The thin blue line By CASEY NEILL SPRINGVALE Police Station had to close its doors due to insufficient officer numbers, the Opposition has claimed in Parliament. But Victoria Police spokeswoman Danielle Fleeton says “unplanned leave” closed the station’s counter service overnight from the evening of Tuesday 8 March. “At this time, there was a greater need to have police out on the road where they are most needed rather than inside the station,” she said.

“Community members were directed to the nearest 24-hour station in Dandenong - a five-minute drive - from 11pm to make face-to-face inquiries.” But Opposition police spokesman and Eastern Victoria Region MP Edward O’Donoghue the situation reflected the “enormous pressure that police in the south-east are under”. “I would suggest this is almost, or may be, unprecedented,” he said. “The most recent police statistics show that crime is up and the most recent police statistics show that police

numbers are down. “The government has failed to provide the resources that police require.” Mr O’Donoghue said crime statistics showed a 9.4 per cent increase in crime in Springvale for the year to September 2015, and that the figure was up more than 20 per cent on the 2010/11 year. Police Association Victoria secretary Ron Iddles said the situation was unacceptable. “The public deserves better,” he said.

“It’s an indictment on the current state of wafer-thin frontline police resources that we are seeing some 24hour police stations closing their doors for often extended periods. “The obvious solution is to boost police numbers in order to keep pace with our state’s booming population growth.” Mr Iddles said Victoria’s population was growing by more than 100,000 people every year. “As long as police numbers remain stagnant, sadly, we will see more and more instances of supposedly 24-hour

police stations closing their doors,” he said. State Government spokesman Kosta Pandos said the Chief Commissioner directed the specific allocation of police resources based on operational need “and we will continue to consult closely with Victoria Police to ensure they are appropriately resourced”. “We’ve funded an extra 700 police personnel and delivered a record $2.5 billion to Victoria Police to help keep our community safe, which is more than the previous Coalition Government ever did,” he said. 1220246-RC11-16

WHAT’S IN A NAME DELVES INTO THE FASCINATING STORIES AND PERSONALITIES BEHIND SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST-KNOWN STREET NAMES. THIS WEEK THE JOURNAL LOOKS AT KINGSBURY LANE, LOCATED BETWEEN THOMAS AND LONSDALE STREETS IN CENTRAL DANDENONG AND NAMED FOR FAMILY BUSINESS KINGSBURY’S.

Kingsbury's had the lot ARTHUR Kingsbury moved to the then-cattle and produce market town of Dandenong in the early 1880s, built a comfortable brick house in Hemmings Street and started a plumbing and tankmaking business on the corner of Lonsdale and Walker streets in 1886. His younger brother Alec started work in the business in 1890, met Adelaide Bradford in Dandenong soon after, married and had a son Frank. The couple’s other three children Alan, Gil and Joy were born between 1908 and 1916 and the family home was at McCrae and Walker streets now home to Dandenong Plaza. Alec and Arthur worked the business until 1895 when Arthur heard about the gold rush in Kalgoorlie and left to settle there and sink bores. Alec recognised the potential that Dandenong had and decided to expand the business. He bought land at Foster and Lonsdale streets, moved the business there in 1902 and added hardware. He bought land along the tracks from the railway station down to the

Just east of the Cheltenham Road viaduct, Alec built a timber yard and joinery works in 1913. When World War II broke out Alec, then 66, was left to continue the business while Gil, 25, and Frank, 42, left Dandenong to do their duty. All motor vehicles were annexed by the government as part of the war effort and that left Kingsbury’s Foster Street store with an empty showroom. Kingsbury’s had started manufacturing bicycles from imported parts but materials dried up quickly when the war started. Gil returned in 1946. “When I came back to the shop it had a whole lot of secondhand bits and pieces,” he said. “All imports had stopped long ago

Gil was a foundation member at Dandenong Chamber of Commerce, formed in 1948, joined Rotary the

same year, and played a major role in forming the Dandenong RSL subbranch. Kingsbury’s became a major department store in the 1950s and moved into the electrical business, selling and servicing refrigerators, whitegoods, televisions and radios. “We built it up to be the biggest electrical store in Dandenong at the

time,” Gil said. “We sold service, not just the goods and that was our edge for a long time.” Alec and Adelaide Kingsbury passed away in 1966 and 1967 and the family sold the McCrae and Walker streets property soon after. In the 1970s, Gil decided he was unable to compete with the discount stores and scaled down to concentrate on bicycles and baby goods. He retired in 1982 and transferred Kingsbury’s to his nephew Graeme Frank’s oldest son - but kept an interest in the business until it was broken up in 1992 after 106 years. Lost in translation By CASEY NEILL AID agencies are using emergency relief funds to pay for interpreters, after the Federal Government cut translation service support. There are less vouchers, food parcels and financial support available to the community following the November announcement, South East Community Links (SECL) told a community forum at Edinburgh Hall in Springvale on Thursday 10 March. The organisation’s CEO Dr Rhonda Cumberland called on the government to immediately reintroduce free translating and interpreting services for emergency relief and financial counselling services. Afghan-born Sayema turned to SECL following a horrific family violence attack, seeking support to sort out legal and financial problems. “When I came back from the hospital I thought my life was finished, it was over, that I had no choices left,” she said. “But this community service has helped me, has assisted me with the interpreter with my banking issues. “The interpreter service is not only important for me it’s important for the entire community. “Australia is such a multicultural country that interpreters are very important for people to understand their rights.” Dr Cumberland said many people turned to SECL as a last resort. “They’re the people that we have most concern about, who will need interpreters to be able to take that next step to move on from a crisis or personal circumstance that is just simply bringing them down,” she said. “There’s more than 40 different languages spoken in our communi-

We rely on this service,” she said. “We got 30 days notice that the

service was being discontinued. We were taken by surprise. “It’s something that in the past has had a lot of bipartisan support from all layers and levels of government. “We’re committed to make sure that the quality of services to clients is not affected. “However, we have to face some realities. “Our biggest struggle as an organisation is looking at how we can continue to provide our services, particularly in the area of emergen-

cy relief.” Greater Dandenong Council community services director Mark Doubleday said the council was supporting the agencies in their advocacy to have the funding retained. “Greater Dandenong has a diverse community with high needs and the loss of the service represents a loss of access for clients to this area of need,” he said. The Journal contacted the Department of Social Services for comment but did not receive a response before deadline.

CRIME paid a measly wage to armed robber John Oscar Asifiwe. The 20-year-old Dandenong nursing student helped two males rob $1620 from a servo. Asifiwe’s take was apparently just $20 - at the risk of up to 25 years in jail. He and a male co-offender jumped the Dingley Village servo’s counter and manhandled its 24-year-old attendant about 2.30am on 2 April last year. The co-offender threatened the worker with a knife - though Asifiwe at one stage held the weapon as the register was forced open. A helper waiting outside threw a wheelie bin and a lawnmower through the front glass doors, allowing the bandits’ escape. In sentencing on 4 March, County Court Judge Phillip Coish said Asifiwe committed a “horrible act” that terrified the victim. “You played an active role though it may have been a last-minute action by you and it was unsophisticated.” The Tanzanian-born Asifiwe had a difficult, disrupted childhood before arriving in Australia in 2008. Thirteen years were spent in a refugee camp. He was a good student, who was active in the community, according to his mother. He changed when he caught up with a bad crowd. Asifiwe was entitled to be judged of good character with high rehabilitation prospects despite a subsequent affray charge, Judge Coish said. He took into account Asifiwe’s early guilty plea, remorse, youthfulness, no adult prior convictions and his co-operation with police. The accused’s admissions led to the prosecution of one of the co-offenders. Asifiwe consented to a two-year supervised community order of 200 hours unpaid work.

By CASEY NEILL AN APEX gang member has allegedly threatened to shoot a Greater Dandenong detective, approaching her in a cafe while she ate lunch with her partner. A poster displayed inside Dandenong Police Station warned officers that the teen or his partners, linked to a string of aggravated armed burglaries and car thefts, could launch an attack on the building. But Victoria Police Southern Metropolitan Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill told 3AW on Friday 11 March that he did not believe an attack would occur. “I don’t think the circular is an accurate reflection of what we’re

facing here,” he said. “I do not think the perpetrator actually said that he would enter the police station. “He knows where the member works and that’s the extent of it.” Asst Comm Hill said “an individual” had been arrested and was in custody, charged with aggravated burglary. The threatened officer’s father, Patrick Rampal, said she was on leave and had been diagnosed with anxiety and stress. “She was in the taskforce investigating that group and she has made several arrests and probably charged over 20 of them,” he said. The former policeman said the

incident happened about 10 weeks ago and involved two men of African descent. He said they spotted and approached his daughter, made a phone call and “a car load of about eight African men pulled up outside”. At that point, the officer and her partner left. “My daughter asked to be transferred to a different area completely away from Dandenong,” Mr Rampal said. “That was refused by the superintendent in Dandenong. “She wants to go back to work. My daughter’s a fourth generation police officer.

“If she’s in danger in Dandenong, move her away from the area. That’s all you’ve got to do.” Asst Comm Hill said Victoria Police was working with her to “return her to the workforce at a location where we can mitigate risk”.

Numan Haider, whose radicalisation and death is being examined by a state coroner

Son showed few signs of extremism, inquest told By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS NUMAN Haider betrayed few signs of his radicalisation to his family, his father told a coronial inquest. The family had no inkling ahead of the disastrous confrontation with police at Endeavour Hills, in which Haider stabbed two police and was fatally shot on 23 September, 2014. To them he was a “funny and funloving” son, who was close to his mum and who regularly helped her in the kitchen. A hard worker who was never aggressive, according to the family’s statement read in front of State Coroner John Olle on 7 March. “We never contemplated Numan would commit such an act of terrible violence.” His father - who cannot be identified - said he didn’t notice a change in Haider’s views, though his son was uncharacteristically out all night often in his final week. The family never talked politics, and Haider never discussed his own Islamic State sympathies with them. Haider was physically and mentally healthy. He didn’t take alcohol or drugs, Haider’s father said. The father was warned a month beforehand by an imam of a Hallam mosque that Haider should stop asso-

ciating with a man Lindim Sulejmani. “I knew he had friends that I did not know,” his father stated to the court. He was unaware of Haider’s Facebook post five days before the shooting, in which Haider posed in army camouflage and a balaclava, holding a Shahada flag. On social media, Haider had pledged total support for the Taliban. The father knew nothing of Haider’s waving of an Islamic banner in Dandenong Plaza earlier in September, not until Joint Counter Terrorism officers knocked on his front door. The family, according to their statement, didn’t know ASIO had serious concerns about Haider. His father told the court when ASIO agents visited his home in August 2014 that he didn’t know what ASIO was. The officers spoke to him and his son, warning Haider to stay away from “extremists” at the Al-Furqan Islamic Centre. The father was given a business card, but thought the intelligence officers were police. He told the court he instructed Haider to renew his passport in July ahead of a family trip to Germany and Afghanistan to visit relatives and find Haider a bride. The father did not know why his

son’s passport renewal was being held up and then his passport cancelled. The passport office wouldn’t give the father any reasons. He told the court Haider was very upset by the cancellation - one day before the shooting. That was the only change that the father saw in his son, according to his statement. Less than an hour before Haider stabbed police, he had returned home from an outing with friends in Warburton. He became distressed that his family allowed police to search his room that day. Haider went to his room, telling his family he wanted to pray. Five minutes later, he told his family he had to leave to return property to a friend. His father saw the water container and runners in his son’s hand, and had sympathy. He told his son to come home quickly. After midnight, police told the family that Haider had been shot dead. Without laying blame, the family stated they wanted to know what caused their child to turn. They believed Haider had been “manipulated” into making his rash, final actions. The family, nursing an “inconsolable grief”, wanted the inquest to examine the role of “intense policing”

and the pursuit of young men had in radicalising them. What was the effect of cancelling Haider’s passport the day before the shooting, they asked. Compounding their grief, the family had since been the target of “vitriol”. They stressed they were “moderate Muslims” who had fled Afghanistan due to persecution by the Taliban. Haider’s eldest brother told the court he grew up with stories of how their father had been captured and tortured by the Taliban. The brother at one stage gave a “lecture” to Haider, correcting his younger brother’s views on international politics. He spoke with Haider how to deal with the “putting down” and “bullying” of Muslims without getting emotionally affected. He told him to focus on studies and work. “It wasn’t about religion. It was more about not listening to my parents.” The brother was unfamiliar with Haider’s friends, nor was he a Facebook friend. He was unaware of Haider heading to Bankstown in Sydney less than two weeks before he died. When an upset Haider left the family home for the last time, the brother warned him “not to do anything stupid”.

A friend Sulaiman Sarwari, of Berwick, told the court that he saw Haider nearly daily in his final weeks but spoke only briefly by phone on 23 September. They both prayed and ate together often, together with Lindim Sulejmani. Haider was like a “blood brother” who joked a lot with him, Mr Sarwari said. Mr Sarwari said in a statement he knew nothing much about ISIS nor supported terrorism. He didn’t know of Haider’s interest in these things nor the Dandenong Plaza incident. Haider had become depressed because his family didn’t support his ideas and gave him a hard time, Mr Sarwari said. He believed Haider was physically bashed by family members, including in front of people at the Hallam mosque - though Mr Sarwari didn’t see any of the alleged assaults. During the inquest, Haider’s brother and father denied Haider had been struck by family members. According to the family’s statement, Haider’s mother can’t perform the “basics of cooking” without thinking of Haider. “Instead she goes to bed and she weeps.” The inquest continues.

Another attendee asked if incompetent service providers would come in and create a ‘pink batts’ debacle. The government was still working on accreditation standards and safeguards, Ms Skordus said. A mum of an autistic son without government support said she was willing to move to an earlier rollout area, out of desperation. Ms Skordus warned people couldn’t receive packages until they’d lived in a rollout area for 12 months. Audience member ‘Ramona’ told Star News how her husband had given up work to look after their daughter full-time for the past 27 years. They receive no funding, not

even a carer’s pension. Ramona says her daughter was struck by the rare Dravet Syndrome since being injected with a “triple” vaccine as an infant. She has severe epilepsy and highly specialised needs requiring 24/7 care. “The government says it’s your child. You look after her. “It’s not fair. My question is, will the NDIS pay us as carers and help us with respite?” Another mum told Star News that her autistic son’s $12,000 earlyintervention funding had dried up several years early, even with the family paying for services out of their own pocket. “Under the NDIS, we should be getting about $12,000 a year - the same amount that we get now for seven (years).”

These families - and the expected more than 105,000 Victorians - still have to wait patiently for the scheme. In Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia, the NDIS will start rolling out on 1 September 2018. It’s expected to take up to 12 further months for eligible people to enter the scheme. Federal Labor MP Clare O’Neil, who organised the forum, acknowledged people in the room had waited decades for a better system. “It’s impossible to conclude (the current system) is a good and a fair system. “In Australia people with a disability don’t get the resources they need to live an ordinary life.” She said MPs who wanted to cut the scheme were getting “punished politically”.

PERHAPS the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) sounds just too good to be true. How else to explain the hopelined anxieties among a 100-strong audience at an NDIS information forum on 8 March? More than two years until the scheme’s rollout in Melbourne’s south east, NDIS representative Anne Skordus was there to soothe doubts. Funding would double, and at last people with a disability had more freedom to choose how to spend their funding, she said. There was “no maximum and no minimum” funding package, NDIS would not affect participants’ disability support pensions and there would be few application forms. There would no longer be a waiting list for funded equipment such as wheelchairs. There are possibilities outside the square that weren’t possible in the pre-NDIS era, as demonstrated by a story shared by a father. He told of getting a group of parents pooling together for a supported share-house for their kids. Long-suffering families told the forum how under the current system, their funding had “run out” several years too early, and how they’d received precious little respite. There was a whiff of doubt whether governments would retain a fully-funded NDIS. How would it help the drastic shortfall of supported accommodation, an audience member asked. “If we can’t do something to deliver ... for your brother and son to be supported without being reliant

SPRINGVALE’S Be Ha has been inducted onto the Victorian Honour Roll of Women. The Vietnamese refugee was among 20 women to join the list at Federation Square on Monday 7 March, the day before International Women’s Day. Women’s Minister Fiona Richardson presented the awards to acknowledge and celebrate the extensive and lasting contributions of women in Victoria. Ms Ha fled Vietnam on a 12-metre fishing boat in 1979 and survived attacks from pirates and near-starvation on her journey to Darwin. She moved into Springvale’s Enterprise Hostel in February 1980 and has since worked tirelessly for her new home. “We were so grateful how Australia welcomed us and provided us with a second chance in life,” Ms Ha said. Greater Dandenong Council recognised her efforts on Australia Day with a place in its Community Hall of Fame. She established non-profit welfare organisation Springvale Indochinese Mutual Assistance Association (SICMAA) in 1982 and is today its president. She helped to found Hoa Nghiem Temple in Springvale, is treasurer for the Vietnamese Cultural Heritage Centre and the Vietnam War Memorial at Dandenong RSL, and raises money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. ROLLING against the tide, Keysborough Bowls Club is entering an innovation-rich renaissance. While many clubs are struggling or folding, this group has grown by more than 30 this season. It has broadened its reach to the young, teaching the game’s finer arts to students as part of Keysborough College’s curriculum. Barefoot bowls - with upbeat music and a sausage sizzle - is

building a following on Friday nights, with a possible darts club off-shoot in the wings. President Kevin Deer said a lot of the college students from diverse nationalities had grown to love the game, much to the surprise of some of the less sporty participants. “It’s not just learning the skills but learning how to organise a game. “They learn to work as a team and they have to work out different strategies on how to beat an opponent.

“They usually give us two or three years as teenagers, then start going on dates.” However, several of the latest 40-strong crop of bowls students will be sticking on as pennant match players. The 140-member, nine pennant-team club has been further buttressed by a recent councilfunded redevelopment. This comprises a synthetic green which allows for winter games, and a large, shady verandah in front of the clubrooms and near the bar.

‘Dump’ skyrail THE state upper house has called on the government to dump the proposed CaulfieldDandenong sky rail and instead put rail-under-road to eliminate nine level crossings, including three in Noble Park. Opposition planning spokesman David Davis, who introduced the motion passed on 9 March, said the government had to “listen to the community”. “It has gone forward with a model of sky rail before the consultation. “It is a sham consultation.” The motion also called for a “full, open Environmental Effects Statement”, without which “the results will be disgraceful and shocking”, Mr Davis said. “Today’s vote sends a strong message to the Andrews Government to rethink its plans for a cheap and nasty quick fix to

its level crossing removal commitments,” he later said. “Everyone wants level crossings removed - but they want it done properly with rail under road.” Greens South-East Metropolitan MP Nina Springle told Star News the project could go ahead without parliamentary approval - and so bypass the Legislative Council. Ms Springle said the Greens were undecided “given there’s no clarity around designs”. “There’s been no detailed information provided, so it’s impossible to make an informed decision. “That’s causing community frustration because they want answers and assurance that detailed work has been done, not just a press release and glossy animation.” Labor Western Metropolitan MP Cesar Melham, in speaking

to the Liberals’ motion in Parliament on 9 March, listed the project’s benefits compared to rail-under-road. Mr Melham said there would be less interruption to commuters and traders, less noise and a lot of new trees and vegetation would be planted. “At least we will be able to go to the next election in 2018 and say we have delivered that project. What do you think? “If they think it was a good project, obviously they will vote for the government to get back in. “If they do not think it was a good project, I am sure they will punish us.” Liberal South Eastern Metropolitan MP Inga Peulich retorted: “Build sky rail, and Labor is looking at political defeat. “It is looking at political slaughter.”

Skids gangs ‘shut down’ By LACHLAN MOORHEAD POLICE have arrested three alleged ringleaders of the Skids hoon gangs. On Monday 7 March a 23-year-old Mornington man was arrested at a Melinga Crescent home, a 21-year-old Greensborough man was arrested at a Cosham Court home, and a 21-year-old Mount Martha man was arrested at a Balcombe Drive property. It comes after five youths from Hampton Park, Cranbourne North and Cranbourne South were charged on Friday, with police claiming they had “shut down” the rival south-east and north-west Skids gangs. A total of nine people were charged on Friday 4 March after Taskforce Regarder seized a black 2003 Holden ute from a Dulnain Court home in Hampton Park and an orange VT Holden Commodore from a Greta Court house in Ferntree Gully in the early hours of the morning. Among those charged on Friday were two men from Hampton Park aged 28 and 23, two men from Cranbourne North aged 22 and 23, a 20-year-old Cranbourne South man, an 18-yearold Somerville man, a 28-year-old Langwarrin South man, a 19-year-old Gladstone Park man, and a 20-year-old Ferntree Gully man. They have all been bailed to face Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 May.

Acting Inspector Michael Daly told reporters outside Dandenong police station on Friday that police had “effectively shut down the south-east Skids and north-west Skids hierarchies”. “We’ve charged numerous people and, basically, put a stop to it,” he said. Insp Daly said the rival hoons had been meeting in the Melbourne’s northern or southern suburbs and holding “a contest against each other”.

MANY hands at South Eastern Melbourne Vietnamese Association did clean work in Springvale on Clean Up Australia Day. About 90 members collected 18 bags of rubbish, and a car tyre, in parks and streets on 6 March. And the double-decker hats came up a treat (as seen in the photo). EMPLOYMENT Minister Michaelia Cash said securing cash for a headspace online employment tool was easier with tech-savvy Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the helm. “If you stand close enough to the prime minister I’m pretty sure you can recharge most of your devices,” she joked at a recent launch for the resource at headspace Dandenong. BEFORE he was a fixture at Cornerstone Contact Centre, Don Cameron tried his hand at the Journal. During a recent interview he revealed he did work experience with legends Marg Stork and Phil McLeod back in 1986. “I went home and said ‘I met Marg Stork, an institution of Dandenong’,” he said.

“I thought she was immortal.“ THERE’S a lot said about Keysborough South these days. But does it actually exist? Councillor Peter Brown has taken issue with a recent email from a council officer referring to Keysborough South Bowls Club. Cr Brown wrote back that the area had been called Keysborough after his Keys family relatives. The new Glen Alvie estate off Hutton Road - commonly known as Keysborough South these days - was the site for the establishment of “Keys’ Borough”. “Councillors do not help by perpetuating the myth that there’s a Keysborough South postcode, nor do residents who have recently moved into the area,” Cr Brown wrote.

Plaza website hack By CASEY NEILL HACKERS have replaced the Dandenong Plaza website home page with a disturbing image of a Christmas-themed clown. An evacuation at the shopping centre on Saturday was unrelated, a plaza spokeswoman said. The Turk Hack Team claimed responsibility for the hack in text on the altered home page, which included a black background and a clown in a Christmas hat with bloodied facial scars. A comment on social media site Reddit claimed the text on the right translated as “We’re all gonna end up dead anyway, so might as well hack some websites”.

On Monday morning, www. dandenongplaza.com.au led to a page with a photo of happy shoppers and the message, “Our new website coming soon”. The plaza spokeswoman confirmed that on Sunday 6 March the shopping centre’s website “experienced a technical glitch which was addressed by our web developers and is now back up and running as per usual”. The drama followed a pump in the Walker Street sprinkler room being activated about 5.30pm on Saturday 5 March. “For the safety of our guests, the centre was evacuated and the issue was resolved and cleared by the fire brigade shortly after 6pm,” the spokeswoman said.

IN BRIEF Big rig heist THIEVES have stolen a $200,000 tip-truck from a Dandenong South business. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Marisa Owens said they cut a hole in a fence to enter the Princes Highway property between 7.30pm on Tuesday 23 February and 8am the following day. She said the thieves drove away in the new white, 2015 model Freightliner tipper, and urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

All hands on deck for clean-up day DANDENONG Police Paddocks Reserve has received a spruce-up from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. More than 200 volunteers took part in Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 6 March at the paddocks and in Langwarrin and Rockbank. They collected close to a tonne of rubbish from the three sites. “It was really good to see all the youngsters, especially the teenagers and children, participating in this event,” regional youth leader Muhammed Kaleemullah said. “It is all about educating on the importance of Clean Up Australia Day.” Youth leader and site supervisor Kashan Ahmad said: “We cleaned up lots of areas around the Police Paddocks. It was a really good job.”

Connecting people and communities

“This event is building awareness in the youth on how they can participate in the community and how to clean the environment.” Ahmadiyya Muslim Victoria and Tasmania Imam Syed Wadood Janud said Clean Up Australia Day also held religious significance. “Prophet Muhammad told his followers that cleanliness is at least half of your faith,” he said. “Furthermore, he said loving and serving your country is a part of your faith. “By participating in Clean Up Australia Day we are in fact fulfilling and discharging our duties as Muslims. “And in doing so we are helping the environment to ensure the preservation of this beautiful land.”

A SAFE containing $1600 and sporting apparel were among the loot from a Dandenong South robbery. Thieves forced entry to a retail outlet on Frankston-Dandenong Road, about 1am on Sunday 6 March. They spent two hours inside before fleeing with the safe, cash and clothing. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

Students in clean-up lead SCHOOL was a load of rubbish at Yarraman Oaks Primary on Friday 4 March. Students from all year levels took part in Clean Up Australia Day, turning tongs and gloves to Fotheringham Reserve in Dandenong, Oakwood Park in Noble Park North and their Noble Park school yard. Grade 3/4 teacher Janelle Strain said the school ran an environment group with a focus on sustainability. They recently took an excursion to Replas in Carrum Downs, which turns used plastic into useful products, and learned about the harm rubbish could cause to wildlife. “We’ve done some work also on rubbish in the ocean,” Ms Strain said. Greater Dandenong Council performed a waste audit at the school. “The kids have been involved,” she said. “They’re really passionate about it so we’re just trying to harness that.” Grade 4 students wrote persuasive texts about why people should participate in Clean Up Australia Day: I REALLY think everybody should be part

of Clean Up Australia Day because we don’t want our planet Earth to be covered in rubbish. My first reason is that lots of people love animals and lots of them are dead because of rubbish. I calculated that around about 47,304,000,000 plastic bottles are getting littered every year. So that is a lot of plastic bottles getting littered! The third reason I thought of is that Clean Up Australia Day is a great time to clean up our wonderful Australia. - Jamie Schmidt THE first reason I think you should participate in Clean Up Australia Day is so you can help save sea creatures like turtles, seagulls and many more. Rubbish can look like food to sea creatures and sometimes they get tangled in them and die. Another reason I think you should participate in Clean Up Australia Day is so we can stop putting useful stuff in landfill and recycle them so we can keep the Earth clean and so there is less rubbish around Australia. The third reason I think we should participate

in Clean Up Australia Day is so we can breathe fresh air and not pollution because that can make people sick. Another reason we should participate in Clean Up Australia Day is so we can stop bushfires because plastic or glass can cause bushfires. I think. The last reason why I think we should participate in Clean Up Australia Day is so other people can stop picking other people’s rubbish up. - Anida Jukic FIRSTLY, I think you should participate in Clean Up Australia Day because you would be helping clean up our environment and prevent making pollution. Secondly, you would be making the Earth healthy by cleaning up rubbish. Thirdly, you would be stopping rubbish getting out into the ocean and harming or killing the sea creatures. Last but not least, you would be making Australia look the best it can look by cleaning up Australia. So I think you should participate in Clean Up Australia Day! I HOPE YOU AGREE! - Methuli Arachchige

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST

Learn for their lives By CASEY NEILL SEBN celebrated International Women’s Day by showcasing two successful women in business. Dandenong Market chairwoman Julie Busch and Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) CEO Jane Grover spoke to a breakfast that the Greater Dandenong Council business group held at the Clarence Reardon Centre at Springvale Botanical Cemetery on Thursday 10 March. “Culture eats strategy for breakfast,” Ms Grover said, explaining that great people equalled great results. SEBN manager Sandra George told the packed room that women today had many opportunities. “Do we always take advantage of them? Probably not,” she said. Ms George said a lack of self-belief was often to blame. “We’re growing in that respect, but we’ve still got a long way to go,” she said. “Believe in yourself and take every opportunity to grow and not be afraid to grow.” She asked each table to nominate two women who had changed the world, and responses ranged from Rosie Batty to Oprah, and Germaine Greer to Florence Nightingale. “There are so many fabulous women who have changed the world over a number of centuries and there is no reason why we can’t continue,” Ms George said. Ms Busch joined Dandenong Market three years ago, and is also a SMCT trust member. “A strong sense of place and community spirit makes for a story destination,” she said. She said the venue was “a beginning for so many different nationalities to become merchants and traders”. “The market’s been a constant in the community as the city’s grown and evolved,” she said. “It will continue to be a platform for new and emerging businesses.”

BUSINESSES can have their say on the Abbotts Road level crossing removal project at an evening forum. The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LCRA) will host an event “for input into design options” following outcry over plans to close the road at the Cranbourne rail line. LCRA representatives will present “a detailed overview of all options under consideration” and facilitate discussion around each option. It has previously presented just one option - closing Abbotts Road and building an overpass connecting Remington Drive with Pound Road West. The industry forum will take place from 6.30pm to 8pm on Thursday 17 March. RSVP to contact@levelcrossings.vic.gov.au or call 1800 762 667 during business hours. LCRA will confirm the address upon RSVP.

All aboard for advice

Guest speakers Julie Busch and Jane Grover. 151403 Ms Busch said the market could harness the community’s expanding palate and growing interest in food experiences. She wants the market to be a meeting place. “No shopping centre or department store can meet what Dandenong Market can offer,” she said. “It needs to be known as the place to go.” Ms Busch spoke about the need to balance tradition with the community’s current needs, giving expanding the market’s three trading days to include Sundays as an example. “Sunday trading is growing significantly and is one of the best trading days

of the week,” she said. She said the market was Australia’s second oldest, one year behind Prahran, and its 150th birthday celebrations in September and October would include a 20-metre photographic mural, a sculpture and a coffee table book featuring stories and photos from shoppers. “It’s not something you reinvent, it’s something you nurture,” she said. Ms Grover said SMCT was working to demystify cemeteries and reflect everchanging communities. “I hope you are surprised by what you see today,” she said. “If you look at the surroundings you’re in, you could be anywhere.” Springvale Botanical Cemetery now

hosts sold-out Sunday Jazz sessions. “Nobody else is doing this in Australia. In fact, nobody else is doing this in the (United) States.” SMCT also manages Bunurong Memorial Park in Dandenong South, where Premier Daniel Andrews will officially open new facilities on Sunday 17 April. Ms Grover explained that every dollar the trust brought in went back into running its eight sites, including three older cemeteries that no longer generated income. “We have to maintain them,” she said. “We’re about service. We’re about looking after the community.”

Pyne and Kroger share a genuine chemistry By CASEY NEILL A CHEMICAL manufacturer in Noble Park is bringing a new deal to innovation. Industry, Innovation and Science Minister Christopher Pyne and Liberal candidate for Bruce Helen Kroger visited Boron Molecular on Wednesday 9 March. Boron Molecular managing director Zoran Manev led a facility tour. “I think there was a genuine interest once they saw what we did, how we do it,” he said. “We spoke of the master agreement that we had signed with the CSIRO and how it’s novel and it’s a new approach to establishing relationships between CSIRO and industry. “We then spoke of further models for further engagement, how we could be of mutual benefit to each other. “The minister was very supportive, I felt.” He said the CSIRO was working on more technology that Boron could commercialise for use. “Rather than doing a peace deal for every project, we worked on an all-encompassing master agreement,” he said. “That gives us the freedom to look at any technology that’s out of the CSIRO. “You don’t have to go through all the negotiation, the paperwork. “It streamlines the process of taking

Crossing call for comment

the technology and commercialising it.” They signed the deal last November following almost a year of work. It also allows for Mr Manev to bring focused inquiries from customers to the CSIRO. “I write a business case and CSIRO assists with developing the chemistry so I can manufacture the product,” he said. “I’m almost like a scout. “The master agreement has a royalty payment to the CSIRO. “They help me develop the chemistry, I get sales, their royalty goes up.” He’s hoping to expand the relationship to fund Boron’s growth. “We need capital, we need resources,” he said. “Possibly a logical step would be for the CSIRO to take an equity position in Boron so it, too, could benefit from the growth that we’re experiencing. “There’s a lot of companies that the CSIRO has had a stake in, and holds a stake in. “It’s not new, per se, but it’s still different ... it’s still a different model altogether.” Mr Manev said about 98 per cent of the company’s sales were export. “Typically our products will go into pharmaceuticals, material science and agricultural chemical,” he said. “We’re a low-volume, high-value model. We’re very much niche molecules.” Boron is currently “nicely tucked

He hopes to stay in Greater Dandenong. “That area suits us perfectly. The proximity of Monash University, the CSIRO,” he said. “Effectively it’s a hub of experience and knowledge. It’s where we draw our workforce from.”

HOME-BASED, micro and small businesses in Greater Dandenong can access a series of workshops and seminars. The council has formed a partnership with neighbouring Kingston City Council to present the sessions, which will run until October. Chase for more glory By JARROD POTTER BREAKING his league medal hoodoo - after consecutive runner-up finishes in the Victorian Premier Cricket’s Jack Ryder Medal Cranbourne’s Matt Chasemore earned the DDCA’s highest individual honour on Wednesday night. The Eagles’ all-rounder flew to the top of the Alan Wookey Medal table late in the 11-round vote-count at the Dandenong Club. After a slow start to the 2015-'16 Turf 1 season, Chasemore flew home; accumulating 428 runs and 16 wickets in his return to Cranbourne and club cricket for the first time in 17 years. He racked up the votes on the way to 32 for the night, claiming three maximum votegetting performances against Narre Warren (Round 5) Buckley Ridges (Round 9) and Dandenong West (Round 11), to earn his first Wookey Medal. Berwick skipper Jarrod Goode (29 votes) flew in under the radar and almost pinched the medal from Chasemore, taking the lead in the final round after a five-wicket haul against Lyndale. But Chasemore regained his mantle soon after - taking the maximum from a swashbuckling 75 against Dandenong West in the season finale. “I just tried to put myself in the game - whether its bat or ball - try to execute the skill and I’ve been fortunate this year,” Chasemore said. “It’s good - a little bit embarrassing as you would think the players that get recruited straight out of grade cricket should win them. “But it’s great to be back in the DDCA and hopefully I can forge a little career in the next 10 years and see what I can make of it.”

It was an exercise in slowing down on and off the field for Chasemore, after a duck and a three to start off his campaign, as he needed readjust his line-and-length and mindset to combat the local standard. But he found his rhythm and was trading blows with the opposition after that to help Cranbourne finish second in the competition. Much of Cranbourne’s success boiled down to Chasemore and team-mate, also four-time Wookey Medalist, Steve Spoljaric (27), who traded blows throughout the count but in the end Spolly fell just short of another addition to his already extraordinary trophy cabinet. It was a complete night for the Casey clubs as Berwick’s Ryan Crawford (26), Heinz Southern Districts Michael Davies (22) and Narre Warren’s Kaushalya Weeraratne (22) rounded out the top five. At the halfway mark Buckley Ridges’ import Susantha Pradeep (17 votes) had taken the lead, but couldn’t match the start to his inaugural DDCA season, while Malinga Bandara (18) was the highest placed of the Dandenong-area players. Chasemore featured in Saturday’s DDCA Turf 1 grand final against Springvale South and for more on the result, click onto the Dandenong Journal website www.dandenong.starcommunity.com.au for the completed results. The cruelest cut’s cruel margin By JARROD POTTER WOMEN’S VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 20 ONE run. The cruel nature of cricket reared its head last Sunday as the Dandenong Lions Women’s Cricket Club (189) fell in its pursuit of finals by a solitary score against Box Hill (9/189). A resurgent end to the season - taking two massive wins leading up to the match - gave the Lions the must-win opportunity against the fourth placed Mustangs to sneak into the Premier Cricket semi-finals. Chelsea Moscript (4/34) excelled with the ball, rattling off the Mustangs' top order to keep the chase below 200. It was going to plan as well, as the opening partnership from Sarah Elliott (33) and Erica Kershaw (27) saw off the shine. Their knock was followed up by the skipper Kelly Applebee (49) and Moscript (46) and the Lions looked likely to canter home at 2/173 with nine overs left. Applebee and Moscript fell quickly and from there Dandenong’s order spun out of control against Bella Gietzmann (4/21) and Cass Brock (4/46). They put Dandenong on the back foot and then some, taking a bag of wickets for a pittance as Dandenong, with only three runs to get, lost 6/2 in a disastrous collapse. With scores level after Shiromi Wijeratne’s (0) dismissal, the sides split the points to give Box Hill the ticket to the finals. “We set ourselves up into a really good position - I don’t know if you can explain what happened ... it was a little bit like a train wreck,” Applebee said. “It’s difficult to assess a season on the last game but it’s an extremely disappointing result.

Search for new Dandy coach By JARROD POTTER

Chelsea Moscript had a sublime end to the Premier season with 4/34 and 46 in the draw Picture: JARROD POTTER against Box Hill. 133585 “To get so close and in an interesting game we had a lot of ups and downs and didn’t play our best cricket ... there were some good periods of the game and put ourselves in a winning position but cricket’s a funny game isn’t it?” Applebee was impressed with the way the Lions persevered through a tough season, with Women’s Big Bash and other competitions leaving the side decimated at times. If the side can stick together for the next few seasons, the skipper has no doubt Dandenong will feature prominently in the Premier Cricket finals. “I was really proud of the girls to get to that point but extremely disappointed for the club not

to be playing finals this weekend,” Applebee said. “The thing I said to the girls afterwards was we needed to win the last three games to make finals and needed to get a bonus point in one of those last three and we put ourselves in a position to do that. “I definitely think we’ve got the team that not only could make finals, but definitely win it as well. “If we can keep this group together for the next four or five years, I have no doubt we’ll be involved in finals and winning premierships which is what we want to achieve.”

DANDENONG Cricket Club is on the hunt for a new coach, after Ross Woodall handed in his resignation. After two seasons at the helm, Woodall decided he needed to spend more time with family and work. “He told us he didn’t want to go on next year because of family and work commitments,” Dandenong CC president Michael Findlay said. “He wanted to spend more time with the family and watch his kids playing sport and the things they do as he thought he’d missed out over the years.” The club praised Woodall’s commitment to cultivating the juniors and promoting the club’s depth to the higher ranks. While first XI finals didn’t eventuate, the Panthers praised Woodall’s efforts to leave the club in a strong position for the years ahead. “Ross has been fantastic with us - he’s put a lot of time into trying to bring on the younger people in the club,” Findlay said. “Been very passionate in the club and spent time with the junior development area, over and above what we wanted from him. “We haven’t made the finals in the ones, but we’ve had good success in the other grades in finals achievements and had quite a number of players come through the under-17 and under-19s pathways as well.” Further information may be obtained from Michael Findlay on 0438 340 595 or from Gary Davidson on 0411 591 485. The successful applicant will possess at least a level two certificate or be willing to obtain one promptly. Applications will close 1 April 2016. Dandenong’s season came to an end last week in its victory over Greenvale Kangaroos.

Vandort vital for Bloods By JARROD POTTER DDCA - GRAND FINALS (Saturday Results) A MATCH for the ages, the only true way to finish a cricket season, is on the cards as Springvale South (138) and Cranbourne (5/23) remain locked in a Turf 1 thriller. TURF 1 Just when you think grand finals can’t get more exciting, Springvale South and Cranbourne upped the intensity for the final salvo of 2015/16. It started horrendously for the minor premiers, losing Nathan King (8), Harry Staude (0) and Dylan Quirk (12) for next-to-nothing. Martin Kelly (3/24) and Steve Spoljaric (2/30) chipped away at the top order before the introduction of Wookey Medallist Matt Chasemore (2/29) added more pain to the Bloods’ innings. Craig Slocombe (21) went from belting the stuffing out of the attack, to succumbing to Chasemore after a quick-fire knock left the side spinning at 4/71. The initiative was left to Sri Lankan import Michael Vandort (58), who braced himself and held on. In the end the Bloods managed to work their way into the clash through a remarkable lower order partnership. Mitchell Forsyth (16) played out of his skin to hold on with Vandort as the duo added 26 for the seventh stand. Vandort raised the bat for his 50, but soon fell to young leggie Cam Dinger (3/24) after an impressive 176-ball occupation of the crease. Forsyth carried on with the tail to add the final few drips to the Bloods’ bank of runs. The fading light further renewed Springvale South’s hopes as the openers went on the warpath. Jarrod Armitage (3/9) was beyond sensational in his first-up eight over spell - cannoning through Brayden Roscoe (1) before finding the edges of Jake Harrington (6) and Chasemore (1). Lucas Ligt (4) set himself to see out the remaining overs and held on throughout the chaos unleashed by Armitage, Tim Ford (1/4) and Nathan King (0/6)... but Craig Slocombe saved his ace for the last over of the day, bringing on his young part-timer Brayden Sharp (1/0). Sharp managed to flight a left-arm miracle, taking arguably the biggest wicket of his career to get rid of the dogged Ligt, caught brilliantly by King. It left Spoljaric (4no) and Stuart Plunkett (0no) to see out the day and set themselves for the massive task ahead. With only Jordan Cleland as a recognised batsman to come, plus the three tail-enders, the heavy lifting has to come from the experienced tandem if Cranbourne wants to take the flag. TURF 2 After narrowly avoiding the noose last weekend, Keysborough (116) put its neck back in the

Springvale South opener Michael Vandort held together the innings with a gutsy halfPicture: JARROD POTTER century in the Turf 1 grand final against Cranbourne. 151508 hangman’s way as it was rolled quickly by Dingley (5/98). The top order imploded against Dingley’s new ball specialist Andrew Dalby (4/30). Searing through the top four for a pittance, Dalby pushed his season tally to 30 wickets and put the minor premiers right on the back foot. The only tandem to show great resistance was Shakeel Ahmad (48) and Yoshan Kumara (19). The duo worked their way towards tea in a steady partnership for the fifth wicket. Ahmad - the only Knight to really fight back against the Dingoes - was en route to his halfcentury and beyond before an unbelievable passage sent him back to the Hallam sheds. For reasons that will have to be explained in fine detail, Kumara pulled off the ultimate, and potentially match-losing, brain-fade to run out Ahmad. Bunting a shot directly to the field, Kumara set off and left Ahmad to head back as he was barely half-way down the pitch when the bails were whipped off. Dingley celebrated the must-take wicket and soon had the pair as Kumara’s stand ended as he edged one to the cordon a few balls later. The tail had little wag, but managed to push past triple figures and stay in the hunt ... at least

for the time being. Dingley’s stop-start chase - hampered by the thunderbolts Kumara (3/27) was flinging at their heads - got most of the way to victory after captain Travis Sawers (26) saw the shine off the new rock alongside Christo Otto (18). Scott Tutton (25no) and Liam Leeson (9no) were set at stumps and the Dingoes sit 19 runs off promotion to the top grade, barring another fit of reverse-outright shenanigans from the Knights. TURF 3 Escaping early disaster against Beaconsfield (1/31), Buckley Ridges managed to pile on the pain late in the day at Reedy Reserve. The start was disastrous as the Tigers ripped shreds from the Ridges’ order. At 6/69 - following another barrage from Beaconsfield skipper Dylan Freitag (4/47) - Buckley would’ve been pleased with triple figures, let alone the tally it has forced upon the minor premiers. Shane D’Rozario (74) turned back the clock and ground down the Tigers’ bowlers. The dual Wookey Medallist was seemingly planted in the crease as nothing fazed him en route to another half-century. He united with his son Jonathan D’Rozario

(11no) to pile on a 50-run stand and give the Ridges’ something tangible to defend. Mario Perera (20no) saw out the last 10 overs, but not before losing opening partner Heshal Silva (4). TURF 4 TO TURF 7 Springvale’s (139 and 3/78) middling Turf 4 target proved too much for Lynbrook (63) on a wicket-laden day. Thilanka Harsha (35) went the smack against the Lightning, but couldn’t hold on for long against the likes of Stephen Veal (4/22) and Jesse Walia (3/29). From 3/91 the wheels completely fell off as Springvale collapsed to finish at 139 after 41 overs. Springvale turned its woes onto Lynbrook as Lois Twohig Reserve bore witness to more carnage. Sachintha Rajapakse (3/12) and Mark Weeding (3/21) tore through Lynbrook’s attack, setting the stage for a second bat late on day one after Springvale won the first innings emphatically. Harsha (47no) remained unbeaten at the end of the day. Akaati Pupuke (116) led his Berwick Springs (9/330) Turf 5 side to a virtually unassailable position against Buckley Ridges. Cashing his first century on the biggest day of his cricket career, Pupuke paired off with Mitchell Mason (37) and skipper Jeromy Cooray (42) to punish anything Buckley Ridges could throw at him. Like the Titans of mythology Pupuke razed his opponents at Carroll Reserve and left a Titan-ic headache for the chasers. Farhan Hussain (2/77) toiled all day for his side. Narre North (177) took Beaconsfield’s (0/16) bowling to task in Turf 6, setting the stage for a big chase for the Tigers’ second XI. Samuel McDavitt (3/26) was Beaconsfield’s best with the ball while Martin Oke (2/31), Lachlan Laird (2/34) and James McLean (2/35) charged in all day. Berwick Springs (91) is locked into a frenetic Turf 7 finish against Cranbourne (6/46) as neither side managed to dominate the bowling. Michael Randall (3/28) and Jason Quigley (3/3) rattled through the Titans’ top order - with the only knock of note coming from skipper Ravin Punchihewa (38). The Eagles’ response was even worse though. Hayden Johnson (3/19) continued his all-year round sporting form with a sharp first up spell before Jason Miseski (2/17) knocked over a couple more Eagles before stumps. Lions roar past White Eagles By JARROD POTTER NPL VICTORIA 2 EAST - ROUND 4 DOWNED at the final whistle, Springvale White Eagles fell 1-0 to Eastern Lions in a hardfought match from the get-go. Neither side could capitalise on their opportunities early at the Serbian Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon, as White Eagles keeper Lajos Hun in particular had plenty to do to keep the Lions off the scoreboard. In a fascinating battle at the back, Lions’ striker Phillip Ajao and Springvale’s Jordan Ballerini wore each other like gloves. Ajao was lucky to escape a red-card late in the first half, after an clumsy kick, going for an aerial ball, smashed Ballerini in the face and resulted in only a yellow. The sides went into the half goalless and that’s how it remained for most of the outing, but the White Eagles will kick themselves for letting Sam Burfoot (88’) get free in the dying stages. Inside the box, Burfoot dribbled it in the air to himself before chipping it over Hun to steal the victory. Dandenong Thunder continued its rampage through NPL 2 East with a 3-1 away victory over Box Hill United. Filling his coffers yet again, Amir Osmancevic (16’ and 65’) scored his fourth consecutive brace while Simon Colosimo (28’) hit the back of the net for his maiden Thunder goal. Brunswick City defeated Dandenong City 2-1 after goals from Adam Wright and Dimiti Vithoulkas, despite a 59th minute goal cutting the

margin in half. Thunder sits atop the table with a whopping plus-13 goal difference after only four clashes, while Dandenong City is sixth and Springvale White Eagles sit in eighth. The NPL goes on hiatus for a week as the NPL teams enter the FFA Cup qualifying rounds - the draw for the round 4 clashes will be held on Tuesday. Following the cup clashes, Springvale will host Whittlesea Ranges, Dandenong Thunder will bring Sunshine George Cross down to George Andrews Reserve while Dandenong City will travel again this time to Werribee City. In FFA Cup results, Round 3 of the Victorian Qualifiers was led by an impressive away victory from Doveton SC, smashing Myrtleford Savoy 3-0 - all the more clinical following a three-anda-half hour drive to get to Savoy Park. Casey Comets had to hold on against Warragul United, turning a 2-2 regulation finish into a 4-2 trouncing by the end of over-time while Langwarrin SC knocked over Berwick City 4-2. Keysborough SC faced Northern Falcons on Sunday afternoon after the Journal went to print, while Endeavour Hills Fire will clash with Elwood City on Monday night and South Springvale commences its cup campaign with a Tuesday night battle against Moreland United at Warner Reserve. In WNPL, Southern United faced FC Bulleen Lions in its first home clash on Sunday afternoon after the Journal went to print.

Dandy pulls no punches By JARROD POTTER YOUTH GIRLS CHALLENGE - ROUND 3 RAMPING up the scoreline heading into the Youth Girls Challenge finals, Dandenong pulled no punches in a physical, skilful demolition of the depleted Gippsland Power. It was a day where the score says it all - Dandenong piled on the pain with a 17.8 (110) to nil rampage across Garfield Reserve. The Power was forced to rest a few high calibre faces, leaving the home side with little recourse against the might across all Stingrays lines. A five-goal opening term bettered most other matches for Dandenong’s output so far and it only got better from there as the link-up play through-

out the roster excelled. Dandenong bruised the Gippsland initiative at all lines with Georgia Walker, Jordy Allen and Georgia Gee all creating rebounds across halfback. A hot day didn’t cool the Stingrays’ forward surge either as Kayla Ripari (four goals), Beth Cruickshank, Sam Ryan and debuting Beaconsfield midfielder Tyla Hanks (three apiece) had free reign up front. While the scoreline was lopsided, Dandenong coach Scott Gowans was more impressed with the side’s work-rate and disposal - aspects that can only help them further coming into the semifinals. “It’s a good day’s work - part of the plan after the Sandy game was to fix our ball movement,” Gowans said. “Credit to the girls, they really worked hard at training at it and the last three weeks have been terrific with the ball movement.

“Structure, process - they sound boring but it bloody works - it’s just the way footy is and the better they do it the more the results will come.” Gowans praised the likes of Dayna Smith, Courtney Jones, Sarah Farmer and Chloe Stephens for their attack on the ball - showing that it’s not just the top-end of the list that’s flourishing in the Stingrays’ strip. Dandenong has qualified for a top half semifinal, facing the Northern Conference’s number one seed Calder at Arden Street, from 2pm on 19 March, and the week off is a blessing for Dandenong heading into the maiden finals series for the newly formed competition. “We’ve got no serious injuries, besides Tay O’Hagan, but we’ve got a few girls who are just a bit sore,” Gowans said. “They’ve gone back to local footy, have state training and the whole thing - so a week off is huge.” YOUTH GIRLS CHALLENGE DANDENONG STINGRAYS 5.5 GIPPSLAND POWER 0.0

Kyana throws some gold around By JARROD POTTER DO NOT let her small stature fool you, Hampton Park Little Athletics star Kyana Gordon is full of track and especially field - talent. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Kyana, 8, from Hampton Park, has earned a place in the Little Athletics State Track and Field Championships after an impressive regionals campaign. Throwing her way into the state finals, the Hampton Park Little Athletics Club member threw 17.98m in the Under 9 girls discus to win the gold medal and also had a great finish in the shot put. Her 4.98m throw gave Kyana second place in the shot put to cap off a strong regional showing. Her mum Narelle was an exceptional athlete in her own right and the genes for success have been

passed down to Kyana - who is ready and raring to compete at the next level. “It was exciting 'cause my mum was excited for me, so it would be a huge opportunity 'cause my mum made it to states too,” Kyana said. “She was a sprinter and a hurdler, but I like probably discus and shot put - 'cause I just love throwing things.” She’s been into Little Athletics for the last two years and as well as the love of a great throw, she also likes meeting new people and making heaps of friends at the events. Kyana’s goals for the state titles are simple - she wants to throw more than 20 metres in the discus and jump over seven metres in the triple-jump. Her love of sport has served her well at the Dandenong Little Athletics Centre and she will represent the

Midnight dog turns out to be dark horse By MICHAEL FLOYD PAGAN Midnight upstaged some of the best young greyhounds in the country to set the time standard in the Launching Pad heats at Sandown Park tonight. At 39 months of age Pagan Midnight was the second oldest of the 85 greyhounds to greet the starter for the $450,000 series. Given little chance by punters, Pagan Midnight ($20.60) jumped flawlessly from box four to bound to the lead and

hold odds-on favourite Demon Bale at bay to score by a length in 29.48 - two lengths faster than any other heat. With Robert Britton, Pagan Midnight has strung together six starts in six weeks and is on track to add to his five career wins. Pagan Midnight completed a double for Britton after Reichenbach claimed the night’s opening heat in 29.71. Angela Langton also claimed a winning double, claiming the final

two heats with Edge Of Eden and Dream Edition. Angela’s partner Jeff Britton will also be represented by two runners in the semi-finals with Gee Joon and One For Me also progressing after running second in their heats. Arguably the two strongest kennels in the country, Andrea Dailly and Jason Thompson, also won heats with Fantastic Roxy and Aeroplane Bob respectively. The group two Launching Pad is the country’s only sweepstakes

event. The series is open to greyhounds with 1-6 wins and no more than 30 starts, and connections must pay a $2000 entry fee to secure a spot in the series. The winner and runner-up of each heat, as well as the 10 fastest third place getters progress through to next Thursday’s semi-finals with the winner and runner-up of each progressing to the $220,000 group 2 Launching Pad final on Thursday 24 March.

MOTORING New A4 worth the wait By PETER ANDERSON AUDI’S A4 has just entered its fourth generation but if you poke around you’ll see that it’s known as the B9 - the ninth-generation of the four rings’ B-segment offering, stretching back to the early 1970s starting with the first Audi 80, sold here as the Fox. much to its understated good looks and value proposition, helping Audi to a record year in 2015. But underneath it was getting on a bit and the cabin was lacking many of the toys of not only other Audis but - crucially - its competitors. The B9 is also spun off the VW Group’s MLB Evo platform which has already produced the acclaimed second generation Q7. The new range debuts with three petrol engines - a 1.4-litre and two 2.0-litres - and a sole 2.0-litre turbodiesel. The 1.4 is included in the Australian A4 range for the first time. There’s also a huge list of new goodies to part you and your cash. Pricing starts at $55,500 for the 110kW/250Nm 1.4 litre TFSI front-wheel drive. The first of the 2.0 litre petrols is front-wheel drive as well and produces 140kW and 320Nm and kicks off at $60,900. The 140kW/400Nm 2.0 TDI is Quattroonly for $66,900 and the second 2.0 petrol, the Quattro 185kW, is $69,990. The new entry level 1.4 is $1500 cheaper than the outgoing entry level 1.8. Audi says the equipment level is higher to offset the performance penalty. The old A4 range had a big gap to the 2.0 TFSI Quattro which is now filled by the 2.0 front-wheel drive model. The two Quattro models (Audi expects the petrol Quattro to be the big seller) are both slightly more than their predecessors, but have a lot more gear as standard, most obviously safety-related. There wasn’t any pricing available for the wagon Avant, which is expected here before the middle of the year. All A4s feature adaptive LED headlights, 8.3-inch MMI screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, sport front seats, partial leather trim, Audi Connect internet functionality (requires a

The new 2.0 TFSI front-drive adds DAB+, hands-free boot opening and electric passenger seat. The TDI and TFSI Quattro Sports are identically-specced, with 19-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, upgraded sound system, memory driver’s seat and folding/heated exterior mirrors. There are tons of options from which to choose, but as ever, Audi helpfully groups them together into packages. The $1900 Assistance Package adds Active Lane Assist, adaptive cruise

control with stop and go and traffic jam assistant, distance indicator and pre-sense front (helps you to avoid having a crash and prepares the car for one if it’s inevitable), turn assist (tries to stop you turning in front of oncoming traffic), collision avoidance and high beam assist. The Technik Package adds Audi’s sensational virtual cockpit and heads-up display. The Virtual Cockpit is lifted from the TT and Q7, a 12.3-inch fully digital display run by a powerful NVIDIA graphics card. Subaru renews the fleet By MURRAY HUBBARD TAKEN in isolation the year 2015 is one where it’s easy to ponder that Subaru Australia was the mouse that roared. The fact is Subaru has been growling for 16 years out of the past 18 years - that’s how many years it has increased volume sales. The two years it failed to exceed the previous year were due to factors outside their control namely the GFC and the Japanese tsunami. In 2015, Subaru models Outback SUV and Liberty sedan roared up the sales charts after all-new models were released in January. With sales of 10,927 Outback boasted a 344 per cent increase. Liberty found the mark with 4097 sales - up 293 per cent over the previous year in about the toughest segment going - large cars, that includes local favourites Commodore and Falcon. While the Australian car market grew by 3.8 per cent in 2015, Subaru grew by double that amount at 7.6 per cent. Worldwide in 2015 Subaru sold more cars than it could produce, building 978,000 vehicles and this year is hoping to crack the million-mark. Subaru is a smallish division of the large Japanese corporation, Fuji Heavy Industries, and does battle mainly with Japanese heavyweight competitors such as Toyota, Nissan, Mazda and Mitsubishi. However Subaru differs from the rest by offering all-wheel-drive vehicles across the range - apart from the BRZ sports car - and in the past couple of years has led the way with safety technology that complements the AWD safety and torque vectoring sys-

tems in use in many models. However, it’s the EyeSight that is starting to drive Subaru sales. It’s a driver assist technology that greatly reduces the chance of having a nose to tail collision - one of the most common road crashes. Subaru has just launched upgrades to three key models: Outback, Liberty and Forester. When the new model Outback was released in January last year Subaru was unable to offer EyeSight on diesel models. This upgrade sees that rectified in all automatic versions and will be a stimulus for further growth in Outback sales with the diesel variants attracting rural buyers. EyeSight uses cameras to detect potential collisions - and now detects and reads brake lights on cars in front - and if you don’t look like braking, EyeSight will intervene and do it for you. And, if you don’t brake hard enough, it will again intervene and use the hard braking via brake assist. At the launch of the updated models, Subaru Australia managing direc-

tor Nick Senior said statistics were starting to emerge that revealed the real value of EyeSight. He said an Adelaide fleet operator with 565 vehicles, including 125 Subarus, of which 51 are fitted with EyeSight, recorded 358 incidents with damage since January 1, 2014. Of those 113 involved from end impacts to the bumper, crashes and wildlife strikes. Only one involved a Subaru with EyeSight and that occurred when the vehicle turned a corner and collided with a car that would have not been picked up by EyeSight. In addition to EyeSight Outback also gained Vision Assist technology on three top of the line models with the technology including blind spot monitoring, lane change assist, auto dimming rear view mirror, high beam assist and rear cross traffic alert that detects passing vehicles when reversing. Subaru also added the Vision Assist package to premium variants of the Liberty range, Liberty 2.5i and 3.6R. All Liberty models now also have Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), where
