The What Year In Review made news in 2015 SEE INSIDE
Spirit of service By LACHLAN MOORHEAD OUR people of the year are long dead. But age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. In 2015, on the eve of the Anzac Centenary, Star News paid tribute to the local men and women who put their lives on the line to serve during WWI. Many of them never returned to the suburbs of Berwick, Narre Warren, Cranbourne and their surrounds, the places they once called home. But within our pages their stories came to life, reinforcing not only their rightful place in local history but also as significant chapters in Anzac lore. Readers were told of the baker’s boys – eight men employed by local Narre Warren baker Donald Hartley Rowe, who all enlisted to fight in World War I. A November 1915 edition of the Berwick News reported their names as Harry McGuire, Alf Rooney, Harold Johnstone, Jack Lyons, Fred Lewis, Vic Chitts, Reg Currie and Geo Forrester. Narre Warren and District Family History Group member Jane RivettCarnac spent weeks poring over old records to find out who these eight men were, and helped the News unearth their stories. Some proved easier to identify then others. Mr Rowe, the local baker, is recorded on an electoral roll as having left the Narre Warren district by 1925. We also learned about the Kent brothers, two Narre Warren siblings whose lives were both claimed in the Great War. The first of the Narre Warren siblings to perish in battle was Alfred Ernest Kent, killed in action on 5 May 1916, four weeks after the lance-corporal had sailed from Alexandria to Marseilles. He was 41.
This photo shows nurse Jessie Traill, holding her bicycle loaded with painting equipment, somewhere in the south of France.
BERWICK
PEOPLE OF THE
YEAR
2015 Right: A photo of Sergeant George Arthur Forrester, one of eight men employed by the Narre Warren baker Donald Hartley Rowe.
Far right: A picture of the Kent family. Norman and Alfred, who were killed during WWI, are pictured in the back of the carriage with their governess. Their brother, Charles, is in the front seat next to Mary and Ada. According to notes collated by the Narre Warren and District Family History Group, Alfred was buried in Y Farm Military Cemetery Bois-Grenier, 4000 yards south of Armentieres. Alfred’s younger brother, Norman Archibald Kent, died from a gunshot wound to the chest he sustained while serving on the Western Front in 1917. Norman was wounded on 12 April and died a day later from the injury. He was buried at the Vaulx Main Dressing Station, one and a quarter miles northeast of Bapaume, France. On his tombstone were inscribed the words “Son of A.B. and M.A. Kent Narre Warren, died for King and Country”.
With each story, with each act of bravery, we were continually reminded of the sobering tragedy of war. Rupert Bethune, a Cranbourne State School student, was one of the soldiers to be left behind on the battlefields, never forgotten by his mother Anne Meade when he was killed at only 27 years of age. A private in the 21st Battalion, 8th Reinforcements, when he first enlisted, Rupert died as a lance-corporal serving in the 59th battalion on 19 July 1916. He remains buried in France along with around 3000 other Australian soldiers who were killed on the Western Front during the battle of Fromelles.
Stories were also told of living relatives whose ancestors fought. Carole-Ann Kerford shared a special bond with her late grandfather – she was the first person he really opened up to following his experiences in World War II. It’s with this unique relationship in mind that Carole-Ann from Cranbourne North trekked the Kokoda Track last year. Meanwhile we learned that Harkaway always served as a constant in the life of nurse Jessie Traill, both before and after her service in WWI. When one reads the notes, it’s clear
that in her later life the talented artist Jessie spent much of her time at home in Harkaway, finding sanctuary in the five-acre bush block she had bought in 1912 with her sister, Elsie. Sanctuary, perhaps, from the three and a half years of service she’d given as a Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse (VAD) at the military hospital in Rouyen, France, from 1915. In 2015 the News paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, the returned soldiers, the nurses, the war widows, the living relatives and so many more who embody the spirit of the Anzac. Lest we forget.

Train plan takes flight By GEORGIA WESTGARTH PLANS to transform parts of the Cranbourne-Pakenham rail line into an elevated “sky rail” have been submitted to the State Government a part of their promise to remove 50 level crossings across Victoria by 2022. Reports have outlined the ‘secret’ plans for a raised rail, two to four storeys above street level and running for several kilometres. Shadow Minister for Planning David Davis has hit out at the idea, labelling it a “cheaper option” compared to underground lines and one that would “split communities in half”. “There was a clear promise before the election to put rail lines underground at level crossing sites,” Mr Davis said. “The negative visual and sound impacts will also result in falling property values in the vicinity of the elevated rail line.” But a spokesperson for Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, said the sky rail was just one option for Melbourne’s busiest train line. “We promised to remove every level crossing between Dandenong and Caulfield and we are still considering the best way to do that,“ they said. While Mr Davis has expressed his concerns about how a sky rail could damage small businesses and retailers in the immediate area, RACV Public Policy General Manager, Brian Negus supports the State Government's decision to “explore all options”.
Elevated tracks in Melbourne's CBD. Mr Negus said while most of Melbourne’s recent rail grade separations had been rail-under-road, it should
not be assumed that this was the only way, or the best way of removing level crossings.
“Elevated rail is used successfully around the world and the concept of a so-called ‘sky train’ to replace level
crossings could be feasible at a number of locations in Melbourne,” Mr Negus said.

DESPITE a big push from the City of Casey and Brookland Greens residents, Cranbourne MP Jude Perera has not answered desperate calls for a review into State Government provisions on share housing developments. A powerless Casey council and neighbourhood of angry Cranbourne residents want to change the State Government laws which mean share housing can go ahead without prior council planning approval or consultations with neighbours. And they have had no help from Mr Perera, despite numerous letters from Casey council officers. The site at 5 Concord Place in the ‘upmarket’ Brookland Greens Estate has been subject to several protests and two petitions to stop a proposed development of two 10-place share houses. Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz said the lack of council involvement in such developments was “absurd”.
“These residents are concerned about the impact the rooming house will have on amenity and safety including parking and noise and their concerns are rightly justified,” Cr Aziz said. Prior to Christmas the City of Casey wrote to Mr Perera requesting he make “immediate and strong representations” to Minister for Planning Richard Wynne to review the planning scheme provisions for rooming houses. But Cr Aziz said their correspondence was going unanswered “again”. Cranbourne councillor Geoff Ablett said the City of Casey had been requesting assistance from Mr Perera for almost 12 months. “Mr Perera has done nothing, and hasn’t even responded to letters seeking his involvement. “We are calling for a review ... and as an interim step, amend the planning scheme provisions to prohibit the establishment of further rooming houses (in Casey) without a planning per-
World’s
mit,” Cr Ablett said. Locals have labelled the proposal an “absurd situation”. They fear the type of person the share houses, which could hold up to 20 people, could attract to their estate. Former Casey Councillor Peter Giles, who lives adjacent to the site, approached the City of Casey in December last year proposing court action on behalf of the affected Casey residents. But acting CEO at the City of Casey, Peter Fitchett, said it would be a fruitless legal battle. “Council can only initiate legal proceedings against the development if there was a breach of planning laws,” Mr Fitchett advised. “As it stands, the proposed shared accommodation proposal meets the State Government’s shared accommodation planning provisions. “The City of Casey believes advocacy is far more effective.” Distressed neighbour of the proposed development, Wendy
Martyn, says she will sell up and move if the tenants turn out to be disruptive. “We don’t know who will live there - it could become a halfway house for recovering drug addicts, could be low income earners and we are concerned for our safety and that these houses will lower the whole tone of the area,” Ms Martyn said. Scared for the future of her prestigious and “peaceful” estate Ms Martyn said the share house in Dearing Avenue Cranbourne was a fine example and had pushed people to move elsewhere. “The scary thing is it could happen anywhere in Casey, it’s a law in Victoria and it's going under the radar,” she said. Cr Ablett along with Shadow Minister for Planning Hon David Davis will be speaking to anxious residents at a meeting on Monday 25 at the Cranbourne Turf Club at 6pm. The News unsuccessfully sought comment from Mr Perera.
not so smart By GEORGIA WESTGARTH TWO teenagers were lucky to escape uninjured over the weekend in the latest in a string of armed street robberies throughout Casey targeting mobile phones. After a spate of street robberies targeting mobile phones in November last year, Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Darron Hedge from Narre Warren police said he can’t understand why. “Smart phones are the one thing police can trace,” Act Sen Sgt Hedge said. “But that doesn’t seem to be a deterrence to offenders.” In the latest incident two teenage boys aged 16 and 18 escaped with their phones after they were ap-

proached near Normandy Street, Cranbourne, by a group of males on Monday 11 January at 1am. Armed with a knife, the males of Indian and African appearance in a Commodore and Toyota slowed down near the boys as they walked along South Gippsland Highway and demanded their phones. “The boys were walking home from a party in Cranbourne and were pushed over and threatened,” Act Sen Sgt Hedge said. The pair fled with their phones and no one was injured in the incident. Police said all Casey residents should be on high alert when walking the streets and that they should be aware of how visible their belongings are.

Moved in, ripped off By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A newly-married couple setting up home together had wedding presents stolen in a spate of thefts targeting people moving home. Police said the newly-weds, who had just returned from their honeymoon, were one of two Casey families to be hit while they were in the process of moving into their new homes. Detective Senior Constable Michelle Chiang from the Narre Warren police said: “People moving houses are easy targets for burglar-
ies, because everything’s boxed up ready to go.” Thieves stole several boxes from the couple’s home in Cradle Avenue, Clyde, between 4pm and 6pm on Saturday 9 January. “It was a two-hour turnaround from going to get the next load and they had just returned from their honeymoon that morning - it was all brand new stuff and wedding presents,” Sen Const Chiang said. The previous night a Caucasian male driving a black Commodore was seen leaving the address in Endeavour Hills around the time of
the burglary at midnight on Friday 8 January. Sen Const Chiang said “pretty much everything was stolen” from the Power Street home. “A BBQ, TV, washing machine and some boxes.” The raider forced their way in to the property through a rear timber window and Sen Const Chiang urged anyone moving in or out of the area to be vigilant. “It’s a small trend occurring in Casey and it’s something people who are moving house need to be wary of,” she said.
“If you’re moving house keep garage doors locked and be vigilant at both addresses and watch who is driving past and who’s observing you. “Try and organise someone to stay at the house with the boxes while the other person does the picking and dropping off because it’s easy to forget boxes when your moving dozens of them and often people don’t realise they are missing until they need it.” She appealed for witnesses to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Paying back IT’S disappointing that Ms Caldwell’s letter (Giving Away Our Money, News, 17 December 2015) failed to share the full facts about council’s recent trees and infrastructure focus groups with readers. Ms Caldwell is correct that focus group participants received payment but she failed to mention that participants of the latter focus group were asked to give up seven hours of their time on a Saturday. This is a considerable ask and that’s why it’s only fair that participants were reimbursed for their time. For large scale consultations such as these it’s not unusual for council to make a payment to participants in respect of their time. This is consistent with standard consultation industry practice to pay participants involved in lengthy focus group participation. Given the size of the municipality it’s imperative we have a sample that reflects the city’s demographics, ensuring feedback truly represents the views of the community. This year council will launch its first Community Engagement Strategy. In addition to the recent focus groups, we’re currently undertaking door knock surveys across the municipality to ensure council’s consultation program reflects what residents want. We make no apologies for seeking to improve the way we engage our community. I look forward to seeking your views on the Community Engagement Strategy later in the year. Sam Aziz, Mayor, City of Casey.

Austere warning THE past year was when austerity dominated Federal Government policy. May and December were really very low points in Australian politics in 2015. Due to former Treasurer Joe Hockey’s radical spending cuts in May followed by the current Treasurer Scott Morrison’s cuts in the December budget update, the Australian economy is now set for a long period of underemployment and reduced incomes for middle and lower income groups. Both Joe Hockey and now Scott Morrison have wrongly defined Australia’s economic problem as government spending and advocated the need to make deep budget cuts. Consequently, both Hockey and Morrison’s combined budget decisions in 2015 will strip more than $17 billion over four years from government spending on families, low income earners and community services. The underlying economic problems of unemployment, slow growth and weaknesses in aggregate demand are being ignored. Worst of all, the current Treasurer, Scott Morrison, has reversed a key macro-economic principle.
Cultural climate I take issue with the characterisation of religion as anti-educational (Cult Of Religion, News, 17 December). The subject of religion in schools is not dissimilar to other cultural studies including history, art and the media. In the current climate where Middle Eastern conflict in the name of religion is so topical, it is important that young people are able to understand the plurality and history of religion. Students and their parents should be free to choose whether or not to participate in religious studies. Choice was at the centre of previous policy for special religious studies. But sadly, the state Labor Government has broken its promise and taken that choice away, and I hear Christmas carols are also on the hit list for next year. Ashley Lodder, Berwick.

During periods of low inflation, unemployment, and weak aggregate demand, government spending should be increased. But the Treasurer now insists that any new spending has to be offset by additional savings and cuts. Both the Abbott and Turnbull governments have embraced austerity measures when we really need more government spending, not less. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.
Nation's foundation Regarding the letter Cult of Religion (News, 17 December 2015), I make the following comments. Casey Council’s support for Special Religious Education in state schools is truly educational. Casey parents and students, like all others, need a Bible-based faith. Christianity should be taught in all our state schools as a main part of the curriculum. Real education is about opening the mind to the purposes of God who created us. It is the major reason why our nation has prospered so greatly. When the first school opened in Australia in 1793, the Christian faith was taught, with the Bible as the main textbook. This gave our people the most vital education we all need - a truly sound foundation for our progressive nation. At least some of our councillors do believe this, and thank God for those who do. THE year 2015 had it all. The News reported on all the highs and lows across the wider Berwick and Cranbourne regions, chronicling everything from the heart-warming stories to the controversial scandals. Now the News looks back at the stories that captured our attention and made the year what it was. THE local greyhound industry was rocked by scandal early in 2015 when at least 10 Tooradin trainers were implicated in the live baiting scandal. The country-wide scandal exploded in February when the ABC’s Four Corners program aired damning footage of piglets, possums and rabbits being strapped to lures and ripped apart while they are used as livebait to blood greyhounds. The Tooradin Trial Track and many of its trainers were caught up in the controversy, while the track itself was raided by RSPCA officers and put up for sale in May. Those implicated by Four Corners in the scandal included Tooradin Trail Track owner Stuart Mills, well known Devon Meadows trainer Darren McDonald, fellow Devon Meadows trainer and former GRV official Paul Anderton and Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club president Neville King, who stood down from his position around the time the story broke.

Anthem sparks a perfect storm IT’S the local story that went national. Star News broke the story about Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School’s decision to allow Islamic students to leave a Year 2-6 assembly to avoid singing the Australian national anthem, citing Muharram - a religious month of mourning for Shi’a Muslims. Shortly after the story was published the issue was covered on several television networks, on 3AW and ABC radio, it drew
comment from opinion writers and national columnists, and even a response from Senator Jacqui Lambie and Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison. It was also debated on the ABC’s Q and A program, and Channel Nine’s new equivalent, The Verdict. Star News quoted Lorraine McCurdy, whose grandchildren go to the school, and who attended the school’s assembly and was concerned by the staff’s decision to give Muslim
students the option to not sing the national anthem. She said about “30 to 40” Muslim students left the assembly. Cranbourne Carlisle Primary School principal Cheryl Irving said the decision was made in adherence with Muharram - the Islamic month of mourning associated with Shi’a Muslims in which they do not participate in “joyful events”.

2015 – THE YEAR THAT WAS QUOTES OF THE YEAR “The air ambulance is called so regularly I know its registration number off by heart.” -– Malcolm Robinson said at a protest for a roundabout to be built at the Robinsons Road and Western Port Highway intersection after a 19-yearold girl was killed driving through the treacherous junction in Pearcedale.
“A few Father’s Days ago my sons bought me a new shed to put my lights in because I was running out of room.” – Graham Conder who’s known around town as the Christmas ‘Lights Police’ of Lupin Court, said of his annual light display.
“I just want people to know that we are just like normal people who love Australia and consider loving and serving in Australia a part of our faith and our religion. I want everyone to know that Islam and Muslims are not what they see on their TVs – that is only a very small minority who have hijacked the name of Islam and commit great evils in its name.”
TAKING Tooradin by storm, an old favourite came to life on television last year with Channel Nine’s hit TV show Hotplate hailing in a whole new era for Wings and Fins seafood restaurant. And since its premiere in July 2015 the restaurant and its menu has been renovated with the help of TV judges chef Scott Pickett and restaurant critic Tom Parker Bowles. The tired old decor was jazzed up on the show but, unfortunately, owner Nola DeLorenzo and head chef Lauren Klavins were bumped out of the semi-final. But after making a name for herself and her fresh, flown-in crayfish and view of Tooradin Airport, ‘Nols’ as she became known, is now a household name.
Nols now poses for selfies with fans at the door, pours drinks, takes orders and stands by her every word. “We’re going to have our lovers and our haters but I’m not going to read social media, I don’t need to read it and we were happy to wear the judge’s comments on our table settings,” she said during filming. A Tooradin local of 12 years, Nols is excited to see what the fame will do for the town. “I’ve had an amazing response which is great for the whole area,” she said. Enjoying their success and new shabby chic surrounds Loz and Nols are open for business from Wednesday to Sunday.

Home invasions
Space to come together IT’S a dream that’s touched the nation from state to state and found a home in Casey last September. Marriot Waters own Livvi’s Playspace brought locals together all year through fundraisers for the all-abilities playground and when it was opened on 13 September it did nothing but impress. Butterflies on string filled the sky to the tune of drums and laughter when about 2000 people gathered for its anticipated grand opening. Hundreds of delighted disabled children, carers, parents
and friends filled the grounds on the day to slide, swing, dig and play together. The first of its kind in the region and after two years in the making it was a dream turned reality for volunteer community co-ordinator Therese Howell who said her son, Jack Howell, summed the project up in his speech. Since 2006, the Touched by Olivia Foundation has supported and opened 14 Livvi’s Playspaces across Australia.
With creative fixtures at every turn, Livvi’s Place will be loved for years to come. 144293 Picture: KARA LORGELLY
EVERY week there seemed to be another home invasion in Casey in 2015. Star News reported extensively on the spate of home burglaries in the municipality over many months in which thieves broke into houses, often through unlocked doors, stole keys and used them to make off with the occupant’s car. In December it was reported how police arrested several young members of the so-called Apex Gang who had broken into homes to steal car keys and vehicles in Melbourne’s south-east in recent weeks. But Detective Senior Sergeant Moroney said the crime spate extended wider than just the Apex Gang members who were typically aged between 15 and 25 years old.

Danger junction IT WAS the long-term worry of many Pearcedale residents and last year, after the death of a teenage girl, the notorious crossing in Pearcedale was temporarily upgraded before a roundabout was built. Having witnessed and dealt with numerous horrific road accidents at the Robinsons Road and Western Port Highway intersection, Malcolm Robinson said he’s “had enough” after 19-yearold Olivia Steadman-Meconi was killed in May. “I’ve seen multiple accidents here. There’s been quite a few fatalities and there’s always accidents. “I want to see the speed limit reduced and a roundabout built. I think a roundabout will be the only thing to stop the accidents and fatalities,” Mr Robinson said. He has lived on the corner of the intersection for 13 years and said cars have crashed through his fence. More than 6000 people signed an online peti-

Teen goes missing EMOTION hit fever pitch in October when 14-year-old Jade Robson-Whitehouse disappeared from her Junction Village home. Step-mum Tracey Harris and father Kim Whitehouse fronted the media and appealed for help after their daughter went missing. Her parents had reason to believe Jade could be anywhere from Dandenong to Traralgon and plastered posters throughout the state’s south-east including at the Pakenham skate park as they desperately clung to hope of
finding her. On the night she went missing, Jade had invited another girl to her house to sleep over, someone her parents had never met before and who it’s believed Jade had been contacting through social media. That same night Tracey went to put on a pair of shoes and when she returned to the room where the two girls had been, they were gone. Jade was eventually found in Stawell after more than three weeks of desperate searching.
MP’s personal battle IT WAS MP Jude Perera’s personal battle that many Cranbourne rate payers knew nothing about - his chronic kidney disease. In July last year the Cranbourne News sat down with Mr Perera to discuss his private health journey after a kidney transplant the 62-year-old received five years ago failed. Mr Perera who was on regular dialysis to filter his blood vowed he will keep serving the Cranbourne community. “I was brought up in a political house back in Sri Lanka. I enjoy being in politics - of course the left side of the political spectrum,” he said. “I like to help out people by representing them in Parliament.” Mr Perera, who moved to Australia with his wife and two children in 1988, unsuccessfully stood for Cranbourne in the 1999 election. He won the seat in 2002 and has held onto it throughout his health battle. “It was scarring of the kidneys,” he told Star News. “My cousin from Sri Lanka was generous enough to donate a kidney. She came over here. “The transplant was good for a while and after that it failed. “I’m on dialysis now. I’m getting myself trained to do it at home. “In the next few weeks I’ll be doing it at home in the night time, so it won’t hinder my daytime routine,” he said. Jude Perera said: “If someone’s kidney is suitable for me, and if my wife’s kidney is suitable for the nominated person of that donor, then it will go ahead.”
Jade Robson-Whitehouse, 14, was missing from her Junction Village home for more than three weeks during October last year.
QUOTES OF THE YEAR “I took it in my stride because you don’t get to pick your challenges in life. You just get to pick how you deal with them.” – Ian Brandon from Cranbourne speaks about living with multiple sclerosis.
“I feel like a lot of parents are lost as well because they don’t know what to do. Literally, I have parents calling me every week, crying on the phone, begging for help.” – Former drug dealer and addict and creator of Youth ‘YOU’ Program in Hallam, Glenn Munso discussing the grip ice has taken over teenagers as young as 13.
“There’s only one word and that’s moderation – moderation in all things and that’s what I’ve practised.” – Ken Feltscheer spoke to Star News about his impressive achievement turning 100 years old.
“I find it passing strange that we have to prove that another liquor outlet in our community will cause harm.” – Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius spoke openly about alcohol in society and community attitudes towards drinking.

Speeding Pplater nabbed AN ALREADY disqualified Berwick P-plate driver was caught speeding 90 kilometres per hour over the limit in Cheltenham. The 22-year-old was caught driving at 150kp/h in a 60kp/h zone along Centre Dandenong Road about 8pm on Monday 11 January. The driver, who was already disqualified, had his Honda Civic impounded for 30 days. He is expected to be charged on summons with driving while disqualified, exceeding the speed limit and other traffic offences.
Ram raiders hit party store An artist's impression of the $125 million Bunjil Place.
Precinct framework By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A DRAFT programming plan for Casey council’s new cultural precinct was adopted last month. The visual arts programming framework for the upcoming Bunjil Place was adopted after a community forum in October. More than 30 residents attended the event, which was initiated by Deputy Mayor Wayne Smith, to ensure the visual arts community was consulted in the planning for Bunjil Place. “On the day, we presented attendees with a draft programming framework,
proposed themes for the gallery, opportunities and spaces that will be available for Casey’s local visual arts community and example applications of the programming framework for Bunjil Place when it opens in 2017,” Cr Smith said. “Feedback provided at the forum was integrated into the development of the Bunjil Place Programming Framework which will guide planning for the gallery and future use of the precinct. “Council will continue to engage with the community as we establish our art exhibitions, activities and other opportunities at Bunjil Place.
“It is important that the community are involved throughout the life of the project so that Bunjil Place truly represents the Casey community and beyond when it opens.” The new framework comes as Brookfield Multiplex Constructions was recently chosen to bring the $125 million Bunjil Place project to life. In November the construction giant met with Casey council to formalise the agreement. The construction, which will continue for the next two years, will create the only regional community facility of
its kind. Brookfield’s managing director Graham Cottam said his team was thrilled to take on a “one-of-a-kind project”. “Brookfield has industry-leading, internationally accredited systems and processes and we are ready and excited to hit the ground running and work with the council and Casey community to deliver Bunjil Place by late 2017,” Mr Cottam said. The new facility will include an 800seat theatre, studio, art gallery, community library and meeting rooms, civic centre and council offices.
THIEVES rammed a car into the rear entry of Lombard The Paper People’s Fountain Gate store in the early hours of Monday 11 January and stole $8000 in cash before police arrived. The store on Victor Crescent in Narre Warren was raided between 1.30am and 1.50am after the power to surrounding shops was shut down. Registers and safes were searched in Lombard’s before the raiders struck neighbouring Captain Snooze by forcing their way in through a back door. A CCTV camera was smashed inside the bedding store but a power loss warning alarm alerted police to the incident. Several police units responded but arrived after the raiders had escaped. Police are currently reviewing other CCTV footage for leads.

The homes meet a minimum requirement of 7.5 star energy efficiency, staying cooler in summer and warmer in winter but also using only a fraction of
the energy required for conventional housing. Access to and from Melbourne to Cape Paterson is easy, being only one hour’s drive from Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs. The opening of the Koo Wee Rup bypass has made the trip even easier and safer. Visit The Cape Sales and Information Display Home via Seaward Drive, Cape Paterson, or phone Lisa Roberts on 0413 265 362 for a private tour. The display home is open from 2pm to 4pm each Saturday and Sunday and each day over the Australia Day long weekend.

BUYERS will have to hurry to secure a slice of the affordable beachfront lifestyle on offer at Phillip Island’s Woolamai House with the upcoming final release of 22 allotments in stage two. Blocks starting from as little as $225,000 are located just steps from the pristine beach of Cape Woolamai and buyers have been eager to secure what is one of the most affordable and, until now, best kept Victorian coastal secrets. The project’s final stage will comprise only 22 lots where buyers can enjoy the same benefits afforded by the multi-milliondollar lifestyle in the likes of Portsea, Sorrento and Torquay for just a fraction of the cost. These last exclusive lots will be released at a public launch event on 16 January 2016. Woolamai House will host a fun day with a swag of fun family activities to enjoy while providing buyers with the chance to secure one of these great coastal lots on offer. Some of the activities visitors will enjoy include a jumping castle, face painting, free barbecue, Californian baja-style nachos, icecream, and light entertainment. Woolamai House sales agent Greg Price this was a truly a one-of-kind lifestyle opportunity that is not to be missed. “The combination of a beach lifestyle and stunning location, coupled with fantastic affordability, offers great buying value and we really encourage those interested in a beach lifestyle to call in and check out what the project has to offer. “On 16 January at our release event we truly expect strong interest in the lots on offer and we really encourage everyone to call in and not miss out,” he said. “Buyers first hand see the incredible value in Phillip Island with other coastal hotspots such as Sorrento, Portsea and Torquay often pricing out buyers keen to secure a fantastic coastal lifestyle,” Mr Price said. Zoran Pavlovic, development manager for Woolamai House, said the highly anticipated
release of stage two will be met with strong interest. “We have seen a flurry of buyers in stage one drawn to Woolamai House’s unique affordability factor matched with incredible architectural style - there is nowhere else that offers the same value for money in a similar absolute beachfront location,” he said. Woolamai House is a charming 68-lot boutique development positioned moments from one of Phillip Island’s best swimming spots, offering crystal clear water and pristine beaches. It is just 90 minutes’ drive from Melbourne’s CBD so future residents will be well serviced by the nearby destinations of Cowes and San Remo with its vibrant array of shops, restaurants, cafes and other attractions. Lots range from 504 to 930 square metres and start from as little as $225,000. The Final Release Fun Day will be held on 16 January at Grofam Court, Cape Woolamai, and will run from 11am until 2pm. Everyone is welcome. For more information visit www. woolamaihouse.com.au or contact Greg Price at Alex Scott on 5952 5711.

Not a good start for Swans By JARROD POTTER Christmas came early for Berwick athlete Amy Tyrrell who won three gold medals at the recently held schools national championships. 148598 Picture: JARROD POTTER
Three time champ By JARROD POTTER WHAT a difference a year can make. Amy Tyrrell was over the moon when she picked up two medals at the 2014 Australian School Sport Australia 12 and under Track and Field Championships... so it is not hard to imagine how thrilled the Victorian schoolgirls' athlete was to win three gold medals at last year’s event in Canberra. Tyrrell, 12, from Berwick, is now a three-time national champion after her stellar meet - with individual titles in the 200m and the long jump as well as helping defend Team Vic’s 800m medley title.
The champion sporting allrounder narrowly missing out on the 2014 long jump gold medal downed in the final by 1cm - but she worked on her technique last year and found the winning edge to jump 5.37m in a massive personal best. “I was having lots of different issues trying to work out my technique and dad, my coach, we spent a lot of time trying new things out,” Tyrrell said. “I was winning until the third jump and then a girl was in front of me by one centimetre, and last year I lost by one centimetre, so I thought I didn’t want to lose again.
“But then when I pulled off that 5.37m - I had changed my technique - and it was a really exciting moment when I jumped that far after all that we went through.” She started off the meet with another PB - scorching the field in the girls’ Under-12 200m to earn her first individual national championship. “I qualified first in the heats and only by a little bit but anything could happen in the final. “The final was later on in the day and I won and got a PB as well - I ran 26.12,” Tyrrell said. “I was still pumped when I fin-
ished the race but it was kind of like a relief after all the training that it could pay off.” She puts her success down to hard work throughout winter where she also represented her state in the Team Vic Under-12 schoolgirls’ netball team - and also takes her mind off the monotony of playing only one sport. “It got me fit and it was something different, to take my mind off athletics,” Tyrrell said. She thanked her dad, mum, her running coach Steve and her family and friends for their help with her sporting ambitions.
CASEY-SOUTH Melbourne (111) has had a poor start to its 2016 Victorian Premier Cricket campaign going down to Kingston-Hawthorn (5/112) as batting woes returned to the Swans’ nest. Michael Wallace (37) put his horror start to the season behind him with a gutsy knock from the middle order while up-and-coming opener Ashan Wijayakumara (19) anchored in as the rot started from the top of the order by Matthew Worsnop (6/28). The Swans head to Ringwood for the first twodayer of the year this Saturday. Meanwhile the New Year started with a bang for Dandenong as it dispatched its southerly neighbour Frankston-Peninsula and earned a crucial bonus point. Cashing in on his first opportunity of the 2016, Brett Forsyth (103) was sensational in raising the bat for the 11th time in Victorian Premier Cricket. Perennial opening pair Forsyth and Tom Donnell (70) added 136 for the first wicket as the duo smashed through even an overly-negative Heat field to set the stage for a massive tally. “Being on holidays I really set myself for when I came back to finally get a 50 and hopefully kick on and get the victory,” Forsyth said. “I always think my strength is to bat deep and influence the game and that was something I was really pleased to have done on Saturday.” Dandenong host Monash Tigers this Saturday.
Above All for the Cup FORMER Kiwi sprinter Above All won Saturday night’s $67,000 Group 2 Cranbourne Cup (520m) leaving trainer Robert Britton in awe. “He is the best and most determined greyhound I’ve ever trained,” the highly successful Britton said after his star greyhound claimed the $47,000 first prize. Little over 12 months ago Above All won the Group 1 Hobart Thousand and Group 1 Silver Chief in the space of 16 days and was touted as one of the premier greyhounds in Australia. However it has been a tale of frustration since then as two
stints on the sidelines totalling nine months because of stopper bone injuries saw Above All grace the track a total of 10 times in 2015. “It has been an unbelievable effort to come back from these injuries,” Britton said. “When he won the Silver Chief (in January 2015) he came from behind to win, running away against the likes of (Melbourne Cup winners) Dyna Villa and Dyna Double One, which gives you an idea of the potential he was showing.” Above All ($20.80) began well in the Cranbourne Cup, settling second behind early pace setter Shared Equity, who
tracked wide on the first turn allowing Above All to cut to the lead along the rail. From that position he was always going to be hard to beat, and he eventually scored by two lengths over Shared Equity ($5.60) with Rare Pearl ($10.60) third in 30.00sec. “All three of his group wins have been from box five,” Britton pointed out. “It’s a draw people don’t normally like but he doesn’t seem to mind it.” Britton said he was unsure where he’d race Above All over the coming weeks, but features such as the Warragul Cup and Perth Cup appear among the possibilities.

Little ditty ’bout Jack and Ryan By JARROD POTTER DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 7 (One Day) RESUMING the race towards the DDCA Turf 1 finals, Cranbourne pushed past Heinz with ease while Berwick and Springvale South went to the wire. BERWICK v SPRINGVALE SOUTH In the first of two top-four battles on Saturday Berwick (6/156) couldn’t muster enough to hold off Springvale South (8/158) despite a gutsy fightback from middle order tandem Jack Williams (47) and Ryan Crawford (26). Nathan Pilon (26) set the stage for the Bears but soon four quick wickets fell to Tim Ford (2/20) and Malinga Bandara (1/26) - exposing Berwick’s five and six. Crawford and Williams steadied the ship and then began to take to some of the youthful Bloods’ bowlers, especially Matt Wetering (1/25). Williams slapped the Bloods about the field, including two sixes into the crowd at Arch Brown Reserve before his swashbuckling innings was undone by Wetering. Crawford fell soon after but their work had given the Bears a strong platform to defend. Outside of evergreen all-rounder Craig Slocombe (57), the rest of the Bloods first five struggled. With plenty of unavailable players and lacklustre batting from the top order following Jarrod Goodes’ (3/43) rampage, it left the hard yards to the premiership skipper as Slocombe found help from Jarryd Armitage (24) and Tim Ford (17). Slocombe’s smacking effort was brought undone by Berwick’s import leggie Williams (2/21), leaving the

Ryan Crawford continued his perennial defence in battle against the Pictures: JARROD POTTER Bloods. 148763 rest to the lower order. Ford and the 15-year-old keeper Nathan Villella (5no) grit their teeth to earn every run and push the Bloods home with seven balls remaining. HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS v CRANBOURNE Second versus fourth didn’t amount to much as Heinz Southern Districts (114) succumbed meekly to the might of Cranbourne (4/115). Martin Kelly (4/28) was sensational in his first change spell as he cleaned up Brad Downe (23), skipper Matt Cox (6), Michael Davies (5) and Matt Downe (6) on the cheap. Steve Spoljaric (2/24) had started the Cobras’ demise
after picking off Adam Semmens (12) and Hari Krishan (2). Injecting another much needed all-rounder into their top five, Cranbourne introduced Stuart Plunkett (3/15) and he immediately made his impact with blade and ball. Justin Davis (39no) made his return to first XI cricket at the right time as he was the only Cobra to strike back. Davis and Rob Davies (12) mounted enough resistance to push Heinz into triple figures. But 114 was not enough against the soaring Eagles as Matt Chasemore (39) and Plunkett (34) showed off a new look Cranbourne batting attack one that can afford to push Spoljaric
down the order and not suffer it would seem. The win keeps Cranbourne within striking distance of Springvale South while Heinz sits fourth with a four-game break on the chasers. BUCKLEY RIDGES v NARRE WARREN Narre Warren (6/235) smashed finals contender Buckley Ridges (195) around Park Oval as the Magpies took their best win of 2015/16. Set up by magnificent work at the top of the order from Wendell Perumal (82), Kaushayla Weeraratne (63) and Janaka Liyanabadalge (40), Narre Warren surged to its biggest tally of the year as the home side struggled to curtail the Magpies’ flight. In response the efforts of Jarryd Straker (3/32) and allrounder performance of Weeraratne (2/50) surged through the Ridges’ order, despite a gutsy resistance from Paul Rudd (50) and Matt Goodwright (45no). The win pushes Narre into 10th and marginally away from the relegation zone.
HALLAM KALORA PARK v NORTH DANDENONG Only four men were needed with the blade as Hallam Kalora Park (2/196) flayed North Dandenong (8/177). After a strong start from young openers Ben Hilliard (59) and Jagveer Hayer (22) - reaping 88 for the first wicket the cashing in continued in the middle order as Cory Booth (55no) and Leigh Booth (44no) finished the job with an unbeaten century stand. Cory Booth (4/20) made sure the Wookey votes would go in his pocket with a sensational four-over effort to rattle the Northerner’s order while Amila Perera (2/26) picked up the handy wickets at the top of the visitors’ attack. The win leaves the Hawks in a three-way battle for fifth with Mordialloc and Buckley Ridges. In two all-Casey Turf 1 battles, Berwick hosts Narre Warren for the first two-dayer of the year and Hallam Kalora Park battles Cranbourne while Heinz Southern Districts faces Dandenong West. TURF 3 Beaconsfield (0/124) absolutely smashed Hampton Park (119) in its return to cricket in 2016. It started with the ball as Matt Golding (3/37) and Callan Tout (2/17) seared through the Redbacks in only 32 overs before the batsmen put on a see-ball, hit-ball procession. Heshal Silva (59no) and Glenn Marinic (43no) ensured no one else needed to head to the middle as the openers flayed an unbeaten 100-run stand in 28 overs. Beaconsfield retains top of the ladder in Turf 3 and faces Heinz Southern Districts this round at home.

Sport West Gippsland cricket’s number one quick, Pakenham’s Jack Ryan, sends down a thunderbolt against Merinda Park in the day/night match at Toomuc Picture: ROB CAREW Reserve. 148734
Double-header action By DAVID NAGEL THE landscape of the West Gippsland Premier Division finals series will become a lot clearer this weekend with a massive one-day double-header set to define the season. Some of the key contenders for this year’s title will lock horns, with back-to-back reigning premiers Kooweerup facing a massive challenge to keep their hopes of a threepeat alive. The Demons, the talk of the town after losing to Upper Beaconsfield on Saturday, face the two best teams in the competition, Pakenham and Cardinia. Two losses and the Demons will have a 4-6 record, and deserve their predicament of a struggle for fourth place with Merinda Park and Upper Beaconsfield. But win both, and gain some much-needed confidence, and we face the prospect of a rampaging champion with a full-head of steam
under its belt and ready to defend its crown. But, for that to happen, the Demons’ form will need one hell of a turnaround. “To get 160 on the board and then choke them up a bit in reply,” was Upper Beaconsfield skipper Scott Pitcher’s plan heading in against the Demons. Richard North (38) controlled the destiny of the top order, with Pitcher (36) and Julian Bayard (21) helping their team achieve its first goal with a 54-run stand for the fifth wicket. Lachlan Harrison (13 not out) also played a key hand as the Demons struggled for containment. The Demons then played their part in the plan; choking in reply, Chris O’Hara (23) top-scoring as North (3/25), Pitcher (2/8), Bath Perera (2/14) and young-gun Chad McDonald (2/38) bowled their side to an impressive victory. “They pulled our pants down the last time we played them so to respond like that, and gain some re-
spect back, that’s pretty important for our club,” Pitcher said. One team with an endless amount of respect at the moment is the undefeated Pakenham (8/214), who toyed with Merinda Park (142) in a day/night one-dayer at Toomuc Reserve. Ben Shipperd (46) and Chris Smith (28) got the Lions off to a flyer before handing over to Rob Elston (41) and Sean Gramc (39), who lifted the rating through the middle order. It was then left to Zac Chaplin (33 not out) to launch his side through the magical 200-run barrier and defy the efforts of Chris Milne (4/59). The Lions then suffocated the Cobras in reply, Jason Pongracic (32) and Danny Diwell (32) the only batsmen to catch breath as Smith (4/13) and Jason Williams (2/23) applied the gas. Tooradin’s (7/331) Ben Mantel (101) and Cranbourne Meadows’ (8/187) number three Chris Hauselberger (108) had their own personal
gun-fight in an explosive affair at Lawson Poole Reserve. The difference between the two sides was that Mantel had support, with Bradey Welsh (76), Tom Hussey (54) and Daniel Hunt (31) moving things along swiftly at the top of the order. Brent Whyte (27 not out) and Tom Smith (20) were the only able allies for Hauselberger, who took Matt Welsh (2/32), Dylan Sutton (2/37) and Josh Lownds’s (2/38) best shot. In the final game of round nine, Cardinia (149) overcame a mediocre batting performance to smash Emerald (71) at Gunton Oval. Ben Maroney (29) top scored for the Bulls prior to tea while Dave McDonald (5/30) was simply sensational for the Bombers. Dean Henwood (3/14), Lucas Plozza (2/8) and Neil Barfuss (1/14) soon had the Bombers reeling at 6/32 in reply, with Dwayne Doig (3/8) casting a spell over the Bombers’ tail-enders to end their innings inside 28 overs.

Lawn bowlers keeping busy HAMPTON PARK BOWLS THE lawn bowls Pennant season is still in the Christmas break but Hampton Park bowlers are keeping busy. During the break the Club has run some championship events, with Helen Lambert winning the Ladies Singles title and Laurie Edwards the Men’s.
The heat delayed the semifinals and final for the Casey District singles titles and they will now be played later in January, along with the Casey District pairs. All events will be played at Cranbourne. The Peninsula Region mixed pairs Championship was played at the City of Frankston Club
on 6 January with Casey representatives, Hampton Park’s Denise Eastick and Geoff Ampt competing. Playing a pair from Hastings, a disastrous start was their downfall. They allowed their opponents a nine shot lead before scoring, and even though they had a late comeback, missed out by four shots.
CRANBOURNE BOWLS CRANBOURNE Bowls Club member Brian Kelly plays bowls in both Australia and his home club in Edinburgh, Scotland. Pictured proudly holding the winner’s trophy with his brother in the Cranny colours, they successfully won a local tournament day in a game of triples in Scotland. Brian plays bowls back home in Scotland in the warmer months and to avoid the cold relocates to Cranbourne to play bowls in Australia. What a life, with the best of two worlds and the opportunity to play the game he loves all year round. Cranbourne Bowls is back this Saturday with the number one side playing at home against Vermont South and the ladies number one side playing away on Tuesday week against Mulgrave Country Club.
