SHISHA cafe owners are in a fight with Greater Dandenong Council to keep their businesses open. Ali Adam, who has run the popular Cafe Asmara in Springvale Road for the past 10 years, said he is battling a “shisha phobia” as he negotiates with the council to keep his venue’s couches, large TVs and entertainment stage. He said council officers claimed his alcohol-free venue, which serves coffee, live music and stand-up comedy, was more of a place of assembly than a cafe. As part of the ultimatum, the council required him to reduce the venue’s seating from 48 to 40, Mr Adam said. “The council says it’s more of a place of assembly because people stay there longer. “They’re not just drinking a coffee and leaving.” Mr Adam is applying for a new permit but said the council’s stance “potentially shuts down all shisha places”. “They are trying to stop me operating. Every owner is fighting the closure of shisha.” Maruf Ahmed has spent $60,000 to overturn Greater Dandenong’s rejection of his proposed 50-patron shisha lounge in Buckley Street, Noble Park. At a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing in December, the council argued against the proposal on parking grounds. It was unacceptable to open the venue with no onsite-parking or elsewhere in the crowded commercial district, the council argued. VCAT member Michael Nelthorpe said Mr Ahmed should expect council

support for more businesses in the area to match the planned rise of multi-storey apartments in the activity centre. He said the peak demand of 15 car spaces could be “readily accommodated” in the evenings. “I find the lack of parking on this site will have an indiscernible impact on local amenity.” The council won’t comment on Mr Adam’s case but insists it’s dealing with “each matter on its merits”. “Council’s approach in each case is dependent upon the specific circumstances,” city planning director Jody Bosman said. “In some cases it may be driven by community complaints, in others it may relate to compliance with specific legislation. “Often it is about council taking a proactive approach to ensure community amenity is preserved.” The council has a stated opposition on public health grounds to the exemption of shisha smoking under the Tobacco Act. Unlike cigars and cigarettes, shisha can be smoked without age restriction inside public venues. As part of a state review of the Tobacco Act, the council is seeking support from other councils and public health bodies to lobby the State Government to treat shisha smoking with other tobacco products. Mr Adam argues his fruit-flavoured shisha has minimal tobacco content, estimated at less than 0.1 per cent, and causes fewer problems than alcohol. “This shisha phobia is wrong. Most of Hollywood’s stars go to shisha places – it’s more sociable.”

Police sweep streets in hoon car clean up By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS POLICE have put the brakes on people involved in illegal hoon meets after three days of raids in Melbourne’s south-east and north on 3, 4 and 5 February. A total of 26 people were arrested and 17 cars seized during the raids, including in Dandenong, Cranbourne and Narre Warren. Among those charged were a 20-year-old Dandenong man, a 23-year-old Noble Park man, an 18-year-old Cranbourne man, and 18-year-old Cranbourne East man, a 23-year-old Clyde North man, a 22-year-old Hampton Park man, a 20-year-old Narre Warren man, a 24-year-old Narre Warren South man and a 39-year-old Narre Warren man. Eighteen cars were also seized. Inspector Brian Sharp, who headed Greater Dandenong police’s involvement in the raids, said investigations were still ongoing into the so-called South East Skids meets. “We’re not finished yet,” he said - with the investigation to include organisers and spectators. Inspector Bruce Kitchen of Greater Dandenong police said the

Melbourne South East Skids YouTube video still, December 2013 arrests should have a “dramatic effect” on the rising number of hoon meets. “Hopefully other potential hoons will take heed of the message.” Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said most of those arrested were aged between 18 and 25 and did not have a criminal history. Others were involved in Northern Skids meets in Melbourne’s north. Mr Hill said the two groups would hold joint meetings, lining up like a drag meeting and performing burnouts in front of hundreds of

spectators in industrial estates. The cars would then leave “in the same erratic way” he said. Mr Hill told of two police officers being “beset” by crowds at a recent meet of 200 cars and 500 people in Melbourne’s south. The crowds “en masse” and with “no regard for authority” threw rocks at police, he said. “Their attitude changed markedly since they were arrested today.” He said social media had been an “invaluable investigatory tool” for police who had been surveying the

hoons since Operation Regarder was set up in November. “They brag about their behaviour online and our message to them is we see you, we’ll find you, we’ll charge you and seize your car. “Their arrogance, their poor attitude, their lack of concern for themselves and others, their brazenness has brought themselves undone.” Those arrested face charges of conduct endangering life, conduct endangering serious injury, dangerous driving, careless driving, improper control of a vehicle and emitting excessive smoke and noise from a vehicle. They face potential jail terms of up to 10 years, loss of licence and having their vehicles crushed or sold off by the state. Many will be bailed, subject to a night curfew and banned from attending hoon meets. Mr Hill warned that more arrests could follow and that event organisers who did not drive at the meets were not immune from charges. “These irresponsible people, including the event organisers and drivers, place their lives and the lives of others at risk,” he said.

YASER Zomorodi’s fight for citizenship is far from over. Since the Journal featured the Dandenong kung fu wushu champion in June, little progress has been made on upgrading his restrictive bridging visa. But the fault doesn’t seem to lie with the Federal Government, but with the sporting organisation that would most benefit from his supreme skills. Bruce Corles, who coaches at Lifestyle Martial Arts club in Dandenong, said Mr Zomorodi had been waiting months for Kung Fu Wushu Australia to write a letter on behalf of his citizenship bid. He said Mr Zomorodi had provided everything the national association asked for, such as proof of his achievements, cross-checks with immigration authorities and a formal legal application. “They’ve been just sitting on their hands,” Mr Corles said. “They agreed to support Yaser. It’s just a matter of writing the letter.” While on a bridging visa, Mr

Zomorodi cannot return to Australia if he goes overseas. This rules him out of coaching or competing in upcoming World Games. Mr Zomorodi is providing expert coaching to the club’s 17-yearold Emily Blundell ahead of her representing Australia in Junior World Games in June. Mr Corles said sending Mr Zomorodi, a national champ in his Iranian homeland, to the Indonesia games could make a difference to Blundell’s medal aspirations. Mr Zomorodi was spending much of his time coaching and helping at the martial arts club, but struggling with the “limbo” of having no work rights, Mr Corles said. “It’s funny because the sport is so huge in Iran. “When Yaser came to Australia on the boat, he thought the (wushu) association would just grab on to him. “They just haven’t seemed to be interested.” Kung Fu Wushu Australia president Walt Missingham did not return the Journal’s calls.

History’s fiery lessons can’t be ignored IT’S now seven years since the tragic events of Black Saturday on 7 February 2009. I’m often asked questions: what did we learn from this experience? How have we improved? Could it happen again? As the most senior operational officer of the region on 7 February, I know all too well how we saved so much, but also know just how close we came to losing much more. As individuals we assess risk in our own way. What is a risk to one person differs to the next. Some in the community live with a degree of naivety of the risk and many others believe it won’t happen to them. Within a few years after Black Saturday, it was evident that apathy was starting to come back our community. This is a concerning trend that is somewhat linked to our human behaviour. Strangely enough it seems we often forget our history, which in many ways tells our future. We only have to remind ourselves of Victoria’s bushfire history to understand that it will happen again (Wye River 2015, Black Saturday 2009, Alpine National Park and Grampians 2006, North

So what’s different today and why are we at risk from fire more than ever before? Whether you believe in climate change or not doesn’t take away the fact that since the late ’90s we have been facing an ever-increasing grass and bushfire risk. I know from over 30 years of experience with CFA that our response to significant fires over the summer period has increased dramatically in the past 18 years. Combine this fact with an explosion in population in outer metropolitan Mel-

sponsibility to educate the community about the risk. We all have a responsibility to our families, friends and the wider community to listen and learn so that we are all prepared. As fire agencies, we can’t make people act with common sense. We can, however, continue to educate, inform and guide the community so we all make the best decisions when faced with the fire threat. With the increasing risk of hotter, dryer, longer summers, we need to be prepared. We are tackling the risk head-on with advancements in processes, systems and tools that we’ve never had before. We all need to listen, learn and, importantly, act when it comes to bushfire. Don’t think that it won’t or can’t happen to you because more than likely you will face a large fire in your lifetime and you will only get one chance to make the right decisions. Don’t be naïve enough to think it won’t happen again - prepare, act, survive. For more information on how to prepare check out www.cfa.vic.gov.au.

bourne and provincial cities across Victoria and the challenge in protecting our communities has never been so great. The interface areas (residential, commercial and industrial precincts adjacent to grass, scrub and bushland) present a real danger. Life risk exists beside nature’s beauty. Many within the community still believe that they’re not at risk because they live in a densely populated suburb. It’s not until you explain that the dry reserve next door, the grass on the nature strip and the overgrown shrubs in the neighbour’s yard all present a risk. Then bring to their attention that many of our fences are made of timber, and the garden contains mulch and small trees that are all ready to burn on a hot dry windy day. As firefighters we see the risk that many others don’t, but it’s not until you really point things out that people then begin to realise. As the saying goes, “We can’t see the forest for trees!” The same principle applies if you can’t see what you should be looking for - bushfire risk. Fire agencies (CFA, DELWP, MFB) have a re-

LOOKING BACK Looking Back 100 years ago 10 February 1916 Dandenong Recruits Dr Taylor and Recruiting Sergeant Pickett have been busy during the past week dealing with batches of recruits who have answered “yes” to the Government’s appeal. The first batch proceeded to the final depot last evening and the second batch will leave a fortnight later. Great credit is due to Mr J Hemmings for his splendid patriotic action in allowing the recruiting sergeant the free use of his motor car. Other offers of assistance have

been received from Major Wilson and Mr Rossiter, and it is hoped that all who can assist in their manner will do so. A recruiting meeting is to be held at the Dandenong Town Hall on Tuesday evening 15th at 8pm. 50 years ago 3 February 1966 Police check on area hotel, but no trouble Dandenong - Everything quiet, no disturbances, no arrests and not a drunk in sight. That was the story on Tuesday night in Dandenong, the night when 10 o’clock hotel closing returned af-

ter an absence of 50 years. Police kept a careful eye on the situation and checked every hotel in the district, but the story was the same from Hallam to Noble Park. They found bars no more crowded than a normal mid-week afternoon. Lounges were comfortably full with family groups having a night out to experience drinking legally in a hotel after 6pm. 20 years ago 12 February 1996 City on the Move A new Image unfurls Dandenong’s “drugs and dragsters” reputation will fade into the back-

ground when the city “goes on display” this Thursday. For the first time in history of local government, the City of Greater Dandenong will join 200 exhibitors from around the State and will flaunt itself at the “Victoria on Show” Expo, at the new $12.9 million Melbourne Exhibition Centre. Council’s involvement in the expo is just one step in a move to shed the city’s old struggle-town image. 5 years ago 7 February 2011 Good Heavens, it’s Hell Motorists in Greater Dandenong got the fright of their lives on Friday

night when a deluge hit the roads, forcing some to escape drowning in their cars. Three drivers were stranded under the Cheltenham Road rail bridge and were forced to climb out and watch in horror as the water submerged their cars. Residents and businesses were on high alert as the rain bucketed down late Friday afternoon. Springvale soaked up 100 millimetres in 24 hours. - Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

Declan O'Brien says Jesus would offer sanctuary to asylum seekers. 137150 Picture: GARY SISSONS

Beat the heat with these

Open doors TWO Dandenong priests have spoken in favour of helping asylum seekers in the face of the looming deportation of more than 260 asylum seekers including 37 babies - to Nauru. The Reverand Jeffrey Parker of St James’ Anglican Church said his parish was too small to give sanctuary for asylum seekers - as was offered by at least 10 churches nationwide. “In terms of people occupying the church, it would be problematic. In a cathedral there would be more room, more areas for people to reside.” The church still offered support to the disadvantaged such as a free meal on Mondays, he said. Rev Parker praised those who were prepared to test the “ancient principle of sanctuary” - as described by the Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce. “The news was pretty striking that these kids (in off-shore detention) are the most traumatised cases the experts have seen.

“We can’t in all conscience remove those people to Nauru.” He hoped Immigration and Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton would hold to his word not to send children back into harm’s way. “The lack of transparency is the worst aspect of the whole thing.” Rev Parker told of being left speechless when he met an Afghan new arrival at the church recently. The man had been in detention for two years since arriving by boat, his former house had been destroyed and he had little prospect of getting his family over here. “There’s a lot of talk about stopping drownings at sea which is a very important consideration. “But to stop them by extra cruelty is very problematic. “Surely there’s a better way.” Father Declan O’Brien of St Mary’s Catholic Church said he was inspired by Pope Francis’s declaration that “every convent and every parish house should

be open as a place of welcome” to asylum seekers. To him it’s about acting in a Christ-like fashion. “At the end of the day, you ask what would have Jesus done? He would offer sanctuary.” If asylum seekers asked for sanctuary from the Australian Border Force, Fr O’Brien said he’d hope to have the “courage of my convictions and do the same (as Jesus)”. One church in Melbourne - St John’s Uniting Church in Essendon - has pledged sanctuary as part of the Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce. “Where a state is causing grievous harm, churches can provide sanctuary and immunity from arrest by authorities,” said the taskforce’s chairman, the Very Reverend Dr Peter Catt. “The legality of sanctuary has never been tested under Australian law, nevertheless we are determined to apply its moral precepts and protect the most vulnerable from certain harm.”

AN ACCUSED family violence offender recently got some home truths from his cousin in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. The cousin was in the witness box, offering her home as the accused’s bail residence. In the middle of giving evidence, she turned toward the accused and told him: “I will take you and I will help you but you’re not to contact (the victim) anymore. “If you come with me, you have a curfew. There’s no alcohol or drugs. “You can come with me or go back to prison.” The judge, accustomed to doing the lecturing, sat back and beamed. “This is a family sort-out!” he said. SECURITY staff can get pretty thorough at Dandenong’s courthouse. Recently, a visitor was required to take off his belt, workboots and an item of clothing during the screening procedure at the entrance. The man then helpfully volunteered his handkerchief for an X-Ray examination. “No, you can take your hankie!” a guard told the man.

WHAT do one of Dandenong’s oldest residents Mary Colquhoun and Greater Dandenong councillor Angela Long have in com-

mon? A love of bingo. Angela attended Mary’s 100th birthday celebration at the Dandenong Club on 31 January (see page 18). The pair have known each other for 20 years. Mary’s son Bob said his mum, who turned 100, played bingo weekly for chocolate at her nursing home and for money at a competitive bingo competition each Friday. “She’s just disappointed that she only plays two books these days, while Angela plays six,” Bob said. SADLY police last week confirmed a 68-yearold Noble Park man was one of four victims on board the plane bound for Tasmania which tragically crashed into waters off Barwon Heads. A 55-year-old Mordialloc man, 63-year-old Black Rock woman and a 65-year-old Black Rock man were also on board the ill-fated plane which took off from Moorabbin Airport. The aircraft crashed about two kilometres off Collendina Beach between Barwon Heads and Point Lonsdale, and water police have been scouring the ocean floor since the crash. A fisherman who was out on the water at the time witnessed the accident and contacted police.

Budget woe By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong Council needs to find $3 million in savings in its June budget to comply with the State Government’s rate-capping policy. Councillors have agreed not to apply for a rate cap variation and so bound the council to a rates rise of no more than 2.5 per cent – equivalent to CPI. Mayor Heang Tak said the council faced a “big shortfall” in its financial plans. The council would not have details on budget cuts until it completes a review in May, he said. Australian Services Union state branch secretary Richard Duffy warned of the cumulative pain of rate capping. Over the next five years Greater Dandenong would suffer a $50.1 million projected funding cut and $219 million in the next decade, he said. “History has shown councils do not adopt a ‘business as usual’ approach when faced with financial challenges such as rate capping. “Inevitably, infrastructure is run down, capital works projects are deferred or abandoned, services are cut and ultimately jobs are lost.”

Councillor Matthew Kirwan said the council would try to absorb the revenue slump in 2016-17 “but I’m confident that that is not sustainable”. He said the council would be more dependent on state and federal grants for infrastructure if it didn’t seek a rates-cap variation in future years. Cr Tak noted that even under the rates cap, some ratepayers would face rises significantly more than 2.5 per cent due to a municipality-wide property re-evaluation. “All properties will be revalued this year, so if your property value has increased by more than the average in Greater Dandenong, you will pay a higher amount in rates. "But if your value has increased by less than the average, your rates will be lower.” Cr Tak said the council didn’t apply for a variation because there was not enough time to conduct the required “high level of community consultation” before the Essential Services Commission’s March deadline. He noted the State Government’s landfill and fire services levies - both collected on rates notices – were not subject to the rates cap.

Coke criminal is in the can

The alleged burglar.

A BURGLAR has been snapped on camera after stealing electronic goods and a can of Coke from a Dandenong North house at dawn on Tuesday, police say. The man had allegedly entered the Hughes Crescent home through an unlocked side door as the three occupants were sleeping about 6.15am on 1 February. During the aggravated burglary, the intruder took a smartphones, a smart-tablet and a camera from several rooms before taking a Coke from the kitchen fridge. An awoken 28-year-old occupant found the man drinking in the kitchen, followed him out the front

SHOP

door and took a photo of him in the front yard. A 22-year-old housemate awoke and drove after the man, who then jumped on the car’s bonnet and kicked the windscreen. The thief escaped on foot, running towards flats in Menzies Avenue. The burglar is described as Caucasian, aged in his mid to late 30s, about 185-190 centimetres tall with dark, short and messy hair, dark eyes and a cut on his forehead. During the intrusion he wore a Nike dark-blue zip-up hooded jacket, black sunglasses on his head and a silver ring on his right ring finger.

Green wedge set for u-turn By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong councillors are prepared to vote against their own endorsed Green Wedge Management Plan to pave the way for a proposed housing estate at Keysborough Golf Club, according to councillor Peter Brown. The council has advertised for a planning scheme amendment C143 to rezone the golf club’s land to Green Wedge A which contradicts the council’s recent support for the housing estate. The rezoning, in fact, entrenches the area’s rural character and retains massive subdivision minimum lots of four hectares. Defenders of the Green Wedge spokesman Barry Ross welcomed the council’s apparent change of direction.

“We are particularly pleased that the Keysborough Golf Course will receive stronger protection through the rezoning to Green Wedge A Zone and the change to the local planning policy,” Mr Ross said. “Hopefully, this will put an end to the moves to have the course taken out of the Green Wedge and carved up for housing” Mr Ross said it would be interesting to see how the State Government responds. Planning Minister Richard Wynne has the final say on the golf course land’s fate and Amendment C143. Last year he reiterated his opposition to excising the golf course from the green wedge. The amendment was proposed in the council’s 2014 Green Wedge Management Plan, and endorsed by a slim six to five majority by councillors.

Cr Brown said that councillors - including himself - were not aware of the “devil in the detail” at the time of voting for the GWMP. “I didn’t see inside the detail was a shiny pair of handcuffs,” he said. Since then, Cr Brown said a “substantial” majority of councillors backed a submission for the State Government to include the golf club in the urban growth boundary. That would pave the way for an Intrapac housing estate on the 76-hectare site, and the golf club gaining $40 million and a state-of-the-art home in Pillars Road, Keysborough. Cr Brown conceded that even if councillors altered lot sizes as part of Amendment C143, the final say rested with Mr Wynne.

Brutal tomahawk attack A MAN was hacked in the back with a tomahawk during an argument in front of his Dandenong house on Monday 1 February. About 8.10pm, the victim and his fiancee started bickering with another male known to them outside the Olive Street home. Soon afterwards, a third male arrived in a dark blue se-

dan, joined in the dispute and swung a tomahawk into the middle of the victim’s back. The man was taken to Dandenong Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. In a separate incident a man required plastic surgery after being stabbed several times outside his Dandenong unit. After exchanging a few text

messages with another man, the victim was lured outside his King Street unit during a call from a private number about 9.40pm on 1 February. As the victim walked down the steps, he was attacked by the man. During a scuffle, the victim received cuts to his forearm, and scratches to his forehead and chest.

‘Kangaroo’ trial By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS SOUTHERN Migrant and Refugee Centre’s new board is set to rub salt in the wounds of ousted “Australian professional” board members, accusing them of bringing the SMRC into disrepute. Nine former board members, including two lawyers, a senior public servant, a former TAFE chief executive and an aged care firm’s chief executive, were deposed by a Migrant Team ticket during a heated board spill in November. Several of them, including public servant Helen Cester, who have stayed on as members, will face a disciplinary hearing which could result in their suspension or expulsion. They stand accused by the new board, led by ongoing chairman Brian Oates, of distributing a pamphlet before the election that harmed the SMRC’s reputation. An angry Ms Cester likened the upcoming hearing to a “kangaroo court”. She said the pamphlet had

been used to dispute Mr Oates’s pre-election claims that the previous board intended to remove migrants from the board, have only “Australian professionals”, and to become corporatised without any members. “What we were trying to do was to defend ourselves against those allegations,” Ms Cester said. She said Mr Oates, a UK migrant, was making the allegations to gain control of the board. Some removed board members were “devastated” at how they were removed. “They’ve given hours and hours of time. It gets tainted with an unhappy brush.” Ms Cester said she was worried about the expertise removed from the board. “The organisation is answering to people on the board who don’t understand how and why you do things. “I doubt many people on the board have skills in strategic planning.” In response, Mr Oates said that “going to the press” would

only harm Ms Cester’s case at the disciplinary hearing. “(The pamphlet) said I refused to talk to them and didn’t provide evidence,” Mr Oates said. “Well, I didn’t provide evidence. There was a lot of talk about what they were doing so I didn’t bother to give them evidence, but I certainly met with them. “The fact that it was distributed far and wide didn’t do the reputation of the SMRC any good.” Mr Oates said the board, which includes migrants of Tamil, English, Albanian and Romanian backgrounds, would bring in an accountant and solicitor after “clearing the decks”. “A lot of those people thought just them and their friends were capable of running the board,” Mr Oates said this week. “It’s not hard for ordinary people to run a board. “Some of these people with diplomas couldn’t make a decision to save themselves.”

THE Alannah and Madeline Foundation and the Telstra Foundation have acknowledged Greater Dandenong Libraries as an eSmart Library Service. Greater Dandenong Mayor Heang Tak said eSmart Libraries was one of the most significant community cyber safety programs ever undertaken in Australia with more than one-

third of all libraries across the nation involved in the program. Cr Tak said the council was proud to be a part of the eSmart program. “Computers, technology and social media are such a large part of the everyday lives of so many residents in Greater Dandenong, I have no doubt the whole community will benefit

from this program,” Cr Tak said. “Achieving accreditation is the culmination of hard work by our library staff to integrate cyber safety into every aspect of our library operations.” The council will celebrate the eSmart accreditation at Dandenong Library on Tuesday 9 February at 1.30pm.

Nicole Rich says legal aid will be available to more disadvantaged people from 1 March. 149841

Community Support Grants Program 2016. The City of Greater Dandenong’s Community Support Grants Program provides funding for innovative community projects.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS VICTORIA Legal Aid has announced a more generous means test for legal assistance to people who can’t afford a private lawyer. Nicole Rich, executive director of VLA’s Westernport region, said the updated means test from 1 March was fairer, acknowledging a lot of disadvantaged people who struggle to pay for a lawyer have “missed out”. “The general point of legal aid is it’s there for people who can’t afford to pay for their own lawyer. “The most intensive help is for people most in need of help, such as those facing jail. “A lot of people miss out on that because there’s only a finite amount of legal aid funds.” The means test is expected

to deliver 700 more legal assistance grants a year. It has been adjusted to take into account soaring cost-of-living expenses such as child care and house rent, which will be particularly crucial for clients in Greater Dandenong, There’s higher asset thresholds, lifting allowable home equity from $300,000 to $500,000 as well as other cut-off levels. This could potentially help a disability pensioner, who might own their own home - which has rocketed in value - but are otherwise income-poor. Ms Rich predicts the change will have a big impact in the family law area. Often the means test can potentially determine which partner gets the help of a lawyer during mediation or court hearings.

Ms Rich gives the example of a woman, who may have left the home due to family violence and so gets the family car to take the kids to school. The woman may be denied legal aid because her “humble” vehicle may be worth more than the $11,280 vehicle equity threshold. From March, that threshold will be lifted to $20,000. VLA legal practice executive director Kristen Hilton said even under the extended means test, too many people would miss out on help. “We know that better access to justice requires increased government investment in the legal assistance sector and implementation of the Productivity Commission’s recommendation for an extra $200 million would begin to address existing need.”

Set for the big league By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong should be home to an A-League soccer team in the next five to 10 years, according to councillor Jim Memeti. The council area, with its rising numbers of soccer players, would be a natural fit for Victoria’s next A-League side outside Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City. Cr Memeti thinks the ready-made fanbase – extending into Casey and Cardinia – could create a passionate club along the lines of the Western Sydney Wanderers. “Soccer is growing at a ridiculous rate. We have more teams in Greater Dandenong than any other municipality in the state. “If (Football Federation Australia) wants to grow the game nationally, the south-east of Melbourne should be the next place to locate a club.” Cr Memeti said the council had been in talks with Melbourne’s A-League teams about setting up a local junior academy. He said it would offer children “opportunities to reach their highest potential” as well as creating social dividends. “There should always be opportunities for all kids to play team sports with adult supervision. It’s better than having them out on the streets.” According to the council’s 2014 sports facilities report, the sport also has more registered players in the municipality than Australian Rules. In the past six years, its numbers have risen to 1918 players while Aussie Rules has dropped to 1395. Two possible sites for an A-League club are Greaves Reserve and Tatterson Park, both nominated by the council as venues for a possible soccer hub, with its A-grade pitch, two synthetic pitches, an overflow pitch, a futsal court and pavilion.

Jim Memeti is spruiking for a Greater Dandenogn A-League team. 149759 Cr Memeti said Greaves Reserve is ideal for its proximity to Dandenong and Yarraman railway stations, and EastLink. Tatterson Park is also set to receive a $10 million pavilion and grandstand within the next two years. The council’s draft plan for the hub has yet to be endorsed and would require an external partner and funding to meet

its significant cost, according to the council report. Mark Doubleday, the council’s community director, said the council would be prepared to talk to groups interested in setting up a local A-League side. He said the council had to take into the account how such a plan could be a winwin for residents and an A-League club.

“One of council’s key goals is building partnerships that benefit residents.” He said Greaves Reserve site was a “worthwhile” option for further development but current groups and clubs had to be taken into account. “Cr Memeti is right to think this could be a success and council would need to take into account all views in any future planning on this.”

Threat empties college KEYSBOROUGH College was evacuated due to a hoax threat about 8.40am on Thursday morning 4 February. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said a man had approached a student outside the Noble Park campus, who “relayed a threat to the school and the students”. Police were determining the circumstances of the incident and whether an offence had occurred, she said. Principal John Baston confirmed the threat did not fit in the pattern of hundreds of recent automated hoax calls received by schools across Australia since 29 January. Mr Baston said the received threat warned: “Something is going to happen”. All students were then evacuated as police searched the school “end to end”, he said. After the all-clear, students returned to classes by noon. “The kids are well at the moment,” Mr Baston said. The evacuation followed similar scares at schools across Victoria over the past week. In those cases the bomb threats were made in automated telephone calls.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR History takes same route I whole heartedly agree with Cr Roz Blades in her push to reopen Maralinga Primary School in Keysborough. I also agree with all the other correspondents that the area around Maralinga school is indeed redeveloping, with new families moving in all the time. We already have four youngsters on either side of us. But the main point I want to raise is the fact that it is now 54 years since the families around the Chandler Road area found themselves in the same position as those families in Keysborough South. We had no bus service, no shops, no school or kindergarten. The only shop in Chandler Road was a lock-up milkbar. This was the reason The Chandler Civic Association was formed. I believe the two situations are so alike that it

is history repeating itself. We had around 400 children needing a school to go to. The Education Department decided that our children would have to go to Dandenong West Primary School. They would be taken to and from school by bus. This went on until Yarram Primary School was built then all our youngsters were transferred to that school, still taken by bus. When Chandler Primary School was finally built, another transfer was done. This meant our two eldest went to three different schools in their short primary years. I strongly believe that Maralinga Primary School is the ideal answer for the Education Department to take care of the needs of those families in Keysborough South while they work out when and where a local school is built. Because Maralinga has not been closed that long, all that should be needed is a good clean-up. Then school staff can finally make arrange-

ments for school buses to do their part. Maralinga school is a lot closer than Dandenong West was back them. If the Education Department could do it in the 1960s why can’t they do it now in 2016. Bob Malcolm, Keysborough.

Aborted lives AN ADVERTISEMENT on a bridge over Princes Highway, Noble Park, leading to Sandown Racecourse that faces south-easterly travellers reads ‘No one deserves to die on our roads’. The same public concern should be expressed for the approximately 20,000 innocent, unborn Victorians killed annually in their mothers’ wombs as a result of our heinous abortion law. They don’t deserve to die, especially as none of them ever deliberately or carelessly risk their own lives or those of others. Peter Phillips, Springvale.

Don’t risk our children I WAS shocked to learn that the number of Victorian motorists who have been caught speeding through 40km/h zones has almost tripled last year to 280,000. The harsh reality is that each and every one of these drivers is putting their own and other road users’ lives at risk, including the thousands of children who returned to school in recent weeks. As a motor vehicle accident lawyer, I have met many road trauma victims, including young children. And as a mother myself, I find it heartbreaking to see the devastation that a speeding driver can cause. While it may seem like an inconvenience to have to slow down, the fact of the matter is that reduced speed zones save lives. Joanne Panagakis, Motor Vehicle Accident Lawyer, Slater and Gordon.

Still grateful for new life By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS FOR former Vietnamese refugee Be Ha, her 35plus years of ongoing charitable and communityminded work is payback. The Greater Dandenong Community Hall of Fame inductee still feels indebted for the kindness and sacrifice that allowed her to escape from communist Vietnam in a small fishing boat with her husband, two children and sister in 1979. The 150 passengers had just a week’s rations of food and water. Ms Ha said it was a “miracle” that they arrived in Australia despite towering seas, pirates and near starvation. It was amazing to see the bright lights of Melbourne after Vietnam’s communist regime had consigned them to poverty, stealing their land, homes, money and choices, she said. “I felt reborn.” She is overcome with tears when she thinks back to the fishing boat’s captain. He had bravely led a mutiny against the Thai pirates who captured all the men and left the women and children to starve on the fishing boat. While stowed in the hull, the young captain, with three other captives, jumped the pirates. In the scuffle, the captain was slain by a pirate’s sword. “If it were not for their sacrifices, we would have surely died,” Ms Ha said. There’s special mention to the kind Captain Sloan on the British cargo ship Entalina who later rescued Ms Ha and the other passengers from starving after a month on the sea. “Many, many ships passed by without rescuing us. “On the day he rescued us, the sea was very rough. As the last of us was rescued, a great big wave came and took out the fishing boat. “It was a miracle of God.” From that came her determination to pay it forward to those who “opened their hearts”. She, like many refugees, wanted to help build the country that has given them a new home. Her first stop, after quarantine detention, was

Greater Dandenong Community Hall of Fame inductee Be Ha. the Enterprise Hostel in Springvale in 1980. There she and her family made life-long friends, practised English, learnt new skills and

foods and what it meant to be Australian. “We painted dreams for our new bright future,” she said.

In 1982, she and her friends started several not-for-profit organisations including Springvale Indo-Chinese Mutual Assistance Association (SICMAA). To this day, SICMAA delivers help to the Vietnamese community, such as its large numbers of problem gamblers and, until recently, ice addicts. Ms Ha, the organisation’s president, said many Vietnamese families had been destroyed by pokies. It had spurred family violence and ensnared even professional adults into financial ruin. She recently refused to write a letter of support for Springvale RSL’s push to increase its poker machines, despite the RSL helping her establish a community garden. “I said no way. You’ve helped me but that’s just a drop in the ocean. “Our people have suffered enough.” Ms Ha continues to fight for government funding to revive SICMAA’s ice-addict counselling program. She argues the $70,000 annual cost is more than repaid by helping young people become drug-free. She has also founded the Hoa Nghiem Buddhist temple in Springvale, initiated and run the Springvale Children’s Festival, and is treasurer of the Vietnamese Cultural Heritage Centre including the Vietnam War memorial at Dandenong RSL. Her other causes include Melbourne’s Vietnamese Lions Club branch, the state’s Vietnamese Community in Australia chapter and tinrattling for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. It’s been hard to balance her community devotion with her family life, but her children support and take part in her charitable work. There is an overarching pride in her work, of continuing to pay back the freedom and kindness she has received. “People accepted me like a good Australian person, not just as from a community overseas,” she said of her life in Springvale. “Everyone is equal.”

Mary enjoys a lucky life By NARELLE COULTER WHEN Mary Colquhoun celebrated her 100th birthday on 29 January there was one very important person missing - her identical twin sister Alice. Born an hour apart in 1916, Mary and Alice spent 97 years together before Alice’s death in 2013. “They were soulmates and she was very sad Alice wasn’t there to join the celebration with her,” said Mary’s son Bob Powell. “When Alice died mum said she felt like she had lost her right arm.” Mary celebrated her remarkable milestone with not one but two parties. On 29 January she celebrated with her friends at the Outlook Gardens nursing home in Dandenong North. And on Sunday 31 January Mary was joined by more than 100 family and friends for a second celebration at the Dandenong Club. In his speech, manager of the Dandenong Club Charlie Daly, whose father went to school with Mary at Archies Creek, remarked that Mary had the distinction of being the club’s oldest card carrying member. She still pops into the Dandenong Club occasionally for dinner. Another good friend, councillor Angela Long, spoke of their shared passion for bingo and how Mary and Alice are immortalised in the centenary mural which hangs in the council offices near the library. The most heartfelt tribute came from grandson Justin Colquhoun. “Justin was glowing in his affection for Grandma Mary. He said that no matter what they did she never got cross and was always good at giving cuddles,” Bob said. Mary has five grand-children and seven great-grandchildren.

Also present was a representative of the Victorian Multiple Birth Association. Mary and Alice were born at Wonthaggi to Elizabeth and Robert Suckling. In her memoir, written when she was 96, Mary reminisced about growing up in a large rural family. “When we arrived there were already eight children in the family and another son was born five years later in 1921, which made 11 children - six boys and five girls. “Looking back over 96 years, I still believe that even though we were such a large family we did have a fairly happy childhood. “Our parents experienced the disruption of the Great War of 1914-1918 and the Depression years and had to battle for survival all their married life and, yes, we were poor but we never went hungry. “Mum could make a meal out of so little. I don’t think that our family noticed the Depression much as we had been on the poverty line for years. “We seldom had new clothes and there were good second-hand clothing shops in Wonthaggi. “I do know that we all felt loved and were thoroughly spoilt, I’ll admit that.” Mary fell in love with Bert Powell and the couple married on 1935 and moved to Bass to manage a farm. Their son Robert was born on 3 November. Tragically Bert died of tuberculosis before the couple could celebrate their first wedding anniversary. By the time war broke out in 1939 Mary had become friendly with John Colquhoun who worked on her fatherin-law’s farm. John (Jack) was called up by the army and the couple married on the 16

Mary had a second son, John, on 4 November 1944. After the war, Jack and Mary sharefarmed on three farms in the Gippsland area and owned 15 acres in Woolamai. Jack worked for the Wonthaggi Council and in Dandenong for the Westminster Carpet Factory. In 1956 the family moved to Dandenong. “We bought a small home at 143 Cleeland Street and an old Chevy car

first and then later a Holden. “Money was tight so I went to work in the fruit shop in Cleeland Street just a few doors from home. “I was there for three years. It was tiring work lifting heavy boxes of fruit and vegetables. “Then I spent the next three years at the Dandenong Hospital where I worked as a cleaner washing the floors throughout the nurses’ quarters.” The couple eventually sold Clee-

land Street and bought a brick veneer house in May Court, Dandenong. Mary later worked for the council in its home help program. Jack and second son John both died in 2003. “She has lost two husbands and son. All her siblings and their partners have gone. She is the only one left,” said Bob. “However, she just keeps saying ‘I am so lucky’.”

COVER STORY

BUYERS BID FOR LUSH LIVING \ 5 RIVERSTONE BOULEVARD, CLYDE NORTH Berwick Waters, the signature masterplanned community by Frasers Property Australia and Mondous Property Australia, has announced a significant upcoming event. An auction of three dream blocks of land in The Strand precinct – all facing the expanse of established wetlands – is scheduled for Saturday 20 February. The pick of the bunch of these land lots is the development’s first ever quarter-acre block, boasting a water outlook in two directions. The other two blocks are more than 600 square metres and are expected to be top of the list for eager buyers. According to Frasers Property’s development director Jill Lim, who is proud of the evolution of this landmark estate, land lots of this size and in such prized positions are not common, even in new developments. “Berwick Waters is a flagship development that continues to attract tremendous interest. The release of these blocks is quite special,” she said. “The Strand is an exciting precinct with a stunning vista of water views and lush surrounds perfect for young families or empty nesters looking for living options that suit their interests and needs.” Upon completion, homes at Berwick Waters will be set among 52 hectares of tranquil wetlands with nine kilometres of walking and bike trails, fitness stations and picturesque viewing platforms over the wetlands making for inspirational living. Interested bidders can inspect the blocks on a tour this weekend and prior to the 11am auction, which will be held in a marquee in the Waterfront Park. Preregistration is required to enable bidding on 20 February. Berwick Waters is at 5 Riverstone Boulevard, Clyde North (Melway reference: 131 C8). For further information, contact Frasers Property on 133 838.

NEW HOMES & LAND

WIDE RANGE OF HOMES TO SUIT Aaron J Homes has been building quality homes for more than nine years and is proud of the fact that it has successfully completed approximately 400 homes to date. Being a local family builder and very much hands-on in all aspects of the business, the owners are well aware of what their clients need, want, expect and deserve in a quality product. Every display home built by Aaron J Homes is constructed with many of the same contractors that helped build its first display home. These same contractors help build each client’s home to ensure the quality and construction is maintained as per display standard, a true testament of the relationship the owners have with their tradies. Being a multi award winning builder, including having won major awards with the HIA and MBAV, its clients can have the confidence of knowing their home will be completed on time and supported by excellent customer service. Aaron J Homes has two distinct ranges within its product line with more than 70 designs to choose from with different sizes and facades available. The Xpress range of homes, between 16 to 24 squares, is suited more to the first or second home buyer or investor client with prices from as low as $129,900 to $170,200. The Infinity range of homes is for the more astute buyers who like that little bit extra included and has larger home sizes available between 19 to 40 squares and prices from $173,200 to $317,900. The Xpress range comes with a guaranteed build time of 16 weeks while

the Infinity range has average build times of approximately 18 to 20 weeks, subject to house design and site conditions. And even if a client can’t decide on a design that they like, Aaron J Homes is quite happy to customise one of its own designs to suit. Aaron J Homes is proud to include value plus inclusions at no extra charge that many other builders call extras. Standard inclusions such as feature plaster niches and voids, polished edge mirrors, semi-frameless shower screens, kitchen overhead cupboards, stainless steel appliances, window locks, Colorbond fascia and gutters are just a few and that is only the Xpress range let alone the Infinity range which has much

more included. There are four displays currently available at Pakenham and Warragul showcasing the two ranges. Two exciting new displays in Clyde are due to open mid-year. Aaron J Homes is happy to build anywhere from Healesville to Rosebud, inner city to Warragul and even as far away as Traralgon. For further information, visit a display centre, look them up on the web at aaronjhomes.com.au or contact 1300 AARONJ (1300 227 665) and speak to one of the friendly sales consultants. Display centres are open from Saturday to Wednesday, noon to 5pm, or by appointment.

EDUCATION AND OPEN DAYS

Parents lead the way at Maranatha AS the oldest parent controlled Christian school in Victoria, Maranatha Christian School has always been a leader in providing high quality Christian education. With its focus on high academic outcomes, genuine student care and opportunity for students to serve by using their God given skills and talents, Maranatha graduates can be found across Victoria contributing to and building a better society. 2015 was no exception to this. Building on its excellent NAPLAN results, Maranatha students excelled in the 2015 VCE. School valedictorian Paul Michalski achieved a remarkable ATAR of 99.5 while Stephen Capon, the 2015 boys school captain, achieved 98.65. In addition, Jordi Sutato and Sarah Ciortuz finished first in Victoria in their subjects, Indonesian and Romanian respectively. This is a testament to the hard work of both students and staff. Across the board it has been wonderful to see the students fulfil the school’s motto, My Utmost for His Glory, by giving of their best, with more than 80 per cent of all students achieving results which placed them in the top half of the state. Maranatha continues to lead Christian education in a number of innovative ways to help students become the leaders of tomorrow. Its partnership with the Apple store at Fountain Gate to support the school’s iPad program is genuinely unique, while the teaching staff are all currently applying Teaching for Understanding, a teaching methodology designed at Harvard University with its Christian perspective to help children learn to think about the world through Christian values. The school will be hosting a conference on Developing Christian Thinkers in July, the first of its kind in Australia. For more information phone the school registrar on 9709 7217 or visit Maranatha.vic.edu.au.

Pre Kinder kids enjoy a session at the Hallam Community Learning Centre.

Useful sessions

Principal and CEO Dr Roderick Crouch.

THE Hallam Community Learning Centre is running Pre Kinder sessions for three and four-year-olds. The centre prides itself on preparing the children that attend these sessions for all sorts of things that might come their way. Last year, they learnt about different countries and were lucky enough to have had some mums come and sing happy birthday and nursery rhymes in

their native languages. Other topics covered included science with erupting volcanos, Da vinci paintings during art time and nature and wild animals. The centre can’t wait to see what the staff have in store for 2016. The kids also hosted morning tea for Mother’s and Father’s Day making yummy scones with jam and cream. Currently, there are vacancies for the 2016 sessions so why

not call on 9703 1688. The centre has undergone a massive renovation since November last year, thanks to the City of Casey, and staff are looking forward to welcoming the groups, starting Monday 8 February. The answering machine is on and we are checking messages. Hallam Community Learning Centre is situated at 56 Kays Avenue, Hallam.

Diverse range of opportunities LOCATED in the heart of Endeavour Hills and within walking distance of the shopping centre and library, the neighbourhood centre may be one of the area’s best kept secrets. The Endeavour Hills UnitingCare Neighbourhood Centre (EHUNC) is a not-for-profit adult learning centre that delivers a diverse range of low cost classes including English, computer, art, craft and recreational exercise. It also has children’s services such as occasional care, three-year-old pre-kinder and after school activities. Manager Bev Lamont said: “Even though the centre is small, we aim to provide a caring, nurturing, learning environment open to all members of the community. “We provide classes and activities that are innovative and applicable to a wide range of ages and cultural backgrounds. “Many of the people who come to the centre enjoy the friendly atmosphere created by the welcoming staff and talented, caring teachers. “Our participants make meaningful friendships that go beyond the classroom. “Some of our friendship groups, like the knitting group and patchwork group, share their love of craft to the greater community by donating hundreds of handmade items to charity each year.” This year the neighbourhood centre has received funding from the City of Casey to deliver free computer and iPad classes for seniors. It also has Victorian State Government funding to hold low-cost English classes for migrants who are permanent residents. More information about any of the classes and activities can be found on the neighbourhood centre website at www.ehunc.org.au or phone 9700 3789 to have a term program posted out.

Same numbers add up By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS MORE than $650,000 has been shared by 11 syndicate members at Tattslotto outlets in Dandenong and Springvale. Dande Lotto owner Verica Beliga said the head of the syndicate thought his leg was being pulled when he was told that he was a joint division-one winner in the 30 January Tattslotto draw. The man - a local business owner - had routinely submitted the same five lines of System 10 numbers every Saturday at the Thomas Street outlet for the past 20 years, Ms Beliga said. “He told me he’s going to put in the same numbers this Saturday,” Ms Beliga said. Three of the syndicate shares were also bought at Springvale Authorised Newsagency and Lotto. Over those 20 years, a few people had dropped out of the syndicate - and now were no doubt kicking themselves, she said. The winners are each $62,798 richer and

relieved of a few financial burdens. One of them was a new father who had recently taken on additional borrowing to secure a home loan. That loan can now be paid outright. One other family was struggling to manage after a bread-winner recently had her work hours cut. Ms Beliga had the pleasant task of correcting a syndicate member who thought he’d won just a division-two share of about $13,000. “I told him ‘well I’ll keep the other 50’ (thousand dollars),” Ms Beliga said. She now basks in the reflected good fortune - the agency’s first division-one win since she took over three years ago. “Now that we’ve had a win, I feel that yes it can happen,” Ms Beliga said. In a way, she feels she struck it lucky when she bought the business after months of struggling to find work. “It’s been the best thing for me. I’m my own boss - I can play the radio whenever I want and nothing can stop me.”

Verica Beliga and husband Joe celebrate the syndicate's windfall. 149729

Market hosts a wonderful day of Maori culture DANDENONG Market celebrated Waitangi Day on Sunday 7 February with performances and activities for market visitors. Waitangi Day commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on 6 February 1840. The treaty made New Zealand a part of the British Empire, guaranteed Maori rights to their land and gave Maoris the same rights as British subjects.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Chipping in for biofuels By NARELLE COULTER REBECCA Yee and her business partner Dale Barnett are big fans of the humble fish and chip dinner. The more people tuck into this takeaway staple the more source product the entrepreneurial duo has for their fledging biofuel business. Rebecca and Dale’s Dandenong South business, Biofuel Innovations, turns waste oil into biodiesel, an environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum diesel. Rebecca, who has a doctorate in chemical engineering and Dale, who is also an engineer, met through friends. They share a commitment to sustainability which has now grown into a business. “It all started because Dale was brewing his own beer and using biofuel to run his car,” explained Rebecca. “I love gardening and grow a lot of my own food. We both shared a passion for sustainability and both thought we had the know how to make a contribution.” In an Australian first, the pair have perfected a second generation technology method which uses a natural catalyst enzyme to convert used fish and chip fryer oil into biodiesel. About 10 Greater Dandenong fish and chip shops store their waste oil for Rebecca and Dale to collect once a month. They also collected the waste oil from the weekend’s Lunar New Year celebrations in Springvale. “A lot of people don’t think about their waste,” said Rebecca. “Fish and chip shop owners have a lot of things to manage and in many cases up to 20 litres of oil a week is just dumped,” Rebecca said. Much of Australia’s waste commercial cooking oil is sent overseas. “We export our waste oil then import it back again, but we don’t know what has been done to it. We essentially wash our hands of it. That’s where we want to get involved. “We want fuel that is Melbourne made,” Rebecca said.

Rebecca Yee is making a contribution to both business and the environment. 149723 Picture: GARY SISSONS

Biodiesel can be used in any diesel engine without modification as a replacement for fossil diesel. Biodiesel’s lubricating qualities helps prolong an engine’s life and is much better than diesel for the environment with cleaner exhaust emissions and zero sulphur emissions. Biofuel Innovations sells its fuel wholesale direct to trucking and transport companies for $1.10 per litre. Biofuel Innovations also sells glycerine, a by-product of the refining process, which is used for soap, cosmetics and candles and as a hand degreaser. At the moment, the company is producing 30,000 litres of biofuel a month. Rebecca said that would be scaled up once the business moves to

new permanent premises in England Street at the start of April. “Demand is out there, it’s just a matter of finding the right people interested in sustainable fuel. A lot of businesses we talk to are very supportive. “A lot of people are particularly keen on the whole made in Melbourne aspect of our business, that our product is made by accredited engineers to accredited standards.” Before Christmas Biofuel Innovations was awarded an $8000 City of Greater Dandenong business grant. Rebecca and Dale are using the money to fund their move to a larger factory and buy equipment. “The grant has really helped us get

a foot in the door with a lease.” They are delighted to be part of the Dandenong South business community, which has welcomed them with plenty of expert help and friendly advice. Through the business grant process, Rebecca met follow recipient Mona Lumani, owner of Arabian Bites. Biofuel Innovations is now collecting Arabian Bites’s waste oil. “Dale grew up in Endeavour Hills and I grew up in Wantirna so Dandenong South was perfect for our business,” Rebecca said. “I love that whatever we need, like a steel or glass fitter for instance, you can find them here in Dandenong. You

draw up a plan, they make it and we go pick it up.” And she and Dale love popping into central Dandenong for lunch, lured by the array of international fare on offer. However, fish and chips are not high on their list of lunch favourites. As Rebecca shows the Journal around the firm’s temporary factory, she lifts the lid off a drum of newly arrived waste oil. “Initially working with this oil did put us off eating fish and chips but you do get used to it,” she said. For more information on Biofuel Innovations email info@biofuelsinnovations.com.au.

Convenient legal advice when and where you need it ADVICELINE Injury Lawyers has just completed the second expansion of its Springvale office since opening it in 2011 as it responds to increasing demands for legal advice in the suburban areas of Melbourne. A team of one partner, a senior associate, a lawyer and four support staff now work in the office. The expansion has seen three offices, two workspaces and a boardroom added. Head partner of the Springvale office Bree Knoester said: “Being

based in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs means that our clients do not have to travel into the city to access expert legal advice if they have been injured at work, in a public place or in a traffic accident - or if they suffer from an asbestos related disease. “This new extension has seen the installation of offices for additional staff and larger meeting facilities which means we are able to meet with more clients and offer a greater range of legal services.”

Recently appointed senior associate Naomi Riggs, who will shortly return from maternity leave, will be based in the expanded Springvale office, occasionally also working out of the Melbourne CBD office. Naomi is an experienced litigator and specialises in personal injury and employment law. Adviceline demonstrated its ongoing commitment to the local community as Presenting Partner of the 2015 Springvale Lunar New Year Festival, and has already confirmed

its support of the 2016 event. Ms Knoester said: “Adviceline is proud to once again support the community we work in and give back when we can. “We are a multicultural office that speaks four languages so we are a perfect fit for this very diverse part of Melbourne.” Contact Bree and the team at the Springvale Office, 369C Springvale Road, Springvale. Pavilion a smash hit By JARROD POTTER ANOTHER sporting landmark on the Greaves Reserve map was officially opened on Saturday as the City of Greater Dandenong unveiled the redeveloped Alan Carter Pavilion. After undergoing a significant upgrade courtesy of the council’s $1.34 million contribution to the Dandenong facility - the pavilion will be a year-round haven for the region’s cricket, soccer and rugby league players. The three major tenants - Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club, South East Titans Rugby League Club and White Star Dandenong Soccer Club - are set to benefit greatly from the pavilion renovations. The works included the refurbishment and extension of the existing pavilion and improvements to change rooms, shower and toilets as well as a multi-purpose space, canteen, commercial kitchen, storage rooms, first aid room and umpires rooms. The pavilion was opened by Mayor Heang Tak, who believes the facility is a boon for Greater Dandenong and will encourage residents to come along and try out the tenant sports at the reserve. “It’s a fantastic venue for our sports so that our residents near and far can come and help have a healthy lifestyle,” councillor Tak said. “We’ve been waiting for a long time and today is the day we’ve come to celebrate at the start of the year and the start of the season.” Dandenong WCC coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick said the redevelopment will improve the club’s professionalism as well as cater for even more junior players from the south eastern suburbs. “Being involved in community sport is exactly that - community,” Fitzpatrick said. “I know we’ve got an elite program running - in that we’ve got Australian players and Women’s’ BBL players out there - but this is really about bringing the young girls through. “It’s a vibrant precinct here and it’s long overdue, but it’s fantastic.” With five fields, tennis courts and the Gloria Pyke Netball Complex, Greaves Reserve stands

as one of the biggest and most inclusive sporting facilities in the state. The pavilion opening also included the presentation of the Redderz Cup, held in memory of Carey ‘Redderz’ Cook.

The council is set to commence its next major sporting facility project this year - a multi-million dollar soccer development going into Tatterson Park, Keysborough.

While Big Bash and Governor General XI selection were amazing, Molineux rated Victoria’s under-18 championships victory as her season highlight. Picture: CRICKET VICTORIA

Sophie Molineux’s cricketing summer has been highlight after highlight – starting with her selection for the Melbourne Renegades in the Women's Big Bash League. Picture: GETTY IMAGES

In a league of her own By JARROD POTTER FOR many it would be hard to top Sophie Molineux’s 2015-16 season, but the Dandenong Lions’ all-rounder is no ordinary cricketer. For someone who has only just turned 18, the cricketing world has been at her beck and call this year with a cavalcade of phenomenal achievements. The Bairnsdale girl’s 2015-16 resume is better than most players’ whole careers: she played for the Melbourne Renegades in the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League, picked for the Australian Governor General’s XI and captained the Victorian under-18s to a national championship victory.

And to cap it off she’s been sensational whenever she could don the Dandenong colours after smashing her maiden first XI century, smashing 112 against Box Hill in October. Even with the senior successes she had with the Renegades and the national-level selection, her greatest joy from this year was winning the national championship – captaining Victoria to a 59-run win over NSW Metropolitan in the final. She averaged 62.5 in the championships with three half-tons including a match-defining 59 in the finale. “Probably the national championship – just winning that,” Molineux said. “Taking the national championship

we had a great bunch of girls and was great to win it as it was a long time coming. “All the hard work we’ve done throughout the year we put into practice and we pretty comfortably won every game which was good to see. “It was huge to be involved - just to see how far women’s cricket has come in the last three months – it’s grown so much and the profiles of so many girls have just risen,” Molineux said. “You’ve got to sort of sit back and pinch yourself as it’s happened so quick – and happened too quick for a lot of girls in this Big Bash. “There’s so much exposure that’s happening in women’s cricket and it’s good to be a part of.”

While it wasn’t a successful tournament for the Renegades – finishing last – the women in red upset eventual premiers Sydney Thunder on television as one of many highlights from Molineux’s inaugural campaign. “I think beating the Thunder on Etihad Stadium on a televised game was huge for us,” Molineux said. “We were on the bottom and they were on the top and for us to go out there and beat them pretty easily was fairly special.” She was also one of the inaugural Australians picked for the GovernorGeneral’s XI to play India and even though the match was rained out, Molineux loved every second in her first international-level clash.

Her cricketing ambitions will be put on the back foot this year, though, with her VCE studies taking priority. But Molineux is determined to get back to the crease as much as possible in 2016. “I start year 12 so I’m going to have to juggle cricket at home – for West Bairnsdale – and Dandenong and school at once – so I’ll see how many games I can get in with Dandenong this year and next season I’ll be able to play most games,” Molineux said. “Love to win a few games with Dandy – they’ve been struggling the last couple of months but it would be good to get back there and help out as much as I can… and just keep enjoying my cricket.”

Demons are hot on the talent trail By JARROD POTTER SOUTH-EASTERN footballers will get a chance to join the Melbourne Demons through a new talent pathway program. Introduced across the state for all Victorian clubs this year, the south-east is where Melbourne Football Club’s Next Generation AFL Academy will be located. Allocated to the Dandenong Stingrays’ TAC Cup region across the southeast from Mornington-Peninsula, Casey and Greater Dandenong - the Melbourne Demons will join the ranks to cultivate and develop junior talent entering the TAC Cup. The Demons’ south-east academy is one of 10 set up by the AFL to get 1118 boys and girls from diverse backgrounds or with indigenous heritage to, hopefully, play elite football, while also raising the talent pool within those areas. While many of the academy’s details were yet to be finalised, the Demons were thrilled to play its part in the south-east’s elite football future. “We’re excited to start up the Next Generation AFL Academy and give south-east Melbourne’s boys and girls a new football opportunity,” a Melbourne Football Club spokesman said. “Seeing the more of region’s talented juniors follow the path of south-

eastern footballers, like Nathan Jones and Ellie Blackburn, into the Demons is something we’re keen to develop further in the next few years.” Dandenong Stingrays region manager Mark Wheeler sees the Melbourne academy as an extension of the successful Stingrays/Demons multicultural academy - known last year as the Jimmy Toumpas Squad. “The diversity program is to work off what was started here with the Jimmy Toumpas Squad,” Wheeler said. “Having it aligned to an AFL club – it’s to help generate some interest from diversity and multicultural areas so we’ll be aligned to Melbourne and it will be aimed at those kids who aren’t currently aligned to football. “We’ve only got 450 on our books but we could have 2000 players in this academy in that zone. “With high level sports – basketball, cricket, soccer – that’s where they’re aiming it at and can attract some of those boys and girls.” With Greater Dandenong and Casey leading the state for diversity and migrant communities who might not have played football before – including the Stingrays ruckman Gach Nyuon just recruited by Essendon – the program is set to boost the chances for many young footballers this season and beyond.

“Pete Dye has done an amazing job with our AusKick program and the Jimmy Toumpas Squad... and this academy will take that even further so we can attract those five to 10 young boys or girls who can’t get into footy because of either access or socio-economic reasons,” Wheeler said. “It’s all about that little extra push to grab a few of those talented players.” The program isn’t just for the boys most importantly and Wheeler thought the academy would get the south-east’s young girls to speed up their development and potentially push all the way through the Stingrays Youth Girls Academy onwards to Melbourne’s AFL Women’s team. “It’s a huge push by the AFL, which we are 100 per cent supportive with our program,” Wheeler said. “The future of footy is really strong in the female arena but we’ve got to push it and develop it more in that arena. “By the time they roll out this academy and what we’re doing with the youth girls academy – you need to know how to stretch and work on your fitness before you play a game of footy – that’s the idea of playing those academies.” Melbourne’s region has been altered slightly from the Dandenong Stingrays’ region as the City of Frankston will be with St Kilda’s academy area.

Bloods, Eagles on the hunt By JARROD POTTER DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 9 (Day 2) THE colours were on show Saturday as Springvale South flexed its one-day muscles again to build a handy buffer atop the DDCA Turf 1 ladder. SPRINGVALE SOUTH v PARKFIELD Brutalising Parkfield (52) in a 31-over massacre, Springvale South (0/55) showed no mercy to capture yet another win - the seventh of the season for the high-flying Bloods. Tim Ford (5/18) took matters into his hands early. He devastated the Bears’ top order - sending four men back to the sheds in four consecutive balls; snaring a rare double hat-trick at the local level. A fifth Bear soon went back to hibernation as Nilochana Perera (0) lost his bails to ... you guessed it, Ford. Travis D’Souza (15no) held on valiantly as the procession of wickets continued at the other end via Jarrod Armitage (2/12) and Matt Wetering (2/11) joining the party to stop the innings quickly. The chase was even quicker than the initial hunt for wickets; Dylan Quirk (27no) and Michael Vandort (22no) did it in a canter to leave Parkfield speechless come day’s end. DANDENONG WEST v HALLAM KALORA PARK In the only white-clothed Turf 1 clash, Dandenong West’s (167) efforts last week proved enough to vanquish Hallam Kalora Park (149) and effectively kill off the Hawks’ finals hopes. Led by Shaun Weir (5/36), the Bulls put in their best performance of the season to roll all and sundry. Leigh Booth (36) was a lone Hallam hold out, but even his efforts soon fell apart. His wicket proved the catalyst for demise as the Hawks slumped after the evergreen allrounder fell. Peter Atkinson (3/39) finished the job as he and Weir burdened the workload to rattle off 50 overs between them. CRANBOURNE v BUCKLEY RIDGES Buckley Ridges (88) had its finals hopes quashed by Cranbourne (5/89) after a woeful collapse at Casey Fields. The Ridges’ recognised bats were held to ransom by Eagles’ devastators Matt Chasemore (4/6) and Steve Spoljaric (3/25). The visitors’ top four barely registered a peep,

falling to 4/10 in the opening few overs. It left the heavy lifting to Paul Rudd (27) and the skipper Dan Watson (16), but even they fell after the defences were ripped to shreds. Cranbourne’s Ben Ingham (2/13) - making his Turf 1 debut - skittled Rudd and Lukas Hoogenboom (9) to start his top grade career in style. The chase had similar hiccups - especially against Hoogenboom (3/13) - but in the end Spoljaric (27no) and Chasemore (29) did the damage once again to take Cranbourne to its fifth win in a row. NORTH DANDENONG v BERWICK Middle order mastery from Berwick (8/165) and some nuanced bowling was more than enough to blow away North Dandenong (63). Ryan Crawford (51) grit his teeth and held on through the middle overs alongside Josh Holden (36) and Jack Williams (25). The trio then counterattacked to set a par-target for the Northerners, but it would be far too much for them to chase. Matt Crosby (3/14) and Williams (3/11) had a spinner’s field day running through the hosts, taking only 30 overs to complete the rout and bolster its finals credentials heading into the final rounds. NARRE WARREN v LYNDALE Narre Warren (5/273) bounced away from the bottom with a sensational 111-run victory over Lyndale (162). The Magpies’ charge was left by Janaka Liyanabadalge (138), who helped rescue his side after two early wickets. With support from Wendell Perumal (40) and the skipper Kaushalya Weeraratne (43), Narre Warren set an impressive stage with the blade and finished it with the ball. Perumal (3/18) and Steve Woodward (2/23) cleaned up the Dales with seven overs to spare. The win also ensures the Magpies can not be relegated in their first season back up to Turf 1 - making for plenty of celebrations at Sweeney Reserve. VSDCA NORTH/EAST 1ST XI - ROUND 11 (One Day) In the Subbies’ one-day round, Noble Park and Endeavour Hills had similar disappointing fortunes. The Bulls were overrun by Brunswick (6/182)

Susantha Pradeep slashes hard for Buckley Ridges - one of the only positive strokes from Picture: JARROD POTTER its disastrous day at Cranbourne. 149892 and the loss leaves Noble Park (118) hanging on by a thread to a finals chance. Issy Perera (3/26) was miserly as usual with the ball, but struggled to hold down the highly ranked Wickers late in the innings. Taking to the pitch for a difficult run chase, Sanjeewa de Silva (25) was the best with the blade on a fairly average day for the visitors. Captain-coach Luke Wintle (23) stuck to the crease with a few other helpers in the middle order, but the efforts weren’t enough to give Noble Park the much needed six points. Jake Bradshaw’s (17no) cameo at the end was fun but not functional enough to get the Bulls the win. Noble Park has two rounds left to sneak into the finals and pray for other results to fall its way

Dandy Lions roar, Dandy Panthers sigh By JARROD POTTER WOMEN’S VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 16 (Twenty20) CHRISTENING its new-look pavilion in the best way possible, Dandenong Lions (3/95) sung the song proudly and loudly in the change rooms after a seven-wicket win over Essendon-Maribyrnong Park (6/94). City of Greater Dandenong councillors and staff members on hand to unveil the redeveloped Alan Carter Pavilion. With a vocal crowd right behind them, it created the perfect backdrop for Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club to start the next chapter in its storied history. It started with the ball as the ladder leader’s experienced heads - Emma Kearney (26) and skipper Briana Binch (20) - couldn’t curtail Dandenong’s attack. Chelsea Moscript (2/13) was exceptional with her spin as the Lions threw the ball around to eight bowlers to hold the Bombers to 6/94. The Lions’ response started poorly - losing Erica Kershaw (0) for a golden duck via Kearney (1/17) - but the tide turned quickly through a pair of Women’s Big Bash Leaguers. Captain Kelly Applebee (42no) and Sophie Molineux (44) carted the Bombers to all parts of Greaves Reserve. The shifting tempo came especially off the blade of Molineux who sensationally flat-batted a couple of sixes. The 86-run stand between Applebee and Molineux would prove criti-

Molineux succumbed late in the clash, holing out to Mikayla Haddow off Taylah Lynn (1/6), but her knock was more than enough to hold up her end of the bargain. It was a sensational display in only her fourth VPC clash this season - as Molineux has been off and about on state and WBBL duties throughout the summer.

Another to miss a large chunk of the season finished it off as Applebee struck the winning runs to keep Dandenong’s finals hopes alive, sitting two points off fourth placed Prahran. Dandenong Lions will face Prahran at home on Sunday. The Premier Cricket race is just about run and done for Dandenong (157 and 1/54). It’s hopes of making the Men’s competition final eight took a huge

blow on Saturday with its narrow first-innings loss to Melbourne Uni (224) Hopes were revived by a sensational bowling performance after the Panthers had to bat through tough, monsoonal conditions last weekend. At 8/128 the match remained in the balance. Dandenong’s spearheads Justin Butterfield (3/43) and Adam McMaster (2/61) seared through the top order. With Peter Cassidy (4/36) and Tanner Stanton working through the tail, the Panthers hopes were sadly dashed. It took a miraculous partnership from the scholars’ tailenders to avert crisis. The stellar ninthwicket stand between Steven Reid (66) and Elias Karageorgiou (35) turned the game on its head and left Dandenong scrambling to stop the onslaught. Reid in particular took to the Panthers’ attack and ensured Melbourne Uni would make the target and then some. Brenton Murphy (25no) and Cameron Forsyth (22no) saw out the overs on a tough day at the office in Dandenong’s second innings. Sitting 10 points outside the top eight, with only two rounds to go, it will take a lot of outright success to sneak the Panthers into Premier finals. It starts this round at home against Fitzroy-Doncaster before squaring off in the final home-andaway match against Greenvale.

- starting this weekend against second-placed Mt Waverley. Endeavour Hills (117) was blitzed by Plenty Valley (3/265) - especially the hosts’ opener Will Wright (137no). There wasn’t much the visitors could do to halt the Valley with bat or ball. Wright took the game away from the visiting Eagles early as he cashed in alongside Simon Bray (51) and fellow opener Harjinder Chahal (34). After a top order collapse, only only a middle order stand from Luke Cody (29) and Richard Saniga (28) saved any face for the Eagles. But that only delayed the inevitable as the Eagles slumped to their fifth loss in a row, leaving them securely fixed to the bottom of the VSDCA ladder.

Dandy destination WNBL - ROUND 16 TAKING the first win across a harrowing schedule, Dandenong’s WNBL finals spot seems secured after its 77-33 nail-biting victory over Sydney Uni. It was a first term shoot-out as neither side gave an inch ... but the second quarter opened a serious chasm between the two as the Flames lit it up. Sydney Uni’s nine-point margin at the mainbreak - bolstered by the shooting of Katie-Rae Ebzery (18 points), Tahlia Tupaea (16 points) and import Joslyn Tinkle (15 points) - could’ve broken the Rangers, but the visitors’ resolve was put to the test and stood tall in the second half. The tables turned dramatically through the third, but not before the Flames’ lead shot out to 11. Dandenong started to reel in the hosts as Steph Cumming (19 points) got her trademark jump shot going while Sara Blicavs (18 points, eight rebounds) started crashing the key and creating headaches for the under-sized Sydney defence. Amazingly Dandenong turned minus-nine into plus-four by the final change as Lauren Scherf (17 points, seven rebounds) starred once again off the bench - nailing two tricky field goals to vanquish the deficit completely before starting the side’s push ahead. The domination continued in the opposing end as the Rangers reeled in 33 defensive rebounds to monster the Flames 43-26 overall under the ring. Blicavs proved a game-changer through the final term as she had the ball on a string. The Australian Opals’ forward plucked an offensive board after her own missed three, hit the two-pointer before making a match-defining steal. Her next two pointer left the Flames on the back-foot as Dandenong’s lead ballooned to eight. The Flames brought it back to three late in the clash after a Tinkle trey, but Cumming showed the way to hit the match-winner and give Dandenong its 14th win of the season. Dandenong’s second clash of the weekend only 13 hours after its Flames’ win - was against Canberra in the nation’s capital on Sunday afternoon.

Battle hardened after tour By JARROD POTTER

Josh Battle, right, alongside Dandenong team mate Myles Poholke, was part of the AFL Academy’s preseason tour of America. Picture: AFL MEDIA White and Bailey Rice to walk him through the process. “With all the running and that we were doing... my second week I did most of the training and that was un-

real,” Battle said. “Training with the likes of Armitage and all that, I guess looking up to them as a youngster it was weird running around with him, that’s for sure.

“Was only (Rice and White’s) third training session - so we were all going in there pretty nervous and they went on a leadership camp so I didn’t spend much time with them but it was super.”

Amin strives for the next level of success By JARROD POTTER INSPIRATION to take his football to the next level and pride in his religious heritage are the great insights Musa Amin will take from his time with Bachar Houli. Amin, 18, from Narre Warren South, was one of four footballers to best embody the Bachar Houli Academy’s Wall of Success values. After making a great impact at Houli’s AFL Academy Camp - a sixday program for 35 up-and-coming Muslim footballers held last year - Amin was voted by his peers to receive a Bachar Houli Leadership Medal. The players voted for a person they thought met the academy’s criteria - including trust, voice, ability and pride among other necessary attributes - which Amin felt extremely

privileged to receive. “That was an honour to get it there were about 30 other blokes wanting that medal, but I got it in the end which was great,” Amin said. “I saw a website on the internet with Bachar Houli and his mission to come to his program and see if I could get an opportunity there, and I did. “I did it for the past two years which was really good - I took away a lot off Bachar. “What to do, how to position myself and what to do and how to improve on - and I’m always asking questions as well.” It wasn’t just about footwork and strategy, as the Richmond defender Houli set up the camp to encourage the footballers to engage in leadership roles and learn more about their

couraged by Houli to make the most of his talents. There’s also the question of getting into the VFL, which Amin hopes to answer in 2017 after another year working on his game. “Just talking to him (Houli) whenever I can - he told me to carry on with my running and my weights to get fit for the season,” Amin said. “He’s encouraged me to try for VFL, which wasn’t a good go for me this year, so I’m playing Noble under-19s and can hopefully get a senior gig sometime this year. “Hopefully, play round one that’s my ambition - and I want to try and get into the VFL next year.” Amin wanted to thank Houli, former coach Dean Rice, brother Adam Amin and Rick Millman for their support.

JOSH Battle received his first taste of life as a professional athlete... and is hungry for more. The Berwick 17-year-old has gone at break-neck speed this off season as he looks towards the big leagues. His selection in the AFL Academy first allowed him to play against the Australian Allies on Grand Final day at the MCG before he was whisked away to join St Kilda’s training group for nearly three weeks of intense preseason training. Handpicked as one of a handful of top AFL draft prospects to head over to the elite IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, Battle got put through the ringer to see where his skills and athleticism stacked up. While he went through the hard yards during this pre-season period, Battle thinks he’s all the better for the experience and is ready for another big crack at the TAC Cup. “Definitely came away from that a little bit fitter and a bit wiser,” Battle said. “I’ve learned a lot about me as a person over there and just what it takes to live as a professional athlete in that environment. “Sando (Brenton Sanderson) said in one of his meetings ‘you’ll realise how bad you do want it or you don’t want it’ after club week and America. “It’s definitely something that I want.” It felt a bit strange for Battle to run alongside men he’d looked up to for years such as David Armitage and Nick Riewoldt... but he had a couple of familiar Dandenong faces in Brandon

His time in Florida taught him how to stay at the professional level for longer and to keep pushing himself to the next level. “Flew off for the states and that was a pretty surreal experience in America,” Battle said. “I guess what it takes to be a professional athlete, because being in that environment, surrounded by all these terrific athletes, just implementing that and living like one of them, which was good.” He returned to the Stingrays’ training track this week and his hopes for the season have been set high - but that’s what it will take to get a ticket into the AFL. Battle will have to balance schoolwork with playing commitments for Haileybury College, Dandenong Stingrays and likely Vic Country in a frenetic year for the 190cm utility. After a strong start to 2016, Battle wants to keep the good news flowing as he aims to move into the midfield and add another string to his bow making him that much more enticing as a draft prospect. “Just want a good strong pre-season, finish that off well and, hopefully, have a consistent year at the Stingrays and we’ll hopefully be up there again,” Battle said. “Definitely this year I’d like to get into the midfield as I think my endurance is probably one of my strengths, so if I can take that into the midfield that would be really good. “Been doing a bit of stoppage work at the Stingrays on the first night back.” Battle’s Stingrays had their first pre-season skirmish on Sunday morning in an intra-club match at Frankston.
