For the kids By KATH GANNAWAY WHEN CFA volunteers head out rattling their tins for the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal on Good Friday, they will be doing it for the kids. Kids like 4-year-old Jaxon Wheeler and Hunter Livesay, 2. The families have a lot in common as the Mail discovered when their mums met last week to promote the Appeal. Hunter’s mum, Sam, is Appeal co-ordinator with Hillcrest Fire Brigade. That role became very much more real when little Hunter was diagnosed with a condition called Pyloric Stenosis at three weeks old. The condition happens when muscles in part of the lower stomach put pressure on the tube conveying food from the stomach to the bowel. He couldn’t keep his food down and was back to his birth weight when he was referred to the Children’s Hospital. “They made the diagnosis within an hour and had an operation to open up the muscle the next day,” Sam said. Jaxon was diagnosed with a deadly heart condition 22 weeks into mum, Theresa’s, pregnancy. “The 16 weeks that I knew about the condition was absolutely terrifying,” Theresa said. Jaxon’s condition, in layman’s terms, is that the right side of his heart didn’t grow. “One option was to induce at 22 weeks and he would pass away. “We decided we would give him the best chance we could and he has proven to be a real little trouper with it,” Theresa said. He was induced at 38 weeks and the first of a series of three surgeries, connecting his blood flow to the lung artery, was done. Theresa describes the impact on the family as horrendous. “We try to live as normal a life as we can; it gets hard when he is in hospital. “It’s scary for all of us, but Jaxon has always been a tough little cookie. Throughout their ordeals, the women say it’s the Royal Children’s Hospital that has provided the confidence to deal with everything that has

been thrown at them. Sam said there was an enormous sense of relief at having a diagnosis and confidence in the care he received in intensive care. “There was one nurse to two babies and they were with him 24/7 in the room,” she said. Sam and her husband Paul will both be on the Hillcrest truck, or door-knocking on Good Fri-
day, and are looking forward to what she says is a great experience with people happy to open their door and give. Theresa, and Jaxon, will be waiting for the big red fire engine in their street. Theresa said it’s not just through her own experience that would encourage everyone to support the Appeal. She said she has seen so many examples of

what an amazing hospital it is. “The surgeons, doctors, nursing staff - what normal people would think the impossible, they do it,” Theresa urged people to give and to go onto the RCH website to see what the money is spent on. If you miss your local CFA when they call, call in at your local fire station and make a donation.

By KATH GANNAWAY HODDLES Creek community celebrated on Saturday, 19 March, the building that has been the hub of their rural community for the past 100 years. State School No 2541 was a small one-room rural school when it was built for the mining community of Hoddles Creek in 1915. The first 31 students took to their desks in 1916, and the building is still used today by the 27 students. Among highlights of the day were the opening of the Centenary Garden, designed by renown landscape architect Andrew Laidlaw, community stalls, a photo display in a recreation of the class of 2016, old-time games on the oval, the introduction of new principal, Ben Zimmerle, and a Centenary Dinner. School council president, Carolyn Cole-Sinclair, spoke of the history of the school, in-

Council caves in on tree By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Ranges Council will apply for a planning application to remove a potentially lethal tree at the Yarra Junction Reserve, and pay for removal, if it is granted. Sporting clubs that had called for the tree to be removed had originally been advised that they would need to apply for the permit and pay for removal. The turn-around came after an impassioned plea from O’Shannassy Ward councillor, Jim Child, to fellow councillors at the 8 March council meeting. The clubs, Yarra Junction Football/ Netball Club, Yarra Junction Junior Netball Club and Yarra Junction Cricket Club wrote to the council saying the tree had begun to drop limbs and added that its location, between the practice cricket nets and adjacent to the netball courts, made it dangerous to players and others who used the facilities. The walkway to the netball courts is under the tree. Cr Jim Child told the meeting that at a site meeting with council staff and a community representative for the clubs, it was suggested that to appraise the matter further, a town planning permit was required. The requirement for user groups to apply for the permit, he said, had astounded him. “I just can’t handle that,” he said.
The giant gum sporting clubs want removed. 151549 He referred to letters from the clubs that detailed the hundreds of people who use the facilities adjacent to the tree. He said he had been advised by the council’s arborist that the risk assessment was now “between low and moderate”.
Picture: KATH GANNAWAY
“But, to me, there is a risk on the ground and the residents and the people who use the recreation reserve also believe there is a risk.” Speaking with the Mail this week, Cr Child said the requirement to apply for a planning permit raised a number of questions, including who paid for
the removal of the tree, and who paid the offset if it was required. “Offset for a tree that size could be tens of thousands of dollars,” Cr Child said. He said the last limb that fell landed on the seating area and that it was
fortunate that at the time no-one was there. “In that highly concentrated area, where kids, mums, pushers, and on game day when you could have 80 or 90 people there, if the same thing happened, I think we (the council) would be in strife,” he said. He said he was preparing a motion on the matter to put to council. “I want to have a clear conscience that I’ve done the most I can possibly do in regards to representing the users of that recreation reserve to overcome this problem,” he said. The Mail contacted the council who said there had been a misunderstanding and that council would be submitting a planning permit application on behalf of the clubs to remove the tree. Yarra Ranges Council’s director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, said if a permit was approved, they would get three quotes and pay for the works which he estimated would cost around $3200. He said the tree had been inspected twice and was identified as healthy with no risk. “This is why the recommendation was for no works to be undertaken,” Mr Vermalis said. “Like residents, council is also subject to the requirements of the planning process where a tree on council land, not assessed as being high risk, is being considered for removal.”

PUB bus by night ... church bus by Sunday. It’s a collaboration made in heaven according to aged-care residents Dorothy Cooper, Dawn Hill and Liz Haines. Millgrove Baptist Church borrows the courtesy bus from the Sam Knott Hotel in Wesburn each Sunday morning to pick up older parishioners who otherwise would be unable to attend the service. The deal was clinched during a trivia night at the hotel when church members mentioned to publican, Eileen Mackay, that they were looking for transport for the Sunday service. “We don’t use the bus on Sunday mornings, and it is an easy thing to do,” Eileen said. “The bus is there and we know they are not tearing around the streets. “It’s a good thing all round.” Dorothy, Dawn and Liz get picked up from Estia Health Aged-Care in Yarra Junction and often head out for a bit of a Sunday drive to Powelltown to pick up another church-goer, making it a very pleasant outing indeed. Although there is a combined church service at the facility each week, the woman say attending a service in a church is particularly relevant, and also helps them maintain their connection to the outside world.
“Just getting away from the hospital atmosphere and meeting people outside of here, is something I really look forward to,” Dorothy said. The ladies said keeping tapped into the Christian background which the Church provided was important to them. Liz said there was a more spiritual feeling in the church. “It also helps maintain our independence and community spirit,” she said. Bus driver Owen Bastian said the arrangement was brilliant is so many ways. “We used to pick up in individual cars, but this is so much easier to get in and out of, especially for anyone using a wheel-chair,” he said. The church now has its own set of keys now for the Sunday after pick up, and Pastor Ray McDonald said it had made a huge difference to the overall experience of getting to and from church. “We’re a small church of older folk and we’re very grateful to Eileen for making the bus available to help us help some of those parishioners to maintain their connection to the church community,” he said. The church service is at 10am and there are places available on the bus. Phone 5967 1780 or 0424 866 278 to join Owen and the bus crew on the Sunday drive.

Violence up, police ratios low of
affairs Cindy McLeish MP Member for Seymour
LAST Thursday, the State’s Crime Statistics Agency released figures for 2015 showing an 8.1 per cent jump in overall crime in the past year across Victoria. Locally, Yarra Ranges Shire Council crime rates have grown by 11 per cent - greater than the state average.
There has been a 10 per cent increase in drug-related crimes, a 26 per cent increase in weapons-related crimes and an 18 per cent rise in sexual assault. These statistics are not just numbers on a page. They represent the fact that more and more harm is being inflicted on people in our region day by day. (Victorian Premier) Daniel Andrews’ response to this crime wave has been to watch while police stations close, police numbers per capita are cut and new gangs commit drive-by shootings and undertake crime sprees with arrogance and contempt for our communities.
In response to these alarming facts, I am asking our community to support my petition calling on the Andrews Labor Government to commit to providing additional frontline police numbers as a matter of priority. Victoria is growing by 100,000 people a year, and our police are facing complex challenges working with issues such as family violence and the ice epidemic. These are issues that can affect all members of our community and it’s important that we have a conversation about local crime. In order to address local crime, we need to talk about crime prevention
and safety at a local level. I am committed to talking to local police, businesses and residents about how we can work together to address crime in the Yarra Ranges. Late last year, I was proud to host a crime and safety forum at my electorate office. With the Yarra Glen Chamber of Commerce, Victoria Police and our local Federal Member for Casey Tony Smith MP, we discussed strategies that local businesses can use to ensure their security such as installing CCTV cameras and limiting the amount of cash held on premises. Additionally, Shadow Minister for

Vice-captain Steele Sidebottom gives the students some pointers. 151658
Top Pies descend on valley college By PETER DOUGLAS THERE was a smile on students’ faces as wide as the MCG on Wednesday morning, 16 February. As part of the AFL’s commitment to fostering strong community links, Collingwood footballers Travis Cloke and Steele Sidebottom visited the Healesville High School. They received a rock starlike welcome as they mingled and kicked the footy with a select group of Year 9 physical education students. The students were only too keen to participate in some warm-up drills with the players, before moving in to some training drills and engaging in a question-and-answer session. When addressing the students, Cloke was straight on the front foot. “I play for Collingwood and I often cop flak for missing goals,” he joked. One student asked if “you need good grades to become and AFL footballer”, to which
Magpie Travis Cloke signed a jersey for Year 8 student, Leigh Newman. 151658 Sidebottom answered diplomatically, “yes, you do”. Both stars predicted big things for their club this year, after the Magpies enjoyed a strong preseason campaign in which they were undefeated. The school's AFL Ambassador, Kerry Davies, said she was thrilled to have such highprofile players visit. “We’re just rapt to have Tra-
vis and Steele here today,” she said. “It’s great the AFL continue to get behind schools and promote football at grassroots level. “We have Hawthorn coming here next week.” The school's long-time physical education teacher Brian Darcy said such visits might prove the inspiration for their students to take the next step. He said the school had many students who participated in playing football, including many girls. Mr Darcy noted pathways were rapidly opening up for women to play in the women’s AFL. This also includes for his daughter, Sarah, who is being widely tipped to be among the first group of females to be recruited this year for the AFL’s coming women’s competition. “As a Richmond fan, I’m hoping Richmond gets a women’s team, so she can play for the Tigers,” he said.
THE popularity of the Yarra River behind the main street in Warburton brings the town alive in summer, but it has had some unforeseen consequences which are about to be remedied. Yarra Ranges Council is partnering with Melbourne Water on a project aimed at restoring the eroded riverbank and providing more stable access to the river for water play, swimmers, canoeists and anglers. The project will involve stabilising the river bank with rock work stepping down into the river, which will help protect the bank during peak river flows. Council has been working with Melbourne Water on the design of the $385,000 project, taking into account feedback from community consultation on the project last year. Works are expected to begin just after Easter, and be completed in 2017. O’Shannassy ward councillor Jim Child said the Yarra River in Warburton was a beautiful place for people to sit and relax or fish. “However, over the years this popularity has meant we are now seeing signs of erosion along this particular section (Thomas Avenue) of the river bank, which will require some stabilisation works to ensure it can remain a place for people to use,” he said. Melbourne Water Manager Regional Services (North-East), Greg Bain, said the Yarra River was vital to Melbourne’s status as the world’s most liveable city
Collaborative effort - Dan Robertson (Melbourne Water, Waterways and Lands Officer, Gordon Buller (River Reserve committee) Cr Jim Child, Jeff Gill (WAL) Leon Hassall (Council Urban Design) and Mark Scida (Melbourne Water, Picture: KATH GANNAWAY Program Leader). 151709 and an essential component of the Warburton community. “This project is particularly important because it reduces stormwater, creates healthier waterways and improves the local environment for the Warburton community and visitors.” Rain gardens along the bank will be renewed and replanted to assist in maintaining water quality and a water-sensitive wetland will also be created to help reduce pollution and litter in the river. The installation of a stormwater pollutant trap will further stop litter and nutrients from stormwater entering the river. Cr Child said the lookout platform over the river would also be rebuilt and signage and footpath upgrades would help formalise access to the river bank, encouraging visitors to keep off other vegetated areas to avoid further damage. The project also got the
thumbs-up from Warburton Advancement League president, Jeff Gill, and Upper Yarra River Reserve Committee of Management president, Gordon Buller. Mr Buller said the River Reserve committee, which manages the reserve along the river on behalf of DELWP, had been involved from the start because of their concern about erosion. “With no pool in the town, this section is the only place to swim now, and somewhere people can bring their children, so we’re happy that this work is happening,” Mr Buller said. Melbourne Water program leader for the project, Mark Scida, said access to the river was a critical design feature. Updates on this project will be available through council’s website on the ‘Current Projects’ page: http://www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/About-Council/Current-projects.

BUSINESS PROFILE
We cleaned up CONGRATULATIONS to all those children, women and men who participated in the Clean up Warburton event on Sunday, 13 March. It was a great success, with lots of rubbish collected. The people of Melbourne should thank you, as it’s their water you have kept clean. The platypuses join in thanking you for your efforts. Kate Barrett and Ben Aldridge, Organisers, Warburton.
Put humans first WHILE reading the draft strategic plan, I couldn’t help but notice that it looks to be the final version and wonder if this community consultation period is a ruse. Will council once again ignore our ideas and sound advice, especially concerning the bushfire risk, in favour of the United Nations Agenda 21 just as it did with the Vision 2020 review debacle? The people of our community must realise just how thoroughly the 'green council’ ruined this shire. We, as a community, have lost our ability to live free because of the multiple layers of plans, regulations and back-room deals that dictate what we can - but mostly what we can’t - do, with each scheme acting as a heavy chain of slavery as per intended. For example, there was a time we could buy a quarter-acre block or less, remove every plant we didn’t want and design the garden of our dreams. Several years ago, when the landscape guidelines plan was being developed, then Cr Samantha Dunn said in a radio interview that she saw no problem with council usurping the use of 80 per cent of our gardens and dictating how it must be landscaped.

The landscape guidelines, developed under the tyrannical 'green council’, states that as much as 100 per cent, but never less than 50 per cent, of all landscape design must be lethal native plants. We are an extreme bushfire risk area and unless our council overhauls or repeals every scheme developed under that wretched green council, our bushfire risk will be a catastrophic code red. Council forgets plants regenerate after bushfires, people don’t. It’s time council and all its minions regard human life above every other consideration. Cait Hoogenbosch, Chum Creek.
Let speech run free US Republican Party front-runner Donald Trump had to call off a rally the other day due to safety concerns brought on by a protest mob from America’s lunatic left. It did put me in mind of what happened here in Australia when my pal Pauline Hansen stood for election back in ’97. The usual rent-a-crowd was called out to demonstrate at all her meetings. There will always be badly behaved folks who try to shout down those with whose opinions they disagree. Not that there is anything wrong when that freedom of speech - which is a cornerstone of any genuine democracy - comes under threat when individuals are demonised for speaking up with inconvenient truths. Inconvenient truths the ‘namby pamby’ dogooders find offensive; the right to take offence is also sacrosanct in a democracy. So, as one philosopher said, ‘whatever floats your boat’. Stanley R. Burgess, Healesville.

Healesville Guardian, 21 March 1936 In Case You Didn’t Know THE Public Works Department has allocated 5000 pounds from unemployment relief works funds for the further development of tourist resorts. Grants apportioned to this district are - Improvement of the Acheron Way between Cement Creek turntable and Narbethong and restoration of scenic walks in the vicinity of Somers Park, 300 pounds. Improvement to the road between Warburton and Panton’s Gap via Mt Donna Buang and Ben Cairn. This road is extensively used in the summer and the section between Warburton and Donna Buang is used more so during the winter and the snow period, 250 pounds. Improvements to snow sports are, Mt Donna Buang to enable people to enjoy snow sports within reasonable reach of the city, 200 pounds. Development and making accessible further scenic points in Marysville district, 200 pounds. Healesville Social Chatter Isn’t it surprising how many visitors are here at present? What with the recent hot spell and the nearness to Easter one would expect the town to be deserted. A fairly close contact with a number of guesthouses during the week has revealed otherwise. Holidaymakers seemed to be everywhere - on the tennis and croquet courts, verandahs, in fact as I said before, everywhere.
‘Between Seasons’ is the holiday period for many of the older folk who do not enjoy the liveliness of Christmas and Easter and the prevailing milder weather should make their stay here the more enjoyable. Warburton Mail, 25 March 1966 Swimming Pool Site is Selected THE Warburton Camping Park has been recommended as the most suitable site for a town swimming pool by Shire Engineer Mr M. Thomas. Mr Thomas said there would be ample room for further development and for parking cars. Record ‘Low’ For Fires Upper Yarra Fire District recorded only seven fires for the 1965-’66 season - with a total of less than 25 acres burnt. Council News Upper Yarra Shire Council has decided to sell its crushing plant. The Warburton and district Baptist Fellowship requested permission to erect a sign, to ‘Baptist Church” on the signpost at the corner of Gillis Street and Warburton Highway Millgrove. The opening of the Baptist Church Millgrove will be held on 19 March. Council agrees to erect a sign “Wesburn Hall and Picnic Area’ on Old Warburton Road signpost on the highway in Wesburn and remove the tip sign. - Contributed by Ellena Biggs

Galeena Beek meeting plan YARRA Ranges councillors have demanded to meet with Aboriginal Affairs Minister, Natalie Hutchins, to discuss the future of the empty Galeena Beek properties in Badger Creek. At a council meeting on Tuesday, 8 March, councillors unanimously agreed to write to Victorian Government ministers, “expressing disappointment” about being unable to secure a meeting. Councillor Fiona McAllister, who moved the urgent motion at the end of the meeting, said there needed to be “some really frank and serious discussions” about the Galeena Beek properties, which have been vacant for years. The Galeena Beek Aboriginal Cultural Centre, opposite Healesville Sanctuary in Badger Creek, was closed in 2000. It was then set for an apartment development around 2008, but the project later went into liquidation. Current discussions for the site include options such as setting up a belonging place, which would act as a civic centre for the Indigenous community. “There have been huge inroads, in terms of Galeena Beek in recent years, and it may not mean anything to many of you,
Doseena Fergie wants to see HICSA and Yarra Ranges Council discuss the Galeena Beek properties with Aboriginal Affairs Minister, Natalie Hutchins. 151771
Picture: JESSE GRAHAM but there is a very united position within the Indigenous community, locally, around those assets, and that is really significant,” Cr McAllister said. Cr Noel Cliff seconded the motion, and said it was an “absolute disgrace” that further meetings with the minister were not set up. Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association (HICSA) chair, Doseena Fergie, told the Mail last week that meetings had been held with Ms Hutchins last year, but that a meeting had not been organised since. “It may be okay for ministers, but we’ve been waiting for
years for this, and therefore, we’re wanting to propel this,” she said. Ms Fergie said she wanted Ms Hutchins to meet with council and Indigenous representatives, and for the Galeena Beek properties to be given back to the community. “We have the support of council, and we would like her to know of our plans out here,” she said. “Here you have properties on Aboriginal land, which is crown land, and why should we buy it back? It should be given to us, because it’s been in a state of disrepair and disregard for so long, and Aboriginal people are waiting, and waiting, and waiting. “There’s an injustice in that, I believe, that properties that could be used aren’t being used.” The Mail contacted the office of Ms Hutchins for a response to the councillors’ comments, and for an update on the discussions around the Galeena Beek properties. “The Victorian Government is currently consulting with the Aboriginal community about a number of proposals for Galeena Beek assets,” a spokesperson for the minister said. “A decision will be made following those discussions."

THE ever-popular push bike ride days at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit are back for Easter. The ride day for Easter is Saturday, 26 March, from 10am to 1pm. There is no need to book, just turn up on the day 30 minutes before the session at the visitors centre to purchase your ticket with your own bike and helmet. Managing director, Fergus Cameron, said it was a fantastic day out. “We were extremely pleased with the amount of riders we had the last time we ran the days over the holidays, so we thought it would be a great opportunity to allow even more people access to the circuit during Easter,” he said. “In fact, it wasn’t only the numbers that pleased us, it was the diversity of groups as well. “We had family groups, older riders, serious riders, fitness fanatics and riding clubs.” Mr Cameron said the track could accommodate all these groups together because it was extremely safe with no cars. Also, it is wide enough for passing and challenging for the fitness fanatics because of its sweeping straights and long demanding undulations. “You won’t break any lap records on the 4.5km circuit,” he said. “However, you will enjoy the safest and most picturesque location to ride your push bike on Phillip Island.” Guests may find it best to arrive early to make the most of their time on this world-famous circuit. So get your bike, helmet, family and friends and head straight to the track. For more information, contact (03) 5952 9400 or visit www.phillipislandcircuit.com.au.

The project that grew
By KATH GANNAWAY
By KATH GANNAWAY A PROJECT that began as a small personal tribute to two World War 2 soldiers, blossomed into a world-wide phenomenon, part of which is on show in Warburton. Lynn Berry and Margaret Knight set out to make 120 poppies for Remembrance Day, 2013, in memory of their fathers. Community interest in the project grew quickly and within two years contributors from toddlers to centenarians around the world, had sent in over 250,000 hand-made poppies in a display of respect and remembrance to those who have served their country in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. “These craft poppies have been ‘planted’ in all manner of war-related sites all over the world, and we are proud to display a representative selection here in Warburton,” said Warburton RSL project co-ordinator, Coral Reynolds. Ms Reynolds said the amazing diversity and creativity of the poppies is astounding. Mounted on eighty 4 metre x 1.2 metre boards, the knitted, crocheted and sewn poppies present a stunning display. “Everyone was given the same idea - just to make a poppy, but to see such a vast diversity in the interpretation, and from so many people, is just wonder-

With an imposing physical presence, Goodman shifts from genial to terrifying on a dime. If the Academy weren’t generally so dismissive toward sci-fi and genre pictures, Goodman could seriously be nominated for an Oscar for his creepy, layered performance in 10 Cloverfield Lane. The film makes outstanding use of the claustrophobic bunker setting for tense, fascinating interactions between its characters. The several twists are well-executed and the consistently unnerving tone is broken up by moments of natural humour. You are constantly questioning whether an attack really did occur, and what Howard the survivalist’s true motives are. The film also has punchy sound design and a deeply

INITIALLY, the directors of ikansleep opened an Australianmade medical mattress manufacturing business, IAA Medical, which was established in October 2003. In April 2009, they expanded the business to include ikansleep P/L as a retail mattress outlet to include leading-brand domestic mattresses and bedding products. Ikansleep has over 45 mattresses in their showroom on display, including brands such as Sealy, Sleepmaker, Therapedic and Protect-a-bed. Given the business’s background in designing aged care and medical bedding, their experience has provided them with excellent insight into the needs of numerous everyday mattress users, especially seniors. Ikansleep pricing is fair and does not over inflate prices, so as to offer an ‘illusion’ of a huge discount. Their vision is to share their profits with people in need. Zero waste to tasty vegies A big chunk of pumpkin
By KATH GANNAWAY WOORI Community House manager, Sonya Mazar, has a simple criteria for the success of their community vegetable gardens. “I just love it when I see schoolkids walking past pick a couple of snow peas, or tomatoes and just eat them fresh from the garden,” she says. The garden is a series of crates between the car park and the footpath, planted out with vegetables and herbs. It’s a permanent display of the innovative approach the house has to sustainable gardening for everyone that includes a zero waste, minimal water and maximum input from nature’s helpers - the worms, chewing insects, microbes and aerobic bacteria. Their secret weapon in establishing the model is local inventor and garden guru, Mike Morrison. His integrated life-cycle food management system includes recycling cardboard packaging and coffee grounds (remember all those cafes in the Yarra Valley!), repurposing cardboard and plastic coffee cups and composting right next to the plants with a re-usable ‘compost hive’. At Woori, the gardens thrive on ‘donations’ from the local shops and businesses who feed their food scraps, teabags and paper into the hives. The hive, and the gardens themselves are mulched with the mix of ground-up cardboard and coffee

On a larger scale, with a major restaurant chain interested in the system, co-grinding food waste and cardboard in the Aximill Processor designed and patented by Mike, has huge potential for the environment. Mike Morrison will demonstrate the gardening system at the Woori Community House Open day on Saturday, 30 April from 10am to 2pm.

IF, like Mia Erickson from Healesville, you’ve grown a big pumpkin lately, Alowyn Gardens in Yarra Glen would like to hear from you! The popular garden and nursery is holding a pumpkin competition on Sunday, 10 April with five classes - Giant Atlantic Pumpkin, Biggest Queensland Blue, Biggest Butternut, Biggest Zucchini and Most Unusual Pumpkin. Alowyn’s Prue Van de Linde said they purchased seeds in October last year and put together growing packs for sale to the public. Seeds were also sold through the local Hoogies Hardware. Mia, 9, has been nurturing her pumpkin from seed to flower to this beautiful, orange specimen since late last year, and can’t wait to take it along for the competition. Ms Van de Linde said it was time for the pumpkins to come home. “A large number of growing packs were purchased and we are now calling all pumpkin growers to enter their pumpkins (and zucchinis) in our competi-

Underground House digs deep By JESSE GRAHAM The front of the underground house.
The Steels Creek Underground House fits into the hill behind it, and sits next to a large dam. 151735
AFTER the 2009 bushfires destroyed their Steels Creek home, Edd and Amanda Williams set to work creating a masterpiece - an underground house where practicality and sustainability are at the forefront. The Underground House is located deep in Steels Creek, down winding dirt roads and a long driveway, far away from mobile phone reception. Coming around the corner, the house’s chimneys and Solatubes poke out of a hill - the front, north-facing side of the house, meanwhile, sits forward and unobscured. Behind a set of double-glazed windows is a small (and hot) room full of tropical plants, and another set of double-glazed windows that leads to the kitchen and into the house proper. Edd, seated in an armchair in the cool house - it’s 30 degrees outside, and significantly hotter in the room with the plants - explained that the room is designed to help regulate the heat in the underground house. “We open this up in winter, in the day time, and the heat from there comes in here, and at night we close it up,” he said. “This time of the year, when it’s really hot outside, we keep these closed all day, and we open up at night - by moving these doors open and shut at different times of the day, you control the temperature inside the house.” He said the house was designed by their son, Soft Loud House Architects’ Alvyn Williams, after the family’s house was burnt down during the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

Natural light is well-utilised in the underground house. Amanda said the decision to go underground was made during the long drought, where water was scarce and the panic of the fire season made the area like a “war zone”. “I had a ‘what would I do?’ scenario - if I was alive, and my family was alive, but the house was burnt,” she said. “In that case, I said, well, next time, I’ll build underground - instead of spending every summer and every time I went shopping watching the horizon.” The attention to detail in the finished house shows - the couple said the width of the kitchen was designed so that, in winter, the sun hits the back wall.

Edd and Amanda Williams in their underground house in Steels Creek. 151735
In summer, the light barely makes it past the windows. Edd said the house was built “like a carpark”, with solid concrete for the walls and roof. This, he said, gives the house a thermal mass which uses the soil around the house to cool and heat the house naturally. Vents running from the surface provide cool air, even on warmer days. The house is powered by solar panels, which return so much power to the grid that money from energy companies offset the price of buying wood for the stove and gas for an underground cylinder. When it comes to bushfire safety, the house is well-equipped with a
moat running around the property, a large dam nearby, fire-resistant materials and perspex covering the Solatubes that bring light to the rear rooms of the house. The area around the house is cleared to stop the approach of fire and a small ‘cave’ is attached to the house as an escape from radiant heat. Another benefit of being underground, Edd said, is that the house is also sound-proofed, and maintenance is as simple as walking outside and up the hill. “If people next door have a party, we don’t even know,” he said. “They say ‘we hope we weren’t too noisy last night’, and we say ‘what?’” The house has been featured on
“So you have that reaction, like it doesn’t feel like a proper house and then there are one or two people who drive away and try to do something similar.” The couple document some of their living experience via their Facebook Page, Underground House, Steels Creek, including some odd moments, such as finding a wombat hole on top of their house. television shows in the past and is also included in an exhibition running until 15 May at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in Lilydale. Amanda said that underground houses were “slightly more expensive” to build than regular houses in the beginning and that sites needed to be suited to the project, such as having a slope and a north-facing area for the frontage. She said the reaction to the house had been mixed, but had inspired others. “A lot of people come into the ‘I wish’ or ‘idealistic’, some people come into the category of the older people ‘I don’t know how you live in a house that’s so different’,” she said.

Just married, 1972. Their whole lives ahead of them. 151880
At nine - St John the Baptist at Ferntree Gully. 151880
Those precious lives lost IN 2006 I stood at my brother Peter’s graveside in Ferntree Gully and delivered a eulogy. Peter was killed on the Wednesday leading up to Easter, 1975. He was 25 and I was 23. There was a reason, a couple in fact, why we gathered as a family 31 years later to say our ‘goodbyes’. Easter was always a special time for our family. Apart from the religious aspects, it was a time to be together as a family, and always at mum and dad’s - our family home. By then our family of seven kids included almost as many brothers and sisters-in-law, and two beautiful grandchildren, including Peter and Vicki’s two-year-old daughter Kelly - so it was always fun, and always a bit chaotic. Peter was one of 910 people who died on Victoria’s roads that year and although he wasn’t technically an “Easter statistic”, Easter became the ‘anniversary’. It didn’t really matter whether it fell
in March or April - it was just always the Wednesday before Easter. My parents, Mick and Mary, got the knock on the door. Poor policeman. Probably someone they knew, because everyone knew everyone in Ferntree Gully at that time. I can’t remember. But I know it changed their lives, and all our lives. “Your son has been killed in a truck accident.” They would have called it an accident then - not a crash. He was driving interstate for a transport company and like so many young truckies - married young with a family, he wanted to provide a home and get his own truck. He drove long hours, because that’s what was demanded. He fell asleep on an overnight back from Adelaide and crashed in the Pentland Hills near Bacchus Marsh. Not that far from home really. Now, we have the signs ‘Fatigue kills’ ... ‘Drowsy drivers die’. He would have just been wanting to get
home to Vicki and Kelly, the apple of his eye. I was working in Melbourne. Two colleagues broke the news - Bob Chalk and Bruce Mainka. I’ve never forgotten their names. That afternoon was surreal. Because of the Easter break, Peter’s funeral was the next day. Easter Thursday. You wouldn’t do that now. I have no memory of it at all, and with no time to process such an enormous loss, it never really felt real. For years, it was like it never really happened. And that, along with Kelly’s wish to say ‘goodbye’ to the dad she never knew, was one of the reasons for the late eulogy. Life does go on with all the things that happen - more grandchildren, nieces and nephews, first days at school, weddings, 18ths and 21sts, Christmases, family holidays, and mum and dad’s passing, and, of course, Collingwood grand finals. Through it all, you never complete-
My 21st, celebrating with mum, dad and little sister Colleen. I love that he has his hand around Col. 151880 ly stop missing that person, wishing they were here to share all the good times, and the bad. As each milestone is celebrated, you wonder what Peter would have made of it. What would he be like now as a ‘Pa’ to Kelly’s little daughter, Ally. So, it’s Easter again, and even
though the road toll has been reduced enormously since 1975, there’s every chance that some other average family, just like ours, will get that knock on the door that will change the meaning of Easter forever. There’s no-one someone won’t miss. 1220757-KK12-16

Working alarms call WITH the end of daylight savings just over a week away, residents are being reminded to change the batteries on their smoke alarms and ensure they’re working. Coldstream CFA posted a reminder on its Facebook page last week, reminding residents to change the batteries in their alarm, and to keep them well-maintained and safe, at the end of daylight savings on Sunday 3 April. The brigade said that smoke alarms should be dusted monthly, replaced every 10 years and that batteries should be replaced at the end of every daylight savings period. The reminder comes as part of the Change Your Clock, Change Your Smoke Alarm Battery campaign, so that when residents change their clocks, they remember to get new batteries for their smoke alarm. The CFA’s website said alarms could be dusted with vacuum cleaner attachments, and should be tested once a month - working alarms
should produce four loud beeps when pressed. “Waiting until the smoke alarm beeps before you change the battery is too late - this indicates that the battery is already flat, and your family is not protected,” the website read. “Change your smoke alarm battery every year.” Smoke alarms are used to wake up occupants of houses when smoke fills the air. When hearing an alarm, getting down low under the smoke and crawling to safety is important. “House fires occur more frequently during the winter months, and making sure you go into winter with a working smoke alarm makes good sense,” the CFA website said. Residents who are hearing impaired can purchase special smoke alarms that feature a flashing strobe light and a vibrating pad, which can be put under pillows to alert them. For more information about smoke alarms and fire safety, visit www.cfa. vic.gov.au.
Smoke alarm batteries should be replaced once a year, while alarms should be dusted once a month and replaced every 10 years. 151799 Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Back-to-back Tigers By PETER DOUGLAS and CHRIS ANDERSON WOORI Yallock is celebrating backto-back D.J. Strachan Shield victories in the Yarra Valley Cricket Association after disposing of a brave Healesville on Sunday 20 March. In what has been another pristine year for the talented Tigers’ line-up, the big-guns helped get the job done on a large, slow and rain-affected oval at Coldstream. Unfortunately for Healesville, the victory puts end to what would have been a fairytale victory for the Bloods. The grand final represented the first chance at premiership glory in around 30 years, as well as a fantastic turnaround after coming from the bottom of the ladder in recent seasons. On a slow track, Healesville batted first and managed to patiently notch up a respectable score of all-out for 143. However, even after overnight rain on the Saturday, the Tigers’ star batsmen shone on the big stage. Run machine Dan Mock compiled 43 while Ryan Smith, 50, helped to chase down the runs. For the Bloods, Dermott Fry gave his all, grabbing 4/43 from 24 overs. The Tigers passed the target in the 70th over, with seven wickets down, sparking celebrations as the classy outfit claimed their second premiership in as many seasons. D.J. WARBURTON GOLF WEDNESDAY REX Ryan proved his good recent form was no fluke as he was able to amass 37 points to win the day's stableford. His playing partner, Max Carvill, claimed the runner-up prize with 35. The ball rundown went to 33. NTPs went to ‘Senior’ Cross (3rd), and Rex claimed both the 9th and the 17th to round off a most successful day for him. TWILIGHT In one of his last rounds of golf at Warburton, before his family re-locate to Queensland, young tyro Django Ward amassed a superb 25 points to win the night easily. Three points behind Django, on 22, Stan Slusarek claimed the runner-up title. Balls went down to 17. NTPs went to Mez (12th), Steve Noonan (13th) and Gary Ward on the 15th, proving that Django is not the only star golfer in the Ward family! SATURDAY Due to a smaller field competing, there was only one grade awarded. In a stunning performance, Roger Mataele scored a +9 to completely blitz the competition. Showing what good scoring was happening on the day, the ball run-down only extended to +1! NTPs went to Gary Ward (3rd), Kev Conway (9th), A. Patrick (12th) and Geoff Hall (15th).

BY RUSSELL COLVIN THREE Bridges’ Daniel ‘Chucky’ Sanders finally broke through for his first ever overall outright victory in the two opening rounds of the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) last weekend at Kilkivan, 224 kilometres north of Brisbane. Round one on Saturday marked Sanders’s 35th AORC race start in his career, which saw the KTM OffRoad Team young gun claim the outright win beating Lachlan Stanford by 4.197sec in a six-lap sprint style format race. In testing conditions - a rough and rocky track and having to battle against the 35-plus degree heat Sanders, who finished fourth in last year’s outright championship said it was definitely a tough day. “I knew that it was going to be the same sorts of tracks as last year,
got the nod by .999sec. Not only was Sanders victorious in the outright class, but he took the spoils the E3 category (300cc500cc) as well. “It’s a great feeling to be able to come here this weekend and walk away with two outright round wins,” Sanders told the Upper Yarra Mail straight after the race. “All the hard work and training during the off-season is paying off. I can’t thank my team enough for supplying me with the best KTM 300EXC to go out there and race with. It’s a team effort, so this is their victory as much as it is mine.” Sanders explained that the first two rounds last weekend had given him a big “confidence booster” heading into round three and four, which will take place at Portland in NSW on 9-10 April.
so I knew what to expect,” said Sanders who finished with a total time of 46min00.731sec. “To get my first outright win done and dusted has been a goal of mine which I wanted to do this season. This a real big confidence booster leading into tomorrow.” The 21-year-old kept his winning performance going into the second round on Sunday, also another sprint style race. However he started off a bit slow in the first few sprints after trying to find the correct lines and get into a rhythm. It wasn’t until the fifth run that Sanders finally took command of the pack, taking the lead away from New South Wales’ Josh Green, the early pace setter. Green threw everything he had at Sanders in the last sprint, but it wasn’t quite enough, and Sanders
While Sanders may have snared the opening two rounds, he knows he has a long 2016 season ahead of him with another 10 rounds to go, and he says he still has to keep training to be at the peak of his game. “It’s a nice feeling to win, but we still have to keep pushing as hard as possible and readjust our goals during the course of the year,” he said. “I’ll keep training as hard as I can when I get back home and look towards the next two rounds at the beginning of April and we’ll see what we can do there. “This championship looks like it could be one of the hardest yet I dare say.” The top 5 Outright Championship line up after two rounds is Daniel Sanders (50); Josh Green (42); Lachlan Standford (42); Tye Simmonds (34) and Beau Ralston (33).
