EVEN cancer can’t wipe the trademark smile from Don Cameron’s face. The Cornerstone Contact Centre co-ordinator’s positivity didn’t waver as he described how fast-spreading cancers were attacking his liver, lungs, pelvis, bowel and gall bladder. Doctors told the 45-year-old he might not live to see May, but supporting the community remains his focus. “A few weeks ago I was at the gym and I was working out and I was a little bit slow,” he said. “Then I sneezed in church and it felt like my chest exploded.” A heart condition was Don’s first fear but tests found something far worse. He felt like he was dying and could barely stand or breathe. “It literally feels like I’m holding a spare tyre,” he said. Doctors said treatment would have little impact on the tumours so Don decided against it and is feeling remarkably well. “I’m meant to be really sick but I’m not,” he said. Breaking the news to his Cornerstone family has been the hardest part, Don said. “A lot of people here suffer from anxiety and depression. I’ve been a bit gutless in putting it on Facebook so everybody knows,” he said. “Heaps of people have been bringing food over. I’m jokingly saying I’ll have to invite my friends over to eat all the food.” He discovered Cornerstone in 1991 as a “brand new Christian” before it even opened its doors. “I worked next door at the taxation office. During my lunch break I’d come in here and drill a few holes in things – I’m not a handyman at all,
“They’re paying me sick leave. I feel guilty. I’m a drain. I’m not giving anything back.” Don said each Cornerstone lunch cost about $300 and suggested that businesses put up the cash and use the experience for team-building. He also appealed for volunteers with administration skills to support Pastor Michael Eggleton, his likely successor. “You can get people to wash dishes and cook food, that’s great. But when people are filling out forms you need some very professional people you can trust to get the job done,” Don said. “Michael came along at just the right time. He doesn’t know everything that I do but he’s got great potential. “Every time key leaders have left in the past, Cornerstone’s got stronger. “That gives me confidence.” Don cut off his trademark ponytail to cheer up his wife and daughters, aged eight and 10. “I used to have long hair and she always wanted me to cut it short,” he said. He’s seen many people succumb to cancer as a volunteer chaplain at Dandenong Hospital. “The threat of dying of cancer doesn’t worry me. It’s a very peaceful way to go,” he said. “At the moment I’m just playing it by ear. “I’m out and about. I hope that continues as long as possible.” Barb Carlin has volunteered at Cornerstone for the past 17 years. “They’re all devastated. He’s done a lot in the community. He’s one of them,” she said. But she’s confident the centre has a strong future. “Life goes on and Don would like to see that happen,” she said.

Man knocks himself out in police custody By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN bashed a mobile phone vendor in Dandenong Plaza, threatened to kill a support worker and rammed himself unconscious into a police cell wall, a court has heard. Vincent Gigliotti, 37, had reacted “disproportionately” because he was off his anti-schizophrenic medication and “dabbling with ice”, his lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 February. Gigliotti pleaded guilty to the assaults, including punching and throwing down a Dodo mobile phone kiosk worker in the shopping centre on 29 December. During the argument, Gigliotti
abused the victim at close range and was pushed back in the chest. In what he described to police as a self-protective act, Gigliotti then punched the seller to the left side of the head, threw him to the ground and punched him several more times. On 10 February, Gigliotti told a support worker during a “rambling” phone call that he’d “dismember” him and bring in the Bandidos outlaw motorcycle gang. “When I get my hands on you, I’ll cut you up,” he told the worker. Appearing on video link from Melbourne Assessment Prison, Gigliotti told the court he didn’t know any Bandidos members.
Gigliotti’s lawyer told the court that the accused couldn’t recall what he’d said during the phone call. “Basically, we accept if that’s what he said, that’s what he said.” The court heard the accused had a lengthy criminal history, several drug treatment court orders and been held in Thomas Embling highsecurity mental health hospital. Gigliotti’s schizophrenic and narcissistic tendencies were possibly drug induced, the lawyer said. “Mr Gigliotti says he needs help. The difficulties he faces and the intensity in which he needs to be assisted is the issue.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen
said the case had been recently adjourned after Gigliotti rammed himself into a wall and was taken to The Alfred hospital in a coma. Mr Vandersteen said the accused had a history of going to jail, getting well, being released and then “the wheels come off somehow”. “I have to accept you wouldn’t do this unless you were unwell. “We have to also consider, apart from your rehabilitation, how to protect the community when you’re unwell.” Gigliotti was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 26 April, pending a psychiatric report.
IN BRIEF Freeway death A WOMAN was killed in a multi-car crash on the Monash Freeway in Dandenong North. She was driving inbound about 7.40am on Thursday 3 March when she crossed over lanes of traffic between Stud Road and Police Road, striking several vehicles. Emergency services attended but the woman, aged in her 50s, died at the scene. No one else was injured and there was only minor damage to vehicles. The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined. The inbound lane was blocked off and traffic was diverted for several hours following the crash.
Teen stabbed A TEENAGE stabbing victim staggered into a nearby home for help following a come-frombehind attack in Dandenong. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Christine Johnstone said the 19-year-old Springvale man was walking to meet with friends about 7.10pm on Friday 26 February. As he reached Sixth Avenue and Purdy Street, he was stabbed three times from behind. The attackers fled with the victim’s phone, which he dropped during the assault. He was taken to The Alfred hospital with non-life threatening injuries after the occupants of a nearby home called triplezero.
Knife attack FOUR people have stabbed and beaten a man outside a Springvale cafe. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Christine Johnstone said the 25-year-old was on Springvale Road about 11pm on Thursday 25 February when the attack took place. He was taken to The Alfred hospital with a stab wound and injuries from another weapon, believed to be a metal pole. Det Sen Const said the man knew some of his attackers but investigations were ongoing.

Scan through history secures its future OUR special objects, images, and documents tell us about who we are and where we have come from as a community. The items in our local history collections tell stories over more than a century of everyday life across the municipality, from those of mayors and community leaders to children and families, and the many changes this area has been through. In partnership with the Dandenong and District Historical Society and the Springvale and District Historical Society, the council has created a joint archive facility for three historical collections to preserve our local history and provide ways for the broader community to get involved. The new facility in the old progress hall in Hammond Road, Dandenong, provides a quality, secure space for the storage and preservation of heritage items. The facility features industry standard light and temperature controls and monitoring, which are particularly important for items at risk of degradation such as photographic negatives and textiles. Importantly, it provides a place for our two historical societies to also store their documents and memorabilia. It makes sense that an environmentally-controlled building can be shared between all parties who have historic material so that all can take ad-

vantage of the facilities. In addition, the facility provides equipment for a team of volunteers to scan items from the heritage collection for presentation online. This is a really exciting initiative which will broaden the audience for historical collections in the municipality and beyond. The facility hosts the council’s civic collections including objects, photographs, maps, artworks and documents. Among the most important items is the council’s collection of historical mayoral robes as well as the many thousands of photographic negatives donated to the council by local photographer Graham Southam. In the near future, the facility will also host collections from the Dandenong and District Historical Society and the Springvale and District Historical Society.
The digital scanning of documents and photos has just commenced and there is a link on the council’s website where residents can see the work that is held in our collections http://www. greaterdandenong.com/arts There is also a place where comments can be left, so that if residents have information about old photos and the people who are in them they can provide further details. One of the best ways to get involved is to offer
your skills as a volunteer to the project of cataloguing and digitising heritage items. The team meets on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the archive. Call council volunteers co-ordinator Patricia Roche on 8571 5335 for more information. Also, keep an eye out for heritage displays and exhibitions across the municipality, advertised on the council’s website.
nobly as it has done in the past. 50 years ago 1 March 1966 Chased man with ‘sock on his hand’ Dandenong: A game of hide-and-seek played around supermarket between two policemen and a tall dark man who wore a sock on his left hand, was described in Dandenong Court last week. It was a hot and stifling night and the two divisional van members wondered why a man should be wearing a glove when they saw him flitting through a used car park. They ran him to earth behind the supermarket where he was found partly concealed in a heap
of cardboard boxes. As a sequel, he faced two charges in Dandenong Court last week and was sentenced to one month’s goal and fined $20 on the tampering count. 20 years ago 5 March 1996 Library is still for sale Casey council will consider alternatives to the sale of the Joseph Banks Library site after pressure from elderly migrant groups. A say on what you will pay
‘ALY’ is the sort of asylum seeker success story that people don’t hear enough about. He’s the 100th client trained up and job-ready at Asylum Seekers Resource Centre’s Dandenong office that has since found work. He’s also the fourth client taken on by Dingley manufacturer Rylock Windows and Doors in recent months. ‘Aly’ has been on a bridging visa since he arrived by boat from Pakistan. Before he got work rights he was struggling on 80 per cent of the dole allowance in a crowded share-house and couldn’t afford to study IT. Under the ASRC’s tutelage he honed his English, resume, job interview and job-seeking skills. The centre helped ‘Aly’ gain a work placement with Rylock as a frame assembler a month ago. ‘Aly’ said he’s just excited to be working and keen to do whatever on-the-job training is required. He wants to please his employer. Rylock operations manager Mark Dunham said all four recruits, each from different nationalities, have impressed with their reliable attendance, attitude and endeavour. Surprisingly, it’s generally hard to find employees. Mr Dunham tells of Australian-born people they’ve interviewed and offered
GREATER Dandenong ratepayers can have their say on their council’s next budget. An online forum will take ideas and foster discussion on what the community values most until the end of March. The people with the five ideas that receive the most votes will be invited to present at a special budget session on Wednesday 6 April where the council will discuss the benefits and challenges of each idea. The council will review all ideas during the 2016-17 Budget process. Mayor Heang Tak said the introduction of rate capping meant tightening the council purse strings. “Rate capping will affect the way we provide services, but we genuinely want to hear from our community about the services and infrastructure they can’t live without,” he said. “Budgeting to run this city is a huge task, but we want to involve the community in the decisionmaking process.“ Join the conversation at oursay.org/greaterdandenong/budgetpriorities.

He’s seen an Ethiopianborn worker with little English flourish with perseverance. Within a few years that worker broke down language barriers and became a supervisor. Another new-arrival worker has kicked on to start their own business. ASRC employer partnerships manager Sonia Mackie said often new arrivals’ English skills soar with the chance to practice them in a workplace.
New employers are nervous taking on asylum seekers and are not sure how the visa system works but are soon won over, Ms Mackie said. “I say to employers that I or any worker can just get up and leave within three months.” As Mr Dunham has found, Aly and other clients have shown far more sticking power.

All hands in YOU put your right hand in and donate cash to kids - that’s what it’s all about. Whoa, the Hokey Pokey Australian record could fall at Yarraman Oaks Primary School next term. But the Noble Park school needs to raise $770 to pay for record officials to attend their group dance, which will need to top 467 people to claim the “largest gathering of people doing the Hokey Pokey” title. Teacher Elissa Sewell set the current record at her former school and said that with only 180 pupils, Yarraman Oaks would call on parents and secondary school and kindergarten students for help. “We want it to be a truly community event,” she said. She said the event would help the school achieve its aim of becoming a community hub and the Hokey Pokey was a feel-good dance that fit with the school’s healthy living messages. Call the school on 9792 4406 to support the record attempt.

ELDERLY Keysborough citizens can escape isolation thanks to a $10,000 grant. Chap Chow from the Xinjiang Chinese Association of Australia said the group would use the Stronger Communities Grants Programme cash to buy iPads and cooking utensils.
“One big concern of the senior citizens is social isolation, and especially for those whose native mother tongue isn’t English,” he said. “To alleviate their problem of social isolation, now we’re talking about the digital world.” The cooking utensils will
enable the association to provide lunch for 220 people at a fortnightly gathering in Noble Park. Applications for round two of the grants programme are open until 1 April. Visit investment.infrastructure.gov.au/ funding/scp.

‘Likeable’ but still a risk By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN hobbled by illness has been declared a risk to the community after pleading guilty to his latest arson and drinkdriving offences. Murray Craw, 55, of Dandenong, who is fighting prostate cancer and type-two diabetes, wore a beanie as he pushed a wheeler into his Port Phillip Prison court link on 29 February. He had been in custody for 82 days, facing his ninth drink-driving offence, 13th for driving while suspended and fourth arson-related charge. Among his recent charges was setting a dump master skip full of cardboard alight at the back of a Hampton Park servo about 3.15am on 9 December. According to a police summary presented at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, Craw set the blaze with a cigarette lighter,
stepped back and lit a cigarette. He then walked away. While waiting for a bus in Traralgon West on 6 June, Craw lit a large pile of rubbish behind the bus shelter on Princes Highway. While passing motorists reported the fire, Craw walked out from behind the shelter and boarded the 7.40am bus to Morwell. CCTV footage on the bus showed a large fire continuing to burn as the bus drove on. Firefighters confined the fire damage to a 1.5-metre by 0.5 metre area, without it catching the wooden and metal bus shelter or road reserve. During a police field interview, Craw said he lit the fire because he was cold, admitting he didn’t extinguish it before he left. On 20 September, Craw ran a red light
and crashed into a pregnant driver at the corner of Princes Highway and Heatherton Road, Noble Park North. The driver and her passenger were taken by ambulance to Dandenong Hospital for observation. An uninjured Craw, whose licence was suspended at the time, produced a 0.100 blood-alcohol sample at hospital more than 90 minutes later. Craw was also charged with stealing a helmet from a parked Vespa on Flinders Street, Melbourne. The accused returned it when the victim was alerted by his son: “That dude has got your helmet.” Craw later complained to police: “How can it be theft, he has got his property back. “Well, people stole from me while I was in hospital.” Defence lawyer Bernard Keating said
Craw desired to return to his Dandenong boarding house. “He did trades in New Zealand. He’s lived the life, so it’s more the pity he finds himself in this situation.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Craw was “likeable” but a risk to the community if his issues weren’t addressed. “In my opinion, you’re better on a corrections order than a parole order (when released). “From what I know of your past, drugs aren’t the issue. It’s the alcohol.” Craw replied: “Alcohol and putting other people in front of myself.” Craw requested the Journal “make it known” that it was the “people I have helped” that caused him to go to jail. He was ordered to undergo a community corrections assessment at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 7 March.
College tribute to founding principal CORNISH College has honoured its founding principal with a new learning space. Kerry Bolger returned to the Bangholme school on Friday 26 February to officially open the Kerry Bolger Centre. It has six classrooms for Year 4, 5 and 6 students plus breakout spaces. Mr Bolger led Cornish from its opening in 2012 until his retirement at the end of last year, following 20 years as head of St Leonard’s College’s Cornish Campus. “I was delighted to open the new building as it is testimony to what a community can achieve when it pools its resources and works with persistence,” he said.
“I hope the students enjoy the wonderful learning environment, and it will inspire them to be the best they can be.” Cornish College council chairman Rev Dr Robert Johnson dedicated the centre, which is part of a broader building improvement program the school is completing to meet a significant growth in numbers. This year there are 615 students from early learning (ELC) to Year 12, up from 543 last year and 220 when the college opened its doors. The school is also working on a senior learning centre for Years 10 to 12, a new middle school wing for Years 7 to 9 and the redevelopment of the arts, drama and music facilities.

Council lobbies for itself GREATER Dandenong Council has defended its use of lobbyists to “advance” community interests. According to the state register of lobbyists, the council had enlisted lobby firm Hawker Britton in the past two years. The firm’s directors, including Phillip Read, Claire March and Simon Banks, have occupied chief of staff and advisory positions in state and federal governments. Greater Dandenong chief executive John Bennie said the most successful recent use of lobbyists was the Springvale Road grade separation. “In this case, and any others (the) council may pursue, lobbying and advocacy costs are considered an investment by (the) council in better outcomes and invariably demonstrate good value for money.” Mr Bennie said lobbyists helped advocate on the council’s behalf, get access to decision makers and work towards more likely agreement. “Greater Dandenong Council will not hesitate to take prudent and legitimate steps to advance the interests of its community - people and businesses alike.” The council did not specify how much it had spent on lobbyists in recent years.

Kinders ease into prep SPRINGVALE kinder kids will now start their pre-school journey at school. Sandown Park Kindergarten has relocated to a $1 million centre at Springvale Rise Primary School that includes 36 new fouryear-old kinder places and maternal and child health services. Premier Daniel Andrews and Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos officially opened the integrated centre on Wednesday 2 March. It will also have the capacity to run playgroups and parents groups and to create a smooth transition for children as they move into prep. The State Government contributed $650,000 to the project and the City of Greater Dandenong also chipped in. “Springvale children and their families will benefit greatly from the opportunities and services this new centre brings,” Mr Andrews said. “We know that providing the very best in early childhood services greatly improves the life chances of every child and that’s exactly what we are doing.”

Numbers up at Dandenong kinders TWO Dandenong kindergartens are offering more than 100 new places and partnering with family services as one-stop shops. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams officially opened kinders colocated with the Dandenong and Dandenong West primary schools on Monday 29 February.
Both hubs will now also include maternal and child health consulting rooms. The Dandenong kinder increased its licensed capacity for four-yearolds from 29 to 80 and Dandenong West now has 80 places, up from 30. Ms Williams said co-locating
kindergartens with primary schools created a smooth transition for children as they moved into Prep. She said the State Government contributed $650,000 to each hub’s redevelopment and the City of Greater Dandenong also chipped in. “We know that the evidence
shows providing an integrated approach to early childhood education, health and children’s services improves outcomes,” Ms Williams said. “Children and their families in Dandenong will greatly benefit from the opportunities and services that these two centres bring.”

SOCIALLY SPEAKING Re: Protest is looking up Terry Walsh: The way I see it, there are three or maybe four houses that actually back on to the railway line between Sandown Park and Yarraman. All the others are separated by a roadway. Mile Creek near Chandler Road has a huge Rocla pipe drain buried underneath its full length from the racecourse. This creek carries huge amounts of water from as far away as Clayton North and when it rains - guess what? It floods. By putting the railway lines under it, you will have more than train noises to worry about! The sky rail is a great fit for this section of track as it already naturally drops 14 metres in height from Sandown Park to Yarraman. Let’s get on with it, now! Gaye Guest: The newest bridge in Dandenong is about 5.4 metres high and goes over the rail line so why dies the sky rail have to be so high? None of the bridges at the heritage stations are that high and they won’t be able to be altered! Also, how high is the EastLink bridge?
Just to give a comparison, I think I read it is about 5.4m high. Re: Cross over cut Terry Walsh: Sorry, Lindsay Bull, it’s obvious that the best solution for this area in Dandenong South is to simply close the Abbotts Road railway crossing. It will be best replaced by building the muchneeded and better-accessed Remington Drive/ Pound Road West link, especially for its instant access to the South Gippsland Freeway. Those businesses in Abbotts Road, both east and west of the railway line, will just have to go around to the new road overpass at Remington Drive/Pound Road West. Lindsay Bull: Thanks for your thoughts, Terry. Twenty-three thousand cars travel on Abbotts Road every day. If you had paid big dollars to set up a business with frontage onto this main road and signed a lease for the next five to 10 years I think you would have a different view. We have no issue with the extension of Remington but why would you close Abbotts Road?
Anyone with half a brain would agree two roads are better than one. The closing of Abbotts Road will cause job loss and a major stress on businesses that rely on the quick access over the train line. Terry Walsh: Lindsay, perhaps 22,000 of them would actually travel on the new Remington Drive/Pound Road West bridge instead of Abbotts Road if it was built! Abbotts Road is a rat-run for many, many drivers to avoid Greens Road and/or Thompsons Road further south. Most travellers in this area are heading to or from the South Gippsland Freeway and not the South Gippsland Highway. Closing the Abbotts Road crossing is the easiest, best and safest solution. Any businesses affected by this will just need to take into account that they might have to go around, along the new overpass further north. Lindsay Bull: If we have both roads open, drivers can make their own choice on which to travel, and businesses will still have their passing trade. It’s not rocket science.
DANDENONG Magistrates’ Court dock and two custody officers were not enough to restrain one highly agitated offender. The accused’s bail application came to an abrupt halt when he barrelled through the dock’s gate, bursting into the public gallery. Fortunately, two police officers were in
the courtroom and offered immediate reinforcement. There was some doubt over whether the accused would find the inner calm to resume his quest for bail. MORE than 10 per cent of Pakenham and Cranbourne line trains were late during January, Public Transport Victoria figures show. South East Metropolitan Greens MP Nina Springle said it was unacceptable that only 87 per cent of Pakenham line services and 89 per cent of Cranbourne line trains arrived on time in January. “Given a train can be five minutes late and still considered on-time, this is a disastrous result,” she said.” Do you agree? IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… A MAN recently felt the wrath of Dandenong Drug Court after bringing some of his stash to the courthouse. The man, who is on a drug treatment court-order, arrived at court with a mints tin containing drug “residue” a defence lawyer told a judge. He realised his mistake and threw the tin in a bin outside the court prior to being screened by court security. Unluckily for him, an alert PSO retrieved the tin and arrested the man.

Growing need AS A ratepayer I am happy to hear that Greater Dandenong Council is actively advocating to keep Maralinga Primary School as a future educational site. Given three new kinders have been opened through the Scanlon Foundation in this area this week, you realise that our school population is again growing given that people are happy to invest again in our municipality given its close proximity to EastLink. This growth was muted by Carl Wulff when he was CEO. He said house prices that stopped at Warrigal Road years ago would eventually extend to this area once EastLink was built and it has. Given there has been investment into early childhood, it is wonderful that the council is helping to fight the campaign to save Maralinga. It is a win-win situation as the Education Department already owns the facility and families shop around for which school best meets their child’s needs. In the 1980s parents would drive kilometres to Bangholme and the original Keysborough Primary so their children had safe, smaller school yard environments to cope with. From personal educational experience, not every child copes in supersized educational environments and Maralinga fits this brief. It would make a wonderful community hub, an environmental campus, a flexible learning environment like Oakwood, a flow-over campus for secondary, a tertiary campus but, best still, it would make an even better learning environment as a primary school. The best news is that it is still standing and as the Education Department owns it, it would only have to make cosmetic changes to it and clean it up again. One thousand more kinder places soon translates to foundation school students throughout the municipality, not necessarily at those schools with early learning centre hubs, as parents who are renting buy in the area. Gaye Guest, Noble Park.

Entrenched enemies By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS RAIL trench warfare has opened up between the State Government and the Opposition over sky rail through Melbourne’s south-east. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan, whose sky rail project has been fiercely criticised in recent weeks, attacked the Liberals’ option of “ugly rail trenches” on Wednesday. Ms Allan claimed the Opposition’s rail under road option would close parts of the Dandenong rail corridor for 230 days during construction.
Dump trucks carting an estimated 86,000 loads of excavated soil, as well as buses, would clog local streets for two years, she said. “If the Opposition got their way, local streets would be clogged with buses and dump trucks, major roads would be repeatedly closed for long periods of time and the removal of nine of our worst level crossings would be delayed once again.” Ms Allan said the government’s sky rail proposal would lead to less road and rail closures and less truck movements during the elimination of nine level crossings, including three in Noble Park.
“The ... elevated solution means ... kilometres of new parks, bike paths and community facilities, rather than ugly rail trenches.” Meanwhile Opposition planning spokesman David Davis said a state-commissioned report released on Wednesday was flawed. Mr Davis said the $125,900 report compared Glenferrie - a soil embankment with no diesel trains - to the sky rail’s 12-metre tall pylons which are expected to carry at least 38 V-Line trains daily. The timing of the report by RMIT ur-
ban design lecturer Ian Woodcock showed that the sky rail project had been chosen before September 2015, Mr Davis said. It made a “further mockery” of the government’s claim that it consulted the community. “Ian Woodcock’s views on sky rails have been well-known for a long time and it is clear he was commissioned last September because the government knew it was going to adopt sky rail and wanted some so-called independent support.” The proposal was publicly unveiled by the government last month.
Girls get their lifesaving locked in By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS COUNTRIES don’t get more land-locked than Tibet or Afghanistan. But Lifesaving Victoria’s trainee recruits Tenzin-Cheosang,Tsering-Kyi and Elaha Naziri ought to know about swimming against currents and tides. The trio are trailblazers: Ms Cheosang and Ms Kyi, both of Noble Park, are believed to be the first Tibetan-born lifesaver trainees in Victoria, and Ms Naziri, of Lyndhurst, the state’s first female lifeguard from Afghanistan. None of the three grew up near water; over the past year the teenagers have learnt to swim strongly enough to make the lifesaver grade. They then took a week’s intensive training in first aid, signalling and other skills at Edithvale Surf Lifesaving Club. They are among seven graduates of the multicultural trainee program this year - and among 30 in the past five years - to have followed the footsteps of Dandenong’s pioneering Afghan-born lifesaver Imtiyaz ’’Minty’’ Saberi. Lifesaving Victoria multicultural projects officer David Holland says the role-models “kicked down the door” and will help spread the water-
safety message to new arrivals. “New arrivals are the ones most at risk. They’re most represented in drownings in this state. “Water safety is often a low or zero priority in their countries, and it’s hard to bridge that gap in Australia.” Many of the trainees have come from the Noble Park English Language School and its Casey campus. Mr Holland said he found it amazing that the girls have made the effort - outside of their efforts to settle in - to “protect Australians”. And that they learnt to do so in such short time. “The girls wanted to do this course last year but their swimming wasn’t good enough. So what we did was put them through swimming lessons for a year. “It was quite a challenge for them.” The trainees now become powerful role-models, Mr Holland said. “Other kids and families see them at the beach and water safety becomes a conversation. “They learn about the worth of water safety and the worth of learning to swim. “We hope many more will follow.”

Beating its own drum By CASEY NEILL
Drum head technician Stuart McKellar takes visitors on stage to show them the lighting and grand piano during a Pictures: ROB CAREW back-stage tour on Friday 26 February. 150772 activities such as workshops, classes and lectures. Identified participation barriers included a perceived lack of safety at night, parking availability and an unwelcoming facade. “The challenge is to promote Drum Theatre, its program and Dandenong as an
entertainment, cultural and leisure based destination,” the council report said. The Drum will develop a broader program of activities to provide more reasons for the community to visit and positioning it as a community and cultural hub. The plan is to encourage new theatre hirers, provide active arts participation
activities, build Drum Theatre awareness, activate all spaces within the venue for meetings, functions and programs, and focus on artist development to grow local talent. Measurable key performance indicators will be reported to the council annually.
Doing it for laughs TUESDAYS will be a free-for-all at Dandenong’s Drum Theatre. Drum Theatre director Greg Hordacre said the new Free For All Tuesday program was created to give back to the community. “We are encouraging people who work locally to hang around after work, socialise with some friends, perhaps have a drink here at the Drum and enjoy a free 50-minute show, direct from a Melbourne International Comedy Festival artist,” he said. “Great shows and fun experiences are what we do well and this is a great way to try something fun with friends or work colleagues. Free For All uesday makes it easy to experience Dandenong’s Drum Theatre and are designed to be a quick and fun wind-down for the end of a work day.” Sean Murphy’s Party Tricks stand-up comedy show will be the first Free For All Tuesday event. On Tuesday 5 April, he’ll dish the dirt on the world of children’s entertainment in the theatre’s new cabaret seating mode which includes table seating on the stage.

THE Drum Theatre will grow into a community and cultural hub if a new strategy goes according to plan. Greater Dandenong councillors passed a 10-year strategic plan for the venue at their 22 February meeting. During the meeting councillor Sean O’Reilly questioned whether the council should be subsidising the Drum to the tune of $700,000-plus a year. But Cr Jim Memeti said his comments were “a bit harsh”. “Council is not in the business of making money. It’s in the business of providing services,” he said. “It’s not fair on judging the Drum. It doesn’t have to make a profit.” Cr Roz Blades said ending the subsidy would increase access costs to the community. “We wanted it to belong to them,” she said. “The financial costs don’t matter because what the Drum has done to improve the perception of Dandenong is worth more than money.” Cr Matthew Kirwan said the Drum Theatre was essential to the Revitalising Central Dandenong project. “It shouldn’t just be seen as a performing arts centre,” he said. The Drum Theatre Advisory Committee (DTAC) was established in 2012 to provide the council with independent advice about the Drum’s direction. It prepared the strategic plan to guide the Drum though the next 10 years and generate greater community participation along the way. In May last year the DTAC commissioned market research to better understand community perceptions and attitudes to the Drum. This found that residents yet to experience the theatre wanted to participate in

Culture hangs by threads
Couple hit milestone By CASEY NEILL
“It’s a milestone alright,” Ted said. “We’ve been happy all our lives.” They now call Arcare Aged Care in Keysborough home after spending time in Narre Warren North and Clayton. “We hope to get to 70 years at least,” he said. “We’re both pretty fit, especially here, we get looked after so well.” Celebrations will include a musical performance and high tea. “A lady gave us the most beautiful bunch of red roses yesterday, and we hardly knew the lady and I don’t know how she got out - she must have got her relations to buy them,” Ted said. They’ll have a family celebration after their eldest granddaughter ties the knot on 13 March. Shirley, 81, paid for the wedding dress and has already started saving for the next granddaughter’s gown. Ted, 83, conceded there should be plenty of time to put enough pennies aside - she’s only 12 years old. He said there were 19 in the family, including children, spouses and grandchildren.
TED Poynton met his wife Shirley in her mother’s Maribyrnong lounge room. His brother had been dating Shirley’s sister and both boys were in the home when Shirley came home from the pictures one evening. “She had an eye on me,” Ted said. “We’ve never been apart for more than a couple of days ever since. “That was 65 years ago. “We used to go to the pictures. I had a motorbike. We’d drive all over the place. “She did the courting on the back of the motorbike.” Ted lived “across the river” in Essendon at the time. “We had a nursery, my parents and brother ran a big nursery at Essendon called Poynton’s,” he said. He and Shirley married at a Presbyterian church in Footscray next door to the girls’ school that Shirley attended. On Thursday 25 February they celebrated 60 years of marriage.
ARTISTS need to flag their interest in Cultural Threads by Friday 11 March. The City of Greater Dandenong will celebrate textile arts and cultural diversity through the return of the program in August. It was a finalist for Vic Health’s Building Health Through Art Award in 2015 and will deliver art installations, creative programming and interactive workshops across the municipality. The council is looking for artists who are interested in getting involved through facilitating workshops, delivering community-based projects or creating temporary installations. Through the medium of textiles, people are encouraged to connect, trade skills, share stories and interweave their cultures. Events will be held at venues across the municipality including at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, the Drum Theatre, Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens, Greater Dandenong Libraries and Harmony Square. Intricate and colourful installations will adorn the city throughout the event. Visit greaterdandenong.com/culturalthreads for a full brief and express of interest form.
Ted and Shirley Poynton have been together almost every day since they met. 150701

Show appeals to all By CASEY NEILL HARNESSING multiculturalism is the key to building a sustainable Dandy Show, a working group has found. The Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society and Greater Dandenong Council representatives came up with ways to do just that, and other room for improvement to keep the show viable. Cr Matthew Kirwan told the 22 February council meeting that the society found the working group’s five meetings since September 2014 “very beneficial. He said the show committee trialled some changes at last year’s show and at-
tendance was up 14 per cent. A council report on the working group said that “should this trend continue, it is expected that the Dandenong Show could remain viable and relevant into the future. The event is in its 145th year and is held at Greaves Reserve each November, following long-established Victorian Agricultural Society rules. Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) community market research will shape new promotions and show programming, including cultural performances and diversity in arts and crafts. There’s a new Dandy Show Facebook
page and an Instagram account is in the works to harness renewed public interest in cake decorating and handicrafts. The council’s youth services team will work with Rotary to develop a youth-led music initiative along the lines of Battle of the Bands. The review identified new corporate networks that could generate sponsorship. Feedback collected from 2014 show attendees recommended a more pedestrian-friendly layout, different attractions and a desire for more seating and shade. The working group also prompted the society to create a detailed business plan. The investigation followed a notice
of motion from Cr Kirwan in July 2014 seeking a report on ways the council could work with the society to grow the show into a key regional event. The council has supported the show over the past 11 years with funding totalling $167,000. It granted $20,000 last year, plus support in the form of assistance from officers, ground preparations and reserve maintenance. Do you attend the Dandenong Show? Cultures draw on diversity GREATER Dandenong’s diversity will be in the spotlight next month. Cultural Diversity Week runs from 12 to 20 March and Harmony Day falls on 21 March, and both are designed to promote community harmony, awareness, understanding and mutual respect for all people. Greater Dandenong will host the Harmony Festival: Step into Our World in Harmony Square on Wednesday 16 March, from 4pm to 8pm. There’ll be an international dress parade, a multicultural concert and community stalls. Mayor Heang Tak said events like these showcased the rich range of customs, histories, foods and faiths that made Greater Dandenong an interesting and vibrant place to be. “Our city is proud of the diversity we embody, and we love to celebrate not only what makes us all different, but all the wonderful things we have in common," Cr Tak said. The festival has been organised by Springvale Neighbourhood House with the City of Greater Dandenong, Monash Health, Victoria Police, Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre, South East Community Links

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT
PROPERTY MANAGERS ARE IN THE KNOW OWNING an investment property is a great financial move, one that can provide a steady stream of income for many years according to Ray White Noble Park director Allison Grant. “Whether you have a single unit or an entire portfolio of houses for rent, a huge part of ownership involves managing and maintaining your assets,” she said. “When it comes time to fill your properties, you want to make sure they’re as enticing as possible. “The best technique for making your asset a home that people will want to rent is to put yourself into the shoes of potential tenants. “Think about what features of a home you would look for, should you be house hunting. “Building up a reputation as a good landlord can make your investment property journey much easier so placing your rental
homes in the hands of an experienced professional is a smart move. “While it will cost you a percentage of your rental income, using a professional property manager to keep tabs on your investment will take much of that stress off your hands.” Harry Li of I-Sell Group Springvale said most people realise that property management is an important area, but what does it entail? “It includes finding tenants for the landlords, making sure rents are being collected, that both landlord and tenant are satisfied and that the property is being kept in the right conditions,” he said. He said as with most areas of life there were different levels of experience and expectations but it was important to look for a quality property manager who really looked after the property and was responsible for it.
Harry said it was important to meet with a prospective property manager and find out what services they provided. He said longevity was vital as it could be a challenging role. And while landlords may be tempted to “save some money” and manage your own property Harry explained that this could sometimes cause more headaches than it was worth with agents offering experience in picking tenants and dealing with the other time-consuming factors involved in renting property. Barry Plant Dandenong department manager Steve Kitney said there were important questions to ask a prospective property manager and not just the price and when they can start but questions that will uncover what level of service landlords can expect. “What you really need to know is how many properties do the
agency handle,” he said. “A small boutique agency might have 150 properties but with the smaller amount comes less experience; a large agent might have 1000 properties.” He said it was important for landlords to know how many properties agents managed, with 200 being a good number to ensure landlords were getting the best service for their investment. Mr Kitney said asking who would be handling the property and how long they had worked there was also important. He said many agents had a high turnover of staff. Mr Kitney said it was important to look for stable staff at a pro-active agency ensuring not only continuity but that someone would be invested in making sure properties were handled correctly and any potential problems were addressed early or before they come up.

RISING THROUGH THE RANKS Industry ranking reveals LJ Hooker Hampton Park is among Australia’s best - securing a position on Australia’s prestigious 'Top 50 Sales Offices’ ranking and cementing them as one of the country’s best real estate offices. After a stellar performance over the 2015/16 financial year, the agency has been ranked 42nd in the country. The ranking, published by Real Estate Business (REBonline) is determined by a number of measures including, sales volumes, staff efficiency, the number of listings and sales conversion numbers. The Hampton Park office was one of 11 LJ Hooker offices featured on the list, almost double that of any other network on the list. This achievement further cements LJ Hooker as the leader in excellence in real estate. Agency principal John Deo said the ranking proved that the agency was always striving to achieve the best result for their clients. “We are committed to our customer and
assisting them through their real estate traction in a stress-free and enjoyable way,” he said. “I’d like to thank the team at LJ Hooker Hampton Park for all of their hard work, without the skilled, knowledgeable and experienced staff this award would not be possible.” The network's CEO Grant Harrod praised John and the entire Hampton Park team claiming the title was recognition of the office’s attitude towards superior customer service. “Being named in the Top 50 best real estate offices in the country is a colossal achievement for LJ Hooker Hampton Park and is a testament to the office's commitment to their local community,” Mr Harrod said. “LJ Hooker is the most recognised brand in real estate; however, it is the professionalism and dedication displayed by offices like Hampton Park that makes LJ Hooker the most trusted.”

She explained that the Voice Interests and Education of Women (VIEW) movement supported the Smith Family’s Learning for Life program. “To break that cycle of disadvantage, it has to be through education,” she said. Ms Brooks recently attended a university graduation ceremony for Learning for Life students who achieved degrees in such subjects as medicine, science and engineering. “It just shows the end result of all the fund-raising that you do,” she said. Shirley Constantine and her neighbour Gwen Matthews are the only founding members still involved with the group. “I had just finished my degree at Monash University and I was a bit at sea and looking for something different,” she said. “I went down to the interest group at the Dandenong Town Hall and there was my neighbour, Gwen. We went independently. “They fired us up with the idea that this was a group for women and an opportunity for women to develop themselves professionally.” Ms Constantine said Rotary didn’t take women at that time. She’d left her purse at home so Ms Matthews lent her the joining fee.

dent thinking ‘I won’t have to do anything’ I very quickly had to move up.” She said most of today’s members were retirees and she’d like to see that change. “We’re trying to get younger people in because that’s how you keep things alive,” she said. “I was here for the first meeting
and I hope I’m not here for the last one.” Hallam’s Natasha Barry, 20, is paving the way. She attends with her mum Kaylene, grandmother Beryl and aunty Annette Nugara. She joined two years ago “to get away from the boys” and enjoys the friendship. The club’s president Dianne Black has been a member for 22 years and reminisced about various dinners, outings and activities. She recalled Christmas pantomimes, particularly a member playing the part of a baby in Sleeping Beauty, complete with an oversized and coffee-stained nappy. They knitted garments for the underprivileged during ‘baby month’, dined at teddy bear picnics, and held a baby photo competition where members had to “try to pick which of the darlings transformed into the wise ladies at the meeting”. “I enjoy the night out with the ladies. They are all very friendly and it’s great to know that we’re supporting a worthy cause,” Ms Black said. “There will always be underprivileged people that need help.”

Robot scores By CASEY NEILL
DANDENONG High School students shocked themselves with their success in a national robotics competition. Teacher Wei Yuan Xin ran a robotics class at the school for the first time last year and didn’t expect his team would be Tournament Champion at the VEX Robotics World Championships qualifier. “We went there for education. We wanted to learn from everyone else,” he said. The four Year 10 boys competed against 12 other teams in the Nothing But Net challenge at Forest Hill College in Bur-
wood East on 5 December. They created a robot to score goals with tennis balls. “We were surprised to find that after nearly every qualification round we were ranked number one,” Mr Xin said. But they almost didn’t make it to the arena. Their robot was half an inch longer than the allowed dimension so they turned to a hacksaw just two hours before the competition started. “We chopped it off. We were lucky,” Mr Xin said. “Team work makes a really important difference. “This was one of the bestorganised teams.”
Team members Manilka and Nivindu said they viewed studying robotics as a starting point for engineering careers. “You can’t judge a book by its cover,” Nivindu said. “Our robot looked horrible but it did the job and we won.” They went on to compete at the Asia Pacific Robotics Championships at the Melbourne Showgrounds on 17 December but didn’t walk away with any prizes. But Manilka said it was a chance to meet people and find ideas. “We did come first out of Australia, and that’s a big achievement,” he said.
GREATER Dandenong District Girl Guides made global connections through fun activities to mark World Thinking Day. Monday 22 February is also the joint birthday of Lord and Lady Baden Powell, founders of Scouts and Girl Guides. The theme for this year’s World Thinking Day was ‘connected’. The Greater Dandenong girls made New Zealand performance props called pois and had a live demonstration of flaming pois. They decorated origami hearts with the Japanese character for happiness and peace, played a game called dragon tag, and collected funds to help girls in underprivileged countries across the Asia Pacific to enjoy Guides. The Guides units in Noble Park and Springvale cater for girls aged 6 years old to 14 years old and are open to new members at any time. Qualified leaders run the programs and prospective Guides are welcome to visit a unit. Adults are also welcome as members or volunteers. Call Helen Smith on 9795 3250 or email h.smith@guidesvic.org.au for more information.

ST JOHN’S Regional College has been the first choice for Catholic secondary schooling in Dandenong for more than 50 years. The safe, encouraging and challenging environment at St John’s allows students to grow and succeed spiritually, academically and emotionally. Curriculum and co-curriculum programs are designed to ensure the highest possible quality of learning experience and a sense of belonging. Every facet of St John’s, both in and out of the classroom is built upon five guiding principles - faith, learning, integrity, service, community. These guiding principles are reflected in the actions and behaviour of both teachers and students. St John’s aims to provide an educational program which develops the whole person - the spiritual, social and physical as well as the academic. From the STEP Program in year seven, which focuses on transitioning students from primary school to secondary school, through to the wide range of VCE and VET subjects, VCAL and enrichment programs, all students are able to find their place at St John’s. Looking forward to an exciting future
Big future plans IT’S now back to school for many young people with the commencement of university programs and the beginning of new pathways. Former Mater Christi student and Belgrave resident Isobelle Caterer has entered the course of her dreams, film and television at Swinburne University. “I love the artistic world, especially the magic that is film. “I’m so excited about this course where I can immerse in the industry and explore my and others’ creativity in this generation of filmmaking,” said Isobelle. As a passionate drama student, Isobelle also received a VCE Season of Excellence Award in Top Class and will be
performing on 21 March at The Arts Centre, Playhouse Theatre. Isobelle was among many students recently recognised by Mater Christi for their high achievements in 2015. The college prides itself on developing strong, resilient young women who will thrive in whatever path they choose. “We continue to be affirmed by the diversity of achievements as evidenced by students attaining scores of 40 or higher in 28 different studies as well as by the array of pathways being pursued. “Overall 94 per cent of our students were offered tertiary places,” said principal Mary Fitz-Gerald. Students were offered places
in courses as varied as engineering, event management, interior design, animal and veterinary bioscience, nursing, legal practice and film and television. “The diversity of pathways is very exciting and reflects the adventurous spirit of our girls as they pursue their individual goals and aspirations. “It also reflects the opportunities and breadth of programs available to the students while at Mater Christi,” said Mrs FitzGerald. Mater Christi is inviting visitors to tour the college on International Women’s Day, Tuesday 8 March between 9am and 2.30pm. Details of other tour dates are on the college website.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Mental health work push stress,” headspace CEO Chris Tanti said. “There is a strong connection between mental health issues, unemployment or risk of unemployment.” Headspace chief operating officer Kathleen Alonso said youth who came into a centre could be referred to the eheadspace service, and vice versa. She said it would help to get unemployed youths in the south-east back into employment. “What we will be doing is building strong relationships with industry to facilitate placements of young people in genuine jobs,” she said. “Through the eheadspace platform we’ve been piloting an approach and now we’re able to take it full-scale and we are seeing great results from that.” Ms Cash said headspace was among the first 20 organisations to receive Em-
By CASEY NEILL A $2 MILLION online lifeline will help unemployed youth in the south-east to get into work. Employment Minister Michaelia Cash announced the Empowering YOUth initiative grant at headspace in Dandenong on Friday 4 March. The cash will enable headspace to take its world first Work and Study service around the country through its online portal eheadspace. Through web chat, web conferencing, phone and email, youths trying to find work or study options can receive real-time advice, information and support. “The majority of young people that present to eheadspace experience issues such as depression, anxiety and study

powering YOUth grants to help vulnerable young people into sustainable employment - “proven organisations on the ground who already have a track record of getting young people ready for jobs”. “It is unacceptable that there still remains a 12.7 per cent youth unemployment rate across Australia,” she said. She said the key was “working with organisations to think outside the box and ensure that we are properly targeting youth who are at risk of being long-term unemployed”. Liberal Bruce candidate Helen Kroger said the initiative was “going to create more jobs for young people in Dandenong”. “It’s the rubber on the road that makes the difference and this is the rubber on the road,” she said.

By CASEY NEILL AUSTRALIA’S newest abattoir is sending beef around the world and bringing jobs to Dandenong South. Australian Meat Group (AMG) opened in Hammond Road last July. “It was an existing site for an abattoir so most of the approvals were already in place, so that made it easier,” managing director Gilbert Cabral said. “It was a shell. We picked up a shell so it saved us some planning costs for approvals. “It made the process to fit out the existing abattoir and build the extension a lot more rapid. “The previous owners (Castricum Brothers) were operating an export lamb program here, so we had to raise most of the rails and most of the processing areas and some of the roof had to be raised to handle the larger carcasses. “This is probably the newest plant in Australia. “It’s very automated and it’s got a very good, strong base for automation to build on. “We’ve got a very strong cold chain management program, which gives you your shelf life.” The shelf life is important for the export market, which makes up about 80 per cent of AMG’s sales. “We have licences to export to many countries, including America, Japan,” Mr Cabral said.
AMG has another plant in Deniliquin for lamb and sheep but saw Dandenong South - known as the gateway to beef hub Gippsland - was “more of a beef area”. “We’ll draw cattle wherever we need to draw from and depending on seasonal supply,” Mr Cabral said. “We can do all breeds for different markets.” The plant can process 2500 cattle each week. “We’ll continue to build that up as our customer base grows,” Mr Cabral said.
AMG was a newly-formed company. “We were formerly owners of a company called Tasman Meat Group,” he said. “We sold to a multinational. “After a period of non-compete we’ve come back into the industry. “We’re a fresh new team but we’ve got extensive experience in the meat industry. “Our senior team is all ex-Tasman - our CFO, our sales manager and our livestock manager are all ex-Tasman. “Now that we’re back we’re going back to our old customers.
“They come and visit the site and see what we do, how we’re doing it.” The plant is running one shift and employs 250 people but is set up for a second shift and plans to grow to 400 workers. “My father was in the meat industry so I basically followed him,” Mr Cabral said. “I love it. “It’s been a great industry for me. “It’s good to develop the processing side and export product around the world, and speak to a lot of producers.”
BOMBARDIER’S Dandenong factory is leading the way in light rail. Australasian Railway Association’s (ARA) Light Rail Conference and Exhibition delegates toured the site on 23 February as part of this year’s event. Bombardier Transportation’s Australian managing director Rene Lalande led a journey through the design, engineering, manufacturing and servicing stages for Melbourne’s FLEXITY E-Class trams. “Bombardier is Australia’s only manufacturer of light rail vehicles, delivering local products for local conditions,” he said. “Light rail is an attractive and advantageous solution for Australia’s growing cities. “It is a fast, clean and convenient transport mode proven to benefit citizens, local economies and the environment.” Bombardier first introduced the FLEXITY EClass trams onto the Melbourne light rail system in 2013 and has now delivered 32 of the original 50-tram order to operator Yarra Trams.
Concerns Abbotts Road closure will be business block By CASEY NEILL CLOSING Abbotts Road in Dandenong South would cost jobs, businesses fear. “We already have a couple of companies who’ve said they have difficulty attracting workers to Abbotts Road because they don’t want to spend half an hour in the evening in a traffic jam trying to get out, or in the morning,” South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden said. “If that’s already a road block, this is literally a road block.” It came to light last week that the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LCRA) planned to build a road link over the Cranbourne rail line connecting Remington Drive to Pound Road, and close Abbotts Road. It cited safety and money as the
main factors and did not put forward any alternative plans. “We were all blindsided by that,” Mr Boden said. “Our expectations were a number of solutions, of which this was one. “We do not support this solution. “We support Remington Drive, we do support Abbotts Road.” Mr Boden said the LCRA could be “far more creative in trying to find a cost-effective solution than you can in a residential area”. He suggested a single-lane overpass that brought traffic into the estate in the mornings and out in the evenings. “It would improve the situation, it wouldn’t solve it. It’s just a thoughtbubble,” he said. Team Systems managing director Shane Poulton said his business was next to the railway crossing.
He said he was concerned about property devaluation and being unable to lease it in the future, plus traffic. “If I am required to go to Hammond Road I will need to go through two bottlenecks - Remington and South Gippsland - instead of one,” he said. “It will take at least one hour to go up Abbotts Road onto Remington and down South Gippsland after 2pm or 3pm. “If it is late in the afternoon and I am coming back from Frankston Dandenong Road, I would be better to park at the end of Abbotts Road near the train crossing, park and walk across the tracks. “I would imagine this would be taken up by couriers, and a great deal of locals needing to visit someone at this end of Abbotts Road. “How ironical, someone gets run over after the level crossing has been
removed.” Mr Poulton said morning traffic would bank up on the South Gippsland Freeway exit at Pound Road, making exiting the freeway dangerous. “The Remington Drive extension will have major issues with large trucks entering and leaving the type of existing businesses that occupy them, causing bottlenecks,” he said. “My understanding is that Daniel Andrews promised to remove level crossings not put up brick walls. “This should not be counted towards the government’s numbers as the crossing will not have been removed. “It will be destroying businesses and affecting the main industrial growth corridor for businesses in south-east Melbourne.” Arco restaurant’s Lindsay Bull slammed the LCRA over a poorly-at-
tended information session which was held at Nissan on Friday 4 March. “After returning to my restaurant and seeing people who have businesses and property sitting at tables having breakfast, my question was ‘why didn’t you attend the LCRA meeting?’ - ‘I didn’t know about it’ was the answer from all,” he said. “We as business and property owners are concerned that if you cannot organise a simple meeting date and time and place, how on earth are you going to organise a major program of removing crossings?” He urged the LCRA to build the Remington Drive link and reassess safety at the Abbotts Road crossing. “We cannot make a knee jerk reaction just to find three years down the track it was an error to close Abbotts and try and reopen it. The damage to region will already be done,” he said.

Champions get together By JARROD POTTER BIGGER, strong and wiser the second time around, Mason Peatling had the ultimate end to his junior representative basketball journey - winning a second national championship. Taking his place once again in the Victoria Navy line-up, Peatling, 18, from Berwick, was one of sixth Victorians to go back-to-back at the Basketball Australia Under-20 Championships after a 91-61 grand final victory over Victoria White. The second championship was made all the more sweet for the Dandenong Rangers forward/centre as he shared it with so many familiar faces from his inaugural 2015 Victorian campaign. “It felt fantastic - great to do it with the same bunch of guys that went around last year,” Peatling said. “It’s funny, the whole year they’re your competitors, but you come together for a couple of months and play together for a week, then you’re champions forever and you remember that. “Second time around... we had the same coach, same assistant coach and team manager and physio - so it was special to do it with them again and it’s the last time to do that for most of us. “Even though it was back-to-back, it was the last time for a lot of us, too, which is special in itself.” Peatling said part of his great oncourt efforts came from a year in the Rangers’ SEABL ranks - as taking the big defensively assignments last season did a world of good for the dual national-champion. “It was a bit of a different tournament than last year - coming into it I was a lot better prepared physically,” Peatling said. “I sort of looked around and there
weren’t any SEABL imports to guard or anything like that - I think SEABL has definitely prepared me really well for this tournament and there was nothing that I wasn’t capable of handling.” Coming off the bench, Peatling’s task was more defensive than scoredriven and the 200cm relished the opportunity to square off against the rest of the nation’s best scorers. He took on the tougher challenges, with his main defensive highlight coming against South Australia where he racked up 15 points but, more importantly, he helped to turn a seven-point three-quarter-time deficit into a 98-86 victory. His tallies were irrelevant; Peatling only sought out team glory. “The thing about my tournament, there wasn’t one particular game where everything sort of happened - there were games where I scored three or four points, or even none, but I did everything I had to for the team,” Peatling said. “I didn’t stuff the stat sheet in any particular game but that one (South Australia) showed my emphasis, my intensity and what I needed to do for us to win a national championship. “I felt that when I was on the court my defensive presence really helped us and with the added responsibility I probably performed a little bit better individually.” Fellow Rangers Matt Owies and Chloe Bibby also reaped national championship victories in a very successful week for the Victorians. For now Peatling is back at Dandenong until the SEABL bye round and hopes to take whatever he can from the next few months before jetting off to the states for his freshman season with Eastern Washington University.

Brittany scores with shift to south-east By JARROD POTTER SOUTHERN United completed its risingstar forward-line with Brittany DudleySmith slotting into the pink-and-blue attack. Dudley-Smith, 22, is well known in south-east soccer circles, as she was one of the Casey Comets’ marquee players in the 2014 Women’s Premier League, and is now back in the region after signing on with the newly formed club. “It’s amazing - being close to home and I know a lot of the girls and playing at Casey actually helped as a lot of the Casey girls are here and I know how they work and we bounce off each other so it’s awesome,” Dudley Smith said. “It’s definitely a risk I had to take but I love it. “I love seeing fresh faces and what talent is out there and it’s amazing how much the girls have grown in talent as they come up through the ranks.” Higher ambitions drove Dudley-Smith to South Melbourne where she became an integral part of the championship winning side in 2015 as she booted 19 goals. She was set to continue with South Melbourne but with the reigning champions not included in the inaugural NPL Victoria Women’s competition, DudleySmith decided to stay in the top flight as part of the south-east consortium. Dudley-Smith will join up with former South Melbourne team-mates Saphri Lines and Tiffany Eliadis in Southern’s forward line and in many ways it was their insistence that got the New Zealand striker

to sign on with the pink and blue. “Tiff and Saph asked me to come down and have a bit of a trial and at the start as umming and arring, but now I’m here I’m excited to start the season with the new team, new club,” Dudley-Smith said. “I know how Tiff and Saph play up front so hopefully it will be a dominant three.” The NPLW season kicks off on Sat-
urday for Southern United and DudleySmith is ready to make her mark on the new competition. “It’s nerve-wracking but I’m more excited than anything,” Dudley-Smith said. “We’ve been training out at Mornington, which is lovely as they have amazing pitches - and training at Casey as well and we’re ready to go. “I think Southern this year, we’re the
underdogs at the moment, but you never can fault the underdogs. “It’s good with this new league coming up - you don’t know where the teams will end up ... everything is new so I just can’t wait.” She’s also joined up with a Southern United consortium club to coach as Dudley-Smith will take the reins of a Mornington junior girls team.
Teams aim to claim top prize FINALS cricket has descended on Greater Dandenong over the weekend as Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) started the march towards the premiership. Springvale South was the only Dandenong-area Turf 1 team in the hunt for the premiership and battled Heinz Southern Districts at home. Turf 2 is better represented by the locals as Keysborough battles St Marys in an all Dandy derby while Doveton North, Buckley Ridges and Springvale South are all in the mix to knock off minor premiers Beaconsfield in T3. With the Journal’s Sunday afternoon deadline, final results from the semis were unavailable at the time of print, but all cricket results will be available on the Dandenong Journal website - www.dandenong. starcommunity.com.au from Monday morning.

Berwick weathered the tough conditions early to cash in, despite losing early wickets to Steve Spoljaric (3/55). After Pilon’s input, the middle order consolidated around Ryan Crawford (38), Jack Williams (35) and Josh Holden (31). Cam Kelly (3/51) took crucial middle order scalps to keep the target down. TURF 2 St Mary’s (106) and Keysborough (9/88) might go the distance after a wicket-laden day one. Yoshan Kumara (3/31) and Gayan de Silva
(3/45) set the stage for a small chase at Coomoora, but Keysborough’s batting completely fell apart. Ruwantha Kellepotha (32) was the best of a sorry bunch as Corey Ely (4/25) and Cameron Roberts (2/21) seared through the Knights, leaving only Abhinay Motupalli (3no) and de Silva (5no) to chase the remaining 17 runs for victory on the first innings. Narre North (154) has something to work with following a late-order charge from Ben Doran (56).
Everything’s just Dandy in NPL 2 East By JARROD POTTER NPL VICTORIA 2 EAST - ROUND 3 DANDY delight swept through the town as Thunder and City walked away with comprehensive NPL 2 East victories. Dandenong Thunder continued its merry mayhem, booting a 4-1 win over visiting Murray United. It took a while to get going, but Thunder broke the deadlock via a familiar name on the scoresheet this season. Amir Osmancevic (38’ and 72’) opened the accounts with the only score in the first half and while it took a while to get going, the Thunder stole the show in the final 25 minutes. Veton Korcari continued his scoring spree with the well-capped Thunder legend given too much space as he slotted Thunder’s second for the evening and his third for the season. Osmancevic’s sixth of the season was the icing on the cake as the black-and-red army roared for another goal on home turf. Murray put the first goal past Frazer Maclaren this year late in the clash as Zac Walker finished off nicely in the 85th minute, but immediately gave it back through an own goal. Ladder leading Thunder will travel to Box Hill United for the match of the round - a first versus third thriller on Saturday afternoon. Dandenong City had a wonderful trip to the Goulburn Valley and drove off with a 3-0 whitewash. Halil Gur (7’) opened the accounts before
Gonzalo Freddi (31’) made it 2-0 at the break. Speedy forward Chris Antoniadis (54’) extended the margin to keep Goulburn Valley on the back foot. The Suns hadn’t set for the evening by then though, as Dandenong City keeper Damir Salcin had to work hard to save a penalty in the 72nd minute to emphatically keep his clean-sheet. City sits sixth on the ladder with a 1-1-1 record ahead of its Saturday afternoon clash with Brunswick City. Springvale White Eagles will play Kingston City away on Monday night and hoists Eastern Lions on Saturday afternoon. In the WNPL season opener, Southern United accounted itself well in its inaugural outing, but despite an early lead, the pink-and-blue brigade couldn’t hold off Box Hill United in the 1-2 result. Southern United will play its maiden home game at Lawton Park, Langwarrin on Sunday at 3pm against FC Bulleen Lions. In FFA Cup Round 2 qualifiers, Noble Park United lost to Sunbury United 0-3, Hampton Park Sparrows were bested 0-1 by Upfield, while Endeavour Hills Fire claimed a 2-0 win over Lyndale United and Keysborough SC also defeated Old Melburnians 2-1. Dandenong Warriors were set to play on Sunday afternoon after the Journal went to print.

VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - ROUND 17 (Day 2) FINISHING the year on a high note, Dandenong (252) beat Greenvale Kangaroos (105 and 4/169). The Kangaroos had to fight hard in the second innings to prevent the outright victory, but in the end the Panthers’ returned to form to bow out with a comphrensive triumph. Outside of Harry Dearden (47), the Kangaroos were ripped apart by the Dandenong quicks as Justin Butterfield (5/42) capped off an extraordinary season with his third five-for. The haul takes Butterfield to 40 wickets for the Premier season. Butterfield’s young apprentice Adam McMaster (4/23) had a phenomenal return to form as he found Adam Amin’s (1) edge before he castled James Rosewarne (0) first up. Butterfield and McMaster continued their antics throughout the day. Narre North debutant Josh Dowling (1/9 and 1/56) was miserly in the first innings and alongside fellow debutant Comrey Edgeworth, it shows just how far Dandenong’s young talent extends. Looking for an outright to cap off the season, Dandenong sent Greenvale back in, but the Kangaroos brought their best in the second innings as Amin (79) and Dearden (56) put on 136 for the first wicket and played out the overs. James Nanopoulos (3/31) was the best of the bowlers. The result leaves Dandenong 13th overall down one spot from last season - which is a disappointing end in many ways for a side that was there or thereabouts for most of the season.

DDCA - SEMI-FINALS (Saturday Results) SPRINGVALE South (2/38) was on the verge of a Turf 1 grand-final appearance after the first day of DDCA semi-finals. TURF 1 With a chance to get back to the grand final and avenge last year’s defeat, Heinz Southern Districts (168) had a horror start to lose Trevor Davies (0) instantly. The skipper Matthew Cox (65) held on as long as he could, but had little to work with throughout the order. It looked like Cox and Brad Downe (16) had resumed where they left off last time at Harold Road - putting on 65 for the second scalp - but Downe became the first of Malinga Bandara’s (4/64) victims. The middle order amounted to a minor obstacle for the Bloods to work around, as Cox succumbed after a gutsy half-ton to... Bandara. The former Test spinner had free reign over Heinz as field crowded around the lower order. Bandara called for silly mid-on, silly mid-off, slip, leg slip and a catching point to threaten the tail and it paid off. Ryan Patterson (25no) flayed a few over the top to try and keep the Cobras moving, but eventually ran out of partners as Bandara and Jarrod Armitage (3/30) cleaned up the tail. It wasn’t all one way traffic though; Heinz took two massive wickets late on day one, getting rid of Michael Vandort (1) and Nathan King (2). Harry Staude (22no) and Mitch Forsyth (9no) held on to leave 90 overs to hunt down a spot in the grand final; potentially the Bloods’ first finale since the 2013/14 loss to Parkfield. Cranbourne has been set a lofty target by Ber-
Doran’s knock saw off the worst of Dingley (1/70) - especially Jasenthuliyana Chathuranga (4/26) who had 15 maidens in a diabolical spell. TURF 3 TO 5 Beaconsfield (186) set an imposing target for Doveton North (1/21) after a strong start from Gehan Perera (54). Doveton North still has plenty to do after losing an early wicket, especially against the Tigers’ fleet of bowlers. Buckley Ridges (9/288dec) on the other hand had time to spare for a declaration as Suren Ekanayake (78) and Jake Cronin (85) flourished against Springvale South (2/27). It would take a miracle for the Bloods to book its spot after losing early scalps. Springvale (185) is extremely well placed against Dandenong West (5/6) in Turf 4, following a resounding knock from number three Thilanka Harsha (69). Harsha’s knock - especially in tandem with Pasindu Madushan (23) to set the stage for a strong tally, surprisingly only taking 49.2 overs. Dandenong West fell horrendously - especially at the hands of Randeep Sahota (4/22) to be 125 off the pace with five wickets in the sheds. Parkdale (124) is up against it defending its meagre tally from Lynbrook’s (2/37) advances. Chris Wilkie (36) was the best of the Dales’ brigade, but Lynbrook had plenty in the tank via Stephen Veal (3/20) and Jesse Walia (3/35). Berwick Springs and Doveton didn’t get under way in Turf 5, while Buckley Ridges’ (7/136) thirds already has defeated Dingley (122) with great bowling from Farhan Hussain (4/35). Pair run to the next level By JARROD POTTER TAKING their athletics to the next level under the tutelage of Corey Pendry, a pair of Greater Dandenong runners will test their mettle against the best in Victoria. Springvale Little Athletics all-rounder Bambino Moukassa Warel, 14, from Springvale, and Dandenong Little Athletics sprinter Krish Rajavel, 12, from Endeavour Hills, are off to the Little Athletics State Track and Field Championships after exceptional regional results recently. The Pendry Development Squad tandem flew around the Murrumbeena track at the recently held South Met-
ro Region Track and Field Championships. Moukassa Warel won gold in the high jump and 100m sprint and has taken plenty away from his time with the Pendry squad. “Everything went pretty well - I had ups and downs because I was training, as I’ve just started this season, so far everything has been good and I’ve been training with Corey and I’ve met such amazing people,” Moukassa Warel said. “Corey is an amazing coach and I’m thankful for that. “I’m looking forward to state so I can smash it out -
I’m going to state which I’m happy about.” Dandenong’s star sprinter Rajavel picked up the under-12 girls 200m and 400m titles and is confident she can back up her achievements at the state level. “It was unbelievable and really cool,” Rajavel said. “I came first in the 400m and I think my best event is the 400m - also came second in the 100m and first in the 200m. “I really want to win (at the state championships) so I’m going to try my best.” The state track and field championships will be held at Casey Fields on 19-20 March.

Dulnath Hendawitharana played a crucial semi-final innings to help his SSV team make the Picture: JARROD POTTER under-15 national cricket grand final. 151137
THERE was plenty of silver success for a local School Sports Victoria under-15 cricket tandem at the recently held national championships. Dulnath Hendawitharana from Noble Park North and Cornish College paceman Jakob Woinarski featured in the high-ranking side at the School Sport Australia (SSA) national championships in Queensland. The side was only pipped to the post by New South Wales Green, leaving the SSV lads with a respectable second-place
finish at the hard fought championship. Spinning all-rounder Hendawitharana saved the best for the finals as his start to the carnival featured a couple of 20s with Victoria Metro moving into the final four. Hendawitharana was the glue that held the Victorian middle order together in a heroic semi-final victory against Queensland. His gutsy 85-run stand with Triyan De Silva revived the Victorian hopes after the side fell to 5/20 early on. Hendawitharana smacked 75 in an emphatic
fight-back, hitting eight boundaries and a monster six, that pushed the side along to 203 by stumps. The bowlers seared through Queensland to book SSV’s place in the final. He didn’t have as much luck in the final, though, making 12 as the side fell for 135 from 45.5 overs, only to be chased down by New South Wales with nearly 20 overs to spare. Woinarski claimed nine wickets at the carnival with a best return of 3/33 against New South Wales Green in the opening round of the competition.
