New-look council By TANIA PHILLIPS THE new-look Southern Downs Council will be sworn in on Wednesday after the poll was declared just before noon on Wednesday 30 March. Tracy Dobie was confirmed as the mayor, finishing well ahead of her nearest rivals in the poll while another woman, sitting councillor Jo McNally finished on top of the poll for the councillors according to the final figures. Cr McNally finished with 6842
ahead of new-comer Rod Kelly 6773, returning councillor Cameron Gow 6677, returning councillor Neil Meikeljohn 6630, Yve Stocks 6451, Sheryl Windle 6314, returning councillor Vic Pennisi 6108 and Marika McNicholl 6064. The council will now feature four returning councillors and four newcomers as well as the new mayor. There will now be four female councillors and four males with Ms Dobie as mayor, giving the Southern Downs Council a female majority for the first time.
“It does look like a good mix,” Mayor-elect Dobie said. “The experience will stand us in good stead; and the new ideas will mean that we will be looking at the region with fresh eyes.” Jo McNally said she was very pleased and relieved with the results of the poll and thanked the people of the Southern Downs for their support. Like Mayor-elect Dobie, Cr McNally believed that the new-look council was a “good mix”.

She said that as a member of the board of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association it was great to see five females on the council this time. She said women make up the majority in the Southern Downs Community and it was nice to have the council reflect that. “It was a great achievement for Tracy, she won well and wasn’t just over the line,” she said. Cr McNally said it was definitely a “new council and a new beginning”.

Council compares well SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council’s general rates and charges have fared well in a comparison of 13 local governments in Queensland. Southern Downs Regional Council’s chief executive officer David Keenan said council had reviewed the 2014/'15 rates and charges under the Queensland Government’s Comparative Information Return. “All local governments are required to complete the State Government’s annual comparative information return,” he said. In terms of the 2014/'15 rates and charges comparison, Southern Downs’ average general net rate payable per annum is ranked seventh, which is bang in the middle of the 13 category three councils. “However, if you consider the complete package of rates and charges, Southern Downs is one of better performing councils, with the third lowest average net rates and charges and the third lowest sewerage charge compared with the other cat-
egory three councils. “Ratepayers concerned about the escalating cost of rates and charges often compare Southern Downs with councils such as Brisbane and the Gold Coast. However, comparisons with these sorts of councils really reflect an ‘apples versus oranges’ scenario, because there are significant differences across a range of factors including, but not limited to, population, geographical area, and services provided. “That’s why it’s important to compare councils that have been included in the same category by the Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal. “Councils are included in a particular category having regard to the size, geographical and environmental terrain of each local government area; the population, including the area’s demographics, the spread of population serviced by the local government and the extent of the services the local government provides,” Mr Keenan said.
Southern Downs Regional Council is one of 13 category three councils, including: Cassowary Coast Regional Council Central Highlands Regional Council Gympie Regional Council Isaac Regional Council Livingstone Shire Council, Lockyer Valley Regional Council Noosa Shire Council Scenic Rim Regional Council South Burnett Regional Council Southern Downs Regional Council Tablelands Regional Council Western Downs Regional Council Whitsunday Regional Council. “This favourable comparative result demonstrates that, despite much public commentary that rates and charges in our region are higher than many other regions, rates and charges in the Southern Downs are actually quite low when compared with alike councils,” he said. “Council does understand the community’s concerns about the level of rates and charges, and the financial pressures from increasing costs of living.
In brief Youth faces multiple charges
“However, it’s also important for the community to understand that council faces these same pressures, and is operating in a constrained environment. “The freezing of the Federal Assistance Grants and the reduction in State Government grants and subsidies that relate to operational activities means that council needs to continually identify revenue streams to support staff and the delivery of high standards of service to both the urban and rural communities. “This has meant that council has had to re-evaluate the true cost of delivering these high quality services. In determining these costs, council has benchmarked the services it delivers against other similar Local Government authorities. “Council will continue to review the services it delivers to the community to identify further areas for savings and efficiencies,” Mr Keenan said.
A 17-YEAR-OLD Broadwater youth will face Stanthorpe Magistrates' Court in April, charged with one count of burglary, entering a vehicle with intent to steal, entering premises and stealing, unlawful trespass and possessing a knife in public. This resulted from a series of incidents that occurred just before midnight Friday when police allege the offender broke into the premises in Marsh Street. Officer-in-charge of Stanthorpe police Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said police were proceeding to an address when they were diverted to Archibald Street when an offender was found breaking into a vehicle and was pursued by local residents. He said a short time after arrival police located the offender hiding in bushes in a nearby yard. A quantity of assorted stolen property was also located nearby. The offender was also found to be in possession of knife at the time of being located.

EASTER traffic patrols resulted in the issuing of a large number of traffic infringements for a variety of offences including five drug drivers and two drink drivers. The drug drivers, all males and aged between 21 and 37 years, tested positive to either amphetamines or cannabis. The two drink drivers, again both males and aged 21 and 23 years, recorded .104 per cent and .071 per cent on the breathalyser.

SEARCH warrants were executed by Stanthorpe Criminal Investigation Branch over the past week, according to Senior Sgt Mark Ireland. He said one warrant in Greenup Street on the morning of 24 March resulted in the location of a quantity of cannabis, methamphetamine, smoking utensils used for smoking cannabis and methamphetamine, scales and other drug paraphernalia. Inquiries are continuing regarding the seizure, and it is expected charges will be laid in coming days. He said another search warrant executed a short time later in Britannia Street resulted in the location of cannabis and smoking utensils, with the 38-year-old female occupant being charged accordingly. A 22-year-old male tourist was also charged with possessing cannabis after the vehicle he was driving was stopped by police in Rogers Street about 1.30am on Sunday.

Stormy polocrosse Casey’s tips
A HEAVY storm rolled over Morgan Park Warwick in the final stages of the prestigious Shell Cup Polocrosse final on Sunday, slowing play and dashing home club Warwick’s chances of a repeat win. The storm arrived at a critical point in the main game, with Warwick on the charge to make up a narrow lead against rivals Sydney. Players continued to battle it out for club and state supremacy in the rain, but the fast pace of the game was slowed and so were Warwick’s chances of regaining the lead. Unlike last year where Warwick beat Tansey in an epic battle that saw the home club hang on in the dying minutes of the game to take out the Shell Cup by just one point, this year Warwick trailed by five points at the end of the game. The final score was Sydney 18 to Warwick 13. Despite the excellently prepared fields at Morgan Park holding up well to the heavy play, the storm also caused the cancellation of the Barastoc Interstate Series Men's game with Queensland due to take on New South Wales in the final. The Barastoc Interstate Series and Shell Cup Competition, which was the first carnival of Queensland’s Polocrosse season, attracted 76 teams in total. Polocrosse riders, their horses and support crew collectively travelled thousands of kilometres to take to the field with some from as far away as Victoria and down past Sydney in the South, as well as all over Queensland. Almost 500 horses and riders competed over three days of state representative and two days of club level polocrosse games. Eighteen teams of six players from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria took to the field to do battle for state pride at the ninth annual Barastoc Interstate Series. The Barastoc Interstate Series comprised eight different levels of competition: Men's, Women's, Under 21 Men's, Under 21 Women's, Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Mixed Masters and Mixed Under 30s. Warwick Polocrosse Club president Les Fraser said the interstate games were some of the best polocrosse he had seen in the history of the competition. Many of the horses and riders in the Barastoc Interstate Series are in heavy training in the lead-up to the 2016 Australian Polocrosse Nationals being held in Albury from 18 to 24 April. “Never before have we run this type of interstate competition only one month out from the Nationals,” Mr Fraser said. “Having this strong competition in the lead-up to Nationals will improve the level of play, so it should be a hardfought battle for State pride.” New South Wales again led the Interstate Series, clinching victory in

four of seven divisions. The Women’s Team, Under 30 Mixed Team and Under 21 Men’s Team played hard against interstate rivals to secure a win for Queensland. No result was recorded for the Men’s final which couldn’t be played due to the weather. A further 58 club teams competed in the Shell Cup and club competition, making for exciting viewing from the sidelines. An estimated 4500 spectators passed through the gates over the three days and two nights to cheer on their favourite teams and riders. Warwick Polocrosse Club boasts one of the world’s premier Polocrosse facilities. Seven fully turfed Polocrosse fields, one of which is floodlit for night games, and impressive facilities for the horses, including undercover stalls, is one of the reasons that the Warwick carnivals are so well attended. Established in 1953, Warwick Polocrosse Club thought to be the oldest club in Queensland, is the venue for the next World Cup in three years’
time. Their forward planning has seen a lot of infrastructure put in place for spectators and those camping on the grounds making to the perfect venue for 2019 World Cup. Cunningham Polocrosse Club will host the next South East Queensland carnival this coming weekend at Bony Mountain Recreation Reserve. It is a multi-horse carnival, so it will be an exciting competition for all weekend riders trialling young horses. Fresh horses will be available for finals on Sunday. Polocrosse is a fast-paced team sport played on horseback. It combines the speed of polo, the strategy and tactics of netball (in terms of the field being divided in to three sections), the toughness of rugby and AFL and the ball handling ability of lacrosse. This unique sport originated in Australia in 1939 and is dubbed as the “King of the One Horse Sports.” Polocrosse is currently played in 18 countries and boasts more than 10,000 players worldwide.

DON McKechnie has been awarded life membership of the Rose City Probus Club following more than a decade of work. Don was one of a local group of people responsible for the establishment of the Probus organisation in Warwick in 2003, becoming a foundation member and vice-president of the Warwick Combined Probus Club, early that year. In 2012, when the number of retirees interested in joining a Probus club in Warwick increased to the point, where a second Probus club was necessitated, Don worked tirelessly with both Warwick Rotary clubs and Probus South Pacific Limited, to see that a second club, Rose City Warwick Probus Club, eventuated. Rose City Probus Club now has a membership of more than 80, so it is highly likely that in time, a third club will be formed in Warwick. Don has held the offices of founding vice-president, secretary, president and welfare officer within the two clubs, dedicating much of his leisure time to the promotion of Probus affairs. He has fostered friendly relationships between district Probus clubs at Highfields, Stanthorpe, Tenterfield and Beaudesert during his time in Probus.

Blundered THE council elections were, in two words, “organised chaos”. There is no other explanation for the distorted privacy and organisational incompetence that has bedevilled what should have been an everyday activity for the Electoral Commission Queensland. There were too many intertwining blunders to be ignored and this writer calls upon the ECQ to redo the entire election. Too much depends on the result, for the ratepayers burdened by massive debt carried by council, to trust an election result with this degree of incompetence. Melba Morris, Allora.

What’s On Jazzed up for July WATCH out for some very cool jazz this July with the Jumpers and Jazz in July Festival partnering with the Jazz Music Institute of Brisbane for the first time. The Fortitude Valley-based JMI is a specialist jazz school delivering courses in jazz performance since 1997. The JMI has formed a promotional partnership with the festival through sponsorship. The festival will promote the institute as a quality musical education facility, which may well appeal to Southern Downs music students. In addition, they will send one of their feature bands - JMI New Orleans Street Band to perform as part of the festival jazz program. As either a roving or stationary band, the JMI New Orleans Street Band rolls into Warwick as a five-piece ensemble on Friday 29 July to perform on the street at the Downtown Lounge Stage outside the historic Warwick Town Hall in Palmerin Street. This will indeed be the place to be on the second weekend of the festival as the JMI musicians will be playing alongside another exciting new addition to the festival jazz scene, Brisbane Jazz muso’s, The Mal Woods Band. Wynton Marsalis, internationally acclaimed musician and composer is a supporter of the JMI Brisbane program. “This is one of the first jazz curriculums that addresses the entire fundamental range of jazz styles; from New Orleans to Bebop
And now for the super ho-hum Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (MA 15+) Starring: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams
Master musician Dan Quigley. to Modern, it’s all there,” Mr Marsalis said. Following their first performance, festival goers can look out for the Festival Jazz Jam from 5.30pm - knock-off drinks time - when both these bands head to The Criterion Hotel to jam with each other and any local musicians who care to join them. As a roving act, JMI New Orleans Band will also appear at the Saturday 30 July Warwick Credit Union Stoll and Swing
event and the Sunday 31 July Picnic in the Park, so everyone on the Southern Downs will have the opportunity to experience the traditional music of New Orleans. The full Jumpers and Jazz in July program will be announced in May on the festival website. The 10-day festival which kicks off on Thursday 21 July will run until Sunday 31 July.
DARK, brooding and full of special effects, I could be describing the past three Batman movies - instead it’s the latest instalment, the cross-over Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or the movie they use to set the scene for the Justice League. BvS pits the man of steel against the dark bat crusader of Gotham City. Fearing the actions of a godlike superhero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day saviour, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. With Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before. Well that’s the premise. What we get is something a little less satisfying. While the past Batman movies have been gritty and interesting, this just comes off as a mish-mash
that director Zack Snyder has thrown every conceivable trick at and hoped it would work. And it does, for the most part, though it could have benefitted from tighter editing and a few less effects and a bit more story. However, for a movie like this truly to succeed it relies not on the good guys (and despite the teeth gnashing that went on when he was announced, Ben Affleck is actually rather perfect as Batman) - no, it has a strong bad guy. Here is where this movie falls down. Jesse Eisenberg is absolutely perfect as the Riddler, inspired casting really, it’s just a shame he’s actually playing Lex Luther. Sure he is unhinged and unstable but he comes off more whiney than anything else - a little boy who is playing with his superhero action figures and who will pout and cry if he doesn’t get his own way. All in all this is a fairly standard superhero movie - it doesn’t do more than what it says on the box, it doesn’t move the genre further, it doesn’t break new ground. - Tania Phillips

BECCY COLE Getting ready to brighten up Warwick in July.
BOMBS away as the Warwick Art Gallery yarnbombing team gets preparations underway for this year's Jumpers and Jazz in July. The group has exciting plans for this year, but is looking for help. From the humble beginnings of a yarnbombed VW Beetle in 2010, the ever expanding team have been surprising festival goers with more fabulous and ambitious projects each year. The very popular Knitchen of 2014, a life-sized retro kitchen created entirely from yarn by a team of 50, was a huge hit with thousands of festival visitors. Last year, the combined efforts of 100 knitters and crocheters resulted in the spectacu-
lar Woollow Tree. A celebration of the Southern Downs seasons, the tree spread its colourful branches over the Warwick Art Gallery courtyard, bringing smiles to faces with many delightful knitted and crocheted details. Warwick Art Gallery assistant and yarnbombing co-ordinator Loretta Grayson said she had big plans for this year’s festival and enjoyed meeting new team members just as much as working on the project itself. “Everyone is welcome to join us”, says Loretta. “We have many wonderful locals who help us out, as well as people from all over Australia who post their contributions to us. You can knit or crochet at home, or enjoy the creative
atmosphere of our group meetings.” This year the team is taking their talents to the centre of the Warwick CBD, where a colourful “yarntopian” garden of delights will grow, creating a cosy oasis for the enjoyment of festival goers. Intrigued? If you can knit or crochet a square, you can be part of the fun! For the first stage of their plans, the team are looking for hundreds each of 20cm crocheted granny squares in shades of green, and 20cm knitted squares in shades of blue. For more information, contact Warwick Art Gallery on 07 4661 0434 or email loretta. grayson@sdrc.qld.gov.au

★★ ★ STARSCOPE ARIES—March 21-April 20 Avoid weekend risk-taking as you tend to be accident prone. Legal negotiations swing in your favour. Your romantic instincts are sharp - follow your heart, not your sense of logic.

Casey’s tips
ten With mayor-elect Tracy Dobie
TAURUS—April 21-May 22 New and younger acquaintances, foreign visitors and distant relatives find their way into your world. Friends take you in their confidence - but don’t let them tell all. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 Neighbours are buzzing with news - take much of it with more than a grain of salt. A loved one seems cool but your first impression, here and elsewhere, may prove far from correct. CANCER—June 22-July 22 Reluctant acquaintances go out of their way to accomodate you - check for strings that could be attached. A mini windfall may strike by the end of the week. LEO—July 23-August 22 The keywords now are simplification and cutting back. Doing this will lead ultimately to expansion. Formerly impractical plans can be put to use. The weekend offers a chance to see new places. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 You are given to excesses now, but don’t go overboard expressing emotions. Search for the right word and wait for the perfect moment. Sports and cultural events could introduce you to a new friend. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 Your friendship circle is enlarged now. Your financial status can be upgraded when you combine hard work with creativity. Out of town guests may drop by on the weekend. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 Avoid financial or other potentially costly risks, for your hunches are weak right now. This is a great week for decoration and creating something out of nothing. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 Selectivity is the week’s keyword. There are many choices on the platter - pick those which are beneficial in the long term. Thrift pays off now. A loved one is ready for commitment. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 An enterprising Capricorn can make a lot out of a little this week. Your imagination is unusually active.Try not to resist change. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 An optimistic outlook helps you over a domestic obstacle and on to more cheerful horizons. Meeting the increased demands of a superior is beneficial in the long term. PISCES—February 20-March 20 Cheerful news from out of town highlights a busy work week. You can help friends unearth hidden talents and enhance their self confidence. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK A polished conversationalist, your verbal skills give you the edge over the competition - but while you are sensitive to the needs of others, you can be a little vague and a little secretive. The accent for the rest of this year is on ideas and intellectual relationships.
1) What is something people don’t know about you? I hate walking barefoot. 2) What has been the most memorable moment of your life to date? The day I met my husband. It was in 1981, and we only spoke for a few minutes but the memory stuck in my mind. We didn’t meet again until 1983 and we’ve been together ever since. 3) If you had to choose, what would your last meal on Earth be? Steak, chips and salad with a glass of red wine, followed by ice-cream. 4) If you could witness any event, past, present or future, what would it be? The moon landing is still right up there in my memory. As a student, it represented so much for that time: science, discovery, technology and spectacle. 5) What is your favourite television show? VEEP 6) What is your favourite book? Pastures of the Blue Crane by Hesba Fay Brinsmead. I read this book as a kid and I loved it. I still have my original copy. 7) You are hosting a dinner party and can invite six guests, dead or alive. Who would they be? Nancy Wake, Sir Donald Bradman, Janet Holmes a Court, Mark Donaldson, Robert de Castella, Cathy Freeman. 8) What has been your most embarrassing moment to date? I’m 57 years old. There have been many embarrassing moments. 9) If you could live in a particular era, which would you choose? Now. The past doesn’t really interest me. I’m all about today and tomorrow. 10) What was the first or best concert you have ever attended? The first and worst was Cliff Richard. The best was Paul Simon.

Gill’s jet set for friend’s century By JOYCE MARSH WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT. THERE is no stopping Gillian Allerton, the Woodenbong Octogenarian plus, has planned a trip to England to celebrate the 100th birthday of friend Ros Akrill. Gill is a community minded person and still active with many groups and committees including Urbenville Hospital Auxiliary, Red Cross Kyogle and Bible Study Group. Her interests include children, gardening, horses, and ballet which she gleaned from a childhood teaching of ballet by a Russian ballerina Madam Zercokowich. Gill loves Rally Cars and V8 Supercar racing.
Gill plans her next trip to the UK.
Gill was born in England, and at age four, while her mother was expecting another child, Gill broke her arm while playing and they needed help to cope so a family friend, Ros Akrill stepped up and a bond was forged. Gill recalls how Ros has always been in her life, friends forever, and speaks very endearingly of her. This friendship has lasted through great distances and years apart. Gill’s father bought a farm in Kenya in 1945 and moved the family abroad. Gill recalls the wonderful life they had there. Africa remains in her heart and leaves a legacy of the love of animals and family ties. Later in life, Gill moved to
Australia with her husband and baby daughter, Jenny, and later had another child, Jean. The family history that led to this close and permanent unforgettable friendship with Ros, has inspired get-togethers where she visited Gill at Woodenbong in 1998 at age 82, and Gill travelled to England to celebrate Ros’ 90th birthday in 2006 and later this year is heading off to celebrate Ros’ 100th birthday with her at NewarkOn-Trent, Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands of England. Gill is travelling with daughter Jenny and plans to visit her sister in Devon and family and friends and travel around England for seven weeks.

Signing off in fine style The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
PETER Moody closed the door on his training facility last week, but not before a parting shot over the bows of Victorian racing by way of another Group One victory when Flamberge claimed a thrilling win in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley. Moody began his six-month suspension, and has announced he will not return to the training ranks any time soon - if ever and never as a large scale public trainer. The knock about bloke from Charleville, who has experienced all the highs and lows, has ruled out a return to racing at the end of his six-month suspension. He leaves the sport as the winner of 2400 races, 54 of them at Group One level. Not bad for a bloke who was happy to nail a maiden at Ipswich. The Cobalt saga which has effectively ended Moody’s career has dragged on for over 18 months and despite being found not guilty of administering the substance, it has soured his joy of the game. His journey to try and clear his name would be enough to wear anyone down - not to mention his legal costs. The ban is not the ideal way to exit the industry, but Moody’s record will stand the test of time. While we will always remember and reflect on the glory of the great Nellie, Black Caviar, his career never hinged on her success. He has trained six of the past seven Australian horses of the year. Unfortunately he never got to hold aloft one of the big ones a Melbourne Cup or Caulfield Cup, a Cox Plate or Golden Slipper. Moody, who has seen and done it all from Western Queensland to Royal Ascot, remains a bloke of simple pleasures - enjoying a beer and a smoke. While Moody says he is happy with his decision to call time on his career, he admits he will miss racing. Methinks racing is going to miss him - We have lost one of the few remaining real characters of the industry. And what of the Cobalt saga - it still continues. Good call racing Victoria. - Casey NO EASTER FAVOURS THERE were few if any Easter favours in the NRL results over the long weekend, however fans did get to dip into the box of chocolates and grab another taste of sensational football on Friday night when the Broncos and Cowboys turned on a repeat of the grand final fireworks - albeit with a different outcome. Few would have dreamed that the game could or would live up to the hype after the grand final heroics, but Friday night’s game will stand on its own as another sensational example of all that is wonderful about the game of rugby league. For this tipster, it was the highlight of a round of up and down results. We kick off the round with the Sea Eagles and Rabbitohs at Brooky. Far from getting the chocolates, the Bunnies got skinned alive by the Bulldogs. Bunnies fans will be hoping for a return from Sam Burgess and perhaps that will be the difference. With no certainty, I am happy to give the Bunnies another chance. This week the Broncos travel down the M15 on Friday night to Titans heartland in a clash with the young cousins. The Titans have been showing much improvement, but I cannot to see them upsetting the Broncos. Melbourne Storm players will have been facing the wrath of their coach all week after a dismal performance against the Sharks saw them beaten for the first time this season. Hard to see them repeating that performance against the Sharks. The Cowboys are back at Dairyfarmers after that epic battle against the Broncos and should deal with the Dragons.
Peter Solomon standing his ground. The Tigers Sharks encounter is a tough one for punters, but I am leaning towards the Sharks after their impressive win over Melbourne. The Roosters remain winless, but I am prepared to give them one more chance before sacking them for the season and think they can get the points against the Warriors. The Eels have been the surprise packet this season and despite some injury concerns should win a tough game against the Panthers. On Monday night, the Dogs look too tough for the Raiders. EASTER WIN FOR PURCEL A SINGLE stroke event was decided on Saturday at Wallangarra. Shane Purcel and Steve Hampstead finished the event equal on 64 nett. Following a countback, Purcel was declared the winner. Hampstead had to settle for the runner-up position. Scott Williams was only one shot back in third place. The pin shots were also shared among the winners. Purcel nabbed the chocolates at three and 11 and Hampstead the ninth. This week a single stableford has been scheduled for Saturday’s club event. An early reminder - the club championships will be played over the weekends of 16 and 17 April and 23 and 24 April. Important dates for your golfing diaries. HOPPING ALL OVER THE COURSE AFTER the work completed on the greens at the Stanthorpe Golf Club during the previous week, golfers were out and about seeking the Easter Bunny or at the very least “hopping” for good scores in the 4BBB medley stableford. The event was won by the team of Dale Minchenton and Alan Kerr with a score of 49 points. Dale, who opened her winning account on the course only the previous week, and with playing partner Alan combined to go out with 26 points and 23 inward for their win. Graham Tonkin and Jake Mills also had a good round. The pair finished with 47 points to take out the runners-up spot. Men’s pin shots went to Graham Tonkin at 3/12 and Aaron Simmers at 17. Rachael Hendry had best pin shot for the ladies at 3/12 and Hannah Reeves had best approach at 17. Pro-pins went the way of Stephen Kay at 1/10, Simon Shannon (who sponsored the day) at 5/14 and Ian Harvey at 9/18. There were several final scores of 46 points which was the limit of the run down. The Special sponsor’s prize for the most appropriately dressed went to the team of Keith Barnett and Neta Thouard who dazzled the sponsor
Happier times for the Peter Moody stable – leading in superstar Black Caviar after another sensational win this time at Doomben in 2011. with their colourful attire. Junior golf is on the calendar and is set to recommence on Tuesday 12 May, 3.30pm. Members are asked to pass on the information to junior golfers wishing to continue playing or who have a desire to get into the game. The time for Pennants is almost upon us and any player who would like to put his name forward should contact Darryl Boekholt. Rob McConnell, Warwick golf pro, will be at Stanthorpe this weekend. If you would like lessons or require special golf gear, give him a ring call. Saturday is the April monthly medal and putting competition. It is also the final round of the Pike Trophy, with the best two of three rounds to count, there are several players in contention. It is also the one round event - the Nuffield Cup. The Nuffield Cup and the medal round is being sponsored by Mark McCosker. Tee off from 11.30am and the time sheet is on the board. CONTRIBUTION OF COACH RECOGNISED TRACEY Sexton who has been a coach with the Warwick RDA (Riding for the Disabled) for 10 years and recently was awarded the Condamine Sports Club volunteer of the Year Award. Tracey, who also held the position of secretary of the organisation for several years, attends to the maintenance of the riding gear and also looks after the ponies. Up to 15 children each week attend RDA, and Sexton also liaises with teachers and physiotherapists about each child’s individual circumstance and how their skills can be improved through the experience of riding. Tracey was nominated by an RDA member, who highlighted her efforts in recruiting a group of volunteers mainly students from Scots PGC College and Assumption College which is a great initiative. She has also travelled widely to RDA conferences to ensure Warwick RDA is kept up to date with the latest practices. Tracey's involvement in coaching extends beyond RDA, she has also been heavily involved in coaching at pony club level and also international school equestrian events. A truly dedicated volunteer - without her dedication and expertise, it is unlikely RDA would taste the success that it currently enjoys. NOT FOR FEINT HEARTED BUNNIES INGLEWOOD was not the place for any feinthearted bunnies over the Easter Break as the Great Easter Bunny Shoot got underway. It was fun for
all (unless you were a bunny) a timed event, using a combination of single action and action pistol. Of course, neither furry nor chocolate rabbits were harmed during the course of the event which kicked off with spotlighting rabbits Saturday night. Rabbits were set up with reflectors for eyes. Shooters were stationed at the benches in the dark. When the spotlight hit the rabbit, the shooter had five seconds to aim and shoot with a total of five shots per event. Of course the fun was not just restricted to Bunnies, there was the Ram silhouette hunt. With five target rams set on top of the 50 metre frames. No truth that the Easter Bunny stole the final results - Tom Donald obviously had the most fun with silhouettes and spotlighting bunnies taking out the event ahead of Stephanie Dudgeon and Michael Dudgeon. There were plenty of players pleased that young Will Dudgeon was shooting junior because his score was better than the seniors. In Sunday, two competitors Iain Bowen and Peter Solomon set up a jungle run Action Pistol competition which was shot using Centrefire and Rimfire pistols. Results of the Centrefire were a win to Iain Bowen ahead of Peter Russell and Peter Solomon. Apparently Tom Donald hates the Glock. In the Rimfire, Peter Russell claimed a win over Tom Donald and Stephanie Dudgeon. In Monday morning’s action pistol event, Donald outmaneuvered Ray and Stephanie Dudgeon who finished in second and third sport. All in all, it was a great weekend on the range. STANTHORPE / TEXAS OPEN THEIR ACCOUNT THE recently merged Stanthorpe Gremlins and Texas Terriers will step out this weekend for the first time as the BRL 2016 season gets underway. The Stanthorpe Texas side will play the Inglewood Roosters who are back in the competition after a couple of seasons in moth balls. The Stanthorpe / Texas side which will be coached by Nathan Shatte. That game will be played in Inglewood and there will be no preceding Ladies side as Inglewood will not be fielding a League Tag side this season. The Wallangarra Rams will host the Tigers in their season opener. The Tigers were successful in the recent Men’s Round Robin and should go into this game as favourites. For the Tigerettes, it is the first game in their quest to secure three consecutive League tag premierships. The Killarney Cutters have the bye this weekend.

Bunnies glowing in the dark at Inlgewood. ONE STEP CLOSER AUSTRALIA took another step towards the next Football World Cup with an epic 5-1 win over Jordan in their World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night. The Socceroos are now into the third and final stage of World Cup qualifying and look likely to secure a berth in their fourth consecutive World Cup after topping their group and scoring 29 goals in eight games against quality opposition. Never one to mince words, Aussie coach Ange Postecoglou took aim at the Australian public following this week’s big win - telling supporters to “Wake up and take notice - to respect the strength of his side after their Asian Cup triumph and stellar performances in the first round of qualification”. Australia bounced back from a shock 2-nil defeat by Jordan early in their campaign, however the Socceroos have won every qualifier since. The presence of English football icon Harry Redknapp in the Jordanian side failed to inspire the visitors who now must wait to see where they are ranked among four second-placed teams from the eight qualifying groups. For the Australian, however, the game delighted a big crowd at Allianz who braved wet conditions to see the Socceroos what many described as a clinic of collective excellence. No surprise that Tim Cahill starred, scoring
Iain Bowen on the move through the jungle run. twice in the first half. He did, however, squander an opportunity to grab a hat-trick with four minutes to play, side-footing his effort directly to the goalkeeper Aaron Mooy, Tom Rogic and Massimo Luongo were the other goal scorers in a superb effort. Postecoglou urged sports fans not to lose sight of the strength and significance of the win, with a reminder that Jordan finished fifth in the last World Cup. SHIELD NUMBER 30 PERHAPS WHILE the Australian T20 cricket team make their way home after having their pants pulled down by an outstanding Indian cricket team who must be favourites to win the T20 World Cup on the domestic front, the final of the Sheffield Shield is drawing to a conclusion as this column is finalised. With the Vics requiring just 98 runs, it is hard to imagine they will not wrap up back to back Shield wins on Wednesday in Adelaide. The Redbacks will be looking for a miracle collapse to save their bacon, however, they are without their strike bowler Chadd Sayers and did not help their chances on day four with some sloppy fielding. A win to the Bushrangers would break the 11 season hoodoo of away teams winning the final and give the Victorians their 30th Shield win. A figure Queenslanders can only dream of.
TOO MUCH IMPROVEMENT WHEN is too much improvement too much? Winner of the Women’s division of the Stawell Gift and the $40,000 cheque teenager Talia Martin must be asking the question. The 15-year-old has been fined $2000 for the extraordinary improvement in her time compared with two weeks ago in Ararat. In the Stawell final, she ran seven metres quicker than she had in Ararat. Some, however, smell a rat saying the win has all the hallmarks of a 1960s Stawell Gift sting,” Over the history of the event, there are many stories of stings where it has all been about beating the handicapper. Martin’s extraordinary win comes as she is dealing with the death of a close family member. Stawell Gift chief steward Brian Marantelli said an improvement of that size - between Martin’s race time in Ararat and her race time in the Stawell Gift - was often not achievable over a lifetime, let alone in a matter of weeks. Throughout the year, she has consistently run 14.5 seconds. She won the Gift on Monday -off a 13-metre handicap - in 13.7 seconds. Martin’s odds with the bookmakers plunged from $21 on Friday to $5 before she ran Saturday to finally be odds on at $1.80 on Monday for the final.
Coach Peter O’Dwyer, a pro running veteran of the Gift, has coached the past three women’s gift winners -all teenagers. He said Martin had won the junior Stawell Gift in the past two years as a 13- and 14-yearold, which proved she was a class athlete and her form exposed to handicappers. Now if this was a horse race, Peter Bailey would be apoplectic and another 15-month-inquiry would no doubt ensue. However, luckily for the winner the Sponsors were only too happy to hand over the trophy and the winner’s cheque. EASTER BREAK AFFECTS NUMBERS THE Easter holiday break had an effect on numbers available for association croquet. With player numbers down, there was an opportunity for an early benchmark. Effey Russell played well in her game against Andrea Denkewitz. The final score a convincing 18-10. Joy Newman was at the top of her game also. She defeated heather Widderick 26-15 in their game. In other games, Heather bounced back to team with Jenny Turnbridge and turned the tables on Joy Newman and Carol Verney - the score 23-17. Margaret Dickenson and Val Sheppard proved too good against the team of Effey Russell and Andrea Denkewitz - scores 23-17. A reminder that the Stanthorpe Croquet Club will be holding come n try days on 16 and 17 April.
