Setting the standard FERNTREE Gully District Cricket Association (FTGDCA) is helping to boost the accountability of sporting clubs when it comes to reducing domestic violence. Through its recently held pilot program, Communities Against Domestic Violence, the association has set a precedent for other locally based organisations to follow. The initiative featured a series of informative events designed to spread the antidomestic violence message among young men, which culminated in a feature match in Round 11 on Saturday, 13 February, between Eildon Park and Knoxfield. In addition, all 15 senior clubs under the association banner wore red armbands to not only signify the ‘stop’ message, but the blood spilt from cases of domestic violence. Many local police officers also supported these events. Communities Against Domestic Violence has been hailed a huge success and “blown away many of its key drivers, to an extent it’s widely tipped to develop substantially. FTGDCA President, Murray Wilson, said organisers felt compelled to launch the program. “Sporting clubs have enormous opportunity to lead cultural change, he said. “Young men are more likely to respect the environment in which they’re playing sport. “The message is more likely to cut through than any television campaign. “The culture must change to ‘stop, this behaviour is not acceptable’.

Mr Wilson said Knox City Council, local police and the Rotary Club of Rowville-Lysterfield were instrumental in bringing together the project. Rotary members produced a small video clip, which many players viewed and featured images and sound-grabs of a real-life domestic violence incident. Mr Wilson said the developers of the pilot program sought to target males between the ages of 15 to 50, not only as perpetrators but as victims. “It’s not just about dad hitting mum, it’s also incidents like grandma and grandpa suffering violence at the hands of their children, he said. “The message is ‘this is not OK’ and ‘you must speak up’. The campaign comes after Yarra Junction footballer Brendon Murphy was named Yarra Ranges Shire Citizen of the Year, after his viral video asking young men to stand up to family violence. The video featured members of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League (YVMDFL). Switching from player to player, the men in the video said that every week a woman was killed by her partner or ex-partner in Australia - “by a man who should know better, with mates who should know better. “The only member of acceptable deaths from domestic violence is zero, Mr Murphy said in the video. *Tell us what you think. Myster y of missing chef By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS MONDAY 29 February marks the 40th year since the disappearance of one of Australia’s first celebrity chefs and owner of the Cuckoo restaurant in Olinda, Willi Koeppen. Willi disappeared without a trace in 1976 and his Kombi Van was found in the car park of his restaurant early in the morning. Victoria Police have not given up on finding out what happened to him and they are currently preparing a brief for

the state coroner. Andrei Keoppen was in his midteens when his father went missing and he has said he is glad police have kept the investigation alive after all these years. “I’m confident there will be closure,” he said. “It’s something we’ve been looking for for 40 years. (Police) go over it over and over again and always find new bits of information. “Gradually, I think the truth will come out eventually.”

Willi is believed to have been murdered but the main suspect in his disappearance, Alex Tsakmakis, was beaten to death in prison in 1988. “We believe he met with foul play on night he disappeared,” Andrei said. “There was a window of four hours where he disappeared early in the morning until the realisation something might have happened. “The cleaner at the time saw cars heading down the hill and these little pieces of the puzzle come together and

then we find new pieces,” he said. All these pieces of the puzzle haven’t shed much light on Willi’s disappearance for the family but Andrei believes the full story will be revealed. “I think we will get the complete story. I have confidence in Victoria Police and I think they will unearth what happened. “I admire their tenacity. It’s been 40 years and they are still determined to resolve it.” Andrei said it would give the family some relief to finally know what hap-

pened to his father and is very hopeful the latest investigation by police will be the last. “We have not had an opportunity for closure and we have always carried this doubt and suspicion. “There are so many potential people who are suspects, some still alive, some moved on, and new theories coming forward all the time. “I think that it would make a big difference, like being able to go to his funeral.”

Man charged with unlawful imprisonment By PETER DOUGLAS A LILYDALE man, 35, was expected to front Melbourne Magistrates’ Court yesterday after he allegedly held a woman captive in Lilydale for a number of days. Victoria Police media reported that investigators were told the woman raised the alarm after fleeing from her residence in Alfred Road about 7.15pm on Sunday. The man was arrested a short time later, then later charged with unlawful imprisonment, rape and intentionally reckless cause. The man is believed to have known the victim.

Briefly Graffiti artist arrested A LOCAL 17-year-old male has been arrested and charged for graffiti damage after a number of tags caused damage to buildings in Mt Dandenong last week. Olinda Police took the young man into custody late last week after executing a search warrant. He was questioned and charged with 14 offences of criminal damage after being identified on CCTV footage. The young man has been remanded on bail to appear in the Ringwood Children’s Court in early April. Inquiries are still being made in relation to a second Mt Dandenong youth suspected to be involved and anyone with information is urged to contact Olinda Police on 9751 1241.

THE future of Belgrave Fire Brigade is in good hands, judging by the enthusiasm of the Belgrave Junior Firefighters as they prepare for the 2016 Urban Junior Championships (UJC). Belgrave Junior Fire Brigade will compete against 78 other teams, from 48 other Victorian brigades, at Tatura Racecourse on 27-28 of February, in a tradition stretching back over 140 years. Teams will compete in 18 events over two days which will test their skills involving speed and knowledge; while using equipment such as hoses, hitting water targets and working as a unit. The championship enforces these skills to be learnt to the best of the juniors’ ability, to prepare them for future

firefighting jobs if they enter the seniors division. Belgrave’s Junior Captain Jaymee Grondman, 15, has been attending the championship since joining the Junior Brigade at age 12 and is looking forward to participating again this year. “I’m quite excited for the championship,” Jaymee said. “I’ve been going to the championship ever since I started. “As competitive as it is, the other brigades encourage you from the sidelines. “As I run along the track for an event, I hear ‘go Belgrave’ from neighbouring brigades. “It’s the encouragement that really matters. “If you’re on a call with multiple

Excellent effort By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS MONBULK College has stolen the show at the 2015 VCE Showcase of Excellence where 15 of 19 studio art students had their work on display at Burrinja. The VCE Showcase is a display of the work of the best art and studio arts students from the local schools in the Dandenong Ranges. Madeline George, school vice-captain at Monbulk College, even got her photographic work in to Top Arts at the NGV. Around 3000 students apply from around Victoria for Top Arts and only about 40 get through into the final for that prestigious showcase. Monbulk College studio arts teacher Helen Macinnes said she was very proud of the achievements of her students last year.

“I had a wonderful group of students in 2015 studio arts,” she said. “They were passionate, dedicated and applied themselves with maturity and diligence all year, so their successes are a wonderful affirmation and celebration of their hard work.” Students Madeline George, Tayla McKay and Amanda Lacy all have work on display at Burrinja and said they were very happy about showing their work to the public. “We all want to thank Ms Macinnes for the great year we had,” the students said. “She was a tough marker but fair and we think it made us better students for it.” The VCE Creative Showcase will be on display at Burrinja Cultural Center in Upwey until 6 March.

MELBOURNE Duo the Weeping Willows will bring their brand of bluesy Alternative County to the Hills this March in promotion of their new album. The second LP from partners Andy Wrigglesworth and Laura Coates, ‘Before Darkness Comes A-Callin’ draws from their experience of travelling through the southern United States. “In 2014/13 we went on tour of southern states of US and the album is inspired by that,” Ms Coates said. “We played the Americana Music festival and were greatly influenced by the beautiful countryside we experienced.” The duo also had the opportunity of recording this new album in the United States which has been a dream of the band for a long time. “It was pretty intimidating but the people we met were really sweet and patient and had the most amazing gear,” Ms Coates said. “Everything sounded amazing and they made us feel comfortable and give best performance. “It was bit different, we were a bit of a novelty being Aussie in the Deep South. People were curious about a couple of Australians playing American music,” she said. “But everyone was really warm friendly and welcoming folk who want to know your story.” The Weeping Willows will be touring through The Basin and Ferntree Gully later this month with the official release

Letters With a good regular bus service, I will be much more inclined to use the bus instead of getting into my car. Good luck to Cr Clarke with this important project. Maryke Hill, Belgrave.

All aboard! IN RELATION to Cr Mike Clarke’s proposal for an electric bus service for the Hills, this is a great idea that addresses multiple issues. Environmentally friendly green buses would reduce the need for individual car usage and multiple car ownership for households. This would be economical - improving access to towns and townships across the Dandenongs - for locals and visitors. This would boost employment, as well as improve accessibility for those dependent on public transport so they could engage with their own and nearby communities. It could also reduce incidences of drink-driving. It may improve safety: if buses ran (and were matched to meet) until last trains, and perhaps later on weekends, many people would feel more confident using public transport. This idea, if well executed and well publicised, would be of huge benefit to the hills quality of life. I hope your newspaper gets behind it. Tracey Stewart, Belgrave.

Chalk pictures just scribble I WROTE a letter recently with my concerns about our little township (Cockatoo). I thought, well, there is going to be a grand meeting to thrash out problems. I haven’t heard the outcome about that; I stand to be corrected. I know things can’t be corrected overnight, so I stared again as you walk down McBride Street. The pavements are disgusting, why? The chalk Christmas pictures, or scribble as I call it, have not been removed, although businesses had been assured it would be cleaned off by 28 December. It makes the street look shabby. Surely we are better than this. My daughter came to visit a couple of weeks ago. They called in at Emerald; she could not believe how the township was buzzing. Then, they came to Cockatoo. We pay rates, too. What does it take to get something done? The chalk drawings would be a start. Val Butler, Cockatoo.

Bus idea's electric CR Clarke’s idea of a solar electric bus network is a great idea. Smaller buses on our roads will make it safer for all road users. I have been waiting for this to happen for a long time now.

Bus service for campus at the shopping centre since 2013. Mr Merlino said the route, with more than 50 services a day, will now visit the campus, operating every 15 minutes. He said the route would provide commuters with a direct link to train services at Lilydale Station.

“The Victorian Government has delivered on its commitment to Lilydale community and the Box Hill Institute by reopening the 670 bus service to the Lilydale campus,” he said. “We’re ensuring that students and staff have access to public transport from the first day of the semester.” 1216179-HM06-16

AN extended bus service to Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale Campus will be a coup for staff and students, according to Monbulk MP James Merlino. From Monday, 22 February, Route 670 has been extended from Lilydale Marketplace Shopping Centre to the recently opened Lilydale Campus. The service had terminated

Weight loss surgery can help REVISIONAL bariatric surgery (weight loss) surgery: revisional bariatric surgery is performed to repair or alter one of the various types of surgery done for weight loss. This is often required to improve weight loss outcomes and a person's quality of life. With increasing numbers of surgical procedures performed for the treatment of morbid obesity, the need to revise and/or repair these operations is on the rise. The two operations that were widely performed for the treatment of morbid obesity and associated with a high rate of revision are gastric stapling and gastric band. The gastric sleeve and gastric bypass are the next stage in treatment for these patients. Careful assessment and consideration is essential in the decision between the patient, the GP and the surgeon. Best practice indicates bariatric surgery before insulin therapy for patients with type two diabetes bellitus. Thousands of patients in Australia had gastric banding surgery between the years 2000 and 2010. Statistics show a 50 per cent failure rate in these patients at five years. The device fails to achieve satiety as the stomach becomes fatigued, leading to dilation of the stomach pouch above the band. Often patients find the band intolerable to live with, or it simply fails to achieve significant weight loss. The solution is to remove the gastric

of 30kgs a salvage bypass was suggested and performed in February 2015; They had achieved a 20-kilogram weight loss five weeks after surgery; Patients are reviewed annually by our in-house physicians to assess their general health and nutritional status due to the nature of this surgery. Vitamins and minerals are very important for the body. They help to keep you healthy and full of energy. Every day our body uses these vitamins and minerals, so they need to be replaced by eating nutritious foods. If you are unable to get enough vitamins and minerals each day this can lead to poor health, making you unwell, low in energy and unable to lose weight. The bariatric population is at a higher risk of not having enough vitamin and mineral stores as they cannot consume the same amount of nutritious foods as the general population. In some surgeries vitamins and minerals are not well absorbed from the food. Due to these reasons it is very important that all bariatric patients take their recommended supplements. There are many different types of vitamins and minerals that are sold and advertised. If you are not sure which vitamins and minerals to be taking, ask your dietitian or doctor which are most appropriate for you.

Best mess in years

1217970-KK8-16

Deadpool Starring Ryan Reynolds, Ed Skrein and Morena Baccarin Rated MA15+ WE’VE mostly covered the big Oscar contenders (which arrive frustratingly late to our shores) in the new year, so let’s return to the present with 2016’s first big box-office hit. Deadpool is a gloriously irreverent, ridiculous experience with surprising heart. Based on the Marvel comics series, the film follows Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), a wisecracking former mercenary who gains superhealing abilities from unethical

experimentation. Ryan Reynolds is clearly having a blast playing Deadpool (which was reportedly a dream role for him), delivering lightning-fast comedic timing and brilliant chemistry with his co-stars. Deadpool has crammed full of vulgar humour and fourth wall-breaking gags, but don’t let that put you off. The film cleverly pokes fun at superhero values, the genre’s recent dark and gritty trend, studio politics and even its own exaggerated silliness, and succeeds impressively (where most others fail dismally) in being intelligently vulgar, and charmingly self-referential

without being insufferable. Moreover, the plot is anchored by a heartwarming relationship between Wade and his girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). Ajax (Ed Skrein) is a highly intimidating villain, and the action is energetic, gruesomely creative and expertly choreographed. Last year’s Jupiter Ascending was entirely style (and still wonderful), but Deadpool has plenty of satirical substance and emotionally engaging storytelling. Deadpool is the best mess to come out of Hollywood in years. - SETH HYNES

Galvin steps up again By STEVE BROWN PHONES were running hot on the final one day round of Reeves Shield action as the final four was settled. There were no fingernails left at Monbulk as Ferntree Gully overcame the hosts to win a thriller by just two wickets, but more importantly locking in fourth place on the ladder and a crack at Belgrave in a sudden death semi final. Monbulk batting first posted a formidable 5/197 thanks to half centuries to Shane Cosstick and Chris Coen while the Gully’s Bryce Galvin was in the wickets again with 3/34. After the tea break, the Blues were well on track at 3/106 after 16 overs with Jayden Bradbury (41) leading the way until the collapse of the middleorder opened the gate for the Hawks. All-rounder Galvin stepped up once again, contributing 43 with the bat as the Blues claimed the win eight wickets down, subsequently shutting out fifth-placed Eildon Park. It was never going to be an easy game at Monbulk, but Ryan Handley’s men can take some confidence into next week’s semi-final. Last season’s grand finalists came together at Eildon Park as the Panthers destroyed the Johnson Park Sharks inside 55 overs of play. In a day the reigning premiers would rather forget, the Sharks were the hunted, skittled for just 72 as the trio of Nathan Caton-Roberston (3/11 from 8 overs), Andrew Brown (2/20) and Adrian Baltruchaitis (2/14) showed no mercy. Cody Morris and the Hicks brothers polished off the deficit in 20 overs, leaving Johnson Park at the bottom of the table and in Decoite Shield for next season.

At Upwey, all eyes were on eighth placed Knox Gardens and bottom side Upwey-Tecoma which batted first and were dismissed in the 38th over for 177. Dain Howe clouted 41 in even time, dismissed in the eighth over as Adam Wild (3/15 from 8) and Nav Singh 2/28 restricted the Tigers who were on track for 200 plus. In a match-winning move, Upwey skipper Steve Moore immediately introduced spin at both ends, taking the pace off the ball as Knox Gardens crawled to 3/51 from 20 overs. Off-spinner Jake Evans collected 3/16 from his spell, including a brilliant catch off his own bowling; and when the in-form Jarrod Butcher fell for 42, all hope for the Falcons was lost and they ended the day 26 runs in arrears. The Basin got home in the last over of the day against Belgrave and will play Knoxfield at Carrington Park in the semi-final with the winner progressing to the grand final in a new look finals series similar to football. Belgrave made first use of the wicket, registering 6/136 with local radio duo Ben Carnell (40) and John Levell (36). Steve Ryan (2/14) and the ever improving Jarryd Debernardi (2/22) were the pick of the bowlers for the Bears. The Basin got the wobbles at 6/92 after Danny Rundle was dismissed for 45, bringing 16-year-old debutant Connor Edwards to the crease with Scott Vozzo, before the pair combined for a match-winning partnership of 46 with only four balls to spare. Edwards remained 33 not out in his first taste of Reeves Shield. In the upset of the round, Mountain Gate defeated flag favourites Knoxfield by three wickets.

Monash Tigers premiership player Tom Boxell will go into the finals in top form after his unbeaten century for Knoxfield, setting Mountain Gate 197. Not to be outdone, the Gators closed the day with 7/199 with the knowledge that they could match it with the best. Match-winner Marshall Bunting ended a good season with 74 not out. Close finish that earnt finals spot By STEVE UTTING LAST weekend saw the final home and away matches for most of the Monbulk junior and senior teams as well as the Milo program on Friday night. The highlights of the weekend were the exciting wins to the fourth XI and the Under 16s. Batting second, both teams hit the winning runs on the second last ball to secure a semi-final next weekend. Clayton Spooner made 75 not out in the fourths and hit the winning runs. Flynn Trewavis hit the winning runs in the Under 16s with Tam Noonan continuing his good form making 53no and taking 3/14. The fourth XI and Under 16s now play a semifinal next Saturday and Sunday (5-6 March). Both matches are likely to be away, so check the Mycricket website for details during the week. Good luck to both teams, Go Hawks. Saturday afternoon and night also saw our annual Ladies Day as well as Past Players/Life Members Day. It was great to see so many ladies enjoy the

day and be entertained by Mark Fenby and it’s always fantastic to see our past players and Life Members which yesterday included: Jim Fraser, Ken Utting, Greg Hardy, Dave Walkey, Byron Griffiths, Cees Broekhof, Bruce Mason, Damian Howard, Paul Utting and Jason Fraser. Thanks to everyone who helped organise the day, especially our President Chris 'Funky’ Defina. Thanks also to Damian Howard and his helpers for another very successful Milo in2Cricket program at Monbulk. We look forward to the older kids in this program playing in our U10s next season. It was fantastic to see a great turn out of smiling, enthusiastic athletes for an exciting morning of athletics competition. Be there from 8.30am to help with set up and buy your bacon and egg ‘sarnie’! In the evening, there is a great chance to watch some of Australia’s, and the world’s, best athletes compete at the IAAF Challenge meet at Lakeside Stadium. Headlining the meeting is Ke-

EMERALD GOLF THE last round of the three-round Summer Cup was held at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday with a small, but talented, group of golfers still in the mix. By the time all things were shaken and stirred, it was John Keys (23) showing nerves of steel to withstand all challenges to come out on top while amassing a staggering +16. This is his first championship at the club and he shows the will and talent to keep doing it. The ever consistent Leigh Morison (19) came in second with +12 followed by Peter Jones (23) on +7 while John Carvill made a strong lunge at the tape to finish next on +6. A sad and sorry gaggle of golfers came in with scores and stories bordering on the amusing through to tragic. The ladies’ Summer Cup was won in a common canter by a dogged and persistent Aileen Ecclestone from a fading Jennifer Marsh. The daily comp and B Grade was won by Ben Balfour (19) when he gave a masterclass in putting from off the green to sit on +10 at the end of the round. John Carvill headed up the A Grade crew with +5. Allan Ecclestone was nearest he pin on the 4th, Carvill the 7th, David Aitken the 13th and Clowes won on the 12th and the pro pin 18th. Wednesday’s Old and Foppish Golf (OFG) was a stableford event and once again Graham White (16) starred but this time nobody headed him off like they have in past weeks. His 43 points topped the field and he was followed by Phillip Crossley (23) on 42 with Peter Clowes (20) and Graeme Fergus (18) both on 41. Next week the comp will be for the March monthly medal while the seniors pennant team head down to Mount Martha on Thursday to wreak havoc ... with a bit of luck.

Motoring Teamwork is tested By KATH GANNAWAY A GROUP of Upper Yarra Secondary College students tested their teamwork skills last weekend during round three of the 2016 Victorian HPV (Human Powered Vehicle) Series at Casey Fields, Cranbourne, competing against more than 100 school teams. Seven students were involved in the junior team, who were hoping to improve on their sixth place in their last meet.

Hosted by the Casey Cardinia Cycling and Human Powered Vehicle Club, the challenge tests the ingenuity, teamwork and physical fitness of the competitors, while promoting sustainable energy practices. Student Katie said the group went well, although they were involved in an accident early in the event, which put them off the road briefly. Fortunately, they were able to get the vehicle back on the road and finish the race, notching up some really good laps.

Unfortunately, they didn’t place, but the team was pleased with their persistence. Initially, the HPV project was run as an elective in school hours, but now it is an extra-curricular activity, which requires commitment from students and parents because all races are held on a weekend. The students said the vehicle had been purchased, not built, although they designed the livery and regularly maintain and improve the vehicle. Student Ashlee Shotter said it was a great challenge.

“When I first joined the HPV team, I wasn’t sure if it was for me,” she said. “But once I went to my first race, I knew I would continue with it because it was so fun.” Team-mate Riley Foy agreed. “HPV racing is a great challenge, where you have to push yourself physically and be really determined,” he said. The next meeting is at Knox in April and the group is hoping to have a senior team compete at this event.

New-look Lux is on a high TOYOTA’S new-generation HiLux SR5 has been named the country’s best dual cab 4x4 in the prestigious Australia’s Best Cars awards, judged by the nation’s motoring clubs. Judges said the new HiLux was smarter, more economical and tougher - building on its renowned ‘unbreakable’ reputation with a stronger chassis and beefed-up suspension. They said its modern drivetrain was particularly smooth and quiet, with a new 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine delivering “the double punch of better performance and lower fuel consumption“.

“Off-road ability has also been improved, with 20 per more wheel articulation, bigger dampers and larger disc brakes, along with greater under-body protection,“ judges said. “These improvements were noted on our off-road testing - HiLux had greater clearance and articulation than the rest of our finalists.“ Judges said the HiLux cabin stood out from the competition, being more modern and quieter, while the finish and quality of materials provide a relatively high-class ambience for a working vehicle. Its features include a seven-inch touch-screen multimedia system,

satellite navigation, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, and modern convenience features such as climatecontrol air-conditioning and keyless entry and ignition. “The addition of tilt-and-reach adjustable steering - a rarity in this category - allows the driver to find a comfortable position and gives HiLux a more car-like feel," judges noted. HiLux has a five-star ANCAP safety rating with features including a reversing camera, electronic stability control and seven airbags, including a driver knee airbag. Toyota Australia executive direc-

tor sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the award confirmed the eighthgeneration HiLux was the toughest HiLux yet. “Australia’s favourite ute in 2015 inspires go-anywhere confidence, advances its role as a workhorse and is also fun to drive with SUV-like ride, handling, comfort and convenience,“ Mr Cramb said. Australia’s Best Cars is the largest independent new-vehicle assessment and awards program in Australia, evaluating vehicles against criteria such as value for money, design and function, and on-road performance.
