City of Casey Balla Balla Ward Councillor Geoff Ablett said “Council believes the proposed changes are not extensive enough, with the state-wide exemption for the use of existing buildings for shared housing remaining in place and Council still unable to consider the full potential impacts on residents’ amenity as part of the application process. THE irony was too much for Zoe – she couldn’t stop the tears from falling. It was May 2010 and the 29-year-old from Endeavour Hills was visiting her Greek relatives in Athens, a mere two weeks after she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Soon her uncle dug out an old Dandenong Journal article, cut from a 1988 edition. Although the paper had yellowed with time, there was something timeless about the photo of 19-month-old Zoe Angourias-Verlin showing a beaming smile and clutching a teddy bear almost the same size as she was. The article was about one-year-old Zoe taking part in a baby show fundraiser – for multiple sclerosis. “I cried, I actually cried, because it was so ironic,” Zoe told Star News this week. Almost three decades after she took part in one fundraiser, Zoe will be participating in another when she has her hair cut for the World’s Greatest Shave. Zoe sees it as the least she can do. She knows what it feels like to be diagnosed with an illness that changes one’s whole outlook on life. When the left side of her body went numb six years ago, Zoe was convinced she had a brain tumour. The truth – MS – wasn’t any better. “It’s changed a lot of things, I’m constantly on medication,” she said. “It’s the little things, it’s unpredictable. I don’t know if I’m going to wake up tomorrow and feel great or wake up and my legs don’t work.” When Zoe spoke to Star News on Thursday, her right eye has been blurry for three weeks. “I have constant battles with fatigue and numbness,” she said. “I have difficulty walking, I have to use a stick – I was actually walking with a frame the other day.” As if that wasn’t enough, Zoe can’t feel her finger tips at all. But what she can feel is the ongoing

Prestige car kids in court YOUTHS arrested over the spate of home invasions and aggravated burglaries, which targeted luxury cars throughout the south-east, will face the Melbourne and Dandenong Children’s Courts. Investigators from Dandenong Embona Taskforce have charged one youth from Dandenong who has been bailed for offences including aggravated burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, handling stolen goods and possession of offensive weapons. Three youths from Pakenham, two youths from Frankston and one youth from Dandenong have been remanded in custody. The series of car thefts occurred between Friday 19 and Saturday 20 February and spanned Keysborough, Berwick, Narre Warren South and Wheelers Hill.
Detective Sergeant Ivan Bobetic from the Dandenong Embona Taskforce said investigations into the car thefts and possible links to the notorious so-called Apex Gang remained ongoing. “It’s certainly an avenue of inquiry - it appears the ‘Apex Gang’ is so widespread now, however to categorise them as a group or gang is folly at this point in time, it’s just something that we’ve got in the back of our minds and are exploring as part of the investigation,” Sgt Bobetic said. “This type of offending has been occurring for 18 months to two years but not all are related to this group of offenders,” he added. The group arrested for offences reported over the past two to three weeks are all under 18 years old, but Sgt Bobetic said a range of different groups and ages were involved in the burglar-
ies to some degree. “A lot of them are known to each other,” he said. “The level of violence and lack of contrition is alarming for their ages it seems they have no concept of what they are doing, conscience for the victims or they simply don’t care.” Sgt Bobetic said the thefts and home invasions seemed to occur in the early hours of the morning and urged anyone who saw people loitering around their home or neighbour’s house to call triple zero immediately. “It’s a sad day when you can’t leave your car keys on your kitchen bench,” he said. The recent car thefts all occurred overnight and detectives received nine reports of aggravated burglaries between 6am and 7.45am on Saturday 20 February. A 2015 black Mercedes Benz coupe
was stolen from Berwick about 6am, while a 2015 grey Mercedes wagon was stolen from Berwick about an hour later. Sometime between 1am and 7am on Saturday, a 2010 black BMW X5 wagon was stolen in Keysborough, and a 2006 blue Holden Statesman was stolen in Narre Warren South between 1.30am and 8.40am. A 2015 white Volkswagen Golf was also stolen from Wheelers Hill between 2am and 3am on Saturday. Sgt Bobetic said police had recovered some of cars since the weekend. “There were a number of home invasions committed and vehicles and personal property and electrical equipment was also stolen and we are making inquiries to recover that property.” He added that the cars were often found to be burnt out or dumped on the side of the road.
CFA is a top career for Hallam stalwart By LACHLAN MOORHEAD MICHAEL Lia may be quietly spoken but his words are succinct. “The most important turn is whether to go right or left out of the station,” he said. The 60-year-old senior station officer at the Hallam CFA is a stalwart of both the local brigade and the surrounding suburbs, having spent most of his life living in Doveton and the surrounds. After more than 30 years with the CFA, Mick - as he affectionately known by his comrades - is showing no signs of slowing down, being as passionate about the brigade and protecting the region as he was when he first began as a volunteer in the early 1980s. “It’s the best job I’ve ever had,” he said. Mick first volunteered with the Doveton CFA in 1982 before gaining employment as a career firefighter the next year, which saw him work at a number of stations including Boronia, Springvale and Dandenong. Mick had already been working in the earth-moving industry for 10 years before turning to the CFA for his next challenge. “My dad was a policeman and I watched the hours and the shift work and thought that wasn’t t for me,” he said. “But I had a neighbour in Doveton, he was with the local footy club as a trainer and he was also a senior firefighter with the MFB. “I had a few chats with him and
thought this sounds like a nice stable career.” He was about 19 when he had that chat with his neighbour but it wasn’t until several years later that Mick began with the CFA. And while he’s served at many stations, he was inevitably drawn back to Doveton and later the new station at Hallam, which has now been up and running for more than a decade. Mick’s a bit of a history buff when it comes to the local station. First there was the Hallam rural brigade, built in 1947, then the Doveton Brigade took over in October 1959, which was later replaced 11 years ago by the Hallam CFA, which currently sits along Belgrave-Hallam Road and houses both career and volunteer firefighters - about 30 and 20 respectively. Mick said the Doveton brigade was set up following a request from those who were overseeing the big local factories at the time. “It was created because the three industries along the highway - Heinz, GMH and International Trucks - those American companies wanted a fire service that had paid firefighters, that was their requirements,” he said. And when those factories eventually closed, it not only had a flow-on affect for local jobs, but Mick noted that it became much harder to find shift workers who would be willing work the more obscure hours at the CFA. It’s not the only change he has seen, with Mick noting the positive influence of having more women want-
“At this point if you own a luxury car, we suggest locking it away out of sight and for people to be vigilant - residents need to be alert, not alarmed,” he said. Police are still investigating the motives behind the spate of car thefts but Sgt Bobetic said the risk of a disturbed homeowner waking up and getting hurt during a home invasion was a major concern. “We ask people to comply with them and their demands and not to take them on. Get them out of the house as quickly as possible and then call police,” he said. Investigations are ongoing, with further suspects expected to be arrested and charged in the coming days. Anyone with any information in relation to this series of offences is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
IN BRIEF Failed break-in A WINDOW was smashed in daylight at a residential address in Endeavour Hills in an attempted burglary. Would-be raiders tried to gain entry to the property on William Hovell Drive on Friday 19 February. A rear window was broken which activated an alarm. Nothing was stolen and police are appealing for witnesses.
Failed break-in AN EMERGENCY door was damaged in an attempted burglary in Hallam last week. The unsuccessful raiders attended the property on Hallam Road between Wednesday 17 February and the early hours of the following day. Mick also said the CFA now had more responsibilities, in addition to the fires and car accidents, the latter of which make up many of the incidents that the Hallam crew is called out to in Casey. The CFA units are also called to Emergency Medical Response (EMR) incidents. The Hallam CFA receives 1800 to 2000 calls a year, with the EMR program adding to the call rate, which sees CFA firefighters now called out for medical support and required to

This irritating condition, often causing uncomfortable face flushing can be safely treated with almost no downtime. Sun damage: Skin aging is accelerated by sun exposure and decreased production of collagen. For the removal of age spots, uneven pigmentation and diffuse redness, our lasers offer the latest technology available. Facial treatments are most popular but most body areas can be treated including neck, chest and backs of hands. Treatment of sun damaged skin helps to keep a younger and fresher look and most skin types can be treated. Acne: A common skin disease of teenagers, often affecting the face, neck, chest, shoulders and back, associated with overproduction of sebum (oily substance). Treatment is effective by slowing down the production of the sebum, with a typical course of therapy being four treatments at three weeks apart. Vascular lesions: These lesions can include port wine stains, broken capillaries, diffuse redness, haemangioma and cherry angioma. They can occur in many sizes and shapes and can be found all over the body. Most skin types are easily treated with the correct energy output for your individual complexion.
WHAT’S NEW: Skin resurfacing: Fractional laser for skin resurfacing is available to treat light and dark skin, knock out those deepest wrinkles, improve the most challenging scars and help correct a variety of other skin imperfections. Treatments are well tolerated without lengthy recovery times. Leg Veins: As we age valves in our leg veins become less efficient, so less blood is pumped back from the legs. this means blood vessels in our legs become larger, darker and more visible. Smaller vessels can be improved by Nd:Yag laser using a precisely calculated pulse of laser energy directed to the leg vein vessel being treated Glycolic Peels: If laser therapy is not for you there are other options! Glycolic Peels are a specific technique for skin renewal that help remove the damaged layer of surface skin cells revealing fresh skin, stimulating cell turnover and encouraging anti-aging effects in the skin layers. A series of glycolic acid peels can help the skin appear healthier, smoother, plumper, firmer, less oily and more even toned. All treatments are tailored to the individual and are safe, effective and affordable! Dandenong Dermatology Centre offers your first assessment consultation for free! NARRE Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said he makes “no apology” for going on a $58,000 trip to Europe funded by the taxpayer. According to a report in the Australian, which cites documents posted on the Department of Economic Development website, Mr Donnellan, also the state’s Roads and Ports Minister, and his chief of staff accrued costs of $58,168 on their European trip which included visits to England and Sweden. This reportedly consisted of $30,000 on airfares and $17,000
in accommodation. The 11-day trip in September also included a three-day cycling tour in The Netherlands, which was criticised recently by the Opposition. It’s understood Mr Donnellan’s London visit was to see integrated transport planning and address a road safety forum, while the Swedish leg was also for road safety talks. Mr Donnellan said there was “no better place” to apply what he learnt in Europe than in his Narre Warren North electorate. “International travel can provide highly beneficial insights that we can use here in Victoria,
such as how we might make our roads safer and how we continue to cater for our growing city and state as our roads get busier,” Mr Donnellan said. “There’s no better place to apply what I learnt in Europe than in my electorate, which has seen one of the fastest growing populations in Melbourne in recent years. “I don’t intend to travel overseas on a regular basis, but I make no apology for bringing what I learnt from this trip back home and applying it here in the south-east and in other key areas of this city and state to ensure that Victoria remains a great place to live.”

A KITTENS strip club security guard has denied charges of stalking and threatening a stripper by pressing an illegal handgun against her face. Patrick Iaulualo, 21, of Hampton Park allegedly admitted to police to owning the unregistered .22 calibre gun and 150 rounds of matching ammunition found in his car’s back seat, a court bail hearing was told on 22 February. Iaulualo told police he was armed out of fear of outlaw motorcycle gang members after shots were fired at his South Melbourne workplace in November. He denied the 19-year-old stripper’s claims they had a brief affair, and that after its demise he stalked, threatened to kill and pulled a gun on her on Australia Day night. Iaulualo counter-claimed that the victim was his “obsessed” stalker. Detective Senior Constable Craig Dergacz, of Casey CIU, told the court that the married fatherof-two phoned the alleged victim, then visited her at a Hallam house that night. CCTV footage showed Iaulualo driving up and down the street several times before visiting the former work colleague. The victim agreed to speak in Iaulualo’s car, where he allegedly pulled the gun and placed the barrel against her face, Det Sen Const Dergacz said. He pressed a button and activated a red laser on the weapon, the victim told police. At that stage, the victim allegedly feared she would be shot and begged to go home. Fifteen minutes later, Iaulualo followed the victim’s car, Det Sen Const Dergacz said. During the drive, he rang to say: “I feel like I’m letting you go too easy”. He allegedly instructed her to pull into a servo or he’d shoot her tyres. CCTV footage showed the accused approach the victim’s car and sit in the passenger seat. Iaulualo was later seen pacing up and down as he was locked out of the service station.
The following day, police intercepted Iaulualo in his car with the loaded gun and ammunition. In court, defence lawyer Roona Nida said the “alleged victim” was “lying”. “The worker was interested in spending time with him. They just went to McDonald’s to dinner after work. “He noticed the victim was becoming obsessed. He said to her that he couldn’t spend time with her because it was against the policy of the club.” Ms Nida said Iaulualo became “worried and confused” after being told by the victim that “your life is at risk”. He visited her at her ex-boyfriend’s house to find out what she meant by the comment, Ms Nida said. “My client has denied having the gun that day. A few weeks earlier she saw the gun in his car.” At the service station, Iaulualo was agitated when shown a text from ‘Mick’ - a name that the accused recognised as a bikie gang member. Iaulualo’s wife testified that she and the children were hastily booked into a Dandenong hotel that night because the accused was “scared someone will run through the house”. She said Iaulualo believed someone was following him and would “hurt us”. In arguing for bail, Ms Nida said the victim had apologetically texted Iaulualo’s mother since the incident, wishing she “could do something about it”. Det Sen Const Dergacz told the court the victim had been pressured by the accused’s family and friends into withdrawing the charges - in apparent breach of an intervention order. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell noted Iaulualo’s supportive family in court, that he was just 15 when he committed his only prior offence of armed robbery, and had independent referees vouching for his character. She refused bail because of the “serious nature” of the charges. Iaulualo will reappear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 March.

THREE years ago Berwick mum Carolyn King took a handful of sleeping tablets in an attempt to end her life, having battled depression and low self-esteem. Her journal of notes on her darkest days in the form of a book is there to be shared with those battling depression. Ms King’s easy read is titled, ‘Empowered Happiness - Discovering Bliss Beyond Depression,’ and it all started with her damaging thoughts, “I don’t want to be here”. “I hit rock bottom, I didn’t consciously say I wanted to die, I just didn’t want to be here, I didn’t have the capacity to think deeply about it, I just wanted to get away,” Ms King said. It was her husband, Lloyd, who found her in the tragic state, but it was Ms King who picked herself up again. “Lloyd discovered the tablets I had taken weren’t that strong and that was the turning point, I think it scared me that I had actually thought about finishing my life,” Ms King said. Factors that led to Ms King’s despair included hormonal inbalances after giving birth to her two children, Aaliyah, 10, and Jordan, 8, and her constant confidence issues stemming from childhood. “All my life I have had a problem with my self-esteem, and I wasn’t aware of the hormonal changes I was going through after my second child, but I knew I had a problem, I just didn’t know how to fix it,” she said. “At the time I was getting a lot of attention from people, and I would whinge about it.”

Bunjil means business By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE words ‘bunjil’ and ‘business’ proved synonymous last week. Representatives from more than 130 businesses visited Casey council chambers on Monday 22 February for a special information session about the $125 million Bunjil Place project. A number of local traders, manufacturers and suppliers metww with representatives from Brookfield Multiplex which was recently awarded the contract to build the new facility, while a number of major sub-contractors - including plumbing, electrical, climate control and civil works representatives - were available for discussion. One of these local traders was Adam Downes, the owner of Charisma Coffee Vans, who knows how much tradies like their coffee and saw a business opportunity to provide caffeine to those people working on the Bunjil construction in the coming months. With his business label emblazoned on his polo shirt, Mr Downes attended the information session to introduce himself to the Brookfield representatives and make his pitch. “It seems like a great opportunity, there’s a lot of demand with workers for coffee, Mr Downes told Star News. “Workers need fuel to keep going and I’m sure most people love a coffee. “So that’s the main reason that I’m here, to meet some new people within the local area as
well and generate some business that way. As well as the need for coffee, pieces of art were also championed at the information morning. Miranda Super from Paint a Pot in Narre Warren attended the event to speak to council staff about potentially having art work displayed in Bunjil Place once the facility was completed. With a number of her mother’s art works in tow, Ms Super spoke about her idea. “We’d like to do two things, we’d like to put a resin piece in Bunjil, so a large-scale piece that represents the build and the colours around Narre Warren, she said. “But we also specialise in community projects so what we’d love to do is get all the local schools involved in a project that could be something like painting tiles of things that they feel represent the local area and this new building that we’re getting. “And then have a mural put up outside or inside this building. Ellis Air Construction Manager Grant Hillman was one of several sub-contractors at the information session who spoke to traders, noting how the project differed to others his company has worked on. “Ellis has been involved with this since the early days of tendering, which for a job like this it’s probably six months ago, he said. “This is probably a mid-size project for us but it’s an interesting one because it’s got a bit of everything, there are not many jobs around like this at the mo-

ment. “Just the fact that it’s got so many different types of spaces, office spaces, council chambers, you’ve got a theatre so it makes it interesting for all the guys that work for us. Bunjil Place Project Director Steve Dalton said as the project progresses, he expected Brookfield Multiplex and its sub-contractors to source many materials and services locally. “One hundred and eighty four businesses registered their interest in the project with us and 131 walked through the doors yesterday, he said on Tuesday. “Of these, 38 per cent were from Casey and Cardinia, 22 per cent from Dandenong and about 40 per cent were from a bit further afield, proving that Mel-

the project construction from a variety of industries including sustainable energy, furniture, audio visual, plastics, textiles, timber, signage, catering, paint, event management, safety gear and more.
Hallam station fails test HALLAM has been ranked Victoria’s secondworst train station, according to data released by the RACV. More than 17,800 commuters participated in the 2015 News on Track survey, which asked passengers about the biggest problems with their train travel. Hallam station was ranked second worst in the state with a score of 5.40 out of 10, behind only Aircraft station which scored 4.86. Fifty-three per cent of passengers surveyed said they had difficulty finding a station carpark, 33 per cent said they were concerned about toilet facilities and 30 per cent said they felt unsafe at the station at certain times of day. Forty-nine per cent of respondents said lack of seating was a concern, 47 per cent said the trains were overcrowded and 46 per cent had issues with trains not running on time. RACV’s manager of Public Transport and Mobility Thanuja Gunatillake said it was alarming to note that passengers’ concerns about train station parking, toilets and safety had not shown any signs of diminishing.

Sugar coated quality makes for a superb marriage By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE first thing visitors notice in VIP Kitchens is the aquarium of live foods - lobsters, black-lip abalone and barramundi. They’re top of the list of this Springvale traditional Chinese-Vietnamese restaurant’s voluminous 158item menu of seafood, duck, pork belly and other meats. What also catches the eye are the round 30-centimetre-deep slabs of wood which are used as chopping boards. In the front window hang barbecued ducks which are sliced on one of these logs right in front of customers’ eyes. The broadly smiling proprietor Vay Luong said he loves the soft sound of knife on these slabs, which were imported for $300 each from China.
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL There’s no denying his adherence to quality. His most popular dish is the mud crab udon noodle soup - a superb marriage of a soft-fleshed mud crab from Darwin, brewing in a bisque which is lightly seasoned by salts from the sea. Each day, the kitchen cooks 30 ducks coated with a film of sugar. The ducks bake inside tall gas-fired cylinders for an hour until the sugar’s pink colour darkens to a crisp. Another menu highlight is a dozen slices of duck served next to an eggnoodle and bok choy filled chicken
broth that stews for six hours. Banquets of 10 are served in the restaurant’s VIP area. At the excellent price of $45 a head, a feast of soup, steamed oyster, mud crab, steamed barramundi, chicken, sea cucumber hot pot, barbecued pork or duck, sweet-and-sour pork, sizzling beef in pepper sauce, stir-fried vegies and rice is served. Luong and business partner Anna Phan took over and renamed the dining institution Tan Lac Vien six months ago. Mr Luong had been working in hospitality for 30 years before taking on his own restaurant. “I passed this restaurant each day while working in the area here. “Then I finally made them an offer.” As a 19-year-old refugee when he arrived from Vietnam in 1978, Mr Luong started his working life in a factory.
But that workplace wasn’t fun, didn’t have the feeling of family that he enjoys about working in a kitchen. VIP Kitchens is at Shop 2, 310 Springvale Road, Springvale, and is open seven days a week from 10am10pm. Phone 8899 6646.
decimal machines were ready at all checkouts and staff members loaded up their tills with the new money. Business was brisk for decimal stamps at Dandenong Post Office. 20 years ago 26 February 1996 Blitz on Crimes Crime rate down and thieves run for cover Car thieves and burglars are ducking for cover following a massive blitz on Dandenong’s “regular crims”. Dandenong police have this month gone undercover, swarming the district in a bid to stamp out home burglaries and car thefts. The district’s crime rate has already taken a dive since the appointment of the special duties unit in January. Last month reported crime dropped 20 per cent on the previ-
ous month, from 1073 to 807. Detective Senior Sergeant Nick Vallas said Dandenong Police district was “on target” for a further decrease this month flowing the introduction of a major operation code named Operation Ruby. 5 years ago 28 February 2011 Back to School The first day of term one can be daunting for young students. Ashley Bucci has just gone back to school. But unlike most students, he is returning to study at 36 years of age and pursuing a totally new career. Mr Bucci is doing a certificate three in commercial cooking and patisserie at Dandenong Chisholm TAFE to achieve his long-time goal of owing a restaurant or cafe.

50 years ago 15 February 1966 Dandenong made it Dollars and Sense - That was C-Day Dandenong accepted conversion day with the same undisturbed calm with which the whole state greeted the introduction of 10 o’clock closing. There were not runs on the banks, no panic-buying in the shops, no noteworthy changes from the even routine of a normal Monday in the year. “The people were too well indoctrinated. The publicity campaign conducted by the banks and the Government in the press and on the radio has had its effect,” was the comment of Mr Arthur Pullan, manager of the Commonwealth Bank in Dandenong. Teachers aren’t immune from those first day nerves either. The start of term one marked a big change for graduate teacher James Meade. He went from being a full-time university student to being a fulltime teacher - a total role reversal. Five-year-old Aaliya Ally knows all about making friends at school. Some days she would like to be back to kinder, but she is enjoying being in Prep and having new friends to play with. However, her mother Tasneeem has found the last month difficult. Aaliya was the last of her three children to start school. “It’s a bit weird at the moment but I think I will enjoy it eventually,” said Mrs Ally. - Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… LIEUTENANT Chris Mason from the Warneet/Blind Bight Fire Brigade is off to Tasmania to help out with the ongoing bushfire effort. He got the call on Saturday 20 February. The CFA posted the news on its Facebook page, adding: “You’re doing us all proud!!”

A STAR News journalist and photographer had a fun morning out last week when they wandered down to the Berwick Men’s Shed at Akoonah Park. As well as chatting with the members, the reporter and photographer also had a lovely walk through the workshop, where the shed members were busy toiling away on their wood craft and other knick-knacks.

A WARNING to any would-be picnickers in Dandenong Park: steer clear from sitting on the ground under any trees. A well-filled patron gave the Journal an unwelcome eyeful as he got up from a bench and relieved himself under one of the park’s old trees. For the record, the
DURING an interview this week it came to one journalist’s attention that a certain local identity, who fancies himself a bit of an actor, was actually in a mem-

The photographer was in such a hurry that he ended up locking his keys in the car. Safe to say it took a bit longer to get the photographs back to base. ROXANNE had to turn her red light off this week. When police closed off a street in Dandenong one night, a local proprietor inquired with the gathered photographers how long it would take for things to go back to normal. She said she had a business nearby and none of her clientele would be able to access the facility. The quick-thinking manager ended up taking her ladies to McDonald’s for a meal. So what business operates after 9pm at night? We’ll leave that one for you to figure out.
GOLFING on the green - is there a better way to spend an afternoon? Certainly not in the eyes of Harry Hornstra and the members of the Endeavours Hills Rotary Club who held their annual Golf Day on Monday 22 February at Cranbourne. Keen Rotarians and golfers alike turned out at the event, which will see proceeds go back into local community organisations such as the Andrews Centre. 150459

IT WAS a case of the captain’s call at Mossgiel Park Primary School. The new leaders at the Endeavour Hills school were formally presented with their leadership badges at a special ceremony on Monday 22 February attended by Casey Mayor Sam Aziz. The new school captains Sonya, Nithin, Isuri and George were among those young leaders who were recognised on the day. It comes as the new captains at James Cook Primary School were awarded their badges last week. Four school captains, eight house captains and a number of student representatives and specialist captains were presented with their badges at by Aimee Clydesdale. Aimee was school captain in 2005 where she flourished as a talented basketball player. Aimee now plays for the Dandenong Rangers in the WNBL and is in the squad for the Australian Opals. She spoke to the students about the need to work hard to achieve the best out of life and make the most out of their time at the school. The election process for the captains involved all candidates presenting speeches to their peers and teachers. The peers voted for a student who they believed would make a suitable leader at the school and the candidates were then shortlisted.

MEGASAURUS PARK SET TO OPEN WITH A ROAR AT LIVINGSTON Join the family fun and free entertainment at the official opening of the new dinosaur themed Megasaurus Park at Peet’s Livingston community in Cranbourne East this weekend. Kids will love this exciting new playground which features an impressive skeletal dinosaur climbing frame along with all the latest in outdoor play equipment including slide, cradle swing, climbing scales and zip line. To celebrate the launch of the new park, Peet is hosting a free twilight screening of the original 1994 Jurassic Park movie (rated PG) on Saturday 5 March. Families are invited to come along from 6pm to explore and play in the new playground, bring a picnic blanket or grab a deck chair, and enjoy the complimentary popcorn, fairy floss, slushies, mini burgers, chips and drinks before the screening starts at 7pm. Peet Limited managing director and CEO Brendan Gore said the event will be a great opportunity for the community to come and experience the new park for themselves. “Megasaurus Park is an exciting addition to the recreational amenity at Livingston,” said Mr Gore. “Livingston is a community that has been designed with families in mind,” he added “with more than 10 hectares of open space and beautiful parklands planned to offer a convenient and enjoyable lifestyle for residents.” With close to 600 lots now sold and only three new land releases to come - now is the time to visit Livingston, explore the community and experience the Livingston life first-hand. Buyers looking to join the Livingston community can choose from the great range of lots and house and land
packages currently available. This weekend also marks the last chance to enter Peet’s competition to win a family Gold Coast theme park holiday. Simply visit the Livingston Display Village before 5pm on Sunday 6 March and enter the draw for the chance to win this fun-filled prize which includes flights, accommodation, transfers and entry into Movie World, Sea World and Wet ‘n Wild. BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Virtual accountant adds up By CASEY NEILL WHEN is an accountant not an accountant? Dandenong South-based Ross Billson explains that he fills the gap between book keeper and external tax agent as a virtual chief financial officer (CFO). “More information makes more informed decisions so you can plot you course with more confidence,” he said. An $8000 Greater Dandenong Council business grant presented on 10 December has helped him to relocate from Glen Waverley and re-brand as Billson Business Advisory. Business mentoring included in the grant is helping him to find clients. “My first ever job was in the City of Greater Dandenong working for Price Waterhouse 25-plus years ago,” Mr Billson said. “That was my only experience working in an accounting practice. I didn’t like it, to be frank. I didn’t want to be an auditor. “I left the chartered accounting profession after about 12 months and got into industry.” He worked in different financial roles at various manufacturing companies, spending time in London and the Netherlands and introducing activity-based costing to Victorian manufacturers. “At the time, that was the real flavour of the month in terms of accurate product costings,” he said. “The concepts still hold true today. “I did, basically, the first activity-based costing project for a manufacturer in Victoria with National Radiators.” Mr Billson got his public practice cer-
tificate in 2014 and started his virtual CFO business mid-last year. He offers strategic planning, budgeting, forecasting, management reporting, system evaluation, cash-flow analysis and more. His is a long way from the traditionalstyle accounting practice focused on auditing and taxation. “I don’t do any of that - I’m specifically away from that kind of thing, doing the business advisory and really partnering with businesses,” he said. “It’s really just a part-time chief financial officer or a part-time financial controller or a part-time finance manager. “It’s going into companies and either doing projects for a period of time or going in once a week, once a month, once a quarter and being part of their management team and bringing that financial expertise from where I’ve been in industry into the SME (small to medium enterprise) manufacturers. “The SMEs can’t really afford a full time financial officer and they don’t want them doing data entry to fill in time.” Mr Billlson’s focus is now on networking and letting businesses know the benefits he can offer. “I don’t need a lot of clients to keep me busy. Probably 10 to 20 is the scale I’d be looking at,” he said. “Growing beyond that I’d be looking at putting on staff. “I would hope in the next 12 months I would have at least 10 clients. That’s my objective.” The Journal will profile each of the business grant recipients over coming months.

Businesses chip in for charity GREATER Dandenong businesses have hit the golf course for a good cause. SEBN held its annual Take a Swing for Charity golf day at Sandhurst Golf Club in Skye on Monday 22 February. The event has raised more than $250,000 over the past six years. Organisers are still counting the cash from this year’s golf round and auction, which will go to
the State Schools’ Relief Fund (SSRF). It provides uniforms, clothing, shoes and other materials for disadvantaged students in Greater Dandenong. The SSRF last year received $44,000 from Take a Swing for Charity, which paid for school equipment and uniforms for 679 students from 17 local schools.
Cleaning program helps young people A CLEANING service helping young people to find their feet is sweeping into Greater Dandenong. TRY is one of Australia’s oldest social enterprises and is bringing its TRY Clean program to Dandenong. The commercial office cleaning service employs young people referred through employment service providers and welfare agencies. The program’s aim is to transition the workers from the entry-level employment experience into further study or future employment. “This is a wonderful opportunity for local businesses to support young people on the path to achieving their potential and becoming contributors in their local communities,” TRY Australia CEO Julia Cambage said. TRY works with communities to identify needs, then collaborates with businesses and organisations to provide opportunities to transform lives. All profits go into programs to meet social needs. Visit www.try.org.au to find out more.

A green way to have fun FAMILIES picked up tips to save money and the environment at a fun day out in Dandenong. Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan said the third annual Family Sustainability Festival at Dandenong Market on Sunday 21 February was “the best ever”.
“It best combined being a family-friendly event with plenty of free family activities on offer, and also a great variety of stalls that showed residents many different practical and affordable ways where they can live more sustainable lives - helping the environment and saving money at the same time,” he said.
The council event featured pedal-powered smoothies, native animals, cooking demonstrations, roving performers, a see-through bee hive, craft activities and more. Experts were on hand to shed light on improving energy efficiency through products and building design.

Raiders loss is a gain for Cougars By JARROD POTTER LEADERSHIP and the next great challenge guided Calvin Enge to his new basketball home - Keysborough. Enge made the tough choice over the summer to leave the Dandenong’s SEABL team, instead choosing to play for Keysborough in BIG V. The big decision to leave the Rangers, the club he’s called home for the past five seasons, was arduous for the versatile guard-forward, but Enge knew it was time to take his basketball in a different direction. “I mean basically I got to a point at Dandenong where it was great - I miss all the boys the coaching and everything - but I kind of just thought for myself personally it wasn’t the right fit anymore,” Enge said. “It was a bit selfish for one, the Dandenong Rangers team, and two, myself, to keep playing there and not pursuing a bit of a bigger role and that was my main point for leaving.” He wasn’t locked in with Keysborough until earlier this year, where his choice, as so many things do, happened out of sheer coincidence. Enge had few shoot around sessions over summer at Keysborough, just to stay fit and ponder where he would play in 2016, but found himself at home with the Cougars’ squad and his signing fell into place. “As for Keysborough that was a complete shock for me - I went down there a few times, have a few mates there and I went down and said I wasn’t looking to sign there, just wanted a run,” Enge said. “Had a few practice sessions with them and really liked what they

Calvin Enge is ready for life in the Cougars colours as he prepares for his first BIG V season at Picture: JARROD POTTER Keysborough. 150215 were about and the culture there and it all went from there.” While the more relaxed BIG V schedule is a big checkmark for Enge - no longer needing to travel around Australia with the SEABL side - the important factor in his move to Keysborough boiled down to his personal drive. Enge knows he needs to step up as one of Keysborough’s leaders on and off the court - and take on the toughest responsibilities week-in, week-out. “I love to challenge myself and I said I came to Keysborough to have a much bigger role,” Enge said. “I’m one of the leaders in this group and that’s a lot different for me, not so learn about myself but learn about my team mates as well, that’s what
I’m looking forward too. “It’s a bit of a smaller league, so I’ve got a bit more flexibility to play - coach (Nathan Vogt) has talked about playing me at the three-four so that’s something I’m keen to do.” Nothing will ever take away from his experiences at Dandenong though as Enge finished his time in SEABL with 131 matches, two conference titles and the 2013 SEABL national championship. “Definitely the experience and just being in that professional level - that’s something you cherish forever and obviously we won a national championship there as well,” Enge said. “Just being around a great group of guys to learn from - I didn’t have much of a junior background in basketball.
“I’ve learnt as I’ve gone along so everyone from DP (Darren Perry) to Angela Harms has really helped me with that.” He took the court in the recently held Cougar Cup and Enge was impressed with the feeling around the group and especially the silver-andblue fans. What I’ve noticed about Keysborough is the atmosphere - every time we play down there it’s just crazy,” Enge said. “They’re a small club but they really know how to get down and support their team.” Enge and his Cougars will start their BIG V Division 1 Men’s campaign away on Saturday 19 May, battling Mildura.
Declan's thrown his lot in with discus By JARROD POTTER INHERITING his nana’s love of discus has guided Declan McBean well throughout his time in the track and field ranks. The next McBean to make their mark at Springvale Little Athletics Centre, Declan has become the family’s third-generation athletics all-rounder. McBean, 14, from Dandenong North, has had a discus in his hand as long as he can remember, after his nana Merle McBean - the City of Greater Dandenong’s Citizen of the Year in 2001 - ushered him into the athletics world. His prowess with the field sport has earned him a ticket to Perth to compete in the Athletics Australia Junior Track and Field Championships after a stellar weekend at the Victorian championships. With a best throw of 41.19m in the recently held Victorian championships, McBean finished third in the discus to earn a ticket to the nationals.
Monday, 29 February, 2016 Page 45
Declan McBean is the next in a long line of McBean marvels to excel in the athletics track and field realm. 150797 Picture: JARROD POTTER “Made it to the nationals in Perth for seniors and I’m an emergency for the ALAC squad for under-15s in little athletics,” McBean said. “I like discus the most because of my nana - she inspired me to do discus when I was younger and she was
a judge for nationals everywhere.” At the state championships, running for Haileybury Athletics Club, McBean clocked in at 13.30 for the 100m sprint, 24.89 in the 200m sprint and, most importantly, a 33.26 second-run for the 200m hurdles to
earn another assignment in the state colours. McBean’s running and field acumen makes him one of the only literal track and field participants at the national championships, as he will be part of the under-16s 200m hurdles and discus at the nationals held from 8-13 March. McBean just wants to push his limits and see how far his athletic abilities can take him; whether he can receive a medal or not doesn’t matter too much. “Trying to get into the top eight for discus and just doing my best in the 200m hurdles,” McBean said. “I’ve got discus and hurdles and been going pretty good in sprints, too.” McBean is also an emergency for the Australian Little Athletics Championships team and when he’s not sprinting about during summer he is also a handy footballer who is set to turn out for Parkmore Pirates this junior footy season.
THE final cuts are done and dusted as Dandenong Stingrays announced their 2016 TAC Cup squad on Monday. After one last round of big cuts - following Sunday’s pre-season triple header against Murray Bushrangers at Punt Road Oval - the Stingrays have finalised which 57 men will feature in this year’s initial squad. “It was pleasing - similar to the week before - we managed to play a couple of 17 year olds in the 18s game and we might’ve got a win but don’t really watch the scoreboard in the pre-season,” Stingrays coach Craig Black said. “Good hit out and it really shaped our list.” There are a lot of new faces set to impress this TAC Cup season, with 2015 under-16 Vic Country members Hunter Clark, Luke DaviesUniacke, Jake Frawley, Beaconsfield’s Oscar Clavarino making the step into the higher standard in their under-17 seasons. Familiar under-17s like Josh Battle, Reece Piper and Myles Poholke are also set to make a great impact in their draft years and Stingrays coach Craig Black said all who made the grade have earned their places as part of a strong mix at Shepley Oval. “I think we’re pretty level across the board that’s one of our strengths,” Dandenong coach Craig Black said. “We’ve got a good balance of smalls, talls and our midfield and it’s a very even group that should do well this year.” Beaconsfield tandem Tommy Glen and Tom Jok have decided to go around again, as has ruck/ forward Travis Young among other 19 year olds. Black said it is one thing to be a talented 18 year old in the Stingrays group, but the bar is set even higher for those returning in their top-age season. “It’s a big challenge as the 19 year olds - we challenge them to step up as if they don’t get picked up in the draft as 18 year olds they have to be better again to impress the recruiters,” Black said. “As a coaching group you probably ride them a bit harder as they’re good players. “They didn’t get drafted and have to get better - work on deficiencies and improve across the board but that’s the great thing about them getting another chance.” Dandenong’s got another month remaining to gel as a team, announce the leadership group and prepare for the season ahead with the side wanting to go one better than its preliminary final exit in 2015. Stars shine above Rangers By JARROD POTTER WNBL - SEMI-FINAL ALL it took was 58 seconds. Dandenong had dominated SEQ Stars all night - leading for 97 per cent of the match - but the crunch moments of its 82-86 semi-final loss, the remaining three per cent, will leave the team wondering what could have been. Not even the raucous 1473 strong crowd could cheer their Rangers home as the side fell away in the fourth, conceding 31 points in the final term to give up the lead with only seconds remaining. Dandenong couldn’t ask for more offensively early though, as the hosts knocked down 41-apiece in each half, but the errors crept in defensively through the second half as the Stars started shining. Learning their lessons from last week, the Rangers kept Jordan Hooper (11 points) on a tight leash through the first half. Dandenong did not let the American import get her long-range game going, unlike last week where she nailed seven-of-13 from beyond the arc, while generally keeping the Stars unsettled in their own half. But Hooper’s long-range prowess would come back to haunt the Rangers down the stretch. The rest of the Stars’ starting roster found the ring as well - as Rachael Jarry (24 points), Ify Ibekwe (21 points) and Bec Allen (17 points) kept the scoreboard ticking - but Dandenong maintained dominion on court. In contrasting styles, Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson kept her roster rotating through the match while SEQ’s Megan Thompson literally stuck to her guns. Aimie Clydesdale (eight points) caught fire of her own in the second, knocking down two treys to push the margin out to 15 as Dandenong
Dandenong Rangers’ import Annalise Pickrel powers past SEQ Stars’ Jordan Hooper in another strong showing for the Michigan State alumnus. 150855 Picture: JARROD POTTER seemed a certainty to erase the disappointment of the last two weeks. Taking the mantle of on-court leader to heart, Sara Blicavs (38 points, nine rebounds) was extraordinary throughout the semi. She took the game on, rode her luck and produced shots that had to be seen to be believed. Whether she amazed with flying lay-ups through a sea of Stars’ defenders or sank clutch threes, Blicavs ensured Dandenong didn’t go down without a fight. The Opals’ swingman burdened the scoring responsibilities late in the clash as SEQ mounted its successful comeback. Playing her first WNBL final in over decade,
Jacinta Kennedy (12 points) also shone, carrying on despite battling Ibekwe and Nadeen Payne in the key - even after a trip to the locker rooms in the third term after a knock to the abdomen. SEQ continued to chip away at the tally, while Blicavs in particular kept the Rangers on track with her aerial superiority. But no matter what Dandenong did, there was no stopping the late SEQ surge. The close guarding on Hooper fell down in the finale as her long-range trey pushed the Stars ahead for the first time in the clash. Dandenong couldn’t muster one last piece of magic as the season came to a soul-shattering end at the third last hurdle.
Rangers coach Larissa Anderson said it boiled down to defence and the side couldn’t hold the Stars in the clinch moments, especially as they sent the visitors to the line far too often. “I feel like we had that - I personally think we played so well tonight overall, but uncharacteristically missed some shots throughout the second half and the zone got us a little bit,” Anderson said. “We scored more than enough points, but you can’t allow a team to get 86 ... it was defence. “In the end when you look at the score line, they got 25 of them from the free throw line, and that makes it really tough.” Blicavs was pleased to step up in the crunch moments but admitted no personal achievement would be a consolation for the loss. “I think I surprised myself with three - that were complete flukes, but I’ll take it,” Blicavs said. “I guess I did ok, but we didn’t win so it’s kind of flattening and I’m not really thinking about that at all.” While it was not a fitting end to a hard-fought season, Anderson was extremely pleased with her side’s tenacity throughout the year. Seeing the side fight back from injuries and form slumps that almost threatened their shot at finals, Anderson thinks it will drive this group to greater successes in years to come. “For us I’m just going to focus on the fact that I’m so, so proud of these girls and think not many gave us a chance this season,” Anderson said. “I think if we got over the line there anything was possible, the girls were just starting to find their mojo back and I’m just so proud of their whole effort. “To make finals together in their first year is a great achievement - this will hurt, but I hope they take that into next season as I think these girls are going to do something special next season.”
Thunder storms all across the City Rays wayward challenge
By JARROD POTTER NPL VICTORIA 2 EAST - ROUND 2 TAKING home the inaugural Jim Memeti Cup, Dandenong Thunder comprehensively belted its cross-town rivals Dandenong City in an impressive four-goal haul. The first Dandenong derby didn’t live up to its billing as Thunder rolled City comfortably to take the top spot in NPL 2 East with its second huge victory in a fortnight. Veton Korcari (12’) cashed in early, swinging the first goal into the top left corner to start the rout emphatically. It only got worse for City as an early red card to Andres Jerez - given for a last-man violation - left the home side reduced to 10 men for most of the clash. But the home side didn’t give up - the 10 men created a number of early opportunities that tested the Thunder’s back four and keeper Fraser Maclaren. A goal-line scramble - kicked away in the end by Simon Colosimo and Faisal Sakhizada - was about the best chance City produced all day as Thunder clamped down defensively once more. The one-man advantage gave ample opportunity for Thunder to sign off on another huge NPL 2 East victory as Amir Osmancevic (60’ and 76’) pushed to the top of the golden boot rankings with another brace - his second in two weeks. The margin gave Dandenong Thunder a chance to rotate the roster and bring on some of the up-and-coming talent as bench talent Antonio Barbaro, Yusuf Yusuf and Viktor Mujedinovski got to feature in the hit-out. City’s day ended badly as Mate Eterovic (85’) conceded an own-goal to complete the 4-0 whitewash. “It has been a good start - when you get a positive response from the group and moving forward into the first two rounds, if you can score eight goals and take two wins it definitely sets the tempo for the year,” Thunder coach Huss Skenderovic said. “We did set it right from the beginning in terms of what we want to do - worked on that with Veton the day before with the finishing and then we opened them up again and then Jerez fouled. “It did change the game obviously, never helps as tactically they change and you don’t know what they’re going to do, but it helped us and we came back out early in the second half
By JARROD POTTER
Dandenong City’s Chris Antoniaidis jumps to avoid the tackle from Dandenong Thunder Picture: JARROD POTTER defender Nick Modaffari. 150853 knowing what we had to do. “We steamrolled them in the end - could’ve had six or seven again and it’s good to create scoring chances.” The coach praised Dylan Facci, Colosimo and Osmancevic for their perforamnces, but thought they were part of an all-round stellar effort from the squad. The win gives Thunder a plus-eight goal diference and two emphatic wins to give them top of the ladder as the only unbeaten side in the division. Holding onto top of the table, with chasers Eastern Lions, Goulburn Valley Suns and Kingston City nipping at their heels, Dandenong Thunder will host seventh ranked Murray United on Saturday night but the coach doesn’t want anyone to get carried away just yet. “The Murray game will be tough as well,
very competitive, but we won’t change our approach,” Skenderovic said. “We’re there to score goals and entertain and make sure the crowds come back and we want to make sure the work ethics and habits remain. “Sometimes you win two games like that you become cocky or complacent and that’s not allowed to happen - that’s the message we’ll be driving home during the week.” Springvale White Eagles held early superiority over Brunswick City, with Damir Stoilovic scoring in the first three minutes, before John Pykett added the second just before the half. The best of White Eagles’ efforts though couldn’t stop a dying seconds’ penalty from levelling the ledger 2-2. Dandenong City travels yet again- this time to Goulburn Valley - while Springvale White Eagles play Kingston City on Monday night.
YOUTH GIRLS ACADEMY CHALLENGE ROUND 2 EARNING an emphatic 44-point victory over Geelong-Western, Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls have kept their Youth Girls Academy Challenge campaign alive. The only downside to the triumph was Dandenong’s woeful goal-kicking, as the girls sprayed their way to six-goals-16 as the big sticks proved a bigger challenge than the Jets/Falcons combination team. Dandenong’s worst enemy was its shonky kicking as the second term reaped two-goals-six and the last one-goal-seven to cut down the potential percentage. As opportunities flew frequently for the Stingrays’ girls, Jas Greirson reaped the rewards and showcased her all-round attributes. She stormed forward this week, after featuring last weekend as centre-half-back against Issy Huntington, but this time around it was Grierson’s turn to shine in the forward-50 on Saturday. Greirson cut a path through Geelong-Western’s defence in a three-goal best-on-ground haul while Sophie Phillips was just as potent up forward, as the Cranbourne flanker carved up the arc towards the victory. Defensively the stand-in skipper Jordy Allen was superb - negating just about all attacks Geelong-Western could throw at the Stingrays - while midfielders Courtney Jones (Cranbourne), Emily Browning (Lyndhurst) and Georgia Gee (Beaconsfield) flourished. Geelong-Western fought to stay alive, booting their only major in the third term with some solid work in the centre rewarded, but in the end Dandenong was a class above in the 6.16 (52) to 1.2 (8) triumph. Stingrays coach Scott Gowans was pleased with everything except the goal-kicking as he hoped the girls can straighten up and cash in on chances in front of goals. “Very inaccurate - I think it’s probably a result of playing early games, I have a bit of a belief that the early mornings really affect girls’ footy and especially the goal-kicking,” Gowans said. The win keeps Dandenong’s chances of qualifying first in the Southern conference alive, now sitting second behind Sandringham heading into the last round against Gippsland this Sunday at Garfield from 5pm.

Trevor Davies’ magnificent half-century guided Heinz Southern Districts Picture: JARROD POTTER into the DDCA Turf 1 semi-finals. 150850 11am on Saturday. DDCA TURF 1 (One Day) HEINZ Southern Districts (125) took a narrow-win over Parkfield (119) to sneak in the back door and claim the fourth spot in the Turf 1 finals. Trevor Davies (71) stood tall throughout the innings and just about carried his bat as the starring Cobra. The response was harrowing for the hosts, but in the end Matt Downe (3/130 and Michael Davies (3/19) ensured the visitors would fall seven short, guaranteeing Heinz the last spot in the semi-finals, facing minor premiers Springvale South this week.
Cranbourne (8/171) fought off Dandenong West (8/145) via an all-round performance from Matt Chasemore (75 and 2/8). The Eagles’ middle order stole the show as the total ballooned around Chasemore, Steve Spoljaric (33) and Lucas Ligt (37no). Shaun Weir (4/47) and Peter Atkinson (2/20) proved a strong opening tandem for the Bulls’ bowling, but not much can be said about the Bulls’ batting. Clay McCartney (38) endured against the likes of Spoljaric (4/21) and Chasemore, but struggled to get enough support as the victory ensured Cranbourne will face Berwick in the second semi-final.

VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET MEN’S AND WOMEN’S WITH pride on the line, but sadly not much else with the side already eliminated from the finals equation, Dandenong (252) stood up against Greenvale. The last salvo of 2015/16 started horribly for Dandenong though, losing the skipper Tom Donnell (0) for a duck, but the rescue work began at first-drop. Brendan Murphy (73) and Brett Forsyth (69) anchored the innings with a superb 148-run partnership - the best this season for the first XI coming in the last round of the season. The middle-order failed to make any impression after the Forsyth/Murphy duo succumbed though, as the next seven scalps fell for a scant 28 runs. The late order hitting of Justin Butterfield (38) and Peter Cassidy (21) guaranteed a lofty total for Greenvale to hunt down next week. Debutants Comrey Edgeworth (3) and Josh Dowling (4no) didn’t have long at the crease but now stand alongside the litany of young Panthers to get a chance at the senior level in 2015/16. Charging through Plenty Valley (62) the quick contingent ensured Dandenong Lions ( 1/64) were able to fight another day. The Lions surged through the wooden-spooners as Emma Gallagher (3/2) and Primrose Wohlers (3/20) sliced through the opposition. Chasing was easily accomplished by Sarah Elliott (37no) and Kelly Applebee (13no) and sets up a showdown against fourth placed Box Hill in the last one-dayer of the home-and-away season, starting
