■ The truth is out there - somewhere...

UFO in the air By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS IF MOBILE phones had been in the hands of frenzied Westall High School students in 1966, who knows how Dandenong Journal reporter Des Carroll may have covered one of the world’s most enduring UFO mysteries? Fifty years on, Mr Carroll’s conspiratorial stories of up to three silver flying objects hovering and vanishing from the skies above a paddock beside the Clayton South school still ring true. The question of what more than 100 people saw in broad daylight on 6 April 1966 remains unanswered. There were, however, no photos or videos of the awesome event and nothing more elaborate than a hand drawing of a flying saucer shape graced the Journal’s front page at the time. The official explanation proffered was that it was just a weather balloon. But Mr Carroll extracted vivid eyewitness descriptions of these objects which pointed to something more strange – despite the media clampdown by defence department authorities and a “terrified” school principal. Teacher Andrew Greenwood described to Mr Carroll at the time that the saucer was playing “cat and mouse” with pursuing aircraft. Mr Carroll recalled: “The kids were excited – abuzz with excitement, not terrified. I could see what a big buzz it was for them.”

The Journal’s first report of the Westall UFO mystery.

Mr Carroll, now 78 years old and living in Castlemaine, remembers getting the call-out to the high school after a tip-off from a Clayton stringer that day. He was led to a nearby grassed area where the objects allegedly landed. “The grass had been pressed down

in a large circle but it looked bloody impressive.” Theories flourished. Talk of a US military exercise or experiment probably stemmed from the increasing American defence presence on Australian soil and chatter of Communist threats, Mr Carroll said.

A former Air Force member in the Journal office thought the incident was just a military target practice exercise. “But I said to him there are no military airports anywhere nearby,” Mr Carroll recalls. “I didn’t really come out with any opinion at all.”

For many days afterwards, he found himself sidelined from the looming federal election. He often had to field interrogatory phone calls from a “mad Yank” from a Moordialloc UFO society. “It was a fun story to do.” Continued page 6

Hopes rise for safety hub to fight violence A LOCAL family violence ambassador hopes Casey will be one of the locations for a one-stop safety hub, recommended in the 1900-page report released by the Royal Commission into Family Violence. After 13 months of interviews the report was officially released on Wednesday 30 March, with the State Government promising to implement all 227 recommendations. Among the recommendations was the proposal to set up onestop safety hubs, facilities installed throughout the state so victims can find information and services in their local area. Challenge Family Violence ambassador Jim Reiher, also a member of the Casey Multifaith network, said he hoped Casey would be selected for one of the hub locations. The City of Casey has previous-

ly been ranked as the municipality with the highest number of family violence incidents. From April 2014 to March 2015 there were 3759 family incidents reported in Casey compared to 3636 in the same period a year earlier the most of any local government area. “I hope we might be one of the hubs, you’d hope they target areas that have the highest percentage of reported issues,” Mr Reiher said. Other key recommendations in the report included the proposal of new victim safety laws, a rehousing program for victims, the call for more family violence courts, the proposal of an independent Family Violence Agency to hold governments to account, as well a focus on responses from local councils. “The report looks really good, it’s really important, really timely

and definitely needed,” Mr Reiher said. “The report admits some progress has been made and there’s more to be done. “As a White Ribbon ambassador I’m very pleased that this has come out.” The Casey Multifaith network is also referenced in the report, after entering a submission to the Royal Commission. “We have felt that faith communities often don’t want to be associated with issues related to family violence for fear of stigma or other such apprehensions,” the Casey Multifaith network submitted. “We have often found that faith communities want to brush such issues as family violence under the carpet and either do not want to deal with the problems, or want to hide them.”

Following the report’s release, Premier Daniel Andrews said the Victorian Government would implement “every single one” of the recommendations. “Last year 37 Victorians were murdered by the people they trusted the most, and we failed every single one of them,” he said. “Family violence is a silent crime, deployed by cowards behind closed doors. “It’s Australia’s number one lawand-order issue but it’s taken us too long to admit it. “The numbers are staggering. The human cost - unacceptable. “And one thing’s for certain, more of the same policies will only mean more of the same tragedies.” If you need help contact Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre on 1800 015 188, or go to www.safesteps.org.au

Tech school begins to take skilled shape By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CASEY’S new technical school will be set up at Chisholm TAFE in Berwick. After months of speculation, Chisholm’s Berwick campus was confirmed as the host site for the new tech school at a special announcement on Tuesday 29 March, attended by Chilsholm Institute CEO Maria Peters and MPs Judith Graley, Luke Donnellan and Jude Perera. Construction of the technical school is expected to start in November 2017, while the centre is slated to open in late 2018, according to an officer’s report discussed at a Casey Council meeting in January. In the lead-up to the 2014 State Election, Labor promised $125 million for 10 new tech schools in Victoria. The Casey Tech School will be focused on biomedical, health and medical technology, as well as high tech manufacturing, production and processing technologies. “It is fantastic to see the Casey Tech School taking shape as so many from within our local community are working very hard to see it become a reality,” Ms Graley said. “The Berwick Campus of Chisholm Institute is an outstanding location that will ensure students from our local schools have access to many further education opportunities.” Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the announcement was a major boost

His comments come less than a month after the mayor slammed Monash University’s decision to cease teaching at its Berwick cam-

pus prior to the end of 2018. The matter was raised in urgent business at a recent Casey Council meeting by Mayor Aziz, who described the closure as a “massive kick in the guts”. Sharing his own opinion with the chamber, Cr Gary Rowe slammed Ms Graley’s response to the Monash announcement, saying she was “walking away from a tough decision and not saying one word”. Ms Graley hit back at the comments, saying they were “wrong”

A MENTALLY ill man who threatened shoppers with a knife at the Dandenong Market will not face charges. The 31-year-old man locked himself in a fire hydrant cupboard off Cleeland Street in Dandenong, about 1pm on Sunday 27 March. Special Operations Group (SOG) police used shields for protection and tied a rope around the cupboard door handle to pull it open, before spraying the man with capsicum spray as he hid inside. Dramatic images of the siege showed a large heavily armed police presence and Easter shoppers being evacuated from the area. The man was reported to have been trying to shut the door while covering his burning eyes and was tackled to the ground outside the cupboard about 1.55pm. Reports said the man was on his way to get psychiatric care at hospital when he jumped from a car and started the hour-long siege. The man was taken to The Alfred hospital for assessment after the incident.

and that she “has never lacked courage or shied away from hard work”. “Unlike some councillors at Casey, every day I work hard to ensure that every child gets the best possible education opportunities,” she said. “I have also wanted every student in my electorate to have the chance to go to university. “That’s why I have always maintained that Monash should have a local presence at Berwick.”

LOCAL police are urging tradies to secure their tools after a “significant rise” in thefts from utes. In a statement posted on the Casey Eyewatch Facebook page on Wednesday 23 March, Leading Senior Constable Brett Owen, from the Proactive Policing Unit, urged residents to be vigilant. “Police have recently identified a significant rise in the number of incidents involving tools being stolen from utilities, vans and trailers belonging to tradesmen,” the statement read. “These tools are being stolen from vehicles parked in both residential streets and at work sites. “Having tools stolen can be both costly and an interruption to business so it’s important to store tools securely when they are not in use.” Casey police have also thrown their support behind a new video campaign calling on the community to lock their cars. Released this month by Victoria Police, the 46-second video entitled ‘The Thankful Thief, shows a motorist willingly handing over her belongings to a nearby thief.

Awards promote region's high achievers IN 1990, a small group of businessmen met to form a program that recognised, profiled and highlighted the success and achievements by local industry in a number of categories. They would honour 15 businesses each year and present the Premier Regional Business Award to one of the year’s nominees. A few years later, the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce took over the responsibility of co-ordinating the awards. They have since grown to become one of the most prestigious local business awards in the country. The aim of the Premier Regional Business Awards is to recognise and promote outstanding achievement in the region and over the years we have seen some of the most successful and highly-regarded companies from the Greater Dandenong area come through our awards program. Nominees are drawn in various categories and winners are announced and presented at a gala dinner each year.

AMANDA CHECKEN GREATER DANDENONG CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EXECUTIVE OFFICER

This year we are honouring 25 years of the Premier Regional Business Awards. Throughout 2015 our breakfasts profiled past winners of the major awards and featured a retrospective look at where the businesses have come from since winning their award. The culmination of this year will be the gala dinner, to be held on Wednesday 13 April. Featuring 12 past major award winners, the night will look back at the past 25 years of the awards and will also feature a live voting system

to award a People’s Choice Award to the most significant winner from the past 25 years. While this year’s awards have been advertised as the final, the chamber recognises that a business recognition program is a vital function for both the chamber and the Greater Dandenong business community. The Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards will take the place of the Premier Regional Business Awards, with its first breakfast taking place in mid-May. Each breakfast will feature nominated businesses from the region and the breakfast program will culminate with a final award presentation at the end of 2016. Featured within these awards will be a special Retail Award, which will encompass elements of a public vote to nominate a favourite retailer. The chamber has worked closely with the now-closed Dandenong Retail Traders Association to merge its former retail award into a new one.

Once the public vote has closed, the favourite retailers will then become nominated businesses and will be profiled at one of the chamber breakfasts through the year. The vision of the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce is to promote regional growth through leadership, support programs, networking and civic involvement. Over the past 65 years the chamber has been an integral part of the business community in the Greater Dandenong area and has been privileged to represent businesses in one of the largest growth corridors in the country. The chamber offers the opportunity to meet other local business people in a region which is well-served by business groups that cover retail, manufacturing, financial, legal and commercial services. If you are interested in joining the chamber, call me on 9794 8881 or email info@greaterdandenongchamber.com.au.

It appears that those engaged upon the highly commendable work connected with the Dandenong Red Cross Society have for some time past been anything but a “happy family”. Matters came to a climax, however, some days ago, owing to certain action taken by the President of the Shire (Cr Pearson) and in consequence, the shire council was appealed to by the hon secretary (Miss Hayman) and a deputation which waited upon the Municipal body on Thursday afternoon. Miss Hayman wrote as follows, applying for the use of a room in the Shire Hall for the purpose of the work of the local branch of the society. Mr Bishop advised this was where one roo had it's leg "hacked off and embryo removed". in prison. In a statement from the RSPCA, CEO Dr Liz Walker said the organisation was “sickened by any acts of deliberate cruelty against animals”. “There is a known link between violence against animals and violence against people,” she said. “We take deliberate acts of violence against animals very, very seriously.” In a bid to stop the slaughter of animals in his own street, Mr Bishop is crowd funding to install cameras. “It’s an ongoing problem in this street, we had a roo knocked over and had it legs broken six months ago, we had to call a Wildlife Victoria member to put it down,” Mr Bishop said. “We also have issues with rubbish dumping, drug deals and other undesirables in this street and I want to put up a steel pole topped with three wireless signal cameras to deter them or catch them. “I felt so helpless not being able to give police a better description or the number plates, I was so shocked by what I saw and I thought what can I do about it.” Mr Bishop is hoping to crowd fund up to $1000 to buy and install the cameras to capture footage of the vacant paddocks and the street. AN UNBORN joey was decapitated in a sickening, violent group attack on two kangaroos in Lysterfield South. The tortured bodies of two kangaroos and an embryo were found off Battersby Way, near the Churchill National Park, in the early hours of Wednesday 23 March. Lysterfield South resident Robert Bishop disturbed the group of “yobbos” with a torch, before hearing a “hammering sound” and making the grisly discovery. “At about 11pm we had idiots hooning around the empty block next to us, chasing the kangaroos with their 4WDs,” Mr Bishop said. “There were two vehicles and they were screaming and yelling out the windows as they sped after the poor terrified animals.” The drivers hurled abuse at Mr Bishop as they left the scene, but it’s suspected the same men returned an hour later with weapons to kill. Mr Bishop recalls seeing six to eight men gathered around a twitching kangaroo, about midnight. “They were standing in the headlights of a very large white 4WD ... the unfortunate kangaroo was upside down, its legs splayed wide and one of the men was hacking away at it with a very large knife. “The other males were talking excitedly and watching the spectacle, while another group was on the grass and I could hear a hammering sound coming from them.” Endeavour Hills police were too late to catch the men, but found the two adult kangaroos with their throats slashed, ears hacked off and organs spilling out. One leg had been chopped off and the unborn joey was found in the gutter. A devastated Mr Bishop said he was still coming to terms with the ordeal which unfolded on his driveway. “They would have had to have used a big knife or a machete, why would you cut off their ears, that’s just sick,” he said. Mr Bishop described the men involved as “singlet wearing yobbos”. “They were Australian boys, I know because of the accents when they were swearing at me,” he said. Sergeant Terry Lloyd from Endeavour Hills police said there was no link to the decapitated kangaroo found in a Diamond Creek park on Australia Day, however the investigation was ongoing. “We are appealing for witnesses,” Sgt Lloyd said. “It’s quite disturbing,” “We know they were driving a white 4WD and urge anyone to contact police straight away, write down number plates and get a description of the offenders if it’s safe to do so.” It’s been speculated that the men may have used a bow and arrow to initially kill the animals. The incident has prompted the RSPCA to remind offenders that animal cruelty offences can face fines of more than $74,000 or up to two years

UFO mystery 50 years on From page 1 Is there anything out there? Oakleigh firefighter John Williams was among the first responders to reports of a UFO in the Westall area 50 years ago. 152258 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

The story endures, marked by a flying saucer playground in Grange Reserve, which is where the object landed and was then a paddock called The Grange, and more than 100 eyewitness accounts collected by Canberra-based researcher Shane Ryan. He says the ongoing conspiracy such as the unexplained presence of Department of Defence officers at the scene helps keep the story alive.

Des Carroll, who broke the Westall UFO story in the Dandenong Journal 50 years ago. 152319

“We know there was some sort of air force involvement. There was no paper trail to tell us why they were there and what they were doing. “If a solution came forward we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” After 11 years of collating eyewitness reports, Mr Ryan feels he is piecing together the jigsaw. “It’s gradually putting a degree of pressure on who may be holding the keys to the mystery. “Maybe the keys are in another country, maybe no one around has the keys or no one ever had the keys – the box was empty.

“My hope is it will put more pressure on those people, if they exist.” The story still captures national media – a spread in Woman’s Day, a feature on The Project and a Studio Ten feature this week to coincide with the 50th anniversary. In January after a TV segment, Mr Ryan heard from witnesses who hadn’t contacted him before. One of them was Oakleigh firefighter John Williams who was among the first responders to the high school. He is shy of the event’s controversy but vividly remembers the day. Expecting to find a fire, Mr Williams and crew-mate ‘Mopey’ drove to where a group of excited kids were milling around at the high school. They were pointed to where UFOs had landed. An older man and his wife standing on the corner of Westall and Fairbank roads directed the fireys to The Grange’s orchards. “We didn’t find a fire. We found

an area of grass that’s flattened, about twice the size of your lounge room.” Deep down, the two firefighters knew they’d found “something” even though their colleagues dismissed the event. “We tried to keep an open mind. We haven’t got an answer for it but we thought something has happened here. “All of these people can’t be wrong.”

Crims at ten NEW crime figures have revealed 10-year-olds are among the culprits committing violent and brazen home invasions throughout Casey and affluent inner city suburbs. For more than eight months, sleeping families have been falling victim to baby-faced thieves. Statistics paint a shocking spike in teen and tween acts of theft, assault and burglary across the south-east. Last year’s figures reveal offenders aged 10 to 14 committed more than double the number of burglaries and break-ins, compared to 2014. Youth and adult counsellor at Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre, Emma, said she couldn’t put the surge in crime down to one thing. “The sense of disengagement that youth feel can lead to behaviours that might seem bizarre, but make perfect sense to them in that moment,” Emma said. “It comes down to the context that they are living in, such as family breakdown. “They may have experienced poverty or exposure to violence and crime, social isolation and poor relationships with significant adults or may not feel engaged with different institutions.” The alarming increase in crime in primary aged students and tweens has been well documented in recent months, as Dandenong's Apex Gang made

headlines at Moomba after they were embroiled in a brawl in Melbourne’s CBD. Several arrests followed the incident, but local police continue to battle the youth crime epidemic in the south east. According to the latest Crime Statistics Agency figures, offences committed by 10 to 14-year-olds jumped from 101 to 167 in Greater Dandenong last year - a 66 per cent rise. Dandenong Inspector Bruce Kitchen partly attributed the 18 per cent rise in offences in Dandenong by 10 to 19-year-olds to the car-thieving Apex Gang. “But it is not necessarily all to do with that particular young group,” Insp Kitchen said. “The real concern is if the home-owner goes downstairs to get a drink of water and is confronted by (burglars), then anything can happen.” Insp Kitchen pointed to the “ice epidemic” and more “kids” wandering at night to the spike in thefts. “Ice remains a problem for us,” he said. Casey home invasions committed by youths aged 15 to 19 was also up 24 per cent in 2015 compared to the previous year and Detective Sergeant Ivan Bobetic, from the Dandenong Embona Taskforce said such offences had been ongoing for two years. “The level of violence and lack of contrition is alarming for their ages - it seems they have no concept of what they are doing, conscience for the

victims or they simply don’t care,” Det Sgt Bobetic said. The stats showed the majority of robberies committed in Casey in 2015 were by offenders aged 15 to 19, with the number of youthful thieves tripling since 2014. Assault and related offences by youths in Casey has also surged in the past two years with a jump of 11 per cent in the age category 20 to 24, but local youth counsellor, Emma said the media played a part in the problem. “Things kids want are very visible and seem accessible, they see media figures they admire with things they want. “And it seems not very accessible to them if their future looks bleak, or if they’re not doing well at school, they choose to find a different way to attain these things which can lead to crime.” “Crime is presented in the media constantly and in some cases they don’t get a jail sentence or any form of penalty. So the excessive reporting of the crimes and poor outcomes are presented as an opportunity when the ways are blocked for your future, you start narrowing that pathway.” But a positive Emma said the stats meant one thing: “We need to be more pro-active to help youth make better decisions.”

Bail for ram raid accused By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DOVETON man has been re-bailed after being charged over a milk bar ram-raid last month. Jeremy Smith, 18, was accused in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court of being inside a vehicle used to smash the front door of the Nunawading shop about 5.30am on 3 March. Smith and a co-offender then allegedly stolen about $5000 worth of cash, cigarettes, chocolates and drinks. Police prosecutor Sergeant Mark Thomson told the court on Tuesday 22 March that the property damage had yet to be assessed. He told the bail hearing that police

officers had recognised Smith on CCTV footage of the burglary. When arrested, Smith was hiding in his home’s bathroom and wearing the same top and glasses as in the footage, Sgt Thomson said. In making admissions, Smith told police that two older men had forced him into the robbery to clear his drug debt. The men – who Smith refused to name – were in the car at the time, the accused claimed to police. Smith’s lawyer said unusually Smith had no children’s court history but only in the past year had dropped out of school and work. The accused had known his associates

since his early teens but “fell” into his offending behaviour while having “nothing to do”, the lawyer told the court. The “quite naive” Smith had a commitment to his education despite having to leave several schools because of severe bullying. He had dreams of being an inventor and a “degree of potential”, his lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen rhetorically asked Smith why he thought his associates had used him during the robbery. “So they’re not sitting here with you now. “If you have the type of brain that can think of things that haven’t been thought of, use it (constructively).”

Mr Vandersteen noted Smith had already been on bail for serious charges laid by Box Hill Sexual Offences Criminal Investigation Taskforce. He re-granted Smith bail due to the accused’s young age and lack of prior convictions. “No-one wants to deal with someone like you in the system,” he said. “You seem very lost.” Smith was bailed to a Doveton address of a relative serving a community corrections order – what his lawyer described as the best available option. In the meantime, Smith would be referred to a Koori intensive support program to focus on his rehabilitation.

Youth take the lead in parliament house visit By LACHLAN MOORHEAD DRIVEN high school students from Casey got the opportunity to tour Parliament House in Canberra recently. The City of Casey Australia Day Study Tour gave participating Year 11 students the opportunity to see the workings of local, State and Federal government in Australia. The Federal component of the tour was held over five days and included a three-day visit to Canberra where students met Federal MPs, toured Parliament House, attended Question Time, and met the Prime Minister. Holt MP Anthony Byrne met with the 2016 City of Casey Australia Day Study Tour students during their visit to Parliament. “I had a great discussion with a group of 10 of Casey’s future leaders who were chosen by the City of Casey to be members of the Australia Day Study Tour this year,” Mr

Byrne said. “We discussed national security matters, the upcoming Local Youth Summit, mental health issues and the life of being a Federal Parliamentarian. “These young leaders impressed me with their detailed, thoughtful questions and their concerns for the community. “Their parents and their community should be proud of them.” The members of this year’s Casey study tour group include Abdul Mohammed, Anagha Ramachandra, Georgia Coward-Smith, Gul Dasta Ali, Joshua Hoxha, Lachlan Iape, Pooja Jeyadeva, Shakila Husani, Zoya Kovacs, and Zachary Vogrig. “I wish to congratulate the City of Casey on running this successful program on an annual basis and I look forward to further engagement with the study tour students during the year,” Mr Byrne said.

THE 18th annual Casey Kids Carnival is just around the corner, and families across the region are being urged to come down to the event on Saturday 9 April. The carnival will be held at Akoonah Park in Berwick, from 11am to 4pm, with a jam-packed line-up planned. “The Casey Kids Carnival offers something for the whole family including live performances, interactive activities, rides, market stalls, food trucks, roving entertainment and face painting,” Mayor Sam Aziz said. “This year the lovable Minions and characters from The Wizard of Oz have been locked in to perform on the main stage and do meet and greets, giving children the chance to get a photo with their favourite big screen stars. “There will be other performances on the main stage throughout the day from professional and community acts including singers, dancers, musicians and storytellers.” Mayor Aziz said guests won’t be “short of things to do”. “Around the oval there will be an abundance of market stalls, businesses and food vans to make your way around to, along with community groups conducting interactive activities,” he said.

Dandenong Community Shed Times are changing in our Shed! Firstly we have a new name, Dandenong Community Shed. Both men and women are welcome at our Shed, the renovations are complete, and the shed will now be a lot more comfortable for our learners using the area, with cooling/heating installed and full insulation applied to the interior. The power has been run for both power points and lighting and will mean there is opportunity to use more equipment throughout the entire shed. The funding for the extension and the renovations to our shed has come from the Department of Health and Human Services through the Strengthening Men’s Shed Program and from the City of Greater Dandenong’s contribution. Thanks to both those organisations for their support to achieve this goal. The size of our shed was always an issue for us, and has limited us to how many people could be in the shed at any time. Now with the extension it makes it possible to enrol more learners. Dandenong Neighbourhood House: Ph: 9792 5298

They can occur in many sizes and shapes and can be found all over the body. Most skin types are easily treated with the correct energy output for your individual complexion.

A tale of two sheds By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE tug-of-war over the push for a new men’s shed in Casey is showing no signs of dissipating. Casey's Councillor Rafal Kaplon has hit back at former councillor Rob Wilson as the pair continue to push rival bids to set up a men’s shed in either Narre Warren North or Endeavour Hills. Casey Council last month unanimously passed a motion raised by Cr Kaplon to look at funding options for a new men’s shed in the region, and last week resolved to host a meeting with key players. Council’s move comes with the backing of the Berwick Men’s Shed in Akoo-

nah Park as the State Government is set to provide $60,000 in funding for community groups to use towards new men’s sheds. But Mr Wilson has also announced plans to set up a men’s shed in the same area, in a separate bid. Mr Wilson has said the Narre Warren North Cricket Club would auspice the application for his new men’s shed, which is also earmarked for Endeavour Hills or Narre Warren North. But in an email response sent on 16 March to Mr Wilson and Star News, Cr Kaplon said Mr Wilson’s project did not meet the City of Casey’s “wider aspirations”.

“As council’s unanimously supported proposal is seeking to develop a more broadly based Men’s Shed for the north of the municipality, Cr (Rosalie) Crestani and I, do not support providing council funds for a project which does not meet council’s wider aspirations,” Cr Kaplon said. “Furthermore, due to changes in state legislation ward funds are no longer available to councillors and the budget process for the new financial year has already concluded.” In his own email sent to Casey Council and the media on 15 March seeking support, Mr Wilson said he was after a $2000 government grant for a shed to be

set up at the Narre Warren North Recreation Reserve. “We have a core group of men that we currently bring together via Over 60 and Over 68s outdoor cricket and we aim to open up a Men’s Shed that will meet the social and recreational needs of older men in Endeavour Hills and Narre Warren North,” he said. “We currently have several community partnerships with local groups who will refer men to this Recreational Men’s Shed and will also partner with various local Scouts groups to make the recreational facilities available to them to assist with their programs.”

Stop, Casey ... time for a cuppa with a copper CARE for a cuppa? Casey police officers stopped by Fountain Gate Shopping Centre last week to share a coffee with residents and speak to them about their duties. The event, which took place on Thursday morning at Degani’s Baker Cafe, is part of the ongoing Coffee with a Cop program, an initiative set up originally in the United States and launched at the Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre last year. Coffee with a Cop was started in Hawthorne, California, in 2011 after members of the local police department looked into ways they could interact better with their community. In less than two years Coffee with a Cop events have been hosted in more than 2000 communities across 48 US states. Victoria Police has since looked abroad to see what community projects they could draw on to improve community relations.

Sense of belonging celebrated A NEW art exhibition has been unveiled by Casey Council in conjunction with Harmony Day. The exhibition, entitled ‘Belonging - Celebration of Harmony Day’, is currently on display at the Cranbourne Library Art Space until 30 April, after which pieces from the exhibition will be moved to Doveton and Endeavour Hills libraries from 3 May to 4 June. Casey Mayor Sam Aziz encouraged residents to head to the exhibition, which the Federal Government contributed funding to through the Families and Communities Program. “This new exhibition highlights the many cultures and communities that call the City of Casey home and coincides with Harmony Day - a day for all Australians to embrace cultural diversity and to share what we have in common,” he said. “The exhibition features works from a number of local artists and participants of the Women Living and Learning Together program including Indigenous artworks, mandalas and paintings all representing circles of community and belonging in Casey.” For further information or to view a list of other exhibitions on display at art spaces across Casey visit www. casey.vic.gov.au/artspaces.

A HAMPTON Park father suffering from kidney failure has vowed to keep fighting to raise awareness about the illness. Earlier this month, Michael Marks and his family raised just over $1000 through organising a special trivia night. While pleased with the money raised, Michael was hoping for more people than the 35-odd attendees, and told Star News he would continue raising awareness and ensure the next event was better publicised. “I’ve got to fight for it because I’m on dialysis - I need a kidney,” he said. “Somebody’s got to stand up.” In 2014 renal failure saw Michael suffer from two cardiac arrests, stopping his heart for 35 minutes during which the Hampton Park man was declared clinically dead. Luckily during this incident, Michael was already at the hospital, and doctors were able to save his life, but the 50-year-old has been constantly reminded of his frailty as he waits desperately on the transplant list for a new kidney. In the meantime, Michael, his wife Sandra, and their sons Paul and Shayne worked tirelessly to seek support for the special trivia night fund-raiser, in conjunction

with Kidney Health Australia. But the four of them found it incredibly difficult to get local business on board, which has spurred Michael on to raise awareness about the terrible nature of kidney failure. He has a fire in the belly to make sure the campaign keeps going, and he is already thinking of ways to organise the next event. “I’d just like to see awareness get out there in the community,” he said. “If you can’t get awareness, you can’t get a cure and if you can’t get a cure, people die. “It’s a pretty simple scenario.” Michael undergoes dialysis treatment at the Cranbourne Integrated Care Unit three days a week, for five hours at a time. Among many concessions, Michael is restricted to only doing paper work for his gardening business, as he is now unable to do the physical work he once relished. However, while his physical prowess has been diminished by the disease, the same can’t be said for Michael’s mental strength. “It’s made me realise you’ve ‘gotta live life to the fullest - you can’t just turn around and take things for granted,” he said. For more information, contact Michael at mrmarks@netspace. net.au.

NEW HOMES & LAND

CHARITY HOME AUCTION FOR ROYAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Good Friday turned great when Villawood Properties teamed up with Henley Properties yet again to auction a home at its Trillium community in Mickleham, with all proceeds going to the Royal Children’s Hospital as part of the Good Friday Appeal. It was another fantastic day with a large crowd turning out for an exciting auction which saw the beautiful Henley home eventually sold to the Elsikmani family for $663,000. They were ecstatic to have purchased such a great home for their growing family

and even more pleased that the purchase would help support the great work undertaken at the hospital. It brings to approximately $4.4 million the amount raised for the hospital through this initiative since Villawood Properties became involved seven years ago. This magnificent community event is Villawood’s largest single philanthropic initiative and the fact that it supports such a worthy cause which resonates with so many staff makes it even more special. CHILDHOOD memories can be painful. Just ask Health Minister Jill Hennessy who revealed at a public event on 31 March that she’d endured tearful visits to Dandenong Market. And the source of her misery? She was begging to visit the doughnut truck which, of course, would cover most of the healthy food groups, one would think. WHICH local politician went strolling in parkland only to come across an apparently abandoned drug stash? About five kilos of cannabis in a calico bag was found tucked under a tree in a popular Dandenong park. The pollie tells us they did the responsible thing and deposited every bud, leaf and stem at the local police station. After a degree of interrogation from the police, the pollie declared their innocence and then supposed that nine out of 10 people would have probably thrown the stash in the rubbish. The police officer flatly replied that nine out of 10 would have kept it for smoking. DANDENONG Journal is set to be in the national TV spotlight in coming days. Channel 10’s The Project visited the Journal offices to peruse archive stories and interview a reporter on the Westall Primary School UFO mystery, which celebrates its 50th anniversary on 6 April. We’re told The Project will screen its story on 5 April, and stablemate Studio 10 will also mark the event the following day.

NOBLE Park footballers will swap the Sherrins for golf clubs to support their mate during his cancer battle. Funds raised at Club Noble’s annual charity golf day at Keysborough Golf Club on Thursday 7 April will go to Chris ‘Rabbit’ Heenan and his young family. His former team-mates and Club Noble last year rallied to raise $30,000 for the Heenans, following Chris’s diagnosis with stage four prostate cancer. “Rabbit was a very popular player at the club and has two young daughters to care for,” golf day convenor Grant Connolly said. “It is only fitting that we support him and his young family in his time of need. “Rabbit’s condition has really hit home and highlights the importance for men of all ages to have regular checks and not ignore early warning signs.” Mr Connolly said the golf day was open to anyone who wanted to take a stand on men’s health, and was a great way to mix sport with support. Call Club Noble on 9546 0653 or register at the club in Moodemere Street, Noble Park, to get involved.

1. What is something people don’t know about you? Most people wouldn’t know that I used to volunteer with the Casey Cardinia Community Legal Service, working with solicitors at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to help secure intervention orders for families at risk of domestic violence. 2. What was your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment is arriving in Australia with my family when we moved to Melbourne from Poland in March, 1992. Although I was only 6 years old, it still sticks out clearly in my mind and my first impressions were that it was a very hot and tropical place in comparison to the European winter we just left. 3. What would your last meal be? It would definitely have to be a jumbo sized pepperoni pizza with extra pepperoni and garlic. Plus some Coca-

Cola to wash it down with. 4. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? It would have to be the fall of the Berlin Wall, I was 4 years old when it occurred and don’t really remember it unfolding on television but it was definitely a historic and defining moment for the world marking the end of communism and the Cold War. 5. What is your favourite television show? This is a hard one to answer! I would have to say I have two favourites, the first being ‘The West Wing’ with Martin Sheen which has unfortunately concluded; so my current favourite is hands down the ‘Game of Thrones’ series. 6. What is your favourite book? Another hard question, but in terms of captivating my imagination I would have to say the Harry Potter

series by J.K. Rowling. 7. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? John Howard, John F. Kennedy, Mikhail Gorbachev, Malcolm Turnbull, Matthew Guy, and Steve Bracks. I would love to see how they all interact and what they would have to say. 8. What has been your most embarrassing moment? During a visit to the Daintree National Park whilst on holidays I decided to venture out on some boulders in the middle of an ice cold mountain river, at which point I slipped and fell into the river emerging to the laughter of all the tourists present. 9. What era would you like to live in? I think it would have to be in the sixties, it was a wild time of personal and political liberation for many people around the world. I would love to have experienced those times first hand. 10. What was your first or best concert? My first and only concert was by Depeche Mode, an English electronic band formed in 1980. I saw it in Prague whilst in the Czech Republic and the atmosphere was amazing, my favourite song was ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’.

Stingrays are happy bunnies By JARROD POTTER YOUTH GIRLS ACADEMY CHALLENGE REVIEW GRAND FINAL THE spoils of summertime success went to the Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls in an Easter Monday grand final that had it all. Dandenong went into the final Youth Girls Challenge clash of 2016 well-placed but slight underdogs against the undefeated Sandringham Dragons. It took everything they had just to make the grand final after the Stingrays dug deep to take a come-from-behind semifinal triumph over Calder. But in the grand final the tables were turned. From the first bounce Dandenong surged in front and held on all day to bring the first football flag back to Shepley Oval since the old Dandy Redlegs days. Led from the front by a fullground performance off skipper Georgia Walker, who starred through the centre before shifting to centre-half-back for the final term to man the dangerous Dragons’ forwards, Dandenong had stellar contributions across the lines. Three quick Stingrays goals in the first term left the Dragons chasing all day as Tyla Hanks, Imani Francis and Brooke Struylaart sunk the slipper into a few choice majors. Forward pressure proved critical. Dandenong’s tackling across the board left the Dragons unable to escape their defensive end. Hanks, Jas Grierson, and many others rode the Dragons into the ground time and time again. Kayla Ripari, Georgia Gee and Teagan Sheldon went in

hard at every ball while Emily Browning, Suede Croad and Jess Provan provided huge runand-carry across the flanks and beyond. But it would be hard to single out any Stingray who didn’t do her job when called upon as Dandenong had answers for everything Sandringham threw down. Dandenong set up the victory in the first half - booting most of its score with the firstterm wind. The Rays went into the half with a 22-point lead and didn’t kick a goal afterwards, by then the damage was done. Sandringham toiled to keep the game moving, but couldn’t close the gap in the blustery, cold conditions at Frankston Park. Despite the topsy-turvy final half, as the Dragons put in for one last gutsy effort, the Stingrays emerged with a 4.8 (32) to 1.1 (7) winning score line to capture the first Challenge premiership. For Sandringham, Katherine Smith and Isabel Huntington were beyond exceptional and left it all out on the park in heartbreaking but extremely commendable performances. Above all everyone left the ground smiling as the first thing both sides did was to shake hands, or more relevantly share hugs of joy and dismay equally. After that, in a show of great spirit, they took a combined sides photo to cap off the remarkably successful inaugural Challenge competition. Dandenong coach Scott Gowans was amazed by the side’s adherence to its plans and structures and to keep the ball moving even when up against

Panthers are in the swing for a sensational victory VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET - MEN’S PREMIER 4TH XI GRAND FINAL REVIEW DANDENONG’S fourth XI brought the premiership back to Shepley Oval in a sensational show of depth that proved too powerful for Carlton. The future of Dandenong (3/179) cricket shone last weekend as the young Panthers emphatically brushed aside Carlton (87) at Casey Fields in the fourth XI finale. Dandy’s fourth line-up had a full contingent to pick from this year as schoolboys filled the coffers with premium players all the way through the four sides. Luke McMaster (3/15) was sensational early on Saturday to skittle Carlton’s top order, while Jye Driscoll (3/12) and Niresh Drukeshkumar (2/26) picked up scalps with the new ball too. With 26 overs left on the first day, Austin Heldt (55) and Andrey Fernando (38) batted exceptionally to guide the Panthers across the line with a few overs left in the day, but

the twin challenges of the Frankston sea-side gale and the Dragons. But, most of all, giving the Stingrays a premiership to put on the mantelpiece was the best part of all. “I think the ability to rotate the ball, hold possession when we needed to and move out wide and bring the ball into the forward line was a feature and they listed and implemented it,” Gowans said. “To be the first side to win a premiership at the Stingrays means a lot and it means even more because the girls lost last year, came back and regrouped to win it this year.” Walker’s performance earned her the player of the match award as she signed off her Stingrays Youth Girls’ journey in the best way possible. “It’s pretty awesome - especially for the girls as the boys haven’t won a grand final yet, to be the first Youth Girls and first team at Dandy to win a grand final is pretty special,” Walker said. “Basically, I was told to stick on this player and beat her in every contest as she’d been smashing us in the third quarter and just to do my job and stay in front and I guess I did that.” It is the first premiership won by a Stingrays side as Dandenong celebrates its 25th season in the TAC Cup. CHALLENGE GRAND FINAL SCOREBOARD SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS 0.0 1.0 1.0 1.1 (7) DANDENONG STINGRAYS 3.2 4.4 4.7 4.8 (32) DANDENONG Goals: I. Francis, K. Ripari, B. Struylaart, T. Hanks. Best: G. Walker, T. their fall left a slight glimmer of hope for Carlton which insisted on going to the second day. It was to no avail, though, when the Panthers’ middleorder men Dane Heverin (41) and Josh Allen (24no) batted Carlton out of the match leaving the Dandy boys to celebrate the flag. “We were pretty lucky with the kind of guys we could get on the park - had a couple of guys who came from school cricket this year,” Dandenong fourths skipper Jordan Mackenzie said. “We had four seamers who were too good for fourth XI cricket, to be honest, and that showed on the weekend. “Batting wise, a similar story. We had 12 players between 15 and 23 and probably all 12 are far better than fourth XI cricket, so it’s a good position for the club to be in.” Mackenzie praised the side’s all-round efforts, especially the first up spell from McMaster first XI bowler Adam McMaster’s younger brother - and the work of Driscoll, Heldt and Fernando.

“Heldt and Fernando are 16 and 17 years old - they’re bursting with talent and are products of Owen Mottau - our batting coach - so he’s pretty proud of them,” Mackenzie said. “You can tell with the way they bat that they’re pretty tidy players.” It put a great footnote on Dandenong’s up and down season across the grades and especially leaves plenty in the tank for the side’s 2016/17 Victorian Premier Cricket campaign. “It’s exciting that we could get the job done and show guys at the club - especially with a new coach coming in,” Mackenzie said. “That we’ve got these guys who can step up on the big stage and also have a truckload of talent.” DANDENONG 4TH XI PREMIERS: Jordan Mackenzie (capt), Austin Heldt, Andrey Fernando, Dane Heverin, Josh Allen, Zachary Harrison, Jordan Wilkinson, Jye Driscoll, Niresh Drukeshkumar, Luke McMaster, Darcy Merlo, Archit Vora, Luke Gandy. - JARROD POTTER

Season fighters and flops By JARROD POTTER JOURNAL NEWS FOOTBALL PREVIEW KNOCKING on the door already is the return of south eastern football. With the Eastern, VAFA and Southern Football Leagues kicking off on 9 April, it’s time to look over the lists and figure out who will shine and which teams are sadly set to fade in the 2016 premiership race. EFL - DIVISION 1 NOBLE PARK COACH: Mick Fogarty INS: Mitch Gent, Will Petropolous, Sean Corrigan (Casey), Taylor Joyce, Tyson Mitchem (Beaconsfield), Adam Giobbi, Ben Giobbi, Ryan Morrison (Narre Warren), Jackson McDonald, Josh Docherty. OUT: Shane Valenti, Trent Cody, Josh Ferguson, Daniel Galante, Chris Horton-Milne, Marc Johnston, Daniel Keely, Jake Wilson, Jarryd Plymin, Luke Mann. COMMENTS: The ins certainly outweigh the outs. Mick Fogarty has loaded up the midfield with three from the VFL, including former Noble Park junior Will Petropoulos as well as up-andcomer Mitch Gent and a swathe of SEFNL pickups. Former club best and fairest Tyson Mitchem returns while the Giobbi brothers will add a lot to the wings and flanks. Add former Stingrays Taylor Joyce and Ryan Morrison at either end to give this side a ton of potential. Shane Valenti’s absence will be hard to fill - as proven in last year’s finals series - while Trent Cody is a big loss for the club’s midfield future. Nonetheless, Fogarty still has plenty to choose in pursuit of another EFL flag. VAFA - DIVISION 2 ST JOHN’S COACH: Ben McGee INS: Patrick Carr-Lehne, Guy Chuol, Brad Curry, Daniel Egan, Nathan Eres, Nicholas Silvey,

Steven Sullivan, Daniel Vine, Damien Wilsnach, Matthew Bennett. OUT: Aaron Abela, Emmanuel Jakwot, Carson Strobel. COMMENTS: Expect excitement out of Carroll Reserve this year with Ben Mcgee getting his fill of a promising list. After a swift finals exit in 2015, the JOCs are set to be lightning-fast. Matthew Bennett from VAFA Premier C is a nice addition to counter the loss of Carson Strobel for St John’s interior forces. Aaron Abela (Endeavour Hills) is going to coach at the SFL Division 3 side while Manny Jakwot, St John’s best home-grown product, is trying his hand at VFL for Casey. SFL - DIVISION 2 AND 3 KEYSBOROUGH COACH: Ryan Goodes INS: Dylan Carlsson, Jake Buenaventura, Shane Cudby, Shaun Haffenden, Darren Jameson, Kristopher Jameson, Clinton King, Brandon Mather, Damon Mccormack, Kasey Mobourne, Nicholas Spryidon, Steven Watson. OUTS: Travis Hyland, Mark Quiambao, Gerard Smith, Kiat Tut. COMMENTS: Injury cruelled Keysy’s hopes last year with Tyson King and Corey Wilkinson lost to knee injuries. After a straight sets exit last year, the Burra has loaded up with a lot of new faces and not too many departing the nest. Steve Watson is a premiership ruckman with Narre Warren and is a big addition to the tall department and keep an eye out for promising youngster Kasey Mobourne who made the Flying Boomerangs squad in recent years. The loss of coach Ryan Goodes to a long-term suspension, which is being appealed currently, will be difficult to fill until his return. DOVETON EAGLES COACH: Corrie Wilson INS: Peter Dye, Matthew O’Callaghan, Kaine Bundy, Mitchell Outlon, Troy Ross, Mark Tapscott, Josh Bevis, Nicholas Beer, Cameron Balsarini. OUT: Sean Paynter, Christian Sewell, Darryl Thomas, Jay Thompson, Troy Jordan, Cameron Holt. COMMENTS: Three big names stand out on transfers - returning premiership players Peter Dye, Matthew O’Callaghan and Kaine Bundy. Add to that a good mix of youth and experience and the Eagles seem ready to contend once again after a flat 2015. Darryl Thomas is a big out as is Sean Paynter but the ins certainly impress. Nicholas Beer was a gun junior with Endeavour Hills so watch out for what he can do in the SFL ranks. HALLAM COACH: Scott Slater INS: Gabriel Carrubba, Sean Cheery, Jed Dexter, Kamahl Dorling, Joshua Furborough, Timmothy Gavenlock, Gareth Hanley, Ethan Kantawara (NTFL), Johnathan King, Manny Peresso OUT: Beau Madden, Nathan Prosser, Gordon Walker, Aaron Werry, Cory Willshire. COMMENTS: Fair few ins for new coach Scott Slater to pick from. Timmothy Gavenlock has switched from Beaconsfield under-18s for a bigger run, Ethan Kantawara has NTFL experience, while former Narre Warren/Warragul Industrials midfielder Manny Peresso has also put his hand up for a short commute from his work as Hal-

Can they advance from sixth? Doveton’s Scott Dinsdale has made the switch and should take to SFL 3 like a house on fire. Journeyman David Vassallo has left for Moorabbin but otherwise it seems like the list has remained. Will the leaps be taken again this year? Time will tell.

City paves over Red Devils By JARROD POTTER NPL VICTORIA 2 EAST - ROUND 6 DANDENONG City broke open its clash against Ballarat Red Devils after persistent pressure started to pay off in the second half. It was level pegging entering the final halfhour as Dandenong City and Ballarat shared the early goals through Chris Antoniadis (39’, 91’) and Nelson Salvatore (60’). But Shaun Filopovic opened the game up in the 69th minute, taking on the defence and forcing a last-ditch attempt on the City midfielder from Ballarat Red Devils keeper Aaron Romein. The error sent Romein from the field with a red card and left Dario Matkovic (69’) to comfortably slot the penalty past junior keeper Ryan Schorback. City peppered the goals throughout the last 25 minutes against 10 men as Antoniadis added a second to his account after a couple of near misses while Ash Cattermole (78’) savoured a slice of the scoring as well to finish the rout 4-1. Against 10 and a young keeper the margin should’ve been more though; the skipper John Carroll had a header cleared off the line and Anthony Cassar’s simple shot at the far post dribbled out of bounds among a few other attempts that could have seen the margin skyrocket. With head coach Aaron Healey on holiday, stand-in coach Gerry McDonagh was pleased to see his charges take on the best that Ballarat could muster. “We knew Ballarat would come at us, and potentially cause some problems with the pace they had out wide and the pace they had throughout the midfield,” McDonagh said. “The drive by Shaun to get forward and recognise that ball was getting back to the keeper and actually get a touch to it and force the keeper into making an error. “We were able to play against 10 men - which is always nice when you’re ahead as it gives you an opportunity to knock the ball around in play and open them up.” McDonagh believed the earlier misses, when it was 11-on-11, coudl have been costly as City failed to push ahead despite a lot of chances. “We probably kept ourselves under pressure

for Souths - as did Hampton Park United Sparrows and Keysborough in a 1-1 draw. In the all Endeavour Hills start to the season, Endeavour Hills Fire carried on its strong FFA Cup qualifying rounds form to see off Endeavour United 3-2. David Schulberg cashed in twice for the Fire while Mathew Durand nailed the match-winner off the bench. Dandenong Warriors took to its State League 5 South debut with gusto against White Star Dandenong, making its entrance well known with a 6-4 goal-spree.

Dandenong City striker Dario Matkovic finished off Shaun Filipovic’s work with a clinical Pictures: JARROD POTTER penalty strike in the 4-1 victory over Ballarat. 152365 a little bit - especially at the start of the second half - we missed some opportunities,” McDonagh said. “Ashley’s header at the back post, Gonzalo (Freddi) gets one cleared off the line so we could’ve been two or three up but once again were still one each. “It was good to see that in the second part when we played against 10 men - when those opportunities arose we were able to finish off and come away with a strong result and a strong 1520 minutes to finish the game.” McDonagh thought Luke Burgess was strong at the back while Gonzalo Freddi’s up-front work rate was phenomenal alongside Filopovic and Antoniadis in the best afield. Things will only get better for City from here as it should see the return of striker Keegan Ziada for the upcoming clash against Kingston City

next Monday. Springvale White Eagles split the points with Sunshine George Cross after Jack Louziotis (90+1’) levelled the scores in the dying seconds. On Sunday afternoon, after the Journal went to print, Dandenong Thunder faced St Albans Saints away and in WNPL Southern United played Alamein SC. FFV STATE LEAGUES - SOUTH EAST AND SOUTH In the state leagues, South Springvale was rolled 0-2 by Malvern City while Noble Park United was outclassed by Doveton SC 1-3 as Stephen Begue (55’, 60’) and substitute Simba Saidi (70’) cleaned up. Dandenong South and Noble Park SC split the points 3-3 - with a Malik Sulemani hat-trick

A Dandy new SEABL era Stingrays relish road trip By JARROD POTTER

By JARROD POTTER

SEABL - ROUND 1 DANDENONG women got out of the blocks early to begin its next SEABL era. A high-scoring third term set the stage for the Rangers, in their first official clash under new coach Jeremi Moule, after Larissa Anderson left the post to focus on her WNBL coaching commitments. Two of Anderson’s great, all-year prospects Aimie Clydesdale (17 points, five assists) and Lauren Scherf (15 points, 13 rebounds) started the new season with a bang alongside up-and-comer Chloe Bibby and four-time SEABL champion Clare Papavs (16 points each). It was a tougher debut for the men on Saturday night, downed 77-86 by a surging AlburyWodonga, led by Donte Nicholas (24 points, 11 rebounds). The Rangers ground it out through the first half before an emphatic 25-9 third-term gave the hosts a five-point buffer at the final break. From there though the wheels fell off as Darren Perry’s charges couldn’t halt the Bandits’ raid. Liam Gibcus (11 points, 10 rebounds) started life in Dandenong with a double-double while Andrew Harms (21 points) led from the front. Also impresing were Owen Odigie (15 points, five rebounds), Chuck Long (eight points, 11 rebounds) and Mason Peatling (10 points, six rebounds). Dandenong hosts Brisbane on Saturday night.

TAC CUP - ROUND 2 STRONGER down the straight, Dandenong Stingrays surged in the second half to continue their unbeaten start to 2016. Even with Dandenong keen to get the monkey of its back and finally defeat North Ballarat, something it hasn’t achieved in recent outings, the match remained poised throughout the first half as neither team gained a major advantage. The trip to Bendigo - its second major road trip in as many weeks - didn’t faze the Rays in the third term though as they pumped it long through Bailey Morrish, Luke Dalmau and Tommy Glen. It was there for the taking as small forward Sam Fowler (three goals) continued his impressive start to life in the TAC Cup. The Dromana prospect has already impressed upon the coach with his speed and finishing ability in the forward half as his efforts pushed the lead out at the last break. On the other hand, the Rebels shot themselves in the foot with its inaccuracy, spraying 11 behinds to three-quarter-time in tandem with only four goals. Dandenong was able to brace itself defensively as well as Ryan Gains and Morrish locked up any chance North Ballarat had of mounting a come-back in the final term. “We never beat the Rebels in the last two years, so it was pleasing to beat them today and they’re a great team,” Dandenong coach Craig Black said. “First quarter might’ve come in and we thought it was pretty even - but the first half reflected that as it was a fairly even game. “But in the third quarter we were lucky enough to break away and had a three-goal lead at three-quarter-time and managed to hold on and win from there. The win was made sweeter with Dandenong getting it done without star tandem Josh Battle and Myles Poholke, who were unavailable due to the AFL Academy clash on Friday night. Keysborough started strongly with a 28-point opening term - led by monster matches from Ben Morwood (24 points, 11 rebounds) and David Smith (19 points, five rebounds). But no matter what the Cougars did, they couldn’t break the Gulls. Corey Standerfer (28 points, 18 rebounds) was almighty at both ends. Keysborough’s star recruit Calvin Enge (nine points)

was kept to 11 minutes with foul trouble as the Cougars had to make do on Standerfer without the SEABL champion. In a frenzied last few minutes, Keysborough managed to hold on and show its credentials in its inaugural Division 1 campaign. The women had a harder time against Melbourne University, downed 40-50 as Sarah Collins (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Tamara Matecic (nine points, 12 rebounds) did it all at both ends alongside Katie O’Neill (10 points, eight rebounds).

lie Martello and Nathan Scagliarini came into the side for their TAC Cup debuts and held their own in the 30-point victory. But the coach was most pleased with Fowler and thought it was a just reward for the 17-yearold to fight his way into the Stingrays squad after missing out in 2015. “It’s good for him and goes to show - he wasn’t in our program last year but it is reward for effort,” Black said. “For people who are still playing local footy, if they’re playing well locally we’ll definitely take notice and they’ll make their way into the program eventually.” Sitting on equal points with Murray Bushrangers atop the ladder, the TAC Cup has a bye this weekend for the Vic Country and Vic Metro trial matches. It leaves Dandenong with a couple of weeks to rest up before its clash against Bendigo at home on 16 April. “We wanted to win the first game and a focus on really running hard throughout today as they had the week off,” Black said. “So we’ll just reset and got Bendigo at home in two weeks and they had a really good win against Gippsland. “We’ll have a few changes again and a few people be available and hopefully the boys are up for the challenge again in two weeks time.” TAC CUP SCOREBOARD NORTH BALLARAT 2.5 4.6 4.11 5.11 (41) DANDENONG 2.2 6.5 9.7 10.11 (71) NORTH BALLARAT Goals: I. MOTORING

Lexus luxury to new level By DEREK OGDEN THE Lexus IS 200t is a success on many levels. Pricewise it’s positioned between the upper medium passenger sedan and lower premium car market and it performs like a luxury sedan or a spritely sports coupe depending on how the driver sets up the controls. Finally, the IS 200t offers a level of comfort and convenience normally found in vehicles positioned well into the luxury car market. A replacement for the IS 250, sharp prices characterise the IS 200t range which consists of three variants - Luxury, F Sport and Sports Luxury, coming to the market at $64,041, $73,055 and $84,385 respectively, on the road. One of two comprehensive Enhancement Packs can be added to the Luxury and F Sport models with a corresponding cost increase. The test vehicle, for example, the IS 200t Luxury, included the Enhancement Pack 1, which adds an electric tilt and slide moonroof, upping the price to $66,870 on the road. Lexus throws down the gauntlet to rivals with the IS 200t bringing a stack of standard luxury features including pre-collision safety, active cruise control, reversing alarm, rain-sensing wipers and power adjustable steering column. The new Lexus IS models feature a continuation of the classic IS lines sporty yet stylishly laid back.

MODEL RANGE Lexus IS 200t Luxury automatic sedan: $64,041 Lexus IS 200t Luxury + Enhancement Pack: $66,870 Lexus IS 200t F Sport automatic sedan: $73,055 Lexus IS 200t F Sport + Enhancement Pack 1: $77,176 Lexus IS 200t F Sport + Enhancement Pack 2: $79,235 Lexus IS Sport Luxury automatic sedan: $84,385

Familiar look but Lexus sporty sedan comes with hidden advantages. The signature Lexus spindle grille has evolved with a three-dimensional design and a chrome-plated frame and darker grey insert from top to bottom. Front-on the view is complemented with Bi Xenon HID low/high beam headlamps with LED daytime running lamps. In profile, the car is characterised by a line which takes off to match

those of the rear taillight unit. The rear, once again, has a wide, sporty stance, emphasised by a trapezoidal design beginning between the inner section of the tail light units and flaring out towards the side sections of the bumper. The driver-oriented cockpit design was inspired by that of the Lexus LFA supercar with the dashboard divided

into a display zone and an operation zone to offer drivers more comfortable, ergonomic interaction with the vehicle's control systems. Soft-touch finishes can be found throughout, including padding on the centre console sides, while a piece of premium automotive embellishment is the silver metallic trim analogue clock with surface self illumination.

Generous 480 litre boot space is greatly enhanced by standard 60:40 split-folding rear seats. The touch-sensitive Lexus Remote Touch controller is positioned close at hand on the centre console and is the contact with many of the IS 200t convenience systems including satellite navigation and reversing camera. Under normal circumstances the test vehicle consumed 12 to13 litres per 100 kilometres on a day-to-day city commute and 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres at motorway speeds.
