‘They told me to give up’ Woman saved as 4WD burns BY ALANA MITCHELSON

Eight-page liftout guide to holiday fun INSIDE TODAY

Bystanders watched motionless at a distance as Adam Pearse frantically rescued a woman trapped upside down in a mangled, upturned four-wheeldrive about to burst into flames. He was among four locals to receive bravery awards from the Royal Humane Society of Australasia at Melbourne’s Government House this month. Mr Pearse was driving along Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road at Balliang East in October 2012 when the car immediately ahead veered across to the wrong side of the road and collided with a four-wheel-drive towing a boat. Travelling in the 4WD was a woman, her partner and her 18-year-old stepdaughter. The vehicle rolled three times before landing on its roof. The engine was already alight when Mr Pearse arrived first on the scene. He remembered instinctively instructing a nearby farmer to fill a bucket with water as he used a knife to cut the woman free of her seatbelt before dragging her to safety. Three years on, the Corio resident still cannot fathom how other witnesses failed to help. “We had minutes, minutes to help this woman,” Mr Pearse said. “People just stood there and did nothing while this lady was screaming. “I screamed out to them to help me get her out and some of them actually told me to get away from the car; that there was nothing I could do and that I should just wait for emergency services.” But Mr Pearse said the woman would have died if he had done nothing. “I almost got the fire out. “It must have been a matter of seconds, and I’m talking seconds, before the whole thing was ablaze. “You’re not prepared to see that sort of stuff. I felt like I couldn’t breathe because of all the smoke. Continued page 2

“It was really scary.” Mr Pearse was treated in hospital for smoke inhalation and was unable to talk for a fortnight. Within 10 days the trauma of the incident led him to buy a small fire extinguisher, which now lives in the boot of his car; a simple addition that he claims would have made “a world of difference”. Mr Pearse applied for nine free counselling sessions at the time of the incident but was told the paperwork process would have taken about six months. He said he was “disappointed” with the system because he had been unable to talk about the incident until now. Mr Pearse has remained in close contact with the survivor of the accident, Robyn, who lost two family members in the crash. She nominated him for a Silver medal and Certificate of Merit. They pair speak over the phone every week. Mr Pearse said he hoped his acceptance of the award would bring some comfort and closure for Robyn. Other award recipients included Ashok Hans who in December 2012 rescued a “badly injured” driver from a crashed and burning car at Portarlington. A speeding motorist had collided into the side of another car. Mr Hans and another man, who had driven past, saw the crashed car in a ditch against trees and bushes on a large slope, with smoke coming from the engine. The car doors were jammed, so a piece of broken drainage pipe was used to break the window. Both men reached into the car and lifted the driver out moments before the car exploded and was engulfed in flames. Craig Oxley and David Robertson, of Newcomb, earned a Certificate of Merit for rescuing an elderly man from his burning home in the wee hours of 29 April, 2013. Mr Robertson used a rock to smash a window and walked through the house before searching through thick smoke to locate the man who sat unresponsive on the bedroom floor. Both Mr Robertson and Mr Oxley dragged him out the front door and to the nature strip so he could be taken to hospital.

Tiny cannon blasts record By ALANA MITCHELSON The world’s smallest working cannon has put a Herne Hill man in the Guinness World Records. Smaller than a corn kernel, Marcus Hull’s scale-model cannon fires a cannonball a quarter the size of a pen’s ballpoint. The projectile can pierce kitchen foil from 15cm. The trained graphic designer and visual artist spent two years researching cannons to build his oak and bronze artillery piece, measuring 6.88mm by 4.34mm by 2.8mm. Mr Hull had been designing tokens for a new war board game when friends said they were impressed by the detail in his small model of a cannon. “So I went away and made one half the size to prove that I could make one even smaller, which blew their minds, and someone asked whether I’d thought about trying for a world record.” In 2013 he approached Guinness

HAVING A BLAST: New world record-holder Marcus Hull and his working miniature cannon on a fingertip. headquarters, which sent him rules and guidelines, including the criteria for the record. “It was tricky,“ Mr Hull said. “The process was a lot more involved than what I thought. “The mechanics of the cannon itself wasn’t the hard part, the most

difficult thing was making the barrel.“ Mr Hull read Guinness World Record books as a child, thinking how impossible each listed feat seemed. “All of them seemed so far beyond the achievable. I thought about my name and memory being in the

records and thought to myself, ‘Why not’. “Over the two years, though, I think it did end up becoming a bit of an obsession.“ Earlier this year Mr Hull broke an American pre-existing record, coincidentally on the fourth of July. A structural engineer verified Mr Hull’s record as part of his evidence pack for Guinness. The short-sighted designer had never realised his dexterity and eye for intricate designs until he took on the cannon project. “Friends asked me how I could make things so tiny without using a magnifying glass or a microscope. They just thought it was really weird. “I think I surprised myself, really.“ A newfound fascination with all things miniscule has prompted Mr Hull to pursue miniature sculpture art to find out where his talent takes him. A link to video of the cannon is available with Mr Hull’s story at geelongindy.com.au.

‘Bolder’ festival A “bigger, better, bolder” Lorne Film Festival will return next year after the success of November’s event, according to event director Darren Markey. The 2015 festival had over 1100 admissions at nine films and almost 200 patrons attended the opening night party, he said.

Golf record A golfing marathon at 13th Beach has “smashed the record yet again” for entries, according to Karingal Foundation. A spokesperson said 40 players had entered for next months’ Hundred Hole Hike, now “the biggest event of its kind in the world”.

Timely works Upgrades of the Great Ocean Road at Anglesea and Lorne have finished just in time for peak tourist season, Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson has announced. The three kilometres of roadworks at Anglesea and Lorne would help up to 22,000 vehicles move along the iconic route daily this summer, she said.

Top volunteer Geelong’s Elizabeth Hopkin has earned a seat on the board of Volunteering Victoria. Ms Hopkin will join the peak body after 10 years’ experience in volunteering, including a role as volunteer coordinator at UnitingCare Geelong since 2011.

Trail finished The final stage of an 18km bicycling and walking trail around Corio and Norlane has opened at North Shore’s Moorpanyal Park. City Hall said the trail, named KarndoorKapa, cost $1.9 million for “essential infrastructure and other items including some outstanding public artworks”.

SKIN CARE: Cancer After Care’s Joyce Johnson, Libby Bate with radiation therapist Paul Foulstone and the new machine. Picture: Linsday Kelley

New machine helps skin cancer victims avoid scarring By ALANA MITCHELSON A new radiotherapy machine is saving Geelong skin cancer victims from surgery thanks to the fundraising efforts of volunteers. Cancer After Care Group Geelong raised $218,000 to buy the state-of-the-art technology for Andrew Love Cancer Centre. The machine has performed 80 treatments for 14 patients in the past three months. Geelong hospital previously lacked technology to precisely treat localised skin cancers - often in delicate areas such as the nose, eyes, ears and mouth - without requiring surgery. The technology uses low-energy X-rays in a focused beam concentrated on the affected area. The radiation penetrates only 2mm to 5mm deep depending on the dose. The less-invasive procedure reduces scarring

because it avoids deeper tissues and also minimises damage to surrounding healthy cells. Andrew Love radiation therapist Paul Foulstone said the equipment was previously inaccessible to the centre due to its high cost. “The only similar machine in Geelong was an old device used by a private specialist that was due to be withdrawn from service and was not going to be replaced,” he said. “Equipment like this becomes important when surgery isn’t an option. For example, the patient may be elderly or have a bleeding problem. “Previously what we call local skin cancers that fall under this scenario were untreatable here. We had to refer people to Melbourne. The hospital in Ballarat might have been the closest machine.” Mr Foulstone said demand for the treatment was high, with Ballarat treating about 500 patients a year.

“It’s an option that many people may not know about, so we want to spread the word that patients can now be treated locally.” Mr Foulstone said the machine would help his team treat facial cancers that could be difficult to remove surgically without significant scarring. “This technology pinpoints the exact area affected. It’s instantaneous, the paient doesn’t feel anything and the only side effects are a little bit of burning.” Cancer After Care Group president Libby Bate said the organisation had been accumulating the money over many years. “We were actually saving for a brachytherapy machine worth over $1 million but by the time we’d raised the funds after 10 years of hard work the technology had been superseded, so we suddenly had all these funds for alternative ways we could help cancer patients in the community. ”

Over 97,000 patrons visited Drysdale’s Potato Shed as it hosted 76 performing arts events in 2014/2015, a report to Geelong’s council has revealed. The shed also attracted 7000 patrons to a family run day and operated at close to full capacity seven days a week, the report said.

See you in 2016! The Geelong Indy wishes its readers and advertisers a merry Christmas and a happy new year as Geelong’s favourite newspaper goes on a short break. The first edition of the Indy in 2016 will be out on 15 January. Managing editor Tony Galpin thanked the community for its support in 2015. “It was a big year for the paper, especially with the move to the new masthead and the accompanying redesign,” Mr Galpin said. “We’re looking forward to an even bigger 2016, so stay safe and we’ll see you next year.”

Injuries increase on Barwon roads The greatest number of country road-accident injury claims came from the Barwon western region in 2013/2014, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has revealed. The region also accounted for the biggest increase in injuries between 2008/09 and 2013/14, from 987 to 1223. The annual claims statistics report for 2014/2015 provides a snapshot of people injured in that financial year in comparison to the previous five years, including types of injury and where people live. Overall, claims were up 92 compared to the previous financial year, with the increase mainly in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal injuries. TAC chief Joe Calafiore said injuries increased across all country regions. The data showed far too many Victorians were still being injured on country roads, he said. Mr Calafiore called the figures a stark reminder of why the TAC had adopted the Towards Zero vision of no deaths or serious injuries on Victorian roads. “Each of these claim numbers has a story behind it, of a person who has been injured in road trauma or the family of a person who has lost a loved one,“ Mr Calafiore said. “Every night spent in hospital represents a deeper story, of the rehabilitation journey that person may undergo and the long term impact of their injury on them and their family. We all have a part to play in Victoria’s Towards Zero vision.” IROBOT: The Brainary’s Jonathan Kingsley, second from left, with Swinburne’s Professor Leon Sterling, PhD student Felip Marti and Dr Chris McCarthy with NAO, the humanoid robot.

Geelong robots help kids conquer autism, injuries By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A small Geelong father and son family business is the brains behind the innovative use of robotics in children’s rehabilitation. The Brainary kick-started the concept of using a humanoid robot to help young Victorians recover from major illnesses and injuries in a world-first trial at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Co-founder Jonathan Kingsley said the project built on work the business had already done with assistive technology and children on the autism spectrum. The humanoid robot, NAO (pronounced Now) is a 58 centimetre tall, friendly, cute robot that moves, recognises and hears people and talks. Mr Kingsley said NAO had revolutionary applications for healthcare, rehabilitation and special education. “NAO helps break down communication barriers, especially for children on the autism spectrum, because it can simplify complex social behaviours,” he said. “With the rehabilitation project we’ve taken it a step further, working with Swinburne University, TAC and the Royal Children’s Hospital.”

HEALER: NAO takes Miles, 9, through his rehabilitation from injury. Experts from Swinburne University worked with rehabilitation therapists from the Royal Children’s Hospital to program NAO to deliver tailored rehabilitation programs to young patients. The project was funded by a $25,000 Transport Accident Commission grant. NAO is being trialled on children with conditions ranging from brain and spinal cord injury to cerebral palsy. It has found that children are better motivated and engaged with their rehabilitation

programs, primarily physiotherapy, when delivered by the talking robot. Mr Kingsley said The Brainary’s work with NAO showed it could be programmed to do just about anything. “So we wondered how to get the robot engaged with motor accident victims,” he said. “NAO performs exactly the same each time and it doesn’t get bored or tired. “It’s great for a Geelong-based company to be leading the way with cutting-edge technology. Mr Kingsley said Swinburne University would carry out further research into the benefits of the program. “Anecdotally the kids are really receptive to the robot and it helps to motivate them and to improve the quality of the rehabilitation. “It’s partly the novelty but it’s also because it is amazing, it’s non-invasive and non-threatening, because NAO is smaller than most kids. “Some of the programming is based on game play, engaging kids to have fun while doing rehabilitation. It turns repetitive and sometime boring exercises into something that’s fun.”

10,000 new jobs cut jobless ranks Unemployment in the Geelong region fell 3.6 per cent after the creation of almost 10,000 new jobs, according to latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures. State Government seized on the figures to trumpet its economic management credentials. The ABS figures showed that Victoria’s regional unemployment rate fell from 6.6 to 5.6 per cent, below the national average of 6.1 per cent. Treasurer Tim Pallas said more always had to be done but the regional job figures were encouraging. “The news is further evidence of Victoria’s growing economic momentum,” Mr Pallas said. The figures coincided with latest ABS population data confirming Victoria as a leading destination for overseas and interstate migration, he said. Victoria’s population was now almost six million people, just short of a quarter of the nation’s entire population. “Victoria is the fastest growing state in Australia, while consumer confidence in Victoria is the strongest in the nation,“ Mr Pallas said. “All the economic indicators are reinforcing the Andrews Government’s determined efforts to build business and jobs momentum, and to create opportunities for Victorians to share. “People go where the jobs are. It’s no coincidence that Victoria’s population is surging in line with its economy. “People have every right to have confidence in Victoria again. The Andrews Labor Government will continue to press ahead with its agenda to ensure Victoria is once again the leading state in Australia.”

Girl, 14, on streets, mum ‘broken’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A 14-year-old girl vulnerable to alcohol and drug abuse has been allowed to live on the streets with an older man known to police, the girl’s mother claims. The mother, whom the Geelong Indy cannot name to protect the privacy of her daughter, said she was at breaking point in trying to redirect her daughter’s life. “I’m desperate,” she said. “It’s just not working and my daughter is get-

ting lost in the meantime. Each time it happens she’s harder to reach.” The mother said she was tipped over the edge during an alcohol-related incident that hospitalised her daughter. “I was putting her into my car while she was in a coma.” The girl could not be detained at hospital and was back on the streets within hours, the mother said. She felt the level of risk to her daughter was sufficient for the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to intervene.

But the Indy was advised this level of help was unavailable under the Victorian Children, Youth and Families Act 2005. “It’s a tragic story,” the mother said. “I’m afraid to say it is only the tip of the iceberg.” The mother said police could become involved once a missing person’s report was made but once they sighted her daughter she was no longer classed as missing. “I strongly believe the way the couch-surfing children are handled needs strong review. “The situation was so stressful that I had a

meltdown at one stage. I’ve managed to pick myself up and I’ve reduced my hours at work.” A DHHS spokesman said young people living in care were some of the most vulnerable in the community. “They often present with complex and challenging behaviours due to trauma and neglect,” he said. “While privacy legislation prevents any comment regarding individual cases, the department’s policy is to always act in the best interests of children in its care.”

Artefacts buried as Lara school marks 150 milestone Calls to help kids left in cars rising

Lara Lake Primary School has laid a time capsule as part of celebrations to mark its 150th anniversary. Principal Noel Creece said the school opened in 1865 and had since cared for and educated thousands of students. The time capsule was the culmination of a year of celebrations around the milestone laid on the last day of the academic year near the original steps of the school, Mr Creece said. “Inside the capsule the students placed stories of their current lives, photos and other artefacts.” School council president Kylie Grzybek was on hand to ceremonially place the items into the capsule. Mr Creece said the time capsule would be sealed and buried, with the opening planned for the school’s 200th year in 2065.

Triple zero received 58 calls about children left in hot cars across the Geelong region in the 12 months to 31 August, Ambulance Victoria figures show. The figures were released as Ambulance Victoria reported a big jump in triple zero calls about the issue. The figures prompted a warning from Ambulance Victoria for people not to gamble with their children’s lives. Emergency management director Paul Holman said a 23 per cent increase in calls and 1433 children aged under 13 locked in cars had frustrated paramedics. Another 100 calls reported someone older or a pet locked in a car. Children aged under four made up 88 per cent of calls, while the number of babies aged under 12 months locked in a car increased almost 50 per cent. Nearly half the calls were between December and March. Mr Holman said it was clear that leaving children in a car could prove deadly yet people seemed unable to understand the risks.

GOODWILL GIFT: Mark Furlan and Lucas Taranto with staff and patients at Geelong hospital's children's ward with the teddy bears.

Bear necessities donated for kids stranded in hospital By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Sick children faced with spending the festive season in Geelong hospital have had their days brightened with a beautiful little teddy bear named Eddie. The teddies were donated through the efforts of Calendar Club outlets in Geelong, where purchasers could add $5 to pay for a bear to go to the hospital’s children’s ward. The outlets were among the top sellers of teddy

bears in Australia and New Zealand. Calendar Club proprietors Mark Furlan and Lucas Taranto said they were pleasantly surprised at how many Geelong people took up the offer without question. Mr Furlan said it was wonderful to see the joy on the faces of the children in the ward when the teddies were delivered. “This was the first year that the Calendar Club teddy bear was donated to a particular charity,” he said.

“Being from Geelong, and having the store in Geelong, we decided to give them to the hospital because it was such a deserving recipient. Children’s ward nurse unit manager Sandra Van Roon said it was great to give the children a teddy to cuddle. “It makes a good distraction for them while they’re in hospital,” she said. “It’s something pleasant to take home and to remember the experience. It’s been lovely the community were so kind to donate the bears.” 1212226-ACM52-15

Falls Festival revellers have been urged to book a date with the TAC’s Vanessa bus as new figures show a rise in Victorian road fatalities involving young people. Thirty-three people aged 16 to 20 have died on Victorian roads, 14 more than in 2014. The Transport Accident Commission expects to administer more than 5000 free breath tests at next week’s festival, near Lorne. TAC’s Samantha Buckis said the double-storey Vanessa bus gave revellers a chance to chill out and enjoy healthy activities between acts while also avoiding the risk of drink-driving. “Everyone needs a mate at a festival to look out for them, give them a drink of water or a coffee when they need it and keep them happy. That’s what Vanessa is all about,” Ms Buckis said. “It’s about young people looking after each other in a fun and welcoming environment and making sure everyone is under the legal blood alcohol limit before they drive home so they get there safely.” Ms Buckis said Vanessa had undergone a facelift since last year’s Falls Festival, with a makeover and fun new activities. Festival patrons were sometimes surprised how high their readings were the morning after as they prepared to travel home, she said. “When they realise that they’re a fair way off being safe to drive, they’re happy to just chill out for a while, have a coffee or a water and wait until they’re under. We always see that as a win.”

PREPARE YOUR HOME THIS FIRE SEASON

WASTE FACILITIES PUBLIC HOLIDAY OPERATING HOURS Public holiday operating hours for the below waste disposal facilities are as follows: Drysdale Resource Recovery Centre & Landfill Boxing Day 8.00am - 4.15pm New Year’s Day Closed

Each property owner should consider their individual fire-risk, especially when near paddocks, grassland or bush. With the grass growth in paddocks and along roadsides this summer, there is the potential for severe fire events, particularly in rural areas.

Geelong Resource Recovery Centre & Transfer Station Boxing Day 7.30am - 4.15pm New Year’s Day Closed Changes to home garbage collection on New Year’s Day apply only to residents who have a Friday collection day. These residents will need to place their bins out on Friday night for collection Saturday 3 January 2016. For more information call the City on 5272 5272.

BLUE – GREEN ALGAE In the interest of public health the City advises that high levels of blue-green algae have been detected in: • Blue Waters Lake, Ocean Grove (Melway ref: 233_K4)

• Seascape Drive Wetland, Indented Heads (Melway ref: 240_G9) The City advises people should avoid contact with the water and should not eat fish caught from the contaminated water. Please avoid pets making contact with the water in these reserves. If skin contact should accidentally occur, wash immediately in fresh water. Contact with blue-green algae can cause skin rashes, eye and ear infections, vomiting and diarrhoea, mouth ulcers, sore throats and asthma symptoms.

Emergency access will be available at all times during the road closure periods. For information on the Bay Cycling Classic, visit www.baycyclingclassic.com.au

Clearing the vegetation surrounding your home will minimise your home’s exposure to radiant heat and direct flame, which will slow the speed and intensity of a fire. Without this space, your home may not survive the fire front. If you are caught out at home when a fire hits, this space around your home may increase you and your family’s chances of survival.

Tips for preparing your home include: • Leaf-free gutters - Keep gutters clean and install leaf guards or a leafless guttering system. • Vegetation near the house - Clear vegetation from around the house, keep grass less than 10 centimetres high and remove weeds. • Mulch - Use stones or pebbles or decayed humus mulch, instead of woodchips or dry straw. Keep it moist. • Gardens - Avoid plants with high levels of oils in their leaves such as eucalyptus and tea trees, which are highly flammable. Cut all branches back off the house. • Metal flyscreens - Install metal flyscreens on windows, chimneys, doors and vents to keep out embers.

If you have any questions, or would like further details, contact the City’s Event Services on 5272 4213 during business hours, or after hours on 5272 5272.

OCEAN GROVE NEW YEARS EVE RESTRICTED ACCESS TO MAIN BEACH The City in conjunction with Barwon Coast and Victoria Police, have a range of plans in place on New Years Eve to ensure that the Main Beach at Ocean Grove is a safe place for residents and visitors. There will be restricted vehicle access to Ocean Grove Main Beach from 5.00pm Thursday 31 December 2015 until 2.00am Friday 1 January 2016.

V

Surf Beach Road will be closed at Barwon Heads Road and Presidents Avenue will be closed at Orton Street.

FRIDAY, JAN 8

These closures will be staffed to allow access for local residents and emergency vehicles only.

Anyone experiencing a reaction should seek medical help. Warning signs have been erected at the affected waterways.

Osborne Street and Baker Street will be closed at Barwon Heads Road and Field Street South will be closed at Orton Street.

For more information call the City on 5272 5272.

For further enquiries call Bellarine Police Station on 5256 2698.

Ripper race feeling the ‘squeeze’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club hopes for a big turnout out at its 36th annual Rip to River Race despite facing a squeeze on facilities. Club President and race director Steve Peatling said the Rip to River was one of the club’s major fundraising activities for the year. “Given the rapid expansion of membership, surf patrol activities and requests for community use of the facility, the club is in need of significant expansion and updating,” Mr Peatling said. “Over the past four years all parties involved in the operation of the Surf Beach complex at Ocean Grove have had ongoing discussions regarding future development of the complex. “We’ve had significant discussions with government and other stakeholders around funding for this development. “At the 2014 state election we received a funding allocation of $2.675 million to the redevelopment. “Work is already well under way, with plans and permits to make this dream a reality over the next two years. “As well as some expansion of the commercial activities within the complex, the new facilities will include better beach patrol administration facilities, first aid facilities, rescue equipment and vehicle storage, expanded office space and a club and community training room facility. “The club is in the final stages of planning with Barwon Coast and looks forward to turning soil on the project sometime in 2016.” Believed to be Australia’s first regularly organised beach run, the inaugural Rip to River in January 1981 ran from Point Lonsdale lighthouse to the mouth of the Barwon River. Legendary Geelong footballer Billy Goggin started the first Rip to River, which has since had a number of celebrities and sports stars compete each year, including local legend Cliff Young who competed in 1984 and Nick DeCastella who won the second race in 1982.

RIPPERS: Past Rip to River winners, at top, Lana McLachlan, Max McLachlan, Xavier Eales and at bottom, Tyrone Cover, Nick Whiteman, Natalie Mensch and James Dalton. Picture: Lindsay Kelley The event’s updated format now includes a 10km walk from Point Lonsdale as well as a 5km run and a 1.4km Ripper Nipper race, both starting from Ocean Grove. As one of the longest-running and most-iconic

events on the Victorian running calendar, the race attracted more than 1500 entrants last year. The club also received a $5000 grant from the Beach Safety Equipment Fund, along with all other surf lifesaving clubs.

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said the $8 million fund would provide about $25,000 over five years to every Surf Life Saving Australia club to buy essential rescue equipment, first aid and medical supplies.

SUMMER HOLIDAY GUIDE

Plenty to see and do this summer Geelong’s magnificent waterfront will be a focus for activities and events for young and old this holiday season. The waterfront will be illuminated nightly between 8.30pm and midnight from Boxing Day until 7 January with a party music theme around Geelong’s famous floating Christmas tree. A free public fireworks display at midnight on New Year’s Eve will celebrate the start of 2016 and say goodbye to 2015 on the waterfront. The waterfront will also host an earlier fireworks display at dusk from 9pm and 9.30pm for children and families. The region will provide most of the seaside locations hosting the 26th running of the prestigious Bay Cycling Classic. The race is recognised as the fastest criterium series in the world and offers a spectacular way to kick start the year, with up to 200 top male and female road sprint cyclists competing from across Australia. Ocean Grove’s well known Tranquillity Fair becomes an alternative oasis in a sea of busyness, offering music, entertainment, crafts, natural therapies and food options. Family entertainment arrives at Geelong’s Botanic Gardens on 2 January when Alice in Wonderland falls through the rabbit hole to Neverland and meets the boy who never grew up, Peter Pan. The Portarlington Mussel Festival is held on the second Saturday in January every year, now attracting around 30,000 people. Initially established to promote the Portarlington Mussel Industry, the festival now boasts a full day of activities including live entertainment, kids’ activities, cooking demonstrations, art and photo exhibitions, classic car displays, food and wine producers, products to try and buy and plenty of mussels. The community festival is run solely by volunteers for the community with just a $2 entry.

Geelong’s New Year’s Eve fireworks is a family favourite.

SUMMER HOLIDAY GUIDE

Nurse Unit Manager Noel Ryan in the Emergency Department

Help is on hand It is the summer holiday season; time for end-ofyear festivities and outdoor fun. It is also the peak season for accidents, injuries and heat-related health issues. Holidaymakers and residents in the Geelong or Bellarine region over the summer need to know where to go for expert help if required. St John of God Geelong Hospital has the region’s first private emergency department where staff are ready to provide outstanding care. Staff see plenty of marine injuries at this time of year. People come into the Emergency Department looking for help with everything from stubbed toes, fish hook and surfboard injuries to stings from jellyfish, sea urchins and stingrays. While stings from jellyfish, sea urchins or stingrays are unlikely to be fatal, they can result in bacterial infection and need professional attention. On hot days at this time of year, the risk of heat stroke can be life threatening. Heat stroke particularly affects the elderly, whose risk can be increased if they are on certain medications. Often, older citizens don’t dress ap-

propriately for the heat and they are the group least likely to turn on an air conditioner or fan. An elderly person suffering heat stroke may be dizzy, disoriented or confused. It is important to move them out of the heat into a cool or air-conditioned environment. If their symptoms don’t improve, it is critical to seek medical advice. Throughout the summer months, snakes are active and can be a potential threat to anyone walking around in the great outdoors - particularly near a river or other body of water. If you do happen to get bitten, keep calm, immobilise the limb, apply a compression bandage and call an ambulance urgently. Don’t apply a tourniquet and don’t wash the bite (venom on the skin will help staff identify the species and suitable anti-venom). Not every snake bite results in the injection of venom into the victim, but every snake bite warrants a visit to hospital just to be sure. St John of God Geelong Hospital, 80 Myers St, Geelong. All board for blues Now in its 22nd year, the Blues Train is one of the most iconic music and tourist attractions in Victoria. The Blues Train, which is a combined music and steam train travel experience, was inspired by stories of the old blues masters jamming on freight trains around America’s deep south. Event founder Hugo T Armstrong finds himself reflecting on the 21 years; the people he’s met and seen come back time and time again, the musicians who cut their teeth at Blues Train and have gone on to earn international success, and the highly skilled railway mainte-

nance team who keep the steam engines running and take care of the track. Hugo says 48 per cent of attendees are repeat clientele. “In these past 21 years, the equivalent of two Etihad stadiums full of people have been to Blues Train shows and we’ve travelled further than the distance from Queenscliff to Shanghai, China,” he says. “Each year our event has a $4.8 million economic impact as well as a $7.5 million indirect economic impact.” Since its humble beginnings, the Blues Train has featured an 18-year-old Mia Dyson, many of Ash Grunwald’s first gigs,

the multi-platinum selling and multi-ARIA award winning John Butler Trio as well as Claude Hay, Collard Greens and Gravy and Jimi Hocking. Hugo says the new acts are just as memorable. Blues Train recently released the fourth volume of its Train Trax CD, a compilation of tracks played at shows throughout the years. Tickets are sold out until late January. Upcoming shows include 23 January, 30 January, 13 February, 20 February and 27 February. For tickets or more information, visit ticketek.com.au or thebluestrain.com.au.

All goods are from the 1850’s right through to present day. Mill Markets lease space to hundreds of dealers, which allows small business operators and collectors who otherwise could not aford the overheads of their own shops, to showcase their goods. This equates to a wide and diverse range of products, available and open to the public, seven days a week. Enjoy a wonderful trip down memory lane through hundreds and thousands of items available for purchase at all three locations. With over 500 stall holders over three venues, there is always something for everyone. Travel The Amazing Mill Markets ‘Golden Triangle’ and enjoy quality food and cofee at each. All venues open 7 days 10.00am-6.00pm (excluding Christmas Day).

Letters Strong argument against violence I write in reply to the recent domestic violence debate in the Geelong Indy’s Buckets & Bouquets. A man will always be physically stronger than a woman, so when he uses this superior strength against her what hope does she have? To seriously suggest a woman can do as much physical harm as a man is misleading. With men’s higher levels of testosterone comes the ability to overpower or stop a woman attacking him, whereas a woman is at an attacking man’s mercy until he stops or is stopped. To truly empathise with women victims, men would have to more often be victims themselves. That is the definition of empathy: the ability to accurately put yourself in someone’s shoes because you have experienced the same or a similar situation. At 26 I am in the age group 15 to 35, for which the number one statistical cause of death is domestic violence for women, not men. Fortunately, I have never been a victim but the fact I have to consider a boyfriend could attack me shows how bad domestic violence is. The reason we hear more about men committing domestic violence is not based on gender stereotyping. It is because the men committing this crime use a strength that should be used to protect, not to dominate, intimidate and control. It is a strength no woman can ever hope to match. Suzanne Bridson Herne Hill

Turnbull fails young jobless Prime Minister Turnbull should explain why over 50 per cent of young people over 18 are unemployed or underemployed in my own backyard Geelong, Victoria’s second largest city. Mr Turnbull’s government is failing our young, despite his ongoing spin. This appalling situation presents a very real future social problem; a law and order problem caused by poverty and no perceived future for our young. Mr Turnbull’s personal financial future might

be secure, theirs isn’t. Michael J Gamble Belmont

The sun and the cycles of climate Dr Ray Black (Letters, 11 December) indicated that he is against free expression but I imagine the Geelong Indy is in favour of it. After 20 years of research, I’ve found a chart clearly showing that the atmospheric maximum of carbon dioxide (CO2), at 400 parts per million (ppm), has repeated five times, 400,000, 340,000, 230,000, 125,000 and just 800 years ago. These figures were taken from research into the Vostock ice-core records. This natural rise in CO2 was by the sun’s influence on earth, which follows natural cycles assumed to be 214,160 years. Therefore, it is possible the sun completed one of its processional cycles on 22 December 2012. These facts suggest the rise of CO2 might now be starting to recede naturally. Time will show whether this is happening, just as the temperature of earth began to down turn in 2009, a fact drawn from satellite temperature records. Labor once said: “It’s time”. I think it’s time to understand what science is really talking about. Thomas T S Watson Bell Post Hill

Many doomed as trillions wasted The Paris climate agreement will go down as the greatest day of infamy since Pearl Harbour. It is stupefying that around 200 nations pledged to fight alleged global warming by spending $1.2 trillion - yes, $1 trillion per year ad infinitum. All this for a problem that doesn’t actually manifest harmfully to the vast majority of people on the planet. It’s mindboggling that a cadre of scientists driven by computer modelling have convinced the world to take action on a non-existent threat. It appears politicians believe anything that purports to be endorsed by consensus science and will fall over themselves in a mad scramble to save the planet. Meanwhile, in the real world millions face

death from starvation, disease and homelessness, not to mention terrorism. Can anyone imagine the great progress that would be made in eliminating poverty, disease and homelessness if nations spent trillions of dollars on addressing these important issues and in having to report back every five years on the progress made? It would be possible that with this sort of commitment these very real problems would be eradicated within a couple of decades. History will judge this generation severely for critical errors in the overzealous pursuit of environmentalism. Alan Barron Grovedale

Heatwaves threat to elderly

Buckets to Concerned Resident. Concerned, yes. Compassionate, no. Do everyone a favour and keep your grumpiness to yourself. Everyone else loves the Christmas lights and lots of families put a lot of time and effort into their displays. Lights House, Norlane

Every summer Victorians know it’s important to prepare for the threat of bushfires. But facts show that heat kills more Australians than any other natural disaster - and senior Victorians are especially at risk. In the 2009 Victorian heatwave the number of deaths increased by 374 people. Almost 80 per cent were over 65. During the 2014 heatwave the number of deaths increased by 167. With more 40C days on the horizon, seniors need to prepare for another potentially deadly summer. We can all help seniors survive the heat. Regular contact with an older person can alleviate loneliness and ensure they are safe and prepared. Seniors can easily become dehydrated, which can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heatstroke, which can permanently damage vital organs or even kill if not treated immediately. Simple steps include drinking more water, staying in air-conditioned areas, doing activities when its coolest and wearing loose, light-coloured clothes. More information is available from radio updates or by visiting betterhealth.vic.gov.au/heat. Readers who know of someone unwell on a hot day can phone NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24 or call 000 for suspected symptoms of heat exhaustion or heatstroke. FINALLY FRIDAY

Essential for Shakespeare lovers By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN “For never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” Romeo and Juliet takes place in a city exhausted by an interminable gang war between “two households, both alike in dignity“. Daily life in Verona has gotten so bad that the Prince declares that he will execute the next person to fight on its streets. This threat, however, does not prevent the tragedy that unfolds in Romeo and Juliet. Rivalries are intensified, revenge is sought, and lives are lost. Tragically, at the centre of this bitterness lies the joy and wonder of the world’s greatest love story - the love of the young star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. This tragic love story has remained popular throughout the centuries, and continues to woo audiences across the globe. That popularity is behind a brilliant summer of entertainment by Essential Theatre as it takes Romeo and Juliet to wineries throughout Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia. Essential Theatre’s Amanda LaBonte said the company had 13 years’ experience in delivering productions to Australian and New Zealand. “Over this time experience has taught us how to juggle inclement and unpredictable weather, noisy cockatoos, stray dogs but most of all how to have a great time with the brilliant words of William Shakespeare,” LaBonte said. “We have mastered the right combination of talented actors, a good sense of humour, and thriving passion to deliver Shakespeare’s language in an accessible and entertaining format.” The tour kicks off with a preview performance on 29 December at Batesford Hotel. The troupe returns to the region for a touring performance on 12 and 14 February at Leura Park Estate.

STAR-CROSSED: Natascha Flowers appears as Juliet and George Lingard as Romeo in Essential Theatre’s latest production. (Sarah Walker)

FINALLY FRIDAY

e v E s r a Geelong gang to New Ye GLAMMY: Geelong cover band Glitter Gang.

add glam glitter By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN With a line-up of Barry Glitter, Marsha Brady, Stevie Knievel, Bobby Dazzler and Mickey Blitz, it can be only one band: Geelong musical institution The Glitter Gang. It’s G-town’s own interpretation of the era of glam rock’s glory days with its big heels, make-up, spacesuits, flares, brutish open chests and 747wing collars. The line-up over the years has contained names such as Sticky Stardust, Riff-Raff Rogey, Astro Macca, Bubbles LeBeau, The Fink, Johnny G-String, Dirk Diggler and Derek Delicious. So it’s apparent the troupe doesn’t take itself too seriously. “There’s some great modern music but sometimes it seems a little bit to serious,” original member Barry Glitter said. “We take the music seriously but we don’t take the performance side too seriously. It’s all a bit of fun. We enjoy the theatre of it, so it’s more to it than just putting out a few songs.” The enduring appeal of the glam rock era sometimes amazed the band, he said. “I suppose we generally appeal to an older crowd but we’ve got multi-generational crossovers these days. “A lot of the songs have been used in movies and television shows, plus everything is so accessible via the internet now. “If people are interested in a song or band they can find it. We couldn’t do that in the era of pub bands.” The Glitter Gang will bring all its sparkle to the Friday night Southern Cross stage of Motor City Music Festival at Geelong Showgrounds. The band will reprise the hits of ’70s icons such as The Sweet, KISS, ELO, Skyhooks, Status Quo,

with

COMING: US band Miss Quincy. ABBA, Sherbet, Hot Chocolate and Gary Glitter. But the Glitter Gang won’t have everything its own way, with some stiff competition from the likes of fellow glam rockers Wild Violet, USA outfit Miss Quincy and Sister’s Doll. The third Motor City offers another top lineup of bands and solo performers from 11 to 13 March, turning the long weekend into a smorgasbord of 40 acts across five stages. The great adult rock on Friday and Saturday will be complemented by blues and roots all weekend. Family-friendly fun-day Sunday will be an ideal time to bring the kids, tweens, teens and grandparents for an all-ages family day featuring the fun of the showgrounds, plus kids’ entertainment. The festival weekend wraps up on Sunday night with a huge fireworks display at 8.45pm.

The bistro operates throughout the week with a buffet night every Thursday and, for seafood lovers, specialty seafood fare every Friday night. Venue manager Tom Sare said everyone is welcome. “Over the last 50 years we have been offering and delivering functions of all sizes and occasions
