Young lives lost By KATH GANNAWAY
"Feeling like this is enough. Too many people taken from us too early." Facebook post. 148770 Picture: KATH GANNAWAY The driver, 17, and another passenger, also 17, were also local footballers. The crash which took the life of 16-year-old Amber Beard in Mount Evelyn in October was a scene of absolute carnage. There were nine people in the car aged from 16 to 26 and no-one came
away without injury. The driver, a 22-year-old former Healesville resident was critically injured, as was her 26-year-old male passenger. Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Graeme Rust said the jump in road deaths was disturbing.
“Youth is the big one, and it’s preventable,” he said. The impact is something that police speak about every time. The frustration of seeing lives lost and the factors that make it so senseless - no seatbelts, alcohol, drugs, speed ... no licence.

THE death of young people on our roads last year seemed like a never ending story. In terms of impact - immediate and for years to come - there was no doubt in the Mail office that it should be our ‘issue’ of the year. Seven young people died on local roads, around the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges. We’re not alone in bearing this tragic and preventable waste. Figures released last week by the TAC show that across the state young driver and passenger deaths more than doubled last year compared with 2014. It’s not just the deaths, the life-affecting injury is something that is buried in time. Often, it’s not the driver who becomes the statistic. They end up in court, usually with the broken families beside them, and who even knows how they manage not only the legal repercussions, but the guilt and regret that they must own. In March, 21-year-old Charlie Robertson died on Milners Road in Launching Place. Two 20-year-olds were fighting for their lives and two others had minor injuries. Sharmaine Blyth, 19, from Cockatoo died in April when her car ran off the road and hit a tree at Yellingbo. The deaths at Avonsleigh in July of teenagers Sharn Walker, Felisha Allen and Jason Breakwell, the girls still at school, sent ripples of shock and grief across the region. Jake Mitchell survived that crash. Their involvement with the Emerald Football/Netball Club was part of a network of sport and school which connects young people from towns right across Yarra Ranges. The football/netball community was once again hit by tragedy in August when Yarra Glen footballer, 16-year-old Cooper Ratten died in a crash on Glenview Road.
No-one is immune. “It can be a lot of the same police officers attending collisions that are also involved across their communities as well,” Acting Sgt Rust said. “It’s not only the families that are impacted, it’s emergency services, police and other close friends, as well as family,” He said drug-driving was an emerging and disturbing trend. In the Lilydale Highway Patrol office alone from March last year 214 people were sent off to be tested after initial samples indicated drug use. Acting Sgt Rust said that doesn’t take into account those detected by other police units working in the region. Yarra Ranges Mayor and paramedic working in the Yarra Ranges, Jason Callanan, said rural and regional areas had been hit hardest when it came to the road toll. “Getting your licence is one of the best things that kids can do, as far as their independence and their ability to go out and get employment, but they’ve got to understand that the vehicle they are driving can be a danger, and they really need to understand the consequences of any risk-taking behaviour.” Across the state, TAC figures show that 22 of the young people who died were on regional roads. He said everyone had to shoulder the responsibility for keeping each other safe on the roads. “Whether it’s speaking up from the passenger seat when you see something unsafe, or just talking to a mate if you have concerns about their driving, these are things that could prevent a tragedy,” he said. He urged parents to stay involved with their children’s driving after they move on from L-plates and to talk to them about avoiding risky situations. In 2016, headlines like ‘Pain won’t stop’, ‘Birthday tragedy’ and ‘Tribute to Angels’ we can all do without.

beaters’ Possum Action Plan’ is released recommending massive tree planting projects to support captive-bred possums, but no stop to logging. Healesville Hospital got an additional $1million funding from the State Government making for an $8.8million and the consusltant’s Option Paper is released in December. Box Hill Institute is named in October as taking over the former Swinburne Campus, and the Healesville sawmill site is back on the council agenda with a new $23million plan. Disappointment for Warburton as the State Government knocks back an application for $3million funding for the cycle hub and Yarra Ranges Council opts for a private sale of the Warburton Caravan Park over a bid by the local community bank. Healesville firefighter and United Firefighter’s Union member, Mick Tisbury, welcomed the closure of the CFA’s Fiskville training facility in March as a Parliamentary Hearing got underway. Thieves, hoons, drug raids and vandals featured in police reports with cigarettes, segways, trailers, machinery, plants, batteries, fuel, sunglasses, a life-saving defibrillator, ride-on mowers, prescription medication and cash among the loot stolen throughout the year. van and other equipment stolen in March and other community organisations, including CFA and Yarra Glen Men’s Shed also took hits. In June four people were charged after police raided homes in Healesville as part of a crystal methamphetamine (ICE) investigation. On the plus side, CCTV cameras were installed in Healesville and Yarra Junction townships, fulfilling a federal government election promise. Things got ugly when wasps, in plague proportions, killed two sheep in Don Valley. There were some ugly court cases as well. Andrew Carl Albert Klaussner, 40, was sentenced to 19 years in jail in June for the murder of his partner Elizabeth Barnes at Yarra Junction in 2013 and, in September, Sharee Hastings was sentenced to four years jail after concocting a plan to lure a Warburton man to a severe beating at Yellingbo. December saw a 72-year-old Healesville man jailed for sexual assaults going back more than 40 years. In other court cases, Yarra Glen father, Ricky Stephens was jailed in relation to the death of his daughter, Sophie, in a buggy crash in 2013. After three years, the Coroner’s Court ruled that the death of 23-year-old David Sinclair in Warburton on 2 June, 2012, was unintentional.

2015 was a year of the good (and lots of it) the bad, and the ugly. The Gallipoli Centenary was huge with two special editions in April. We paid tribute in a bumper 32-page edition to the local boys and men who stepped onto the beaches of hell in 1915 as Anzacs and highlighted the many local projects and events that marked the centenary. In ‘Solemn Remembrance’, we presented a two-page pictorial of how our communities honoured them with parades and services from Healesville, Yarra Junction, Warburton, Millgrove and Wandin. That same year, 1915, the Warburton Fire Brigade was formed and 2015 saw a year of centenary celebration, commemoration and recognition for the past and present members and the community they serve. Among other 2015 milestones were Wandin North Primary School’s centenary, Warburton Primary School marked 140 years of education in the town, Yarra Glen’s pre-school celebrated half a centenary and St Aloysius Catholic Parish marked 125 years. Some institutions that didn’t last the year however, were Warburton’s Cerini Community Centre, Healesville’s historic Mission Church, exiled to Yarra Glen, Healesville’s Community 3777 community group and the Red Cross mobile blood donation service which pulled out of Healesville after 13 years. The Mail again partnered up with the TAC to try to drive the road toll down through Talk the Toll features. Despite all that, the loss was immense. Yarra Glen mum Kelly Crowley and son Ethan lost their lives in March and in September Coldstream mum Deborah Kennedy’s death in a motorbike crash left that community devastated. Youth deaths shocked us all. In April, 21-yearold Charlie Robertson died at Yarra Junction and Sharmaine Blyth, 19 died at Yellingbo. Two months later Sharn Walker, Jason Breakwell and Felisha Allen lost their lives at Avonsleigh, and in August 16-year-old Cooper Ratten died in a fatal rollover in Yarra Glen. Another horror crash in October saw 16-year-old Amber Beard die at Mount Evelyn. Perennial issues which made news in 2015 included logging, the future of Healesville Hospital, the Black Saturday bushfires, the Great Forest National Park, Narconon, rubbish dumping, Swinburne University and the proposed Warburton Mountain Bike Hub. February saw a $300million settlement for the Murrindindi-Marysville class action involving over 12,100 claims, and in December the Coroner found that the cause of that fire was a fallen power line. AusNet rejected the finding. A new environment group, Warburton Forest Action, is set up to push for the Great Forest National Park in March. In May Environment Minister Lisa Neville announces “everything is on the table with a new industry taskforce to look at logging and the future of Leadbeater’s possum. Federal Environment Minister, Greg Hunt, chairs a Threatened Species summit in July aimed at ‘turning around the trajectory’ for endangered mammals and birds and a month later a ‘Lead-

2015 – THE YEAR THAT WAS Left: Among many achievements, Warburton Fire Brigade, celebrated 100 years of service to their community and surrounds. 148746 Below: The rescue of Candy at Hoddles Creek was a heartwarming story of teamwork and determination. Her rescuers - Dorothy Farmer, Dallas Barber, Bec Picknell, Sarah Marshall, Mitchell Farmer, Dr Simon Bray, Russell Wulf, and Robert Marshall. 148746
Above: A return of funding for the Eastern Community Legal Service was good news delivered by Casey MP Tony Smith. 148746 Right: Healesville hosted the Women on Farms Gathering in March. 148746 There was plenty of good news, and much to inspire in our pages over the year, though some of it was bittersweet. We lost community treasures who had contributed throughout their lives, and even in death, inspired. Among them were Ronnie Howard, Athol Egeberg, Bruce Oliver, Val Sheehan, Bru Breasley, Denise Garratt, Peter Low, Roger Kirkham, Jim Crow, Gayle Burgess, Walter Lawrence and Kathy Higgins. Two programs that had lost funding were re-
funded - the Eastern Community Legal Centre and the Boys Will Be Men programs. Other funding included Yarra Junction Primary School got $2.1million for a long-overdue upgrade, Adcare op-shop donated $1000 each to five local schools, Steels Creek and Warburton East got funding under the Mobile Phone Black Spot program, Upper Yarra Market Committee gave $1000 each to eight local fire brigades, Rosie Hellicar, 10, shed her locks to raise more than $1500 for Koha Cafe, Yarra Junction’s
Purple Church (EACH) got $500,000 funding for redevelopment, $108,000 for Coranderrk Aboriginal Station and $175,000 for the Helmeted Honeyeater Recovery Program. On the rural scene, Healesville hosted the Women on Farms Gathering and the Big Sprout was launched at Coldstream, but the future of free-range farming was put in doubt with Council abandoning plans to put the proposed Amendment C146 on Intensive Animal Husbandry to and Independent Planning Panel.
The Victorian Electoral Commission Review opted for a three ward/three councillor model, going against Yarra Ranges Council’s preference for the status quo of nine, one-councillor wards. There were awards too numerous to mention, and some great sporting achievements to celebrate in a year that highlighted both the diversity of the Yarra Valley communities, and the qualities and characteristics that connect them. See page 21 for more ’good news’ photos.

Jacinta is an all-rounder By KATH GANNAWAY HEALESVILLE Primary School all-rounder, Jacinta Scragg, has been awarded the 2015 Tricia O’Reilly Scholarship. The $500 scholarship is awarded each year in memory of 12-year-old Healesville student Tricia O’Reilly who died in August 2001 when she was struck by a truck in Healesville. The 15th scholarship, which goes to a student moving on to Healesville High School, was awarded at the final school assembly in December. Tricia was the youngest member of the O’Reilly family to attend Healesville Primary and was in her first year at high school when she died. Her father, Peter O'Reilly, and sisters Danielle Mullens and Cheryl O’Reilly, and her niece Selina, attended the presentation. The award pays tribute to the qualities Tricia exhibited during her school life - being academically accomplished, interested and involved in school activity, organised and conscientious in always doing their best. They are also the sort of person who is sporty, cheerful, funloving, respected and popular. Jacinta represents those qualities and was put forward as a very worthy 2015 recipient.
Jacinta Scragg, centre, with from left: Healesville Primary School principal Cameron Heath, Gayle Shelley representing Healesville High School, Healesville Police Sergeant Stewart Thompson and Peter O'Reilly. Accepting the award, she said it was very much a huge surprise and a great way to finish her time at Healesville Primary. “School is what I enjoy doing and I think I have grown up here and tried to achieve those qualities,” she said. “I am over the moon to be moving on now to Healesville High School,” she said. The scholarship was insti-
gated by the trucking company involved and organised through local police sergeant Tony Van Gorp to maintain the privacy of the company. In more recent years, local bitumen transport company, Gornroamin, owned by former SES Controller Karen Piccone, has kept the scholarship going with a donation of $500. The money goes towards Year 7 education expenses at Healesville High School.

Bushfires came close to the township of Wandin.
Wedding a hot affair By PETER DOUGLAS MOTHER of the bride Jane Bennett spoke recently about her daughter’s wedding, which almost didn’t happen due to a fire scare at Wandin on 19 December. She said the fire had threatened to halt her daughter’s wedding, but the bridal party and guests managed to see it through. Louise Bennett managed to marry the love of her life, Brody Lucas. Jane said the happy pair faced numerous challenges on the big day. “Not only a heat wave, and no air-conditioning in her bridal suite, but a fire loomed at the door of the wonderful Mont De Lancey Homestead.” She said a big oak tree supplied shade and everybody showed bravery by pushing on. Jane also praised the work of the attending CFA units.
The wedding of Louise Bennett and Brody Lucas took place despite the threat of a bushfire.
Letters Gayle storm in teacup REGARDING the controversy surrounding Melbourne Renegades’ cricketer, Chris Gayle, this is surely a storm in a teacup on a slow news day. If you are a cricketer player, how dare anyone step outside their designated box and flirt. If you are Miley Cyrus, don’t play cricket - just twerk! This is sounding like a demarcation dispute. Does Chris Gayle think that he is God’s gift to women? Probably. He is wealthy, good looking, has style and flair to spare - and all his own teeth. If a try-hard ugly comedian had pulled this stunt, no story. It would just be a bit more cringe television. Why not let the cricketers spread the love. After all, they don’t complain about it in tennis? Stanley R. Burgess, Healesville.

I'D like to make a few observations about community music in Healesville. A colleague and I ran a marimba/vibraphone/xylophone program at a school in Knox. This program was started by me in 1989 at Woori Yallock Primary School and finished at the end of 2011 at Boronia Heights Primary School. Since then, I have not been active in any music at all, but interestingly, my many instruments will be gifted to a K-12 school in a nearby suburb.
This was a bolt out of the blue for me. My involvement will be as a mentor, not so much as a teacher. I write this letter with many regrets. I have followed tuned percussion programs for kids around the world via Youtube. The sad reality is that after perusing children-oriented programs, especially programs for socially disadvantaged kids, I have never been approached and indeed have been actively rejected or dissuaded by schools and organisations in the Yarra Valley in spite of my best endeavours. The reasons always seemed to be that tuned percussion was always adequately covered. Not so my particular type of program, which was probably unique in Australia. Unfortunate for everybody, I guess, as I had enormous energy and ideas and my instruments were orchestral, not merely schools’ quality. In the US and the middle Americas, there are hundreds of community music programs for children. It is indeed gratifying to know that these programs exist, and the level of performance achieved and the joy on the faces of the kids is wonderful. Many of the music programs are centred around Portland, Oregon, and California. So much for the myth that America is bland, loud and vacuous. I am chuffed that these programs exist, giving the joy of making music to anyone who is interested. My successor will keep ‘the marimba belles - and beaus’ alive. Graham Answerth, Mt Toolebewong.

Film inspired by garden
Cindy McLeish MP
Searching the internet for news of the Marysville community after the devastation, Ms Richey said they came across pictures of Bruno’s famous garden. “I kept coming back to them over the next year or so and wondered whether there might be a story in it,” she said. She held off for a time, before driving back to Marysville to ask Bruno for his thoughts on making a movie based on his garden. The idea took off and the film was shot over 16 months on a profitshare basis. There are lots of familiar Marysville Triangle faces in the film, inADVERTISEMENT
cluding Bruno Torf and Jacob Vulfs from Narbethong who plays the blind man’s son. “The people were amazing and just so great to work with,” Ms Richey said. “There is so much talent out there.” A preview screening has already been held at Federation Square in Melbourne and there will be a special screening for Marysville and district residents this week. Tickets for the Healesville screening, at 7.30pm on Thursday 14 January, are available from The Memo.

A FILM inspired by the characters in Bruno’s Sculpture Garden in Marysville, will have its official launch at The Memo in Healesville on Thursday, 14 January. Made on a micro budget, The Weatherman’s Umbrella is a delightful movie that features the now flourishing sculpture garden on the banks of the Steavenson River, local actors, crew, musicians and artists. Film-maker and screenwriter, Anne Richey, said her hopes for the film was to get it out to a wide audience. Local girl, Lily Morrow, plays
the lead character, Sarah, who goes to stay in Marysville with her greatgrandfather, played by screen industry legend John Flaus. The visit for the spoilt, little city girl takes a magical twist when she becomes involved in a quest to find the Weatherman’s lost umbrella. Without the umbrella, there will be no more rain. Lily, now 12, is already furthering her singing career, coming fourth overall in the hit South Korean show KPop Star last year. Ms Richey said she fell in love with Marysville when she attended a screenwriters’ conference about a year before the 2009 fires.

Fun for all ages at the circuit NOW more than ever the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is a destination for the whole family, with many hours of entertainment and enjoyment on offer. Strap yourself into the state-ofthe-art Sodi RT8 Go Karts for an exhilarating session on the 750m scale replica of the circuit. Push out a series of hot laps to beat the clock or challenge your mates. New matching tandem karts are equipped with duel controls so the kids don’t miss out and can participate in the full interactive karting experience, which they haven’t been able to do before. After a complete renovation, the History of Motorsport showcases the dawn of motorsport on Phillip Island starting with the first Australian Grand Prix in 1928 through to present-day racing. The display has many articles, images and racing vehicles that will capture your imagination. Race your family or your mates and experience the fun on Australia’s largest four-lane GP Slot Car Track, an exact replica of the circuit. Test your skills or challenge your mates to a simulated race on the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. Go flat out down Gardner Straight, through ultra-fast Doohan Corner, slide through Stoner, thread your way through Siberia and slip stream up the back straight. Watch out for the hairpin at the bottom of Lukey Heights.
Who will get the bragging rights? For the adrenalin junkies, how about three heart-pumping ‘hot laps’ in a race-prepared vehicle. Our resident race car driver will get your heart started with lift off and road hugging turns that defy gravity as you ‘white knuckle’ it and carve an impression on the rugged cliffs of the world famous circuit. Follow in the footsteps of racing superstars on a daily guided circuit tour featuring a MotoGP sound simulation and access to exclusive and restricted areas such as the control tower, media centre, pit roof, and of course that ‘hero’ photo opportunity on the winner’s podium. Tranquil water gardens lead you through to the viewing mound capturing some of the most unique and invigorating panoramic views of the circuit and Bass Straight. After all the excitement, Champion’s Bar and Cafe delivers with its fresh menu with plenty of choices. Fantastic coffee and delicious and decedent home-made cakes, slices, muffins, pastries, sausage rolls and pies hit the spot The gift shop at the Visitor Centre has a wide selection of stylish apparel, merchandise and souvenirs to choose from so you can take a memento home with you. FROM humble beginnings 30 years ago, Funfields has developed into Melbourne’s favourite theme park. With a host of quality attractions, featuring a tantalising mix of both wet and dry rides, guests are assured of a truly awesome day of outdoor family fun. Enjoy the alpine toboggan slide, gokarts, swinging pirate ship and bumper boats, or test your skills at the ‘all new’ Treasure Cove mini-golf course. In fantastic news for adventure-seekers, three new rides have recently been introduced. These include the Kraken Racer, a fourtube intertwining aqua racer that will see riders twist and turn towards victory. The Samba Balloon ride offers a colourful opportunity to glide up, up and away. Meanwhile, the new Mini Ferris Wheel is sure to be an instant classic. When you’re ready to cool off, head over to Wacky Waters, a magical aquatic playground with over 20 interactive features and Australia’s only Hydro Storm. If slides are more your thing, then you’re spoilt for choice at Funfields. The Blackout and Wipeout raft waterslides offer two exciting and very different experiences. Then, there are the two Splashdown Waterslides. For the extreme thrill-seekers, there is the newest attraction, Typhoon. This is the world’s longest Pro Slide CannonBowl ride.

Perfect day for the Cup By KATH GANNAWAY GUADALCANAL powered home on Saturday to take out the Healesville Amateur Racing Club’s 2015 Healesville Cup. The 9-year-old gelding came in just ahead of its stablemate Shanghai Rooster, making for a spectacular cup run for Sale trainer Reg Manning and jockey Toby Lake. The $4000 Sutton Grange Winery Healesville Cup was the main attraction on the sixrace program, run in perfect race-day weather before a crowd of more than 3000 racegoers. HARC president, David Purcell, said it had been a perfect quadrella - good numbers, great racing, exceptional crowd behaviour and sunshine. “People just came for a really good time and we’re pretty happy that that’s what they got here today,” he said.
Entertainment included rides, races and Kelly Sports for the kids and fantastic music by Healesville band The Humbuckin’ Pickups. Mr Purcell said the Kelly Sports activities were a first and proved popular with the older children. Another first was the mobile Electronic Betting Terminal, an initiative of Country Racing Victoria and a first trial at a country race meeting. TAC were on board again this year providing giveaways promoting their safe driving messages and providing punters with a breath test. The next meeting at Healesville is on Saturday 30 January. Yea Racing Club will hold a meeting the week before on 23 January.
Ace King set the pace winning the first race on the picturesque Healesville track. 148772

WARS OPENING
A Mail News Advertising Feature
Seeing Star Wars in style IN CONJUNCTION with the 17 December world-wide 12.01am opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Croydon Cinemas held a red carpet premiere event with all the glitz and glamour one would see at a major Hollywood premiere. While walking the red carpet, hundreds of diehard Star Wars fans were treated to searchlights in the evening sky, while listening to the Luther College Soul Band perform Star Wars musical scores. Guests were also eligible to win one of six Gold passes valued at over $5000 each. The general worldwide reaction from patrons after seeing the film has been exceptionally positive, so much so it has been one of the highestgrossing films ever screened at Croydon Cinemas. Meanwhile, Croydon Cinemas is introducing reserved seating for peak sessions. The ability to guarantee a seat at the cinema will make life easier for movie fans, who will no longer have to endure the uncertainty of guaranteeing a seat or having to wait in long queues. Reserved or numbered seats removes any doubt about the availability of good seats at peak times, enabling cinema-goers to roll up just before the movie starts or head straight to the candy bar. Director of Croydon Cinemas, George Aleksiunas, said the change meant families and groups of friends would no longer have to separate just to find a seat. “No more will families need to go searching for seats just to sit together during our very busy school holiday periods,” Mr Aleksiunas said. Movie-goers can simply log on to the Croydon Cinemas website and choose their seats.
Guests received the red-carpet treatment for the opening night of the new Star Wars movie. 148800 This comes with perfect timing, with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is on its way to becoming one of the biggest movie releases in history. For further information, contact Croydon Cinemas on 9725 6544.

Lake Eildon National Park, Rubicon State forest, Big River State forest, Cathedral Range State Park, Marysville State forest, Yarra Ranges National Park and Toolangi State forest The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and Parks Victoria are committed to protecting and enhancing the natural values of parks, reserves and state forests across the state. Examples of this conservation management are the control of introduced plant and animal species which can impact on these values. As part of an ongoing strategy, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning is laying buried baits containing sodium luroacetate (1080 poison) on public land for the control of foxes. Baiting commences Monday, 18 January 2016 and will continue until Friday, 16 December 2016. Baits have been laid at strategic sites and other known areas of fox habitat within the above mentioned forests and parks, and within the vicinity of townships Eildon, Rubicon, Taggerty, Buxton, Marysville, Narbethong, Healesville, Warburton and Toolangi. 1080 poison signs have been posted throughout the baited areas and members of the public who are living, visiting or working in the above named areas are advised to take particular care not to disturb or interfere with bait stations. Domestic dogs and cats are particularly susceptible to 1080 poison and should be under effective control, muzzled or kept away from the poisoned areas. Further details may be obtained by contacting Emily Borton at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning at Alexandra on (03) 5772 0200. www.delwp.vic.gov.au Customer Service Centre 136 186 1212818-EG02-16 ZO630002

Desmond claims 2015 trophy By JOHN WOOD WOODS POINT GUN CLUB A GLORIOUS sunny day greeted the shooters at the Woods Point Gun Club recently for the final competition of 2015. The club grounds had been mown and whipper-snipped to perfection by willing club members. Not for the faint-hearted, the four events weren’t the standard type occurring during the year but novelty events that were cunningly concocted to test the mettle of the competitors and give them an irrational sense of fun and enjoyment. Thirty seven shooters and nu-
merous visitors made it a very busy, noisy and fun day. Winners in all events won a full leg of ham with half legs for the runner ups and other prizes for the minor placings. Surprise targets were thrown that, if broken, won the shooter a bottle of wine. After the four events concluded, those who hadn’t won anything at that stage went into a shoot-off for the ‘Poor Bugga’ prizes. These were a leg of ham for the winning ‘Poor Bugga’ and a half-ham for second. There was also a half ham for the best Junior shooter plus
prizes for the overall best score of the day (High Gun), and a half ham for the worst score of the day (Low Gun). All in all, there were about 28 hams and half-hams won. The club ladies put on an abundant tasty lunch and an even more magnificent afternoon tea. At the presentations, Phillip Desmond was presented with the 2015 High Gun Trophy by longterm sponsor Dave Rosenhain. Thank you to all the shooters, helpers and volunteers that made this a memorable shoot. The next shoot at Woods Point is on Sunday 24 January, with the AGM commencing at 10am.
The committee and members of the Woods Point Gun Club celebrated an enjoyable shoot. 148766

Some cheer for new year By CHRIS ANDERSON AFTER filling their faces full of Christmas fare and celebrating the turn of a new year, cricketers across the Yarra Valley recommenced the 2015’16 season in perfect cricket conditions. In DJ Strachan Shield, the top four teams have moved clear of the bottom few somewhat, making it imperative for those lower sides to start winning if they are to bridge the gap. Woori Yallock maintained their stranglehold on the top rung of the ladder with a comprehensive victory over Hoddles Creek. Batting first, and despite batting through their allotted overs, Hoddles Creek couldn’t manage to muster enough momentum to push themselves to a challenging total. Captain Mick Batten (30) did his bit early in the innings with a solid knock, but even his stay was too brief as the loss of continual wickets kept denting the Wombats’ run rate. Will Trotter (23*) did his best to put the finishing touches on the innings, but consistent and challenging bowling from the medium pace of Dan Mock (4/16), from the leg-spin of Stephen Morgan (2/24) and the rest of the Tigers’ bowlers restricted the total to 9/138. Woori Yallock’s batting line up is a daunting one, and one that goes deep, but with brilliant early form from the top order, it has left the middle to lower order with minimal exposure to batting out in the middle. So with a bit of a shuffle with the line-up, the Tigers were able to expose these batsmen to valuable time in the middle, while still making short work of the target. Ryan Smith continued his remarkable form this season with a well-made 48, while he was well supported by his partner in crime Mick Dwyer (39). Despite the best efforts of Stuart Simmonds (2/29), Woori Yallock cruised to the total with six wickets in hand, and with minimal fuss. Woori Yallock now faces an enticing match up against Healesville which have enjoyed the extended break courtesy of the bye. Healesville is proving themselves to be a much improved side, but if they are to prove their credentials, they need to challenge a great all round side such as Woori Yallock. On the other hand, what proved to be a promising start to the season for Hoddles Creek is fast becoming a distant memory. They face Yarra Junction next week and if they were to lose that game, then they would find themselves three games out of the four with finals almost out of calculations. Yarra Junction missed their chance to take a
big scalp and entrench themselves in the top four when they fell short of an experienced and skilled Warburton-Millgrove outfit. Yarra Junction batted first, and, like Hoddles Creek, despite a steady batting performance, their batting guns couldn’t lift them to an imposing total. Young star Cam Spaulding looked as if he could control the innings from the outset, but he fell short of a dominating innings on 35. That was pretty much the story for the entire Eagles’ innings. Experience matters in the shorter forms of the game and there are few more experienced than Mick Walker. He led the Burras bowlers with masterful figures of 4/25 and helped his team keep the hand brake on the Yarra Junction innings finally restricting the visitors to 9/136. Yarra Junction does possess the bowlers to challenge a batting side with disciplined lines and lengths, and gave the home side some wobbles with three early wickets. David Lever has built a reputation over recent years as one of the finest all-rounders in the Association, with an ability to brutally take a bowling side apart. Before Christmas, Lever started to hit his straps and he wasn’t slowed by the break as his unbeaten innings of 60 knocked the stuffing out of Eagles’ challenge. With Walker (32no) capping off a fine day, the Burras cruised to a seven-wicket victory and consolidated their position in the top four. Yarra Junction needs to put the loss behind them as a victory next week against Hoddles Creek would put a dent in the ability for the chasing pack to claim their position in the top four. Warburton-Millgrove have quietly gone about their business so far this season and now find themselves in a position to challenge for a top two spot. They would be eyeing off an easy kill against the lowly Mount Evelyn to enhance these prospects. Mount Evelyn hosted Seville in a battle between two teams who have found the going tough so far this season, so both teams entered the contest with high hopes of kick starting 2016 with a win. Seville won the toss and batted. Despite finding scoring tough early against some disciplined bowling, they managed to keep wickets in-hand. A couple of old heads battled to keep their teams ahead in the contest, as Chris Anderson’s effective spell (2/13) was countered by a steadying knock from Seville’s captain Andy Kay
(48no) as he sought to lead his side to a sizeable total. Unfortunately for Kay, his team mates didn’t have the ability to match his skill, and despite doggedly sticking with him, they lost their wickets too regularly. In the end the visitors posted 8/143, leaving the contest in the balance against a fragile Mount Evelyn batting line up. Most of the action in Mount Evelyn chase occurred in the first four overs. After Brad Jones took to Mark Sandfort for 31 runs off the second over, speedster Matt Hadlum and Kay prized two early wickets and probably should’ve netted a couple more in the preceding overs, keeping this contest on a knife’s edge. Unfortunately for the visitors, joining Jones at the wicket was the returning Kane Jones. Refreshed from his break, and with a clear mind, he was able to assist his brother in breaking down the Blues’ bowlers. With Brad’s aggressive approach netting him 76 not out, including seven 4s and six 6s, the pair were able to take advantage of an inexperienced bowling line up, while not taking too much risk. Kane (55) moved quietly to his half century. With the partnership garnering over one hundred runs, this contest was over before the midinnings break with the Rovers keeping seven wickets in hand. The win has restored some confidence for Mount Evelyn as they look to regain some pride and respect among the competition. They will view next week’s contest against Warburton-Millgrove, as their opportunity to claim a big scalp. Meanwhile, Seville have the bye, and will take stock for the run home with a view to continuing the development of their young team. DJ Strachan Shield Hoddles Creek 9/138 (M. Batten 30, W. Allan has a day out WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY, 6 January – Stableford: With all members coming back refreshed after the holiday break, little were they to know they would witness a ‘rare treat’. One of the club’s esteemed ‘elder statesmen’, Allan Hubbard, achieved something that could only be matched by a hole-in-one. Allan ‘beat his age’. Without going into too finer details, Allan is on the higher side of 70 and won the day’s Stableford comp with a massive 45 points. But this is insignificant compared to his stroke score. Off a handicap of 8, Allan went around Warburton in a stunning 68. Very few golfers achieve this feat, but Allan did it with strokes to spare. As you can imagine, he was a tad excited and so was everyone else at presentation. Well done, Allan. Of course, the 45 points won the day for him as well. The runner-up on the day was Gerry Hadfield, with 42 points. After all that, balls went down to 37. The N.T.Ps went to Billy Dunn (9th), P.K. (10), and – surprise, surprise - Allan Hubbard on the tricky 15th. Thursday – Twilight: Back after a twoweek break, and that suited Stan Slusarek just nicely. He won the nine-hole competition with an impressive 23 points. The chasing pack saw four of them level on 21, but Ossie McClay nabbed the runner-up prize. The ball rundown extended to only 20 (no N.T.Ps were recorded). Saturday, 9 January – Stableford: A Grade was won by the ever-consistent ‘Junior’ Cross, with 42 points. He also had a 68 ‘off the stick’. B Grade winner was Trisha Eldridge with 38 points, edging out her husband by one stroke. Balls went down to 34. The N.T.Ps were Kerry Slater (3rd), ‘Junior’ (5th), Leigh Patrick (9th), A.J. (12th) and Peter Fox (15th).
