■ Strange behaviour alerts police to drug trafficker…
School drugs A MAN has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking after being caught with 900 prescription tranquilizer pills in a Dandenong North high school car park. Andrew Daniel Schulberg was searched by police in Lyndale Secondary College about 2.50pm on 6 March 2015 after reports of a male walking in the area “punching the air and acting strangely”, a court was told. Schulberg was in possession of 900 diazepam tablets in their original packaging, without a match-
ing prescription, police prosecutor Senior Constable Tracey Arnold told the court on 15 February. The accused admitted to police that he bought the drugs two days earlier at Dandenong railway station, presuming they were stolen goods. Magistrate Gerard Bryant quipped that police were unable to accept there was the “equivalent of Costco” selling drugs at the station. The accused claimed the drugs were for his personal use, though he didn’t have a prescription for diazepam.

Schulberg was also caught with a gram of cannabis in his jeans pocket by Dandenong Magistrates’ Court security officers on 11 November. On 8 January he was searched by police after being observed getting into a car without number plates in Potter Street, Dandenong. Two foils comprising one gram of heroin were found in his underwear. He was also in possession of a multi-tool pocket knife - which he said was for “work purposes” - and several foils of cannabis totalling

five grams which he dropped on the ground. Schulberg’s lawyer said there was no evidence that the accused was trying to sell the 900 tablets. “He was planning on taking them over a very long time.” The accused had been off drugs for five years after a previous recovery program. Mr Bryant ordered an assessment for a community corrections order including an “element of community work” and attendance at a drug awareness seminar.

Fluid police numbers on political front line By CASEY NEILL THE number of Greater Dandenong front-line police officers dropped by 21 between September and December last year, figures show. But Victoria Police has said the Police Service Area’s (PSA) staffing levels are normal. The Opposition’s police spokesman and Eastern Victoria Region MP Edward O’Donohue contacted the Journal last week after Parliamentary Secretary for Justice Ben Carroll visited Dandenong Police Station to meet new custody officers. “Whatever benefit is derived
from the custody officers will be offset by the loss of police,” he said. “Daniel Andrews’s failure to appropriately resource police has caused a reduction of front-line officers.” Mr O’Donohue provided quarterly Victoria Police statistics that showed the number of sworn fulltime equivalent police in the Greater Dandenong PSA dropped from 175 to 154 between September and December last year. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the force allocated resources at a divisional level, not a local level. “Dandenong is part of South-
ern Metro Division 3 which also includes Cardinia and Casey,” she said. “The number of positions in any area tends to fluctuate depending on movements and vacancies. “Dandenong currently have their normal staffing levels.” A spokesperson for Acting Police Minister Robin Scott said the State Government had not cut police numbers. They said there were 13,302 sworn full-time equivalent police officers in December last year, up almost 150 from September. Southern Metro has received
an extra 50 officers since October 2014, the spokesperson said. “This government supports police and Mr O’Donohue is scaremongering,” they said. “Our custody officers will enable more police to be redeployed to the front line - this policy is already having an impact. “We have funded almost 700 police personnel in our first year of government, including 400 custody officers, 109 PSOs, 62 transit police, 88 counterterrorism specialists and eight forensic analysts to help police crackdown on clandestine drug labs.”

A PIT bull has come to its owner’s rescue during a violent assault in a Dandenong home. The two victims heard a knock on the front door of their Cleeland Street unit while they were watching television about 5am on Tuesday 16 February. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis said one of them opened the door and saw two men. A man that the victim recognised forced his way inside and hit him with a star picket, causing minor injuries. Sen Const Jarvis said the victim then set his pit bull terrier onto his attacker and the dog bit his calf, causing extensive bleeding. The intruders fled into a waiting car with a woman behind the wheel. Anyone with information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Early-morning break-in A DANDENONG man disturbed an early-morning thief in his Market Street home. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Bree Jarvis said the thief entered the home via a front window about 4am on Monday 15 February. He stole one pack of 40 cigarettes and a keyring with house, garage and car keys. She said the victim woke up during the burglary and got out of bed in time to see the thief flee through the window. He was described as African in appearance, about 16 years old and 185 centimetres tall and was wearing a black T-shirt and black pants. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

DODGING spit, fists and verbal abuse is all in a day’s work for custody officer Ellen Rider. The Noble Park woman worked at Melbourne Remand Centre for the past 17 years before completing an accelerated custody officer training course and starting work at Dandenong Police Station a few weeks ago. There she processes and transports prisoners in order to free up police officers so they can spend more time solving crimes and liaising with the community. Dandenong is the busiest station for prisoners outside the metropolitan area. It can sleep 22 prisoners across seven cells - four at the station and three at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. An 80-metre underground tunnel links the two custody areas. It’s cold, stark and has a blue glow - and no end in sight when the solid entry door closes behind. Tunnel access is via an elevator with a lockable glass dividing door that holds three prisoners, handcuffed together, separate from the officers transporting them. It’s fitted with a CCTV camera and many more of them line the tunnel. Like the lift, they were new additions during recent renovations. Ms Rider and a second
to see how they’ll settle in. She recommended the job to people with some life experience and a thick skin - drugs and bravado make for unpredictable and sometimes aggressive prisoners. “You’ll get called stuff,” she said. “They’re not my friends so what they say to me doesn’t bother me.” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams and Parliamentary Secretary for Justice Ben Carroll visited Dandenong Police Station on Wednesday 17 February to see how Ms Rider was settling in. “I’m loving it,” she told them. “The other half’s never seen me so happy. “The staff really do a good job here and they’ve been very welcoming.” She said the job was challenging but the police had been supportive and appreciative. Greater Dandenong Inspector Bruce Kitchen said the full benefit of custody officers wouldn’t be felt until more were in place. “Internally the reaction’s very positive. They just want more of them quicker,” he said. He expects custody officers to help with police recruit retention rates by freeing officers to get out on the road and do the work they enjoy.

JACK JOHNSON IS THE AUTHOR OF WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES, A FASCINATING ACCOUNT OF GROWING UP IN DANDENONG, HIS YEARS TENDING TO THE CITY’S PIPES AND DRAINS AS A PLUMBER AND BRINGING UP A FAMILY WITH WIFE FRANCES IN THEIR BELOVED HOME IN MACPHERSON STREET.
Lining up to use a phone, imagine that! BECAUSE there was no public phone boxes in the street we would walk with mum to the old post office that had been built in 1879 to make a phone call. At the post office there was a group of numbered public phone booths installed along the verandah of the post office. Mum would book her call at the post office desk and when the call came through they would announce her name over the loud speaker and tell her which numbered box to go into. When the allotted time had passed the exchange operator would cut in and say ‘are you extending?’ and if she was, mum would have to put more coins into the phone.

When we moved to Cleeland Street the Monti family lived down the road from our house. Members of the family worked at the telephone exchange for many years. The youngest of them went to school with us at St Mary’s. How different it is today, when little
kids have their own mobile phones. These amazing little pieces of 21st century technology, most of them so small they fit into the hand of a third grader, can text messages, take photos, play games and watch television and have every ring tone, call sign and flashing light you could think of. That post office was the one of our early childhood, and at that time the postmaster lived in the residence. In later years the residence was used to enlarge the post office and the postmasters lived in private homes. This was the same triangular piece of land next to the town hall on which the present post office building stands today. It is of concrete slab construction as
are most of the commercial buildings of today. For heating, most houses only had open wood fires and some families did part of their cooking on them. We cooked toast on ours with a long wire fork. Some houses has an iron frame and hook which swung from the inside of the fireplace on which they hung a cast-iron kettle or boiler. We did not have one of these frames, but we did have a couple of cast-iron kettles and a boiler which sat on the open fire to boil water when the kitchen wood stove was not burning. It was for the wood stoves that we had to split the large logs to fit into the small fire boxes.
Some of the larger houses and hotels had cast-iron stoves which had double ovens and two fireboxes usually fired by coke. On the end of some there was a built-in hot water boiler with a brass outlet tap like a water tank. Some years later, after the war, when working with CL Godfrey, I would install many AGA and Rayburn slow combustion stoves on farmhouses around the district. Those stoves had hot water boilers built into them to which we connected an insulated hot water cylinder usually on a stand in the laundry or on the farmhouse verandah.

24 hours in Greater Dandenong. Melbourne water spokesman Paul Pretto said the water authority’s drainage system had “coped well” with the millions of litres that fell in Melbourne within a matter of hours. “No urban drainage system in the world could have reasonably swallowed the intense rainfall Melbourne experienced on 4 and 5 February” Melbourne Water said in a statement. However Dandenong-based researcher Alan Hood said almost twice as much rain fell in parts of eastern Melbourne in two days in 1934. “So talk about one in 100 or one in 500 year flood is nonsense.”
LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 17 February 1915 Recruiting Recruiting Sergeant Pickett reports everything going favourably with recruiting in the shire. Up to the present, 33 men have been accepted for active service and the sergeant is confident that within the course of a few days he will be able to announce that the Dandenong Shire has supplied its quota of 69 to the new army. This reflects great credit on the shire, considering how it has been drained of suitable men during the past year. 50 years ago 24 February 1966 School is proud of its Students Dandenong High School is proud of its students, particularly the 67
successful 1965 matriculants. Eighteen obtained first class honors, 65 second class honors. To assist in school organisation, and in an effort to bring parents into close touch with the school problems, Dandenong High School in 1966 is substituting junior and senior assemblies for the traditional end of year speech nights. The first of these will be held on Wednesday February 23 at 8pm. All students in form 1 to 11 are invited to attend, and the school urges all parents of students in these forms to be present. The first part of the evening will be used for the presentation of awards to those students who achieved creditable scholastic results while in forms 1 and 11 in 1965. Winners of junior scholarships

The school now has a new computer room as part of a $200,000 upgrade last year, much to the delight of principal Kevin McKay and assistant principal Mrs Geraldine McKenzie. The new room housed 15 IBM compatible multi-media computers costing about $40,000, Mrs McKenzie said. There are also four laptops for the use of staff, and a laser printer.

ST COLUMBA’S Uniting Church faces a possible $1 million damage bill from a suspicious fire on 17 February. It was still hoped that the main worship area could be used with generated power, he said. “It’s a devastating experience for the congregation.” Several congregations meet at the church, some of whom have assembled in the now-unusable recreational hall. Drive against sky rail By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS RESIDENTS in Douglas Street, Noble Park, are mobilising against the possible destruction of nearby parkland by the proposed sky rail project. Eric D’Cruz’s property is several hundred metres west of the Chandler Road level crossing, which is one of nine to be removed by the State Government’s planned elevated Dandenong-Caulfield rail line. “I’ll fight it to the end,” the quietly spoken man said as he prepares to distribute No Skyrails petitions, posters and pamphlets. For the past 24 years he’s enjoyed a vista of open woodland comprising tall red river gums - though it is often scythed by hurtling trains about 20 metres from his front door. He’s got used to the train noise but is “shocked and in disbelief” by the prospect of a nine-metre tall sky bridge that will replace level crossings but also his view - and indeed some of those mature trees. It’s not what he asked for, nor what he expected. Mr D’Cruz thought the tracks would be built under Noble Park’s three level crossings. His neighbour Graham Ambrose was first swayed toward supporting the project by a visiting Level Crossing Removal Authority doorknocker who talked “some nice pie in the sky”. Now he’s worried about the impact of “big drilling” metres from his house during construction and graffiti and vagrants that may blight his street. “I’m prepared to be a part of a protest action.” They and other neighbours met with state opposition leader Matthew Guy and Liberal Upper House MPs David Davis and Gordon Rich Phillips, as well as No Skyrails action group organisers in the street on 17 February.
Railing against sky rail are Eric D'Cruz, David Davis, Charles Beaucassin, Gordon RichPhillips, Graham Ambrose, Krishna Jadav, Matthew Guy and Jian Song. 150289
Picture: GARY SISSONS Mr Guy was impressed by Corrigan Road resident Chris Papapavlou’s pithy critique of sky rail in last week’s Journal “you can’t polish a turd”. “You won quote of the year,” Mr Guy told the resident. “They’re up in arms because they’re misled. I don’t think that will go away,” Mr Guy said, noting the Labor Party lost nearby seats when it broke a promise for an untolled Scoresby Freeway, which is now the tollway Eastlink. Publicly-released illustrations of a two-track sky rail did not depict the true impact of three or four tracks, he said. “It’s far wider than what the government is telling residents. It is consistently lying to residents. “For (Premier) Daniel Andrews to say people were aware of this concept before the election is untrue - it’s treating people with contempt. “He wasn’t saying there would be a sky rail several kilometres long.”
On Saturday, the action group made its voice heard at a community meeting held by the Level Crossing Removal Authority in Noble Park. There was talk of possible community legal action against the project. No Skyrails member Dianne Hunt said the movement was gathering momentum along the rail corridor - 4000 petition signatures, more than 800 Facebook likes and more than 1800 website views in three hours. “We want the government to stop and get back to consulting.” The government’s own documents warned that elevated rail was a “secondrate option”, Ms Hunt said. A 2014 Office of the Victorian Government Architect paper titled Level Crossing Removals: Lessons Learned stated that elevated rail or road was “not a preferred solution”. It would impact on “visual amenity, permeability, viability of activity areas,
value of land and appetite for future development”. “They often provide a cheaper solution but a poorer outcome and therefore a false economy. “Don’t ignore the broader costs and benefits of the project and long-term legacy of a once-in-a-generation infrastructure intervention.” Level Crossing Removal Authority chief executive Kevin Devlin said the “modern elevated design” was selected because “we believe it is the best way to remove these level crossings and creates the best urban design outcomes”. “Modelling by acoustic experts has identified that the proposed design will result in an overall decrease in noise compared to the current rail line. “We will be working one-on-one with residents who back on to the rail line and will be looking at privacy and noise screening as well as vegetation and fence improvements.”

Parking meter fees reduced PARKING meter fees in Warwick Avenue, Springvale, were reduced by Greater Dandenong Council from Tuesday. From 9am parking limits were increased from two to three hours and charges have dropped to a maximum of $1 for three hours. Last month Greater Dandenong councillors reported that drivers had all but deserted the car park since $1.20-an-hour parking meters were introduced late last year. Mayor Heang Tak said the council had responded to traders’ concerns. “We have listened to traders’ issues and have acted quickly to address them. “These particular car parks have been underutilised since the parking meters were introduced, so we hope this will help rectify this situation.” Cr Tak said the council’s parking strategy was based on “internationally recognised best practice principles”. This included charging a “fair market price” for parking. “Council’s action on this occasion demonstrates our commitment to those principles,” Cr Tak said. New signs will be installed at the car parks to notify drivers of the changes.

Servo crash man is fined AN ALCOHOL-affected unlicensed driver has claimed he fled from a Dandenong service station to find an interpreter after reversing his car into a diesel pump. The Sri Lankan asylum seeker, 35, had unsuccessfully tried to communicate with the servo attendant - despite a language barrier - soon after crashing into the pump about 7am on 2 June, a court was told. The “frustrated” and “aggressive” accused then left the Princes Highway servo on foot, police prosecutor Senior Constable Tracey Arnold said. A friend who remained at the scene called the accused on behalf of police. With the help of a Tamil interpreter, the accused agreed to submit to a breath test and recorded a reading of 0.109 -
more than twice the legal limit. The man told police he’d drunk “two large high-strength beers”. A defence lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 15 February that the man had never held a Victorian driver’s licence since arriving as an asylum seeker in 2012. The man was unaware he needed a local licence when staying in Australia for more than three months, the lawyer said. The lawyer said the Tamil man had left the servo to seek help from an interpreter out of frustration with the Sinhalesespeaking attendant. Magistrate Gerard Bryant said the accused’s alcohol impairment was demonstrated - and aggravated - by his collision with a diesel pump.

Mr Bryant appreciated the man had a “difficult life” as a “recently arrived refugee from war-torn Sri Lanka” with a “limited command” of English. “The reason you have to get a licence you come to Australia is to demonstrate you have an understanding of our road laws which may be different generally from the road rules in your country of origin. “You’re also required to demonstrate you can drive a car competently so you’re not to be a risk to yourself, your passengers and everyone else on the road.” The man must wait 12 months, complete a drink-driving awareness course and apply to the court before trying for a licence. He was convicted and fined $800.

THIEVES stole more than $50,000 in rare military-grade electric bikes from a Springvale store. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Andrew Paternott said the burglary occurred at Stealth Electric Bikes on Princes Highway about 5.30am on Tuesday 9 February. He said three thieves used a
jemmy bar to force open a security screen on a side window. Sen Const Paternott said they stole five bikes, valued at $10,000 each and usually bought by military agencies for their speed and silence. The three thieves were wearing balaclavas or ski masks, gloves, and back packs. One was about 190 centi-
metres tall with a thin build, a light-coloured UFC singlet and light-coloured cargo shorts. Another was about 180cm tall with a medium build and dark clothing, and the third was about 170cm tall with a medium build, a light-coloured jacket and blue jeans. Anyone with information should phone Sen Const Paternott on 9767 7487.

Back in time By CASEY NEILL TWO Springvale sisters are helping Victoria’s Vietnamese community mark a major milestone. Thao Phuong Le, 21, and Xuan Phung Le, 20, appear in a photograph on display at the Vietnamese in Australia: 40 Years of Settlement exhibition. It opened at the Immigration Museum in Melbourne in November and marks four decades since thousands of Vietnamese people started landing in Australia in 1975 after the Vietnam War. The organisers want the migrants’ descendants to understand their roots and the wider community to understand their stories. Thao and Xuan became involved through volunteer work with the Dual Identity Leadership Program, a Vietnamese Community Australia - Victorian Chapter initiative. “We’ve graduated from the leadership program but we’re still involved with the community,” Thao said. They helped out with the Tet Festival for Vietnamese New Year and a soup kitchen project. “We were bringing Vietnamese cuisine to the homeless,” Xuan said. An Immigration Museum photographer captured the image of the sisters that appears in the exhibition. They’re standing in front of a stained glass window in Monash University’s Robert Blackwood Hall.
Xuan Phung Le, 20, and Thao Phuong Le, 21, with their Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS photograph. 148312 Thao finished a Bachelor of Science majoring in physics and mathematics at the university last year and this year moved on to a masters of physics with plans to complete a PhD in the field. Xuan is half way through a double degree in science and biomedical science. “Our family’s always been a sciency family,” Xuan said. Their parents fled from Vietnam after the war. “They went by boat up to Hong Kong and from there they got to a refugee camp,” Thao said. “They went to the Philippines, where I was born, and
after that they moved over to here.” Springvale was their first home and where the sisters have grown up. “I never felt like the odd one out,” Xuan said. They planned to visit the exhibition as a family, though the gravity of the milestone hadn’t hit home. “I think it will be important in retrospect,” Thao said. Vietnamese in Australia: 40 Years of Settlement is on display until 30 June at the Immigration Museum, 400 Flinders Street, Melbourne. Phone 13 11 02 for more information.

Bus petition port Victoria (PTV) in early January to discuss how to further improve the proposed routes. Members said the buses would bypass key infrastructure, including shopping centres and community hubs, and would leave out residential areas south of Keylana Drive and Westwood Boulevard. “And there is no future infrastructure growth factored into the route,” KSAG spokeswoman Nina Kelly said. “The route will not be rolled out until the second half of 2016. “By that time the proposed Woolworths on Hutton Road
will be near completion and there will be no bus within 850 metres.” Ms Kelly said buses would run every 40 minutes during the day and every 60 minutes after 7pm. “Research provided to us shows a direct route with higher frequency - every 20 minutes has greater patronage,” she said. “We believe people will still use their car to get to railway stations with this inadequate frequency.” Ms Kelly said the Keysborough community had been fighting for the bus extension for eight years.
Multiple charges for speedster A SPRINGVALE South disqualified driver will be charged with speeding and drink driving in Springvale. Casey Highway Patrol officers were targeting intentional high-risk driving through Operation Sumatra when they allegedly saw the 26-year-old man travelling east along Princes
Highway about 1.20am on Saturday 13 February. Officers said they clocked a blue Ford sedan travelling at 171km/h in an 80km/h zone, and intercepted it in a nearby hotel car-park. They said the driver returned a positive preliminary breath test and they impounded the car
at a cost of $917. Police took the driver back to the station where he allegedly blew 0.178 - more than three times the legal limit. The man will face charges of driving at a dangerous speed, drink driving and driving while disqualified.

PARLIAMENT has received 465 signatures asking for better bus service in Keysborough and Dandenong South. On 11 February Keysborough MP Martin Pakula described the need as “urgent” when he presented the Keysborough South Action Group (KSAG) petition requesting additional routes and frequency in both suburbs. Late last year Public Transport Victoria (PTV) presented proposed new routes to service Keysborough South but campaigners said they had serious flaws. KSAG met with Public Trans-

Car workers’ rail training By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A TRAINING centre to reskill retrenched automotive workers will be established at Chisholm Institute as part of the State Government’s skyrail project. Premier Daniel Andrews announced a New Employment Exchange and Training (NEXT) centre as a partnership with the TAFE on Tuesday 16 February It is part of the $1.6 billion skyrail project that will remove nine level crossings between Caulfield and Dandenong, including three in Noble Park. The government claims the project will create 2000 jobs including at least 200 for apprentices and graduate engineers. It was announced that the nine-metre tall rail sections
will be constructed from prefabricated beams that will be “pieced together over the busy rail line as it continues to run”. “Removing level crossings using a modern elevated design means the trains keep running and the roads keep flowing saving passengers and drivers the chaos of major shut-downs on our busiest rail line,” Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said. The centre will include a dedicated classroom and training space, a rail training centre and on-the-job training on the skyrail project. The program will help reskill people who are in “industries in decline” and teach students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds, ac-
cording to a government statement. Senior high school students and pre-apprentices can apply for access to construction-based work projects and supervised work experience. The program will also provide year 10, 11 and 12 students from local schools and pre-apprentices with access to construction-based work projects and supervised work experience. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the initiative removed some of the state’s most dangerous, congested level crossings and guaranteed “the next generation of Victorians get the skills they need”. The skyrail is expected to be completed in 2018.
Law review to clear the way ment review underway would clear things up and urged people to share their ideas on possible changes. Ms Hutchins said ideas already submitted include simplifying electoral structures, increasing mayoral authority, and more community input into decision-making. “This review provides us with the opportunity to refresh the role of local government in
Victoria,” she said. The Dandenong forum will take place from 10am to noon on Wednesday 2 March at Drum Theatre, corner Walker and Lonsdale streets, Dandenong. Ms Hutchins called on Victorians to share ideas, provide feedback and take polls about ideas already submitted to the Act Review on www.yourcouncilyourcommunity.vic.gov.au.

DANDENONG will host a forum to help to shape a council shake-up. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said the Local Government Act had been amended many times. “The 1989 Act is outdated and no longer provides clarity on the role of councils,” she said. She said the State Govern-

POLICE are searching for a man who broke into a Dandenong South food outlet from the roof and stole a set of keys. But the keys were only to an outside toilet. Detectives have released CCTV images of the man who removed roof tiles to get inside the Frankston-Dandenong Road store about 3.05am on Monday 25 January. The man is described as being aged in his late 30s to early 40s with dark facial hair.
If you couldn’t access government funding for a course and you have a genuine need for retraining, you may now be eligible for a new funding exemption at Chisholm. This is only available at TAFE.
He was wearing a grey and black jumper, dark pants, a red baseball cap and gloves at the time of the incident. Police believe another person was also involved with the theft because a foot was seen in the footage pushing the plaster of the roof down while the burglar was inside. Anyone with information about the incident or anyone who can identify the man is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or make a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… A MAN was happy to debate his own “alcoholism” with a magistrate in Dandenong recently. He said he had “helped” his “alcoholic” partner by sharing three bottles of wine that she brought home one night. “She could drink the three bottles herself. I stupidly thought I could help her like that.” The magistrate questioned the man’s selflessness. The man told the court that he was not an alcoholic though he attended alcohol counselling and AA meetings. “What’s AA stand for?” the magistrate asked the accused. “If you don’t identify yourself as an alcoholic why do you go Alcoholics Anonymous?” The accused wore a neck brace, which he told the court was due to a drunken car accident on private property. He had “skolled” a bottle of Southern Comfort bourbon after a family argument, he told the court.
“Yes it’s extremely excessive. I felt I had my heart ripped out and jumped on.” The man still argued that his GP thought his drinking was “not that bad”. SOMEONE needs to take their breakfast cereal a little less seriously. A Doveton man stood accused at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court of punching his partner in the mouth over an argument about sharing Coco Pops. Facing a string of outstanding arrest warrants, the man however wanted to “get his life sorted” and turned himself in at Endeavour Hills police station, the court was told. The ice use - which had coincided with his offending - had ceased for the past 10 months. The magistrate was impressed with the man staying out of trouble for nearly a year and prepared to go back into remand by turning himself in.
The man was put on a community corrections order to support his continuing rehab. A JOURNAL reporter drew the attention of metro paparazzi at Dandenong court house. Covering a high-profile greyhound live-baiting trial, the reporter was flanked by rapidly approaching photographers snapping their cameras as he left the building. The reporter - who by the way is no fan of the dishlickers - did his best to smile under duress and inform the excitable togs he was not a greyhound trainer. THE Journal team’s thoughts are with Don Cameron and his family as he starts his battle with cancer. The Cornerstone Contact Centre co-ordinator said his church and community were lending support. “I think I’m the most prayed-for person in Melbourne. I cut my hair short last Monday

to impress my wife - and it did.” ABOUT 70 people joined Greater Dandenong Living Treasure Bill Warner to celebrate his 90th birthday. The bash was held at the Uniting Church he has attended since he was four years old and his partner Eleonora and her family prepared the food. The former councillor received “lovely cards” and champagne, wine and spirits. “Whenever you drop by, you can be assured there will always be a drink,” he said. WHEN is a car theft not a car theft? When the thief makes off with a set of number plates. Inspector Bruce Kitchen said about half of car thefts registered in his area were actually thefts of two matching plates. He spruiked the benefits of “shatter plates” used in the US and Canada that break when thieves try to remove them, but conceded the cost could prevent their introduction in Australia. THE Monash Health Seekers and Asylum Seeker Alliance will vie for the second-annual Seeker Cup in a Twenty20 cricket match this, Sunday 28 February. The Monash side won last year’s contest on the final ball so expect a fierce battle from 11am to 4pm at Oval 3, Greaves Reserve, Dandenong. CHARITY collectors are needed to rattle tins in Noble Park North on Saturday 5 March. It has joined forces with Urbanedge and Eight Homes to bring an even more diverse offering of homes to their rapidly expanding customer base. Established more than 30 years ago, the Burbank Group is comprised of awardwinning builder Burbank Homes and a number of subsidiary companies covering the full spectrum of building services including land development, finance, self-storage, property maintenance and repairs, electrical, plumbing, software development and media production. Urbanedge and Eight Homes are both award winning builders that, over the past 12 years, have established themselves as trusted businesses in the market. Eight Homes, in just its third year of operation, has become a household name in Melbourne for easy, modern and affordable new homes. Urbanedge is a leader in architecturally designed homes for the upper-end of the new home market. “We’re absolutely thrilled to enter into this new partnership with Urbanedge and Eight Homes,” Burbank’s managing director Jarrod Sanfilippo said. “Until now, Burbank Homes has been the home building company under the Burbank Group umbrella, and it’s very exciting to add two more building companies to the mix. “At Burbank, we pride ourselves on offering a wide range of housing options and now, by combining the three companies, we will have a product mix that is able to service all segments of the new home market,” Jarrod said. Urbanedge Homes and Eight Homes director Steve Maher is equally excited
JARROD AND STEVE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES. about the possibilities. “In today’s very competitive market, I’m really excited about this strategic move for the group. “We will have three very clear brand positions in the market, each with distinct competitive advantages which will be clear for customers.” “I look forward to continuing to do what I love most, which is to develop new, innovative ways to serve our customers and give greater opportunities to the loyal and fantastic staff we have across both businesses. NEW HOMES & LAND
HIGH STYLE HAMPTON THE Hampton offers functionality like no other. It is cleverly designed to provide room to accommodate large crowds and savvy enough to provide privacy to the rest. With its striking light fitting and scene-stealing bulkhead ceiling, there’s no denying the kitchen is at the very heart of the Hampton 262 by Kialla Homes, as displayed at Timbertop Estate, Officer. Alternatively, homebuyers have the option to include a butler’s pantry or use the alfresco area as a rumpus room instead for more indoor family space. “It is this versatility that makes the Hampton perfect for couples, families and empty nesters, Kialla Homes general manager,” Danny Muller said. There are three floorplan variations available or buyers can customise the home to suit their individual needs. The Hampton, which includes a theatre room, study and three spacious bedrooms, including the main with en suite and a large walk-in wardrobe, can also be fine-tuned to suit the size and shape of individual blocks of land. “Areas can be zoned off if there are only two people in the house at any one time, but it can also comfortably accommodate family and house guests,” Danny said. Visit the Hampton 262 by Kialla Homes at Timbertop Estate, Clovelly Way, Officer, from Saturday to Wednesday, noon until 5pm. Kialla Homes, 5941 3996 or Kiallahomes. com.au

NAMED for City of Greater Dandenong sports super-fan, Dandenong Thunder and Dandenong City are set to battle it out on the soccer pitch for the newly announced Jim Memeti Cup. Paying tribute to councillor Jim Memeti and his great passion for promoting local sporting clubs and causes, the FFV NPL2 East pair thought it fitting to name the trophy after the Red Gum Ward councillor. Cr Memeti was humbled by the clubs naming the Dandenong derby cup in his honour and said it was something that never crossed his mind. “(The clubs) are happy that I’ve committed so much to help at grass-roots football,” Cr Memeti said. “I just feel it’s part of my job - I never set out to do things to
have things named after me.” Thunder and City are part of the region’s overwhelming love for the round-ball game - with more Greater Dandenong clubs registered with Football Federation Victoria than any other municipality in the state. With the ever-growing love of sport in the area, Cr Memeti wants to see players of all ages feature in Greater Dandenong sports community and get a chance to shine on and off the field. “I’ve had some opportunity to lay sport when I was young and I believe every kid should have that,” Cr Memeti said. “If they want to play at the highest level they should have that chance. “I’m passionate about sport and youth in sport and that’s what it’s all about - to make a difference.“

Hair away charity day By CASEY NEILL A HAIR-RAISING event will return to Dandenong next month. Colin Gibbons’s World’s Greatest Shave event at the Dandenong Workers Social Club last March attracted 65 people and raised more than $3000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. He’ll do it all again from 1pm to 3pm on Sunday 13 March and hopes to donate even more cash. “Hopefully this year we can triple or double the money,” he said. The Dandenong man lost a lung to cancer 15 years ago and last year gave up his hair to help others who have been affected by the disease. His daughter Yao, then 17, shaved her hair last year and will return with hair colour in hand to help out. Dandenong barber Ian Bray will again
donate his services and “the club is 110 per cent behind us”. “They’ve even asked for T-shirts for the staff to wear on that day,” Mr Gibbons said. There’ll be a barbecue, a bar staff member will provide music and raffle prizes include scotch, a soft toy white tiger and a guitar. “We want to make it a family day. Get down there and have some fun,” he said. More than 31 Australians are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma every day and an Australian will lose their life to blood cancer every two hours. The Leukaemia Foundation funds research and free support for blood cancer sufferers and their families. Dandenong Workers Social Club is at 48 Wedge Street, Dandenong. Call Mr Gibbons on 0431 153 122 or visit www.worldsgreatestshave.com.au to get involved.

IN BRIEF Cultural guidance A NEW guide to the diverse Indian culture is tackling community prejudice and conflict. The Federation of Indian Origin Multi-Faith Organisations (FIMO) launched The Indian Interfaith Guide at Museum India in Dandenong on 7 February. It covers social norms and practices of various faiths and is designed to help the courts, community organisations, individuals and others to proactively address potential causes of conflict, difference and prejudice. The Confederation of Indian Australian Association (CIAA) joined FIMO in hosting the launch event which also celebrated Australia Day and Indian Republic Day. FIMO founder and trustee, CIAA chair and Australian Multicultural Council member Vasan Srinivasan was the evening’s MC and said Victoria had a proud multicultural history. “It is incumbent upon all Victorians to protect this important legacy, built up over many generations,” he said. “During internationally challenging times, there is an additional duty to understand the people with whom we share this country.” The State Government’s Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship (OMAC) funded the guide, which FIMO created with community input. Limited hard copies are available from Museum India and a flipbook version will be online at fimo.org.au.
Awareness age GREATER Dandenong residents can help to shape the future of aged care in their own back yard and beyond. Uniting AgeWell, which has a site in Noble Park, is establishing the AgeWell Community Advisory Committee (ACAC) with community members from Victoria and Tasmania. Uniting AgeWell board chairman The Reverend Allan Thompson said it would be one of the first in the aged care sector. “We want to hear first-hand the concerns, aspirations and ideas of the community,” he said. “It’s through these insights we will ensure our services continue to support people to age well and have confidence in the quality of care and services they receive.” The volunteer committee will meet quarterly from July, receive training and be reimbursed for transport expenses to attend meetings. Call Nickie Arthur on 0437 248 672 or visit unitingagewell.or. Expressions of interest close on 29 February.
Medical theft

PARAMEDICS treating an elderly man in Dandenong have had medical equipment stolen. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives said the theft occurred in Curtin Crescent about 3am on Thursday 11 February. A witness reported seeing a man approach the side of the ambulance, pick up a medical bag and run. They described the thief as Caucasian, aged in his late teens to early twenties, and about 168 centimetres tall with a slim build and brown hair. He was wearing a grey hoodie and lightcoloured shorts.

Fair share of support By CASEY NEILL SUPPORT is the secret to Beverley and Frank Aarons’s 60-year marriage. “He looks after me, I suppose, and he’s always there,” Bev said when asked what she liked most about her husband. Frank’s answer? “’Cause she argues with me all the time,” he said. “We’re always there for one another.” The Noble Park couple’s diamond anniversary celebrations in December included a trip to Albury with their daughters and grandchildren to play the pokies. “We go over there for breakfast and we have lunch, then we have dinner,” Bev said. “We play the pokies, we meet a lot of people we know, we listen to the bands. “We have a wonderful time.” Bev, 80, and Frank, 85, met the same way as many couples of their generation. “We used to go dancing Sunday night,” Frank said. “Opposite the Prahran Market they use to have a dance every Sunday night. “The first night we met, I then didn’t see her for 12 months. “Then we went to the St Kilda Town Hall dance and we met again.” Frank was a featherweight boxer at
Frank and Bev Aarons on their wedding day.
Frank and Beverley Aarons prepare to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. 148324 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS the time - he won 30 of his 38 appearances - and on their first date took Bev to watch a bout at Festival Hall. “He was going to take me out on a Friday night. We got on a tram - no car - and we got to town,” she said. “I thought we were going to the pictures, and we ended up going to Festival Hall.” Why did he decide boxing would make a good first date? “Because he’s a very selfish man. He didn’t give any thought to where
I’d like to go, he just took me where he wanted to go,” Bev said. She was 15 when they met. “We got married on the 17 December and I was 21 in the April, so I was a child bride,” she said. The ceremony was at St Matthew’s Church in Prahran and Bev’s mum hosted the reception. “We had to have it at home. Nobody had any money in them days to have flash weddings,” Frank said. “We had 60 or 70 people at her
mum’s place and we had a good time. “We didn’t go on a honeymoon. We bought a house.” It cost them £2150. “Six years ago it went for over $1 million,” he said. Frank’s boxing career ended following a motorbike crash that nearly killed him. “I was coming home from her place after training and a drunk come out of St Edgars Road, Prahran,” he said. “He broke every bone in the left
side of my body. “I made a comeback 12 months later but got a pain in my stomach. “It was a duodenal ulcer. My doctor said to me ‘if you fight again you’re going to get killed. If somebody hits you, that’s it’. “So I gave it away and started training greyhounds. “I had the heaviest greyhound in Victoria, Jungle Bid. He was like a pony, he was.” Bev and Frank are number one members at Sandown Greyhounds, and used to live nearby. “We lived a couple of years up at Upper Ferntree Gully. It was beautiful up there, fresh air,” Frank said. “It was too quiet for her.” They’ve lived in Noble Park for the past 10 years. “I’ve got two lovely daughters and four lovely grandchildren,” Bev said.
Introducing your
School Principal What makes a great Christian school? For me, a great school is one in which children are given opportunity - the opportunity to learn, develop their faith, think, serve, grow and excel. To do this, they need three things - the desire to discover and develop their God given gifts and talents, the skills and courage to use them, and the support from school and home to have a go. This is Maranatha Christian School – a genuine Christian learning community with a long history of developing Christian leaders in our community.
Established in 1919, Dandenong High School is one of the oldest, largest and most culturally diverse Secondary schools in the state. During the past 5 years the school has undergone a period of intense change and redevelopment including a merge of 3 schools, the development of an innovative, collaborative learning model, the creation of a unique house structure and is nearing completion of Stage 3 of a 45 million dollar building project.

The curriculum is based on the principles of direct instruction, inquiry and discovery and we have an extensive, individualised Senior Studies program that provides the students with a wide range of pathways options. The school also has a strong student leadership program, a range of sporting and extracurricular activities and has achieved great success in the Performing and visual arts. I am incredibly proud to be the leader of such a unique and dynamic learning community and would encourage you to visit our website or contact the school to arrange a tour.
1217238-EB08-16
The school has successfully maintained a balance between tradition and innovation and our vision is to create an environment where all students can achieve success. In order to foster a real sense of belonging and connection to the school students are grouped in 7 Houses with 300 students from Years 7 - 12 in each House, a leadership team of 4 and 25 staff. Students learn in groups of 50 with a team of 3 teachers in architecturally designed, and technology rich learning spaces and learning is personalised to meet each students need.
Using a model of Christ centred education within a safe and honouring environment, Maranatha seeks to inspire children to think Christianly about the world, and so use their God given gifts and talents for the benefit of others. We do this by employing talented Christian teachers who are highly qualified and well regarded educators with the ability to build quality relationships with students. To be a student at Maranatha means to access opportunity through participation in a rigorous, technologically rich and engaging curriculum, an extensive local and international service program and a wide range of co-curricular activities. At Maranatha Christian School children are encouraged, challenged, and supported to become good decision-makers, responsible global citizens and lifelong learners.

I feel most privileged to be the principal of this wonderful school. I have been a school principal for more than 30 years. In 1990, I was appointed to the position of principal of a new school to be opened at the start of 1991 – Thomas Mitchell Primary School. This school has grown from 286 students when it started to around 800 students in 2015. There have been many significant changes at Thomas Mitchell in the past 24 years. Our community has evolved into a highly multicultural, complex and exciting learning environment. While we concentrate on teaching literacy and numeracy, we greatly value the cultures and languages of the 70+ nationalities represented at the school. Parents and children are encouraged to value their ‘mother tongue’ language and culture at home while learning English at school. All students learn an Asian language at school – Mandarin or Indonesian, and participate in Asian studies to prepare them for the future. Sports and the Arts – Visual Arts and Performing Arts, Science and History are all part of the complex curriculum now taught at school. Thomas Mitchell is one of only 20 schools in Victoria to be a fully accredited school with the Council of International Schools. This accreditation commits the school to continuous, rigorous improvement. Our parent community is very supportive of our dedicated staff. Parents are aspirational for their children, but reasonable and eager to help. My great joy as principal is to speak to the kids each day. To see their smiling, happy faces as they arrive at school. To hear about and share the things that excite them. It makes me come to school each day!

Stamp of approval for world-first roll innovation By CASEY NEILL KINETIC Elements is turning around its fortunes with world-first rolls. The Noble Park North manufacturer will use a $1 million Accelerating Commercialisation grant for equipment to make textured titanium rolls for the printing and packaging industries. Kinetic Elements managing director Alex Engel said the Federal Government Entrepreneurs’ Programme grant would “make us a global player” and “is going to be good for the country, really”. “We’ve been suffering a lot from cheap Chinese imports, so this new technology will allow us to compete with that,” he said. “But more than that, it will open up OEM (original equipment manufacturer) markets for us. “They’re much more environmentally friendly they’re fully recyclable, cheaper to produce, they improve the quality. “It’s really win, win, win all round.” Mr Engel said the new equipment should be up and running next year and in the long-term would boost its 30-employee workforce. Laserlife has been in Noble Park North for 10 years and in business since 1968, and con-
ducted the research and development for the rolls. “But once we got the patents we thought we should commercialise it under a new entity,” Mr Engel said. “That’s where Kinetic Elements came from.” Assistant Innovation Minister Wyatt Roy and Bruce Liberal candidate Helen Kroger toured the plant on 12 February. “Kinetic Elements has used innovation to stay ahead of the curb and develop this worldfirst technology,” Mr Roy said. “Through this exciting project, there is the potential for 18 new high-skill jobs to be created in the local area. “Australia is on a strong path to become a world leader in innovation and entrepreneurship. “Businesses such as Kinetic Elements are at the forefront of this development.” Ms Kroger said the family business was a great example of innovation and enterprise in the community. “Forty-eight years ago, the same business made rubber for stamps around the kitchen table,” she said. “Today they are at the cutting edge of hightech manufacturing.”

Company fined over underpaying truck drivers UNDERPAYING three truck drivers has cost a Dandenong South transport company more than $40,000. The Federal Circuit Court penalty followed a Fair Work Ombudsman investigation and included a $34,500 fine against Openica Logistics and a further $7100 against its director Vladimir Taseki. The workers, aged in their 50s, contacted Fair Work for help after being
underpaid living away from home allowances. Two were not paid casual loading and one was not paid for all kilometres driven. The underpayments took place between 2010 and 2012 and totalled $69,175. The employees were back-paid in full after Fair Work started legal proceedings. Judge Grant Riethmuller said the underpayments were significant, particularly
in the context of wages for truck drivers. He said the living away from home allowance had been a feature of the relevant award since 1963. “The respondents point out that the sleeper cabs in the trucks were assessed by Work Safe as sufficient for fatigue management, although, clearly, requiring the driver to sleep in a cabin is an imposition beyond normal arrangements one
would expect for an employee, for example a motel room,” he said. “It is clear that the living away from home allowance is intended to compensate a driver for these conditions.” Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James said the court’s decision sent a message that businesses could expect to face tough penalties for serious or repeat contraventions of their workplace obligations.
Plaza’s new chiefs move in DANDENONG Plaza will soon have a new owner. GPT Group has agreed to sell the shopping centre to Sydney-based Armada Funds Management for $197 million, subject to Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) approval. Settlement is expected on 29 February. JLL’s retail investments head Simon Rooney negotiated the transaction and said it would be the fourth largest in the retail sector for 2015 and the second largest individual shopping centre sold for the year. The centre has about 57,128 square metres of gross lettable area and includes Kmart and Target discount department stores, Coles, Woolworths and Aldi supermarkets, Reading Cinemas, 14 mini major tenancies, 142 specialty tenancies, 23 kiosks and car parking for 3248 vehicles. GPT’s head of retail Vanessa Orth said replacing Myer and new leases with Target and Woolworth had preceded starting a sale campaign in September.

Excuses fail By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DISQUALIFIED driver has been told by a magistrate that he had run out of excuses and last chances when he was jailed for six months. Aaron Reynolds, 37, who was living at a farm near Pakenham, repeatedly implored magistrate Gerard Bryant not to send him to prison during a hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 15 February. “I’ll do anything,” he said. Mr Bryant said Reynolds had been evading trial for months and provided “fanciful” and “implausible” excuses or reasons. Earlier that day Reynolds had twice requested adjournments, first to get proof he was driving disqualified in Pakenham because of his pregnant partner’s medical emergency. He then dispensed with his Victoria Legal Aid advocate and requested an adjournment to find a new lawyer. When his requests were refused, Reynolds recommissioned the VLA lawyer and pleaded guilty to all charges. The offences included breaching a suspended sentence, possessing a firearm unlicensed and as a prohibited

had been loaned to him by a mechanic, he’d been searching it for lost money and that the weapon and ammunition had been left by a male who had threatened him on two occasions. Reynolds was also charged with driving with ice in his system on Dandenong Bypass on 8 July. Four months later he was caught driving while disqualified by police on Princes Highway, Pakenham. Reynolds told the court on 15 February that he could get a doctor’s letter to prove he had just dropped off his pregnant partner at hospital on that occasion. Mr Bryant said Reynolds had made no such explanation according to a police summary but told police at the time that he was dropping the car off at his sister’s place. Reynolds’s six-month suspended jail term for seven previous suspended-driving counts was invoked. He was also sentenced to a three-month concurrent jail term. Reynolds was granted bail to appeal against his sentence at the County Court.

person, drug driving and disqualified driving. On 21 February last year, an observably “substance-affected” Reynolds crashed a Commodore into a median safety rail on South Gippsland Highway near Junction Village, the court was told. He allegedly tested positive for ice and cannabis, though he claimed in a police interview he had only taken anti-epilepsy medication and Ventolin. Reynolds told police that he’d slipped and hit his head on the steering wheel, causing the car to veer off the highway. He later instructed his lawyer that the crash was caused by a blown tyre. On 28 March he and two men were seen searching through a car in Dandenong, throwing items out on the street. Police found syringes, empty zip-lock bags and a cigarette packet containing 13 rounds of 0.22-calibre ammunition as well as five more same-sized rounds in the car. The rounds matched a working pen-pistol with a springrelease trigger which was also found in the vehicle. A “sweating and nervous” Reynolds told police the car

Bloods take premiership By JARROD POTTER DDCA - TWENTY20 GRAND FINAL DELIGHT and disaster - these were the contrasting fortunes in Springvale South’s Twenty20 premiership win over Buckley Ridges. While the Bloods had a phenomenal outing - riding the luck and rattling over the Ridges cheaply after sending the hosts in - there was nothing that went right for D.J. Watson’s men. It started with a lost toss, as Springvale South sent Buckley Ridges in on a greenish deck, and only got worse as skipper Watson (0) immediately fell. Imports Sunsantha Pradeep (20) and Kunal Kapoor (15) made a quick fightback - as Pradeep put a couple of slapped sixes over the rope - but, alongside marquee Jaime Brohier (7), none of the top order particularly fired. Wickets fell in clumps and worse still for the hosts, Buckley Ridges could not cash in off the part-timers. Bloods’ skipper Brett Forsyth (1/11) - Springvale South’s marquee player - and Brayden Sharp (1/17) were miserly through the middle overs, holding Buckley Ridges down at the critical juncture. Suren Ekanayake (18 not out) and Cal O’Hare (12) rotated the strike wherever they could, but couldn’t hit the boundary ball - all the more problematic on the postage stamp that is Park Oval. A six and a four from Troy Aust (18 not out) set the bar at 121 for Springvale South to hunt down a second Twenty20 title in as many years. The response was well-weighted from the Bloods as Forsyth (24 not out) anchored the effort and rotated the strike to his more powerful counterparts. While the Ridges’ ground-fielding was solid, the chances did not fall their way at all. Michael Vandort (44) rode his luck - avoiding an easy run-out, a stumping and a near-miss catch all in the same

Vandort’s dismissal only brought out more pain for Buckley Ridges. Nathan King (46) viciously destroyed the opponents, but once again rode his luck with a couple of near misses on the rope. O’Hare got finger tips to two fullblooded swats into the boundary, but
couldn’t hold on as it bobbled out of his hands. King seized the second life to smash the next two balls into the trees to all but end the innings, leaving Forsyth to strike final few runs to clinch the Bloods their first 2015/16 cup. It started with a good toss to win and Forsyth wanted to cash in with a run-chase and wait for the deck to even out.
“We normally think runs on the board - that’s how we won last year’s T20 grand final, but the wicket had a tinge of green,” Forsyth said. “Didn’t want to waste a ball by going slow at the start, and we trust in the bowlers and fielders, and to play the cricket we want to our plan. “I knew if our top seven batted those 15 or so overs out we’d get home and that was the case - it went to script I suppose.”
Young runner is on track for quick success By RUSSELL BENNETT HOCK Meng Siau has always shown signs of being naturally fast - right from when he began to crawl as a little boy and his knees barely touched the ground. But it wasn’t until last year that the young Haileybury student truly began to harness his god-given gift for speed. Remarkably, Meng only started athletics training in June as a 12-year-old and before the end of the year he’d competed at both the state and national championships. His first competition was in the APS (Associated Public Schools) titles where he came first in all three of his events the 100 metres, 200 metres and the 4x100 metre relay. He then went on to the School Sport Victoria (SSV) Regional Championship where he won gold in the 100 metres and came fourth in the 200 metres. His relay team also won gold in the 4x100 metre relay. From there, it was the State Championships at Albert Park where he won bronze in the 100 metres and silver in the 4x100. Then, in December at the School Sport Australia (SSA) national championships Meng and his Victorian team mates won bronze in the 4x100 and he
came fifth in the individual 100 metres with a personal best of 12.26 seconds. Meng had just a five-week block to train for the national championships, and in that time - thanks to Haileybury athletics teacher Mark Reed - a specialist trainer was organised to help him prepare for the event. “We also engaged a personal trainer for Meng whom we are also very thankful for his help,” said Shui Ling, Meng’s mother. “Shannon, at Mordy Personal Training, was very quick to come up with a plan to help Meng strengthen his core muscles. “Although Meng did not get a medal for the championship, he was at that time the fastest under-13 100 metre runner in Victoria. “For that, we are very proud of him.” Meng said he now wants to work on his starts off the blocks, so he doesn’t have to make up deficits in his races. He’s got the natural speed but he needs to work on the technical aspect to take that next step. From being naturally quick when he crawled as little boy to again showcasing his speed later in his childhood playing tiggy in the playground at lunchtime, it’s clear that Meng’s words aren’t empty. “I just love to run,” he said.

It makes for another DDCA flag for the Turf 1 powerhouse and while Forsyth is a Dandenong mainstay, he was thrilled to play his part for the Bloods. “I’m lucky I came from such a good club as we’ve got so many good players and so many nice people as well,” Forsyth said. “It’s fantastic to get back and play with them and give a bit back to my club.”
Rangers climb through to win A MOUNTAIN of injuries, plus fitting together as a new look squad, didn’t halt the Dandenong Rangers racing into the WNBL finals. The Rangers faced SEQ Stars on Sunday afternoon - after the Journal went to print - and the match impacted who the Rangers would face in the semi. Dandenong could face Townsville, Perth or SEQ Stars in the first final showcasing just how close the league has been this season with the minor premiership up for grabs heading into the last round. Dandenong has been boosted by the return of rising-star centre Alex Bunton who played limited minutes last week against Townsville. For the first time this season, it clears the Rangers’ injury list - giving coach Larissa Anderson plenty of options heading into the first final. The expanded 2015-16 WNBL finals will be fought out with a threematch grand final series starting on 12 March. Thunder strikes early gold By JARROD POTTER NPL2 EAST - ROUND 1 DANDENONG Thunder came to play in its NPL2 East season-opener, rocketing to the top of the ladder with a 4-0 thumping of Nunawading City. Showcasing its star last-minute super-signing, former Socceroo and A-League defender Simon Colosimo, in the first salvo, the Thunder completely shut the door on the visitors with the emphatic all-round performance. Wasting no time starting its onslaught, the Thunder sizzled early as midfielders Kristian Sarkies and Daniel Bennett brought the forwards plenty of opportunities. Dandenong had no trouble getting clear at the front but really struggled to hammer home its first-half shots as nearly a dozen would’ve been squandered through the first 45. Dandenong had it on a string, only to hang them wide or chip simple attempts back at Nunawading City, but at least Dandenong had shots to miss. The visitors failed to muster anything potent up forward as Colosimo and Faisal Sakhizada clamped down brilliantly. While it was deadlocked at the break without a score, the two halves were chalk and cheese on the scoreboard as Dandenong roared to life mere minutes into the second stanza. It started through Amir Osmancevic (49’ and 55’) dancing around the defence as the Thunder striker thumped home the first goal of the New Year.
Dandenong Thunder’s star recruit Simon Colosimo, left, got to celebrate his first night in Picture: JARROD POTTER the Thunder stripes after a four-goal victory. 150521 Osmancevic would cap off his brace soon after, while Daniel Bennett (61’) put the third away to dial up the visitors’ pain, but the best work was saved for Osmancevic on the fourth goal only seconds later. Number 11 brought forward counterpart Veton Korcari (62’) another great opportunity as his next beguiling run down the left side badly opened up Nunawading City’s defences. A sharp assist went through the traffic, finding
Korcari unmanned at the back and able to slot a textbook goal to ice the game. With the exception of early missed opportunities, the only other thing the new-look Thunder line-up will have to figure out are the words to the club song. The fresh faces cheered on as the veterans belted out the Thunder anthem in the rooms after the final whistle to the delight of everyone at George Andrews Reserve, especially the coach.
Last lunge for local finals
Panthers take their hardest knock By JARROD POTTER VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 16 (Day 2) SEASON’S end came a round early for Dandenong (191) following a demoralising thrashing at the hands of ladder leaders Fitzroy-Doncaster (6/382). As hard as it was to be pasted on the field, the tough times continued in the change rooms as the group took a long, hard look at itself and its approach heading into the last clash of the year. It started well enough for Dandenong as it steadily chipped away at the visitors’ top order - making inroads bit by bit as the top four departed after 131 runs. But the Panthers couldn’t find the finisher; one more wicket to expose the tail earlier than expected for the visitors. Needing one or two more strikes in the middle order to really through a cat among the pigeons, Dandenong instead was left to the devices of Lions’ middle order batsman Nat
Vardi (171no). Taking on the opposition from ball one, Vardi had a field day as he shifted the tide back in the Lions’ favour in tandem with Liam Banthorpe (38). The duo added 152 for the fifth wicket to take the points and then get some important time at the crease before finals. Vardi went to tea having reached his maiden Victorian Premier Cricket century and continued the onslaught afterwards, smashing his way past 150 to really sink the boot in as he swatted the attack around with Trent Lawford (32). Fitzroy-Doncaster batted on after 5pm, leaving more than a few people stunned at the ground, but soon came to their senses after one over from wicketkeeper David Alleyne (0/5). With frayed nerves all around Shepley Oval, the sides agreed to shake hands and leave it at a 191run deficit. Dandenong’s finale is away to Greenvale to cap off 2015/16.
“We’ve got a lot of spirit there and a great combination of both experience and youth, but we’re one unit and it’s worked well,” Thunder coach Huss Skenderovic said. “In the second half we came out ... worked on what was required and did the business.” Having put pen to paper just before the transfer deadline, Colosimo was impressed by what he saw on field as the side flourished up forward. “I thought it was excellent - you talked about the first half, second half ... all that went missing in the first half was putting them in the back of the net,” Colosimo said. “I think we made more chances in the first than we did in the second, but I think the boys created anywhere between 15 and 20 good, solid chances and in a 90 minute game of football that’s what you want.” The Thunder also presented a cheque for $3000 to the Cancer Council, raised at the preseason Qamil Rexhepi Cup named in tribute of the beloved Thunder administrator and supporter. In other results, Dandenong City drew with Murray United 1-1 and Springvale White Eagles went down to Goulburn Valley Suns 2-3. In the highly anticipated inaugural Dandenong derby, Thunder will battle City away on Saturday afternoon for a chance to win the Jim Memeti Cup.

DDCA - ROUND 10 (Day 2) THE race to the DDCA finals finishing-line is still going as Heinz Southern Districts and Mordialloc are set to fight for the last spot. Taking maximum points, Buckley Ridges (2/169dec and 2/138) tore through North Dandenong (131 and 172). Buckley’s fourth-innings run chase was on. The side needed to slap about 140 in the dying overs after a well measured response from the Northerners on day two set the scene. Jayson Hobbs (54) and Troy Aust (48) went ballistic to get the side all 10 points. Lyndale (69 and 86) suffered at the hands of Hallam Kolora Park (153), continuing the tough trot towards Turf 2 with another outright defeat. Ben Montgomery (30no) was gallant in the second innings, holding out despite the Hawks’ best efforts. With Mordialloc and Heinz winning though, and only one-dayer left in the season though, the Hawks and Ridges respectively have bowed out of the finals hunt. Springvale South (212) did its best to halt Heinz Southern Districts (7/256), but fell short in the end after Michael Davies (5/66) went on the warpath. Davies picked up his third five-for of the season to leave
Berwick (7/212dec) left scant regard for Parkfield (148 and 0/58) as the visitors hunted down the par target comfortably. Berwick’s middle order stood tall as usual with Ryan Crawford (49no) leading the way, while Jarrod Goodes (37), Josh Holden (36) and Nathan Pilon (23) all contributed down the order. Dandenong West (184) did its best to hunt down Narre Warren (9/240dec), but in the end the Magpies flew too high for the Bulls to smash apart. Sam Bracey (71) continued his stellar season with another half-ton, but in the end the Bulls couldn’t generate a match-winning stand as Chris Edwards (4/33), among others, ran riot. In VSDCA results, Noble Park (9/230) has the faintest pulse in the finals race after its victory over ladder-leading Mount Waverley (156). The Bulls ran riot on day two, knocking over the top dogs with Andrew Berman (5/41) in particular impressing. Noble Park will need to take an outright victory to eke its way into finals as it remains in a four-way deadlock with Kew, Preston and Coburg fighting for the final spot, currently held by Balwyn.

New Stingrays show form PUSHING an extended squad through the wringer, Dandenong Stingrays started refining the list across three TAC Cup practice matches against Sandringham on Sunday. The aim wasn’t to win, or to even get a great sense of game-style of the new-look squad. It was about the players making an impression and holding their own at the next level. Throughout the Under-16, Under-17 and senior matches some shone and others receded into the background as the Stingrays began the hard process of trimming their 80-strong list. “We just put kids in positions we want to see them playing. We don’t care if we have five or six key forwards or bad match-ups, we just wanted to give the young boys a chance,” Stingrays coach Craig Black said. “I think we’ve got some good depth, but you always look at the players that you’re missing you look at last year and think ‘we don’t have a Kieran Collins or a Jacob Weitering’, and we had the same thing two years ago with no Kyle Gray or Mitch White.” Roaming defensively in the senior clash, the coach was pleased to not only see Reece Piper (Berwick) out on the footy field - considering the spinal injury he suffered in his TAC Cup debut last year - but also having a great impact on the last line of defence. Piper played the link-up defender role to a tee and took some of the kicking-in duties to add another string to the midfielder’s bow. Others to impress were key position players Tom Murphy, Mason de Wit and Jack Doman, while draft prospect Liam McKay was exceptional through the midfield from limited time-onground. “Liam just showed the advantages of playing games as a 17-year-old in his second pre-season,” Black said. Dandenong’s TAC Cup season opener is its traditional clash against Gippsland, on 26 March at Morwell.

Personal touch to foster new footy stars A NEW football development academy based out of Berwick is set to become an absolute game-changer in the south-east. Spearheaded by two of the best known figures in local football Aussie Jones and Travis Marsham the South East Elite Pathways Academy (SEEPA) will offer an elite development program for the 2016 season onwards and is open to every age bracket from the under-10s through to the under-17s. It specifically focuses on the development of local talent and takes a personal approach through its coaching with an aim to improving the quality of the sport in the region. Former St Kilda gun Aussie Jones is heading up the academy. After playing more than 220 AFL
games, Jones has since gone on to hold a number of key roles in senior local, and elite junior footy. His great mate Marsham, who most recently took Cora Lynn to the 2014 and 2015 senior premierships in the Ellinbank and District Football League (EDFL), also forms part of a massive coaching panel that includes the likes of former Richmond skipper Chris Newman, Collingwood legend Peter Daicos, former St Kilda big man Justin Koschitzke, AFL great Stan Alves, Frankston VFL coach Patrick Hill, former West Coast and Collingwood player Andrew Williams, and local footy icons Jock Holland, Ricky Clark, Brett Evans and Steven Kidd. “We won’t have an official link with TAC Cup sides but if I was coaching in TAC I’d be pushing my 13 or 14-year-old kids to do it

Travis Marsham and Aussie Jones. 150287 - even the 15 and 16-year-olds who might’ve missed out on their schoolboy squads,” Jones said. “If you’re the Stingrays and you have 10 kids who miss out in the 15s, but they come through an elite program like this and go back a better player, all it means is that their under-16 squad is going to be deeper and stronger.” In addition to programs tailored
to their own football needs, players involved will also get nutritional information, career guidance and social media education. Local coaches will also be mentored. “I reckon our footy that we produce in this area is so underrated massively so,” Jones said. “We want to make sure the development of the kids is going to make it as strong as it should be in three, five, or 10 years’ time." Also based out of the same Berwick address will be another venture from Marsham and Jones - P3 Sports and Recovery, which helps athletes of any sport prepare, perform and prevent using state-of-the-art technology, equipment and support . SEEPA is limited to 20 places in each age level. For more nformation, visit www. myseepa.com.

MOTORING Stylish roadster classic By EWAN KENNEDY FOR the first time in Australia the brilliant little Mazda MX-5 is offered with two different engines. That’s chiefly to permit the importer to have a price leader (at $31,990) to tackle the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86. However, some drivers relish using their driving skills to get the best from small engines so the 1.5 has been selling well. A few weeks back we tested an MX-5 with the 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces a relatively modest 96 kW and 150 Nm. Now we have just spent a very enjoyable week in the 2.0-litre MX-5. It has a pretty respectable 118 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. Our test car was a Roadster GT 2.0 with a sixspeed manual gearbox. The 2.0-litre has a starting price of $34,490 and comes with 17-inch alloys, Mazda’s MZD Connect system and LED daylight running lamps as standard. While the second and third generations (1997 and 2005) were evolutions of the original 1989 NA series, the genfour designers have given us a modern shape based on the ‘Kodo’ design as seen in the rest of the Mazda range. To our eyes the rear is rather generic, following the current global theme of round units tapering outwards into slim horizontal areas.
Brilliant Mazda MX-5 roadster has neat new look. The MX-5 comes as a Roadster and an upmarket Roadster GT. The GT stands out visually in that the body colour continues over onto the tops of the doors into the cabin. It has black door-mirror housings. Automatic lights and wipers, climate control on the air conditioning, and keyless entry and start are standard in the GT. A 7.0-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, internet radio, Mazda’s MZD Connect infotainment system has a 7.0-inch touchscreen and is operated by a Commander Control be-
tween the seats. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine used in the MX-5 we reviewed has 118 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. Six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions are offered. Paddles behind the wheel of the auto do provide sort-of manual driving, but it’s not the same thing. Give us the manual any day. The MX-5 received five stars for passive safety, but only a four-star rating in safety assist. A spokesperson for Mazda
Australia points out that “there has never been a sports car that has received a five star rating in the past”. Again in the interests of chassis balance the seats are lower than before. Getting in and out will be a challenge if your body has a few extra years on the clock, or your belly has gained some extra inches. Try before you buy… Once settled into the low seats you will find they provide good support without being overly aggressive in their side bolsters. Having 33 per cent more displacement than the 1.5 engine instantly endeared us to the MX-5 2.0. And ‘instantly’ is the right word to describe this sports powerplant - because the moment you hit the pedal on the right you get instant action. Sure, turbocharged hot hatches produce even more oomph than a naturally aspirated unit like the Mazda but not un-
til the irritating lag has finally let you get the power you demanded seemingly an age back. Even better, the little Mazda roadster sounds great as there’s no turbo to muffle the exhaust note. A little more volume would be appreciated, but there are tough regulations about this sort of thing. Keep the engine in the 4000 to 6000 range - it’s happy to get up to 7000 - on your favourite stretch of winding mountain road and your smile will grow by the minute. The six-speed manual gearshift has short throws, is ultra smooth and is perhaps even better than in previous MX5s. Brilliant. Operation of the soft-top roof is ultra simple. Undo a single catch in the centre of the windscreen header, fold the roof back and it clips down into the open position.
