A KITTENS bouncer was placed on a two-year community-based order after pleading guilty to stalking and threatening a stripper by pressing an illegal handgun against her face in Hallam. Patrick Iaulualo, 21, of Hampton Park, had initially denied the 19-year-old victim’s claims they had a brief affair and that after its demise he stalked, threatened and pulled a gun on her in his car on Australia Day night. From the start, he admitted to police to owning the unregistered .22 calibre gun and 150 rounds of matching ammunition found in his car’s back seat. Iaulualo told police he was armed out of fear of outlaw motorcycle gang members after shots were fired at his South Melbourne workplace in November. According to police, the married father-of-two phoned the alleged victim, then visited her at a Hallam house on 26 January. CCTV footage showed Iaulualo driving up and down the street several times before visiting the former work colleague. The victim agreed to speak in Iaulualo’s car, where he allegedly pulled the gun and placed the barrel against her face. He pressed a button and activated a red laser on the weapon, the victim told police. At that stage, the victim allegedly feared she would be shot and begged to go home. Fifteen minutes later, Iaulualo followed the victim’s car.
During the drive, he rang to say: “I feel like I’m letting you go too easy“, the court heard. He allegedly instructed her to pull into a servo or he’d shoot her tyres. CCTV footage showed the accused approach the victim’s car and sit in the passenger seat. Iaulualo was later seen pacing up and down as he was locked out of the service station, the court was told. The following day, police intercepted Iaulualo in his car with the loaded gun and ammunition. Defence lawyer Roona Nida told the court that Iaulualo had been attacked in custody by prisoners with bikie gang links on 19 March. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen took into account a favourable psycholgical report that noted Iaulualo’s remorse and insight. It stated the accused was at low risk of reoffending. Mr Vandersteen told Iaulualo he had been “naive“ and “out of his depth“ at Kittens. Instead he should focus on the strong support from family and friends, including his wife. “I can’t see you using that gun. “You’ve drifted. And drifted in a big way in the last few months.“ He jailed Iaulualo for 57 days - which had already been served in remand - on top of the supervised corrections order. The accused was warned that if he breached the order - or the intervention order protecting the victim - he would face a substantial jail term.

Council moves to protect growing city from infrastructure black hole Council has made the responsible decision to apply for a rate cap variation of 0.97%, or $14 per household, to enable key infrastructure projects to continue to meet the needs of Casey’s growing community. After signalling its intent to seek a variation in January, the City of Casey has now submitted its application to the Essential Services Commission (ESC) to vary the 2.5% cap being imposed on Councils by 0.97%. Council has a detailed 10-year mOBODJBM QMBO JO QMBDF UP NFFU changing service demands, but the imposed rate cap will effectively leave a $168 million shortfall over this period alone. AN INQUEST HAS HEARD THAT INTELLIGENCE SERVICE OFFICERS FAILED TO PASS ON VITAL INFORMATION. CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS REPORTS.
Anti-terror detective tells court ‘spies let us down’ THE police officer who shot dead terror suspect Numan Haider has told a coronial inquest that the Australian Secret Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) withheld vital intelligence beforehand. The Victoria Police detective, who cannot be identified, had agreed to meet Haider outside Endeavour Hills police station after the teen terror suspect called him back earlier that evening of 23 September 2014. In one of four calls that evening played to the Coroner’s Court on Friday 18 March, background whispering can be heard from Haider’s end. As the teen terror suspect waited for a police detective to pick up his call, he can be heard talking about something hidden inside a pocket. On the recording, Haider talked at length. He referred to something just looking like “s*** in a pocket”. “I don’t trust them,” he said. The phone recording was played to a coronial inquest into Haider’s death at the County Court. When Officer A picked up the call, Haider can be heard asking him if he had searched Haider’s house in Endeavour Hills that night. “That’s right,” Officer A said. Unbeknown to the officer, Haider had been upset that police - or “dogs” as he described them - searched his bedroom in his absence that evening. “I don’t think I can come down to the police station. I feel comfortable here,” Haider told the officer on the phone. Haider said he wanted to meet at Hungry Jack’s in Hallam. Background whispering can be heard from Haider’s end, something that Officer A later agreed with the court that he found concerning. Officer A told Haider that there would be too many people in Hungry Jack’s for them to be able to talk freely but that in reality “I was thinking this was some sort of ambush or a trap”. He said he needed to make an assessment for Australia’s national security but that Haider wouldn’t be arrested or detained. The detective told Coroner John Olle that he was also not privy to Haider’s utterances prior to the officer picking up the phone. Officer A told the court that he had asked Haider to come down to Endeavour Hills police station “just for a

“I WAS VERY HAPPY THAT NUMAN WAS COMING DOWN TO THE STATION TO MEET ME AND TALK TO INVESTIGATORS… Officer A told the court.
An inquest has heard that ASIO failed to pass on information in Numan Haider's Facebook profile, centre, to police prior to their fateful meeting outside Endeavour Hills police station. chat” and that had he declined to meet then no further contact would have been made. But Haider called back a second time to say that he would come down to the police station. “Beautiful,” Officer A responded on the tape. There was at least five seconds of silence on the tape when Haider apologises for putting the officer on mute. “Can we talk outside or something?” Haider asked. “Yeah, no dramas. I’ll wait for you,” the officer said and asked what car Haider would be driving. They agree to meet in 15 minutes. Counsel assisting, Rachel Ellyard, asked the officer in court why he agreed to the meeting “very speedily”. “I was very happy that Numan was coming down to the station to meet me and talk to investigators,” Officer A told the court. Police planned to wait outside for Haider. After searching Haider for weapons, Officer A planned to then persuade the 18-year-old to come inside the station.
However Haider called 10 minutes earlier than anticipated. “Hi, I’m outside right now,” Haider said. “OK no worries, I’ll come out. Thanks mate,” Officer A replied. Officer A told the court that he wasn’t concerned about this at the time. There was surveillance outside to show if Haider arrived alone or not. The officer and a federal agent approach Haider who is sitting on a car bonnet in shadows in the next-door childcare centre’s car park. Officer A told the court that Haider did not show any pre-attack warning signs although he was concerned that Haider’s right hand was in his jacket pocket and his left hand was by his side. Prior to the meeting, Officer A was aware that Haider had recently been sourcing knives, an iPhone taser and a balaclava. A federal agent told him there was “potential for an edged weapon”. A worldwide Islamic State fatwa had been issued days earlier but its impact at that stage was unknown, Of-

ficer A told the court. He considered Haider may have been angry with police, given he had staged a flag-waving, raving protest in Dandenong Plaza five days earlier. That came hours after large-scale counter-terrorism police raids in Sydney and Brisbane. However ASIO did not pass “significant” information they knew of Haider, Officer A told the court, such as Haider’s Facebook profile photo of him in camouflage, wearing a balaclava and holding a Shahada flag just five days ahead of the attack. They had also not passed on Haider’s Facebook comments calling police “dogs” who had “declared war” on Islam nor a telephone intercept in which Haider told a friend that if he had a knife he could have stabbed police who stopped him in Dandenong Plaza. “I was operating under the proviso that ASIO would provide real-time intelligence,” Officer A said. “I think it unlikely we’d meet him in those circumstances had ... full intelligence been revealed.”
Officer A said he could see Haider clearly enough in the childcare centre’s ambient outside light and that there was no indication that there would be trouble. He said he looked for pre-attack warning signs such as where Haider’s hands were, his gaze, any hostile body language, drunkeness or drug use, but could see none. However, the detective told the court that he shook hands from a distance to mitigate any risk that Haider may have a knife in his pocket. He told Haider that he was going to search him and he thought Haider was complying when he turned around towards the car’s bonnet. However, Haider then quickly turned around to attack and the officer said he didn’t see a knife until it was entering his forearm. He blocked Haider’s second stabbing motion and backed away. Haider then turned his attack on the federal agent - Officer B - who had been looking in the car’s window. The agent collapsed as Haider stabbed him multiple times including to the head. Officer A said he was too far away to use a baton or OC spray to save his colleague. In any case, he said spray wouldn’t have affected Haider fast enough to avert Officer B’s murder. Haider stood “to the side and above” Officer B, who was lying on his back. Officer A said that for the first time in his career he used “lethal force” - one shot to Haider’s head - which killed him instantly. “There was not any opportunity at all to disarm (Haider),” Officer A said. “Officer B was probably seconds away from being killed.” Within a minute of walking out of the station to greet Haider, Officer B ran back to the station holding a profusely bleeding wound near his eye. “The warning signs weren’t missed by the joint counter-terrorism team (which included himself and several federal agents),” Officer A told the court. “There had been obviously significant intelligence we weren’t made aware of.” The hearing has been adjourned to 27 April.

Tea house pours over refreshing tradition By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS MANY of the world’s problems could be dissolved in a cup of tea. At least it could take your mind off life’s stresses as well as lower cholesterol, blood pressure, improve indigestion and reduce diabetes says Milan Tea House owner Wendy Wong. Some of Melbourne’s fabled coffee drinkers have been converted to Ms Wong’s imported Chinese white, green and black teas in her serene shop which is tucked away in an alley near Springvale Central. “When I came to Melbourne, I realised they don’t have a real tea shop,” Ms Wong said. “I dreamed many years to open a shop that does it properly.” The store gets its name from a perfumed yellow flower. The wallpapers, the wood-carved cabinets, traditional music, tea sets and jade ornaments evoke suitably Eastern ambience. In quiet ritual, Ms Wong pours pu-

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL erh tea from China’s cool, mountainous Yunnan province. This region has a 1700-year history in tea. Its ripe variety - as opposed to its raw form - is fermented. Its dark, woody leaves produce a deep red, earthy-tasting aromatic tea. It’s infused several times in a handmade, purple clay teapot. The clay’s high-porosity allows for the tea to “breathe”. Flavour builds in the pots over many years. Ms Wong grew up in the “gourmet tea centre” of Guangzhou, China. It’s become her staple three times a day. She preaches the tea’s social and therapeutic value served in tiny cups. How it’s a healthier mood-changer than the West’s popular clutch, alcohol.
“Just with one cup, the tea helps calm you down. When you finish the pot, you will clear your mind. “Then you can solve your problems.”
For the uninitiated, the tea house is offering $3 tea tastings this Saturday, 2 April, and Sunday 3 April. Milan Tea House is open six days a

She said: “Leaked documents show legal aid for traffic prosecutions will only be available to people facing jail terms.” The State Opposition has released a discussion paper in response to the new guidelines outlining the results of the changes including 3900 or 15 per cent fewer grants, delays in the court system due to ‘duty solicitors’ being overloaded, and lower quality of representation due to inadequate preparation time for duty solicitors. 5 years ago 28 March 2011 Luxury car burnt A DANDENONG man, 45, was pulled
from his luxury car before it was stolen, burnt out and dumped. He was approached by two men in the car park at the corner of Foster and Thomas streets on 17 March about 9.30pm. The men, described as Southern European, started a conversation with the man as he sat in his car. They then pulled him out, jumped in and drove off. LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 6 April 1916 Recruiting RECRUITING in the Shire of Dandenong is still proceeding as briskly as ever, despite the lull in some parts of the state. Dandenong’s total is now over 100 new army men, which is 31 over the quota. The recruiting officer (Sergeant Pickett) has been to other parts of the state last week, engaged on platform work in connection with the appeal for more men, and he reports that from what he has seen in other shires Dandenong has an exceptionally good record in the
matter of enlistments. 50 years ago 29 March 1966 Teachers ease threat of another strike DANDENONG - There is no immediate threat of a repetition of the secondary school teachers’ stopwork which threw many secondary schools into chaos last Friday. At Dandenong High School the principal, Mr K Mitchell, said: “At 9am on Friday we had assembly and at 9.30am senior students were dismissed for the day. Kiss crossed over the line By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DOVETON man has pleaded guilty to sexual assault after knocking on an 82-year-old woman’s door and pashing her on her doorstep. At Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, Ian Ruben Wickson, 67, denied the woman’s claims that he inserted his tongue during the unsolicited kiss in the early evening of 13 November. Wickson had told police he believed the woman – a nearby neighbour - wanted to be kissed, and had intended to invite her to his house and have sex with her. He’d also believed she was a similar age, the court heard on 22 March. Police prosecutors told the court that the victim, who lives with her sister, answered the front door just after tea. The resident motioned to Wickson that she didn’t have her hearing aids in as he briefly spoke to her.

She believed Wickson was asking about the hard rubbish on her nature strip, police told the court. As she bent down to restrain her barking dogs, Wickson then placed his hands on her face and kissed her on the lips. Wickson’s lawyer initially argued it was an unlawful assault, rather than a sexual offence. “His intention was to go away and have sex back at his house but it was not his intention to have sexual gratification from the kissing.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said by “common sense” and “the entire circumstances” it was a sexual assault. “(Wickson) admitted sexual gratification was behind it. “He doesn’t even really verbally communicate with her then touches her very spontaneously in that way.” Mr Vandersteen said the
victim was likely to be “quite staunch” about the events if required to testify. He noted that Wickson appeared to have no insight into his offence but had no prior convictions. “I don’t know if there is some pre-planning. Obviously there’s some thought process behind it. There’s not much logic.” Department of Corrections assessed Wickson as suitable for a community-based order. Wickson was bailed for sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 5 May, pending a private assessment of his reoffending risk. Mr Vandersteen said he wanted to ensure the accused posed no further risk to the community. As a bail condition, Wickson was ordered not to approach or contact the victim or her home. “I won’t go back there again,” Wickson told the magistrate.

Road of pain CASEY has recorded the second-most road deaths in Victoria in the last decade. There were 17 road fatalities reported in Casey from 2006 to 2015, with a motorcyclist death in Cranbourne last week adding to the fast climbing 2016 road toll. Casey was ranked second alongside Hume and Brimbank, while Baw Bar and East Gippsland topped the list on 19 fatalities, from 2006 to 2015. There have been 23 motorcyclists killed in Victoria this year, nine of whom allegedly did not have a valid licence, bringing the state’s road toll to 76 - 16 fatalities higher than this time last year. Last Tuesday 15 March, a Narre Warren man died in a motorcycle crash in Cranbourne West. Police say the 58-year-old man was riding west on Central Parkway, about 4.20pm, when he crashed. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The TAC last week issued a safety plea ahead of the Easter
long weekend, in the wake of the state’s rising road toll. “Weekends like Easter see a lot of people getting out and seeing different parts of the state, and many are travelling longer distances than they are accustomed to and on roads that they are not familiar with," TAC senior road safety manager Samantha Cockfield said. “When you add drowsiness into the mix, it can be a tragic recipe.“ This month’s fatality in Cranbourne West is one of a string of tragic road deaths in Casey over the last 10 years. Last month, Star News spoke with Bob Halsall, a former Casey Councillor, who witnessed a horror car crash in Lynbrook in 2008. He was sitting in his own car at the stop lights at the Lynbrook Boulevard and South Gippsland Highway intersection when a truck ran a red light and hit a car in March 2008, claiming the lives of two boys, 6 and 9. Eight years later, safety concerns are still being raised about the site, with Casey Council
urging the community to participate in a recently closed VicRoads survey regarding the notorious intersection. Last year, more than 6000 people signed an online petition for a roundabout to be built at a notorious Pearcedale intersection where two people died in five years. The most recent fatality there was last May, when 19-year-old Olivia Steadman-Meconi lost her life in a multi-car crash. Cranbourne’s Emma Lowen knows what it’s like to live the nightmare of losing a teenage daughter to the road toll. On 28 June 2009, Emma’s 16-year-old daughter, Riyani, was killed in a two-car collision at the intersection of Hallam and Ormond roads, which also claimed the lives of fellow Narre Warren South P-12 College student Anja Miller, 15, and friend Joel Brimble, 19. A fortnight later as she drove past a roadside memorial erected for the lost teenagers, a 21-year-old woman was killed instantly when her car was hit by a B-double truck at the same intersection.

Cigarette thieves on the run POLICE are hunting two thieves who stole a number of packs cigarettes and lighters from the Hampton Park Shopping Centre. Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark said the two people broke into one of the shop-
ping centre’s stores about 3.35am on Friday 19 March and stole a “significant quantity” of cigarettes and cigarette lighters. One of the thieves was wearing a motorbike helmet and dark clothes at the time.
The other was wearing dark clothes, a beanie with a tassel, and a hoodie with a fluro vertical stripe on the back. Det Sen Sgt Clark said one of the offenders was believed to have an “unusual gait”.

Historic Heights under hammer By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE historic Doveton Heights Cottage is set to go under the hammer next month. The cottage, which sits in Doveton Avenue in Eumemmerring, was built in 1894 by Captain John Doveton and his wife Margaret Elisabeth Doveton, after which the suburb was named. The Victorian home will be auctioned on Saturday 9 April by Donaldson Real Estate, after which the property’s rich history will be passed on to a new owner. The solid brick house sits on a 969m sq allotment and includes three bedrooms, a kitchen, a lounge room, a bathroom and a laundry. Realtor Les Donaldson said he expected Doveton Heights to capture a lot of interest. “We’ve had probably 20-odd inspections in 10 days, naturally the locals are very interested to see it, because it’s such a historic home,” Mr Donaldson said. “And the City of Casey hasn’t got an abundance of historic homes.” The suburb of Doveton was named after Captain John in 1954, 60 years after the captain and his wife, Margaret, built Doveton Heights. Doveton, the suburb, was established by the Housing Commission to provide homes for the employees of the ‘Big Three’ industrial companies which had set up factories in the area - International Harvester, Heinz and General Motors Holden. Originally, the region was known as Grassmere or Eumemmerring, according to information gathered by the Casey-Cardinia Library Corporation. The first mention linking Captain Doveton and Margaret to the suburb appears to be a listing in the 1893-’94 Shire of Berwick rate books.
The records show that Captain Doveton owned a house and 2.5 acres at Lot 53 in Grassmere, then the following year he is reported as having another 2.5 acres at Lot 56. The Casey Cardinia Library Corporation has also unearthed records from The Argus on 11 October 1873, highlighting Captain Doveton’s time serving as a Second Officer on the steamship known as the Durham, which had just arrived from London after 50 days at sea. The Argus also has various reports, in the Shipping Intelligence column, of Captain Doveton arriving and departing Melbourne as the Captain of the Julia Percy, then the Tamar, and then the Southern Cross. In the information gathered by the Casey Cardinia Library Corporation, it is concluded that Captain John Doveton and Margaret Elisabeth Doveton were in fact first cousins, as their fathers were brothers, and notes that Margaret should have as much status as the ‘namesake’ of the suburb of Doveton as her husband. For more information, visit the Casey Cardinia Library Corporation website at www.cclc.vic.gov.au.

OVER a near three-decade long policing career, Paul Breen has had a number of highlights. But as he wraps up his role as Casey's police Inspector after two years, the seasoned officer said it had been the most “enjoyable role I’ve had”. “I’m lucky enough to lead, in my view, the most energetic and professional work force that I’ve been involved with in in my time as a police officer,” he said. “There is strong morale in a super busy environment. “And I’m also lucky enough to be supported by six very competent senior sergeants. “I couldn’t praise my senior sergeants and the sergeants enough. “They’ve been quite outstanding.” Insp Breen is moving into a new role with Victoria Police as the Investigation and Response Inspector for Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. And he’s very happy he’ll still be able to keep an “eye on crime” in Casey. If Insp Breen leaves behind any legacy after finishing up next month, the 29-year police veteran said he’d like to think it’s the strong partnerships and links he has built up with Casey’s wide-ranging community groups. “By doing that we’ve made them aware of the issues at hand and they’re made aware of the issues that we’re dealing with,” Insp Breen said. “There’s been some terrific partnership building. “What I found here in Casey, what I learnt very early on, was to
Paul Breen will finish up as Casey's police Inspector next month. 151727 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS get a strong gauge, go down to some of the soup kitchens, and I went down to Transit in Webb Street and met some amazing community people. “Those types of community groups really inspire me.” This isn’t the only legacy he’s leaving behind in Casey.
Insp Breen has been pivotal in setting up several police-led initiatives such as the ‘Chatting with Casey Cops’ local radio program, while he was also heavily involved alongside Casey council in pushing for extra safety precautions at Lysterfield Lake where there have been three drowning deaths since
July 2000, according to Life Saving Victoria. His continual support of the City of Casey saw Insp Breen receive many plaudits from a number of councillors during last week’s public meeting. Insp Breen came over to Casey after serving as Local Area Commander for the Port Phillip region, a role that saw him based in St Kilda. He said Port Phillip had its own challenges, its own “edginess” as a result of street prostitution and alcohol-fuelled crime, which put him in good stead when he walked in as the Local Area Commander for Casey, which has its own unique challenges. It’s well-publicised that the City of Casey consistently has the highest family violence statistics in the state, while Insp Breen said the reality of having only one major arterial road - the Monash Freeway - results in road safety and road trauma being significant issues. “In Casey the biggest challenge is how do we deal with such a vastly growing population in an enormous area?” Insp Breen said. “And we’ve got to be so efficient and smart with our tasking. “The challenge has been to really make strong inroads on reducing family violence and having a very strong effect on recidivist offenders.” While Insp Breen is sad to be leaving his position at Casey, he’s excited to be once again stepping outside his comfort zone. After all, he did exactly that two years ago and it brought him to Casey. “It’s been a place where I’ve really enjoyed coming to work every day,” Insp Breen said.

The existing home is deceptive as it is double storey at the rear and has three living areas, two bathrooms and three toilets plus a garage and carport. There is also a large covered timber decked entertaining area to the rear and plenty of rear yard. All set behind a secure bluestone front fence. Macpherson street has quality homes and town houses, large street trees, quiet seclusion and is located an easy stroll to Dandenong Plaza and Market, schools, shops, churches, medical, train station and more.

Located on the corner of Glasscocks and Berwick-Clyde roads, Narre Warren South, ‘Berwick Lakes’ has something for everyone. The estate offers two-bedroom and three-bedroom units either with single or double garages with facades that range from modern to period style homes – these units are a standout. ‘Berwick Lakes’ is close to shopping centres, medical centre, cafes and restaurants, sporting facilities and a short stroll away from parks and lakes. Families have the option of primary and secondary schools in the vacinity. Public transport and access to the Monash Freeway is nearby. Every unit is complete with full turn-key pack inclusions such as dishwasher,
split-system air-conditioner, gas ducted heating, remote-controlled garage door and stainless-steel appliances throughout. All units will be completed with inclusions, so moving in is no fuss. Due to overwhelming interest in the development, only a handful of units remain in the 51-unit development, there is limited opportunity for you to get your hands on prime real estate in this sought after area. With prices starting from $380,000, buyers would have trouble finding more affordable living in this location with such features and inclusions. For further inquiries and a full list of inclusions and plans contact Gary Doleschal at Premier Builders Group on 0418 990 379.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… IT’S not every day that an evening meal is disrupted by a copperhead snake, but that was the case for members of one Cranbourne South family recently when they were forced to swap their salad tongs for snake tongs! Snake Catcher Victoria’s Barry Goldsmith said the juvenile copperhead snake would have been brought in by the cat. “If you let cats roam they will bring snakes inside,” Mr Goldsmith said. The Cranbourne mother spoke to 3AW Breakfast show hosts Ross and John on air about the evening visit, saying her toddler daughter notified them of the snake. “My three-year-old daughter found it. She came running in saying ‘snake, snake, snake’. “Our first reaction was she’s a bit if a storyteller and shouldn’t make up things like that up... but sure enough it was a juvenile snake,” she told 3AW listeners. But Mr Goldsmith said copperhead snakes are “our friends”. “They are misunderstood,” he said. “Copperhead snakes are not so dangerous, they have never killed anybody in Australia and they eat tiger snakes.” Mr Goldsmith said he caught four adult copperhead snakes throughout the southeast region on Wednesday 16 March and one on a Botanic Ridge property.

A PHOTOGRAPHER and reporter from Star News had a taste of history last week. The pair was invited for a tour of Doveton Heights Cottage, a special historic home once owned by Captain John Doveton, after whom the suburb is named. A well-known local realtor, who is helping the owner sell the house, was more than happy to have the Star News contingent come and check out the landmark house. The property will go under the hammer next month.
GREAT things come in threes at Doveton. Last week Myuna Farm’s much-loved boar goat, Ivory, gave birth to rare kid triplets. The two black female goats and one white male goat were born about 3.45pm on Wednesday 16 March, after a complicated labour which lasted 48 hours. River Gum Ward Councillor Wayne Smith dropped by Myuna Farm to meet the latest additions, who can be viewed every day between 10am and 4pm at the farm. Visitors will be able to cuddle and pet the kid goats in about two weeks. For more information, visit www.facebook. com/MyunaFarm.
CASEY Central Shopping Centre had just about everything, except the kitchen sink, to help staff officially open the centre on Thursday 17 March. There were trumpets, indigenous dance and didgeridoo too!
Thousands flocked to the Narre Warren retail hub as cars lined surrounding streets. Eager shoppers embraced the discounts and freebies on offer and kids show, Paw Patrol, brought out the prams!

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
New link into China trade By CASEY NEILL A NEW partnership will help Greater Dandenong businesses tap into China’s eCommerce market. The State Government announced a deal with Australia Post and Chinese online marketplace Tmall at an eCommerce in China seminar on Wednesday 9 March. Small Business, Innovation and Trade Minister Philip Dalidakis said it would allow businesses to sell direct to
consumers in the world’s largest economy without leaving their homes. Last financial year Tmall sales were up 68 per cent on the previous year, exceeding $170 billion dollars. The Chinese eCommerce market is the world’s largest, with an estimated 649 million internet users spending more than $250 billion dollars each year. Greater Dandenong Council’s business group manager Paul Kearsley was at the seminar.
“Through the systems that the Victorian Government has just set up, with a partnership approach, that allows businesses in our region to access that market without having to go through all the hurdles of registering their business in China, setting up an office in China,” he said. “They can literally, as far as I understand it, just put it on Tmall Global. “There’s a massive opportunity here for small and medium enterprises to offer their services and their prod-
ucts directly to China. “We’ve just got to be part of it.” Mr Kearsley visited Nanjing twice last year. “We were taken to a couple of other companies that were specialising in eCommerce,” he said. “It was very evident to me, and also to the businesses that I took, that eCommerce was a huge opportunity to businesses in the Greater Dandenong area.”
He will ask the State Government to provide information and, potentially, workshops to help Greater Dandenong businesses to understand their opportunities. “They also might be interested in listening to speakers with examples and case studies of how they’ve gone about it,” he said. “Business to business is always the best way that we can get the information out.”
Drive to make new zone ‘clever, clean and critical’ By CASEY NEILL DANDENONG and the south-east could become Australia’s manufacturing hub if a new $1.2 billion vision becomes reality. Committee for Dandenong (C4D) hosted a regional manufacturing showcase in Queens Hall at Parliament House on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 March. Premier Daniel Andrews joined C4D chairman Gary Castricum to launch the group’s three-year strategic agenda at a cocktail event on Tuesday. It champions strengthening smart manufacturing and innovation, improving transport and infrastructure, continued revitalisation in Dandenong’s CBD, and fostering community wellbeing. “Adding 10,000 new manufacturing jobs to Melbourne’s south-east means that this region will become Australia’s largest manufacturing zone,” Mr Castricum said. Supporting the event and the document were South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA), the Greater Dandenong, Kingston, Knox, Cardinia and Casey councils, the CSIRO, Chisholm Institute, and businesses including Bombardier, Jayco and SRX Global. “This alliance is a first for the south-east of Melbourne,” Mr Castricum said. “Councils, educators and researchers are working together to make Melbourne’s south-east the centre of manufacturing in Australia. “They are joining local manufacturers and businesses to attract $1.2 billion of public and private investment to the region. “Their aim is to create jobs, stimulate local economies and innovation,
and strengthen community health, wellbeing and resilience.” Mr Castricum said the south-east produced more than half of Victoria’s manufactured product and included 5000 manufacturing businesses providing 90,000 jobs. “This incredibly valuable Manufacturing Zone has the potential to become an internationally-renowned centre of manufacturing excellence,” he said. “It is a strong, powerful and collective vision.” Mr Andrews said attendance from all sides of parliament at the cocktail event “should be taken as a great vote of confidence in Dandenong and the south-east”. “To all of those who are here tonight, know and understand that we will keep working with you, we’ll keep partnering with you,” he said. “There is a strong future for manufacturing. “If the south-east is firing and the south-east is going well then I think our state is in pretty good shape as well.
“I thank you for the risks that you take, the investments that you champion, the innovation, the challenges that you overcome every quarter, every year.” Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said manufacturing was not dead, but it was changing. “We will see some types of manufacturing exit, unfortunately,” she said. “But we don’t want the capability to also exit.” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said manufacturing was a job creator “with up to five jobs being created in the rest of the economy for every job in manufacturing”. She said the sector was no longer “dirty, dumb and dangerous” but “clever, clean and critical”. The Smart Manufacturing 2016 Dandenong and South East Melbourne on Show event will take over Lonsdale Street, Dandenong, on Tuesday 17 May. It will demonstrate job, investment and growth opportunities, research and education in manufacturing, and innovation and capability in manufacturing.

Leaders in the making By JARROD POTTER LEADING Dandenong into the new TAC Cup season will be a pair of peninsula prospects. Stingrays co-captains Luke Dalmau (Somerville/Haileybury) and Liam Mckay (EdithvaleAspendale) have been picked by their peers to guide the side through the season and were announced at the club’s jumper presentation on Tuesday night. The Stingrays chose to go with a two-captain approach once again after Lachie Williams stood as the sole captain in 2015. Rounding out the leadership group are vicecaptains Thomas Jok (Beaconsfield), Josh Battle (Doveton) and Myles Poholke (Sorrento), while the deputy vice-captains are Mason de Wit (Mt Eliza) and Max Kleverkamp (Sorrento). Dalmau didn’t get to feature in much action last season - playing two games early on for the Stingrays - but he was a constant presence in the group and felt the impact of its leaders like Williams and draftees Jacob Weitering and Kieran Collins. “It’s obviously an honour to be voted in by my peers and something I won’t take for granted during the year and hopefully I can work well with Liam Mckay as well,” Dalmau said. “We had some really good leaders last year in Lachie, Weiters and Collo - I learnt a lot from them and especially with Weiters the off-field stuff. “That professionalism that all the recruiters said about him and they were absolutely right. “Lachie was just inspirational on and off it too and was best mates with Collo so it was awesome.” Dalmau is ready to get his teeth sunk into TAC Cup footy, which kicks off Saturday afternoon in Traralgon as the Stingrays battle regional rivals Gippsland.

Back: Myles Poholke, Craig Black (coach), Mason de Wit. Absent: Liam Mckay. 151979 Pictures: JARROD POTTER He wants to up the intensity around the group and make sure the Stingrays start strong and stay the course throughout 2016. “Want to bring in a bit of hard-nosed grunt,” Dalmau said. “I don’t want to really be on the back foot from the start - I want us to be a really aggressive side and hopefully this weekend we can take it up to Gippy.”
Stingrays coach Craig Black thought Dalmau and Mckay would grow into the roles and make them their own. “I think it’s really good having young kids that can develop into leaders - at under-age footy it’s hard to find someone who is just going to come out and be the next Jonathan Brown, but this is the stepping stone for it,” Black said.
“We challenge them and think they’re players who can set the right example on and off the field and if the players vote them in, then these guys are settling a great example and it’s a good start.” Dandenong faced Gippsland at Traralgon Recreation Reserve on Saturday. For more on the match, visit the Dandenong Journal website www.dandenong.starcommunity.com.au.
Winners make their presence felt By JARROD POTTER CAPPING off an exceptional return to Dandenong Basketball Stadium this summer, Rangers guard Steph Cumming picked up two major awards this week. Cumming, 25, from Endeavour Hills, didn’t miss a beat in her return to the green-and-gold as she was the constant presence that held the side together as injuries plagued the Rangers’ 2015/16 campaign. Playing in every clash, Cumming was instrumental in the club returning to the finals for the sixth consecutive WNBL season as she averaged 15.8 points, four rebounds and 2.6 assists per game, including eight games over 20 points in her 2015/16 campaign. “She was just super consistent all year - I think her game really improved and she did it up both ends,” Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson said. “She took on that extra responsibility - we needed her scoring and she then took on a key defensive assignment each game and I thought she improved a lot.” It adds to the WNBL Defensive Player of the Year award she was awarded earlier in the week by the league and she also finished sixth in the league MVP voting. Another Rangers’ 2015/16 recruit Sara Blicavs was given the Coaches Award by Larissa Anderson for a stellar year in her return to Stud Road. Speaking of returns, Jacinta Kennedy capped off an amazing revival after 10 years away from the WNBL courts and was duly rewarded with the Janine Fielder Award as the “player’s player”.
Endeavour Hills Cricket Club vice president Tom Hollis, junior cricketer Lachlan Hollis and Gabrielle Williams MP celebrate $100,000 in funding for Sydney Pargeter Reserve.
Works to help club make the grade Dandenong Rangers celebrated its award winners on Tuesday night. Left to right: Steph Cumming (MVP), Sara Blicavs (Coaches Award), Jacinta Kennedy (Janine Fielding Award) and Amelia Todhunter Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS (Defensive Player of the Year). 151941 “The girls got it spot on - got a lot of wonderful girls in the team but it’s well documented that we’re lucky to have someone of Sinno’s (Kennedy) calibre,” Anderson said. “She stepped in as our starting five man and cemented that role - she’s not a five man in the national league and did a great job for us. “She’s an utmost professional and first to pick anyone up and I think that award was perfect for her.” Stepping up to fill the starting guard role - with Aimie Clydesdale injured early on - Amelia Todhunter was named Dandenong’s Defensive Player
of the Year after taking to any defensive task throughout the season. All told it made for a memorable Rangers’ season and Anderson believes there is a lot left on the horizon that this team can achieve. “Thankful for the support we got on and off the court with our supporters and we’ve also got wonderful past players around the club now." “Really happy to be around and, for me, it couldn’t be more special to have those sorts of people besides me supporting the girls. We’ve got an exciting group and I think the Rangers can be a force to be reckoned with.”
ENDEAVOUR Hills Cricket Club is set to soar into the 2016/17 cricket season with grading works on its four ovals slated for this winter. The state government has boosted Endeavour Hills Cricket Club’s long-term outcome with the announcement of a $100,000 grant from the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund to upgrade cricket facilities at Sydney Pargeter Reserve. The four cricket ovals will be reconstructed by re-levelling the ground, converting to warm season grass as well as improving drainage and installing synthetic pitches. Endeavour Hills Cricket Club vice president Tom Hollis thought the resurfacing was a boon for the Eagles, especially to go hand in hand with the pavilion redevelopment at the ground recently. “We’re absolutely ecstatic something we’ve been hoping to get over the line for a while and rapt to be able to improve our junior grounds and get the synthetic pitches on,” Hollis said.
“It’s all about improving and making sure we’ve got facilities that any standard of cricketer would enjoy - especially our juniors so we can be seen as a team that juniors want to play at in within the south-east.” Hollis believed the works would start by the end of the year and would not infringe on the 2016/17 season. The Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the funds would ensure the Endeavour Hills Cricket Club had the use of new, top quality playing surfaces well into the future for its teams in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association (VSDCA) and Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA). “We have delivered the Endeavour Hills Cricket Club the great sporting facilities they deserve,” Ms. Williams said. “They love their sport in Dandenong and this fabulous project will mean participants of all abilities will be able to strut their stuff at a facility they can be proud of.”

Rays battle bravely By JARROD POTTER
Wind beneath their wings BRINGING home a couple of medals to cap off summer, Dandenong Little Athletics Centre was led by the girls at the Little Athletics State Track and Field Championships. Backing up her success at the regionals, Dandenong’s under-9 field star Kyana Gordon finished third in the girls discus - with a best of 18.54m in the championships which were held last week at Casey Fields. The running events were a lot harder for the athletes at the wind-swept, cold venue on Saturday, but Krish Rajavel proved to be the other Dandenong athlete to star at the meet. Rajavel crossed the line in 1.04.13 to claim bronze in the under-12 girls 400m run. Jake Allen, Nicholas Allsop and Brammashan Kajendra were the other athletes from the centre to qualify and participate in the state championships. Dandenong now gears up for cross country season with the winter-running events starting on 7 May. For more information on joining the centre, which is based at Robert Booth Reserve in Dandenong, email dandenong@lavic.com.au or call 9794 6502.
Georgia Walker and Brooke Struylaart celebrate Dandenong's maiden goal in the Youth Girls Challenge. 150534 Pictures: JARROD POTTER Stingrays captain Georgia Walker - who was meant to be rested for this game, but was called in because of the numerous unavailable players - absolutely starred. Her efforts in the midfield caused headaches for the Dragons throughout the game and set up at least the first goal to Brooke Struylaart. Soon after Sam Ryan marked and goaled to push Dandenong to a three-point margin, a gap that would
be held throughout a deadlocked and scoreless third term. In the best match up of the afternoon, Walker went toe-to-toe with All Australian and Vic Metro star Katherine Smith through the final term as the two showed no sign of easing up against each other. The physicality stepped up another level across the board approaching the final siren as Dandenong barrelled in to the packs and

Girls' team gets set to go By JARROD POTTER DANDENONG Thunder has always been a powerhouse on the soccer pitch but that’s been just in the men’s ranks. That’s all changing this year with the introduction of a women’s side to George Andrews Reserve set to debut in the FFV State League 4 South competition next month. Thunder women’s coach Eva Bekim has seen the dramatic shift in perception towards female participation in only one generation and is excited to see where the women’s game can go. “When I was growing up it was just one team and didn’t have the option of playing un-
der-12 and under-14s,” Bekim said. “I think the Matildas’ success has contributed to the girls wanting to play and increase in females playing soccer in general. “But it’s really good to see the growth now - as it’s opened up the community.” The Thunder was keen to get the side up and running and now that it’s in place, Bekim believes there is no limit on the club’s possible success in the competition. “We’ve had a couple of practice games and there are a lot more women we’re seeing at the games - the club is really excited about branching out into wom-
forced Sandringham to up their intensity as well. But Dandenong’s use of the ball didn’t amount to anything tangible score-wise, as the side mustered a single point even with the wind as Sandringham raced away to kick the two match-winning goals. “We didn’t take our chances and I think their top end players - Katherine Smith, Isabel Huntington were too good and a class above,” Stingrays coach Scott Gowans said. “They really controlled the game and we really couldn’t control them. “We really played the bottom end of our list - we had a lot of girls we wanted to see and weren’t sure of their positions, so we probably have nine players who would fit straight into our best 18. “That’s a positive, but I thought their endeavour and pressure acts were good and when we played to our structure they actually moved the ball OK.” The loss leaves Dandenong battling to stay alive in the finals race - part of the problem of a short-andsharp season. Dandenong now has a must winmatch against Geelong Western on Saturday morning from 10am if the Stingrays stand any chance of making the top-team semi-finals. Gippsland on the opposite hand had a thrilling come-from-behind win over Geelong Western to take the 5.6 (36) to 3.6 (24) victory. DANDENONG STINGRAYS Goals: S. Ryan, B. Struylaart. Best: J. en’s teams and obviously in the future having a WNPL women’s team is the main goal.” On top of the open-age women’s side - set to kick off its inaugural campaign on 10 April against Bayside Argonauts - the Thunder also has an under-12 girls’ team ready to make an impact on the field. While they’re a young side - with a lot of teenagers making up the Thunder’s inaugural senior squad - Bekim thinks the red-and-black brigade can cause a lot of headaches in the first FFV campaign. “Absolutely - they’re really keen and strong on the ball and got a couple of tall under14s who can hold it up so that would be good,” Bekim said.

Krish Rajavel surged to the line in the 400m to earn a state bronze medal for Dandenong Little Athletics Centre.
YOUTH GIRLS CHALLENGE SOUTHERN ROUND 1 ILLNESS, injury and over-possession proved the three prongs of Dandenong’s Youth Girls Challenge 2.3 (15) to 3.5 (23) defeat at the hands of Sandringham. With eight first-choice players on the sidelines for injury or illness, it left the Stingrays no choice but to blood its rookies and hope for the best battling the Dragons. Dandenong had more than enough of the ball despite the up-hill battle though. Plenty of opportunities were generated by the midfield, but Dandenong recklessly booted away and gave Sandringham an endless stream of turnovers. Dandenong then tackled Sandringham into oblivion to make amends for the miskicks, but were scarcely rewarded any free kicks for phenomenal pressure, run-down tackles or the Dragons constantly squandering prior opportunity. As hard as the Stingrays would fight to gain possession, it would be for naught as the Dragons’ direct route to the scoreboard proved much more effective. Neither side could muster much scoreboard pressure in the conditions at Frankston Park as both sides mopped up defensively when kicking against the howling gale. But Sandringham endured, going as far to kick a goal against the buffeting sea-breeze in the second term and holding Dandenong scoreless in the final quarter.
