We won’t share By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S the battle between Cranbourne home owners and the State Government that could change the way share houses are developed across Victoria. Hundreds of Brookland Greens residents with the backing of Casey Council are locked in a fight with the State Government as they push to change laws surrounding share house provisions. More than 340 Casey residents met at the Cranbourne Turf Club to hear from council officers, Cr Geoff Ablett and Shadow Minister for Planning David Davis on Monday 25 January. The site in question at 5 Concord Place, Cranbourne has been subject to several protests and two petitions to stop a proposed development of two 10-place share houses. Locals have labelled the current lack of council involvement in the establishment of share houses as an “absurd situation”. As it stands, State Government laws allow share housing to go ahead without prior council planning approval or consultations with neighbours. The agitated crowd pushed the powerless Casey council officers for answers throughout the one-hour meeting with hopes the State Government will answer their calls in the coming weeks. Director of Planning and Development at City of Casey, Peter Fitchett told the crowd “the devil is in the detail.”
Mr Fitchett explained to the audience that the only way to truly win the fight is if the law is formerly gazetted to include the council’s right to consider planning as well as what the development will be used for. “And we’ve written to the State Government about this,” Mr Fitchett said. Shadow Minister for Planning David Davis admitted that there was a “loophole” in the law, saying the State Government had stated in recent days that a change was imminent. But for one Cranbourne resident, the amendments will come much too late. Wishing to remain anonymous, a resident of Houghton Drive Cranbourne came forward on the night and expressed how she and her neighbours lived in angst, next door to a share house. “There’s plenty of drug overdoses there, stabbings, consistent drug dealing and fights,” she said. “We hear the yelling, swearing and carrying on and one night we woke up to find the fence had been pulled down during an argument – the gate had been thrown into the middle of road.” “It was a nice quiet area to retire in and we don’t want to go looking for something else – we have thought about moving, but then you think why should we?”
Our rays of sunshine IT was a day to celebrate and appreciate all of the colourful cultures that make up Australia. And Cranbourne’s Oz Day event took on a life of its own with a myriad of artistic performances. One mother-daughter couple, Joviale Clarke and Florence Shinanduku, were a beam of joy. Three dogs killed in sneak snake strikes SNAKES have killed three dogs and put an elderly Cranbourne resident in hospital during a series of attacks in Cranbourne. A tiger snake latched onto Barbara McDougall’s leg when she went to put her bin out on Wednesday 13 January. “I knew they’d be around but it still gave me the fright of my life,” the Dalray Court resident told Star News. “It didn’t just bite and go. “As I moved the bin out it jumped at me and I didn’t want to touch it. “I tried to shake it off but it wouldn’t let go.” After what “seemed like a long time” the snake let go and Ms McDougall was taken to her GP before being rushed to Dandenong Hospital by a neighbour who heard her calls for help. Ms McDougall has fully recovered from the bite but said her entire court of eight houses is on high alert. “I have lived here 39 years and

I’ve seen a few snakes in that time but never heard of anything like this,” she said of the series of attacks. Dalray Court, which backs onto bushland adjacent to Cranbourne
racecourse, is also near the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens. And neighbour Shane Burton, who lost his Jack Russell to a tiger snake in December, said he’d like to see the bush land cleaned up to pre-
vent more dogs from being killed. “I think the snakes are looking for water but the botanic gardens is going to become a real problem in a few years’ time because there’s a lot of snakes breeding in there,” he said. Mr Burton has warned his neighbours to watch where they’re walking and to tidy up their yards. “Over nine years we’ve had four snakes at our home – it seemed to be a lot this time,” he said. Mr Burton’s dog Zeppi died from a snake bite within six hours, putting a dampener on Christmas and scaring his two other dogs. “I have made some changes to the backyard to prevent snakes getting in but my dogs now wait for me to go outside. Before they used to be out there all the time,” he said. And Mr Burton’s next door neighbour’s dogs, a Jack Russell and Staffordshire bull terrier also recently died from snake bites. “It’s affecting everyone in the court,” he said.
We won’t Snakes live here too: catcher By GEORGIA WESTGARTH
From front page Since moving into her home 14 years ago, the adjacent rental turned into a share house and she said “people come and go all the time”, leaving neighbours fearing for their safety. “I know my house won’t get what it’s worth because of the share house opposite and I can understand how the Brookland Greens residents are feeling, because I’m living with it,” she said. “There are tyres on the front lawn, broken bits of fence and no-one wants to live next to that – I try and keep a nice home.” More petition signatures were gathered on the night of the meeting and Cr Ablett promised locals he would continue to put pressure on Cranbourne MP Jude Perera as well as other state MPs. Under law, construction at the Concord Place development cannot be halted, despite a big local push to do so.
SNAKE Catchers Victoria’s Barry Goldsmith has hit out at claims there is a “snake plague” in Cranbourne after three dogs were killed by snake bites and an elderly woman was bitten by a tiger snake. The incidents all occurred in Dalray Court, Cranbourne, and Mr Goldsmith said it’s humans who are encroaching on what was once snake territory. “There’s a lot of bushland around Cranbourne and there’s not many places for the snakes to go,” he said. “They’re out of space and every time we put up housing or industrial estates or a freeway they have even fewer places to live and are forced to enter people’s properties.” Mr Goldsmith catches snakes throughout the south-east and said this season has been “no different” to any other snake season. “There are fewer snakes now than there ever was but they have fewer places to live. “Over this season I’ve removed 70 snakes from people’s properties in the south-east, which is not unusual,” he said. “It’s all about teaching people how to live with snakes and teaching them to respect the wildlife around us.

A TEENAGER from Narre Warren North was clocked travelling at more than double the speed limit in Wandin North over the weekend. It is alleged Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol members nabbed the P-plate driver travelling at 125/km/h in a 60/km/h zone. Police intercepted the Nissan Patrol and spoke to the 19-year-old driver about 6.55pm on Sunday 24 January. His car was impounded, and he is facing $997 in towing and storage costs and is expected to be charged on summons for speeding offences.
Robberies linked? POLICE are investigating whether an armed robbery in Clayton South this week is linked to another armed robbery at a Hampton Park fast food store the night before. The first armed robbery occurred at the fast food outlet on the South Gippsland Highway in Hampton Park about 1.15am on 25 January. Almost 24 hours later, just before midnight on the same day, two balaclava-clad men walked into a Clayton South bottle-shop armed with a machete and an axe and demanded money from the attendant. After taking an amount of cash and bottles of alcohol the two men fled the Centre Road store on foot, running along the street and then down Melaleuca Drive. No employees were injured in the incident.
Laptop gets lifted A CRANBOURNE resident had a laptop stolen after they left their back door unlocked. Narre Warren police believe the burglary occurred between 6am and 7.15am on Tuesday 19 January. The laptop worth $1200 was stolen from the lounge room of the Mariner Close property in Cranbourne North. Detective Senior Sergeant Rodney Maroney said the offenders walked the length of the home until coming across the laptop.
CHEAPEST FLOORING/DECKING “They won’t bite unless they are startled or touched. “The only time the dogs get bitten is when they attack the snakes. “Venom is used by snakes on prey not for self-defence – it’s illegal to kill snakes and a lot of people get bitten when they try to kill them,” he added. Senior investigator at Animal Cruelty Hotline Australia and Casey resident Barrie Tapp agreed there was no plague in Cranbourne. “I don’t think it’s a plague, just more bites are being reported,” Mr Tapp said. “City people are coming out into rural country areas and there are

snakes there and they have got to realise that you have to learn to live with them, just like possums.” Mr Goldsmith said even though his phone has been running hot with calls for help, “I know for a fact it’s not a snake plague, it’s just more people coming into contact with snakes. “Every time grass gets high more rodents come out and they go to houses to find food and the snakes follow them,” he said. Mr Goldsmith advises people to wear long pants if entering areas where there may be snakes to prevent a bad bite and slowly stepping away from a snake if one is nearby.

Cliff and his daughter Candace Matthews have been regulars at the Hampton Park Australia Day festival since they arrived in Australia nine years ago. 149372 Right: It was all about the jam and cream scones for Paige, 3, and Kahyla, 7, on Australia Day. 149372 Advance Australia Fair, I’d prefer it, because we are all from different countries,” he said. Enjoying the cultural display of dance and song at the annual Australia Day event, Cliff said it was truly “amazing” how many different nationalities made up the Land Down Under. “Today is a great time to appreciate different cultures,” he said. And with an indigenous Maori performance and the City of Casey’s Pipe Band delighting audiences, Hampton Park was the right place to spend it.

CLIFF Matthews says it how it is. “Australia is the best country in the world”, and he knows that off by heart. Arriving in Australia from India nine years ago, Cliff has since made a life for himself and his family of four in Hampton Park. And he has been attending the Hampton Park Progress Association ‘Day of Nations’ Australia Day carnival every year since he got here. “I am proud to be Australian,” Cliff said and he’s proud to feel it too. “When you come to Australia you are Australian,” he said. “You leave all your differences behind and baggage and you can come here and start new.” And with Australia Day being a time to reflect and appreciate life on Aussie shores, Cliff said there’s only one way to truly do that. “You have to leave Australia to know what you are missing,” he said. “I’ve got friends and family all around the world and I know that you have to leave Australia to value it.” With much chatter surrounding the wording of the National Anthem, Cliff said he hoped to see the Seekers ‘I am Australian’ reach worldwide audiences. “I think it should replace

CRANBOURNE’S Australia Day showcase showed its soft side this year with an underlying message of motivation. Australia Day Ambassador for Cranbourne Dr Christine Durham spoke candidly about her own life struggles, adding an inspirational theme to the annual Australia Day celebrations. After almost losing her life in a car accident, author and former school teacher, Dr Durham officially opened the Balla Balla centre’s Cultural Heritage Oz Day Showcase. Dr Durham told audiences of her discoveries in life and how she truly believes “pigs can fly, since sustaining an acquired brain injury. “The impossible can be possible, she said, adding that Australia Day was the perfect time to reflect on what binds everyone together and about believing in one’s self. This was Dr Durham’s second year as an Australia Day Council Ambassador and one she won’t forget. “Since coming here today to Hampton Park I have learnt so much, she said, after reading the Mauritian heritage display. A carnival of red, white and blue, the Cranbourne event showed a diverse range of multicultural singers, dancers and speakers and included a free snag and animal farm too. “To see how people celebrate is quite heart-warming and to see all the different flavours of Australia out here today, Dr Durham said.

Blessings of Christianity
HEAD OFFICE:
JOHN Glazebrook (Misplaced Faith, News, 21 January) doesn’t understand the vital difference between religion and Christianity. Religion is man-made effort to earn the right to enter Heaven. But Christianity, as the Bible teaches, is the vital factor which has made our country so great in areas like freedom, prosperity, health care, and much more, and to prepare the human race for eternity. When anti-Christian people started ignoring the Bible, crime and evil became worse. If we put the teaching of the Bible by Christian teachers back into our schools as a top priority, we would soon begin to see a dramatic drop in crime and many other evils in our community and to enjoy the many blessings we once knew. With reference to the letter in the Cranbourne News (Need For Bunjil, News, 2 July 2015). We refute the statements of the then Mayor Mick Morland. 1. This precinct is an unwanted structure which is being forced on the community without proper funding (only $10 million funded by the Federal Government) without taking into account of where the balance of $115 million will come from? An email received from the Manager Legal Services (Rob Pedder) has stated that under the Local Government Act the council can undertake borrowings to fund its operations or capital works. This funding will eventually fall on ratepayers in future years. Note: An email to the mayor on 16 June 16 asking why was an amount of $35,774,000 for Bunjil Place being budgeted in the Draft Budget? Email from Rob Pedder (Manager Legal Sevices) has said that the estimated construction expenditure is $25.5 million. Why? This is added in the budget and to the rates. All ratepayers are not aware of this being slyly added to the budget for 2015-2016.The ex-mayor, Geoff Ablett has clearly indicated that the cost of this building will not result in rate increases. This is misuse of ratepayers money. 2. Statistics show that the City of Casey has a population of 288,000 and as the mayor (Mick Morland) has said that the council had engaged an independent research firm which conducted a telephone survey of 300 people as well as an analysis of 200 online responses of residents (not all living) in Casey. Eighty two per cent of respondents agreed for a need for a cultural and community precinct in south-east Melbourne. This is a blatant stupidity on the part of council to go ahead with this project with just 82 per cent of the 500 people when Casey has a population of 288,000. When we asked for proof of this survey council was not able to comply. 3. There are three council offices and many libraries operating, surely there is no need for such an extravagant building to be constructed to house new offices and a library. It is a waste of ratepayers' monies. 4. Late last year we had asked the council what the running cost of this precinct. There was no response. Dunstan Girton and Louis Kotsiras, Hampton Park.

CATHY Wieckmann has been named this year’s Casey Citizen of the Year. Cathy and a number of other local residents were honoured at the annual Casey Australia Day Awards ceremony held on Tuesday night at the council chambers. Cathy is the co-founder of Christians Helping in Primary Schools (CHIPS), which now has more than 500 volunteers across 34 Casey schools. She also started up the Life Gets Better camps and Leadon program, which encourages young people to be active members of their local community. In addition Cathy manages the CHIPS Chaplaincy Program, now in 17 schools, and liaises with 14 chaplains and many mentors and volunteers.
Outside of CHIPS, she also supports various charities including the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Thailand’s Zoe Orphanage Foundation. Also recognised on the night were this year’s Casey Young Citizen of the Year Oliver Thomson, the Casey Senior Citizen of the Year Rick Beeby, the Casey Sportsperson of the Year Chandlar Felton, and the Casey Non-resident of Year Brianna Loves. Meanwhile the Casey Community Event of the Year accolades were given to the Halloween Spooktacular Party and the Doveton Show. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz lauded the award recipients for their outstanding commitment to “civic life”. “Many of you are actively involved in providing the opportunities that allow us all

Federal MP Anthony Byrne, centre, and the Holt Australia Day Award winners.
Award spirit By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THERE were 33 individuals and seven local organisations recognised at this week’s annual Holt Australia Day Awards. The awards, presented by Holt MP Anthony Byrne, were held at the Arthur Wren Hall in Hampton Park and were handed out to a range of communitydriven and selfless local people. People like Nicole Ryan were recognised for being the mastermind behind the NarreCranbourne Relay for Life. Star News spoke to Nicole in November as she made the decision to stand down as chairwoman, having started up the relay about 12 years ago after her father, Clive, was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Looking to begin her own cancer fund-raiser Nicole set the wheels in motion to run her own event, and by 2012 the
Narre-Cranbourne Relay for Life had begun with Nicole, her sister and her dad making up the three-person committee. After four years and now with 15 people on the committee, the project has raised more than $300,000. Afghan-born Shabnam Safa, 21, was also recognised at the awards following her migration to Australia in 2009. In 2014 Shabnam, who was previously the Australia Study Tour recipient and the 2012 Casey Youth Ambassador, founded the Noor Foundation, which aims to help migrants and refugees to feel at home in Australia. Through the Yana Program, which the foundation runs, volunteers tutor new migrants to help them pass their citizenship test. The Young Veterans RSL were also awarded at the event,
a group which was started by three veterans who felt there was a lack of social welfare groups for ex-serving defence members across the country. The Young Veterans got involved with as many RSL groups as possible, including Dandenong, and set about visiting schools, conducting presentations and raising contemporary veteran issues. Mr Byrne praised all the award recipients. “I congratulate all those receiving a Holt Australia Day Award for their exemplary community spirit and endless hours of volunteer work making our community a better and safer place to live,” he said. “These people do not get the same accolades as celebrities in the media but in their own quiet Australian way they do tremendous work and make other people’s lives better.”

Fiery start for a rookie By LACHLAN MOORHEAD “IT WAS one hell of a shotgun start.” Literally, it was like walking into hell. It was Matt Staple’s first day on the job as a staff firefighter at the Hallam CFA. He’d been there just five minutes before he was called out to a fully-involved house fire in Doveton. The 24-year-old went inside the burning wreck with his leading firefighter. Inside the building the temperature reached 500 degrees. “You can’t really top a house fire on your first day,” Matt said with a smile. “It’s one of those stories they tell everyone on recruits. Be prepared to get going from the very second you get on the station - so that’s what I did. “The construction of it really insulated it well. It was a pretty hot one. You just focus; I wasn’t freaking out or anything. “You just get in there and think about it later.” Matt may seem young for this line
of work but he’s worked more than a little hard to gain the opportunity. Despite a few knock-backs by the CFA as he tried to become an employed member, Matt signed up as a volunteer down in the Latrobe Valley where he honed his craft, before applying again. “They really want to see perseverance,” Matt said. “There weren’t too many in my age group so they just want to make sure you’re the right person. “You could always just say there were people that were better than you at the time. “I didn’t take it too hard. I just got back on the horse and pushed through and got there in the end.” Matt said most people who apply for the job had dreamed of being a firefighter, and he’s no different. “You work so hard for it,” he said. “And you finally get here and it’s like, this is awesome. So you throw everything at it, which can sometimes be a little bit too much, but that’s alright. “The learning curve doesn’t stop
from there, it keeps going, which has been fantastic. “You just keep working, it doesn’t stop.” One of the men he worked with in the Latrobe Valley was Brendan McKay - formerly of the Morwell CFA, now also at Hallam - who is more than a bit of mentor to Matt. “Each brigade’s got its own significant risks,” Brendan said. “Down in the Latrobe Valley the main aim of integrated stations is probably due to the power industry and protecting that asset down there. That’s the main reason we’re down there. “Up here (Hallam) we’re on the fringe of urban Melbourne and it’s just the call rate that forces permanent staff to be here. “The multitude of calls, the hours the calls are at, it’s a really big drain on the volunteer force and I’d argue, others might argue differently, but I’d argue that it’s pretty hard for them to keep up with it.” The Hallam CFA receives 1800 to
Matt Staple, 24, is the latest rookie at the Hallam CFA - and he's loving every minute of it. 148919 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS 2000 calls a year, around three times what Morwell was receiving, Brendan said. The Emergency Medical Response (EMR) program has also added to the call rate, with CFA firefighters now called out for medical support and re-
quired to administer CPR if they arrive before paramedics. “This job is about bettering yourself over the whole journey,” Brendan said. “Even guys that have been here for 30 years, they’re learning something every shift.”

Extra effort needed IN LINDEN Barry’s eyes the world would be a better place if everyone just tried “5 per cent more”. A humble, Narre Warren father of two, Linden, has spent more time in the supermarket this month than he has done in 15 years. And it was a newspaper article on struggling drought stricken farmers in northern Victoria that lead him to the shops. “I just read it and thought that’s no good and came out the
next day and thought buggar it I better do something to help them,” said Linden, owner of Cardboard Cartons in Dandenong. “Sometimes you just got to try a bit harder, and once you get outside of Melbourne you see how dry it is,” he said. So he and his 18-year-old son Lachlan piled 16 trolleys worth of toiletries and groceries into a van and drove the seven hours to Dingee and back earlier this month. “We did it all in one day,” Linden said.
The items were donated to East Loddon Community Centre president Leanne Welsh, who started a food bank for 30 farming families under financial strain. And since the delivery Linden and Lachlan have returned to help Dingee volunteers package his generous donation which took him three hours to buy. “Lachie, I and half a dozen ladies packed up the food ready to be distributed by the Salvos outreach,” Linden said. Both Narre Warren North
CFA fire fighters Linden and Lachlan have vowed they will do it all again. “The delivery came to 70 parcels for families most in need and you don’t have to have a link to the area to be able to help someone,” Linden said. “We don’t have any ties in Dingee but give us two months and we will do another load.” Originally Linden wasn’t keen to have his donation made public but has since changed his mind, in the hope that his efforts will remind others that they, too, can put in an extra 5 per cent.
Linden and Lachlan Barry are set to make another seven hour trip to Dingee with another load of groceries in the Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS coming months. 149198

Cranbourne is crowded By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM
Federal MP Anthony Byrne, centre, and the Holt Australia Day Award winners.
Spirit of awards By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THERE were 33 individuals and seven local organisations recognised at this week’s annual Holt Australia Day Awards. The awards, presented by Holt MP Anthony Byrne, were held at the Arthur Wren Hall in Hampton Park and were handed out to a range of community-driven and selfless local people. Looking to begin her own cancer fundraiser Nicole set the wheels in motion to run
her own event, and by 2012 the Narre-Cranbourne Relay for Life had begun with Nicole, her sister and her dad making up the threeperson committee. The Young Veterans RSL were also
awarded at the event, a group which was started by three veterans who felt there was a lack of social welfare groups for ex-serving defence members across the country.
COMMUTERS on the Cranbourne line are subjected to some of the worst overcrowding on the network, with trains in the morning peak carrying over 400 passengers above their capacity. Data released by The Victorian Greens to Pakenham News this week reveals the results of a four-day survey conducted in May, tallying the number of passengers on each train in the morning peak hour. Average loading across the Pakenham, Dandenong and Cranbourne lines was 855 passengers - 57 more than the 798 that Metro trains are designed to carry. The highest recorded count on the Cranbourne line was 1219 passengers crammed into the 8.24am service from Cranbourne on the third day. The situation is worsening on the three lines, with the services gaining an extra 4454 passengers between the 2014 and 2015 surveys and adding just one extra service to meet demand. The data also revealed the added pressure that cancellations put on existing services. On the third day of the survey, both the 8.10 from Cranbourne and the 8.20 from Pakenham were cancelled, pushing 10 of the 13 remaining services over capacity. Passenger numbers are
calculated at Caulfield station, where the Dandenong, Pakenham and Cranbourne lines adjoin with the Frankston line. Member for Gembrook Brad Battin said on Wednesday morning that more must be done to accommodate commuters in the growth corridor. “Daniel Andrew ripped up the $30 million contract for the $2.5 billion upgrade of the Pakenham-Cranbourne Railway Line but has failed to offer any alternative solution for commuters,” he said. “It is blatantly clear that the South-East is growing and we desperately need investment in infrastructure to serve our growing population.” Despite the planned removal of 14 crossings on the Pakenham-Cranbourne line, Mr Battin said more needed to be done. “Daniel Andrews needs to stop ignoring the Southeast and fund a major upgrade of the Pakenham-Cranbourne railway line before this overcrowding becomes even worse.” Services included in the survey were the 7.59am, 8.06am, 8.20am, 8.27am, 8.36am and 8.50am from Pakenham; the 8.03am, 8.18am and 8.32am from Dandenong, the 8.10am, 8.24am, 8.43am and 8.56am from Cranbourne; and the 8.45 and 8.58am from Westall.

THE Tulliallan estate at Cranbourne North is underway with the first residents already starting to become part of this new community. The first residents Chethiya and Udeshika Dissanayake were presented with a cheque for $5000 by Tulliallan land owner and developer Peter White who generously offered the one-off gift when construction began in June last year to the first family to move into their new home. Tulliallan is an elevated address steeped in natural beauty and history. Positioned in the south east’s premier location, Tulliallan combines the serenity of leafy green open spaces, heritage buildings and access to an abundance of local amenities with a contemporary masterplanned community in which to build a dream home. But why did Chethiya and Udeshika choose Tulliallan? “The prime location at the edge of prestigious Berwick compelled us to consider Tulliallan,” Chethiya said. “The value of magnificent line of elm trees in the heart of Tulliallan gives an extra value to the estate. “Established shopping malls, prestigious
schools and universities, Buddhist temple and other needed amenities are around the corner. Not far from the train station and freeway. “Most of our friends are living in surrounding estates (while some are currently building in Tulliallan). “We are looking forward to their frequent company as well as meeting new neighbours at Tulliallan.” Chethiya said Tulliallan’s location was his favourite part of the new development. “It is situated in prime location which is close to all amenities such as shopping, schools/universities and is a decent, professional and reputed residence in Cranbourne North,” Chethiya said. While it’s not the first time that Chethiya and Udeshika have built, they were still pleased at how well it went. “We had an extremely smooth construction flow with Simonds. “The site supervisor (Ed) was excellent. Ed was able to complete the construction within three and half months which enabled us to win the prize.” The Tulliallan sales office is located at 805 Berwick–Cranbourne Road, Cranbourne North.

The program finishes in early April.

CASEY residents struggling to afford a computer and monitor now have an option, thanks to Avocare. The ‘Work for the Dole’ activity puts old, dying computers to good use, providing them free to anyone who needs one. Manager at Avocare, Deb Hutton, said it was the first time the learning solutions organisation had run the program and hoped it could continue. “We’re targeting school students and low income families who are going back to school,” Ms Hutton said. “This gives them an opportunity to get a computer for nothing which includes a monitor
and hard drive - the only things they have to buy are a keyboard and mouse.” Casey residents are encouraged to donate computers they no longer use to the program to be restored, cleaned and rebooted for someone in need. “To pick one up we just need to see a healthcare card because we want to make sure we are donating them to the right people, those who are genuinely struggling,” she said. Computers started piling in at Cranbourne Avocare in November and about 30 computers are ready to be donated. Ms Hutton said 18 of the ‘Work for the Dole’ team members decided whether the computer could be used, before

TRAINS on the Cranbourne line were the least punctual on the network in 2015, according to data recently released by Metro. Only 89.2 per cent of Cranbourne trains departed on schedule, marginally more than 89.3 per cent on the Pakenham line - the second lowest. The figure is slightly worse than the 2014 average, in line with the 0.3 per cent punctuality decrease across the Metro network as a whole. The statistics come as the State Government considers drastic action to improve the line, including the possibility of converting parts of track into an elevated ‘sky rail’. The Daniel Andrews government has committed to removing 12 level crossings on the Cranbourne-Pakenham line, however construction has not yet begun on any of them. Metro performance thresholds require that at

WINDERMERE is calling for support as its members prepare to embark on their annual trek through the Sumatran jungle later this year. Eight months before people representing the Narre Warren organisation set out on the Trek to Transform Lives - which will run from 7 to 16 October - they have started fund-raising to reach their $3000 target. And they are calling for anyone out there to help their cause. It’s a cause for people like Carla, who with the help of Windermere Child and Family Services was able to save herself and her eight-year-old son from an abusive relationship.
“He beat me with a sledgehammer and left me to die on the kitchen floor in front of my eight year old son,” she said. But even when she got out, more challenges lay ahead. Carla was forced to sell her home and if it weren’t for Windermere, she doesn’t know what would have happened. Fortunately, the organisation was able to give Carla and her son access to temporary housing. “There are many Australians out there suffering from neglect, abuse and the kinds of hardship that life sometimes throws at us,” Windermere CEO Lynette Buoy said. “At Windermere, we aim to
transform the lives of those who need it most but we need help. “We’re thrilled to launch our Sumatran Trek to Transform Lives because while trekking through jungle won’t necessarily be easy, it is a small taste of the hardships that face the majority of people that we see at Windermere.” With every kilometre completed on the trek, Dr Buoy said, participants will be helping to change lives. “And we’ll be there to support them along the way because their challenge is our challenge,” she said. For more information and to help the cause, visit www.windermere.org.au

INSIDE a Mitsubishi would be the last place to expect to see a pair of WPL Gold Medals hanging. It’s an odd spot for most to put their accolades but for Tiffany Eliadis it’s a great reminder of what she’s done and where she still wants to go with her soccer as she drives to her matches or training sessions. After back-to-back Women’s Premier League titles with South Melbourne, Eliadis, 20, from Endeavour Hills, will change course on her career after she joined the newly formed Southern United. While it’s tough to farewell her adopted club after many fruitful seasons, Eliadis felt the time was right to take on another big test - the Women’s National Premier League. “I just wanted a new challenge, to be honest,” Eliadis said. “Staying at South would’ve been the easy option but seeing that the WNPL would be something completely different for
women’s football I thought why not be a part of it. “I always like to challenge myself with new things and it’s a club that’s trying to slowly build itself up and before I went to South, they were a bit like that too. “Going to Southern is a little like that and I feel that they’ll boost themselves up and I want to be a part of it, to be honest, on the south-east side.” Joining Southern United alongside SMFC team-mate Saphri Lines and reuniting with her former Rowville Sports Academy coach Stuart Munro - Eliadis thinks Southern is set to up the ante with fast-paced, attacking style. “It will definitely be a passing game - won’t be a boot it long and chase kind of thing,” Eliadis said. “The girls will get into the routine of passing and relaxing on the ball and making better decisions I think that’s what Stuart is trying to implement as well - better decision making and quicker speed of play.”
One big day for basketball

By JARROD POTTER AUSTRALIA Day means only one thing to the region’s basketball fanatics - the big tournament. Players from across the state descended on Dandenong and Eltham Basketball Stadiums with the annual Eltham Dandenong Junior Basketball Tournament running across the weekend. The senior sides did especially well as the men’s under-20 Cavaliers - in section B1 - and the girls under-18 B claimed titles. Playing at Dandenong in Sunday’s final - the under-20 men had swept their pool stage with five consecutive wins to book the spot in the finals. They finished the job against McKinnon Tigers in the grand final - sweeping the series with a 43-27 triumph. The under-18 ladies took victory after an incredible campaign - knocking off Frankston 40-30 in a semi-final before backing up to steamroll the Stirling Senators 41-34 and take the under-18 B title. Casey B16.1 smashed Knox 2 in a semi-final 53-13 but had to settle for the silver medal in a hard-fought 38-54 loss to Dandenong 2. Also earning second place were the girls under-14 A Res and under-14 B2 girls.
Eliadis encouraged all southeastern soccer girls to head along and try out for Southern United ahead of the inaugural WNPL season. While it’s a daunting prospect to jump up to the top tier in Victoria, Eliadis had the same concerns when she was younger but thought her switch to South Melbourne was the greatest move she ever made. “Take a chance - you won’t know unless you try and you’ve got to take risks to be better,” Eliadis said. “When I was younger I took a risk as a 14-year-old to go play in senior level and it was the best thing I probably ever did. “I even spoke to a few who were trying out for the 18s and told them to come into the seniors and they said that it’s obviously a major difference but you’d only get better if you push yourself.” In the meantime she’ll tick off the kilometres in her purple Mirage waiting for the season to start next month - with her medals as a solid reminder of her capabilities.

Many more junior Cavaliers sides made the finals only to be just edged into third or fourth, missing out on any grand final appearances. Under 18 A Res lost a highscoring thriller against Pakenham 52-56 in a semi-final, Under 16 C1 finished fourth after losing to Skyplay Redbacks 8-23. Under 16 boys B1 lost to Melbourne and so did the boys’ under 14 C3 Cavaliers. Cavaliers five boys under 12
C1 just missed out on the grand final, beaten by regional rival Pakenham 11-25 in a semi, the under 14 B2 - Cavaliers 2 - were agonisingly short of a grand final - losing 14-15 to Knox. Cavaliers four was edged out in boys under-14 C1 by Dandenong while the under-12 C2, boys under-14.1, boys under 12 B2, girls under-12.1 and Cavaliers 2 under 12 B1 boys finished third, losing to Knox three in their final match of the weekend. But, nonetheless, the little basketball stars in the making impressed many on the big stage as the weekend stands as good practice, especially with the VJBL summer season in full swing and heading towards finals.
Dandy Rays-ing youth girls standards By JARROD POTTER MAKING the next cut in pursuit of a Victorian jersey are 29 players from the Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls Academy (YGA). Out of hundreds to try out for the Big V, the Stingrays crew were part of the final 130 hoping to gain selection for the national championships. Dandenong’s All Australian schoolgirls pair Courtney Jones (Cranbourne) and Emily Browning (Lyndhurst) were snatched up quickly by Vic Metro scouts ahead of this year’s AFL National Youth Girls Championships - which will finally return home and be held in Melbourne from 2 to 5 May. Familiar local faces in Bea-
consfield quartet Georgia Gee, Tyla Hanks, Ruby Clayton and Brooke Struylaart are in the 65-woman Vic Metro squad alongside former Vic Metro pair Logan O’Connell-Webb (Lyndhurst) and Georgia Gourlay (Cranbourne). As well as the 19 selected in the Vic Metro preliminary squad, another 10 have a chance to be coached at the state level by their YGA coach Scott Gowans, who was announced as Vic Country head coach earlier this week. Screening days for both squads will be held in the lead up to the National Championships, with Vic Country to hold their event on Sunday 7 February at North Melbourne Football Club, and Vic Metro to be
held at Richmond Football Club on 4 March. Tigers roar past Panthers By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 14 AGONISINGLY close to a tremendous upset, Dandenong (164) needed one more partnership to seal the deal against Monash Tigers (195 and 5/74). Monash brought back the big artillery for the second day against Dandenong - with Big Bash pair Cameron White and Dan Christian returning to wreak havoc with the ball. The steady start from Brett Forsyth (44) and Tanner Stanton (11) came unstuck fast as Allan Wise (3/33) and the Tigers appealed long and hard to get Stanton out - before skittling Cam Forsyth (2) a few balls later. Forsyth fell next - hitting out against Marcus Berryman (4/32) - before Matt Shimell (2/31) joined the party and in the space of 30 runs, the Panthers had shed the entire top order and went into lunch with shoulders slumped at 7/118. That should’ve been the end of the story with Dandenong’s notoriously fragile tail this year, but another chapter was written by Ed Newman (15), David Alleyne (27no) and Adam McMaster (23) down the order. It was hard going - Berryman tried to bounce their heads off while Wise and Christian
were using the gale-force winds to their advantage - but the lads dug deep. Newman fell first - not before striking a gutsy 15 at only 16 years-old - before McMaster showed he’s a dab-hand late in the game. Carrying on from his bowling last week, McMaster struck a couple of fours Dandy’s older statesmen would’ve been thrilled to hit, including a sensational late cut over backward point from a wide Berryman bouncer. Chipping it around, edging the singles while crunching the occasional bad ball to the rope, the Alleyne-McMaster partnership pushed towards 50 before the worst of dismissals for McMaster. With White (1/7) introduced to the attack from the scoreboard end against the wind, McMaster tried to feather one down the leg-side, didn’t get anything on it ... but was caught by keeper Jack Harper and given out to his dismay. His wicket began the end as Monash cleaned up the hosts in the 65th over. Monash’s second innings hit around was highlighted by the strong bowling of McMaster (2/26) and Wilcock (2/14). “They got on a bit of a roll,” Dandenong skipper Tom Donnell said. “Tanner was very unlucky to go out when the umpire
was pressured a bit to give him out and that got their tails up and ran through us a bit until lunch. “That was the hardest period for us - the first hour was really good, Brett and Tanner did well - but once we lost Tanner it sort of fell away a bit. “Ed Newman had his first hit and got us back on track a little bit, then Adam had a great game - both weekends - and did really well, he’s only a 19-yearold and is really important for our future.” The loss leaves Dandenong well off the pace in 12th position and with only three rounds left, will need wins aplenty and other results to go its way to make the top-eight. It starts this weekend away against Melbourne Uni. The best effort from CaseySouth Melbourne (188) was not enough to carry the day against Ringwood (4/189). The Swans bowling - missing spearhead Nathan Lambden this round could not halt the likes of David King (76) and Ian Holland (58no) as the hosts chased down the total with ease. Brendan Rose (1/35) was economical from his 21.2 overs - eking out 10 maidens. Casey-South Melbourne host Northcote in its third-last clash of the season.

Casey stands to be counted By JARROD POTTER DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW ROUND 8 (Day 2) THREE out of five Casey area sides are up and about this Turf 1 season - with Cranbourne, Berwick and Heinz Southern Districts consolidating their spots in the race to the finals. Starting with second place, Cranbourne (229) edged out Hallam Kalora Park (227) in a surprise thriller at Frawley Road. The early going was forged by Ben Hillard (19) and Jagveer Hayer (27) - who both fell to Steve Spoljaric (4/58) after a gutsy first-hour stand. The effort was passed to Ryan Hillard (68) and Cory Booth (55) - adding 89 to keep the Eagles from swooping through the order. Hillard would find himself run out, and from there the match turned back towards Cranbourne as the Hallam tail failed. Jordan Hammond (26) tried to keep things together but was run out trying to keep the run-rate on track. With the overs ticking down, Chris Pereira (8) and Matt Foenander (6) tried one last time to take the points, but when Foenander fell to another run out, it was lights’ out for the Hawks. Berwick (207) brushed aside Narre Warren (119 and 4/164) to keep the Bears safe inside the top four. Christopher Edwards (44) and Atishnish Chouhan (27) tried their best but couldn’t hold off Jack Williams (4/44),

If only they batted their second innings first as the Magpies soared via Janaka Liyanabadalge (71no) and Kaushalya Weeraratne (43). Dandenong West (113) was no match for Heinz Southern Districts (184 and 3/89) as the best efforts of Sam Bracey (44) and Clay McCartney (32) paled in comparison to Michael Davies (7/31) barrage. Going one better than his “drop-punt catch” in last year’s semi-final, Davies took chunks out of the Bulls attack to claim his second seven-for and eighth in weekend DDCA cricket.
Ladder-leading Springvale South (5/195dec) surprised noone with a whopping outrightvictory over Lyndale (84 and 88) - led by a 10-wicket match and a hat-trick from former Sri Lankan player Malinga Bandara. Mordialloc (7/263) belted Buckley Ridges (179), while Parkfield (134) defeated North Dandenong (125 and 7/108) in a last wicket thriller. In the battle for bottom of the table, Narre Warren takes on Lyndale, Hallam Kalora Park is away at Dandenong West, Cranbourne hosts Buckley Ridges, North Dandenong takes on Berwick, while Heinz will fight to hold onto fourth against Mordialloc.

Tooradin’s T20 triumph By DAVID NAGEL TOORADIN (5/215) has hoisted its first piece of senior silverware in almost three years after blowing Kooweerup (114) off the park in the WGCA Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup grand final at Toomuc Reserve on Sunday. And the man who held aloft that Premier Division trophy back in 2012/13, Aaron Avery (79 not out off 34 balls), was the star attraction. He put behind him a recent run of outs to produce something extraordinary and claim man-of-the-match honours along the way. The Seagulls now progress through to the region eight finals, where they will represent
the WGCA against the very best from the Mornington Peninsula, Ferntree Gully and Yarra Valley leagues. The end goal for the Seagulls is now the Statewide Twenty20 Cup grand final which will be held in early 2017 at the MCG. Tooradin set the win up with the bat, with Avery, Dan Hunt (47 off 18 balls) and Bradey Welsh (70 not out off 47 balls) taking the early momentum. The Demons temporarily fought back through the middle overs, restricting the Seagulls to 20 runs from five overs, but it was merely a pre-cursor to Avery’s magnificent knock. “That’s the best I’ve ever seen him bat and it’s a real credit to Az,” Seagulls T20 captain
Dylan Sutton said. “It was just a matter of time before he turned things around but to turn it around like that that was amazing to watch.” Avery and Welsh finished the Seagulls’ innings with overs of 15, 11, 14, 14, 16, 14 and 13 - 97 runs off seven overs - to leave the Demons stunned. Seagulls opener Jarred Thompson (22 off 3 overs) then claimed the wickets of Chris (1) and John Bright (0) in the Demons' first over to effectively end the game as a contest. Chris Brennan (3/14 off 3) and Josh Lownds (2/18 off 3) also bowled superbly for the winners while Jake Bardwell (49 off 36) was the best performed Demons batsman.

A crash course By DAVID NAGEL
TOORADIN’S hopes of playing in its sixth consecutive WGCA Premier Division finals series are balancing on a knife-edge after a disappointing batting display against Cardinia (0/15) at Gunton Oval on Saturday. The worrying sign for Tom Hussey and his side is the increased frequency with which these failures are occurring - bowled out for 59 by Pakenham in round seven, for 111 against Merinda Park in round 11 and now for another modest total against the Bulls. On Saturday, the Seagulls had a plan. “To bat steadily, keep wickets in hand and then to score heavily in the later overs,” Hussey said. “But it all fell apart in a hurry - in an over or two.” Hussey (50), Daniel Hunt (40) and Aaron Avery (19) had the plan on track at 4/122, but things did fall apart in spectacular fashion once those three departed the crease. There were no late runs as the mesmerising Dwayne Doig (4/45 off 25.1) joined forces with Brayden Browne (2/15) and Travis Wheller (2/9) to take the last six wickets for just nine runs. Ben Parrot (9 not out) and Alex Nooy (6 not out) then saw the Bulls safely through to stumps. Merinda Park’s (3/242) chances of playing finals have basically doubled after the Cobras turned up the heat against Cranbourne Meadows (83) at Lawson Poole Reserve. Banking outright points against the Rebels would mean they only need to win one of their last two, against the Demons or Upper Beaconsfield, to take their place as a top-four side. Danny Diwell (6/45 off 18) and Leigh Paterson (3/34) led the way with the ball before their team-mates made batting look easy in reply. Dylan Cuthbertson (96 not out)
Tooradin skipper Tom Hussey made a fighting half century but will need to rally his troops after a Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS disappointing day against Cardinia. 149248 is on the precipice of his first Premier Division century, smacking nine fours and five sixes along the way, while Dan McCalman (66), Anthony Craddock (26) and Paul Filippone (34 not out) all valued their team’s position before self. Kooweerup (3/88) looks set to hold on to fourth place after Chris O’Hara (5/30) and Jess Mathers (4/65) ran through Emerald (123) at Chandler Reserve. A.J. Walker (33) and Mitch Copey (30) held the Bombers’ top-
order together before O’Hara and Mathers cut loose. Demons’ skipper Michael Giles (30 not out) will look to build on his core this weekend. And finally, Pakenham (254) champion Chris Smith (113) and Upper Beaconsfield (0/4) skipper Scott Pitcher (7/47) waged a twoman war at Upper Beaconsfield. Smith’s century was his fourth for the season and his 11th since the WGCA Premier Division began in 2009/10. He has now made 663
runs for the season and has taken 17 wickets to boot. He is a short-priced favourite to take out this year’s top-individual prize, the Terry Stephenson Medal. Pitcher’s leg-spinners have been equally impressive, with his sevenwicket haul taking his wicket tally to a league-leading 35 for the season. Rob Elston (29) and Zac Chaplin (26) provided Smith with great support, while Kyle Gibbs (1/31 off 14) bowled a tidy spell for the Maroons.
Metro regime for the girls from the bush By JARROD POTTER ONE team is enough for most footy coaches - let alone what Scott Gowans has embarked upon in 2016. Adding to an already jam-packed football schedule, the Longwarry and Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls Academy coach is now at the helm of his third side - the Vic Country Youth Girls. He’s made the switch from Vic Metro Youth Girls assistant to taking the reins of Vic Country for the 2016 AFL Youth Girls National Championships, held in May across Melbourne. “I was quite excited when I was announced and just looking forward to the challenge as it’s a big challenge,” Gowans said. “It is good though as I’m very lucky that all three (teams) are very supportive of each other - so my Longwarry commitments blend in fairly well with the Stingrays and Stingrays with Vic Country. While it’s weird to leave the Metro ranks - and face the prospect of coaching against some of his Stingrays squad members and former Vic Metro players - Gowans thought it was the right time to take on the new role.
Scott Gowans has been selected as Vic Country Youth Girls' head Picture: JARROD POTTER coach. 146957 “The accepting thing was I got a lot of supportive messages from the Metro girls - that makes me feel a little better but obviously when we play Metro it will be a little bit funny,” Gowans said. “I’ve also learned heaps off (Vic Metro coach) Wayne (Siekman) - he’s very structured in time management and game plans ... and if you’ve got a particular game plan, you’re recruiting girls to play to that
plan, not just picking the best 27 girls to play footy. “I want to teach the Country girls and Stingrays girls it’s all about the process and the outcomes will take care of themselves. “Part of that is people will get promoted and move to other things - that’s something we all need to develop as a coach or a player.” Numbers have already been impressive for the Country contingent,
as the first round of tryouts had 55 elite players attend. Gowans admits Vic Country’s winless national championship record is his first port of call and hopes to bring the best metropolitan strategies to the regional squad to turn the form around. “The big difference between Country and Metro was the professionalism,” Gowans said. “Country was a little bit, I suppose, had a country feel to it ... just not as professional, but I’m going to bring in that professionalism and metro feel - they’ll be a lot more serious. “They haven’t won a game yet at the nationals - they’re 0-8 - and I want to be able to win our first game.” It all boils down to the players he can put on the park and Gowans thinks the rest of the competition is set for a surprise as his Vic Country contingent has advanced drastically. “The talent is huge - just from the first session I’ve got two existing coaches from last year and they couldn’t believe the talent,” Gowans said. “It’s just gone up another level ... girls who were perhaps really good players last year, they’re only just in the mix this year.”
Pride on the line By DAVID NAGEL WEST Gippsland cricket’s finest players will look to break a six-year drought when Country Week begins on Monday 1 February. Country Week is the carnival where the very best country cricketers from around the state converge on metropolitan Melbourne to put their skills to the ultimate test. The West Gippsland Warriors have not tasted success since 2009, when Kooweerup all-rounder Shane ‘The Great Man’ Dole led the WGCA to the Division 3 title. Clyde’s Kyle Brooke, co vicecaptain of this year’s team, would love nothing better than to emulate that success. “You hear stories from 2009 and those players say the feeling was like winning a grand final at their own clubs,” Brooke said. “To play for your league and work your butt off and then come home with the ultimate reward, I can’t think of too many things better than that.” The Warriors take on Colac, Seymour, Warragul and Goulburn Murray but also have to contend with Central Gippsland, Wangaratta and Yarra Valley, who will all be looking to qualify for the Division 3 grand final on Friday 5 February. The best chance for locals to see the Warriors in action will be at Endeavour Hills on Wednesday 3 February, when they take on Warragul. The Squad: A.J. Walker (Emerald - Captain), Kyle Brooke (Clyde), Jason Williams (Pakenham), Chris Bright (Kooweerup), Scott Clark (PUT), Dylan Cuthbertson (Merinda Park), Rob Elston (Pakenham), Hashan Goonetilleke (Emerald), Matt Hutchinson (Devon Meadows), Dan McCalman (Merinda Park), Alex Nooy (Cardinia), Jack Ryan (Pakenham), John Simpson (Clyde), Sam Van Der Zalm (Devon Meadows). REBECCA Henderson was already two-thirds of the way to becoming a triathlete ... she just didn’t know she would become one until last year. Henderson, 14, from Berwick, has been a sensational athlete on land - winning junior national and state titles - as well as in the water - as an open water dynamo who is also making her way in the pool. But on a whim she put together the final piece of the triathlon puzzle as Henderson hopped on the bike and hasn’t stopped starring in her next sporting pursuit. Her talent was spotted pretty quickly - with Triathlon Victoria selecting her for a development program and in only her fifth race, Henderson booked her place on the School Sports Victoria triathlon team.
“I only started in May last year - we’d done a few triathlons before, but it was just kind of for fun then we started taking it seriously,” Henderson said. “Someone told us about the trials for the development squad then we went and I got in. “I like that there’s swimming and running together and I like the bike, it’s pretty good now ... it’s great that there’s the three (sports) and not just one.” She had to go through three tryout races across the state, but with three high-ranking finishes, it was more than enough to book her ticket to the national championships. “There were three of them (SSV tryouts) - they had points and picked the first six,” Henderson said. “I got second in Yarrawonga, then one was in Mordialloc and the
other one in Elwood I got second again - so hopefully I can do well at the nationals.” The Berwick College student has got a lot on her sporting plate this year - the Athletics Australia national championships in Perth, plenty of Little Athletics competitions and she’s stepped up her poolside commitments by joining the Casey TigerSharks. That leaves her with a lot of training sessions to endure, but Henderson wouldn’t have it any other way as she prepares for her first School Sports Australia triathlon championships, held at Hervey Bay from 1821 April. Henderson wanted to thank Keith Colomb, Jess Marshall and Steph Demestichas and her parents for their support of her brand-new sporting passion.
Rebecca Henderson has made an immediate impact in her beloved new sport - the triathlon. 149296 Picture: JARROD POTTER
Bowlers fight for their wins HAMPTON PARK BOWLS Midweek Pennant returned for Hampton Park Bowlers with two fighting wins. Division One travelled to Camberwell Central and finished five shot victors. The early good work by Geoff Ladner, Ron Beverly, Helen Lambert and Denise Eastick, was undone when they dropped an eight on the third end. This ended with a six shot win, 32-26. Val Moore, Ann Westwell, Ellen Smith and Chris Hendrie also won by six, 27-21. Marion Battaglia, Toni Sutton, Andrew Brandolin and Neville Hendrie had an up and down day finishing down 15-22. Hampton Park (1) 14-74 defeated Camberwell Central (1) 2-69. Division Three played at Pound Road against the top team Armadale and it also had a five-shot win. Lou Soligo, Jen Sherry, Gwen Clough and Ray Wood let a good lead slip to lose 19-23 but their score was covered by Ian Kitt, June Damon, Chris Barnes and Geoff Ampt who won 23-19. The rink of Peter Hayden, Rob Woff, Jim Westwell and Heather Naismith won the day for the Parkers with a five shot 19-14 win. The win promoted Hampton Park to second on the ladder at this middle stage of the season. Hampton Park (2) 14-61 defeated Armadale (4) 2-56.
SATURDAY On Saturday, Division One put in a more spirited performance but still went down by 10 shots to Coatsville. Geoff Ampt, Jack Edwards, Chris Barnes and Laurie Edwards led all day to win 27-8 while Shane Hardy, Neville Hendrie, Andrew Brandolin and Warwick Hardy faltered in the last two ends to lose 15-20. John Wright, Peter Hayden, Sean McDonald and Steve Barnes fought hard but lost 14-21 and Chris Hendrie, John Nunan, Ian Bartlett and Larry Simpson lost 11-28. Hampton Park (1) 2-67 lost to Coatsville (1) 16-77. Division Three went to Chadstone for a disappointing loss. Heather Naismith, Marion Battaglia, Toni Sutton and Denise Eastick were the only winners, 23-19, while Richard Pallet, Dave Clarke, Stan Hatch and Ken Cobden drew 17-17. Trevor Harbright, Ellen Smith, Geoff Ladner and Mark Paton lost 16-24 and Aaron Ottaway, Jim Westwell, Ron Beverly and Helen Lambert lost 16-25. Hampton Park (2) 3-72 lost to Chadstone (1) 15-85 Division Six went to Mulgrave CC for the club’s only Saturday win. Bob Nicol, Lou Soligo, Vince Kovacic and Rob Woff led the way winning 29-7 and Val Simpson, Rudi Oost, Gerry Cox and Ian Kitt helped with a 22-15 win. Ian Kitt skipped his rink to a 22-15 win over Mulgrave.
Rob Woff played a key role in Hampton Park's big victory over ladder-leaders Armadale. Hampton Park bowlers Geoff Ampt, left, and Laurie Edwards fought out the final of the Casey District Men’s Singles. Geoff won a tense affair 25-13 to take out the title.
son and Craig Richards lost 17-26. Hampton Park (3) 14-84 defeated Mulgrave CC (9) 4-76 SUNDAY Hampton Park had three bowlers competing at Cranbourne for Casey Singles titles on Sunday. Club Ladies Champion Helen Lambert, started the day well winning her second round of the Champion of Champions with a late
charge win, 25-17. Laurie Edwards and Geoff Ampt then had the semi-finals of the Casey District men’s singles. Laurie had a strong finish in his game to win 25-17 and Geoff won 25-7. This set up an all Hampton Park final. In a tense affair, Geoff Ampt finally won 25-13.
Mad over Harry’s result - some more than others CRANBOURNE BOWLS SATURDAY PENNANT HARRY Van Soest was at his very best and that made his Waverley opposition mad about Harry. Winning by 17 shots thanks to a great performance by Harry and his rink with great contributions from club legend Ray Boskell and Andy Kidd who won by 15 shots which was the difference in defeating fancied finals contender Waverley golf in Division Three bowls on Saturday. Meanwhile the number one side in Division Two experienced “an inexplicable result” according to the comment made after the game by team manager Steve Bentley with the side being crushed by 49 shots, resulting in a bad loss for the club with all four rinks losing on the day.
It was a different story for side two with the rink of Garry Hunt and his team of Ray Boskell, Harry Van Soest and Andy Kidd winning by 15 shots resulting in a 17 shot win against Waverley Golf. Side Three went down to Ferntree Gully by 26 shots with all four rinks losing on the day. Sofio Raiti conducted a special training run on Thursday evening with his team of Tony Scranton, Paul McNamara and John Forsyth which paid dividends with his rink winning by 11 shots giving a one shot victory to the number four side against MCC Kew. LADIES PENNANT The ladies were in a winning mood during the week after crushing Mulgrave Country Club by a massive 39 shots.
All three rinks had massive wins with the highest margin of 15 shots obtained by Barbara Fulton, Brenda De Lisle, Pat Boltong and Maree Taylor. Cranbourne results for round 13. Reviews and news…
Small car is a big show By EWAN KENNEDY THE Skoda Fabia comes as a hatchback and wagon, interior space is something in which Skoda has specialised for many years. Cargo carrying capacity in this small vehicle is 1125 litres with the rear seat backs folded for the hatch, and 1370 litres for the wagon. Many small to medium SUVs have less usable room. Our test vehicle was Fabia 66TSI manual station wagon with a price of $17,140 plus on-road costs. The hatchback range starts at $15,990 plus onroads. The third generation Skoda Fabia takes a new direction in overall styling, the hatch is eight millimetres shorter, 90mm wider and 31mm lower than its predecessor. Note that the wagon is a significant 265 millimetres longer than the hatch for increased luggage space. The added width imbues the front with a stronger character, while distinctive sharp, wide headlights, crystalline glass, slatted grille and the brand’s winged arrow on the bonnet’s nose leave no doubt as to the car’s origins. To try and grab buyers with a taste for more than a car in one of 500 shades of grey, Skoda Fabia can be customised inside and out. Six body colours are available, including standard Candy White and
Model range
Bright colours are there to attract new buyers to Skoda’s cute little Fabia. Corrida Red; and metallic Race Blue, Magic Black, Quartz Grey and Moon White. A vibrant Sprint Yellow and Rally Green Metallic are available with the Colour Concept. With the Colour Concept option customers can choose between four colours for the roof, including A-pillars and mirror housings - silver, white, black or red. The interior is also offered in an array of colours and combinations. The new Fabia has a Bolero infotainment system has a 6.5-inch TFT
colour touchscreen. There’s smartphone connectivity via SmartLink as standard. It works with both Apple’s CarPlay and Android Auto software. The second generation of Volkswagen’s Modular Infotainment Matrix (MIM) offers Fabia DAB digital radio (an option that’s part of the $2600 Premium Sports Pack), zoom and swipe smartphone-style operation and Bluetooth connection. A 1.2-litre 66TSI turbo-petrol engine produces 66 kW of power and is mated with a five-speed manual transmission.
Fabia 66TSI five-door hatch: $15,990 (manual) Fabia 81TSI five-door hatch: $20,290 (DSG) Fabia 66TSI five-door wagon: $17,140 (manual) Fabia 81TSI five-door wagon: $21,440 (DSG)
The same engine in a higher state of tune is ranked at 81 kW. Tagged the 81TSI engine it’s paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission. Both powerplants have a Euro 6 emission rating. Top torque figures are 160 and 175 Nm respectively, not a huge amount of grunt, but it comes in at a pleasingly low 1400 rev on both engines so is very usable. Fabia is fitted standard with the latest technology in Front Assist with the City Emergency Braking function across the range. This uses radar to measure the dis-
tance to the vehicle in front. Whenever the distance is too short, Front Assist gives audio and visual warnings - then automatic emergency stopping if the driver still doesn’t do the right thing. There’s a Multi-collision Brake System that reduces the risk of the vehicle becoming involved in a subsequent collision following the initial crash or at least reduces the speed. When the Multi-Collision Brake is activated it automatically turns on the brake lights and hazard lights. The driver can override the system by accelerating or initiating emergency braking. Again, the Czech’s determination to provide good interior space shows through. There’s room for four full-sized adults without the need to compromise overmuch in rear legroom. Three across the back seat will need to be good friends, though. On our usual drive route in city, suburban and country traffic the freespinning 66 kW TSI motor responded well, taking even steep gradients in its stride thanks to the low-rev grunt provided by the turbocharger. A six-speed manual would be nice, but makers have to keep costs down somehow. Nevertheless we wouldn’t be surprised to see one at the first facelift.
