RURAL mental health advocate Alison Fairleigh is this year’s Australia Day Ambassador for the Southern Downs. Alison arrives on Monday to take part in the region’s Australia Day activities, but this will be far from her first visit to the area. “I grew up on a cattle property near Kingaroy in SE Qld,” she said. “I went to university in Toowoomba and I also taught at a school in Toowoomba for five years. I have had the opportunity to visit Stanthorpe and Warwick on many occasions. “I’m very much looking forward to my visit there again - it is a stunningly beautiful part of the world! “However, now that I’ve acclimatised to the weather in North Queensland, I’m a little worried I might find the evenings in Stanthorpe a little chilly. I’ve been advised to pack a cardigan!” Alison is a passionate advocate for rural mental health and farming communities. In 2013, she was chosen as the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) Queensland Rural Woman of the Year for her advocacy in improved rural mental health services and suicide prevention, and it is her mission to ensure that mental health is seen to be just as important as physical health within the agricultural sector. Over the years, she has success-

By TANIA PHILLIPS SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council is inviting everyone to enjoy a great Australia Day on Tuesday 26 January with celebrations and Australia Day awards ceremonies to be held at Warwick and Stanthorpe. Mayor Peter Blundell said Australia Day was the perfect opportunity to have a family day out and celebrate everything that is great about Australia. “Celebrations for Warwick will
begin at 8am and this year will be held at Leslie Park,” he said. “Council is really looking forward to Australia Day celebrations and the awards ceremony at Leslie Park, which is a great central location for all the community to gather and celebrate in a relaxed and informal environment. “Australia Day celebrations at Leslie Park will kick off from 8am with an Aussie barbecue breakfast, and there will also be childrens’ activities and entertainment.
"The formal part of the day will start at 10am with the northern region Australia Day awards and citizenship ceremonies. “Celebrations for Stanthorpe will begin at 2pm at Weeroona Park. There will be musical entertainment, food stalls, flag raising, a citizenship ceremony and of course the southern region Australia Day awards ceremony. “The Stanthorpe celebrations are a much anticipated highlight for the Granite Belt and many locals return
every year to watch the wood chop, billy-boiling and other Australia Day activities. “We look forward to seeing many people at both celebrations and also paying tribute to our local heroes during the awards ceremonies,” he said. Mayor Blundell said other smaller communities, including Killarney, Pratten, Allora and Glengallan, will also hold celebrations and he encouraged residents to support and participate in these local events.
Celebrations at Tenterfield By TANIA PHILLIPS THIS year Tenterfield’s Australia Day event will be held in Bruxner Park with an atmosphere of music and celebration. Bring the kids, a hat, a rug to sit on or a folding chair and enjoy the atmosphere. The celebrations will kick
off around 8am (NSW) with local musician Peter Harris providing his unique blend of swing and folk music to entertain while Tenterfield Lions Club will be on hand with their super new catering van to provide a great Australia Day breakfast including sausages, bacon and egg rolls, tea, coffee and cold drinks.
The Civic Welcome and Awards Ceremony begins at 9am with awards being presented this year for all categories. In addition, this year the names of all nominees will be announced so that due recognition can be given to all these very worthy community members.
Winner of 2015 Citizen of the Year, Ken Poulsen with nominator Laurie Belll.
Support these local Australia Day nominees NOMINATIONS for the 2016 Australia Day Awards are in and the award winners will be announced at Australia Day celebrations next week at ceremonies in Warwick and Stanthorpe. Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell said he was very pleased to see the community getting on board and taking the time to nominate those people who have offered outstanding contributions to communities across the Southern Downs. “I’m thrilled that Council received
more than 35 award nominations to the Warwick and Stanthorpe Australia Day Award programs, across the eight award categories ... these awards recognise the outstanding contribution of individuals and groups who, through their commitment and effort, make our region a better place to live,” he said. The Northern region Australia Day celebration will kick-off from 8am at Leslie Park, Warwick with the official Awards and Citizenship ceremonies
to start at 10am. The Australia Day celebrations for the Southern region will be held at Weeroona Park in Stanthorpe from 2pm, with the official awards and citizenship proceedings to begin at 3.45pm. Warwick nominees: Ralph Afflick, Raye Batham, Simeon Burrill, Adam Byrne, Hilary de Mestre-Thrift, Rosemary Easton, Jeff Ferguson, Janice Flood, Jason Gard, Millie Hauff, Jill Hulme, Robert Keogh, Nathanial Leigh, Jacob Meiklejohn, David O’Leary, Aaron Payne and John Telf-

From front page Alison said this was the second year she had been a part of the Ambassador program, heading to Cloncurry last year “where the temperature was 42 degrees in the shade on Australia Day and one of the warmest and friendliest communities I have ever encountered.” “I first become involved in 2014 at the invitation of the then Premier of Queensland, Campbell Newman,” she said. “This occurred because of my high profile in advocacy for rural and remote mental health, particularly in farming communities. “I was invited again in 2015, by Premier, The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk MP to participate in the 2016 Australia Day Ambassador program. “The Australia Day Ambassador Program gives focus to smaller, rural and remote communities - connecting Australians across city and country. It increases community spirit through the involvement of all Australians, regardless or origin and background, in Australia Day activities.” She said it was important to focus on the rural communities as they face major challenges, particularly in sustainability. “The downturn in the mining sector has had a huge impact on rural communities and I would like to see governments investing more in renewable energies to create new job opportunities in rural communities,” she said. “Agriculture has also taken a huge hit over the past decade particularly with the impact of drought, so we need to ensure everything possible is done to allow our farmers to do what they do best - farm!” Mayor Peter Blundell said Alison is a fitting ambassador for the area. “Council looks forward to being the host for Alison Fairleigh as our Ambassador for Australia Day this year,” Mayor Blundell said. “Her clear passion and advocacy for rural mental health and farming communities is an absolute credit to her. “The Southern Downs communities look forward to hearing more of her inspirational stories.” For more information concerning the Southern Downs Australia Day Celebrations contact Council on 1300 697 372 or visit www.sdrc.qld. gov.au.
SOS, the voice of ratepayers and residents of Southern Downs and the Granite Belt, has arranged meetings to give voters an opportunity to meet and question some of the councillor candidates who they are looking to support in the 19 March council elections. Meetings are being held across the entire council region at: Allora Commercial Hotel, Thursday 28 January; Wallangarra School of Arts, Tuesday 2 February; Dalveen Hall; Wednesday 3 February; Killarney Bowls Club; Tuesday 9 February; Stanthorpe RSL, Wednesday 10 February; Warwick RSL Flanders Room, Tuesday 16 February. The candidates are supported by SOS the Voice of Ratepayers and Residents of Southern Downs and Granite Belt. All candidates will have five minutes to speak and then there will be time for questions from the audience. All meetings will commence at 7pm and conclude at 8.30pm at the latest. Organiser Bob Johnson said they were prepared to talk to more candidates. Contact Mr Johnson 0432 950 645 or Aub Hanigan on 4661 9905.

A 35-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with various drug offences following a search of premises in Kerridges Road, Glen Aplin last week. Officer in Charge of Stanthorpe Police, Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland, said police located and seized 22 cannabis plants as well as a quantity of dried cannabis, smoking utensils and other evidence from the address. He said as a result the 35-year-old man was charged with producing dangerous drugs, possessing things used in the commission of a crime and possession of a utensil used for smoking dangerous drugs. The alleged offender was further charged with an additional two charges of producing dangerous drugs and possessing things used in the commission of a crime. Sen Sgt Ireland said these matters related to the discovery of a number of cannabis plants found growing on an adjoining property almost twelve months earlier at which time police seized the plants, a pump, battery and solar panels.
Police in road blitz ON the afternoon of Sunday 17 January, police from the Stanthorpe Road Policing Unit intercepted a vehicle being driven on New England Highway, Cottonvale, for the offence of speeding. A search of the vehicle located a quantity of cannabis with the 21-year-old male driver accepting drug diversion for the offence. The driver of another vehicle intercepted on New England Highway, Stanthorpe was later charged with drink driving after he blew .079% on the breathalyser. A 28-year-old man has received a $376 fine after being charged for doing burnouts outside a local hotel on Saturday night. The offender also had his number plates confiscated for 90 days. Meanwhile a 19-year-old woman was detained by police on Saturday night after creating a disturbance outside the Central Hotel at about 1.30am. She was later transported to a local address with other persons and issued an infringement notice for Public Nuisance.

he has achieved so far,” Ms Howard said. Brendan began his career in 2014 completing work experience in a local Warwick restaurant. Following a year as a school-based apprenticeship at the restaurant, he was keen to set his sights higher. After contacting Busy At Work, Brendan decided to send out several resumes to restaurants around Sydney, not really expecting a reply. “It was very exciting to see Brendan receive a positive response from three of the restaurants,” Ms Howard said. “After interviews and trials with the restaurants to gauge his passion in the kitchen, Brendan was offered an apprenticeship at two of the restaurants. “We are delighted by the news that Brendan has chosen to leave his hometown of Warwick and work at one of Australia’s finest restaurants. With the right training and mentoring we feel confident Brendan will have a great career ahead of him,” she said. Busy At Work CEO Paul Miles said it was pleasing to see Brendan succeed in his chosen career. “Brendan is just one of the many young people in country areas pursuing their dreams through completing an apprenticeship or traineeship. “Given his dedication and passion for his training, we know he will not only be a great asset to his employer but we look forward to seeing him achieve his goal of one day becoming a chef,” Mr Miles said.

His dream job MOVE over Jamie Oliver and Luke Mangan, here comes Brendan Austin. It seems helping his mum prepare family meals back home in Warwick is set to pay off in a big way for the first year cookery apprentice. Brendan is headed to Sydney for an apprenticeship at one of Australia’s best-known restaurants, owned by one of Australia’s best-known chefs - Neil Perry’s Rockpool Restaurant. The first year commercial cookery apprentice and former Warwick State High Student, Brendan has always been able to find his way around a kitchen. The 17-year-old has always had a passion for the food industry and is about to live out his dreams gaining employment in one of the country’s most acclaimed restaurants. The Rockpool group is owned and managed by celebrity chef Neil Perry, a highly respected Australian chef, restaurateur, author and television presenter. Brendan said his future was now looking good and he was thankful to the support he had received from his parents and Busy At Work industry training consultants. “My parents especially have played an important role in helping me get to where I am today,” he said. “I am also thankful to Donna Howard from Busy At Work for helping me focus on my goals and supporting me through my

Casey’s tips
No easy scoot
Waste is clear
IN RECENT months it has become necessary for me to use a mobility scooter to go shopping or make hospital/medical visits. I quickly became aware of how limited or difficult access could be to anywhere other than marked traffic crossings in the town or access along the creek in Stanthorpe. It is simply not possible, for instance, for me to cross the road from Corundum Street to Davadi Street to shop at IGA. My initial attempt resulted in the bottom of my scooter being unable to mount the pavement easily, when I tried it scraped the bottom of my vehicle and the wheels were simply not able to mount the opposing pavement. Thankfully, I have found a circuitous route that enables me to access my preferred shopping centre. When I visit the doctor or the hospital my best access is via Quart Pot Creek, which is very pleasant but even here on Station Street, I think, there is a rise that at least twice has been impossible to mount and I have been stuck, unable to go forward or backwards. Concerned motorists have stopped and helped me mount the pavement, otherwise I might still be there. A great deal of talk is circulating about beautifying the centre of the town which I understand involves removing all parking adjacent to the shopping centre and locating it on Rogers Street. Have you given any thought to what that means to disabled people? There is no longer any point in holding an invalid parking pass for one must hobble, unless in a wheelchair, from that place to the shopping centre. My understanding is that this may attract tourists to the area. Do you really think that simply shutting off the centre of the town to the people who live here is going to attract tourists? Why! And what about those of us who pay your exorbitant rates and reside here permanently? Do we count for nothing? Give some thought as to whom your future plans benefit, disabled or not. We are becoming a disgruntled community. You have served your interests and not those of us who have the power to remove you from office. Veronica Hammond, Stanthorpe.
DEAR Council, about your money worries, we can see waste! Like the Sherrin Rentals roller that has been parked at the Massey Hall for several weeks now. Are ratepayers still paying rent on it? If the job is done, why has the roller not been returned and ratepayers not paying rent on it? How many other rented machines are sitting idle and costing ratepayers? Council isn’t keeping up with their inventory of machinery and returning them. Also why do we have to buy new machines when past councils used theirs for years and workers knew how to use them? Why do we have so few grader drivers available to use the new graders, which should be going all the time? Why are so many rural roads not slashed and have high grass that hampers vision on corners and is a fire hazard? “Bring back the old shires”. June Jones, Upper Wheatvale.
Prepare Your Car For The Hot Summer
THERE seems to have been a sudden awakening of domestic violence problems in Australia of late. Such is the coverage in all forms of media, that there seems to be a reminder of a lost art for people to follow! Following on from the death of Alison BadenClay and the latest trial of her husband, or should I say review of the trial, domestic violence has seriously escalated. Women and babies seem to be at some risk. Domestic violence effects millions of women and all the media in the lands will not dent man’s ambition to control them. Sadly the Baden-Clay affair has undone any promise of permanent and unwavering belief in the judicial system to educate men and women also, to live for the children’s future. Domestic violence is also carried out from afar, seemingly to avoid being held accountable following verbal promises to do so, and constant damage to property is simply seen as a non-event! This writer grieves for all who are victims! Melba Morris, Allora.
Leave them alone SUGARLOAF Pine Tree Estate, as I call it, 15
Email your letter to: newsdesk@freetimes.com.au kilometres outside of Stanthorpe, made the news late last year. The SDR Council is determined to do ‘something’ about the illegal squatters that have had the temerity to build dwellings on their less than 20 hectare blocks. Council is concerned that the dwellings don’t meet building regulations, and may be a health hazard. Little sympathy is given to the fact that the dwellers don’t have any other place to go, and don’t have the finances to build fancy mansions elsewhere. It could be said that they are living in conditions not dissimilar to those experienced by our first pioneers. Perhaps their big crime is that they didn’t borrow loads of money from the bankers to finance their dwellings. It’s a shame the SDRC couldn’t do something positive for once, like changing the regulations to allow those people to remain where they are. The Sugarloaf folks would like nothing more than to be left alone. Are they causing harm to anyone? Are they criminals for wanting to live the way they do? Perhaps after the March election they will be treated differently; I think there will be many new faces on council after March. Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.
Debt examined IT HAS been reported that the State Government is to examine the local government council’s debt. The economic theory that it is OK to service the debt means in layman’s language, there is no need to pay off the debt or get out of debt, just as long as you can pay the financiers for eternity. Getting out of debt is prohibited. As one economist on the government payroll suggested the government tax home owners who have paid off their homes, to be charged the equivalent of rent on the market. The government of the day never rejected the proposal; it was just put on the shelf for a later date as an election was due. You ain’t seen nothing yet. They don’t want you to ever get out of debt. Debt leads to slavery, power and control. The debt structure is planned and deliberate. Those who engineer it are well-paid and protected for their efforts. C. Gaitskell, Stanthorpe.

‘Dead money’ debt is killing council CANDIDATE for the Southern Downs Regional Council election Marika McNichol has warned that the council’s huge debt is scheduled to get worse if action isn’t taken immediately. “Council currently carries more than $27 million debt on an operating budget of $66 million and has run an operating deficit for four of the past five years,” Marika said. “This means that every year, ratepayers pay around $2 million dollars in interest to banks - it’s dead money!” She said the Queensland Treasury Corporation recently confirmed how perilous the situation has become when it announced a Credit Risk Review of Southern Downs Regional Council. “Clearly they are not only worried about our current debt but also council proposals to increase our debt. Increased debt is just not on,” Marika said. “I’m hearing this from every resident and business person I listen to. Voters must make the message loud and clear.” Marika said she was encouraged that new Southern Downs Council CEO David Keenan seems keen to rectify the situation. “Mr Keenan’s recognition that the state of our finances is ‘dire’, as he put it, suggests he wants a sustainable solution,” she said. “I’m hoping electors will
Jenny and Keith prepare to start their own adventures.
Couple plan to de-camp Council candidate Marika McNichol talking with Warwick resident Leanne Bednarz and her daughter. vote in councillors who will give him the support he needs to implement a genuine debt reduction plan. “I will certainly support such a plan.” Marika said reducing debt requires responsible management and budgetary discipline. She advocates a review of council services in order to make them quicker, more effective and at a cost ratepayers can afford.
“We’ve seen numerous examples where council gets these things wrong,” she said. “They are closing smaller waste transfer stations and upgrading key ones. That sounds fine until you discover the new system will cost ratepayers more than the one they are replacing. “That’s the kind of madness we have to stop. “People from Allora to Wallangarra are telling me that.”
THE chances are that anyone on the Southern Downs who has needed camping gear over the past decade has visited Keith and Jenny Hartshorn at Mango Camping in Warwick. The family owned and operated business has become a bit of a landmark in town since it was first opened by Keith, Jenny and their daughter Elizabeth in 2005. However all this is about to change and after 10 and a half years of watching other people go on adventures the Hartshorns are about to take an adventure of their own. “We’ve decided not to renew the lease on the shop and,
instead, will take a break and start on some adventures of our own,” Keith said. “We want to say ‘thank you’ to people of Warwick, the Southern Downs and Border regions for the support they’ve given over the years.” Many people come in to see Keith and Jenny just to pass on details of wonderful trips and adventures they’ve had with equipment they bought from the store. However this week those stopping in have been telling the couple they’ll be missed and asking “where will we go now?” The couple said it was heart-
warming how many customers and friends had come in to say thanks and show their appreciation. But while the store will be gone the couple aren’t hanging up their tents and camping gear all together. Campers can still find them on Facebook at Camping Outlet or on their website campingoutlet.com.au. Mango Camping will honour outstanding gift vouchers and certificates and laybys via its website though shoppers are asked to make arrangements for laybys before the store closes. The last day of trading is Australia Day, 26 January.

Artists urged to step on up LOCALS will be the stars of the show at the 2016 Local Artist Exhibition held by the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery from 18 February to 3 April this year. Gallery director Nicola Holly is calling for artworks from local artists from Warwick to Tenterfield and everywhere in between. She said that Stanthorpe Art Gallery is keen to support local talent. “The purpose of this exhibition is to promote local artists to a whole new audience,” she said. Ms Holly said that between 3000 and 4000
people are expected through the doors of the gallery during the Apple and Grape Festival weekend alone and this will be of great benefit to local artists. “We want to highlight the best artwork of our region,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if you feel like your work isn’t good enough or you’ve never exhibited before, what’s important is that you take the chance and submit an artwork. ” Cost of entry is $5 per work with a maximum of three entries per artist.
Ms Holly said that anyone with questions or queries about the event could contact her on gallerydirector@srag.org.au or phone (07) 4681 1874. “I’m here to help artists and their professional careers and, hopefully, we can have a very successful exhibition for the visitors and community.” Entries close on 14 February and the cost of exhibiting a work is $5. Entry forms are available at www.srag.org.au or from the front desk. Artworks must be for sale.
The Stanthorpe Gallery exhibition aims to promote local artists to a new audience.

Listen closely to a financial advisor, especially if considering a change in direction. Lleyton good to the last The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
By CASEY O’CONNOR LIKE most Australians I sat transfixed on Tuesday night willing Lleyton Hewitt a first round win in his 20th and final appearance at the Australian Open. Of course he did not need my help as he disposed of fellow Australian James Duckworth in straight sets after a tough opening set. Seldom, if ever, has a player ranked number 308 received so much attention or drawn such a great crowd, In an emotion-charged game Hewitt had to overcome the up-and-coming Australian player who he will most likely work with later this year in his new capacity as Australia’s Davis Cup captain. A veritable who’s who of Australian tennis was courtside for the game. Hewitt’s past four Davis Cup captains - John Newcombe, John Fitzgerald, Pat Rafter and Wally Masur - were all on hand at Rod Laver Arena. There was plenty of support from sporting greats. Michael Clarke and Adam Gilchrist, gold medallist Michael Klim, former Formula One driver Mark Webber, Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne watched from the President’s Box. Hewitt, who was last a finalist in the tournament in 2005 will meet eighth seed David Ferrer in what is sure to be a tough second round for the popular Aussie. I am sure like me all Australians will be hoping the fairy-tale continues and it is not the last we hear of that famous war cry “Come On”. - Casey YMCA OPENING DOORS THE Stanthorpe YMCA is holding an open day on Australia Day (Tuesday 26 January) from 1pm-3pm to promote their programs. There will be a free jumping castle set up inside the YMCA along with free face-painting and free sausage sizzle. In addition one lucky visitor will win a three-month gym and class membership. To be eligible you only need to attend the open day. “We are inviting the local community to come along and join in the classes and try some of our programs,” Stanthorpe YMCA president Steve Tremellen said. “This is an great opportunity for parents to sample a variety of our programs from spin bikes to Punchfit and Tai Chi, while the kids can have a shot at the basketball net, try and score a futsal goal or learn about boxing, martial arts, physical culture or skipping,” Mr Tremellen said. “Classes will only run for 20 minutes with time allocated to speak to the instructors afterwards. We encourage visitors to dress appropriately and join in”. Outside school hours care staff will also be on hand to discuss child care needs for the upcoming school year and information on all sports programs and associated costs will be available. Exercise physiologists, a dietitian and personal trainers will also be on hand in the gym to discuss any health and fitness issues including managing diabetes, sore joints, weight loss or general health and fitness inquiries. All information will be provided “free of charge”. Following is the timetable of activities. Cricket Area: Martial arts - noon to 12.25pm. Free jumping castle - noon to 2pm. Boxing 12.30pm to 12.55pm. Hard court activities: Spin - 12.30pm to 12.40pm. Physical culture - noon to 12.25pm. Spin - 12.45 to 12.55pm. Skipping - 12.30pm to 12.55pm. Spin - 1.05pm to 1.15pm. TONKIN TAKES CUP GRAHAM Tonkin closed out all contenders in the final round of the Foundation Cup played last Saturday at the Stanthorpe Golf Course. Tonkin returned a score of 84 off the stick to win the cup and the lowest round of the day saw him walk away with the prizes, sponsored by David Townsend. Stephen Kay took out second place with a good round of 79 gross with nett 69. All scores down to nett 71 featured in the rundown. Luke Reardon held the pin shot at 3/12 and the pro-pin at 1/10, Matt Waterworth collected the pin at 17 and the remaining pro-pins went to Fred Wharton at 5/14 and Rob Reeves at 9/18. The ladies' event was won by Rachael Hendry with nett 76 with Linda Kelly picked up the runners-up prize with a score of nett 79 and the best approach shot at the 17th. Nikki Rossow won a ball in the rundown with nett 80, helped by a birdie at 9/18. This Saturday, the club will be holding its Australia Day celebration with a two-ball am-
brose the featured event, sponsored by Tom Page. It is a shotgun start with registration by 11.30am and hit-off from 11.45am. There is a timesheet on the board at the clubhouse. STANTHORPE INTO FINALS THE Stanthorpe Davis Shield side is finals bound after securing a win in Sunday’s Rep game against Toowoomba Downlands College. Downlands never came to terms with the C.F. White wicket as Stanthorpe took early wickets. The visitors were all out for 125 in only the 35th over after a dominant performance by the Stanthorpe bowling attack. Tom Garland finished with 3/20 and Curtis Allen 2/11 but all bowlers contributed. Chasing 126 to win, Stanthorpe scored a comfortable win in the 29th over. Tom Cameron led the way top scoring with a fine 46. PURCEL GETS THE NOD THE Wallangarra Golf Club held a single stableford event last Saturday. Jamie Purcel and Damien Moore finished their rounds tied on 41 points. After a countback Purcel got the winning nod. Stephen Hampstead also had a good round finishing just one point behind the leaders to finish in third spot. Pin shots went to Moore on 9 and 15, Hampstead at 11 and Purcel on the second approach. Purcel also won the jackpot on hole four. This week the club has scheduled a single
stroke event. A reminder that club membership fees are due by the end of January. Follow all the Wallangarra Golf Club events on the club’s Facebook page. BACK ON THE GREEN CROQUET players returned to the greens last week. There was only a small turnout for the first association croquet games of 2016. Players enjoyed good conditions and the green was in great condition for the first game of the New Year. Joy Newman scored the maximum 26 points in her match against Val Richardson (16). In the doubles match Carol Verwey and Grace Howard played well to defeat Andrea Denkewitz and Heather Widderick, 17-12. In this game Grace Howard had the best break of the round with three consecutive hoops. There were still some players enjoying a holiday break when players took to the green for Hoop Runners Golf Croquet. In the game, one the triples team of Judy Locke, Shirley Evans and Liz Ellway defeated Elaine Brown, Shirley Page and Di Wren 137. Locke and Evans top scored with five hoops apiece and two players managed jump shots. Because of the very hot conditions the second game was shorter. Judy Locke, Shirley Page and Dianne Wren were in the winners circle proving too strong for Elaine Brown Liz Ellway and Shirley Evans - the score 8-5. Ellway top scored in this game with four hoops and there was a hole in one. Anyone interested in having a look at or trying Hoop Runners Golf Croquet please contact Elaine Brown on 0401 630 272 for information or join the players at the croquet green on Wednesday mornings. We are looking forward to next week when we hope to have extra players. Anybody interested in joining us can turn up at the court at 8.30am on any Wednesday morning, or contact Elaine on 0401 630 272 for information. The Gateball players returned from their break on Friday. Although numbers were down John Draper was in great form. Les Williams and Grace Howard were also very consistent. Judy Locke who is more at home with Golf Croquet joined the Gateballers and I am told with a few more games under her belt she have a handle on the tactics of this form of the game. A reminder to all croquet players that the Annual General Meeting will be on Wednesday 10 February, at 11 am. Those interested in nominating for vacant positions are invited to do so as soon as possible.

Business to be conducted at the meeting includes consideration of two Special Resolutions: firstly, that the Ballandean Soccer Club adopts proposed new rules as the rules of the association; secondly that Ballandean Soccer Club changes its name to Ballandean Football Club Inc. and that the secretary be authorised to register this change with the Queensland Office of Fair Trading. Vacant positions include president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, vice-treasurer, registrar, coaching director, canteen co-ordinators, volunteer co-ordinator, media manager, risk assessment officer. For your convenience, nomination forms are available on the club website www.ballandeanfc. com and further information is available from club president Neil Newman. SENIOR GILCHRIST IN WOODENBONG STAN Gilchrist, father of former Australian wicket keeper and chairman of the National Australia Day Council Adam Gilchrist, will be one of a number of cricket luminaries joining the Lew Cooper City XI for the annual fund-raising Australia Day cricket bash in Woodenbong this year. Gilchrist senior is the chairman of the Northern NSW Lord’s Taverners. Prior to the game, which will get underway at 1.30pm, following the official Australia Day celebrations experienced cricket coaches will be on hand to conduct a special cricket coaching clinic on Woodenbong’s Main Oval for school children. The coaching clinic is expected to run from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. This annual event between city and country has become a fixture on the Woodenbong calendar and unfortunately I am a reluctant scratching this year due to Rotary commitments. MIXED BAG ON THE RANGE IT was a mixed bag of action at the Inglewood Shooting range last weekend with a pistol competition and Benchrest shooting. Pistol was a timed Action Pistol event with late arrival Tom Donald cleaning up the opponents. Tom Donald won by 1.3 seconds. Newcomer Jason Lewis required little coaching from Peter Solomon - he finished in second spot ahead of Iain Bowen. Bit of a bang at the benches by the Dudgeons and their black powder rifles but no competition was held. RUGBY LEAGUE SEASON KNOCKING THE 2016 Rugby League season is knocking at the door and Border Rugby League clubs are already gearing up. The 2015 premiers, the Stanthorpe Gremlins are holding their sign-on day on Saturday 23 January, between 2pm and 4pm,
'65/'66 reaching the semi-finals. Elms thrived on big waves and earned a reputation as a fearless board rider often tackling waves twice his height. In 1966 he took the opportunity to move to North Shore Hawaii and ride the Big Surf blazing a trail for generations of surfers. While in Waimea he met Jose Angel a fellow big wave rider and a deep sea diver who introduced him to diving for the lucrative black coral “the diamonds of the sea” worth thousands. When Elms returned home from Hawaii he began diving off the Gold and Tweed Coast. While out to sea in his high powered diving boat he would tow in to huge swells breaking off Fido and Five Mile Reef surfing the Tweed bommies on water skis. Way ahead of the times. A carpenter by trade, Elms was renowned for designing and making his own boards. Gold Coast surfing personality Andrew McKinnon said: “He was a surfer’s surfer, called it how it was and was hands on with everything he did”. Trevor Elms had a profound influence on the history of surfing in Australia especially on the Gold Coast and his home Kirra however he never sought the limelight for his achievements, “He did it all for his own pleasure!” He is survived by wife Carmel, daughters Belinda and Amanda, and his four grandchildren. CRICKET FIXTURES DEFY CONDITIONS DESPITE heavy rain Friday and threatening conditions on Saturday the Stanthorpe Cricket Association got through their Twenty20 round of fixtures. On Sheahan Oval, Souths and Valleys went head to head in a crucial game. Valleys had first use of the wicket scoring a reasonable total of 134. David Gavin showed all of his class and experience top scoring with 70 not out in a standout performance. Souths captain Ben Staley took
2/16 from his four overs. Souths were under early pressure after the loss of a wicket but regrouped. Ben Staley (56) and Jordan Lanza (65) guided Souths to a comfortable win with a couple of overs to spare. The win means the battle for second position is well and truly on. On the C.F. White Oval, RSL extended their lead at the top of the ladder with a convincing win over Tenterfield. The front runner all season, RSL fielded an almost full strength side setting Tenterfield a target of 144. Duane Lihou top scored with 60 for RSL. Tenterfield in reply lost only four wickets but was not able to get near the required run rate and at the end of the 20 overs had scored only 85 runs. This weekend the Stanthorpe Cricket Association will hold their popular Super 8’s carnival. The emphasis will be fixed firmly on having fun. Games commence at 12.30pm. A WIN AND A LOSS THE Warwick Rep cricket sides picked up a win and a loss last weekend in the Mitchell and Davis Shield competitions. The Warwick Bulls Davis Shield team defeated Lockyer but the Mitchell Shield side found their opponents too good on the day. In the Davis Shield game, Warwick batted first scoring a good total of 257 from 49 overs. Kev Poole led the charge scoring a solid 70. He was well backed by Ryan Collins (31), Aaron Veitheer (25) and Keiren Bourke (19). Lockyer was dismissed for 190. Kevin Bourke was good with the ball taking five wickets from his 10-over spell. Keiren Bourke picked up 2/19 from 7.3 overs. Keeper Aaron Veitheer had a good day behind the stumps taking three catches and two stumpings. Warwick picked up six points from the game but a finals appearance will be determined by other results In the Mitchell Shield game, Lockyer proved too strong. Warwick batted first on a damp wicket and looked solid at the first break with the score 1/52 and then 2/87 but collapsed to be all out for 137. Lachlan Gross top scored for the Bulls. In an impressive innings his 65 included two sixes and six fours. In reply, Lockyer lost only three wickets as it chased down the required total of 138. Scott McLennan was the best of the Warwick bowlers taking 2/27 in his 10-over spell. Despite the loss it has been a good season for a young side in the rebuilding phase. Congratulations to Jason Steketee who took on the captaincy of the young side this season.

If you are interested please contact the club president by email at cowboyspresident@ hotmail.com SURFING LOSES PIONEER ONE of the most influential figures in Australian surfing recently passed away on the Gold Coast. Many outside surfing ranks knew little of Trevor Elms however he was a hugely influential yet largely unsung pioneer of the sport in this country. Since his death a little over two weeks ago tributes have flooded in for this no-fuss sportsman. Known by many as the original Waterman, Elms won the first Queensland surfing competition in the summer of 1963/'64. The contest was held at Greenmount but was later shifted to Kirra due to big surf. In 1965 he qualified for the Australian titles held at Bondi won by Midget Farrelly, and competed in the prestigious Makaha International in Hawaii in
