CASEY Councillor Geoff Ablett has defended his poor council meeting attendance record, saying he puts more than 50 hours into the role a week. It follows a recent media report indicating that Cr Ablett had missed a third of Casey council meetings held in 2014’15 – which was 11 of the 32 ordinary and special council meetings. Cr Ablett missed four consecutive meetings between 6 November and 9 December 2014, according to the article. Statistics from the State Government’s recently launched Know Your Council website also show the City of Casey recorded an 80 per cent councillor attendance rate at meetings, the worst in the state. Last February, a meeting was cancelled for want of a quorum. But Cr Ablett defended his absenteeism, citing illness and leave he was granted while running as a Liberal candidate in the 2014 State Election, along with fellow Casey Councillor Amanda Stapledon. He said he had even missed meetings to visit residents in person to help resolve incidents in his ward. “Every night of the week, I’m out talking to a farmer, saving a business,” he said. “I put in 50 or 60 hours a week, and to be judged on meetings is very unfair, it doesn’t give you the big picture.” Cr Ablett has approached the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) to suggest adjustments be made to the Know Your Council website.
“I don’t think the way the website is set up that it can in any way, shape or form, give the true performance of a councillor,” Cr Ablett said. “It doesn’t count weekend work; it doesn’t count the phone calls.” Cr Ablett, who has served twice as Casey Mayor, said he received roughly 30 councilrelated phone calls a day. In a statement Municipal Association Victoria (MAV) CEO Rob Spence said a councillor’s “overall contribution” needed to be taken into account at the ballot box. “Central to being a good councillor is being available, approachable and engaged in local issues,” Mr Spence said. “Councillors generally have regular contact with community members over the phone, on email and face-to-face at all hours of the day, night and on weekends. “They participate in a wide range of meetings with business and special interest groups, individuals, committees and other governments. “They regularly attend local community events, and read large volumes of reports and materials to prepare for council meetings.” Last November councillors Ablett and Stapledon were cleared of misconduct more than a year after it was reported they were being investigated over allegedly corrupt Liberal Party donations. The pair always denied wrong-doing after being interviewed as part of the State Ombudsman’s probe into donations and council planning decisions.

Graffiti sheeted home
A THIEF who stole about $2000 worth of power tools and knives from a Cranbourne home also took a can of beer from the fridge before leaving. The Halstead Court home was raided sometime between 9.30am on 23 January and 12.30pm on 27 January. The thief broke into the house by forcing open a window before stealing $1820 worth of power tools and a number of knives from the kitchen. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IN A bold move by the City of Casey to help combat the work of street vandals, signs will be erected over graffiti ridden VicRoads property, encouraging motorists to make a complaint call to get Casey streets cleaned up. As it stands the Casey Council cannot remove graffiti on VicRoads infrastructure, something Casey councillors have been trying to rectify for more than a year, Mayor Sam Aziz told Star News. The frustrated mayor said: “The Monash Freeway and the Hallam Bypass, which is the gateway to our city, looks like downtown New York in the 1970s”. “And here we are working hard to build beautiful neighbourhoods and VicRoads don’t want to lift a finger, even though it’s their responsibility - we won’t stop until it gets fixed,” he said. When alerted to graffiti on council or private property, the City of Casey’s policy is to remove it within 24 hours. “If you drive around, Casey property is graffiti free, and we expect nothing less,” Cr Aziz said. But VicRoads will only remove graffiti that’s considered to be racist, offensive or has road safety implications when practical to do so and leave other forms of graffiti until they see fit to remove it. But according to graffiti removal advocate, Cr Wayne Smith, VicRoads has never deemed Casey’s vandal hotspots bad enough to clean up. “I can’t recall sound walls (VicRoads property) in Casey ever having graffiti removed,” Cr Smith said. “Every sound wall that goes along the Monash Freeway through Casey is vandalised and are getting worse, they just keep adding to it.” Acting Metro South East regional director at VicRoads Vince Punaro said graffiti which was deemed offensive got “prioritised depending on its size and location on the road network, against other maintenance activities”. Putting the blame back onto VicRoads, Cr Aziz said motorists could expect to see signs which say something

Mayor Sam Aziz, with graffiti he wants to see gone, on the Monash Freeway sound wall. 149591 Picture: ROB CAREW along the lines of, “VicRoads/VicTracks is responsible for cleaning this graffiti, please contact them, here’s the number”. The signs will be erected a part of the City of Casey’s ongoing campaign to wash Casey clean of vandals. “The signs will go up wherever there’s graffiti on property we can’t clean and we have an extensive Facebook following so the message will be put out through our social media channels as well,” Cr Aziz said. Last financial year, VicRoads allo-
cated $200,000 for graffiti removal in the Metropolitan South East region but Cr Aziz said the problem in Casey was not going away and wouldn’t, unless authorities were quick to act. “You have to remove graffiti straight away and keep removing it, to give vandals less incentive,” Cr Aziz said. The City of Casey removed more than 33,743 square metres of graffiti from the streets from July 2014 to September 2015 at a cost of $334,000. The item of ‘graffiti removal advo-
cacy’ was brought up as urgent business at a Casey Council meeting on Tuesday 19 January. The signs will play one role in the council’s graffiti removal campaign which includes putting continued pressure on the State Government to rid freeway noise walls and railway bridges of vandalism. Residents with information on vandals can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, a part of the State Governments ‘Dob in a Tagger’ graffiti initiative.
Share housing law loophole is covered AFTER months of campaigning from anxious Cranbourne residents, Victoria’s shared housing provisions have been changed to require a council planning approval. The planning loophole was discovered when a rooming house proposal at Concord Place in Brookland Greens Estate, Cranbourne, provoked outrage, with residents concerned about the ‘type’ of person the rooming houses would attract. After several petitions over 12 months and advocacy from the Casey
council and Cranbourne MP Jude Perera, the changes come as a small win for local residents. The revised planning rules mean purpose-built shared houses, regardless of the number of habitable rooms, will require planning approval from council first. Acting Minister for Planning Lisa Neville said: “These are practical changes that will provide greater clarity around where permit exemptions apply for shared housing.” But Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said while this is a positive step, he will con-
tinue to lobby the State Government for a law that allows the council to approve what the building will be used for. “The range of matters that council will be able to consider in assessing an application will still be limited to those relating to the building itself, and not the wider potential impacts of the proposal on the amenity of the area.” He said this was the “fundamental issue of concern” raised by residents. “While this is a positive step, the range of matters that council will be able to consider in assessing an application will still be limited to those relating

to the building itself, and not the wider potential impacts of the proposal on the amenity of the area.” Cr Aziz said the council has “identified potential loopholes in the proposed changes that the minister also needs to resolve” but acknowledged that this was the first phase of the review in addressing community concerns. Casey council promised concerned residents at a meeting on Monday 25 January that it will continue to write to local state MPs and the Minister for Planning to advocate for further changes to the amended provisions.

THE truth is out there - and maybe it’s in Narre Warren. This week the alleged 1993 sighting of a UFO in a Narre Warren paddock and a subsequent alien abduction was beamed back into the public spotlight when the incident was referenced in the rebooted X-Files TV show. The case of Kelly Cahill, who claimed that in August 1993 she was abducted by aliens while driving home along Belgrave-Hallam Road, is arguably considered “one of the most important UFO cases in the world”. And on Sunday night, it was once again thrust into the public consciousness when the incident was mentioned by the characters in the new X-Files series. In the episode FBI special agent Fox Mulder, played by David Duchovny, questions another character, Tad O’Malley, over his extra-terrestrial knowledge and asks him about the Cahill case. O’Malley’s response is swift. “Kelly Cahill and her husband were driving home in Victoria, Australia, when a craft appeared overhead,” he said.

“The Cahills lost an hour of time and Kelly was hospitalised with severe stomach pain after discovering a triangle-shaped mark near her navel.” Ms Cahill, who was 27 at the time, told Today Tonight in the 1990s that she spotted what looked like an airship with a ring of orange lights in the Narre Warren field. She recalled getting out of the car and then being abducted by skinny black figures with bulging red eyes after they approached her. At the time she said she saw two other cars also stop to investigate the alleged UFO, and these two sets of separate witnesses later corroborated Ms Cahill’s story with investigators. Victorian UFO Action (VUFOA) Investigator Ben Hurle said the Kelly Cahill case had “everything”, including “multiple witnesses, missing time and trace evidence”. He said it was a “once in a multi-year event”. “It’s potentially one of the most important UFO cases in the world,” he told Star News this week. “It’s a case that has everything in it, and one key reason is the fact that you had independent witnesses.”
While making headlines at the time, the case later slipped out of mind for a number of reasons according to Mr Hurle, including Ms Cahill’s decision to go to ground. “No-one knows where she is,” he said. “It’s stayed this way for all this time. Once the investigation was done, it sort of turned into a media circus towards the end. “It was a complex case; all the things that could go wrong did go wrong.” But Mr Hurle said he was delighted the Cahill case was again gaining publicity due to the new X-Files episode, and implored anyone with more information to come forward. “I would love the other witnesses to come forward again,” he said. “They were locals ... and they never came forward again after the initial investigation. “The main reason is because it would really substantiate the entire problem. “If they were willing to come out and talk to researchers in the 21st century- that would be lovely.” For more information, visit www.vufoa.com.

Casey Cr Geoff Ablett at the popular Cannons Creek spot where beach goers are getting caught short. 149709 Picture: GARY SISSONS a solution as soon as possible, even suggesting a temporary fix. “I’m working with appropriate council officers to see how we can go about getting something done,” Cr Ablett said. “I will be pushing hard to get a basic toilet even if it’s a hire one until one gets investigated and factored into the budget.” The foreshore committee member advised Star News that going in the bushes is a “health and pollution issue”. “People are forced to use the waters of Rutherford Inlet or the nearby bush, and the waters of Rutherford Inlet run into
Western Port,” they said. Adding to that, Cannons Creek is an area under RAMSAR conservation, and people fish from the jetty and beach all year round. The issue was raised as urgent business by Cr Ablett at a Casey Council meeting on Tuesday 19 January and council resolved to seek State and/ or Federal Government funding to build the toilet if council officers see the need for a toilet. And if government funding is refused, the Casey Council will review the costs in its budget deliberations.
Works to date include; • establishment of site boundaries including installation of site-hoardings, amenities and services, • excavation of the site for the basement car park, • piling to prepare the foundations of the structure, and • beginning of works on the temporary contractor car park at Max Pawsey Reserve.

CANNONS Creek beach goers who need to ‘spend a penny’ may be in luck when the warm weather rolls around next summer. But it will take a few pennies and signatures of approval to get this loo up and running. Councillor Geoff Ablett was recently alerted to the unhygienic problem, where busting visitors to The Bluff, near the Cannons Creek jetty, have been relieving themselves in scrub land. “The closest toilet is quite some distance from where people are going on the shore and it’s an inconvenience and a long walk,” Cr Ablett said. “There’s more people living there and they’ve discovered a sandy beach, which is shallow for kids and a nice spot for a picnic but there’s no toilet nearby, if there was one it would be ideal.” A member of the Cannons Creek Foreshore Committee of Management (CCFCM), who wishes to go unnamed, said the nearest toilet was about 400 metres away from the popular spot. “Cannons Creek has only one public toilet, attached to the Community Place and you must get the key from the General Store across the road to open it,” they said. “This beach is the only one for many kilometres around Lang Lang to beyond Hastings.” Delighted at the growth of the area, Cr Ablett wants to see

I WRITE to refute the recurring statements made by Mr Girton and Mr Kotsiras in their letter (Unwanted Bunjil, Berwick and Cranbourne News, 28 January). These letters are becoming tiresome. Not only is the same unfounded argument being repeated like a broken record but this couple continue to peddle mistruths about the Bunjil Place project. It is imperative to correct the author; Mr Girton was transparently provided with an extract from council’s independent survey report demonstrating public support for the project. Council is being attacked by a minority group of only two people for conducting this survey, which received more than 500 responses, making outrageous claims about the project on behalf of the same community. This is a contradiction. As repetition seems to be the trend, I’d like to again share that: 1. The $25.5m allocated in this year’s budget for the project is part of the $125m for the project and is fully funded in council’s Budget and Strategic Resource Plan. 2. Almost 50 per cent of Casey’s population is made up of students aged under 18 and their families, who are crying out for quality arts and performing venues close to home. Just ask any school principal, music teacher or local arts organisation (many of whom have written to express their support for the project). 3. The project is a major boost for the local economy, creating jobs and local procurement opportunities, see council’s construction update advertisement on page five in this edition of the News to find out how local manufacturers and suppliers can get involved. 4. Bunjil Place operational costs are factored into council’s four year Strategic Resource Plan. It’s a shame the authors continue to focus their efforts on unfairly attacking Bunjil Place instead of positively advocating for real issues for the ratepayers they claim to represent. Cr Sam Aziz, Mayor, City of Casey.
We're paying the price I am not surprised and I expected the Casey council to apply for a rate rise above CPI. If you travel down Clyde Road you can see many new housing estates being built by developers. I expect the developers are paying council some sort of fee and if so how much? And where is that money going to? So just because houses are going up quicker than I can blink why are council in such a hurry to build new sporting grounds? I think Casey council needs to do an audit on all of our grounds to see what percentage they are being used. Are council also aware that in April health

Figures don't add up DUNSTAN Girton and Louis Kotsiras (Unwanted Bunjil, News, 28 January) have placed the issue of Bunjil Place into perspective. Ratepayers are entitled to see the evidence for the Bunjil Place project. There is a lack of transparency and evidence behind the Bunjil Place project. Casey council claims the benefits from this project’s development are the creation of 1200 jobs. I have requested to see the modelling for this but council has refused to reply and show me evidence to substantiate a claim which I suspect has been greatly exaggerated. A new council must be elected at the next local government elections. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.
Day of dedication AS A humble citizen I wish to extend my congratulations to Colin Booth and all local CFA firefighters (On A Firey Path, News, 28 January). It’s refreshing to see accolades being given to fair dinkum people serving our community rather than the usual doling out of awards to already highly decorated and renumerated actors, sportspeople and alike. I think Victorians need to do more to honour those who serve and volunteer - perhaps we should have a day to celebrate them rather than celebrating labour, Queen’s birthdays or Grand Final eve. Let’s find more ways to say thanks to people like Colin and our firefighters. Ashley Lodder, Berwick.
Ban booze adverts Legislation controlling alcohol advertising is a positive move that will reduce alcohol consumption. Any small thing that can be done is worthwhile doing to lower alcohol abuse. We are aware that alcohol is a revenue maker for the government but it is much more
practical to reduce alcohol consumption and not encourage it as advertising does. Reducing alcohol advertising is an obvious way to reduce alcohol consumption for many reasons eg family violence, road accidents, health care, hoon drivers etc. Ron Roberts, Cranbourne.
Wonderful opportunity WE refer to the letter Unwanted Bunjil in the News of 28 January and would seek to offer our thoughts on the project which we see as a wonderful opportunity for Casey to become a leader in the arts in the south-eastern Melbourne region. The basis of the letter seems to be that Casey does not need any additional council offices or additional library facilities, has not sought sufficient public input from residents, has not disclosed how it intends paying the cost of the project and that there is an intention to increase rates to fund the facility. The proposed project is not simply a library and council office it is a multifaceted complex including an 800 seat regional theatre, a studio space for smaller performances, trade shows, school productions and presentations and local performing arts shows, a regional arts gallery, a 350 seat function centre, a community library, a civic centre and offices and a community plaza. The council has invited public feedback on a number of occasions and engaged an independent research firm to review the public response to the feedback requests and conduct a telephone survey to determine the level of community support. In our view the fact that 82 per cent of respondents supported the project is an overwhelming endorsement of the proposal. The initial proposal approved by the council clearly indicated that the project is to be financed from accumulated savings and loan facilities and will not require any increase in rates. Based on the projection of jobs created during the construction phase, the fact that the scheme will employ 50 people and provide outstanding facilities for the city’s residents and the arts local community, we strongly support the project. Jack Simpson, Cranbourne Lions Concert Band.

It’s None Of Our Business But ... 25 January it was revealed that Casey counsellor Geoff Ablett has been spending his own loot on the protest. A resident spokesperson told the audience of more than 300 to please donate any money on their way out because Cr Ablett has spent up to $500 on flyers. When asked about the hefty donation to the residents’ cause, Cr Ablett said, laughing: “Everyone has been putting in at some point through this and it’s something I’m really passionate about - and the flyers had to be paid for.”

Some suggestions to put the great location to use included restaurant, petrol station, another ‘cracker’ pub, wedding reception venue with a view of the bay, motel and a community centre. All great suggestions... let’s keep our eyes peeled for works to come! AT A community meeting to Stop Brookland Greens share house development on Monday
RECENTLY one of our Berwick News journalists had an interesting foray into Greater Dandenong politics, filling in as a reporter at the Dandenong council meeting. He was very pleased to see a number of sandwiches set on the media table, something that never occurs at Casey council which he normally covers. The sandwiches were so impressive that one of the Dandenong councillors even came over to the media table to see if there were any that tickled her fancy. WHERE was all the mad soccer followers? A recent Casey Association Football Reference Advisory Committee meeting had to be cancelled due to a poor turnout. Only two Casey soccer clubs out of the
10 involved rocked up to the early December gathering so the next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 17 February. THE City of Casey stood for a minute’s silence at Tuesday’s council meeting in honour of former mayor of Berwick John Byron who recently passed in his sleep. Mr Byron served as a City of Berwick councillor, prior to the amalgamation, for 11 years. Councillor Mick Morland spoke about his generous spirit and joked over his hiring skills, as it was Mr Byron who employed current Casey CEO, Mike Tyler. Mr Byron served as mayor in 1984 and is much remembered for his support of voluntary groups. Mr Byron was also the president of the Webb Street Opp Shop in Narre Warren. IT’S not every day that a photographer lives and breathes the topic he’s snapping but on Wednesday that happened to one of our Star News colleagues - he got caught short in Cannons Creek without a dunny in sight! With his camera pack and directions at the ready, this photographer was waiting for his subject to arrive when he needed to go. The incident comes as a timely reminder that a thunder box on The Bluff is busting to be built!

Council bids to up rates By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CASEY council plans to increase residents’ rates by more than the 2.5 per cent rate cap which was just introduced this year. On Tuesday the City of Casey announced it was applying for a rate cap variation next month, and has written to the Essential Services Commission (ESC) to outline its proposal. However a spokesman for Casey council has refused to say how much of an increase the council would apply for from the ESC. It’s understood Casey will be required to prove that ratepayers and the community were consulted during the process. In December community views were sought during the council’s focus group and online consultation, according to
the spokesperson. Mayor Sam Aziz conceded this would be an unpopular decision but said the council was acting in the best interests of ratepayers. “While the easier route would be to work within the imposed rate cap of 2.5 per cent and slash essential services, by signalling its intent to seek a rate cap variation council is acting responsibility to shield residents from a future infrastructure black hole and service cuts, he said. “Council is taking steps now not to unduly burden ratepayers in future years. “Given the cumulative impacts of rate capping, Casey’s need will be higher in later years if council doesn’t act this year. “Without an addition to the cap, the reality is residents
moving into new estates will go years before infrastructure including family and children’s centres and sporting ovals and pavilions is constructed, if at all. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association Rex Flannery slammed the council’s decision. “The community deserves better by not having people keep putting their hands in their pockets, he said. “We support rate capping purely and simply because that’s what the community is calling out for. On Tuesday Shadow Minister for Local Government David Davis criticized the State Government’s rate capping plan, noting that 21 councils - including Casey - had formally sought an exemption from the cap.
Gunman on the loose after shot A DRIVER was shot at after trying to break up an argument between a man and a woman in Cranbourne on Australia Day. The 36-year-old Carrum Downs man was driving along Clarendon Street about 6pm on Tuesday 26 January when he noticed a man and a woman having an argument outside a house.
The driver slowed down and made it known to the pair that he saw the argument before driving off. Minutes later when the driver was at the intersection of Clarendon and High Street, the man involved in the argument caught up with him and fired a shot at the victim’s car. The bullet hit the car but the
driver was uninjured. The victim then drove off and called police. Police are still searching for the man and woman who had been arguing after they fled. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or to submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH LYNBROOK Primary School will be seeing doubles for years to come as this year’s wave of preps break a school record. All dressed up in pristine navy and orange uniforms, four sets of twins started prep at the school on Thursday 28 January. A record breaking number, the eight boys and girls will be a part of the 147 preps which make up eight prep classes to
start at the school. Prep co-ordinator Xuan Lee said they were the largest number of twins the school has ever had in one year level. “We’ve only had one or two sets in a year level at the most so it’s record breaking for the school,” Ms Lee said. An excited Ms Lee said the school makes special arrangements for its twins. “We respect the parent’s choices but we do suggest split-
ting up twins in neighbouring classrooms to allow them to develop their own personalities,” she said. Five-year-old sisters Sneha and Nesha have been split up but they were looking forward to meeting up at recess. And after just 20 minutes Nesha had already made her mind up about her new prep teacher. “My teacher is a silly sausage,” she said.

SHE’S collected all things nature since she was a child and now Brianna Loves gets to instil her passion for science and sustainability onto her students at Hampton Park Primary School. And for her inspired teachings in the field, Brianna was presented with the Casey Non-resident of the Year Award at the City of Casey’s Australia Day ceremony on Tuesday 26 January. It’s an award she owes to her colleagues. “I feel like I’m one of four parts of the school’s Kids Action Wellbeing team who won this award,” Brianna said. She said she was unsure of who nominated her for the local award but puts it down to the school’s willingness to embrace science and whole school wellbeing activities. “It’s such an honour and I’m really flattered but it’s definitely an award for the school. I wouldn’t have done what I’ve been able to do without everyone.” The Emerald resident was moved from her role as a grade five and six teacher to the school’s resident science, sustainability and environmental teacher three years ago. It is a role that Brianna has pioneered at the school with her degree from Monash University in science, environment and geography. Taking the reins of his life back By LACHLAN MOORHEAD AFTER his back surgery, Rick Beeby knew he’d get better. But for those children and adults living with a disability, the 69-year-old knew theirs was a burden they would be carrying for the rest of their lives. This moment of understanding led Rick to Riding for the Disabled (RDA) at Doveton’s Myuna Farm, where he has volunteered for more than a decade. It’s his commitment to RDA that saw Rick, the Doveton committee’s vice-president, awarded the Casey Senior Citizen of Year Award on Australia Day this month. “I used to drive trucks and I had some surgery done on my back which meant I had to give truck driving away, and I had to re-think what I was going to do for the rest of my life,” he said. “I think it was the fact that after surgery I was going to get better whereas a lot of people don’t, they have that disability and that’s it.” Rick’s involvement with the RDA has seen him cover every aspect of the program, including running coaching sessions for riders with disabilities, accompanying riders to competitions, co-ordinating volunteers, and collecting horse feed and repairing fences. Rick has helped enrich the lives of many kids, including a 10-year-old boy who was unable to walk until he joined RDA. “He’s a young fella who was not able to sit up straight because of a lack of core strength,” Rick said.
Rick Beeby with Gerry, one of the Riding for the Disabled horses. 149540 “But he started riding and now he can weight bear and now he can walk. “At the start he couldn’t even sit up straight.”

Picture: ROB CAREW goes way back. “I sort of grew up in an area where there was a lot of horses, in Hornsby, New South Wales,” he said.
“Then later on I worked as a jackaroo and a station-hand mustering and droving. “Then my oldest daughter became interested in horses. At one stage I had three children doing pony club.” Rick’s daughters, Crystal and Mim, and his wife, Robyn, were at the Council Chambers last Tuesday night to watch their dad and husband receive the Australia Day award, an honour he didn’t expect to win but one he was thrilled with. “It’s always something I’ve loved doing - combining my love of horses with helping people who have disabilities,” Rick said. Doveton was also recognised a second time at the Casey Australia Day Awards when the Doveton Show was named the Casey Community Event of the Year. This year’s Doveton Show attracted more than 27,000 visitors, with a variety of activities, displays and entertaining acts made available to the community. Joining Rick to receive council awards on Australia Day was the Casey Citizen of the Year Cathy Wieckmann, the Casey Young Citizen of the Year Oliver Thomson, the Casey Sportsperson of the Year Chandlar Felton, and the Casey Non-resident of the Year Brianna Loves. The Casey Fund-raising Event of the Year Award went to the Halloween Spooktacular Party, while Livvi’s Place Open Day and the Narre Warren Fire Brigade Open Day were given high commendations.

THE City of Casey now offers online booking for hard rubbish collections to complement its pre-booked service. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said council residents could pre-book up to two hard rubbish collections per household each calendar year. To book, visit www.casey. vic.gov.au to complete the online form or phone Cleanaway on 9729 9100. Book by 5 pm Wednesday for a hard rubbish collection the following week. An SMS reminder is sent on the Friday prior to the collection. All hard rubbish should be placed out for collection by Sunday night on the weekend before the scheduled week of collection. Residents must advise if mattresses, green waste or tyres will be placed out for collection at the time of booking. “The alternative booking method will provide greater efficiency for users who will be able to go online 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, to book in timely collections to suit their household,“ Cr Aziz said.

NARRE Warren Calisthenics Club, continues to grow and has enjoyed another successful 2015 competition season. As the club logo promotes, ‘Make friends for life’ and this is what its members do. Last year marked many milestones for a number of girls from the club. The club has girls who have been members for 10, 15 , 20, 30 and 35 years. It has had success year after year across all sections, but is proud that it has kept the girls at the club doing a sport they love for so long. Calisthenics develops strength, flexibility, deportment and co-ordination through its
physical items - march, freearm, rods and clubs - while at the same time enhancing grace and poise in aesthetics (an item with elements of ballet) and encouraging girls to express themselves and perform with confidence through singing and dancing. Calisthenics is such a diverse sport and a team sport. The club welcomes new members to come and have a go. Complimentary classes, to come and try calisthenics, are on offer to new members in February. Former cala girls or those who have experience as a dancer or who are just keen to give it
a try can drop by on 1 February and join. The club competes at local competitions and the juniors, intermediates and seniors go to the Royal South Street competitions in Ballarat (the highlight for every girl - which is performing at Her Majesty’s Theatre). It holds hold weekly classes in the performing arts hall at Fleetwood Primary School, Fleetwood Drive, Narre Warren. Rock radio By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S the radio show putting Casey on the map in Tamworth and it’s got just the right amount of country glitz and glamour to be broadcast around the world. ‘Casey Radio Rocks Tamworth’, hosted by Bob Halsall and local councillors Wayne Smith and Louise Berkelmans, has become a hit at Tamworth Country Music Festival in the past three years. Broadcasting insightful interviews about anything but country music from a conference room in Tamworth, Cr Smith said, the outof-towners are becoming big names themselves. “We’re getting a reputation, we have high profile country musicians asking us if they can come on our show,” he said. “It’s pretty special - they give us a one-on-one concert.” The trio broadcast three hours of music and interviews over the fiveday festival from Friday 15 to Sunday 24 January. “We spoke to 52 acts for 15
minutes each and some of those included big names like Troy CassarDaley, Adam Brand, Adam Harvey and Lyn Bowtell,” Cr Smith said, along with at least six Casey musicians lucky enough to play alongside country music greats. And having gotten to know the stars over the years, Cr Smith said, the interviews are casual and fun. “In our first year we knew nothing about the festival or country music so we’d chat to them about them - Louise, Bob and I are not country music fans,” he said, laughing. “But the performers loved talking to us because of that and Troy Cassar-Daley said it was the best interview he’d done in Tamworth because we wanted to hear about his family and kids.” Casey Radio is the only out-oftown station to broadcast from the event. “It’s hard work but we love it hundreds of thousands of people go up for the festival, and Casey is definitely on the map in Tamworth,” he said.

IT was raining rainbows of fun at Casey’s Colour Run. All ages took on the vibrant event at Akoonah Park in Berwick, on Saturday 30 January, where they could embrace a challenge of 5km or 2.5km. Teams of joggers took on the multicolour race, organised by the City of Casey’s youth volunteer committees. As bodies dressed in white got splattered with pink, red, green, blue and yellow powder, other youths had the chance to access information from the Casey 360 Mobile Youth Information Centre.

SALE CARES FOR KIDS BUY Property Direct and Mainline Developments have partnered with Menzies Caring for Kids by donating a newly constructed luxury home in Langwarrin to raise funds for ongoing community work. Menzies Caring for Kids is a non-profit organisation which supports young people who can no longer live with their natural families. Founded in 1865 and established in Frankston in 1901, Menzies Caring for Kids has provided a high standard of support for young people in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula region. Through funding and partnerships Menzies Caring for Kids equips these people with the life skills they need to lead safe, independent and fulfilled lives. Menzies Caring for Kids is run by a dedicated committee of volunteers and therefore all resources and donations received are committed to the sole purpose of helping others. In a joint effort between Buy Property Direct and Mainline Developments, the Menzies Caring for Kids Charity House Auction plans to raise awareness of this worthy cause and, more importantly, raise much-needed money to continue working in the local bayside community. All the proceeds of the auction funds will extend work started among a coalition of Frankston North schools, providing paediatric and occupational therapy to minimise the disadvantage on students who might not normally be able to access these health services. It is the first project of its type to be operating in a school and is proving to be an outstanding success, with statistical and anecdotal evidence highlighting early benefits for the schools, students and their families.
Mainline Developments completed construction on the four-bedroom, twobathroom home in January. The new property features a spacious double car garage, entertaining alfresco area, generous master en suite, fully landscaped gardens and host of full turnkey inclusions, making this ideal for a prospective buyer who wants to move straight in. Buy Property Direct managing director David Brewster praised Menzies Caring for Kids for its important work. “It’s a great initiative and it’s been outstanding to see the number of trades and suppliers get on board to help us achieve the project,” he said. “Every dollar from the auction will be retained by the charity, so it’s a great
opportunity for one lucky real estate buyer to give back to Menzies and the local community.” An overwhelming number of supporting partners have volunteered to help the cause with more than 35 individual media, planning and construction businesses partnering the project. Menzies Caring for Kids will commit every dollar raised from the sale to assist young people living in the area. Buy Property Direct will be marketing the property for auction in the $450,000 plus range. Menzies president Kevin Johnson welcomed the funds. “Menzies Caring for Kids is an organisation dedicated to supporting young
NEW E AUG SLT O OTS P T
people in Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula. “We are over the moon with what these guys are doing for the kids we support. “As a result of this particular project we will be able to support disadvantaged kids who, through no fault of their own, do not get the medical attention they require. “Menzies cares about kids!” The property at 48 Tamara Circuit, Langwarrin, will be sold through a public auction at noon on Saturday 27 February and is open for inspection every Saturday and Sunday from 11.30am to noon until the auction. A full list of all supporting partners can be found on the project website.

PROPERTY WITH POTENTIAL

BEACONSFIELD
THIS newly renovated homestead is in a sought after location on about 2.47 acres of sub-dividable land. The unique property offers the perfect hobbyfarm lifestyle, priceless space for the children to run around and a solid investment for the future. The home has a stunning, newly appointed kitchen lined in Caesarstone, with three ovens, a dishwasher, butler’s pantry and striking Italian tiles. Both formal and informal living areas are on offer - a cosy fireplace to the lounge/ dining and a large outdoor pergola or alfresco area perfect for summer days. Three bedrooms complete the home plus a large study or fourth bedroom or nursery and functional and spacious laundry with access to outside. A large shed with machinery shelter on one side is perfect for the everyday tradesman or car enthusiast, ideal for working from home. With the growing population in Beaconsfield and urban growth corridor, the land has recently been zoned medium density and can be sub-divided to smaller house lots.

Pre-kinder sessions THE Hallam Community Learning Centre is running Pre Kinder sessions for three and four-year-olds. The centre prides itself on preparing the children that attend these sessions for all sorts of things that might come their way. Last year, they learnt about different countries and were lucky enough to have had some mums come and sing happy birthday and nursery rhymes in
their native languages. Other topics covered included science with erupting volcanos, Da vinci paintings during art time and nature and wild animals. The centre can’t wait to see what the staff have in store for 2016. The kids also hosted morning tea for Mother's and Father’s Day making yummy scones with jam and cream. Currently, there are vacancies for the 2016 sessions so why
not call on 9703 1688. The centre has undergone a massive renovation since November last year, thanks to the City of Casey, and staff are looking forward to welcoming the groups, starting Monday 8 February. Final rites on Saints By RUSSELL BENNETT “I DON’T want to be known as Pete Levey - the last president of the Nyora Football Club.” The Saints president doesn’t really want to talk about what he fears may happen to his club if it’s forced into joining the Alberton Football Netball League. But he has to. Nyora has until 11 March to make a written submission on AFL Gippsland’s senior football review draft recommendations, which also include the reformation (of sorts) of the West Gippsland Football Netball League. Levey and his fellow committee members will throw everything at their submission. “I think we could put the most compelling argument together that they’d ever see,” he said. As an Ellinbank and District Football League (EDFL) club, Nyora’s average distance of travel for away games is 39.6 kilometres. If the Saints joined Alberton, that would jump to 69.4. Levey said this was a huge worry for his club. “How’re we going to get juniors when they only have to go eight ki-
lometres down the road to Poowong (instead) and the most they’d have to travel is 40 minutes?” he said. Levey is also fearful about what the move to Alberton might do to his club’s bottom line, with none of Nyora’s traditional rivals in that league. “Our biggest home game has always been against Poowong,” he said. “Would the AFL ever consider Carlton not playing against Collingwood?” Last Friday morning in Morwell, AFL Gippsland released its draft recommendations for its senior leagues. And they make for compelling reading. West Gippsland will be reformed as a nine-team competition including Bunyip, Cora Lynn, Garfield, Kooweerup, Nar Nar Goon, Dalyston, Kilcunda-Bass, Korumburra-Bena and Phillip Island. The EDFL will also become a nine-team competition - made up of Buln Buln, Catani, Ellinbank, Lang Lang, Longwarry, Neerim Neerim South, Nilma Darnum, Poowong, and the Warragul Industrials. That leaves Nyora in the south Gippsland-based Alberton league.
Three of the region’s other leagues - Gippsland, North Gippsland, and Mid Gippsland will remain unchanged. AFL Gippsland region general manager and Senior Football Review committee chair Travis Switzer said the bulk of the feedback received from clubs had been “pretty positive”. “I’m not just saying that,” he said. “It’s been really positive apart from a couple of clubs. “There’s no doubt we have to do some work with Nyora and we’ve explained to them that this is not set in concrete and we’ll be working with them to try and come up with a solution that works best for them. “The thing with Nyora is that they had been struggling for a while, so we felt it might be an opportunity to look at playing in a different competition and maybe reinvigorating the club. We looked at their postcode analysis and they’ve got about 30 registered players from Korumburra at the moment ... but we also understand that their travel will increase. That’s the biggest challenge they’ve got.”
The Nyora footy club and its players will have a much longer trip to navigate down the South Gippsland Highway if they’re moved into the Alberton Football Picture: ROB CAREW Netball League. 141016
South East bears brunt By DAVID NAGEL THE cross-commission boundaries that exist between AFL Gippsland and AFL South East are unique to country football -when one acts the other has no choice but to prick up its ears and listen. And that’s certainly the case after AFL Gippsland released its draft recommendations for 2017 after a thorough and comprehensive review of its senior leagues last week. The review findings tell us a lot about AFL Gippsland, but two things in particular stand out. Number one is the satisfaction that exists with its competition structures from its core to its Eastern boundary, with the Gippsland, Mid-Gippsland and North Gippsland Football Netball Leagues remaining untouched for 2017. But the activity that has taken place on its Western border, with the reshaping of the Alberton and Ellinbank leagues, and the resurrection of the West Gippsland Football Netball League, well that tells us that this was an area in need of some serious resuscitation. And it’s an area that affects AFL South East, in particular its dreams and hopes of having divisional football in the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) in the near future. The existing Ellinbank clubs that will head to West Gippsland -Bunyip, Cora Lynn, Garfield, Kooweerup and Nar Nar Goon -well they sit on that
cross-commission boundary, while current SEFNL clubs like Beaconsfield, Officer (ROC), Pakenham and Tooradin have a long and proud history in the West Gippsland League. Therefore, it seems strange that AFL South East did not have a seat at the review table to discuss this area of the region, but there has been some dialogue. “There has but at the moment they’ve got their own challenges, the South East,” AFL Gippsland region general manager Travis Switzer said. “At this stage, we’re probably only really concerned about our clubs. They wanted to come back to Gippsland to play their football. So when we thought about 27 teams within that geographical area, we feel that these three competitions are fairly even at the moment.” The problem is we will have four nine-team competitions within a small geographical space in 2017, with Alberton, Ellinbank, West Gippsland and South East all fitting the mould. AFL South East region general manager Jeremy Bourke said recent history would suggest the nine-team format presented its challenges. “We acknowledge that it was not ideal for SEFNL to have nine teams in its inaugural season last year and we want to engage with Gippsland about what the opportunities are for the future,” Bourke said. “I’ve read the review and all of it makes sense, there are
some very positive aspects to it and, once those competitions are settled and bedded down, we look forward to working with AFL Gippsland to work out ways to create some interaction between the leagues that border each other. “But when we look at the big picture, we’ve got four leagues, in close proximity, with nine teams each. I understand the review, I understand the research and diligence that has been behind those recommendations, but now there’s an opportunity to build on that further and create something even more dynamic.” Bourke and AFL South East have had different priorities to AFL Gippsland over the last 12 months, with the formation of SEFNL and governance issues associated with the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League taking up the bulk of its time. But the time is now right for a review of its own; expected to commence in March and be completed by the middle of the season. “We need to look at our growth strategy, and that clearly includes divisional football,” Bourke said. “There is the very real possibility of having something in place for 2017, but what that is and what it looks like I don’t know right now. But by communicating with all of our stakeholders, we’re confident we will have a plan, even if it’s not implemented in 2017, a plan in place for the future.”

Seymour opens with a bang By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKETROUND 15 (Day 1) NOT even a wet-deck seemed to trouble Casey-South Melbourne (249) posting one of its biggest scores of the season as James Seymour hit his straps once more. Northcote’s bowlers - led by Melbourne Stars all-rounder Marcus Stoinis (3/49) - couldn’t pop the opening wicket quickly enough as the new ball started to grow dull from the wet outfield at Casey Fields. The troubling conditions didn’t halt Seymour’s (71) scintillating debut season with Casey as he started the day in fifth-gear. Anything that went near him was cannoned into the fence or beyond as his 10 fours and two sixes helped push him over the 500-run mark and into fifth overall for the league aggregate. In contrast to Seymour’s powerful bludgeoning, the Swans other opener Ashan Wijayakumara (3) - brought up to fill the spot of injured ace Kasun Suriaratchie - occupied the crease, but struggled to rotate the strike as he eventually succumbed to Sam Harbinson (2/28). It brought Devin Pollock (35) to keep the tempo going, especially once Seymour misjudged spinner Matthew Short (3/61). Short finally got his man after being tonked around the park by Seymour in the opening few overs. The middle order was resolved to stay at the crease, and while it didn’t set the scene with a big century or even half-ton, the contributions were crucial to pushing the Swans’ case for a fourth victory. Captain Lachlan Sperling (26) hit a
few clean shots into the fence but after an hour at the crease, his time would be cut short. Michael Wallace (21) then carried on the dogged effort to see the Swans to the lunch break. Good stands formed one after another but none solidified into a match-changer as Wallace, Pollock, Dylan Hadfield (13) and first XI debutant Blake Mills (18) got their eyes in but couldn’t cash in for a big prize. Making his return to the line-up, after a side strain sustained as a netbowler against the Australians for the Boxing Day Test, Nathan Lambden (39) dug in alongside Leigh Diston (9) to keep the scoreboard ticking along and take the hosts well past 200. “The total was good, considering what the conditions were like at the start of the day,” Sperling said. “It was pretty slow - hard to drive into the ground - so the batters did quite well actually and a tough wicket to get in on.” Seymour praised Seymour’s efforts at the start as well as the gutsy lowerorder partnership from Lambden and Diston. “He’s a class above - just the way he’s striking the ball and nice and clean through the line - got to be happy with that,” Sperling said. “The whole middle order really dug in there and to get through the day - especially at the end of the day between Lambden and Diston. “We were 8/190 and they put on 40 or 50 and got us to 250 and that was pretty crucial actually.” There’s nothing complicated about Casey’s day-two plans: get in and start taking wickets. “We’re confident our bowling at-
Casey keeper-batsman Devin Pollock punches one through short leg. 149621 tack can get 10 wickets - just have to stay patient, bowl the right areas and take the chances,” Sperling said. “It’s pretty simple and should be good. “Results-wise, we probably haven’t got the wins and losses we would like, but there are signs we’re more competitive in games for a lot longer.” Considering Northcote is sixth and well on its way to playing a big part in this season’s finals, Casey’s efforts will have shocked many, especially with its
other big-hitting opener Kasun Suriaratchie sidelined. It will be tough work defending a meagre target, but Dandenong (157) has no option with a loss against Melbourne Uni (0/27) likely ending its chances of making the Premier finals. After tons of rain lashed Melbourne this week, it was no surprise the hosts sent Dandenong in to bat. A textbook strong-start via skipper Tom Donnell (30) and Brett Forsyth (15) was hacked

apart quickly by the Melbourne Uni attack. Led by James Bett (5/34) and Steven Reid (4/35), the scholars put Dandenong into trouble fast as the Panthers lost the first five scalps for a scant 58. The resistance was led by James Nanopoulos (38) and David Alleyne (24), but their wickets joined the procession soon after as the side lurched just past 150 on a tricky-day at the crease.

Taking their training indoors at ICON Arena, Dandenong Stingrays pre-season has stepped up a notch before next week's first intra-club clash. Picture: DANDENONG STINGRAYS
Fresh batch of ’Rays to shine By JARROD POTTER WITH 2015 in the rear-view mirror, the New Year is well and truly underway for the Dandenong Stingrays. The highs and lows of last season - with seven drafted into the AFL contrasting against a preliminary final loss - hope to be exceeded by the next batch of up-and-coming Stingrays. Pre-season training was taken up a gear this week as Dandenong traded Shepley Oval for an indoor run-around at ICON Arena, Doveton, as coach Craig Black and his staff start to whittle down the list. With 83 footballers currently doing a pre-season, there’s a lot to do before the first match on 26 March, but Black believes the list will be strong heading
into the new campaign. “I think we’ve got a really even group,” Black said. “We keep setting the standards and the old saying ‘if you do the same thing, you’ll get the same result’ - so as a coaching group we’re challenging each other - and the players who were on our list last year, who are now our 18 year olds, are trying to lift the standards too.” AFL Academy tandem Josh Battle and Myles Poholke have barely stopped since the end of the TAC Cup season, going into pre-season training at the AFL level before heading across to America. “We’ve been pretty lucky with the academy kids,” Black said. “Josh Battle got to spend a
couple of weeks at St Kilda and Myles Poholke spent a couple of weeks at Essendon preChristmas then the two of them went on the academy trip across to Florida. “They’re all back now and I think we’ve got a few kids who haven’t been involved in our program before that are setting really good standards.” Battle, Reece Piper and Jordan Stewart lead the names from the south eastern area, but Black said there was plenty of time left for a few more names to bob up - especially with intra-club matches starting next weekend. “First intra-club practice game is next Sunday 7 February, so it’s a really good opportunity for the boys - especially the guys we haven’t seen play a lot,” Black said.
THE West Gippsland Warriors got off to a flying start to their 2016 Victorian Country Cricket League (VCCL) Melbourne Country Week campaign with an emphatic win over Colac on Monday and an equally impressive victory over Seymour the following day. The Warriors won the toss on a green Yarrambat War Memorial Oval deck on day one and elected to bowl. The decision reaped early rewards with Colac well and truly on the ropes at 8/80 after their first 30 overs. But as the pitch quickened up under the early afternoon sun, batting seemed to become that little bit easier. It was either that, or the Colac tail-end throwing caution to the wind with more expansive stroke play - or a combination of both - that saw them ultimately post 138 in the 45th over. Jack Parker (32 not out) and Nathan McNamara (25) led the way with the willow for Colac, while the seam bowling trio of Clyde’s Kyle Brooke (3/25), Pakenham Upper-Toomuc’s Scott Clark (3/20), and Devon Meadows’ Matt Hutchinson (3/29) were the stars with the ball for West Gippsland. The Warriors lost Chris Bright early in their innings after he scooped a simple catch to mid-off off the toe of his bat, but that’s where the joy ended for Colac on the field. All told, they dropped 10 catches and

The aggressive lefthand top order bat combined brilliantly with opener Daniel McCalman (70), who took a cautious approach at the start of his innings but built with some sublime stroke-play of his own to effectively lead the Warriors (6/225) home. Clyde veteran John Simpson (39), gun Pakenham wicket keeper-batsman Rob Elston (25), and Emerald import Hashan Goonetilleke (23) also provided valuable runs in a superbly well-rounded Warriors effort. The balance of this side is its real strength with a seemingly unending list of options to turn to with either bat
or ball. On Tuesday, the Warriors again won the toss and sent their opposition in - this time restricting Seymour to 139 in 43 overs. Brooke again made his presence felt with the ball, snaring three wickets, while Hutchinson and Pakenham’s Jack Ryan claimed two apiece. The West Gippsland side then passed Seymour with just two wickets down and went on to score 260-plus for the loss of nine wickets, with Walker and Elston going on to record impressive half-centuries in a percentage-boosting win. The Warriors had Wednesday's opponent Warragul 3/61 off 18 overs in a contest shortened by rain to 32 overs at Endeavour Hills.

Last-ditch dramas By DAVID NAGEL THERE are 70 senior teams spread throughout the West Gippsland Cricket Association but it’s the battle between three in the Premier Division that is stealing the late-season spotlight. Merinda Park, Kooweerup and Tooradin are three quality sides -Koowee has won the last two premierships- but one is going to miss out on challenging ladder-leaders Pakenham and Cardinia for a crack at this year’s title. The most likely scenario is that Merinda Park will make it, leaving the Demons and Seagulls to fight for their cricketing lives -against each other- in the final round of the season. There are still two rounds remaining, but that clash between two of the heavyweight teams in the history of the Premier Division - well that’s the most mouth-watering clash of all. Saturday’s conclusion to round 12 went pretty much to script with the teams with the upper hand all converting their day-one dominance into victories. Merinda Park (5/253dec) was the big mover, jumping from fifth to third, after gaining outright points against Cranbourne Meadows (83 and 144). The Cobras kicked on from their overnight score of 3/242, batting for just two overs, to allow Dylan Cuthbertson (103 not out) to make his maiden Premier Division century. The Cobras then declared instantly for a second crack at the Rebels.
Cardinia’s Ben Parrott is about to fall to the brilliance of Tooradin wicketkeeper Tom Hussey, caught behind at Gunton Oval on Saturday. 149448

Initially, it was Chevy Dyall (34) and Shameera Weerasinghe (31) who threatened to derail the Cobras hopes, before Danny Diwell threw the ball to Jamie Smith (6/27) and the game instantly changed complexion. Smith took six wickets on the trot to turn a promising 2/98 scoreline into a shonky-looking 8/126. Chris Milne (2/13) finished off the job for the Cobras. Cardinia (159) was forced to work hard for its runs against Tooradin (131). Neil Barfuss (40), Alex Nooy (26) and Ben Parrott (20) proved to
be a solid top three for the Bulls, but they lost quick wickets leaving Luke Turner (23) to pick up the pieces. Jarred Thompson (4/26) was the star for the Seagulls who had the Bulls seven-down before they could pass their score. Pakenham (254 and 1/54) pair Russell Lehman (4/36) and Jack Ryan (4/46) packed too much of a punch for Upper Beaconsfield (115) on Saturday. The Maroons were never in the hunt, Matt Hutson (23) top-scoring as the ladder-leading Lions continued on their merry way.
And finally, Kooweerup (204) had no trouble in passing Emerald’s (123) mediocre score from day one. Michael Giles (47), Jess Mathers (38) and Chris Bright (33) were impressive for the winners while Clint Marsh took five wickets for the Bombers. This week Merinda Park host Kooweerup, Pakenham roll out the red-carpet for Cranbourne Meadows while the games between Cardinia and Upper Beaconsfield, and Tooradin and Emerald, will have bearing on the composition of the top four.

Tigers preying on Hawks By JARROD POTTER
Gehan Perera's quickfire 50 pushed Beaconsfield to the verge of victory on day one against Hallam Kalora Park. 149624 Picture: JARROD POTTER Twenty20 hero Brendan Johnson (20no) who saw out the remaining overs with Golding (9no) after Perera succumbed late in the day. Beaconsfield sits only 13 runs off a first innings lead after the solid response, leaving the declaration quandary about the only unknown factor left in the clash with the club’s first outright victory in the new competition a distinct possibility. Beaconsfield will host Cranbourne in the rescheduled DDCA Twenty20 qualifying final on Wednesday night at Perc Allison Reserve from 5.15pm. The only Turf 1 match to get under way saw Dandenong West (167) post a solid target, especially considering the hor-
rendous conditions that have bucketed Greaves Reserve in the past week. The Hawks sunk their talons into the Bulls’ top order as only Sam Bracey (58) stood tall. His resilient knock was supported down the line by Shaun Weir (46) and Peter Atkinson (25no). For the visitors, Will Whyte (3/25) and Jordan Hammond (2/34) troubled the hosts the most. Hallam Kalora Park (0/6) saw off the last handful of overs and remains well placed heading into day two. The remaining Turf 1 clashes have been rescheduled as one-dayers.

DDCA - ROUND 9 REVIEW (Day 1) honeyBEACONSFIELD’S moon period in DDCA continued over the weekend after going nine-tenths the way to victory on the first day against Hallam at Kalora Park. The Tigers did the sensible thing at the toss - winning and sending the Hawks in to deal with whatever gremlins might lurk on the rain-affected deck at Frawley Road. Those demons were present immediately as the Hawks’ top order fell 3/0 as Dylan Frietag (3/20) and Callan Tout (2/19) started the rampage. Matt Golding (3/40) spun his way through a trio of Hawks while Jarrod Williams (2/19) was equally proficient in snaring scalps. The middle order work from Rob Parker (34) was about the only highlight for Hallam as the visitors helped themselves to a bag of wickets. The late hitting after lunch added 31 but that would soon end at the hands of Tout. With a third left in the day’s proceedings, the Tigers pounced quickly on the opportunity. Gehan Perera (52) smashed another half-ton to continue his recent run of great form. Alongside Heshan Silva (24), the duo cultivated a strong opening stand only ripped apart by Silva’s LBW. It brought in last week’s

Aiming for next level By JARROD POTTER INSPIRATION to take his football to the next level and pride in his religious heritage are the great insights Musa Amin will take from his time with Bachar Houli. Amin, 18, from Narre Warren South, was one of four footballers to best embody the Bachar Houli Academy’s Wall of Success values. After making a great impact at Houli’s AFL Academy Camp - a six-day program for 35 up-and-coming Muslim footballers held last year - Amin was voted by his peers to receive a Bachar Houli Leadership Medal. The players voted for a person they thought met the academy’s criteria - including trust, voice, ability and pride among other necessary attributes - which Amin felt extremely privileged to receive. “That was an honour to get it - there were about 30 other blokes wanting that medal, but I got it in the end which was great,” Amin said. “I saw a website on the internet with Bachar Houli and his mission to come to his program and see if I could get an

- and I’m always asking questions as well.” It wasn’t just about footwork and strategy, as the Richmond defender Houli set up the camp to encourage the footballers to engage in leadership roles
and learn more about their religious and cultural background. It’s been a long road through junior football for Amin - starting with North Dandenong before heading to Endeavour Hills and finally ending up at Noble Park. He’s trying to make inroads towards an EFL senior debut this season with the Bulls after he was encouraged by Houli to make the most of his talents. There’s also the question of getting into the VFL, which Amin hopes to answer in 2017 after another year working on his game. “Just talking to him (Houli) whenever I can - he told me to carry on with my running and my weights to get fit for the season,” Amin said. “He’s encouraged me to try for VFL, which wasn’t a good go for me this year, so I’m playing Noble under19s and can hopefully get a senior gig sometime this year. “Hopefully, play round one - that’s my ambition - and I want to try and get into the VFL next year.” Amin wanted to thank Houli, former coach Dean Rice, brother Adam Amin and Rick Millman for their support.
Tense battle goes to the line HAMPTON PARK BOWLS TUESDAY - Australia Day re-arranged the normal bowling week with Tuesday’s midweek Pennant changed to Thursday. On Tuesday, two Hampton Park Bowlers still flew the representative flag at the Casey District Men’s pairs at Cranbourne. John Wright and Geoff Ampt started the day with a good semi-final win (257) and faced a Pakenham pair (Damian Hudson and Ryan Drummond) in the final in the afternoon. Unfortunately the Pakenham players were too consistent and won a tense and close battle 18-15. THURSDAY - Midweek pennant saw both Hampton Park teams score wins. At Pound Road, Division One had a comfortable 34 shot victory over Vermont South. Geoff Ladner, Ron Beverly, Helen Lambert and Denise Eastick led from lunchtime and finished with a strong 39-14 win. Closer wins by Val Moore, Ann Westwell, Ellen Smith and Chris Hendrie (21-19) and Marion Battaglia, Toni Sutton, Andrew Brandolin and Neville Hendrie (19-12) added to the result. Hampton Park (1) 16-79 defeated Vermont South (3) 0-45. Division Three had the long trip to Elsternwick Park. On a day interrupted by rain, it held its concentration for an excellent 51 shot win. The win was set up by Bob Nicol, Jim Westwell, Rob Woff and Peter Hayden who won 41-9. Ian Kitt, June Damon, John Nunan
and Geoff Ampt had a comfortable 3113 win and although down on the card late in the game, Lou Soligo, Aaron Ottaway, Gwen Clough and Ray Wood scored five shots in the last two ends for a 19-18 win. Hampton Park (2) 16-91 defeated Elsternwick Park (2) 0-40. FRIDAY - Semi-finals of the Casey District Champion of Champions were held at Cranbourne RSL. Hampton Park was represented by its singles champions Helen Lambert and Laurie Edwards. Both were unfortunately beaten. SATURDAY - Hampton Park finished the week with two losses and a ‘lucky’ win. Division One travelled to Mentone and suffered its worst loss for the season, losing all rinks. Closest was John Wright, Peter Hayden, Shane Collins and Steve Barnes (20-30), while Geoff Ampt, Jack Collins, Chris Barnes and Laurie Edwards lost 15-29. John Nunan, Andrew Brandolin, Ian Bartlett and Larry Simpson went down 10-38 while Shane Hardy, Sean McDonald, Neville Hendrie and Warwick Hardy never got into any rhythm losing 6-44. Mentone (2) 18-141 defeated Hampton Park (1) 0-51. Division Three were at Sandringham for a disappointing loss. Jaime Lehmann, Marion Battaglia, Toni Sutton and Denise Eastick were the only winners (17-16) while Aaron Ottaway, Ellen Smith, Ron Beverly and Chris Hendrie drew 16-16. Saturday Division Two Cranbourne RSL 138 defeated Elsternwick Club 38 THE RSL demolished Elsternwick Club in a powerful display of bowling with all rinks winning but none better than Wally Ballard’s 40 shot win. Reviews and news…
Suzuki is swift and popular By ALISTAIR KENNEDY TEN years without any significant change to exterior design is almost unheard of in the car industry but that’s the situation with the Suzuki Swift which continues to defy conventional wisdom by selling in consistently high numbers year-in and year-out. Indeed, the popular little Suzuki finished the 2015 sales race in third place in the 30-model Light Car category, beaten only by heavyweights Mazda2 and Toyota Yaris. The current second generation Swift has been on sale since 2011 with the next generation expected in 2017. Much of the success of Swift has been its widespread appeal, traversing both age and gender boundaries. With its tall, neat and angular design, it’s not only a great looking car, it’s also very practical. For a 3.85-metre car there’s a surprising amount of interior space with plenty of headroom at both front and rear, although the sloping roof does make entry into the rear seats a bit awkward for taller passengers. The front seats have a good spread of fore and aft adjustment and the driver’s seat can be raised and lowered. The only other negative is the car’s very small (210-litre) boot meaning that the 60/40 split rear seat back is likely to get plenty of use. There are four Swift variants: GL,
GL Navigator, GLX and Sport. Two engines are offered, both fourcylinder petrol units. The Swift GL, GL Navigator and GLX get a 1.4-litre that generates 70 kW of power and 130 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. Fuel consumption is listed at 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions at 132 grams per km. We averaged 6.3 litres per 100km during our week-long test. Unlike many so-called ‘sports’ models, the Swift Sport has added engine and dynamic performance. It has a larger engine, at 1.6 litres with 100 kW and 160 Nm, to back up its firmer suspension, sporty body kit and enhanced interior. Transmission options are five-speed manual and four-speed automatic in the GL and four-speed auto only in the GLX. Swift Sport has a six-speed manual or CVT with seven ‘manual’ settings. Standard safety equipment in all models is fairly basic but does include seven airbags (including a driver’s knee ‘bag) as well as ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist and electronic stability control. These are still enough to give Swift the maximum five-start ANCAP rating. All models above the entry-level
MODEL RANGE GL 1.4-litre petrol five-door hatch: $15,990 (manual or automatic) GL Navigator 1.4-litre petrol five-door hatch: $17,490 (manual or automatic) GLX 1.4-litre petrol five-door hatch: $21,990 (automatic)
Suzuki Swift s neat and angular styling is proving to be timeless. GL also get front foglights while the GLX and Sport come with LED daytime running lights. Automatic variants also add a hillhold function. Again infotainment features are fairly Spartan. Bluetooth connectivity is standard in all models and is quick and intuitive to pair and there’s a handy dashmounted USB socket. As the name suggests the GL Navigator adds satellite navigation which
is also standard in the GLX and Sport as is a colour multi-function control screen. Steering is nicely weighted and gives good feedback. Automatic transmissions mated to small engines can be a challenge but not so in the Swift. During the urban section of our drive changes were smooth and timely. Our current test was in the Swift GLX but we’ve driven the Sport previously and, while its punchy engine
doesn’t exactly turn the car into a hot hatch, it does offer a fair bit of fun at an extremely modest price. We’ve heard of a number of former boy racers who grew up driving the Swift GTi back in the 1980s making the switch. The outstanding 2105 sales performance shows that buyers are as keen as ever on its blend of neat looks, interior space and lively performance.
