Doctor is done By JESSE GRAHAM AFTER more than 30 years of work behind his desk and in the houses of people around Healesville, Doctor Peter Carruthers has hung up his stethoscope and retired. Dr Carruthers officially finished up at the Healesville Medical Centre on Thursday, 24 March, more than 30 years after starting on 1 April, 1985. Speaking to the Mail in the lead-up to his retirement, Dr Carruthers said it was his mother that inspired him to get involved in medicine, even though he admits he was “more an arts student”. “My parents were in the generation where ... you had achieved very well if you could have a doctor in the family, or be a doctor,” he said. “Nowadays, it’s not so much of a big deal, but, back then, if your son or daughter did medicine, whoa, they were set for life. “I found the course not really to my liking - my better subjects were literature and English, and I found the medical course very science-based, and so I didn’t really find it terribly enjoyable.” After finishing university, Dr Carruthers did an intern year at the Goulburn Valley Hospital in Shepparton, where shifts were 12 days on, two days off. “You’d be on call from eight o’clock Friday morning to six o’clock Monday evening,” he said. He said doctors could sleep in the residents’ quarters, but being on call for the emergency department meant calls would soon come to get back to work. “I answered the phone one night and dropped it in my sleep,” he said. “The nurse was yelling at me down the phone, ‘Wake up!’, it was ridiculous - it was too long.” From there, he worked a year at Ferntree Gully’s Angliss Hospital, a year at Maroondah Hospital, six months at the Royal Children’s Hospi-
tal, six months at the Eye and Ear Hospital and another year at the Angliss to work on his training. He said his first choice was to head to the Bright and Beechworth area to find work, but his wife at the time was teaching in Croydon, and so Healesville became an option. “So when Healesville came up, we thought, ‘There’s a compromise’,” he said. “You’ve got a hospital, it’s country, but you can go back to Melbourne. And, really, it’s been a perfect compromise. “I’m really happy. It’s been a lovely place - and Healesville’s gotten better over time.” He said the town had two benefits - the first was allowing him to do “interesting” medicine, such as delivering babies, administering anaesthetics and hospital care. “The second has been getting to know patients personally,” he said. “People are lovely, and friendly, and they don’t hassle you - if they’ve got a question to ask, I’ll answer them. We’re not talking about looking for haemorrhoids. As one of his patients over the years, Dr Carruthers was always a friendly face to see in the medical centre, and offered simple explanations for his diagnoses, as well as some time for happy conversation. He said he became friends with the midwives and nursing staff (and, last year, married one of the nurses) at the Healesville Hospital, which he said wouldn’t happen in more suburban areas. “You do not have that in the suburbs - you only get that in the country, and Healesville’s been great - a great hospital with great staff,” Dr Carruthers said. Now that his work at the medical centre is done, Dr Carruthers said he would still work two half-days as an anaesthetist in Lilydale and, later, at the Healesville Hospital.
Doctor Peter Carruthers finished up at the Healesville Medical Centre on 24 March, after 31 years as a GP. 151980 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM He said he also had plans to see family, see new parts of Australia and learn to play golf near a holiday property in Barwon Heads. “There’s a lot of Australia I haven’t
seen,” he said. “I’m ready. I mean, anyone can work forever, and you work, ultimately to make an income to live your life but there’s a time when you’ve got to
look ahead and go, ‘I don’t know how long I’m going to live’. “I’ll be 60 this year ... I want to be able to do the things while I’m still healthy.”

In brief Easter Woori Yallock grass fires a risk POLICE are asking residents to be wary of firebugs, after a number of small grass fires were lit in Woori Yallock over the Easter weekend. Belgrave Police Sergeant, Carolyn Sunderland, told the Mail that at 5.30pm on Saturday, 26 March, witnesses noticed seven small grassfires in scrubland near a creek in Woori Yallock. Sgt Sunderland said the fires were between one and three metres in diameter, and all within the space of about 200 metres. She said the fires had burned “for several hours”, but had not spread due to cool winds. The fires were extinguished, and anyone who may have seen suspicious behaviour is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.

Restoring grounds By JESSE GRAHAM A GROUP of passionate environmentalists is working to restore the grounds of the Maroondah Reservoir to its former glory and calling on residents to volunteer their time (and their hands). The Maroondah Reservoir Friends Group has been set up by former-Green Army member Stephie Barber, and her co-workers, and meets fortnightly to work on the grounds at the Healesville park. Ms Barber told the Mail the group started after the members landscaped areas around the reservoir park as part
of their five-month Green Army work. “We decided that, because of the hard work that we’ve done over the last five months, it would be a massive shame to see the park fall apart again,” she said. She said that, although more Green Army groups would be working on the area, the friends group would work with Parks Victoria and volunteers to clear weeds and start projects during fortnightly working bees. “We’re really familiarised with the park and continue working on it, so when the green armies do eventually
run out, we’ll have a solid friends group that can continue working and maintaining the park,” Ms Barber said. “If we are able to get a bit more funding, we’d like to, in conjunction with the Green Army, see if we can get the rose steps planted again properly, work on azalea planting - just trying to get the parks to a nice state, how the original gardener had them.” Their first working bee on Saturday 12 March saw about 10 people working to remove weeds at the dam, and another has been set for Sunday 3 April at 10am.
Ms Barber said they had already been approached by a person who was part of the former friends group for the reservoir, expressing interest in joining up. “In the group, there’re about 14 members, but it’s sort of like a casual thing -not everyone’s going to be able to make it every time,” she said. For more information about the working bee, search Working Bee - Maroondah Reservoir Park on Facebook, or call Stephie Barber on 0400 244 714 or Shane, Parks Victoria ranger, on 0488 326 170.
Rotary digging deep for needy kids By JESSE GRAHAM THE ROTARY Club of Healesville is asking residents to dig deep for children in Kenya, hosting a fund-raising dinner on Friday 1 April. The dinner, held at the Healesville Senior Citizens Hall on the corner of Green and River streets, will start at 7pm on the Friday evening.
Rotarian Wilma Best said the event would raise money for the children at the Kariakomo Parish in Meru, Kenya, as part of the Milking Cows and Goats Project. Ms Best said the funds would purchase African Galla goats and banana plants for a plantation at the parish, all of which would help to make Kariakomo sustainable.
At the dinner, Australian Culinary Federation, Victoria Chapter, president Dale Prentice will prepare and serve a three-course dinner, made with Yarra Valley produce. A designer jewellery stall will also be held, along with raffles, auctions and a door prize to raise money for the project. Ms Best said that, of the 112 seats at
the venue, 70 tickets had already been sold. She said that the goats cost $60 each, and that $600 can purchase an acre of banana plants. Tickets to the dinner are $45 per person. For more information, and to book, visit www.cowsandgoatsproject.org.au, call 5962 4326 or email wilma.best@ bigpond.com.
A WANTIRNA man will face court for three burglaries in Lilydale, after being busted by Yarra Ranges police last Wednesday. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Melanie Woods, said that on Wednesday, 23 March, police arrested a 25-year-old Wantirna man. The man was arrested after three burglaries that occurred on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 March. Det Sgt Woods said the man is believed to have tried to steal a car from the owner of one of the properties, who confronted the man. Police then located the man, arresting and charging him for the three burglaries. He will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
Hi-fi low-life POLICE are calling for witnesses after a break-in and attempted theft from JB Hi-Fi in Chirnside Park on Wednesday morning. Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Melanie Woods, said that at 1.50am on Wednesday, 23 March, four men forced their way into the Maroondah Highway store and attempted to steal electronic goods. Det Sgt Woods said the men tried to steal electronics, phones and tablet computers, but were unsuccessful. “However, we have concerns that they may reoffend,” she said. Anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity around the shop, or near other retail and commercial areas, are asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report to www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

YARRA Valley kids have shown they have what it takes when it comes to helping others as part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. Jack Christie, 10, from Healesville, Cody Robinson, 12, from Woori Yallock and Callum Richardson, 10, from Hoddles Creek have raised around $8000 with the help of their family, friends and communities. Jarryd Duits, 23, of Healesville also put his locks on the line raising $2330.75. Jack went under the razor on Wednesday, 23 March, outside Healesville’s Eview Group Real Estate. Friends, family and business owners attended the shave, which was live-streamed online, with Vanessa from Haircutters Gallery chopping off his blond locks to a round of applause. Jack said that he had raised more than $1000 by the time of the shave, and many attendees handed the freshly-shaved boy $20 and $50 notes to add to the total. Jarryd’s event at Grind N’ Groove on 12 March saw him cutting his hair for the first time in 10 years, and losing his bushy beard. Cody was also surrounded by family and friends at the Sam Knott

Hotel in Wesburn on Saturday, 12 March, where his parents took charge of the scissors and razor. In a super-charged campaign, Cody raised most of the money from donations, pushing total from $2030 to over $5000 on shave day with a $500 donation from Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink and $1000 from a family friend. A sausage sizzle, raffles and hair colouring added to the tally. Cody, who had grown his hair for three-and-a-half years, dedicated the shave to his Nan who passed away from cancer, and a family member who is battling the disease. Callum had enormous support
from the Yellingbo Primary School where the shave took place on Friday 11 March. The Grade 4 student chased sponsorship and donations and the Junior School Council held a Funky Hair Day to add to the bottom line. Callum kept the money pouring in even after the shave, taking donations from anyone keen to run their hands over his new spikey hair. Jack, Cody, Jarryd and Callum are among more than 150,000 who have signed on in March to support people with blood cancer and fund research. The Victorian tally as of today
(Monday) is $2,582,634 or 72 per cent of the goal of $3605.00. Donations can be made to Jack, Cody, Jarryd or Callum’s campaign until the end of March on the Greatest Shave website bit.ly/22FLDUl (case sensitive).

Council’s tower call “Chum Creek and Badger Creek ... already have incredibly limited coverage, given how urban some of those areas are,” she said. “There were almost total outages in those areas today. “It’s proven again that we really need to improve the telecommunication infrastructure in those areas.” The motion, which was unanimously passed by councillors, also approved a financial contribution of $10,000 for each site that was successfully chosen through the program. Cr Jim Child seconded the motion and said that improving mobile coverage in the Upper Yarra region was about “the whole telecommunications package”, citing a co-located mobile site in Yarra Junction and a pole to be erected in Millgrove by September. Both he and Cr McAllister said that improving the mobile coverage would assist in emergencies, such as bushfires. “I think what we’re doing at the moment, over the last three years, is really increasing that capacity, especially for the Upper Yarra - and, of course, in Cr McAllister’s Ryrie ward as well,” he said. “For the Upper Yarra to have that high rating ... that we live in the most dangerous place in Victoria, if not Australia, to have this support and to have the outcomes, as far as we’re getting in the Black Spot Program, it’s money well-invested.”

Committee stumps up for hall said when local publicans John and Ronnie Edwards retired and moved on after looking after the hall for more than 30 years, it left a big gap. “John and Ronnie managed to keep the hall going despite running their own business and having very little time at their disposal, and their efforts were certainly very much appreciated,” Ms Adams said. Ultimately the committee hopes to promote the church and the hall as a combined wedding package, along with increased community use for all types of events and celebrations. By KATH GANNAWAY A NEW committee is working to ensure that the Powelltown Hall is in top condition to continue to provide a meeting place for the local community. The first hall built in the small timber town would have been 100 this year, but it was pulled down and the current hall was built in 1922. The same committee that took on the job of restoring and managing the town’s historic church has now adopted the hall and they are keen to have it looking as good as the church across the paddock. Committee member, Dawn Adams,
and proceeds from events such as the country market coming up on Sunday, 10 April, will help build the restoration fund. The market is more like a festival with food, stalls, including old-style cake stalls, live country rock music, face painting and a jumping castle, in a traditional bush setting. A country dance on Saturday, 14 May with Bill Rowley and his band is another fund-raiser to add to the calendar. To book a stall, or a ticket to the dance, phone Dawn or Michael Adams on 5966 7431.

THE YARRA Ranges Council will lobby the Federal Government for three new mobile phone towers around the valley, following Tuesday’s council meeting. On Tuesday, 22 March, Yarra Ranges councillors unanimously agreed to advocate for mobile phone towers in Reefton, Chum Creek and Badger Creek, under the Mobile Black Spot Program. The program, which saw new towers announced for Steels Creek and East Warburton in June last year, is now open for its second round of funding, with expressions of interest due by 29 April. Cr Fiona McAllister moved the motion to advocate for the towers, and said Yarra Ranges ticked “all of the boxes” for the program, with coverage in the three areas patchy or non-existent. “It’s not just looking for communities of need around emergency management - we certainly tick all the boxes in that regard - but it’s also looking for areas where there’s high-volume seasonal visitation,” she said. “Luckily, in Yarra Ranges, we also meet those criteria as well.” Cr McAllister said it was “quite ironic” that the item came to council that night, as Telstra services had widespread outages during the day, including to the Yarra Ranges Council’s lines.

Wrong number IT'S nice to see the (Yarra Ranges) Council moving with the times. In the bad old days, a few short months ago, when you rang them up with a simple question, someone invariably answered the phone: no delay, no queue, and answered your question. Just took a minute. Thankfully, they’ve got rid of that efficient way of doing things. They now have a brand-new automated system of menus and robots and jingles and ad-
vertisements that keeps you hanging for ages and ends up with another robot saying they’ll call back. So you simply have to loiter near the phone rather than going back out the paddock or wherever you would rather be. I assume this cost a bit. So if ever you wonder where your rates go, a fair bit went down the gurgler here; setting up a system that doesn’t work, raises blood pressure and makes you swear at the phone. Peter Brennan, Gladysdale.

Planned burns near you
Local, experienced fire crews from DELWP Forest Fire Management, together with the CFA and Parks Victoria, are conducting planned burns in your area to reduce bushfire risk for communities and the environment. Planned burns only take place when the weather is right, and they are carefully managed under safe conditions.
We have been working with local communities using the latest science and information to more effectively target bushfire risk. Reducing bushfire risk is a shared responsibility. Planned burns on public land can only do so much. Make sure you’re prepared for bushfire and know what actions to take.

Summit ideas to help communities
Fluoride for strong choppers
By JESSE GRAHAM A SUMMIT that saw Marysville host representatives from 28 rural Victorian councils earlier this month has been hailed a success, with delegates forming ideas to “future-proof” their communities. The Rural Councils Victoria (RCV) Rural Summit was held in Marysville from Wednesday 9 to Friday 11 March, drawing about 130 councillors, CEOs, business and industry representatives to the area. Over three days, the delegates discussed the theme of this year’s summit Future Proofing Our Communities, with speakers including the Gruen Transfer’s Russel Howcroft, CEO of Emergent Solutions, Holly Ransom and Northern Victoria MLC Jaclyn Symes, among others. Murrindindi Shire Council mayor Margaret Rae said the event was “fantastic” and that it was the first of the rural summits held in the shire, at the Vibe Hotel. Cr Rae said that sustainability and building more resilient communities were some of the topics raised during the summit, as well as challenges into the future, such as delivering services to “increasing diverse” communities. Cr Rae said that some rural shires were working together to share their services, to keep costs down to be able to meet the challenges. “The same mix will not work for everybody, but if you can find similar shires with the same sort of needs with whom you can work collaboratively to deliver services, that will help to minimise the cost, and help to increase the productivity around that as well,” she said. She said environmentally sustainable measures, such as more electronic service delivery, as well as replacing street light bulbs with energy-saving bulbs, would also mean less cost to council and ratepayers. “While that doesn’t give you cash

in your hand today, it means all of that expenditure is relieved for the years to come,” Cr Rae said. Another of the initiatives discussed at the summit was communicating with communities, and Cr Rae said there was an expectation that the community wanted to be involved in decision-making. She said that setting parameters and engaging residents from the beginning of an initiative was a “very successful”
way of improving services and their delivery. “Because councils, no matter who they are, can’t do it all,” Cr Rae said. “Most good initiatives come from communities, and councils are increasingly asking, in that context of facilitating what the community wants to achieve. “That’ll be a much more powerful way of doing it.”
THE Australian Dental Association has reminded Yarra Valley residents to take care of their teeth, with almost 30,000 residents not receiving fluoride from their drinking water. The Mail contacted the Australian Dental Association’s Victorian Branch (ADAVB), after learning that water taken from the valley’s two reservoirs is not treated with fluoride. In Yarra Valley Water’s Drinking Water Quality Report 2014/2015 lists water from the Maroondah and Upper Reservoirs not being treated with fluoride before being directed to households. A spokesperson for Yarra Valley Water confirmed that “Yarra Valley towns, Healesville and Yarra Glen areas are not fluoridated,” and said fluoridation is decided by the Department for Health and Human Services (DHHS). Victorian DHHS spokesperson, Bram Alexander said that about 28,000 people in the Yarra Ranges Shire, who are connected to reticulated drinking water, do not receive fluoridated water. Lilydale, Monbulk, Montrose and Seville are serviced by the Silvan Reservoir, which has fluorida-

tion as part of its water treatment. Mr Alexander said that “water infrastructure agreements” determined where fluoride plants were built, and that the department was in discussion with water businesses “to identify suitable opportunities to extend water fluoridation, where and when it is feasible to do so”. The Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB)’s president, Dr Stephen Liew said that access to water fluoridation helps to protect against teeth decay for people of all ages. He said more than 90 per cent of Victorians had access to fluoridated water, but that the entire state would “never be totally fluoridated”, due to costs or impracticalities in bringing fluoridated water to small communities, or farmland. “ADAVB understands that there are towns supplied from the Upper Yarra and Maroondah Reservoirs that do not pass a water fluoridation plant and therefore do not receive fluoride,” Dr Liew said. “It is important to look after your teeth through healthy eating, regular brushing, appropriate use of fluoridated toothpaste, minimising sugar and regular dental check-ups.” For more information about dental health, visit www.ada.org.au.

Eggs go with sausages By KATH GANNAWAY SPECTACULAR autumn weather, two great bands, sizzling sausages, Easter eggs and a bumper crop of visitors ... Warburton couldn’t have asked for any more for their big Easter weekend. The caravan park set the ball rolling with Easter activities for locals and visitors on the Saturday and the Annual Easter Fund-raiser took over on the Sunday with The Yarra River Band and The Mason Boys providing a great afternoon of live music and dancing on the football oval. Organiser John Seegers said they couldn’t have asked for a better day.
“It was just a really excellent day and a lot of people said it was the best show we’ve had,” he said. Mr Seegers said Warburton was ‘chock-a-block’ with visitors over the Easter long weekend and the two events had become very much part of the Warburton Easter experience for many of the regular visitors. Money raised came from raffles with a beautiful hamper donated by the local lolly shop among the prizes, a sausage sizzle run by Warburton Primary School and the ever-popular face-painting. Proceeds of the day will go to the Warburton Sporting Club and the Primary School with some small donations to other local groups.

down into extremely minute particles. The vermicast, rich in carbon, is discharged into the soil where it naturally fertilises the soil and waters and fertilises the garden. “Over time, this transforms the top layer of soil into an incredible rich, dark coloured growing medium,” Mr Murphy said. “With a voracious appetite, the worms can consume and kill harmful bacteria such as e-coli, salmonella and enteric virus in the sewage, making it safe to use.” The system can process all organic waste including weeds and kitchen scraps eliminating it from landfill.
To find out why more than 2000 families in Australia have installed the worm driven sewage system and doing their bit to repair our environment and make it safe for future generations, look out for the good folk from A&A Worm Farm at the Ecotopia Festival. They will be happy to answer all your questions about how the system works, how it will fit with your family’s needs and the costs and benefits. Sew Warburton - an alternative to plastic bags. 152041
Bespoke bags built By KATH GANNAWAY WHERE else but at a festival like Ecotopia could you bag a beautiful, handcrafted shopping bag as a gift. The campaign to help Warburton become free of singleuse plastic bags held an exciting bag-making event ‘Sew Warburton’ on 18 March and there is another planned for Friday, 1 April. The community sewingbees reshape recycled fabric into custom-made shopping bags which tie in very nicely with Ecotopia’s “ theme of
CO
“River to the Sea”. Co-ordinator, Michelle Fisher, said the aim of the take-away bags was to supply bags free of charge to people in the local area so they can get into the habit of taking their own bags when they go shopping and say ‘no thanks’ to shops who offer them single-use plastic bags. Australians use 10.6 million plastic bags each day and 30-50 million bags end up on beaches, streets and parks each year. “These bags find their way into the sea via rivers and drains and are responsible for killing
tens of thousands birds, whales, seals and turtles every year,” Michelle said. There will be an opportunity also at the festival to make your own bag - or one to give away. If you can ‘kind of sew’ or cut in a straight line, you can make a bag. The next ‘Sew Warburton’ is on Friday, 1 April at the Warburton Community Space, Thomas Avenue, between 4pm and 7pm. WORMS may be little critters, but they will be one of the big attractions at this year’s Ecotopia Festival. A&A Worm Farm Waste Systems has the key to the world’s best worm driven sewage and organic waste conversion system, and it will be on display at the festival. David Murphy, author of Organic Growing with Worms, says great things can be achieved through the transforming powers of worms. “As we become conscious of the damage we have done to our planet, it’s clear that we must adopt practices in our daily living which lessen the impact of our lifestyle on the environment,” Mr Murphy said. This can be without any inconvenience and at a very little cost through worms and the worm experts at A&A Worm Farm Waste Systems. The system is simple. The contents of the toilet and household water are piped directly to a colony of active compost worms. The A&A system then constantly introduces fresh air into the worm driven processing tank, keeping the system aerobic and eliminating odour. Mr Murphy explained the worms then turn the solid matter in the sewage, along with the flush water and other water, into vermicast, a solution of suspended solid which is broken

Fashion, music, demos and more PROUDLY heralded by ECOSS Yarra Valley, Ecotopia 2016 is coming to town. And, following her in a cacophony of colour and good humour is a whole carnival of live music, market stalls, workshops, enviro demonstration, drumming, dancing, magic and kids’ fun stuff. The famous Recycled Fashion Parade hosted by the radiantly sophisticated fashionista Hans Allover will, as always, be closely scrutinised by the “Haute Couture“ to determine next season’s newest range of recycled fashion wear. This year there will be three categories - Children 15 years and under, Chic Boutique for those who fancy themselves designers, and Trash Fash for those who don’t care what they look like as long as they get to strut the catwalk. The judging panel has been carefully chosen for their vast knowledge in recycled fashion. Hip hop artist Joelistics, beat boxing instrumentalist Mal Webb, singer and movement facilitator Santha Press and kiwi fruit farmer Ian Cummings will attend the Ecotopia Festival on 10 April. To be part of this prestigious event, email Melanie on mellie.allen@hotmail.com. There are great prizes to be won! And, there’s so much more.
Down to earth fun. 151604
ECOSS members, Tom Neil, Niree Bingham, Chelsea McNab, Camila Swan-Ward, Peter Henderson and Jo Butler, with some of the produce that will be at Ecotopia. 151604 There will be sustainability building, alternative energy and bee keeping demonstrations, worm farm testing tanks, kids’ water invertebrate’s search, the giant pumpkin competition and two stages packed choka block with live music, dancers and roving performers. The bands line-up includes Joelistics, Mal Webb, The Teskey Brothers, The Anecdote and Sound Mandala. Just when you think Ecotopia couldn’t get any groovier, there’s a silent disco, and, from the misty ponds of nostalgia, the Melbourne Connies (in uniform woo hoo!) handing out their own tickets of special wisdom. New to the festival, a whole area will be dedicated to food and beverage
tasting to celebrate the delicious cuisine produced in the Yarra Valley. If that’s all a bit too exciting, relax, there’ll be a healing area including massage, astrology reading, refloxology, reiki, or just a sit in the “pleasure dome”. Aligning with Year of the Platypus, Ecotopia’s theme this year is “River to Sea“, with lots of opportunities to learn how, as caretakers of the Upper Yarra, everyone can play a role in caring for our waterways. Consequences for life By JESSE GRAHAM PARAMEDIC and Yarra Ranges mayor, Jason Callanan, is asking young drivers to think of the consequences of bad driving behaviour, following a road safety forum in Lilydale. The Road Safety Forum, run by RoadWHYZ Victoria, was held at Mount Lilydale Mercy College on Wednesday, 23 March, bringing about 30 young people and their parents to the school’s hall. Cr Callanan, who is also RoadWHYZ Victoria’s director, said he opened the evening, and spoke about what happened when paramedics were called out to road crashes, and crashes he had personally attended. Former Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) Sergeant, Geoff Exton, then spoke about his role in investigating serious crashes and road deaths, and about the seriousness of culpable driving offences. “You can get 20 years for killing a person in a car, and for a lot of people, that’s their life,” Cr Callanan said. "He also explained some of the consequences, gave a good insight into how police investigated, and explained to them exactly how they were able to find out how people moved inside a car, the speed they were doing, the force of impact." James Wood then spoke to the attendees about how he crashed a truck, rolling down an embankment, after going too quickly and not wearing a seatbelt - and ended up permanently confined to a wheelchair. “So he talked about the ongoing issues he had, the restricted freedom we all take for granted - hopping on a pushbike, getting on a plane,” Cr Callanan said. A nurse, Julie Crowley, then explained basic life support skills that the young drivers could use, if they found themselves in a crash, or coming across one. Cr Callanan said that Ms Crowley went through the DRABC (Danger, Respond, Airway, Breathing, Circulation) first aid resuscitation process. He said the event was not to scold young drivers for bad behaviour, but to teach them about what could go wrong, and how it affected people’s lives. Static displays by Yarra Ranges
Some of the attendees and speakers at the Road Safety Forum at Mount Lilydale Mercy College on Wednesday, 23 March. 152083 Picture: CONTRIBUTED Council, METIC, Australian First Aid, SES and CFA were also at the forum for the young drivers to look at. Though Cr Callanan said the attendance for the event was lower than expected, he said he hoped that young drivers would take “one thing” away from the evening, which could potentially save lives. “I asked the parents and the young drivers to take one thing away ... pick one thing out of the program tonight, and said to them that ‘Actions change attitudes quicker than attitudes change
actions’,” he said. “They’ll remember a bit of skill from the CPR side of things, or they just help a mate by not allowing them to drive if they think they’re drunk, or telling them to put their seatbelt on that one thing could potentially save the lives of not just them, but others as well.” Casey MP, Tony Smith, partnered with Cr Callanan to run the evening, and congratulated the team on their “very powerful presentations”.
“It was an eye-opening night,” he said. “The young drivers and their parents who attended were incredibly engaged and left with extremely valuable information.” The Road Safety Forum was held just before the beginning of the Easter long weekend, which sees police ramp up road safety awareness, due to an increased number of fatalities and crashes over the four-day weekend. Cr Callanan said that drivers of all

ages should be aware of fatigue and make stops and rest-breaks on long journeys, as well as swapping drivers. “A half-hour extra in your trip to get somewhere isn’t going to be the end of the world, really,” he said. “However, if your child dies in the car - for everybody that has kids, that’s the end of the world for them.” He said that RoadWHYZ also runs presentations for schools. New performance hits the rare limits By JESSE GRAHAM A SPOKEN-word performance about the final days of the Tasmanian Tiger will grace stages in Healesville and Upwey in April, exploring present and past themes of extinction and gender equality in Australia. They Saw a Thylacine is a play that tells two stories - one, of a Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) tracker, played by Sarah Hamilton; the other, about a zoo-keeper’s daughter, played by Justine Campbell. The show is set in 1936, shortly before the world’s last known Tasmanian Tiger, a female named Benjamin, died in captivity at Beaumaris Zoo. Ms Hamilton said Ms Campbell’s character is based on Alison Reid, who was trained by her father to run the zoo, but the board of management would not allow her to take over her father’s post, due to her being a woman. “That actually had a big impact on the last Thylacine,” Ms Hamilton said. “They said to her, ‘We won’t pay you to run the zoo, but you can keep living in the curator’s cottage,’ which was just outside of the zoo, ‘And in return, you have to give us your services whenever required’.” But Reid never received keys to the zoo, and though she could hear Benjamin calling at night, she was unable to help the animal, which died of
Sarah Hamilton and Justine Campbell will perform They Saw a Thylacine in Healesville and Upwey in April. Picture: CONTRIBUTED exposure on a cold night. Meanwhile, Ms Hamilton said her character, Beatie, who is trying to find and capture a live Thylacine to sell to the zoo, is based on stories told by Tasmanians while the play was being researched.

She said the play explored extinction and gender equality - issues still important to this day, with the former being a focus of the work at Healesville Sanctuary. “I think this story is all too contemporary, because we have so many species on the brink of extinction at the moment,” Ms Hamilton said. “They (Healesville Sanctuary) have a great breeding program for the Tassie devils, but the devils are all but gone in the wild now. “We wear clothes that are contemporary in the show - we don’t wear period pieces ... we keep it in the here-and-now, because the issues are very relevant.” Though the show contains other characters, every part is performed by Ms Hamilton and Ms Campbell, in a spoken-word format. They Saw a Thylacine will be performed at Upwey’s Burrinja Cultural Centre on Thursday 14 April, and at Healesville’s Memo Hall on Friday 15 April. Tickets are $36, or $32 for concession holders, with a $28 ticket price for groups of more than six. Zootopia Starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman Rated PG ZOOTOPIA is another triumph in Disney’s second renaissance. In a civilisation of intelligent animals, Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes Zootopia’s first rabbit police officer. Teaming up with Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a wily fox con artist, Judy investigates a disturbing series of kidnappings. Without hyperbole, Zootopia is almost perfect.

ZOOTOPIA
ARTHOUSE MOVIES CROYDON
Every major character (but especially Judy and Nick) is irrepressibly likeable and has remarkable depth. The plot features an engrossing mystery beyond Judy and Nick’s endearing buddy-cop relationship, and Judy’s arc, in which she proves herself against extreme disapproval, is immensely gratifying. Despite its fanciful setting, Zootopia is a fun and poignant allegory for our own world, as it gracefully addresses issues of following your dreams, rising above social expectations, the effect of fear and the commonplace

nature of prejudice. Zootopia has some dark and genuinely frightening moments, but is still a vital film for children of all ages. With its anti-racism message of tolerance and inclusion, the film may take some of the wind out of Trump’s campaign sails. It’s rare to find a children’s film - heck, a major studio release of any kind that is so intelligent, moving and nuanced. Speaking for myself, Zootopia is my favourite film of the year so far. - Seth Lukas Hynes

BROOKLYN
SMOKE Stack Rhino are back with a new single ‘Screwdriver Girls’. Co-written by the band’s new line up, Screwdriver Girls came to life after vocalist Dave Sirianni brought the bare bones of the song’s grungey skeleton to the jam room. Appropriating an idea written on a dusty banjo, the track was then given a heavy dose of hillbilly, with guitarist Ash King’s love for bluegrass and Stevie Ray Vaughan shining through. The song is the also the first Smoke Stack tune to feature the disco influence of the band’s rhythm section, with drummer Jeremy Berg and bassist Shane Andison holding things together with a feel reminiscent of John Butler Trio’s recent material. While the song aptly demonstrates the evolution of the band, it also suggests a portent of Smoke Stack Rhino’s intentions on its upcoming full-length record, fusing together a diversity of influences and musicianship to craft a unique brand of Australian blues rock. Fresh from an east-coast tour, Smoke Stack Rhino will be at The Who Club in Warburton on Friday, 1 April.

Walkon a Warburton
Ranges get re-loaded
WEDNESDAY, 23 March: ‘The Walkon Resurrection Shuffle’: This is a novelty stableford event where individual scores are kept, and then all cards are thrown together with groups of three being pulled out to find the winners. This year the winner was ‘Girlpower’! Lisa King, Lynda Dickson and Kerry Slater. The r/up group comprised Gerry Hadfield, David Murch and Phil Garside. The NTPs went to Ian Garside on the third and the 10th; and to Ron Neilson (15th). Thursday Twilight: In the final twilight round before next week’s ‘shootout’ for the top 10 placegetters, Stan Slusarek won the night with 21 points. The clear r/up was Jason Kennedy on 20 points. The balls went down to 17. The NTP winners were Ossie McClay (3rd), Hatty (7th) and on the ninth, Malcolm Dickson. Saturday, 26 March: 4BBB Stableford: The winning pair were the Hall brothers (John and Geoff), with an outstanding 48 points accrued. The r/up team, of Shane Campbell and ‘Happy’ Gilmore, should be more than pleased with their 47 points. The ball rundown only extended to 42! The NTPs on the day went to Sean Kennedy (third), David Murch (fifth), Geoff-Fall (ninth), Geoff Hall (12th) and on the 15th, Mike Dobson.
By PETER DOUGLAS MANY up-and-coming junior footballers from around the Yarra Ranges have been rewarded for their hard work, with Eastern Ranges recently announcing its Under 18s squad for 2016. The Ranges enjoyed an outstanding season last year, losing the grand final by just 12 points to Oakleigh Chargers. The squad offers a pathway towards becoming drafted into the AFL system, as well as a chance to hone their skills within an elite environment. The opportunity will also grant them access to mentors to help guide them through the competitive environment. Some of the present-day stars to come out of the Eastern Ranges system include Collingwood forward Travis Cloke and Greater Western Sydney’s first pick of 2011, Jonathon Patton. Included in this year’s squad is a strong contingent of junior talents from both the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League and the Eastern Football League, who will be vying for game-time. Junior footballers from Yarra Ranges to be included: Aaron Beddoes (Montrose), Tristan Davies (Lilydale), Zachary Elms (Ferntree Gully), Jordan Gallucci (Lilydale), Joel Garner (Wandin), Harrison Goss (Lilydale), Joshua Hannon (Upwey-Tecoma), Sam Hayes (Ferntree Gully), Mitchell Jones (South Belgrave), Jarrod Marshall (Montrose), Shaun McMillan (Ferntree Gully), Harrison Nolan (Mount Evelyn), Jamie Shaw (Lilydale), Lachlan Sheppard (Emerald), Haydn Stanley (Upwey-Tecoma), Jaidyn Stephenson (Ferntree Gully), Tristan Tweedie (Lilydale) and Corey Wakefield (Upper Ferntree Gully). Meanwhile, AFL Yarra Ranges is working closely with the Eastern Ranges and AFL Victoria to bring a TAC Cup match to an AFL Yarra Ranges venue.

Motoring A big piece of Wolf Creek By KATH GANNAWAY EMMA Hall has a lot of memories tied up in the HG Holden Premier that she has transformed into her own little piece of Wolf Creek in Woori Yallock. It’s not all about the Australian drama/horror film either. The 40-year-old Woori Yallock mother of five has fond memories of driving around in her dad’s old XR Ford, nights out at the drive-ins with her brother and her in pyjamas in the back seat, and those shiny vinyl seats that you could fry an egg on on a hot day. “You’d get branded by the seatbelt buckle and have to peel yourself off the seat if you didn’t position your beach towel exactly right,” she said with great affection for the breed. Keith - named after Keith Richards, another old classic who just keeps going, is her ‘for me’ project. In fact, over time, it’s become a family project with Emma’s three sons and two daughters, although a little embarrassed to be seen in Keith at first, sharing a lot of quality time in the workshop. Emma purchased the car as a backyard find, for very little money, but with huge potential. It was never her intention to restore Keith - how could you? “I wanted to create an old workhorse, outback theme which would invoke a lot of memories - the sort of thing you would see if you were travelling in the middle of the outback,” she said. It had 800,000ks on the clock and was a mess when she took it on. “The first thing I did was rip out the old carpet and clean it up, which took about three months. “I had no idea if the motor was even going to run but with clean fuel and a service, it kicked over on the first turn of the key.” That was a sweet moment. Turning Keith into a replica of the infamous Wolf Creek car required imagination, a handy paint product that gives the rust effect that most people want to get rid of, and a lot of hard work in the workshop. Car parts in the dishwasher and panels in the bathtub are nothing unusual in the Hall household. The props, including barbed wire around the number plates and the odd body part hanging from the window, and blood and a bit of hair in the grille,

sponse,” Emma said. “There is never a moment when someone is not prodding it, remarking on it and wanting to know more about the car and how it has come together. “I hope it’s inspiring others who don’t have a lot of money to spend on a car to go down the road of just capturing the car at its stage in life, admit it’s an old car and it’s not perfect,” she said. She calls it ‘imperfect perfection’. Was it a mid-life crisis fix? “No ... that would be buying a V8,” she says, laughing. But, it was definitely a stage of life project. “Obviously raising five kids, you’re always busy but you find as they are getting older and more independent their needs and wants are a lot less and you have time to do something for yourself.”
Emma Hall had a vision of 'imperfect perfection' in "Keith". 151044 Picture: ROB CAREW are all part of the macabre illusion. Although she was reluctant at first to take Keith along to car shows, she
discovered that grunge was as popular as shiny chrome with car enthusiasts. “I was absolutely floored by the re-
Keith has become part of a much bigger picture for Emma, who is also part of a movie car group which stages runs and shows to raise money for various causes and also featured in a 10th anniversary Wolf Creek promotion at a picture theatre. Emma has a message for any ‘girls’ out there who are thinking about joining what used to be a male domain car restoration and transformation. “Don’t let anything stop you,” she says. “This is not a male-oriented thing any more and anyone can do it. “Give it a go and you will be amazed at what you can come up with, and just how much fun it can be.” You can meet Emma and Keith at the Mountain District Car and Bike Show at Healesville on Sunday, 10 April.
