THE Darling Downs Public Health Unit has moved quickly to reassure the people of the Southern Downs following a confirmed case of a meningococcal infection at Warwick Hospital last week. Darling Downs Public Health Unit Director Dr Penny Hutchinson reassured local residents the disease was difficult to contract unless there had been close and prolonged contact with a case. All who have been in close contact with the recent case, Warwick Cowboys player Dylan Galloway have been followed up with the appropriate treatment. “Antibiotics clear the meningococcal bacteria from anyone who might be carrying it in their nose or throat and prevent them from passing it onto someone else who may develop disease,” Dr Hutchinson said. “Around 10 per cent of people carry meningococcal bacteria in their throats and noses without experiencing any symptoms. “It is important to emphasise that this is not a virus, and it does not spread easily. Very few people go on to develop the disease, and most of these make a complete recovery.“

There were 278 confirmed cases of meningococcal disease in Queensland from 2010 to 2015. “The bacteria are spread via droplets from the nose or throat shed during coughing and sneezing, but close and prolonged contact with a carrier is usually needed to become infected,“ Dr Hutchinson said. Symptoms include a high fever, severe headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pain, drowsiness and a rash that emerges and spreads rapidly. The rash initially looks like very small bruises just under the surface of the skin. Dr Hutchinson said young babies may also have other symptoms, such as refusing to feed, irritability and dislike of being handled, and lethargy. “Anyone with these symptoms, in particular a rapidly spreading bruise-like rash, should seek prompt medical assessment. “There is an effective vaccine against meningococcal C disease, however, it does not cover all types of the meningococcal diseases,” she said. More information on meningococcal disease is available on the Queensland Health website or by calling 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84).

High spirits in store for Santa Claus

Casey’s tips

A great crowd turned out for the Carols at Warwick on the weekend before Christmas.

SOUTHERN Downs residents were out in force before Christmas getting into the spirit of things. One of the best attended events was the annual Carols in the Park at Warwick on the weekend before Christmas. Photographer Terry West was one of the many Southern Downs residents to go along - here’s what he captured.

New waste centre to open this week GRANITE Belt residents will soon be able to take advantage of improved facilities for their waste management with the construction of the new Northern Granite Belt waste transfer station at The Summit being almost complete. The new Northern Granite Belt Waste Transfer Station has been built on the site of the existing waste transfer station at Taggart Road, The Summit. Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Peter Blundell said the new facility is set to open on Friday 15 January. “The new waste transfer station will be a supervised facility, servicing the northern region of the Granite Belt from Dalveen to The Summit. “It will open four days per week Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 8am to 5pm,” he said. “The newly constructed facility will maximise recycling opportunities for residents and provide for the disposal of waste in a safe and user friendly environment. “Users of the facility will also have the opportunity to purchase re-used items through the re-sale shop on site.” The council said that the following types of waste will be accepted at the Northern Granite Belt waste transfer station: Commercial and domestic general waste. Recyclables such as paper, cardboard, plastics, aluminium and glass. Green waste. Scrap metal. Construction waste such as concrete, bricks and tiles. Tyres. Clean, empty chemical drums, in accordance with the DrumMuster program. Vehicle batteries. E-waste. For further information about this new facility or about waste management phone the council’s Environmental Services section on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

In the aftermath of a fire, be alert for damage to the electricity network, stay clear of burning poles and notify Essential Energy immediately on 13 20 80 if you come across fallen powerlines. “Treat fallen or damaged powerlines and poles as ‘live’ and remain at least eight metres away from them and anything they may be in contact with, such as fences, cars and pipes, which can become energised through contact,” Mark said. Essential Energy advises that power outages are likely to be lengthier than usual on days of Total Fire Ban as crews need to manually inspect powerlines to ensure the safety and reliability of the electricity network. An 18-year-old female overseas tourist picked a bad time to stop on the side of the road and roll a smoke, according to the Stanthorpe Police. “At about 4pm last Friday afternoon, police stopped to assist a young woman parked on Amiens Road, Cannon Creek,” Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said. “Upon approaching the vehicle they observed the woman to have a quantity of cannabis in her lap. “A search of the vehicle also located a grinder, a pipe and further cannabis in the console. The woman received drug diversion as a result.”

Officer in Charge of Stanthorpe Police, Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said a 22-year-old male international visitor was intercepted in Marsh Street in relation to a traffic offence this past Thursday. He was transported to Stanthorpe Police Station where he was later charged with drink driving, providing a reading of .099. In the early hours of Sunday morning police intercepted a vehicle being driven by a 25-year-old male tourist, the man later providing a reading of .075. A short time later a second man, 58 years of age was intercepted in Lock Street, Stanthorpe and later provided a reading of .108.

THE Wattles Rugby League players once again swapped football for the rodeo arena when they held their annual fun night and rodeo at the Allora Showgrounds on Saturday night. Postponed from earlier in the year due to rain, the event finally went ahead in fine weather. The fund-raising event for the club started with yabby racing at 4pm and the rodeo at 7pm. The night featured an open bull ride, footballers’ steer ride, open bullock ride, junior steer ride, poddy ride and pony buckjump. For more photos, see page 9.

Be ready for fire WITH hot, dry and windy conditions continuing across New South Wales, Essential Energy is calling on landholders in Tenterfield to be prepared and alert for bushfire - especially around the electricity network. Essential Energy Regional manager Northern, Mark Summers, said that summer weather could be extreme yet safety measures could help reduce the risk of electrical incidents and bushfire. “Preparation plays a large part in mitigating bushfire risk, so we recommend completing the Rural Fire Service’s Bushfire Survival Plan which helps identify potential hazards and ways to minimise them,” Mark said. “Simple steps like clearing leaves and debris from gutters, removing combustible material from around the home and ensuring vegetation isn’t encroaching on powerlines can help to protect

Fireys support BUNNINGS are out to raise funds for local volunteer fire brigades and emergency services through their annual Aussie Day Weekend Fund-raiser barbecue, held at all stores on Saturday 23 January. Warwick residents are invited to celebrate Australia Day and support the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) by heading down to Bunnings Warwick between 9am and 4pm, to buy a snag or make a donation. Team members will be running sausage sizzles with support from fire brigade and emergency services volunteers, with every cent raised going directly to support the QFES.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Deputy Commissioner, Mike Wassing, said he is thrilled that Bunnings is continuing to support local volunteer fire brigades and emergency services through this great initiative. “QFES volunteers such as those from the State Emergency Service and the Rural Fire Service are dedicated members who contribute significantly to supporting Queensland communities before, during and after disasters, he said. “It is really great to see when the community return the favour by helping to fund-raise. This support enables the continued improvement of our volun-

teer services, Mike said. Bunnings Warwick Store Manager, Debby Stevens, said the Aussie Day Weekend Fundraiser barbecue is a terrific way for team members and all Australians to show their appreciation for the wonderful work done by local volunteer fire brigades and emergency services. “The team is really excited to get behind the barbecue to help raise vital funds for our local QFES, said Debby. Family activities, fun games and entertainment will also be held throughout the day. The barbecue is on Saturday 23 January at Bunnings Warwick, 43 Palmerin Street. Phone 4661 1133 for details.

Jobs alliance has potential By TANIA PHILLIPS EMPLOYMENT support services are set to be boosted in the Southern Downs after the announcement of a supportive alliance between Southern Downs Employment Service and Artius. Southern Downs Employment Service, a division of Stanthorpe Training (STC) which has been operating since 1994, has supported Granite Belt residents with disabilities to gain and maintain meaningful employment. The alliance with Artius, a fellow south-east Queensland Employment Service provider, will boost the provision of dis-

ability employment services in the region. It has more than 30 years combined experience in helping people find work according to STC president Judy-Anne Dvorak. “Stanthorpe Training Centre Management Committee have been sponsoring the delivery of services to people with a disability in the Stanthorpe community for many years,” she said. “The decision to partner with Artius was taken because we believe that this partnership will ensure that this very valuable and successful service would continue into the future.”

Artius is a Queensland based employment and health service provider. The joint initiative currently provides services from its offices based in Warwick and Stanthorpe according to Artius managing director Paul Stokes. “We believe work is good for you. “We look forward to working together with Southern Downs Employment Services to assist the communities within the Southern Downs to reach their potential,” he said. “It doesn’t matter where you join us on your life journey, we will help you reach your potential.”

IT WAS a big night in Stanthorpe on the Monday before Christmas - everyone was there even Santa. Of course the highlight of the night was the big $1000 shopper draw. The winner had to be there on the night and it was drawn three times before Julie-Anne O’Brien was declared the winner. And intrepid photographer Terry West was out and about to capture the fun.

The Stanthorpe Rotary Club held raffles during Santa's visit. From left were Don Gaskey, Chris Cox, Julie Beddow and Denise Haslett.

Library numbers show power of words THE residents of Southern Downs are book worms, according to figures released by the council late last week. Residents were keen to get their holiday reading organised with large numbers of people visiting the libraries to return and borrow books and other items just prior to Christmas and in the first week of 2016. Weekly library statistics from 23-24 December 2015 and 4-5 January 2016 included 2446 visits, 897 borrower inter-

actions, 9474 transactions, 30 borrower registrations and two programs delivered. Libraries are an integral part of the services delivered by Southern Downs Regional Council with libraries operating in Allora, Stanthorpe and Warwick and a mobile library servicing other parts of the municipality, according to principal librarian Samantha Shelbourn. “As always, the first open day of the new year is the busiest day of the year with 1227

people visiting a council library on Monday 4 January 2016, returning 2230 items and borrowing 1953 items,” she said. “The large numbers utilising the libraries indicate the important role libraries play in meeting the needs of the community across a diversity of age groups, as well as being a community hub that distributes information and allows people to interact in a safe environment.”

Dam numbers VIC Pennisi is still going on to build Emu Swamp Dam. Number one, it will be too shallow. Number two, engineers said it would not stack up. Vic Pennisi still does not know how much it will cost to pump water uphill to Stanthorpe. People from Stanthorpe and Warwick are saying to me Vic Pennisi does not know how much it will cost to pump water uphill to Stanthorpe. As they are saying, it is not long now for a new council. John Salata, Glen Aplin.

A mistake AS IF “Destination Southern Downs” Tourism wasn’t already the greatest mistake, visitor wise, even though it now has been topped by the latest appointment of Mrs Amy Walker as “agriculture tourism “specialist”. To get the real “low down” facts, just ask “Warwick livewire” Mrs Tracey Vellacott just “what” or “who” ruined the once vibrant and leading Warwick Visitor Centre to lower it to what it is now - a shadow of what it was. Laurence Halley, Warwick.

‘Nuclear fears fostered’ ISN’T it interesting that as soon as a group is formed due to community fears in relation to the proposed radioactive waste dump being placed at Omanama, “Fears are being flamed”! This obvious right-wing reporter is incapable of reporting in an unbiased manner what has actually occurred within this community. I am a resident of Inglewood, and have my home 20 kilometres from the proposed dump. It is to be an interim (not permanent), indefinite (no proposed time span) functional site for up to 100 years and maintained for up to 400 years, with concrete that has been “scientifically proven to last 400 years” (wonder how they do a trial on that?) This site is at the headlands of the Murray Darling Catchment, leaks have consequences for three states and thousands of agricultural interests. The site is on a hill with an Aboriginal culturally significant site evident to anyone who wants to look. It is 100 kilometres

from Toowoomba, one of the most densely populated sites in Queensland. International best practice disposal of intermediate waste is 30-300 metres deep underground in flat, arid, low population and geologically stable ground, however 400 years is not permanent according to Ansto, however feels pretty permanent to residents of Inglewood and Omanama. Ansto indicates that it is safe, however if we look to Ansto’s track record, this claim is arguable. In 2011 David Reid (30-year employee) was sacked after raising concerns on breached safety precautions and under-reported accidents. If we take a quick look at the list of accidents, leaks and breaches that has occurred at Lucas Heights since 1985, is it any wonder the locals are fearful of the dump? A truck roll over - spilling radioactive isotopes, leaking tritium into stormwater drains for 10 years and the attempted (one detonator set off) sabotage in 1993. I was present at the first public meeting when Lawrence Springborg stated “I went up and had a look at the site yesterday, looks like a great site for it”. This is our political representative. Pretty sure he has no geological or nuclear science qualifications, yet he felt it appropriate to indicate to his loyal voters how appropriate this site would be for a radioactive waste dump. It was a breath of fresh air when at the same meeting I came across “Friends of the Earth”, who did not fan my fears but helped me and many others in our community find a common voice in relation to our concerns, that our current representatives are deliberately trying to ignore. In my twenties I was a member of the Young Nationals and yet now in my forties find myself-aligned with the opposite end of the political landscape. Lawrence, what is wrong with this picture? Edward Frey, Inglewood.

Lack of caring READING in another place a “Call for elderly abuse inquiry” reminded this writer of the fight to remove Justice Examination Orders from the Mental Health Act 2000. These orders were to be discontinued following investigations into their use, notably in situations of custody fights over children, and in appointing guardians to acquire property, generally of the aged.

It seems beyond belief that the aged would be abused by people they trusted, with the QADA noting more cases of relatives taking over the elderly person’s family home for their own purposes. How has it come to this in Australia? A Royal Commission being called for into elder abuse! This writer believes that the youth have lost their way and would benefit from a history lesson called The Great Depression, Australian Battlers Remember, available in book form written by Keith Smith. Published by Random House Australia Pty Ltd. Copyright Keith Smith 2003. The total nonsense of today is highlighted in an advertisement in a newspaper of internet connected shoes that count your steps, warm your feet, light your path, measure shock absorption, and cost $630! No kitchens can house all the junk that is advertised daily and is totally unnecessary! Smart old timers needed none of it and reared families of distinction! Melba Morris, Allora.

Rumour was true When the SDR Council came into being it was rumoured that the new ‘mob’ would close down some of the outlying transfer stations because that was what the Warwick Council had done. Now, it’s certain that the old rumour is about to come true. A report in a recent article confirms that gradually all of the outlying waste stations will be closed. This will cause a great burden for those who will have to travel long distances to dispose of their household waste. Residents aren’t going to be happy campers over this decision by council. Might it come to pass that lots of rubbish will be illegally dumped? The SDRC has the reputation for making unpopular decisions. One would have thought that with the council election looming this decision would not have come forth at this time. I think it demonstrates how council likes to crash on with unpopular decisions and clearly shows that there needs to be new brooms on council. I think I will run for mayor. I doubt I could do worse than the one that got four per cent in last year’s popularity stakes. Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.

THE Thulimbah Waste Transfer Station is set to close permanently from Monday 1 February according to the Southern Downs Regional Council. For disposal of general household waste and recyclables, the council advises users to visit the Pozieres Waste Transfer Station, located on Pozieres Road or the new Northern Granite Belt Waste Transfer Station, located on Taggart Road, The Summit.

Thrills and spills aplenty - and some of the footballers - took to the rodeo ring for a packed field of events. Photographer Terry West was on hand to capture all the action.

THE Warwick Saleyards have a cattle sale most weeks, excluding the Christmas/New Year period. The cattle sales occur on Tuesday, with cattle generally coming into the yards on Monday. This year, one of the Tuesday sales falls on Australia Day. In response, council has made contact with the agents and other operators of the yards highlighting this fact. The discussions have centred on the potential of holding the sale on an alternative day or proceeding with a public holiday sale. The outcome of these discussions is that changing the day will clash with other yards, impacting on yardage (revenue) and leave it late for animal processing. Additionally the processors' representatives will not be attending on the public holiday. As a result, it has been determined that it will be more cost effective not to run a cattle sale on the week the public holiday falls. There will be no cattle sale on Tuesday, 26 January 2016.

Stars are touring in Quartet

is on the way By TERRY WEST THE new year has rolled around and it is time to see what the next month may bring to our region in the way of weather. As we move into 2016 we find the influencing factors of late 2015 are still in play. The strong El Nino combined with a warm Indian Ocean has allowed moisture to move into South East Queensland with some large amounts of rainfall recorded. The 2015 El Nino is peaking now and all indications show it is going to weaken as we move through January. The rate of decay from the El Nino will be one of the influencing factors for our region receiving any useful rainfall. During the next month we should see at least three rain events originating from the south and west while events from the north may be less extreme. Rain is expected from Southern regions during the following dates: 19 January to 23 January, 29 January to 2 February and 5 February to 9 February. Northern rain events may be possible around the following dates: 19 January to 23 January, 25 January to 29 January and 4

The Southern Downs enters 2016 with feed on the ground and moisture in the air.

Storms developing near Killarney. February to 8 February. January is climatologically the warmest month of the year for Southeast Queensland. Temperatures should remain

slightly warmer than average during January and into the start of February although nighttime temperatures may remain around average.

FOUR of Australia’s best known actors from stage and screen, including the muchloved Andrew McFarlane, are set to tour Queensland in the devilishly funny comedy Quartet, presented by Queensland Theatre Company (QTC). Quartet will tour to nine regional Queensland theatres after officially opening QTC’s mainstage season in Brisbane at the Playhouse Theatre (30 January to 21 February). While the show won’t quite make it to Warwick, it will get close, playing in Toowoomba on 25 February at the Empire Theatre. Under the direction of Andrea Moor (Venus in Fur, Grounded and 2015’s season opener and touring production, Boston Marriage), Quartet stars acting powerhouse Andrew McFarlane (The Sullivans,The Flying Doctors, Glitch, Truth, A Place To Call Home, Love Child, Water Rats, Blue Heelers and Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities among others), along with fellow awardwinning actors Christine Amor, Trevor Stuart and Kate Wilson. In Quartet, writer Ronald Harwood, author of Another Time, The Dresser and Interpreters, takes on retirement with tenderness, grace, hope and lots of humour - but no self-pity - in what is a moving and all too truthful tale of the frustrations and fears of getting old. The story of Quartet begins

in a Country House in Kent, where retired opera singers Reggie, Cecily and Wilfred have been put out to pasture in a country retirement home after wowing the world. The annual concert marking composer Verdi’s birthday is the next headline event for the trio, and all is well. Serenity however, is shattered by the arrival of their old fourth member and Reggie’s ex-wife Jean. Can the quartet put aside old grudges for one more show-stopping finale? Quartet debuted in 1999 at the Albery Theatre in London, with its touching themes of art illuminating life, the stresses of getting old and passions in the world of music striking a chord with audiences worldwide. The play was then adapted into a successful film in 2012 by director Dustin Hoffman and starred Maggie Smith, Pauline Collins, Billy Connolly and Tom Courtenay. The award-winning Andrew McFarlane has worked for every state theatre company in Australia, and numerous independent companies. He is currently in the film Truth alongside Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford, which opened at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. Cecily is played by Christine Amor, whose appearances in over 30 plays for the Queensland Theatre Company, Sydney Theatre Company and Melbourne Theatre Company

sit proudly alongside roles in 11 long-running television series including Prisoner, Are You Being Served?, H2O-Just Add Water and Carson’s Law, winning her a best actress award for her portrayal of Felicity Carson. Creative powerhouse Trevor Stuart is a favourite of Queensland Theatre Company, appearing in roles in Design For Living, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Wrong Side of the Moon, and Antigone. He has also worked for La Boite and Brisbane Festival and directed numerous productions including Lumiere and Son, Cocoloco, and Hope St Ltd, receiving a Helpmann Nomination for Best Supporting Actor in As You Like It (2012). Ensuring Quartet stars a foursome to be reckoned with is Kate Wilson, an acclaimed actor and teacher with a long-running string of lead roles in well over 30 plays. She has also written plays alongside Murray Foy and starred in the film Cyber Wars. Hop to it, for kids WITH Queensland’s frogs out in full force after summer rains, the foundation for National Parks and Wildlife is warning Southern Downs residents that now is a good time to keep their eyes and ears peeled for froggy friends. Some of the common species to look out for include the Green Tree Frog, the Striped Marsh Frog, and the Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog. To make sure they stick around, the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife has some easy tips for making a pond in just a few hours. Backyard Buddies is a free program run by Australia’s Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife. Each month participants get a Backyard Buddies email (B-mail) with tips to make backyards inviting and safe for native animals, according to group CEO Susanna Bradshaw. “Water is incredibly important for Australia’s wildlife, especially our huge variety of frogs,” Ms Bradshaw said. “A pond can offer an easy, permanent water source for your local amphibian buddies and will also benefit lots of other native animals too.” “Australia is home to over 200 species of frogs that are found nowhere else in the world. Sadly Australia also has one of the highest rates of amphibian extinction in the world. So anything you can do around Warwick to provide habitat for them, will be a big help.” “Australian frogs are facing threats from the devastating Chytrid fungus, water pollution, drought, predation from introduced pests and much more. Their numbers haven’t plummeted like this since the extinction of the dinosaurs.”

Growling Grass Frog. She said if there was space, the best thing Southern Downs residents could do for local frogs is create a pond for them. “Frogs are great to have around,”Ms Bradshaw said. “They show that you live within a healthy ecosystem as they are very sensitive to chemicals and environmental degradation. Don’t touch frogs as any sunscreen or insect repellent on your skin can make them sick.” “We strongly advise that you do not relocate frogs or tadpoles as you could unintentionally be spreading the deadly Chytrid fungus.” “While not all frogs live around ponds, they all need a water source to reproduce and keep their porous skin moist,” said Ms Bradshaw. “One of the best ways to work out what species of frog you have in your garden is by simply listening to their call and checking it with an app or online. There are a couple

of frog ID apps that you can download including Frogs of Australia for iPhones and Frogs Field Guide for any device,” Ms Bradshaw said. “The calls that you hear are only made by male frogs when they’re trying to attract females. Listen out now as there is always a peak in frog calls in warm, wet weather. See how many different species you can hear in the summer rains.” How to Make a Frog Pond featured in the January B-mail. Sign up for B-mail and download a free factsheet about building your own Frog Pond at www.backyardbuddies.net.au How to make a frog pond in 10 easy steps: 1. Decide on what type of pond you want such as fibreglass, hard plastic mould or freeform pond liner. You can even convert an unused swimming pool into a pond. 2. Choose a position in a natural depression that is roughly 2/3 in the

★★ ★★ STARSCOPE ARIES—March 21-April 20

shade and 1/3 in the sun. 3. See if you can time constructing your pond before some decent rain, to improve the pond water quality and increase the chances of frogs finding your pond. 4. Dig your hole and line with sand. The sand helps make your pond level and protect it from punctures. Make sure your pond fits snuggly in the hole and fill in any gaps with soil or sand. 5. Always rinse and clean anything you want to place in the pond as frogs are very sensitive to chemicals. Add a layer of small, clean pebbles or gravel to the bottom of the pond. 6. Next place several different species of (preferably native) aquatic plants and work out where you want to position them. 7. Turn your hose on low and fill up the pond. If you are using mains water, the chlorine in the water will usually need to evaporate over a few days before frogs will use it. 8. While the pond is filling, you can plant some natives around the pond. Try to use a wide variety of grasses, sedges, and small shrubs to suit a variety of different frogs. Rocks and logs around and in the pond will complete the habitat. A stick draped across the water will help the frogs climb in and out. 9. If you want, you can buy algae flakes from most pet stores to feed tadpoles to help them get enough food when your pond is new. You can also feed them lettuce and spinach. After a few weeks the pond will be able to naturally provide food for your tadpoles. 10. Be patient as it may take a few months before your local frogs find your new pond.

Local Sport Casey’s tips

Connecting people with the sport they love.

There’s always the tennis The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

WELCOME back to everyone after the holiday season. There has certainly been plenty to entertain everyone over the holiday season. While the West Indian Test series proved to be the fizzer many expected the BBL has certainly been kicking goals with TV audiences and patrons at games. I am the first to admit I was not a fan in the early days but for pure entertainment I think it is great and it has drawn a whole new audience to the game who previously were not interested - that in itself has to be a positive for all forms of the game. It has certainly changed the face of cricket and the ripple effect can be seen across all forms. Fans were treated to a smorgasbord of runs in the first ODI between Australia and India earlier in the week. It would have been unheard of for over six hundred runs to be scored in a one day match only a couple of years back. The start to the year of course for all sports lovers will now be dominated by the WADA decision to ban the Essendon players in the ongoing drug saga for 12 months. No matter what your thoughts on the whole sordid business this week’s decision seems an eon away from the “Darkest Day in Sport” statement. What a shame this has taken so long to resolve. It will now reverberate throughout the coming year and perhaps more to come. But wait now the Indian cricketers are hinting at a conspiracy theory against them - oh my: what a way to start 2016. At least we have the Australian Open Tennis to look forward to. Bring on that comforting sound of thwack thwack. - Casey ON TARGET AT INGLEWOOD MEMBERS of the Inglewood Sporting Shooters Association at Inglewood were back in action and bang on target last weekend after the Christmas break. There was action aplenty on the range. Ray Dudgeon began 2016 with a bang and a win in the 50m Benchrest Rimfire outscoring Michael Dudgeon and Lachlan Sharpe. In the single action event Glen Holmes was too strong for Iain Bowen and Dan McCosker. This Sunday Muzzle Loading and Centrefire events are on the menu and there could be a clay shoot happening as well. Don’t forget you can follow the action on the club’s Facebook page. NO REST FOR SPORTERS THE Sporters are a dedicated bunch and were out and about on the course over the holiday period. On the first Sunday of 2016 the group played the back nine on the Stanthorpe course. Mark Lynam showed good form when to take the first win for the year ahead of runner up Aaron Simmers. Simmers had the best gross and hit every ball well to also win the Pro Pin. David Williams and John Walsh featured in the rundowns. The pin at the 12th went the way of Bob Watts and at 17 Norm Steele. A 12th pin was won by Bob Watts. Norm Steele picked up the pin at the 17th. Clarky and Peter Goodsir both started the year in winning form when they each took home a meat tray. Last Sunday David Williams backed up his good form with an opening sporters win for 2016. Paul Armstrong was the runner-up and the run downs went to Graham Clark and Ian Anderson. Michael Thompson played well returning the Best Gross. Paul Byrnes and Dave McPaul were the lucky winners of the meat trays. Young Hannah Reeves played another nice round collecting the Pin Shot at the 3rd and the Pro Pin. It was Hannah’s last regular appearance at Sporters for some time. The talented youngster is living her dream and will head to the Hills Golf Academy shortly. All Sporters players wish Hannah well in this exciting phase of her life. There will be no Sporters this Sunday due to the fund-raiser for Apple and Grape ambassador Rhiannon McPaul. An 18 hole three ball Ambrose has been scheduled with an 8.30am call up for a 9.00am shotgun start.

Crowds flocked to the tennis in Perth despite the heatwave conditions. GORDON STARS IN WIN MARYVALE Condamine added another win to their tally this season with a win over Sovereign Animals on Saturday at Slade Park but it was the performance of Will Gordon that had everyone’s attention. In a rare display Gordon took five outfield catches during the innings fielding at mid-off Gordon could do no wrong taking three diving catches and two running catches in a performance that impressed team mates and opponents alike. Maryvale were defending a total of 214 after batting first. Tom Bourke top scored with 62. Sovereign were dismissed for only 65 runs. Chris Baker was the best of the Sovereign Animals' side taking 3/27 and top scoring for his side with 21. Dave Walker took 4/11 from his eight over spell and Paul Bourke 3/10. It was an emphatic win for Maryvale Condamine and the efforts of the young man at mid-off cannot be overlooked. In other games Wheatvale 258 defeated Colts 173. Paul Cantwell top scored for Wheatvale with 96 and was well supported by Chris Cantwell 57 and Ryan Collins 32. Ben Sullivan took four wickets and Shaun O’Leary and Cam Peterson two for Colts. In reply Maugann Benn and Cam Petersen each scored 51 for Colts but it was not enough and Wheatvale scored a comfortable win. James Breen with 5/17 was the best of the Wheatvale bowlers. Catch up games will be played this Saturday commencing at 12.30pm. Colts v Inglewood at Inglewood Wheatvale v Allora Rascals at Briggs Oval Scots College GOOD GOLF AT WALLANGARRA THERE was some good golf played last weekend on the Wallangarra course and some good scores recorded. Andrew Thompson carded 46 points a win in Saturday’s event. Scott Williams finished in second spot with a credible 42 only one shot in advance of Jamie Purcel on 41. It was a rare day when all the pin shots were claimed. Andrew Thompson’s winning round included two pin shots the others went the way of Purcel Moore and Hampstead. The club has a single stroke event scheduled for this weekend. You can follow the events at the Wallangarra Golf Club on their facebook page. IMPRESSIVE WINS FOR RSL RSL backed up a win in Friday night’s T20 game against Souths with a win in the longer format of the game on Saturday against Valleys. The wins showed RSL’s versatility and endorsed they are the favourites in the race for the 2016 premiership. They are now well clear of their nearest rivals as the season heats up.

Lleyton Hewitt's final appearance on court at the Hopman Cup. On Friday night RSL took to the field without the services of some of their top players but still proved too strong for a Souths side hit by injuries. RSL had first use of the wicket. Ross Lupton looks to be regaining the form that made him such a danger man last season and he notched up another half century. Todd Brady once again proved his worth with the bat with a well-timed innings of 33. Despite these good batting performances the Souths bowlers were able to restrict RSL to a total of 126 thanks in part to an outstanding bowling performance from Lucas Sumpter. He finished the innings with the figures of 1/0 from four overs. In his first game this season, Tom Cameron starred for Souths with the bat. He punished the bowling attack to score a quick 51 but it was not enough to get his side home as other batsman came and went. Souths fell 17 runs shy of their target to give RSL their first win of the weekend. Under threatening skies against Valleys on Saturday the RSL players picked up where they had left off the previous evening. Lupton added another half century to his name before being run out and Brady contributed another 35 in almost a carbon copy of the previous game. After interruptions to play, the RSL total of 227 was revised down to 149 under the Duckworth Lewis system. Rain eventually got the better of the game with Valleys still 70 runs short of their target. John Fletcher top-scored for Valleys with 44. The win putS RSL three wins clear of their rivals. BACK IN THE SWING MANY Stanthorpe golfers enjoyed the holiday break from weekly competition however they

turned out in force for the opening monthly medal competition of 2016 last and there were convincing winners in both the Men’s and Ladies events. Howard returned a nett 63 after scoring 40 on the front nine and was home with 44 to win the men’s event by two shots from runner up Ricky Chapman. In the Ladies event Neta Thouard’s round of nett 72 put her four shots clear of runner up, Linda Kelly, who returned nett 76. In addition to winning the prize from Saturday’s sponsor Alex Vale, it was Neta’s first Saturday medal win. Darryl Boekholt claimed both men’s pin shots at 3/12 and at 17. Kay Webb collected the ladies’ pin at 3/12 while the overall winner Neta had best approach at 17. Pro-pins were shared; Simon Shannon took 1/10, David Townsend 5/14 and Eric McLellan holding on to 9/18. The Best gross rounds came from the juniors. Dylan Barraclough was four under par with 68 for the men and Hannah Reeves with 81 for the ladies. Hannah also had least putts for the ladies and the men’s putts came in at 25 for the round. In the run down, it was a ball each to those with scores of nett 67 and better for the men and nett 78 for the ladies. Saturday was also the first round of the Foundation Cup which is played over three stroke rounds with best two rounds to count. After round one several few players have a foot in the door, but there is plenty of time left for the rest of the field to make a move.

The Scorchers drew a big crowd at the WACA. TENTERFIELD EMPHATIC MAIDEN WIN TENTERFIELD scored their first win of the 2015/16 cricket season last weekend when they defeated Wanderers. With conditions threatening, Tenterfield opted to bat first after winning the toss but lost early wickets. At 2/10 things were not looking bright for the visitors but with a half century from Merchant (51) and contributions of 30 from both Murphy and O’Brien, Tenterfield pushed the score along. Wanderers proved to be their own worst enemy with a poor performance in the field seeing seven catches put down. With a gift of 47 extras added to Tenterfield’s score Wanderers found themselves chasing a total of 200. Wanderers compounded their poor performance in the field to be all out in the 13th over for only 98 runs. In a man of the match performance, Merchant followed up his half century with a six wicket haul to ensure his side their first win this season and a bonus point. MAGIC MILLIONS QUEENSLAND Racing may be in turmoil but if you were at the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions celebrations you would hardly have noticed. Local Southern Downs studs figured prominently in the sales arena where returns despite the doom and gloom in Queensland were higher than anticipated. Saturday’s 10 million dollar race program as expected drew all of the big names on and off the turf. Classy two year old Capitalist became the shortest priced favourite to win the Magic Millions Classic and has firmed as early favourite for the Golden Slipper. Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir continued his purple patch of form taking out the Magic Millions Guineas and added the Magic Millions Cup later in the day. Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne did not disappoint either proving she is more than a one hit wonder when she rode her brother Patrick’s horse Husson Eagle to victory in the Magic Millions Sprint to wrap up a sensational carnival. It was a copybook ride drawing much
