Geelong commuters would wait until “the middle of the year” before rail services returned to normal, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said yesterday (Thursday). But a “stable” temporary timetable out Monday would give “greater certainty” about V/Line services operating normally and others replaced with buses over the next five weeks, she said at Geelong Railway Station. “This plan means people can plan their travel, their appointments and their lives with greater confidence, even if not all services are running as they should. “On the advice I’ve been given, passengers should expect to see a return to the full service timetable by June.” Wheel-wear problems have disrupted services over the few weeks and forced many rail commuters onto buses to complete their journeys. “We’ve seen a decrease in the wheel-wear rate but there’s still a way to go before it’s at a safe, acceptable level,“ Ms Allan said. But the government’s timeframe for resuming normal services was “not good enough” said Liberal South Barwon MP Andrew Katos. “We’re talking almost six months. This whole V/Line issue is still completely chaotic,“ Mr Katos said. “The concept of stability and certainty is completely contradictory. “It’s causing unacceptable disruptions to people’s daily lives - there’s still no certainty as to what’s going on. “And the June timeline is on advice from PTV and V/Line. These are the organisations who gave her incorrect advice a month ago. “I don’t think the public would have much confidence in Jacinta Allan.“ Interim V/Line chief Gary Liddle, who took over less than a week ago, said passengers could expect fewer replacement buses as Velocity trains began returning in April. A report due mid-March should “isolate the cause of the wheel-wear issues”, he said. Public Transport Users Association Geelong branch convenor Paul Westcott said commuters had yet to hear from a “key player” in the “fiasco”. Continued page 6

Fury at disability change By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Protesters fighting privatisation of disability services greeted Premier Daniel Andrews at Torquay on Thursday. Disability workers gathered outside Peppers the Sands Resort as State Government MPs met inside to discuss planning issues. Health and Community Services Union’s Lloyd Williams said the state privatisation would affect more than 5000 staff and 3000 disabled Victorians while breaking a promise Mr Andrews made before the 2014 election. “We’re all still shocked by this policy backflip,” Mr Williams said. “Before the election Daniel Andrews promised at numerous public events not to contract
out public disability services. Twelve months later they’ve now set out a process to work through how they can contract out.” Mr Williams said the government was using the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) as a cloak to cut costs, undermining the availability, stability and quality of the sector’s workforce. “The government’s aim is to transfer all public disability services and workers across to the forprofit and non-government sector where wages and other employment terms are up to 30 per cent less. “This will result in highly qualified and experienced disability workers walking away from the sector at a time when we should be focused on a staff attraction and retention strategy for the expected doubling of the workforce under the NDIS.
“Whichever way you look at it, privatising public disability services will create massive chaos and disruption to the delivery of quality disability services for people with a disability and their families for years to come.“ Mr Andrews denied any policy backflip. “The irony of people protesting against the NDIS and its role, in this city of all places, just makes no sense at all,” he said. “What we want to do is ensure that every client, carer and family member has access under the NDIS to the life-changing care and support that the scheme was designed to give them. “That means the workforce needs to grow, that means there will be a competitive model. Victoria is not going to stand in the way of that and let ideology potentially cost us an efficient rollout.“
A long time coming, Ali’s blonde hair makes the cut By ALANA MITCHELSON A Highton woman will cut off her long, blonde hair to celebrate her grandmother’s 10th year in remission from leukaemia. Now 20 but just a child when Barbara Baak’s cancer was diagnosed, Ali Gerischer aims to raise $20,000 for patient support services and research. Ali has previously coloured her hair and supported other family members during their shaves but considered the timing was right to make her own hairy sacrifice. The annual World’s Greatest Shave runs from 10 to 13 March but Ali will lose her hair on 2 May. “It just made sense since both my grandma and I are celebrating big milestone’s this year - I’m turning 21 and she’ll be 10 years in remission in May. “I won’t be doing anything else for my 21st, the shave is the way I’ll be celebrating. We’re very close. “My hair’s always been really long so it’s going to be a massive change but it’s worth it. It’s an awesome cause and I hope it can raise awareness for people to get behind it.” Ali recalled visiting her grandmother in hospital during the cancer scare. “I remember being really scared. My mum and aunty actually donated bone marrow and I remember seeing how physically painful that procedure was for them. “My grandma wasn’t supposed to make it. It was obviously a really hard time.” About 34 Australians are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma daily, or more than 12,000 each year. About 3000 will be diagnosed this year in Victoria alone. Leukaemia Foundation’s Stephanie Hechenberger said the World’s Greatest Shave helped fund life-saving research and “the emotional and practical support (families) need, free of charge”. “When you’re healthy it’s hard to understand the value of counselling, transport to and from chemotherapy, or being given a free place to stay during treatment if you come from the country. “But this support matters when you’re too sick to work and financial and emotional stress levels are high.”

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash which killed the pilot and three passengers after they left Moorabin Airport last Friday.
Seven injured Seven people have been injured in a headon collision near Winchelsea. Police said they were lucky to escape with minor injuries after a minivan carrying five international tourists collided with a sedan at the intersection of Cape Otway and Deans Marsh roads on Saturday morning.
Dunny solution Thirty public toilets will be upgraded in Geelong this financial year after council staff devised an “inventive solution” to stretch their $250,000 budget for replacing two facilities a year. The “cost-effective” floor re-coating and covering of urinal steps with chequer plate would “improve the cleanliness and aesthetics of aging public toilets” said councillor Lindsay Ellis.
Jobs funding A $5.4 million federal contract will help put 162 young people into work around Geelong, Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson has announced. The money for contract partners G Force Recruitment, Northern Futures and the Gordon Institute of TAFE was a “wonderful outcome for young people across our region” she said.
Mercy flight Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons has rushed to the side of fiancée Elissa Friday in London after the death of her mother. Cr Lyons said the death of Theresa Friday from cancer had devastated her family and friends but he would continue working on his mayoral duties while away.
Trailer heist Thieves have swiped a trailer holding cycling gear worth $250,000 from Corio. Police believed two men in a silver Toyota LandCruiser unhitched the trailer from a car in a motel car park at the intersection of Station Street and Princes Highway in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Viva Energy Australia, operator of Geelong’s oil refinery, has joined the discount fuel war traditionally dominated by Coles and Woolworths. Viva’s offering a saving of eight cents a litre for motorists taking up its new Shell card offer for the first three months, at any rate. Double Take assumes thereafter the fuel cost reverts to full price. Ironically, Viva, licensee of the Shell brand in Australia, still has a deal with Coles supermarkets, offering its four cent a litre discount. There is a little sting in the tail, however – the Shell card adds a monthly fee of $4.40. After receiving multi-millions of dollars for
various stadium upgrades, Geelong Football Club will now ask supporters to dip into their pockets for a $5 million contribution. The club announced at its AGM last week that it was facing debts of almost $9 million from stage two, three and four upgrades. Of the $90 million cost for stage four, the State Government will put in $75 million, Geelong’s council $6 million and the AFL $4 million, with the Cats coughing up the remaining $5 million. The club said it would approach “high net worth” supporters before going to rank-andfile members. Given the amount wanted, some could end up virtually paying for their own seat in the new stand. She might not be everyone’s idea of a Valentine but controversial politician Pauline Hanson (pictured) still hopes for a date with local fans on 14 February. Her party, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation, announced on Thursday that she would host a fundraising lunch at Curlewis Golf Club on Valentine’s Day to benefit Victorian candidates Elise Chapman and Simon Roylance. Noting that Curlewis was “the same venue where the Bronwyn Bishop chopperage saga unfolded”, Ms Hanson pledged to arrive in her “non-taxpayer-funded car”. She’ll have to – she’s already drained the remaining PR mileage from Bronnie’s chopper.

Years stack up for Jenny By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Spending 30 years with one employer was once the standard - these days it’s rare enough to deserve a medal. “I don’t think they actually hand out medals for the 30-year achievement, but I’d be happy with a badge, Bannockburn’s Jenny Pilgrim laughed during a break in her shift at Coles’ Geelong West supermarket. It’s an achievement the mum of two thought might not eventuate four years ago, when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. “The last few years have been tough, Jenny admitted quietly. The MS left Jenny battling fatigue and pain and began affecting her mobility. Working full-time became hard for Jenny, and she feared her health would jeopardise her job and ability to provide for her family. “Being diagnosed with MS brought so much stress to me and my family, and as a single mum I feared I wouldn’t be able to look after my children financially, Jenny said. “However the team at Coles were supportive and gave me the freedom and flexibility to work at my own pace, which I’m very grateful for." Jenny has worked a variety of jobs for Coles during her time, with time spent on the floor, interacting with customers, her favourite. “Customers have remained the constant during my time, when so much else has changed, Jenny said. “You get your regulars, and get to know people, and hear about their lives, both happy and sad. Jenny spent 20 years working at Coles Corio, as well as short stints at Manor Lakes and Leopold, including helping to set up new stores. Jenny now oversees stock and damaged goods, a position within the store that puts minimal strain on her physical health. “It’s tremendous to see how committed Jenny is to her work, even while dealing with unfortunate hurdles in her health. The team here are very appreciative,“ store manager Kane Harrington said.

Hospitals in crisis claim By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong hospital waiting lists are in “crisis, according to the opposition. Opposition health spokeswoman Mary Wooldridge said 1093 patients were waiting for elective surgery while only 66 per cent of emergency patients were treated within the recommended time, “significantly below the state average. She said other waiting times included almost four months for a first appointment with a specialist, 111 days for an urgent general surgery appointment, 83 for orthopaedic patients, 77 for urology, and almost three and a half years after a “routine referral to a specialist. “Daniel Andrews needs to explain to people in the Geelong region how he is going to fix his crisis in waiting times for Victorians needing surgery instead of always looking to blame others, Ms Wooldridge said. “Under Daniel Andrews we’re seeing more and more patients in regional Victoria waiting for health care. The blow-out in patients waiting for surgery is not surprising given it was Daniel Andrews who thought it was OK to scrap beds and operating theatres at the new Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the figure of 1093 patients waiting for elective surgery was 229 lower than a year ago when the coalition was still in power. “As a member of the former Liberal government that ripped $1 billion from our health system, it beggars belief that Mary Wooldridge would lecture anybody about health funding, Ms Hennessy said. “We’re working hard to rebuild our health and ambulance system after four years of Liberal cuts and neglect. Already, we’ve invested an additional $20 million in Barwon Health as part of a $2.1 billion investment across our health system in our first budget.

Big rains not so unusual my book, Weather Wonders of Geelong, shows that these sorts of summer storms are much more common. In fact, Geelong had more than 100mm in a day on 27 January 2005 with severe flash flooding and consequent damage. Geelong was 1.2C warmer than the 30-year normal from 1986 to 2015. Minimums were 1.9C warmer and maximums .5C higher than average. Four days of the month topped 30C, with a maximum of 43.7C on 13 January. Four thunder days were recorded while the maximum recorded wind gust at Breakwater was 72km/h, also on the 13th.
UNDER THE WEATHER Lindsay Smail The weather highlight of January was without doubt the incredibly severe storm of the 27th. The deluge delivered a total 39.4mm of at Breakwater’s official weather station for Geelong. Large hail accompanied flash-flooding from 24mm in just 20 minutes. Geelong’s western suburbs had even heavier falls, including 91mm in the Montpellier area of Highton. Manifold Heights recorded 81mm, the rest of Highton had 79mm and Herne Hill and Hamlyn Heights registered 65mm. Several casualties were reported, including a man burned by a lightning strike, along with numerous accounts of flooding and building damage.
DRENCHED: Flash-flooding submerges cars in a Geelong industrial estate last week. (Twitter) Despite the Bureau of Meteorology labelling it a “one-in-50-year storm” and some of the press going further with accounts of a “one-in-100-year storm”,

Dumpers costing Salvos too much By ALANA MITCHELSON
FUND-RAISER: Chris Hall wants to help the fight against MND. Picture: ALANA MITCHELSON
Wheels turning to help fund a cure By ALANA MITCHELSON DUMPED: The Salvos store behind piles of “extreme dumping”.
A Leopold man will wheel 50 kilometres in his wheelchair each month for the rest of the year to raise money for motor neurone disease (MND). Chris Hall hopes to raise $1500 for MND Australia by the end of the year to support research towards finding a cure for motor neurone disease. The 41-year-old’s interest in this cause developed when a work colleague with the disease became unwell. The cost of cleaning up “extreme dumping” at North Geelong’s Salvos store has reached $125,000 a year, according to the charity. An overflowing pile of donated items strewn across the entrance or rear of the store and flowing onto the pavement has become a regular problem but reached new heights after Australia Day last week. “The vast majority” of items dumped outside Geelong Salvos store were unsellable due to damage from exposure or careless disposal, volunteers said. Salvos Stores chief Matt Davis said dumping was an ongoing issue Australia-wide, costing a total $6 million a year and that the North Geelong store was “particularly bad”. “It’s been getting worse over time, not only the volume of overnight dumping but also the cost of waste disposal,” Mr Davis said. “The cost of regular waste disposal is increasing and I think that all of the dumping we receive is an indication that the expense of going to the tip is putting pressure on people. “The cost of disposal has been growing at twice the rate of our revenue for the past couple of years, eating into funds for important social work. “If that trajectory continues, we won’t be able to do what we exist to achieve and that’s to provide funding to The Salvation Army to assist those experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, addiction or unemployment.” He said Monday mornings and the day after public holidays were the worst. “Australia Day was our most recent public holiday and that’s one of the busiest days of the year for donations,” Mr Davis said. “Instead of spending time with customers,

Council’s bid to beat the rate cap GEELONG’S council wants permission to beat the State Government’s rate cap, the Essential Services Commission (ESC) has confirmed. The ESC published a list of 21 councils that had notified it of their intention to apply for a rate increase higher than the 2.5 per cent cap. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins set the statewide cap under a Fair Go Rates System. The ESC said councils still had to specify the rate increase they wanted.
In a statement, the ESC said some councils indicated they might not proceed with their application. Councils now have until 31 March to submit their applications to the ESC. The public applications would need to specify details of the rate increase including reasons for it, the opinions of ratepayers and the community, how the higher cap would be an efficient use of council resources and whether it represented value for money.
Applications would also have to reveal whether councils had considered “reprioritising” expenditures or alternative funding options. The ESC said its decisions would be made public, including explanations, by 31 May. Opposition local government spokesman David Davis said the applications were evidence of the government’s rate cap promise failing. “Because of Labor’s poorly managed process over the last 12 months, councils have hiked up their
rates and gouged residents,” Mr Davis said. “Now we learn they want exemptions to avoid the rate cap plan. “This Labor policy is a dog’s breakfast and Daniel Andrews needs to fix this immediately before people are even more out of pocket. “Cost-of-living pressures are already making life harder for Victorians, so what they don’t need is more bad decision-making by Daniel Andrews that makes those pressures even tougher.”
Trawler wins approval to resume fishing after sonar cable kills seabirds Controversial trawler Geelong Star has been given permission to resume fishing despite killing seven albatrosses. The trawler has previously been ordered to stop fishing several times after killing dolphins and seals. Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) has ordered the ship's operators to add measures to lessen the risk of killing more seabirds. After investigating the recent albatross mortalities, AFMA imposed conditions related to the use of a net sonde cable connecting a sonar device to the 95-metre factory trawler. But the cable wire hit seabirds seeking fish at the rear of the trawler, often seriously injuring or killing them. AFMA acting chief Nick Rayns said advice from seabird experts led to a significant reduction in the amount of wire exposed above the water. “The remaining length of wire that is in the air must have highly visible streamer lines on either side of the cable,” he said. “These measures are in addition to all existing seabird mitigation measures in place. “AFMA also requires the vessel to stop fishing immediately if a single seabird is killed by the net sonde cable until AFMA has reviewed how the interaction occurred. AFMA will continue to monitor the fishing operations of the Geelong Star with onboard observers and electronic monitoring to ensure that all conditions are being complied with.”
KILLER RECORD: The Geelong Star, pictured at berth, has been told to clean up its fishing procedures.

Local farms face another year of losses to rabbits after authorities pushed back the release date for a new control virus, according to a Bellarine Peninsula farmer. Graeme Brown was disappointed to learn the national release would be delayed until spring or possibly autum next year. “The right time to release it is right now because of the conditions. There’s not much for the rabbits to eat, so they’ll be more likely to go for the bait,” the 67-year-old said. “If it’s not released until spring I think it could be less successful. “In the meantime rabbits are eating all our crops and ruining our soil. It’s costing us 10 per cent of our income, not to mention the money we’re paying toward short-term fixes for getting rid of them. “In all my years of farming on the Bellarine, I have never seen rabbits as bad as they are this summer, especially in Marcus Hill and Curlewis. They’re becoming a real nuisance." Bellarine Landcare Group (BLG) was frustrated that the release of the calici virus strain would now miss the group’s Rabbit Action Bellarine campaign. “We’d based our program around the virus re-
lease date. It would have really supported our efforts,” said BLG’s Emma Camilleri. “I receive about six to seven rabbit inquiries a week. Our working group provides technical and practical advice as well as support in engaging with their neighbouring properties. “The project is funded until June, with the hopes to secure further ongoing funding after this date.” Once approved, the virus would be applied to carrots and oat baits to infect rabbits. Flies would spread the disease. Latest figures show rabbits are costing Australian agriculture over $200 million a year. Agriculture Department biosecurity manager for invasive animals John Matthews said the release was awaiting final approvals, consultation and further scientific advice. “Victorian rabbit populations have dramatically increased this spring, especially in Victoria’s far west and coastal regions like the Bellarine,” he said. “Reports from landowners indicate that populations have been exceedingly high this spring. One third of applications for free vials have come from Victorian landowners. “By next autumn when the virus is released landowners will be better placed to react and support the release.”

A Bellarine Peninsula golf course has been surrounded with a 3.9km rabbit-proof fence in an Australian first. Rabbits had been causing widespread damage and consequent safety concerns at Curlewis Golf Club, director David Sharp said. “They’re an all-round pest. Our golf course is about 60 hectares and it’s difficult to say but I reckon the rabbits have been in the thousands," Mr Sharp said. “They scratch, dig holes and, apart from spoiling course aesthetics, their activity can create ongoing hazard and safety issues for players and grounds staff alike. You can twist an ankle or lose your balance with rabbit holes in the ground. “Rabbits are also a huge threat to hundreds of
endangered native plants and animals. They compete with animals for food, devour native plants, destabilise native habitats and damage the soil. “The damage has certainly been worse this spring, probably in part due to a drier spring which would provide better breeding conditions.” Mr Sharp said rabbits had also impacted his adjacent family vineyard, with their holes and burrows complicating machinery access to vines. But golf club staff had already reported benefits from the fence since its installation in November, Mr Sharp said. “There are fewer rabbits. The golf club has been systematically destroying rabbit warrens and that should reduce what would otherwise be ongoing costs of eradicating them. “Land owners have an obligation to control rabbits. If all properties get on board we’ll be able to better control the situation on the Bellarine.” 11 GEELONG INDY Friday, 5 February, 2016

Gallery excellent on lean budget
Visions of inaction on Avalon
I thank Richard Worland for his comments regarding the “catch-up” needed by Geelong Gallery to become a foremost regional gallery (Letters, 29 January). The gallery would be delighted to receive the unparalleled local government support provided to its counterpart in Bendigo. However, with a much leaner budget allocation afforded by the City of Greater Geelong, the gallery provides excellent annual programming within means. Albeit previously announced, Geelong Gallery has secured the Archibald Prize exhibition for 2017 and 2018, which it looks forward to presenting to the people of Geelong and further afield. Geoffrey Edwards Geelong Gallery director
It’ll be a regional retrograde state of affairs if Avalon Airport remains a subsidised tin cloche operation following the likely September federal poll. And yet should G21 seek to bring 17 priority projects as a package to the PR election table, the chook that can deliver ongoing regional golden eggs will be screened and stymied per medium of a lack of governance acumen. While Premier Daniel Andrews, to his credit, acknowledged Avalon’s infancy (Geelong Indy Visions 2016, 29 January), PM Malcolm Turnbull’s broad brush, feel-good summation didn’t mention Avalon, an oversight shared by his predecessor Tony Abbott in the 2015 feature. In a period of mining downturn induced belttightening, G21 needs to highlight to the major parties that a modest investment in speeding up Avalon’s international accreditation would be a foot up the backside of limp local international carrier endeavors and that putting in place pledges for the infrastructure would open up Asian tourism and fresh-food export hub operations. Such political will and associated investments would provide the catalyst for unquantifiable regional upsides and related employment growth. Richard Worland Manifold Heights
Rail commuters worn down Public transport users face daily confusion and ongoing problems with bus and train services, yet the Andrews Labor Government remains in denial about the impact and the loss of public confidence in the system. The users cannot rely on a fast and efficient service to get them where they need to be on time. The public’s hope of an efficient, timely, safe and punctual system has all but evaporated, proving a major headache and causing severe damage to the Andrews Government. Alarm bells were ringing at regional network development planning forums, at which commuters clearly voiced their displeasure with timetables but their concerns fell on deaf ears. A shortage of rolling stock, a lack of additional train services in southwest Victoria, cancellations, continual breakdowns, delays, and overcrowded carriages and replacement coaches have left the public fed up and angry. Now we have wheel wear on VLocity trains that has shut down parts of the network and is likely to disrupt services for months. Not just the wheels are worn, so is the public’s patience and confidence in this Government. Simon Ramsay Member for Western Victoria Region
Aussies bashed, report slammed A Geelong newspaper contributor was recently worried about how journalists reported a brawl on a Torquay beach. He didn’t seem concerned about illegal fishing, a woman being attacked or eight others assisting the man who attacked the woman. He was concerned about the ex-ADF member, trained in self-defence, who defended his wife! His concern seemed entirely directed at the reporting of the incident, which described the victims as they were: Aussies at a beach, minding their own business, and the husband defending his wife when she was assaulted. His letter appeared as an attack on journalists reporting openly and freely in a democracy. He was more concerned about the report than the unprovoked violence, illegal fishing and gangbashing of an ex-ADF member, allegedly by nine members of a fishing group. 1984’s Ministry of Truth wouldn’t have to look far if it needed a new drone to preach Big Brother’s doctrine of ‘newspeak’ and ‘media-cleanse’. I wonder how many other consumers on fixed incomes are treated similarly. Is there a privacy issue here, with a third party given access to my personal information? KW Oakley Belmont

Deniers break the CO2 law Michael Spencer and Tim Saclier (Letters, 29 January) used the term “logarithmic“ in unsubstantiated ways to claim that “any extra greenhouse effect from additional CO2 is indeed trivial” and that alarmists never mention the heating effect of CO2 is “logarithmic, not exponential”. Arrhenius’s greenhouse law is a logarithmic mathematical expression that 120 years ago could predict the temperatures we now see at current CO2 levels. Today it predicts the scenarios that climate scientists are warning about. Given the serious consequences of global warming, a responsible person should be able to put their finger on exactly why the greenhouse gas equation is wrong before calling for no action to be taken. They could measure the infrared absorption properties of CO2, just like Arrhenius was able to do 120 years ago, or they could look at the quantum mechanical theory of a CO2 molecule and say, ‘Here it is, here’s why the greenhouse equation is wrong’. It would be game over for global warming. No argument. But they don’t because they can’t. Jukka Tuisku Barwon Heads

FINALLY FRIDAY
Amped up and so Divinyl-y inspired By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN TO ERR is human, to forgive is divine – so the saying goes. But for Drucindy Chin-Quan, to rock is Divinyl, and that’s just what her Chrissy Amplett tribute band Temperamental aims to do at next month’s Motor City Music festival. Chin-Quan uses Amphlett’s divine inspiration to carry on the tradition of the pioneering rock chick in a male-oriented industry. Taking the band name from the Divinyl’s second album, Chin Quan says she can relate to Amphlett’s struggles off-stage as well. “I often feel the frustration she must have felt being a female in a male-dominated rock industry,” Chin-Quan agreed. “Females can be shown a lot of disrespect, in practical ways in regard to bookings, dressing rooms and just in people’s attitude. “I have a Masters and I’m still not getting a job. Plus I’m part Chinese and there are no real Asians in the industry, so it’s a double whammy for me. “That’s where a lot of Chrissy’s attitude came from and that character plays out on stage.” Chin-Quan approaches her portrayal of Amphlett from the position of being a fan first. “She can be a hard character to get right. I still study her. I am always looking at video clips, before every stage show, to refresh myself. “That way I know I won’t get too comfortable. There’s always something new to pick up that I can incorporate into the show.” Chin-Quan’s rock and roll attitude is fuelled by being the youngest in a family of nine, ironically with several older brothers also in the music industry. It was one of her brothers, performing in an Angels tribute band, who first mentioned to Chin-Quan the resemblance to Amphlett.
DIVINE: Audiences find Drucindy Chin-Quan’s portrayal of Chrissy Amphlett is uncanny. The classically trained dancer and qualified high school music teacher included an Amphlett portrayal in her studies, where a teacher suggested forming her own tribute band. Chin-Quan
says she is eager to present Amphlett in the diva’s hometown, following her first gig locally last year. “A couple of Chrissy’s high school friends came and talked with me after the show and were compli-
mentary, so that was a relief,” Chin-Quan admitted. “It was a bit nerve-wracking bringing Chrissy to Geelong, but I’m looking forward to being part of the festival atmosphere at Motor City.”

COME INSIDE: Play School’s stars and favourite characters are on the way to Geelong with a new stage show.

Widely adored children’s television program Play School is on its way to Geelong with special national concert Humpty’s Showtime as part of the show’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The second longest-running children’s TV show in the English-speaking world, Play School entertains more than 100,000 Australian kids every year with its national concert tour. Presenter Alex Papps, who has starred on the show for just over 10 years, puts Play School’s success down to its “simplicity”. “It encourages kids to use their imagination, make their own fun and that it’s possible to do that within their own home,” Papps said. He described the 40-minute performance as a “very faithful representation of what they’ve come to love on TV”. “There are lots of opportunities for audience
participation and space to dance around to the songs. “I find so much joy in seeing how excited the kids get when they see their favourite Play School toys on stage. And the parents have a great time too. “I think Play School shows are a great way to introduce your kids to live performance.” The stage show features all the program’s favourite characters, including Humpty, Jemima, Big Ted and Little Ted. Two of the on-screen presenters attend to narrate each performance. As with the television program, the audience enjoys dancing along to songs, as well as quiet times to watch and listen. Play School fans will know familiar songs such as I’m a Little Teapot and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Humpty’s Showtime Geelong will be at South Barwon Civic Centre on 16 February.

“I don’t want to give too much away but they’ll be live projections on the walls and I’ve been working with some other artists on these tracks.” Schmarsel reflected on her experiences while touring Germany and England last year under her Alice Ivy label. “It gave me the opportunity to understand what it’s like to tour as a solo musician. It’s pushed me to the limits. Touring is not all glamorous, it’s such hard work. “One of my favourite experiences was playing at Loophole Artspace in Berlin. We arrived at the venue and there was smashed glass all over the floor from the party the night before and the bandroom looked like a dungeon with scratches on the walls.
“It was the true, grungy Berlin experience and it was just the best night.” Schmarsel grew up in a vibrant, multicultural household in Geelong as the daughter of German migrants. “The Geelong community has helped me so much, so I want to make an effort to play sets back in my hometown,” she said. “Because I’m always working so hard at what I do, I kind of forget to look back and appreciate what I’ve already achieved. “I’m pretty stoked about everything and I’m inspired to keep taking this further.” Alice Ivy performs at Kubo Studios, Geelong, on 13 February.

An up-and-coming local electronic music producer will bring her dreamy beats to Geelong next weekend. Under the name Alice Ivy, 22-year-old Annika Schmarsel has already toured England and Germany, only a year on from launching her label and having just graduated with a music production degree in November. But Schmarsel is no stranger to live shows. She once performed with the all-girl group the Sweethearts, a music program based at Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College, and toured Europe at age 16. The group played at Poretta Soul Festival in Italy and at Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival alongside some of the best artists the genre has to offer, including Al Green and Mark Ronson. Schmarsel is also heavily involved in industry events such as music festivals and interns at artist management companies. Alice Ivy’s sets have featured at both Face The Music and Melbourne Music Week. Her talent has also earned her support slots for Banoffee and rapper Remi. Alice Ivy has released three singles, her latest track Touch featuring London-based blues singer Georgia Van Etten. “I’m really inspired by Australian electronic music groups like The Avalanches. I like using film recordings and atmospheric sounds. I layered in original field recordings that I took from the streets of Melbourne with warm guitar lines,” Schmarsel said. “For my new single, I wanted to create a dreamscape theme, which is why I decided to use film recordings from Alice in Wonderland. “I’m busy with rehearsals at the moment. I’m always trying to think of creative ways to make a set more interesting and exciting for a live audience.

FINALLY FRIDAY AFFIRMING: Jonny Donahue in Every Brilliant Thing opens the GPAC 2016 season.
Playful brilliance It may be about depression, but it’s not depressing. The opening play of GPAC’s 2016 Deakin University Theatre Season is a warmly humorous look at a phenomenon becoming more prevalent in society. Every Brilliant Thing is a funny new play about depression and the lengths we will go to for those we love. Taking a different approach to a subject normally avoided, Every Brilliant Thing features British stand-up comedian Jonny Donahue in a one-man show – but with lots of audience participation. The unlikely combination has become an international hit, described as uplifting, joyful, lifeaffirming and one of the funniest plays ever. Donahoe plays a young boy who comes up with a long list of reasons why his suicidal mother should continue living: 1. Ice Cream; 2. Waterfights; 3. Staying up past bedtime and being allowed to watch TV; 4. The colour yellow; 5. Things with stripes; 6. People falling over. As the boy grows, so does the list, and what began as a simple way of dealing with tragedy becomes a life-long reminder that joy can be found in the seemingly insignificant. “The only way to really talk about depression is to do it while smiling,” Donahoe says.

“And the only way to deal with it is to talk to people and to share it and to realise how common it is and how normal it is, takes out some of the stigma.” Presenting the play in the round is the key, Donahoe says. “You can see everyone around you, so we create a sense of community. “There are lots of ways of helping depression treatments, medicines, all sorts of things - but the one thing you can do as a non-professional is to encourage communication, sharing, and talking.” Written by award winning playwright Duncan Macmillan in collaboration with Donahoe, Every Brilliant Thing comes to Geelong from critically acclaimed seasons in Edinburgh and New York. The play began life as a short story written by Macmillian, evolved into an exhibition and a Facebook group gathering followers and contributions from around the world and finally, an international stage play. Geelong audiences will have their chance to add to the list of things worth living for when Every Brilliant Thing opens in the Drama Theatre for six performances from 23 to 27 February. Book at gpac.org.au or 5225 1200.

The competition received over 42,000 entries from 96 countries, “highlighting its enduring appeal as a showcase for the natural world’s most astonishing and challenging sights”, the wool museum said. “The 100 winning images in the exhibition were selected from 18 individual category winners, depicting nature at its finest, from displays of extraordinary animal behaviour to sublime landscapes. “The competition is judged by an international panel of industry-recognised professionals. Images, submitted by both professional and amateur photographers, are selected for their creativity, artistry and technical complexity.” The exhibition would run alongside a display of local images submitted to a Geelong by Nature Photography Competition, the museum said. All the entries would be on display in the museum’s “Cabinet of Curiosities Lounge”.

An exhibition of the world’s best wildlife photography has opened in Geelong. The images in Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015 would be on display in Geelong and nowhere else in Victoria, said Mayor Darryn Lyons. With a photography background, Cr Lyons was “thrilled” Geelong had secured the exhibition for a second year in a row. Geelong was also the launch site of its national tour last Friday night, he said. Moorabool Street’s National Wool Museum will host the exhibition until 15 May. Patrons could inspect “100 awe-inspiring images from the world’s most prestigious photography event of its kind,” the museum said. “Wrestling komodo dragons, ethereal egrets and thirsty squirrels are among the creatures captured on camera for Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015.”

But the Ponds’ friendly, relaxed atmosphere, quality meals and service along with excellent value remain hallmark. The fantastic all-day menu with tummy-filling goodies starts at just $14, while the bistro is a great spot for a quick and hearty lunch. The right time to give back Karingal DoCare knows that a small commitment from a volunteer can make a huge difference. Six months after the amalgamation of community services organisations Karingal and DoCare Geelong, Karingal DoCare is seeking volunteers to assist older people across the Geelong region. According to Karingal DoCare social support manager Siarhra Atkins, the benefits of volunteering are invaluable. “You choose how much time you are willing to volunteer and we’ve found that just a few hours a week can make a difference,” she said. “If you’re interested in becoming a volunteer who provides social support and friendship to an older person, we can find a role for you.”
Helping out for just a few hours can make a great difference.
Karingal DoCare provides proactive social support for older people including home visiting, home library, client and carer groups, activity groups and social outings. Volunteers assist with these services and help to prevent social isolation. Prospective volunteers should contact Karingal DoCare on 5298 1053, or visit www.karingal. org.au/volunteer/karingal-docare. The service - for people aged over 65 - is supported by financial assistance from the Commonwealth and Victorian governments through the HACC (Home And Community Care) program. Karingal also has volunteers who support people with a disability to be more actively involved in community life.
Join our volunteer community today At Karingal we promote a fully inclusive community. You can help us achieve this.
We welcome new and existing patients to call Belmont Denture Clinic - 5241 6300 - and make an appointment with Ian for all your denture and mouthguard requirements.
Karingal DoCare – formerly DoCare Geelong – matches and co-ordinates volunteers who provide social support, regular contact and companionship to older people living in the community. Services include: • Home visiting • Home library
Ian M Flintoff

Pakington Street, Geelong, welcomes Mardi, a registered nurse specialising in micro-suction ear cleaning. This is a professional, water free and gentle method of cleaning ears which is also used by ear specialist doctors. Mardi said: “So many people come to us saying they have trouble with their ears and they don’t like the water syringing method. “They may have been to see a specialist ear doctor in the past but it is not easy to get an appointment. “They are really happy to find a place with a short waiting time and with gentle nurses who get the job done without using water.” Mardi sees many people referred by their doctor or audiologist as well as those who find her

Scooters Australia in Charles St, Newcomb, is where old-fashioned service is standard for all customers. Licensed dealers Mark and Susan Dillon train their local team with the motto: “It’s not about providing the best scooter to the customer, it’s about providing the scooter that meets the customer’s needs the best. The trained staff takes the time to listen to the customer’s requests, evaluate the best solutions and provide a range of options that best suit the requirements of the end user - all done with a smile and a distinct lack of “sales pressure. “We stock Geelong’s largest range of scooters, to provide products to meet everyone’s needs, and budget, High-tech war on skin disease Acne (Acne vulgaris) is the most common skin disease affecting, to at least some degree, approximately 85 per cent of Australians aged 14-24. However, adults of all ages can experience various forms of acne. Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. Acne is characterised by areas of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and greasy skin and may result in scarring. Having acne can cause embarrassment, anxiety, reduced self-esteem and sometimes even depression. Colleen Anderson, professionally trained skin clinician, laser safety officer and Bowen therapist at Belmont Skin Clinic, is very excited about the wonderful results being achieved for the control of acne using the Ultralux V4 IPL machine, which is the most advanced in intelligent IPL technology. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) based acne treatments destroy the acid bacillus bacteria and slow the overall production of oil that leads to acne, thus dramatically reducing the chance of spots and minimising the appearance of pores in general. Results will vary however most people will see a significant improvement in their skin condition after only a few treatments. Without drugs. Without downtime. The pulses of light produced
by the Ultralux V4 are very short in duration, resulting in minimal discomfort and fast recovery. By combining IPL treatments and LED treatments, results are even quicker and more effective. The clinic’s state of the art bi-accent LED is a light-emitting diode device that uses low levels of light to assist tissue healing, reduce inflammation, aid skin rejuvenation and control bacteria when treating adult and teenage acne. Belmont Skin Clinic which treats a wide variety of skin complaints, has some special offers for February and March, for the control of acne and also for IPL permanent hair reduction. Dental implants are an effective way to replace missing teeth. When teeth are lost because of disease or an accident, dental implants may be a good option. You may want to choose dental implants if you: · Hide your smile because you have missing teeth, · Wear dentures that are uncomfortable, · Are dissatisfied with your removable partial dentures, and · Want to keep your other teeth intact. Many people choose implants to replace a single tooth or several teeth, or to support a full set of dentures. Implants are posts surgically placed into the upper or lower jawbone. They replace the root of one or more missing teeth. Benefits of dental implants: · Implants offer firm support to man-made teeth. Dentures, bridges or single teeth attached to the implants won’t slip or shift in your mouth – a very important benefit when eating and speaking. · This secure fit also helps man-made teeth feel more natural than typical bridges or dentures. · Some people may find implant–supported dentures more comfortable than dentures that do

It’s a topic not often discussed, however it’s a problem that affects most women at some stage during their lifetime – vaginal atrophy. Now there’s a breakthrough non-surgical, nonhormonal treatment for vaginal itching and burning, painful intercourse and vaginal laxity. Dr Fariba Willison, an endo–gynaecologist interested in pelvic floor medicine and reconstructive surgery, pioneered the use of MonaLisa Touch in Australia. She has treated moe than 3000 patients with the laser and has conducted multiple research projects in this area. Many women can benefit from this treatment – it is particularly well suited to pre and post – menopausal women. However, younger women can also experience some or all of the symptoms of vaginal atrophy due to prolonged used of the pill, breast cancer, chemotherapy, breast-feeding or scarring resulting from childbirth requiring perineal repair. The MonaLisa Touch laser works by stimulating the body’s own regenerative processes to create more hydrated and healthy cells. Australian Skin Face Body, Geelong is hosting another information session on Women’s Intimate Health with Dr Willison in February 2016. To register your interest or to find out more about the MonaLisa Touch, please email info@asfb.com. au You will need a referral from your GP to see Dr Willison at FBW Gynaecology Plus Geelong; the Women’s Intimate Health Service now available at Australian Skin Face Body. Dr Fariba Willison and Mr Ian Holten are hosting “Wellness, Health and Anti-Aging Seminar”. The information session including breakfast is on Friday, 19 February 7.15am – 8.45am at the Novotel, 10-14 Eastern Beach, Geelong.

About Us
The team at Wayne’s Wheel Alignment and Service Centre are experts in suspension and wheel alignments. Wayne’s Wheel Alignment (WWA) offers general servicing and repairs on cars as well as dirt and road motorbikes, and suspension repairs. They also offer set-ups for race cars. Owner Rob White grew up around trucks, cars and motorbikes, and has always had an interest in classic cars. “We often have people coming in just to admire some of the old classics that our team work on,“ he said. “We’ve had Mustangs, early Holdens and Fords, Dodge Phoenixes and early Chevrolets. We’ve even had a 1937 Packard, to name a few. “The time and effort people put into restoring some of these old cars is phenomenal. It’s great to see these cars still on the road.“ Mr White said they had many loyal customers who had been coming in for the 30 odd years WWA had been in operation since ’91. “We now even have our older clients’ children and grandchildren coming in,“ he said. “We always have one-on-one time with our customers and have a bit of a friendly joke around together. “We take enormous pride in our work. We provide tips to customers so they can learn how to do things like checking their oil and tyre pressures. “We recommend drivers to get their cars serviced every six months or after each 10,000 kilometres.“ WWA is offering a free rotation and wheel balancing with every service until the end of February if you mention reading about the deal in the Geelong Indy. Wayne’s Wheel Alignment is at 25 Crows Road, Belmont. For more information, phone 5244 3742 or visit facebook.com/wayneswheelalign.

Easy, efficient and expert at parts, repairs for all vehicles Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including offroad and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.

AUTOMATIC TRANS / DUAL ZONE CLIMATE CONTROL / ABS BRAKES CRUISE / ALLOY WHEELS / EXCELLENT SERVICE HISTORY / LOW KMS / WMP 032 Smart Code WMP 032 TRIAL: Metro Dzwonczyk tests the SMS technology at Mike Hanneysee Car Sales.
High-tech check By ALANA MITCHELSON A Geelong car dealer is trialling new technology to help prospective buyers check out the details of vehicles at the click of a mobile phone button. Mike Hanneysee Car Dealers has introduced the system to the dealership’s advert in today’s Indy. Readers can text codes appearing with advertised cars to receive back more information almost immediately. Principal dealer Justin Hanneysee said the technology helped reach buyers in the moment. “It’s immediate, so I’m able to contact interested buyers immediately while they’re in the buying frame of mind. I think it’ll give me a better indication of how many people are engaging with my ads rather than just giving it a general glance. “I’m not sure what the benefits will be at this stage but hopefully people will respond well to the codes once they understand how the system works.” A Geelong-based developer created the technology with the aim of assisting car dealers and real estate agents. Peter Cran and business partner
Phillip Warhurst spent 18 months developing the product. “We create a code which is displayed beside each item in a newspaper advertisement. For example, a dealer may have six cars in an ad so we create six different codes,” Mr Warhurst said. “When a potential buyer is interested in one of the sale items, they can text the code to a supplied mobile number. They’ll then immediately be presented with all the key details about the product. “For example, texting the code associated to a property will send the potential buyer a link to a video, text, photos or other multimedia. During this process, the system captures the mobile details of the interested buyer.” The one-step SMS system would provide convenience for customers and businesses alike, Mr Warhurst said. “When agents or dealers advertise in a newspaper, space and the associated expense limits smaller businesses who don’t have the marketing power that bigger brands have. It provides interactive, connectivity to the ad. “We wanted to create something to help bring back some of the power to smaller businesses so they can build databases and client loyalties.”
Suzuki’s Swift in demand By ALISTAIR KENNEDY Ten years without any significant change to exterior design is almost unheard of in the car industry but that’s the situation with the Suzuki Swift which continues to defy conventional wisdom by selling in consistently high numbers year-in and year-out. Indeed, the popular little Suzuki finished the 2015 sales race in third place in the 30-model Light Car category, beaten only by heavyweights Mazda2 and Toyota Yaris. The current second generation Swift has been on sale since 2011 with the next generation expected in 2017. Much of the success of Swift has been its widespread appeal, traversing both age and gender boundaries. With its tall, neat and angular design, it’s not only a great looking car, it’s also very practical. For a 3.85-metre car there’s a surprising amount of interior space with plenty of headroom at both front and rear, although the sloping roof does make entry into the rear seats a bit awkward for taller passengers. The front seats have a good spread of fore and aft adjustment and the driver’s seat can be raised and lowered. The only other negative is the car’s very small (210-litre) boot meaning that the 60/40 split rear seat back is likely to get plenty of use. There are four Swift variants: GL, GL Navigator, GLX and Sport. Two engines are offered, both fourcylinder petrol units. The Swift GL, GL Navigator and GLX get a 1.4-litre that generates 70 kW of power and 130 Nm

of torque at 4000 rpm. Fuel consumption is listed at 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions at 132 grams per km. We averaged 6.3 litres per 100km during our week-long test. Unlike many so-called ‘sports’ models, the Swift Sport has added engine and dynamic performance. It has a larger engine, at 1.6 litres with 100 kW and 160 Nm, to back up its firmer suspension, sporty body kit and enhanced interior. Transmission options are five-speed manual and four-speed automatic in the GL and four-speed auto only in the GLX. Swift Sport has a six-speed manual or CVT with seven ‘manual’ settings. Standard safety equipment in all models is fairly basic but does include seven airbags (including a driver’s knee ‘bag) as well as ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist and electronic stability control.

Print does the job on employment Newspapers remain a popular medium for job hunters searching for their next role despite the wide choice of domestic and international alternatives online. Emma data shows 1.4 million job seekers use print newspapers each month. Job seekers from certain industries are more likely to use print newspapers for job hunting. Those looking for work in public administration are 46 percent more likely to use print newspaper’s employment sections with similar results for mining (44 percent), and teachers and lecturers (27 percent) more likely to use print. Businesses looking to find the right candidate should employ print newspapers as part of their search, or risk missing out on a large pool of potential candidates.

SPORT Tough day’s play for Cats LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club’s match against Fitzroy Doncaster is evenly poised after a tight first day’s play last Saturday. Winning the toss and asking their hosts to bat first at Schramm Reserve, the Cats took a little longer than they would have liked to break through, Fitzroy Doncaster putting on 56 for the first wicket before Joel Davies (2/16) effected a double breakthrough. From there, the game ebbed and flowed, with the home side eventually being dismissed for just 213, Liam Buchanan (2/12) and Tom Smith (2/26) both picking up a brace of wickets. Geelong had to face seven overs to complete the day’s play and while it managed to wipe 32 runs off the deficit, it came at the expense of two wickets. Hayden Butterworth remains not out, and will be the key if Geelong wants to continue its recent winning streak. In the Geelong Cricket Association, two rounds of two day games remain, and in division one, the race for the finals is still wide open. Reigning premier St Josephs were gone for all money before Christmas but three wins on the trot since the break has a few teams nervously
looking over their shoulders. It sits in ninth place just three points outside the top six, although there is a number of teams in between with at least a say in their own destiny. The Joeys host seventh placed Murgheboluc this round in what is virtually an elimination final, as the loser will struggle to make it. With stars of the likes of Glen Talarico and Leigh Kentish going head-to-head, this will be a cracker, but if Trent Walerys brings his A game and decides to shave the nickname ‘Ice’ into the back of his head like he once did in the Under 15 football grand final, then the Frogs better watch out! SOUTH BARWON v Geelong City, LEOPOLD v Geelong West, Newtown and Chilwell v LARA, EAST BELMONT v Bell Post Hill, Grovedale v NORTH GEELONG, ST JOSEPHS v Murgheboluc. In division two, after a tight season, the top six has finally started to break away after Modewarre defeated Bell Park last week to open up a nine point gap over seventh placed Newcomb and District. That means attention can now turn to the top of the table and this week it’s first placed Marshall taking on third placed St Peters. The Bears missed a golden opportunity last round to establish a clear break on top when they were backdoor outrighted by Thomson.
In an incredible game, Thomson fought back from a narrow first innings loss to storm right back into premiership contention with a gutsy second innings win. St Peters, on the other hand, has won all three of its post-Christmas games and has a great opportunity to show it is peaking at just the right time. MODEWARRE v Alexander Thomson, HIGHTON v Newcomb and District, Manifold Heights v BELL PARK, Marshall v ST PETERS, Torquay v THOMSON, ST ALBANS BREAKWATER v Waurn Ponds. And in division three, Inverleigh has slipped to seventh spot on the ladder after going down to Teesdale last week, star batsman Shaun Campbell the star for Teesdale with a double century just when his team needed it most. Inverleigh’s task to stay in the hunt doesn’t get any easier as it takes on Shelford at home tomorrow. While Shelford has plenty of stars in the team, perhaps the challenge of taking them down may be just what Inverleigh needs to kick its premiership campaign back into gear. Winchelsea v BANNOCKBURN, Corio v LETHBRIDGE, Corio Bay v LITTLE RIVER, INVERLIGH v Shelford, Guild St Marys v TEESDALE, Meredith bye.
Upwardly mobile Rhys pins his hopes on the future By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong’s band of flexible, athletic ruckmen is looking good, with last season’s surprise packet Rhys Stanley back in full training. Injuries restricted the rucking output for the Cats last season, especially after Stanley went down with a foot injury during a breakout game against Port Adelaide. He had four pins inserted in his right foot and began the long rehabilitation process. “It’s going really well, I’ve been able to string some sessions together, which has been really good,” Stanley said after training at the Geelong Baseball Centre this week. “The surgeon is happy, the physio is happy, the docs are happy so I’m happy.” Stanley said he expected to continue doing full training with the main group, with “some top up running on the side just to get that fitness level back up to where the boys are at”. Stanley said he was aiming for a comeback in the NAB Cup. “I feel that if I can fully train and tick that off there’s no reason why I couldn’t play some NAB Cup.” Stanley said he had been frustrated by his injury but seeing “blokes like Daniel Menzel and there’s a few at this footy club that have been through a bit and that puts everything into perspective. “There are guys that have only been able to string one or two games together in four years. “It’s just another challenge. It’s part of the game, every footballer has them and it just how you come out the other end.” Stanley said the playing group was excited about the prospect for the season ahead. “It’s pretty exciting. Internally (we are) doing the week to week thing, externally there’s a bit of excitement. “We’re enjoying it, we’ve just got to live up to it and do the little things well. “It’s definitely an exciting time for the club and the list we’ve got together is pretty talented. “Competition for spots is healthy, all the big guys are really healthy this year, everyone’s training really well, so it’s fantastic for the group. “You come off the track and look at each other and think you had a good session and gave each other a bit and you think you got something out of it. “That’s the competition that’s healthy. There’s a real competiveness in the drills we are doing because it’s only going to make us better. “There’s some big ruckmen in the league and we probably don’t have the biggest bodied guys and I think that really competitive stuff we are
Mixed catches spoil anglers ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers encountered everything from snapper to pike on Corio Bay over the past week. Drifting over the spoil grounds while casting soft plastics caught the best mixed bags, including flathead to 50cm and snapper of almost 3kg. North Shore’s rocks fished well for pike while trolling past or casting hard-body lures, while land-based anglers caught pinkie snapper to 45cm on bluebait at St Helens. Clifton Springs hosted respectable whiting action, with the area straight out from the Dell in six to eight metres producing fish to 35cm. Squid remained an option in close on the grass beds when the water clarity was good. Snapper angling improved at St Leonards, with water around 20m yielding fish to 5kg and the odd gummy shark as a welcome by catch. Fresh squid baits were key with a steady supply available in close around the mouth of Swan Bay. Garfish also held in better numbers over the larger grass beds where a strong berley trail helped take numbers of fish. The kingfish were a little slower off Queenscliff but large schools of salmon were still regularly breaking the surface in feeding frenzies and devouring any soft plastic or small metal lure cast into the commotion. Offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, smaller kingfish to 65cm were boated while jigging or trolling occie skirts baited with squid strips. Anglers who were keen on drifting baits across the bottom had little trouble finding tiger flathead in 40m. Casting lures from the rock platforms either side of Lorne produced salmon of 2kg along with the odd kingfish. Long casts were often unnecessary, with the salmon holding in tight to the rocks. The best action was still down Victoria’s western district where Portland produce fantastic results. Kingfish continued patrolling the harbour with live squid catching fish to 10kg. Trolling small skirted lures has caught kingfish and bluefin tuna to 15kg. Stan Daglas boated a kingfish of 8.85kg from Portland’s North Shore. Anglers fishing the front of the Fitzroy River caught better numbers of both species, while Dave Russell also boated an impressive blue shark of 40kg on 6kg line. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir typically demanded the hard yards of Justin Rayner who landed a well-conditioned brown trout of 3.4kg on fly.
BIG CAT: Rhys Stanley at training this week. Picture: LINDSAY KELLEY doing will hold us in good stead.” Stanley was impressed with the training form of Gold Coast acquisition Zac Smith. “He’s a good ruckman, he’s a big boy, very tall,
and his reach is frustrating at times. “You think you’ve got him pinned down and he just reaches over the top of you. He’s running really well.”
