■ Priest has faith in breaking the silence...

Speaking out By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A PRIEST who has taken a stand against family violence has been crowned Greater Dandenong’s Citizen of the Year. Father Jean Mawal, 36, who is priest of St Paul’s Antiochian Orthodox Church in Dandenong, was presented with the council’s top annual citizenship award in Dandenong on Australia Day. He is one of several south-east faith leaders heading a three-year Challenge Family Violence project in Melbourne’s south-east. Since speaking out at his church, the Endeavour Hills father of three has been taken aback by how pervasive the problem is. The issue has previously been hard to talk about in multicultural and faith-based communities. In recent times, however, he has witnessed many victims share their experiences and he hasn’t been afraid to educate those sharing derogatory sexist jokes on social media. He’s faced up to perpetrators, some in denial, some who are eventually reported to police. “In some cases that is necessary,” he said. “The priority is to protect the safety and wellbeing of children and the family. “Absolutely, yes, it’s very difficult to deal with. It’s sad to see so many disclosures but now people acknowledge they have to do something about it and not blame the victim.” Fr Mawal said he has to recognise abusers who admit they have a “genuine problem”. The Challenge Family Violence project, jointly run by Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia councils, wound up late last year. He hopes more resources will be invested beyond the project which has developed an interfaith family violence-prevention resource kit with information and support contact numbers. He said the message needs to be sent to groups such as sports clubs. “The best benefit is that there is more awareness - a beginning of an education.” On a personal level, the project has helped him

Jean Mawal says family violence can only be solved by respect and equality for women. to be more sensitive and aware as a parent and pastor, he said. Though family violence isn’t in decline, Fr Mawal thinks the silence surrounding the issue has broken. “The fact you can get so many people involved with the project, to acknowledge we do have a

problem that’s across culture and across faith there is a significant movement. “The stats (of family violence incidence) are not changing. It’s going to take a time for that to change.” Fr Mawal said the Citizen of the Year award will give more “authority” to his message.

“The greatest message is equality between men and women. “That is realised when we change, whether it be work structures, church or faith-based community structures. “We have to make an effort to do something about it.”

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong Council is considering “tweaks” to its controversial Springvale parking meters, less than three months since their installation. The parking meters, which have been the target of vandals and have been fiercely criticised by trader group Springvale Asian Business Association, have been blamed for drivers deserting Warwick Avenue car park. At a council meeting on 25 January, councillor Youhorn Chea called for a change of strategy, such as reducing the $1.20-an-hour charge in the “mostly empty” car park as well as Buckingham, Balmoral and Windsor avenues. The meter charge was higher than nearby private car parks as cheap as 60 cents an hour. “No one goes to Springvale,” Cr Chea said. “We should be looking at a strategy to support the small businesspeople in Springvale.”

Cr Roz Blades told the meeting that traders on Springvale Road’s eastside were particularly affected, noting a recent influx of customers at Springvale South shopping centre several kilometres away. Engineering director Julie Reid told the meeting that the council would survey the Warwick Avenue car park’s use once Springvale Rise Primary School re-opens. The survey was being brought forward several months ahead of schedule, Ms Reid said. Its results were expected by the end of March. Although Cr Sean O’Reilly said he supported the meters, he said that the council should make “tactical tweaking” to the system prior to the survey’s conclusions. He said the meters could potentially enhance or damage local business, requiring the council to be more “nimble” in its response. The “obviously under-utilised” War-

wick Street car park was an “obvious” target for tweaks, he said. In justifying the meters last year, the council said that meters would help decongest street parking which can be up to 97 per cent full on Friday and Saturday peak times. Councillors also reported continuing problems with broken ticket machines and boom gates at the council’s multideck No.8 car park in Balmoral Avenue. Cr O’Reilly recounted an incident in which he and eight other drivers were stuck behind the closed exit boom gate, with emergency calls to the car park operator going unanswered. “There’s just one way in and one way out. This needs to be looked at as a priority.” City development director Jody Bosman said the council was in talks with the machine and boom gate suppliers. There was a possibility of replacing the technology with “less problematic” mechanisms, he said.

IN BRIEF Bite back A WOMAN bit a man who confronted her from behind and demanded her phone in Springvale. The 23-year-old woman was walking north along Springvale Road about 10.40pm on Australia Day when the attacker approached her from behind and demanded her Samsung Galaxy. When the victim refused, the man grabbed her by the shirt and her left arm and demanded the phone again. The woman then bit the man on the arm, drawing blood, but the attacker managed to take the phone and fled on a red bike, heading south on Springvale Road. The attacker is described as being of African appearance. Anyone who may have been in the area at the time is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Intruder alert AN INTRUDER was arrested after he fled a Dandenong home empty-handed when the occupants disturbed him. The man, aged in his 30s, broke into the Grace Avenue property about 9.30pm but fled when he was discovered by two of the occupants. He was soon found in a nearby street and later arrested by police. Nothing was stolen from the house. Anyone with information is urged to contact Senior Constable Kelly Markuzov at Dandenong Police Station on 9767 7487.

Correction THE article published in last week’s edition titled Creek Death stated that the City of Greater Dandenong was responsible for the maintenance of the path and bridge across Dandenong Creek Trail, where a cyclist drowned. This is not correct. The Journal is currently trying to clarify with Connect East and Melbourne Water which organisation is responsible for the bridge.

Tasty Vietnamese treats are in the baguette By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS KASEY Pham and her partner Danny Tran saw a missing ingredient in Noble Park’s emerging foodie wonderland and pounced. Their Peddler Tuck Shop cafe opened six months ago with a variety of home-made Vietnamese and other Asian fusion-style baguettes. Ms Pham left her family’s Vietnamese restaurant two doors down to experiment with bold takes on classic flavours such as crackling pork belly, teriyaki chicken, poached chicken, and lemongrass pork patties. These are embedded with cos lettuce, pickled carrots, daikon radish,

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL cucumber as well as the sensational aromas and crunch of fried shallots, fried peanuts and crushed roasted rice. Fresh chilli and a selection of hot sauces are optional. Ms Pham - a self-described “foodie girl” - said the fusion concept started with the traditional Vietnamese pork bun and she took it further. “Growing up, I loved all the authentic food that my mother cooked.

transition stage as far as staff and banking arrangements were concerned. However, all agreed there would be no set pattern to cover the Stater as a whole - “one area of Victoria could be as quiet as a grave yard; another could be as busy as Bourke Street on a Saturday morning” one licensee said. Drinkers’ possible reactions to 10 o‘clock closing are still a mystery, and predictions vary widely. What may be considered the average publican’s thoughts were expressed by Mr N Tucker, the licensee of the Albion Hotel Dandenong. Asked about possible repercussion on the changeover, Mr Tucker said “That is something which has to be worked out. If people think that hotels are going to be turned into entertainment houses, they must realise that all those who want entertainment will have to pay a great deal more to have it”.

20 years ago 5 February 1996 PM Woos ‘Green’ Brigade Doveton’s wetlands at Myuna Farm provided a picturesque backdrop for the Prime Minister Keating last Monday, when he announced plans to expand the federally funded Landcare and Environment Action Program (LEAP). “The wetlands are a perfect example of what can be achieved under the program,” said Mr Keating as he walked around the grounds, followed closely by a bevy of cameramen, photographers and journalists. Earlier that day, Mr Keating had been in Frankston where he announced the Federal Government’s Young Australia program. On Thursday, day four of the election campaign, Mr Keating paid another visit to the area. This time he joined the federal

The coconut juice helps to sweeten and caramelise the meat, Ms Pham said. Another new addition is “sweetand-salty” prawns caramelised in brown sugar and fish sauce. The couple designed the café’s clean, trendy interior, drawing on Mr Tran’s strong tradie skills. “We wanted to make it a fresh, vibrant place that was welcoming,” Ms Pham said. “I believe we did that.” Peddler Tuck Shop is open Monday to Saturday at 15/21a Douglas Street, Noble Park. LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 3 February 1916 Commonwealth War Loan The response of the country to the Government’s call for men had been magnificent, and the conduct of the Australians under fire has gained the admiration of the civilised world. What these soldier sons of Australia have done will prove a heritage of incalculable benefit to our future generations and, in addition, repays in a measure the mother country in her hour of need for a protection which has enable us to enjoy the fullest liberty the world has known. It is hoped that the country’s call for money will be as successful as was the call for men. Many millions are needed to equip and maintain our troops at least on equality with the Kaiser’s hordes. There are in the country vast

supplies of wealth, to holders of this, to great institutions and to the wage earner, the Government now appeals for subscriptions to the second war loan. From the modest subscriber to a £10 bond. The investment is a good one and carries interest equal to 10 per cent for the full term of 10 years. The hour for thrift and economy is at hand; every pound saved and invested in the war loan helps our country and helps ourselves. 50 years ago 1 February 1966 The Six-O’Clock swill gone - now “We’ll just have to wait and see” was the general attitude of district hotel licensees at 6pm yesterday exactly 24 hours before the reality of 10 o’clock closing in Victoria. All licensees contacted by the Journal in a special survey said they were fully prepared to meet the

Labor candidate for Bruce Mr Alan Griffin to celebrate Medicare’s 12th birthday at Mulgrave Community Centre. 5 years ago 31 January 2011 Former Dandenong boy named Aussie of the Year Dandenong can lay claim to the 2011 Australian of the year Simon McKeon. Mr McKeon, who was born and bred in Dandenong, now lives in Brighton. TV crusher is turned on By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A BLUE-BOX - about the size of five Tardises - that rapidly dismantles and recycles discarded big-screen TVs, computers and other electronic gadgets has been launched in Dandenong. The Australian-first fullyautomated electronic waste processing system at PGM Refiners can take apart and sort up to 2500 tonnes of e-waste a year. The BluBox machine can dismantle 300 LCD-screen TVs in an hour, compared to just two to three an hour by hand. During the process, the plant safely extracts the potentiallyhazardous liquid metal mercury from the waste. All other components, such

as plastics and precious metals like gold, silver and platinum are extracted for re-use as a raw material. “All the components, except for the mercury, are a commodity,” PGM chief technical officer Karvan Jayaweery said. Mr Jayaweery said big screen TVs were increasingly the television of choice since 2007 and were becoming an “emerging problem” at landfill waste sites. Electronic waste is regarded as the fastest growing type of waste in Australia. The State Government, which has committed to banning e-waste from landfill, invested $470,000 in the $1.5 million machine.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Lisa Neville, who visited the plant this month, said the facility was a “significant advancement in how we process e-waste”. “This machine will reduce environmental and health impacts by eliminating the need to manually dismantle products, which can be unsafe and labour intensive.” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said it was great to see such innovative technology in Dandenong, which would help the environment and create jobs. The government is considering submissions for its discussion paper, Managing e-Waste in Victoria.

Orders to clean up heeded THIRTY-FOUR Dandenong residents were slapped with orders to clean up their properties in the lead-up to the current fire season. Officers inspected 1170 properties across the municipality over five days in November last year. Following the inspections Greater Dandenong’s Director Planning, Design and Amenity Jody Bosman said 34 notices were issued to properties to slash grass or create a fire break around the property’s boundary. “A further two days were taken to follow up on the 34 notices, resulting in only two infringements being issued for non-com-

pliance,” Mr Bosman said. “This was a remarkable decrease from the two previous fire seasons. In 2013-14 36 infringements were issued for non-compliance and in 2014-15 14 notices were issued. “It shows that people are taking fire prevention seriously and are willing to do what they need to protect themselves and their properties. “We have seen some devastating weather conditions in Victoria this summer and this is a warning for us all not to be complacent about the threat of fire, even in urban areas.” In 2015 in the Dandenong, Springvale, Keysborough and

Noble Park areas alone, the CFA attended 3973 incidents. These incidents included fires relating to building, outside rubbish, vegetation and vehicles. “These figures show us how important it is for council to work closely with residents and owners within the municipality to ensure they continue to comply and prepare for each fire season in accordance with each property’s needs,” Mr Bosman said. Help does the rounds By CASEY NEILL VOLUNTEERING has always come naturally to Frank Silvera. The 92-year-old from Dandenong North had been visiting Kathleen Brown at aged care centre Outlook Gardens each fortnight for the past 10 years. They’d matched through Keysborough Learning Centre’s (KLC) community visitors scheme. Mr Silvera said Ms Brown kept to herself but “didn’t mind me coming and talking to her”. “She was from India. I was able to talk to her a lot about the area where she lived in Bombay,” he said. “My sister was working for the government telegraphs and her father was the manager. “It was a strange coincidence - I had to come here to meet her!” He only retired from the program this past year, due to declining health. “I enjoyed her company,” he said. “When I’d enter the place, she’d say ‘what have you to tell me today about life in Bombay?’” Mr Silvera moved to Australia from India 26 years ago and spent time in Brisbane before settling in Melbourne. He soon became involved with Cooinda Centre, which was established in Dandenong and moved to Springvale South. “I was one of the first volunteers to join the Cooinda group,” he said. Three years ago, after 12 years as a volunteer, he switched places. “I’m not a volunteer anymore. I’m a client,” he said. “I go to the Monday group which is for Indian, Asian, Sri Lankan and Australian.” Daughter Belinda Luis said her father had been an amazing inspiration. “I’ve picked a lot of dad’s habits of

Frank Silvera with a magazine he delivers. 145253 sharing and caring for other people,” she said. “Volunteer work comes to us easily. “I volunteer feeding the homeless. My kids are doing it now as well. “It just becomes, I think, a cycle. “When we were young kids growing up, Dad would come home from his day job, be at home a little while and then he’d go to meetings. “It never stopped. It was like a second job to him.”

Picture: ROB CAREW

Community visitors scheme co-ordinator Jo Storm said the program was less about doing things for people and more about helping them to do things for themselves. “Volunteers play a fantastic role by being beside residents, taking them out in the community, chatting with them, driving them to places they would not otherwise get to,” she said. Eight new volunteers joined the team during the past financial year and five moved on.

“We have 28 volunteers visiting residents on a regular basis, some visit two or more residents at different aged care facilities,” Ms Storm said. “We have 10 different nationalities represented in our volunteers. This has been a wonderful asset, as some residents have not been able to have a proper conversation in their native language in years.” Call KLC on 9798 7005 for more information about the community visitors scheme or to get involved.

Teeing off for charity GOLFERS will tee off to help raise money for school books, shoes and uniforms at this year’s Take a Swing for Charity Golf Day event. The event, which has raised more than $250,000 for Greater Dandenong charities in the past seven years, will benefit the State Schools Relief Fund. Last year the golf day raised $44,000 for 679 disadvantaged students from 17 Greater Dandenong schools. Greater Dandenong Mayor Heang Tak said the event’s success depended on backing from local businesses. “This event is a chance for business and industry to come together to have fun, network and, more importantly, give back to the community,” councillor Tak said. “Keeping our young people at school is critical and any support we can give a child to continue their education cannot be overstated.” The golf day is at Sandhurst Golf Club, 600 Thompsons Road, Sandhurst, on Monday 22 February at 11.30am. Registrations close on 12 February. Details at www.greaterdandenong.com.

Golf rezone GREATER Dandenong Council has scaled back a push to rezone green wedge areas of Bangholme. Councillors agreed to withdraw their 23 November decision to advocate for the Bangholme precinct to be rezoned from green wedge to urban growth in a six-to-five vote on 14 December. They voted to ask the State Government to only rezone the Keysborough Golf Course land so its owners could relocate and sell the site for redevelopment. Councillor Matthew Kirwan moved the rescission motion, with Cr Peter Brown indicating opposition. Cr Kirwan said councillors had only a few hours to make up their minds on the previous motion and they had “mixed up the golf course and Bangholme precinct.

“I think it was rushed through, he said. He said industrial land could surround the Willow Lodge retirement village if the rezoning took place and threaten their tenancies. Cr Sean O’Reilly said the whole situation was highly hypothetical and “not a good thing for this council to be using its energy for. “There is no interest by the State Government to move the urban growth boundary in a substantial way, he said. Cr Brown said Cr Kirwan had misled Willow Lodge retirement village residents and that “no one can be forced off that site because the owner had a lease until 2060. The gallery met Cr Brown’s statements with jeers and boos. “If you want to tell lies, go outside and tell them - don’t tell them to us, one man shouted. Cr John Kelly also spoke

against the rescission motion. “This is the beginning. The consultation would be there if we could just get this off the ground, he said. “I’m really disappointed in the way that Cr Kirwan has got your emotions going. Cr O’Reilly threatened to take the decision behind closed doors as the hundreds-strong gallery became increasingly vocal. Crs Kirwan, Long, O’Reilly, Sampey, Memeti and Truong voted for the rescission, while Crs Brown, Kelly, Tak, Chea and Blades voted against it. Cr Long then successfully moved a motion that the council advocate for the Bangholme precinct to remain in the green wedge. She followed up with a motion to support Keysborough Golf Club’s bid to rezone and relocate. The motion received support from nine councillors.

DANDENONG charity Avocare has branched out into neighbouring Casey to offer computers to students who are unable to afford the vital link to the world wide web. The Work for the Dole scheme transforms old dying computers and provides them free to anyone who needs one. Avocare training manager Deb Hutton said it was the first time the organisation had run the computer rescue program. “We’re targeting school students and low income families who are going back to school,” Ms Hutton said. “This gives them an opportunity to get a computer for nothing which includes a monitor and hard drive the only things they have to buy are a keyboard and mouse.” Dandenong and Casey residents are encouraged to donate computers they no longer use to the program to be restored, cleaned and rebooted for someone in need. “To pick one up we just need to see a healthcare card because we want to make sure we are donating them to the right people, those who are genuinely struggling,” she said. Computers started piling in at Avocare’s Cranbourne workshop in November and about 30 computers are ready to be donated. Ms Hutton said 18 the Work for the Dole participants decided whether the computer are useable, before installing new software and testing and tagging all cords. “The great thing about this program is that people can pick up everything they need to make an office

Ms Hutton suggests people speak with the Work for the Dole team about which computer will best suit them. “Each computer will have dif-

FREE legal advice will be offered to parents, many whom struggle to navigate the child support system. Victoria Legal Aid lawyers will provide half-hour appointments in Dandenong from 5 February on problems such as getting or paying child support, paternity testing and maintenance payments. VLA child support program manager Kathleen Ng said the lawyers had experience helping parents navigate the child support system. “Many of the parents we advise find the system complex and hard to understand, especially if they have difficulties with language, a disability or limited education. “Parents with a history of family violence are particularly vulnerable.” Ms Ng said early legal advice helped avoid accruing arrears that may not be recovered.

“Our work is about making sure that children of separated parents are financially supported in accordance with the law.” In 2014-15 Victoria Legal Aid provided 149 services to City of Greater Dandenong residents with child support issues. The child support outreach service is available by appointment in Dandenong on 5 February, 19 February, 11 March, 1 April, 22 April, 6 May, 20 May, 3 June and 17 June. It is independent of the Department of Human Services. Ms Ng said VLA also held free legal information sessions on child support at community group meetings. For details phone 1300 792 387 on weekdays between 8.45am and 5.15pm. More information on child support is at www.legalaid.vic.gov.au.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… FORMER Journal employee Valerie Bravo (nee King) was delighted to read columnist Jack Johnson’s recollections of early Dandenong. Valerie was born in Dandenong in 1952 and started her newspaper career at the Journal when she was 16 at the Scott Street office. “In those days the Journal was a family and I have great memories of Marg Stork, John Woods, Don Brown, Mrs Midgely, Arthur Smith, Hugh Buggy, Old Lou, who melted the metal for the press and worked out the back in the dungeon, Ron McKenzie (production), Des Gillick and many more,“ wrote Valerie. “My husband and I met at The Journal and have now been married for 42 years. “I don’t live in Dandenong now but I am very proud of my family’s pioneering history to the market town. “In the late 1920s my father, with his parents, six brothers and four sisters, lived in a big old house where Dandenong Plaza stand now (which was opposite the old cattle market). “With their team of Clydesdales they built many of the roads around Dandenong. “So, anyway, thanks for the memories.”

DANDENONG crooner Frank Nichol’s tilt at fame hit an unexpected hurdle last October. On the eve of his audition for Australia’s Got Talent, Frank, 88, was struck down by trigeminal neuralgia, which landed him in hospital unable to sing. A successful audition would have made Frank the popular reality television show’s oldest ever contestant. Undeterred, Frank said he will give getting on the show another shot next year. "I was disappointed but I won't give up. Next year I will be nearly 90." Frank is no stranger to television. He won the Red Faces segment on Hey Hey It’s Saturday and walked away with $6000 from Family Feud. And what was Frank planning to sing at this thwarted audition? Elvis Presley’s Are You Lonesome Tonight. HERE’S a bright idea to cheer up some of central Dandenong’s empty spaces.

Greater Dandenong councillor Peter Brown has sprouted the idea of a pop-up sunflower park to beautify the vacant lot at Cadle Lane. In the past, an old hospital site in Moe had been transformed into a spectacular 2.6 kilometre spiral of sunflowers. Food for thought. IS THE price of going to the council-owned Dandenong Oasis gym getting a bit much? Greater Dandenong councillor Sean O’Reilly says the $25 price for a casual gym session compares badly to cheaper-priced private gyms. He said the council should price its gyms to maximise participants. “It’s not all about the bucks, it’s also about the bellies.” SOME more welcome news for road safety around schools. After much lobbying from Greater Dandenong Council, VicRoads has agreed to a 40km/h school speed zone on Chandler Road outside Chandler Park Primary School. The temporary static speed signs are expected to go in early February; VicRoads will apply for funding for electronic variable speed limit signs in the future. It follows the long, successful campaign as reported in the Journal last week - to reduce an 80km/h section of Princes Highway outside Dandenong High School to 60km/h. THIS week one of our Berwick News journalists had an interesting foray into Greater Dandenong politics, filling in as a reporter at the Dandenong council meeting. He was very pleased to see a number of sandwiches set on the media table, something that never occurs at Casey Council which he normally covers. The sandwiches were so impressive that one of the Dandenong councillors even came over to the media table to see if there were any that tickled her fancy.

Australia Day 2016

Emergency saves station By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS TWO years ago, senior CFA officials didn’t expect Noble Park’s fire brigade to survive. The membership was so low that the 87-yearold brigade was often bypassed when there were callouts in the local area and the station briefly shut down. But now the brigade is thriving thanks to a successful recruitment drive that embraced the suburb’s culturally diverse demographics. The drive’s architects, Matthew Pond and First Lieutenant Andrew South, were awarded Greater Dandenong’s multiculturalism award on Australia Day. Mr South said it was clear to the station’s predominantly white Anglo-Saxon males that membership was on the wane, down to just 14 members. It was also clear a new approach was needed to attract Noble Park’s new majority of overseasborn residents. Many were not used to the idea of volunteerism or had misconceptions that emergency services were hotbeds of corruption. Another impediment was that English was not the first language of choice for many Noble Park residents. “The main thing was education - going out there and lowering barriers,” Mr South said. “If we didn’t change anytime soon, the bridge wouldn’t be there any longer.” Mr Pond, the station’s support officer, said the brigade enlisted help from the Red Cross on how to reach out to potential recruits. AMES provided English-language classes to help get the recruits trained and job-ready. After two years of hard work and long nights, the station has been “refreshed” and feels more part of the local community, Mr Pond said. Its volunteer staff has leapt to more than 50 and its reliability and capabilities are rated at a high level.

Andrew South, left, and Matthew Pond, right, receive their award from Greater Dandenong Mayor Heang Tak. 149525 Picture: GARY SISSONS The recruitment methods have become a prototype for other emergency services in the state. “There’s satisfaction that we’ve turned it around,” Mr Pond said.

“We now stand on our own two feet and are a leader. “Needless to say, it’s been a complete surprise to a number of people.

“A lot of people had given up on Noble Park station.” Those who would like to volunteer or donate to Noble Park CFA are asked to phone 9546 6618.

Australia Day 2016

Passport to help refugees By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A FORMER refugee who fled the Taliban in Afghanistan has dedicated himself to helping others in a similar plight. Hayatullah Rahimi, 35, was awarded Greater Dandenong’s leadership award on Australia Day for his advocacy on refugee and asylum seeker issues, as well as supporting members of the Hazara community. For his first three years in Australia Mr Rahimi battled on a temporary protection visa, worked in a factory and postponed study due to being denied a welfare safety net, services or HECS subsidy. He gained permanent residency in 2010, has since studied a social work honours degree and works as a case manager supporting asylum seekers and refugees. In short, he knows what new arrivals are going through and speaks up for them on national and international media. The Dandenong activist argues that

the temporary protection visa system should be scrapped. “We don’t issue the permanent protection visa to people who come by boat. They argue they are jumping the queue. “I would say they don’t have access to government papers because they have been persecuted by the government of the day (in their homeland).” In Mr Rahimi’s own case, he asks how he was expected to get a valid passport from the Taliban to leave overseas. Seeking help at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’s office requires a hazardous trip to Kabul. “There is a lot of evidence that they are stopped and killed by the Taliban.” Mr Rahimi said it can be frustrating that many people and organisations, including the Federal Government, don’t listen to his arguments on behalf of people who are demonised as “illegal”, “threats” and “burdens”. “In my experience they are genuine refugees seeking asylum to Australia.

Hayatullah Rahimi is giving back to his new home. 149412 “We contribute a lot to Australian society.” Other Australia Day award winners included Tracey Walden (Volunteer of

Noble Park Football Club secretary Tracey Walden was named the City of Greater Dandenong’s Volunteer of the Year.

Australia Day 2016

Reasons for celebrations AN ENTHUSIASTIC crowd celebrated many nations within our nation at an Australia Day festival at Dandenong Park. Australian and Aboriginal flags were waved in the crowd during a diversity of live music, dancing, food and rides, topped off with night fireworks. Councillor Sean O’Reilly said it was estimated more than half of the

spectators came from outside Greater Dandenong, attracted to celebrating “Australian multiculturalism in full bloom”. “People say that Australia’s success is largely built on multiculturalism. “The large crowd shows that the event is a highlight in the local area on Australia Day.”

AFFORDABLE BEACHSIDE GEM BUYERS will have to hurry to secure a slice of the affordable beachfront lifestyle on offer at Phillip Island’s Woolamai House with the upcoming final release of 22 allotments in stage two. Blocks starting from as little as $225,000 are located just steps from the pristine beach of Cape Woolamai and buyers have been eager to secure what is one of the most affordable and, until now, best-kept Victorian coastal secrets. The project’s final stage will comprise only 22 lots where buyers can enjoy the same benefits afforded by the multimillion-dollar lifestyle in the likes of Portsea, Sorrento and Torquay for just a fraction of the cost. Woolamai House hosted a fun day with a swag of fun family activities to enjoy while providing buyers with the chance to secure one of these great coastal lots on offer. Some of the activities visitors enjoyed included a jumping castle, face painting, free barbecue, Californian baja-style nachos, ice-cream, and light entertainment.

Woolamai House sales agent Greg Price this was a truly a one-of-kind lifestyle opportunity that was not to be missed. “The combination of a beach lifestyle and stunning location, coupled with fantastic affordability, offers great buying value and we really encourage those interested in a beach lifestyle to call in and check out what the project has to offer. “On 16 January at our release event we truly expected strong interest in the lots on offer and we really encourage everyone to call in and not miss out,” he said. “Buyers first hand see the incredible value in Phillip Island with other coastal hotspots such as Sorrento, Portsea and Torquay often pricing out buyers keen to secure a fantastic coastal lifestyle,” Mr Price said. Lots range from 504 to 930 square metres and start from as little as $225,000. The Final Release Fun Day was held on 16 January at Grofam Court, Cape Woolamai. SALE CARES FOR KIDS Buy Property Direct and Mainline Developments have partnered with Menzies Caring for Kids by donating a newly constructed luxury home in Langwarrin to raise funds for ongoing community work. Menzies Caring for Kids is a non-profit organisation which supports young people who can no longer live with their natural families. Founded in 1865 and established in Frankston in 1901, Menzies Caring for Kids has provided a high standard of support for young people in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula region. Through funding and partnerships Menzies Caring for Kids equips these people with the life skills they need to lead safe, independent and fulfilled lives. Menzies Caring for Kids is run by a dedicated committee of volunteers and therefore all resources and donations received are committed to the sole purpose of helping others. In a joint effort between Buy Property Direct and Mainline Developments, the Menzies Caring for Kids Charity House Auction plans to raise awareness of this worthy cause and, more importantly, raise much-needed money to continue working in the local bayside community. All the proceeds of the auction funds will extend work started among a coalition of Frankston North schools, providing paediatric and occupational therapy to minimise the disadvantage on students who might not normally be able to access these health services. It is the first project of its type to be operating in a school and is proving to be an outstanding success, with statistical and anecdotal evidence highlighting early benefits for the schools, students and their families.

Mainline Developments completed construction on the four-bedroom, two-bathroom home in January. The new property features a spacious double car garage, entertaining alfresco area, generous master en suite, fully landscaped gardens and host of full turnkey inclusions, making this ideal for a prospective buyer who wants to move straight in. Buy Property Direct managing director David Brewster praised Menzies Caring for Kids for its important work. “It’s a great initiative and it’s been outstanding to see the number of trades and suppliers get on board to help us achieve the project,” he said. “Every dollar from the auction will be

retained by the charity, so it’s a great opportunity for one lucky real estate buyer to give back to Menzies and the local community.” An overwhelming number of supporting partners have volunteered to help the cause with more than 35 individual media, planning and construction businesses partnering the project. Menzies Caring for Kids will commit every dollar raised from the sale to assist young people living in the area. Buy Property Direct will be marketing the property for auction in the $450,000 plus range. Menzies president Kevin Johnson welcomed the funds. “Menzies Caring for Kids is an

organisation dedicated to supporting young people in Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula. “We are over the moon with what these guys are doing for the kids we support. “As a result of this particular project we will be able to support disadvantaged kids who, through no fault of their own, do not get the medical attention they require. “Menzies cares about kids!” The property at 48 Tamara Circuit, Langwarrin, will be sold through a public auction at noon on Saturday 27 February and is open for inspection every Saturday and Sunday from 11.30am to noon until the auction. A full list of all supporting partners can be found on the project website.

Zest for life an inspiration By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS DEDICATED charity worker Carma Keast, OAM, will be long remembered for her compassion and humility. Mrs Keast lived in Dandenong for much of her 90 years, most of that lived with a long-held zest for tennis, crafts, cards, flower arranging and volunteering for Trinity Uniting Church. About 180 people attended her funeral on 27 January at the church she so often festooned with beautiful floral arrangements on Sundays. Her daughter Pauline Kilpatrick told the gathering that the “inspirational” Mrs Keast “pursued everything with passion, dedication, motivation and perseverance”. “Your love, compassion and laughter has left a remarkable everlasting memory for all of those in your life.” Mrs Keast was recognised for her enormous community service with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2014. “From my humble beginnings, I never thought

I’d get such an award,” she told the Journal at the time. “I’ve always thought I’d received help from the Lord above for trying to make the world a better place.” Her volunteering included being tennis club

secretary up until her late seventies, serving at Dandenong Hospital kiosk and being a longserving church council member. She created more than 30 rugs for Black Saturday bushfire survivors, as well as getting behind numerous fund-raisers for the church,

Legacy and the Cancer Council. Up until the ripe age of 78, she played more than 500 games of tennis with both Trinity and Presbyterian tennis clubs. Mrs Keast was also a champion on the tennis court and played bowls up until six years ago. Giving seemed “natural”, the former winner of Greater Dandenong’s Good Neighbour Award once told the Journal. “Smiles make such a difference to make a better world for everyone,” she said. “I try to smile a lot. Since I’ve been walking around a lot recently, it’s surprising how many stop and smile or say hello.” Mrs Keast died on 20 January six months after being struck by pneumonia. Through that time she maintained her humour, joking about the availability of parking at Monash Medical Centre as she boarded an ambulance, Ms Kilpatrick said. She is survived by three children, 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Migrant built bridges in the community by always helping others By LACHLAN MOORHEAD

Pietro 'Peter' De Cinque was loved by his family and the Dandenong community.

FOR 50 years Peter De Cinque called Dandenong home. The Italian migrant - who passed away on Tuesday 19 January at the age of 82 after a long battle with motor neurone disease - was loved not only by his family but by the local community, which he always held dear to his heart. An active member of the Catholic Church who ran for the local council in 1986, Pietro - his birth name - first came to Australia from Italy in 1951 in the wake of World War II. Peter’s son, Tony, spoke to Star News about his father’s decision to leave Europe to start another life. “He came out when he was 19 from Italy, after it was ravaged by the Second

World War, to build a new life and start a family in a safer environment than what Europe had been,” Tony said. “He went out to Morwell to live with his uncle and got a job on the railway building bridges.” Not long after Peter was married by proxy and his wife, Nicolletta, soon joined him in Australia in 1955. The couple built a life for themselves and their three children - Tony, Robert and Anna - in the Dandenong area, beginning in Bowman Street, Noble Park. “It was just cow paddocks back then, the road wasn’t even made,” Tony recalled. Peter soon got a job with Rocla Pipes, a company he worked at for 27 years, as his affinity for the Dandenong

region grew and stayed a part of him long after he moved to Safety Beach in his later years. Peter was a founding Parishioner at St Gerard’s Catholic Church in Dandenong North and also started up an Italian chapter of the St Vincent de Paul Society. “It was everything to him. He spent most of his life in the Dandenong area and he would always gravitate back to it,” Tony said. “He’d run New Year’s Eve dances and he was always running charity fundraisers.” Tony said his father’s affinity to Dandenong and the surrounding suburbs could be linked to his farming roots, having grown up in rural areas in Italy.

“He had a close connection to the country because he was born on a farm and Dandenong was a gateway to Gippsland,” he said. As he raised his children, Peter worked three jobs to “put down a foundation for our family and future generations”. “He would never buy anything if he couldn’t afford it,” Tony said. “Just reflecting on it, I’ve never really thought about it but Dad was always selfless, always doing things for others - he’d give the shirt off his back to someone in need. “He was the perfect person but you don’t think about it ’cause he’s your Dad.”

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Grant gets to the pointe By CASEY NEILL DANCE teacher Michelle Johnson was floored to receive a Greater Dandenong Business Grant on 10 December. Thanks to the $8000 helping hand her new Melbourne Ballet School studio soon will be, too. “We are putting in flooring which is called tarkett, which is a dancespecific vinyl and what the Australian Ballet dances on,” she said. “It’s a state-of-the-art dance floor, which we wouldn’t have been able to do without the grant.” Michelle also receives business mentoring as part of the grant. She started Melbourne Ballet School in 2011. “I was teaching in South Melbourne but I stopped to open my own class when I had a family,” she said. “When I first started back I did one class a week and now we have 45 classes. “Each year it’s doubled in numbers and we were growing out of the community centres that we were working in and needed our own permanent place to grow further. “That’s why we’re here.” “Here” is a space in Summit Road, Noble Park North. “We had classes at Nazareth, at the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre and at the Jan Wilson Centre,” Michelle said. “I wanted something in the middle if we could. “I was looking in Dandenong, Noble Park, Keysborough and Springvale for the perfect location. “It’s perfect. We’ve got the two studios that we can run at the same time so we’ve doubled the amount of classes. “There’s me and three other teachers. “One of the teachers is also a singing teacher so she’ll be doing singing lessons as well.” She’ll also use the extra space to introduce classes for teens and adults, and a boys-only hip hop class. “We have boys interested but when there’s no other boys in the class... ” she said. “Once you’ve got some it grows.” Melbourne Ballet School offers ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD) exams. “I danced for 20 years and then I have been teaching for 17 years - was teaching and dancing at the same time,” Michelle said. “I always just loved to dance, and the variety of doing the ballet and the

DANIEL Cheng hopes to see lots of little monkeys running around at this year’s Lunar New Year festival in Springvale. “It is the year of monkey - so I want to see monkey face paint on everyone,” said Mr Cheng, president of the Springvale Asian Business Assocation. It will be the annual new year extravaganza’s 24th year in Springvale and Mr Cheng said the festival was expected to bring in more than 70,000 people. “People come for the food, flag raising ceremony, lion dancing and fire crackers,” he said.

“This year we will have the national anthem sung by the Melbourne Chinese children’s choir.” The monkeying around theme of 2016 is meant to bring good luck to everybody. And the day will also bring together other Asian cultures, including a dance routine by a New Zealand act. “This year there will be four MCs, all speaking different languages including English, Cambodian, Chinese and Vietnamese,” Mr Cheng said. On the day festival goers will be treated to a Japanese drumming performance and

Cambodian songs, along with more than 70 stalls of food and merchandise. Mr Cheng said he is excited to taste some of the new rice flavours that will be launched at the free new year party and take in the lively atmosphere of the day. Dandenong Mayor Sean O’Reilly is expected to grace the stage and Victoria Police officers will raise the Australian flag. The official ceremonies will kick off at 12.30pm but stalls will be open from 10am on Sunday 7 February in Buckingham Street, Springvale.

Pride in achievements By LACHLAN MOORHEAD ON THE Doveton stage a group of children held two-sided flags - one with Australian colours and the other with Indian colours. The moment was a poignant recognition that Australia Day falls on the same date as India’s Republic Day - 26 January. The 2016 Doveton Australia Day celebrations, held at Recreation Reserve, were hosted by the Melbourne Malayalee Federation, an Indian community group which used the event as an opportunity to celebrate both cultures. Melbourne Malayalee Federation president Dr Shaji Varghese said he and the other members loved being a part of Australia. “We are proud to be Australian and to be part of the group and we wanted to be part of the Australia Day celebrations,” he said. “It’s a new country, it’s multiculturalm, so people from all over the world are here and I want to be a part of that.” Many people of varying nationalities attended the Doveton event, including Australia Day Ambassador and former Victorian Premier John Cain, Casey councillor Damien Rosario and outgoing Casey Citizen of the Year Brooke McGowan-Grills. The guests were treated to a range of entertaining acts, including Indian dancing, children singing, and tunes from the Cranbourne Lions Concert Band. It was a display of multiculturalism and councillor Damien Rosario, who represents the River Gum Ward, made this clear in his speech. “Doveton is a wonderful example of modern day Australia,” he said. “Our diverse and multicultural community reflects our nation’s commitment to welcome all people and to-

echoed Cr Rosario’s sentiments. “It’s good to see that an event of this kind in the City of Casey is today largely being handled, promoted, managed by the Indian community and that reflects the nature of our multicultural society and it’s good to see,” he said. Mr Cain also used his appearance at the Doveton barbecue to remind the crowd of Australia’s “shortcomings” in helping and respecting the indigenous community, and called for change. “We can look back with pride at what we’ve been able to achieve ... we can also look back on this day, and I think we should, and acknowledge some shortcomings,” Mr Cain said. “To me, arguably the most obvious shortcoming is despite our capacity

to receive and acknowledge and look after a wide range of migrants, settlers from all over the world, we have failed badly in looking after the original, Aboriginal people. “They’re state of life reflects our failures. The life expectancy, the number of Aboriginal people in our jails, we let them down badly and more needs to be done as a continuing affection as we journey through these years of 2000. “The other thing we can look back and say we haven’t done as well as we might is caring for and receiving refugees. Because that’s the reason this society began and we need to do better to recognise our shortcomings over the last 10 or 15 years in not receiving as warmly as we should those who are

Honour for a top Panther By JARROD POTTER MANY elite sportspeople have come through the City of Greater Dandenong but the city’s inaugural Sports Hall of Fame inductee is better known for his work off the field. In a sign of how important those doing the behind-the-scenes work are to the city, Dandenong Cricket Club president Michael Findlay was named the first entrant to the Sport Hall of Fame at Australia Day celebrations on Tuesday. The Panthers’ life-member was shocked to hear his name called but was extremely humbled at his inclusion in the pantheon of local sports achievers. “I was very surprised about receiving the award,” Findlay said. “There are a lot of people who have put a lot into sport in Dandenong and the area so to be the first is quite an honour.” From Findlay’s playing-days with Doveton North - as a “left-arm medium bowler and down the order bat” as he puts it - before becoming the club’s president, secretary and a junior representative on the DDCA committee, Findlay eventually found his way to Shepley Oval and has since become an integral part of the Panthers’ community. His time at Dandenong started in the early ’90s as he captained the fourth XI and mentored the juniors finding their way in the elite club. From there he was an important part of the club’s Dowling Shield side - featuring a few familiar names in Peter Siddle and Cameron White - as the side began its march towards its inaugural premiership in 2006/07. But throughout it all, Findlay takes his greatest

Dandenong Cricket Club president Michael Findlay became the first inductee to the City Picture: GARY SISSONS of Greater Dandenong's Sports Hall of Fame. 149579 joy from seeing juniors come through the ranks as well as watching all sports in Greater Dandenong flourish.

“I suppose, generally, it’s watching the young kids coming through and working hard to achieve promotion and reach their potential,” Findlay said.

“The early Dowling Shield with Cameron White, Peter Siddle - seeing Darren Pattinson get a game for England and James (Pattinson) coming through - knew him from when he was five. “The premierships in 2007 and 2011 - couldn’t beat the feelings there.” With the city at the forefront of both elite and recreational sport in a number of sports, Findlay wants to see Dandenong continue to establish exceptional standards for the next generation of men and especially women. “Dandenong is pretty well represented in all sports - it’s been a focus for sport since I was a kid,” Findlay said. “We’ve got top teams in soccer, basketball, the Stingrays and us (Dandenong Cricket Club). “I think if we can focus on bringing sport tor everyone and sport for the elite in Dandenong we can give everyone the opportunity to work right through to their full potential in sports. “All sports have to concentrate on putting more time into the young people and developing them - women’s sport in particular has been highlighted and if they put more resources into that. “The Stingrays have done a great job getting their girls’ team up and running, the Dandenong Women’s doing a good job in increasing the number of girls playing - I think we need to play a bigger role in that in future years.” He wanted to thank his great mentors throughout the years - Frank Holohan, Ross Hepburn, Ray Evans especially his mum Joan, as well as the City of Greater Dandenong for ensuring the club’s facilities at Shepley Oval and Wilson Oval remained top-notch for the club’s future champions.

Third time and still lucky By JARROD POTTER ONE team is enough for most footy coaches - let alone what Scott Gowans has embarked upon in 2016. Adding to an already jampacked football schedule, the Longwarry and Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls Academy coach is now at the helm of his third side - the Vic Country Youth Girls. He’s made the switch from Vic Metro Youth Girls assistant to taking the reins of Vic Country for the 2016 AFL Youth Girls National Championships, held in May across Melbourne. “I was quite excited when I was announced and just looking forward to the challenge as it’s a big challenge,” Gowans said. While it’s weird to leave the Metro ranks - and face the prospect of coaching against some of his Stingrays squad members and former Vic Metro players Gowans thought it was the right time to take on the new role. “The accepting thing was I got a lot of supportive messages from the Metro girls - that makes me feel a little better but obviously when we play Metro it will be a little bit funny,” Gowans said. “I’ve also learned heaps off (Vic Metro coach) Wayne (Siekman) - he’s very structured in time management and game plans ... and if you’ve got a particular game plan, you’re recruiting girls to play to that plan, not just picking the best 27 girls to play footy.” Numbers have already been impressive for the Country con-

Scott Gowans has been selected as Vic Country Youth Girls' head coach. 146957 tingent as the first round of tryouts had 55 elite players attend. Gowans admits Vic Country’s winless national championship record is his first port of call and hopes to bring the best metropolitan strategies to the regional squad to turn the form around. “The big difference between Country and Metro was the professionalism,” Gowans said. “Country was a little bit, I suppose, had a country feel to

it ... just not as professional, but I’m going to bring in that professionalism and metro feel - they’ll be a lot more serious. “They haven’t won a game yet at the nationals - they’re 0-8 - and I want to be able to win our first game.” It all boils down to the players he can put on the park and Gowans thinks the rest of the competition is set for a surprise as his Vic Country contingent has advanced drastically.

WITH 2015 in the rear-view mirror, the New Year is well and truly under way for the Dandenong Stingrays. The highs and lows of last season - with seven drafted into the AFL contrasting against a preliminary final loss - hope to be exceeded by the next batch of up-and-coming Stingrays. Pre-season training was taken up a gear this week as Dandenong traded Shepley Oval for an indoor run-around at ICON Arena, Doveton, as coach Craig Black and his staff start to whittle down the list. With 83 footballers currently doing a pre-season, there’s a lot to do before the first match on 26 March, but Black believes the list will be strong heading

into the new campaign. “I think we’ve got a really even group,” Black said. “We keep setting the standards and the old saying ‘if you do the same thing, you’ll get the same result’ - so as a coaching group we’re challenging each other - and the players who were on our list last year, who are now our 18 year olds, are trying to lift the standards too.” AFL Academy tandem Josh Battle and Myles Poholke have barely stopped since the end of the TAC Cup season, going into pre-season training at the AFL level before heading across to America. “We’ve been pretty lucky with the academy kids,” Black said. “Josh Battle got to spend a couple of weeks at St Kilda and

Myles Poholke spent a couple of weeks at Essendon preChristmas then the two of them went on the academy trip across to Florida. “They’re all back now and I think we’ve got a few kids who haven’t been involved in our program before that are setting really good standards.” Battle, Reece Piper and Jordan Stewart lead the names from the south eastern area, but Black said there was plenty of time left for a few more names to bob up - especially with intra-club matches starting next weekend. “First intra-club practice game is next Sunday 7 February, so it’s a really good opportunity for the boys - especially the guys we haven’t seen play a lot,” Black said.

By JARROD POTTER TAKING a rare representative hat-trick, the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) showed it’s still the region to beat with a 12-run grand final victory over VTCA South. Continuing the stellar run which has seen the association with six of the last eight Neil Wright Shield grand finals, the Dandy boys shone once again on Sunday morning. It was not as effortless as its round robin matches, but the DDCA endured the best of VTCA South’s batting and bowling to hold aloft the shield for the third season in a row. “They always take it very seriously the DDCA - we always plan to win it but never believe we’ll do it easily,” DDCA under-21 coach Craig Slocombe said. “We always just want to show the other associations we’re serious about improving our competition, with not just overseas talent but local kids too. “The boys were really good - we didn’t have any out and out superstars, but this year the team gelled really well and that’s what probably won us the title.” After early wickets forced him to curtail his natural game, Hallam’s Jagveer Hayer (67no) effectively carried his bat and became the rocksolid batsman the rest of the DDCA order could lean on. With Springvale South’s Cameron Scott (33) holding on against the VTCA quicks, the DDCA duo quickly turned 2/11 into 3/92, but after then Hayer had to search for support. The experienced middle order failed to fire as Travis D’Souza (10), Clay McCartney (4) and the skipper Jordan Hammond (9) couldn’t rouse much on the offensive front. It left the scoring to Hayer, who continued his prolific VMCU campaign - knocking in his second half-century. “We lost two early wickets - went in to bat and

Dandenong District Cricket Association claimed its third Neil Wright Shield in as many attempts after a dogged win on Sunday morning. Picture: PETER BARNES thought the ball would get a bit wet,” Slocombe said. “We moved Cam Scott in at four to see off the new ball and cash in - and he did that. “The partnership along with Jaggers (Hayer) was the one of the innings ... Jaggers batted the whole innings and was the main reason we got 166. “He didn’t take many risks and wasn’t pretty, but from the team point of view that was what we needed ... he had to bat for the team and 166 for us was good when it was definitely a seaming wicket.” The response was dictated by VTCA South’s young Englishman Tom Smith (70) - who survived a second-ball edge that the umpire didn’t pick up. The tall seamers finished the job after Smith’s departure with skipper Hammond (1/36), Matt Wetering (3/26) and Mitch Shirt (3/19) running through the rest of the tail to halt the Turf association’s innings at 154 and give the DDCA the premiership. “We needed to get their Englishman Smith out - we got him snicked second ball and didn’t go

out - probably the only person who didn’t hear it was the umpire,” Slocombe said. “He got 70 and went out with the score on 99 - that’s how dominant a player he is. “Jordan Hammond came on and got a wicket and Shirt came back on and got three bowled Wetering was brilliant again at the start and Jaggers was brilliant and got two wickets.” Slocombe wanted to thank those in the DDCA who helped get the team up and ready - especially Ray Nicholls, Steve Richards, Bill Ford, Michael Hawking, Neil Shaw and Peter the former coach Peter Lindsay. Big bash dreams evaporate for Bloods By JARROD POTTER DREAMS of playing on the MCG will have to wait another year for Springvale South after the DDCA powerhouse was bundled out of the race to the Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash championship. The Bloods’ campaign ended with a Victorian top-eight finish after falling 20 runs short of Mornington Peninsula powerhouse Sorrento last Sunday. Springvale South couldn’t stop the likes of opposing captain Corey Harris (32) and Robert Wilson (32) getting off the leash early as the Sharks’ tandem belted a few sixes over the fence in the adjoining Springvale Light Steamers track. Its 43-run stand was brought to an end by Craig Berger (1/22) and from there the scoring chances dried

up for the visitors, but similar problems plagued the Bloods’ knock. Michael Vandort (20) and Nathan King (23) were the Bloods’ best as the Sharks mauled the middle order. “It wasn’t conducive to batting - the wicket, dare I say it, it wasn’t conducive for stroke playing which in a twenty20 game you’d expect it to be,” Bloods captain Craig Slocombe said. “They tightened things up and were ahead of the run rate, of course, but at the end of the day they worked out the conditions. “Slow conditions slowed the ball up and made it hard to score and field. “We played a few rash shots and they had just a few older heads that prevailed. “I think we were pretty even with them but it just wasn’t our day.”

Rangers rattle the Spirit By JARROD POTTER WNBL - ROUND 15 IT WAS do or die in many ways on Saturday night as Dandenong prevailed in an 82-74 victory over Bendigo. The eight-point victory ensured three important items were ticked off the Rangers’ WNBL checklist. Dandenong now has a one-game buffer inside the top four as well as bringing the Rangers within striking distance of the top-two and a home final. But most importantly, the successful outing secured the series-win over the Spirit who is right in the hunt for a finals spot as well - a crucial success that could prove important in determining who will advance. The hard-fought triumph was inspired by Dandenong’s efforts that can’t be recorded on the stats-sheet. Physical pressure, powerful defensive presses, diving on any ground ball and generally hustling Bendigo through their set-plays; it was a night where Dandenong had an overwhelming say in the course of the game. It wasn’t just physicality favouring the Rangers for a change as the shooting game was just as dominant. Dandenong rattled the cage in particular through the second term - building an 11-point lead on the back of Steph Cumming (23 points, eight rebounds) and Annalise Pickrel (18 points) effortlessly finding the basket. Another to step up - in arguably her best WNBL performance yet - was Lauren Scherf (14 points). The 20-year-old centre terrorised the Spirit’s talls in tandem with comeback queen Jacinta Kennedy (eight points, 10 rebounds). Joy Burke and Gabe Richards had to contend with the Scherf-Kennedy combination as well

Dandenong centre Lauren Scherf amazed the crowd, racking up 14 points as she helped Picture: JARROD POTTER her side claim an eight-point win over Bendigo. 149626 as Sara Blicavs (16 points) crashing the key and turning the game on its head time and time again. Despite injuring herself in the second half, Bendigo forward Kelsey Griffin (22 points) soldiered on to keep the Spirit alive. Griffin started the third term with five points in 50 seconds and reeling in three dogged rebounds. Belinda Snell’s three would push Bendigo

ahead, but from there on the tables turned back in Dandenong’s favour. The visitors kept in the contest until the final minute, but a brilliant Blicavs’ defence-splitting assist found Pickrel free under the ring to finally break the Spirit. “The girls responded exactly how they should,” Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson said.

“I know we got away with the win against the Boomers on Monday night... it’s not about Adelaide beating us, it’s just about the performance we put forward. “I think they responded beautifully tonight - it was such a big win for our club and I couldn’t be more proud of how they’ve stepped up. “Bendigo is a quality unit and it’s no secret that they’ve been playing pretty well but we showed we match up with them pretty well.” Seeing the plans click together and pay dividends is especially rewarding with the injuries still mounting for Dandenong. But tall tandem Alex Bunton (knee) and Al Downie (calf) should return to the court soon, further bolstering the line-up. “It’s all about following game plans and they’ve just been so focused this week with their defence,” Anderson said. “For our first year together, the age that we’re in and such a new group I know I keep saying it but I couldn’t be more proud of them.” The win takes the Rangers within striking distance of Perth and Townsville in the top-two, but with a tough schedule ahead Anderson is not gazing towards finals just yet. We’ve got a lot of work left to do - still have four really tough games left and it doesn’t get any easier,” Anderson said.” “I think we made huge steps forward to go back to what we do really well and made Bendigo play our game and that’s what I’m most pleased about. “The next three games are going to be so hard - we’ve got to go to Sydney and within 12 hours play Canberra. “That’s going to be a really hard trip, then we’ve got to leave the following Thursday to go to Townsville for a Friday night game.

Noble Park charges towards VSDCA top six By JARROD POTTER VSDCA - ROUND 10 (Day 2) FINALS dreams were kept alive with a percentageboosting win as Noble Park’s (5/284) all-round effort was enough to account for Endeavour Hills (124 and 1/52). After belting nearly 300 last week, via half-centuries from Sanjeewa De Silva (72), Mevan Fernando (64no) and Jake Richardson (65), Noble Park completed the picture by searing through the visitors’ first innings before a late crack at an outright. Bits and bobs made the entirety of the Eagles’ batting initiative as Ben Law (21) tried to hold together the top order. The rout began in earnest after Sacheen Paramesh (2/29) claimed opener Dayle Olson (9), triggering an almighty collapse. The Eagles lost 5/21 as Issy Perera (5/46) spun his way into the match alongside wseamer Rizan Mawzoon (2/16). The Bulls’ charge dried up the runs while the wickets flowed freely. Perennial all-rounder Richard Saniga (35no) held up his end of the bargain as per usual - smashing a few runs late to chew up the overs and in part prevent any outright shenanigans. Sending the visitors back in, the quick second innings scalp of Zach Allen (0) gave the Bulls’ a glimmer of outright hope. Despite some beguiling spin from both ends via Perera and Mevan Fernando, in the end the Bulls’ skipper would call it a day and hake hands after 16 overs as Law (32no) and Olson (18no) remainded rock-solid throughout the the final hour. Noble Park skipper Luke Wintle thought the side’s recent form - taking four wins on the trot - has been the true reflection of his side’s potential and not the slump through the middle of the VSDCA North/East season. “We’ve got to keep winning to stay alive - we’re still out of the six so every week is really important to us,” Wintle said. “We didn’t play well enough early - didn’t have enough runs and our bowling wasn’t as consistent as we’d hoped, so certainly the last five matches we’ve been much happier with how we’re performing.” With bowling options up and down the order, Wintle was thrilled to see everyone get among the wickets in a deservingly emphatic win. “The boys bowled pretty well in areas,” Wintle said. “The wicket was a pretty good one considering all the rain we’ve had this week, so for the quicks to bowl well early and for Issy (Marasinghe Perera) to spin them out and get five-for was a great effort.” The win brings the Bulls within three points of the top six and Noble Park’s must-win sprint to the end of the

Endeavour Hills sits 13th and will head to Plenty Valley on Saturday. DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 9 The only Turf 1 match to get under way saw Dandenong West (167) post a solid target, especially considering the horrendous conditions this week that hit Greaves Reserve. The Hawks sunk their talons into the Bulls’ top order as only Sam Bracey (58) stood tall. His resilient knock was supported down the line by Shaun Weir (46) and Peter Atkinson (25no). For the visitors, Will Whyte (3/25) and Jordan Hammond (2/34) troubled the hosts the most. Hallam Kalora Park (0/6). The remaining Turf 1 clashes have been rescheduled as one-dayers. VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 15 (Day 2) It will be tough work defending a meagre target, but Dandenong (157) has no other option. Taking a loss from its Round 15 clash against Melbourne Uni (0/27) will likely ending any remaining

chance Dandenong has of making the Victorian PremierCricket finals. After tons of rain lashed Melbourne this week, it was no surprise the hosts sent Dandenong in to bat. Working the singles about throughout a tricky new-ball period, the textbook strong-start from Panthers’ skipper Tom Donnell (30) and Brett Forsyth (15) one of few moments to smile about. The men from Shepley Oval had their middle order hacked apart quickly by the Melbourne Uni attack. Led by James Bett (5/34) and Steven Reid (4/35), the scholars put Dandenong into trouble fast as the Panthers lost the first five scalps for a scant 58. The resistance was led by James Nanopoulos (38) and David Alleyne (24), as the experienced tandem kept the scoreboard ticking over as best they could. but their wickets joined the procession soon after as the side lurched just past 150 on a tricky-day at the crease.

It’s a big year for miniroos STEELING themselves for the new NPL2 year ahead, Springvale White Eagles are set to add a few more junior sides to its stable this year.
