Transport code red By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE decision to stop trains running to the last four stations of the Belgrave line on code red fire days may extend to other forms of public transport. Metro Trains announced the decision to close the last four stations on the Belgrave line late last year citing safety concerns for staff and commuters. “In the event of code red, it is not safe for customers or staff to be in the area so services would not operate in that section, Metro spokesperson Sammie Black said. The decision was made in consultation with Emergency Management Victoria and the CFA who established the section of track between Belgrave and Upper Ferntree Gully stations were in an extreme fire risk area. “We have assessed that the safest and closest station to change ends and return is Bayswater," Ms Black said. “A shuttle bus service will replace trains from Bayswater to Ferntree Gully, with all stations from Upper Ferntree Gully to Belgrave closed. “Replacement bus services are also not planned to run in the areas affected by the train station closures. “It is not safe for customers or staff to be in the area so services will not operate on that part of the network, said PTV spokesperson Nick White. While Metro may not be running train or bus services to the area, Mr White said it would be up to local service providers’ discretion to decide if they want to run services on such high fire risk days. “Local bus operators will consult with the relevant agencies before deciding how a code red day will impact their operations, Mr White said. Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley has said previously on this issue that it was important everyone who lived in, or visited a high risk area, had a plan for what they would do on any high fire danger day. “On code red days in particular, people in high risk areas are urged to leave the night before or early in morning, he said. “People in these areas need to update their plans to include the change to public transport services. A CFA spokesperson said the decision by Metro to stop the trains at Bayswater would have no impact on the fire management plan of the local CFA crews.

URSULA Burnett has been attending Jag Hair on Belgrave for the past 30 years every Thursday morning without fail. Described by staff member of the salon Caz Wright as Queen of the Hills, Mrs Burnett reportedly challenges staff, but they have grown very fond of her. Mrs Burnett turned 90 on Monday, 11 January, and the team at Jag Hair organised a surprise photo shoot for the birthday girl (after her usual hair appointment had concluded, of course). Help Cockatoo flourish CARDINIA Shire Council is inviting Cockatoo residents to a community forum event on Sunday, 7 February, to identify the needs of the community and what residents can do to meet them. The forum will be held as part of the Cockatoo Collective Impact project. Council will provide support for this project; however, it will be driven by the Cockatoo community and overseen by a steering committee made up of local residents. The Ranges Ward Councillors, Cr Brett Owen, Cr Leticia Wilmot and Cr Tania Baxter, encouraged the community to get behind the project and see Cockatoo flourish. Mayor Jodie Owen said it was hoped the Cockatoo Collective Impact Project would bring the Cockatoo community together. “This is about the whole community coming together to form a united front,” he said. “Together we can achieve realistic,
measurable and achievable outcomes for the Cockatoo community. “It is our hope that coming together in this manner will strengthen relationships among service providers, community organisations and residents to work more collaboratively.” Cr Owen added that Collective Impact had been a successful initiative internationally and in Australia. “Collective Impact aims to engage the community, including community leaders, to share information and collectively work together to achieve long lasting outcomes,” she said. “This project will also raise community awareness of Council’s current and future projects and initiatives in Cockatoo and surrounds, and highlight the needs for future resources and infrastructure.” The community event will be held from 2pm-5pm on Sunday, 7 February, at the Cockatoo Community Complex, Pakenham Road, Cockatoo. For more information, contact Council’s Community Strengthening team on 1300 787 624.

Briefly Trees uprooted TWO full sized Japanese maple trees were ripped from the ground in Emerald and Gembrook on Thursday 7 January. In the early hours of the morning of 7 January, a tree from the front of the Gembrook Creche was torn from the ground with a car and straps. The straps broke and the damaged tree was left at the scene. The same day in the evening another Japanese maple was dug from the ground on Beenak Road in Emerald and dragged behind a car for some distance before also being left behind.
Motorcyclists warned POLICE are asking motorcyclists to be more careful after a spate of accidents in the Gembrook area occurred over the weekend all involving motorcyclists travelling too fast on corners. On Saturday 16 January, a 21-year-old male from Bayswater lost control of his bike on the Gembrook-Launching Place Road at the same corner another motorcyclist lost his life in 2011. The man from Bayswater was uninjured. On Sunday 17 January, a 59-year-old male from Rowville hit a car after travelling too fast into a corner on Gem-
brook Road in Gembrook. All riders involved in accidents this weekend were handed penalty notices. “Riders need to slow down and ride to conditions track before somebody is killed again,” Senior Constable Miles Gerrey said. “We have lovely roads with lovely views up here but it’s not a race track.”
Graffitti spree EMERALD Police are on the hunt for a two male offenders after the town was hit by a graffiti spree in the early morning of 4 January. The graffiti was described as “quite extensive” and “more than just tagging” with whole walls covered at various locations around the town. CCTV footage shows two males, approximately 16 to 18 years old, with their faces covered, vandalising building including Emerald Secondary College, the Commonwealth Bank, Puffing Billy Railway Station and Woolworths. Police are asking for public assistance to identify the offenders by the accompanying picture or by the use of the tags “MHK” with a crown on top and other tags “SHOT” and “ZANIC”. Anyone with information is urged to contact Emerald Police Station on 5954 0200.

Fit fans sneak in to park By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS
Visitors need to adhere to the rules of Emerald Lake Park. 147202
Unofficial paths causing damage The unauthorised paths have been compacting the ground. This has caused erosion and damaged new plants in revegetated areas, as well as stopped new indigenous plants from regenerating. Mr Alexander said guests needed to take notice. “Although this project has seen a great improvement environmentally, unfortunately visitors to the park are starting to make their own tracks through the reserve, often harming vegetation,” he said.
“Recently a bike track has been created which has caused significant damage. “Council and Friends of ELP dedicate a lot of time to ensuring the park is the best it can be for every resident or visitor to Cardinia Shire.” Mr Alexander said Council would be installing additional signage to encourage walkers to stay on the designated tracks and police would be conducting additional patrols. “The bush in and around ELP is very valuable and those responsible are vandalising the environment,” he said.
“ELP is a vibrant and natural environment, but it can’t remain so without support from all who visit there, playing their part in looking after the park. “There are so many fantastic paths to use so we would encourage everyone to stick to the paths provided, enjoy the park responsibly and contact the ELP rangers if you see any of this damage occurring.” For more information on the vegetation management project, visit www.cardinia. vic.gov.au.
the 1000 Steps early this morning. “Our rangers took an educational approach and spoke to the visitors about why the park was closed.” Between 50 and 100 people were instructed by rangers to vacate the park between 8am and noon on Wednesday 13 January with regular patrols being conducted until twilight. Ranger Hoogland said bushfire safety is an individual responsibility and people need to be aware that parks are closed for a good reason when weather conditions can lead to bushfires. “We urge people to act responsibly and safely and stay out of the park when it is closed,” he said. “If there was a fire, people who ignore the park closure are putting their own life at risk, and also the lives of our firefighters and the Dandenong Ranges community.” To find out what parks are affected by closures during fire danger periods, check the ‘Fire Affected Park List’ on the Parks Victoria website at www.parkweb.vic.gov.au or contact the Parks Victoria Information Centre on 13 19 63.

CARDINIA Shire Council is encouraging visitors to Emerald Lake Park (ELP) to stick to the dedicated paths. The environment of the park is under threat by unauthorised paths being created and used around the reserve. Council’s Open Space Coordinator, Kevin Alexander, said Friends of Emerald Lake Park and Council had been working to remove weedy trees and revegetate with native species in the park for the past four years as part of the Emerald Lake Park Vegetation Management Project.
PARKS Victoria Rangers have caught people in the Dandenong Ranges National Park despite the park being closed to the public due to fire risk levels. People were moved out of the park by rangers on Wednesday, 13 January, where they were climbing the 1000 Steps Kokoda Memorial Walk despite the 41 degree maximum forecast temperature. Parks Victoria is reminding people that some national parks will close on days where the fire danger rating is “severe” or above, and people should not be in the parks on those days. Parks Victoria’s Area Chief Ranger Dandenong and Yarra Ranges Matt Hoogland said while a majority of people stayed out of the parks, there were some who ignored the danger. “Bushfire safety is a serious issue, which is why we close the Dandenong Ranges National Park when it is not a safe place to be,” he said. “We had rangers at the 1000 Steps this morning conducting patrols; they found about 50 cars parked outside the park, and there were a number of people using

Letters Growth or sanity COULD I please appeal for awareness of the present speculative, selfish, ignorant and false talk of 'economic growth’? The word growth is meaningless unless qualified and even then is still meaningless if applied wrongly as in 'economic growth’ being used to mean growth of size and quantity. Good 'economic growth’ does not require increase in size and quantity, for it is the meeting of needs. Bad growth is always unnecessary increase in size and number - it is Quantitative Growth (QG). QG is not needed: To pass on technology benefits as we can do ample community trials; To increase personal and cultural strength as unnecessary consumption destroys personal values; To increase the economic pie so that the poor get more means more people even less well; To increase economic activity and social development as it means enslavement to machines; To give benefits of scale as this cannot be predicated when resources are finitely limited; To give us all a job for it is just chasing our tail; To provide entertainment as size has no cultural value; To provide for defence as trade already makes us defenceless; To decrease the financial disparity between people as the mindset is opposite in intent, and; For the successful continuation of human life. With every reason for QG refuted there is no answer to why it is continued, but it has been made clear above that there can be only one reason left; it is that our future is ransomed by a financial system dependent on a false and artificial QG structure. At 3.5 per cent of QG per year everything doubles every 20 years and in 100 years increases 32 times meaning more than 200 billion souls on the Earth in 2115. Of course, this is not on. Of course this means a desperate need for a new growth-less economy now. Barry Callanan, Mt Evelyn.

Young lives lost on our roads was the Mail's Issue of the Year in 2015. 148770
Condolences shared By PETER DOUGLAS THE Mail last week featured youth road deaths as its ‘Issue of the Year’, highlighting the horror year endured within the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley communities. In response to this story, Road Safety Education (RSE), a national non-profit organisation committed to educating youth, sought to offer further support. RSE Chief Executive Officer, Terry Birss, expressed sympathy and offered condolences to the families and friends of the youth who
died on local roads around the Yarra Ranges over the past 12 months. “On behalf of Road Safety Education, we offer our sincere condolences to the families and friends of these young people, who have tragically lost their lives,” Mr Birss said. “The impact of the loss of each of these young lives is immeasurable, both immediately and in the future.” Mr Birss said they had felt this impact time and time again and were committed to reducing youth road trauma.
“Evidence suggests that young people are most at risk of being involved in a serious crash in the first six months after transitioning from being a supervised learner to an independent provisional driver,” he said. “While hundreds of young people die on our roads every year; for every one of those deceased, 20 more suffer life-changing situations such as brain and spinal injuries. “We must equip our young drivers with the tools to make safe choices on the road, both as drivers and their passengers.”
Mr Birss said their national program, known as RYDA, lies at the centre of a set of programs developed for young people in Years 9 to 12. “It provides practical and powerful workshops to change the way young people think about road safety,” he said. The program has a presence in several schools in the Yarra Valley area including Upper Yarra Secondary College, Emerald Secondary College, Monbulk College, Upwey High School and Billanook College.

Kutcha will be one of the many top acts on the day. 148903
Survival Day last year was a wonderful experience for the guests. 148903
Help celebrate Indigenous day of culture THE annual Belgrave Survival Day will once again celebrate Indigenous culture and Australia’s First Nation's people on Australia Day, Tuesday 26 January. Now in its ninth year, this time the theme will be ‘No Room for Racism’ and, as always, it is free and family friendly. The special guest for this year will be one of Australia’s most respected and inspiring Aboriginal singer/songwriters, Kutcha, whose music, theatre and community work has made him a legend nationally within Indigenous communities. Also taking to the stage will be The Deans, who will bring classic sounds and grooves. Then, there will be the fabu-
lous voices of the Mullum Mullum Choir and the vibes of the Hip Hop Crew, as well as the chance to participate in Digeridoo Mediation with Gnarnayarrahe Waitiarie (Uncle Joey). Jim Poulter will talk about his new book ‘The Dust of the Mindye’, which aims to show how the smallpox plague of 1789 was deliberate genocide by the two top British military officers in the First Fleet. Terry Mason of the Awabakal language group will also address the crowd and discuss the need for Treaties with the First Nations Peoples as a means of Aboriginal Sovereignty rather than constitutional recognition. There will be many activities to keep the kids (and adults) busy with fun music and
dance, art and craft opportunities and more, as well as the children’s playground. Alternatively, soak up the atmosphere on a picnic rug in front of the stage or stroll around the market and information stalls. Organisers have catered for all food requirements, including traditional bush tucker and a food truck. The event will be held from 12noon to 4.30pm at Borthwick Park (next to Belgrave Pool) on Benson Street, Belgrave. A committee of volunteers organises the Belgrave Survival Day and new volunteers are being sought for next year’s event. For further details, email survivalday@gmail.com.

A CORONER’S report will be prepared after a woman, 74, was found deceased at the scene of a Menzies Creek house fire early Saturday, 16 January. A newspaper delivery person first alerted authorities to smoke coming from the School Road property about 6am and promptly contacted triple-zero. The nearby Menzies Creek CFA members

“Police and CFA forced entry into the home and discovered the deceased in the lounge room,” he said. However, it’s believed the fire started on a mattress in the bedroom, which could have been smouldering for some time before catching alight. Sen Const Fooks said while the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, he believed it would be put down as a tragic accident. “It could be anything from an electric blanket, to smoking, to a lamp falling on a bed,” he said.

The brigades quickly extinguished the fire, though the house has extensive smoke damage. Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit detective, Senior Constable John Fooks, was among those who attended the scene. He told the Mail the sole occupant was likely overcome by smoke and could not be revived.
LOCAL community groups, the CFA and collaborative partnerships in the Dandenong Ranges have the chance to apply for a share in grants worth more than $1 million. The offer is available thanks to the second round of the Dandenong Ranges Environmental and Bushfire Fuel Reduction Community Grants, supported by the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme. The grants will enable local groups and partnerships in the Dandenong Ranges to undertake important work to reduce the impact of pest animals, improve the habitat through revegetation and reduce the fuel load by removing woody weeds and other invasive plants. This second round aims to build on the successful projects undertaken through the first round of the programme. There are three types
of grants available, including: Small Projects – under $10,000 for short-term, smaller projects; Medium Projects - up to $50,000 for longerterm projects, delivering multiple activities across one year; Large Projects – greater than $50,000 for projects that plan to address multiple threat or issues in a staged process over one year at a landscape scale. Federal Member for La Trobe, Jason Wood, said this project is part of a three-year, $3 million commitment. “The National Landcare Programme is helping communities across Australia to undertake important local projects,” he said. For more details, visit www.ppwcma.vic.gov.au. Applications close at 5pm on Monday, 11 April.
La Trobe MP Jason Wood is urging groups to consider applying for the bushfire reduction grants. 142103

Cancer group shattered By KATH GANNAWAY A VOLUNTEER cancer support group says its faith in Yarra Ranges Council is shattered after being refused access to a vacant shire building to provide help for people with cancer. Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink asked in April last year for the use of the vacant Seville Maternal and Child Health Centre, but say they have been ‘given the run around’ with council representatives seemingly unable to comprehend what it is they want, and need, to offer. Yarra Ranges Council, however, says it values their work, has done everything possible to provide a viable facility and is working with the group to find a viable facility that meets their needs. In a letter to the Mail in December, YVLIP co-conveners, Judith Sturt and Judith McGrath, said the Yarra Ranges had a high number of men and women who were living daily with cancer. And they were keen to establish a more prominent presence in the valley to expand the services they already offered. Those services include counselling, pastoral care, advocacy, transport, providing equipment, education and respite care. The group has a respite house in the Yarra Valley. They are associated with the Cancer Council of Victoria and have the support of many local organisations who fund-raise for them, including Warburton Senior Citizens, Seville Cricket Club and Upper Yarra Secondary College. Ms Sturt said they were frustrated and disappointed that what they believed to be the best location and building, with passing public transport and

Ms Sturt said they wanted a place that they could open three days a week to start, and possibly longer depending on need and volunteer availability. Yarra Ranges Council’s Director Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, said council’s policy for council facilities was to consolidate
community services in central locations where like-minded community service groups could co-exist. He said the Seville building would need significant funding to upgrade it to a useable condition. “However, the facilities we have offered are in a similar location and provide a suitable space to meet the group’s needs, Mr Varmalis said. Those spaces are at the Upper Yarra Family Centre, Seville Community Hall, Wandin North Community
Hall and the Yarraburn Centre, but the group say none of these is suitable and that they have had a number of discussions with council representatives explaining why. Ms Sturt, however, said they did not meet their needs. “We have said this on numerous occasions and the fact that they are saying we are looking to run the services one day a week, and that these places are suitable, shows they are not listening or comprehending our need, she
said. Ms McGrath said the building could be refurbished for very little cost and that they had another community organisation willing to help with any work needed. She said there was also talk that the land had been earmarked for housing development. Mr Varmalis said the future of the building was under review. The site is currently zoned as a Public Use Zone for Local Government.

Be very wary of haystack fires By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE CFA has issued a warning to farmers to be aware of spontaneous haystack fires after there were an above average number of such fires in 2015. Hay that is baled before it is fully cured or hay that becomes damp before baling can lead to high internal temperatures and possible combustion. CFA Operations Manager Stuart Broad has provided some pointers on how farmers can minimise the risk of spontaneous haystack comYarra Valley Community Health dietitians Stacey Holden and Carla Johnson, with dietitian and preventative health co-bustion on their farm. ordinator Jo Stanford. 148997 Mr Broad suggests: having a number of smaller haystacks rather than one large stack so that if they do ignite loss will be minimised. haystacks away from · Locating potential sources of external ignition including powerlines, public roads, machinery sheds etc. is a good way of mitigating fire risk. Mr Broad suggests not storing hay in machinery sheds as hot machinery can start fires. While it is important to monitor internal temperature of the haystack, don’t rely on a temperature probe as your only source of information. Get to know your haystack, watch for steam rising from stacks, mould, and unusual smells and slumping. Create a firebreak around the stacks so any ignition of the stack does not lead to further damage. If the internal temperature of a haystack does reach dangerous levels, Mr Broad recommends notifying your local CFA before you pull the bale apart to cool as hot bales exposed to air can rapidly ignite. Further information on haystack management and farm fire safety can be obtained from the CFA publications downloaded from the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au.

By KATH GANNAWAY KNOWING exactly what he is eating, and not eating, was what drove Cockatoo carpenter/builder, Dave Key, to adopt permaculture as a way of life. A member of both the Mountain District Permaculture Group and the Yarra Valley Permaculture Group, his small backyard has been transformed through permaculture principles to provide an abundance of fruit, vegetables, eggs and meat. that permaculture uses the inherent qualities of plants and animals, combined with the natural characteristics of landscapes and structures, to produce a life-supporting system using the smallest practical area. Dave’s interpretation is that it’s a system of design that works with nature, instead of against it. And he makes the point that it’s about a lot more than just growing fruit and vegetables. Dave raises ducks, chickens and turkeys for food, but they also help with natural manure, eggs and as pest control.
Where function meets form
Ducks love snails. Guinea pigs keep the weeds down and act as an organic, mean machine when it comes to converting food and garden scraps to fertiliser. “It all starts with good design, and zoning is a big aspect,” he said. “You can produce an excessively large amount of produce in a small space if you design it well from the outset. “There are a lot of new trees on dwarf root stock which, although they’re only two metres high will produce well in excess of 50 kilos

over fruit trees to protect the crop from birds and possums, wombats, rabbits and other critters that may care to freerange in the vegie patch or orchard. In a nutshell, to quote one of the ‘founders’ of permaculture in Australia, Bill Mollison, the aim of permaculture is “... to create systems that are ecologicallysound and economically viable, which provide for their own needs, do not exploit or pollute, and are therefore sustainable in the long-term”. His further explanation was

It's the plant to collect WHEN the Victorian Herb Society was asked, 25 years ago, to choose a plant to ‘collect’, they chose the salvia. Ray Boatman was president of the society at the time and is very possibly this versatile plant’s most ardent fan. In his own small garden at Ferntree Gully, he has a collection of around 60 different salvias. In fact, impressive as that is, it’s just a fraction of the more than 900 known varieties that form part of the salvia family. Home to The Victorian Salvia Study Group and its collection of around 300 different varieties and cultivars is at Nobelius Heritage Park in Emerald. “Twenty-five years ago when the Herbarium in Victoria started the Ornamental Plant Collections Association, they asked various groups to specialise in plants that seemed to be disappearing from catalogues and gardens,” Mr Boatman said. Salvias are found virtually all around the world, although there are no salvias native to Australia. The huge variety of flower types, leaves, colours and fragrances is one of the attractions for enthusiasts and general gardeners. Apart from having a reputation as a ‘hardy’ plant, Mr Boatman said almost all had very highly fragrant leaves, and
many could be used for cooking and medicinal purposes. “Quite a number of our group had a liking for salvia at the time we were asked to choose a plant to study, so it developed from there,” he said. The aim of the group is to promote the growing of salvias and to correctly name existing and new salvias. They started with a research garden at Hampton and one at Emerald to test the plants in different soils and climatic conditions. After two or three years they were given a substantial plot at Nobelius and established the display garden there. The garden is open to the public on selected days throughout the year, but there is a great deal of work done behind the scenes, including the publication of Salvia News and providing speakers for garden clubs, working bees and picnic days where the growth and development of the salvias is the main focus. The Salvia Study Group has supplied plants to botanical gardens in Geelong and Melbourne and over the years produced, often more by accident than design, some new varieties grown by members, including Wendy’s Wish grown by Wendy Smith and Snow White grown by Trudy Fry. For more information on the beautiful Salvia, and the work of the Salvia Study Group, visit www.salvias.org.au .

HEALESVILLE’S Icue Homes is taking the Ikea concept to a whole new level – perhaps even one that could change the world. After two years of research and one year to build a prototype, the business has successfully designed a clean, green modular house that can be built, transported and constructed at breakneck speed. But here’s where it gets really interesting. Not only can the house quite literally be rolled off the back of a truck, it is entirely self-sufficient. And self-sufficiency means just that. There is no need for connections to electricity, gas, or sewerage – everything the house needs to be functional and ready to go. All with minimal construction time. From emergency or temporary accommodation, to lifestylers or those simply wishing to downsize – it’s not hard to see the sky’s the limit for this environmentally friendly concept. Icue Homes is the brainchild of
Healesville local Colin Ure, who said he felt inspired after becoming frustrated when seeking out a modular home. He said the idea of a transportable, easily constructed design really took shape when he heard about the Surefoot foundation product (pictured), which featured on ABC television’s ‘New Inventors’ program. As a foundation option, Surefoot requires no concrete or heavy machinery, just a jackhammer and a shovel. Colin said the design worked like the roots of a tree, with metal rods acting like the roots which were inserted through a metal ‘foot’. He said Surefoot was the key to making the house design possible. “Surefoot spreads heavy loads well and can be installed quickly and on many terrains,” he said. “It can be adjusted, which means the ground doesn’t have to be level. “There is no clutter under the home, too, which can be useful for storage.” Once firmly on the ground, the home runs fully off-grid, thanks to the low power requirements that
run off just three solar panels. The uniqueness of the concept again takes shape when you grasp the simple yet ingenious plumbing and sewerage system, which features a composting toilet. Colin hoped the house design would offer many solutions. “We’ve taken a holistic look at the modular home – this comes with everything including the kitchen sink,” he said. “And all of this from a little corner in Healesville.” It’s not hard to see how this design could help in cyclone-prone areas such as the US or Vanuatu, or be used in places such as West Africa. “You could see them becoming a type of hospital, school or dormitory, the possibilities are endless,” he said. To top off the package, among the best features are the high ceilings, open-plan living and comfortable bathroom. The space is very liveable. “There’s no feeling like you’re in a prison cell or an elevator,” Colin said. “It’s not luxury living but it’s not
uncomfortable, either. “It would be perfect for lifestylers, pensioners, it’s completely comfortable but without the electricity bills.” Other features include a high bushfire rating and an ability to withstand high-wind conditions. One of Icue Homes’ first clients established a home in Gembrook and commented that it is expandable, which meant she could develop on the design at a later date. At this stage, the package costs around $99,000 but Colin is hoping with government and investor support, eventually it could become cheaper. In fact, Colin has written a letter to the office of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, which issued an encouraging response. Colin aims to continue lobbying with government representatives. He believes the design could help Australia become the innovation nation, as well as helping out the manufacturing industry. For more information, contact Colin on 0438 866 438 or visit www.icuehomes.com.

Returning to study can be life-changing AS THE holiday period moves through January, many people start planning for the year ahead. If your New Year’s resolution is going to become a reality, the time for making some changes might be now! You may be one of the many Victorians who left school before completing Year 12. There are many reasons people may find themselves disengaged from education. Sometimes life gets in the way; family problems, learning difficulties, conflict with friends, bullying, illness or mental health issues. The good news is you are not alone. Fortunately, there are pathways back to education that can get you back on track and open up a whole new world of opportunities. Pursuing education is the single most important way to gain a new career, better job prospects or a new lease on life. People return to study the VCE for numerous reasons, including: Pursuing a qualification that may lead to better job opportunities; Looking for a pathway to change career direction; Expanding general knowledge, interests and gaining a sense of achievement; Completing additional VCE
· · ·
Young adult learners will gain plenty of opportunities. 148937 subjects to improve an ATAR score for intake the following year. You may have just com-
·
pleted Year 12 at school and be disappointed with your results. You have the option of enrolling in a new subject or re-
peating a subject at MDLC and striving for a higher ATAR score. If you didn’t complete
enough subjects to finish your VCE or get an ATAR, you can enrol in VCE subjects at MDLC and join the other students who
are looking to expand their horizons and broaden further study or employment opportunities by completing their secondary studies. The message is ... don’t give up! There are other pathways available to achieve your career goals. Returning to study through the VCE is an option for adults as well. If you have been away from full-time schooling for a full year, you only need to complete eight units to achieve your VCE. Units must include two in English at any level and three sequences of units of three and four in other subjects. If you are not interested in achieving the certificate, you can do any VCE subject of your choice, just to enjoy the experience of learning. You don’t even need to sit an exam! The other good news is that VCE studies are courses eligible for government funding, so it’s an affordable option for most people. If VCE is not your game, MDLC also offers VCAL as an alternative, equivalent secondary education qualification. For more information, contact MDLC on 9758 7859 or visit Youth Central at www. youthcentral.vic.gov.au or www.vcaa.vic.edu.au.

Bernasconi to deliver some sweet sounds
Not to be missed Seth Hynes
By PETER DOUGLAS THE Selby Folk Club has hosted some fine musicians in its time, but not many more talented with a guitar than Justin Bernasconi. After first rising to prominence with folk group The Stillsons, Bernasconi has been impressing audiences with his debut solo album, Winter Pick. The accomplished guitarist will now unveil more solo material at the Selby club on Friday 5 February, with doors opening at 7.30pm (tickets $10). Bernasconi was born in London but arrived in Australia in 2004 and he told the Mail it was a life-changing move. “I headed to Australia to uncover the renowned Melbourne music scene,” he said. “There was always an affinity with Australia for me. “When I was younger, everything changed for me when I heard AC/DC. “Most people were into rap around that time but it was AC/DC who inspired me; I was too young to know the lyrics but their energy grabbed me.” He formed The Stillsons with Cat Canteri and Ben Franz in 2006 and they
Justin Bernasconi is one of the country's most accomplished guitar players. 148861 released three highly acclaimed albums. But in more recent years, Bernasconi has been finding his feet as a solo artist.
Interestingly, he felt the decision was not all of his own doing. “The songwriting I was doing probably led me that way,” he said.
“Sometimes you don’t know where the song will lead you, sometimes you’re not in control, my songwriting led me to going solo. “It has taken a while for the solo show to develop, to get used to not having a band around.” His influences range across many genres, including folk, bluegrass, ragtime and blues. But Bernasconi said it always came back to the guitar. “Guitar is still the love of my life ... I started about age 9, bugging my parents for a guitar,” he said. He felt his technique has changed slightly since his work with The Stillsons. “The past three years in particular, I feel like I’ve had more time to practise, to focus in different areas,” he said. “My love of guitar has never changed, the more, the better – a new practise regime.” To celebrate Bernasconi’s performance in the Hills, the Mail is offering a double-pass giveaway. For you chance to win, simply email editor@mailnewsgroup.com.au and include your name and contact details.
And pigs might fry FOR the first time in Victoria, the Yarra Valley will host the inaugural Victorian ‘2016 Cider and Pork Festival’. The event will be held over the Australia Day long weekend among the vines at the picturesque Rochford Wines. Celebrating all things apple and pig at the two-day festival, Victorian revellers can celebrate the humble pig and crushed apple, following the success of this annual festival in Western Australia’s Swan Valley over the past three years. Ice cold from the tap, more than 75 international and Australian ciders will be on showcase, with the chance to sample some of Melbourne’s finest dining fare at 15 different food trucks and pop-restaurants from the southern dining capital along with masterclasses and question and answer sessions for the truly ardent fans, too. The festival will also showcase more
than 60 different and mouth-watering pork dishes from locally sourced produce and leading Melbourne restaurants and food trucks. Masterclasses held over both days of the festival will enable visitors to make the most of the cider tastings and learn about varying ranges of ciders from all over the world-including France, Australia and the UK, also demonstrating the endless food pairing capabilities between pork and fine cider. Event organiser Jesse Wilson encouraged locals to consider attending. “Pouring a diverse variety of cider styles from Australian and international regions, you can be sure that our leading local cider and beer specialists - especially the likes of St Ronan’s, Napoleon Cider and Hargreaves Hill - all from the Yarra Valley region - will find something to tantalise your taste buds with,” he said.

WITH a running theme of powerful women, let’s look back at some of the December releases that I didn’t have time to cover before the Mail’s Christmas break. Suffragette is a harrowing yet inspiring historical drama about the brave women who tirelessly fought to achieve universal suffrage in the early twentieth century. The film features flawless period accuracy and Oscar-worthy performances from Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter (with this being Mulligan’s second film about feminine strength in 2015, after Far From The Madding Crowd). Joy (by American Hustle director David O’Russell) follows Joy Mangano (Jennifer Lawrence), the inventor of the Miracle Mop. It sounds like a lame premise, but Lawrence delivers yet another magnetic performance and the suspense is phenomenal, as the ironwilled Joy perseveres against family disapproval, crushing debt and business backstabbing on numerous fronts to become a multi-millionaire from her invention. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a solidly-made and thrilling adventure that should satisfy die-hard Jedi and casual viewers alike. While the pacing is slightly disjointed and the film follows the first Star Wars film almost beatfor-beat, The Force Awakens is elevated from being a mere rehash by stunning visual design, outstanding performances (including break-out heroine Daisy Ridley), enthralling action and simple, efficient character development. With a great 2015 behind us, we can now look forward to this year’s promising releases.

SUMMER can be a rough season for your pets if they suffer from allergies. The problem with cats and dogs is they cannot tell you when they are feeling a bit off, so veterinarian extraordinaire Dr Adele Scannell from Animal Aid has provided some helpful pointers to keep your pets happy and healthy this summer. “To minimise the chance of exposure to problem plants and irritants, it is best to prevent access to areas where these plants may be,” she said. “This may involve keeping your dog or cat on a lead or harness and avoiding walking them or letting them play in areas where problem plants may be growing. Parks and off-leash dog play areas can be of particular risk and keeping a watchful eye for suspect plants when your dog is out for a walk is a good idea.” Dr Adele has noted a useful way to help minimise exposure to irritation from plants is to wipe down sparsely haired areas of an animal’s coat after it has been outside with a damp, cool, cloth. “This may help to remove some of the allergen burden and help reduce the severity of a skin allergy,” she said. Many animals will manifest allergy symptoms in different
Dr Adele Scannell with a tiny little patient at her vet clinic Picture: CONTRIBUTED at Animal Aid 149025 ways – common signs you pet has come into contact with an irritant are itching and scratching, red skin with scabs, hair loss and sometimes even raised bumps that look like pimples. “Animals that have a skin allergy may also be irritated and restless as they have a constant source of irritation that is difficult to control,” Dr Adele said. Dr Adele said fleas could be a real issue during summer and the best measure against fleas for your pet was to take preventative action. “Good flea control is important all year round but particularly during the summer months when fleas are most prevalent,” she said.
“It is important to watch for any weeds or new plants developing in garden beds and lawn and removing any wandering jew if it is found.” If you think your pet has come into contact with a plant or other irritant that has set off an allergic reaction, the best course of action is to get in contact with your local vet before any infections other problems set in. “Different medications can be used to help settle the itch and to treat any secondary skin infections,” Dr Adele said. “Sometimes topical treatments and sensitive skin shampoos can also be tried to help with skin irritation and allergies.”

SUMMER is a great time for your garden to bloom and really flourish in the bright sunlight. You may already have water-based plants like water lilies or lotus or you may be thinking about adding these beautiful water plants to your garden. Either way we have some helpful tips on how to properly care of water based plants during the warmer weather. While water lilies and lotus may seem like very similar plants, they each require their own care methods so your summer water garden can come to life and grow to their absolute best. Some important tips to remember when caring for water lotus and lilies are: 1. Lotus need six hours of sun a day. When deciding on the location of your lotus plant, make sure it’s a part of your garden that gets lots of direct sunlight. 2. Keep lotus and lilies away from flowing water or fountains. Lotus and lily is happy in still water where they are not going to get moved around or washed away and can establish a strong and healthy root systems. 3. Don’t submerge the growing leaves. When filling your pond or bowl for the first time or refilling when some of the water has evaporated in the heat, make sure the lotus or lily leaves are not submerged to your plant won't photosynthesise properly. 4. Re-pot your lotus in a larger
container. Summer is time for strong growth for water plants and replanting them when they come out of winter dormancy may be a good move if they are running out of space. 5. Summer is the season you need to fertilise your water plants to keep them healthy and growing strong. 6. Standard water lilies need more than four hours a day of sunshine to flower. It’s important that your water lilies get plenty of sun but not so much that they will be burnt by the harsh summer heat. 7. Tropical lilies need full sun all day. Similar to water lotus, tropical varieties of water lily will grow their best when they get plenty of sun so summer is great time to prune any surrounding trees or plants that may be blocking their access so the sunshine.
8. If growing tropical water lilies, it is important to remember to fertilise twice a year, once in mid-January and again in midFebruary to ensure your tropical plants are receiving all the nutrients they need. 9. If you find mosquitos are breeding in the water that your lilies or lotus are growing in and ruining your garden experience, you can put fish in the water to control the mosquito population. The fish in the pond or bowl will eat the mosquito larvae and keep them to a minimum. Pet stores will be able to advise what types of fish are best for this use. 10. Evaporation of the water for your plants can be a really serious issue during the summer months. The pots or bowls have to have water in them to ensure healthy plants so keeping them topped up is very important.

Walsh earns a spot By PETER DOUGLAS
Representative honour for rising star MONBULK all-rounder Brodie Emmett, 20, has been selected to represent the Victorian Country Under 21 team to play the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union Under 21s in a one-day game at Benalla on Sunday, 14 February. Selection process for the Country team is based on performances in the Under 21 Country Cup, where Emmett recently scored 71 for the South East Country Region against North East Country. The South East region comprises players from the Yarra Valley, Ferntree Gully, West Gippsland and Mornington Peninsula associations. 149063
LYSTERFIELD Captain Coach Nathan Walsh has been rewarded for a stellar performance with the bat at representative level. The opener scorched 254 runs at an average of 50.8 at the recent Australian Country Championships in Mt Gambier, a feat that earned him a place in the Australian Country XI team. The event is an annual tournament which showcases the best cricket talent from regional areas around Australia. Though Walsh is a former first XI Premier cricketer, with Ringwood and Fitzroy-Doncaster, this season he returned to lead his home club at Lakefield Reserve. The move made him eligible to represent Victoria Country, a challenge he was only too keen to take up. “There were some extremely good cricketers out there, many would be at home playing Premier cricket,” he said. “It was a great tournament and I’d like to thank the club and (Ferntree Gully District Cricket) associa-
tion for supporting me.” At the top of the order, Walsh helped his side of too strong starts with scores of 7, 92, 45, 51 and 59. The clear highlight was his 92 from just 76 balls against East Asia Pacific, which included eight 4s and five 6s. He said it was an interesting experience playing against the East Asia Pacific team, which included representatives from Vanuatu and Japan. “They tended to go hard at the ball early, they’ve obviously based their game around Twenty20 cricket,” he said. “But they were impressive and it was great fun.” Walsh was the top run-scorer over the five matches, nudging out South Australia’s Ben Smith (232 runs) and was awarded the Don Bradman award. The Victorian Country XI finished the tournament in second place, with South Australia Country narrowly claiming the top prize. Walsh’s focus will now turn towards Lysterfield Cricket Club, which is looking towards a strong run home to finals.
Tons of runs belted under the sun By IAN HARLEY FIVE batsmen made centuries across the eight games played in the top two divisions as clubs returned to two-day cricket. Once again it was Johnathon ‘Penfolds’ Levell leading the way. Belgrave posted 7/388 in their game against Ferntree Gully, with Levell making 119. Doug Oaten (85) and Matt Johnson (48) ensured the Magpies set a large total. Bryce Galvin’s return of 3/105 for the Blues takes him to 24 wickets for the season, while Levell has 543 runs to his name. Jake Best has made his second century for the season as The Basin made 236 at home to Eildon Park. Best led the way for the Bears with 100, while Danny Rundle (31) and Ronnie Heskes (66*) made an impact. Unfortunately for the Bears, four batsmen failed to trouble the scorers. Also making an impact was Nathan Caton-Robinson, snaring five wickets for the Panthers, becoming the leading wicket taker in the Association this
season. Knoxfield compiled 8/298 by the close of play in their game against Johnson Park. The Knights’ Tom Boxell posted 107 and was accompanied by Luke Scanlan 75 and Adam Maloney 41 to set the Sharks a fair total. Steven Devenish and Trent Barrington toiled away, taking four and three wickets respectively. Knox Gardens looked to be setting larger total before failing away to be dismissed for 217 against Mountain Gate at Windermere Reserve. Shannon Small (62) and Jarrod Butcher (60) got going for the Falcons but from 4/189 they lost 6/28. Cam Wheeler was the destroyer for the ‘Gators, taking 5/49. Upwey made their second highest score of the season, setting Monbulk a target of 252 at Monbulk Recreation reserve. Chris Jewell (71), Dain Howe (42) and Steve Gannell (32) shared the workload for the Tigers. David McKay and Chris Coen were the best bowlers for the Hawks.
In Decoite Shield, a century to Anthony Brolic (120*) saw Lysterfield post 9/279 against St Johns Tecoma, while Ben Rawlings made 136 for Footballers (4/282) against Knox Boronia Churches. Harley McDermott snared five wickets as South Belgrave dismissed Upper Ferntree Gully for 210. Evan’s spell-binding double hat-trick
Ben and Den
By STEVE UTTING ALL four Monbulk senior teams were back on the park this weekend, starting a two-day match. The seniors will be chasing 251 against Upwey next weekend with Dave Mackay and Chris Coen both picking up three wickets. The seconds will be defending 245 after skipper Jason Simmonds and young opener Aaron Gillard both made good scores. In the thirds, it was a day of highlights and they will be looking for an outright win next week. Evan Binding took four wickets in four balls, which is only the fourth hat-trick at the club in the past 35 years. Liam Mackin then came out and smashed his first senior century. The fourths are also in a strong position thanks to over 100 runs from the Badgery boys; father and son, Bob and Thomas. There were no junior games on the weekend and all junior teams will recommence training this week with their first match this weekend. Check Mycricket for match details. Thanks and well done to the well over 100 Monbulk cricketers and families that attended the Stars match last Thursday. It was a great night, especially the 1st innings with the Monbulk crowd the centre of attention on the big screen. Well done to Aussie Richardson, Tyren Utting and Rab Noonan who all represented the Ferntree Gully District Cricket Association in the VMCU carnival over the past two weeks. In other representative news, Shane Cosstick, Chris Coen and Brodie Emmett have been selected in a squad to play VCCL Country Week at Melbourne venues February 1-5. Scores: 1st XI - Upwey 251 (D McKay 3/33, C Coen 3/70) v Monbulk. 2nd XI - Monbulk 9/245 (J Simmonds 80, A Gillard 46) v Upwey. 3rd XI - Knoxfield 105 (E Binding 4/6 incl. double hattrick) and 1/55 v Monbulk 3/245 dec. (L Mackin 103no, D Clark 59no) 4th XI-Monbulk 4/190 (B Badgery 65, T Badgery 45) v Aura Vale 3/116.
By BROC REYNOLDS HAVING survived the Christmas and New Year’s spirits, and several festive seasons in several days, the Emerald Golf Club members fronted for a round of foursomes. After visiting more trees than a dozen dogs, Ben Balfour and Dennis Fuller (18) rode their handicap home for a nett 69 and victory. The best of the rest were Peter Jones and Leigh Morison (22) on 70 followed by Ken Hill and Broc Reynolds (16.5) on 72.5 followed again by Jeff Marsh and Ken Sumsion (24) on 73 with the rest somewhere south of these numbers. Steve Town and Ross Martin (11.5) came in with the best off-the-stick score of 85 with conditions appearing benign but sufficiently malignant to cause all some strife. Fuller and Balfour were a couple back on 87. Peter Glasscock was nearest the pin on the 4th, Broc Reynolds the 7th, John Fisher on the 12th and 13th, and Seppy Krummenacher won the pro pin lolly on the 18th. The ladies event saw a runaway victory to Daisy Mackey and Irene Cranston when their solid scoring left the rest of the ladies in their wake. Next Saturday is a par event and the following Saturday is AGM day followed, after a fun round of golf, the annual presentation function.

Cameron’s the latest model HEALESVILLE teenager Cameron Pearson is making a name for himself in the Late Model racing world, racing for an Australian title over the weekend in Western Australia. Pearson, 16, raced in the DiCandilo Steel City Australian Late Model Championship at the Perth Motorplex on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 January, following a win at Ballarat’s Redline Raceway in December. The racer’s Ballarat win was his maiden Late Model feature race, coming out on top after 25 laps – which he described as a “dream run”. “Once I crossed the finish line, it was quite a surreal feeling, because I couldn’t believe what I had done,” he said. “When you think about it, I’m only in my second race meeting and here I was, parading around the track, holding the chequered flag after I had taken out the feature race. “It was an awesome experience.” Despite his stellar win last month, Pearson was unable to clinch the Australian title in Perth, with WA’s Kodee Brown winning the competition among a strong field of 49 competitors. In the lead-up to the event, he said he knew the titles would be
a step-up from the Ballarat race. “The Australian Title is going to be a whole new level, but I’m looking forward to getting the opportunity to race against the country’s best racers and enjoying the whole experience,” he said. In the Heat 10 race, Pearson placed seventh, also placing 14th in the A Main race and recording a DNF (Did Not Finish) in the B Main race. Pearson previously drove two seasons in Junior Sedans, finishing on the podium in a Northern Territory title race, and winning two Alexandra Speedway Track Championships.

Spirited racers take tarmac title A FERNTREE Gully businessman and his co-driver will spend the new year in high spirits after receiving an Australian rally championship title before Christmas. Craig Dean and his co-driver Emma Quigley received the 2015 Australian Tarmac Rally Championship on 6 December, winning the Snowy River Sprint over Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December. The sprint involved 20 stages set over 320 kilometres, in the hills behind Lakers Entrance, near Orbost. Mr Dean and Ms Quigley entered the final round of the four-event race with a win in the penultimate round, driving a 2015-model Shelby GT Mustang and boasting 224 points – some 39 ahead of the next competitors. With double points available
in the last round, the win was by no means guaranteed, but a cautious approach saw Mr Dean and Ms Quigley take the title after South Australia’s Tristan and Kate Catford crashed, and the previous year’s champions, Danny Traverso and Bernie Webb, blew a gearbox. “It’s been a fantastic event and series,” said Mr Dean, a muscle car specialist, who added that the final round’s easy win was not his preferred way to race. “We would have rather gone full-on against the others, but that’s motorsport, and things happen. “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed competing against them and look forward to doing more of it.” For more information, visit www.australiantarmacrally.com.
