Back to burglary By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS BARELY two months after release from prison, a man has been charged with burgling Casey Grammar School and a home, breaking into a car and trying to break into another home in Cranbourne early on 7 February. During a bail hearing the following day, John Hockhing, 29, denied the home-related offences - aggravated by the residents being home in each case. According to a police summary handed into Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, Hockhing had been released from jail on 23 December 2015 after serving the full term of a two-and-a-half-year jail sentence. His “extensive” criminal history included armed robbery, aggravated burglary, recklessly causing injury, handling stolen goods, possessing ice, possessing a dangerous article and failing to answer bail. During his hearing, he stared at arresting police officer Detective Senior Constable Nicole Spinks of Casey CIU. From the dock, he asked her: “You f ... ing smirking at me?” Police allege Hockhing admitted to stealing a laptop computer and mobile phones from Casey Grammar School’s main office in Cranbourne East about 6am on 7 February. The accused had allegedly entered the school through possibly unlocked front doors, and was chased by a security guard about 6.45am. His girlfriend’s car keys were found on the school grounds; the girlfriend said that Hockhing had borrowed the car overnight, which he had fitted with an allegedly stolen rear number plate. Sometime that morning, he was accused of rifling through living-room cupboards and kitchen containers, and stealing a canvas bag and personal documents from a home in Childers Street. He was also accused of unsuccessfully trying to break-in through a bedroom window of a home in Sladen Street. About 8.30am, a “sweating and agitated” Hockhing allegedly broke into a Toyota Yaris parked on the front lawn of a residence in Cameron Street, about 700 metres from the grammar school. Pedestrian punched after crossing near-miss

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

A MAN was rushed to Dandenong Hospital after being punched during an altercation with a driver after he was almost struck by a car at a Fountain Gate pedestrian crossing. The 20-year-old male from Beaconsfield sustained serious injuries to his face following a verbal exchange with the reckless driver. The close call occurred at the southern end of the Westfield Fountain Gate car park, near Overland Drive, on Saturday 6 February, about 11.45am. A group of four pedestrians had to push off the light coloured SUV to avoid being hit at speed. The car stopped nearby and two males and female with long, straight blonde hair got out of the vehicle. The victim was left having to undergo surgery to his face. No one else was injured in the incident. The male who struck the victim is described as in being in his early thirties, six foot tall, about 110 kilos, with short brown hair and stubble and of Caucasian appearance. He was wearing a dark brown T-shirt and dark coloured shorts at the time. Police were given partial registration of the car involved, 1SE, and urge anyone who witnessed the incident to call Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111.

CASEY’S police chief has hit out at residents who are willing to let the area’s Neighbourhood Watch (NW) die as crime grows at one of the highest rates in the state. Inspector Paul Breen said that it was a crucial “institution we can’t let die”. “As local commander I’m sick to death of hearing people say what are we doing about the high crime rate, ice, hoons, so I say what the bloody hell are you doing?” “We’re in it together,” Insp Breen said. “We absolutely can’t let NW fold, it’s a real institution across Victoria, it’s a great initiative and, above all else, it keeps people aware - it’s about looking after each other’s back.” Insp Breen said the only reason NW will fall over in Casey is because of a lack of community interest and engagement. “Don’t tell me out of the 29 suburbs in Casey we can’t find someone from each suburb to become NW champions,” he said. “In an area with such a high crime rate and family violence and hooning and drug use, it’s about time we committed to NW, stepped up and fully supported crime prevention.” Insp Breen said Casey police are looking for NW local champions to continue the crime preventative work. “Above all else, it’s people being proactive and aware, looking out for their neighbours’ property and actually

having each other’s backs.” Currently NW groups operate in 57 out of the 79 municipalities in Victoria and by March that number may be forced to drop. Casey NW secretary of 15 years Jennifer Baird and treasurer of 35 years 67-year-old Ken Bailey have said they are past their use-by dates. “I need a break from treasury roles, I’m still going to stay on the committee, just give up my position as treasure,” Mr Bailey said. “I’m very worried it will have to fold - membership numbers has always been a concern.” Ms Baird, who has to give up her role due to her health, said members will assess if the community service “will have to call it quits” after their March meeting. “I’m more concerned because I don’t think the young ones really understand the need for it,” she said. A sad Ms Baird said installing a NW sign in Lyndhurst will be the group’s last job if they’re forced to close. “The signs have had positive outcomes for estates and I think crime will increase without NW,” she said. “Our signs deter people and I had feedback from Marriott Waters’ residents saying after the sign was installed the crime rate significantly dropped.” Casey NW currently has 2000 home crime prevention packs which are due to be distributed. To get involved in Casey NW phone Jennifer Baird on 9799 3326.

Ken Bailey, Casey Inspector Paul Breen and Jennifer Baird are crossing their fingers that people will come forward and keep NW alive. 149921 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

A POLICE chase involving the dog squad, air wing and highway patrol brought two men to a stop - after they performed burnouts around a police car in Lyndhurst, before being arrested in Frankston. The young Carrum Downs men aged 23 and 25 years old were driving a stolen Statesman sedan, when police noticed the careless and brazen act off the Westernport Highway in Lyndhurst, on Thursday 4 February. Detective Sergeant Stuart Freeman said the pair were doing burnouts around a parked police car. “They were creating a dangerous scenario before they fled,” Det Sgt Freeman said. A search was called for the men, which included a helicopter to help the

Chestfield Court, Frankston, after they smashed into a fence trying to get away. “They decamped the crashed car and the canine unit tracked them down, they were arrested and charged,” Det Sgt Freeman said. The chase ended at 7.20pm and it’s believed the car was stolen from Bittern. An onlooker told Star News that police had put down spike strips on the road near the court. “The car tried to do a U-turn and got wedged between a tree and a small brick wall,” they said. “Police inspected the car and bagged up items.” “One man gave himself up over the fence.” Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

In caring hands By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CATHY Wieckmann provides a fun and happy sanctuary for children at their toughest of times. A husband and wife team, Eric and Cathy have been doing what they love for the past 17 years, and after this year’s Australia Day, both have Casey’s highest of honours. Cathy was awarded City of Casey Citizen of the Year on Australia Day for her work behind the scenes at CHIPS, Christians Helping In Primary Schools. Cathy calls herself the background figure to her husband’s public approach to their not-for-profit organisation. “Eric was awarded in 2005,” she said. “I was very shocked to receive one, too, I’m happy to be in the backgroundthey said I was the brains behind it, but I wouldn’t t go that far.” The organisation has been taking children who have or are in the midst of highly traumatic experiences on a camp to Phillip Island, where they each have their own buddy who volunteers their time. “Our aim isn’t to fix children we just want parents, carers and children to re-

alise that they are of intrinsic value and whatever the gifting and capabilities of that child is, we want to encourage it,” Cathy said. “We believe that healing from trauma and grief can come from spending time with groups and in a community environment.” The CHIPS Chaplaincy program is now in 17 schools across Casey, Cardinia and Knox and liaises with 14 chaplains along with their beloved camps, which has a waiting list. “We take everyone no matter their needs and we have a registered nurse on all our camps, parents are also welcome to come and the effects are far reaching,” Cathy said. “One story that stands out to me is when a mum brought her children to one of our camps a couple of years ago after their dad died and they were in shock and grief. “Years later she wrote to us to say how well they are going now and that she felt the ‘life gets better camp’ was a turning point in their healing.” Extremely humbled by Casey’s recognition of her inspiring organisation, Cathy put the award down to her volunteers who make their work possible.

Accused faces court for burglary Hockhing told the court he showed cause for bail by having family support, including a place “up in the bush away from all the drugs and stuff”. He also had links with an employment agency and a possible drug rehab placement. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen refused bail because of the accused’s “too serious” prior history and recent release from prison.

Call for fines amnesty By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE Casey North Community Information and Support Service (CNCISS) has called on Attorney General MP Martin Pakula for a six-month, state-wide amnesty on administration fees attached to unpaid traffic fines due to Casey’s high amount of outstanding penalties. Executive officer at Casey North CISS Susan Magee wrote to Mr Pakula this week urging him to review the “complicated and inflexible payment system and take action against the reoccurring and costly fees which push families to the brink. “People aren’t paying fines when they get them because they can’t afford to, Ms Magee said. “We have Casey residents come in carrying shopping bags full of unopened fines and it’s affecting all aspects of their lives. Advocating on behalf of Casey residents, Ms Magee said she wanted to take a stand due to Casey’s high debt average, in particular for toll fines. She said Casey residents’ debt was one of the highest in the state. In the letter, Ms Magee wrote: “Almost 30,000 Casey residents presently owe $102 million in road fines, which amounts to “more than 10 per cent of the Casey population. Ms Magee said the debt in Casey is increasing and that client are dealing with fines amounting

Casey North CISS finance counsellor Lisa Hansen said that 80 per cent of clients are dealing with accumulated traffic fines. “Almost everyone we see has some form of accumulated road fines which keep jumping up with admin fees, which are a killer, Ms Hansen said.

Ms Magee noted in her letter that Casey is more susceptible to racking up toll and other similar fines due its high workforce age and location. “Seventy per cent of the Casey workforce drive to work and this makes them particularly vulnerable to tolls, Ms Magee wrote. “A lag in infrastructure has resulted in this car dependency that further impacts on high costs of living... and financial stress. Ms Hansen said she’s seen cases where Casey residents have delayed paying toll and road fines and are banned from re-registering their car but take the risk and continue to drive. “They still have to get to work and if they have an accident their insurance won’t pay because they were driving unregistered, Ms Hansen said. Ms Magee said one young Casey woman will have paid what would amount to a house deposit in accumulated fines and administration fees. In the coming weeks Ms Magee will meet with Narre Warren MP and Roads Minister Luke Donnellan to discuss the statewide problem. “We acknowledge that toll fees and other fines should be paid, Ms Magee said. “But we seek greater empathy by the government of the significant effect these debts and the system has on households. Such amnesties have been placed across Australia in the past 10 years and Ms Magee is advocating for a pardon in administration fees from three to six months.

Party member, said the community preferred rail-under-road grade separations at Corrigan, Heatherton and Chandler roads, and didn’t feel properly consulted prior to the project’s announcement. “So far the reaction has been dreadful. Nobody I’ve spoken to has been positive, Cr Blades said. “Handing out cards at Noble Park shopping centre early in the morning doesn’t do it.

As part of the $1.6 billion project, a 2.7 kilometre elevated viaduct will be built over the Noble Park intersections creating public open space beneath the line and less rail noise at street level. Noble Park station will be rebuilt, shifted closer to Heatherton Road and be integrated into Douglas Street shops. It will be more accessible for visitors to the nearby RSL, skate park and aquatic centre.

To further decongest traffic, a new road linking Ian Street and Leonard Avenue will cross the tracks. The government says the project will create more than 2000 jobs and be complete in 2018. Critics have branded the sky rail an eyesore that will allow train passengers to peer into neighbouring backyards.

KEVIN Bradford, our previous hard working councillor at Casey, proposed the mono rail some years ago and many laughed at him and thought he may need help. Well here we are with the Andrews Government years later now taking up Kevin’s plan which will eliminate so many rail crossings on the Cranbourne/ Pakenham line. One is entitled to ask – Where Is Jude? The other great push Kevin had was for our Cranbourne Bypass. I am now thinking and hoping that at last the current government may also adopt Kevin’s foresight and give VicRoads a get off your buttocks and do something here also. Geoff Cousins, Cranbourne.

Price of indiscretion “FOOLS rush in where angels fear to tread.” Alexander Pope. The above quote simply means that ‘People without good sense or judgement will have no hesitation in tackling a situation that even the wisest would avoid’. Last year Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, offered to take 800,000 migrants into Germany. Today, most political observers and analysts around the world, including members of Merkel’s own political party, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany, agree to say that their strong leader has made a colossal historic mistake. Angela Merkel’s popularity has plummeted very low after the mass rape of girls and women in Cologne on New Year’s Eve. Likewise, French President Francois Hollande has been doing his ‘mea culpa’ following the unwarranted and unjustified terrorist attack in Paris on 13 November 2015. In light of the above, every sensible Australian citizen would feel terribly shocked by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews’s decision to allow 267 asylum seekers, including 37 children to settle in Victoria. Such a decision is “wrong” and “needless” because it goes against the Australian Federal Government policy on immigration; a policy that has been praised by many European leaders so far. Does the Premier of Victoria pretend that he has more compassion for asylum seekers (mostly economic migrants) than the Premier of New South Wales? Can he pretend that his State Government is endowed with a greater feeling of human kindness that the Federal Government? What does the Premier think about the lucrative business of unscrupulous people smugglers? What is more alarming, however, is the fact that the Andrews Government not only challenges the Federal Government offshore immigration detention policy but also defies a ruling by the High Court on that issue. I, for one, believe that our High Court judges deserve a little more respect from the Victorian State Government. It’s a wrong message that the Premier is sending to the rest of the community, most particularly to our young people. Instead, let’s all say together: “Long live the High Court, the highest court in the Australian judicial system! Long Live Australia!” Eliezer Francois, Endeavour Hills.

Entrenched graffiti SAM AZIZ is talking rubbish (Graffiti Sheeted Home, News, 4 February), which part of Casey did he walk round? More than likely Berwick the posh part of Casey. Here in Hampton Park I can show him graffiti that’s been here not days or months but years and nobody wants to know about it. D. Gardiner, Hampton Park.

Rates cap: easy way out THE question is will Casey council have a financial crisis due to any rates cap or are we really seeing a management problem? According to Lachlan Moorhead’s report (Council Bids To Break Cap, Journal News, 8 February) Casey Mayor Sam Aziz, claims Casey “council was acting in the best interests of ratepayers” by seeking to apply for a rates variation above 2.5 per cent from the Essential Services Commission. Cr Aziz has also publicly claimed that Casey will be faced with a multi-million dollar financial deficit due to rates capping in future. Cr Aziz has not informed residents and ratepayers that Casey council also has the capacity to compensate for any shortfall in revenue from substantial productivity offsets by varying its own often controversial spending patterns. Council decided to spend $125 million on the Bunjil Place project. This project cannot in anyway be described as an essential community service especially in view of the fact that council is aware that future new sub-divisions will need more family and children’s centres and recreational facilities. Casey council also voted to support an overseas trip to China for up to six Casey councillors and staff. Casey has also used

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS ratepayers’ finances to promote the EastWest Link and the promotion of Bunjil Place. Only 21 councils have registered an intention to apply for a rates cap variation. This means that most councils have found ways to achieve productivity gains and match the expectations of their local communities. If Casey has financial problems they may really need to look at their CEO Mike Tyler whom they keep reappointing without advertising his job, even though many community residents no longer have confidence in his leadership. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Lame ducks I WRITE regarding the boarding houses to be built in Brookland Greens (We Won’t Share, News, 28 January). I find it quite a laugh how Casey councillor Geoff Ablett has got on board to oppose this being built. At the meeting at the Cranbourne Turf Club we had the top managers from Casey council telling us their hands were tied, so what does that tell me? Council is supporting the residents knowing full well they cannot make a decision to have this development stopped, making the council look good and Geoff Ablett look good for the next state election. Liberal MP David Davis was also there supporting the Brookland Greens residents. Remember, he was in government before Labor and they did nothing to change this loophole. Casey council, knowing they can’t do anything, makes them look like lame ducks. Where was this council for the residents when we had the methane gas issue? Were their hands tied then as well? UFO fever has landed in Narre Warren. THE Star News reporter who has helped reopen the X-Files investigation into the famous Narre Warren UFO abduction has visited the scene of the incident.

The story of Kelly Cahill’s alien abduction in a Narre Warren paddock had gone quiet for the past 20 years but was highlighted in the new series of the paranormal X-Files TV show. In the show Agent Mulder quizzes another character about the depth of his UFO-hunting credentials and in particular the Cahill case. Our reporter was keen to learn more about the incident and accompanied two UFO investigators to the scene of the alleged 1993 incident along the Belgrave-Hallam Road which included seven-foot tall aliens, a beam of light, and an hour and a half of unaccounted time. He has no intention of being caught out if Agent Mulder ever puts him on the spot. SADLY police last week confirmed a 68-yearold Noble Park man was one of four victims on board the plane bound for Tasmania which tragically crashed into waters off Barwon Heads.

A 55-year-old Mordialloc man, 63-year-old Black Rock woman and a 65-year-old Black Rock man were also on board the ill-fated plane which took off from Moorabbin Airport. The aircraft crashed about two kilometres off Collendina Beach between Barwon Heads and Point Lonsdale, and water police have been scouring the ocean floor since the crash. A fisherman who was out on the water at the time witnessed the accident and contacted police. SIXTIETH wedding anniversaries don’t come around every day. This week a loving Berwick couple will celebrate the special milestone together along with their family. A Star News journalist went out to speak to the elderly couple who were pleased as punch to share their love story - which began at the Dandenong dance a long time ago. But it was still fresh in their minds.

All ears on UFOs By LACHLAN MOORHEAD FOX Mulder has given the Victorian UFO Action (VUFOA) group a lot of work in the last week. Ever since the fictional X-Files detective mentioned the Kelly Cahill case - one of the most important UFO cases in the world - on the TV Show reboot recently, the infamous 1993 alleged UFO sighting in Narre Warren has shot back into the public eye. Now, more than 20 years later, two leading VUFOA investigators - founder Andrew Arnold and Ben Hurle - are hoping the XFiles mention will see the witnesses from the case come forward again. “This is a good opportunity to perhaps draw some of the witnesses out,” Mr Hurle said. “Now it’s the 21st century, it might be really nice time to re-visit it again with 21st century investigators and we can look at it again from a new perspective.” The big problem is they have no names, only pseudonym names. “We have snippets of information and because the case is in the top five in the world, it really does need the attention brought back to it,” Mr Hurle said. “Not to bring these people out to parade them in front of the public ... but perhaps for their own benefit as a part of the process.” Kelly claimed that in August 1993 she was abducted by aliens while driving home with her husband along Belgrave-Hallam Road. Ms Cahill, who was 27 at the time, told Today Tonight in the 1990s that she spotted what looked like an airship the size of a swimming pool with a ring of orange lights in the Narre Warren paddock. Extra-terrestrial beings are said to prefer areas near open bodies of water, like Lysterfield Lake, and power lines. Kelly Cahill later recalled getting out of the car and then being abducted by skinny black figures with bulging red eyes after

Council leads push for more Challenge program funding and support people in this area, it was a unified approach we had to addressing issues in the three municipalities. “Without the funding, families are left unsupported and more vulnerable.” Family Violence Minister Fiona Richardson said the government was directing an $81.3 million package to ensure “those impacted by harm are supported.” “The Andrews Labor Government is fixing Victoria’s broken system and doing more to keep those who suffer from family violence safe,” she said. “With the Royal Commission into Family Violence well underway, we are directing our $81.3 million package to ensure those impacted by this harm are supported. “The royal commission will consider the importance of preventative responses in its recommendations that are to be delivered on 29 March.“ Shadow Minister for Police Edward O’Donohue has criticised the government’s decision to scrap the funding, saying there was “no excuse” to halt the funding at this time. Ben and Andrew keep watch on the skies. 149900 they approached her. At the time she said she saw two other cars also stop to investigate the alleged UFO, and these two sets of separate witnesses - key to why the case is infamous - later corroborated Ms Cahill’s story with investigators. But the memory of this confrontation only came later. In the early days after the incident, Kelly and her husband, and presumably the other witnesses, couldn’t account for about an hour and a half of time. “The beings came charging across the paddock, they (the witnesses) lose their sight, they can’t see - so they’re blinded,” Mr Hurle said “So they’ve effectively been hobbled, stunned if you like. Stunned by the creatures and when they wake up they’re in the car, travelling back, they’re driving. “And I can only make the assumption it was the same for the other people.” Now the investigators at VUFOA are back on the case, not that they ever left.

And unlike Fox Mulder, these investigators are real, and they’re calling on the witnesses to come forward again. “There’s nothing like getting it from the horse’s mouth,” Mr Arnold said. “We want to do our own independent investigation into it, hopefully speak to them directly and just let them see what they say. “They might remember more now than they did at the time.” When people go to the trouble of coming forward and there’s a level of substantial evidence, Mr Hurle said, that’s where people should have an open mind. “The potential has to exist for these things,” he said. To check out a video of investigator Ben Hurle explaining the Kelly Cahill case, from the paddock in question, visit berwicknews. starcommunity.com.au For more information, contact Ben and Andrew on 0456 447 112, or visit www.vufoa.com

CASEY council will call on the State Government to provide interim funding for the Challenge Family Violence program, with the royal commission findings delayed until the end of March. Community providers have been told they must wait for news on funding until the Royal Commission into Family Violence releases its findings, which now won’t be made public until 29 March after the commission was granted a onemonth extension in December. But in a notice of motion carried last week, Cr Amanda Stapledon urged Casey council to write to the Andrews Government, seeking interim funding for the challenge program, which dried up in November. The future of the Challenge Family Violence program which ran for three years and engaged community leaders across Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong - is still up in the air. “What we’re saying is family violence hasn’t stopped. Can we have some funding until such time as the royal commission has made its decision?” Cr Stapledon told Star News. “We’re asking for support in the interim until the findings have been released. “This was a really effective program that helped educate

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH POLICE and Corrections Minister Wade Noonan’s decision to take leave from his ministerial duties to receive counselling has been praised by Cranbourne Senior Sergeant Daniel Baynes. “I think it was really courageous and brave,” Sen Sgt Baynes said of Mr Noonan’s three-month leave of absence. “I wasn’t expecting it and it’s been great to see him supported.” Mr Noonan issued a statement on Monday 8 January saying he would take a leave of absence from his position in the State Government and Parliament, citing the grim nature of his ministerial job. “It has been difficult to cope with the constant exposure to details of unspeakable crimes and traumatic events that are an everyday part of my role and the accumulation of these experienc-

es has taken an unexpected toll,” he said in a statement. “I need time to receive further support and assistance including professional counselling. “This has been a difficult decision but I believe it is the right one.” Sen Sgt Baynes, who has been in the force for 16 years, said the high profile leave might help to break down barriers. “Sometimes there is stigma attached with mental health issues and people involved in emergency services have to deal with the worse things society has to offer. “It shows he’s human, everyone is human and people do react differently to highly traumatic situations. “In some members of the force you can see instances weigh them down while others can move on. “When you are dealing with

the victims of serious crime, sexual assaults and family violence face to face the impact is really profound,” he said. In the statement, Mr Noonan thanked his wife and family for their love and encouragement and Sen Sgt Baynes said that was an important point. “Victoria Police has local peer support programs and if someone has been to a suicide they get contacted by our clinical welfare services. “And our members have the ability to tap into professional help and that’s extended to families of police members as well.” He said that for many police officers the job doesn’t finish at the end of their shift. “We get people who perform very well at work but when they go home they are struggling you never know what people are dealing with behind the scenes,” he said.

SHOPPING for just five minutes has cost one Casey resident their Honda motorbike. The red and white Honda CRF70 was stolen from a shopping centre car park on BaxterTooradin Road in Pearcedale. Police have released a CCTV image of the stolen bike on the rear of a white ute. The ute was also carrying a large round hay bale and what looks like a small trailer from a ride-on mower. The bike was stolen by two unknown males who left the scene in the ute on Thursday 28 January at 7pm. Police have also released a stock image of the Honda CRF70 bike.

College farm set to expand By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S a type of hands-on learning not every Victorian secondary student gets, and it all starts from the ground up. Year 9 and 10 students at Hillcrest Christian College are growing, maintaining and caring for a small farm. Agriculture and horticulture teacher David Lott said the students had built a glowing sweet corn crop, one so good that they had harvested it and frozen it for later. “The students look after lambs, grow vegetables and plants and will soon be caring for some pigs and cattle, too,” Mr Lott said.

And the class has just made way for a new, five-year-old best friend, by the name of Margaret. “Margaret is a Suffolk sheep, she will be a part of the school’s breeding program and will form the nucleus of our sheep stud,” Mr Lott said. In his 11th year teaching at the school, Mr Lott said Margaret will act as a companion for the school’s seven lambs. “It’s great for the students because they can learn about the sheep industry and learn firsthand how to handle, groom and prepare sheep for exhibition at agriculture shows. “Later in the year, our plan is to take the sheep to the Royal

Melbourne Show and also the Bendigo Sheep and Wool Expo,” he said. But with more crops and animals on the way, Mr Lott said the experience was “brilliant” for students. “The real benefits are in terms of the students’ ability to judge and appreciate animals, not just sheep and they can use the same skills they have learnt and apply them to cattle and horses.” “Showing the animals also gives them a chance at public speaking and developing presentation skills and it’s definitely going to help them improve their job prospects.”

But Detective Sergeant Stuart Freeman holds concerns for the vulnerable location on Quarry Road where the fire was started. “Someone who lights small fires can move on to light bigger ones,” he said. The fire was doused without significant damage to the area.

Building thief tapped by off-duty cop AN EAGLE-EYED off-duty police officer spotted a Hampton Park man as he was trying steal building supplies from a construction site in Clyde North. The officer called for back-up and the 31-year-old was arrested while he was dismantling bathroom and shower fittings at 9.05am on Saturday 6 February. Police later searched his home and recovered more than $2000 in stolen goods, all from houses under construction. He was charged with burglary and theft.

The attempted armed robbery occurred on Tuesday 2 February at 2.45pm, and Narre Warren police are appealing for witnesses. One of the offenders was described as 177cm tall, Caucasian with blond hair. Open door on housing By GEORGIA WESTGARTH HAVING battled the events of the 2008 Brookland Greens gas-leak which devastated Cranbourne homeowners, Leanne Petrides from Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS) is familiar with the estate that can’t escape the spotlight. Now making headlines for their active protest against state share housing provisions, which the City of Casey is fighting to amend for the second time, Brookland Greens residents have again ignited a complex planning issue. One that, Cranbourne CISS Executive Officer, Ms Petrides, sees as a discussion worth having. “We see many people who are living in private rentals who can’t afford the rent as well as those struggling to pay their mortgage and we try to help prevent those people from going into rooming houses,” she said. Ms Petrides, who is at the coalface of Casey homelessness every day, said accommodation such as rooming houses was all about “placement”. “I think there’s a lack of affordable housing in Casey and its pushing people towards homelessness, illegal and registered rooming houses,” she said. “In my view, good quality shared houses need an appropriate amount of bathrooms or one in each room and need to be close to public transport, open space and shopping amenities, as you can’t be sure the occupants own cars. “However, Casey services are quite spread out, so often occupants will own cars and these houses need to have enough off street parking.” With 17 years’ experience at CISS, Ms Petrides said the Salvos and Launch Housing rooming house models, were the best she had seen.

Cranbourne CISS, executive officer Leanne Petrides urges anyone in need of support services to drop in for a Picture: GARY SISSONS chat. 149771 “They incorporate support for people with drop in case workers, because it’s not just a housing issue. “For many people, they have drug or alcohol addictions or mental health problems which have brought them into this situation and isolated them from family and community,” she said. At a recent community forum, Brookland Greens residents expressed these concerns to Casey council officers, saying they fear a share house would result in an influx in local crime. But Ms Petrides said no-one can presume that would be the case.

“I don’t know that we can assume that every homeless person is a criminal, many of them are simply disadvantaged and often families that need support to lift themselves up.” However, Ms Petrides said that such houses could be targeted at parents with children, family violence victims and parolees. “Unfortunately as much as we don’t want to admit it, poverty exists in our streets and we need to be looking at options for people who aren’t as fortunate, and that includes housing,” she said. Ms Petrides said the wider community needed to remember that many of

their neighbours might be just one or two pay cheques away from taking up residence in a rooming house. “In Casey, people hang on by the skin of their teeth, it’s a budget treadmill, people only need to get sick or have an accident and lose their job and find themselves on a waiting list for a rooming house,” she said. “I would be surprised if any property in Casey up for rent would be classified as affordable, it’s rare.” Do you know an appropriate location for a rooming/share house in Casey?

Theft bid driver attacked AN ENDEAVOUR Hills driver was assaulted in an attempted carjacking in Doveton during which a woman walked onto the road forcing him to stop and he was chased by four people wielding poles. The incident occurred on Friday 5 February at 9.27pm on Kidds Road, Doveton, during which the 25-year-old victim sustained minor bruising and swelling. After stopping the victim’s car, the woman was greeted by three men. The driver got out of his car and was threatened by the group during which the men, aged in their late teens and early 20s, demanded his keys, wallet and phone. There was a physical altercation during which the man’s keys were stolen. Luckily the victim managed to retrieve his keys from the ground and he was then able to get back inside his car. As he drove off he was chased down the street by the group of four who were waving poles. Detective Sergeant Stuart Freeman said many witnesses had come forward but urged anyone with information to also contact police. “If anyone is put into a situation like this, drive to the nearest police station and don’t exit the vehicle,” he said. The female was described as being in her 30s, small framed and 130cm tall with brown hair and bad skin. She was wearing a dress and was holding a dark handbag.

AS the oldest parent-controlled Christian school in Victoria, Maranatha Christian School has always been a leader in providing high quality Christian education. With its focus on high academic outcomes, genuine student care and opportunity for students to serve by using their God-given skills and talents, Maranatha graduates can be found across Victoria contributing to and building a better society. 2015 was no exception to this. Building on its excellent NAPLAN results, Maranatha students excelled in the 2015 VCE. School valedictorian Paul Michalski achieved a remarkable ATAR of 99.5 while Stephen Capon, the 2015 boys school captain, achieved 98.65. In addition, Jordi Sutato and Sarah Ciortuz finished first in Victoria in their subjects, Indonesian and Romanian respectively. This is a testament to the hard work of both students and staff. Across the board it has been wonderful to see the students fulfil the school’s motto, My Utmost for His Glory, by giving of their best, with more than 80 per cent of all students achieving results which placed them in the top half of the state. Maranatha continues to lead Christian education in a number of innovative ways to help students become the leaders of tomorrow. Its partnership with the Apple store at Fountain Gate to support the school’s iPad program is genuinely unique, while the teaching staff are all currently applying Teaching for Understanding, a teaching methodology designed at Harvard University with its Christian perspective to help children learn to think about the

BERWICK Waters, the signature master-planned community by Frasers Property Australia and Mondous Property Australia, has announced a significant upcoming event. An auction of three dream blocks of land in The Strand precinct – all facing the expanse of established wetlands – is scheduled for Saturday 20 February. The pick of the bunch of these land lots is the development’s first ever quarter-acre block, boasting a water outlook in two directions. The other two blocks are more than 600 square metres and are expected to be top of the list for eager buyers. According to Frasers Property’s development director Jill Lim, who is proud of the evolution of this landmark estate, land lots of this size and in such prized positions are not common, even in new developments. “Berwick Waters is a flagship development that continues to attract tremendous interest. The release of these

blocks is quite special,” she said. “The Strand is an exciting precinct with a stunning vista of water views and lush surrounds perfect for young families or empty nesters looking for living options that suit their interests and needs.” Upon completion, homes at Berwick Waters will be set among 52 hectares of tranquil wetlands with nine kilometres of walking and bike trails, fitness stations and picturesque viewing platforms over the wetlands making for inspirational living. Interested bidders can inspect the blocks on a tour this weekend and prior to the 11am auction, which will be held in a marquee in the Waterfront Park. Preregistration is required to enable bidding on 20 February. Berwick Waters is at 5 Riverstone Boulevard, Clyde North (Melway reference: 131 C8). BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

The centre's innovative check in bar. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Owners of HealthMint Medical Centre in Cranbourne North, Chantelle Brott and Dr Paul Tescher.

Health care gets fresh By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE North is home to a fresh take on healthcare, with traditional medical centre ideals thrown out the window paving way for hot desking, mobile staff and consulting rooms with a difference. The innovative take on preventative health and general practice centres on its custom interiors and consultation rooms which mean less time waiting and no reception desk. HealthMint Medical Centre at The Eve shopping precinct opened in October, even sparking interest from Casey mayor Sam Aziz, who said the technology based systems are ‘turning medi-

cine on its head.’ Since opening its doors the centre has accrued around 250 patients and holds an even stronger online audience through its Facebook page. Owners, Chantelle Brott and Dr Paul Tescher said many of their architectural choices grew out of negative patient experiences. “There are no desks in the consulting rooms and doctors use a tablet and swing table rather than sitting at a desk and turning away from the patient to make notes,” Chantelle said. The duo made the decision to ensure their patients were the centre of the room, enabling the GP to keep eye contact throughout the consultation.

The user friendly approach to the centre starts with the booking process, which can be done online, over the phone or by using the HealthMint app. And patients log themselves in using tablets which have replaced the need for a seated receptionist. “In the future we want to have our reception staff work more like a concierge and have them mobile around the practice, assisting patients and keeping the checking in and out flowing,” Chantelle said. Decorated with high-end contemporary furniture, the waiting room has become a major draw card for the new Casey business.

“We’ve had people walk in and say this is our new practice, before even sitting down with me to discuss their health - that’s how powerful the space is,” Dr Tescher said. The centre includes eight consultation rooms, a pathology room and treatment room and a lot of natural light, something the young entrepreneurs insisted on when buying the premises. Chantelle and Paul are hopeful that the therapeutic space they have created along with their efficient processes encourage people to visit the doctor even when they aren’t sick. “We think health care could and should be better and we want to focus on preventative health strategies,” Chantelle said.

Ms Ransom also co-authored a strategy paper on youth entrepreneurship and unemployment for the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal agenda. Her corporate career has involved working as chief of staff to NAB Wealth chief executive Andrew Hagger and for

Rio Tinto CEO Sam Walsh, leading key organisational strategy and business improvement initiatives and integrated corporate affairs projects. Ms Ransom’s company, Emergent Solutions, has worked with the likes of INPEX, CBH, Conoco Phillips, KPMG, as well government departments around the world. Ms Ransom holds a Law degree and Bachelor of Economics. In 2012, she was the youngest person to be named in Australia’s ‘100 Most Influential Women’, and also became the world’s youngest-ever Rotary president. Her work with Rotary has played a key role in the global efforts to lift youth participation in the organisation, more than doubling engagement in the last five years. An accomplished global keynote speaker, Ms Ransom has presented across six continents, including delivering a Peace Charter to the Dalai Lama and addressing the G20’s Central Bank Governors and Finance Minister. She is also a popular blogger, con-

tributor to a number of leading publications and a regular radio and TV guest. She has featured on ABC’s Q&A, Reuters, Bloomberg Asia, Channel 7 News and Channel 10’s The Project, and is renowned for her commentary on intergenerational economic and social challenges. Ms Ransom will address business leaders from across the region at the Cranbourne Racing Centre on Wednesday 9 March. The breakfast series continues in September with Jayco founder Gery Ryan. Chris Riddell, Australia’s most sought after futurist, will be guest speaker at November breakfast. The June speaker is yet to be confirmed. The breakfasts cost $60 (inc. GST) or $700 for table sponsorship. Casey Cardinia Business Group member discount applies. To book go to trybooking.com or contact Raylene Wilson at the City of Casey on 9705 5200 or email rewilson@ casey.vic.gov.au

CEO of Emergent Solutions Holly Ransom will be guest speaker at the next Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast.

There goes the neighbourhood By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT’S a neighbourhood complaint to rival all others. Wishing to remain anonymous, this Cranbourne West man deals with hard rubbish dumping, burn-outs, hooning and mini-bike activity every single day. Residing near Breens Road and Monahans Road, he said: “It’s like living in a tip site”. “Monohans Road is the biggest dumping site, its 24/7, we get beds, trees, lounge suites, plaster, building products, you name it we’ve had it,” he said. “You’d swear blind you were living next to Calder Park Raceway, with the hooning and burnouts.” The annoyed resident said most of the dumping occured outside a set of units near Monohans Road, saying the development is constantly up for lease, which added to the kerbside trash. “There’s about 40 units on

the corner, and there’s rarely a week goes by where household rubbish isn’t dumped out the front,” he said. But it’s not only affecting the nature strip. “There are no houses near the switching yard on the north side of Breens Road and Calais Circuit, and people literally back up their car, push stuff off and drive away at night. “The council had a bobcat and truck here last week to clean up the mess.” Mad at the lack of council support for his concerns - which have spanned the past 10 years - this tired resident is calling for speed humps to be built on Breens Road. “We get mini-bikes five nights a week, from 5pm to 5.30pm and some are highpowered bikes, they do a few reps before leaving which doesn’t give police enough time to get here and catch them,” he said. “They don’t wear helmets,

we need police on motorbikes patrolling the area, that’s the only way to catch them,” he said. “Hoons are here most nights, you’ll hear screeching brakes at all hours, there are always fresh skid marks, but nothing seems to get done. “They hoon around the corner of Calais Circuit and light it up down Monohans Road.” Talking on behalf of other neighbours, he said one home on the corner of Calais Circuit is regularly up for sale. “You can’t sleep, people just can’t live there,” he said. Local residents have put a stop to eight hoons, after tracking down their home addresses, but the irritated resident said “it’s only a matter of time before someone gets killed”. Anyone with any information regarding hoon activity in Casey is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

POLICE have put the brakes on people involved in illegal hoon meets after three days of raids in Melbourne’s south-east and north on 3, 4 and 5 February. A total of 26 people were arrested and 17 cars seized during the raids, including in Dandenong, Cranbourne and Narre Warren. Among those charged were a 20-year-old Dandenong man, a 23-year-old Noble Park man, an 18-year-old Cranbourne man, and 18-year-old Cranbourne East man, a 23-year-old Clyde North man, a 22-yearold Hampton Park man, a 20-year-old Narre Warren man, a 24-year-old Narre Warren South man and a 39-year-old Narre Warren man. Eighteen cars were also seized. Inspector Brian Sharp, who headed Greater Dandenong police’s involvement in the raids, said investigations were still ongoing into the so-called South East Skids meets. “We’re not finished yet,” he said - with the investigation to include organisers and spectators. Inspector Bruce Kitchen of Greater Dandenong police said the arrests should have a “dramatic effect” on the rising number of hoon meets.

“Hopefully other potential hoons will take heed of the message.” Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said most of those arrested were aged between 18 and 25 and did not have a criminal history. Others were involved in Northern Skids meets in Melbourne’s north. Mr Hill said the two groups would hold joint meetings, lining up like a drag meeting and performing burnouts in front of hundreds of spectators in industrial estates. The cars would then leave “in the same erratic way” he said. Mr Hill told of two police officers being “beset” by crowds at a recent meet of 200 cars and 500 people in Melbourne’s south. The crowds “en masse” and with “no regard for authority” threw rocks at police, he said. “Their attitude changed markedly since they were arrested today.” He said social media had been an “invaluable investigatory tool” for police who had been surveying the hoons since Operation Regarder was set up in November. “They brag about their behaviour online and our message to them is we see you, we’ll find you, we’ll charge you and

seize your car. “Their arrogance, their poor attitude, their lack of concern for themselves and others, their brazenness has brought themselves undone.” Those arrested face charges of conduct endangering life, conduct endangering serious injury, dangerous driving, careless driving, improper control of a vehicle and emitting excessive smoke and noise from a vehicle. They face potential jail terms of up to 10 years, loss of licence and having their vehicles crushed or sold off by the state. Many will be bailed, subject to a night curfew and banned from attending hoon meets. Mr Hill warned that more arrests could follow and that event organisers who did not drive at the meets were not immune from charges. “These irresponsible people, including the event organisers and drivers, place their lives and the lives of others at risk,” he said. “We’ve recently seen the tragic consequences of hoon driving where two lives were lost but, unfortunately, the reckless driving behaviour continues to plague our suburbs.” All those arrested were bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court in May.

Season over for Giles By DAVID NAGEL KOOWEERUP Cricket Club has started its push for a historic third successive title without its dual-premiership captain-coach Michael Giles after the player and club parted ways last Wednesday. A late-night incident involving Giles and club-mate Clint Fulton, on Saturday 30 January, has resulted in both players taking no further part in the 2015/16 West Gippsland Cricket Association season. The public incident left the club with little choice but to ask Giles to stand down. He missed the first day of Saturday’s clash against Merinda Park, with wicket-keeper batsman Chris Bright taking over the captaincy for the last two rounds of the season and a possible finals campaign. The club’s decision is a brave and strong move that could have serious repercussions as the Demons look to emulate their powerhouse side of the mid-'70s that won a three-peat of titles from 1972 to 1975. The club released this statement. “Due to an incident that compromised club standards, Chris Bright will assume the coaching role for the remainder of the season. It’s been a difficult time for all involved, some tough decisions have been made, but the club’s focus is now on a challenging month of cricket and qualifying all of our teams for finals.” The Demons currently sit fourth in Premier Division, second in B Grade and their thirds sit on top of the E Grade ladder. Giles, the premiership captaincoach of the last two seasons, is a fourtime premiership player at the club and has a perfect leadership record since taking over the coaching role from Shane Dole at the end of the 2012/13 season.

Dual-premiership player-coach Michael Giles will be missing from Kooweerup’s tilt at a third consecutive WGCA Premier Division title. 117254 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS And what a player he has been. In this his ninth season at the club, the explosive left-hander has scored an impressive 4108 runs at an average of 38.39 and - at his best - can rip a game apart like no other. He has cracked 10 centuries and 21 half-centuries for the Demons and alongside Chris O’Hara has formed the most imposing opening partnership of recent times, with eight century stands to their name. But Giles is much more than that

to the Demons, hugely popular and an integral part of the club’s fabric, he has worked hard not just with his senior outfit, but with the lower grades to help them gain success. It’s understood the door is open for him to continue with the Demons next season. Fulton was in his second season with the Demons after five at Catani and two most recently at Lang Lang.

Triathlete Maxwell turns pro By JARROD POTTER

Levi Maxwell has started his professional career strongly with a seventh place finish in Geelong. Picture: FINISHER PIX

IT WAS not a decision Levi Maxwell took lightly, but after a few years in age group triathlons and Ironman races, he was ready to tick another achievement off his list - turning pro. Maxwell, 26, from Cranbourne, decided to join the top echelon of triathletes and Ironmen by making the leap from the elite standard into the professional category. After back to back age-group victories at the world-famous KONA Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, Maxwell thought he was ready for transition into the professional world and his first taste at the next level was on Sunday’s Geelong 70.3 half-Ironman. He just missed the four-hour mark, stopping the clock in seventh place at 4.01.01 hours, but Maxwell was thrilled to get the inaugural pro race under the belt and start 2016 strongly. “I think it’s a relief,” Maxwell said. “Even though it’s just another triathlon, it’s nerve-racking to know you’ve

turned up to go against the big boys and there’s a little bit of expectation to do well - especially being a two-time world age group champ. “The swim played an important role and I showed some improvement in that, and that was probably the main goal for the day, to be in striking distance on the swim and show some improvements on my times. “It’s a fantastic venue and was a fantastically run race was nice having heaps of familiar faces from Cranbourne and Geelong there so it was something special - even though I wasn’t 100 per cent fit - it was special to have my first pro-race with a home crowd.” He weighed up the important decision to turn pro for the last few summers, but after the successes at KONA and recently in Cairns, Maxwell thought he was ready to become Australia’s next professional triathlete. “Probably since the end of 2012, when I did Busso (Busselton) it’s sort of always been a goal,” Maxwell said.

“I didn’t want to get my pro ticket unless I thought potentially I could make an income and become a professional. “I’d like to say I’ve gone through the stages and crossed off everything you can do as an amateur, and if I was going to do it, the time was now. “Anyone who is thinking about going pro, you’ve just got to achieve everything you can as an amateur and don’t rush into going professional.” The next long-course race is Warrnambool Sufferfest in March, and Maxwell will use it as a springboard to his major goal of the national championships. “The main focus - that I’ve said since the start of the year - is Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie,” Maxwell said. “That’s a full distance Ironman the one on the weekend was a half - I’d like to think I’m more specialised in the full distance - I guess I’ll find out, but I’m looking forward to that one.” Maxwell’s Port Macquarie challenge is set for 1 May.

High flying Eagles land again By JARROD POTTER

Swans restore their lost pride By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 15 (Day 2) THE all-round efforts of CaseySouth Melbourne (249) finally paid off as the Swans celebrated the upset of the season defeating finals-bound Northcote (220). Setting a monster tally for Northcote to hunt down - minus its Bushrangers’ all-rounder Marcus Stoinis who returned to the state line-up - Casey-South Melbourne managed to hold on in the dying overs to arguably clinch its best victory in years. Nathan Lambden (1/50) fired up straight away to send Northcote’s Zimbabwean international Solomon Mire (12) back to the sheds, while the other opener Lindsay Hassett (60) bunkered down to try and see off the worst of the Casey barrage. Brendan Rose (4/32) also started peeling off Dragons as the right-arm seamer found the edge of Sam Harbinson (21) and the skipper Steven Taylor (31). Outside of Hassett, Northcote’s failure to carry on after a solid start proved its downfall as 20s and 30s made it difficult to chase down 250. The middle order dug in as the runs started drying up through Casey skipper Lachlan Sperling’s clever use of spin. He didn’t give himself a trundle though, as Sperling went to James Seymour (1/48). Pushing his credentials as an all-rounder, instead of just an opener, Seymour held up an end as Hassett eventually holed out

looking to up the ante. The last few wickets doggedly stuck to the crease as Jack Lalor (21) and Grant Waldron (9no) tried to keep the run-rate tickling along. In the end, one last spell with the new ball sealed the deal as Rose and Lee Diston (2/31) - who replaced Lambden after the spearhead cramped up - slayed the Dragons and gave the Swans a morale-boosting victory. “Since I’ve been there, it’s been one of the better wins,” Sperling said. “Just with the team effort and everyone contributed throughout both innings. “Was a pretty tight game actually - we bowled 80 odd overs and just stuck to our guns, executed pretty well and didn’t give them too much to hit - that was probably the most pleasing thing that the bowlers put it in the right areas all day.” Sperling praised Rose and Seymour as the tandem managed to work the Dragons out of the clash wicket by wicket. “He (Seymour) was superb at one end and pretty much bowled through the second session and put pressure on the batsmen,” Sperling said. “As well with Brendan Rose - they were the stand outs for the day and Rosey was brilliant and charged in from ball one and got the rewards in the end.” Moving up to 16th on the ladder from its big win, Casey will face Essendon this round and Sperling was pleased to see the side’s constant improvement reap results. “We fought pretty hard and

was great to beat a quality side like them (Northcote),” Sperling said. “We’re very happy with our efforts and gives us that belief that we’re not far off - if we keep chipping away we know we can match it with sides in the top half.” Narrow Casey success was sadly mirrored for Dandenong as its Premier Cricket race is just about run and done for 2015/’16. Dandenong’s (157 and 1/54) hopes of making the Men’s competition final eight took a huge blow on Saturday with its narrow first-innings loss to Melbourne Uni (224) At 8/128, the match remained in the balance as Dandenong’s spearheads Justin Butterfield (3/43) and Adam McMaster (2/61) seared through the top order. With Peter Cassidy (4/36) and Tanner Stanton working through the tail, the Panthers hopes were sadly dashed. It took a miraculous partnership from the scholars’ tailenders to avert crisis. The ninth-wicket stand between Steven Reid (66) and Elias Karageorgiou (35) turned the game on its head, leaving Dandenong close but not close enough. Brenton Murphy (25no) and Cameron Forsyth (22no) saw out the overs on a tough day at the office in Dandenong’s second innings. Sitting 10 points outside the eight, with two rounds to go, it will take a lot of outright success and results falling its way to sneak into Premier finals, starting Saturday as Dandenong hosts Fitzroy-Doncaster.

Cranbourne paceman Martin Kelly terrorised Buckley Ridges in an emphatic triumph at Casey Fields. 149892 Picture: JARROD POTTER dry. Leigh Booth (36) was a lone Hallam hold out, but even his efforts soon fell apart. His wicket proved the catalyst for demise as the Hawks slumped after that. Peter Atkinson (3/39) finished the job as he and Weir burdened the workload to rattle off 50 overs between them. NORTH DANDENONG v BERWICK Middle order mastery from Berwick (8/165) and some nuanced bowling was more than enough to blow away North Dandenong (63). Ryan Crawford (51) gritted his teeth and held on through the middle overs alongside Josh Holden (36) and Jack Williams (25). The trio set a par-target for the Northerners, but it would be far too much for them to chase. Matt Crosby (3/14) and Williams (3/11) had a spinner’s field day running through the hosts, taking only 30 overs to complete the rout and bolster its finals credentials heading into the final rounds.

DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 9 (Day 2) THE colours were on show Saturday as Springvale South flexed its muscles again to build a handy buffer atop the DDCA Turf 1 ladder. CRANBOURNE v BUCKLEY RIDGES Buckley Ridges (88) had its finals hopes quashed by Cranbourne (5/89) after a woeful collapse at Casey Fields. The Ridges recognised bats were held to ransom by Eagles devastators Matt Chasemore (4/6) and Steve Spoljaric (3/25). The visitors’ top four barely registered a peep, falling to 4/10 in the opening few overs. It left the heavy lifting to Paul Rudd (27) and the skipper Dan Watson (16), but even they fell after the defences were ripped to shreds. Ben Ingham (2/13) - making his Turf 1 debut - skittled Rudd and Lukas Hoogenboom (9) to start his top grade career in style. The chase had similar hiccups especially against Hoogenboom (3/13), but in the end Spoljaric (27no) and Chasemore (29) did the damage once again to take Cranbourne to its fifth win in a row. DANDENONG WEST v HALLAM KALORA PARK In the only white-clothed Turf 1 clash, Dandenong West’s (167) efforts last week proved enough to vanquish Hallam Kalora Park and effectively kill off the Hawks finals hopes. Led by Shaun Weir (5/36), the Bulls put in their best performance of the season to roll all and sun-

NARRE WARREN v LYNDALE Narre Warren (5/273) bounced away from the bottom with a sensational 111-run victory over Lyndale (162). The Magpies’ charge was left by Janaka Liyanabadalge (138), who helped rescue his side after two early wickets. With support from Wendell Perumal (40) and the skipper Kaushalya Weeraratne (43), Narre Warren set an impressive stage with the blade and finished it with the ball as Perumal (3/18) and Steve Woodward (2/23) cleaned up the Dales with seven overs to spare. The win also ensures the Magpies can’t be relegated in their first season back up to Turf 1 - making for plenty of celebrations at Sweeney Reserve. TURF 3 Beaconsfield (8/346) did not bother with outright results on Saturday as the Tigers tore through Hallam Kalora Park (122) and took the time in the middle. It started with a sublime partnership from Matt Golding (100) and Brendan Johnson (80) - adding 115 to the cause before Johnson was trapped in front nearing his second DDCA ton. Instead the century-making duties fell to Golding who batted strongly throughout the afternoon - well supported by the middle order and tail - to notch his first DDCA hundred. The Tigers batted through the day to give the side a tune up heading into finals. Beaconsfield hosts Doveton in a first versus worst clash on Saturday.

Demons stay focused By DAVID NAGEL UNEXPECTED intensity engulfed the West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier Division on Saturday as Kooweerup turned the calm before the storm into a very special day for the club. Round 13 was expected to be smooth sailing - with teams jostling for position - before heavy seas arrived and the Demons and Tooradin settled down for a fight for their cricketing lives in round 14. But that all changed during the middle of last week, the Demons standing down their dual-premiership captain-coach Michael Giles after a late-night incident away from the club. The decision was tough, but it bonded the players to the point where they were an unstoppable force against Merinda Park at Donnelly Reserve on Saturday. And not surprisingly it was a heart-and-soul player who led the charge, with John Bright (4/37) bowling beautifully as the Demons rolled the Cobras for an even 150 in the 52nd over. Bright was supported by former Cobra Jess Mathers (3/36) and upand-coming star Cody Miller (2/37), while Danny Diwell (71) - the captain - showed courage under fire for

John Bright gave his heart and soul for Kooweerup on Saturday, taking 4/37 against Merinda Park at Donnelly Reserve. 149836 Picture: ROB CAREW the home side. The man forever connected with Giles due to their top-of-the-order heroics, Chris O’Hara (35 not out), then joined Miller (32 not out) to lead the Demons to a commanding 0/70 at the close of play. Tooradin welcomed a stubborn Emerald (153) to Westernport Oval, the seventh-placed Bombers digging their heels in against the Seagulls for

the majority of the first day’s play. WGCA Country Week captain AJ Walker (38), Clint Marsh (30 not out) and Michael Nell (28) stuck around for long periods for the visitors, while Josh Lownds (3/60), Dylan Sutton (2/27) and Aaron Avery (2/32) enjoyed multiple success stories for the Seagulls. Second-placed Cardinia (1/37) did as expected and dominated the

Luck not of Warriors’ side By RUSSELL BENNETT COPPING a raw deal often comes with the territory in cricket, or any sport for that matter. But the West Gippsland Warriors must surely be wondering what the hell they did in a past cricketing life to deserve the raw deal they’ve received in each of their past two campaigns. This year’s squad - headed by Emerald Premier skipper AJ Walker - had a distinctly different feel to many others that’ve gone before it. While a host of big names weren’t available for selection, the ones who were picked were done so off the back of a strong formline throughout 2015-16. Past reputations be damned. And for Walker and his side, the week couldn’t have started off any better - cruising past Colac and District at Yarrambat. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Warriors dismissed Colac for 137 with Kyle Brooke, Scott Clark and Matt Hutchinson each taking three scalps. In reply, the Warriors finished on 6/225 with Daniel McCalman (70), Walker (49) and John Simpson (39) leading the way. Day two produced an even more emphatic West Gippsland performance. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Warriors rolled Seymour for 139 on the back of three wickets each to Brooke (3/25) and Emerald import Hashan Goonetilleke (3/28). They then reached 267 in their reply, with Walker (92) and Pakenham star Rob Elston (59) showing in equal measures devastating stroke-play and pure class. But on day three, and with a spot in Friday’s Division 3 final in their sights, the Warriors copped the curse of Sydney Pargeter Reserve for the second time in two seasons. Cricket is a game of luck, and West Gippsland could just as easily been on the right end of that, but on Wednesday it just wasn’t to be. In a rain-shortened 32-overs aside match, Walker’s side was overpowered as Warragul skipper Fraser Duncan compiled a brilliant undefeated 82 to lead his side to 5/167. Despite an impressive half-century

from Kooweerup keeper-batsman Chris Bright (56), the Warriors lost a steady stream of middle and lower order wickets to fall for 141. Then, on day four at Roxburgh Park, the real bad luck hit. In another weatheraffected game, the Warriors won the toss on a two-paced wicket and sent Goulburn Murray in. The decision appeared to reap rewards as the side could only muster 7/157 from its 45 overs thanks to Brooke (2/17), Hutchinson (2/18), Clark (2/38) and Jack Ryan (0/17). But, astonishingly, Goulburn Murray lost their last allocated new ball of the week - forcing the Warriors to instead fact a 40-over old ball from the outset. The side struggled early without the harder ball coming on to the bat, stumbling to 3/9 before John Simpson (43), Elston (32) and Clark (27) gallantly tried to get their side over the line. But it was to no avail, as West Gippsland’s 2016 campaign ended - dismissed for 147 - as they finished fourth on the eightteam Division 3 ladder behind eventual champions, the Yarra Valley. “It definitely wasn’t the ideal start to our innings,” Walker said of the Roxburgh Park game. “But I wouldn’t suggest the lack of a new ball was the cause of us losing our wickets. “A couple of rash decisions with bat cost us, but the first two days couldn’t have gone better. “Our bowlers were flawless all week and made life quite comfortable for us batters to score without pressure.” This year’s campaign was distinctly player-driven, and Walker said the group embraced that responsibility. “The blokes all came together brilliantly and I don’t think we could have prepared any better,” he said. “We did everything we could - there was just a couple of things beyond our control.” Walker said Brook, Hutchinson, Clark and Ryan were stellar with the ball, as were the likes of Daniel McCalman with the bat and Alex Nooy and Sam Van Der Zalm in the field. “All indications are that everyone wants to be a part of it again next year,” he said. “No doubt about it.”

opening exchanges against Upper Beaconsfield (130) at Gunton Oval. Spin-sensation Dwayne Doig (5/31) was once again unstoppable, taking his season-tally to 40 with his third five-wicket haul for the year, while Neil Barfuss (2/10) and Brayden Browne (2/31) also got busy in the clinches. Tommy Tyrrell (23) - batting at nine - was the Maroons’ top-scorer. Bulls’ Ben Maroney (16 not out) and Alex Nooy (13 not out) will look to build on their positive starts this weekend. And finally, the clash between the top and bottom teams in the Premier Division, Pakenham (1/73) and Cranbourne Meadows (107) went pretty much according to script at Toomuc Reserve. In front of a huge crowd for the Lions’ Pink Ladies Day it was leftarm speedster Jack Ryan (5/26) who provided the highlights, claiming his second five-wicket bag in a 30-wicket season. Skipper Dom Paynter (3/27) was also impeccable for the Lions, who closed to 1/73 at stumps on the back of a fine knock from Chris Smith (37 not out). The talented right-hand opener has now made an even 700runs for the season.

Taylor gives her all By JARROD POTTER MAKING her way back across the pond for another WNBA campaign, Dandenong Rangers’ great Penny Taylor will resume life in Phoenix after signing on for the coming season. Taylor, 34 who started life in basketball at Belgrave South Red Devils, has returned to the premier competition as she returned to her beloved Phoenix Mercury for a crack at a fourth WNBA championship. The Opals’ star swingman - who is set to play a massive role in Australia’s Olympic Games roster this year - will don the purple and orange for a 12th WNBA season. The two-time WNBA All-Star will reunite with championship-winning teammate Diana Taurasi and the tandem will light the court up according to the Phoenix’s management. “If Diana Taurasi is the heart of our franchise, Penny Taylor is the soul,” Mercury general manager Jim Pitman said on WNBA.com “Not only is she one of the greatest play-

ers in the history of the women’s game and one of the driving forces behind our three championships, she is a great team-mate, a leader, a calming force on the floor and in the locker room. “She has overcome injuries and setbacks, and she relentlessly persevered as the ultimate professional to get back on the court and help lead us to the title in 2014.” Taylor sits second on the franchise’s all-time list for games, points, assists and steals. Her short and sweet 2014/15 WNBL season - returning to play for the first time in a domestic season since 2002 with Dandenong - was capped off with selection in the WNBL All Star 5. Taylor won a FIBA World Championship gold medal with the Opals in 2006 and was named MVP of the tournament. She’s also a three-time WNBA champion and three-time all-star in addition to winning championships in her time in the Italian, Russian and Turkish leagues.

Long road ahead for Pakenham United FFA CUP - VICTORIAN PRELIMINARIES QUALIFYING ROUND - 21 FEBRUARY

By JARROD POTTER PAKENHAM United will pack up the bus and head for the border in its inaugural Football Federation Victoria (FFV) State League-level match. Joining FFV’s State League 5 South in 2016, the blue-and-gold brigade will get its first taste of state soccer in the FFA Cup - Victorian Qualifiers against the Wodongabased Twin City Wanderers. Drawing by far the toughest round-trip leg in the qualifying competition, the Cougars will have to travel at least four hours each way to make it from the FFV’s southerneastern most club to its north-eastern edge on the Victorian/NSW border. The news doesn’t get any better for Pakenham United with Twin City’s on-field credentials - a recent league/cup double winner in 2010 and also serving as the home club of Socceroos Archie Thompson and Josh Kennedy. If neither the drive nor the tough competition can halt the Cougars,

Finals pressure is on for Hampton Park HAMPTON PARK BOWLS THERE are only four weeks of the midweek pennant season to go and the potential for finals is starting to raise its head. Division 1 is just in the four and will need to continue winning to have a chance. Division 3 is in a better position, leading the competition, but still needing to play two teams in the four. Division 1 this week was at Dandenong Club. Marion Battaglia, Toni Sutton, Shane Collins and Neville Hendrie had a good 29-16 win and Val Moore, Ann Westwell, Ellen Smith and Chris Hendrie also won, 18-13. Geoff Ladner, Ron Beverly, Helen Lambert and Denise Eastick had a disappointing day losing 1130. Hampton Park (1) 4-58 lost to Dandenong Club (1) 12-59. At Pound Road, Division 3 also played Dandenong Club and had another good win to keep top spot on the ladder. Level at the lunch break, Lou Soligo, Trevor Harbright, Rob Woff and Peter Hayden, raised the standard after and won 26-12, while Grace Hogan, Jen Sherry, Gwen Clough and Ray Wood won 28-18. Ian Kitt, June Damon, John Nunan

and Geoff Ampt nearly lost it after a good lead to draw 18-18. Hampton Park (2) 15-72 defeated Dandenong Club (2) 1-48. Saturday’s Division 1 and Division 3 teams will need to find a way of winning any of their last three games after two more losses. Both teams now sit in the relegation area of the ladder. At Pound Road, Division 1 were with the powerful MCC but faded after the break to lose. The only winning rink was Mark Paton, John Nunan, Ian Bartlett and Larry Simpson 17-13, while Geoff Ampt, Jack Edwards, Chris Barnes and Laurie Edwards were the closest losers, 15-21. John Wright, Peter Hayden, Shane Collins and Steve Barnes lost 13-23 and Chris Hendrie, Sean McDonald, Neville Hendrie and Warwick Hardy lost 12-29. Hampton Park (1) 2-57 lost to MCC (1) 16-86. Val Simpson, Bill Holden, Jen Sherry and Ian Kitt went down 1230 and Val Moore, Gwen Clough, Gerry Cox and Bill Webb lost 17-20. Hampton Park (3) 4-80 lost to Heatherdale (5) 14-83.

CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS MIDWEEK Pennant - Division 3: Cranbourne RSL 79 defeated Narre Warren 43. The RSL continued the good work today winning by 36 shots. The ladies' team led by Yvonne van der Wees were the star performers winning by 20 shots. John Spencer’s team did well again winning by 15 shots. Big games still to come but the team is getting the job done each week. Results: A Black, M Hodges, P Dalton, Y van der Wees 31-11; D Hut, C Butler, B Bradbury, J Spencer 27-12; J Carretero, P Males, H Rogers, R Chapman 21-20. Division 4: Cranbourne RSL 61 defeated Upwey/Tecoma 57. In the clash of the two top sides the RSL proved just a little bit better than Upwey/Tecoma recording a hard fought four shot win away from home. Steve Hickson’s team was the big difference winning by 10 shots. Well done, away wins against quality opposition are aways hard to achieve. Results: D Muir, H Dietze, K Hickson, S Hickson 25-15; S Brobyn, V Bonney, G Dore, T Bonney 21-20; B Hall, M Bobetic, M Watkinson, J Black 15-22.

Ladies miss out on top of ladder CRANBOURNE BOWLS LADIES THE ladies knew they were in for a tough battle against Glen Waverley with the winner taking top spot on the ladder. Cranbourne took the early lead but after the lunch-break Glen Waverley came back and ran out winners by 14 shots in a high standard of bowls played at home. Skip Lesley Mulder, commented after the game that “the ladies lost it after the lunch-break, but the loss could be a great wake-up call with only two more games to be played before the start of finals.” All three rinks lost by small margins. SATURDAY Both Cranbourne Side 1 and Side 2 had a narrow 4 shot loss on Saturday. Jeff Parker put up a good fight with support from his team of Steve Bentley, Hans Worstelling and Lynne Wood who were the only winners on the day with 6 shots up. “We were within reach of defeating ladder leaders Pakenham as it really came down to the last two bowls of the game," Jeff said after the game. A similar story with the second side also within reach holding on until the last two bowls of the game with “luck not our friend today” said Skip Matt Bolting, who with his team of Graeme Wood, Ron Gascoigne and club legend Ray Boskell won by 8 shots. Reviews and news…

Here’s looking at you, Kia By EWAN KENNEDY KIA’S all-new Sorento has gone ultra stylish. The all-new Kia Sorento is offered in Si, SLi and Platinum grades. Prices begin at a reasonable $40,990 for a petrol two-wheel-drive Si and run up to $55,990 for a Platinum with the turbo-diesel and all-wheel-drive. Even the Sorento Si is well equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, power windows and mirrors and wood-look interior trim. The SLi has 18-inch alloys, the wood-look is extended to the steering wheel and centre console and there are sporty looking alloy pedals. Topping off the range is the Sorento Platinum with a huge sunroof, 19-inch alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel and a more powerful stereo. A feature we particularly liked in the Sorento Platinum is the choice of two-tone interior trim. The third generation look-at-me style certainly drew more than its fair share of looks during our test period. Sorento’s front end is big and bold, the bonnet is high and the grille has the familiar new-Kia design. Large cutouts for the foglights add to the effect and give it a bold wide look. The side profile also takes the big ‘n’ bold look with a deep window line that continues all the way to the rear. Sorento Si has an AM/FM audio

system with six speakers. There’s MP3, Bluetooth streaming, USB and Aux. Sportage SLi and the Platinum we tested used an Infinity Premium 10-speaker system with subwoofer and external amplifier. The system is operated through Kia’s audiovideo navigation (AVN) system using a 7.0-inch TFT LCD touchscreen. The new Kia Sorento comes with a choice of petrol or diesel engines. The Sorento’s four-cylinder 2.2-litre turbo-diesel is a unit already familiar to us from other Kia models but has had significant changes. In its latest iteration it produces 147 kW of power and a big 441 Nm to torque, the latter from 1750 rpm to 2750 revs. The 3.3-litre V6 petrol is an all-new design and puts out 199 kilowatts of

power and 318 Nm of torque. The petrol powerplant is only offered in 2WD models. As befits its heavier duty use the diesel is used in Sorentos with all-wheel-drive. All Sorento models have a six-speed automatic as manuals are rapidly becoming a thing of the past in Australia. Sorento has a five-star safety rating from Australasian NCAP. There are six airbags, including front-to-rear curtain coverage. All models have ABS with brake assist, ESC, VSM (vehicle stability management), a rear view camera, front and rear parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The Platinum as tested added Lane Departure Warning, Smart Cruise Control, Blind-spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert to the driver safety aids. The front seats are large, comfort-

able and support well. The second row pews can slide back and forward to juggle space. In their rearmost position they provide a huge amount of legroom for their occupants, meaning four large adults can travel in comfort if the back seats aren’t in use. The rearmost pair of seats and the centre seat in the second row are best left for children on anything other than short trips. The practical squared-off tail lets you carry a decent amount of luggage even when all seven seats are in use. With the seats down it’s positively cavernous. The centre-row seat has a 60 /40 split with a central panel that can fold down to become an armrest or opened all the way to allow for through loading of long items.

The body of the gen-three Kia Sorento has significantly increased rigidity over the previous model and also uses a lot of sound dampening materials. On the road we found the big Kia SUV to be smooth, quiet and comfortable. Sorento’s suspension and steering have a lot of Australian input. This firms it up in road grip without any great loss of comfort. The Sorento can be set to Sport or Eco modes - as keen drivers we preferred the Sport setting. Handling is competent, though don’t expect it to compete with the big name German SUVs in this class. Sorento is a large vehicle tuned for family comfort ahead of sporting pretensions. The variable settings do make it better than average for the Asian class but if you’re looking for driving excitement, forget it. During our test period fuel consumption of the turbo-diesel was in the nine to 10 litres per 100 kilometres range in around town driving, dropping to six to eight litres when on the open road or motorways. Kia’s all-new Sorento offers a nice combination of style, carrying capacity and sophistication and is already making a name for itself on the new-car sales charts. To inspect the Kia range contact Berwick Kia, 2-12 Clyde Road, Berwick. Phone 9709 1900.
