Vallis has all you need Vallis IGA’s got you covered for any last minute supermarket runs in preparation for Christmas lunch or dinner. Both their Hamlyn Heights and Highton stores will be open every day over the festive season; even on Christmas morning until noon. Due to celebrate their 36th Christmas at their Hamlyn Heights Store, co-owner Tony Valenti has seen the rise in need for organic and gluten free products over the years. This Christmas both Vallis stores have a beautiful selection of Christmas gifts in those areas of demand. “You’d be amazed by how busy it is here on Christmas morning,” he said. “There’s always last minute things people need to pick up.” Vallis IGA is currently offering specials
on Christmas cakes and Belgium chocolate gift boxes, with Italian Panettone’s priced at 20 per cent off in the lead up to Christmas. Hot chickens will also be available to order. Mr Valenti said customers could have a chat with the staff at their continental delicatessen about custom, pre-made to order antipasto platters of cured meats and cheeses. “We can accommodate for a range of platters if people have something in mind,” he said. “Our produce is always fully stocked and everything is fresh.” Vallis IGA is at 111 Vines Rd, Hamlyn Heights, and 53 North Valley Rd, Highton. For more information, phone 5278 4247 (Hamlyn Heights) or 5243 1400 (Highton).

Merry Christmas, says Imam as Mohammad, Jesus birthdays collide
MPs attend city mosque By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN This year’s confluence of the birthdays of Islam’s Prophet Mohammad and Christianity’s Jesus Christ served as a powerful symbol of unity, according to the Imam of the Geelong mosque, Shaykh Mohammad Ramzan. Shaykh Ramzan said Mohammad’s birthday on 24 December and the traditional date of Christ’s birthday on 25 December was a timely symbol. “In these difficult times it is amazing how the date of birth of both figures has come so close to each other so our communities can come closer to each other also, he said. Shaykh Ramzan said many Muslims also participated in the festive season, decorating their homes, giving and receiving gifts, attending gatherings and conducting social activities. The Imam said he also wished the Geelong community a merry Christmas from all members of the Islamic community. Shaykh Ramzan said he recently hosted a visit to the Geelong mosque by federal members of parliament Richard Marles and Sarah Henderson. “I invited them to visit to show solidarity and demonstrate that we as human beings are one and stand with each other to fight any kind of terrorism or atrocity committed against humanity. Shaykh Ramzan said such visits were well received by the local Muslim community, especially in such difficult times. Crime hike ‘state’s fault’
NEWS
In Brief Men injured
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Crime rates in Geelong and Surf Coast have jumped dramatically in the past 12 months, according to latest figures. Surf Coast suffered a jump of 33 per cent, Geelong’s rate rose 16 per cent and Borough of Queenscliffe was up 23 per cent. Geelong West and Manifold Heights shared the biggest increase, 122 per cent. Torquay was next with a 77 per cent jump, while Ocean Grove was 24.5, Barwon Heads 17.9 and Portarlington 21.5. Police recorded 20,612 offences in the region for the 12 months ending 30 September, up from 17,802 in the corresponding period the previous year. Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay said the figures showed disturbing trends, with
overall crime rates soaring across Victoria. “Statewide, under Daniel Andrews, crime rates are soaring alarmingly, with sexual offences rising from 10,564 to 11,538, up 9.2 per cent,” Mr Ramsay said. “Just as disturbing is the increase in drug-related crime, up 16.9 per cent, and weapons and explosives offences, up 16.1 per cent. “The number of offences recorded by police in the year to 30 September 2015 was 482,959, up six per cent from 455,728 for the same period last year. “Under Daniel Andrews crime rates are up but police numbers are down and our streets are less safe than they were a year ago.” South Barwon MP Andrew Katos said he had received many complaints about property crimes. “There’s almost a doubling of the crime rate in Torquay, which shows there are issues on
the Surf Coast,” he said. “Waurn Ponds Police Station is operating with half a complement at the moment. There should be 32 but there are 17 actually at the station. “Over the last 12 months we’ve seen total number of police drop by nine across the state. There’s no recruiting going on. “Premier Daniel Andrews and his part-time Police Minister Wade Noonan have vacated the floor when it comes to law and order.” Mr Noonan’s spokesperson said the figures were higher because of an increase in justice procedures in line with new offences introduced in 2013. A major factor in Geelong’s increase was the work of a “one-man crime wave” charged with 500 deception and 500 theft offences, the spokesperson said.

Bikie ’dangerous’ A bikie accussed of the hit-run death of a Corio cyclist has been refused bail, with the Geelong magistrate ruling he was a danger to the public. From page 1 “By standing together and inviting Geelong’s leaders to visit the mosque the Islamic community wants to show that it is also accepting and welcoming. “We want to show that Muslims believe in peace and tolerance and love Australian values as Australian Muslims. “Our mosque doors are open anytime to anyone who wants to know anything about the mosque or Islam.” Mr Marles said Australia was a proudly multicultural nation. “Australia has been greatly enriched by the social and economic contribution of people from all faiths and nations on earth,” Mr Marles said. “The Islamic community in Geelong is very much a part of our rich multiculturalism and it is important we recognise and celebrate this.” Mr Marles said all community leaders and members of parliament had a responsibility to work to foster social cohesion and mutual respect. “Too often we have seen members of parliament seek to divide and damage our social cohesion with inflammatory and offensive remarks,” Mr Marles said. “It is the responsibility of all community leaders to work together to foster unity and respect, not seek to divide Australians against Australians.” Ms Henderson said the mosque visit was an important opportunity to thank members of the Islamic Society of Geelong for their leadership and commitment to a peaceful society. “I thank Shaykh Mohammad Ramzan for doing so much to promote peace and harmony in our community.” Imam Ramzan has been an outspoken critic of Islamic terrorism. In September 2014 he told the Indy he regarded ISIS as “terrorists” and was concerned about young Australian Muslims joining the group in the Middle East. “These people can be dangerous for us in Australia as well,” he said. Imam Ramzan denounced ISIS attacks on third-party targets. “If America or someone does something wrong, what has Australia got to do with that?”

Man wanted A man wanted over alleged violent offences could be lurking in Geelong, according to police. Victoria Police said 26-year-old Andrew McKenna, who failed to appear in Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on charges including recklessly causing serious injury, was “known to frequent“ Geelong.

Angie has launched Geelong Coast Kids magazine, a free glossy tabloid-sized publication full of ideas and advice for local parents. The magazine builds on Geelong Coast Kids’ Facebook page and website to present a “multichannel platform” of digital and print options for readers and advertisers, she explained. “If, like me, you have a young, growing family,
I’m sure you’ll find it a really helpful, fun and convenient collection of information and opportunities to connect with other parents.” Angie said the magazine was available at numerous family-orientated venues across Geelong, the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula, including childcare facilities, kinders, shopping centres, clinics and selected retailers. “Grab a free copy of Geelong Coast Kids, like us on Facebook and check out our website,” Angie said.

A state MP has demanded reinstatement of hourly bus services on the Bellarine Peninsula after last week’s Indy reported residents’ anger at inadequate services between St Leonards and Geelong. Member for Western Victoria Region Simon Ramsay said his office had fielded “numerous complaints” about bus services on the peninsula following a State Government shake-up of timetables across the region.

A lotto luck along our ocean road The Great Ocean Road region has come in sixth on a lotto hotspot list, featuring 10 winners who finished 2015 a combined $11.7 million richer. Gambling giant Tatts made its own list and checked it twice to find out where all the division-one lotto prizes were won in the past 12 months. Geelong accounted for six division-one winning lotto en-
tries during the 12 months to 30 November. The result propelled the hotspot region of the Great Ocean Road as the best performing region outside of the Melbourne suburbs. The region takes in Warrnambool and Portland, where the other four winners were located. Geelong's biggest single win
was a $14 million prize won through Town and Country Lotto in Waurn Ponds. Lotto lightning struck twice at the Drysdale Lotto outlet, home to twin $1 million prizes. Other wins included $1 million wins through both Highton Lotto and Bellpost Lotto and News and a $470,000 prize won through Bellarine Village Lotto Newcomb.
A total of 144 Tatts players across Victoria discovered what it’s like to win division one, equating to more than $200 million in division one prize money won across all Tatts lotto games. The title of 2015 Tatts Lotto Hotspot in Victoria went to Sunbury with four wins totalling more than $4.9 million in first division prize money.
The biggest lotto prize in Victoria in the past 12 months was a massive $20 million Oz Lotto prize won in April in Richmond. Tatts spokeswoman Claire Taylor said while it was great to crunch the numbers and see where the division one wins were in 2015, it did not mean a ticket purchased in those suburbs had a greater chance of
winning than any other ticket. “While some people are superstitious in deciding where they will purchase their entries from, it is important for players to remember that lotto is a random game of chance,” Ms Taylor said. “Regardless of where a ticket is purchased, every number on every ticket has an equal chance of being drawn.”
Dry drinkers a win for cancer Dry July Foundation has announced a grant of $52,000 to Barwon Health’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre. The funds would be used for an art therapy program, an exercise therapy program and for patient chemotherapy diaries, the organisation said. The funds were in addition to the $99,000 already raised for Barwon Health when Dry July participants gave up booze for a month, foundation chief Brett Macdonald said. The foundation awarded more than $675,000 to 26 organisations to support adults living with cancer, he said. “This is the first year we’ve been able to make additional funds available following the fundraising campaign in July,” Mr Macdonald said. “We received a number of interesting applications from a diverse range of cancer support organisations across Australia and were able to distribute grants for many projects across 26 different organisations.” Dry July Foundation assists cancer support organisations with funds to implement projects and programs aimed at improving the wellbeing of adult cancer patients. Each grant was capped at $30,000 but organisations could apply for more than one project, Mr Macdonald said. Dry July Foundation will again raise funds for its grant program in 2016, with applications opening in September. Geelong vehicle modifications specialist VMS Group has won a Premier’s Design Award for building a food truck especially for asylum seekers. The Food Justice Truck was a joint winner in the prestigious awards along with Blackmagic, the world’s smallest studio camera. Believed to be a world first, the Food Justice Truck was an initiative of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. The truck is a zero emissions mobile grocery store which provides fresh local produce to asylum seekers at significant discounts. It was designed by Melbourne creative product
development group CobaltNiche - the designers behind Melbourne’s new E-Class trams - and built by North Geelong’s VMS Group. Workshop manager Darren Owen said the project had been one of the most rewarding ever undertaken by the business. “We do a wide array of projects, from limo to buses, but this one was for a really good cause and we were so pleased to be involved from the start,” Mr Owen said. “Everyone was so enthusiastic about the whole project and the enthusiasm was infectious.” Mr Owen said he had the opportunity to see the Food Justice Truck in action after it was launched in August. “You go out and meet the customers and they

Double Take
HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW: Darryn Lyons, sans mohawk, with kids from his old school, Manifold Heights primary, as they set out on their annual camping ride to Queenscliff.
Has Geelong lost its international icon? No, Double Take’s not alluding to the Cats, Corio Bay or even a mythical Guggenheim Museum. This is an icon of fabulous hue and lustrous structure, noted globally for keeping companion with celebrity and haunting the corridors of power. Yes, Darryn Lyons’s mohawk has disappeared. Worse, it’s been replaced with a tiny ponytail. The mayor turned heads this week with his new-look noggin, absent the hair-do that became something of a trademark for not only himself but perhaps Geelong as well. And he was strangely coy when Double Take inquired of his office whether the change was only temporary. The mayor was “trying something different” came
the short response. A mohawk wasn’t “different”? A road works speed-limit sign spotted on Western Beach Road this week cautioned motorists to slow down to 50km/h. Guess what the normal speed limit in Western Beach Road is. Yep, 50km/h. Everyone’s having a sale in the silly season lead-up to Christmas. After all, it’s when retailers do their best business. A menswear retailer in Westfield Geelong joined the trend on Tuesday with a generous 40 per cent off everything in the store sale, marked ‘Today only’.
But shoppers who missed it don’t have to worry. The today-only sale was back on Wednesday. And probably tomorrow as well… Remember those great law firm names like divorce lawyers Ditcher, Quick and Hyde? Or Screwem, Goode and Hart. How about solicitors Bickers and Bickers? A media release from Australian Security and Investments Commission (ASIC) has involuntarily added to the list. The ASIC said it accepted voluntary undertakings from three registered liquidators after it discovered they failed to comply with some of their statutory obligations. The firm they are all from? Bent and Cougle.
Talkin’ Turkey’s the gift that keeps on giving for St Albans Park’s Knox and Elaine Campbell. After finding all five turkeys in the 11 December edition, they were among this week’s quintet of winning entries alongside Rose Boseley, Lynne Widdup, Geoff Wilson and Caroline Hornibrook. But rather than a delicious addition to their Christmas lunch, Knox and Elaine had a special purpose for their succulent bird. “We’re giving it away to a couple in Ballarat with eight adopted children,” Knox told the Indy over HIDDEN: The turkey to find. the phone. “We got in touch with them yesterday to say we had a turkey for them and they said, yes, they’d be very pleased to accept it.” However, the turkey was delayed for take-off on its mercy dash to Ballarat this week. “We’d be on the way now but our cat’s outside sleeping somewhere and we have to find it first to bring it inside,” Knox confided. Email the names of the businesses whose ads have turkeys to indy@geelongindy.com.au or message entries to facebook.com/GeelongIndy. Entries must include a contact name and phone number. Entries close midday Monday.

Give our common back, say locals By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A 700-signature petition has reignited the battle over Winchelsea Common with the area still fenced off more than a year after a promised clean-up. Organiser Chris Reilly said the petition was filled in just two weeks without any prompting because residents were sick of Surf Coast Shire’s procrastination. “It’s like something out of Monty Python. It’s a joke but it’s not funny,” Mr Reilly said. “We want to embarrass the shire into allowing our kids to use the fun kart track again. “Just about every business in the town, leading figures like the local doctor, local police and residents who live near the common have all signed the petition. “It’s clear the people of Winchelsea want the track reopened yet the shire seems to be going out of its way to close it down.” A gun club and go-karts have historically used Winchelsea Common and there was significant amounts of lead shot still scattered around the Crown land. But Mr Reilly accused the shire of double standards for using part of the contaminated area to store road-building material for a new dual highway through the town. The shire had “overstated the hazard” he said and that large parts of the common were free of lead shot even though most of the parcel had been fenced off. “It seems like there’s a campaign against the track and fun for kids. “The track was originally built by the townspeople and the former Winchelsea shire but no one seems to want to stick their hand up to save it. “Something very wrong is going on in this shire.” Mr Reilly said the shire had sidelined the gokarters while revealing plans for a BMX track instead. “Now that’s a contradiction that has us all

ning to turn the site into a major facility hosting championship events. But nearby residents defeated the plan at VCAT on planning and noise grounds. The Indy reported in June 2008 that the thenDepartment of Sustainability and Environment had secretly ordered the eviction of the Winchelsea gun and kart clubs from the land.

Ken’s a winner for youth By ALANA MITCHELSON Working tirelessly to raise $18,000 for a Geelong Police youth program over three years has won an award for a Leopold man. Ken Flavell has a long history of working with young people, having been a primary school teacher over 50 years at a number of locations across Victoria. Initially working at various rural schools, he later worked in schools at Corio, Norlane and Leopold. “Being in the industry for so many years, you learn a lot about young people and how every child is different,” Ken said. “I worked as an integration teacher when they were first introduced and I worked in that area for a while. “In some ways it fits in with the issue of people being disengaged with schooling and that’s where this program really helps.” Ken won his award for assisting Victoria Police’s Geelong youth program The Kokoda Youth Project. The 10-day Kokoda Track trek involves a number of training sessions to prepare youths for the challenging hike while serving as an avenue for young people to re-engage with their communities. Victoria Police regional youth officer Leading Senior Constable Andrew Brittain said the program provided an opportunity for officers and local business operators to create positive relationships with young people who had “contact with police“. He described Ken as a kind and considerate man with a passion to help young people in his community. “Ken was very interested and obviously had knowledge of the challenges young people are currently facing and volunteered to assist in raising money for the program,” Ldg Sen Const Brittain said. “As a result of Ken raising funds for our program, he has changed three young people’s lives. “He’s also raised awareness in our community
Koalas settling into new home By ALANA MITCHELSON
HONOURED: Ken Flavell with his award. Picture: Lindsay Kelley of the challenges young people deal with by running fund-raisers and speaking with community members. “There are many people who do wonderful things in our community which go unnoticed, so we wanted to give recognition to his work that has benefited many.” Ken first came across the program when trying to help a friend. “A lady at Leopold Uniting Church had a grandson who was slowly going off the rails. She wanted to know what she could do and the truth was there was really nothing I could do, so I re-
ferred her to the youth program and I’ve been involved with them ever since. “What I’ve found is that if you have a good cause people will be willing to support you. I’m lucky that I have good relationships with Leopold Lions Club and the Uniting Church.” Since retiring, Ken has been involved with many charity groups, giving back to the community. His next self-set challenge is to launch a Great Leopold Trivia Night next year, with the hope to gain support from local kindergartens, sports clubs, churches and other community groups.
More than 400 koalas are settling into a new home after their relocation to Great Otway National Park. Overpopulation pressures forced a culling program but a public outcry prompted the relocation of 374 healthy adult koalas and 74 dependent young. Authorities hope the koalas’ new 4300-hectare habitat north of Lorne will address the welfare needs of an “overabundant“ population at Cape Otway ahead of summer. The Lorne site has several species of eucalypt that are favoured forage for the koalas, which were starving after eating out their previous home at Cape Otway. Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning senior biodiversity officer Mandy Watson said 85 koalas deemed unsuitable for relocation were returned to their site of capture. “The welfare of koalas is our first priority and has guided the staged action approach,“ Ms Watson said. “Relocating healthy koalas to the new area before summer gives them a better opportunity of adapting to their new environment and remaining healthy. Otherwise their future at Cape Otway this summer was very bleak. “Fertility control of the adult females and their female back-young over 1kg will help with population control at both Cape Otway and the relocation site into the future. This will protect the coming generations of koalas and their habitats by maintaining koala populations at more sustainable levels." Over four weeks State Government vets, wildlife officers and volunteers captured and health-checked 528 adult koals, with 213 females fertility-controlled.

PREPARE YOUR HOME THIS FIRE SEASON Each property owner should consider their individual fire-risk, especially if you’re near paddocks, grassland or bush. With the grass growth in paddocks and along roadsides this summer there is the potential for severe fire events, particularly in rural areas. Clearing the vegetation surrounding your home will minimise your home’s exposure to radiant heat and direct flame, which will slow the speed and intensity of a fire. Without this space, your home may not survive the fire front. If you are caught out at home when a fire hits, this space around your home may increase you and your family’s chances of survival.
@GREATERGEELONG
Tips for preparing your home include: • Leaf-free gutters - Keep gutters clean and install leaf guards or a leafless guttering system. • Vegetation near the house - Clear vegetation from around the house, keep grass less than 10 centimetres high and remove weeds. • Mulch - Use stones or pebbles or decayed humus mulch, instead of woodchips or dry straw. Keep it moist. • Gardens - Avoid plants with high levels of oils in their leaves such as eucalyptus and tea trees, which are highly flammable. Cut all branches back off the house. • Metal flyscreens - Install metal flyscreens on windows, chimneys, doors and vents to keep out embers.

SPEAKING OUT: Asylum seeker activists rally outside the office of Member for Corio Richard Marles. (Alana Mitchelson)
Refugee activists target MP offices By ALANA MITCHELSON A local refugee group has called for an end to Australia’s “cruel“ policies on refugees so Canberra can “respect and uphold” the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Geelong Refugee Vigil Group put signs along the window sill of federal MP Richard Marles on International Human Rights Day while calling for a “more humane, compassionate policy” on refugees. The group of activists from across the Corangamite and Corio electorates demanded the immediate release of all detained children to community care before Christmas and the closure of all detention centres. Refugee activist Jenny Wills said Australia had a “moral obligation” to observe the UDHR as a signatory to the declaration. She was disappointed parliament failed to consider the issue at its last sitting. “Our vigil condemns the vilification of refugees by politicians and officials and the incarceration of refugees in detention centres, both onshore and offshore.” The vigil group formed after a Combined
Refugee Action Group meeting early last year at Geelong West Town Hall. “The event was packed out,” Ms Wills said. “It’s an indication of the feeling in Geelong about the issue.” Ms Wells said the declaration had special significance to Australians because HV Evatt, Australia’s Attorney General and Minister for External Affairs at the time, was president of the United Nations General Assembly during the late 1940s after World War II when the declaration was adopted. “It was a promotion of peace, equality and justice for all peoples, following the carnage and horrors of World War II,” she said. “We believe the government has contravened the declaration, especially with the treatment of vulnerable people seeking refuge in Australia. “They have been vilified, demonised, detained and branded illegals by our governments, but not in our names.” The group said it had been gathering outside the offices of Mr Marles and Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson since March last year, alternating sites each week. The group planned to continue its rallies into the new year.

New search for ‘suitable’ MX site A replacement site for the region’s motocross riders remains unfound, almost a year after the search began and days before their existing track closes. The region’s council alliance group, G21, has announced it will seek expressions of interest for land suitable for a new motocross facility. The region’s main motocross site, Barrabool’s McAdam Park, is due to close this month, the Geelong Indy reported in January. Councillors voted
then to spend $50,000 on finding a new site after nearby residents won a long legal and planning battle to close the track. State Government, Motorcycling Australia and Surf Coast Shire had paid over $1.5 million to buy the site a few years earlier. G21 said it would conduct a motocross land suitability assessment to identify potential sites for a regional-level facility to replace McAdam Park. The study would include an expres-
sion of interest process to identify potential privately-owned sites suitable for motocross activities. Geelong council sport and recreation portfolio holder, John Irvine, said City Hall would facilitate the expressions of interest process on behalf of the G21. “The study and expressions of interest process will require potential sites to meet a range of criteria and importantly to find a site which best meets the community’s needs,” Cr Irvine said.
The land suitability assessment and expressions of interest process would evaluate sites based on site size, road access points, nearby residential property boundaries, soil type and terrain. The process allows for the site to be leased, purchased, bequeathed or gifted for use. Expressions of interest submissions close at 2pm on 20 January.

Lara shoppers have gone bananas - literally - over their new Coles, according to its store manager. Trent Butcher identified bananas as the “best seller to date” as the supermarket celebrated its first year of trading. And Coles was bananas about Lara people too, Mr Butcher said, with the store hiring more staff than initially planned. Coles Lara employed an extra 25 workers over the 12 months, now with a total staff of 132. The supermarket had also supported 17 community groups, including Geelong’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre, with over $13,000 in fund-raising for the 12 months, Mr Butcher said. Coles last year announced $100 million plans for five new supermarkets around the region. The stores would create 800 jobs, Coles said. A Torquay store opened earlier this year with a target of 120 staff. Coles has become one of the region’s biggest employers, overtaking companies such as Ford and Alcoa before they wound down operations in Geelong.

time for season Camping fee rises that would have cost campers up to $30,000 in the Geelong region, have been further reduced, the State Government has announced. Fees at more than 500 basic sites were abolished just before Easter and a state-wide review has led to more camping fee reductions in time for summer. Environment Minister and Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville said the changed fees would take effect from 18 December. The fees for camping at 55 mid-level campsites had been reduced from $38.90 to $28 a site in peak season, Ms Neville said. “These changes will ensure Victorians continue to have access to these beautiful places, while making sure that the costs of providing safe, visitor-friendly facilities and services are sustainable and affordable.”
refunded for the reduced fees by Parks Victoria but the bookings will still be honoured. “People do not need to contact Parks Victoria, refunds will be processed for everyone who has a booking.” Ms Neville said fees applied only at 116 camping grounds out of 680 sites in 133 parks across the state. “We have some of the best parks in the country and we will continue to make sure they are accessible and affordable. “We asked Parks Victoria to review all other camping options to make sure we are getting the balance right between affordable holidays and funding for new facilities. “It’s important Victorian families can have an affordable holiday and get a chance to experience Victoria’s amazing parks.”
FEES CUT: Bellarine MP Lisa Neville. Ms Neville said the change would affect 48 campgrounds around the state, including some popular areas along the Surf Coast and in the Otways National Park. Parks Victoria would immediately begin to process refunds for the affected campgrounds, which would continue into 2016, she said. “Customers who have booked to stay from 18 December 2015 will be automatically

Union, council in fight on sacking By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
ON THE ROAD: Market Square Shopping Centre’s Sarla Holmes presents the key to a new car to Ocean Grove's Natasha Birmingham. The central Geelong centre gave away the Ford Fiesta as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations.
The sacking of a road worker has left City Hall and the Australian Services Union (ASU) at loggerheads. ASU branch co-ordinator Billy King said the union member was also an elected health and safety representative at City of Greater Geelong (COGG). Mr King said the City terminated the member’s employment for reacting to a motorist’s unsafe and unlawful driving, which endangered the worker and his crew. The union was concerned the City was “targeting” workers in “a pattern of behaviour” when they raised concerns around occupational health and safety issues, Mr King said. “Based on the witness statements provided to the ASU by COGG, all the witnesses verify that the driver was breaking the law and putting workers in danger,” he said. “It has been alleged that our member swore on two occasions but, given the circumstances, it’s not excessive and does not warrant termination. “The fact that he was protecting himself and others by gesturing and raising his voice to a dangerous driver does not support the conclusions reached by COGG that he was deliberately verbally abusing a member of the public and does not form a sound basis on which to terminate his employment. “Workers were forced to perform duties in the Brougham Street tunnel without a traffic management plan and the supervisor responsible didn’t even attend to see if it was safe to perform the work. “The very next week the job was done again while our member was stood aside. This time, four vehicles crossed double lines and put

workers in danger. “We ask what action has been taken against the manager and team leader for allowing this situation to continue. “The ASU is extremely disappointed and at a loss that City CEO Kelvin Spiller failed to meet with the ASU as requested to discuss the (situation) before any final decision was made on his employment. “The ASU demands that our member be reinstated and that the CEO meet with us to hear our concerns. “We hope that the recent announcement of a State Government investigation will bring these sorts of unfair decisions to light.” Mr Spiller said the City did not disclose details of employee matters in the interests of privacy. “However, a decision to terminate any employee is not taken lightly and is only made after a rigorous process and in accordance with our policies, including our employee code of conduct,” Mr Spiller said. “This is not a safety issue - it is an employee conduct issue.” Mr Spiller said the City’s employees were encouraged to raise safety concerns. A recent employee survey found that 87 per cent of respondents agreed they were encouraged to report safety and health issues and injuries, he said. The City Hall made national headlines in 2009 when it sacked two workers who accepted free steak sandwiches from Leopold Sportsman’s Club after filling in potholes in its car park during their lunchbreak. The pair were later reinstated, although one of the men was sacked again in 2013 for allegedly threatening a co-worker.

Letters Andrews misleads commuters The Western Distributor (Indy, 10 December), which replaced the scrapped West Gate Distributor that Daniel Andrews took to the election, is a pale imitation of the western section of East West Link and will deliver far fewer benefits, particularly for Geelong commuters. The claimed 6000 trucks it will remove from the West Gate Bridge are just three per cent of the 200,000 vehicles that use it daily. East West Link would have provided capacity for 100,000 vehicles a day, allowing a 50 per cent reduction of traffic on the bridge. Extending Transurban’s tolling contracts by 10 to 12 years means Victorian motorists will pay for the project for decades and their frustrations will continue indefinitely. Before the election Mr Andrews promised Victorians would pay no compensation when he tore up the East West Link contract but now the Auditor-General estimates we will pay $1.1 billion. If Mr Andrews told Victorians before the election it would cost $1.1 billion he would not be Premier. The $1.1 billion could have built a new Royal Children’s Hospital or 91 primary schools or around 80 24-hour police stations. Now Mr Andrews expects the Turnbull Government to give him another $1 billion to build the Western Distributor – a project Labor did not take to the election and which remains unfunded. Before the election he said: “There’ll be no compensation paid because these arrangements are not valid, they’re not worth the paper they are written on.” Mr Andrews misled all Victorians. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria Region
Capital idea for city’s Christmas As much as I love Geelong, led by the flamboyant and enthusiastic mayor; I have to say it is not the Christmas capital of Australia. In my experience, that accolade must go to Loxton, South Australia. The local people there all co-operate to produce a wonderful Christmas festival from late November to New Year’s Eve. All community groups are involved, including churches, schools, businesses and service clubs. During the day visitors can admire all the decorated homes and gardens, craft displays, a themed Christmas tree exhibition and unique carol presentations. Then in the evening an extensive magical wonderland lights up the darkness with all aspects of Christmas, from the nativity to Santa’s workshop plus reindeer, snowmen, elves and gingerbread houses. This venture unites the townspeople and strengthens the camaraderie among them. We met so many friendly and welcoming locals spreading the peace and goodwill of Christmas. It certainly boosts tourism numbers and benefits hospitality and accommodation businesses. If readers are in South Australia during December they will find Loxton worth visiting. Perhaps Geelong should send a delegation to discover some ideas that could be adapted to compliment the floating tree and the illuminated City Hall. Then the City by the Bay might well become the Christmas capital of Victoria. Melva Stott Anglesea
‘BAD PLANNING’: Seaweed piled up in front of Point Richards’ upgraded boat ramp.
Bridges built but disaster created The story headlined ‘Body builds bridges after sacking’ (Indy, 10 December) told of Environment Minister Lisa Neville praising Bellarine Bayside Committee of Management for making a “greater investment” in improving the northern Bellarine Peninsula’s foreshore amenities. As a long-term resident, it is heartening to see genuine concern and effort finally going into amenities for the benefit of residents rather than continued concentration on the caravan parks to the neglect of the environment. But what of the minister’s media release in 2010 when she announced “the newly redeveloped boat-launching facility at Point Richards as a great boost for the region, jointly funded by the State Government plus a significant investment by Bellarine Bayside”. Rather than a boost, the facility has created an environmental disaster, at huge cost in taxpayer funds, due to poor planning. It also costs substantial additional maintenance just to keep it free of sand and seaweed to remain usable. Will we ever hear, after five years of public concerns being ignored, what will be done to correct this model of ineptitude? How much money has been poured into the sea? What will be done to restore the lost foreshore and fencing; to restore the broken, potholed car park; to clean up the broken concrete kerbing lying on the beach for years; to fix the mess carelessly created by the so-called managers? Bellarine Bayside, despite the latest sacking of its committee and replacement of numerous CEOs, still has a long way to go to restore community confidence. Peter Cowden Clifton Springs
Reformation begins with education We all are seeking answers to the problem of Islamic terrorism. Some believe marches in the streets will coerce terrorists into submission with a ‘we-are-biggerthan-you mentality. The leaders of nations also have hope in force; that more bombs and rockets will eventually win the peace. Rudyard Kipling, in his yearly remembered poem Lest We Forget, warned the Empire it should not put faith in “reeking tube and iron shard”. His good advice applies today. Our imprecise bombing policy is giving ISIS opportunity to advertise the child deaths that will surely result. This might bring even more recruits to their cause; soldiers who love death, believing they fight the infidels, and that an entrance to

paradise awaits the martyr and his family, a belief founded in the words of the Koran. This belief exists within the Muslim faith, the youth of which here also seek death and future glory. An answer to the crisis in Australia could come from moderate leaders in Islam, by teaching that the killing of innocent people will bring an eternity in the fires of hell, not in paradise. We all financially support Islamic schools in our community. They are established to enable the teaching of their faith. Their curriculum should be examined, made public and clearly designed to be in the interest of building peace, here and worldwide. Pastor Frank Lowry Aberdeen Street Baptist Church
Beautiful theory’s still wrong Ray Black (Letters, 11 December) said I was wrong (Letters, 4 December), don’t know science and that newspapers should ban anyone who dares challenge the church of global warming. Mr Black also said: “Earth firstly moves slightly closer to the Sun and temperature does indeed rise first but only about 1C. But the rise is sufficient to cause huge volumes of CO2 to migrate from oceans into the atmosphere and raise Earth’s temperature another 5C or so”. If this is correct then ice cores would clearly show the CO2-lag changing to CO2 leading temperatures after 1C or so and it should also apply for cooling cycles. But it doesn’t. Ice cores show CO2 changing from 180ppm to 280ppm of the atmosphere and a corresponding temperature change around 8C. If CO2 had caused most of this temperature change then CO2-temperature sensitivity would be far greater than even the IPCC’s highest estimates. By comparison, CO2 has changed from 280ppm to 400ppm in the past 250 years but the temperature change has been only about 1C. Richard P Feynman said: “It doesn’t matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn’t matter how smart you are, if it doesn’t agree with the experiment, it’s wrong“. Peter Rees Bell Park
Elite’s dangerous game Ray Black again attacked the Geelong Indy for having the temerity to publish dissenting views on global warming. People like Dr Black, who claim to have science on their side, want to stifle open discussion. The truth is that the notion CO2 is the principal driver of global warming needs further investigation because there has been no warming now for 18 years. It’s a classic case of so-called experts, the elites, seeking to censure any voice that raises legitimate concerns about claims concerning CO2’s effect on climate. Dr Black is typical of many who oppose climate sceptics. They play a dangerous game. A democracy, indeed scientific endeavour, can only work when dissenting voices are allowed to be heard, if only to ‘keep the bastards honest’. My challenge to Dr Black still remains open. If he is right and sceptics like me are wrong, why does he run away from an open debate? Alan Barron Grovedale

FINALLY FRIDAY
Felicia’s sweet music for festival By ALANA MITCHELSON Blues performer Sweet Felicia is broadening her horizons, taking on a Bachelor of Arts as a mature aged student while simultaneously pursuing her music career. Exploring her interests in painting and creative writing, which has stemmed from songwriting, the East Geelong singer and bassist aims to one day write her life story. Planning to detail a time when life was not so sweet, she hopes to provide a voice for other women. “It’s amazing for me. I’d never dreamt I’d ever get to university,” Felicia told the Indy. “Music has seriously helped me get through difficult times and I think one day I’d like to tell my story.” In early January Felicia will fly to Stuttgart to further her studies in art history. Her musicianship has taken her to Germany previously, as well as Poland and the Netherlands, but she said the highlight of her career so far was meeting legendary American blues singer BB King. “I felt like I was totally in the presence of royalty,” Felicia reminisced. “His graciousness, kindness and enthusiasm for music and us as a band was so heart-warming. He had a good sense of humour too.” Sweet Felicia, who regularly plays with her band, the Honeytones, has reaped much international recognition. She was a semi-finalist at a 2010 International Blues Challenge
Sweet Felicia belts out a song with the Honeytones.
in Memphis and won Victorian Blues Performer of the Year in 2011. She has even performed at Schlos Tremmsbuttel, a beautiful German castle. In a “very high honour”, she was chosen to play exclusively for 150 bankers who were music festival sponsors. But her success has not come without a fight. Being a female bassist was regarded as a novely when she first cut her teeth in the music industry, Felicia said. “I felt like I was often seen as a bit of fluff in the band; just something pretty to look at instead of being seen for my talent. It made me work harder and fight my battles or, rather, to pick my battles. “Still now, in the recording studio I consistently feel like I have to fight for what instruments I believe are producing the best sound for a track. “I’ve even had sound guys adjust the way I’ve set up my amp on stage before a show. It’s insulting.” Felicia said she was concerned about her perception of a downturn in people attending live gigs. “If people don’t go out to see music live, we’re going to lose it. “I’d really like to see more people supporting the local live music scene. People might not realise it, but it means so much.” Sweet Felicia and the Honeytones play Geelong’s Motor City Music Festival on 12 March.

SCENERY: Arthur Streeton’s Land of the Golden Fleece, 1926, on loan from the National Gallery of Australia for exhibition in Geelong.
Mt Duneed’s Streeton for exhibition The works of a Mount Duneed-born painter who became one of Australia’s greatest artists will be Geelong Gallery’s major exhibition for 2016. The gallery announced it would host Land of the Golden Fleece - Arthur Streeton in the Western District from 27 February to 13 June. “Historically, Geelong has been cited as a gateway to the Western District, so the focus of this exhibition is a natural project for the gallery and one that will be immensely popular with specialist and non-specialist audiences alike,” said the gallery’s director, Geoffrey Edwards. “The fact of Streeton’s birthplace being at nearby Mt Duneed underscores the relevance of this exhibition for Geelong and Victorian audiences all told.” The exhibition would focus on Arthur Streeton’s landscape paintings of Victoria’s Western District and associated coastal vistas from 1920 to 1932 and following his return from an extended period in Europe, the gallery said. Some paintings would be familiar to Streeton
fans but collectively the exhibition would be a “revelation” for patrons. The exhibition would feature scenery from Lorne, Port Campbell, Dunkeld, Halls Gap and the Grampians. The gallery had a couple of Streeton paintings in its own collection but sourced others from national and state galleries as well as from “a number” of private collections. Streeton was born at Mount Duneed in 1867 before coming to prominence alongside fellow Australian Impressionist painters including Frederick McCubbin, Tom Roberts and Charles Conder in 1889’s 9 × 5 Impressions exhibition. In 1891 Streeton’s Golden Summer, Eaglemont was exhibited at London’s Royal Academy of Arts to widespread acclaim. He lived in London between 1897 and 1923, visiting France and Italy while also making return trips to Australia for successful exhibitions. Streeton continued painting after returning permanently to Australia in 1923. He died on 1 September 1943.

FINALLY FRIDAY
Brand’s Outlaws on road to Corio By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IT’S the playlist Adam Brand and his mates would have selected if they were taking a weekend road trip to their favourite fishing spot. But instead the award-winning country music star and his new “supergroup” will be playing and singing their favourites on stages around the nation. Adam Brand and the Outlaws is perhaps Australia’s first country music supergroup, even though the man himself said it’s just a group of mates. “Or maybe you could call us a bunch of ragbags,” Brand joked to the Geelong Indy. The 12 times Golden Guitar winner and multi-ARIA award nominee will be joined by his Outlaws Drew McAlister, Travis Collins, Matt Cornell and Mike Carr. All five have played with
each other “at some stage” but never with all of them together. Song selection was easy. “It’s just our own road playlist, all of our favourite songs,” Brand said. The big problem was getting everyone in the same place at the same time. “We’re all great mates and we’ve been talking about this for 10 years but everyone is always busy doing their own thing. “About a year ago, I rang them all and said ‘we are going to do this’. It was so far out, it gave everyone time to organise breaks from their own recording and touring.” The unique proposal was one of the great attractions, Brand said. “We are mates so we like doing things together but this is a bit different and we are all keen to find out how it goes because it is so unique.
“Going on the road for two months, you just don’t know what’s going to happen. “We do know we want to promote a great party atmosphere and have a couple of hours of fun on stage. “A break is as good as a holiday and who knows what could spark off with other ideas that help our own careers.” One thing is certain, there’s no lack of experience, with the Outlaws between them boasting more than 10,000 gigs. “We want to make the most of it because, who knows, it may take another 10 years to get it together again,” Brand said. The outfit’s debut self-titled album is due for release in January to coincide with the Tamworth Country Music Festival and the start of its national tour. Adam Brand and the Outlaws play Corio’s Gateway Hotel on 29 January.

What’sat on
Despite rumours of unconfirmed property developments in the Geelong CBD, it’s definitely business as usual at the Carlton Hotel. Co-owner John Mole said the Carlton Hotel appeals to all ages. While unassuming on the outside, the interior represents the charm of the art deco era. Timber panelling, open fireplaces and sweeping ceilings all contribute to a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Gallery Lounge is a new social meeting hub and designed for casual dining with family and friends. A feature of the lounge is the resin art booths and display of a local artist’s seascape paintings. With three different sized function areas, there is a room to suit every occasion. The Carlton is flexible to cater for events that require large sit-down meals, live bands, 18th birthday parties, business conventions or more intimate business lunches. “Once you walk in, you’re quite removed from the street,” Mr Mole said. “And there’s a very casual, relaxed atmosphere. It kind of seals you off from the rest of the world.”
Carlton Hotel’s award-winning restaurant will have a new menu ready for summer. Executive chef and co-owner Marty Bayliss said there will be more seafood options, lighter meals and a variety of fresh salads. Current favourite dishes include the ovenbaked crispy skin salmon, beef rib-eye with steakhouse chips, prime eye fillet with garlic prawns and pesto potato gnocchi. “I’ve been in the industry for 35 years and I’ve always worked in Geelong. “We use as many local meats and as much local produce as possible,” Mr Bayliss said. Mr Mole stressed how fortunate they were to be surrounded by beautiful wineries. “We have mostly local wines on our extensive wine list, including Oakdene, Scotchsman Hill and Swan Bay,” he said. Carlton Hotel has a weekly Wednesday parmi night and provides lunch discounts to Geelong CBD workers, with six choices at $13 each. For event bookings, contact hotel manager Melissa on 5229 1954.

Friends join forces for exhibition By ALANA MITCHELSON Local watercolour artists and close friends Priscilla Fenton and Judy Cohn are showcasing their wildlife and landscape works in the pair’s first joint exhibition, Art x Two. Cohn’s detailed wildlife artworks complement Fenton’s colourful images of marine and beach scenes. Fenton, of Highton, said she began her paintings while sitting outside and by taking in the view. She then took a photo to capture the scene before the lighting and shadowing changes. Barwon River, Point Lonsdale and Anglesea were especially inspiring locations for her realist impressionism style, she said. “When I was young, my family would often go to Point Roadknight and I have a real connection with it. “It was always nice and quiet. I have many special childhood memories from the time I spent there. “I decided to paint the sun’s glow on the Roadknight cliff face. It’s so beautiful.” Fenton undertook a group painting expedition in January to picturesque locations across Tasmania which resulted in 12 large paintings that had already sold, she said.

COMFORT, STYLE & VALUE
While she taught textiles as a secondary school art teacher for 25 years, Fenton said she only decided to learn how to paint watercolour after retiring. It was only with some encouragement from her friend Cohn, who lives at Ceres, that she began exhibiting and selling works, which had once been purely a hobby. Between the two of them, the women have claimed more than 10 awards including competitions at Geelong Show, Golden Plains, Anglesea Art Show, Werribee Art Show and Birregurra Art Show. “We’re opposites,” Fenton said. “Judy paints animals whereas I paint more scenic snapshots. I think that’s why we thought it would really work to hold an exhibition together.” Cohn, a biology teacher, has a deep appreciation for the beauty of the natural world and its wildlife, with her works focusing especially on birdlife. Their work will be on show until 10 January at South Geelong’s Little Creatures Brewery. The exhibition is open on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10am to 5pm, Wednesday to Friday from 10am to 10pm and on the weekends from 8am to 10pm.

Gary Keleman has given 33 years of his best personal service to city It’s the personal touch that sets Keleman Motors apart. Gary Keleman has been in the business since 1982, so he must be doing something right. His care and attention to detail has enhanced his hard-won reputation in the car repair trade. The personal service includes a drop off and pick up service to the city. Gary is known as a Mazda specialist but his tried and true slogan, ‘Anything on any car’, sums up his approach. “We do all major and minor repairs, including exhaust, brakes, clutches and suspension,” Gary ex-plains. “Plus we do the full range of upgrades and servicing, including air-conditioner re-gassing.” Gary and Mazda go back a long way, including his top qualifications in the repair and servicing of the famous rotary engine. Gary uses only genuine parts in his new-car re-pair and servicing work. “This way our customers can be sure their factory warranties are not affected.” He says customers should be able to receive deal-er level service without paying dealer level prices. “We’re always happy to give a quote so the customer knows exactly what they are up for,” he says. Gary’s workshop boasts the latest in diagnostic and scanner equipment. “We’re proud of the quality of all work we under-take and our competitive rates.” Keleman Motors is at shop 3, 13 Crown St, South Geelong, phone 5229 9555.

SPORT Bay’s serving up Christmas lunch ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Many anglers spent the past week sourcing their own fresh seafood for Christmas. Clifton Springs and Corio Bay were up to the task, producing snapper, squid, flathead and pike. Justin Burns and Simon Williams fished the bay on Sunday when light wind allowed them to drift at a favourable pace while working soft plastics over sandy drop-offs. Simon boated a well-conditioned rock flathead of 60cm. I fished the north side of the Wilson Spit channel on Sunday morning. After marking bait on the sounder I started casting soft plastics, catching flathead and pinkie snapper to 50cm, mostly in eight metres of water. St Leonards’ deeper water fished well for snapper and gummy sharks. Fresh squid or silver whiting did the trick, especially for anglers who began fishing before daybreak. In closer, whiting really started to fire. The area known as Bourke Street held the most fish. Queenscliff ’s Bell Reef produced reasonable numbers of large squid for land-based anglers venturing out on low tide to suspend artificial jigs under floats. Counterparts drifting slowly in boats also had their fair share, including some bag-limit captures possible. Point Lonsdale Pier provided large Australian salmon to 2.5kg on bait and lure during the last of the incoming tide. Pilchard fillet baits and Sea Iron Pelacus lures worked well. Ric Hedditch and daughter Chloe fished offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads on Sunday. Chloe soon boated a gummy shark which was estimated to be 20kg and the pair dropped another of similar size and also caught three pinkies to 38cm. Anglers spinning from Lorne Pier and rock platforms along the Surf Coast caught salmon to 2kg when the swell was down. Long casts were not always necessary when schooled up salmon moved in close. Freshwater anglers again found Wurdee Boluc Reservoir worth the time. Brown trout over 2kg were landed on mudeyes under floats fished from the main rock wall, with late afternoon prime time as the trout moved in closer to feed on insects. The odd big redfin was also caught following long casts with Fish Arrow soft plastics. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree gave up similarsized brown trout, with shallow-running hardbody lures working at either end of the rowing lanes. Anglers fishing from the bank enjoyed similar results, also taking the odd rainbow trout. Cod dominated reports from Lake Eildon where yellowbelly were also boated. The main rock wall was a top spot with the more-remote arms fishing well for larger fish on spinnerbaits and hard-body lures. The Barwon River produced plenty of redfin to 800g on small hard-body lures fished around the section behind Landy Field. Next week’s warm, calm conditions could be ideal for kingfish offshore with reports of catches beginning. Otherwise, snapper should be present in the deeper sections of the bay while freshwater anglers should try the Barwon River around Geelong or Wurdee Boluc for redfin on lures.

Big task for Cats to earn a little ‘Christmas cheer’ LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club faces a monumental task if it wishes to go into the Christmas break with a win when it attempts to chase down Melbourne’s imposing 6/342. Winning the toss and electing to bowl last week, the Cats’ plans went awry when star fast bowler Dom McGlinchey succumbed to a foot injury after he had bowled 10 overs, adding to a long list of injury woes for the club. On a bright note, Justin McPhee (2/68) returned from injury while Matthew Gunther (2/38) bowled 20 tight overs. While it will be a tough ask to win tomorrow, the side still boasts enough talent to pull off an upset. In the Geelong Cricket Association, a one day round of games is scheduled to finish the first half of the season. In division one, two of the season’s big improvers will battle it out when third placed Lara hosts fourth placed Bell Post Hill. Both teams have taken some big scalps already thus far, with Lara defeating North Geelong last
round, somehow managing to defend just 107 runs, veteran Danny Hughes (5/19) the star. Bell Post Hill hasn’t lost since round one and has also knocked off North Geelong as well as reigning premier St Josephs, which shows it has done it the hard way and deserves its spot on the ladder. Still, for the loser of this game, it’s back to the field while the winner will enjoy a nice break knowing it is well placed to attack the run into finals. SOUTH BARWON v Murgheboluc, Leopold v GROVEDALE, Geelong City v NORTH GEELONG, Newtown & Chilwell v GEELONG WEST, LARA v Bell Post Hill, EAST BELMONT v St Josephs In division two, Marshall takes on St Albans Breakwater at home in a game that both sides will be desperate to win. The Bears have been very solid in their premiership defence, defeating Torquay outright last week on the back of Shane Skene’s six wickets for the game. For St Albans Breakwater, Jason Murray continues to show why he is one of the best players in the division, hitting 23 with the bat last week
against Manifold Heights before claiming 7/27 with the ball. While the Saints have some talent on their list, Marshall continues to defy the critics and will want to win this to show it belongs at the top. MODEWARRE v Waurn Ponds, HIGHTON v Torquay, Alexander Thomson v THOMSON, Manifold Heights v NEWCOMB AND DISTRICT, BELL PARK v St Peters, MARSHALL v St Albans Breakwater The most critical game in division three appears to be sixth placed Winchelsea hosting seventh placed Meredith. Both sides sit on 18 points, meaning this is a game that could ultimately decide which of these sides plays finals. Winchelsea enjoyed a good win over Inverleigh last week while Meredith lowered its colours to top side Bannockburn and will be keen to bounce back. Winning form is good form and Winchelsea should prove too strong here. CORIO v Guild St Marys, BANNOCKBURN v Teesdale, Corio Bay v LETHBRIDGE, Little River v SHELFORD, Inverleigh bye.
BATTER UP: Bradyn Barker shows his talent with bat and ball.
Young slugger having a ball with Bellarine Bears team In baseball parlance Bradyn Barker is often referred to as a “spark plug". The Barwon Heads youngster loves to play baseball, he loves the action, he wants to hit a home run and he loves to pitch. Bradyn is one of the many new kids at Baycats Baseball starting their journey to the major leagues and following in the footsteps of Geelong’s most famous baseball export, Graeme Lloyd. Bradyn has recently been selected to represent the Baycats as part of its state level Little League Academy team. His team of boys and one girl have now played six games against some of the state’s best junior baseballers.
As one of the younger players he not only holds his own but is excelling in the new tougher competition. Playing with the Bellarine Bears, Braydn is the son of one of the Baycats state league players Chris Barker. Shortstop Chris has a pedigree as a baseballer but more particularly 10 years of service at national level playing softball for Victoria and Australia. Mum Stacey Withan has played many years in Geelong as a top softballer, while granddad Allan Witham has been a stalwart for the Corio Tigers and was a key contributor when the club won its only premiership. Bradyn is a multi-skilled player, having a go at
pitching, catching as well as playing all the defensive positions. He says he loves hitting the most and is looking forward to hitting a home run over the fence. Bradyn, like so many other players from the Bellarine, has a lot of talent. Lloyd, originally from Gnarwarre, was a lefthanded pitcher who won two World Series with the New York Yankees. During his 10-year Major League career, Lloyd played with the Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, and Kansas City Royals in the American League and the Montreal Expos, Florida Marlins and New York Mets in the National League.
