■ Rick gets back in the saddle after operation to help others...
Taking the reins By LACHLAN MOORHEAD
Rick Beeby with Gerry, one of the Riding for the Disabled horses. 149540 studying about the benefits of therapeutic riding, his passion for horses goes way back. “I sort of grew up in an area where there was a lot of horses, in Hornsby, New South Wales,” he said. “Then later on I worked as a jackaroo and a station-hand mustering and droving. “Then my oldest daughter became interested in horses. At one stage I had
three children doing pony club.” Rick’s daughters, Crystal and Mim, and his wife, Robyn, were at the Council Chambers last Tuesday night to watch their dad and husband receive the Australia Day award, an honour he didn’t expect to win but one he was thrilled with. “It’s always something I’ve loved doing - combining my love of horses with helping people who have disabilities,” Rick said.

Doveton was also recognised a second time at the Casey Australia Day Awards when the Doveton Show was named the Casey Community Event of the Year. This year’s Doveton Show attracted more than 27,000 visitors, with a variety of activities, displays and entertaining acts made available to the community. Joining Rick to receive council awards on Australia Day was the Casey
Citizen of the Year Cathy Wieckmann, the Casey Young Citizen of the Year Oliver Thomson, the Casey Sportsperson of the Year Chandlar Felton, and the Casey Non-resident of the Year Brianna Loves. The Casey Fundraising Event of the Year Award went to the Halloween Spooktacular Party, while Livvi’s Place Open Day and the Narre Warren Fire Brigade Open Day were given high commendations.

AFTER his back surgery, Rick Beeby knew he’d get better. But for those children and adults living with a disability, the 69-year-old knew theirs was a burden they would be carrying for the rest of their lives. This moment of understanding led Rick Beeby to Riding for the Disabled (RDA) at Doveton Myuna Farm, where he has volunteered for more than a decade. It’s his commitment to RDA that saw Rick, the Doveton Committee’s vice-president, awarded the Casey Senior Citizen of Year Award on Australia Day this month. “I used to drive trucks and I had some surgery done on my back which meant I had to give truck driving away, and I had to re-think what I was going to do for the rest of my life,” he said. “I think it was the fact that after surgery I was going to get better whereas a lot of people don’t, they have that disability and that’s it.” Rick’s involvement with the RDA has seen him cover every aspect of the program, including running coaching sessions for riders with disabilities, accompanying riders to competitions, co-ordinating volunteers, and collecting horse feed and repairing fences. Rick has helped enrich the lives of many kids, including a 10-year-old boy who was unable to walk until he joined RDA. “He’s a young fella who was not able to sit up straight because of a lack of core strength,” Rick said. “But he started riding and now he can weight bear and now he can walk. “At the start he couldn’t even sit up straight.” While his involvement with RDA has seen Rick immerse himself in

Resident curses over nature strip infestation By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS WEEDS have infested residential nature strips in Endeavour Hills due to a Casey Council road improvement project. Vic Cassol, who lives in the affected section in James Cook Drive, said his nature strip was exclusively filled with weeds and devoid of grass since the council dug it up and reseeded it in November. One of the weeds is a nastily long-spiked weed but the most virulent is thought to be the potentially deadly Paterson’s curse - a purple flowered, hairy stalked weed that has blanketed many pastures, roadsides and waterways in Australia. The latter has spread along James Cook Drive and into Mr Cassol’s front yard. According to Agriculture Victoria’s website, Paterson’s curse can invade naturally vegetated areas, suppress smaller plants and poison animals. Its pyrrolizidine alkaloids can cause cumulative chronic liver damage and sometimes death, the website stated. “It’s a weed that I’ve never seen around here before,” Mr Cassol said. After complaining to the council, Mr Cassol was visited by council staff but nothing has happened since. “They said don’t worry, we’ll fix it. “I’ve never complained before but the grass used to be so beautiful. When I see the weeds going up, I just can’t stand it.” During the council works, footpaths and gutter kerbing were replaced. Top soil and grass seed were then reinstated on nature strips.
Vic Cassol looking at his nature strip of suspected Paterson's Curse. 149507 Many of the affected nature strips in a 250-metre stretch between Matthew Flinders and Charles Green avenues are denuded or patchily covered in weeds. A scarce minority was regrassed successfully. Casey roads and construction manager Wayne Mack said the grass seed had “not grown as desired”. “Council is working with its contractor to reinstate the nature strips to the appropriate standard including removal of this common weed seen in the area, as well as re-seeding, to be completed in early March.”

A CAR wash automatic payment machine weighing 80 kilograms has been stolen from a Eumemmering drive-through. The change machine worth $20,000 was removed from the Select Car Wash on Princes Highway on Monday 25 January about 3.30am. Detective Senior Sergeant Rodney Maroney said it’s the first time something like this has happened in the area. “It was situated as you enter the automated car wash and I’d say a few men would be needed to carry it, probably needed a ute to transport it,” he said. “Change inside the machine could be $1000 in coins and notes but it’s the actual unit itself where the value is,” he said. “The offenders may discard it somewhere and if anyone sees it, we’d like them to contact police."
Roo bomb IT’S alleged the Hallam teenager charged in relation to a foiled Anzac Day terror plot had discussed painting the Islamic State symbol on a kangaroo, strapping it with explosives and letting it loose on police. The new information was contained in court documents discussed in the Supreme Court on Thursday 28 January and reported by various media outlets including the ABC. According to the ABC, 19-year-old Sevdet Besim pleaded not guilty to four charges relating to planning a terrorist act over the phone and internet in the lead-up to Anzac Day last year. Prosecutors withdrew another charge of conspiring to commit the attack. Besim allegedly used the internet to search Anzac Day celebrations in Dandenong and Melbourne. Star News reported in April last year on Besim’s arrest, following a tip-off from British police.

POLICE are searching for a man who ran from an Endeavour Hills jewellery store carrying a $4000 gold chain. It’s alleged the man entered the store in a shopping centre on the corner of Matthew Flinders Avenue and Heatherton Road on Tuesday 12 January, just after 4.15pm. After asking to see a number of jewellery pieces the Caucasian man requested to try on a 50cm gold chain. When the chain was handed over the
man with olive skin and blue eyes ran from the store and was last seen in the underground car park. Investigators have released an image of a man, described as being in his late 20s and unshaven, who they wish to speak to in relation to the theft. At the time of the theft the man was wearing black track pants, a T-shirt with ‘87’ printed on the back and was carrying a black bum bag over his shoulder. Police have also revealed the man in question had a distinctive tattoo of what

Fiery start for rookie By LACHLAN MOORHEAD “IT WAS one hell of a shotgun start.” Literally, it was like walking into hell. It was Matt Staple’s first day on the job as a staff firefighter at the Hallam CFA. He’d been there just five minutes before he was called out to a fully-involved house fire in Doveton. The 24-year-old went inside the burning wreck with his leading firefighter. Inside the building the temperature reached 500 degrees. “You can’t really top a house fire on your first day,” Matt said with a smile. “It’s one of those stories they tell everyone on recruits. Be prepared to get going from the very second you get on the station - so that’s what I did. “The construction of it really insulated it well. It was a pretty hot one. You just focus; I wasn’t freaking out or anything. “You just get in there and think about it later.” Matt may seem young for this line of work but he’s worked more than a little hard to gain the opportunity. Despite a few knock-backs by the CFA as he tried to become an employed member, Matt signed up as a volunteer down in the Latrobe Valley where he honed his craft, before applying again. “They really want to see perseverance,” Matt said. “There weren’t too many in my age group so they just want to make sure you’re the right person. “You could always just say there were people that were better than you at the time. “I didn’t take it too hard. I just

Matt Staple, 24, is the latest rookie at the Hallam CFA - and he's loving every minute of it. 148919 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS got back on the horse and pushed through and got there in the end.” Matt said most people who apply for the job had dreamed of being a firefighter, and he’s no different. “You work so hard for it,” he said. “And you finally get here and it’s like, this is awesome. So you throw everything at it, which can sometimes be a little bit too much, but that’s alright. “The learning curve doesn’t stop from there, it keeps going, which has been fantastic. “You just keep working, it doesn’t stop.” One of the men he worked with in the Latrobe Valley was Brendan
McKay - formerly of the Morwell CFA, now also at Hallam - who is more than a bit of mentor to Matt. “Each brigade’s got its own significant risks,” Brendan said. “Down in the Latrobe Valley the main aim of integrated stations is probably due to the power industry and protecting that asset down there. That’s the main reason we’re down there. “Up here (Hallam) we’re on the fringe of urban Melbourne and it’s just the call rate that forces permanent staff to be here. “The multitude of calls, the hours the calls are at, it’s a really big drain on the volunteer force and I’d argue, others might argue differently,
but I’d argue that it’s pretty hard for them to keep up with it.” The Hallam CFA receives 1800 to 2000 calls a year, around three times what Morwell was receiving, Brendan said. The Emergency Medical Response (EMR) program has also added to the call rate, with CFA firefighters now called out for medical support and required to administer CPR if they arrive before paramedics. “This job is about bettering yourself over the whole journey,” Brendan said. “Even guys that have been here for 30 years, they’re learning something every shift.”

Tasty Vietnamese treats are in the baguette By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS KASEY Pham and her partner Danny Tran saw a missing ingredient in Noble Park’s emerging foodie wonderland and pounced. Their Peddler Tuck Shop cafe opened six months ago with a variety of home-made Vietnamese and other Asian fusion-style baguettes. Ms Pham left her family’s Vietnamese restaurant two doors down to experiment with bold takes on classic flavours such as crackling pork belly, teriyaki chicken, poached chicken, and lemongrass pork patties. These are embedded with cos lettuce, pickled carrots, daikon radish,
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL cucumber as well as the sensational aromas and crunch of fried shallots, fried peanuts and crushed roasted rice. Fresh chilli and a selection of hot sauces are optional. Ms Pham - a self-described “foodie girl” - said the fusion concept started with the traditional Vietnamese pork bun and she took it further. “Growing up, I loved all the authentic food that my mother cooked.

transition stage as far as staff and banking arrangements were concerned. However, all agreed there would be no set pattern to cover the Stater as a whole - “one area of Victoria could be as quiet as a grave yard; another could be as busy as Bourke Street on a Saturday morning” one licensee said. Drinkers’ possible reactions to 10 o‘clock closing are still a mystery, and predictions vary widely. What may be considered the average publican’s thoughts were expressed by Mr N Tucker, the licensee of the Albion Hotel Dandenong. Asked about possible repercussion on the changeover, Mr Tucker said “That is something which has to be worked out. If people think that hotels are going to be turned into entertainment houses, they must realise that all those who want entertainment will have to pay a great deal more to have it”.
20 years ago 5 February 1996 PM Woos ‘Green’ Brigade Doveton’s wetlands at Myuna Farm provided a picturesque backdrop for the Prime Minister Keating last Monday, when he announced plans to expand the federally funded Landcare and Environment Action Program (LEAP). “The wetlands are a perfect example of what can be achieved under the program,” said Mr Keating as he walked around the grounds, followed closely by a bevy of cameramen, photographers and journalists. Earlier that day, Mr Keating had been in Frankston where he announced the Federal Government’s Young Australia program. On Thursday, day four of the election campaign, Mr Keating paid another visit to the area. This time he joined the federal

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 3 February 1916 Commonwealth War Loan The response of the country to the Government’s call for men had been magnificent, and the conduct of the Australians under fire has gained the admiration of the civilised world. What these soldier sons of Australia have done will prove a heritage of incalculable benefit to our future generations and, in addition, repays in a measure the mother country in her hour of need for a protection which has enable us to enjoy the fullest liberty the world has known. It is hoped that the country’s call for money will be as successful as was the call for men. Many millions are needed to equip and maintain our troops at least on equality with the Kaiser’s hordes. NEW turning arrows have finally been switched on at a notorious Hallam intersection. The arrows are now up and running at the intersection of Hinrichsen Drive and Fitzgerald Road as part of the Victorian Government’s $11.2 million injection into improving roads in Endeavour Hills, Narre Warren North and Hallam. From 2010 to 2014 there have been 12 recorded crashes at the Hinrichsen Drive intersection, two of which resulted in serious injuries, Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said. “We’ve delivered on our commitment to improve safety and reduce congestion at this key intersection, he said. “As residents return from holidays and drivers are returning to work, this intersection will become busier during the drop-off and pick-up times around the local area. It’s not the first traffic safety concerns near Hinrichsen Drive have been raised. In January 2015 Star News spoke to a Hallam resident from the adjoining Appila Close who, for the second time in three years, had a car crash through his front fence. In 2014 Casey councillors installed a speed hump in Hinrichsen Drive near Keppel Drive after a 100-signature petition was presented to them.

Not just a new name… but also a new look with new sections.
Little brother born to heal By LACHLAN MOORHEAD TO ANYONE who didn’t know the background, the lady sitting in the Casey Council chamber with a baby cradled in her arms could’ve been anyone. Her name is Renee and she is councillor Damien Rosario’s wife. The baby she held was their newborn son, Xavier. It wasn’t just a special moment because it was the first council meeting Xavier, born on 6 January, had attended, but because it came two and a half years after Damien and Renee lost their daughter Amelia, who died at birth. Amelia was cruelly struck with Patau syndrome - a genetic disorder that produces an extra copy of the 13th chromosome. It was a tragedy that saw the other Casey councillors and the local community rally around Damien, which culminated in Mayor Sam Aziz inviting Renee and Xavier to this year’s first council meeting. “It was a journey we all took together - councillors and council officers, the community and my family - and it was nice to get the acknowledgement of that journey for all of us,” Cr Rosario said. “Everyone was along for the journey, they stuck by us through the hardship and it was nice to now have something positive. “It was really nice and I felt very honoured that the mayor

and council would take the time out to acknowledge us.” Cr Rosario said the tragedy had had a profound effect on everyone, particularly Renee. “It was particularly hardest on my wife who didn’t have a baby in her arms, and a baby to take home and that really hurt,” he said. Earlier this month, when Xavier was born, a new chapter began for the Rosarios. He is a happy and healthy boy, who shares the same birth-
day as his mum. “He’s doing well, he’s a healthy baby and he’s growing quickly,” Cr Rosario said. “He’s just keeping us up at night.” Last May Star News reported on Damien and Renee presenting a high-quality camera, ink, paper and printer to St John of God hospital in Berwick to help other families capture memories of their stillborn children. The camera is engraved in dedication to Amelia.

Fully prepped for school SCHOOL is back in style at Mossgiel Park Primary School. Prep students were welcomed with open arms this week as they started their first day at the Endeavour Hills school. There were smiles and packed lunched all around as the students started the new school year. It comes after 34 students from
the school were awarded with a certificate for a 100 per cent attendance rate last year. There were five students in different year levels who had attended school every day since their prep enrolment. This included Charlie, a student from year six last year, who didn’t miss one day during her entire stint at primary school.

Australia Day 2016
Pride in achievements By LACHLAN MOORHEAD ON THE Doveton stage a group of children held two-sided flags - one with Australian colours and the other with Indian colours. The moment was a poignant recognition that Australia Day falls on the same date as India’s Republic Day - 26 January. The 2016 Doveton Australia Day celebrations, held at Recreation Reserve, were hosted by the Melbourne Malayalee Federation, an Indian community group which used the event as an opportunity to celebrate both cultures. Melbourne Malayalee Federation president Dr Shaji Varghese said he and the other members loved being a part of Australia. “We are proud to be Australian and to be part of the group and we wanted to be part of the Australia Day celebrations,” he said. “It’s a new country, it’s multiculturalm, so people from all over the world are here and I want to be a part of that.” Many people of varying nationalities attended the Doveton event, including Australia Day Ambassador and former Victorian Premier John Cain, Casey councillor Damien Rosario and outgoing Casey Citizen of the Year Brooke McGowan-Grills. The guests were treated to a range of entertaining acts, including Indian dancing, children singing, and tunes from the Cranbourne Lions Concert Band. It was a display of multiculturalism and councillor Damien Rosario, who represents the River Gum Ward, made this clear in his speech. “Doveton is a wonderful example of modern day Australia,” he said. “Our diverse and multicultural community reflects our nation’s commitment to welcome all people and today we come together to celebrate the spirit of our nation. “It’s a great opportunity as well to think about what it is to be Australian, because we, and this might be a biased opinion, we have the best country in the world. “We’re so diverse and we’re multicultural, we have fantastic groups like this one here who are running the show. “And for us to all come together and work together, Australia to me is about helping each other out, about welcoming others, and that’s what we do great in Australia.” Former Victorian Premier John Cain was this year the Australia Day Ambassador for Eumemmering and echoed Cr Rosario’s sentiments. “It’s good to see that an event of this kind in the City of Casey is today largely being handled, promoted, managed by the Indian community and that reflects the nature of our multicultural society and it’s good to see,” he said. Mr Cain also used his appearance at the Doveton barbecue to remind the crowd of Australia’s “shortcomings” in helping and respecting the indigenous community, and called for change. “We can look back with pride at what we’ve been able to achieve ... we can also look back on this day, and I think we should, and acknowledge some shortcomings,” Mr Cain said. “To me, arguably the most obvious shortcoming is despite our capacity to receive and acknowledge and look after a wide range of migrants, settlers from all over the world, we have failed badly in looking after the original, Aboriginal people. “They’re state of life reflects our failures. The life expectancy, the number of Aboriginal people in our jails, we let them down badly and more needs to be done as a continuing affection as we journey through these years of 2000. “The other thing we can look back and say we haven’t done as well as we might is caring for and receiving refugees. Because that’s the reason this society began and we need to do better to recognise our shortcomings over the last 10 or 15 years in not receiving as warmly as we should those who are forced by circumstances beyond their control to come to this country. “They’re two shortcomings but despite that you should see today as one of reflection and celebration. “A reflection that we as a present citizen of Australia can be proud of what we have achieved.”
The kids sang the Australian National Anthem with pride.

AFFORDABLE BEACHSIDE GEM BUYERS will have to hurry to secure a slice of the affordable beachfront lifestyle on offer at Phillip Island’s Woolamai House with the upcoming final release of 22 allotments in stage two. Blocks starting from as little as $225,000 are located just steps from the pristine beach of Cape Woolamai and buyers have been eager to secure what is one of the most affordable and, until now, best-kept Victorian coastal secrets. The project’s final stage will comprise only 22 lots where buyers can enjoy the same benefits afforded by the multimillion-dollar lifestyle in the likes of Portsea, Sorrento and Torquay for just a fraction of the cost. Woolamai House hosted a fun day with a swag of fun family activities to enjoy while providing buyers with the chance to secure one of these great coastal lots on offer. Some of the activities visitors enjoyed included a jumping castle, face painting, free barbecue, Californian baja-style nachos, ice-cream, and light entertainment.
Woolamai House sales agent Greg Price this was a truly a one-of-kind lifestyle opportunity that was not to be missed. “The combination of a beach lifestyle and stunning location, coupled with fantastic affordability, offers great buying value and we really encourage those interested in a beach lifestyle to call in and check out what the project has to offer. “On 16 January at our release event we truly expected strong interest in the lots on offer and we really encourage everyone to call in and not miss out,” he said. “Buyers first hand see the incredible value in Phillip Island with other coastal hotspots such as Sorrento, Portsea and Torquay often pricing out buyers keen to secure a fantastic coastal lifestyle,” Mr Price said. Lots range from 504 to 930 square metres and start from as little as $225,000. The Final Release Fun Day was held on 16 January at Grofam Court, Cape Woolamai. SALE CARES FOR KIDS Buy Property Direct and Mainline Developments have partnered with Menzies Caring for Kids by donating a newly constructed luxury home in Langwarrin to raise funds for ongoing community work. Menzies Caring for Kids is a non-profit organisation which supports young people who can no longer live with their natural families. Founded in 1865 and established in Frankston in 1901, Menzies Caring for Kids has provided a high standard of support for young people in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula region. Through funding and partnerships Menzies Caring for Kids equips these people with the life skills they need to lead safe, independent and fulfilled lives. Menzies Caring for Kids is run by a dedicated committee of volunteers and therefore all resources and donations received are committed to the sole purpose of helping others. In a joint effort between Buy Property Direct and Mainline Developments, the Menzies Caring for Kids Charity House Auction plans to raise awareness of this worthy cause and, more importantly, raise much-needed money to continue working in the local bayside community. All the proceeds of the auction funds will extend work started among a coalition of Frankston North schools, providing paediatric and occupational therapy to minimise the disadvantage on students who might not normally be able to access these health services. It is the first project of its type to be operating in a school and is proving to be an outstanding success, with statistical and anecdotal evidence highlighting early benefits for the schools, students and their families.
Mainline Developments completed construction on the four-bedroom, two-bathroom home in January. The new property features a spacious double car garage, entertaining alfresco area, generous master en suite, fully landscaped gardens and host of full turnkey inclusions, making this ideal for a prospective buyer who wants to move straight in. Buy Property Direct managing director David Brewster praised Menzies Caring for Kids for its important work. “It’s a great initiative and it’s been outstanding to see the number of trades and suppliers get on board to help us achieve the project,” he said. “Every dollar from the auction will be
retained by the charity, so it’s a great opportunity for one lucky real estate buyer to give back to Menzies and the local community.” An overwhelming number of supporting partners have volunteered to help the cause with more than 35 individual media, planning and construction businesses partnering the project. Menzies Caring for Kids will commit every dollar raised from the sale to assist young people living in the area. Buy Property Direct will be marketing the property for auction in the $450,000 plus range. Menzies president Kevin Johnson welcomed the funds. “Menzies Caring for Kids is an
organisation dedicated to supporting young people in Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula. “We are over the moon with what these guys are doing for the kids we support. “As a result of this particular project we will be able to support disadvantaged kids who, through no fault of their own, do not get the medical attention they require. “Menzies cares about kids!” The property at 48 Tamara Circuit, Langwarrin, will be sold through a public auction at noon on Saturday 27 February and is open for inspection every Saturday and Sunday from 11.30am to noon until the auction. A full list of all supporting partners can be found on the project website.

Health comes into view By LACHLAN MOORHEAD LUKE Wu’s recent visit to Fiji certainly opened his eyes. The Narre Warren optometrist visited in November as part of an outreach program organised by the Fred Hollows Foundation and Specsavers, where Luke works at its Fountain Gate outlet. During the initiative he assisted in an intensive training program for Pacific Island students in the final week of their Postgraduate Diploma in Eye Care Nursing at The Foundation’s Pacific Eye Institute. “My boss nominated me and I thought I might as well look at the opportunity,” Luke said. “It sounded like a good thing for me to do.” As part of the program Luke, who studied for five years to become an optometrist, helped train many aspiring eye specialists, many of who were returning to countries where they would be the only eye-care nurse available. “I felt really good about going there and I would’ve liked to be there longer than a week,” he said. “I didn’t feel it was long enough to

make a big, big impression.” As well as encountering people who didn’t realise they were overdue for glasses, Luke and the other trainers were also coming face to face with many people suffering diabetes, which often negatively affects a suffer’s sight.
“Even in the nearby countryside, 50 to 60 per cent of people had diabetes,” Luke said. “Many people had problems with their eyes and problems with long-term sight. “And the accessibility of glasses is not common knowledge.”
But Luke felt he had an influence on helping these people see better and it’s a gift he would love to pass on again. “I’d definitely do this again, it was worth my while,” he said. “It was a great experience to see what’s happening around the rest of the world.”
Walk for Windermere and help transform lives WINDERMERE is calling for support as its members prepare to embark on their annual trek through the Sumatran jungle later this year. Eight months before people representing the Narre Warren organisation set out on the Trek to Transform Lives - which will run from 7 to 16 October - they have started fund-raising to reach their $3000 target. And they are calling for anyone out
there to help their cause. It’s a cause for people like Carla, who with the help of Windermere Child and Family Services was able to save herself and her eight-year-old son from an abusive relationship. “He beat me with a sledgehammer and left me to die on the kitchen floor in front of my eight year old son,” she said. But even when she got out, more challenges lay ahead. Carla was forced to sell her home and if it weren’t for Windermere, she doesn’t know what
would have happened. Fortunately, the organisation was able to give Carla and her son access to temporary housing. “There are many Australians out there suffering from neglect, abuse and the kinds of hardship that life sometimes throws at us,” Windermere CEO Lynette Buoy said. “At Windermere, we aim to transform the lives of those who need it most but we need help. “We’re thrilled to launch our Sumatran
Trek to Transform Lives because while trekking through jungle won’t necessarily be easy, it is a small taste of the hardships that face the majority of people that we see at Windermere.” With every kilometre completed on the trek, Dr Buoy said, participants will be helping to change lives. “And we’ll be there to support them along the way because their challenge is our challenge,” she said. For more information and to help the cause, visit www.windermere.org.au
GOLFERS will tee off to help raise money for school books, shoes and uniforms at this year’s Take a Swing for Charity Golf Day event. The event, which has raised more than $250,000 for Greater Dandenong charities in the past seven years, will benefit the State Schools Relief Fund. Last year the golf day raised $44,000 for 679 disadvantaged students from 17 Greater Dandenong schools. Greater Dandenong Mayor Heang Tak said the event’s success depended on backing from local businesses. “This event is a chance for business and industry to come together to have fun, network and, more importantly, give back to the community,” councillor Tak said. “Keeping our young people at school is critical and any support we can give a child to continue their education cannot be overstated.” The golf day is at Sandhurst Golf Club, 600 Thompsons Road, Sandhurst, on Monday 22 February at 11.30am. Registrations close on 12 February. Details at www.greaterdandenong.com.

DANIEL Cheng hopes to see lots of little monkeys running around at this year’s Lunar New Year festival in Springvale. “It is the year of monkey - so I want to see monkey face paint on everyone,” said Mr Cheng, president of the Springvale Asian Business Assocation. It will be the annual new year extravaganza’s 24th year in Springvale and Mr Cheng said the festival was expected to bring in more than 70,000 people. “People come for the food, flag raising ceremony, lion dancing and fire crackers,” he said.
“This year we will have the national anthem sung by the Melbourne Chinese children’s choir.” The monkeying around theme of 2016 is meant to bring good luck to everybody. And the day will also bring together other Asian cultures, including a dance routine by a New Zealand act. “This year there will be four MCs, all speaking different languages including English, Cambodian, Chinese and Vietnamese,” Mr Cheng said. On the day festival goers will be treated to a Japanese drumming performance and
Cambodian songs, along with more than 70 stalls of food and merchandise. Mr Cheng said he is excited to taste some of the new rice flavours that will be launched at the free new year party and take in the lively atmosphere of the day. Dandenong Mayor Sean O’Reilly is expected to grace the stage and Victoria Police officers will raise the Australian flag. The official ceremonies will kick off at 12.30pm but stalls will be open from 10am on Sunday 7 February in Buckingham Street, Springvale.

Help does the rounds By CASEY NEILL VOLUNTEERING has always come naturally to Frank Silvera. The 92-year-old from Dandenong North had been visiting Kathleen Brown at aged care centre Outlook Gardens each fortnight for the past 10 years. They’d matched through Keysborough Learning Centre’s (KLC) community visitors scheme. Mr Silvera said Ms Brown kept to herself but “didn’t mind me coming and talking to her”. “She was from India. I was able to talk to her a lot about the area where she lived in Bombay,” he said. “My sister was working for the government telegraphs and her father was the manager. “It was a strange coincidence - I had to come here to meet her!” He only retired from the program this past year, due to declining health. “I enjoyed her company,” he said. “When I’d enter the place, she’d say ‘what have you to tell me today about life in Bombay?’” Mr Silvera moved to Australia from India 26 years ago and spent time in Brisbane before settling in Melbourne. He soon became involved with Cooinda Centre, which was established in Dandenong and moved to Springvale South. “I was one of the first volunteers to join the Cooinda group,” he said. Three years ago, after 12 years as a volunteer, he switched places. “I’m not a volunteer anymore. I’m a client,” he said. “I go to the Monday group which is for Indian, Asian, Sri Lankan and Australian.” Daughter Belinda Luis said her father had been an amazing inspiration. “I’ve picked a lot of dad’s habits of sharing and caring for other people,” she said. “Volunteer work comes to us easily. “I volunteer feeding the homeless. My kids are doing

it now as well. “It just becomes, I think, a cycle. “When we were young kids growing up, Dad would come home from his day job, be at home a little while and then he’d go to meetings. “It never stopped. It was like a second job to him.” Community visitors scheme co-ordinator Jo Storm said the program was less about doing things for people and more about helping them to do things for themselves. “Volunteers play a fantastic role by being beside residents, taking them out in the community, chatting with them, driving them to places they would not otherwise
get to,” she said. Eight new volunteers joined the team during the past financial year and five moved on. “We have 28 volunteers visiting residents on a regular basis, some visit two or more residents at different aged care facilities,” Ms Storm said. “We have 10 different nationalities represented in our volunteers. This has been a wonderful asset, as some residents have not been able to have a proper conversation in their native language in years.” Call KLC on 9798 7005 for more information about the community visitors scheme or to get involved.
Parents urged to jab kids AS ABOUT 74,000 Victorian children gear up for kinder, the State Government is urging families to make sure their children’s vaccinations are up to date. The No Jab, No Play law applies to long day care, occasional care, family day care and kindergarten, and has received strong support from the community and early childhood sector. Health Minister Jill Hennessey said the law, which came into force on 1 January, will reduce the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases through boosted immunisation rates in the community. Vaccinations provide young children with protection against serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, and help to control and manage public health risks. To help the estimated 20 per cent of parents who simply forget when their child’s vaccinations are due, the government last year launched a new app, VaxOnTime, to help these busy parents keep track of when their young children are due for a vaccination.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Grant gets to the pointe By CASEY NEILL DANCE teacher Michelle Johnson was floored to receive a Greater Dandenong Business Grant on 10 December. Thanks to the $8000 helping hand her new Melbourne Ballet School studio soon will be, too. “We are putting in flooring which is called tarkett, which is a dancespecific vinyl and what the Australian Ballet dances on,” she said. “It’s a state-of-the-art dance floor, which we wouldn’t have been able to do without the grant.” Michelle also receives business mentoring as part of the grant. She started Melbourne Ballet School in 2011. “I was teaching in South Melbourne but I stopped to open my own class when I had a family,” she said. “When I first started back I did one class a week and now we have 45 classes. “Each year it’s doubled in numbers and we were growing out of the community centres that we were working in and needed our own permanent place to grow further. “That’s why we’re here.” “Here” is a space in Summit Road, Noble Park North. “We had classes at Nazareth, at the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre and at the Jan Wilson Centre,” Michelle said. “I wanted something in the middle if we could. “I was looking in Dandenong, Noble Park, Keysborough and Springvale for the perfect location. “It’s perfect. We’ve got the two studios that we can run at the same time so we’ve doubled the amount of classes. “There’s me and three other teachers. “One of the teachers is also a singing teacher so she’ll be doing singing lessons as well.” She’ll also use the extra space to introduce classes for teens and adults, and a boys-only hip hop class. “We have boys interested but when there’s no other boys in the class... ” she said. “Once you’ve got some it grows.” Melbourne Ballet School offers ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD) exams. “I danced for 20 years and then I have been teaching for 17 years - was teaching and dancing at the same time,” Michelle said. “I always just loved to dance, and the variety of doing the ballet and the

BUSINESS PROFILE
Eco friendly business experiences boom
Solar power is a sunrise industry.
BUSINESS is heating up for Queensland based company Euro Solar which is one of the many ecofriendly businesses enjoying the economic boom as consumers become more environmentally aware. Euro Solar is leading the way with its wide range of solar driven and energy efficient products and provides clients with a wide range of energy efficient solutions including solar power installations, solar hot water, lighting and custom designed systems. The company has grown to more
than 200 staff and was recently recognised as one of the top 10 solar companies in Australia. Increased affordability combined with greater environmental awareness has seen a particularly high rise in sales over the past 12 months. Chris Schmidt of Euro Solar said: “One of our company directors has green engineer qualifications, so we’re able to provide customised advice on reducing energy consumption.” Also in development is a solar air-conditioning unit which will be
produced and built in Australia. “We will continue to grow and expand until we are the company top of mind for energy efficient solutions. “We’re passionate about seeing our customers reduce their energy bills to zero and even reach the stage where they are receiving tariffs back for the electricity being fed back into the grid,” Mr Schmidt said. “Our aim is to make solar power for homes, communities, businesses and schools a viable, affordable option for hundreds of thousands of
people across Australia,” he said. A commitment to customer service sets Euro Solar apart from its competitors. Its experienced staff undertake regular training to be able to answer questions and stay on top of industry developments. Euro Solar is committed to developing and educating the public on the benefits of solar power. Phone 1300 387 676 to book a free consultation.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH DANDENONG charity Avocare has branched out into neighbouring Casey to offer computers to students who are unable to afford the vital link to the world wide web. The Work for the Dole scheme transforms old dying computers and provides them free to anyone who needs one. Avocare training manager Deb Hutton said it was the first time the organisation had run the computer rescue program. “We’re targeting school students and
low income families who are going back to school,” Ms Hutton said. “This gives them an opportunity to get a computer for nothing which includes a monitor and hard drive - the only things they have to buy are a keyboard and mouse.” Dandenong and Casey residents are encouraged to donate computers they no longer use to the program to be restored, cleaned and rebooted for someone in need. “To pick one up we just need to see a healthcare card because we want to make
Picture: GARY SISSONS sure we are donating them to the right people, those who are genuinely struggling,” she said. Computers started piling in at Avocare’s Cranbourne workshop in November and about 30 computers are ready to be donated. Ms Hutton said 18 the Work for the Dole participants decided whether the computer are useable, before installing new software and testing and tagging all cords. “The great thing about this program is
that people can pick up everything they need to make an office or study nook,” Ms Hutton said. “We sell office furniture as well so someone can get an office desk and chair, a filing cabinet as well as a computer.” Ms Hutton suggests people speak with the Work for the Dole team about which computer will best suit them. “Each computer will have different programs on it so one might suit someone better than another,” she said. The program finishes in early April.

Honour for a top Panther By JARROD POTTER MANY elite sportspeople have come through the City of Greater Dandenong but the city’s inaugural Sports Hall of Fame inductee is better known for his work off the field. In a sign of how important those doing the behind-the-scenes work are to the city, Dandenong Cricket Club president Michael Findlay was named the first entrant to the Sport Hall of Fame at Australia Day celebrations on Tuesday. The Panthers’ life-member was shocked to hear his name called but was extremely humbled at his inclusion in the pantheon of local sports achievers. “I was very surprised about receiving the award,” Findlay said. “There are a lot of people who have put a lot into sport in Dandenong and the area so to be the first is quite an honour.” From Findlay’s playing-days with Doveton North - as a “left-arm medium bowler and down the order bat” as he puts it - before becoming the club’s president, secretary and a junior representative on the DDCA committee, Findlay eventually found his way to Shepley Oval and has since become an integral part of the Panthers’ community. His time at Dandenong started in the early ’90s as he captained the fourth XI and mentored the juniors finding their way in the elite club. From there he was an important part of the club’s Dowling Shield side - featuring a few familiar names in Peter Siddle and Cameron White - as the side began its march towards its inaugural premiership in 2006/07. But throughout it all, Findlay takes his greatest
Dandenong Cricket Club president Michael Findlay became the first inductee to the City Picture: GARY SISSONS of Greater Dandenong's Sports Hall of Fame. 149579 joy from seeing juniors come through the ranks as well as watching all sports in Greater Dandenong flourish.
“I suppose, generally, it’s watching the young kids coming through and working hard to achieve promotion and reach their potential,” Findlay said.
“The early Dowling Shield with Cameron White, Peter Siddle - seeing Darren Pattinson get a game for England and James (Pattinson) coming through - knew him from when he was five. “The premierships in 2007 and 2011 - couldn’t beat the feelings there.” With the city at the forefront of both elite and recreational sport in a number of sports, Findlay wants to see Dandenong continue to establish exceptional standards for the next generation of men and especially women. “Dandenong is pretty well represented in all sports - it’s been a focus for sport since I was a kid,” Findlay said. “We’ve got top teams in soccer, basketball, the Stingrays and us (Dandenong Cricket Club). “I think if we can focus on bringing sport tor everyone and sport for the elite in Dandenong we can give everyone the opportunity to work right through to their full potential in sports. “All sports have to concentrate on putting more time into the young people and developing them - women’s sport in particular has been highlighted and if they put more resources into that. “The Stingrays have done a great job getting their girls’ team up and running, the Dandenong Women’s doing a good job in increasing the number of girls playing - I think we need to play a bigger role in that in future years.” He wanted to thank his great mentors throughout the years - Frank Holohan, Ross Hepburn, Ray Evans especially his mum Joan, as well as the City of Greater Dandenong for ensuring the club’s facilities at Shepley Oval and Wilson Oval remained top-notch for the club’s future champions.
Third time and still lucky By JARROD POTTER ONE team is enough for most footy coaches - let alone what Scott Gowans has embarked upon in 2016. Adding to an already jampacked football schedule, the Longwarry and Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls Academy coach is now at the helm of his third side - the Vic Country Youth Girls. He’s made the switch from Vic Metro Youth Girls assistant to taking the reins of Vic Country for the 2016 AFL Youth Girls National Championships, held in May across Melbourne. “I was quite excited when I was announced and just looking forward to the challenge as it’s a big challenge,” Gowans said. While it’s weird to leave the Metro ranks - and face the prospect of coaching against some of his Stingrays squad members and former Vic Metro players Gowans thought it was the right time to take on the new role. “The accepting thing was I got a lot of supportive messages from the Metro girls - that makes me feel a little better but obviously when we play Metro it will be a little bit funny,” Gowans said. “I’ve also learned heaps off (Vic Metro coach) Wayne (Siekman) - he’s very structured in time management and game plans ... and if you’ve got a particular game plan, you’re recruiting girls to play to that plan, not just picking the best 27 girls to play footy.” Numbers have already been impressive for the Country con-

Scott Gowans has been selected as Vic Country Youth Girls' head coach. 146957 tingent as the first round of tryouts had 55 elite players attend. Gowans admits Vic Country’s winless national championship record is his first port of call and hopes to bring the best metropolitan strategies to the regional squad to turn the form around. “The big difference between Country and Metro was the professionalism,” Gowans said. “Country was a little bit, I suppose, had a country feel to
it ... just not as professional, but I’m going to bring in that professionalism and metro feel - they’ll be a lot more serious. “They haven’t won a game yet at the nationals - they’re 0-8 - and I want to be able to win our first game.” It all boils down to the players he can put on the park and Gowans thinks the rest of the competition is set for a surprise as his Vic Country contingent has advanced drastically.
WITH 2015 in the rear-view mirror, the New Year is well and truly under way for the Dandenong Stingrays. The highs and lows of last season - with seven drafted into the AFL contrasting against a preliminary final loss - hope to be exceeded by the next batch of up-and-coming Stingrays. Pre-season training was taken up a gear this week as Dandenong traded Shepley Oval for an indoor run-around at ICON Arena, Doveton, as coach Craig Black and his staff start to whittle down the list. With 83 footballers currently doing a pre-season, there’s a lot to do before the first match on 26 March, but Black believes the list will be strong heading
into the new campaign. “I think we’ve got a really even group,” Black said. “We keep setting the standards and the old saying ‘if you do the same thing, you’ll get the same result’ - so as a coaching group we’re challenging each other - and the players who were on our list last year, who are now our 18 year olds, are trying to lift the standards too.” AFL Academy tandem Josh Battle and Myles Poholke have barely stopped since the end of the TAC Cup season, going into pre-season training at the AFL level before heading across to America. “We’ve been pretty lucky with the academy kids,” Black said. “Josh Battle got to spend a couple of weeks at St Kilda and
Myles Poholke spent a couple of weeks at Essendon preChristmas then the two of them went on the academy trip across to Florida. “They’re all back now and I think we’ve got a few kids who haven’t been involved in our program before that are setting really good standards.” Battle, Reece Piper and Jordan Stewart lead the names from the south eastern area, but Black said there was plenty of time left for a few more names to bob up - especially with intra-club matches starting next weekend. “First intra-club practice game is next Sunday 7 February, so it’s a really good opportunity for the boys - especially the guys we haven’t seen play a lot,” Black said.

By JARROD POTTER TAKING a rare representative hat-trick, the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) showed it’s still the region to beat with a 12-run grand final victory over VTCA South. Continuing the stellar run which has seen the association with six of the last eight Neil Wright Shield grand finals, the Dandy boys shone once again on Sunday morning. It was not as effortless as its round robin matches, but the DDCA endured the best of VTCA South’s batting and bowling to hold aloft the shield for the third season in a row. “They always take it very seriously the DDCA - we always plan to win it but never believe we’ll do it easily,” DDCA under-21 coach Craig Slocombe said. “We always just want to show the other associations we’re serious about improving our competition, with not just overseas talent but local kids too. “The boys were really good - we didn’t have any out and out superstars, but this year the team gelled really well and that’s what probably won us the title.” After early wickets forced him to curtail his natural game, Hallam’s Jagveer Hayer (67no) effectively carried his bat and became the rocksolid batsman the rest of the DDCA order could lean on. With Springvale South’s Cameron Scott (33) holding on against the VTCA quicks, the DDCA duo quickly turned 2/11 into 3/92, but after then Hayer had to search for support. The experienced middle order failed to fire as Travis D’Souza (10), Clay McCartney (4) and the skipper Jordan Hammond (9) couldn’t rouse much on the offensive front. It left the scoring to Hayer, who continued his prolific VMCU campaign - knocking in his second half-century. “We lost two early wickets - went in to bat and
DREAMS of playing on the MCG will have to wait another year for Springvale South after the DDCA powerhouse was bundled out of the race to the Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash championship. The Bloods’ campaign ended with a Victorian top-eight finish after falling 20 runs short of Mornington Peninsula powerhouse Sorrento last Sunday. Springvale South couldn’t stop the likes of opposing captain Corey Harris (32) and Robert Wilson (32) getting off the leash early as the Sharks’ tandem belted a few sixes over the fence in the adjoining Springvale Light Steamers track. Its 43-run stand was brought to an end by Craig Berger (1/22) and from there the scoring chances dried

$8 Dandenong District Cricket Association claimed its third Neil Wright Shield in as many attempts after a dogged win on Sunday morning. Picture: PETER BARNES thought the ball would get a bit wet,” Slocombe said. “We moved Cam Scott in at four to see off the new ball and cash in - and he did that. “The partnership along with Jaggers (Hayer) was the one of the innings ... Jaggers batted the whole innings and was the main reason we got 166. “He didn’t take many risks and wasn’t pretty, but from the team point of view that was what we needed ... he had to bat for the team and 166 for us was good when it was definitely a seaming wicket.” The response was dictated by VTCA South’s young Englishman Tom Smith (70) - who survived a second-ball edge that the umpire didn’t pick up. The tall seamers finished the job after Smith’s departure with skipper Hammond (1/36), Matt Wetering (3/26) and Mitch Shirt (3/19) running through the rest of the tail to halt the Turf association’s innings at 154 and give the DDCA the premiership. “We needed to get their Englishman Smith out - we got him snicked second ball and didn’t go
out - probably the only person who didn’t hear it was the umpire,” Slocombe said. “He got 70 and went out with the score on 99 - that’s how dominant a player he is. “Jordan Hammond came on and got a wicket and Shirt came back on and got three bowled Wetering was brilliant again at the start and Jaggers was brilliant and got two wickets.” Slocombe wanted to thank those in the DDCA who helped get the team up and ready - especially Ray Nicholls, Steve Richards, Bill Ford, Michael Hawking, Neil Shaw and Peter the former coach Peter Lindsay. up for the visitors, but similar problems plagued the Bloods’ knock. Michael Vandort (20) and Nathan King (23) were the Bloods’ best as the Sharks mauled the middle order. “It wasn’t conducive to batting - the wicket, dare I say it, it wasn’t conducive for stroke playing which in a twenty20 game you’d expect it to be,” Bloods captain Craig Slocombe said. “They tightened things up and were ahead of the run rate, of course, but at the end of the day they worked out the conditions. “Slow conditions slowed the ball up and made it hard to score and field. “We played a few rash shots and they had just a few older heads that prevailed. “I think we were pretty even with them but it just wasn’t our day.”

Rangers rattle the Spirit By JARROD POTTER WNBL - ROUND 15 IT WAS do or die in many ways on Saturday night as Dandenong prevailed in an 82-74 victory over Bendigo. The eight-point victory ensured three important items were ticked off the Rangers’ WNBL checklist. Dandenong now has a one-game buffer inside the top four as well as bringing the Rangers within striking distance of the top-two and a home final. But most importantly, the successful outing secured the series-win over the Spirit who is right in the hunt for a finals spot as well - a crucial success that could prove important in determining who will advance. The hard-fought triumph was inspired by Dandenong’s efforts that can’t be recorded on the stats-sheet. Physical pressure, powerful defensive presses, diving on any ground ball and generally hustling Bendigo through their set-plays; it was a night where Dandenong had an overwhelming say in the course of the game. It wasn’t just physicality favouring the Rangers for a change as the shooting game was just as dominant. Dandenong rattled the cage in particular through the second term - building an 11-point lead on the back of Steph Cumming (23 points, eight rebounds) and Annalise Pickrel (18 points) effortlessly finding the basket. Another to step up - in arguably her best WNBL performance yet - was Lauren Scherf (14 points). The 20-year-old centre terrorised the Spirit’s talls in tandem with comeback queen Jacinta Kennedy (eight points, 10 rebounds). Joy Burke and Gabe Richards had to contend
Dandenong centre Lauren Scherf amazed the crowd, racking up 14 points as she helped Picture: JARROD POTTER her side claim an eight-point win over Bendigo. 149626 with the Scherf-Kennedy combination as well as Sara Blicavs (16 points) crashing the key and turning the game on its head time and time again. Despite injuring herself in the second half, Bendigo forward Kelsey Griffin (22 points) soldiered on to keep the Spirit alive. Griffin started the third term with five points in 50 seconds and reeling in three dogged rebounds.
Belinda Snell’s three would push Bendigo ahead, but from there on the tables turned back in Dandenong’s favour. The visitors kept in the contest until the final minute, but a brilliant Blicavs’ defence-splitting assist found Pickrel free under the ring to finally break the Spirit. “The girls responded exactly how they should,”
Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson said. “I know we got away with the win against the Boomers on Monday night... it’s not about Adelaide beating us, it’s just about the performance we put forward. “I think they responded beautifully tonight - it was such a big win for our club and I couldn’t be more proud of how they’ve stepped up. “Bendigo is a quality unit and it’s no secret that they’ve been playing pretty well but we showed we match up with them pretty well.” Seeing the plans click together and pay dividends is especially rewarding with the injuries still mounting for Dandenong. But tall tandem Alex Bunton (knee) and Al Downie (calf) should return to the court soon, bolstering the line-up. “It’s all about following game plans and they’ve just been so focused this week with their defence,” Anderson said. “For our first year together, the age that we’re in and such a new group I know I keep saying it but I couldn’t be more proud of them.” The win takes the Rangers within striking distance of Perth and Townsville in the top-two, but with a tough schedule ahead Anderson is not gazing towards finals just yet. We’ve got a lot of work left to do - still have four really tough games left and it doesn’t get any easier,” Anderson said.” “I think we made huge steps forward to go back to what we do really well and made Bendigo play our game and that’s what I’m most pleased about. “The next three games are going to be so hard - we’ve got to go to Sydney and within 12 hours play Canberra. “That’s going to be a really hard trip, then we’ve got to leave the following Thursday to go to Townsville for a Friday night game.

VSDCA - ROUND 10 (Day 2) FINALS dreams were kept alive with a percentage-boosting win as Noble Park’s (5/284) all-round effort helped roll Endeavour Hills (124 and 1/52). After belting nearly 300 last week, via halfcenturies from Sanjeewa De Silva (72), Mevan Fernando (64no) and Jake Richardson (65), Noble Park completed the picture to sear through the visitors’ first innings before a crack at an outright. Bits and bobs made the entirety of the Eagles’ batting initiative as Ben Law (21) tried to hold together the top order. The rout began in earnest after Sacheen Paramesh (2/29) claimed opener Dayle Olson (9), triggering an almighty collapse. The Eagles lost 5/21 as Issy Perera (5/46) spun his way into the match alongside powerful seamer Rizan Mawzoon (2/16). The Bulls’ charge dried up the runs while the wickets flowed freely. Perennial all-rounder Richard Saniga (35no) held up his end of the bargain as per usual smashing a few runs late to chew up the overs. Sending the visitors back in, the quick second innings scalp of Zach Allen (0) gave the Bulls’ a glimmer of outright hope, but in the end would shake hands after 16 overs as Law (32no) and Olson (18no) saw out the final hour. Noble Park skipper Luke Wintle thought the side’s recent form - taking four wins on the trot has been the true reflection of his side’s potential and not the slump through the middle of the VS-
DCA North/East season. “We’ve got to keep winning to stay alive we’re still out of the six so every week is really important to us,” Wintle said. “We didn’t play well enough early - didn’t have enough runs and our bowling wasn’t as consistent as we’d hoped, so certainly the last five matches we’ve been much happier with how we’re performing.” Wintle was thrilled to see everyone get among the wickets in a deservingly emphatic win. “The boys bowled pretty well,” Wintle said. “The wicket was a pretty good one considering all the rain we’ve had this week, so for the quicks to bowl well early and for Issy (Marasinghe Perera) to spin them out and get five-for was a great effort.” Noble Park’s must-win sprint to the end of the season continues against Brunswick in a onedayer. Endeavour Hills sits 13th and will head to Plenty Valley on Saturday. DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 9 The only Turf 1 match to get under way saw Dandenong West (167) post a solid target, especially considering the horrendous conditions this week that hit Greaves Reserve. The Hawks sunk their talons into the Bulls’ top order as only Sam Bracey (58) stood tall. His resilient knock was supported down the line by Shaun Weir (46) and Peter Atkinson (25no). For the visitors, Will Whyte (3/25) and Jordan Hammond (2/34) troubled the hosts the most. Hallam Kalora Park (0/6). The remaining Turf 1 clashes have been rescheduled as one-dayers.

MOTORING Small car is a big show By EWAN KENNEDY THE Skoda Fabia comes as a hatchback and wagon, interior space is something in which Skoda has specialised for many years. Cargo carrying capacity in this small vehicle is 1125 litres with the rear seat backs folded for the hatch, and 1370 litres for the wagon. Many small to medium SUVs have less usable room. Our test vehicle was Fabia 66TSI manual station wagon with a price of $17,140 plus on-road costs. The hatchback range starts at $15,990 plus onroads. The third generation Skoda Fabia takes a new direction in overall styling, the hatch is eight millimetres shorter, 90mm wider and 31mm lower than its predecessor. Note that the wagon is a significant 265 millimetres longer than the hatch for increased luggage space. The added width imbues the front with a stronger character, while distinctive sharp, wide headlights, crystalline glass, slatted grille and the brand’s winged arrow on the bonnet’s nose leave no doubt as to the car’s origins. To try and grab buyers with a taste for more than a car in one of 500 shades of grey, Skoda Fabia can be customised inside and out. Bright colours are there to attract new buyers to Skoda’s cute little Fabia. Magic Black, Quartz Grey and Moon White. A vibrant Sprint Yellow and Rally Green Metallic are available with the Colour Concept. With the Colour Concept option customers can choose between four colours for the roof, including A-pillars and mirror housings - silver, white, black or red. The interior is also offered in an array of colours and combinations. The new Fabia has a Bolero infotainment system has a 6.5-inch TFT
colour touchscreen. There’s smartphone connectivity via SmartLink as standard. It works with both Apple’s CarPlay and Android Auto software. The second generation of Volkswagen’s Modular Infotainment Matrix (MIM) offers Fabia DAB digital radio (an option that’s part of the $2600 Premium Sports Pack), zoom and swipe smartphone-style operation and Bluetooth connection. A 1.2-litre 66TSI turbo-petrol engine produces 66 kW of power and is mated with a five-speed
manual transmission. The same engine in a higher state of tune is ranked at 81 kW. Tagged the 81TSI engine it’s paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission. Both powerplants have a Euro 6 emission rating. Top torque figures are 160 and 175 Nm respectively, not a huge amount of grunt, but it comes in at a pleasingly low 1400 rev on both engines so is very usable. Fabia is fitted standard with the latest technology in Front Assist with the City Emergency Braking function across the range. This uses radar to measure the dis-
tance to the vehicle in front. Whenever the distance is too short, Front Assist gives audio and visual warnings - then automatic emergency stopping if the driver still doesn’t do the right thing. There’s a Multi-collision Brake System that reduces the risk of the vehicle becoming involved in a subsequent collision following the initial crash or at least reduces the speed. When the Multi-Collision Brake is activated it automatically turns on the brake lights and hazard lights. The driver can override the system by accelerating or initiating emergency braking. Again, the Czech’s determination to provide good interior space shows through. There’s room for four full-sized adults without the need to compromise overmuch in rear legroom. Three across the back seat will need to be good friends, though. On our usual drive route in city, suburban and country traffic the freespinning 66 kW TSI motor responded well, taking even steep gradients in its stride thanks to the low-rev grunt provided by the turbocharger. A six-speed manual would be nice, but makers have to keep costs down somehow. Nevertheless we wouldn’t be surprised to see one at the first facelift.
