overseas working trips including one around the world journey. “I’m on a plane every second week,” he said. And it’s things like dinosaur teeth fossils, amethyst caves and meteorites that get Tom in the air. “I’m one of few people that can identify most rocks and minerals,” he said. Tom is an adviser to worldclass international museums and it’s his diverse and extensive knowledge that makes him so sought after. “People in museums have a very specific area of interest but because I travel and work in many different areas and am

Tyler Stanford on the run from Santa's allosaurus at Pictures: GARY SISSONS Crystal World. 148130 interested in lesser known areas of geology I can identify things others can’t,” he said. “In the Dominican Republic I found a whole museum which was based on the wrong science so I put them straight - I often have debates and arguments with scientists,” Tom said, laughing. When he’s not climbing volcanoes in the Philippines, sourcing gems in Brazilian crystal mines, digging for dinosaur fossils in Utah deserts or advising Chinese museums, Tom is organising the next big exhibition at the National Dinosaur Museum. And he’s brought some of the museum’s prized posses-
sions home with him to put on display at his Devon Meadows home. Tom’s backyard currently resembles that of a Jurassic Park movie scene - with a festive edge. Two life size allosaurus dinosaurs that could rival T-Rex are pulling Santa and his sleigh. “Visitors can take a photo and a walk through the dinosaurs for a dollar coin donation,” Tom said. “There are a whole range of dinosaurs here of different sizes but the allosaurus who is filling in for Santa’s reindeer are high speed, rapid moving creatures with great pulling power.”

Dux did it his way By GEORGIA WESTGARTH HE’S the VCE student who had one goal during Year 12 - to please himself, and with that he managed to get dux of Hillcrest Christian College. Ahmed Saeed couldn’t sleep on Sunday night eagerly awaiting his ATAR score which was revealed to VCE students across the state on Monday 14 December. “I was up at 5am, I wasn’t worried - I just had tension and then I cruised through the morning and woke up at about 10am,” Ahmed said. “I got a phone call from my VCE co-ordinator at about 10.30am and he said ‘You got dux’!” “I didn’t expect it.” It wasn’t until 12.30pm that Ahmed checked his score of 96.75. As he decided to look up his score in his own time, it was Ahmed’s parents who were getting impatient. “Dad had been up since 9am waiting to hear and my mum was getting pretty angry,” Ahmed said, laughing. But his plan on the day and right throughout VCE paid off with a score that puts him in the top one

country before settling in Berwick, and starting at Hillcrest Christian College in Year 9. And Ahmed had nothing but praise for his school. “Hillcrest was great, you get all the support you need from the teachers over the year and they really care,” he said. “Throughout your whole school-

Cranbourne Secondary College Principal, Ken Robinson, was exceptionally proud of his dux student Danukshi Dharmasiri, who scored 92.15 and got a 50 in English as an Additional Language (EAL). “She got a perfect score in EAL which is a subject specifically for students who have been in Australia less than seven years,” Mr Robinson said. “It’s not often you get a perfect score so it was a pretty special outcome.” The principal at Lyndhurst Secondary College, Warren Wills, was also pleased with his students' performance. “Rebecca Prowd got dux of the school with 94.3, which is a fantastic effort, we had two other students also in the nineties,” Mr Wills said.

Cult of religion CASEY council’s support for special religious education in state schools is really anti-educational (Council Backing Schools Religious Studies, Berwick News, Thursday 3 December). If Casey parents and students need religious indoctrination they always have the option of attending a Christian or faith-based school of their own choice. Religion, however, should not be taught in a state school at any time of the day. Education is about opening up the mind to inquiry and science; religion is about brain washing. Real education leads to independence in life while submission to religion leads to domination by cult figures and fear. Perhaps this is what our mayor and councillors really believe: that Casey residents and ratepayers should submit to their domination? John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

MORE than 50 Cranbourne residents from the upmarket Brookland Greens estate attended the Casey council meeting on Tuesday 15 December to protest against two share houses that are set to be built in the estate. Carrying protest posters the angry residents shouted their demands from the gallery and gathered outside the chamber to listen to their ward councillor Geoff Ablett explain the council’s next step. The residents were not notified of the development because shared houses do not need a planning permit or ministerial approval. A journalist from the Seven News team was also present at the Casey council chambers for the protest.
HAPPY Birthday Casey! It’s about time council grew up! It has been 21 years since the amalgamation of the Berwick and Cranbourne shires which now make up the City of Casey.
The 21st anniversary was celebrated with a speech from the two longest serving councillors, Wayne Smith and Mick Morland. Cr Smith said the historic occasion was quite controversial adding that he didn’t think it was a good idea at the time. “But in hindsight we’ve found bigger is probably better,” he said. City of Casey CEO Mike Tyler has also served the region as long as Mick and Wayne have and said that when he started there were just 135,000 people living in both shires. “Now we’re the largest municipality in the state,” he said. ANY doubts that policing is a dangerous job? A wildly behaving man was deemed to be too unsafe to bring into the courtroom from the Dandenong police cells on 7 December. Police officers were keen to avoid his attempts to spit on them, especially since he was diagnosed as HIV.
LOCAL MP Luke Donnellan would not get dragged into a slanging match after the state opposition sent out an entertaining photo earlier this month of the serving Roads Minister protesting against toll roads when Jeff Kennett was premier. The photo shows a much younger Narre Warren North MP standing next to a sign which says "Jeff says pay toll here", and wearing a coat which has Kennett's toll police scrawled across the back. The photo was distributed by the opposition after the State Government announced plans on Tuesday for a $5.5 billion Western Distributor Project including a western suburbs toll road. Responding to questions from Star News about the photo, Mr Donnellan did not specifically refer to the image, instead stating the Western Distributor Project would provide a 'network-wide solution'.

Stab threats A MAN has threatened to stab his parents as he sharpened a fishing knife in front of them in their Hampton Park home, a court has heard. The 32-year-old accused arrived at the home’s doorstep, asking for a drink of water, in the morning of 15 September. When allowed inside, he became verbally abusive and made the threats, police prosecutor Senior Constable Liz Millear told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. The accused then smashed the home’s windows and kicked in the garage door. After being arrested and taken to Narre Warren police station, the accused reappeared at the home in an “agitated” state about 4pm. He again sharpened his knife
A defence lawyer told the court on 14 December that the accused had a “difficult” relationship with his parents, and a long history of drug and alcohol abuse including a $300-a-day ice habit. The man, who had priors for burglary, theft and drug-related offences, didn’t have a history of family violence, the lawyer said. The accused had to be resentenced for breaching a “therapeutic” community-based order due to his recent offending. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he was concerned for the man’s mental health; he’d received neither a treatment nor diagnosis for his condition. The man was sentenced to 13 month’s jail, including a four-month non-parole period. He had served 32 days already in remand.

and told his mother: “You’re not going anywhere.” The mother escaped, and drove to Endeavour Hills police station. Arresting police then took the observably drug-affected and verbally abusive man to hospital for a mental health assessment, the court was told. On 12 October, the man breached a family violence safety notice by again visiting the parents’ home. His father let him inside for a “short time” for a change of clothes, before warning him he’d call police. The enraged accused pushed the father onto a wall, and left. He later returned but was told by the father to “p*** off”. From outside, the son threw an object through the lounge room window.

IT’S a partnership that’s delivered more than toys. When the Cranbourne Library’s toy library looked like it might close in January this year the Balla Balla Community centre decided to inject some love into it. “We decided to support it and we got Outlook Disability Services on board, too,” Balla Balla manager Marree Cullinan said. Now with five volunteers running the library, Maree said the partnership has delivered some amazing outcomes for clients, volunteers and the community. “It’s provided our volunteers from Outlook with an opportunity to get out into the community and for many it would be their first experience at customer service,” she said. And for volunteer Tim Sidney it’s become more than just a job. “When I started at Outlook I did not want to volunteer or work. I now volunteer at the Cranbourne toy library every second Thursday,” he said. “At first I needed staff support as I was not comfortable talking to unfamiliar people and was very unsure of what I was meant to do and needed lots of instruction. “Now I have been volunteering independently for seven months and I am able to com-

Casey keen to push road through
Sight screens smash By JARROD POTTER SENSELESS vandalism has affected Casey-South Melbourne for the second time in a month. Casey-South Melbourne Cricket Club will have to foot another bill to fix its sight screens following an attack on Friday night - with the mesh jumped on repeatedly and kicked out of the moveable frame. Club president Ross Hibbins said it could cost the club $3000 to repair the sight screens or $15,000 to replace both after the attacks, and the club was saddened to find its facilities damaged once again. “It’s disappointing to have a few people sabotage that - not just for us, but for everyone, Hibbins said. “To have something like this happen
is disappointing and demoralising a little bit, but we just need to accept the fact that with some of the attitudes around these days, it’s unfortunately happening and we have to find a way of either stopping it or living with it. “Unfortunately, when you’re a bit demoralised you look towards living with it instead. Friday night’s attack followed a similar act of vandalism on Melbourne Cup Day which damaged the club’s other sight screen. “The first one got smashed Cup Day and then we’ve just gone and purchased some stuff to fix the old one- put some more mesh on it - and Friday we got there and saw the second one was smashed, Hibbins said. “There’s no point putting the mesh on the other one now.
“We’ll have to try and work out a way to live with that thing happening around Casey Fields and come up with some ideas for sight screens. The damaged sight-screens left the Victorian Premier Cricket club with no option but to play without them on Saturday - making the club non-compliant with Cricket Victoria policy as it adds an extra risk to the batsmen. “It’s not compliant for first and second XI - one of the requirements is that we have to have sight screens on our main ground, Hibbins said. “So we’ve advised Cricket Victoria and they’ve been very helpful and understanding, but really by the time we get back up over Christmas they need to be fixed. “Short term, we’re just going to take out the mesh and use a fabric screen -
but that won’t last in the winds at Casey Fields, but hopefully will get us through to the end of the season. With the Melbourne Stars Family Fun Day a huge success on Sunday, Hibbins said actions like these threatened the enjoyment countless users continued to have at the facility. “Days like we had yesterday (Sunday) were sensational for the City of Casey and the club and to bring that quality of sport and cricket to Casey Fields really showcases the facilities we have, Hibbins said. “We’ve got one of the best grounds and facilities in Australia, so it’s disappointing that they are not respected. Anyone with information about the attacks is encouraged to contact Cranbourne police station on 5991 0600.
By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A MUCH needed road linking Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road to the South Gippsland Highway is in planning at the City of Casey. The planning will deliver a detailed overview of an extension to the missing part of Glasscocks Road. At a recent council meeting, councillor Louise Berkelmans said the new east-west connection was hoped to be finished in the next three to five years, subject to funding. “Development between Narre Warren and Cranbourne is rapidly reaching full build out, Cr Berkelmans said. “The lack of connectivity of the planned east-west arterial route along the Glasscocks Road corridor is having significant implications for the overall transport network. Mayor Sam Aziz said the council had taken the first steps in delivering a vital part of Casey’s transport network. “The project plan has identified that the section of Glasscocks Road between South Gippsland Highway and Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road provides the greatest delivery certainty and should be prioritised for delivery within the next three to five years, he said.
Rattling the tins for a worthy cause By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE healthcare system in Laos has been given a big injection of funds by young Cranbourne church-goers. Young people who are part of the Mormon Church have given their time to participate in fundraising bake sales, traffic light collecting, sausage sizzles and car washes to raise money for Interplast Australia. After a year of volunteering their time, young Mormons from Cranbourne to Gippsland have raised more than $15,000.
The money will specifically be spent on plastic surgery for conditions such as cleft palate and burns as well as providing skills training for volunteer medical practitioners. Around 100 young Mormons were involved in the year-long fund-raising and presented the cheque for $15,106 to Interplast Australia chief executive officer Prue Ingram on Friday 4 December. Ms Ingram praised their efforts on the night, saying: “You are contributing just as much as any anaesthetist or surgeon.

Stars in a green field day By JARROD POTTER USUALLY stars shine bright white, but on Sunday all stellar cricket fans were sparklingly green as part of the Melbourne Stars Casey Family Fun Day. Held annually at Casey Fields, the Family Fun Day brings a cohort of Melbourne Stars fans to watch the last pre-season hit out before cricket’s Twenty20 Big Bash tournament. The Melbourne Stars huge-hitting started in the morning with newly formed Star’s Women’s Big Bash team playing a Southern Pioneers representative side before the men arrived to face the Victorian Premier Cricket All-Stars in the main event. While there were plenty of fun and games on the second oval - with face painters and carnival rides - the real joy was for the crowd was watching the Stars dominate proceedings. Luke Wright struck an unbeaten century off only 48 balls to excite the crowd - with none of the boundaries proving a match for the Englishman’s lusty hitting- as the Stars defeated the All-Stars by 105 runs. News photographer JARROD POTTER was there in the sea of green to capture the excitement of the Stars army.
Luke Wright smashed anything dished up to him over the fence in a dominant effort. 148435

Ben Hilfenhaus was popular as he signed countless autographs for the legion of Stars fans. 148435
Spoiling the Stars-success on Sunday was Chuck, the Melbourne Demons mascot, who won the Mascot Race. 148435
Raising the bat, Luke Wright's pre-season form could not have been finer with 100 retired out. 148435
It was a day for the whole family as everyone in Cranbourne seemed to make their way down to Casey Fields. 148435

A fellowship of healing CHRISTMAS came early at the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens last week. The Cranbourne Community Mental Health service held its Christmas barbecue lunch last Thursday 10 December, which included performances from a group of Berwick Church of Christ musicians, as well as a special visit from Santa Claus. Mental health clinician Heather Mikronis said the event was a great success. “Our clients were also delighted to receive a small gift each which was made possible through the fund-raising efforts of staff and clients of the Cranbourne Continuing Care team who have hosted several barbecues and cake stalls over the last few weeks - a real team effort

Christmas lunch for homeless CASEY’S homeless will finally have somewhere to go for Christmas lunch. For the first time in its sixyear existence, the Narre Warren Transit soup kitchen is opening its doors on Christmas Day, and will serve lunch for those who need it most in the community. Reliant on volunteers, John, Keith and the rest of the community at the Webb Street soup kitchen have urged the community to donate money, items or a helping hand in any way they can. With more than 100 people
expected to turn out for a meal at the soup kitchen on 25 December, John praised the work of the Transit volunteers who volunteer “day in, day out” to feed the homeless. The Transit Soup Kitchen will be open on Christmas Day from about noon to 2pm, and to volunteer or donate money, contact Transit on 9796 8966, or John McGreal on 0403 118 854.

Bright Christmas From page 1 With many Lupin Court residents coming and going over the years Graham said he was proud to have conned most of them into the Christmas spirit. “I couldn’t count how many families have moved in an out that I have had to convince,” Graham said. “But once they move in they love it, some have even said they wish they’d moved in earlier.” Letters of praise from onlookers are another reason the jolly bunch keep the tradition alive. “A couple of my neighbours have received letters from children and adults too thanking them for the lights and the effort, people give us beer and presents too,” Gra-
ham said. The Christmas destination will be pulled down on New Year’s Eve before midnight but Graham is hoping to mow his front lawn before then. “With all the cables, lights and decorations it’s hard to do any weeding or mowing,” he said. But it’s the smiles on Graham’s youngest visitors that really lights up the court. Graham’s prize possession is his talking reindeer. “I hide behind the car and through a microphone I can have a conversation with visitors as the reindeer. “I ask the children what they want for Christmas,” Graham said. “It’s absolutely an addiction - you can’t help yourself.”
Llewellyn Court also in Cranbourne North is lit up this Christmas.

Cranbourne residents of Brookland Greens estate have rallied at the Casey council at least three times to put a stop to two proposed 10-place shared houses, but the council say they are powerless to state government regulations. Picture: Contributed Concerned that the value of her home will decrease once tenants move into the share houses Ms Martyn said she is scared for the future of her prestigious and “peaceful” estate. “Such houses are not in keeping with the area and we are concerned at who will take up residence in them,” she said. “We don’t know who will live there it could become a halfway house for recovering drug addicts, could be low income earners and we are concerned for our safety and that these houses will lower the whole tone of the area.” Ms Martyn said the army of Brookland Greens estate residents will not stop and are hoping for the best, regardless of the blame pushing between the state planning ministry and the Casey council. “The State Government is saying it’s the council’s responsibility and the council is saying it’s the states,” she said.

A spokeswoman for state Planning Minister Richard Wynne told the Cranbourne News that boarding houses with 10 or less rooms come under council jurisdiction and do not need a planning permit. “The Planning Minister is not responsible for approving boarding houses and he did not approve this project,” she said. But Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the Minister’s claim that boarding houses with 10 rooms or less come under Council’s jurisdiction is simply misleading. And said the fact that boarding houses with 10 rooms or less do not need a planning permit is the crux of the matter. Saying that’s what Casey council wants fixed. “These requirements do not provide any opportunity for council to consider the merits of a project if it complies with the relevant legislative requirements.”

CRANBOURNE residents of the Brookland Greens estate have approached the City of Casey in the hope that court action will be taken on the proposed development of two 10-place share houses. The subdivided vacant land at the corner of Cherryhills Drive and Concord Place has caused a stir within the ‘prestigious’ estate community. And several rallies of protest along with a petition of 277 signatures was tabled at Tuesday's Casey council meeting. Former Casey Councillor Peter Giles, who lives adjacent to the site, said the proposed share houses which pose the potential to hold up to 20 tenants is an “absurd situation”. “It was unbeknown to council, they had no idea this property would be used as a share house and it seems absolutely absurd that we have a situation where council did not know,” Mr Giles said. And he wants to see a court injunction as soon as next year. “We’d hope the council would take the developer to court for injunction to stop the project on behalf of residents so the people have some sort of say in what gets built,” he said. Wendy Martyn lives directly opposite the development in Concord Place and said the share houses are all she can think about. “I can’t even think about Christmas, it’s just like the Grinch has stolen our Christmas and our lifestyle as we now know it,” Ms Martyn said.

Council plan to light up the night without cost
Family’s fightback for Bella By GEORGIA WESTGARTH DONATIONS are expected to pass $100,000 for a family whose daughter has been struck down with leukaemia. The Allan family is at the bedside of seven-year-old daughter Bella as she fights the blood cancer. It’s been four months since Bella was diagnosed and since then the Cranbourne community has raised close to $98,000 for the Allan family. Bella was rushed to hospital on Friday 4 December after a short stay at home to celebrate her seventh birthday. Close friend of the Allans and fundraising event organiser Courtney Devine said: “Bella’s afternoon relaxing at the beach was very quickly stolen from her by this awful disease.” She was rushed to the Royal Children’s Hospital with a high temperature and she and her family were told that she had no white blood cells left and will have to remain under hospital care until her cell count increases. The recent cocktail event, a part of the Fight for Bella campaign, raised $44,423 to support the family and Bella’s parents who have had to cut back on work to support her ongoing treatment. Ms Devine posted Bella’s latest turn of events on the Fight for Bella Facebook page to remind everyone that after the long lead-up to the cocktail fundrais-

More than 260 people attended the party on Saturday 28 November in North Melbourne and since then Bella has endured huge highs and lows. The generous display of support for the family of five has left them overwhelmed and Ms Devine said the entire experience has been phenomenal. “I believe we have bought together and created a community of people that have expressed empathy and kindness at whatever cost,” Ms Devine said in her speech at the cocktail party. The Allans are currently awaiting news of a bone marrow match for Bella. A golf day held on Friday 4 raised almost $8000 for the family and local businesses and residents across the south-east have all pitched in money

the fund-raising campaign. “I have been amazed at what we as a human race are capable of when it really counts,” she said.

THIS Christmas the City of Casey will be lit up by more than 9000 environmentally sustainable street lights. The Casey Council invested $3.1 million and received $1.3 million from the Australian Government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut street lighting costs throughout the municipality. Sixteen suburbs across Casey were included in the replacement works which began in November last year and changed mercury vapour lights to energy efficient LED lights. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the project had been completed nine months ahead of schedule. “It’s great news for residents as it ensures the sustainability and financial benefits will begin to be realised earlier than anticipated”, Cr Aziz said. The council plans to continue the replacement works next year with $1.55 million put aside from the five-year capital works program for the project. “This is the largest environmentally sustainable project ever undertaken by the City of Casey,” Cr Aziz said. “And is expected to reduce council’s street lighting greenhouse gas emissions by around 3750 tonnes each year and save up to $700,000 annually on street lighting costs.”

CASEY Councillor Rosalie Crestani said last Saturday’s “halal-free” barbecue for the anniversary of the Cronulla riots proved to police how “behaved” those who attended the event were. Cr Crestani was the MC for the barbecue after the planned rally – organised by Nicholas Folkes and his far-right Party for Freedom to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the violent clashes that erupted in southern Sydney on 11 December 2005 – was prohibited by a NSW Supreme Court judge. On Friday, Justice Christine Adamson agreed to prohibit the planned event, after the NSW
Aquariums & Reptiles
Police Commissioner launched a court action to block the rally from going ahead. The court heard that the planned rally risked sparking fresh violence, the Guardian Australia reported. But Cr Crestani said the amended event was still a success, despite Mr Folkes not being able to address the barbecue due to the court order. “It’s a great opportunity for the police and the media to see how behaved our group was and that we followed the court order,” she said. “I would have loved to see the judge ban a barbecue. “The police didn’t have to control us all.”
Counter-protesters were in the area but the heavy police presence kept the opposing groups separated for most of the day. More than 100 police officers on horseback had also taken to the streets. “We want to learn from the past 10 years ago,” Cr Crestani said. “We don’t want to tolerate any racism that was part of that (Cronulla riots). “There were elements we’re not proud of, but it just revealed the frustration that bubbled over 10 years ago and what can we learn from that? “How can we move forward?”

SPREADING THE CHRISTMAS CHEER
MOSAIC WINS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IT was a big week for Burbank with Mosaic apartments taking out the top prize in the Urban Renewal category at the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) awards recently. Held at Crown Palladium in Melbourne, the UDIA awards recognise excellence in building and innovation in the creation of sustainable residential communities in Victoria. Perfectly positioned in Dandenong’s award-winning Metro Village 3175, Mosaic apartments certainly have innovation covered. Designed by Burbank, in conjunction with acclaimed architects Peddle Thorp, Mosaic is comprised of 235 one and twobedroom apartments built around a central landscaped courtyard as well as three retail and three office spaces which are easily
accessible on the ground floor. These modern apartments come complete with a range of premium features including quality tiles and carpets, reconstituted stone benchtops, stainless steel European style appliances and split system air conditioning. Residents are spoilt for choice with the Dandenong Market, retail precinct and iconic Drum Theatre all just a stone’s throw away while easy access to the freeway and public transport network is the icing on the cake at this master-planned, modern complex. Burbank Homes managing director Jarrod Sanfilippo accepted the award on behalf of the Burbank team, who were thrilled to take out the top prize. “Mosaic is a state-of-the-art development that’s very different to anything ever seen before in the Dandenong area.
“We’ve had an overwhelmingly positive response from the residents, investors and the local community, and it’s great to now be recognised by the UDIA and our industry peers,” Jarrod said. “Mosaic has proven particularly popular with investors, as well as first home buyers, students and families looking to downsize,” he added. “The communal courtyards and shared recreation spaces are a real point of difference and the quality of the finishes add a premium touch to the apartments.” Mosaic apartments have sold quickly since being released to the market, however there are still a few of these award-winning apartments available for sale and ready for occupancy. For more information, visit www. mosaicapartments.com.au.
TIMBERTOP estate residents recently donated gifts for underprivileged children as part of the ’Share your Christmas’ initiative. Organised by the Timbertop Residents Group, the appeal received a generous response from locals, with piles of presents accumulating under the tree, which have now been donated to The 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre and Windermere Child and Family Services. Gifts of all shapes and sizes were generously provided by residents, including an Xbox game console. The 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre and Windermere Child and Family Services are both Pakenham-based organisations working locally to improve the physical, financial and emotional wellbeing of disadvantaged children and families. For over 150 years Windermere has been helping people live life to their full potential. They provide counselling, housing support, disability services, childcare and more. The 4Cs assists over 200 families per day, providing services such as emergency finance, food relief, accommodation, clothing, counselling and education. Both organisations were grateful for Timbertop’s contribution. Maree De George of Windermere thanked the residents for “a wonderful contribution, which will bring some Christmas joy to children and families in our community that would otherwise miss out“. This is the first year of the ’Share your Christmas’ initiative - the beginning of an ongoing partnership between Timbertop, Windermere and The 4Cs. As Timbertop estate continues to grow, so too will the initiative, which is sure to impact the community for years to come. ’Share your Christmas’ is one of many programs run by Parklea, developers of the Timbertop estate, aiming to make a difference in the community and promote friendships, fun and safety. Connecting people and communities
THE first residents of the Highgrove community recently attended a ’meet your neighbour’ event at the growing Clyde North estate. Residents were met with a coffee cart and morning tea as they introduced themselves to their fellow neighbours and discussed they’re plans for their new homes, as well as how much the community has grown since they first purchased. Some of the residents even proposed a street party once they all moved in to bring the community closer together. Anyone interested in joining the Highgrove community can visit www. highgrove.com.au or phone the sales and information centre on 1800 444 447.

Ukulele band sings up
Help the real deal
By GEORGIA WESTGARTH
MAYOR Sam Aziz has sent his season greetings to the Casey community. In a special Christmas message to residents, Cr Aziz said it was important not to forget the “true essence” of Christmas. “Unfortunately for some, Christmas isn’t always the happiest of time. Many community members are doing it tough, some are struggling to provide for their families, are without loved ones or battling health problems,” Cr Aziz said. “I urge everyone to reach out in love and friendship, whether it be by spreading the Christmas cheer with someone that is lonely, donating items to Christmas appeals or volunteering some time to a local charity supporting those in need.” He said Casey was lucky to have so many wonderful community groups, organisations, businesses and individuals who “continually contribute to creating our caring, empathetic and harmonious community”. “Council thanks you for the work you do all year around, which is particularly paramount during Christmas,” Cr Aziz said.
Left: Getting festive! Cranbourne West Primary students were twinkling stars for their adoring audience.
CRANBOURNE West residents were treated to an early Christmas concert by a group of young carollers at the Willowood Aged Care facility. Students from Cranbourne West Primary School were accompanied by the ‘UkeWest’ ukulele band on Monday 7 December where they sang a mixture of festive and cultural songs for the residents. Cranbourne West Primary School’s Debbie Nobbs said the performance left smiles on the faces of all residents. “The residents love it when our children visit them and brighten up their day,” she said.

Plan change is good for business
Kids’ chance to play RANGEBANK Preschool had a glittering display of actors and actresses as the children took to the stage to perform their Christmas nativity play. The annual event included drummers, angels, wise men, shepherds, farm animals of course Mary and Joseph. The preschool’s Barbara Ryan-Perkins said each child got a certificate of presentation and the chance to refine their performing skills.

VEX champs on world stage of metal a real kick By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ROBOTICS at Hillcrest Christian College has taken an international turn with students set to take on the US. Hillcrest’s team of six boys took home the most coveted award at the VEX Robotics Australia National Championship on Saturday 5 December. Having worked hard on their ‘goal shooting’ robot all year, the boys team won the ‘Excellence Award’ which includes an invite and ticket to the VEX World Championships held in Kentucky USA. Head of science and VEX mentor at Hillcrest Christian College, Simon Taylor,
said his students had achieved an amazing feat through their hard work and perseverance. “We don’t know what robot we’ll take to World’s yet, but I’m sure the boys will come back to school very energised,” Mr Taylor said. To compete on the world stage is an invite only event, and Mr Taylor said the achievement was a big one for the school. “I don’t think in college history they’ve had any type of team invited to compete overseas or somewhere like America,” he said. And the big win has college principal, Gregg Weaver, very excited - unofficially labelling the invite as the “biggest news
in college history!” In alliance with Dandenong High School the Hillcrest boys team also won the tournament challenge - making them the envious all round winners at the Australian Championship. The VEX robotics group was started as an extra-curricular activity at the college two years ago by Mr Taylor and he said the group had grown, now with a girls team. “Our girls team also competed at the Australian Championships and got into the semi-finals, they didn’t manage to win any awards but considering they only started this year it was a fair effort,” he said.
With a mixture of genders and ages from Year 9 to Year 12 Mr Taylor said he was extremely proud of his students. “We recently competed in the Asia Pacific competition at the Show Grounds, there were around 60 teams, most of them from China and the boys took out a judge’s award there as well,” Mr Taylor said. Once in the US, the Hillcrest team, who will be representing Australia, will put their robot in the ring to compete against 30 other countries. And with the ‘Robot Control Skills Challenge’ award under their belt from the Australian National Championships, the Hillcrest team is well set.
THE Hampton Park Development Plan has been amended by Casey Council over concerns about the Hallam Road landfill. Following consultation with local residents, the council adopted the revised plan at a meeting last month with amendments regarding the immediate concerns of a business and landowner in the direct surrounds of the Hallam Road landfill. The two parcels of land, at 735 South Gippsland Highway (Diaco's Nursery) and 825 South Gippsland Highway, Hampton Park, had previously been identified in the plan as “future public open space”. The amended plan now designates the land for commercial use. “The amendments to the plan provide certainty for commercial operations which have for many years been undertaken on the two parcels of land, which were previously designated for future public open space,” River Gum Ward councillor Damien Rosario said. “In reviewing the previous plan, we have concluded that this open space is surplus and have now amended the development plan to allow ongoing certainty for the current and future operations of commercial businesses at the site.”

New club record By DAVID NAGEL THERE are so many different ways to approach cricket, but only with an attitude like John Cuthbertson's can you produce something truly unique like he did on Saturday. The Merinda Park all-rounder’s “live by the sword, die by the sword” mentality reaped the ultimate reward, a club-record 228 against Officer in the F Grade clash at Donnelly Reserve No 2. And while the actual size of the number is astounding, it’s the finer details that will make this an innings that will live in club folklore forever. The self-confessed happy-hooker batted for just 123 minutes and faced 116 balls, striking 33 fours and 10 towering sixes. He was first man out, dismissed before tea on day two, after sharing a 299-run opening partnership with Paul Humphrey that began late on day one. “I love anything short; I’m a compulsive hooker, but the bat’s bigger than the ball so I back myself in,” the 43-year-old said after making his 14th century at the club. “They (Officer) didn’t bowl that badly but it just seemed to be my day. Once the runs started flowing I backed myself in even more and even the miscued shots were going to the boundary. It was just my day, an unbelievable day to be a part of.” Cuthbertson has had quite the career with Merinda Park since moving there from North Heidelberg around the turn of the century. He has made more than 6000 runs, taken in excess of 400 wickets, has taken a hat-trick and has twice bagged hauls of seven wickets. He has made more runs and taken more

But Saturday’s knock, well it was special and is still sinking in. “To make the double hundred
and break the club record, when you sit back and start to think about it, it makes you feel pretty special about yourself I suppose,” he said. “Someone will break it eventu-
ally but I’ve got it now and I’m going to enjoy that time while I’ve got it. It might happen this year, it might happen next year, or it might happen in 10-years’ time.” Cuthbertson said there were some key memories from his big day out that he will treasure forever. “Seriously, hats off to Officer, Timmy (captain Tim Smith) and the boys, they were fantastic out there and a real credit to their club,” he said. “They knew if they bowled short I was going to try and whack it over the fence, but they’re a really good bunch of blokes and even though they were getting smashed they kept their spirits high.” And from his own team? “There’s a bloke like Mark Dipilla, he’s been out in the middle for eight of my centuries, and he was umpiring, so to have him out there was really special,” he said. “Every time I’ve had a brain fade over the years he’s always been there to calm me down and he did it again on Saturday.” And then there’s John’s son, Dylan, an assistant-coach at the club and the most talented leg-spin/batting all-rounder in the WGCA Premier Division. “It’s funny, he took me out for dinner on Saturday night and I kept telling him how good I was and he kept laughing at me so we’ve already had a bit of fun with it,” John said. “But seriously, I’m Dylan’s biggest fan and any record that I hold at the club I hope it’s him that goes on to break it. I reckon he just needs to back himself a bit more that’s all.” And have an attitude like his oldman did on the weekend!
Exposure proves priceless for Lambden By JARROD POTTER “YOU’RE in.” Nathan Lambden returned to the sheds on Saturday with an interesting text message waiting for him. The Casey-South Melbourne spearhead had received his call up to the Victorian Premier Cricket All Stars side, which took on the Melbourne Stars in an exhibition Twenty20 match on Sunday at Casey Fields. Lambden, 22, from Cranbourne, was on standby most of the week after injuries decimated a few original squad members - but getting that news on Saturday presented a huge opportunity for Lambden to charge in against the Stars. “Got called Thursday at work, and I was pretty happy with that - was on standby at that stage and wasn’t really confirmed that I’d be playing,” Lambden said. “I was batting on Saturday and came off at the tea break and got a message saying, I was in and had to be in there early on Sunday.” It wasn’t easy going for Lambden, who finished up with 2/58 from his four overs as the Stars ramped up the run-rate. While the All Stars were given a

bit of a batting lesson by the Stars - who amassed 3/283 - Lambden thought the experience was priceless as it showed him what it takes to stop the best. “It was very challenging, but was an awesome experience,” Lambden said. “Bowling to blokes who’ve played international cricket and state cricket and seeing the massive difference between premier cricket and the Stars - it was a massive, massive step up.” “They really cash in on the bad balls - literally have to hit the spot every ball ... if you’re a fraction full
or wide they make you pay.” While he isn’t a bunny with the blade, Lambden was the last man sent to the crease in a power-packed Premier All Stars batting attack, but didn’t let his demotion down the order worry him. “I don’t mind it - got the opportunity to go out there and there was no pressure batting at 11 and only had three or four overs, so I had some fun with Ejaaz (Alavi) and was lucky enough to get onto a couple.” By get onto a couple Lambden actually smashed the Big Bash bowlers about in his 27 off 15 balls
including a few swatted sixes to help the All Stars finish on 9/177. Lambden’s switch to Casey-South Melbourne this season is starting to reap rewards as he’s taken 23 wickets at 18, including 7-65 against Monash. While the Swans’ 2-8 record looks bad on paper, Lambden thinks the side has been in the hunt more often than not, and just needs to finish the job they have often started. “Loving it- absolutely loving it - fresh new start and got wonderful coaches and the whole club have welcomed me in and I’m fitting in well,” Lambden said. “The worst thing about the start is probably three or four of the first six games we were in the game for about 80 per cent of the time. “We’d lose wickets in a bunch or a partnership would get away ... only a couple of games were we really flogged, like the Monash game. “But you learn those things, and the club is so young and the two wins - you can see the belief and confidence and training has gone up another step and Saturday is another big opportunity.” The Premier All-Stars play the Melbourne Renegades at the Junction Oval from 4pm on Tuesday.
Jono Fennell savoured every second playing for Victoria at the Pacific Schools Games where the local basketballer won a gold medal. Picture: SUPPLIED
Golden honour for Fennell, 12 By JARROD POTTER GOLDEN goals were reached for Jono Fennell and his Victorian schoolboys team mates as the basketball side claimed a national championship. Fennell, 12, from Lynbrook, played an important part in Victoria’s under-12 basketball team at the Pacific School Games last month in Adelaide. “It was really good - we didn’t lose a game and we beat every team by about 40 points,” Fennell said. “We played India and beat them by 120 points - there were other teams there like China or Macau and all of the states in Australia, except Tasmania. “The experience was really cool - it was just awesome and I loved it.” The versatile swing-man made the most of his selection as he featured prominently in Victoria’s rampaging run to the grand final - winning most games by over 40 points. “We didn’t really have a starting five, I started sometimes though,” he said. “Played the three-man, sometimes four man and as a shooting guard basically.” The Lynbrook Primary School student got to drape a gold medal around his neck after TeamVic survived a late comeback from New South Wales in the finale to run out victors. “In the grand final we won by 13 points against New South Wales,” Fennell said. “We started off really well - we were smashing them by about 20 or more points then at half time they came back brought it back to about 10 points. “It was pretty nerve-wracking as they didn’t miss a shot - so they brought it back really close and we won.” It capped off a stellar tournament for Fennell - who also relished making a four-point play against New South Wales in an earlier round robin clash at the tournament. For now it’s back to the VJBL for the Dandenong Rangers up-and-coming star with his under-13 side.

Jimmy sends the scholars By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 12 (Day 1) A SCINTILLATING foundation was set for Casey-South Melbourne (290) by centurion James Seymour against Melbourne Uni (2/74). Seymour (123) smashed his first Swans’ ton at better than a run a ball and in tandem with Devin Pollock (59) added 149 for the second scalp. It was even more remarkable as Seymour didn’t have any sight-screens after they were vandalised on Friday. It didn’t stop the Swans opener teeing off in a swashbuckling innings more fitting of the Big Bash pre-season match the following day though. Seymour hit the scholars to all parts including one monster six that cleared the light-tower and landed on the old train tracks. He raced through the 70s and 80s with more of the same before Seymour saluted the crowd in style - as he bludgeoned Ajay Chawla into the stand to bring up the milestone after only 40 overs. As he tried to continue the rampage, Seymour got too ambitious as he reverse-swept Daniel Hutton (3/60) into the waiting hands of Tom Batters and from there the Swans innings started to shake. Pollock fell soon after Seymour and triggered a collapse as the middle order couldn’t cash in on another strong partnership. Captain Lachie Sperling (23) hit the rank ball and sped into the 20s, but succumbed quickly as did Keirran Voelkl (1) and vice-captain Michael Wallace (0). Dylan Hadfield (29) dug in before the tailenders Brendan Rose (17), Leigh Diston (17), Nathan Lambden (7) and Jackson Fry (4no) helped eke out 64 for the final four wickets. “It’s good to have a score on the board to defend, so it’s up to the bowlers now to get the wickets,” Sperling said. “Top three - particularly Pollock and Seymour - were sensational. “Jimmy was just in the zone and he just kept going, and I suppose he’d be a bit disappointed
An almighty tonk got James Seymour to his maiden century at Casey-South Melbourne. 148422 Pictures: JARROD POTTER

when he got out cause there was a big score on offer, but it’s still his first premier ton and good for him to get.” Sperling remains bemused about the middle order’s stop-start efforts, but was pleased to see a defendable total on the board heading into day two. “They bowled areas and unfortunately the middle order couldn’t keep up the same pace as what Seymour and Pollock were doing and kept losing wickets constantly - probably should have a few more on the board but we’ll take 290.” While Sperling was thrilled with Seymour’s effort, the under sung knock of Pollock really caught his eye as the young Gippsland-based wicketkeeper excelled in his first innings at number three. “Mainly the way we went about it - particularly Dev - won’t get the accolades but his knock was just as important and steadied the ship there

Demons aim at third T20 title By RUSSELL BENNETT A KOOWEERUP and Upper Beaconsfield rematch could still be on the cards for the WGCA’s Kookaburra Twenty20 decider after both the Demons and the Maroons made it through to the semifinals next month. The Demons (3/163) easily had the better of the Maroons (110) in last season’s decider at Toomuc Reserve in Pakenham and are aiming for a brilliant third T20 title in as many seasons. But standing in the way of
a repeat of last year’s grand final are Tooradin and B Grade surprise packet, Gembrook. The giant-killing Brookers (111) rolled Carlisle Park for just 79 on Sunday at Mountain Road in Cockatoo after cruising past Premier outfit Emerald by four wickets in round one. This is the second straight season the Brookers have reached the semis on the back of wins over both the Bombers and Vikings. But for the second straight season, the Brookers face the unenviable task of trying to
find a way past the dominant Demons in the semis after Michael Giles’s side cruised to a five-wicket win over Pakenham Upper/Toomuc off the back of a pair of quickfire innings from Brad Remy (43) and Chris Bright (44no). The other semi-final pits Upper Beaconsfield against Tooradin after the Seagulls (6/142) beat Devon Meadows (6/141) by four wickets and the Maroons (4/112) - led by an unbeaten Bathiya Perera half-century - were far too strong for Merinda Park (109).

and batted with Jimmy,” Sperling said. “That’s his first go at number three - really pleased with his efforts.” The Swans chipped out two early scalps before Ben Fletcher (39no) and James McNeil (25no) dug in to keep the rot from spreading. First hour will be crucial - they’ve got Fletcher at the crease and he’s made a lot of runs over the time and he’ll be the key wicket, but we’ve just got to keep being patient with the ball.

Spotlight shining on Bulls on parade By DAVID NAGEL PAKENHAM may be stealing the glare of the early-season spotlight but a serious challenger is emerging for the West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier Division crown. The Lions are untouched and undefeated, clear favourites after the first half of the season, but it’s the improving form and undoubted quality of Cardinia that is emerging as a genuine threat. The Bulls (6/256) won their fourth game on the trot on Saturday with a clinical run-chase against Merinda Park (152). The star of the show for the Bulls was 21-year-old opener Alex Nooy (110), who made his maiden Premier Division century, while gunrecruit Ben Maroney (75) also put his indelible mark on proceedings. Nooy, a classy left-hander, and Maroney, a free-scoring run-machine, put the Cobras to the sword with the biggest partnership of the match. The Bulls now sit second after a slow start to the season. “We’re really happy with the way the season is going - we’re building to finish in the top four, and hopefully the top two,” skipper Neil Barfuss said after his own innings of 31 not out. Back-to-back champion Kooweerup (3/122dec and 1/188) has leapt from fifth to third on the ladder after claiming maximum points against Cranbourne Meadows (118 and 190) at Lawson Poole Reserve. The Demons had first-innings points locked away on day one and, with the Rebels on 4/49 overnight, would have expected an early-afternoon finish to day two. But Shameera Weerasinghe (86) and Shannon Marum (51) had other ideas, keeping the Demons in the sun despite the efforts of Jake Bardwell (4/27). The Demons were set 187 for outright points.
Cardinia’s Alex Nooy is a picture of concentration as he marches his way to his maiden WGCA Picture: ROB CAREW Premier Division century against Merinda Park. 148347 The tricky-chase was accomplished with little fuss however, with Chris O’Hara (74 not out), Jess Mathers (49 not out) and Bardwell (46) all in ripping nick. Ladder-leader Pakenham (176 and 4/61) has fallen 15-runs short of outright victory against Tooradin (59 and 192) at Toomuc Reserve. Lions’ skipper Dom Paynter enforced the follow-on at the beginning of day two and in-form speedster Jack Ryan (4/73) struck early. The Seagulls looked set for a repeat of their embarrassing effort from
day one before former Lion Bradey Welsh (81) and Tom Hussey (40) settled things down. The Lions were eventually set a target of 76 runs for victory off just six overs but, while every batsman was unselfish, they just fell short of their target. “I thought the attitude of the team was great throughout the game - concentration levels were up and there was really no lull,” Paynter said after the match. Ryan was the real standout for the Lions finishing with match-figures of 9/98.
Upper Beaconsfield (158) also found a far more willing opponent on day two with Emerald (89 and 7/186) denying the Maroons outright points at Upper Beaconsfield. Resuming at 4/124 the Maroons coughed and spluttered their way to 158 with Matt Hutson (55 not out) batting well against the quality bowling of Clint Marsh (3/34) and Trent Rolfs (3/24). Batting a second time, Emerald was well served by Mark Alenson (68 not out), who quelled the fire of Maroons’ skipper Scott Pitcher (3/45).

After a solid start from the Northerners, the experienced Eagles’ middle order swooped on all red-leathery objects at Lois Twohig Reserve. Going at five an over, North Dandenong was left at the mercy of Steve Spoljaric (95) and Matt Chasemore (82) - who added 161 to steal the advantage back for Cranbourne. Spoljaric was caught on the very edge of the fence as he looked to pull into the houses for his century, but that only brought Lucas Ligt (67no) to the crease. Ligt punished just as many rank Northern deliveries, but eventually Spoljaric called his side back for a go with the ball. Whatever Spoljaric saw in the
Cranbourne's Brayden Roscoe goes for a slip and slide against Picture: JARROD POTTER North Dandenong. 148423 wicket paid off as he sniped four wickets before stumps, despite the best efforts of opposing skipper Nasrat Malikzada (21). BERWICK V BUCKLEY RIDGES AFTER missing out last week against Hallam Kalora Park, it was Brad James’ (58) time to shine in a gutsy rescue effort for Berwick (9/144dec) against Buckley Ridges (3/26). James watched the top order collapse around him as Lucas Hoogenboom (4/19) continued his good form with the ball. At 4/19, the side
was in disarray until Ryan Crawford (42) enlisted for the cause alongside James. The tandem added a clean 100 before James succumbed to Hoogenboom and when Crawford departed soon after, the Bears’ tally stalled again. Some captaincy wizardry from Jarrod Goodes brought the Bears back in for a short-ditched barrage, which managed to undo three Ridges’ top order bats including the skipper Dan Watson (0) trapped LBW. Jayson Hobbs (10no) survived and will go hunting for Buckley Ridges
to get the remaining 119 for victory. HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v LYNDALE Heinz Southern Districts (7/258dec) has Lyndale (6/70) over a barrel. It’s not just first innings points that are at danger for the Dales but the outright seems far too close after the Cobras unleashed with bat and ball alike. With a bit from everyone, especially the former skipper Trevor Davies (82) and Matt Downe (45no), the hosts were not gracious with the way they dispatched anything Lyndale threw at them. Ciaron Connolly (4/75) continued to burden the lion’s share of responsibility as eventually the pain was cut short by declaration. It just changed the format of the pain though as Lyndale fell to 6/70 by stumps as Hari Krishan (4/16) inflicted another scintilla of soreness. 188 is the margin on the first innings and realistically, 14 wickets is the magic number Heinz will aim for next week. NARRE WARREN v HALLAM KALORA PARK The rain on Friday made Sweeney Reserve unplayable on Saturday, forcing the match to be rescheduled as a one-dayer this week.
All’s sweet with Dad CRANBOURNE all-rounder Matt Chasemore needed to shout his daughter some lollies at the break after his earlier rampage - belting sixes onto the hill at NORTH DANDENONG - almost cleaned up his family! Successive balls were smashed towards the Chasemore contingent who had to duck and cover from the power striking Premier champion. 148423 Picture: JARROD POTTER

Up and down on the day HAMPTON PARK BOWLS THE start of the second half of the season was a replica of the first game of the season, with a loss for Division 1 and a win for Division 3. Playing against the powerful Mulgrave Country Club team at Pound Road, the Parkers, although beaten by 18 shots, made significant strides forward. Dot Carr, Ann Westwell, Neville Hendrie and Chris Hendrie won 22-11, but Geoff Ladner, Ron Beverly, Andrew Brandolin and Denise Eastick lost 13-23. Marion Battaglia, Ian Kitt, Toni Sutton and Helen Lambert lost 12-31. Hampton Park (1) 2-47 lost to Mulgrave CC (5) 14-65. Division 3 were at Glen Eira McKinnon and had a morale boosting 46 shot win. Aaron Ottaway, Rob Woff, Jim Westwell and Heather Naismith were the biggest winners; losing only four of the 21 ends they won 29-11, while Lou Soliga, June Damon, Peter Hayden and Geoff Ampt scored 7 on the last end to finish 32-17. Grace Hogan, Jen Sherry, Gwen Clough and Ray Wood added to the scoring with a 29-16 win. Hampton Park (2) 16-90 defeated Glen Eira McKinnon (2) 0-44. Saturday was not the best day for the Parkers. Division 1 at Edithvale is starting to put pressure on themselves with another loss. Closest was Stan Hatch, Jack Edwards, Chris Barnes and Laurie Edwards with a 1 shot loss 22-23. Chris Hendrie, John Nunan, Sean McDonald and Larry Simpson had a 4 shot loss, 17-22 and John Wright, Peter Hayden, Andrew Brandolin and Mark Paton a 6 shot loss 21-27. Shane Hardy, Helen Lambert, Steve Barnes and Warwick Hardy went
down 18-31. Hampton Park (1) 0-78 lost to Edithvale (1) 18-103. Division 3 played a ‘lucky’ draw at home against Caulfield Park Alma. With two ends to play Trevor Harbright, Ellen Smith, Geoff Ladner and Neville Hendrie scored two 3s to win their game 28-15. Heather Naismith, Marion Battaglia, Toni Sutton and Denise Eastick won 18-11, while Richard Pallet, Aaron Ottaway, Jim Westwell and Geoff Ampt won their last four ends but went down 20-26. Val Moore, Jen Sherry, Ron Beverly and Shane Collins staged a comeback after the break to lose 16-30. Hampton Park (2) 9-82 drew with Caulfield Park Alma 9-82. Division 6 had another disappointing loss, against Vermont South. Vince Kovacic, Lou Soligo, Gerry Cox, and Jos van Hout won 20-18 and Janice Collins, Bill Webb, Gavin Wilson and Craig Richards won 19-18, but the losses were greater. Wayne Grimsey, Rob Woff, Brian Diaper and Ray Wood 12-30 and Val Simpson, Bill Holden, Jaime Lehmann and Ian Kitt 14-21. Hampton Park (3) 4-65 lost to Vermont South (5) 14-87. CASEY MEN’S SINGLES The first two rounds of the Casey Men’s Singles were played at Pakenham on Sunday with three Hampton Park Bowlers participating. Unfortunately Andrew Brandolin was eliminated in the first round but Laurie Edwards and Geoff Ampt both won their two games. In the expected tight contests Edwards won 25-23 and 2520 and Ampt won 25-22 and 25-13. They will now contest the semifinals/final next Sunday.
Panthers poised to pounce mightily By RUSSELL BENNETT PEARCEDALE is well poised to stay within reach of the top two sides in the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association’s District division firsts after a strong start to their clash with Main Ridge on Saturday. Sent in to bat, Panthers openers Brad Trotter and Matt Cousland combined for a 50-run stand to lay the foundations for a strong batting display. While Cousland fell for 17, Trotter recorded his first half-century since the season’s opening round with a fine 80 before he eventually fell legbefore to Adam Bryant (4/50). Six of the home side’s batsmen got doublefigure starts, with skipper Kaine Smith (71) and Luke Jennings (46) in particular making a huge impact with the willow. While Smith has 12 wickets at an outstanding average of just 9.4 so far this season, he was yet to fire a real shot with the bat until Saturday and it came at exactly the right time as he led his side to 7/261 from its 80 overs. The Panthers currently sit in third on the District firsts ladder, behind the undefeated Baden Powell and Red Hill. A strong performance next week in their last day’s play before the Christmas break will provide plenty of momentum for the second half of their season as Pearcedale tries to back up their 2014/15 Sub-District premiership. No chocolates for RSL CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS SATURDAY Round 10 Division 2: Cranbourne RSL 75 lost to Mulgrave Country Club 77 In a much improved effort this week the RSL just failed to catch Mulgrave Country Club, going down by just 2 shots. Mal Watkinson’s team did well by winning by 5 shots. The other three sides just lost, in a thrilling last couple of ends. If we continue to bowl like today, wins will come in the new year. Results: G Jones, K Hickson, W Brannan, M Watkinson 23-18. F Scicluna, G Dore, S Hickson, K Hocking 18-19. R Townley, J Bignold, R Chapman, N Fell 17-19. K Walker, R Crawford, J Wylie, B Bradbury 17-21. Division 5: Cranbourne RSL defeated Cranbourne 66. The RSL got the job done against local rivals Cranbourne. The margin was a lot closer than our previous encounter, and it was good to see the team did not fall for the trap of taking it easy. David Angee and John Spencer’s teams leading the way with 6 shot wins. Results: M Ryan, M Macintyre, R Elliott, J Spencer 22-16, K Currie, B Cook, M Bobetic, D Angee 22-16, B Walsh, J Carretero, C Stevenson, J Vowles 16-12. I Maat, H Rogers, M Hodges, Y vd Wees 19-22. Division 8 - Team 4: Yes you guessed right another walkover, that is four in a row, some sort of record. The team badly needs a game but the cheap points are a bonus. Division 8 - Team 3 In a close game the RSL just lost to the powerful Dandenong RSL rec team( our cousins). Peter Zimmerman’s team did their best winning by 3 shots. Results: R Bligh, A Underwood, P Zimmerman 22-19. L Meagher, B Mason, P Leake 19-26.
The Cranbourne RSL aveo Retirement Living winners for December are from left, Neil Fell, Jack Wylie and Ken Hocking. Picture: CONTRIBUTED MIDWEEK Division 3: Cranbourne RSL 61 defeated Ferntree Gully 46. A real gritty win by the RSL after an upset loss last week. John Spencer and Ray Chapman’s sides leading the way with two 9 shot wins. One more game before the Christmas break. Results: A Pichard, P Males, H Rogers, R Chapman 25-16. R Bligh, S Brobyn, D Hut, J Spencer 22-13. C Arlove, P Dalton, M Hodges, Y vd Wees 14-17. Division 4: Cranbourne 65 defeated Dandenong Club 48. On the back of Steve Hickson’s side 16 shot win, the RSL overcame a determined Dandenong Club team. The other two rinks were very close with one draw and Tom Bonney’s one shot win. A bye next week so next game is on 19 January 2016, so Merry Christmas and a safe New Year. Results: P Campion, M Hogan, K Hickson, S Hickson 25-9. H Reefman, V Bonney, G Dore, T Bonney 23-22. B Hall, A Black, M Bobetic, J Black 17-17. December aveo: Neil Fell, Jack Wylie and Ken Hocking were the big winners as 42 bowlers took part in last Thursday’s December aveo tournament. Another great day was had by all participants.
Chairman pleased with greens results CRANBOURNE BOWLS SATURDAY CHAIRMAN of selectors, Lyndsay Coate commented after the game “A big win with three rinks up and a winning margin of 28 shots keeps us in touch of the main pack. The selection committee is pleased how the teams have become more competitive in the top side as the season goes on” In Round 10, Fritz Helle and his team of Roger Roscoe, Stan Myers and John Stanley were the standout rink winning by 17 shots and Skip Ian Barrenger and his team of John Parker, Lyn Whalley and Lynne Wood winning by 14 shots were not far behind. The second side with two rinks up and two down lost in a close contest with Glen Waverley going down by 7 shots. While the third side were well beaten by Chadstone, the fourth side were very competitive going down by only 13 shots. Highlights were an eight by the rink of Scott De Piazza, J Durrant, Jeremy Smith and the retired banker and ex club treasurer himself, Jim Hanks. That team went on to win by 3 shots on their rink. Side 1 Division 2: Cranbourne 89 defeated South Oakleigh 61; F Helle 29-12, D Boggie 1714, I Barrenger 28-14, and J Mulder 15-21. Cruise convert a new face By ALISTAIR KENNEDY
MODEL RANGE Cascada 1.6-litre turbo-petrol two-door convertible: $41,990 (automatic)
have paddle shifters. That extra torque is welcome because, with a kerb weight of 1710 kg, Cascada is easily the heaviest car in its class. Indeed it’s heavier than many Commodore models. Fuel consumption is listed at 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres. We averaged 9.1 L/100 km during our week-long test; 7.3 L/100 on the motorway and 10.1 around the suburbs. So, as is often the way the officially measured number are very optimistic. Cascada uses the latest Holden MyLink infotainment system displayed on a seveninch colour screen display (nontouch). Features include satellite navigation; Bluetoooth phone and audio streaming; apps such as Pandora, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio; and DAB+ digital radio. In addition to mandatory safety features such as airbags (dual front and side), ABS brakes and stability control Cascada also comes with hill start assist; dual Isofix childseat anchorage; reversing camera; rain sensing windscreen wipers; front and rear parking sensors; auto protector halogen headlights; daytime running lights and front fog lights. Other standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels; sports suspension; electric parking brake; leather trim perforated Siena seats; alloy sports pedasl; cruise control; and dual zone air conditioning. Heated front seats and steering wheel provide an added incentive to drive with the roof down during the cooler months - often the best time for opentop driving. Cascada is nimble enough around town with only reasonable outside visibility with the roof up, obviously much better with it down.
Holden Cascada is an affordable cruiser either around town or on the highway. It cruises comfortably on the motorway although rough rural roads can generate some scuttle shake, which hardly comes as a surprise considering the large cabin opening but otherwise ride quality is firm and comfortable. Its mass means that it not as sporty as we’d like but steering response is predictable and safe with only a hint of understeer when pushed through corners. Holden Cascada is a welcome addition to the affordable convertible niche market and it compares well with its all-European rivals in terms of engine performance, interior space, features and price. It’s more a cruiser than a sports car but that’s what most of its potential buyers will have in mind. To arrange a test drive contact Barry Bourke Holden, 755 Princes Highway, Berwick, on 9707 2222, or Cranbourne Holden, 217A South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne, on 5995 4555.

ANOTHER new name on the Australian motoring scene, Holden Cascada is the convertible version of the Holden Astra. Opinions are divided on the material used for convertible roofs. In the last decade or so there was a move away from the traditional fabric top towards a solid retractable roof, the logic being that buyers wanted the perceived advantages of the looks and security of a coupe when the roof is closed. Opel/ Holden followed this trend with the previous Astra Twin Top but has now reverted to the soft top roof that was used in the original Astra Convertible with the new Cascada. Convertible buyers are very fashion conscious and their cars have to look the part. Cascada ticks all the boxes, it’s a neat and attractive car. Like all convertibles it looks at its best - and attracts most looks - with the roof tucked away inside the boot. At a fraction under 4.7 metres Cascada is significantly longer than its competitors which include the convertible variants of Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, Mini Cooper, Renault Megane CC, and VW Golf. As such it can provide a level of comfort for four full-size passengers that its smaller rivals can’t match. Rear legroom for taller occupants will probably require doing a deal with those in front. As is the norm with convertibles, boot space is compromised by the need to store the roof within it. Cascada’s 360 litres with the roof in place and 280 litres with it stored away is pretty good. There’s a 17-inch steel space saver spare wheel under the boot floor to save boot space. The roof has three layers and opens automatically in just 17 seconds and at speeds up to 50 km/h. Cascada uses the same 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbopetrol engine as the sporty Astra GTC coupe with a handy 125 kW of power, and torque of 260 Nm torque from 1650 to 4500 revs. The only transmission is six-speed automatic, it does not
