Lord Wellington? By MEGAN OGLE NOOSA residents will have to wait to find out who will take the top spot in this year’s election, with votes too close to call. At the time of going to press, over 8,000 votes were yet to be counted, making this one of the closest races in Noosa history with only 629 votes separating Councillors Tony Wellington and Sandy Bolton in the mayoral race. Cr Wellington has taken the lead position with a total of 12,238 votes, with Cr Bolton close behind on 11,609. Third mayoral candidate Ray Kelly is in last position with 5,302 of the total 29,149 formal votes. Mr Kelly, in third position by more than 6,000 votes, admitted defeat on Saturday (19 March) when he took to his Facebook page to thank his supporters and congratulate his fellow mayoral candidates. “The votes are in and although not in my favour I still feel like a winner,” he wrote. “I would like to thank everyone who believed in me and showed me with their votes yesterday. “My congratulations to Tony Wellington and Sandy Bolton - I look forward to hearing the final results on who is to be the new Noosa Mayor.” Cr Wellington took to his Facebook page to thank his “friend” for remaining a “gentleman” throughout

the campaign and said Mr Kelly was always “affable and polite”. However it’s not only the mayoral votes which are neck-and-neck, with some council candidates separated by less than 21 votes. At the time of printing the three incumbent councillors were in a clear lead with Cr Frank Wilkie leading the pack with 8,497 votes, followed by Cr Frank Pardon on 6,909 and Cr Joe Jurisevic with 6,801 votes. Out of the new candidates Ingrid Jackson is in with a chance with 6,628 votes followed by the youngest candidate Jess Glasgow with 6,193 votes and rounding out the sixth position is Elaine Williams with 6,172 votes. Cr Bolton said she was looking forward to the announcement of Noosa’s next council after an “exciting and nail-biting” few days. “I am sure everyone is looking forward to the final tallies,” she said. “I wish all candidates the very best over the coming days, and congratulate everyone on their achievements through this campaign.” The deadline for postal votes is 29 March, with results expected to be announced shortly after. Keep up to date with the election results as they happen at www.ecq.qld. gov.au or head to Noosa Today’s facebook page for all your council coverage.

Playford’s vote of thanks

Free Noosa: Noosa MP Glenn Elmes has praised outgoing Noosa Mayor Noel Playford for his role in freeing Noosa. “It is now history that the Noosa community won that fight and we celebrated the third anniversary of that vote last Wednesday. Mr Elmes likened Mr Playford’s retirement to a piece of history and praised the mayor for “rebuilding

the local authority and, with others, “re-crafting the council and leaving it “in good shape: money in the bank and a zero rate increase this year. “As I speak here today, I know that at Noel’s home the engine in the car is turning over, he said. 1221337-KK12-16

IN LIGHT of the recent election and in time for the three year anniversary of Noosa’s de-amalgamation, Noosa MP Glen Elmes has farewelled outgoing Mayor Noel Playford and praised his efforts in “freeing Noosa. Mr Elmes addressed Parliament on Thursday 17 March to farewell councillor Playford and thank him for his years of service. “I thank and highlight my deep personal regard for retiring Noosa Mayor Noel Playford, he said. Mr Elmes said Mr Playford, once retired from local government, was brought back into public life when Noosa was forced to amalgamate. “Noel was the chairman of the Noosa Shire Council between 1988 and 1997, Mr Elmes said. “He thought he had retired from public life until the Bligh government and, in particular, then Treasurer Andrew Fraser decided that they would meddle in our local community affairs and forcefully amalgamate Noosa into the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Mr Elmes said he “should thank them as the forced amalgamation of Noosa “fostered a belief that a small community can achieve anything. “It does that by having community leaders who are prepared to put themselves forward at the expense of almost anything else in their lives on order to carry the argument or, should I say, fight, he said. “Noel Playford, along with others, was at the forefront of the successful Free Noosa campaign. “His long and extensive background in local government gave him that vital edge.

“There have been some outstanding leaders in the Noosa Shire since its inception in 1910. “Noel Playford deserves to be among the very best - perhaps even a little higher.

Counting delays in scan ballot pilot By MEGAN OGLE LOCAL media has reported the electronic ballot-scanning pilot launched in five councils during the weekend’s local government election in Queensland has caused concern for potential councillors. The technology that runs first-past-the-post ballot papers through a scanner, takes a photo, and then recognises the numeral, has caused extensive delays in the Noosa, Mackay, Toowoomba, Livingstone and Gladstone council regions. At the time of print, 10 of the 18 polling booths had been counted in Noosa leaving councillors in limbo over their fate. According to local reports, Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) assistant commissioner Dermot Tiernan said the delays in Noosa had been caused by sensitivity in the technology.

“What happened on Saturday night is that we started scanning postal votes, and postal votes are always folded up and creased, and we probably set the scanners’ sensitivity a bit too specific, so it was reading some of the creases as marks,“ Mr Tiernan said. “Once we realised what was going on, we switched to pre-poll votes and the scanning technology worked quite well.“ Mr Tiernan told local media that while the technology had been successfully tested on Noosa ballot papers from the 2012 election, other issues on election night had been the result of dated software. “The old system was built to run state elections and on Saturday night we had to ask it to run 349 local government elections and 89 little referendum elections on top of that, so the poor thing kept tripping over itself,“ Mr Tier-

nan said. Despite the delays, one local government representative said the issue was not with the technology but with the planning processes implemented by ECQ. Council candidate Brian Stockwell said he believed the delay was due to “resource issues” and referred to the implementation of the new counting system as a “gross mismanagement”. “Having spent today in the local ECQ office watching the process, it is clear the scanning technology is effective and that the adjudication of informal and non-confirming votes is as quick as conventional counting methods,” he said. “However, what is also painfully clear is that ECQ may have tested the technology, but has not spent one minute considering workflow, nor done time and motion studies to determine the

amount of additional resources required after polling day as a result of centralising the counting process. “The local office has more people today than yesterday and they are helpful and hardworking, but it is clear you can’t replace 100 booth workers who would have normally conducted the count on polling day with five people and two machines.” “To suggest the count is going at snails’ pace is an insult to snails.” Noosa Park Association vicepresident Michael Gloster also weighed in on the issue with a short letter to the editor urging ECQ to scrap the new counting method. “Get off your backsides and count manually,” he wrote. “You’re making yourself a laughing stock, and we’re as mad as hell.”

Wellington switches off TV coverage MAYORAL candidate and incumbent councillor Tony Wellington has been caught on camera threatening to cut off a local news group’s access to council press releases. The shocking snippet of footage was filmed by WIN News and shown on Monday night (21 March) during their 6.30pm news bulletin. In the footage Cr Wellington can be heard telling the WIN News journalist the media outlet could be cut off from receiving council press releases for the next four years. Cr Wellington’s comments were in response to WIN News questioning about alleged dodgy polling

booth tactics caught on camera only days earlier. When questioned about the alleged incident in the 21 March news bulletin, Cr Wellington said he thought the WIN News journalist “wasn’t going to go there”. When Cr Wellington thought the cameras were turned off, he then threatened to withhold media releases from WIN News for the “next four years”. Cr Wellington was contacted to comment but declined. Cr Wellington’s comments come while counting is still in progress for the local elections, proving to be a close contest between Cr Wellington and fellow mayoral candidate Sandy Bolton.

By MEGAN OGLE QUEENSLAND’S electoral system is set for a major overhaul, with voters in most parts of the state backing a referendum on fixed four-year parliamentary terms. Counting is yet to be finalised but with 62 per cent already counted, the “yes“ vote has a clear lead of 53.3 per cent to 46.7 per cent, paving the way for the biggest change to the structure of Queensland politics in decades. With 18 booths and postal votes still to count, Noosa is showing clear support with 55.1 per cent of residents voting “yes” for the proposed changes and 44.9 per cent of residents voting “no”. Keep up to date with the referendum result at www.ecq.qld.gov.au or head to Noosa Today’s Facebook page for all your election coverage.

Police aim to crack Easter toll POLICE are urging motorists to take a long hard look at their driving behaviour these Easter holidays after a record high road toll is reported for 2016 already. Tragically 49 people have lost their lives on Queensland roads during the first two and a half months of 2016. With this year’s road toll already 10 more than the same time last year, Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating of the Road Policing Command said safer driving habits will make a significant difference to road safety, and the road toll. “Every person lost on a Queensland road is a tragedy of unimaginable proportions ... changing driver behaviour and habits can and does make a difference,” he said.

Arresting result A LOCAL school deputy has answered a friend’s call for help and has been “arrested” for his efforts. Noosaville State School deputy principal Wayne Carty has spent nearly a week behind bars in a bid to raise funds and awareness for the school’s chaplain Michelle Gamerio. Much-loved school chappy has been searching for fund-raising ideas to keep her greatly needed talents and services to the Noosaville students. Without the funds, she must reduce her hours at the school, starting next term, and that’s unthinkable for those who have come to know and love her for the past few years. After a lot of discussion, Mr Carty decided to respond to the call for help and has been locked up in a cell for the past week and hopes to be released on Thursday 24 March in time for school holidays. Last Friday 18 March, Constable Murray Sandilands and Senior Constable Tara Kermond were on hand with students, teachers and supporters to make sure Mr Carty was comfortable in the confines of his cell. “It’s all for a great cause, and I’m happy to get behind the fund-raising cause for our chappy Michelle,” Mr Carty said. “She’s an amazing part of our school, and we want our kids to know she’s there when their needs arise.” As for the chappy herself, Michelle says chaplains are in schools to meet the humanitarian needs of the school community. “As chaplain, my role takes on many forms,” she said. “I provide a free breakfast program each morning and offer one on one as well as group social skills programs.

Bread and water for Mr Wayne Carty as Constable Murray Sandilands, chaplain Michelle Gamerio, Mary McMahon, Wayne Hoens and Senior Constable Tara Kermond look on. “I also support students and families through their many issues including grief and loss, financial difficulties and isolation. “I believe each child is precious and that we need to value children by encouraging, listening and supporting them through life’s toughest challenges.” Michelle said she hoped the fundraiser would not only raise money but awareness also. “It’s all about highlighting the fact that chaplaincy is a vital part of our school and needs support from our community to exist,” she said. “The fact that our deputy Wayne Carty has committed to supporting this

cause is proof of that and is testament to the great fellow he is.” The Tewantin Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank and its manager Wayne Hoens kicked off the fundraiser with a donation of $1000 in the hope of inspiring other Noosa businesses to do the same. “Mr Carty’s commitment is fantastic, and we’re very happy to get behind this great cause and supporting Michelle,” Mr Hoens said. At the time of print, about $4000 has been raised. Personal or local business donations can be made by contacting Noosaville State School on 5440 3222 or Chappy Michelle on 0405 395 399.

AFTER their success in 2015, Sunshine Beach State School is again preparing to tell their story in the 2016 National Wakakirri Story and Dance Competition. Wakakirri is Australia’s largest Performing Arts event for schools, involving over 20,000 students across every state and territory each year. Sunshine Beach State School teacher Adam Bruin said Wakakirri provided students an opportunity to develop skills and to be empowered by performing on a professional stage to a large audience. In 2015 the team’s performance, “Who’s Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf”, featured Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, but not as the classic fairy-tale intended. Their story dance won the Art House Award, and received acclaim for their use of costuming, staging and imagery. Year 5 student Naire said she loved being a part of the 2015 performance and was looking forward

to performing again this year. “Last year’s performance was so exciting,” she said. “I loved every part of it; rehearsals, the costumes, the makeup, preforming on stage, everything - it was just absolutely fantastic. “I have made great friendships through the team and we really support and encourage each other.” This year, the students are busy preparing their story which will have a Latin dance flavour, choreographed by Sunshine Beach State School parent, Maria Hull, which will be performed at the Caloundra Events Centre in August. Along with other Sunshine Coast schools, they will be vying for awards in design, choreography, characterization and a host of other team awards. The Sunshine Beach State School Wakakirri team can’t wait to showcase their Performing Arts to the community.

It’s all about the property THERE'S nothing about the property market that the team at Luxe Commercial doesn’t enjoy. The underlying passion and market knowledge across the team comes from the top down as founder Chris Sales goes from strength to strength after opening the niche agency in February 2015. At 30 years of age, Chris has been in small business since leaving school, driven by an old-school work ethic and contemporary desire to do things differently. “I felt there was an opportunity to offer a level of service and a product that wasn’t offered anywhere else and that by exceeding client expectations when it came to service, we would achieve proven results,” Chris said. Chris launched the boutique agency with two staff and a laser-like focus on service, sophistication and style traditionally associated with the residential market. A little more than 12 months later the team has grown to incorporate a team of six full-time employees. The expansion has enabled Luxe to service the sales, leasing and property management needs of the entire Sunshine Coast.

Luxe Commercial’s new Noosa sales and leasing director Darren Neal has five years’ experience in Melbourne’s commercial market, relocating to Noosa Heads for lifestyle and new opportunities. Passionate about people and all water sports, particularly wakeboarding and kiteboarding, Darren says his arrival in Noosa coincided with a market that was on the rise. He said commercial conditions were steadily improving across all commercial sectors on the back of low interest rates, thriving tourism numbers and a lack of quality listings. “Noosa is more popular than ever from an investor point of view,” Darren said. “Everything they want or need is here; the lifestyle is second to none, access is easy and there are plenty of opportunities to create or build a business. “It’s proving popular for investors and tenants whether they’re mum and dad investors, developers or large-scale retailers. It’s an exciting time to be in Noosa.” To see how Luxe Commercial can help you, phone 5493 6652.

Holiday homes debate hots up By MEGAN OGLE

Leanne Walsh and Sandy Bolton are on the winning side of inclusive sports.

New sports plan kicking goals cer, tennis, volleyball, cricket, hockey, yoga, basketball, obstacle courses, tunnel ball, targets and many more. Sunshine Butterflies CEO and founder Leanne Walsh said the All Sports Program provided “exhilarating and safe” activities for members. “I would like to thank Sandy Bolton for helping launch our new program. She is a compassionate advocate for many community groups and we are very grateful for her ongoing support and friendship,” Ms Walsh said. “Increasing participation in physical activity has both health and social benefits and can provide a better quality of life for any person living with a disability.” The program is supported by the Noosa Pirates Rugby Club who provide the use of their grounds, every Wednesday afternoon from 4.30pm. Image: CONTRIBUTED say once they have heard all the facts from all sides.” Noosa River Retreat Resort manager Andrea Stokje agreed with Ms Schwerin, saying the issue was “thought provoking” for “all residents” and urged residents to “work together” on issues. A council candidate weighed in on the issue with Elaine Williams saying owners should have a “right to live” in a residence “if they choose to”. “I support our local residents,” Ms Williams said. “Tourists are important; however we must remember that Noosa Shire is not just for tourists.” While the Tourism Noosa

Annual Report estimated over 1.9 million tourists visited Noosa between 2014 and 2015, spending over $703 million with $77 million spent on day trips alone, Ms Williams said the local dollar was not to be overlooked. “Last night when out to dinner in Thomas Street, everyone dining at our chosen restaurant was a local (which) is often the case during the week and in non-peak times,” Ms Williams said. “Before going out to dinner, we spent time and money at our sporting club along with many other locals. “Without the locals as active members, there can be no clubs such as RSL and sporting etc.”

A LOCAL charity is kicking goals with the launch of a new sports program aimed at getting kids active in a supportive atmosphere. Cr Sandy Bolton helped kick-start the brand new All Sports program, run by non-for-profit organisation and local charity Sunshine Butterflies. “Physical well-being is part of feeling good. When you do it together as a community, everyone benefits,” Cr Bolton said. The weekly modified sports, games and fitness program provides participants an opportunity to partake in a wide range of sporting activities at their own pace, in a fun and supportive environment. Activities are led by qualified support mentors and fitness co-ordinators and have been designed to improve self-confidence, encourage self-expression, educate on health and nutrition and are open to all age groups. There are sports and activities available to support all types of disabilities, levels of ability and activity interests. AN online debate has reached boiling point after a recent story by Noosa Today was posted on a social media site. Noosa residents took to the Noosa Today Facebook page to voice their opinions on the issue of permanent residents living in holiday accommodation with one local calling for a public forum. The original story outlined concerns of local accommodation managers wanting to see action taken by the council in regards to owners permanently residing in holiday accommodation which they feared would impact theirs and Noosa’s income from tourists. Debbie Schwerin commented on the Noosa Today post, saying the volume of comments “proved there are some real community issues [here] which need to be solved”. “Great to see so many have an opinion on this issue,” Ms Schwerin wrote. “However, instead of shouting at each other and making it an Us versus Them thing, the new council should consider a public forum where those who are really interested in this problem can have their

NOOSA District State High School (NDSHS) Year 12 school captain Matthew Craigie won the Sunshine Coast District level of national competition Lions Youth of the Year. Matthew has competed successfully in three rounds so far to secure a place at Gladstone for the Regional Finals, which will be held in early April. The competition consists of a half hour interview with a panel of judges asking leadership and general knowledge questions. Contestants are then asked to perform two impromptu speeches and a five-minute prepared speech to allow judges to finalise the most outstanding young leader and speaker. Matthew’s key speech touches on the crucial role science plays in Australia’s development and standard of living and how as a nation,

LETTERS Some weeding I AM puzzled by the person who apparently lives at Noosa Banks and regularly removes weeds (commonly known as “Cobbler’s Pegs“) from beside the pathway along McKinnon Drive and elsewhere, and leaves the plants strewn all over the pathway. Why just this particular weed and not others? What are you trying to achieve? If you are trying to prevent future regeneration, then leaving the weeds strewn over the footpath will not achieve this. The seeds already on the plants will simply wash, or be blown, into the surrounding areas and will be the source of the next “’crop“ of weeds. If you are trying to do your civic duty by endeavouring to keep the area free of the weeds, then why not do it properly. Take a plastic bag or other suitable receptacle with you on your walk and dispose of the weeds properly in your rubbish bin when you get home. Leaving the plants strewn over the pathway is akin to littering. Being suddenly confronted by the mess when rounding the bend in the

Under control AS PRESIDENT of the Noosa Biosphere Community Association (NCBA) I would like to clear up some comments which have recently appeared in our local papers. Recent headlines have suggested a situation at the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) which is out of control. As you know our organisation, NCBA, is the community arm of the Biosphere and independent of the NBRF. However, the NBRF has the strategic responsibility for the UNESCO relationship and a prime role to raise money and fund great projects in our biosphere. As part of the new Noosa Biosphere framework, it is true that it has taken the NBRF some considerable time to understand its role and set up the necessary procedures. As an example we have received NBRF funding for our exciting “engagement project“

to explain the biosphere concept to the community. We are launching this shortly, but it has taken considerable time and effort to get this approved. We encourage the community to join with us in making this project a success. In view of the articles, I want you to know that we are working with the NBRF to get improved processes in place and things are improving. We believe that the last thing we need is another change of organisation, which I am sure you understand. Let us make what we have work well. If you would like to join our growing band of membership numbers, membership is free. You will find a membership application form on our website this is at http://noosacba.org and you can contact us at noosaCBA@gmail. com Dick Barnes, Noosa Community Biosphere Association.

Closing the gap HOW is it the Sunshine Coast including the Noosa Biosphere Reserve to the north, sup-

posedly possessing the second highest use of Aboriginal words for place names within Queensland, has no Kabi Kabi Traditional Owner Ranger program? Here we are with our own Ulurus and icons like Mount Coolum, the Glasshouse Mountains and the traditional ‘Bunya Country’ areas along the coastal lowlands and range, and yet we are lacking a full-time dedicated Working on Country program. National Closing the Gap Day has just passed and it has been 25 years since the Aboriginal Deaths in Custody Report with its 300-plus recommendations for actions, to help reverse the sinister impacts of colonisation. The lack of long-term commitment for such a ranger program (which can include Indigenous Land Use Agreements) supporting Kabi Kabi Traditional Owners to Care for Country or Work on Country and develop sustainable enterprises in heritage conservation, eco-cultural tourism and education, has a rank whiff of racism and indifference about it. With Aboriginal ranger programs already established for some time just to the north, south and west, (and with research showing there are strong economic benefits) why not for the Sunshine Coast and Noosa Biosphere Reserve? For more information about these programs and issues please go to the Country Needs People website. Genevieve Jones, Coolum Beach.

Mucking in HAVING just read about the new rules for tuck shop food; I recall my Secondary Modern Education schooling in the UK from five years of age to 15 years of age (1943/1953). Mum paid seven shillings and sixpence a week for me and each of my two siblings (half a crown each) to have a lunchtime hot cooked meal plus a “pudding“. These were prepared by the dinner ladies under the charge of the headmaster’s wife. The teachers also joined us in the assembly hall for these meals and the children who didn’t have the money never missed out. That’s where we also learnt how to clean and wash up after a meal. This was during the later parts of the war. Going home after school if still “peckish“ there was always a sandwich of lard, dripping or buttered bread spread with sugar. Of course then always downed with a glass of full cream milk. Not the water we get today for $2 from the supermarkets. Lollies (sweets) were on coupons and I will never forget watching a schoolmate eat a banana (the first I had seen) and not share it. No Maccas or fast food chains then, so perhaps that’s the reason we won the war. The dieticians of today mean well but should aim their sights at the growers and suppliers of enhanced flavoured modified foods. All these pass the inspection of “health inspectors“ before hitting the shelves. “Organic” - sorry, but nothing beats food grown in good old garden soil with plenty of muck dug in. E. Wright, Sunrise Beach.

Hey big spenders

1214710-EG12-16

12 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 24 March, 2016

RAY Kelly is right in lamenting in the media Sunday 20 March that “low budget campaigns like his could no longer compete”. If the trend towards big spending campaigns continues this will limit those independents without a network of donors standing for election in local government areas. Local government is the last political bastion of community involvement by way of election to local councils. Local council is where independents can become part of the process, without the big pockets of political parties or business financing their campaigns. It is a pity that disclosed funding for the mayoral candidates as released in Friday’s local newspaper was not released before prepolling started. From this we were able to find that of the mayoral candidates Tony Wellington’s donations totalling $8500 with the exemption of $500 from Halse Lodge which came from private citizens. Next we had Sandy Bolton’s donations including an input by Sandy for $5000 totalling $35,884, much of this coming from business or people with business interests. One was a donation for $10,000, another $5000, both of these from business interests. These seem to be very large sums for a business to donate to a mayoral candidate. Hopefully any mayor Noosa ever elects will be very careful, and strong enough to reject any pressure which could be put on them as a return for money donated. Noosa will be watching. NOW the elections are out of the way we can start thinking of the biggest event of the year, the Rio Olympic Games. Now only five months away and will be a good breather before we all get to vote again in the Federal Election. Hopefully watching our own Coast athletes doing their best against the world's elite will give us all some inspiration. With a bit of luck the Coast could have up to 20 athletes/coaches in action, with Noosa’s Brittany Elmslie, Larissa Crummer and Shara Gillow on centre stage. The Coast's sporting boundaries are clearly defined Caboolture to Gympie, and it was great to see Gympie crowned A Grade Cricket Premiers after 2 years of runner-up. Okay, back to the Games. Former Noosa swimmer Jake Packard is also in the running of wearing the green and gold. I remember the first ever big meet the

suggesting a wider and shallower pool. All in the effort to pander to royal lifesaving, forgo the Olympic standard which if successful would have seen the withdrawal of funds, as the grant was for an Olympic-standard facility. The Olympic swimming trials aren’t far away and with a bit of luck we could easily see 10 swimmers plus two coaches named. The biggest surprise so far is the success of the Buderim Archery Club who at present have four athletes zeroing in on selection. Not bad when you consider there is eight left in contention. Current World Indoor champion Ryan Tyack from Mapleton is leading the way in the boys, while 16-year-old Ella Byrne is holding down second spot. Tewantin's Brittany Elmslie has been there before and knows what it takes to book a seat on the Qantas jet, but for apprentice plumber Larissa Crummer it would be a dream come true. Cyclist Shara Gillow has competed on the world stage for years but a second Olympics will be cream on the cake. Until next time

then new Noosa Aquatic Centre conducted in late 1999. Several national heroes and future Olympic hopefuls were in action at the end of a week-long AIS training camp. The two highlights for me, a 14-year-old Leisel Jones from Morayfield touching out her idol Samantha Riley in the 100 breastroke. Leisel of course went on to become the greatest women's breaststroke champ in Australian history. The pool's 1500 metres superstar Kieren Perkins stood for at least an hour signing autographs and having his photo taken by anyone who asked. It really was a great day, and credit goes to the diligent volunteers like Tony Frost, Joe Gilbert and their team who fought tooth and nail to have the complex built in its current position. Not forgetting new Mayor Bob Abbot who also supported the building of the complex, which at one stage looked doomed, with a push to construct a smaller venue at Wallace Park. What a disaster that would have been, although a near guard action after the election, had one councillor urging council to change the refiguration

Rory down memory lane A retail strata investment in the Sunshine Beach village has sold at auction for almost $1 million.

Fetched almost $1m A TENANTED retail strata investment in the tightly held Sunshine Beach village has sold at auction for almost $1 million. Lots 1 and 2 at 56 Duke Street, Sunshine Beach, which has XO Cellars as a long-term tenant has been sold to a local investor by Ray White Commercial Noosa and Sunshine Coast North’s John Petralia and Paul Butler. The 88sq m tenancy with a 48sq m exclusive use area was sold on behalf of an out-of-town investor for a yield of 6.1 per cent. “We had very strong interest during the marketing campaign for this investment opportunity with 38 inquiries and two offers prior to auction,” Mr Petralia said. “The on-site auction attracted 10 registered bidders and people flew from Melbourne and many others drove up from

Brisbane to attend.” Mr Petralia said there was keen bidding with the property going on the market when bidding reached $980,000 and selling under the hammer for $990,000. Mr Butler said one of the attractions of the property was that the tenant had also installed a third party ATM machine in the shop front.

Rory with wife Janneke and son Banjo.

“This attracts customers to the business as well as generates additional income for the tenant via a transaction rebate,” Mr Butler said. “There are also two exclusive use car parks.” The commercial strip in Sunshine Beach is tightly held, and with its mix of restaurants and village feel, it is a popular destination for diners, locals and holiday-makers.

rory A CUPPA with … Rory Williamson, sales agent for R and W Noosa. 1. Tell us something most people don’t know about you? I speak Mandarin. Well not exactly, I once did a commercial for VW in China where I had to speak the local tongue; you could say I wasn’t a natural. My wife thought it would be funny to post it on Facebook and now it’s been shared by all. Not so funny! 2. What has been the most memorable moment of your life to date? When our little boy Banjo was born, who just turned three this week. We hope there is another one soon. 3. What do you like most about living/ working in Noosa? Noosa is a paradise. I’ve been coming up here since I was three, when Barry’s on the Beach was the only restaurant on Laguna Bay. So many things make this a truly unique place; its natural beauty, world class beaches, an outstanding national park, the climate and endless dining options.

4. Where do you think Noosa property prices will go over the next few years? A lot of the industry heavyweights have predicted that the Sunshine Coast will rise steadily over the next few years, they present good value compared to the Sydney and Melbourne markets. It seems to me that a lot of people who usually invest in Sydney and Melbourne are now looking north. My view is that Noosa is placed well to outperform other markets in the Sunshine Coast, due to a number of factors; there’s strong demand and a lack of stock. Of course, there’s the ever dwindling amount of land available. It augurs well for a strong future.

5. Where is your favourite place in Noosa? Little Cove is a special spot. And, of course, Sails Restaurant at sunset isn’t bad either. 6. What attracted you to a career in property? I started in property years ago by attempting to flip (renovate) my first ever purchase, what I affectionately called Bondi’s smallest apartment, my friends called it the dungeon. It was south facing, no light and tiny, but it was all we could afford. My wife and I had zero experience with renovating, but we transformed it and sold for a profit 18 months later. So we did it again, and again. I fell in love with the industry, moved into real estate and the rest is history. 7. You are hosting a dinner party and can invite six guests, dead or alive. Who would they be? Obama, Daniel Day Lewis, Robin Williams, David Bowie, Gandhi, Ricky Gervais ... .And I’d have to invite my wife Janneke, she’d never forgive me. 8. What has been your most embarrassing moment to date? When I was acting for a living many years ago in Sydney, I was doing a theatre show at one of Sydney’s main stages. We’d had a successful 11-week run with no hiccups and on the final night we had a packed out audience. The show had been a big hit so I thought, “Let’s just have some fun tonight” and as I walked out for my opening line I completely dried and lost my lines. Embarrassing and terrifying! I got back on track eventually, but it was an eye opener. As soon as you think you’ve totally mastered something, is the moment you’ve lost it.

Good Vibes: Benjy Pocock, Vaughan Jones, Soni Pocock and Will Pascoe.

Perfect Vibe for Easter CELEBRATE Easter with two crowd favourites performing live at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club. Kick off Easter Saturday with Noosa’s own The Vibe who will lay down their unique blend of traditional country, blues, southern rock and folk music. The Vibe return to their roots as they perform originals inspired by music from their youth heavily influenced by country music and blues played on their own terms. The Vibe have been very busy of late; the last few years have been jam packed with gigs all over the sunshine coast, and 2016 looks to be an even bigger year as they plan to hit the recording studio to record their first album in over 10 years.

You will also find the band playing at all the major festivals throughout Queensland this year including Gympie Muster and Urban Country. With a plethora of musical tastes and backgrounds The Vibe shows no limitations with their writing ability and style. But don’t rest too much on Easter Sunday with the much-loved Rooftop Duo taking to the stage to round out the weekend. The duo, Col Meredith and Grant Byrne, are resident favourites at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club and are ready to rock you into the public holiday with their crowd-pleasing melodies. Rooftop play the songs of the 60’s and 70’s

with Col on vocals, harmonica and acoustic guitar, and Grant on vocals, bass guitar and percussion. Together, the two belt out a sound that makes one wonder where the other musicians are hiding. Embracing the songs of Neil Young, Cat Stevens, CCR, the Stones, Doors, Dylan, The Rooftop Duo do tremendous justice to the original recordings. Head to the Sunshine Beach Surf Club on Saturday 26 March at 3pm to catch The Vibe, and on Sunday 27 March from 3pm you could groove along to The Rooftop Duo. For more information head to www.sunshinebeachslsc.com.au or call the club on 5447 5491.

The Rooftop Duo bring back the free-love era this Easter Sunday.

Noosa takes shape in print ONCE upon a time not so long ago, there was a kingdom of sand at the edge of a sea. For many years, no one cared very much about the kingdom, except for its villagers because they lived there. The kingdom was a place of sandy beaches, secluded coves and deep blue-green waters. Every day was pretty much like the next, and the next day was pretty much like the one that followed after. Until one day when some careless opportunists came to the kingdom. They told the villagers that they could be a lot happier if their kingdom had

Four thousand hectares of natural bush and a few winding tracks leading to those unspoilt headlands for the entire world to enjoy. This remarkable story is available at Noosaville Library. River Deck among top 10 for unbeatable weddings NOOSA'S very own River Deck Restaurant has been recognised as one of the top 10 wedding vendors in Australia at a recent award night. On Monday 14 March, Australia’s most creative and professional wedding vendors congregated at the Marriott Resort on the Gold Coast to celebrate the 2016 Designer of Dreams Awards. Hosted by the Australian Bridal

Industry Academy (ABIA), the Designer of Dreams Awards honour wedding vendors who have consistently delivered excellence every year for the past four consecutive years. Over 96,000 newlyweds ranked, rated and evaluated the quality of product, quality of service, value for money and attitude of staff of 3200 wedding businesses, culminating in 249 Final-

ists who competed for Australia’s most prestigious wedding industry award. A total of 249 Finalists were announced at the gala event, which included River Deck Restaurant, who came sixth overall. ABIA chairman John O’ Meara said the River Deck Restaurant should be extremely proud of the accomplishment which honoured the pride, passion and profession-

alism in which they delivered their product and service to their brides and grooms. “[The] River Deck Restaurant who have demonstrated the business skills and the determination to excel and exceed expectations are those who will continue to strive and thrive into the future in what is a fiercely competitive marketplace,” he said.

NOW that the festive season is a distant memory, and it is tempting to talk about food again, this little gem will have you racing over to the Noosa Farmers' Market for all the key ingredients to experiment with your own “bits on sticks”. John McLeay has turned skewering into a culinary art form in Bits on Sticks, and you don’t have to be a gourmet to try his ideas. I loved this book because instead of “cheating” and buying those pre-prepared meat skewers from the supermarket, I can spoil my friends and guests by thinking about and spending some time on the menu. These tasty bits are the

perfect way to add style to an existing barbecue menu or just do canapes or starters. They can be a tapas-style meal, or you can go all out and make different recipes the feature of each course. They look colourful and appetising on a platter and are great conversation starters due to their originality. The best bit (no pun in-

tended) is that all this kitchen prep isn’t labour intensive or requiring a thousand ingredients. Most of the time is spent waiting for the marinades to ooze deliciously into your selected meats, fishes or vegs which means you can get everything ready before the guests arrive, and spend some quality time with them instead of being trapped in the kitchen. Whip up sauces before or at serving time and grill or barbecue when it’s time to eat. Bits on Sticks is fun, easily mastered and available at Noosa Library. Review submitted by SuzAnne King, of Friends of Noosa Library, where this book is available.

WHEN you hear the words “Mr Jones and Me” you could be forgiven for thinking of the song made popular by the Counting Crows in the 90s. However, Paul and Ferne Lammens give the words a new meaning with their locally inspired Cafe Bar and Grill named after the song. Mr Jones and Me owners Paul and Ferne established the muchloved restaurant after settling in Noosa 12 months ago, and have poured their hearts into the development of the local hotspot. “Paul and I met many years ago and ‘Mr Jones and Me’ was the first song we danced to,” Ferne said. “When we were driving around looking for a site for our restaurant the song came on the radio and we knew it had to be the name.” Ferne and Paul fell in love with the location of their soon-to-be restaurant and after a short fit-out revealed the new-look restaurant mid last year. “We wanted to design a place for the locals, they’re our main focus, and we wanted to create somewhere they could come and relax time and time again.” Now nine months old, Mr Jones and Me is a restaurant designed by locals for locals which suits all budgets and moods. “Anyone can afford to come here, we have an array of menu options for all budgets; from affordable burgers to 100-day grain

CARAVANS & TRAILERS

IT WAS at the tender age of 10 that the love of music for Gary Trim first really took hold. “That is when I joined the Tuggerah Lakes Brass Band,” he said, “and learned to play and read music. “It is funny,” he added with a laugh, “I started on the cornet but the band master came to me and said you are a dammed awful cornet player so I suggest you learn the drums. “I took his advice and he was right. Now 64 years later I still play but, mind you, it is quietly at home in a back room with my drum kit.” Born in Manly in 1942, Gary grew up with the Manly boys’ love of swimming and surfing. His family shifted to the Central Coast when he was nine and it was here that his career in music took hold. “Life in a brass band was, at that stage, a great learning experience for young guys like me. “We learned the meaning of discipline, respect and, most important of all, I started to learn to read music. “In those days most drummers couldn’t read music. Later on as my career progressed the importance of being a drummer who could become a big thing.” The Tuggerah band was highly regarded and competed all over NSW. “One thing we specialized in was competition marching while playing the instruments. It is not as easy as it looks. “During these times we competed against military bands and in the late ’50s we took part in two military tattoos in the Sydney Showgrounds. It was all a great experience.” Garys first major move came when, as a 14-year-old, he joined up as a drummer with the rock and roll band, Tommy and the Tornadoes. “We were together for six or seven years and it was great. “We did all sorts of gigs including TV work on the Don Lane and Dave Allen shows. “There was plenty of work and in particular Christmas time. It was nothing to do six and seven nights a week. “A good thing about all that work was that, as a young bloke, there wasn’t a lot of spare time to get into trouble so it kept them “on the straight and narrow”. As a result of his all-round capabilities both in reading music and as a professional drummer, Gary took several young drummers under his wing and started to teach. “Some of them,” said Gary, “went into the armed forces and joined their bands. In fact, one of them is still at it up in Townsville. “There is one gig that I will never forget. It was back in the late ’60s and I worked as a drummer for the Eddie Ash Travelling Ice Show. “We would set up for four or five days in country towns. The show would consist of ice skaters, comedian and a singer. To say the least it was certainly different.” Among their many gigs they supported bigger groups such as Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, Johnny O’Keefe, Dig Richards, Col Joy and the

Following his stint with the Tornadoes he took the job as resident drummer for the Tuggerah Memorial RSL Club and also on occasions as the relief drummer for Balmain Leagues Club and Saint George Central Coast. “I stayed as resident drummer for 13 years. After that I started working full time as a relief drummer in the club circuit in Sydney. “On one occasion while working at the Chequers night club in Sydney, I was the support drummer for Shirley Bassey. “All these types of gigs were great experience and I was always learning. “However during these years I made sure I also got myself a day job and at 25 moved into the insurance industry. “The reason for this was that I saw a lot of the professional drummers doing it tough, so I made sure I kept a day job that also had a possible future.” For Gary this was definitely a move in the right direction. Now apart from his music, he can look back on a successful career of some 33 years in the insurance game, having his own insurance brokage and working as a financial planner. Also during this time Gary won a major Australian award sponsored by Natural Mutual Insurance. The prize for this was a trip to America. On arrival he underwent an intense 10 day advanced management training course. “It certainly was a great experience and a trip well worth taking. “However before becoming heavily involved in the world of insurance I seriously considered joining the Australian Navy. “Because of my love of the sea and, in particular free diving, I became serious about a career as a clearance diver. I was being taught by an ex- British navy Commando diver. “However during this time I suffered an ear injury and this was the end of my dreams of becoming a navy diver.” Like all professional musicians Gary had those he looked up to and was inspired by. “I would say that as a very young boy I was impressed by the great Gene Kruper, the man who really bought jazz drumming to the forefront. “Then in later years it was the unbelievable Buddy Rich. Rich in his prime was classed as the fastest drummer in the world - a real freak. “But the man that I really took notice of was the famous rock and roll artist Bill Haley. In my opinion a man ahead of his time.” For Gary and his wife Sandy, now living together in retirement at Doonan, their meeting

LOCAL women rocked the stage at the annual fund-raiser to celebrate International Women’s Day. The J played host to the Local Women Rock concert on Tuesday 8 March, which showcased the best local female artists and raised funds for a local women’s shelter. MC Cherry Bright said the audience was awash with green and purple, the colours of the suffragettes, and were greeted by the Steel Mamas at the door. “The show was absolutely fabulous and the crowd knew they were in for a great fun-filled afternoon as soon as they walked in,” Ms Bright said.

42 NOOSA TODAY | Thursday, 24 March, 2016

“We were entertained by talented women from start to finish.” The show was opened by 12-year-old singer Angelique Turner who was followed by an even younger singer, eight-yearold Madeleine Suttee. Audiences were also treated to the divine vocals of Cara Robinson and Andrea Kirwin, as well as a hilarious comedy act by The Cherry Ripes. The show rounded off with a fabulous dance performance by Burlesque L’Amour, which features dancers aged between 20 and 80.

and eventual partnership was the stuff movies are made of. They first met when Gary, at age 14 as a commercial traveller, used to call on her family general store, situated in The Entrance Sydney. In the years ahead they continually crossed paths because, apart from the business aspect, Sandys father Salzon, was also the pianist at the local RSL Club where Gary was the drummer. “Sandy was 10 when we first met,” said Gary “but our lives took different paths. She became a ballerina, but later changed to various styles, eventually concentrating on modern entertainment dancing then later on, with her partner who was top class, they toured Europe and the U.K. “Also, during her career she travelled to Vietnam dancing for the Diggers and the Yanks. “And, believe it or not,” he said with a laugh, “when we finally got together I was 40 and she was 36. I suppose it was meant to be.” Shortly after this, they married and came to Munna Point on their honeymoon. They both fell in love with the place and following Gary’s retirement returned to live in 2000. Both agreed they have never been happier. On arrival Gary ventured back into the world of surf lifesaving by joining the club at Noosa. This was something that had been a major part of his weekends during his youth. Moving around a lot Gary had spent years in three clubs, The Entrance, Toowoon Bay and Shelly Beach. Now, having spent 11 years in Noosa, he is eligible for his Long Service badge. “All up, I have had a total of 21 years as a lifesaver. It’s been great. During my time in Noosa I have been a radio patrolman and March Past team captain and member.’’ As we talked two things came to light that has have given this man much pride. The first is that Gary is a former Past President of Lions International at the Entrance, and a life member of the Association of Apex Clubs Australia. But, most of all, was the work done by his father Jim with the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels and his time on the Kokoda Track as a forward scout. “Dad was a professional solder and after the war he sponsored a fuzzy wuzzy on a trip to Australia so you could say I am very proud of my old man.” Successful careers in music, insurance, Apex and Lions plus years of dedicated service to lifesaving, it’s been a life fully lived for Gary Trim - one of Our People.

A civilised election Life of

brine PHIL JARRATT

IT WAS a warm morning when I went to the Christian Outreach Centre to cast my vote last Friday, but it was the warmth of camaraderie rather than the heat of battle that I felt as I worked my way down the gauntlet of candidates, pressing flesh and kissing cheek as you do, pretending that you’re going to vote for all of them. And in many ways, I wished I could do just that, because I have nothing but admiration for the way the election campaign was conducted, particularly among the serving councillors. As I write (on Monday (21 March) morning the identity of the new mayor is in the balance and the council vote unknown, but I would be fairly confident that Joe Jurisevic and the two Franks, Wilkie and Pardon, will be returned comfortably, as I think they deserve. The saddest part is that while two serving councillors, Sandy Bolton and Tony Wellington, were separated by only a few hundred votes as of Sunday night, only one of them can serve on the new council. If I were a betting man, I’d say that Tony will be mayor by the time you read this, and Sandy will be considering her future, which will be Noosa’s loss, at least for the next four years. I’ve made no secret of my support for Tony, whom I’ve come to know and admire mainly through a couple of years sharing committee work for the Noosa National Surfing Reserve. I find him to be a hard worker, a straight shooter, a committed environmentalist and a renaissance man to boot, whose creative side may not be essential for the dog work of council business but will add an interesting layer to the philosophy of community leadership. For those of you who don’t know, the man who might be mayor writes, paints, shoots noosatoday.com.au

photos and makes movies. These are not hobbies; his work is world class. He has worked in many capacities in the film and television industry, picked up awards and directed and wrote the classic Raw Nerve feature which starred John Polson in the late ‘80s. His book Happy? received rave reviews for its insights into the good and the bad side of the relentless pursuit of happiness. That’s only skirting around the edges of the man’s achievements, so if he misses out this week, consider the above a heartfelt goodbye Tony, and thanks for all the fish! But the unmissable and effervescent Sandy Bolton also has many fine traits, as we’ve seen in the previous council, as we saw in the energy with which she campaigned, and as I’m sure we’ll see if the tide turns these next few days and she becomes mayor. If the tide doesn’t turn, then her many virtues in public office will be lost to us for the immediate future. I think that too would be a shame. BIG NAMES FALL, NEW ONES EMERGE AT THE QUIKSILVER PRO While my hard-working daughters and their diminished team slaved away on the hot sand removing the infrastructure of the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing last week, I slipped down the coast to catch the last couple of days of the season-opening Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks. While the standard of surfing was incredible on the currently not so Superbank, the surprising factor was the number of virtual unknowns dominating proceedings, following the early elimination of superstars like Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and Julian Wilson. I follow the WSL tour pretty closely, but to be honest I knew next to nothing about Lennox Head’s Stu Kennedy, until I saw the injury wildcard smash the biggest turns on the shortest board in the comp (Slater inspired, I hear) to almost win it. He was one of many unknowns and rookies

Winners are grinners: Wilko and Tyler draw first blood of the season at Snapper. Image: WSL. to really shine, but it was great to see the Aussie/Rip Curl double of Matty Wilkinson and Tyler Wright prevail to take out the Quik and Roxy titles. And it was especially moving to see big brother Owen Wright in Tyler’s camp as he struggles to recover from serious head injuries sustained on the North Shore. He’s a strong lad, they’re a strong surfing family. Go Wrights! As social media went euphoric in the aftermath of the Laguna Real Estate Festival of Surfing, it was inevitable that one or two whiners would emerge, but why give them oxygen? To set the record straight re Bobby Aitkin’s letter in this paper last week, he stated: “The powers that be sent all the

‘no-name’ longboarders to surf Access 11 between the rock walls, where the conditions were appalling.” This is entirely false and patently ridiculous. Competitors in virtually every surfing division had to surf heats at the secondary site at Noosa West, due to the fact that First Point was not breaking. The waves were contestable throughout. There were no complaints to the contest director at any stage, but Mr Aitkin, having been eliminated, chose to write a letter to the paper. If it’s any consolation, Bob, I got eliminated from my division in the same conditions, and if there’s anyone who could have influenced the manipulation of the program as you suggest happened, then that would probably be me. Now get over yourself, move on and let’s share a few on First Point next swell. Thursday, 24 March, 2016 | NOOSA TODAY 43

Winners of the day were the mixed team from Kenilworth/Imbil with a Pomona team taking out runners-up. The first semi-final of the Men’s ‘A’ singles championship was played on Friday. A very close game between Bill Alford (2015 champion) and Greg Hodder. With Bill leading for most of the game, Greg had to play catch up bowls and even the score to 23 all. And what a fantastic last end with Greg getting up by two shots. Well done to both players. The ‘A’ final will be played on Saturday 2 April and should

Dodgers too good for Redsox

be a very interesting game between Greg Hodder and Walter Horn. The men’s “B” final will also be played on the same day. Friday Twilight bowls with a new format for selection with both skips and leads picking a paddle pop stick to determine their rink number and partner. Winners on the afternoon were Rob Roebuck and Mel Hobbins with a +16; runners-up David Hands and Jim McDougall with +9. Jackpot not won and carries over. - Kitty and Jack COOROY BOWLS BUSINESS Bowls was washed out. High Rollers: Underwaters 28; BAS 26; RAG 25; Bushrangers 24; Apotukis 22; Galahs 22; Bevans team 22; Eumundi Boys 21; Brows Team 20; Royal Flush 20; Dells team 18; X-Factor 18; Cormorants 14. Open Singles Championships: Five People remain in the competition which is proving to be very successful using the double elimination method. This week’s draw Yvonne Pattinson versus Gwyn Bruce and Bruce Coventry versus Col Nalder. Russell Butler has gone straight to the final undefeated. New players are welcome to the Wednesday Jackpot Pairs every week at 1pm. Fridays in the Cool is at 4pm with quite a few new players in attendance. Come along and enjoy. Now that the Hinterland Local League is finished, we will start the State of Origin again. This has been a highly successful event. The first match will be at Yandina at 1pm on Saturday 2 April. - Jack and Kate

NOOSA SOFTBALL THE rain moved away and the fields came up well for grand final day. The 13s led the way early and it was a hard-fought win to Dodgers over the very competitive Redsox. Sami pulled a double play and was supported by good pitching from Nelson, while Erin, Mitch and Lachie tried hard all day for Redsox. The 15s started with Redsox batting and Ethan got around the bases for their seven run while aided by a safe hit from Riki. The Dodgers were up next and got one run themselves with Jacob getting around the bases one all, a close start to the game. The second innings saw Blake get a safe hit and then steal bases for a run while the Slodgers got three home with showing patience in the batting box. The third innings saw another patient batting effort this time by the Redsox as they got two home and left Jed on base. The response was similar with Dylan and Callum getting home, neither team yet to break the game open. Lachie got on base in the fourth inning and stole home

for one run and the reply was swift by slodgers with Jacob getting a three bagger and was supported by will and Dylan getting home. This was the break they needed as time was running out. Redsox had one last chance but Dylan shut them out and the Slodgers won a great battle. Presentations were held after the games and results can be found on the Facebook page. Congratulations to all the winners as there were many. A quick recap of Queensland softball selections for the year; Luke Thomas (Qld and Australia), Shinai Gibbons (Qld and Aussie Sparks), Riley Murrihy (Qld and Aussie Sparks), Lewis and Charles Schefe (Qld), Shinae Shakespeare (Qld). The club also had four Queensland school representatives; congratulations to all involved. Also Shinai and Shinae were away this weekend playing at the Schoolgirls' State Titles and Shinai was selected again for Queensland. The two girls both gave their all for the team and had a successful weekend.

THE Noosa Eagles were set for a hot one on the last game before the Easter break as they all headed to their games. There were a few losses and also a few wins but, most importantly, the kids all had a great time. Under 8 Gold couldn’t find its mojo on a scorcher of a day and was defeated 4-0 by the Buddina Wahoos. Bonnie Boyes earned herself the nickname Twinkle Toes with some seriously impressive footwork and took home Player of the Match. Under 8 Black was defeated by the Buddina Seagulls 6-0.

then passed to Thompson Nimac who scored the goal and the small crowd of 50 people went wild. James Allan had some great tackles running in defence and took home the Player of the Week. Goals went to Alaska (2) Thomson (1) Own (1). Under 11 Gold was defeated by Chancellor Commandos 1-7. A great game had by all and the heat really taking a toll on all players. An outstanding game was had by Jai Stuart, Tyler Brokamp and Jarrah Kerrigan. The goal was scored by Innocent Sibanda.

Sunshine Reef is probably at its best right now with some sensational coral trout fishing. Sweetlip have also been up there as well as parrot and cod. The outer edges have been the go for pelagics with both tuna and mackerel being accounted for. For those who are lucky enough to own a bigger vessel, the trip to North Reef is well worth it, with snapper, sweetlip and cobia all being reported in that area. While out there it pays to keep an eye on the sounder as schools of ‘yakkas’ (yellow tail scad) are often schooling up around that area. A bait jig ready to go over the side can result in some great baits. These are sensational bait and can be used as a floater or sent straight to the bottom. On the beach front, Noosa’s North Shore is where it’s all been happening. The stretch between the first cutting and the mouth of the Noosa River is holding some nice gutters at the moment and with tailor dart and bream on the chew, this is a great spot to soak a few pilchards.

It was a great effort by all on field but the Seagulls were better on the day and Saxon Sharpe scored the Player of the Match award. Under 9 Black defeated the Nambour Lions 4-0. The defence line of Charlie Drew, Isaac Benjamin, James Allan and Josh Plant played strong and hard and stood its ground while Iggy Gerber, Beau Biddell, Nathan Hindmarsh, Keiran Dow and Jaimen Slavin played a great midfield game. The play of the match which showed great team work was when Jake MacDonald had the ball about 30 meters from goal and passed to Alaska Rosenkranz who

THE Noosa River has been fishing extremely well over the past week and with trevally, tailor, bream and flathead to just name a few. With the recent rains again dirtying up the river, the bait will again make its way towards the saltier water. One location that has been fishing extremely well of late is the lower reaches of the Noosa River. At the mouth, the Frying Pan and the Dog Beach, baitfish gather in schools to feed on all the food flowing down stream and where’s there’s baitfish, there’s big fish! The trick to fishing this area properly is to get down there nice and early or hang around after dark to give yourself the best chance of tangling with some of the bigger fish this river has to offer. Tide is also important so fishing a couple of hours either side of the tide at the same time should see a reward. Jacks, trevally, large bream, and school jew are all on the menu around the mouth of the river. Large flatties and elbow slapper whiting are also on the chew with the dog beach and the Frying Pan some of their favourite haunts. When it comes to bait, live bait is one of the favourite, herring or poddy mullet off the rocks at the mouth and yabbies and live worms off the dog beach and the Frying Pan. For the lure, angler slugs have been going well around the mouth with the Halco Twisty one of the all-time favourites. Surface lures work well around the calmer area like Dog Beach and Frying Pan. Those who were lucky enough to get offshore fishing last weekend found the fish were going off.

49 medals for team Noosa Between the

flags RON LANE

THE hot weather last weekend drew big crowds to our local clubs, and happy to say our visitors both local and tourists returned to their homes safe and sound. On Friday morning at North Burleigh, those clubbies respectfully referred to as the Masters, gathered, to contest the Queensland State Championships. In what coaches described as testing, surf Sunshine and Noosa both contested the Masters. With only a small team of six ladies and two men, Sunshine did extremely well to come home with a total of 18 medals. This was one of the smallest teams in the carnival and their results speak for themselves. For Noosa, a big club which entered one of their biggest teams ever, their results were exceptional. They finished the day

with a total of 49 medals. This tally saw them finish in second place overall in the state behind Alexandra Headlands. It is good to see our two clubs contest these events as it gives our golden oldies a competitive interest in their club. With so many young guns coming up through the ranks, the presence of the older members is of the utmost importance because in a good club they can often serve as a steadying influence. So even though Sunshine Beach is a small club, the Masters presence is vital and necessary in the club’s future. In the U/17 to Opens category held over the weekend, Sunshine again went well, finishing with nine medals; two gold, three silver and four bronze. Perhaps, the most pleasing aspect of their results was the fact that the majority of their medals were team events; in particular the taplin and the swim. This gives a good indication as to the depth of good members coming through the ranks.

To achieve such results, plus their results in the champion life saver and the patrol competition, contested last month, speaks volumes for the all-round standard of the club. Congratulations to all involved. Noosa once again fielded a big team and their effort gave their club the best results ever; finishing the titles with eight gold, nine silver and eight bronze. Head coach Darren Mercer said, “I am really proud to see everybody working together as a team, and this includes the parents.” The final overall tally in a field of 53 clubs saw Noosa finish in sixth place and Sunshine Beach in eight. This is definitely very pleasing for both. When you take into consideration that these are the two clubs that are responsible for the beach safety of tourists who visit two of the most popular beaches in the state, it gives you a nice warm feeling. For Noosa there is the attraction of being a nice safe family beach and over at Sunshine you have the open beach concept; this can give the surfer great

body surfing and board riding. Everything the tourist can desire. Let us hope that those in the tourism industry appreciate this and acknowledge the standard and the vital role that the lifesavers of today play in their industry. No lifesavers, no safety, no mums and dads. Apart from the medal count, there have been two major points of interest. One is the fact that the performance of the U/17 age group in both clubs has been outstanding. The other is that the Noosa U/23 boat crew won the gold medal, thus keeping alive the tradition of boats in the club that was started way back in 1949. Last week, family, friends and

representatives of the business and sporting communities, gathered to bid a sad farewell to Robert Henry Borger, affectionately known to one and all as Bob. On behalf of the Life Members and members of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, I extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family. Some years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Bob, when as club president I had the privilege of receiving Bob’s company Viridian as our major patrol sponsor. Apart from the business side, this quiet, soft spoken man and I became good friends. As the Life Governor of the Noosa club and above all your club mate, your company was our pleasure. Gone but not forgotten.

Noosa SLSC beach squad shines at state comp By GEN FRASER NOOSA SLSC beach squad came away with three State Champions and two State silver medallists at the Surf Lifesaving State Titles held at North Burleigh on the weekend. “We knew we were in the running to do well and focused on areas that needed work in the weeks leading up to the Titles,” Beach Sprint coach Omar Bakhach said. “I’m super proud of all of them.” The state carnival brings together surf lifesaving competitors from as far away as Cairns to battle it out for the honour of being the top athletes in their chosen events. Among the top level athletes eager to test their speed and skill on the beach were the Noosa Heads SLSC junior beach sprint team, comprising competitors from U11 to U14 years of age. The medal haul included Gold medals in the U12 female beach relay and individual female sprints; Gold in the U13 female beach relay; Silver in the U14 female beach relay; and Silver in the U13 individual male sprints. noosatoday.com.au
