that 22 of the young people who died were on regional roads. He said everyone had to shoulder the responsibility for keeping each other safe on the roads. “Whether it’s speaking up from the passenger seat when you see something unsafe, or just talking to a mate if you have concerns about their driving, these are things that could prevent a tragedy, he said. He urged parents to stay involved with their children’s driving after they move on from L-plates and to talk to them about avoiding risky situations. In 2016, headlines like ‘Pain won’t stop’, ‘Birthday tragedy’ and ‘Tribute to Angels’ we can all do without.

Acting Sgt Rust said that doesn’t take into account those detected by other police units working in the region. Yarra Ranges Mayor and paramedic working in the Yarra Ranges, Jason Callanan, said rural and regional areas had been hit hardest when it came to the road toll. “Getting your licence is one of the best things that kids can do, as far as their independence and their ability to go out and get employment, he said. “But they’ve got to understand that the vehicle they are driving can be a danger, and they really need to understand the consequences of any risktaking behaviour. Across the state, TAC figures show

The frustration of seeing lives lost and the factors that make it so senseless - no seatbelts, alcohol, drugs, speed ... no licence. No-one is immune. “It can be a lot of the same police officers attending collisions that are also involved across their communities as well, Acting Sgt Rust said. “It’s not only the families that are impacted, it’s emergency services, police and other close friends, as well as family, He said drug-driving was an emerging and disturbing trend. In the Lilydale Highway Patrol office alone from March last year 214 people were sent off to be tested after initial samples indicated drug use.

edy in August when Yarra Glen footballer, 16-year-old Cooper Ratten, died in a crash on Glenview Rd. The driver, 17, and another passenger, also 17, were also local footballers. In March, 21-year-old Charlie Robertson died on Milners Road in Launching Place. At the time, two 20-year-olds were fighting for their lives and two others had minor injuries. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Graeme Rust said the jump in road deaths was disturbing. “Youth is the big one, and it’s preventable, he said. The impact is something that police speak about every time.

THE death of young people on our roads last year seemed like a neverending story. In terms of impact - immediate and for years to come - there was no doubt in the Mail office that it should be our ‘issue’ of the year. Seven young people died on local roads, around the Dandenong Ranges and the Yarra Valley. We’re not alone in bearing this tragic and preventable waste. Figures released last week by the TAC show that across the state young driver and passenger deaths more than doubled last year compared with 2014. It’s not just the deaths, the life-affecting injury is something that is buried in time. Often, it’s not the driver who becomes the statistic. They end up in court, usually with the broken families beside them, and who even knows how they manage not only the legal repercussions, but the guilt and regret that they must own. The deaths at Avonsleigh in July of teenagers Sharn Walker, Felisha Allen and Jason Breakwell, the girls still at school, sent ripples of shock and grief across the region. Jake Mitchell survived that crash. Their involvement with the Emerald Football/Netball Club was part of a network of sport and school which connects young people from towns right across Yarra Ranges. Sharmaine Blyth, 19, from Cockatoo died in April at Yellingbo when her car ran off the road and hit a tree at Yellingbo. The crash that took the life of 16-year-old Amber Beard in Mount Evelyn in October was a scene of absolute carnage. There were nine people in the car aged from 16 to 26 and no-one came away without injury. The driver, a 22-year-old former Healesville resident, was critically injured, as was her 26-year-old male passenger. The Yarra Ranges football/netball community was once again hit by trag-

Body locations a must THE Liberal Nationals Coalition in government will make it law so that any convicted murderer is prevented from being released on parole if they have not provided police with the details on where the body of their victim is located. A convicted murderer cannot claim to be remorseful or rehabilitated if they are not prepared to give closure to the family and friends of their victim. Families have a right to bury their loved one and to say good bye. Under Daniel Andrews and Labor, crime is up and police numbers are being cut. The Coalition in government will put the rights of victims and their families at the centre of decision making for the criminal justice system. Nick Wakeling MP, Member for Ferntree Gully
Bomb found in house A HOMEMADE bomb was located at a house in Ferntree Gully on 10 January causing neighbours of the property to be evacuated. The owner of the property on Ferntree Gully Road near Windermere Drive located the explosive device inside the house and moved it to the backyard before notifying police at 9.30pm. The area was cordoned off and surrounding houses evacuated while the attending bomb squad disarmed the improvised bomb. There were no injuries and evacuees returned to their properties after about four or five hours. The property owner, a 57 year old female, is working with Knox Crime Investigation Unit on their investigation of the incident. There is a nominated suspect but no charges have been laid at this stage.
Ray of hope for climate READING responses to the Paris Climate Change Agreement from 35 different organisations, around the world, I feel some optimism that humanity has perhaps turned a very important corner. Comments from groups working on the frontline of climate change caught my eye. Cafod, Catholic aid agency, said; “For poor people living on the frontline of climate change, this deal offers hope for a brighter future, but not yet the security that we’ll get there quick enough”. Josh Gilbert, Chair, NSW Young Farmers, said; “It is widely recognised that farmers are on the front lines of climate change and that there is a great opportunity for farmers to not only feed and clothe the world, but also power and empower our communities through renewables”. Finally, Jaden Harris, of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, mixed optimism with caution saying; “This historic agreement gives young people hope that a safe climate future is still within reach. Turnbull needs to match our rhetoric in Paris with real change back home”. I’m with Jaden on caution because we know vested interests will try to undermine this agreement and governments will quickly forget their commitments if ‘we’ let them. Peter Cook, Clematis

Horror year on roads A horrific crash that claimed the lives of three popular teens in Avonsleight in June rocked the Hills community and contributed to a horror years on local roads. Mail editor PETER DOUGLAS takes a look at what made headlines in 2015. Avonsleigh Angels THE close-knit Dandenong Ranges community was rocked by the deaths of three teenagers in a car accident. Sharn Walker, Felisha Allen and Jason Breakwell lost their lives after their car hit a tree along Phillip Road in Avongsleigh on Tuesday, 30 June. Friend Jake Mitchell, also a teen at the time, survived the crash. Moving tributes were held around the area, including at the Emerald versus Gembrook-Cockatoo football match, where the teens all had strong links. After the match, all players locked arms and formed a ring around the centre-circle of the Gembrook football ground. Emerald Secondary College students threw open their doors to help students mourning over the shock loss. All three were well-known at the school, with both girls in Year 11.

Yarra Ranges Council – as well as Bennett and business partner Adam Garrison – organised meetings to encourage greater understanding of the proposal. Before the meetings, council rejected a call for an amendment that would allow up to 80 villas on the site, which would be sold to help fund the development of the historic building. Concerns from the community ranged from traffic to threats posed to endangered and protected species in the Sherbrooke Forest, the Nicholas Gardens and Sassafras Creek. Councillors Noel Cliff and Mike Clarke attended both meetings, which they described as productive and informative. Nine in single-car crash THE horror year on the Yarra Ranges’ roads continued on Tuesday, 6 October, when a teenager died in a single-car crash in Mount Evelyn. In the crash, eight others were hospitalised. At the time, police said a Holden Commodore had been travelling south along Hereford Road, Mount Evelyn, at 6.15pm when the driver
lost control and crashed the car into a pole. All occupants were injured and taken to various hospitals. The female driver, 22, was on her Probationary 2 (green P-plate) licence and was taken to the Alfred Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The toddler died after a tree fell on the room where he was sleeping at the family’s The Patch home. At the funeral, mother Suzie spoke of buying Eli a water pistol, saying that “no-one was safe from him aim”. “But then came that cheeky smile, and once again, he got away with it,” she said at the time.
Brothers charged over rape BROTHERS from Mount Evelyn and Olinda faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, 7 November, charged with the abduction and rape of a girl, 14, in Geelong. At the time, police believed that four men approached a teenage boy and girl about 4am in a park, where the boy was assaulted and the girl sexually assaulted. She was allegedly taken to a house by the men, where another sexual assault occurred. A further two men were arrested in relation to this matter. Community mourns Eli HUNDREDS of mourners turned out to the Discovery Church in Mount Evelyn on Saturday, 14 March, to farewell Eli Marnock.

Who will get the bragging rights? For the adrenalin junkies, how about three heart-pumping ‘hot laps’ in a race-prepared vehicle. Our resident race car driver will get your heart started with lift off and road hugging turns that defy gravity as you ‘white knuckle’ it and carve an impression on the rugged cliffs of the world famous circuit. Follow in the footsteps of racing superstars on a daily guided circuit tour featuring a MotoGP sound simulation and access to exclusive and restricted areas such as the control tower, media centre, pit roof, and of course that ‘hero’ photo opportunity on the winner’s podium. Tranquil water gardens lead you through to the viewing mound capturing some of the most unique and invigorating panoramic views of the circuit and Bass Straight. After all the excitement, Champion’s Bar and Cafe delivers with its fresh menu with plenty of choices. Fantastic coffee and delicious and decedent home-made cakes, slices, muffins, pastries, sausage rolls and pies hit the spot The gift shop at the Visitor Centre has a wide selection of stylish apparel, merchandise and souvenirs to choose from so you can take a memento home with you. present at many important events in the Dandenong Ranges, capturing the images that matter to the community. Rob has a handy knack of bringing out the personality of his subject, in addition to his incredible use of colour and light.
His work not only brightens the Mail’s news pages with movement and colour, but helps to provide an invaluable resource for those living in the Dandenong Ranges. Below is just a sample of Rob’s work in 2015.

Sport
Back with Twenty20 action By STEVE BROWN THE Ferntree Gully and District Cricket Association donned the coloured clothing after resuming from the Christmas break with a Twenty20 match to complete Round 8 of the Norm Reeves Shield competition. At Fairpark Reserve, Monbulk batsman Billy Hicken strode to the crease with his side in all sorts of trouble at 4/23 against Johnson Park. Playing orthodox cricket strokes, Hicken played his best innings as he and Tom Watson put on 80 for the sixth wicket. At the completion of their allotted overs, the Hawks compiled a competitive 5/136 with Hicken unbeaten on 83. Left-arm medium fast bowler Liarne DeSilva returned to Johnson Park after a year interstate and he finished with 3/15 from four overs. In reply, the Sharks were on target to get the points but when legspinner Chris Coen snared the prize wicket of Ben Stallworthy the run rate became increasingly difficult and they went down by 16 runs. Coen took three wickets in a fine team fielding performance with all catches held. Ferntree Gully consolidated their position in the top four with a solid win over Mountain Gate by 41 runs.
Bryce Galvin (66) combined with Wayne McInerney, who played Twenty20 for Camberwell Magpies Premier Grade a few seasons ago, to set the Gators 5/182 for victory. McInerney remained 54 not out in what was a polished performance for the Blues. Mountain Gate, desperate for a win to remove relegation pressure, was unable to maintain the run rate and finished on 6/141. Top side Knoxfield were given a fright by bottom team Knox Gardens but came through in the end by winning with three balls to spare. They say winning form is good form and the Knights were wellserved by Feaver Medallist Luke Scanlan (40) and Jayden Raab with 35. Left-arm swing bowler Zac Flintoff bowled a tidy line to collect 3/12 while Mitch Gregory’s 42 was not enough to get the Falcons over the line. The Basin Bears won their third game on the trot, avenging an earlier loss in the season to Upwey-Tecoma. It was the usual Basin suspects - Best, Rundle and Ryan - contributing with the bat compiling 6/185 and the target proved too many for the Tigers as Jarryd Debernadi claimed 3/17. Upwey-Tecoma managed 7/153 with veteran Dain Howe tops scor-
ing with 37. Eildon Park meant business when they journeyed to Belgrave, easily accounting for the Magpies by 98 runs in a one-sided affair. Once the Morris Brothers got a start it was an uphill battle as the home side managed 88 chasing 186. Association and Eildon Park captain Cameron Cosstick took the best figures for the round with 4/23. Reeves Shield Knoxfield 6/123 (L. Scanlan 40, Raab 35, Flintoff 3/12) def Knox Gardens 9/120 (Gregory 42). Monbulk 5/136 (Hicken 83*, Desilva 3/15) def Johnson Park 8/120 (Coen 3/32). Eildon Park 6/186 (C. Morris 65, B. Suns team out of competition By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE Sherbrooke Suns Basketball Association has withdrawn from the 2016 State Championship Men’s competition. The association notified the Big V Basketball League following the Annual General Meeting on 28 November 2015. The Sherbrooke Suns cited focusing their training on their next group of talent in their Youth League teams as reason for the withdrawal. Despite the withdrawal of the men’s team from the completion, Sherbrooke will continue to field a senior women’s team and two Molten Victorian Youth Championship teams. The Melbourne Tigers Basketball Association has also withdrawn teams from the Big V league with a focus on competing in the South East Australian Basketball League instead. The withdrawal of these two teams leaves the league with a 12 team roster in the State Championship Men’s division. Big V CEO Julie Anderson said the loss of two teams will not diminish the excitement of the 2016 Big V Basketball calendar. “In 2016, State Championship Men will feature 12 exciting and highly competitive teams,” she said. “This is exemplified by some of the amazing talent that has been added already to strengthen the team’s rosters.”
