CASEY’S police chief has hit out at residents who are willing to let the area’s Neighbourhood Watch (NW) die as crime grows at one of the highest rates in the state. Inspector Paul Breen said that it was a crucial “institution we can’t let die”. “As local commander I’m sick to death of hearing people say what are we doing about the high crime rate, ice, hoons, so I say what the bloody hell are you doing?” “We’re in it together,” Insp Breen said. “We absolutely can’t let NW fold, it’s a real institution across Victoria, it’s a great initiative and, above all else, it keeps people aware - it’s about looking after each other’s back.” Insp Breen said the only reason NW will fall over in Casey is because of a lack of community interest and engagement. “Don’t tell me out of the 29 suburbs in Casey we can’t find someone from each suburb to become NW champions,” he said. “In an area with such a high crime rate and family violence and hooning and drug use, it’s about time we committed to NW, stepped up and fully supported crime prevention.” Insp Breen said Casey police are looking for NW local champions to continue the crime preventative work. “Above all else, it’s people being proactive and aware, looking out for their neighbours’ property and actually having each other’s backs.”

Currently NW groups operate in 57 out of the 79 municipalities in Victoria and by March that number may be forced to drop. Casey NW secretary of 15 years Jennifer Baird and treasurer of 35 years 67-year-old Ken Bailey have said they are past their use-by dates. “I need a break from treasury roles, I’m still going to stay on the committee, just give up my position as treasure,” Mr Bailey said. “I’m very worried it will have to fold - membership numbers has always been a concern.” Ms Baird, who has to give up her role due to her health, said members will assess if the community service “will have to call it quits” after their March meeting. “I’m more concerned because I don’t think the young ones really understand the need for it,” she said. A sad Ms Baird said installing a NW sign in Lyndhurst will be the group’s last job if they’re forced to close. “The signs have had positive outcomes for estates and I think crime will increase without NW,” she said. “Our signs deter people and I had feedback from Marriott Waters’ residents saying after the sign was installed the crime rate significantly dropped.” Casey NW currently has 2000 home crime prevention packs which are due to be distributed. To get involved in Casey NW phone Jennifer Baird on 9799 3326.

Ambos base close may cause delays By ANEEKA SIMONIS PARAMEDICS based in Narre Warren fear they will be significantly delayed when responding to emergency call-outs in Berwick and surrounding areas after hearing that their base may be closed. A Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) paramedic suspects the medical support unit will be relocated to Hampton Park and fears this will result in potential emergency response delays or being “dragged” from their dedicated service area to places such as nearby

Dandenong. “Theoretically, it could increase MICA response by as much as 15 minutes,” said the paramedic who wished to remain anonymous. “Considering operational demand where the majority of our work is in Berwick and Pakenham, managers in the area see it as a bad decision. They are trying to fight it.” The branch which is subject to potential closure is located at Victor Crescent in Narre Warren. Ambulance Victoria’s Metropolitan East Regional Director Cath Anderson confirmed the site is being

assessed for closure, with the lease on the property soon to expire. “The current site does not meet our design standards and lacks the usual amenities of a modern ambulance branch such as a garage and training rooms,” she said. “As such, we are reviewing our options to ensure that we are in the best location to service the community as well as providing a workplace that is modern, comfortable and suitable for our paramedics in the long term.” Ms Anderson said the Victor

Crescent branch is separate to a larger nearby branch where the Berwick paramedic team was relocated to a few years ago. She said population data, current response performance and predicted future workload data will be closely considered by Ambulance Victoria before deciding whether to relocate the 24-hour MICA service. “The area is also well serviced by 24-hour ambulance branches at Hampton Park, Berwick, Beaconsfield, Lyndhurst, Pakenham and Officer,” Ms Anderson said.

IN BRIEF Charges over fatal crash A MAN has been charged over a fatal crash in Hallam last year. The 35-year-old Croydon man was arrested on Wednesday 10 February following an investigation into a three-car crash on the on-ramp of the South Gippsland Freeway in September. About 7.30am on Saturday 12 September a cement truck crashed end to end with two cars and the male driver of the middle car died shortly after in hospital. The Croydon man was charged with one count each of culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death, reckless conduct endangering life, possessing amphetamine and careless driving. He was bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 19 February.

Car-jacking attack AN ENDEAVOUR Hills driver was assaulted in an attempted car-jacking in Doveton during which a woman walked onto the road forcing him to stop and he was chased by four people wielding poles. The incident occurred on Friday 5 February at 9.27pm on Kidds Road, Doveton, during which the 25-year-old victim sustained minor bruising and swelling. After stopping the victim’s car, the woman was greeted by three men. The driver got out of his car and was threatened by the group during which the men, aged in their late teens and early 20s, demanded his keys, wallet and phone. There was a physical altercation during which the man’s keys were stolen. Luckily the victim managed to retrieve his keys from the ground and he was then able to get back inside his car. As he drove off he was chased down the street by the group of four who were waving poles. The female was described as being in her 30s, small framed and 130cm tall with brown hair and bad skin. She was wearing a dress and was holding a dark handbag.

WHAT’S IN A NAME DELVES INTO THE FASCINATING STORIES AND PERSONALITIES BEHIND SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST-KNOWN STREET NAMES. THIS WEEK THE JOURNAL LOOKS AT CENTRAL DANDENONG’S LANGHORNE STREET, NAMED FOR ALFRED LANGHORNE.

Stockman counted on his connections WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Alfred Langhorne.

BORN into a London family of merchants and stockbrokers, Alfred Langhorne longed to join his three older brothers in the new colony. He arrived at Port Jackson in 1835 at the age of 17. He joined his brother Charles working on a rural New South Wales property, learning the skills of stockmen. When the property was sold a year after his arrival, Alfred and Charles embarked on a career of overlanding cattle and sheep from NSW to both Melbourne and Adelaide. Langhorne Street in Dandenong and

Langhorne Creek in South Australia are named to acknowledge the direct connections to the Langhorne brothers. Alfred was the first person Joseph Hawdon - the first white man to settle in Dandenong - saw when he arrived in Dandenong in 1839. Alfred was at the time overseer of 'Bigning’, the first run in the area, owned by his uncle Captain Lonsdale. While in Adelaide on one of the drives, Alfred met the young and beautiful Sarah August and they married in 1841. Mr and Mrs Alfred Langhorne were entertained for dinner by their neighbour Dr Farquhar McCrae in April 1842, indicating that Alfred stayed around the district for some time. In 1845, Alfred and Sarah moved into their homestead at Laverton and made it their principle place of residence.

By this time Alfred opened an office in Bourke Street, Melbourne, and became a flour merchant. Alfred continued to overland cattle and export sheep to Launceston, and owned various properties around Melbourne as well as property and wool stores in Williamstown. In 1854, Alfred and Sarah decided to liquidate much of their assets and return to London to educate their two children, Robert and Alice. Alfred returned to Laverton Homestead in 1867 after Alice died from diphtheria at age 13. Sarah returned the following year, bringing Alice with her. It was not unusual in those times to include deceased loved ones when moving

vast distances. Robert stayed in England to complete his schooling. Sarah passed away from Parkinson’s disease in 1871 and Alfred died three years later while a resident of a private hotel in St Kilda. Robert was on a ship to Australia when his father died. With no close family or property in Australia he soon returned to England, never to see Australia again. His descendants eventually migrated to Canada where they still live today. Sarah and Alice are buried in the Williamstown Cemetery. Alfred is in the pioneers section at Fawkner Cemetery. - Compiled with assistance from Dandenong and District Historical Society

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 17 February 1916 An Acknowledgement: Also a Suggestion To the Editor Sir - It is refreshing in these times, when we are calling on so many of our younger men to make the great sacrifice, if such should be their fate, and expecting the elders, who must remain at home to show an equally self-sacrificing spirit, to find another of our local rich men rising to the occasion. In your last issue you referred to the patriotism of Mr John Hemmings in lending his recently-acquired motor car to the recruiting sergeant. Our old friend is evidently substantial enough to be unaffected by the stress of war and the vision

of impending taxation. More power to him. I believe his heart is in the right place. May his action be like the little cloud that rose from the sea as a forerunner of an abundance of rain. May the example of doing something be contagious and a strong south-wester blow the germs right round Langhorne Street and up Walker Street. 50 years ago 10 February 1966 Plea to Prevent C-Day rush on banks Dandenong - overcrowding of banks next Monday, C-Day could be lessened if customers used them only for urgent business transactions, president of Dandenong Chamber of Commerce, Mr Warren Titchier

said yesterday. He said co-operation by the public could greatly assist the banks during the first few days of conversion to decimal currency. Although all accounts would be in dollars and cents from Monday, there was no urgent need for customers to visit the bank about accounts, particularly savings deposits. Some interesting things which will be in dollars and cents as from C-Day will be milk, bread, newspapers and bus fares. A few important things to keep in mind are: All cheques must be written in dollars and cents as from February 14. All the banknotes £.s.d. are completely interchangeable.

Of the coins only the five cent (6d), 10 cents (1/-), and 20 cents (2/-) are completely interchangeable. 20 years ago 19 February 1996 Writing on the wall for graffiti Greater Dandenong has declared war on graffiti and will spend $100,000 on a big clean up. The city’s chief executive officer, Mr Warwick Heine, said the one-off blitz would help clean up the city’s image and was the best way to beat an “out of control” problem. “Most cities have given up on graffiti, saying it is an insurmountable problem, but we are going to tackle it head on. By the end of this year we will have rid the city of graffiti and won the war,” he said.

5 years ago 14 February 2011 Washed Out As water receded from the floods on February 4 and 5, residents saw the extent of the damage to their neighbourhoods. It came without warning, with an almighty force and the recent flooding across Greater Dandenong affected almost every facet of the community. Some of the worst hit areas included a Dandenong Go Kart track which was inundated with up to 4 metres of water. - Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

X Files agent reopens case Stunned by the creatures and when they wake up they’re in the car, travelling back, they’re driving. “And I can only make the assumption it was the same for the other people.” Now the investigators at VUFOA are back on the case, not that they ever left. And unlike Fox Mulder, these investigators are real, and they’re calling on the witnesses to come forward again. “There’s nothing like getting it from the horse’s mouth,” Mr Arnold said. “We want to do our own independent investigation into it, hopefully speak to them directly and just let them see what they say. “They might remember more now than they did at the time.” When people go to the trouble of coming forward and there’s a level of substantial evidence, Mr Hurle said, that’s where people should have an open mind. “The potential has to exist for these things,” he said. To check out a video of investigator Ben Hurle explaining the Kelly Cahill case, from the paddock in question, visit berwicknews.starcommunity.com. au For more information, contact Ben and Andrew on 0456 447 112, or visit www.vufoa. com.

FOX Mulder has given the Victorian UFO Action (VUFOA) group a lot of work in the last week. Ever since the fictional XFiles detective mentioned the Kelly Cahill case - one of the most important UFO cases in the world - on the TV Show reboot recently, the infamous 1993 alleged UFO sighting in Narre Warren has shot back into the public eye. Now, more than 20 years later, two leading VUFOA investigators - founder Andrew Arnold and Ben Hurle - are hoping the X-Files mention will see the witnesses from the case come forward again. “This is a good opportunity to perhaps draw some of the witnesses out,” Mr Hurle said. “Now it’s the 21st century, it might be really nice time to revisit it again with 21st century investigators and we can look at it again from a new perspective.” The big problem is they have no names, only pseudonym names. “We have snippets of information and because the case is in the top five in the world, it really does need the attention brought back to it,” Mr Hurle said. “Not to bring these people out to parade them in front of the public ... but perhaps for their own benefit as a part of the process.”

Kelly claimed that in August 1993 she was abducted by aliens while driving home with her husband along BelgraveHallam Road. Ms Cahill, who was 27 at the time, told Today Tonight in the 1990s that she spotted what looked like an airship the size of a swimming pool with a ring of orange lights in the Narre Warren paddock. Extra-terrestrial beings are said to prefer areas near open bodies of water, like Lysterfield Lake, and power lines. Kelly Cahill later recalled getting out of the car and then being abducted by skinny black figures with bulging red eyes after they approached her. At the time she said she saw two other cars also stop to investigate the alleged UFO, and these two sets of separate witnesses - key to why the case is infamous - later corroborated Ms Cahill’s story with investigators. But the memory of this confrontation only came later. In the early days after the incident, Kelly and her husband, and presumably the other witnesses, couldn’t account for about an hour and a half of time. “The beings came charging across the paddock, they (the witnesses) lose their sight, they can’t see - so they’re blinded,” Mr Hurle said “So they’ve effectively been hobbled, stunned if you like.

Funds wait on findings CASEY council will call on the State Government to provide interim funding for the Challenge Family Violence program, with the royal commission findings delayed until the end of March. Community providers have been told they must wait for news on funding until the Royal Commission into Family Violence releases its findings, which now won’t be made public until 29 March after the commission was granted a onemonth extension in December. But in a notice of motion carried last week, Cr Amanda Stapledon urged Casey council to write to the Andrews Government, seeking interim funding for the challenge program, which dried up in November. The future of the Challenge Family Violence program which ran for three years and

engaged community leaders across Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong - is still up in the air. “What we’re saying is family violence hasn’t stopped. Can we have some funding until such time as the royal commission has made its decision?” Cr Stapledon told Star News. “We’re asking for support in the interim until the findings have been released. “This was a really effective program that helped educate and support people in this area, it was a unified approach we had to addressing issues in the three municipalities. “Without the funding, families are left unsupported and more vulnerable.” Family Violence Minister Fiona Richardson said the government was directing an $81.3 million package to ensure “those impacted by harm are supported.”

“The Andrews Labor Government is fixing Victoria’s broken system and doing more to keep those who suffer from family violence safe,” she said. “With the Royal Commission into Family Violence well underway, we are directing our $81.3 million package to ensure those impacted by this harm are supported. “The royal commission will consider the importance of preventative responses in its recommendations that are to be delivered on 29 March.“ Shadow Minister for Police Edward O’Donohue has criticised the government’s decision to scrap the funding, saying there was “no excuse” to halt the funding at this time. Rising costs brings free bus to a stop GREATER Dandenong Council has blamed rising costs for the decision to end its free shuttle bus service in central Dandenong on 8 March. The Greater Dandenong Free City Shuttle Bus, which stops at Dandenong’s shopping district, market, railway station and hospital, has been operating for 10 years.

In a statement, the council stated that the shuttle’s patronage fell from an average of 160 daily passengers to 68 in the past four years. In the meantime, its cost had nearly doubled from $2.25 a passenger trip to $4.58. Mayor Heang Tak said the bus had been introduced as a trial to help shoppers move

around the central activity district. He said Harmony Square and Halpin Way developments had helped make it easier to walk from the train station to Dandenong’s centre. Public bus routes also travelled to the same places visited by the shuttle service, he said. For alternative bus information, go to greaterdandenong.com.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… THE Star News reporter who has helped reopen the X-Files investigation into the famous Narre Warren UFO abduction has visited the scene of the incident. The story of Kelly Cahill’s alien abduction in a Narre Warren paddock had gone quiet for the past 20 years but was highlighted in the new series of the paranormal X-Files TV show. In the show Agent Mulder quizzes another character about the depth of his UFO-hunting credentials and in particular the Cahill case. Our reporter was keen to learn more about the incident and accompanied two UFO investigators to the scene of the alleged 1993 incident along the Belgrave-Hallam Road which included seven-foot tall aliens, a beam of light, and an hour and a half of unaccounted time. He has no intention of being caught out if Agent Mulder ever puts him on the spot.

UFO fever has landed in Narre Warren. dents Mary Colquhoun and Greater Dandenong councillor Angela Long have in common? A love of bingo. Angela attended Mary’s 100th birthday celebration at the Dandenong Club on 30 January. The pair have known each other for 20 years. Mary’s son Bob said his mum, who turned 100, played bingo weekly for chocolate at her nursing home and for money at a competitive bingo competition each Friday. “She’s just disappointed that she only plays two books these days, while Angela plays six,” Bob said.

SADLY police last week confirmed a 68-yearold Noble Park man was one of four victims on board the plane bound for Tasmania which tragically crashed into waters off Barwon Heads. A 55-year-old Mordialloc man, 63-year-old Black Rock woman and a 65-year-old Black Rock man were also on board the ill-fated plane which took off from Moorabbin Airport. The aircraft crashed about two kilometres off Collendina Beach between Barwon Heads and Point Lonsdale, and water police have been scouring the ocean floor since the crash. A fisherman who was out on the water at the time witnessed the accident and contacted police.

SIXTIETH wedding anniversaries don’t come around every day. This week a loving Berwick couple will celebrate the special milestone together along with their family. A Star News journalist went out to speak to the elderly couple who were pleased as punch to share their love story - which began at the Dandenong dance a long time ago. But it was still fresh in their minds.

A REPORT of an interstate councillor’s death proved a trifle premature at a Greater Dandenong council meeting on 8 February. A moving tribute was led for the man, who had often visited the municipality. Some councillors gasped with shock - with good reason it turns out. It was soon confirmed that it was a man who shared the same name that had died.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CATHY Wieckmann provides a fun and happy sanctuary for children at their toughest of times. A husband and wife team, Eric and Cathy have been doing what they love for the past 17 years and after this year’s Australia Day both of them have Casey’s highest of honours. Cathy was awarded City of Casey Citizen of the Year on Australia Day for her work behind the scenes at CHIPS, Christians Helping In Primary Schools. Cathy calls herself the background figure to her husband’s public approach to their not-forprofit organisation. “Eric was awarded in 2005,” she said. “I was very shocked to receive one, too, I’m happy to be in the background- they said I was the brains behind it, but I wouldn’t t go that far.” The organisation has been taking children who have or are in the midst of highly traumatic experiences on a camp to Phillip Island, where they each have their own buddy who volunteers their time. “Our aim isn’t to fix children we just want parents, carers and children to realise that they are of intrinsic value and whatever the gifting and capabilities of that child is, we want to encourage it,” Cathy said. “We believe that healing from trauma and grief can come from spending time with groups and in a community environment.” The CHIPS Chaplaincy program is now in 17 schools across Casey, Cardinia and Knox and liaises with 14 chaplains along with their beloved camps, which has a waiting list. “We take everyone no matter their needs and we have a registered nurse on all our camps, parents are also welcome to come and the effects are far reaching,” Cathy said. “One story that stands out to me is when a mum brought her children to one of our camps a couple of years ago after their dad died and they were in shock and grief. “Years later she wrote to us to say how well they are going now and that she felt the ‘life gets better camp’ was a turning point in their healing.”

Financial framework THE article, Framework For The Future (Journal News, 8 February) identifies the strong determination of the City of Casey and its 11 councillors Sameh Aziz, Damien Rosario, Wayne Smith and company as well as management to construct the Autumn Place Family and Community Centre and possibly the other three projects (whilst the current construction of the new Casey Council Precinct costing $125 million) as stated at the Build Our Future Forum held on 5 December 2015 at any costs to the Casey ratepayers despite the high proposed Casey council rates to its property owners in the 2016/2017 financial year. As a participant and witness at this forum, it was previously observed that the 70 to 80 attendees voted with the majority to oppose these four projects, including Autumn Place, to maintain the rate capping of 2.09 per cent to financially benefit the affordability of all Casey property owners. As it has turned out, councillor Sameh Aziz, CEO Mike Tyler and the other 10 Casey councillors were aware of the final vote however they are determined to construct this structure. Can this council be trusted, especially its 11 councillors and management to service the Casey constituents? Let this structure be built with private funds and not ratepayer funds due to an uncontrolled Casey council budget. Let us not forget the acts of secrecy by the Casey councillors and management. Paul Richardson, Endeavour Hills.

Rates cap: easy way out THE question is will Casey council have a financial crisis due to any rates cap or are we really seeing a management problem? According to Lachlan Moorhead’s report (Council Bids To Break Cap, Journal News, 8 February) Casey Mayor Sam Aziz, claims Casey “council was acting in the best interests of ratepayers” by seeking to apply for a rates variation above 2.5 per cent from the Essential Services Commission. Cr Aziz has also publicly claimed that Casey will be faced with a multi-million dollar financial

deficit due to rates capping in future. Cr Aziz has not informed residents and ratepayers that Casey council also has the capacity to compensate for any shortfall in revenue from substantial productivity offsets by varying its own often controversial spending patterns. Council decided to spend $125 million on the Bunjil Place project. This project cannot in anyway be described as an essential community service especially in view of the fact that council is aware that future new sub-divisions will need more family and children’s centres and recreational facilities. Casey council also voted to support an overseas trip to China for up to six Casey councillors

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS and staff. Casey has also used ratepayers’ finances to promote the East-West Link and the promotion of Bunjil Place. Only 21 councils have registered an intention to apply for a rates cap variation. This means that most councils have found ways to achieve productivity gains and match the expectations of their local communities. If Casey has financial problems they may really need to look at their CEO Mike Tyler whom they keep reappointing without advertising his job, even though many community residents no longer have confidence in his leadership. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

New hospital opening in 2017

MEDICALLY SPEAKING

The new St John of God Berwick Hospital is now under construction at Kangan Drive, Berwick and will be ready to deliver care closer to home in 2017. 210 beds 200 new positions Intensive Care Unit 8 Operating Theatres

Cardiac Unit 6 Birthing Suites 350 basement carparks Cardiac/Vascular Catheter Laboratory St John of God Berwick Hospital, Gibb St will be operating as usual during construction

Works have begun on the new hospital.

Building health THE new year has started with a bang for St John of God Berwick Hospital. Monday 11 January saw works start on the new hospital at Kangan Drive, Berwick. The sod was officially turned in a ceremony on 21 January. The progress of the build will be evident as the year progresses. During January the site was flattened and prepared for the heavy machinery which will be used to dig into the ground for the basement car park and foundations. A road is being built in between the stage one building

(Specialist Centre) and Chisholm Tafe to allow easy access for deliveries and trucks. A car park and site sheds are also being constructed for the comfort of construction workers. Digging has begun and this is an exciting stage for the community because the changes are visible with the start of a very large hole dug into the ground and a flurry of large trucks and machinery onsite. The new St John of God Berwick Hospital is a much anticipated new facility for the Casey and Cardinia region. It will offer all of the services currently offered at the

Gibb Street hospital as well as new facilities such as 210 beds, an intensive care unit, eight operating theatres, a cardiac and vascular catheter laboratory, a cardiac unit, six birthing suites, a six bed special care nursery and 350 basement car parks. The current Gibb Street hospital will operate as usual during construction. For further information on the redevelopment of the St John of God Berwick Hospital, visit www.sjog.org.au/berwickredevelopment or follow St John of God Berwick Hospital on Facebook for the latest news, developments and photos from the site.

Let’s Talk FOR INVESTMENT, PROPERTY MAKES GOOD SENSE By TANIA PHILLIPS BUYING residential investment property can be a good investment in the future according to local real estate agents and financiers. Delwyne Rayner, Branch Principal and Wealth Manager of Yellow Brick Road, Dandenong, said there were several advantages to buying residential investment properties. “Firstly there is the obvious compulsory saving by capital gain,” she said. “As a rule of thumb property usually doubles in value every seven to 10 years. “Then there is the advantages of negative gearing tax savings. If rental income is less than the mortgage repayments, you can claim that loss at your tax rate. “New properties can be depreciated heavily particularly over the first four years.

“Established property renovations can also be depreciated. “As opposed to the share market, residential rental property can always be let, even in a recession, by slightly reducing rent. “People have to have a roof over their head. This makes it easier for the investor to ride out a recession in the economy. “You may see a large shift from the share market to the property market during tough economic times.” Harry Li from I-Sell Springvale, one of, if not, the most awarded auctioneers in the whole of Australia, also believes there are plenty advantages in buying property for investment. “First of all it has proven capital growth,” he said. “In recent history (the past four to five decades) capital growth (for properties) was not only steady but consistent in value, and not as up

and down us other investments. A lot less volatile, in fact.” Harry said Melbourne, in particular, was always growing with new areas of development opening up. “The population growth will always ensure a high demand for property in the market,” he explained. “This area in particular is very much a growth corridor.” “But like any investment it is always good to consider your financial capabilities first.” He said it was important to seek professional advice from banks, accountants and other institutions and get the right advice before entering into property or any such investment. Allison Grant, Director of Ray White Noble Park/Springvale, said that the substantial rises in property had made the market harder to break into, especially for first home buyers, and this had given way to

a different kind of rise – that of the “rent-investor”. “Essentially, people rent a home where they would like to live but can’t afford to buy while investing in rental properties in more affordable areas,” she said. “While you may be pining for that inner-city abode, it’s likely that your funds won’t stretch that far. Hence, the reason for looking homes for sale further out from the city and “rent investing”. She said rent-investors would be able to use the yields to help cover the costs of maintenance and home loan repayments, while renting in their desired location. “Property investment has a number of benefits to the real estate market and the overall economy, which is why the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has allowed for a plethora of deductions,” she said.

DEMAND DRIVES GROWTH AREAS BY ANDREW PERKINS THE resurgence in the housing market in Melbourne has contributed to the strength of Melbourne’s growth area market. Drivers of demand such as low interest rates, consumer confidence and above average population growth have also played their part. Melbourne is still one of the most affordable and livable cities in Australia attracting local buyers and interstate buyers due to its continuous growth in

median house price. Clyde has been an attractive area for home buyers due to its close proximity to the Monash Freeway, which is due to undergo a $400 million upgrade, amenities and parks but, most of all, its potential for future growth. The median land price in Clyde and Clyde North is $236,000 while in Casey it is about $241,000. Casey has one of the most expensive median land prices in Melbourne and is one of the fastest growth corridors. The Clyde Creek PSP approved in December 2014 and Clyde North PSP approved in November 2011 has sparked a large

number of new land estates in the area by highly regarded developers including Frasers Property, Moremac, Pask Goup, Villawood, Brown Property Group and National Pacific Property and has adding approximately 20,500 new homes to the Casey shire. With a total of 12 active projects and more than 400 lots available at any time, buyers have ample choice for land to suit all budgets. Land sizes range in size from 210 to 913 square metres and prices ranging from $120,000 to $370,000. ANDREW PERKINS IS GENERAL MANAGER RESEARCH AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT FOR RED23

CLYDE’S SOMETHING SPECIAL IS ON THE RISE BY TANIA PHILLIPS CLEAN and green with two large town centres and plenty of schools in the planning, Clyde is the up-and-coming area in the Casey/Cardinia region, according to a local expert. Shane Howard, director of KaiKura Land Sales and a man who has been in the real estate industry around the Clyde region for many years, believes that in 10 years’ time the area will be “something special”. “Clyde is what I’d call the new Berwick,” he said. “Everyone would love to live in Berwick because of the prestige of the place but there no new land developments coming through there.” And while Clyde has always been a premier area over the past 30 years it is about to really come into its own over the next decade with plenty of major developments planned. “In Clyde there is 2800 hectares of residential land that the government has put aside for residential development - most in the Clyde Creek vicinity.” He said the emphasis had

been placed on providing green areas and walkway bridges across the creek. Clyde Creek Precinct Structure Plans, which was approved in November 2014, sets out the planned development of a mixed use precinct which will ultimately provide 7500 jobs and 13,900 new homes, as well as supporting services and infrastructure. The precinct extends from Hardys Road in the north to Ballarto Road in the south, and from BerwickCranbourne Road/ Clyde-Five Ways Road in the west to Pound Road and Bells Road extension in the east. Casey Fields South Residential PSP sets out the development of a new residential community of about 1460 new homes and facilities and services to support a new community. This plan applies to the area bound by Clyde-Five Ways Road to the east, Casey Fields Boulevard to the west, and north from Ballarto Road to the southern Boundary of Casey Fields sports fields.

IT IS TRULY THE UP-AND-COMING AREA FOR THE REGION...

20 DANDENONG JOURNAL Monday, 15 February, 2016

“It is truly the up-andcoming area for the region,” he said. “And we have a front row seat with Clydevale.” One of the latest developments, Clydevale is just 10 minutes from Berwick and 45 minutes from the CBD. Residents will live within walking distance of the new regional shopping centres and a new town centre and close to plenty of established amenities, including a host of excellent schools and tertiary education options and Casey Fields sporting facilities, all a short drive away or easily accessible by rail and bus services. Mr Howard said Casey council and the government had worked to put together something truly special. Infrastructure to support this area is now going in including what Mr Howard described as the “biggest (waste water) pumping station” in the whole area. “It should be ready for operation in 12 months and there were will be serious development,” he said.

HIGH TIME TO MOVE IN CIRCA 1886 continues to be one of the most sought after locations for buyers in the Berwick and Clyde North area. The first stage has been built, stage seven is now selling and more than 100 families are already calling Circa home. Built around the historic Circa homestead, the location offers elevation and many homes have views of the surrounding area. Circa offers a one-hectare central park with play equipment, a sports area and plenty of open space. The park is complemented by landscaped areas and reserves which are perfect for spending time with family and friends or

just relaxing. The location of Circa means that it is close to the important amenities including local schools, shopping, recreation and transport. The local Eden Rise Village is a popular shopping spot with cafés and specialty shops as well as Coles and Aldi supermarkets. Home to a diverse range of residents, the estate provides for different lifestyles and living requirements with a range of lot sizes, house and land packages, and townhouses on offer. During 2016 Circa will also provide a limited release of exclusive park front architect designed townhouses.

Dean Pask, the managing director of Pask Group and the developer behind Circa said: “I’ve been delighted with the response we’ve had from our residents - both in uptake and in their feedback about Circa. “We’ve had a lot of positive comments about the park, the views and how much people are enjoying living in the estate.” For more information contact sales agent Belinda Jackson on 9018 7234 or visit the Circa Sales Office at 211 Grices Road, Clyde North. It is open 11am to 5pm seven days a week. Alternatively visit www. circaberwick.com.au

WATER AND WORKS AT RAMLEGH SPRINGS SINCE its launch in November 2014, Ramlegh Springs has established itself as the premier new community within the Clyde North corridor and when visitors look around they will immediately understand why. One of the notable features of Ramlegh Springs is its inspiring central wetlands which, when complete, will make a bold and natural statement leading into and through the estate. With the first stages of the Ramlegh Springs community in the midst of construction it’s quite easy for visitors to picture how impressive this natural wetland area will be. Located over nine hectares and connected to the community by a series of meandering walking tracks, boardwalks and nature trails, the Ramlegh Springs wetlands comprises a series of distinctive water bodies located in a tranquil natural environment. Following the success of an earlier water front release, Ramlegh Springs will also soon be releasing 14 exclusive home sites, with frontages that overlook the estate’s sparkling waters. “With lot sizes up to an impressive 780 square metres, this next waterfront release provides purchasers with an unrivalled opportunity for a Ramlegh resident to build a luxury home that benefits from spectacular and valuable views of the Ramlegh Springs central

Wetlands,” said estate manager Trudi Kerr. Designed to provide the very best a new community can offer, stage construction and road works are now in full swing, the first steps towards delivering on an impressive master plan that also allows for an architect designed town centre, a local school, sizeable parks and gardens and community sports ground. To find out more about Ramlegh Springs visit www.ramleghsrpings.com.au, drop in to the sales office on Pattersons Road, Clyde North, or phone estate managers Trudi Kerr or Ted Ogrady on 9669 5999. Drum beats for the heart By NARELLE COULTER BALLOONS and streamers rained down on the Drum Theatre on Thursday night as the arts hub rolled out the red carpet for a spectacular 10th birthday party. Opened on 11 February 2006 by then Premier Steve Bracks, the Drum has hosted more than 1650 performances in the ensuing 10 years. Among the invited guests were founding members John and Joan Mallard. The couple attended the inaugural opening concert and are still passionate advocates for the Drum. “We love the people, the atmosphere and most of all the staff,” said John. “The staff are friends of ours.” “They are friends with everyone,” added Joan. New member Liz Philippe was there with her friend Luisa Elder, both of Keysborough. The friends are particularly looking forward to Opera Australia’s staging of The Marriage of Figaro later this year. “I like the theatre and I belong to a theatre group,” said Liz. “My father used to take me to the theatre when I was little and I haven’t been able to afford to do that with my grandchildren until now. “I am retiring this year so there are lots of shows at the Drum I’m going to take them to. You have to take them young or they won’t like it. “The Drum caters for everybody. It’s accessible and diverse,” added Luisa. Lynette and John Mitchell met at a Back to Dandenong dance at the Dandenong Town Hall 31 years ago. John’s father once owned a bicycle shop in the old Vanity Arcade.

Foundation Drum members John and Joan Mallard. They are musical fans and have been Drum members for almost 10 years. Former City of Dandenong CEO Colin Dickie said when he was in charge of the city the Drum was just a “twinkling in the eye”. He and wife Susan were delighted to see how the venue had thrived over the past decade. “It has put Dandenong on the cultural map, bringing wonderful shows

here and it has preserved the town hall facade incorporating a modern performing arts centre,” Colin said. The night held special significance for Helen and Maddi Streefkerk, wife and daughter of the inaugural Drum director Paul Streefkerk who died suddenly in 2009. Helen said Paul would have been proud that his vision continued to thrive a decade on. “I’m sure he would have been very

Asanti Dance Theatre performers in action. proud. When you look back on those early days he had a real vision. “He was a real advocate for the multi-cultural side of Dandenong. He wanted to bring in all different groups to perform here,” Helen said. Illusionist Cosentino, who is performing in China, sent a video message saying the Drum had been vital to launching his early career and urged people to support local theatre venues. Drum director Greg Hordacre said

the Drum had been vital in “stepping up and telling the Dandenong story”. “Theatres belong in the heart of communities and this remains one of the best theatres in the country. “We continue to welcome the best performers in Australia to perform on our stage. “It plays a part in promoting Dandenong as a unique, accessible destination and a fantastic place to live, work and play.”

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

The centre's innovative check in bar. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Owners of HealthMint Medical Centre in Cranbourne North, Chantelle Brott and Dr Paul Tescher.

Health care gets fresh By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE North is home to a fresh take on healthcare, with traditional medical centre ideals thrown out the window paving way for hot desking, mobile staff and consulting rooms with a difference. The innovative take on preventative health and general practice centres on its custom interiors and consultation rooms which mean less time waiting and no reception desk. HealthMint Medical Centre at The Eve shopping precinct opened in October, even sparking interest from Casey mayor Sam Aziz, who said the technology based systems are ‘turning medi-

cine on its head.’ Since opening its doors the centre has accrued around 250 patients and holds an even stronger online audience through its Facebook page. Owners, Chantelle Brott and Dr Paul Tescher said many of their architectural choices grew out of negative patient experiences. “There are no desks in the consulting rooms and doctors use a tablet and swing table rather than sitting at a desk and turning away from the patient to make notes,” Chantelle said. The duo made the decision to ensure their patients were the centre of the room, enabling the GP to keep eye contact throughout the consultation.

The user friendly approach to the centre starts with the booking process, which can be done online, over the phone or by using the HealthMint app. And patients log themselves in using tablets which have replaced the need for a seated receptionist. “In the future we want to have our reception staff work more like a concierge and have them mobile around the practice, assisting patients and keeping the checking in and out flowing,” Chantelle said. Decorated with high-end contemporary furniture, the waiting room has become a major draw card for the new Casey business.

“We’ve had people walk in and say this is our new practice, before even sitting down with me to discuss their health - that’s how powerful the space is,” Dr Tescher said. The centre includes eight consultation rooms, a pathology room and treatment room and a lot of natural light, something the young entrepreneurs insisted on when buying the premises. Chantelle and Paul are hopeful that the therapeutic space they have created along with their efficient processes encourage people to visit the doctor even when they aren’t sick. “We think health care could and should be better and we want to focus on preventative health strategies,” Chantelle said.

Walker aims to step it up By JARROD POTTER LEADING her side on and off the field is the number one aim for Dandenong Stingrays captain Georgia Walker. Returning to the Stingrays Youth Girls Academy top mantle for a second year, Walker, 17, from Rye, is keen to push the side to new heights in the inaugural AFL Victoria Youth Girls Academy Challenge, starting Sunday 21 February. Walker, who will be supported by Stingrays vice-captains Jordy Allen and Taylah O’Hagan, did not expect to receive the job once again but was thrilled to get another chance to take the Academy reins. “I was actually really shocked at first when I was announced as captain, as I didn’t expect it,” Walker said. “I was captain last year as well, but I was so excited and absolutely honoured - especially in my last year of Youth Girls.” The Academy Challenge is a new direction for the Youth Girls program, moving into a homeand-away season for the first time in the history of the girls’ game. It’s a small step for year one, but Walker was thrilled to be part of the new-look competition and see what the Stingrays can do on the bigger stage. It’s so exciting - I can not wait,” Walker said. “Last year we only had the carnival with the couple of games on the weekend and that really took a toll on the body ... but for it to be similar

Dandenong captain Georgia Walker wants to lead the Stingrays in all facets for the Picture: JARROD POTTER upcoming Youth Girls Academy Challenge. 150153 to how the boys play and actually have the homeand-away games too. “Hopefully they’ll eventually be able to do the whole season like the boys and be able to play more games - especially coming in with the women’s comp - it’s exciting to see the game develop.” From pulling on the boots as an eager junior all the way to the peak of her junior football, the rapid growth in the game has astounded the fleetfooted midfielder.

That growth - especially from the juniors making their way in the game - has kept Walker on her toes as she knows last year’s standard just won’t cut it. “The talent that had come through this year, it’s stepped up immensely,” Walker said. “The fitness of the girls, the intensity, the ability to kick and the basic skills - it’s really exciting to see. “It keeps a lot of the older girls, the seniors now, to keep pushing ourselves as the younger

girls are so much better and pushes us to get better as well.” Walker encouraged local footy fans to get along to Frankston next week and support the side in its debut match this week, as the Stingrays are set to play a fast-paced and physical brand of football. But it’s not just the on-field success that drives her. Creating a culturally sound and inclusive club for junior girls or the graduating senior players alike is Walker’s aim. “Last year was the first time I’ve ever been captain in anything, so that was really cool, this year I want to have more confidence in myself being a leader,” Walker said. “When I first started as a 14 or 15 year old, I was quite intimidated by the older girls so I want to be able to bring the group cohesion and bring the group a lot closer together so the younger girls feel welcome. “Emphasis on the team spirit - I think that’s important, especially for the younger girls developing their football as they’ll be there for the next three or four years.” It starts a hectic year for Walker, who is set to play for Rye Youth Girls, attempt to make the Vic Country squad as well as get a few games for Seaford in the inaugural Women’s VFL competition. The Stingrays Academy starts its season on Sunday 21 February, at Frankston Oval at 10am, against Sandringham.

Penny Taylor is set to re-unite with the Phoenix Mercury in the up-coming WNBA season. 134249 Picture: JARROD POTTER

By JARROD POTTER MAKING her way back across the pond for another WNBA campaign, Dandenong Rangers’ great Penny Taylor will resume life in Phoenix after signing on for the coming season. Taylor, 34 who started life in basketball at Belgrave South Red Devils, has returned to the premier competition as she returned to her beloved Phoenix Mercury for a crack at a fourth WNBA championship. The Opals’ star swingman - who is set to play a massive role in Australia’s Olympic Games roster this year - will don the purple and orange for a 12th WNBA season. The two-time WNBA All-Star will re-unite with championship-winning team-mate Diana Taurasi and the tandem will light the court up according to the Phoenix’s management. “If Diana Taurasi is the heart of our franchise, Penny Taylor is the soul,” Mercury general manager Jim Pitman said on WNBA.com “Not only is she one of the greatest players in the history of the women’s game and one of the driving forces behind our three championships, she is a great team-mate, a leader, a calming force on the floor and in the locker room. “She has overcome injuries and setbacks, and she relentlessly persevered as the ultimate professional to get back on the court and help lead us to the title in 2014.” Taylor sits second on the franchise’s alltime list for games, points, assists and steals. Her short and sweet 2014/15 WNBL season - returning to play for the first time in a domestic season since 2002 with Dandenong - was capped off with selection in the WNBL All Star 5. Taylor won a FIBA World Championship gold medal with the Opals in 2006 and was named MVP of the tournament. She’s also a three-time WNBA champion and three-time all-star in addition to winning championships in her time in the Italian, Russian and Turkish leagues.

Brothers show their style NIMBLE swimmers from Oasis Otters Swimming Club excelled at last week’s state sprint championships. Champion brothers Hamed Afshin Azar and Sam Afshin Azar took on the best in the state at the Swimming Victoria Sprint Championships, held last weekend at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. One of the speedy Otters brothers made the podium with Hamed earning two medals at the meet. He was just edged into silver in the under 15 boys 50 metre backstroke by three-tenths of a second to Traralgon’s Locke DeGaris and had another strong finish to get a bronze in the 50m butterfly. Older brother Sam pushed hard for the under 17-18 boys 50m breaststroke, finishing seventh. The duo will be quick out of the blocks at the upcoming Oasis Otters Community Swimming Carnival, held on Saturday 5 March at Noble Park Aquatic Centre (NPAC). Sponsored by Oasis Otters Swimming Club and City of Greater Dandenong, the meet encourages swimmers from all backgrounds - whether swimming regularly, or just at school sports - to come along and race the region’s best in all disciplines across 25m and 50m events. Coxy’s big breakthrough By JARROD POTTER DDCA TURF 1 - ROUND 10 (Day 1) WHEN the highlight of the day happens in the opening overs, as it did for Springvale South, that can only point to a difficult day in the field. SPRINGVALE SOUTH v HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS The hosts never stood a chance as Heinz Southern Districts (7/256) batted out the day, thanks in part to an extraordinary second-wicket stand from Matt Cox (138) and Brad Downe (49). From the highs of getting Cobras’ opener Trevor Davies (0) out for a blob, the match soon spiralled out of control for the Bloods. Four first choice bowlers out of the equation - with Tim Ford, Malinga Bandara, Jackson Sketcher and Jarrod Armitage unavailable - left a heavy bowling burden on Nathan King (4/76), Matt Wetering (2/67) and the skipper Craig Slocombe (0/32). King stormed in with the new rock, shaking off the boiling-hot conditions to try and keep the Cobras’ second-wicket stand from blooming. But no matter what he did, Cox and Downe smashed apart anything thrown at them, particularly Cox as he hit his way back into form. After a number of starts and none particularly seized upon, the onus was put on the skipper by none other than himself. Flaying the Bloods - especially on the offside through the covers - Cox raced to his fourth DDCA century while Downe played a subdued role excellently, rotating the strike to leave Springvale South without many options. Finally an opportunity came as Downe hit out against King, but by then the damage was done. In the last 10 overs Cox, Michael Davies (15) and Ryan Davies (15no) started smacking the stuffing out of the weary bowlers. Cox would fall, but not after Heinz set 257 for

Shane Leonard (35) managed to get on the front foot. The reply was savage from the Ridges, especially import Kunal Kapoor (107no) who flayed a hellacious century off only 70 balls to set an outright target with a day remaining. PARKFIELD v BERWICK Bear-ly hanging on against Berwick (2/49), it took Parkfield’s (148) middle order to stir from hibernation to give Dunblane Road something to cheer about. A one-two punch from Jack Williams (4/33) and Jarrod Goodes (3/25) left the hosts in disarray - at one stage falling to 5/36 Matt Aslett (53) and Nilochana Perera (40) pushed the singles and capitalised on any Berwick error to push the run-rate along ... before Perera became Goodes’ next victim. The Berwick tandem would clean up the home-town Bears’ tail after 59 overs, but with something defendable on the board, Parkfield set to work making amends for a poor day’s batting. Two late wickets giving it a reason to smile about. VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 15 (Day 1) THE downward decline towards the end of the season might have begun, as Dandenong (191) valiantly battled in an up-hill fight. Facing top-of-the-ladder Fitzroy-Doncaster (0/45) is headache enough for most sides. That wasn’t bad enough though as the Panthers also need to look for outright victories - with the gap to the top-eight currently sitting at 10 points. It made the weekend particularly challenging at Shepley Oval and a tough task was made all the more difficult early as the skipper Tom Donnell (0) lost his pegs instantly, scarcely troubling the scorers. With Fitzroy-Doncaster’s man mountain Trent Lawford (3/57) bowling hand-grenades from his cannon-like arm, the Panthers’ top order had to brace itself for chaos. Brett Forsyth (49) countered the barrage with an onslaught of his own - picking off Lawford, Chris Moore (2/37) and Matthew Frith (1/23) as he got his eye in. But the problem plaguing Forsyth’s season to date - plenty of uncashed starts - continued as he

struck out against Steven Duckworth (2/40), the fifth time this season the Dandy opener has fallen in the 40s. Thankfully for Dandenong the next mainstay was ready to get stuck into the Lions. Star all-rounder James Nanopoulos (55) resumed the challenge Forsyth first undertook and struck his way into his second half ton of the season. The middle order folded around Nanopoulos as the side’s youth couldn’t cement themselves to the crease, but thankfully a wiser head was on his way. The renewed fight-back came from David Alleyne (32), who stuck fast to Nanopolous to add 47 for the sixth scalp. Nanopoulos held on as long as he could to guide the side towards 200 as some waging from James Wilcock (7no) put the last few scores onto the board. The Lions batted out the last 20 overs comfortably, which now leaves all of Saturday in the bank. It’s plennty of time to chase down the Panthers and all but lock in the minor premiership heading into the final round.

WNBL - ROUND 17 A DISASTROUS 40-point loss on the road to Townsville has put a dent in Dandenong’s momentum heading into the WNBL finals series. Closely contested through the first half, Dandenong’s resolve was shattered after the main break as Townsville unleashed an awe-inspiring 9-35 third quarter to emphatically snare the victory. The Fire took a clean sweep of the series in the 89-49 rampage over the Rangers, who were running on fumes after three road games in a week. Dandenong’s tall brigade was monstered defensively by the Fire’s four-and-five arsenal and the story wasn’t much better in their own half, shooting only 27 per cent from the floor. Opals tandem Suzy Batkovic (24 points, nine rebounds) and Cayla George (14 points, 17 rebounds) got it done on the scoreboard to wipe the Rangers out on their whirlwind trip to Queensland.

Former Ranger Natalie Novosel (20 points) finished the job for the Fire, giving the northerners a one-match break atop the WNBL ladder over Dandenong with a game in hand. The task at hand was made more difficult with Sara Blicavs (eight points) finding foul trouble to cap off a disastrous night for the visitors. Dandenong starters Steph Cumming (13 points) and Annalise Pickrel (12 points, 10 rebounds) led the green-and-gold offence on an off night across the board. There was one piece of good Dandenong news to come from the clash, first-choice centre Alex Bunton returned to playing duties and getting through five minutes in her first match since round eight. Dandenong remains second on the ladder following Perth’s shock loss to wooden-spooners Canberra - and now faces fourth placed SEQ Stars in the final clash of the home-and-away season from 5pm on Sunday.

Cougars rally in pre-season By JARROD POTTER SHAKING off the rust on its 2015 championship defence, Keysborough Cougars went through the ringer in an up-tempo pre-season clash against McKinnon. Held between the BIG V’s Cougars sides, the annual Cougar Cup was on the line at Springers Leisure Centre, giving the local fans plenty to cheer about on Saturday night. The three-clash showdown, won by the side with the most cumulative points across the fixtures, was retained by McKinnon but not after some impressive work from Keysborough. Showing how far the local BIG V side has progressed, Keysborough’s women - now coached by Scott Middleton - started the clash strongly to win by nine.

Despite a dogged effort, a complete mirror image of the first result faced the Cougars’ youth men, leaving the final clash a winner-takes-all battle between the Cougars’ combatants. Showcasing two massive boons to the Cougars premiership defence, Dandenong SEABL champion Calvin Enge has switched across to the blueand-silver for his first BIG V campaign. Coach Nathan Vogt has sized up the tall department and sought out more size under the ring. The Cougars are also trialling American import Aaron Abram from Oklahoma Baptist University, Keysborough had the arsenal necessary to take it up to McKinnon and will make a decision on him joining the roster before the season begins. While the gutsy Cougars’ effort wasn’t enough

to knock over the mighty visitors, falling just short in a nail-biting finale, there was plenty to be impressed about as the deep roster looked set to shine once again in 2016. There are changes to the championship team, which beat Western Port in a three-game BIG V Division 2 Men’s grand final series. The Cougars’ core remains pretty much untouched at Springers in 2016, but there are a few outs. They lost Andrew Lowe and Robert Ostojic to retirement while Malcolm Heard was unable to return for a second season as Keysborough’s import. The club’s senior single presentation will be held at the Clayton Bowls Club on Saturday 27 February from 7pm. with tickets available via the club.

New Dandenong Thunder forged in relegation storm THERE are two ways to handle relegation. It can batter and bruise your confidence, sending your club spiraling even further down the ranks. Or it can be a line in the sand and moved past in pursuit of greater ambitions. The latter is where Dandenong Thunder’s new-look side has set its sights this season. A devastating 2015 left the local side relegated from NPL to NPL2 East and with many from that side leaving the black-and-red, it forced the Thunder to rebuild entirely. Under new coach Huss Skenderovic, the Thunder has retooled the entire list and brought in a good mix of experience and youth alike. Former Adelaide and Melbourne A-League midfielder Kristian Sarkies leads a list of impressive ins for the Thunder. Also joining Dandenong in 2016 are Brandon Barnes, Nicholas Modaffari, Amir Osmancevic and new goalkeeper Fraser Maclaren add to the familiar faces in Brendan Elmazovski, Veton Korcari and Safa Faisal at George Andrews Reserve. While it’s a step-by-step process to move back into the top flight, Skenderovic and his charges brought an impressive attack to its final pre-season hit out on Saturday night. Facing NPL side FC Bulleen Lions, neither side could hit the scoreboard - remaining nil-all through the first half. A penalty strike from Thunder’s Osmancevic was saved by FC Bulleen - the best chance of either side before the break - but the home side managed to open the accounts first after the resumption. Dandenong broke the deadlock early in the second half with some turnover wizardry via Daniel Bennett to set up the goal. The Lions fought back to level the ledger but it took a bit of ageless Thunder wisdom and skill to get the side home. Korcari timed an exceptional header at the near post to beat the Lions’ keeper and take the Thunder’s first big scalp of 2016. It wasn’t a fluke win over a high-ranking side according to the coach, as wins like that are what Skenderovic thinks the side can achieve throughout the season.

It’s not about consolidation or sitting in the midst of the NPL2 East pack for the coach - he believes there’s only one place the Thunder should reside. “Dandenong Thunder is a big club and we know where it belongs and sometimes you take two steps back to go forward again,” Skenderovic said. “We’ve rebranded the whole club in regards to the football department and the coaching staff and the people we’re bringing here. “It’s exciting times for Australian football and also within Victoria and us being a good club, we’re not looking at it thinking we’ve been relegated. “We believe we’re an NPL team and that’s where we want to go back.” Off-field change has been important to the new campaign, with Skenderovic bringing his experience from the United Arab Emirates to the transitional group ahead of next week’s season launch. “It’s been a transition period obviously for the club moving forward and also for a new team and it has been a challenge,” Skenderovic said. “But at the same time a fruitful one as we’ve brought in some great characters and great individuals and you can see by the spirit and how we’ve built this team.” Skenderovic was also excited to see the Thunder clash with home-town rivals Dandenong City and Springvale White Eagles; one of the rare benefits of the relegation. “That’s the exciting part of it all - it’s going to be a real battle between this neck of the woods in the south east,” Skenderovic said. “But it’s about enjoyment, entertainment and people coming to local football and supporting it. “Dandenong Thunder, Dandenong City and Springvale White Eagles in a radius is something sort of similar to what you get in London and we’re excited by it.” Dandenong will host Nunawading City in NPL2 East’s round one on Saturday night while Springvale White Eagles hosts Goulburn Valley and Dandenong City is away at Murray.
