Beach heroes sought By LUKE VOOGT
BARWON Heads resident Sally Smith is searching for five heroic beach-goers, who she says saved her life just days before Christmas. Sally, 54, was swimming at Raafs Beach (19W) on 18 December, after her daughter had left, when she was caught in a rip. “Within seconds I was being sucked out and I couldn’t get my feet on the ground,” she said. Sally said if the rip had dragged her into the deep she would not have survived.
“I knew if I floated out no one would be able to see me,” she said. “I tried to swim against the current but I had no hope.” In desperation, she called for help. “I screamed to two boys in the shallows,” she said. “Eventually they heard me and called to three ladies nearby.” The women didn’t hesitate, diving into the surf to rescue Sally. “These ladies were like porpoises,” she said. “They dived in and swam straight at me.”
The women told Sally to lie on her back and formed a human chain to drag her in. “The deepest one risked her life – she could have been sucked in too,” she said. “Her feet were off the ground and she was relying on the woman who was holding onto her. “Once she grabbed my hand I could breathe – it was an incredible relief.” Eventually the quick-thinking trio pulled her back to shore. Sally was extremely grateful to her

rescuers and wanted to thank them in person. She said one of the brave boys, named “Oscar”, was five years old, while the other was about 10, with glasses and dark hair. “I think his name was Raj,” she said. “For those boys to call out to strangers was incredibly brave – I thought they were their mothers but they weren’t.” Sally was unable to describe the women, due to shock. “They did say their names but I was
in such a state that I couldn’t remember them,” she said. Speaking to the Voice last weekend, Sally vowed she would never swim outside the flags again. “I was just going in for a quick 10 minute dip and I’ve swum at Ocean Grove for my whole life,” she said. “But once I got sucked out I didn’t have a chance.” Do you know anything thing about Sally’s rescuers? Or any other unsung local heroes? If so email newsdesk@ voicegroup.com.au.

THE Shell Road Reserve Pavilion was one step closer to completion, with builders finishing bulk excavation, realigning the sewer and testing the pile footings of the site. Ocean Grove Councillor Jan Farrell said construction of the new pavilion was on schedule and progressing well. The construction of Ocean Grove Performance Space was also progressing well and was expected to be “ready to occupy” by the end of March according to Ocean Grove Park Inc president Colin Atkin. Ocean Grove actor Keith Purcell won a yearlong scholarship to study at the Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre in Los Angeles. The 17-year-old who can already boast regular appearances in Neighbours as well as a part in the Underbelly Squizzy series, won the place at the esteemed California academy after impressing acting teachers. Long-time local Crockett Cooke conquered the waves at the Pier to Pub despite living with a very rare form of motor neurone disease. Crockett competed in the event to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Victoria and had raised more than $2000 from the race and other events.

More than 60 people attended the Tuckerbag Reunion, 20 years after the supermarket closed in 1995. The old supermarket was the very first on the Bellarine, back in 1980, when Ocean Grove had a population of just 4500.
Grove Pavilion patrons withstood the inclement weather to witness over 100 cast and crew roll out over five hours of song, dance and percussion well into the evening. The official opening was lead by Park President Colin Atkins and the plaque was unveiled by Cr Jan Farrell on behalf of State Minister for the Environment, Lisa Neville and the City of Greater Geelong.

February WORKS began to install traffic signals at the busy intersection of Shell Road and the Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre. Beangala Ward Councillor Jan Farrell said the signals would make the intersection safer and ease congestion. Ocean Grovers banded together to support former resident Scott Beyer in his ongoing fight against cancer. Family and friends were all too willing to give their time to help Scott, who was diagnosed with a rare non-Hodgkin Lymphoma on Christmas Eve, 2013. The weather gods smiled on the Wallington Strawberry Fair when the storm clouds shifted and sun burnt through for another successful school fund-raiser. Thousands of visitors took advantage of a packed day of music, demonstrations - and lots of tempting food. Wallington Primary School’s annual Strawberry Fair went off without a hitch. Thousands were treated to the red berry desserts, which attracted long and endless queues. Pavs, pancakes and punnets were churned out to the hungry hordes. On the main stage entertainment included Andrea Robertson and Band, the Tiny Giants and Jamie Pye as well as auctions, Dazzling Dan and spinning wheels.

New Labor candidate for Corangamite Libby Coker began her campaign with a scathing assessment of Bellarine NBN access. Ms Coker released official NBN information on local access last Tuesday. “The assessment shows not one single town or suburb, small or large, in the Bellarine Peninsula has pre-existing homes or businesses connected by fibre,” she said. Rolling Pin walked away with a clutch of awards at Australia’s Best Pie Competition and the Official Great Aussie Pastie Competition. It won Australia’s Best Vegetarian Pastie, Australia’s Best Traditional Pastie made by an apprentice (Dylan Hobbs) and Australia’s Best Plain Beef Pie made by an apprentice (Dylan Hobbs). They also finished runner-up for Gourmet Pie with their Beef and Burgundy favourite and Traditional Pastie. The Avenue and Baker and Thacker Streets were announced as the next streets to benefit from council’s efforts to improve local footpaths. Works were underway on The Avenue and Baker Street is up for tender. A teenage girl was airlifted to hospital after she was in collision with a 4WD while crossing the Bellarine Highway at Wallington. The 16-year-old was seriously injured in the accident on the westbound side of the highway opposite the Flying Brick Cider House.

OCEAN Grovers Elva and Ted Jordan celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Active and healthy, except for Elva’s “annoying” fractured wrist that will limit their anniversary plans, the couple are now both 90 and still do everything together. Ocean Grove florist Beachside Blooms has gone into the bridal industry Hall of Fame after winning the Victorian title in its division for the sixth time in seven years. Owner Shelley Keast said it was “fantastic” after they won with a percentage of 99.78 in the ABIA awards decided by customers voting online. Ocean Grove high school students were among the winners in the first Andrews State Budget, with Bellarine Secondary College landing $1.1 million for much needed upgrades of classrooms and flexible new learning spaces. Principal Alison Murphy welcomed the news saying Bellarine Secondary College was excited that the government was delivering on their promise to the community in the first year of their term of government. A notorious Grove junction was finally getting traffic lights eight years after it was deemed a priority by locals. President of the Ocean Grove Community Association, Michael Harbour, welcomed funding for lights at the Marlin Drive and Tuckfield Street junction in the State Budget.

Alistair worked as an incident controller, in Alberta and British Columbia, where the majority of forest fires occurred. Ocean Grove Supertoys owner Kerrie Byron and her family were stranded amid the chaos in Bali. They were among thousands of Australians looking for accommodation after flights were grounded by a nearby volcanic eruption. Ocean Grove hosted its second Light of Day Australia event with more than 30 musicians donating their time to performing at the shows that raise funds and awareness. The show was held at three venues simultaneously over two nights. Last year it was just the Piping Hot Chicken and Burger Grill but this time it will also include the Olive Pit Delicatessen and the Driftwood Cafe.

Dave’s big win By LUKE VOOGT OCEAN Grove resident Dave Kovacic added to his list of recent triumphs by winning an international Braille essay competition last month. Dave, 55, won the Onkyo Braille Competition out of all entries in the Asia-Pacific region. “I’m stoked - it’s the first time I’ve written anything like that,” he said. Dave scored 76.5 percent for his essay about the many adventures he’s had since losing his vision. His topic was the positives of life after blindness. “To be honest, I didn’t think I’d get anywhere, so all I tried to do was make it funny,” he said. “If you don’t laugh at least once a day it’s a day wasted.” The 1000-word essay took Dave three days to write.
He wrote about putting up all the Christmas lights outside, “without blowing up the house”. “Which is always a bonus,” he added. Dave also wrote about “reclaiming his life” by taking up surfing, metal detecting and kayaking again, and driving a racing car at Sandown. He said he enjoyed the challenge of learning to do things differently and said being blind improved his other senses. “Now I have to figure out how to do everything in a safe environment,” he said. He then used a Braille display to convert the essay to printed English. Dave also included the NDIS in his essay, and spoke about its benefits for people with a disability. Blind Citizens Australia president Emma Bennison was thrilled for David to win.

his mobility and independence after blindness. It was big month for the avid prospector, who recently found a gold nugget on a prospecting trip in Creswick. The competition included five entries from each country involved and the winner was judged in Malaysia.

THE Ocean Grove Community Association (OGCA) is leading the push for footpaths on Grubb Road, after reports of pedestrians walking dangerously close to traffic. Association president Michael Harbour said he had seen people walking on Grubb Road, including school children. “We’ve noticed people are walking down Grubb Road with prams because there are no footpaths,” he said. “We think that needs to be urgently addressed.” General manager of City Services William Tieppo said the council was working with developers to provide pedestrian links in the estates north of Shell Road.
He said this was to avoid the need for children and parents with prams to use Grubb Road. “The council will be undertaking community-wide consultation on footpath networks in Ocean Grove over the coming months,” he said He said the council would identify a network that best met the community’s needs and provided safe pedestrian connections throughout the town. “We think that is great idea,” Mr Harbour said. “But there appears to be no short term solution for pedestrians between Oakdene Estate and Shell Road.” The area of Grubb Road between Bellarine Highway and Shell Road is managed by VicRoads.

ROUGHLY 6000 locals and tourists attended the 19th Tranquillity Fair last Saturday, which organisers have hailed as one of the most successful yet. More than 4000 adults bought tickets and Ocean Grove Park Association (OGPA) president, Murray Waugh, estimated 6000 people in total, with children attending for free. “That would have to be one of our highest attendances, if not our highest,” he said. “Even up until 4pm we still had a lot of people around.”
Dark skies threatened to spoil events in the morning but the sun broke through just before midday, providing fair-goers with warm weather the rest of the day. The Tranquillity Fair made use of the Ocean Grove Pavilion the first time this year, which Murray said made things run much more smoothly. He said the pavilion served as a storage space for the OGPA and allowed an easier transition between different performers. “It was fantastic – we didn’t have to hire a stage,” he said.
“There were more people watching the music than ever before.” The crowd enjoyed a wide range of music from Ebony De Lima, Velvet Bow, The Tides of Welcome, Steve McEwan and the Yesmen, Three Kings and Fulton. They also got involved in a drumming demonstration in the afternoon. Murray said the fair’s 125 stalls had already been booked-out by last November. “We even had people standing by if someone didn’t turn up,” he said. “That’s a tribute to Barb and Phil
Dix, who organise the stalls.” Barb said this year’s new stalls included delicious Turkish food and very popular “potato spirals”. With the amount of interest, she said she “could have had two fairs and filled them both.” The OGPA also provided free stalls for the Queenscliff Rural Australians for Refugees, Children in Cambodia and the CFA. Murray praised and thanked the fair’s 70 volunteers who manned the gates, and helped setup for four hours on Friday evening and at 5.30am Saturday.

Bellarine policing increases State View with Lisa Neville MP
BELLARINE police numbers and station staffing has been a serious concern on the Bellarine since station operating hours were severely slashed by the previous government in late 2014. It is very pleasing to report that the now State Government has gone a long way in fulfilling its commitment to restoring police station operation hours and increasing police numbers. In early December Police Commissioner Graham Ashton announced that the Drysdale and Portarlington stations would be reopening seven days per week and that Queenscliff would open four days a week at this stage. In addition, 15 extra police are being recruited to the region. These staffing arrangements will also take the pressure off the Ocean

Grove Station that was serving as the dispatch centre when the other stations were closed. I welcome these announcements as I know that community safety is a priority for Bellarine. 2015: A busy year As we move into 2016 it is interesting to look back briefly on the year that has just gone. From a State Government perspective 2105 was, as usual, a busy one on the Bellarine, with many local projects being announced and commenced across the peninsula. In Ocean Grove for example, with summer upon us I have been working with the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club in having their club rooms refurbished and extended with a commitment from the State Government of $2.56 million. There is obviously no need for me to explain the importance of the
club to Ocean Grove, not only as an important rescue service, but also as a club for locals in pursuing a great sport and recreation outlet, while at the same time providing an important community service. And things like the clubs Nippers program is a wonderful way for local kids to be educated, kept active and involved in a great club. Over the wider Bellarine region other important projects are about to commence or have. For example, in Drysdale funding has been made available and planning has commenced for the much needed bypass. And funding for the towns new sporting precinct has just been Portarlington has seen its safe harbour project commenced which when finished will provide important modern infrastructure for the growing Bellarine aquaculture industry. The new harbour will also be
built to ensure a future Bellarine to Melbourne ferry could be operated. In addition, there are lots of other things happening in towns like Queenscliff, Barwon Heads and closer to town, Leopold. And across the region many of the local schools have received important funding for upgrade; ensuring Bellarine students are being taught in modern 21st century facilities. Finally as we have leave 2015 well behind, I would like to wish all Bellarine residents and visitors a very happy and healthy 2016. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me by email or call my office if there are any matters that I may be able to assist you with directly. Canine’s knack for comforting patients By LUKE VOOGT OCEAN Grove psychologist Alison Lewis-Nicholson has a unique working partner at her Geelong practice: Bougal the six-year-old cavoodle. Alison said Bougal accidently fell into his role comforting patients. He was “free to a good home”, so she took him to work to see what
he was like. It was then Alison discovered Bougal’s unique knack for comforting patients. “I didn’t want to leave him home alone – I brought him to work and he just took up the role himself,” she said. “He’s very emotionally intelligent – he will go over and sit next
to people when they are anxious or upset.” Alison and Bougal won recognition at last month’s Cherished Pets Community Awards which celebrates pets’ contributions to wellbeing. Cherished pets held the awards on 12 December, in conjunction with Wallington’s WRG.
“I thought it was a great idea to get people recognising that pets have a role helping individuals, and that they are important in people’s lives,” Alison said. Alison has practiced psychology for 20 years and moved to Ocean Grove from Geelong seven years ago.

OCEAN Grove travel agent Nicole Brian is already busy planning her next big trip to Africa this September, with three families signed up already. “You’ve got to plan early for this sort of thing,” she said. The tour will cross South Africa, as well passing through Zimbabwe and Zambia, and stopping at the picturesque Victoria Falls. The trip will focus heavily on conservation and education. “The reason we are doing it is our kids are very into conservation,” she said. “I wanted it to be educational - not just a Disney Land trip.” Nicole has been to Africa on similar trips and is using that experience to pack in as much animal-based fun as possible. The tour will visit the Jane Goodall Chimp Sanctuary and families can get up close with elephants at the Elephant Whisperers. “The kids can help feed and wash them,” she said. “It’s really hands-on.” The chimp sanctuary rescues chimpanzees that been orphaned, traded in the illegal pet market or traumatised for entertainment in circuses and beach resorts. The trip also includes a game of soccer with local children, while children on the tour will all get to donate a pair of boots each. Nicole said the enthusiasm from youngsters had been infectious. “It’s amazing how many kids have gotten involved,” she said. “It’s more the kids who are interested.” Swagman tours, whose owners Tracey and Wayne Hamilton are from Ocean Grove, are co-organising the trip. The majority of the trip will take place in South Africa. “We’ve chosen South Africa because it’s somewhere in Africa where people feel more comfortable taking their kids,” she said. Try out something different HAVE you made a resolution to lose weight and get fit? This is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions, says Penny Tompkinson from Step Into Life Ocean Grove. “With the New Year now upon us, you will either be going strong or have already fallen off the wagon,” she said. “If you are going strong great work, and keep it up. “If not, then trying something different may get you the results you are looking for. “If training alone or taking out a gym membership
hasn’t worked, now is a good time to seek out a personal trainer to assist you.” Penny says Investment in yourself is important, make it a priority and you will soon see a huge difference. “Be honest with yourself and your trainer and turn up,” she said. “The first three to four weeks are the hardest, if you are committed training soon becomes easier and more importantly exercise becomes a habit.” Find out more about Penny Tomkinson and Step into Life Ocean Grove at www. stepintolife.com

Who let the dogs out? By JEN CARR I HAVE to get on my Christmas soapbox now. I was so distressed at Blue Waters Lake to see a lady just allowing her staffies to run right through the reeded areas, which are habitat to many young birds. I was watching a young reed warbler at the time that the dogs just bustled through the area where I sat (fortunately the reed warbler survived), but I did find a dead Pacific black duckling. The Australasian grebe left it’s nest and did not return, and I couldn’t see any eggs on the empty nest. It was horrible to watch. I just wish people cared about the chaos that their animals caused in these areas and I wish people would obey the signs that say ‘PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOGS ON A LEAD’. It’s the same with the area along the Barwon River estuary at the end of Lelean St that says ‘NO DOGS’. Most of the time when I go down there to check on the migratory shorebirds that we are so lucky to share our habitat with, I see people just not caring and just letting their dogs splash around where the sign clearly says ‘NO DOGS’. Obviously there are many people who do not care and can’t read. Maybe this is a reason we don’t have any bartailed godwits here this year? Are signs not the answer? What can we do as a community
to tackle this problem? Please, please, please keep dogs under control around our wetlands and on beaches to give these birds some chance of surviving. It’s so distressing to watch and it’s something we can all take responsibility for. I love dogs, I own dogs, but they are on a lead and they don’t go near places where they could cause chaos.

We conserve, present and enhance the natural & developed coastal environs for the enjoyment and use of all
BARWON COAST Barwon Coast is a Committee of Management appointed by the State Government with responsibility for the management of 13km of coastal crown land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and 13thBeach. Our Committee members are local residents appointed with consideration of the skills and experience that they have to offer in the management of this important piece of coastline. NEW FORESHORE TOILETS Barwon Coast constructed two new ‘micro flush’ public toilets that were opened for public use in Mid-December. The ‘all access’ facilities are located at the Bridge Car Park on the Ocean Grove Spit, immediately east to the Barwon Heads bridge and the other on 13th Beach Road at the Beacon Car Park. The environmentally friendly facilities should be a welcome addition to the public infrastructure available to the local community and visitors alike. They come at a total investment cost of $200k by Barwon Coast. The Beacon Car Park toilet is pictured. DOG ON BEACHES Barwon Coast works closely with the City of Greater Geelong and this year COGG has purchased a special vehicle to improve patrols on public land. For the last few years an educative approach has been taken toward dogs on beaches and other public land. We ask that all dog owners practice responsible ownership and abide by the signage onsite. This year Penalty Infringements Notices will be imposed where necessary. PLAT IT SAFE BY THE WATER As we move into our summer beach season it is important to always swim between the flags at our locally patrolled beaches - Ocean Grove Main, Ocean Grove Spit 18W and 13th Beach Main where Life Savers & Lifeguards will be on patrol 7 days a week, for the peak holiday covering week from Boxing day to Australia day . At all beach access pathways we have installed Beach Safety Signs that provide advice on general water conditions, rocks, tide etc. and where the nearest patrolled beach is. Please take time to read those notices. Always be alert on the beach when with children and never swim alone.
No diving / jumping from jetty, promenade or bridge Tragically serious incidents have occurred in recent summers so it is really important to take personal responsibility for your safety when near the water, be it at the ocean or the river beaches. Dangerous activities such as jumping or diving off the Barwon Heads jetty, the promenade or the bridge can lead to serious injury especially back injuries. This year we have seen massive movement of sands along the beaches and at low river flows the water depth can be minimal, especially at low tide near the Jetty, so don’t do it! BARWON HEADS PROMENADE UPDATE Rebuilding of the seawall commenced on Monday 28th September and was completed by the 18th of December 2015. The construction of a new concrete promenade, including a handrail will begin after Australia Day. The promenade walk re-opened the week before Christmas. In the interest of public safety, all visitors to the area are asked to take note of the site signage and only walk as directed. SUMMER SHUTTLE BUS Leave your car at home or your caravan park and catch the free shuttle bus coordinated by Barwon Coast with financial support from valuable community aware sponsors. The free bus is operating from 27th December until 26th January commencing at 10am thru to 6pm with an hourly lap of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and the beaches starting at the Ocean Grove Post Office. The Shuttle Bus tows a trailer to carry beach gear including surf boards. I encourage you to contact Barwon Coast to discuss any issues related to coastal management in our region by phoning 5254 1118. Gary McPike General Manager

Grubbers the big BPCA improvers OCEAN Grove Cricket Club has been one of the biggest improvers in the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association A grade under the guidance of new coach Paul Jubber. At the mid-season point of the season, the Grubbers remain in contention to make A Grade finals after winning their first three games of the season. The Grubbers have claimed wins against Queenscliff in round one, Portarlington in round two and a narrow away win against Barrabool in round three. Some of the highlights this season include a stunning unbeaten 100 from Paul Jubber in his debut innings at Ocean Grove against Portarlington in round two. Youngsters Rob Procter and Lindon Gi-
uffrida, who has taken six wickets at 22, both have shown good signs with the ball and bat this season. OCEAN GROVE COACH PAUL JUBBER TALKS ABOUT THE YOUTH AT THE CLUB “We have really unearthed some young talent and we will continue to keep playing the young players. I think going forward this season we will continue with the youth policy and we will continue to develop the developing players at our club. From a longevity and I guess from a succession plan point of view to continue to develop those kids and so that we can be strong in the future.”
STAR PERFORMER Dan Roddis 10 wickets at 15.30

RUN HOME The Grubbers would need to win at least three of their last four matches to make the BPCA’s top four to play finals. A showdown against local rivals Collendina in round eight looms crucial if the Grubbers want to play A grade finals. Cobras looking to make the finals COLLENDINA Cricket Club A grade will be looking to cement a top four Bellarine Cricket Peninsula Association finals berth when games commence on Saturday 9 January. This season has been fruitful for the Cobras with wins against Barrabool, Queenscliff and two wins against bottom placed Wallington. The top order has clicked into gear at Collendina with consistent contributions from Richie Peters, Corey Walter, Ben Ricardo and Matt Davies with the bat. The Cobra batting quartet, have all made half-centuries this season. Charlie Lamb has been star for the Cobras with 14 wickets this season and will be contention for the league’s bowling aggregate at the completion of the season.
COLLENDINA CO-COACH COREY WALTER TALKS ABOUT THE TOP ORDER BATTING IMPROVEMENT. “We have put a bit of ownership on the batsman this season, we have pretty please that Richie Peters has made a few starts at the top of the order, Matt Davies has made two half-centuries, Ben Ricardo has made a couple of start a half-century and a 30 and couple of young kids like Max Sutton and Sam Walsh have made some runs. It is really pleasing, we are not relying on one or two guys with the bat, we are getting a nice even spread and that is what you need to be competitive.” STAR PERFORMER Charlie Lamb 14 wickets at 7.79
RUN HOME Early wins in the new year should sew up the Cobras top four A grade position. Collendina’s round eight home game against local rivals and fellow BPCA finals aspirant Ocean Grove will be a key game. Face a challenging run home run with three of the last four games are away from the Cobras home fortress. All of the opposition teams that Collendina face are in contention to make finals. Club Grove’s Premier Division side capped off an amazing premiership win after defeating Victoria Bowling Club in an epic grand final contest. Collendina made the BPCA finals, but lost to Anglesea in a tight contest at Anglesea. Overall it was a successful season for the Cobras. LUCAS Cameron swapped his cricket whites to play in the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime world darts exhibition. The 34-year-old earned right to play in a Darts Invitational Challenge after he won a qualifying event in Oakleigh. He said it would be a surreal experience to play with the likes of world number one darts player Michael van Gerwen and Aussie darts sensation Simon Whitlock. Ocean Grover Nick Wightman and Natalie Mensch from Belmont won the men’s and women’s open events in the annual Rip to River. Wightman won with his time of 32:39 while Mensch ran 38:29. Dan Roddis took 6/44 for Ocean Grove to help defeat Collendina in a thrilling BPCA A grade game. The Grubbers won by one run against their cross-town rivals.
DESPITE a 125-point opening round loss, Ocean Grove drew a bumper crowd to its opening round football clash against Geelong Amateur. President Ian Walker said the crowd was four times the size of a regular home crowd. Ocean Grove suffered a 17-point loss to cross-river rivals Barwon Heads in the Battle of the Bridge match at home. It was Grove’s third straight loss to open the season. However the A grade netball side defeated the Seagulls by 22 goals. Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club veteran Mark Graham was the star from the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. Graham, 38, won a gold medal in the ironman 35-39 age group category. AFL Western Bulldogs 203-game veteran Ryan Hargrave, unveiled as one of Ocean Grove Football Club’s new recruits in 2015, takes part in pre-season training at Bellarine Secondary College’s Ocean Grove campus. A renowned defender, Hargrave’s signing was a major coup for the Grubbers. Ocean Grove defeated Newcomb outright to keep its faint A grade cricket finals hops flickering. Chris McSween took match figures of 10/40 to give the Grubbers maximum points. Collendina pace duo Charlie Lamb and Andy Higgins took all 10 wickets to give the Cobras a win against Jan Juc which propelled them into the top four. Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club held two days of nippers’ carnivals - the Western Regional qualifying events and the Lifesaving Victoria State Carnival.

Seven Ocean Grove footballers were named in an initial 53-man squad for Bellarine Football League’s Interleague clash against Wimmera. Grubber players chosen in an extended squad included new Ocean Grove ruck Andrew Jarvis and ex-Geelong West GFL defender Jahd Anderson. Travis Gavin kicked 13 goals and Brayden Warren 11 as Ocean Grove defeated Newcomb by 286 points. The A grade netball side also had a day out, beating the Power by 53 goals. Ocean Grove Primary School pupil Fraser Clark, 10, competed in the Victorian Country Road Cycling Championships. Fraser finished with the peloton in a sprint finish to claim third place.
OCEAN Grove defeated Modewarre to claim its fourth win a row to square the ledger at four wins and four losses. The Grubbers were winless after the first four rounds but reeled off four consecutive wins. The local business community was urged to help support Ocean Grove Bowling Club based Australian Deaf Bowls representative Robyn Larkin. Larkin was one of 10 Australians that would play at the International Deaf Bowls Championships in Northern Ireland from 28 August to 9 September. Larkin was forced to cover her own flights, accommodation, uniform and food to play for her country. Ocean Grove marathon runner Kristie Jennings, 29, qualified for the 2016 Osaka Marathon in Japan after her time of 03:39:28 at the Great Ocean Road Marathon. The new Ocean Grove resident who moved to the Bellarine late last year from Melbourne’s west, was checking her junk emails when a oncein-a-lifetime trip was offered to her. Surfside Waves women’s soccer side’s unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Barwon. Barwon scored the winner with 15 minutes left on the clock.

Baxter joins batch of new Grubbers By MARK HEENAN FORMER Newtown and Chilwell GFL utility Aaron Baxter joins a list of promising new recruits at the Grubbers in 2016. Baxter, 29, who played 83 GFL senior games with Newtown and Chilwell, lives locally in Ocean Grove and played his junior football at the Grubbers. “I am rapt to join and I have been thinking
about joining Ocean Grove for a whole year,” he said. He joins Ocean Grove’s biggest off-season signing after the Grubbers landed former Geelong VFL representative and Colac GFL gun midfielder James Linton. Linton, a member of Colac’s 2014 GFL premiership team and a former Victoria Country Football League representative, was named best
afield in Geelong Football League’s Interleague clash against the Goulburn Valley Football League in 2013. Other notable Ocean Grove Football Club senior recruits include new Grubber playing assistant coach David King, Tom Hobbs, Michael Sacco, Julian Bramucci, Nick Green, James Wills, Harry Wood, Gregor Campbell and Cheyne Kelly.

The Southern State Championships takes place from Thursday January 7 to Sunday January 10 across competitions held at Kardinia Aquatic Centre in Geelong and competitions at Jan Juc SLSC and Fairhaven SLSC. IN other surf life saving club news, senior Ocean Grove SLSC competitors competed well at the senior Life Saving Victoria carnival at Anglesea on Sunday 3 January. Among the highlights was Ocean Grove SLSC’s victory in the Under 17 Men’s Single Ski Relay event. Ocean Grove came in first place in the Under 17 Men’s Taplin Relay race. Nippers star at Cosy Corner UP to 85 nippers from the Ocean Grove SLSC competed at the Life Saving Victoria carnival held at Cosy Corner in Torquay on Saturday 2 January. In good conditions, the Ocean Grove nippers competed very well across all the age groups from Under 8’s through to Under 14’s. There were lots of excellent results for the Ocean Grove team across all age groups and events. The Ocean Grove SLSC boys Aqua Cameron relay teams were some of the best
performers on the day. The Under 13, Under 10 and Under 8 age group Aqua Cameron relay teams all won their races. The Under 12 Boys Surf Board Rescue pair of Xavier Eales and Darcy Freeman finished in first place. The Under 13 Boys Surf team won their race, while Under 13 competitor Tim Hannan celebrated his Victorian state selection with a win in the individual Under 13 Boys Surf Board race. The coaching team was re-
ally extremely pleased with results across all teams, and it was great to see so many new and first year nippers coming home with lots of ribbons. It goes to show how much hard work the nippers and coaching team have been doing over the last few months. Ocean Grove SLSC would like to thank all parents and club volunteers for their contributions on the day. Ocean Grove SLSC will host a junior state Life Saving Victoria carnival on Saturday 13 February.

Rip to River legend grows By MARK HEENAN THE iconic status of Rip to River Classic legend Nick Wightman is growing, according to Ocean Grove SLSC president Steve Peatling, after he won his fifth title on 2 January. The Ocean Grove-based Wightman, 30, strode to victory in 32:47, to win 10km Classic and finished ahead of training partner Harry Smithers, who came second in 33:10. “It is great, he (Nick Wightman) is becoming a bit of an icon for our Rip to River Classic,” Peatling said. “I would really love to see him have some success with his Olympic trials and stuff. Someone from the local area representing us at such a high level would be great.” Wightman, who turns 31 this month, will race in the eight kilometre Mountain to Surf event in Lorne on Friday 15 January. He said he was yet to hit his peak over the 10km race distance. “I am still getting fitter and still getting better,” Wightman told the Voice. “I have not reached my best in the 10km, I used to be more of a 1500 metre runner, the 10km run would seem like a long way in this race.” Dawnbusters 5km fun run winner Daniel Hutchinson finished third in 34:29, while fourth-placed Ocean Grove local James Dalton claimed his first top five finish in 34:43. “I was fairly happy with a top five finish, not over the moon with the time, but satisfied,” Dalton said. IN the women’s 10km run, Mornington Peninsula local Sarah Klein won her third Rip to River Classic crown. Klein, 30, who had won the 10km women’s event back-to-back prior to missing last summer’s Rip to River Classic, finished in a time of 37.22. Klein said the higher than usual tide made it a tough start for competitors at the 10km start point at the Point Lonsdale lighthouse.
10km run winners Nick Wightman and Sarah Klein with OGSLSC president Steve Peatling and MP Sarah Henderson. 148677 “We did notice at the start line the tide was in a bit further in than other years,” she said. “I wanted to go under 37 minutes, I did not quite do it, but on the whole it was up there with one of my quicker runs.” In the 5km run, Brad Molloy won in a time of 17:41, while Patrick Matthews came second in 17:51 and Ocean Grove local Tyron Cover finished in third in 17:55. “I think it was the first time I ran under 18 minutes in the 5km, I was
happy to get third,” Cover said. In the 10km walk, renowned multiple winner Merryn Dawborn-Gudlach won in a time of 1:13:23. In the 1.4km Ripper Nipper event, 11-year-old youngster Nick Bell won in a time of 05:03. Up to 1100 participants competed across both the 10km run and 10km walk and 5km run and the 1.4km Ripper Nipper race events. Ocean Grove SLSC Steve Peatling pleased with the turnout despite low-
er numbers in Ripper Nipper event, which coincided with Life Saving Victoria’s junior nipper state carnival at Torquay’s Cosy Corner. “With the clash with Cosy Corner carnival it is sort of what we were expecting anyway a number drop in the Ripper Nipper race,” he said. “But overall the numbers were really good, it was really well marketed this summer.“ The annual Rip to River Classic is Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club’s major fundraiser.
Picture: LINDSAY KELLEY Federal Member for Corangamite, Sarah Henderson, who presented medallions to age group winners at the after race presentations, praised the Ocean Grove SLSC’s tireless work to help organise the Rip to River Classic. “Congratulations to the club (Ocean Grove SLSC) and to all the competitors,” Ms Henderson said. “It is a wonderful event and it is a great credit to the Ocean Grove SLSC, they have done such a wonderful job for in excess of 1000 competitors this year.”
