Geelong council is still using a weedkiller that the World Health Organisation (WHO) says probably causes cancer. The weedkiller, glyphosate originally trade marked as Roundup - is commonly used by households, farms and local councils. But WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has upgraded its evaluation of the herbicide from “possibly to “probably carcinogenic to humans. Australian authorities were now re-assessing the risks glyphosate-based products presents to humans. The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) said it took the new assessment seriously. In a statement, APVMA said it would examine the assessment in collaboration with the Office of Chemical Safety in the

Bail refused over stalking By ALANA MITCHELSON A Drysdale man on stalking charges has been refused bail overs fear for the safety of his former de facto partner and their children. The 34-year-old appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to face four charges including stalking and breaching an intervention order. The woman and young children had been under the protection of an intervention order since 11 November. The accused made many attempts to contact his ex-partner between August and October last year, Leading Senior Constable Mark Wakeling told the court. The defendant allegedly made phone calls at all hours of the day and night from several different numbers that police linked to him, Ldg Sen Const Wakeling said. He also allegedly sent Facebook requests from false accounts created under family friends’
names and tampered with the victim’s email address and Facebook password. The court also heard that the accused cancelled the victim’s credit card, falsely reporting it as stolen. The situation escalated when the accused attended his children’s primary school on 19 February and requested to see them, Ldg Sen Const Wakeling said. “He denied that going to their school was a breach of the order. “On one instance, the victim was in her car stopped at a roundabout and the accused drove straight past her from her right hand side, waving and yelling at her before pointing his fingers towards her, forming the shape of a gun. “When brought in to the Geelong Police Station for an interview he made partial admissions but denied trying to make contact with his former partner, stalking her or hacking her accounts. “My understanding is that he had been using ice about two to three times a week approximately one month ago.
“I’m in daily contact with the victim and she said she’d be shattered if he was given bail. “The only way she’ll get peace is if he’s in custody.” The accused covered his face with his palm as the police prosecutor mentioned his children’s names before the court. Police prosecutor Siobhan Daly opposed bail, arguing his release would be an “unacceptable risk” to the children. “The children have been pulled out of school after the incident on 19 February,” Ms Daly said. “They and the victim were moved to an emergency refuge and have since been moved to another location.” Magistrate Ron Saines said the accused “failed to show cause for the granting of bail”. “There’s no other order I could grant to further protect the victim or to further protect the safety of the children,” Mr Saines said. The matter was adjourned for a special mention on 16 March.

In Brief Armed robbery An armed robber is on the run after holding up a gaming room cashier at Newcomb’s Peninsula Hotel early yesterday. Police said a man armed with a firearm demanded cash before fleeing with a “sum of money”.
‘Rape’ bail Police have withdrawn charges against one man and another is out on bail over the alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl at St Albans Park in November. Rowan Wild, 27, walked free when police dropped the charges without explanation last Friday before a magistrate bailed Kevin Andrew Wild, 29, on Tuesday after saying some evidence against him was “very weak”.

Solo Maddern Television newsreader Rebecca Maddern, pictured, will be the Geelong Cats’ “solo” number-one ticket-holder in 2016, the club has announced. Ms Maddern had shared the title since 2011 with other high-profile members but said she was “truly honoured and delighted” to be given the role on her own.
Sponsor shortage Geelong has failed to appear in a list of the top 95 Victorian postcodes for the number of households sponsoring children in developing countries. The figures were “testament to the generosity and warm-heartedness” of Victorians in areas appearing on the list, said Plan International Australia’s Ben Holgate.
Man missing A “vulnerable” Geelong man has been missing for almost a fortnight, according to a police Facebook page. Police had “genuine concerns” for the welfare of Gregory Cavanagh, 58, because items he left at the Sir Charles Hotham Hotel indicated he intended to return.
Curl ‘overhaul’ GREEN TOP: GMHBA rooftop gardeners Guy Moodie and Joanne Lytas. (LINDSAY KELLEY)
Upping the stakes: garden competition raises the roof By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Greening Geelong has been a common catchcry for some time but a new competition hopes to extend it to places that rarely host greenery. Future Proofing Geelong has launched a competition for the best green top in the city - the top of a building, that is. Health fund GMHBA established a rooftop garden on its Moorabool Street head office in 2015 with staff building and tending the plants. The garden comprises 10 raised beds covering 19 square metres of rooftop.

Produce from the garden was donated to the Christ Church Community Meals Program to assist with its evening meals program for people facing food insecurity. Competition organiser Liz Raimondo said all building owners and businesses in Geelong were invited to register their interest in turning rooftop spaces into green Meccas. The competition was open to anyone curious about creating a green roof space on their building, even if they were unsure of what it cost or what to do, she said. Everyone expressing interest would be invited to the competition launch, receive help to estab-
lish their garden, receive and invitation to a free Green Roof workshop and become eligible to apply for grants. “All green roof designs and builds entered will be in the running for a $10,000 prize pool, which will be judged and announced at the end of 2016,” Ms Raimondo said. She was also keen to hear from product and service providers for rooftop garden design or construction. Ms Raimondo is receiving expressions of interest by emailing raimondo@geelongcity.vic.gov. au or phoning 5272 5077.
Torquay’s Rip Curl must undertake a “dramatic overhaul of checks and balances” after it was exposed selling products made in harsh North Korean factories, according to Oxfam Australia. The overhaul could begin with the company releasing a list of factories that make its products, said Oxfam Australia chief Helen Szoke.
Energy upgrades City Hall will need 10 years to recoup the cost of heating and cooling upgrades from improved energy efficiency at Grovedale’s Leisurelink, Corio Library and a council depot. The $340,000 project, with $170,000 from Sustainability Victoria, would deliver energy efficiencies and “offset around 239 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions” a year, said councillor Andy Richards.

Double Take Barwon Water was perhaps acting local but definitely thinking global early this week, if its Twitter account was any indication. On Monday it tweeted a YouTube video link promoting a global campaign on water and sanitation in developing nations. The intention was all very commendable, of course. But, hopefully, the local authority hasn’t forgotten far-flung northern Geelong where the drinking water has recently tasted, as councillor Kylie Fisher (pictured) colourfully described it, “like dirt. Sounds like a worthy new issue for a social-media campaign - just don’t expect to see it on Barwon Water’s Twitter account!

The government giveth but it doth not taketh away - when it comes to tourism, at least. This week the State Government announced funding of $425,000 to help Great Ocean Road tourism operators get back on their feet after the Wye River bushfires. It seemed great on the surface - operators have been hit hard by missing out on a huge chunk of summer trade. Except the money is going to government bodies: Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism and Surf Coast and Colac-Otway shires. Government is never as generous as when it gives money to itself.

It’s not uncommon to see a vehicle break
down in an awkward spot during peak hour, leaving a line of frustrated motorists trying to find a way around. But when the stalled vehicle is a prime mover it adds another dimension to the difficulties. It only takes a couple of good Samaritans to help push the average family car off the road and out of the way but there was no hope of that with the prime mover stuck in a slip lane at the busy intersection of Midland Highway and Anakie Road on Monday morning. So the driver stayed in his cabin and yawningly surveyed the bank up of traffic instead. A bat breakthrough in the secret labs at Geelong’s Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) led to a breakout of bat puns in the media this week. The story, quoting bat immunologist Dr Michelle Baker (pictured) and her team of bat scientists, spread like a virus. Even the CSIRO blog headline writer could not resist: ‘24/7 immunity from lethal diseases? It’s in the bat, man!’. CSIRO’s bat virology team uncovered a unique ability in bats allowing them to carry - but remain unaffected by - lethal diseases. Unlike humans, bats keep their immune systems switched on 24/7, which scientists believe could hold the key to protecting people from deadly diseases like ebola, Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome and Hendra virus. Double Take wonders how they managed to do so much while wearing those capes, masks and all that latex.

WORK LOCAL: Unionists and workers protesting against Viva at the Geelong refinery.
Union lashes ‘jobs ripoff’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Unions have launched an advertising campaign and protest against Geelong’s oil refinery operator for using foreign workers. A group of unemployed people plan to protest against the official start of work on Viva’s new $50 million crude oil tank on Friday 25 February. Geelong Trades Hall has launched the campaign with a full-page advertisement in Friday’s Indy, accusing Viva of “putting local jobs last”. Trades Hall claims Viva’s use of 457-visa workers locks unemployed locals out of local jobs. Viva plans to spend $350 million on refinery upgrades including the new tank and $85 million on maintenance. Geelong Trades Hall secretary Tim Gooden said Viva and parent company Vitol Group were excluding local workers and suppliers from the expansion of the refinery. Viva had engaged a New South Wales labour hire firm, New World Engineering Construction
(NWEC), with a history of using temporary visa workers, he said. “Viva has given the green light to using imported steel in the plant and Viva’s Geelong-based human resources manager had said that 457 visa workers would be used,” Mr Gooden said. “Viva’s Geelong refinery must put local workers first and put rip-off temporary work visas last. “Part of Viva’s plan is that it wants to expand its temporary visa workforce and lower its wage costs and by-pass local Geelong workers. “The real targets are local Geelong families looking for work. Every single job that is given to a 457 visa means another local family misses out. “Over 4000 manufacturing workers have lost jobs over the last 10 years in Geelong with 3000 more manufacturing job losses coming. “The real victims of the use of 457 visas are the locals who are effectively locked out of jobs and our local young people looking for apprenticeships.” Refinery manager Thys Heyns said Viva’s $350 million commitment would give the facility a
“new lease on life”. “The crude oil tank is a critical investment for the future sustainability of the refinery and means we continue to provide jobs for around 700 workers as well as indirect jobs. “We’re spending more than $200 million a year on local goods and services but if we keep doing things the same way the outcome (closure) would be the same.” Mr Heyns said the tank - the largest in Australia - would enable the refinery to lower its unit cost of production. Local firm Brockman’s was one of two final bidders for the project. The winner, NWEC, had partnered with a Korean company for the project, Mr Heyns said. “NWEC will bring a small number of foreign workers to help on the project and transfer skills to the local workforce. “This will be about 11 specialist welders and supervisors out of total project workforce of 120, so more than 90 per cent of the workers will be local.”
Geelong will launch a National Year of Digital Inclusion on Friday 26 February in the hope of helping spread the benefits of the online age. The initiative aims to address “the increasing effects of digital literacy on social and civic connectedness” among people with limited access to or experience with digital technologies. City Hall will spearhead the year’s activities in Geelong to help people learn new digital skills. “We’re encouraging organisations to run events to help people learn new digital skills and to include them in Geelong’s National Year of Digital Inclusion calendar of events,” said councillor Rod Macdonald. “Our aim is to help the people of Geelong learn new skills which will increase their ability to interact with their community and improve their quality of life. “Increasingly, more government and business services are online so these organisations need their citizens to be online to access their services. “Therefore, it’s important for all sectors to participate in the year of digital inclusion and help their clients learn the skills needed or help them gain access to technology.” The council rolled out a digital strategy last year, in part to help the community to “maximise the benefits of technology”. Council initiatives during the year of inclusion will include extending free wi-fi across Geelong, supporting the establishment of Code Clubs for kids and improving digital access for Whittington residents.

ON THE SCENE: Bellarine SES volunteers attend an emergency on the peninsula.
SES branches out educate the public on the SES, Mr Scott said. The extra members would also inform the public on preventative measures to minimise the impact of storm damage to their properties. Mr Scott said many people wrongly perceived the SES as fire-fighters. “Many people think the tasks they see us performing on TV are all we do and that can put some people off, but it’s not the case. “We, for example, have members with disabilities who perform valuable roles without climbing on roofs or cutting up road crash vehicles.” Unit member David Pytellek said the Bellarine SES was under pressure to expand to meet demand for its services from the peninsula’s growing population. “The more people there are in the area, the more people there will be needing our services during storms and floods,” he said. “Government grants relieve some of the stress but they are definitely not enough to run the unit.”
By ALANA MITCHELSON A Bellarine SES unit will form a fund-raising team to take the strain off their operational team. Grants co-ordinator Andrew Scott said the team was collecting funds to create a recuperation area where members could rest in-between jobs. “They come in clusters but we might get as many as 20 jobs in a row. Then there is a lull where we hang around at our base for some time waiting for the next job,” Mr Scott said. “At the moment members will often just sit in the truck for hours. “We run a 24/7 operation of about 60 members at any one time and none of us get paid. "We’ve always been able to get people out there to the scene but we want to reduce the pressure on operational members who often have to turn out at all hours of the day or night.” The team was seeking 15 non-operational members for events-based fund-raising and to

Funds needed for drugs long-haul By ALANA MITCHELSON A fully-funded rehabilitation centre is key to tackling ice addiction in Geelong, according to a policeman leading the local fight against the drug. Senior Sergeant Tony Francis, who heads Geelong’s ice taskforce, said the city desperately needed the facility, particularly for women. “A major, fully-funded rehabilitation centre would address the greatest areas of need, particularly for women and youth,” Sen Sgt Francis said. “People with addiction feed that addiction by committing crimes so rather than punitive measures we have to get the addiction sorted. “Rehab can’t be one dimensional. It needs to be
multi-faceted and a major fully funded, regulated centre would have a greater success rate.” Geelong family therapist and counsellor Colleen Morris, who has helped clients with addictions for 13 years, said Geelong’s existing “general rehabilitation centres“ did a “fantastic job” but were at full capacity with long waiting lists. “It’s rare an individual will completely recover after one rehabilitation episode. “Recovery is a long-term haul and people may return many times before they completely recover,“ Ms Morris said. “A multi-faceted and fully funded rehabilitation facility would be very welcome in this region to supplement our region’s limited resources.
“If a woman chooses to go into a Geelong rehab service, she’ll live side-by-side with men and other women with just a small bedroom suite for privacy. “Already in a state of significant vulnerability, frequently women are easily exploited by other residents, adding additional challenges to their withdrawal and recovery. “Our local youth-treatment facility, YSAS, designed for youth between 12 and 21, has four beds offering a four-night stay - hardly touching the surface of the escalating need in Geelong.” Western Victoria MP Simon Ramsay called on the State Government to invest in rehabilitation. “Rehabilitation in the drug and alcohol space

Cards help kids with good read Special postcards will help parents in northern Geelong to read with their children. The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) launched the postcards in a resource pack for parents at Corio’s William Hovell kindergarten this week. CBCA Victoria president Christine Oughtred said that parents and children reading together could be fun with “so many wonderful books to choose from to get started”. “You just need to find 10 minute a day to share a book together.” Councillor Kylie Fisher said the Reading Together resources were a new initiative. Each pack included the postcards with a poster and a sample box of books for local families, she said. She said the postcards, to be distributed during next month’s National Playgroup Week, promoted literacy while helping parents enhance reading with their children.

A woman smiled in court before leaving on bail this week over an alleged attempted armed robbery at a Geelong petrol station. Tammy Brennan, 42, appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court smiling and waving at her lawyer from the dock. Brennan allegedly entered the service station on Sydney Parade and demanded cash while threatening a 7/11 attendant with a knife. The court heard that Ms Brennan acted on her own and had no prior history of crime. Her lawyer, Stephanie Mawby, asked the magistrate to adjourn the hearing because Brennan was “unwell”. “Informant Detective Senior Constable Daryl Crosthwaite requested that Brennan abide by her GP’s instructions of prescribed medication for her mental health issues,” Ms Mawby said. “She has schizoaffective disorder and possibly bipolar. Brennan has been in an out of the Swanston Centre in recent times.” Magistrate Peter Mellas granted Brennan bail, which was unopposed by police, on the condition that she not talk to witnesses or frequent the Geelong 7/11 before a committal mention on 13 May.

Hormone plea for son
Geelong Star in ‘security’ breach
By ALANA MITCHELSON
Controversial trawler Geelong Star has been caught breaching an oil rig security exclusion zone. Recreational fishing advocate Graham Pike said the factory freezer ship “breached security in Australia’s sensitive Bass Strait oil rigs’ exclusion zone”. When challenged on radio, Geelong Star’s skipper said he was unaware that the ship was in an exclusion zone, Mr Pike said. He said Geelong Star had been caught visually and on radar. Mr Pike said a security officer was sceptical about the excuse. “A security officer later commented: ‘Here’s the skipper of a large (95-metre) vessel sailing around within a few miles of some of the most sensitive infrastructure in Australia and he says he really doesn’t know it’s an exclusion zone.’” Mr Pike said recreational fishers who inadvertently “wandered briefly” in the exclusion zone received heavy fines. “They expect similar sanctions by the Federal Government for the Geelong Star,” Mr Pike said.
A Belmont mum is concerned for her son’s development after being denied a growth hormone to improve the symptoms of his genetic disorder. After unknowingly living with Noonan syndrome her whole life, Miranda Laird has experienced firsthand the challenges that eight-year-old Morgan will face. Noonan symptoms include a short stature, distinctive facial features, developmental delay, skeletal abnormalities, congenital heart disease and mild learning difficulties. About one in 1000 people have the condition. Ms Laird, who stands 1.47 metres tall, was unaware of the syndrome until her son’s diagnosis in 2013. She and her twin sister were diagnosed with it soon after. “As well as height, growth hormone improves body composition and increases muscle mass. I think that would make everything a bit easier for Morgan,” Ms Laird said. “I knew there was something different about him. Pretty much straight away I noticed a lot of similarities between Morgan and myself. “Morgan’s nearly eight and he’s the size of a five-year-old. He’s just skin and bone. “He doesn’t cope well with movement and he’s not as strong as other kids his age.” Ms Laird said that, like her, Morgan had poor co-ordination, mobility issues and bruised easily. “After confirming my diagnosis, it sort of explained my whole childhood. “My legs sway whenever I sit down, I need a step to reach things in cupboards and when going car shopping, it’s always difficult to find one where you can see clearly out the back window.” Ms Laird said Morgan had yet to complete an eligibility process for growth hormone. Late last year he measured two millimetres outside the criteria for access to the hormone through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. “Kids with this condition are being over-

City’s cancer ‘link’ Continued Countries including the Netherlands, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, and El Salvador have started banning glyphosate. City services general manager William Tieppo said the council currently used Roundup to remove weeds from parks, open spaces and other community assets within the municipality. “Ensuring the health and safety of the community and our employees is a priority and we follow the appropriate safety steps in using the product,” he said. “At this stage there has been no further information from the regulator, WorkSafe, that the product is not to be used. “It is still available for purchase over the counter in all garden supply department stores for trade and general public.”

The Oil Reinery in Geelong has new owners - VIVA
Here are 7 ways VIVA are putting local jobs last 1 VIVA has said that 457 visa workers will be used in Geelong.
2 VIVA has cancelled permanent shipping arrangements –
the first step to using low paid foreign crews to ship 25% of the Geelong refinery production.
3 VIVA has given the Green light to using imported steel in the plant.
4 VIVA has cut back support to
community projects in nearby disadvantaged suburbs in the Corio - Norlane area where over 35% of families are jobless.
5 VIVA's Docklands-based management has ‘talked down’
the Geelong asset that Viva have bought and described the Geelong refinery as ' small and a long way away from markets' in the national media.
6 Since the takeover VIVA has failed to commit to
increasing local employment or apprenticeship numbers at the Geelong refinery.
7 VIVA has put the plant’s
reputation and future jobs at risk with 6 major breaches of the EPA pollution control.
STOP LOCKING OUT LOCALS FROM LOCAL JOBS VIVA's Geelong reinery must put local workers FIRST and put rip-of temporary work visas LAST. Join this union & community campaign to rebuild local jobs and create more apprenticeships at Viva's Geelong reinery. Greens send Pt Lonsdale GP to vie for ALP’s Corio A doctor frustrated with her inability to deliver social justice while confined to a clinic will contest Corio for the Greens at this year’s federal election. The Greens said Sarah Mansfield’s “desire to build a healthier, happier community was the driving force behind her decision to enter politics this year. “As a GP I spend my days listening to people, said Dr Mansfield, who lives at East Geelong and works in a clinic at Point Lonsdale. “I have witnessed first-hand the impacts of unemployment, unaffordable housing and inequality on health and wellbeing. “There’s only so much I can do from a doctor’s surgery. That’s why I decided to step-up and contest the next election. Dr Mansfield said she was chosen to stand for the Greens because she believed in “policies that balance common sense with compassion. Ensuring fairer access to health care was among her “top priorities, she said. “We all have a right to timely and affordable health care. In Geelong the waiting time for some medical services is over three years longer for a public patient compared to a private patient. “Out-of-pocket expenses are also on the rise. It’s deeply troubling. Dr Mansfield would also campaign for new investment in the region, she said. “To really improve wellbeing we need to change the system. Not just health, our region needs new jobs and more public transport. Dr Mansfield planned to officially launch her campaign in Newtown next month. She will take on frontbencher Richard Marles in the safe Labor seat, with the Liberals yet to announce a candidate. Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons has yet to rule out standing as an independent in Corio amid speculation he could seek higher office.
Car salesman wrong-footed Brazen thieves have driven away in a luxury Holden while a salesman’s back was turned at a Geelong dealership. Geelong police have released an image of the black 2003 Statesman which was stolen from a Moorabool Street car yard. The pair of thieves allegedly stole the car on 9 February after making an inquiry about it at the dealership, police said in a Facebook post. “At the time two persons, a male and a female, were looking at the vehicle and the salesperson got the keys to the vehicle for the persons to be able to inspect the vehicle further. “The salesperson was then distracted and during this time the persons have then jumped in the vehicle and driven off with the vehicle. Police asked anyone with information about the alleged theft or the vehicle’s location to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. This week Geelong police also released a list of 21 other stolen cars “outstanding in the region. The list included prestige vehicles including a 2012 Mercedes and a 2008 Audi as well as a 2013 Toyota HiLux.
GREENS: Dr Sarah Mansfield cites a desire to “build a healthier, happier community as her motivation for entering politics.

Govt bodies reap state fire funding
FAREWELL: Jenny Simko delivered an inspiring thank you at last year's RockOff MND concert.
Rocking for research By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A research grant in the name of brave Highton MND sufferer Jenny Simko hopes to find the cause behind the random terminal condition. Mrs Simko lost her battle with MND late last year but not before inspiring attendees at the inaugural RockOff MND concert with a thank-you speech. The concert raised $63,000, which has funded the Jenny Simko MND Research Grant, awarded
to Professor Tracey Dickson of The University of Tasmania. Prof Dickson will investigate whether the loss of a certain type of neuron in the brain known as the interneuron acts as a trigger for MND. Jenny’s husband, Peter, said he hoped the second concert would raise a similar amount so another research grant could be allocated. “We’re trying to target a cause so I am really happy the grant went to a research project looking into possible causes,” Mr Simko said. “So we have to try and beat $63,000 this year so
we can continue to fund the work. “We will all truly miss Jen at this year’s event but we are all determined to do what we can to help find a cause and a cure for this debilitating and terminal disease.” The second concert, headlined by perennial rock favourite Ross Wilson and the Peaceniks, will be held on 5 March at Deakin University’s waterfront campus. Tickets for the event, also featuring The Kite Machine, Benny Walker and Chunky Jam, cost $50 and are available from rockoffmnd.com.au.
A government tourism body and two councils have received $425,000 to help Great Ocean Road businesses bounce back in the wake of the Wye River bushfires. Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism (GORRT) and Surf Coast and Colac Otway shires will use the State Government money for destination marketing, brand asset development, events support and a domestic advertising campaign. Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford said the funding was aimed at stimulating tourism and attracting visitors to the area. “The funding addresses immediate concerns about a potential fall in accommodation bookings and aims to boost visitor numbers in the lead up to Easter and the school holiday period,” she said. “Second to the Christmas-New Year period, Easter is a key time for local tourism related business to generate revenue. “This much-needed funding boost will be critical for local tourism in the lead-up to the Easter holidays. “With the added Jaala Pulford attraction of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, now is a great time to plan a trip to the Great Ocean Road.” GORRT chair Wayne Kayler Thomson said the funds would assist the region and individual destinations to drive tourism from Melbourne and regional Victoria through autumn and winter. “GORRT has worked with industry and community leaders to develop a suite of destination action plans aiming to grow the visitor economy for the region, which benefits destinations in the short term while laying the foundations to build a more sustainable and resilient visitor economy.”

Water heading to drought
BIG DRY: Barwon Water boss Joe Adamski.
Geelong’s water storages have hit their lowest level “since the end of the millennium drought”, Barwon Water has announced. A “drier-than-dry climate scenario” had left the Geelong system at 40 per cent, said managing director Joe Adamski. The level was its lowest since February 2010 when capacity was at 32 per cent. “Each year, Barwon Water prepares a Water Security Outlook that outlines expected storage levels based on a wet, median or dry climate scenario. “Actual levels have now fallen below the dry scenario in each of Barwon Water’s supply areas, including Geelong,” Mr Adamski said. Mr Adamski said Geelong had back-up sources if extremely dry conditions continued, including a borefield and a Melbourne-Gee-
long pipeline. Geelong’s Otway Ranges storage, West Barwon Reservoir, was at 20.9 per cent capacity this week, or 4.5 billion litres, Mr Adamski said. This time last year it was almost 80 per cent full, with 17 billion litres. About 787mm of rain was recorded at the reservoir in 2015, the lowest total since 2006. Below-average rain was recorded in all but two months of the year, January and May. February has so far recorded 12.8mm, 77 per cent below average. West Barwon had received inflows of 30 million litres so far this month compared to the longterm February average of 500 million. Mr Adamski said Barwon Water would continue to monitor storages, forecasts and demand trends.

Clean up conduct unbecoming I am fed up with the carryings on of our elected representatives with their rash pre-election vitriol and promises which, in at least some of instances, they well know can’t be fulfilled. New Malcolm needs to be more like old one It’s not surprising that churches, state premiers and doctors are now exploring avenues to support asylum seekers despite a high court decision validating Australia’s offshore processing regime. Further to Yvonne Adami (Letters, 12 February) and Double Take in the same edition of the Indy, and while acknowledging the need for vetting, the fact remains that 90 per cent of those seeking asylum have legitimate cause. As it now stands, the High Court decision opens the way to potentially return 267, including previously violated women and girls, and babies not born the first time around, to Nauru for more of the same. Malaysia, a UN Refugee Convention non-signatory, has also been touted as an equally abhorrent alternative destination. In an election year, or any other year for that matter, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull needs to take a leaf out of his former counterpart and Liberal colleague Malcolm future elections to be forthright in their pre-election preambles. I believe that election candidates should be called upon to sign a legally enforceable memorandum, a code of conduct, addressing issues such as: · Misleading and deceptive pre-election statements and promises; · Making electoral promises legally enforceable contracts to be discharged in the next term of parliament, unless otherwise clearly stated; · Demanding that their first and foremost loyalty is to their electorate, bar none; · Making their remuneration and allowance package more accurately reflect the public’s expectations and be made more transparent; and that · Failure to adhere to their signed code of con-

A little light rail relief Towns on the Bellarine Peninsula are becoming increasingly attractive to families and retirees seeking a quieter environment away from city and suburban areas. With all the existing and future developments of retail outlets at Leopold, it’s clearly destined to service the growing population of the peninsula. However, no ring road goes around Geelong, so all stock going into peninsula stores must pass through it and all travellers going to Melbourne for work or pleasure must also pass through the city or park at Geelong or South Geelong railway stations. A light-rail system on the peninsula would benefit residents and ease traffic conditions in Geelong while greatly diminishing the number of vehicles parking all day at Geelong and South Geelong stations. Parking at both is already fully utilised. New stations could be established at Leopold and possibly Curlewis, where parking areas could be provided. The light rail could run to South Geelong along a similar route to the one once used by the Queenscliff line. As the journey to South Geelong is short, a single track with a shuttle train running to and fro might be possible because it would reduce the amount of land needed for a rail project. This would mean less driving for peninsula residents, a reduction in traffic through Geelong and more parking available at Geelong and South Geelong stations. Melva Stott Anglesea

Roos out of question for food trial Environment Minister Lisa Neville’s decision to extend a commercial kangaroo pet food trial in Victoria was negligent and merciless because she is fully aware of the inherent cruelty to orphaned joeys in the kangaroo meat and skins industry. A report handed to her late last year revealed how orphaned joeys were simply abandoned and left to die. The report revealed horrific cruelty to pouch-young which were bludgeoned to death and decapitated using practices breaching the industry’s code of practice. The report’s researchers observed shooters swinging joeys by their feet; bashing them with crow bars, against utility trays and rocks; stomping on their heads; decapitating them without stunning; and rarely checking whether joeys were dead. Legal advice provided to Australian Society for Kangaroos described how the research revealed systemic non-compliance with codes of practice and possible breaches of laws governing the kangaroo meat and skins trade. The advice highlighted that the industry and all involved, including landholders and professional shooters, were potentially in breach of the conditions of their licences as well as state and federal wildlife protection laws. State Government data has revealed that in the past two years more than 250,000 female kangaroos have been slaughtered by the industry, leaving hundreds of thousands of orphaned joeys to a cruel death. The Victorian Government’s support to extend the trial shows disregard for the welfare of these iconic native animals and their young. Nikki Sutterby Australian Society for Kangaroos

FINALLY FRIDAY
Not idle, Sebastian is set to snap By ALANA MITCHELSON Guy Sebastian will return to Geelong on his You… Me… Us tour of regional Australia with a new sound in the works and an album on the way. His latest single, Black & Blue, has become his 20th top-20 single since he rose to fame in 2003 after winning the first Australian Idol competition. Sebastian took to the world stage as Australia’s first representative at the Eurovision Song Contest last year, placing fifth in the competitive singing contest with his catchy tune Tonight Again. Sebastian said Eurovision was the most work he had ever put in for a three-minute performance. “There were so many rehearsals to run through and you’re always reminded of the fact that 200 million people will be watching,” he told the Indy. “It opened a lot of doors in Europe. I toured there last year and I’m planning another European tour for later this year. But for now Sebastian said he was simply focussed on “keeping the momentum going with new music”. “I’ve been writing a lot on the road, using my alone time to get creative and map out my new sound for my new album.” Sebastian has developed an interest in photography over the past few years and documented his travels while on tour. “I bought my first DSLR about three or four years ago. It wasn’t too long before I started to get more creative with my shots, experimenting with different angles, light and equipment. “The first time you take a picture through a proper camera with a great lens, I think you sort of see the world in a different way. “Soon my hobby became a habit. Now I travel everywhere with my camera gear. “When you’re touring, you get the opportu-

It takes my mind off the show and music for a little while.” Sebastian also revealed a passion for interior design which has seen him involved in the design of his family home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs over the past two years. “Our home’s been a long time coming. I’ve been working closely with the architect Joe Snell who’s a judge from the TV show House Rules.
“Having a home studio, I’m lucky in that I can work at home among my kids. I can get back to the studio after bath time or throwing the kids around in the pool. “I’m fortunate that my family tends to join me every couple of weeks during Australian tours. The kids have an awesome time and it recharges me. “My kids are three and one now and they’re just really, really cute. My limit for being away from them
is about three weeks, otherwise I’d lose my mind.” The opening song of the new tour begins with Sebastian taking “guitar-looping a step further to a new level”. A stripped-back acoustic section follows as Sebastian shares life experiences including his time at Eurovision. Sebastian plays Costa Hall on Saturday with brother Chris as support act.

Travelling man Dean Ray is looking forward to spending some relaxed time with his band at Motor City Music Festival. “Festivals are fun, they are such a good vibe,” Ray said. “It’s a chance to catch up with fellow musicians because you don’t really get to see them anywhere else. “Audiences are great because they are spending the time at a festival like Motor City for the love of the music. “I love performing on stage. I love being in front of people and experiencing the energy of the live performance. There’s nothing like it and that’s what drives me.” Staying in one place for a while is a welcome change for Ray, often finding himself in a series of towns and falling asleep in a guitar case as a child while mum and dad performed in
their band, Ichy Feet. “My folks travelled so much, they were always moving around. I always get itchy feet,” Ray agreed. Ray toured extensively last year, much of it as a solo artist, but for Motor City Music Festival he is looking forward to reuniting with his band. The changes of scenery help fuel the storytelling songs he pens, part of the country influence of his parents, and help him retain his down-toearth qualities. Ray’s success last year - he had a number-five on the singles chart and a gold album - was boosted when he was runner-up on the sixth season of the X Factor. But the alternative rock and blues artist has since proved he has some X factor all his own. Dean Ray and his band perform on the family fun day Sunday of the festival at 7.15pm leading up to the spectacular fireworks finale at 8.45pm.

Cruising on Denver’s country road By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN The enduring music of John Denver has proved to be an inspiration for fans across the globe, not least New Zealander Bevan Gardiner. Gardiner said he became an almost instant fan when he first heard a John Denver cassette tape when he was seven while travelling on a family holiday. The young Gardiner was so inspired by the purity of Denver’s music that he decided there and then that he wanted to sing and play just like his idol. “I’ve been a fan of John Denver’s for more than 20 years so to now sing his songs is a dream come true,” he said. Gardiner is the voice of Denver in Take Me Home – The Music and Life of John Denver which is now touring nationally. Despite being partially sighted and only seeing people as silhouettes, Gardiner brings a rich and in-depth portrayal of Denver to the stage, backed by a full band. What he lacks in sight Gardiner more than makes up in his ear for music. “It’s a part of nature’s balancing act, I suppose,” Gardiner said. “I am legally blind, something I was born with, and it’s deteriorated since my youth. “But if one sense is taken away then another takes over and the next primary sense is hearing.” Despite a reasonably well-known story, with its Australian connections, Gardiner finds audiences still find new areas of interest in Denver’s life after enjoying the show. “I talk to audiences after the show and they tell me they knew the story to a degree but there are always certain things they didn’t know. “It’s an up and down emotional roller coaster of a show because we go in-depth and we’re open about his life. “Artists of that calibre wear their heart on their

FLAVOURSOME variety on a daily basis, all with that home style cooking Café Lorae is becoming famous for. Whether it’s breakfast, morning tea or lunch, Jo and Damian and their “awesome” team ensure the city’s hungry hordes remain satisfied at an affordable price. “Everything is made fresh daily, including our large range of sandwiches with a variety of breads and fillings, with gluten free and vegan options available,” Jo says. “We have a range of grab and go options for busy workers, so patrons can pop in and know they can have a tasty lunch and a drink for $10.” Some of the popular lines at Café Lorae include the tubs of gourmet garden salads with varieties such as pumpkin and cranberry, chicken Caesar, pasta, bean and crunchy Asian chicken. And it’s worth indulging the sweet tooth oc-
casionally at Café Lorae, with Jo’s raspberry and white chocolate scones walking out the door. “It seems to be a new trend and they have been a bit of a hit. Move over muffins,” Jo laughed. There’s always the cheese and chive, date and plain scones if the raspberry and white chocolate varieties have been snapped up. For those on an early start Café Lorae’s big breakfast will hit the spot, especially the famous eggs Benedict with Hollandaise. Tourists and early starters in the business district will always find a tasty breakfast treat at Café Lorae, with the range of breakfast focaccias and egg and bacon toasties a favourite. Orders can be phoned through on 5229 7858 and the team will have it ready and waiting for pick-up with Café Lorae happily catering for business and social events.

The leaders in excellence Saint Ignatius College Geelong is proud to be the only Catholic co-educational secondary college in the region and a Jesuit partner school, nurturing academic excellence and promoting competence, conscience, compassion and service to others. Its young women and men engage and work together as equals and develop lifelong learning skills. Academic challenge and rigour are fundamental to all curriculum development and student work practices and staff are proud that the college is ranked among the top performing Catholic coeducational colleges in Victoria for VCE results. In traditional Jesuit terminology, cura personalis
aims to provide care and support for each student as a unique and gifted young person. Integral to a Jesuit Catholic education is the provision of opportunities for students to develop leadership, to contribute to local and overseas community service and social justice programs and to engage in immersion experiences in language and culture. It is believed at Saint Ignatius that the servant leadership model is fundamental in developing students’ abilities and is an important aspect of producing men and women for others. Its motto “Saint Ignatius. Inspiring me to be a leader” underpins all the college does.
To cater for the growth in student numbers, at present 1200, plans are underway for an additional sports hall which will have many critical uses including a space to gather as a whole school. In addition, a new year nine centre will accommodate students in a separate precinct providing programs and facilities that are unique to that level. The college invites the community to meet students and staff and discover the rich and varied educational opportunities at its open day on Sunday 20 March from 11am to 2pm with information sessions at 11am and 12.15pm. For details contact the college on 5251 1136.

Learning for their futures
College branches out for progress
With significant and rapid changes in industry, leadership and community and social structures, Geelong College focuses on relevant learning for a future that will be very different to life as we know it. Research suggests that most students at school now will work in jobs that don’t currently exist, will live and work in three different countries and have six career changes. To thrive, they will need to be good decisionmakers, strong communicators, be able to think through major issues, to inquire and solve problems and be ready to show the world what they have to offer. Learning for the future is an exciting prospect for principal Dr Peter Miller. “There are so many opportunities for students and teachers to grow, explore and come up with and test new and exciting ideas to solve big problems in today’s school environment. “At Geelong College we start with a foundation of curiosity and inquiry through our Reggio Emilia inspired Junior School from Early Learning to year three. “Our youngest learners develop independence, curiosity, creativity and deep thinking skills through a range of projects and learning experiences designed by educators based on their interests and passions. This foundation of natural curiosity, good communication and a lifelong love of learning helps to sustain students through their schooling and beyond.” It is this style of learning that the new College Vision for Learning, which identifies and integrates a series of capabilities into all learning experiences, projects and co-curricular opportunities, aims to capture. “We believe that identity, creativity, thinking, communicating, contributing, creating and enterprise are the capabilities young people need to de-
Edu-Kingdom College’s newest branch is about to open in Geelong. This will be the coaching college’s 30th branch since its inception in 2007. Over the course of nine years this rapidly growing tutoring company has seen thousands of students successfully achieve their academic goals and, no doubt, Geelong students will soon share in this success. Whether students are aiming to get higher scores in NAPLAN tests, to get a seat in SEALP, to receive a scholarship or to pass the entrance examination for a selective school, they are all assisted by Edu-Kingdom College teachers and staff who utilise acclaimed materials and a welldesigned curriculum. Students generally face more challenging problem solving questions in their classes rather than simple arithmetic ones. In addition, revision tests are held every 10 weeks to monitor students’ progress. Specialised courses also exist, such as the power writing courses which serve to improve participants’ writing skills. Students in trial test courses can also take advantage of the e-Learning courses at no additional charge. The slogan of Edu-Kingdom College is ‘Fulfil Your Dream’ and it can be seen that students do not only improve their academic levels but they also achieve their goals. A special promotion is running until the end of May 2016 offering a $200 discount to any student who enrols for 20 weeks in three subjects. A free assessment will also be available. For any inquiries, phone 5241 8263.
Choosing nations and cultures to explore in year one. velop to become independent and informed global citizens, and that these must underpin a broad range of learning experiences so that students learn how to learn and are inspired to keep learning throughout their lives,” Dr Miller concluded.
Explore the world through the college’s eyes at its open days on Wednesday 9 March, Wednesday 4 May, Wednesday 10 August or Wednesday 19 October. Visit www.geelongcollege.vic.edu.au.

North Geelong Secondary College is a mid-size single campus school that has a traditional classroom structure supported by an innovative curriculum. The school places high expectations on academic endeavour and student behaviour. Our community works and participates in a friendly and supportive environment that is underpinned by the values of Respect, Excellence, Achievement and Diversity. We support our students in the pursuit of academic excellence and in the development of a belief in self-worth, acceptance of others and a strong sense of community. Our students are privileged to enjoy: · Learning areas equipped with the latest ICT facilities. North Geelong Secondary College is an Apple school, with the latest Apple Macintosh laptops and iPads as well as Smart TVs and Smart Boards · An extensive well-resourced library · Plentiful, state of the art sporting facilities · A creative art and technology complex which caters for food technology, studio art, ceramics and woodwork. The transition from primary to secondary school is seamless for our Year 7 students. Our transition program starts with North Geelong students and teachers visiting primary schools from Grade 3. In Grade 6 all students are invited to the college early in the year for a ‘taste’ of secondary school and then later in the year there is a specialised twoday program that allows students to develop new friendships and familiarise themselves with their new surroundings. Students start the secondary school year with confidence. In Year 7, students have a significant teacher who starts each day with them in home group and
is also their English and Humanities teacher or Maths and Science teacher. This teacher plays a major role, supporting and dealing with pastoral care matters that may arise during the year. Students at Year 7 have the majority of their classes in a specialised area. An integral part of our transition program is the Year 7 camp. The camp experience allows students and staff to build positive relationships in a fun learning environment. The college’s scholarship program promotes and recognises outstanding commitment by primary school students who have displayed a strong involvement in their school community. The college looks for exemplary young people who are exceptional in different areas and possess personal qualities and values that will contribute to the life of North Geelong Secondary College. Scholarships are available in the following areas: Leadership, Community, Academic Excellence, Sporting Excellence and The Arts. To find out more, a detailed information pack is available. Personalised school tours can be booked and you are invited to the annual open night on Wednesday 23 March at 6pm. Please contact the college office on 03 5240 5800, email us at north.geelong.sc@edumail.vic. gov.au, like us on facebook at northgeelongsc or visit our website www.ngsc.vic.edu.au

It’s all about effective development Bell Park North is a well-established P-6 school servicing the Geelong suburb of Bell Park. We strongly believe that effective teaching and learning is essential to the ongoing development of all children in preparing them for their future. The teaching and learning philosophy of all staff is aligned to the specific needs of each student using multi-disciplinary approaches and preferred learning styles which reflect current and technological trends. We demonstrate academic rigour and excellence, which we instil by setting high expectations and delivering all learning experiences at a high standard. This encourages students to develop into self-
disciplined, self-regulated, knowledgeable independent learners. We have risen to the challenge of staying abreast of technological trends to maintain a whole school focus on ICT as a curriculum tool within the classroom to support children’s learning. We maintain a strong focus on continuing improvement in the areas of literacy and numeracy. We are extremely proud of the growth our children make. Our positive school based programs and learning and leadership opportunities assist students in becoming resilient, effective team members who are able to integrate and deal with all situations.
We are proud to be a ‘KidsMatter’ and ‘Healthy Achievement School’ where we support the mental and physical health and well-being of every member of our school community. At Bell Park North Primary School we applaud the commitment and dedication of each and every member of our school community whose dedication, hard work and support make our school the successful learning environment it is today. It’s the personal touch that sets Keleman Motors apart. Gary Keleman has been in the business since 1982, so he must be doing something right. His care and attention to detail has enhanced his hard-won reputation in the car repair trade. The personal service includes a drop off and pick up service to the city. Gary is known as a Mazda specialist but his tried and true slogan, ‘Anything on any car’, sums up his approach. “We do all major and minor repairs, including exhaust, brakes, clutches and suspension,” Gary ex-plains. “Plus we do the full range of upgrades and servicing, including air-conditioner re-gassing.” Gary and Mazda go back a long way, including his top qualifications in the repair and servicing of the famous rotary engine. Gary uses only genuine parts in his new-car re-pair and servicing work. “This way our customers can be sure their factory warranties are not affected.” He says customers should be able to receive deal-er level service without paying dealer level prices. “We’re always happy to give a quote so the customer knows exactly what they are up for,” he says. Gary’s workshop boasts the latest in diagnostic and scanner equipment. “We’re proud of the quality of all work we under-take and our competitive rates.” Keleman Motors is at shop 3, 13 Crown St, South Geelong, phone 5229 9555.

With one game left to play in Victorian Premier Cricket this season, Geelong will seek to continue its recent run of good form against Kingston Hawthorn after a fantastic win against Greenvale last Saturday. In pursuit of the Kangaroos 293, the Cats began disastrously, falling to 2/31 early. But skipper Eammon Vines dug deep and in an innings of high concentration over four hours racked up a match winning 117 to show why he is still regarded as a big chance to play higher in the not-too-distant future. He received good support from Meyrick Buchanan (85) and Hayden Butterworth (62 not out) as the Cats eventually cruised to a commanding five-wicket win. Coach Andre Borovec will be pleased that the building blocks he put in place early in the season are starting to pay off and will know that a win in their final game of the season will go a long way to a positive pre-season for his young side. In the Geelong Cricket Association, Lara looks like heading into the finals in good form holding East Belmont to just 8/188 declared before wiping 21 runs off the deficit from its three overs at the crease. On a wicket that favoured the bowlers for most of the day, Andrew Baars stood firm with 55 in a four-hour stay at the crease while even Matt Lineker, who normally makes it look easy, struggled to get a feel for the conditions in his 49. For the Cats, Danny Hughes consistently hit the seam to take 4/47 while Luke Wilson enjoyed the bouncy conditions to claim 2/50. Dave Lineen managed to snag a late wicket for the Lions as Lara reached 1/21 at stumps but will need to take a few early ones on Saturday if he wants his side to go into the finals with winning form. In division two it was wickets galore as some of the teams which fancied to play a big role in the finals could only manage some very low scores. Modewarre was bundled out for just 84 by Highton thanks to Zac Smith’s 7/17. In reply the Heat lost both openers early but Michael Kenneady ensured it would take the points with a blistering unbeaten century. Across at Marshall, the reigning premiers would have hoped to enjoy some good batting practice prior to finals however Bell Park had other ideas as it ran through its hosts for just 103. Mitch Trask was the destroyer taking 6/28. Marshall did fight back to reduce Bell Park to 9/129 at stumps but the damage was done and unless it can pull off a rare backdoor outright it will find itself finishing a bit lower on the table than it would have hoped. And in division three, premiership favourites Shelford will have the perfect test run before the finals as has been set 248 to win by Guild St Marys. Jeewan De Silva made an impressive 120 in his last game for the club while for Shelford veteran Shane Lymer took the bowling honours with 3/77. It won’t be an easy run chase, though, as De Silva is one of the premier bowlers in the competition with his crafty spin. If Shelford can get these runs, its premiership odds will come right in.
Anglers found improved snapper fishing off Clifton Springs over the past week. The standout captures came from the Wilson Spit, with fish to 4kg common. Tide changes in conjunction with sunrise or sunset fished best. Anglers caught squid while drifting over the shallow grass beds off Clifton Springs. Small Ika jigs worked well. Land-based anglers also got among the action at Clifton Springs, banking some impressive flathead to just over 50cm while wading the shallows and casting soft plastics. Antone Kruzl fished off the rocks at Limeburner’s Point on Monday night, soon catching whiting on his squid baits. He finished with eight whiting to 35cm, noting that all were full with his pilchard berley. Whiting dominated catches at St Leonards where the area known as Burke Street was reliable. The deeper water also held gummy shark and snapper for persistent anglers while squid were taken from the pier on small jibs in the evenings. Tackleworld’s Michael Moore fished with Ben Mclean out of Queenscliff on Saturday afternoon. The pair boated a bag of whiting to 45cm on tenderised cuttlefish. Australian salmon kept anglers using lures busy offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads with large schools erupting on the surface. The fish were sometimes finicky but specimens reaching 2.5kg made the effort worthwhile. Dylan Pace and Matt Alsop fished out deep in ideal conditions on Monday afternoon. Drifting slowly, their fresh slimy mackerel bait enticed a 112cm school shark and the guys also caught some nice tiger flathead. The Barwon River estuary continued producing good numbers of silver trevally. Small baits caught fish to 40cm. Anglers who waded out to fish the deeper sections caught whiting to 35cm near the Ocean Grove boat ramp. Down in the Western District, Port Fairy to Portland produced excellent numbers of southern bluefin tuna to 25kg along with kingfish reaching 10kg. Casting large soft plastics into the commotion worked well while trolled Rapala XRap lures caught fish holding deep. Freshwater anglers caught Chinook salmon at Lake Bullen Merri. Trolling deep-diving lures or fishing lightly weighted baits did the job. The odd rainbow trout was also reported taking the same baits and lures as the salmon. Carp were banked from the Barwon River, with some impressive-sized models recorded. Super sweet corn kernels or garden worms were top baits when fished on light running-sinker rigs. Next week anglers should continue searching for kingfish off Barwon Heads and in the Rip, either jigging or trolling.

HE’S IN: Patrick Dangerfield limbers up at training this week ahead of his first game in Cats colours.
ASSISTANT: Blake Caracella addresses this week’s Cats media conference.
Coaches keen to see some action By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong’s coaching staff is eager to see Patrick Dangerfield in action in his first game for his new club against Collingwood on Friday night at Simonds Stadium. Assistant coach Blake Caracella confirmed that Dangerfield would play but was coy over how much game time he would see. “He’ll play as much as he can,” Caracella said. “I’m looking forward to Patty, he’s been fantastic since he came across, his leadership and respect for the Geelong Football Club has been fantastic.” The former Adelaide Crows midfield star has made an immediate impression at Geelong being elevated straight into the leadership group. “To see how he combines with the young guys and the older guys who have been here for so long as well is going to be exciting for the club,” Caracella said. He has a wealth of knowledge about the game and he’s a leader of men and fits right in with the others in the (leadership) group.
“He’s come in since day one and shown the way. He’s taught our players and upholds the values we look highly upon.” Caracella said the main outcome for Geelong from the NAB Challenge would be seeing how all the new players combine with each other. “We’ve got four new recruits and a bunch of young fellas and we’ve got three games to work that out,” he said. “We hope they can all play in one team, we’ve got three games to find out what our best combination is, but the problem is a good one to have. Round one of the NAB Challenge is not our best team. There are reasons why some players are playing this week and some playing next week.” He said coaches would be watching to see how Geelong’s beefed up midfield improves in its hard ball gets. “Collingwood are very good around the ball and we have to make sure we get hold of the ball which we haven’t done well the last three or four seasons.” Caracella confirmed the club was still hopeful of having captain Joel Selwood available for round one against Hawthorn.
North Geelong hoping for payback By JOSIP FILIC The scene is set for round two NPL action between North Geelong and Werribee this Saturday at Elcho Park. Their last encounter was the final round of 2015 where the Warriors came away from the tense encounter 2-0 to earn a relegation playoff against Melbourne Victory Youth. Last week Werribee blew a 3-1 lead against Whittlesea to come away with a 3-3 draw where Whittlesea managed to nudge in a 95th minute leveller. North Geelong, however, came from behind for a 1-1 draw at St Albans in a solid display against a tough opponent. St Albans started the match with swift counter attacking and had two early chances to Joseph Monek and Teddy Yabio denied by solid keeping from Daniel Zilic. The Warriors midfield wasn’t able to control proceedings until after 30 minutes and when they did they combined to release Nicholas Jurcic through on goal but the flanker was dubiously adjudged offside on his way to goal. In the second half the Warriors took control with Simms and Cichello controlling the tempo, offering wingers Rudi Saglam and Jurcic openings, but their efforts as well as a gilt edged one to striker Gareth Richards were thwarted by a tight Saints defence. Michael Anderson came on with 20 minutes left and created space for his weaving runs, however it was one of those runs that led to goal for St Albans. Anderson lost possession in attack to Andrew
OVER HE GOES: Alex Baird upends the Warriors’ Nicholas Jurcic for the penalty as Ben Shaper looks on. Picture: IVAN DUGANDZIC Milicevic who found Monek via a long through ball beating Zilic in the process to finish for the lead. The Warriors struck back quickly, Jurcic continuing his good form summoned the ball wide on the left from Matt Thorne and charged into the box where he was up ended for a penalty by the Saints keeper Alex Baird. Skipper Matt Townley stepped up and converted to level the scores. The final minutes saw both sides threatening a late winner however it didn’t eventuate and a point each was a fair outcome. Coach Micky Colina was satisfied with his side’s effort and now looks forward to the first home match against Werribee on Saturday.
