Crime jumped 12.7 per cent across Geelong and 9.1 per cent in Surf Coast, latest Crime Statistics Agency figures reveal. Golden Plains had the region’s highest rise, 18.6 per cent, while Queenscliff was up 11.8 per cent. All four local government areas recorded increases in crime above state averages. The number of offences across Geelong increased from 18,769 in 2014 to 21,158 in 2015 for an offence

rate of 9304.7 per 100,000 residents. Offences in Surf Coast were up from 1373 in 2014 to 1498 in 2015, an offence rate of 5121 per 100,000. Golden Plains crime was up from 505 to 599 and Queenscliff from 101 to 113. The state-wide increase was 8.1 per cent. As for suburbs and towns, Geelong West recorded a 119.4 per cent rise in crime, Barwon Heads was up 31.4 per cent and Ocean Grove rose 19.8 per cent. The main crime categories on

the rise included possession and use of illegal weapons, drug dealing and trafficking, theft and family violence. Premier Daniel Andrews chose the day the figures were released to visit the Victoria Police Academy to congratulate 21 graduation police and 19 Protective Services Officers. Mr Andrews said his Labor Government had funded nearly 700 extra “police personnel” from $2.5 billion in funding for Victoria Police. “This includes $148.6 million to recruit, train and deploy 400 custo-

dy officers in 22 police stations over the next three years,” he said. But Liberal Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos said the new crime statistics contained more bad news for the region. “The Labor Government has been in charge for the entire year of these new figures so there can no longer be any finger pointing,” he said. “We have increased thefts and burglaries, car thefts and a significant rise in drug crime. Wards ‘bound for failure’

NEWS

In Brief Savage ‘shootout’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Multi-councillor wards recommended for Geelong would be an “abject failure”, according to a former mayor. Barbara Abley, mayor from 2002 to 2004, accused the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) of “fiddling with boundaries” in its recommedation to the State Government. The VEC final report recommended Geelong switch from 12 wards with a councillor each to three wards with three councillors and one ward with two. A 1993 law requires a reduction in Geelong councillors from 13, including the mayor, to a dozen, meaning one ward councillor must go. Ms Abley said councillors from around Victoria with experience of multi-member wards had told her the system was “an abject failure“.

“Constituents feel short-changed because they believe the larger, redesigned wards do not adequately take into account naturally aligned communities, nor are the decreased numbers of assigned councillors able to represent the ward ratepayers without compromise.” Ms Abley said Geelong’s council had undergone numerous VEC reviews, none of which substantially achieved its desired outcome. “The proposed recommended changes to the ward boundaries clearly do not take into account the diversity of this very large local government area. “Elected representation should be increased in line with the growing population and increased statutory responsibilities of councillors, not decreased. Geelong already had far fewer councillors per capita than the national average, Ms Abley said.

“Conversely, Geelong appears to be over-governed by a large number of state representatives, both lower and upper house. Perhaps it’s time for a serious discussion regarding the abolition of the second tier of government.“ State MP for South Barwon and former Geelong councillor Andrew Katos questioned whether the VEC recommendation aligned with a state review of the city’s process for directly electing its mayor. “The ward review goes hand-in-hand with the way the mayor is elected. There’s no point in changing the way the mayor is elected unless the ward system is in line with that,“ Mr Katos said. “It should have been done together instead of having two reviews running in separate directions.”

A man charged after allegedly being involved in a wild car chase and shootout in northern Geelong has appeared in court. Selwyn Savage, 36, of Norlane, was remanded in custody to return to court in June on firearms and other charges related to the incident, which allegedly also involved his brother and two other men.

Cars burnt Two cars have been set alight at Corio and a third at Ocean Grove in a single night. Police said one of the Corio vehicles and the Ocean Grove car were burnt on residential properties in the early hours of Thursday morning, while a van was found gutted on a dirt road off Shell Parade about 7am.

Footpaths charge A “special charge” will levy property owners $2612 each on average to build new footpaths along Highton’s Roslyn Road and Grovedale’s Pioneer Road, according to City Hall. The city will cover 68 per cent of the cost of both projects, with the affected ratepayers to contribute their share over five years.

Sunday fest A free community arts festival will return to Geelong West this Sunday, organisers have announced. They said WestFEST 2016 would feature “something for everyone” from 1pm to 6pm in West Park.

Brickie wins A Lara brickie has won a Master Builders Apprentice of the Year award for the Geelong region. Steed Goldburg won the prize on Wednesday night, with Geelong’s Toby Sudweeks named Employer-Nominated winner and Corio’s Nyunt Oo taking home a chairman’s award. Teens arrested

‘Different’ foster care helps beat disabled stresses By ALANA MITCHELSON A Victorian-first foster care-like system for disabled children has alleviated strain on Geelong families. Private Respite Services (PRS) is approaching its first anniversary of providing individualised, one-on-one service to care for disabled children within their family homes for a day, overnight or weekends. Dianne Welding established the service after noticing “a gap in the system from a carer’s perspective“. “Often the reason children are in care is due to

0405-572-182

a burn-out on the parents’ part or the carer. Our system keeps kids at home rather than being sent off for long-term care,“ Ms Welding said. “It was two years in the making but we are NDIS and DHS-registered and we’ve now helped 32 kids in the past year.“ Lara mother of five Kylie Whitfield said she had noticed behavioural improments in her autistic 12-year-old son, Noah Hunter, since he began using PRS six months ago. “He can be very violent and it can be very demanding but he counts the days until he stays over at his carer Jesse’s house,“ she said. “Jesse also helps him get ready for school each day and does outdoor exercise activities in the af-

ternoon to wear his energy levels out so he calms down after school before coming home. “It gives me time to cook dinner and help my teenage children with their homework. And once a fortnight I’m able to catch up on sleep and get some washing done.“ Respite worker, Jesse Hill, said the one-on-one care had been crucial to Noah’s progress. “He’s picking up so many skills like making his bed in the mornings, getting dressed by himself and preparing his clothes before taking a shower. “He’s really opened up with my partner and my best friend who live with me as well - it’s like he becomes part of the family.“

Councillor workshops Geelong’s councillors have sat through workshops to develop a councillor code of conduct. Susan Halliday, who wrote a report on council’s “culture” following bullying allegations, and a local government lawyer conducted the workshops, City Hall said.

Rail to split historic farm

Second man’s hit-run charge

By ALANA MITCHELSON A Mt Duneed farmer is fighting state plans to bisect his historic property for a train yard. The project will separate Stanley Larcombe’s paddocks for 5000 sheep from his shearing shed and holding yards. A Freedom of Information document reveals that State Government signed off on a compulsory acquisition for 35 hectares of the farm in July, but Mr Larcome says he was not informed until August. The State Government wants the 1.9km long, 200m widestrip of land, south of the GeelongWarrnambool rail line, to store and maintain up to 24 eight-carriage trains. Mr Larcombe and brother Gordon’s 455ha property, Cromer, has been in the family for over 100 years after early settler James Henty founded it in 1855. “To replace all of our sheds and relocate equipment is going to cost a fortune, not to mention it will isolate our home and it will be inefficient to be constantly driving back and forth,” Mr Larcombe said. The acquistion would also wipe out a crossing between paddocks, which his sheep used up to 10 times a day. “We were told we’d have to truck our livestock - they’ve got no idea,” Mr Larcombe said. Mr Larcombe said goverment officials initially led him to believe he could refuse the acquisition. “They said that if we weren’t interested, they’d walk away. That was their exact words over the phone.“ The officials also indicated the Larcombes would be compensated but gave no specific figures, Mr Larcombe said. The family was told re-zoning could take up to 18 months. “In that time, there is a cloud hanging over our heads,” Mr Larcombe’s daughter, Lisa, said. “We can’t make plans for the future of the farm because we don’t know where we stand.” Locally Owned and Operated

A second man has been charged over an alleged hit-run collision that killed a 77-yearold cyclist at Anakie last Mother’s Day. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives charged Jeremy Robertson, 21, of Lovely Banks on Wednesday in relation to the death of Corio’s Gordon Ibbs on 10 May. Robertson appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday afternoon on a charge of being an accessory after the fact in relation to Mr Ibbs’s death. He was bailed to reappear in court at a later date. Mr Ibbs was on a Sunday afternoon bike ride when a sedan allegedly hit him from behind on Geelong-Ballan Road. Police have alleged the maroon VT Commodore failed to stop. The vehicle was later found burnt-out at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir. In late November detectives charged Bradley Azzopardi, 26, of Whittington with culpable driving, resisting arrest, driving while disqualified and other traffic-related offences in relation to Mr Ibbs’s death. ACQUIRED: Stanley Larcome in the shearing shed of his family’s historic property at Mt Duneed. Continued from front page Geelong’s affluent areas were becoming increasing targets for gangs breaking into houses, stealing cars, leaving people feeling unsafe in their own homes, Mr Katos said. “The police force attrition rate is at least 150 members every year, so only recruiting 21 officers is not good enough. Waurn Ponds police station should have 32 officers and its running on only 17 and Torquay is also well under what is required. “Daniel Andrews doesn’t care about law and order in this state.”

Double Take Geelong rail commuters might still be enduring chaotic services as trains undergo wheel replacements but at least one Victorian commuter is dealing with the situation in comfort. And who else should it be than the traveller accountable for the mess in the first place: Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan. Ms Allan revealed in parliament last week that she had spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on her own private ministerial waiting room at Bendigo railway station, 300 metres from her electoral office. At least now she “won’t have to mix with the people affected by her ineptitude“, observed Liberal MP David Hodgett. Which is probably just as well! A sombre crowd turned out for the public memorial of beloved Cats legend Paul Couch on Tuesday. Many a moist eye and quivering lip haunted Simonds Stadium as Geelong paid tribute to one of its favourite sons. The dearly departed still managed to stir the odd laugh, though, as mourners recounted

his good-natured humour, constant broad smile and general love of life, family and friends. Generosity, care and humility were other descriptors bandied about. Truly this was a man who generated goodwill with the same effortless verve as he disposed of the footy from the centre square in his heyday. Vale Couchy, one of Geelong’s truly good blokes. Double Take and associates enjoyed a rollicking time at Motor City Music Festival last Friday night. Blistering blues, rockin’ rollers and other acts of top standard vied for attention over three stages, along with some sizzlers in the VIP bar. Australia’s Got Talent grand finalist Sister’s Doll was a highlight but, in the crowd stakes, was pipped by a Geelong institution in Spandex and mascara. Yes, veteran local glam rock tribute band The Glitter Gang mustered an even larger audience than the Doll brothers, who played the set before on the same stage.

The state opposition is aiming to make cost of living pressures an election issue with its Costwatch campaign visiting the region this week. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos and Upper House MP Simon Ramsay were joined by Parliamentary Secretary Michael Gidley driving a signwritten truck to draw attention to the issue. Mr Katos said living costs were biting across the board. “It’s not just people in lower socio-economic areas that are hit by higher costs of living,” Mr Katos said. “It’s an important issue and one where we need

to listen to people. “The response so far has been that people are keen to share their issues with rising costs of living. “We are hearing stories of people suffering through no fault of their own and being caught by red tape or falling between the cracks.” Mr Gidley said there were different issues for different sectors such as retires, couples, families and single people. He said education, utilities and health costs were all running ahead of CPI and were adding to household bills. “Costs rise while income stagnates,” he said. The campaign has established website costwatch.com.au where people can leave feedback.

Loaded guns, drugs found in raid Police have raided seven properties around Geelong and Werribee linked to the Bandidos outlaw motorcycle gang. The raids targeted members of the gang’s Geelong chapter, police said. Detective Inspector Marty O’Brien said police made seven arrests and charged five people with various offences. One of the men arrested was a high-ranking Bandido and another was formerly a senior member of the gang, Det Insp O’Brien said. The accused are: · a 26-year-old Lovely Banks man charged with

trafficking a drug of dependence and possessing proceeds of crime. He was bailed to Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 7 June. · a 24-year-old Geelong man charged with trafficking commercial quantity of drugs. He was remanded until a hearing at Geelong on 24 June. · a 29-year-old Lara man charged with trafficking a drug of dependence, possessing a firearm, handling stolen goods, possessing ammunition and possessing proceeds of crime. He was remanded to face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday. · a 53-year-old Lavers Hill woman charged with

cultivating and possessing cannabis and was bailed to Colac Magistrates’ Court on 14 June. · a 21-year-old Newcomb man charged with possessing a prohibited weapon. Det Insp O’Brien said Task Force Echo detectives and regional counterparts seized four firearms, including two loaded handguns in the garage of a house with young children inside. The seizure was “of particular concern” to police, he said. “It’s an absolute hazard in any premises, let alone where young children are around. “Clearly of concern to us is that those hand-

guns are there for anybody to use.” Det Insp O’Brien said the Wednesday morning raids were part of an extensive six month investigation into alleged drug trafficking by people connected to the gang. Drugs, cash and a silencer for a weapon were also seized, he said. “We’re committed to breaking down these outlaw motorcycle groups. “This is a substantial move toward that direction but clearly there’s a lot more work to be done.”

Solemn stadium bids farewell to our footy legend

LOSS: Former team mate Billy Brownless and other mourners in the stands at the service.

MOURNERS: Solemn expressions in the crowd to farewell Paul Couch.

Hundreds of family, friends and fans have farewelled Cats legend Paul Couch at a public memorial in Geelong’s Simonds Stadium. Past-teammates from the ’80s and ’90s were prominent among mourners for the popular 1989 Brownlow medallist who played 259 games for Geelong. The service began on Tuesday at 2.10pm - a traditional starting time for afternoon AFL matches - and concluded with mourners performing a

lap of honour walk around the ground where Mr Couch formed his reputation as a player. The memorial followed a private family service earlier in the day. A skilful midfielder while playing for the Cats from 1985-1997, Mr Couch died of a heart attack while cycling with friends on 5 March. He was 51. Mr Couch is survived by his wife Geraldine and their four children.

Lyons victory to keep tree afloat Geelong councillors have backed down on threats to abandon the city’’s floating Christmas tree over rising costs. In a major win, Mayor Darryn Lyons announced this week that the tree would return to Corio Bay for the next three years. Councillors also agreed to pursue sponsorship opportunities to help defray the costs of installing and storing the tree, despite some earlier stating reservations about the idea. Cr Lyons said City Hall’s 2015 Christmas program, with the tree as its centrepiece, provided an economic benefit to the region, boosted Geelong’s profile and spread festive-season cheer throughout the community. “I’m overjoyed to let everyone know that Geelong’s floating christmas tree will return this year, along with a wide range of Christmas-themed family activities that form Geelong’s amazing Christmas program,” he said. “I know that the community loves Geelong’s floating christmas tree just as much as I do. “Over the past two years the tree has attracted about 286,000 visits and central Geelong’s Christmas activities have generated an economic output of $33 million. “Every night crowds flocked to the waterfront to watch the latest light and music shows, which had a flow-on effect for local businesses. “I’m glad the tree will return for the next three years, giving more children, families and visitors to our region the chance to experience a truly magical Christmas.” Cr Lyons said council had allocated about $400,000 in its draft budget to cover installation, dismantling, maintenance and storage of the tree. Geelong’s port manager had also committed

WIN: Darryn Lyons. to provide access free of charge for the 2016 tree installation, worth $100,000. Cr Michelle Heagney said the city’s 2015 Christmas program hoped to build on previous visitation rates. “Geelong’s Christmas program is so diverse, featuring projections on City Hall, school Christmas trees, extended Carousel hours, decorations, magic meter elves and the Myer Christmas windows,” Cr Heagney said. “Council surveyed participants on their experience and 90 per cent of respondents said our Christmas activities were very important or important for central Geelong.”

Geelong to get more custody relief Geelong has been promised more custody officers, relieving the region’s stretched police numbers, the state government has announced. The second squad of police custody officers will be deployed next week after graduating from the Victoria Police Academy on 15 March. Parliamentary Secretary for Justice Ben Carroll said the 21 new officers would free up sworn police to return to the jobs they were trained to do. Geelong’s new custody officers will start on Monday, along with others in Ballarat, Broadmeadows, Dandenong, Heidelberg and Sunshine. Mr Carroll said the squad was the first to undertake the foundation eight-week training program, including two weeks working at

police stations. He said the Andrews Labor Government had invested $148.6 million to recruit, train and deploy 400 custody officers in 22 police stations over the next three years. “Custody officers will be progressively deployed to a select number of other police stations throughout the year,” he said. “For the first time ever Victoria Police have dedicated professionals to manage individuals in police custody. “Police at local stations tell me how important these officers are at freeing up police, so they can get back on the beat to keep our community safe and fight crime.”

Cervical cancer screening drop

EVENT: Hugo T Armstrong.

City hall to call the tune City Hall’s major events unit will decide whether Geelong’s only major music festival goes ahead again next year, according to its organiser. The return of Motor City Music Festival hinged on Geelong Major Events convincing the council to help fund the event again in 2017, Hugo T Armstrong said. Thousands of patrons attended last weekend’s festival, which began on Friday night and culminated on Sunday with a family day. The event at Geelong Showgrounds is the only large-scale music festival within urban Geelong.

NOW OPEN

The show relies heavily on local suppliers to deliver a diverse bill including rock, tribute, blues, country and children’s performers over several stages. Mr Armstrong said Friday and Saturday attendance this year was on par with the first two festivals despite unpredictable weather but “the families just poured in” on Sunday. He was generally happy with the support and confident the festival could grow in 2017 after establishing itself on the city’s events calendar over the past three years. “We’ve done what we said we’d do, which was

make a major music festival for Geelong. Now it’s up to Geelong Major Events,” Mr Armstrong said. The Geelong Indy is a sponsor of Motor City Music Festival. Indy managing editor Tony Galpin said the paper would be happy to support the event again in 2017. “We’ve been behind Motor City since its debut in 2014. “Hugo and his team put on a great show for Geelong and we’d be delighted to see it return next year,” Mr Galpin said.

A concerning drop in cervical cancer screening rates in Geelong and the Surf Coast has medical authorities worried, new figures have revealed. The Victorian Cervical Cytology Registry 2014 annual report shows the drop was particularly prevalent among women aged 20 to 29 years. Less than half that age group was being regularly screened for cervical cancer, with test rates falling more than eight per cent to 46 per cent since 2006-’07. The report also revealed there had been an overall decline in screening rates across all age groups compared to the previous year. Geelong came in at 30 on a table of local government areas, with rates dropping from 63.3 per cent in 2013 to 62.3 per cent in 2014. Surf Coast dropped from 68.3 per cent in 2013 to 66.4 per cent in 2014. The highest screening rates were in Queenscliff, with 74.7 per cent of women having pap tests in 2013 rising to 76.2 per cent on 2014. Medical Director of the Victorian Cervical Cytology Registry, Professor Dorota Gertig said the fall in screening among women aged 20 to 29 years was of concern. “While many of Victoria’s young women have had the HPV vaccine to protect against most strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer, these women should not be complacent. “It’s vital for all vaccinated and un-vaccinated women to have regular Pap tests to be sure.” Minister for Health Jill Hennessy said women overdue for a test should book in as soon as possible.

FUNDING: Geelong’s proposed safe harbour project, with curved wave attenuator and redeveloped yacht club buildings.

Harbour project hit by $2m drop State Government is giving $4 million to Geelong’s $19 million safe harbour roject - short of the anticipated $6 million. Royal Geelong Yacht Club had hoped to also get $7 million from Federal Government. That request will now have to increase by $2 million to cover the State Government shortfall. City council has already pledged $3 million toward the stage-one upgrade of the project. The club is also putting in $3 million.

Federal Government has yet to publicly support the project. The club will apply for the money from the Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund. Minister for Environment and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville said the project would be “transformational” for Geelong’s waterfront. “We now call on the Federal Government to provide funding to see this vital project become a reality,” Ms Neville said. She said the safe harbour initiative would

bring economic and tourism benefits to Geelong, including creating a number of jobs in the region. “The project will help improve community and recreational facilities in the area and increase public access to the open space of the Geelong waterfront.” Minister for Tourism and Major Events and Lara MP John Eren said the waterfront was already a popular destination with visitors. “This upgrade will create renewed opportuni-

ties for local businesses and grow Geelong’s reputation as a world-class destination,” he said. The project includes a curved 280-metre long ‘wave attenuator’ to protect berthed vessels. The upgrade would also rebuild the club’s premises and deliver other facilities while improving public access to the site. The yacht club estimates the project will create more than 100 full-time and casual jobs, along with a similar amount during construction.

Tasers charge up police, now a permanent fixture By ALANA MITCHELSON Geelong police are permanently arming themselves with tasers after trialling the weapon since 2013. State Government announced this week it would roll out the “conducted energy devices” (CEDs) at more than 30 regional 24-hour police stations, including Geelong and Corio. Geelong local area commander Inspector Graham Banks said the tasers had been mostly a visual deterrent in the local trial. “CEDs have only been used about half a dozen times and no injuries have been reported from the use of them,” Insp Banks said. “They’ve been used many more times as a visual deterrent, being pointed at the offender to comply with instructions without the actual firing of the charge and have been extremely effective at de-escalating volatile situations. “Geelong was a pilot site and our experience has been that they’re a vital tool in safely resolving situations with violent and often armed offenders without the need to use lethal force.” Surf Coast local area commander Inspector Peter Seel said Colac but not Torquay police would also receive tasers under the roll out. “Tasers will be used as an extra tool police members can use when they believe the subject’s behaviour is likely to cause serious injury to themselves, police or the public and other tactical options are or have been ineffective in reducing the risk of serious injury. “Each station will receive sufficient numbers to equip operational units on any given shift.” Under the rollout, general duties and highway patrol officers have begun training to carry and use the tasers. Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam said

DETERRENT EFFECT: Inspector Graham Banks says tasers are an effective tool. the weapons would give police additional “nonlethal options for the resolution of incidents”. “Unfortunately, over recent years there has been an increase in the number of incidents where police have been confronted by armed and violent people and those who are drug or alcohol affected. “These are often physical confrontations where police, members of the community and the individuals themselves are at risk of being injured,” Ms Steendam said.

“Once our officers are trained in their use, CEDs can provide an additional tactical option to help resolve some of these high risk incidents. “They can only be used when it’s believed it will prevent death or serious injury. In many cases, the presentation of a CED alone can help to safely diffuse a situation.” Ms Steendam said officers would undertake two days of training before carrying tasers, with “strict accountability processes in place to monitor and record the use of CEDs”.

Up-and-coming Belmont basketballer Matthew Johns was one of three local young athletes to win a Victorian School Sports award yesterday. Netballer Tess Campigli from Montpellier Primary School and thrower Ned Weatherly from Bellarine Secondary College were also awarded. They were among junior athletes recognised with Sporting Blue medals at an awards ceremony at the MCG. Matthew was a member of the Australian Under 16 team that won gold at the 2015 FIBA Oceania qualifiers and this year will travel to Spain to play in the world championships. He has represented country Victoria at the Australian nationals and the Australian Junior Country Cup and plays representative basketball for Geelong in the VJBL Championship Reserve competition. A member of the National Intensive Training Program since Under 14, Matthew was last year invited to attend a development camp at the AIS. Now in their 22nd year, the Victorian School Sports Awards are the highest sporting accolade presented by the Victorian Government school system.

Family shocked at empty facility By ALANA MITCHELSON A unique Geelong palliative care facility is running at a third of capacity to the disbelief of the terminally ill and their families. But Anam Cara House staff say that a lack of funds means they can’t look after as many patients as they would like. Adrian Di Cristoforo said his family was relieved to find Anam Cara House after his nowdeceased mother, Ellie, was told late last year she had just months to live. A hospital had offered palliative care but the family was thrilled to have access to the additional support of Anam Cara, he said. “Within 15 minutes of contacting Anam Cara one of their volunteers was talking to me face-toface at the hospital. “Within two days they’d made arrangements to have mum transferred in time for her 60th birthday. “Mum was so ill that we didn’t know whether she was going to live to her birthday. It was the last time she was very coherent and the whole family was able to come in and celebrate. “It was the first time in months I’d seen her smile.” Mr Di Cristoforo said Anam Cara’s additional family-support services made him feel at home and “at ease” while improving his mother’s quality of life during her final days. He explained how a volunteer took a hand print of each “guest” to craft a personalised hexagon for addition to a quilt, which became a precious memento after their death. “The staff and volunteers were unbelievable and approach their work with passion,” Mr Di Cristoforo said. “There’s a kitchen to cook tea and we had a big family dinner one night. “Being Italian, we were able to cook meals we’d usually have at home and stay for as long as we wanted.

Anam Cara House's Gill Robertson, Tessa Davis and Rochelle Smithwith. “I found it shocking and just couldn’t understand why mum was the only person there for those 10 weeks. There were three other beds that just sat there, empty,” he said. Anam Cara House’s Rochelle Smith said the

facility could offer almost 1500 days’ worth of care and support for guests and their families. “In the past year we’ve run about one-third of our capacity. There are empty beds all throughout the year that could be filled by people in need,”

Ms Smith said. With no government funding, the facility relies on donations. Ms Smith said more information was available at anamcarahousegeelong.org.au.

All aboard for Bellarine service Why does any well-in-hand project have to become a political football? State departments like VicRoads, transport, water et cetera can do their job as required no matter who is in power. Political interference usually upsets the applecart but in the long run the original recommendations are found to be right, like Geelong’s ring road, which was shelved for 30 years, and the desalination plant. But there are also bloopers like Geelong’s bus-port and courthouse/police station complex which should have swapped places, or like the Bunnings Belmont car park, with traffic light onto the M1 but no other way in or out. The one I cannot understand is the call for duplication of train tracks to Marshall when the forgotten people of the Bellarine Peninsula drive 50km-plus to the South Geelong Railway Station to travel to work in Melbourne. A train once ran between South Geelong and Queenscliff. Its line could have been extended to Ocean Grove, which also would have catered for Barwon Heads, and at the other end gone straight to Melbourne via Point Henry, Avalon, Point Cook, Williamstown, Station Pier, terminating at Southern Cross Station. A bridge across The Rip is at least 100 years away or, under the Liberals, 200. E Ruseler South Geelong

Concerns over victim funds This seems an apt time in the Geelong area to bring up a few concerns about fundraisers for victims of accidents and other misfortunes. The funds should be administered professionally and responsibly on behalf of donors who should be confident that their generosity is wellmanaged. Payment of a lump sum to a family is not necessarily the best policy. Those who initiate fundraisers should be prepared to administer the funds until the money is

G21 harbouring too many priorities for funding While a $19 million safe harbour will enhance Geelong’s waterfront and add additional upside to a winner in The Festival of Sails (Geelong Indy, 11 March), it could have been packaged differently and seamlessly implemented had G21 been doing its job on a more costeffective basis. Agreed, it wouldn’t have been everybody’s cup of tea but it would have been a means to an end; a private developer/operator with a 99-year lease on a 24/7 interactive Yarra Street Pier to include cruise liner berthing, an attached floating marina to the east, market and hospitality facilities and perhaps a boutique cinema and a Ferris wheel, all at no cost to the public purse. Well done to the Indy for having the character to point out this G21 "priority project’’ anomaly. As it stands in an election year with Corangamite swinging, G21 has 17 priority projects sharing equal billing. The major parties, when exhausted. Recipients should forward accounts and receipts to the fund for payment of necessary, valid expenses. Before setting up a public fund, people should be better informed of existing assistance for the beneficiaries, especially in the case of road accidents, which are mostly covered by the TAC. Items not covered by the TAC would include petrol and other travel expenses, accommodation and parking near the hospital and loss of penalty rates for a parent taking time off. Where the parents are divorced or separated, fathers can be refused a share of the funds when given as a lump sum but they must keep up maintenance payments during the crisis period. So what are the rules and regulations governing these funds? Where is a list of where the money goes?

Pumpkins at The Paddock There is an abundance of pumpkins at Encompass’ farm “The Paddock” and for the second year the Pumpkin Fair will be held this Saturday March 19 at 10am on O’Halloran Rd, Leopold. Last year the event attracted over 2000 people and this year promises to be even bigger. It’s all about the pumpkin with a Pumpkin Pageant being held to judge the biggest, smallest, fattest, worst dressed, best dressed etc. Everyone is encouraged to bring along a pumpkin, either bought or grown, to enter in the pageant! There will be market stalls with arts and craft, jewellery, food, petting zoo, jumping castle, face painting, sausage sizzle and more. Fresh produce direct from The Paddock will be available and lots of pumpkins to eat in the form of pies, soup, scones, muffins and pizza. Entertainment will be throughout the day including Geelong raised Tim McCallum, as seen on the Voice. This is a true community event proudly sponsored by Leopold Community Bank, contributing $5000. Other major sponsors are SC Technology, Signarama, Allpoints Real Estate and Pulse FM who will broadcast live from the fair. All funds raised on the day go towards a new Training Wing to be built at the farm focusing on training for real jobs in the region. 1220652-LN11-16

The taste of India EVEN the spices are homemade at Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant. It’s all part of business owner Sandeep ’Sandy’ Kaushal’s dream to have “the best restaurant in Geelong”. Modern with an Indian touch, Sandy has adorned the walls with Indian wooden delights and a large handcrafted mirror. He previously ran a successful Indian restaurant in Ocean Grove but decided to launch Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant to give more people an opportunity to try the cuisine. “My head chef, Ayub Khokhar, has 20 years’ experience and has even worked overseas – he’s very popular and has a great reputation. “He won the 2015 Geelong Father of the Year award too.”

And within just one month, Sandy has already reached the same level his previous business had. “Everybody is coming here saying they have never tasted such good food,” Sandy says. “Our prices are very competitive; the menu ranges from $2 to $25.” Sandy recommends trying the Tandoori Platter, Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala. Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant seats up to 90, offers pick up options and delivers free for orders within a 10 kilometre radius. Sandy recommends booking a reservation if planning to dine in over the weekends. Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant is open from noon-10pm, seven days a week at 17 Pakington Street, Geelong West, phone 5229 0077.

Legendary line-up back to future By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN It must be one of the greatest collections of 1970s and ’80s Australian performers ever assembled on a single stage. That’s despite one of them being beamed in via video link in a very noughties technical advance. The Legends of the Southern Land tour features Marty Rhone, John Swanee Swan, John St Peeters and Ray Burgess. World-renowned guitarist Tommy Emmanuel will be there in virtual reality, Rhone explained. “Tommy will be halfway across the world yet performing with us in real time, so it’s amazing what technology can do,” he said. “When the audience sees it they

will be gobsmacked. The visual aspect of the show is stunning. People will have a lot to look at.” Rhone agreed the music of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s with modern technology was a marriage of opposites. “I’ll even be performing Denim and Lace with myself as a young bloke back in the ’70s,” Rhone laughed. “Audiences won’t notice any difference - although if they look closely they might notice a few intervening years,” he said, tongue in cheek. “A bit of make-up, lighting and a smoke machine can create wonders.” The Legends of the Southern Land tour will also pay homage to artists no longer with us, the likes of Billy Thorpe of The Aztecs, Doc

John ‘Swanee’ Swan

Neeson of the Angels, Jim Keys of the Masters Apprentices, Marc Hunter of Dragon and Darryl Cotton of The Zoot. “It means a lot to us to be able to pay tribute to guys we shared a stage with for so many years,” Rhone said. The enduring popularity of the golden hits was a reflection of the times, Rhone mused. “Music no longer has emotional connection it did back in the ‘70s,” he said. “Everything today is so fast, there’s nothing to feel, nothing to have an emotional experience with. “In our era it was all so tangible. You had something to look at on an album cover, like photos, cover notes, it became a keepsake. “These days it’s all up there

Marty Rhone

floating around the ether, probably digitally downloading in the background.” Part of the catalyst for the tour was Rhone’s own milestone, celebrating his 50th anniversary in showbusiness. “We’ve all kept in touch over the years, and when we work together it’s as if we’d never been apart,” Rhone said. “We thought it would be great to go out under one banner based on a great Aussie theme.” Joining the tour is James Cupples, whose full throttle performances were seen by millions on Channel 9’s The Voice. Legends of the Southern Land will play Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 2 April.

Bro pop reaches out to the world By ALANA MITCHELSON Country/pop trio Brothers3 is on the way to Geelong as part of the band’s largest tour yet, covering everything from east coast capital cities to rural towns. Having grown up on a farm in NSW country town of Mudgee, the Fahey-Leigh brothers Tayzin, Makirum and Shardyn - know firsthand that it’s rare for bigger acts to tour remote areas. “We know what it’s like to not have your favourite artists tour your regional or rural town,” Tayzin said. “That’s one of the main reason why we want to make sure we reach those audiences who don’t get to see a lot out their way. “You get a crazy response from those crowds.” The 19-year-old described the band’s new single C’mon as a sing-a-long anthem. It was one of the first co-written songs that Brothers3 had experienced input from a third party during the songwriting process, which turned out to be a relaxed jam session. They recorded the album Brothers Never Part with ARIA award-winning producer Matt Fell who had previously worked with the likes of country singer Troy Cassar-Daley. The record debuted at number 11 on the ARIA mainstream charts and number one on the country music charts. After eight to nine years of playing pub gigs, Brothers3 boosted its nationwide popularity after placing third on the television singing contest X Factor in 2014. “The show wasn’t at all what I thought it would be. I thought they might try to manipulate our sound or change us but it wasn’t like that at all. They’re there to help you,” Tayzin said. “We’ve been able to reach a lot more people with our music.

THREE CHEERS: Brothers3 brings country sounds to GPAC in May.

“But it always important for us to go back home to the farm, see our friends and family and do some physical labour. It keeps us grounded.” The trio were recently nominated for Best New Talent at the Golden Guitar awards. Tayzin said that fans could expect a lot of instruments on stage at their live shows and a new

segment, Fresh From the UK, in the first part of the show whereby the boys pay tribute to popular UK artists such as Ed Sheeran, One Direction, Adele and Coldplay. They will also play their favourite X Factor covers including Elvis’s Always on My Mind and Simon and Garfunkel’s The Sound of Silence.

Tayzin, who has a background in acting as well as singing and dancing, said he hoped the band’s music videos and performances could incorporate more of those elements in the future. Brothers3 plays at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s Drama Theatre on 21 May.

ON THE MOVE: Goldsworthy Reserve will host Geelong Highland Gathering this weekend.

Clans moving to Corio on Sunday Geelong Highland Gathering will move to its fifth location in eight years when Corio’s Goldsworthy Reserve has its turn as host on Sunday. Sport is again behind the gathering’s latest shift with upgrades to Deakin University playing fields ruling out the Waurn Ponds campus site used in recent years. Clashes with sports also forced the event off its traditional home, Queen’s Park, several years ago. In another change, this year’s gathering has also reverted to its traditional date of the third Sunday in March. Geelong Highland Gathering Association president John Jordan lamented the numerous location changes since 2004.

“We’re sad to have to leave Deakin and the university was good to us. We saw a future there and we’re gradually rebuilding,” he said. “The continual moves of recent years has seen crowds fluctuate downwards and has put a great deal of pressure on the dedicated, hardworking committee, who will not be defeated by adversity.” Jordan said Sunday’s gathering would feature “all the usual events” including pipe band and Highland dancing competitions, a Scottish Heavy Games, various stalls, entertainment and free children’s activities. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $10 by concession, $8 for children aged five to 16, and $40 for a family of four.

A display of award-winning artist Steve Salo’s portraiture is among the highlights of this year’s Geelong After Dark installation. Salo approached Geelong’s Back to Back Theatre for a collaboration after coming across a picture of its artistic director Bruce Gladwin. “I knew this was a guy I wanted to paint. I had him on my fridge for six months, then it was after I saw the show Sucker that I approached the company.” Salo explained that the theatre’s troupe of actors with disabilities each had an “intense and powerful presence”. “Simon completely drew me in. His face and emotion are a painter’s dream - all of them are.” The internationally acclaimed theatre company uses its ensemble in productions often expressing social and political issues. Salo had one-hour sittings with each actor in which he chatted with, sketched and then photograph the subject. “I loved every second of those sittings. For a portrait painter you can’t beat spending time with the person and it comes through in the painting.

The team at Wayne’s Wheel Alignment and Service Centre are experts in suspension and wheel alignments. Wayne’s Wheel Alignment (WWA) offers general servicing and repairs on cars as well as dirt and road motorbikes, and suspension repairs. They also offer set-ups for race cars. Owner Rob White grew up around trucks, cars and motorbikes, and has always had an interest in classic cars. “We often have people coming in just to admire some of the old classics that our team work on,“ he said. “We’ve had Mustangs, early Holdens and Fords, Dodge Phoenixes and early Chevrolets. We’ve even had a 1937 Packard, to name a few. “The time and effort people put into restoring some of these old cars is phenomenal. It’s great to see these cars still on the road.“ Mr White said they had many loyal customers who had been coming in for the 30 odd years WWA had been in operation since ’91. “We now even have our older clients’ children and grandchildren coming in,“ he said. “We always have one-on-one time with our customers and have a bit of a friendly joke around together. “We take enormous pride in our work. We provide tips to customers so they can learn how to do things like checking their oil and tyre pressures. “We recommend drivers to get their cars serviced every six months or after each 10,000 kilometres.“ WWA is offering a free rotation and wheel balancing with every service until the end of February if you mention reading about the deal in the Geelong Indy. Wayne’s Wheel Alignment is at 25 Crows Road, Belmont. For more information, phone 5244 3742 or visit facebook.com/wayneswheelalign.

Easy, efficient and expert at parts, repairs for all vehicles Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including offroad and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.

A company you can feel secure with It may be a ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ in Keats’ poetic England, but in Melbourne, autumn can throw up anything from a sizzler to an icy blast. And this is where family-owned On Site Flyscreens – opened by Simon Geddes more than 16 years ago, with brother Ben joining him in 2006 – comes in. The firm specialises in the manufacture and installation of roller shutters, along with flyscreens (including retractables), screen doors, grilles and security doors. Simon says roller shutters are fantastic additions to homes, for any season and for two important reasons. He’s also keen to encourage installation – so mention this story for a 30 per cent discount. “Melbourne’s seasons have lots of temperature extremes and roller shutters have great insulation qualities,” he says. “If it’s like other autumns, we’ll see hot days through to frosty mornings, so on days when things get unexpectedly uncomfortable, home owners can down their shutters to alter internal temperature and potentially save big on energy bills.

Beautiful trees adorn the Geelong Botanic Gardens.

“Roller shutters are also good at deterring unwelcome interest so they’re a highly recommended security investment.” Now, there’s not a good business around that doesn’t lay claim to great customer service, but, as Simon says, they really do offer ‘that bit extra’. “Our team, dependent only on weather and parking, can usually have a flyscreen measured, made and fitted on the spot,” he says. “Now that’s fast! And they start from as little as $49. Along with this, our customers deal with the same highly skilled tradesperson all the way through any job, right from measuring up. This provides a welcome consistency for any customer.” Free quotes and a wide selection of styles and powder coating colours are also on offer. And just in case you’re wondering if you’ll be in good hands, most of the crew at On Site Flyscreens have been with the business for about 12 years, so have garnered great skills and know how to treat people – not to mention they must be good blokes to work with. On Site Flyscreens are at 16 Mary Court, Epping and are open from 6.30am-6pm Monday to Saturday. Phone them on 9401 3066.

Garden heritage Established over a century and a half ago the Geelong Botanic Gardens has a fascinating history and recognised heritage value. In 1851 the Government had the foresight to set land aside at the edge of the Geelong settlement for the development of a Botanic Garden. An exposed site of 200 acres with bay frontage and little vegetation has been transformed during the past 150 years to become Eastern Park and the Geelong Botanic Gardens. The Geelong Botanic Gardens and Eastern Park have recognised heritage value.

They are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Trees in the Botanic Gardens and Eastern Park are some of the finest examples in Victoria. Thirty six trees are listed on the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Register of Significant Trees. The gardens are home to some of the city’s heritage buildings. The Cabmans Shelter and the Ladies Kiosk are great features. The fountains which used to be in Market Square are now part of the fabric of the garden.

Flyscreens will keep you pest-free, regardless of the season.

COURSES & CAREERS

Train for career rewards For the past 10 years, AGB Training (AGB) has been educating students within Geelong and surrounding areas to make a difference within the community. AGB Community Services student Alice chose this course because of her personal experiences. “Growing up my mum was an alcoholic and suffered from mental illnesses. “I then left home early and was involved in a bad relationship which was also affected by drugs and family violence. “I just want to give back and help others going through the same things, because it’s a

really hard time. Denis O’Brien, AGB’s Community Services Training Consultant, has more than 20 years’ experience working in the mental health and drug and alcohol field and said he finds teaching community service courses very rewarding. “It’s really rewarding to provide students with this knowledge and to help them feel confident about working in the field of community services. “It also assists them to overcome the misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health

and drug and alcohol issues, which is really important. “AGB’s Community Services courses are fantastic, he said. “You get to know yourself better and understand others better. It’s also a very broad field which can open up a lot of opportunities. “It is definitely one of the most rewarding and expanding work forces we have. Those who are interested in gaining a nationally recognised qualification in community services can contact AGB Training on 1300 123 242.

Edu-Kingdom College’s newest branch is about to open in Geelong. This will be the coaching college’s 30th branch since its inception in 2007. Over the course of nine years this rapidly growing tutoring company has seen thousands of students successfully achieve their academic goals and, no doubt, Geelong students will soon share in this success. Whether students are aiming to get higher scores in NAPLAN tests, to get a seat in SEALP, to receive a scholarship or to pass the entrance examination for a selective school, they are all assisted by Edu-Kingdom College teachers and staff who utilise acclaimed materials and a welldesigned curriculum. Students generally face more challenging problem solving questions in their classes rather than simple arithmetic ones. In addition, revision tests are held every 10 weeks to monitor students’ progress. Specialised courses also exist, such as the power writing courses which serve to improve participants’ writing skills. Students in trial test courses can also take advantage of the e-Learning courses at no additional charge. The slogan of Edu-Kingdom College is ‘Fulfil Your Dream’ and it can be seen that students do not only improve their academic levels but they also achieve their goals. A special promotion is running until the end of May 2016 offering a $200 discount to any student who enrols for 20 weeks in three subjects. A free assessment will also be available. For any inquiries, phone 5241 8263.

SPORT Cats pre-season purr By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

ON THE BITE Chris Pitman

FITNESS TEST: Skipper Joel Selwood hopes to prove his fitness in the VFL on Friday night. injury and is on track to play against Hawthorn with a hit out in the VFL against Richmond on Friday to prove it. The skipper said he would be “surprised” if he didn’t take the field against the Cats’ modern rivals. A win would announce Geelong for 2016 like nothing else could. Coaches and assistant coaches have been tem-

pering expectations, warning that team chemistry is an unknown quantity. That will be less of an issue in the midfield and more obvious up forward, where a couple of pieces of the puzzle have yet to fall into place for the Cats. Organising the attack to maximise Hawkins’ size and power and stretch defences will be high on Chris Scott’s to-do list.

Cats storm into semi finals berth LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club’s Third XI has progressed through to the Premier Cricket semi finals after they put in an outstanding effort to defeat St Kilda last week. In a system where the lower ranked team has to win, while the higher ranked team can simply draw the match to progress, the Cats were aggresive from the outset, knocking up 248 (declared) on the back of 66 to Joe Vallelonga and 64 to Michael Condy. From there, the bowlers went to work, skipper Jake Clapham snaring 3/21, before paceman Shane Van Den Nouwland destroyed the Saints lower order with some fearsome fast bowling, taking 4/28 to see the Cats home by 97 runs. They will now play Melbourne Uni at Bill Lawry Oval for a spot in the grand final. In Geelong Cricket Association, it’s Grand Final weekend, and in Division One it is Grovedale who progressed through to take on minor premier East Belmont in the decider at Queens Park. While neither side had it all their own way last

week, they both had enough depth and will power to get the job done. East Belmont were asked to bowl first against South Barwon, and the Swans never really put any meaningful partnerships together. While Brad Hauenstein top scored with 40, he lacked support as Dave Lineen went to work taking 5/54, while evergreen star Chris Bambury took 3/48, as the Swans could only manage 160. In reply, East slumped to 2/31 early, but Andrew Baars stood firm in a classical knock of 85 not out to guide his side into the big one by 4 four wickets. Grovedale took on Lara at South Barwon, and although Lara started well with a 46 run opening stand to Ben Smiljanic and Rob Sodomaco, the Tigers were cock a hoop approaching stumps when they dismissed them for just 139. But with eight overs to bat, they amazingly lost 3/4 as Danny Hughes and Luke Wilson struck with the new ball. Jack James began the follwoing day in positive fashion making 41, while Gareth Yelland continued his recent good form guiding the side home by four wickets with a sure handed 42 not out. It's 10 years since these two sides last played off

in a Grand Final, on that occasion East were too strong, and if they can play at their best this weekend they should be able to get the same result. In division two, St Albans Breakwater progressed through to the Grand Final after smashing Marshall, but it isn’t Highton they will play as most people expected, but St Peters. Highton were dominant early, with four bowlers all taking two wickets apiece as they bundled out St Peters for just 130. But Sunday provided a complete turnaround as veteran opening bowler Steve Illingworth took 6/70 from a marathon 30 overs to dismiss the fancied Heat for just 121. St Albans Breakwater started nervously in their game, falling to 7/68 before Justin Miller with 50 and Andrew Vine with 67 took the score to 197 at stumps. In reply, Marshall never looked like getting anywhere near that score, all out for a disappointing 55, Vine again the star with 6/7. It’s hard to St Albans Breakwater throwing away a golden opportunity to win the cup, and should get the job done. And in division three, the two best sides all year will meet in the big dance. Shelford finished the season on top for a reason, and could just be a bit too classy for Bannockburn.

Warriors true to name By Josip Zilic North Geelong Warriors enter the FFA CUP 4th Round this coming weekend against Shepparton South on Saturday. There is little known about the side from the Goulburn Valley other than they have had a giant killing run in taking out State League teams Monash City and Booroondara in the process with nail-biting ends, scoring last minute goals to get themselves into Round 4 against the Warriors. North Geelong will be buoyed after a convincing 4-0 win over Sunshine George Cross last weekend at Elcho Park. The contest was a cagey affair with a few nervous moments for North Geelong including a lob that nearly cleared keeper Daniel Zilic. However, the contest changed when Geor-

gies keeper Rob Santilli came off second best in a one-on-one with Warriors midfielder Burakhan Koce and needed to be stretchered off. Minutes later, the Warriors pressure led to a long throw from Matt Townley that was met by Matt Thorne whose looping header beat substitute keeper Jon Harboglou. The Warriors then put the foot down and Michael Anderson had a crack at goal which was well saved by Harboglou but Rudi Saglam was quick to respond and slotted the ball in for 2-0 and his first in the Red, White and Blue. Anderson turned scorer just before the break, receiving a through ball from Nicholas Jurcic he checked his sights and seeing the keeper off his line he released a pin point shot from 25 metres to notch up his third for the season to date. The momentum continued in North Geelong’s

Corio Bay continued providing with healthy bags of pinkie snapper and flathead over the past week. The spoil grounds in Stingaree Bay, north of Limeburner’s Point boat ramp, produced pinkies to 45cm and flathead averaging the same size. Casting soft plastics ahead of the drift was ideal. In the outer-harbour, Wilson Spit again produced snapper to 5kg on fresh squid. Queenscliff fished well for whiting to 45cm, with the fish spread from the harbour entrance through to Point Lonsdale Bite. A few moves required to locate numbers of fish, which were usually found on sand patches surrounded by grass beds in 5m to 7m of water. Anglers who fished offshore from Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads had to cover plenty of water to find kingfish and tempting to bite was no easy task. Live-baiting or trolling lures caught kings to 75cm. Surf Coast rock platforms produced Australian salmon to 2.5kg on metal lures, especially when allowed to sink before the retrieve when the fish shut down. The Western District turned on some of the state’s best fishing, both in the salt and freshwater. Portland fished well for salmon to 3.5kg and southern bluefin tuna in as little as 8 metres. East of the harbour was the best ground, with anglers casting stick bait lures into surface commotion boating tuna to 30kg and salmon as well. Kevin McCloughan ventured out from Warrnambool on Saturday in search of sharks. Kevin caught a mako of 161kg on 24kg tackle, which took some serious angling skill to subdue. I travelled to Lake Bullen Merri last Friday, trolling about 10m of water with downriggers around Potter’s Point. I found numerous rainbow trout to 2kg and shaped like footballs. Next week should be good for a mixed bag on Corio Bay, while a trip to Lake Bullen Merri for trout to Portland for kingfish and tuna could also be worthwhile.

FATBOY: One of Chris Pitman's rainbow trout from Lake Bullen Merri.

MY BALL: The Warriors' Rudi Saglam keeps opponent Sam McCall at bay. (Ivan Dugandzic) favour after the break, but they were left to lament the chances that didn’t go in, with several whisking past the target including a series of shots that hit the post and crossbar somehow staying out of the goal. As the match’s fizz began to dissipate, Jurcic went on one of his forays toward goal and was upended in the penalty area earning a spot kick, which Townley dispatched with usual aplomb.

Geelong will be happy with its pre-season journey to the round one Easter Monday blockbuster against Hawthorn, despite some losses and injury concerns. The Cats wanted to get the bulk of their senior players through the three games unscathed, and by and large that goal has been kicked. Jimmy Bartel was wrapped in cotton wool after a heavy knock early in the game against Fremantle, but with two week’s break, he will be fine to tackle the Hawks. A couple of knee injuries have soured the preparation somewhat, but this season Geelong has sufficient cover. Prized recruit Patrick Dangerfield has well and truly demonstrated the value he brings to the side. He is third in Brownlow Medal odds, with Joel Selwood seventh. More than form, it is obvious Dangerfield is in a happy place, relishing his new role, showing leadership and feeling at home. The key to the season will be how the two guns fire side by side. That has been the only downer for Geelong’s coaching staff out of the NAB Challenge - a lack of game time for the superstars together. Watching Selwood and Dangerfield operate in tandem will be a sight to behold, given the form lines of both. The biggest benefit will be on-field leadership, with Dangerfield showing the way when Selwood is taking a break, and vice versa. But the reality will only become apparent on the ground, as big name tandems have failed as often as they have fired. Selwood says he has recovered from a foot
