■ The truth is out there - somewhere...
UFO in the air By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

The Journal’s first report of the Westall UFO mystery.
Mr Carroll, now 78 years old and living in Castlemaine, remembers getting the call-out to the high school after a tip-off from a Clayton stringer that day. He was led to a nearby grassed area where the objects allegedly landed. “The grass had been pressed down
A former Air Force member in the Journal office thought the incident was just a military target practice exercise. “But I said to him there are no military airports anywhere nearby,” Mr Carroll recalls. “I didn’t really come out with any opinion at all.”

For many days afterwards, he found himself sidelined from the looming federal election. He often had to field interrogatory phone calls from a “mad Yank” from a Moordialloc UFO society. “It was a fun story to do.” Continued page 6

IF MOBILE phones had been in the hands of frenzied Westall High School students in 1966, who knows how Dandenong Journal reporter Des Carroll may have covered one of the world’s most enduring UFO mysteries? Fifty years on, Mr Carroll’s conspiratorial stories of up to three silver flying objects hovering and vanishing from the skies above a paddock beside the Clayton South school still ring true. The question of what more than 100 people saw in broad daylight on 6 April 1966 remains unanswered. There were, however, no photos or videos of the awesome event and nothing more elaborate than a hand drawing of a flying saucer shape graced the Journal’s front page at the time. The official explanation proffered was that it was just a weather balloon. But Mr Carroll extracted vivid eyewitness descriptions of these objects which pointed to something more strange – despite the media clampdown by defence department authorities and a “terrified” school principal. Teacher Andrew Greenwood described to Mr Carroll at the time that the saucer was playing “cat and mouse” with pursuing aircraft. Mr Carroll recalled: “The kids were excited – abuzz with excitement, not terrified. I could see what a big buzz it was for them.”

Sexual assault appeal
Safety hubs a vital piece of the puzzle By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS BIG changes are set to hit familyviolence hotspots such as Greater Dandenong as the result of a recently released state Royal Commission report, says a legal aid director. Nicole Rich, family, youth and children’s law executive director of Victoria Legal Aid, said Dandenong could expect a specialist family violence court and a one-stop safety hub that links victims to police, specialist help and crisis accommodation. The family violence Royal Commission’s 1900-page report noted that Dandenong Magistrates’ Court
finalised more than 3200 family violence intervention orders in a year the busiest court in the state. Ms Rich said the specialist court was a “very positive move”, well needed in the region, but would require upgrading the current magistrates’ court building. She said the crowded waiting area didn’t have room to screen victims from perpetrators. As well as upgrading security, there also needed to be separate rooms for witnesses to give video evidence to courts if necessary. VLA will also need more funding to help provide increased prior-
ity for early legal advice, Ms Rich said. Its Dandenong office provided 1163 family-violence related services to Greater Dandenong residents in 2014-15 - not including private duty-lawyer services. “Legal aid and community legal services are available but the officers are critically overwhelmed by demand.” Ms Rich said quality time was needed to work through the complexities of the case, whether there were family law, criminal law and child protection implications. Not to mention the community
POLICE have released an image of a man wanted over an alleged sexual assault in Springvale in late January. A woman was allegedly assaulted by a man passing in the opposite direction as she crossed Springvale Road near Springvale railway station on 24 January just before 7pm. The offender is believed to have caught a taxi from Lightwood Road to Clayton South. He is described as Pacific Islander in appearance, in his 30s with black, curly shoulder-length hair. He was wearing a grey zip-up hoodie, dark shorts and possibly a checked flannelette shirt. The man was barefoot at the time.
health, accommodation and support links that may need to be organised. “You can’t just meet for 15 minutes.” The Royal Commission noted VLA was only able to provide representation to 12 per cent of familyviolence respondents in Dandenong. The report also detailed a victim who was unable to secure stable crisis shelter in Dandenong because she had a job. Ms Rich said there was a great need for more safe crisis housing for victims, and behavioural change courses and drug-and-alcohol treatment for perpetrators.
Seeing an urgent need for more eye tests
Milk bar knife attack AN ATTENDANT at a Noble Park milk bar is lucky to be alive after he was stabbed multiple times by a knife-wielding attacker. The would-be customer entered the Buckley Street store about 5.10pm on Saturday 26 March and asked for a packet of cigarettes. The attendant turned around to get the cigarettes but when he turned back, he was confronted by the man who had come around the counter armed with a knife. Detective Sergeant Jason Owen said there was then a “violent struggle” in which the victim was stabbed a number of times to the upper and lower body. The attacker then stole cash from the till and fled. The victim suffered only “superficial” wounds and was treated at the scene.
By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE sad thing about preventable blindness is that so few of its victims see it coming. For many of Greater Dandenong’s at-risk residents, there are no early symptoms. The problems however can be detected early by eye examinations - which often can be claimed on a Medicare rebate. In 75 per cent of cases, early detection leads to prevention and effective treatment. A state eye-health initiative Vision 2020 is set to be rolled out in the council area where one in four adults have never had an eye test. Its culturally diverse communities are also often under-represented in screening. Greater Dandenong’s higherthan-average diabetes rate and significant Indigenous population also puts it in a higher risk category Health Minister Jill Hennessy said at the launch in Dandenong on Thursday 31 March that early prevention and protection were the “holy grail” of health outcomes. “To think we’re missing the vital opportunities available to us, that people are suffering the burden of vision loss and vision illness ... we can’t tolerate.” Vision 2020 initiative manager Dee Tumino said most people didn’t notice the signs of vision loss because it happened so slowly. It can be prevented by lifestyle change, such as controlling glucose levels, giving up smoking and wearing sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats, Ms Tumino said. According to Vision 2020, more than 200,000 Victorians over 40 will

Most at risk are those above 40, with relevant family history, who have diabetes, who are smokers and are of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.
Over the next three years, the Vision 2020 will spread the message in Greater Dandenong, train health professionals, aged care and community care workers and distribute eye health kits to pharmacists and GPs. It follows successful pilot projects elsewhere in the state between 2012 and 2015. Vision 2020 Australia chief exec-
Doveton Soccer Club
utive Jennifer Gersbeck said better identification and referral of at-risk people would help prevent avoidable blindness. “A better educated and informed health workforce can help achieve improved patient outcomes. “With our ageing population, eye health needs to be a health priority for all Victorians.”

Awards promote region's high achievers IN 1990, a small group of businessmen met to form a program that recognised, profiled and highlighted the success and achievements by local industry in a number of categories. They would honour 15 businesses each year and present the Premier Regional Business Award to one of the year’s nominees. A few years later, the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce took over the responsibility of co-ordinating the awards. They have since grown to become one of the most prestigious local business awards in the country. The aim of the Premier Regional Business Awards is to recognise and promote outstanding achievement in the region and over the years we have seen some of the most successful and highly-regarded companies from the Greater Dandenong area come through our awards program. Nominees are drawn in various categories and winners are announced and presented at a gala dinner each year.

VOICE
AMANDA CHECKEN GREATER DANDENONG CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EXECUTIVE OFFICER
This year we are honouring 25 years of the Premier Regional Business Awards. Throughout 2015 our breakfasts profiled past winners of the major awards and featured a retrospective look at where the businesses have come from since winning their award. The culmination of this year will be the gala dinner, to be held on Wednesday 13 April. Featuring 12 past major award winners, the night will look back at the past 25 years of the awards and will also feature a live voting system
to award a People’s Choice Award to the most significant winner from the past 25 years. While this year’s awards have been advertised as the final, the chamber recognises that a business recognition program is a vital function for both the chamber and the Greater Dandenong business community. The Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards will take the place of the Premier Regional Business Awards, with its first breakfast taking place in mid-May. Each breakfast will feature nominated businesses from the region and the breakfast program will culminate with a final award presentation at the end of 2016. Featured within these awards will be a special Retail Award, which will encompass elements of a public vote to nominate a favourite retailer. The chamber has worked closely with the now-closed Dandenong Retail Traders Association to merge its former retail award into a new one.
Once the public vote has closed, the favourite retailers will then become nominated businesses and will be profiled at one of the chamber breakfasts through the year. The vision of the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce is to promote regional growth through leadership, support programs, networking and civic involvement. Over the past 65 years the chamber has been an integral part of the business community in the Greater Dandenong area and has been privileged to represent businesses in one of the largest growth corridors in the country. The chamber offers the opportunity to meet other local business people in a region which is well-served by business groups that cover retail, manufacturing, financial, legal and commercial services. If you are interested in joining the chamber, call me on 9794 8881 or email info@greaterdandenongchamber.com.au.

LOOKING BACK The Journal 4 April 2016 100 years ago 6 April 1916 Red Cross Workers at Variance Dandenong Shire Councillors take a hand in the dispute. It appears that those engaged upon the highly commendable work connected with the Dandenong Red Cross Society have for some time past been anything but a “happy family”. Matters came to a climax, however, some days ago, owing to certain action taken by the President of the Shire (Cr Pearson) and in consequence, the shire council was appealed to by the hon secretary (Miss Hayman) and a deputation which waited upon the Municipal body on Thursday afternoon. Miss Hayman wrote as follows, applying for the use of a room in the Shire Hall for the purpose of the work of the local branch of the society. They have for some time been occupying the President’s room but now he has revoked
his permission to use the room, and they had been forced temporarily to get a room in Lonsdale Street. The President said Miss Hayman had sent a letter to Mrs Pearson asking her to resign as vice-president, which was a deliberate insult. He had no objection to them using the room, but they were not going to put his wife out of it. 50 years 5 April 1966 Letters to the Editor Sir - Reference your paper’s report of the march of many senior students of Dandenong High School held on Friday March 25 in the streets of Dandenong. STRETCHED to live within their $150 million annual budget, Greater Dandenong councillors have been bickering over giving an extra $100 to an elderly citizens club’s Mother’s Day lunch. And while they also knocked back $30 extra for a fund-raising sausage sizzle, they agreed to spend $460 on a judge for a record attempt at the hokey pokey. At their meeting on 29 March, councillors voted down the extra funds for Italian Elderly Citizens Club Noble Park’s free three-course lunch for up to 80 members. The group had asked for $440 and received $340 under the council’s community response grants program. President Rita Giaquinta said the club volunteers would make cuts “elsewhere” to stage the $2000 lunch. “It means a lot. It’s something they look forward to." In the same motion, the council refused to splurge an extra $30 for fund-raising sausages for Cyrene Centre, a free alcohol and drug counselling service. The centre had applied for $550 to help it raise at least $1000 towards its rent and utility costs. The council granted it $320. Councillor Maria Sampey had pushed for the extra funding after a successful applicant withdrew their submission, freeing up $150. She took issue with how “sport seemed to take priority

At the meeting, the council shared $7070 among 13 applicants at the meeting, including $460 for an adjudicator at a school’s Australian record attempt at dancing the hokey pokey. There was also up to $750 each for individual sportspeople. “This (elderly citizens) group barely survived last year,” Cr Sampey said. “What I’d like to know is what criteria is relied upon to assess various applicants. There seems to be such a large difference between some getting a large amount and some getting a pittance. Cr Sean O’Reilly said the grants process shouldn’t be beholden to “Cr Sampey’s magic wand”, and ratepayers’ money wasn’t a “magic pudding”. Cr Sampey interjected: “It’s 100 bucks!”

Cr O’Reilly said the council had a set process and shouldn’t hand funds out like “Monopoly money”. In opposing the motion, Cr Matthew Kirwan said he believed councillors shouldn’t interfere in the officers’ grants decisions. He said the council should re-look at the grants criteria once a year, which he believed should favour groups like Cyrene and the senior citizens rather than individuals. Cr Roz Blades said awarding the extra funds was a “common sense” solution. “It’s about assisting people in the community who are volunteers. These policies aren’t inviolate. They’re moveable feasts. There comes a time when common sense has to prevail and this is such a time. “If we can’t find the money ... then we’ve gone too far.”

UFO mystery 50 years on From page 1 Is there anything out there? Oakleigh firefighter John Williams was among the first responders to reports of a UFO in the Westall area 50 years ago. 152258 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
The story endures, marked by a flying saucer playground in Grange Reserve, which is where the object landed and was then a paddock called The Grange, and more than 100 eyewitness accounts collected by Canberra-based researcher Shane Ryan. He says the ongoing conspiracy such as the unexplained presence of Department of Defence officers at the scene helps keep the story alive.
Des Carroll, who broke the Westall UFO story in the Dandenong Journal 50 years ago. 152319
“We know there was some sort of air force involvement. There was no paper trail to tell us why they were there and what they were doing. “If a solution came forward we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” After 11 years of collating eyewitness reports, Mr Ryan feels he is piecing together the jigsaw. “It’s gradually putting a degree of pressure on who may be holding the keys to the mystery. “Maybe the keys are in another country, maybe no one around has the keys or no one ever had the keys – the box was empty.
“My hope is it will put more pressure on those people, if they exist.” The story still captures national media – a spread in Woman’s Day, a feature on The Project and a Studio Ten feature this week to coincide with the 50th anniversary. In January after a TV segment, Mr Ryan heard from witnesses who hadn’t contacted him before. One of them was Oakleigh firefighter John Williams who was among the first responders to the high school. He is shy of the event’s controversy but vividly remembers the day. Expecting to find a fire, Mr Williams and crew-mate ‘Mopey’ drove to where a group of excited kids were milling around at the high school. They were pointed to where UFOs had landed. An older man and his wife standing on the corner of Westall and Fairbank roads directed the fireys to The Grange’s orchards. “We didn’t find a fire. We found

an area of grass that’s flattened, about twice the size of your lounge room.” Deep down, the two firefighters knew they’d found “something” even though their colleagues dismissed the event. “We tried to keep an open mind. We haven’t got an answer for it but we thought something has happened here. “All of these people can’t be wrong.”

Teen thieves By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AND CASEY NEILL EARLY teens and tweens are leading a spike in thefts and burglaries in Greater Dandenong in 2015. Greater Dandenong Inspector Bruce Kitchen partly attributed the 18 per cent rise in offences by 10-19 year olds to the youthful car-thieving Apex Gang. “But it is not necessarily all to do with that particular young group,” Insp Kitchen said. He said the gang’s spate of home break-ins to steal car keys and cars drove a 100 per cent rise in aggravated burglaries in the region last year. “The real concern is if the home-owner goes downstairs to get a drink of water and is confronted by (burglars), then anything can happen.” According to the latest Crime Statistics Agency figures, offences committed by 10-14 year olds jumped from 101 to 167 in Greater Dandenong last year - a 66 per cent rise. In this age bracket, burglaries tripled from 5 to 17 and thefts doubled from 30 to 60. Insp Kitchen said the thefts comprised mainly motor vehicles, their number plates or items from cars, such as tools from tradies' utes. Such thefts were fuelled by the “ice epidemic” and more “kids” wandering at night, he said. Among 15-19 year olds, nearly 1000 offences were committed in 2015 - a 13 per cent rise from 2014 levels. Again thefts and burglaries rose sharply in this older teen group - up 56 per cent and 250 per cent respectively. Weapons and explosives offences were up
from 33 to 40, though assaults were down from 179 to 145. Overall there were 19,498 offences recorded in Greater Dandenong, up from 16,104. This was the state’s fifth highest offence rate and the 21 per cent increase was well above the 8.1 per cent figure for Victoria. Insp Kitchen said there were a rise in commercial burglaries - from factories and shops - as well as an overall 60 per cent rise in thefts from cars, and thefts of cars up 37 per cent. Insp Kitchen said thefts of two matching number plates accounted for 40 per cent of thefts of vehicles in Greater Dandenong. He encouraged motorists to secure their plates with one-way screws. Insp Kitchen said many thefts from cars were opportunistic and occurred because valuables were in plain sight. He urged people to park their car under a street light or in a driveway, lock their car and take valuables inside. “They’re predominantly in residential areas. They’re not in community locations such as railway stations or shopping centre car parks,” he said. The number of drug cultivating and manufacturing crimes jumped from 41 to 81 - 97 per cent. “That’s just a continual problem in relation to crop houses and in relation to ice,” Insp Kitchen said. “Crop houses are utilised to finance the higher-end drugs. “We concentrate on disruption activities in relation to crop houses. “Ice remains a problem for us.”

A MAN allegedly caught speeding 88 kilometres over the limit in Dandenong South last week claimed he was just taking the luxury car for a test drive. The Mercedes A250 was detected travelling at 188 km/h on the Monash Freeway just before 9pm on Monday 28 March. After police intercepted the car as it left the freeway in Dandenong South, the 36-year-old driver, from Bayside, claimed he was taking it
for a test drive. The man will be charged on summons with speed dangerous, careless driving and speeding. It’s understood the owner of the car was in the passenger seat at the time. The car will be impounded for a month. The intercept was part of Operation Nexus, which saw police specifically target dangerous driving over the Easter weekend.

Man throws knife By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN threw a knife and swung a crowbar out of anger at finding another male at his ex-girlfriend’s Keysborough house. Silvio Marchi, 30, yelled: “Why is that dog in this house?” before flinging the kitchen knife about 6pm on 30 January, a court was told. The knife narrowly missed the other male, police prosecutor Senior Constable Kimberly Hawkins told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 March. Marchi then allegedly grabbed a crowbar from his toolbox and unsuccessfully tried to strike the other man.
The accused fled from police by jumping a fence, and was unable to be found despite the use of the police Dog Squad. Marchi was arrested at an auto parts store in Clayton South on 18 March with a $300 heads-up display down his pants. His car parked outside had number plates stolen from a vehicle in Mulgrave three days earlier. Police seized cannabis, an ecstasy pill, Viagra tablets, deal bags, scales and an ice pipe from inside the car. Marchi also faced charges after fleeing police during an oral drug test at a breath-testing station in Springvale in September 2013.
During his escape, Marchi’s front tyres spun as he accelerated heavily, leaving two deep furrows in the roadside grass, the court was told. At the time, his licence was suspended. A warrant had since been issued for his arrest. Defence lawyer Effie Lagos told the court Marchi may not have been facing court, particularly over the driving matters, if he was granted parole when released from jail in 2013. The accused had acquired a brain injury from a car crash in 2013, and used ice for more than a decade, she said.
Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted many released jailees would be less likely to offend if they had parole support. He sentenced Marchi to an 18-month supervised community-based order, given the accused hadn’t received such an order since 2008. The order included drug and mental health treatment conditions. Marchi was also jailed for five days - a term already served in custody, and disqualified from driving for six months. He was placed on full intervention orders banning him from contacting the expartner and the male victim.
Police out in force to tackle knife-wielding man A MENTALLY ill man who threatened shoppers with a knife at the Dandenong Market will not face charges. The 31-year-old man locked himself in a fire hydrant cupboard off Cleeland Street in Dandenong, about 1pm on Sunday 27 March. Special Operations Group (SOG) police used shields for protection and tied a rope around the cupboard door handle to pull it open, before spraying the man with capsicum spray as he hid inside. Dramatic images of the siege showed a large heavily armed police presence and Easter shoppers being evacuated from the area. The man was reported to have been trying to shut the door while covering his burning eyes and was tackled to the ground outside the cupboard about 1.55pm. Reports said the man was on his way to get psychiatric care at hospital when he jumped from a car and started the hour-long siege. The man was taken to The Alfred hospital for assessment after the incident.

Volunteers recognised as greater VOLUNTEERS who put the ‘great’ in Greater Dandenong will be honoured at a special breakfast. The Greater Dandenong Volunteer Resource Service (GDVRS) will host a volunteer recognition breakfast during National Volunteer Week, which runs from 9 to 15 May. The event will recognise the important roles volunteers perform for community organisations. South East Volunteers outreach manager Melissa Mahoney said these groups were each invited to nominate a maximum of two volunteers to attend. “This is an opportunity to recognise volunteers who contribute to the culture, vibrancy and health and wellbeing of the City of Greater Dandenong,” she said. GDVRS is in its second year of operation and has helped more than 500 people volunteer their time with Wesley Mission, Carers of Africa, Monash Community Health, Interfaith Network and more. It’s a joint initiative between South East Volunteers and the City of Greater Dandenong to help organisations find the right volunteer. Call South East Volunteers on 9562 0414 for more information.

WHICH local politician went strolling in parkland only to come across an apparently abandoned drug stash? About five kilos of cannabis in a calico bag was found tucked under a tree in a popular Dandenong park. The pollie tells us they did the responsible thing and deposited every bud, leaf and stem at the local police station. After a degree of interrogation from the police, the pollie declared their innocence and then supposed that nine out of 10 people would have probably thrown the stash in the rubbish. The police officer flatly replied that nine out of 10 would have kept it for smoking. DANDENONG Journal is set to be in the national TV spotlight in coming days. Channel 10’s The Project visited the Journal offices to peruse archive stories and interview a reporter on the Westall Primary School UFO mystery, which celebrates its 50th anniversary on 6 April. We’re told The Project will screen its story on 5 April, and stablemate Studio 10 will also mark the event the following day. HARMONY Day took on extra meaning at Keysborough’s Mt Hira College. On Friday 18 March, the school marked the day with an assembly and announced that it would donate $5000 pledge for the Royal Children’s Hospital
NOBLE Park footballers will swap the Sherrins for golf clubs to support their mate during his cancer battle. Funds raised at Club Noble’s annual charity golf day at Keysborough Golf Club on Thursday 7 April will go to Chris ‘Rabbit’ Heenan and his young family. His former team-mates and Club Noble last year rallied to raise $30,000 for the Heenans, following Chris’s diagnosis with stage four prostate cancer. “Rabbit was a very popular player at the club and has two young daughters to care for,” golf day convenor Grant Connolly said. “It is only fitting that we support him and his young family in his time of need. “Rabbit’s condition has really hit home and highlights the importance for men of all ages to have regular checks and not ignore early warning signs.” Mr Connolly said the golf day was open to anyone who wanted to take a stand on men’s health, and was a great way to mix sport with support. Call Club Noble on 9546 0653 or register at the club in Moodemere Street, Noble Park, to get involved. Good Friday Appeal. “Our college has been collecting for the past few weeks and on Good Friday we will be taking a few students down to Etihad Stadium to present the cheque on live television,” principal Sareh Salarzadeh said.

By CASEY NEILL CHRISTMAS raffle proceeds have bought a new leg for a boy in Rwanda. The Dandenong Letters Centre team collected more than US$1000 for Sedrick, age 8, through the festive fund-raiser. Logistics team member Ravinder Bhal’s daughter Saira, 25, spent a month volunteering in Kigali, Rwanda, through her university. Sedrick had recently moved into education and rehabilitation centre Les Enfants de Dieu (EDD) when Saira met him, having previously lived and begged on the city’s streets. He was born with a deformed leg that was amputated when he was younger and was using crutches to get around. “He wasn’t really interacting with the other children,” Ravinder said. “The kids left him alone because he wasn’t fast enough.
“When she came back she said ‘what can we do for Sedrick?’” So the 1200-strong team at Australia Post’s Dandenong Letters Centre lent a hand for a prosthetic leg. “We started fund-raising in November last year. He got his leg in early January,” Ravinder said. “Apparently he’s running around. “It’s going to last him a couple of years, which is good.” She said EDD had many other projects that the centre was looking to support. “The boys don’t have writing materials,” she said. “The postal structure’s really bad so it might be an opportunity for us.”

CHILDHOOD memories can be painful. Just ask Health Minister Jill Hennessy who revealed at a public event on 31 March that she’d endured tearful visits to Dandenong Market. And the source of her misery? She was begging to visit the doughnut truck which, of course, would cover most of the healthy food groups, one would think.

Residents may miss out By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS ANTI-SKY rail residents in Douglas Street, Noble Park, don’t know if the State Government’s voluntary purchase scheme will apply to their properties. The 50 members of the newly-formed Mile Creek Residents Group recently signed petitions for the sky rail route to be diverted further from their houses. Leader Eric D’Cruz says he has not received an offer from the Level Crossing Removal Authority for the purchase of his property. “It depends on whether they divert the line. If things don’t look good, we might take up the offer.” However, it’s unclear if Mr D’Cruz and his neighbours are eligible for the voluntary purchase scheme. The scheme applies to residential properties that back onto the rail corridor or will be significantly overshadowed by the rail bridge. Mr D’Cruz’s property will be about 15 metres from the new proposed rail route but separated by Douglas Road. The sky rail eliminates the Corrigan, Chandler and Heatherton road level crossings in Noble Park by elevating the tracks up to 10 metres high. Under the purchase scheme, the government has also offered to pay for tree plantings and raised fence lines to reduce the sky rail’s visual impact. It has also proposed paying for fence gates to allow residents to access the new community spaces under the bridges. Legal, valuation and moving expenses, including stamp duty, will also be covered. Mr D’Cruz said the planned route brought the tracks closer to homes between 83 Douglas Street and the Chandler Road level crossing. Every household in that section had signed the group’s petition, he said. In their petition, Mile Creek residents propose that the line be shifted north of Mile Creek into unoccupied reserve land. “There’s no impediment to anybody. There is not one house over there,” Mr D’Cruz said.
Unmoved over sky-high poll numbers A SURVEY showing huge local support for the south-east sky rail proposal has been greeted with scepticism by Noble Park residents living near the project. The EY Sweeney survey, commissioned by the State Government, quizzed more than 2600 residents who lived within three kilometres of the rail corridor between Caulfield and Dandenong. The raised-rail project, which eliminates nine level crossings - including three in Noble Park - found 82 per cent residential support. Among 711 Greater Dandenong residents, there was even higher approval - 87 per cent. That latter sample included 115 door-knocked residents, who lived up to three kilometres from Noble Park’s three level crossings to be eliminated. The catchment area was designed to “capture the views of the broader community”, according to EY Sweeney. Some households in Cranbourne
An artist's impression of the sky rail near Heatherton Road. and Pakenham were also included in the survey. Mile Creek Residents Group spokesman Eric D’Cruz said the “academic” findings didn’t reflect the high dissatisfaction in Douglas Street, Noble Park. He said 50 of the street’s households west of Chandler Road were
He said there were access roads for construction equipment into the reserve from Mons Parade and Chandler Road, and only a “few” more native trees, including river red gums, on that side of the creek. Chris Papapavlou, who lives metres from the Corrigan Road level crossing, said a Level Crossing Removal Authority consultant had indicated last week he may sell his property to the government. The consultant was unable to tell an unimpressed Mr Papapavlou how much he would be paid. “Buying your property isn’t compensation,” he said.
unanimously against the sky rail project due to noise, its perceived ugliness and the train tracks being moved closer to homes. “All the people in our road have signed a petition (against the sky rail’s proposed route). “It’s a totally different opinion if you’re living next to it.”
Mr Papapavlou was not placated by an offer of screening to stop rail commuters peering into his yard, or to instigate a “crime prevention program” for the new spaces under the bridges. “I find a bridge there ugly. You can’t push that on people. “If anyone can see into my yard, I told them I will press charges. I am not a zoo animal or exhibit.” Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the scheme was delivering what local residents wanted. “We are respecting the views of those closest to this significant project, and giving them the
Plan gets experts’ thumbs up URBAN rail design experts, who are in favour of sky rail “so long as it’s done well”, will speak in Noble Park on 5 April. The meeting will host academics Dr John Stone, of University of Melbourne, and Ian Woodcock, of RMIT, to speak on the controversial sky rail concept that will eliminate Noble Park’s three level crossings. The meeting will be chaired by councillor Roz Blades. It will feature a group workshop and call for nominations for a sky rail community delegation. The meeting is at the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre, 18-34 Buckley Street, Noble Park, at 6.30pm.
opportunity to make the choice that is right for them.” Opposition Planning spokesman David Davis said the “panicked and rushed” announcement showed the government had been lying about the project’s impact. “Surely this compensation would be better spent instead in doing what residents actually want; for this ugly and intrusive sky rail proposal to be abandoned and instead remove level crossings by putting rail under road.” Residents have until 30 June next year to apply for the scheme.

Centre plan stacks up By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DOUBLE-storey child care centre for up to 111 children has been approved on the corner of Stud Road and Ann Street, Dandenong, despite objectors’ traffic concerns. Greater Dandenong councillors approved the proposal on 29 March, arguing the centre on the corner of a residential area would help relieve a child care shortage.
Councillor Sean O’Reilly said it was a matter of balancing the great community need against residents’ inconvenience. He said young children were waiting up to 18 months to land a child care spot. Any extra traffic would be spread out between 6am and 7pm, rather than just the traditional school drop-off and pick-up periods. There was no better spot for a child care centre than on a major arterial such as Stud Road, he said.
In support of objecting residents, Cr Angela Long said vehicle access to the centre was on Ann Street, not Stud Road. She noted in particular an Ann Street median strip blocked access to the centre’s 29-space car park. “The residents of Ann Street should be able to have a peaceful street that’s not congested during (peak pick up times).” Cr Long also said she’d hate to do the 480-metre walk from Dandenong’s CBD
with a pram and children in tow. Cr Matthew Kirwan said Stud Road already caused traffic issues at the Ann Street intersection. “We support more child care places. That’s not a reason to fix one problem by creating another.” A council report noted the development was compliant with the planning scheme, and would not adversly effect the traffic network, parking nor local amenity.
Good brekkie start for success FEEDING success is as simple as serving up breakfast. Dandenong Salvation Army and St Mary’s Primary School in Dandenong are calling for volunteers to join a new school breakfast program from next term. Dandenong corps officer Captain Stuart McGifford said one in seven kids started the school day without a proper breakfast. “That’s far too many and, as most people know, kids do better on a full stomach,” he said.
“A healthy breakfast is simply the best way to start the day.” Captain McGifford said that Foodbank Victoria had found breakfast clubs improved academic achievement, classroom behaviour and truancy rates. He said the St Mary’s program would be a community space where kids were valued and encouraged as their school day started. Call the school a call on 9791 7650 and leave your name with reception to get involved. Opinions about hub go online THE City of Greater Dandenong is calling on residents to take part in community feedback sessions on the new Springvale Library and Community Hub. Mayor Heang Tak said the architects want to enter a design competition for the project but the council wants to make sure the details are in line with what the community expect from the hub. “We want this site to be accessible and welcoming to the whole community and we want the community to share their ideas and expectations with us,” Cr Tak said. “We want to hear from as many people as possible as this will be a facility for the whole community.” Community feedback sessions will be held on Saturday 2 April at Springvale Library from 11.30am-2.30pm, on Thursday 7 April at the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre, 18-34 Buckley Street, Noble Park, from 11.30am-2.30pm and on Friday 8 April at Parkmore Customer Service Shop, Keysborough, from 11.30am-5pm. CHARITY HOME AUCTION FOR ROYAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Good Friday turned great when Villawood Properties teamed up with Henley Properties yet again to auction a home at its Trillium community in Mickleham, with all proceeds going to the Royal Children’s Hospital as part of the Good Friday Appeal. It was another fantastic day with a large crowd turning out for an exciting auction which saw the beautiful Henley home eventually sold to the Elsikmani family for $663,000. They were ecstatic to have purchased such a great home for their growing family
and even more pleased that the purchase would help support the great work undertaken at the hospital. It brings to approximately $4.4 million the amount raised for the hospital through this initiative since Villawood Properties became involved seven years ago. This magnificent community event is Villawood’s largest single philanthropic initiative and the fact that it supports such a worthy cause which resonates with so many staff makes it even more special. The video of the auction is at https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-dDdw7D1Ek

Stingrays are happy bunnies By JARROD POTTER YOUTH GIRLS ACADEMY CHALLENGE REVIEW GRAND FINAL THE spoils of summertime success went to the Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls in an Easter Monday grand final that had it all. Dandenong went into the final Youth Girls Challenge clash of 2016 well-placed but slight underdogs against the undefeated Sandringham Dragons. It took everything they had just to make the grand final after the Stingrays dug deep to take a come-from-behind semifinal triumph over Calder. But in the grand final the tables were turned. From the first bounce Dandenong surged in front and held on all day to bring the first football flag back to Shepley Oval since the old Dandy Redlegs days. Led from the front by a fullground performance off skipper Georgia Walker, who starred through the centre before shifting to centre-half-back for the final term to man the dangerous Dragons’ forwards, Dandenong had stellar contributions across the lines. Three quick Stingrays goals in the first term left the Dragons chasing all day as Tyla Hanks, Imani Francis and Brooke Struylaart sunk the slipper into a few choice majors. Forward pressure proved critical. Dandenong’s tackling across the board left the Dragons unable to escape their defensive end. Hanks, Jas Grierson, and many others rode the Dragons into the ground time and time again. Kayla Ripari, Georgia Gee and Teagan Sheldon went in
hard at every ball while Emily Browning, Suede Croad and Jess Provan provided huge runand-carry across the flanks and beyond. But it would be hard to single out any Stingray who didn’t do her job when called upon as Dandenong had answers for everything Sandringham threw down. Dandenong set up the victory in the first half - booting most of its score with the firstterm wind. The Rays went into the half with a 22-point lead and didn’t kick a goal afterwards, by then the damage was done. Sandringham toiled to keep the game moving, but couldn’t close the gap in the blustery, cold conditions at Frankston Park. Despite the topsy-turvy final half, as the Dragons put in for one last gutsy effort, the Stingrays emerged with a 4.8 (32) to 1.1 (7) winning score line to capture the first Challenge premiership. For Sandringham, Katherine Smith and Isabel Huntington were beyond exceptional and left it all out on the park in heartbreaking but extremely commendable performances. Above all everyone left the ground smiling as the first thing both sides did was to shake hands, or more relevantly share hugs of joy and dismay equally. After that, in a show of great spirit, they took a combined sides photo to cap off the remarkably successful inaugural Challenge competition. Dandenong coach Scott Gowans was amazed by the side’s adherence to its plans and structures and to keep the ball moving even when up against
Panthers are in the swing for a sensational victory VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - MEN’S PREMIER 4TH XI GRAND FINAL REVIEW DANDENONG’S fourth XI brought the premiership back to Shepley Oval in a sensational show of depth that proved too powerful for Carlton. The future of Dandenong (3/179) cricket shone last weekend as the young Panthers emphatically brushed aside Carlton (87) at Casey Fields in the fourth XI finale. Dandy’s fourth line-up had a full contingent to pick from this year as schoolboys filled the coffers with premium players all the way through the four sides. Luke McMaster (3/15) was sensational early on Saturday to skittle Carlton’s top order, while Jye Driscoll (3/12) and Niresh Drukeshkumar (2/26) picked up scalps with the new ball too. With 26 overs left on the first day, Austin Heldt (55) and Andrey Fernando (38) batted exceptionally to guide the Panthers across the line with a few overs left in the day, but
the twin challenges of the Frankston sea-side gale and the Dragons. But, most of all, giving the Stingrays a premiership to put on the mantelpiece was the best part of all. “I think the ability to rotate the ball, hold possession when we needed to and move out wide and bring the ball into the forward line was a feature and they listed and implemented it,” Gowans said. “To be the first side to win a premiership at the Stingrays means a lot and it means even more because the girls lost last year, came back and regrouped to win it this year.” Walker’s performance earned her the player of the match award as she signed off her Stingrays Youth Girls’ journey in the best way possible. “It’s pretty awesome - especially for the girls as the boys haven’t won a grand final yet, to be the first Youth Girls and first team at Dandy to win a grand final is pretty special,” Walker said. “Basically, I was told to stick on this player and beat her in every contest as she’d been smashing us in the third quarter and just to do my job and stay in front and I guess I did that.” It is the first premiership won by a Stingrays side as Dandenong celebrates its 25th season in the TAC Cup. their fall left a slight glimmer of hope for Carlton which insisted on going to the second day. It was to no avail, though, when the Panthers’ middleorder men Dane Heverin (41) and Josh Allen (24no) batted Carlton out of the match leaving the Dandy boys to celebrate the flag. “We were pretty lucky with the kind of guys we could get on the park - had a couple of guys who came from school cricket this year,” Dandenong fourths skipper Jordan Mackenzie said. “We had four seamers who were too good for fourth XI cricket, to be honest, and that showed on the weekend. “Batting wise, a similar story. We had 12 players between 15 and 23 and probably all 12 are far better than fourth XI cricket, so it’s a good position for the club to be in.” Mackenzie praised the side’s all-round efforts, especially the first up spell from McMaster first XI bowler Adam McMaster’s younger brother - and the work of Driscoll, Heldt and Fernando.
“Heldt and Fernando are 16 and 17 years old - they’re bursting with talent and are products of Owen Mottau - our batting coach - so he’s pretty proud of them,” Mackenzie said. “You can tell with the way they bat that they’re pretty tidy players.” It put a great footnote on Dandenong’s up and down season across the grades and especially leaves plenty in the tank for the side’s 2016/17 Victorian Premier Cricket campaign. “It’s exciting that we could get the job done and show guys at the club - especially with a new coach coming in,” Mackenzie said. “That we’ve got these guys who can step up on the big stage and also have a truckload of talent.” DANDENONG 4TH XI PREMIERS: Jordan Mackenzie (capt), Austin Heldt, Andrey Fernando, Dane Heverin, Josh Allen, Zachary Harrison, Jordan Wilkinson, Jye Driscoll, Niresh Drukeshkumar, Luke McMaster, Darcy Merlo, Archit Vora, Luke Gandy. - JARROD POTTER

Season fighters and flops By JARROD POTTER DANDENONG JOURNAL FOOTBALL PREVIEW KNOCKING on the door already is the return of south eastern football. With the Eastern, VAFA and Southern Football Leagues kicking off on 9 April, it’s time to look over the lists and figure out who will shine and which teams are sadly set to fade in the 2016 premiership race. EFL - DIVISION 1 NOBLE PARK COACH: Mick Fogarty INS: Mitch Gent, Will Petropolous, Sean Corrigan (Casey), Taylor Joyce, Tyson Mitchem (Beaconsfield), Adam Giobbi, Ben Giobbi, Ryan Morrison (Narre Warren), Jackson McDonald, Josh Docherty. OUT: Shane Valenti, Trent Cody, Josh Ferguson, Daniel Galante, Chris Horton-Milne, Marc Johnston, Daniel Keely, Jake Wilson, Jarryd Plymin, Luke Mann. COMMENTS: The ins certainly outweigh the outs. Mick Fogarty has loaded up the midfield with three from the VFL, including former Noble Park junior Will Petropoulos as well as up-andcomer Mitch Gent and a swathe of SEFNL pickups. Former club best and fairest Tyson Mitchem returns while the Giobbi brothers will add a lot to the wings and flanks. Add former Stingrays Taylor Joyce and Ryan Morrison at either end to give this side a ton of potential. Shane Valenti’s absence will be hard to fill - as proven in last year’s finals series - while Trent Cody is a big loss for the club’s midfield future. Nonetheless, Fogarty still has plenty to choose in pursuit of another EFL flag. VAFA - DIVISION 2 AND 4 ST JOHN’S COACH: Ben McGee INS: Patrick Carr-Lehne, Guy Chuol, Brad Curry, Daniel Egan, Nathan Eres, Nicholas Silvey, Steven Sullivan, Daniel Vine, Damien Wilsnach,

Will Keysborough stay near the peaks of SFL Division 2 in its second SFL season? 137499 Picture: JARROD POTTER Matthew Bennett. OUT: Aaron Abela, Emmanuel Jakwot, Carson Strobel. COMMENTS: Expect excitement out of Carroll Reserve this year with Ben Mcgee getting his fill of a promising list. After a swift finals exit in 2015, the JOCs are set to be lightning-fast. Matthew Bennett from VAFA Premier C is a nice addition to counter the loss of Carson Strobel for St John’s interior forces. Aaron Abela (Endeavour Hills) is going to coach at the SFL Division 3 side while Manny Jakwot, St John’s best home-grown product, is trying his hand at VFL for Casey. MASALA Coach: Brett Robinson INS: Nicholas Cunningham, Anthony Dorrington, Brandon Kelly, Anthony Maritno, David Matthews, Maurice Mills-Rolfe, Tim Moss, Jesse Yarde. OUTS: Ben Field. COMMENTS: Tough to see the Tigers moving up the ranks, but their involvement remains a crucial part of the Dandneong football community for their work in integration and community outreach. Ben Nugent will lead from the front again while Sam Freeman, Wayne McMahon, David Cvkevenac are part of the leadership group alongside Furkan Erkal, Declan Lee, Josh Kyle and Matthew Decarne. SFL - DIVISION 2 AND 3 KEYSBOROUGH COACH: Ryan Goodes INS: Dylan Carlsson, Jake Buenaventura, Shane Cudby, Shaun Haffenden, Darren Jameson, Kristopher Jameson, Clinton King, Brandon Mather, Damon Mccormack, Kasey Mobourne, Nicholas Spryidon, Steven Watson. OUTS: Travis Hyland, Mark Quiambao, Gerard Smith, Kiat Tut. COMMENTS: Injury cruelled Keysy’s hopes last year with Tyson King and Corey Wilkinson lost to knee injuries. After a straight sets exit last
year, the Burra has loaded up with a lot of new faces and not too many departing the nest. Steve Watson is a premiership ruckman with Narre Warren and is a big addition to the tall department and keep an eye out for promising youngster Kasey Mobourne who made the Flying Boomerangs squad in recent years. Although the loss of coach Ryan Goodes to a long-term suspension, which is being appealed currently, will be difficult to fill until his return. SPRINGVALE DISTRICTS COACH: Danny Rout INS: Jack Allender, Richard Costantino, Josh Dart, Cameron Foley, Justin Lim, Marcus Scuotto, Matthew Soutter-Smith, Allan Taing, Todd Wills, Louis Greco, Ryan Oliver, Sam Blackburn OUT: Tyson Bramble, Luke Dovaston, Brett Dunne, Lachlan Dunne, Jamie Fox, James Gough, Shelton Rosario, Daniel Wilson, Clain Whitlock-Shoppe. COMMENTS: Changes aplenty out of Edinburgh Park as the Demons have pretty much wiped the slate. New coach Danny Rout has lost mountainous full forward James Gough, after only one year at the club, while Ben Laier and VFL prospect Shelton Rosario are also on the way out. Keep an eye out for Jack Allender, out of Noble Park/Bonbeach, Louis Greco, and big Sam Blackburn - who knows his way around a premiership flag and a best and fairest from his time at Rowville. LYNDALE COACH: Brad Bruni INS: Brad Carroll, Steven Comino, Justin Doust, Troy Jordan, Trevor Kumetaitis, Ben Laier, Jayden Malek, Daniel Senior, Matthew Stuart, Daniel Wilson. OUT: Daniel Howard, Ben Mayers, Anthony Besim, Kenneth Smart, Damien Wilsnach, Zachary Guille, COMMENTS: Renewal and reinvigoration are on the cards for the Pumas, with new coach Brad Bruni finding a huge ins-list for his debut season
Taylor Joyce is one of Noble Park's big ins for 2016. 138376 at Barry Powell Reserve. Springvale Districts evergreen defender Justin Doust is one of the big pick-ups for the Pumas while big forward Trevor Kumetaitis is set to return home from Heatherton, to the place he booted 56 and 59 goals in his last two Pumas’ seasons. Doveton’s Taylor Rainey another hard-edged addition to the centre. Will they return to the days of 14 with a preliminary final? Still to be debated, but the side is much stronger than last season at the very least and should guide the Dales back up the ladder. DANDENONG COACH: Glenn Jose INS: Mitchell Clark, Adam Fiander, Nicholas Long, David Westwood, Robert Witt. OUT: Aaron Chandler, James Alexander, Kaine Bundy, Leigh Caldwell, Joshua Furborough, Jamie Gaspero, Neil Harper, Jake Hill-Buxton, Nathan Osler, Jake Ward, Kevin Stott. COMMENTS: There’s quite the mixed bag out of Dandenong’s ins and outs. New Lyndhurst coach Paddy Cooke has enticed a fair few across from the Redlegs, but the Dandenong side still seems resilient. Difficult to see them going the distance but at least should land a couple of surprise blows this time around. SANDOWN COBRAS COACH: Rick Bean INS: Michael Fitzpatrick, Douglas Slater, Jarrad Denham, Nick Maizey, Dane Maizey, Mark Perry, Michael Perry, Michael Sutton. OUT: Anthony La Rocca, Luke Newton, Glen Burns, Matthew Singleton, Mitchell Uaongo, Dennis Hill, Christian Tzilantonis. COMMENTS: Big outs at Sandown have left a gaping hole in the midfield. The former skipper Luke Newton and tall timber Mitchell Uaongo’s departure leaves solid holes in the Cobras’ midfield. Hard to tell where the Cobras will land. Nick and Dane Maizey have come across from Highett looking for greater opportunity while Michael Fitzpatrick arrives from the Omeo District and the Perry pair come from Lang Lang.

City paves over Red Devils By JARROD POTTER NPL VICTORIA 2 EAST - ROUND 6 DANDENONG City broke open its clash against Ballarat Red Devils after persistent pressure started to pay off in the second half. It was level pegging entering the final halfhour as Dandenong City and Ballarat shared the early goals through Chris Antoniadis (39’, 91’) and Nelson Salvatore (60’). But Shaun Filopovic opened the game up in the 69th minute, taking on the defence and forcing a last-ditch attempt on the City midfielder from Ballarat Red Devils keeper Aaron Romein. The error sent Romein from the field with a red card and left Dario Matkovic (69’) to comfortably slot the penalty past junior keeper Ryan Schorback. City peppered the goals throughout the last 25 minutes against 10 men as Antoniadis added a second to his account after a couple of near misses while Ash Cattermole (78’) savoured a slice of the scoring as well to finish the rout 4-1. Against 10 and a young keeper the margin should’ve been more though; the skipper John Carroll had a header cleared off the line and Anthony Cassar’s simple shot at the far post dribbled out of bounds among a few other attempts that could have seen the margin skyrocket. With head coach Aaron Healey on holiday, stand-in coach Gerry McDonagh was pleased to see his charges take on the best that Ballarat could muster. “We knew Ballarat would come at us, and potentially cause some problems with the pace they had out wide and the pace they had throughout the midfield,” McDonagh said. “The drive by Shaun to get forward and recognise that ball was getting back to the keeper and actually get a touch to it and force the keeper into making an error. “We were able to play against 10 men - which is always nice when you’re ahead as it gives you an opportunity to knock the ball around in play and open them up.” McDonagh believed the earlier misses, when it was 11-on-11, coudl have been costly as City failed to push ahead despite a lot of chances. “We probably kept ourselves under pressure
for Souths - as did Hampton Park United Sparrows and Keysborough in a 1-1 draw. In the all Endeavour Hills start to the season, Endeavour Hills Fire carried on its strong FFA Cup qualifying rounds form to see off Endeavour United 3-2. David Schulberg cashed in twice for the Fire while Mathew Durand nailed the match-winner off the bench. Dandenong Warriors took to its State League 5 South debut with gusto against White Star Dandenong, making its entrance well known with a 6-4 goal-spree.
Dandenong City striker Dario Matkovic finished off Shaun Filipovic’s work with a clinical Pictures: JARROD POTTER penalty strike in the 4-1 victory over Ballarat. 152365 a little bit - especially at the start of the second half - we missed some opportunities,” McDonagh said. “Ashley’s header at the back post, Gonzalo (Freddi) gets one cleared off the line so we could’ve been two or three up but once again were still one each. “It was good to see that in the second part when we played against 10 men - when those opportunities arose we were able to finish off and come away with a strong result and a strong 1520 minutes to finish the game.” McDonagh thought Luke Burgess was strong at the back while Gonzalo Freddi’s up-front work rate was phenomenal alongside Filopovic and Antoniadis in the best afield. Things will only get better for City from here as it should see the return of striker Keegan Ziada for the upcoming clash against Kingston City
next Monday. Springvale White Eagles split the points with Sunshine George Cross after Jack Louziotis (90+1’) levelled the scores in the dying seconds. On Sunday afternoon, after the Journal went to print, Dandenong Thunder faced St Albans Saints away and in WNPL Southern United played Alamein SC. FFV STATE LEAGUES - SOUTH EAST AND SOUTH In the state leagues, South Springvale was rolled 0-2 by Malvern City while Noble Park United was outclassed by Doveton SC 1-3 as Stephen Begue (55’, 60’) and substitute Simba Saidi (70’) cleaned up. Dandenong South and Noble Park SC split the points 3-3 - with a Malik Sulemani hat-trick

A Dandy new SEABL era Stingrays relish road trip By JARROD POTTER
By JARROD POTTER
SEABL - ROUND 1 DANDENONG women got out of the blocks early to begin its next SEABL era. A high-scoring third term set the stage for the Rangers, in their first official clash under new coach Jeremi Moule, after Larissa Anderson left the post to focus on her WNBL coaching commitments. Two of Anderson’s great, all-year prospects Aimie Clydesdale (17 points, five assists) and Lauren Scherf (15 points, 13 rebounds) started the new season with a bang alongside up-and-comer Chloe Bibby and four-time SEABL champion Clare Papavs (16 points each). It was a tougher debut for the men on Saturday night, downed 77-86 by a surging AlburyWodonga, led by Donte Nicholas (24 points, 11 rebounds). The Rangers ground it out through the first half before an emphatic 25-9 third-term gave the hosts a five-point buffer at the final break. From there though the wheels fell off as Darren Perry’s charges couldn’t halt the Bandits’ raid. Liam Gibcus (11 points, 10 rebounds) started life in Dandenong with a double-double while Andrew Harms (21 points) led from the front. Also impresing were Owen Odigie (15 points, five rebounds), Chuck Long (eight points, 11 rebounds) and Mason Peatling (10 points, six rebounds). Dandenong hosts Brisbane on Saturday night.
TAC CUP - ROUND 2 STRONGER down the straight, Dandenong Stingrays surged in the second half to continue their unbeaten start to 2016. Even with Dandenong keen to get the monkey of its back and finally defeat North Ballarat, something it hasn’t achieved in recent outings, the match remained poised throughout the first half as neither team gained a major advantage. The trip to Bendigo - its second major road trip in as many weeks - didn’t faze the Rays in the third term though as they pumped it long through Bailey Morrish, Luke Dalmau and Tommy Glen. It was there for the taking as small forward Sam Fowler (three goals) continued his impressive start to life in the TAC Cup. The Dromana prospect has already impressed upon the coach with his speed and finishing ability in the forward half as his efforts pushed the lead out at the last break. On the other hand, the Rebels shot themselves in the foot with its inaccuracy, spraying 11 behinds to three-quarter-time in tandem with only four goals. Dandenong was able to brace itself defensively as well as Ryan Gains and Morrish locked up any chance North Ballarat had of mounting a come-back in the final term. “We never beat the Rebels in the last two years, so it was pleasing to beat them today and they’re a great team,” Dandenong coach Craig Black said. “First quarter might’ve come in and we thought it was pretty even - but the first half reflected that as it was a fairly even game. “But in the third quarter we were lucky enough to break away and had a three-goal lead at three-quarter-time and managed to hold on and win from there. The win was made sweeter with Dandenong getting it done without star tandem Josh Battle and Myles Poholke, who were unavailable due to the AFL Academy clash on Friday night. Keysborough started strongly with a 28-point opening term - led by monster matches from Ben Morwood (24 points, 11 rebounds) and David Smith (19 points, five rebounds). But no matter what the Cougars did, they couldn’t break the Gulls. Corey Standerfer (28 points, 18 rebounds) was almighty at both ends. Keysborough’s star recruit Calvin Enge (nine points)
was kept to 11 minutes with foul trouble as the Cougars had to make do on Standerfer without the SEABL champion. In a frenzied last few minutes, Keysborough managed to hold on and show its credentials in its inaugural Division 1 campaign. The women had a harder time against Melbourne University, downed 40-50 as Sarah Collins (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Tamara Matecic (nine points, 12 rebounds) did it all at both ends alongside Katie O’Neill (10 points, eight rebounds).
lie Martello and Nathan Scagliarini came into the side for their TAC Cup debuts and held their own in the 30-point victory. But the coach was most pleased with Fowler and thought it was a just reward for the 17-yearold to fight his way into the Stingrays squad after missing out in 2015. “It’s good for him and goes to show - he wasn’t in our program last year but it is reward for effort,” Black said. “For people who are still playing local footy, if they’re playing well locally we’ll definitely take notice and they’ll make their way into the program eventually.” Sitting on equal points with Murray Bushrangers atop the ladder, the TAC Cup has a bye this weekend for the Vic Country and Vic Metro trial matches. It leaves Dandenong with a couple of weeks to rest up before its clash against Bendigo at home on 16 April. “We wanted to win the first game and a focus on really running hard throughout today as they had the week off,” Black said. “So we’ll just reset and got Bendigo at home in two weeks and they had a really good win against Gippsland. “We’ll have a few changes again and a few people be available and hopefully the boys are up for the challenge again in two weeks time.” TAC CUP SCOREBOARD NORTH BALLARAT 2.5 4.6 4.11 5.11 (41) DANDENONG 2.2 6.5 9.7 10.11 (71) NORTH BALLARAT Goals: I. Lexus luxury to new level By DEREK OGDEN THE Lexus IS 200t is a success on many levels. Pricewise it’s positioned between the upper medium passenger sedan and lower premium car market and it performs like a luxury sedan or a spritely sports coupe depending on how the driver sets up the controls. Finally, the IS 200t offers a level of comfort and convenience normally found in vehicles positioned well into the luxury car market. A replacement for the IS 250, sharp prices characterise the IS 200t range which consists of three variants - Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury, coming to the market at $64,041, $73,055 and $84,385 respectively, on the road. One of two comprehensive Enhancement Packs can be added to the Luxury and F Sport models with a corresponding cost increase. The test vehicle, for example, the IS 200t Luxury, included the Enhancement Pack 1, which adds an electric tilt and slide moonroof, upping the price to $66,870 on the road. Lexus throws down the gauntlet to rivals with the IS 200t bringing a stack of standard luxury features including pre-collision safety, active cruise control, reversing alarm, rain-sensing wipers and power adjustable steering column. The new Lexus IS models feature a continuation of the classic IS lines sporty yet stylishly laid back.

Familiar look but Lexus sporty sedan comes with hidden advantages. The signature Lexus spindle grille has evolved with a three-dimensional design and a chrome-plated frame and darker grey insert from top to bottom. Front-on the view is complemented with Bi Xenon HID low/high beam headlamps with LED daytime running lamps. In profile, the car is characterised by a line which takes off to match
those of the rear taillight unit. The rear, once again, has a wide, sporty stance, emphasised by a trapezoidal design beginning between the inner section of the tail light units and flaring out towards the side sections of the bumper. The driver-oriented cockpit design was inspired by that of the Lexus LFA supercar with the dashboard divided
into a display zone and an operation zone to offer drivers more comfortable, ergonomic interaction with the vehicle's control systems. Soft-touch finishes can be found throughout, including padding on the centre console sides, while a piece of premium automotive embellishment is the silver metallic trim analogue clock with surface self illumination.
Generous 480 litre boot space is greatly enhanced by standard 60:40 split-folding rear seats. The touch-sensitive Lexus Remote Touch controller is positioned close at hand on the centre console and is the contact with many of the IS 200t convenience systems including satellite navigation and reversing camera. Under normal circumstances the test vehicle consumed 12 to13 litres per 100 kilometres on a day-to-day city commute and 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres at motorway speeds.
