VIDEO LINK – Watch Marie Bennetti speaking about the diary theft at cranbourne.starcommunity.com.au
War diary looted By GEORGIA WESTGARTH MARIE Bennetti vividly remembers sitting by her father’s side listening to his tales of survival as a prisoner of war. Those memories are all she has left, after thieves ransacked her Cannons Creek home, making off with her father’s war diary. Thieves stripped the family of close to $30,000 worth of jewellery and collectables, but it’s a small paperback POW diary, belonging to English WWII veteran, Robert Irwin, that keeps Marie up at night. “Dad always said it was the ‘notepad’ as he called it, that kept him going, once he escaped the Italian prisoner of war camp,” Marie said. The Bennetti family were in the midst of moving house when their Bluff Road property in Cannons Creek was targeted. “It’s so cruel,” Marie said of the break-in. “My dad’s war diary is of no use to them and what hurts the most is the thought that they have thrown it away in the bin, because it doesn’t belong there.” Marie had kept her father’s POW diary in a safe in her bedroom, along with his infirmary logbook and wartime ID documents. “They don’t know the significance of what was in that plastic bag and they wouldn’t care - in hindsight I should have given his diary to a museum,” Marie said. Robert Irwin was a soldier in the Green Howards Yorkshire Regiment, a part of the King’s Division of the British Army. Fittingly, he died in Redcar, England the home of the Green Howards, in 1983. Their flag was draped over his coffin.
Marie Bennetti with an old photograph of her father, Robert, and mother, Bella. After more than a month since the break-in, Marie says she still can’t sleep and has sought medical advice to deal with the stress and shock of the burglary, which stripped her of her most treasured memories. 151789 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
With six siblings, Marie felt honoured after her mother, Bella, gave her the treasured family heirloom 15 years ago. “My Mum gave it to me because I lived in Australia, Mum said that Dad
would have wanted me to have it, because my youngest sister and I would sit on the floor next to his chair and listen to him read stories from his diary,” Marie said. “Mum would cook him up a whole
chicken of a Sunday afternoon and he’d give us a chicken wing each - I still love the taste of a chicken wings today.” Robert Irwin suffered inside two POW camps from the age of 23, during
his two stints at war. But it was his Italian escape which was lucky enough to be documented with a pad and pencil. “His diary would have originally been about 50 pages long and it detailed his survival through what he called ‘Toscana’ and that he ate frogs, took refuge in a barn and hid from the owners where he ate the chickens' eggs,” Marie said. The Bennetti family, who had called Cannons Creek home for four years, now reside in Junction Village and said they had taken their eyes off their home for one night, on Wednesday 3 February. “My son had been in a car accident and wrote his car off - we were taking care of him at our new home when we were burgled,” Marie said. “I don’t care about the coin collection, the stamps or my jewellery - just my dad’s diary, you can’t put a price on it, you can’t replace what’s in it. “Dad told us his notepad was his connection to home while at war, he was hoping he could use it to help us relate to what he had been through and understand his bouts of malaria.” Robert Irwin had sketched the Green Howards crest in his diary, with his wife’s name, Bella, etched in it, which was photographed by his local newspaper in north-east England upon his return from war. “I’m heartbroken and I just want it back - my most treasured item was that diary, nothing has a value to me anymore and I’m selling off anything of worth to me because I’d rather do that than have it stolen,” Marie said. Anyone with information about the break-in or on the diary’s whereabouts is urged to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000 or drop the diary in to an RSL branch.

Council has made the responsible decision to apply for a rate cap variation of 0.97%, or $14 per household, to enable key infrastructure projects to continue to meet the needs of Casey’s growing community. After signalling its intent to seek a variation in January, the City of Casey has now submitted its application to the Essential Services Commission (ESC) to vary the 2.5% cap being imposed on Councils by 0.97%. Council has a detailed 10-year mOBODJBM QMBO JO QMBDF UP NFFU changing service demands, but the imposed rate cap will effectively leave a $168 million shortfall over this period alone. Drive offs slammed AN independent petrol director has slammed a state parliamentary report for not recognising fuel drive offs as a crime. Peter Anderson, of Apro Service Stations, says each of his servos including two in Cranbourne - loses about $12,000 a year in unpaid-for fuel. And that cost is growing, he says. Casey is the second hardest-hit municipality for petrol drive-offs in the state - more than 3000 in the past 10 years, according to official crime stats. However, industry representatives claim the offences are vastly under-reported. Mr Anderson said it was disappointing that the Law Reform, Road
and Community Safety Committee’s report released today didn’t make the “tough decisions”. “This is all too hard for governments to do anything about.” According to Victorian crime statistics, more than 80 per cent of reported drive-offs are unsolved in the past 10 years. The report did not rule on a Victoria Police 2013 directive not to pursue drive-offs because they were civil matters, not crimes. The report stated there were evidentiary problems including proving an ‘offender’ intended to steal petrol, and hadn’t simply forgotten to pay. “Everyone I talk to says it’s a theft,” Mr Anderson said. “This inquiry has done nothing about it.”
Servo representatives told the inquiry that the police stance fuelled further drive-offs. Mr Anderson said it could also cause frustrated servo attendants to “take matters in their own hands”. “The police are only interested in protecting their stats,” Mr Anderson said. “If they can take (drive-offs) out of the crime stats, it doesn’t look as bad.” Mr Anderson called for on-thespot fines, which would reduce court time and act as a practical deterrent. The committee however stated infringements would be “inappropriate”. It would reduce the deterrence value of the criminal law - which
punishes theft with up to 10 years’ jail - and was unlikely to reduce the offence, it stated. The report’s recommendations included investigating fuel prepayment options, and for servos to access a database on stolen vehicles and number-plates with numberplate scanning/recognition technology. RACV public policy general manager Brian Negus, who proposed this idea to the inquiry, said the technology could allow servo attendants to “shut down the pump” if a stolen vehicle or one with stolen plates arrives. Mr Negus also didn’t support the police directive. “If you go into the store and steal milk or brake fluid, you’re prosecuted. Stealing fuel is no different.”
Four survive Tooradin airfield plane crash By GEORGIA WESTGARTH and JARROD POTTER
Runaway caravan just misses home A HAMPTON Park family had a lucky escape early Sunday morning when a runaway caravan narrowly missed their home. Police are trying to locate the owner of the large caravan, which they believe may have been stolen. The caravan, which is 35 feet (10 metres) in length, consists of four separate bedrooms and a shower block. Police believe the van became unattached from its towing vehicle and travelled about 100 metres before smashing through a front fence and coming to rest meters from a family home on Pound Road. Police are trying to identify the owners of the van, believing that it may have been stolen. Investigators have released an image of the caravan in the hope that someone may recognise it.
Repeat offender A 22-YEAR-OLD Narre Warren man has been arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting two different female employees at the same clothing store within 24 hours. Police allege the man entered the clothing store on Little Bourke Street, in Melbourne’s CBD, on Friday 18 December and sexually assaulted an employee. The same man is then alleged to have attended the same store the next night and sexually assaulted another female staff member. It’s alleged the man returned to the store a third time, on Friday 4 March, and fondled his genitals through his clothes. He has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of offensive behaviour.

THREE adults and a child involved in a plane crash at Tooradin miraculously escaped with a few bruises. It was a coastal flight that almost ended in tragedy on Sunday 20 March at the Tooradin Airfield. Four survivors including a fiveyear-old girl were treated at the scene around 1pm, when the new model Cessna 182T, named ‘Skylane’, crashed upon landing. Wings and Fins owner, Nola DeLorenzo was just metres away from the airfield at her restaurant, when the plane hit four other parked aircrafts. “I heard the bang and scraping metal, but didn’t see it,” the Hotplate, reality TV star said. “I looked out and people were just running towards the plane, we had a private function on and nurses here all ran down to help.” High winds buffeting the airfield are thought to have contributed to the crash. Ms DeLorenzo said emergency services were quick to arrive at the scene, as there were fears the plane could have exploded on the tarmac. “It was chaotic for a few hours, I was the coffee run girl for everybody,” she said. “That’s the second accident at the airfield I’ve been present forthe other small crash was about 12 months ago.” The half-a-million dollar Cessna light aircraft twisted and folded in half and struck three other aircrafts as it came to a halt. Those on board, a man in his fifties, 31-year-old woman, a man in his twenties and a five-year-old girl were taken to Frankston Hospital

Circle of harmony BANDING together in a circle of harmony, students at Lynbrook Primary School performed and dressed up for the cultural day of celebration. Harmony Day was represented through a series of stories on Monday 21 March, as a sea of orange students leapt back in time. Grade 2 teacher, Laura Hill, said the message of the day was about “all cultures living in harmony.”
“We had 100 singers, actors and readers performing a timeline of Australia’s significant events at assembly and students created a circular stage for the performance,” Ms Hill said. The school’s 970 students which represent 22 different cultures, dressed up in either orange, the colour of the day, or in attire significant to their heritage. “I taught my class about how different cultures celebrate,” Ms Hill said.

DETECTIVES believe that would-be thieves set a car ablaze at Merinda Park train station after failing to steal it. The blue Nissan Pulsar was reported on fire about 4.30am on Monday 21 March, with the blaze causing extensive damage to the car. Police believe the person involved tried to break into the car to steal it, because it had moved a short distance, but after their failed attempt the would-be thief allegedly set the car on fire.

Cranny trains peak By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE peak train services reliability hit an all-time low in February. Monthly data from Public Transport Victoria revealed just 85 per cent of peak Cranbourne services ran on time last month, which makes February the worst month for Cranbourne commuters in more than a year. Just a month earlier 88 per cent of trains were recorded as arriving and departing on time from Cranbourne. Greens South-East Metro MP, Nina Springle has slammed the re-
cord low results. “Cranbourne line performance has plummeted over the past 12 months,“ Ms Springle said. “Most of these delays are preventable. Train networks around the world manage to avoid cancellations and late running, but locally Metro and the government just make excuses.” Daily train commuter, Mandy Galvin, has travelled the Cranbourne line to work in Melbourne’s CBD for 14 years and has labelled Cranbourne the “most disappointing train line.” “I don’t believe 15 per cent of Cranbourne trains were late last
month - that’s an underestimation,” Ms Galvin said. “It’s about 60 per cent on time to 40 per cent late.” Ms Galvin, a Cranbourne resident, has had to alter her morning routine significantly over the past 14 years to deal with Cranbourne’s unreliable train services. “The Cranbourne line often gets dumped at Dandenong on my commute home, where we have to wait for another train. “I used to give myself an hour and a half to get to work, now I have to give myself at least two hours,” she said. Ms Galvin said Cranbourne’s

morning trains seem to run on time, however the evening commute can be “horrendous”. “They need to run a second line along here because having a single train line means if one is late on one end, the other has to wait and it causes delays, it’s not very well managed,” she said. Cranbourne resident, Daniel Garlick, echoed Ms Galvin’s opinion, saying “Cranbourne commuters get a bad deal compared to every other train line.” “I catch the train to university four days a week and in that week I will have to deal with two trains running late,” he said.

JUST to let Mayor Sam Aziz know it has been three weeks since I wrote to this paper so I want you to understand I am not obsessed with you, and to let you know I don’t write weekly about you. I want to mention your words (broken record syndrome ) which you tell the Casey residents and Ratepayers Association on many of your rants. You tell us we the ratepayers need to have rate increases. Well, I will tell you we don’t. Where is the money the developers pay council when they build new estates? Is there money placed into the budget or does it get put away for a rainy day? $14 a year sounds cheap when you just say it that way, but when you add it to your rates of a few thousand dollars it is a lot. I have been out and about in Casey and people ask me, I thought the mayor was joining you on your door knocking walk. See mayor, the residents hear you but don’t see you. Now where have I heard that before? Rex Flannery, Narre Warren South.
I FIND it very interesting indeed that Casey Mayor Sam Aziz has time to attend a community meeting that would no doubt have also been attended by Donald Trump supporters and the Klu Klux Klan if it was held in the United States at this time (Call For Respect, News, 17 March). Cr Aziz is willing to meet with anti-mosque protesters but he has no time to meet with individuals, such as myself, who want to put forward ideas and strategies that would allow Casey council to function within the rates cap of 2.5 per cent next financial year without slashing essential services. The real problem that needs to be looked at here is the issue of evidence. There is absolutely no evidence that mosques have only a negative impact on their communities. Mayor Sam Aziz and Casey council also have absolutely no evidence that any rates capping at 2.5 per cent will equate to slashing essential services (Council Applies To Blow Out Rates Cap, News, 11 March). Casey’s policies should be influenced by facts and evidence not emotion or prejudice. Casey residents and ratepayers have a
clear choice. We can demand that policies be driven by evidence and logic or we can allow the future of this municipality to be determined by fear and ignorance. Cr Sam Aziz is not providing Casey residents with leadership by appealing to the latter instead of the former. Casey’s future depends on transparency and a capacity for finding alternatives to the ideas of Donald Trump and the Klan. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.
Taxi's rank AS READERS would be aware, the taxi service has been taken over by 13 CABS. My husband had an important appointment at Monash Hospital, Clayton. I called the above number operator and waited 15 minutes. Nothing. Dialled again, another 15 minute wait. Nothing. So had to ring and cancel the appointment. As they have taken over such a large, important business, their performance should be better, not worse. Rosemary Grohnert, Narre Warren.

I am reading their budget for the 2015/2016 period and I note that there are a number of things that should be pointed out.... and would be better if the council answer them directly, In rates and charges they received the following amounts 14/15 = $177mil, (14/15 forecast 177mil), and 15/16 188mil giving them an 10 million increase the other income and grants issued have not changed very much, as you can see below. I note that the employee expenses jump from 84mil in 14/15 to 93mil in 15/06. Why was this? There has been not a lot of hiring? So would this have been a pay increase of 9.95 per cent for that period? Mark Mathews via Facebook Just a joke. It’s probably the biggest reason they are accepting the mosque in narree imagine the money the council will make on all applications, further government grants based on religion and ongoing rate costs. It’s all about the bottom line. Nicki Van Riel via Facebook

What BS. Mine increased to $1834 for the year. I understand we need to pay rates to get certain things done but, bloody hell, they just put the rates up last financial year and yet they feel they can get more money from people? I pay every three months and it’s still a lot of money. Rebecca Blackmore via Facebook Before upping the rates, clean up the gardens in Botanic Ridge which are over grown with weeds, dead bushes and fallen trees… and litter in between… You planted them, now maintain them!! City of Casey is a greedy council. Wendy Pearce-Morgan via Facebook Are they kidding, we already pay some of the most expensive rates! $2200 annually in Berwick South. Just greedy! Lisa Hansen via Facebook Enough is enough. If they want to provide better services for us then they should stop wasting our money on crap. How much have they spent on holidays (sorry, research trips). How about they do the research on line, we should show them how to use Google, Skype, Viber. They don’t have to pay for training, my six-year-old can show them
how easy it is. My rates have gone from $600 in 2006 to $1600. Violeta Atanasovska via Facebook I’ve lived in Cranbourne for 25 years and I paid $250 for the year and my wages take home pay was $300! Today I pay $1300 and take home pay $680! How does the council justify that! Ruth Rickard via Facebook Disproportionate, greedy and grandiose City of Casey. This is not Toorak or Ashburton. Gayle Maree Stapelton via Facebook Re: Police chief hits back at Apex attacks I’m sick of the racist card used all the time. IT’S not every day that an evening meal is disrupted by a copperhead snake, but that was the case for members of one Cranbourne South family on Tuesday night when they were forced to swap their salad tongs for snake tongs! Snake Catcher Victoria’s Barry Goldsmith said the juvenile copperhead snake would have been brought in by the cat. “If you let cats roam they will bring snakes inside,” Mr Goldsmith said. The Cranbourne mother spoke to 3AW Breakfast show hosts Ross and John on air about the evening visit, saying her toddler daughter notified them of the snake. “My three-year-old daughter found it. She came running in saying ‘snake, snake, snake’. “Our first reaction was she’s a bit if a storyteller and shouldn’t make up things like that up... but sure enough it was a juvenile snake,” she told 3AW listeners. But Mr Goldsmith said copperhead snakes are “our friends”. “They are misunderstood,” he said. “Copperhead snakes are not so dangerous, they have never killed anybody in Australia and they eat tiger snakes.” Mr Goldsmith said he caught four adult copperhead snakes throughout the southeast region on Wednesday 16 March and one on a Botanic Ridge property. A PHOTOGRAPHER and reporter from Star News had a taste of history this week. The pair was invited for a tour of Doveton Heights Cottage, a special historic home

GREAT things come in threes at Doveton. Last week Myuna Farm’s much-loved boar goat, Ivory, gave birth to rare kid triplets. The two black female goats and one white male goat were born about 3.45pm on Wednesday 16 March, after a complicated labour which lasted 48 hours. River Gum Ward Councillor Wayne Smith dropped by Myuna Farm to meet the latest additions, who can be viewed every day between 10am and 4pm at the farm. Visitors will be able to cuddle and pet the kid goats in about two weeks. For more information, visit www.facebook. com/MyunaFarm. once owned by Captain John Doveton, after whom the suburb is named. A well-known local realtor, who is helping the owner sell the house, was more than happy to have the Star News contingent come and check out the landmark house.
CASEY Central Shopping Centre had just about everything, except the kitchen sink, to help staff officially open the centre on Thursday 17 March. There were trumpets, indigenous dance and didgeridoo too! Thousands flocked to the Narre Warren retail hub as cars lined surrounding streets. Eager shoppers embraced the discounts and freebies on offer and kids show, Paw Patrol, brought out the prams! A NARRE Warren business is again doing its bit to raise money on Good Friday. Lollipop’s Playland Fountain Gate will run another family fun day on Good Friday this year with all proceeds going towards the Good Friday Appeal. The event will include raffle prizes, gift bags, giveaways, face-painting and more. A number of local businesses will also be throwing their support behind the fund-raiser. This year all seven Victorian Lollipop play centres will be donating to the cause, with a collective target of $60,000.

Road of pain CASEY has recorded the second-most road deaths in Victoria in the last decade. There were 17 road fatalities reported in Casey from 2006 to 2015, with a motorcyclist death in Cranbourne last week adding to the fast climbing 2016 road toll. Casey was ranked second alongside Hume and Brimbank, while Baw Bar and East Gippsland topped the list on 19 fatalities, from 2006 to 2015. There have been 23 motorcyclists killed in Victoria this year, nine of whom allegedly did not have a valid licence, bringing the state’s road toll to 76 - 16 fatalities higher than this time last year. Last Tuesday 15 March, a Narre Warren man died in a motorcycle crash in Cranbourne West. Police say the 58-year-old man was riding west on Central Parkway, about 4.20pm, when he crashed. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The TAC last week issued a safety plea ahead of the Easter
long weekend, in the wake of the state’s rising road toll. “Weekends like Easter see a lot of people getting out and seeing different parts of the state, and many are travelling longer distances than they are accustomed to and on roads that they are not familiar with," TAC senior road safety manager Samantha Cockfield said. “When you add drowsiness into the mix, it can be a tragic recipe.“ This month’s fatality in Cranbourne West is one of a string of tragic road deaths in Casey over the last 10 years. Last month, Star News spoke with Bob Halsall, a former Casey Councillor, who witnessed a horror car crash in Lynbrook in 2008. He was sitting in his own car at the stop lights at the Lynbrook Boulevard and South Gippsland Highway intersection when a truck ran a red light and hit a car in March 2008, claiming the lives of two boys, 6 and 9. Eight years later, safety concerns are still being raised about the site, with Casey Council
urging the community to participate in a recently closed VicRoads survey regarding the notorious intersection. Last year, more than 6000 people signed an online petition for a roundabout to be built at a notorious Pearcedale intersection where two people died in five years. The most recent fatality there was last May, when 19-year-old Olivia Steadman-Meconi lost her life in a multi-car crash. Cranbourne’s Emma Lowen knows what it’s like to live the nightmare of losing a teenage daughter to the road toll. On 28 June 2009, Emma’s 16-year-old daughter, Riyani, was killed in a two-car collision at the intersection of Hallam and Ormond roads, which also claimed the lives of fellow Narre Warren South P-12 College student Anja Miller, 15, and friend Joel Brimble, 19. A fortnight later as she drove past a roadside memorial erected for the lost teenagers, a 21-year-old woman was killed instantly when her car was hit by a B-double truck at the same intersection.

Thompsons Road battle THOMPSONS Road continues to be a key battleground for Victoria’s major political parties. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy visited the road in Cranbourne along with South Eastern Metropolitan MP Gordon Rich-Phillips on Thursday 17 March, again criticising the Andrews Government for not fully funding its duplication. Last year the Opposition slammed the government for allocating only $20.5 million in the 2015 State Budget to duplicate Thompsons Road, despite promising $175 million for the upgrade prior to the election. “We’re calling on the government to fully fund the upgrade of Thompsons Road in the upcoming Budget,” Mr Guy said. “They’ve now got the money. The Coalition, the Liberal and National Parties have given them the money through the port sale in particular,” Mr Guy said. “This is a major access road, it was a promised that the government would begin work on upgrading Thompsons Road nearly, well in fact more than 12 months ago - nothing’s happened. “He’s said that there’ll be a duplication that will happen, he said 12 months ago that it would be beginning, that it

would start; now nothing’s happened.” Mr Guy also said the impending closure of Abbotts Road, reported by Star News recently, would see traffic conditions become even worse on Thompsons Road. “If the government closes the Abbotts Road level crossing, and doesn’t eliminate that level crossing through an underground like they should, you are going to see traffic grow exponentially on Thompsons Road, adding to already disastrous traffic conditions in the morning,” Mr Guy said. But Roads Minister Luke Donnellan, also the MP for Narre Warren North, was quick to hit back at the Opposition leader, claiming that the Liberal Party “never invested a single dollar on Thompsons Road”
while in office. “In our first Budget, we began the vital work to duplicate Thompsons Road so local residents can spend more time with their families and less time stuck in traffic,” Mr Donnellan said. “Unlike the former Liberal Government who talked about action, we’re getting on with building the infrastructure that our community needs. “We’re also getting on with widening the Monash which will provide smoother, safer and more reliable travel for up to 200,000 motorists from Melbourne’s South East a day. “Upgrading the Monash will save up to 10 minutes, remove the current frustrating chokepoints and reduce serious crashes by 20 per cent.”

Dishing up the delights of life By GEORGIA WESTGARTH SHE’S a local girl with a heart of gold ... and Nola DeLorenzo hates being labelled a celebrity. Because when she’s not filling fridges, mopping floors and washing dishes, Nolsy as she’s known, is making sure her regular customers, always get a seat at her Tooradin restaurant, Wings and Fins. Since appearing on Channel Nine’s cooking show, the ‘Hotplate’, Nolsy has made a point of sticking by the locals who have, and always will stick by her. “There was a local rumour going around during the Hotplate that we were booked out for three months in advance and that the locals couldn’t get a table,” Nolsy said. “I didn’t want my regulars to miss out.” So Nolzy did what she says any good business owner would - make fake bookings! “I didn’t tell my staff, but I would make bookings in fake names so that if a regular or local walked in or called for a table I’d have one for them,” she said. “Because that’s what you have to do in business, look after your regulars and the locals appreciated it.” But busy they were. After the first episode went to air, the Wings and Fins website and message bank crashed. “We didn’t realise the phones could only take 49 messages so we had to up our plan and fix the website - it was hilarious,” Nolsy said. The fun, country mum was made famous around Australia, for her loveable antics and for her fresh flown in

But the attention on Tooradin hasn’t just heated up Nolsy’s kitchen. “Sales are definitely up because of the Hotplate spotlight, we are busy all
CRANBOURNE kids helped Premier Daniel Andrews kick off his state-wide reading challenge this month. Students at Cranbourne East Primary School were joined by the Premier, Cranbourne MP Jude Perera and Education Minister James Merlino on Wednesday 16 March as they started their six-month reading challenge. Participating students from Prep to Year 2 will be required to read 30 books, while students in Years 3 to 10 are encouraged to read 15.
the time but when people can’t get in here they go to Tides Bar and Grill down the road, so it’s been great for the whole community and Kooweerup as well,” Nolsy said. “So many people didn’t know where Tooradin was, including a lot of local people from Pakenham and Berwick and they’re coming in as well. “I received an email from another Tooradin business owner saying thank you for putting Tooradin on the map and that part of it has been really good.”
Mr Perera said the initiative aimed to encourage children to read more books, more often. “Reading is a vital skill and the Premier's Reading Challenge is a simple, effective way for young Victorians to discover the joy of a good book, and establish life-long reading habits,” Mr Perera said. “It’s great to see the enthusiasm that Cranbourne East Primary School students have for taking up the challenge to read more.”

Community is cashing in By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CLYDE North residents have operated a small community centre out of a display home in Selandra Rise for three years, but $2.5 million from the Victorian Interface Growth Fund will soon change all that. Minister for Local Government, Natalie Hutchins, announced the grant towards the construction of a $5 million, Selandra Integrated Community Centre, in Clyde North on Monday 21 March. The City of Casey is matching the grant money of $2.5 million, using a combination of rates and developer contributions and hopes to have construction underway by August. Casey Mayor Cr Sam Aziz said: “With 120 people moving in each week, the City of Casey needs all the financial help that can be provided, to meet the massive infrastructure backlog. “The Interface Growth Fund has created the opportunity to bring forward projects, or to free up funds for other significant projects throughout the numerous growth fronts in Casey." Anne Callanan, Activities Officer at the “small” Selandra Rise Community Place, on Heather Grove, said 'locals are very excited,' about the new centre. “All the programs and classes we currently run will be moved over once it’s built, and

because of the size of where we are now it limits numbers so we will be able to expand,” Ms Callanan said. The centre will be built on vacant land at the corner of Linsell and Selandra boulevards and will feature environmentally sustainable design concepts and a place for community service organisations to connect. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said building
vital community facilities is “so important” in areas like Casey. “I’m always shocked at the growing population of Casey,” Ms Hutchins said. “This centre will provide essential community activities and services.” The City of Casey projects that 190,000 extra people will call Casey home in the next 25 years - the equivalent of two times the capacity of the MCG.

Keep the faith with fish on Good Friday THE nation’s peak body for dietitians is calling on Australians to dish-up some fish on Good Friday to reduce their risk of dementia, stroke and heart disease. The Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) wants Australians to use the traditionally “fish only” religious holiday as a reminder to eat fish more regularly to improve their longterm health. According to Lauren McGuckin, spokesperson for the DAA, fish is highly nutritious and deserves to be on our plates at least twice a week. “Good Friday is a great excuse to talk about the benefits of eating fish regularly and to discuss the best ways to add it into your weekly meals. “There is good research telling us that eating fish once a week reduces our risk of getting dementia and eating it twice a week reduces our risk of stroke, macular degeneration and heart disease,” said Ms McGuckin, an accredited practising dietitian. She urges Australians not to limit fish to the evening meal as it can be included at lunch and even breakfast. “I often have people asking how they can get enough protein in the morning and smoked salmon or ocean trout is a great addition to an omelette, or on top of toast or savoury pancakes.
“Canned fish on wholegrain crackers, fish sushi bites or fresh Vietnamese rice paper roles with fish are nutritious lunch options. “Tinned varieties of tuna or salmon are a great desk drawer or pantry staple,” said Ms McGuckin. But this comes with a warning against turning your healthy fish dish into a high-fat takeaway meal by choosing the ‘fish ‘n’ chips’ option. “Deep frying a piece of fish increases its fat content dramatically because a lot of oil is absorbed by the batter or crumb while it is being cooked,” said Ms McGuckin. And if the traditional smoked cod on Good Friday doesn’t appeal try these tasty fish tacos. Ingredients: (Serves 4) 2 x 150g white fish fillets such as snapper or barramundi Juice of 2 limes 1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 Lebanese cucumber, halved, seeds scraped out 1 clove garlic 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped ¼ bunch coriander, leaves picked 3 spring onions, finely sliced

punnet cherry tomatoes, · 1halved · 1 avocado · 4 wholemeal tortillas Method: 1. In a shallow bowl or plate combine fish with juice of 1 lime, cumin, and 1 tablespoon olive oil. Allow to marinate for 15 minutes. 2. Grate cucumber and finely grate garlic onto a chopping board. Slice the chilli and chop into the salsa. Chop the coriander leaves and stir in. Slice spring onions and chop roughly into the salsa on the board. Mix in ½ tablespoon olive oil, juice of half a lime and a pinch of salt. Stir in cherry tomatoes. 3. Preheat a non-stick frying pan over high heat. Add fish and cook for 2-3 minutes each side or until just cooked. Meanwhile, halve the avocado and remove the seed. Scrape out flesh into a small food processor. Add remaining ½ tablespoon olive oil and juice of half a lime. Add a pinch of salt and blend to combine. Alternatively, mash avocado with a fork. 4. Remove fish from pan, flake with a fork or tongs. Warm tortillas if desired. Spread with guacamole, top with flaked fish and salsa. Serve immediately.

Budding writers learn the ropes CASEY’S young writers are fast learners. Last Thursday Star News reporter Lachy Moorhead was again the guest speaker at the weekly writing session held by the Casey Youth Press, a group run out of the City of Casey’s Youth Services division. The Casey Youth Press group was started late last year, and gives students aged in their late teen to mid-twenties the opportunity to write about local events, news, issues and fictional stories, and get their work published on the youth website and Facebook page.
Teaming up with Star News, the City of Casey invited Lachy for the second time to visit and talk to the students about his experience as a journalist, while also fielding follow-up questions from last year’s presentation. Lachy was asked about ethics in the media, how reporters source their stories, and what stories he has previously covered. The students asked many intricate questions, showing maturity beyond their years and also highlighting how much they had gleaned from the previous presentation.
Lachy also spoke about the structure of his day, the difference between an ‘on-therecord’ and ‘off-the-record’ conversation, tips for interviewing, and the perks of the job. The Casey Youth Press initiative was born out of council’s ‘Fresh Words’ writing program, which encourages young writers in the municipality to write and contribute their own original pieces. For more information on Casey Youth Services, visit www.casey.vic.gov.au/youth/ home.
Tracy Philpot, 17, writes in her note book during the weekly Casey Youth Press meeting.

Crowds swell centre opening By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CARS lined surrounding Narre Warren streets and security dispersed traffic chaos inside the Casey Central car park on Thursday at the centre’s official opening. Hundreds of excited locals lined up to shop, eat and browse the $155 million redevelopment and 84 new stores. Former Melbourne Football Club forward Russell Robertson hosted the formalities which included a welcome to country and smoking ceremony, followed by indigenous dance. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz congratulated owners the Scentre Group on the refurbished shopping hub, calling it a magnificent investment and retail precinct. Cr Aziz told the crowds: “1200 jobs were created in the construction of this centre,” and added that the outlets will “foster a further 400 jobs”.
The centre can accommodate 1367 cars and features foodie giants Aldi and Coles with fierce competitor Woolworths set to open in late 2016. Casey Central Centre Manager Daniel Boyle said he was excited to introduce shoppers to their new meeting place. “Run by locals, for locals, this bustling social and community hub will have all the essentials our shoppers have asked for under one roof from services to fresh food and casual dining,” he said. Braving the crowds, 70-yearold Ton Vandelft said Casey Central means he no longer has to fight for a car park at Westfield Fountain Gate. “We have everything here,” Mr Vandelft said. The redevelopment of the centre has added a kid’s indoor play area, outdoor dining and a market style fresh food quarter, home to Arthur’s Health Store, Fish Pier, The Butcher Club and
Market Place fruit and vegetable store. Shoppers posted feedback on their Casey Central experience on the Cranbourne-Berwick News Facebook page. Leanne Goff was one happy customer, commenting: “Very impressed, has some fantastic shops!” Jo-Ann J. Schmitz Fitzgerald added: “It’s very busy...crazy. Took me about 30 minutes this morning at 11am to get a car spot. If you can park a few blocks and walk it, then that’s fine. Otherwise, I’d recommend to wait a few days/week before you go. That being said, it does have some great shops but some I cannot see working, but hope they stay". Vanessa Brown wrote “It certainly was busy in the car park today but well worth the wait for one! I think it’s got some great shops worth revisiting and luv the fresh food market!!”
The Jindi Worabak dancers reminded audiences of the traditional owners of the land.

Renae ticks another box By JARROD POTTER EMPHATICALLY signing off a fouryear college basketball journey, Renae Mokrzycki ticked off one of her greatest basketball dreams this week. Mokrzycki, 21, from Cranbourne North, featured in the NCAA Division 1 women’s basketball tournament for the University of Idaho, after her Vandals booked their place in the best-ofthe-best 32-team competition. A hard-fought season boiled down to the qualifying match last week, where the Vandals picked up a comprehensive 67-55 win over Idaho State in the Big Sky Tournament Championship Game. “Winning the Big Sky Championship, and making the tourney ... it took me 16 years to finally win a championship and cut a net, the feeling is nothing you can describe,” Mokrzycki said. “It was a time when everyone started fresh and anyone could win it. “Everyone was out to get one another and take home that championship, so it made it a lot harder - the conference over all was competitive all season round, even through preseason, but when you battle and play hard it takes you places, just like it took us the win the Big Sky Championship and then onto playing in the NCAA tournament.” The Vandals faced highly touted Baylor in the 2016 NCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Championship first round on Friday, and despite the 59-89 outcome, Mokrzycki was thrilled to end her college career on the big stage in March. “It is such an overwhelming yet amazing feeling to make this tournament,” Mokrzycki said. “It’s something that has always been a part of my life when I am home watching it, but now to actually say I have played and been a part of it is just the best feeling any basketballer can say they had. “As it’s my last season, it just tips it all off perfectly; I mean what a moment and way to leave playing college ball by playing in one of the biggest competitions around the globe. “Although we lost to Baylor, the number one seed in this conference,
Renae Mokrzycki played in the NCAA Division 1 tournament this week for the University of Idaho. Pictures: UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO we gained the experience and enjoyment as a team.” Mokrzycki - who averaged 16.6 minutes, 7.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game this season - has relished every step out on court in her fourth and final year as a student-athlete. From her time in junior college at North Idaho College to her final two seasons with the University of Idaho, every second on and off the court has taught the 182cm forward just what it takes to develop in the sport and find the next level in her game. “Everything I have learnt about basketball - the knowledge, the bonding, the travelling, the emotions, the
game,” Mokrzycki said. “This is the hardest, challenging, overwhelming, emotional, best thing I have ever done and experienced, but every moment of it was worth being a part of. “It is something not many people get the opportunity to do, and I’m proud of myself to have got myself to this level, get through it, and complete it.” She hasn’t decided yet where basketball will take her back in Australia, but one thing is for sure - a big rest is on the cards. “Due to being in season still I can’t deal with anyone or clubs, but I have got a few things in mind,” Mokrzycki
said. “College has exceeded my expectations and I don’t know if I want to come home and play at a really high level, or come back and play the season out and then try to go full steam again. “I feel I need a little break, but if something comes up, I’m all for giving my best.” She wanted to send out some words of advice to any potential collegebound Australian - Mokrzycki said life as a student-athlete is not for the faint of heart but those who persevere will flourish in the NCAA system. “I am not going to lie, if you play a sport and you want to come to college make sure you love it enough to follow
through with it,” Mokrzycki said. “College is not like what you play back home, it is a whole different ball game - it will break you down, it will test you, it will make you want to quit and give up. “Only the love you have for it will push you through - family and friends can help, but you need to be mentally prepared to compete at his level. “If I can do it, then there is every chance you can - just believe and stay true to yourself by always remembering the reason why you fell in love with the sport in the first place.”
Big weekend for Cranbourne kids By JARROD POTTER

CRANBOURNE LITTLE ATHLETICS HOSTING the state track and field championships and keeping a few of the medals at the venue made for a phenomenal weekend for Cranbourne Little Athletics Centre. The rain and heavy winds didn’t stop the action on the track heating up as Cranbourne’s athletes proudly represented the region at the Little Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships on their home track. Cranbourne Little Athletics Centre coach Mark Jouvelet was thrilled with the weekend, not only for his athletes results
but for how well received the Casey Fields Regional Athletics Centre. “All the feedback we got was tremendous and it encourages a different style of racing as it gets pretty windy,” Jouvelet said. “The general consensus from Little Athletics Victoria was fantastic - everyone loved the facility and the best thing is the response through Facebook. “The club and myself personally were contacted by clubs around the state, thanked us and thought it was the most magnificent stadium. “The amount of people who were blown away by our venue - leaving the venue they were speechless about how great Casey Fields is.”
Jouvelet thought the likes of Cranbourne athletes Keenan O’Hanlon - who added two more state gold medals to his trophy case in the Under 13 triple jump and long-jump, Nancy Agostino (gold in Under 11 girls triple jump), Sheldon Heta, Hani Abdelrahim, Brooklyn Prescott and Chloe Satchwell starred at the meet. “(Keenan) has just had the most unbelievable year,” Jouvelet said. “Australian medallist, senior gold medallist for triple jump and the junior medallist for triple jump and long jump as well.” It capped off the end of the summer athletics season for the region’s little athletes as many now focus on winter cross country season.

Rays run a late rally By JARROD POTTER ACCURACY and dogged-determination guided the Stingrays into the inaugural Youth Girls Challenge grand final. Seven straight goals against Calder showed a complete turnaround from previous rounds where goal-kicking hampered Dandenong’s best efforts. The final seemed to bring out the best in the girls ... at least after a main break rev-up from coach Scott Gowans. Dandenong had to spring into life through the second half, after Calder fired off three goals in the second term to boast a 14-point lead. Calder had outgunned the Stingrays on the wings, with elite run coming in particular from Georgia Patrikios, Taylah Manson and Deanna Berry. Dandenong surged in the third term, with the wind - booting three goals as Cranbourne’s Courtney Jones (two goals) took the game on. She went forward, marked cleanly and drilled two through the uprights before taking another strong mark and handballing over the top to Parris Stahl to put the
Stingrays back in front. Kayla Ripari, Teagan Sheldon and the skipper Georgia Walker rallied in the final term, locking the ball in and stopping the Cannons’ run-on. Eliza Vale snapped the Cannons back in front, leaving a hard task for Dandenong to work the ball up forward against the wind. Inch by inch, the Stingrays crawled towards goals, with Ripari making the most goalmouth scramble, chucking a quick kick on the boot to reclaim a slender lead. Dandenong closed up shop in the final few minutes and held on despite a couple of forward-50 entries from Calder. “It was nail-biting stuff but just very proud of them,” Gowans said. “To come back against the wind and against such a talented, well-coached side is really good - the heart and soul in this group is amazing. “We loaded up our flanks - half back and half forwardwith running players and even if they were playing out of position they’d spread the ball. “Then if they got on top we were confident enough that the
players we put there could run and support in defence.” Gowans’ half-time spray was mostly focused on structure and the lack thereof Dandenong had enforced through the first half. But a return to their best ways in the second phase of the clash ensured the Stingrays would get one step closer to the maiden Youth Girls Challenge premiership. “We talked about team structure and one of our structures is to kill the ball when we’re going against the wind and those basic things cost us two goals,” Gowans said. “We kicked into the offensive side instead of the defensive - and two goals in a game like this is enormous and in a way we’re really lucky.” Dandenong now faces Sandringham in the Youth Girls Challenge grand final on Easter Monday afternoon at Frankston Oval at 4.15pm. “It will be interesting they’ve got Izzy (Isabel Huntington) and Smithy (Katherine Smith) - but I just can’t wait and I’m really looking forward to it,” Gowans said.

Cavaliers get the points By JARROD POTTER BIG V - ROUND 1 CONTRASTING fortunes faced Casey in its Big V Division 1 season-opening round as it got out of the doubleheader with a win and a loss. Forced to face both of Division 1’s grand finalists Melton and Latrobe City to start 2016 was a massive mountain for the Cavaliers to climb, but the side’s Saturday night’s trip to Gippsland was extremely lucrative as they brushed aside Latrobe City 90-64. The Cavaliers turned off the Energy in the second term, posting a resounding 29 points on the back of huge efforts from Brent Hobba (22 points), new recruit Mitch Chapman (20 points), Bevan Camilleri (15 points) and a double-double from Dean Johnson (11 points, 13 rebounds). Hobba’s haul is even more impressive as he left the court in the second quarter with an ankle injury, as he reeled in his numbers off only 14 minutes. But backing up without Hobba or Lester Strong (finger) on Sunday evening was a tough ask against Melton as Casey fell for a pittance in an 82-85 thriller. It came down to the dying seconds as Melton managed to surge ahead, despite the hard yards put in by Ben Louis (24 points), Matt Witherden (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Johnson (15 points, eight rebounds). “It was a particularly tough draw - to be given the two grand finalists from last season on opening weekend of all things - when we saw that we reset our goals to a degree,” Casey coach Stewart Baird said. “You want to win both, but if we did get away with a 1-1 weekend, then it wasn’t a bad start. “Really solid win against Latrobe - weren’t great in the second quarter but got things going the way we wanted to in the second.” Hobba (ankle injury) - despite that he was well on his way to some sort of game but it was funny how we lost him through that quarter and
Casey guard Ben Louis, pictured playing in the preseason, toiled to halt Melton's NBL acquisition Tim Coenraad on Sunday afternoon. 150539
Picture: JARROD POTTER it galvanised the rest of the guys to replace his loss and we played really well in the third.” Melton - featuring NBL players Tim Coenraad (31 points, 13 rebounds) and Chris Patton (11 points, 13 rebounds) gave the Cavaliers all kinds of trouble in the key, but Ben Louis relished the tough task on Coenraad. “Without Hobba and Lester, it was uncertain how it would play out as we were short two bigs and two significant players, but the guys stepped up,” Baird said. “Ben Louis was amazing - not only at the offensive end, but he took the job of playing on Tim Coenraad - we certainly didn’t stop him, but curtailed him. “If he was to play the whole season with Melton he’ll have some 50 point games and Benny did a great job on holding him and definitely a few moments during the game, especially the fourth, where we let him down a bit. “We’ll put that down to early season stuff - that was the lesson for us to learn.”
Baird believes Strong will return after the Easter break, but didn’t think they’d rush Hobba back into the blue and silver for round 2 when Casey hosts Melbourne Uni at home from 7.30pm on Saturday 2 April. Under new coach Michael Davies, Casey women opened the accounts with a 61-51 away triumph over Altona as Ruchelle Mccracken (12 points, 11 rebounds) excelled in her first clash with the Cavaliers. Tarryn Wilkin (12 points, seven rebounds) and Amy Mcfarlane (eight points) led the charge in the 2016 debut for a new-look Cavaliers’ line-up. Casey women travel to face Pakenham after the Easter break at Cardinia Life on 2 April. Casey’s youth men rounded out the weekend with a 69-65 win over Chelsea on Saturday night before a hardfought loss to Melton 54-63 in the curtain-raiser on Sunday afternoon. The Cavs’ juniors face Warrnambool on Saturday 2 April at home from 5.30pm.

Chef’s winning recipe? By DAVID NAGEL A NEW head-chef with a modern day menu and some fresh new ingredients to boot - is this the year that Doveton supporters have been salivating about for so long? Well - it’s time to plate up and find out. The Doves have provided some of the biggest news stories of the offseason, securing the star-signature of Melbourne’s 2009 best and fairest winner, Aaron ‘Flash’ Davey, while former player Stephen O’Brien returns as coach after five years of mastering his craft at the elite level of the game. After originally coaching Parkdale in the Southern Football League, O’Brien’s last local tenure was with Devon Meadows before spending four years with the Casey Scorpions. Two years there in a development role were followed by two as the senior midfield coach, a role he also fulfilled with the Box Hill Hawks last year. The Scorpions and Hawks are affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and Hawthorn and this exposed O’Brien to the modern trends of the game. “I was really fortunate when Mark Neeld coached at Melbourne because he opened the doors for me and let me in to the inner sanctum,” said the just turned 44-year-old. “I’d have a day off from work once a week and spend the day at the club, sitting in on team meetings, helping with training; the learning curve was incredible under him. The game plans are identical, like for like, at VFL and AFL level and I told the club (Doveton)
Past-player Stephen O'Brien has brought some fresh ideas to his new role as coach of the Doveton Football Club. 151901 Picture: DAVID NAGEL from day one that I’ll be coaching the modern game. “That’s what we’ve been coaching, that’s what we’ve been training towards, and full credit to the boys for taking it on board. Knowing your role, and playing your role, and not trying to be bigger than that role itself is the key. If the players can’t buy in to that - then this isn’t the place for them.” Apart from game plans and structures the Doves appear to have plenty of room to improve on their fifth placing from last year, beaten by Beaconsfield in the elimination final. Their leading goal-kicker of the
last decade, Ryan Hendy, returns after four years away to bolster an underperforming forward line, while Kyle Hendy and Andrew Henwood will slot straight into the club’s best 22. The talented Jarrad Boumann has been the outstanding figure on the track, while former league best and fairest winner Michael ‘Pickles’ Henry is hoping for better luck with injuries after two years of serious interruption. But it’s the signing of Davey that could take the South East Football Netball League by storm. Davey was one of the most exciting talents in the AFL during his 178-game
career, finishing runner-up to teammate Jared Rivers in the 2004 AFL Rising Star. He claimed the Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Medal in 2009 and represented Australia three times (2005, 2006 and 2013) at International Rules. Davey doesn’t turn 33 until June and, if he’s at his best with that trademark blistering pace, he could be unstoppable for the Doves this year. “When you look at that small forward role he was the first to play it as it’s played today,” O’Brien said with respect. “Since Christmas he’s been here every session and his impact has been enormous. Just his knowledge of the game is incredible, and as he’s got comfortable around the guys he’s started to impart that knowledge and has really been setting a high standard. A player of his ability and record, a best and fairest winner at AFL level, he’s a massive signing for the league and will be crucial for us this season.” So what will O’Brien accept as a pass mark in his first season at the helm? “Finals are a must and when we get there hopefully we’re fit and healthy and we’ll see where we go from there,” he said. “It’s a good competition; I think people undersell this competition a bit. You look at Berwick, they’re an outstanding side and we’ve got some catching up to do. The stats alone tell us we’re seven to eight goals on average behind last year’s finalists. We’re coming from a long way back but I’m confident we can make some inroads.” The Doves supporters - they can almost taste it!
New blood for Doves By DAVID NAGEL DOVETON will unveil the South East Football Netball League’s number-one recruit when it rolls out a Good Friday welcome mat for Hampton Park at Robinson Oval. Fresh off their first finals appearance in six years, the Doves have locked in the signature of former Melbourne excitement-machine, Aaron ‘Flash’ Davey, who brings further quality to a league well and truly on the rise. The 2009 Demons’ best and fairest winner heads a strong list of signings for the Doves, with Ryan Hendy, Andrew Henwood and Kyle Hendy all set to play key roles in the starting 18. The Redbacks have also recruited well as they head in to the season opener. In come quality midfielders in Edithvale-Aspendale pair Jordan Derbyshire and Tim Mavric, while Cora Lynn brothers Matt and Nathan Langley will hope to bring that winning feeling across from Cobra-land. New-coach Matt Shorey said his side is well prepared after three solid pre-season engagements against South Croydon, Clayton and Mitcham. “We seem to be running last quarters out, which is great, because that’s an area we identified as being poor in last year,” Shorey said. Friday’s contest is part of Round 9, with Round 1 in SEFNL kicking off on Saturday 9 April.
Stingrays are ready to pounce with some top-age talent By JARROD POTTER LOADED up with top-age talent and a few familiar faces, Dandenong Stingrays are set for another strong TAC Cup campaign. Dandenong - still reeling in many ways following the heartbreaking preliminary final loss to Eastern Ranges last year - has rebounded with a power-packed list, led by the likes of Josh Bat-
tle (Doveton), Myles Poholke, Liam Mckay and Tom Murphy. Stingrays coach Craig Black believes any motivation to succeed on the training track is a positive and last year’s loss is still close to the surface for the returning playing group. “You’d hope so - you look at the positives and you lose a game like a prelim and it burns deep in a few players,” Black
Tommy Glen has returned to the Stingrays as a 19-year-old and will get his first 2016 hit out on Saturday against Gippsland Power. 144009 Picture: JARROD POTTER
said. “If they can use that as motivation for their preseason then I’m, happy for that. “The boys are naturally improving over that 18th year too and when they come into the pre-season they know what it’s about and can get stuck into the season ahead.” With such an ultra-successful year in terms of the draft seeing seven players head into
the AFL including the number one pick Jacob Weitering - it’s tricky to navigate the side back to the top, but the Stingrays have only had the season in mind, even with the thrill of the draft going on late last year. “It’s a funny situation when you have the draft - it’s not until mid to late November so by then we’ve started the pre-season with the new group,” Black said. “Your focus is pretty much
straight away on the new kids - while we’re happy for those who get drafted and disappointed for those who miss out - that’s just the industry we’re in.” Some who missed out last year’s draft and will be eager to impress are Beaconsfield defenders Tommy Glen and Tom Jok - who could play alongside his younger brother Bol in this year’s TAC Cup - as well as ruck-forward Travis Young. But for the most part it’s the natural progression of players like Brenton Wells, Reece Piper, Mason De Wit and other now top-age players who will form the Stingrays’ nucleus this season. Black knows how hard it is to travel to Power territory and take the points, but thinks the all-round list has the potential to get take the victory and climb back towards the peaks of
the TAC Cup ladder once again. “Our list has been hard work - even since they started back in November - and the boys are keen to get out and play for four points against good opposition,” Black said. “We had a squad of 28 train at Seaford on Saturday and had a really good session so we’ve just got to back that up this week on the track and follow it up with a good trip down to Traralgon. “Typically Gippsland are bloody hard to beat down there in the time I’ve been here about six or seven years - and we’ve only won there once and hopefully can turn that around this week.” Dandenong is leaving its leadership group announcement until its jumper presentation on Tuesday night, after the Gazette goes to print, with a number of strong leaders in the running for the top title.
2016 TAC CUP LIST DANDENONG STINGRAYS : Tommy Glen, Thomas Jok, Oscar Clavarino, Jordan Stewart (BEACONSFIELD); Ryan Gains, Bailey Morrish, Reece Piper (BERWICK); Mitchell Lewis, Malis Lokeron, Josh Battle (DOVETON); Kyle Beveridge (DEVON MEADOWS); Kirk Dickson (CRANBOURNE); Brenton Wells (NARRE WARREN); Jake Frawley, Bol Jok, Jackson Allen, Danny Allsop, Dylan Atkins, Zak Barrett, Joshua Bateman, Aiden Bonar, Nick Carlon, Hunter Clark, Patrick Coates, Luke Dalmau, Riley D’arcy, Aaron Darling, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Tom De Koning, Mason De Wit, Jack Doman, Ty Ellison, Sam Fowler, Tom Freeman, Lachlan Gill-Renouf , Ben Graham, Tom Hogan, Darcy Hope, Daniel Hughes, Max Kleverkamp, Matthew La Fontaine, Charlie Martello, Mitchell Mccarthy, Liam Mckay, Frankie Mitropoulos, Dylan Morris, Tom Murphy, Angus Paterson, Myles Poholke, Tom Roberts, Nathan Scagliarini, Jarrod Smith, William Smith, Oliver Walsh, Callum White, Lachlan Young, Travis Young.

A 16-year drought CRANBOURNE RSL BOWLS MIDWEEK CRANBOURNE RSL is celebrating its first Pennant victory in 16 years after its Midweek Division 3 team scored a thrilling grand final victory over Fitzroy/Victoria. The 63 to 62 triumph gave the RSL the title of the Division 3 champions of Metropolitan Melbourne and capped off a great run over the last two seasons. The team has finished top in both Division 4 and Division 3, won the section final in Division 3 and now the grand championship to rise from Division 4 to Division 2 next year. The toughest of this group was exemplified by its 61 to 58 semifinal victory over Middle Park, coming from 13 shots down at the lunch break to win by three. Ray Chapman’s team led the fight back winning by 11 shots while Yvonne Vander Wees’ team scored four
shots on the last end to make victory an achievable target. SATURDAY Division 8 Pennant - Sectional Grand Final Cranbourne RSL 34 lost to Dandenong RSL 50 In the battle of the RSL teams Dandenong proved just a bit better than Cranbourne RSL. The scores were close all day, but Dandenong got on top over the last few ends. Our team tried hard but in the end fell short. They should be congratulated on the way they played the game and for their sportsmanship after the game. Well done everyone. The Cranbourne RSL Bowls Club has had a very good year. Four out of six teams won their sections, two made the sectional grand final. One flag is still undecided for our Midweek Division 3 team. The future looks bright at the RSL.

When Amstel faces off against Yarrambat pennant AMSTEL GOLF CLUB AMSTEL Golf Club’s Ranfurlie Course hosted round 1 of VGA Division 6 Pennant. Amstel faced Yarrambat and were determined to get the season off to a good start at home. After a tough week at the selection table, the final seven took to the course on a sunny but windy afternoon. Through nine holes Amstel led in six of the seven contests with the remaining one all tied up. Captain Brett Greenough got
Amstel off to the perfect start with a 6 and 5 thumping of Darren Gally. Not long after, Leigh Baily saluted 5 and 4 while Club Champion Kirk Tuati, playing at number 1, demolished Andrew Monteleone 7 and 6. Lee James was debuting at number 2 for Amstel and enjoyed a commanding 4and 3 win while power hitter Takunda Moyo was far too strong and wrapped up his match 4 and 2. Young gun Jack Hitchcock came up the last, all square in a match that
was always tight, however he dug deep and won the long par 5 to prevail 1 up. This left Jayson Tekopua who was stuck in a see-sawing battle with Yarrambat’s Darren Kershaw. Tekopua led by a single hole coming up 18 and had the match well in his keeping when an inexplicable mistake from the normally rock solid number 5s short game saw the match extended down 19. With Kershaw safely on the green for two, Tekopua had a greenside bunker shot in front of him for
his second after a huge drive but again his touch deserted him and he left the ball in the sand. Despite a brilliant third shot, the damage was done, and when Kershaw made his birdie putt it was all over. Despite the disappointment of losing that match, a commanding 6-1 win sees Amstel sit atop the ladder leading into the Easter break and are now looking forward to meeting Whittlesea at Melbourne Airport on 3 April.
Southern United given the brush-off by Bayside By JARROD POTTER IN THE first battle of WNPL nextdoor neighbours, Southern United was brushed aside by Bayside United 1-3. Candela Ferreyra Bas (62’) opened the accounts for Southern in the second half, but by then Bayside United had broken free via Kendra Jones (11’), Bronte James (58’) and Aimee Benton (72’). Southern United has a week off for Easter before heading across to Alamein FC with its sights set on winning its first WNPL clash.
In the first round of the Team App Cup, Berwick City was defeated by perennial high-flyers South Melbourne 1-4, while Casey Comets had a bye and will travel to Essendon Royals on Sunday 3 April. Southern United will open the accounts in the Team App Cup when it faces Templestowe United away on 6 April. NPL/FFA CUP QUALIFIERS THE NPL sides entered the mix over the weekend as round 4 of the FFA Cup qualifiers kicked off around the state. Endeavour Hills Fire contin-

ued its strong run through the ranks in a 2-1 triumph over Sandringham SC - as Stefan Bontemps (18’) opened the accounts. The lead was doubled via Reha Ulusoy (47’) as the Fire managed to stay lit against Sandringham’s best efforts. The State League 4 South side is one of the last remaining from the lower reaches of the FFV structure and will be part of the round-of-32. The other remaining SL4 side Keysborough SC faced a goliath in South Melbourne and fell 0-10, while higher-ranked side Doveton
SC kept its hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Banyule City. Casey Comets were knocked out 1-3 by Pascoe Vale, South Springvale took a 1-0 victory over Eastern Lions. From the NPL 2 ranks, Dandenong City brushed aside Melbourne City SL3 4-1, Dandenong Thunder 3-0 over Werribee City off a Amir Osmancevic hat-trick while Springvale White Eagles was knocked out 0-1 by Malvern City. Dandenong City will travel to Werribee City this weekend as NPL action resumes.
CHRIS Dew still can’t quite believe what his Pearcedale side achieved on the weekend. Of course, after the Dales won their second successive first XI Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association (MPCA) flag, their celebrations extended right through to Monday. It’s really not until this point where it’s all started to sink in for Dew and his men. “I think there’s only been four other clubs that have done it (winning from Sub-District to District, and then to Provincial in two seasons),” he said. “It’s pretty big, but it’ll take a while to sink in.” Dew came across to the Dales to play with a tightknit group of mates after his stint in Victorian Premier Cricket, and he paid tribute to all the other players who played a role in delivering premierships over the past two seasons - particularly on the weekend, when the club (9/272) got the job done over Flinders (136). “Throughout the year there were always guys putting their hands up,” he said. “In every game it felt like someone else stood up. I don’t think there were two weeks in a row where it was the same bloke. “It’s a great bunch of boys, and a great bunch of players really. I was pretty lucky I went there when I did.” Dew said his side’s style of play was suited to both the District and Provincial levels of the MPCA, and he expects the Dales to more than match it with plenty of the top sides in season 2016/17. But for now, it’s all about celebrating what they’ve achieved against Flinders, and acknowledging the efforts of some great people at the club. “I was really happy with Matt Cousland because last year he missed out on the grand final,” Dew said of his great mate and club vice-president. “This year he made a couple of 40-plus scores and he’s still got a bit to go - I reckon he’ll get better - but we saw a massive difference in him. Having him at the top of the order was really great.” Luke Jennings and Sam Frawley were two of the other feel-good stories from the weekend having also missed out last season. With the likes of Cousland, Jennings, Frawley, chairman of selectors Jason Morris and past president Mitch Andrew, Dew couldn’t have won this season’s premiership with a better group of people. “A big part of what we’ve been able to do is because of how close we all are,” he said. “I’ve never played anywhere where the boys have been this close. “We did it for the whole club - not just for our team.”
Celebrations aplenty for Tooradin White
Young stars are stepping up to the net
TOORADIN (120) has overcome some wet weather and a gallant opponent to defeat Devon Meadows (88) to take out the WGCA Under 12 White premiership last Wednesday. Despite not losing a game the Seagulls finished second on the ladder and progressed to the grand final after a thrilling tie with third-placed Gembrook in their semi-final. Day one of the grand final was washed out, meaning the game was played over the nights of Friday 11 March and Wednesday 16 March. Batting first the Seagulls made 120 with Tadhg O’Riordan (20), Jack Mannix (17) and Dylan Vincent (17) all playing valuable innings. Devon Meadows started well in its reply but once the first few wickets fell the Seagulls’ attack, led by O’Riordan (3/8), got on top. The Tooradin boys bowled
OUR current day stars in the SEFNL A Grade competition - like Meaghan Winter and Sarah McDermott - will need to be on their toes as a fresh crop of elite young talent emerges from the junior ranks. SEFNL’s first representative teams took to the court in the Yarra Ariels Tournament held on Sunday 6 March, with coaches Donna Wilson (U17), Katrina Foster (U15) and Lauren Bourke (U13) leading their new-look teams in to battle. Foster and her side had an instant impact at the elite level, making the semi-finals and missing out on a grand final berth by just two goals. The next outing for the superstars of tomorrow will be on Sunday 17 April at the courts of the Casey Netball Association.
Coaches Steve Simpson, left, and Barry Freeman, back right, with the Tooradin Under 12s premiership team. The team included; Tadhg O’Riordan, Tyler Evans, Jesse Craven, Tom Rodgers, Casey Mills, Liam Simpson, Kye de Little, Jack Mannix, Dylan Vincent, Fergus Goldberg, Charlie Hobson and Tom Holland. Picture: CONTRIBUTED and fielded magnificently, having an outstanding win after bowling the Panthers out for just 88 in the 33rd over of their innings.
Congratulations and thanks go to the coaches, Steve Simpson and Barry Freeman, for their dedication to the boys throughout the season.

Crossover’s rugged style By EWAN KENNEDY AT THE end of 2015 Fiat expanded its 500 range with the introduction of a crossover called the 500X. Significantly bigger than the standard Fiat 500 it has more interior space, utilised through the convenience of rear doors. The Fiat 500X was designed in conjunction with the new Jeep Renegade. Italian Fiat now controls Jeep after the American company got into financial trouble during the GFC. There’s a nice combination of Italian style and American 4WD knowhow in this partnership. Fiat 500X as tested this week is an all-wheeldrive (AWD) Cross Plus, rather than a true 4WD in the manner of a Jeep. Should you not need AWD the Fiat 500X also comes with 2WD, through the front wheels, at a lower cost. Visually, the Fiat 500X is an expanded version of the 500 with a family resemblance to its baby brother at the front, in various details around the body, and in its funky interior. The latter has the pseudo metallic look that appeals to all Fiat lovers. Cross Plus is easily identified by the protection bars front and rear, with further body mouldings around its wheelarches and on the sills. Like its little brother, the 500X is offered in a huge variety of colours and you can choose from a large range of accessories to permit personalisation. There are 12 body colours, 15 dress-up decals, nine choices of door mirror covers, five door-
Big brother to the popular 500, the Fiat 500X moves in family wagon field. MODEL RANGE 500X Pop 1.4-litre turbo-petrol 2WD fivedoor wagon: $28,000 (manual), $30,000 (automatic). 500X Pop Star 1.4-litre turbo-petrol 2WD five-door wagon: $33,000 (automatic). 500X Lounge 1.4-litre turbo-petrol AWD five-door wagon: $38,000 (automatic). 500X Cross Plus 1.4-litre turbo-petrol AWD five-door wagon: $39,000 (automatic).
sill inserts, five alloy wheel designs, fabrics and leather can be part of the pack. Even the key fob can be ordered in five different designs. Our test 500X was in glowing white with red door mirrors and stripes in the same bright hue on the lower areas of the doors, best of all is the red-and-white 500X decal stretching most of the way along the roof. You have to be tall to see this feature but it looked brilliant when viewed beneath our balcony at home - particularly with a nice cappuccino in hand... The range starts at $28,000 for the 500X Pop with front-wheel-drive and a six-speed manual gearbox and rises to $39,000 for the all-wheeldrive 500X Cross Plus with automatic transmission. In between are the Pop Star (great name!) at $33,000 and the Lounge for $38,000. The 500X Pop can be specified with a sixspeed dual-clutch auto for an added $2000, the
automatic is standard in the Pop Star. The AWD models, the Lounge and Cross Plus, have a nine-speed automatic. Equipment levels are high to justify the prices. Even the entry level 500X Pop has 16-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch TFT instrument display, cruise control, paddle shifts on the automatic, Fiat’s Uconnect system with a 5.0-inch touchscreen, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and Bluetooth connectivity. The 500X Pop Star gets has 17-inch alloys, automatic headlights and wipers, three driving modes (Auto, Sport, and Traction plus), keyless entry and start, and a reversing camera. The Uconnect system has a 6.5-inch touchscreen and GPS navigation. Fiat 500X Lounge also receives 18-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch colour TFT instrument cluster display, automatic-high-beam, a BeatsAudio Premium sound system with subwoofer and eight
speakers, dual zone automatic air conditioning, interior ambient lighting and two-tone premium interior trim. Cross Plus has steeper ramp angles, xenon headlights, and a different finish on the dashboard. Power in all models is from a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol in 500X all models. It produces 103 kW and 230 Nm in the frontdrive models and 125 kW and 250 Nm in the AWDs. Fiat is very strong in the safety field and the 500X has more than 60 standard or available items that include a reversing camera, forward collision warning, LaneSense Warning, lane departure warning; blind-spot monitoring and rear cross path detection. The ESC system has integrated electronic roll mitigation and seven air bags are installed in all models. Ride comfort is very good and it’s obvious a lot of work has gone into noise and vibration suppression. Indeed, the Fiat 500X is as quiet, or quieter as many SUVs from the next class up. Interior space is good and four adults can be carried, though tall travellers may have to compromise on legroom at times. Handling isn’t exactly Italian sporty but the 500X is neutral in the way it feels until you’re well above the cornering speeds likely to be attempted by the average owner. Outward visibility is very good thanks to the relatively upright greenhouse. The new Fiat 500X offers Italian style, the ability to be personalised in thousands of different ways - yet is very practical. What more could you ask
