■‘Ticking’ case brings Cranbourne to a standstill ...
‘Bomb’ stops street By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A LOCAL grandmother’s find of an abandoned case in front of Cranbourne Centrelink brought the town to a standstill for three hours on Tuesday. Annette Togni, 68, was the first person to notice the small case in the gutter, outside Cranbourne Centrelink and Medicare on Tuesday 6 April. But more alarmingly, Ms Togni was the first person to hear a “ticking sound coming from the package. Now terrified to return to the scene on Codrington Street, Ms Togni’s pregnant granddaughter Martine Regan, also an eyewitness, has told of the dramatic discovery. “My Nan almost stood on it as she got out of the car, and she immediately yelled “What is that, is that a bomb? The pair from Cranbourne North alerted nearby security guards to the strange item, Ms Regan described as a fishing tackle box. “It was grey and navy blue and had a yellow handle, it kind of looked like a car battery and it was ticking loud enough for my Nan and I to hear it, Ms Regan said. “The guard just said that he wasn’t sure what it was, he said he saw someone drop it off. “My Nan asked if it was safe for us and all the people lined up inside Centrelink to be here, there were children, pregnant women like myself and elderly and he replied, ‘I don’t know, madam’.
Disgusted at the slow speed of the guards to act on the issue, a panicked Ms Regan and Ms Togni drove to Narre Warren Centrelink. “I didn’t want to risk it, I want to meet my son and hold him in my arms, Ms Regan said. “My Nan was very frightened; she was distraught and started crying, if it was a bomb there was no way we would have survived it if it went off. “The Centrelink guards were extremely unprofessional, they didn’t clear the area, and they didn’t notify anyone – we definitely won’t be going back to that branch, my Nan is still cut up about it. Cranbourne Senior Sergeant Daniel Baynes gave the scene the all clear at 1.15pm after more than two hours of assessment from the bomb squad, who used a robot to approach the locked case. At the scene, Sen Sgt Baynes told Star News the contents of the case were “personal belongings. He has since confirmed it was a first aid kit. “There might have been a phone charger in it as well, no-one at this point has come forward and claimed it. Close to 100 staff from Centrelink and neighbouring firm, Waters Lawyers, were evacuated and police cordoned off Codrington Street between Sladen and Childers streets. Still tormented by the experience, Ms Regan said her Nan was so petrified, she wouldn’t go out and collect the mail.
Martine Regan and her Nan, Annette Togni, were the first to notify nearby security guards of the suspicious case. Picture: CONTRIBUTED
Once the contents had been given the all-clear, the officer retrieved it.
Left: Eight police officers from Cranbourne kept locals at a distance. A bomb squad officer, suited up on his way to assess the scene outside Centrelink Cranbourne.
Right: The bomb squad used a robot to pick up what looked like a fishing tackle box.

Lonely bank closes By GEORGIA WESTGARTH THE only bank in Lynbrook, ANZ, is shutting its doors due to a huge drop in foot traffic, and disgruntled customers have called on the Bendigo Bank to fill its hole in the community. Casey councillor Wayne Smith, also a Lynbrook resident, said, “people are disappointed”. “Many Lynbrook residents changed their banks to go to ANZ because it was local, and there’s no other bank branch in Lynbrook,” Cr Smith said. ANZ customer Yvonne Tisdale
wrote to the Lynbrook Social Page on Facebook: “Well, now our only bank in Lynbrook is closing, we moved to ANZ because it was local, might have to go to Bendigo Bank as they give back to the community.” An ANZ spokesperson attributed the closure to more than an 18 per cent drop in daily transactions over the past year. “It has not been an easy decision to close our Lynbrook branch, and we apologise to our customers for any inconvenience it may cause,” they said. “We have written to our customers to let them know the branch will
close from 27 April, when they can visit us at our Hampton Park branch about 2km away.” But Cr Smith said it was not that easy. “Hampton Park is not easy to get to without your own transport and it’s about convenience and shopping local,” Cr Smith said. “I know there’s a group of residents trying to get Bendigo Bank into Lynbrook, there has been contact made and initial discussions with the Bendigo Bank Carrum Downs branch.” In a statement an ANZ spokesperson said online banking has also
played a part in the demise of the Lynbrook branch. “We have seen an increase in customers using digital channels to bank such as our mobile banking app, goMoney or internet banking,” they said. “We are currently looking at options to leave our ATM in Lynbrook either at its current location or a different one.” ANZ Lynbrook advises customers can use a Bank@Post located at 75 Lynbrook Boulevard in Lynbrook which will offer deposits, withdrawals and payments for customers using ANZ debit or credit cards.
Intruders leave an almighty mess POLICE are investigating after intruders broke into a Cranbourne house and doused the rooms in talcum powder and cleaning liquids. It’s believed the intruders forced their way into the Dearing Avenue home sometime between 3pm on Sunday 27 March and 5pm on Friday 1 April. Nothing was stolen during the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or make a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
Church ransacked, nothing stolen THE Cranbourne Uniting Church was ransacked late last month, but nothing was stolen. Someone forced their way into the Lesdon Avenue church and rummaged through the internal rooms, including an office, sometime between 5.30pm on Wednesday 30 March and 10am on Thursday 31 March. Minor damage was caused to the church, but nothing was stolen. It’s believed the intruder was most likely inside the church about 5am on 31 March, as that’s when a neighbour’s dog was heard barking. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or make a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

After the salesman started the car and then lifted up the bonnet, the customer walked past him into the driver’s seat and sped off. Mr Favaloro said the car had still not been found. “Someone has to have balls to come here in broad daylight, jump into someone else’s car and take off with it,” he said.
“It’s not unheard of but you never think you will have that customer that does it. “It’s just frustrating ... we’re a small, independent business.” Mr Favaloro said he was aware of a similar theft occurring at a Cranbourne dealership, but that car had apparently been recovered. POLICE are investigating a series of car thefts from dealerships in Casey and Dandenong, in which a thief purporting to be a customer ends up driving off in the cars. Police confirmed they are looking into a number of car thefts from used and new car dealerships in the Berwick, Kingston, Bayside and Frankston areas. Star News has spoken to the owner of a Dandenong dealership,
who had a car stolen from his lot, and who is also aware of similar crimes occurring at a Cranbourne dealership. While some of the cars have been recovered by police, several others are still missing. Melbourne Online Motors owner Norman Favaloro was away from his car lot in Dandenong’s Lonsdale Street last Wednesday 30 March when a customer came in to inspect a car. The customer was interested in

Serious money spent on play By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A NEW playground will soon be built in Casey, while council is also planning the refurbishment of three others. Casey Council is set to build a new local level playground at Sambur Road Reserve in Tooradin, and will also revamp the existing playgrounds at Cairns Road Reserve in Hampton Park, Timbertop Reserve in Berwick, and one on the Tooradin foreshore. “The City of Casey effectively plans for existing and future playground sites within the municipality to ensure that they continue to reflect the needs and interests of local families,” Casey mayor Sam Aziz said. “The council consulted with
nearby residents at each site on the kind of features they would like included in their playgrounds and their feedback has been incorporated into the final designs.” Sambur Road Reserve will be home to a new $80,000 playground which will include a fort with different slides, rock walls and swings. Meanwhile Casey Council will also invest $480,000 to refurbish the three existing district level playgrounds, with $160,000 going into each site. The Cairns Road Reserve Playground will consist of two separate areas with balancing and climbing elements, different slides and swings and shade sails. The Timbertop Reserve
Playground will resemble a kid’s cubby, including a fiveseat satellite swing and a tornado basket swing, while the Tooradin Foreshore Playground will have a coastal theme which consists of a large lighthouse structure built on three levels. “Signs have been erected at each of the sites showcasing the plans of the new look playgrounds and their features, so I encourage residents to check them out,” Cr Aziz said. The council has released design photos of the Sambur Road Reserve and Cairns Road Reserve playgrounds. Hope for new hub A LOCAL family violence ambassador hopes Casey will be one of the locations for a one-stop safety hub, recommended in the 1900-page report released by the Royal Commission into Family Violence. After 13 months of interviews the report was officially released on Wednesday 30 March, with the State Government promising to implement all 227 recommendations. Among the recommendations was the proposal to set up one-stop safety hubs, facilities installed throughout the state so victims can find information and services in their local area. Challenge Family Violence ambassador Jim Reiher, also a member of the Casey Multifaith network, said he hoped Casey would be selected for one of the hub locations. The City of Casey has previously been ranked as the municipality with the highest number of family violence incidents. From April 2014 to March 2015 there were 3759 family incidents reported in Casey compared to 3636 in the same period a year earlier - the most of any local government area. “I hope we might be one of the hubs, you’d hope they target areas that have the highest percentage of reported issues,” Mr Reiher said. Other key recommendations in the report included the proposal of new victim safety laws, a rehousing program for victims, the call for more family violence courts, the proposal of an independent Family Violence Agency to hold governments to account, as well a focus on responses from local councils. “The report looks really
good, it’s really important, really timely and definitely needed,” Mr Reiher said. “The report admits some progress has been made and there’s more to be done. “As a White Ribbon ambassador I’m very pleased that this has come out.” The Casey Multifaith network is also referenced in the report, after entering a submission to the Royal Commission. “We have felt that faith communities often don’t want to be associated with issues related to family violence for fear of stigma or other such apprehensions,” the Casey Multifaith network submitted. “We have often found that faith communities want to brush such issues as family violence under the carpet and either do not want to deal with the problems, or want to hide them.” Following the report’s release, Premier Daniel Andrews said the Victorian Government would implement “every single one” of the recommendations. “Last year 37 Victorians were murdered by the people they trusted the most, and we failed every single one of them,” he said. “Family violence is a silent crime, deployed by cowards behind closed doors. “It’s Australia’s number one law-and-order issue but it’s taken us too long to admit it. “The numbers are staggering. The human cost - unacceptable. “And one thing’s for certain, more of the same policies will only mean more of the same tragedies.” If you need help contact Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre on 1800 015 188, or go to www.safesteps. org.au

Kurt’s career is right on cue A PASSION handed down from his father will have Kurt Dunham travelling the world as a professional snooker player. Kurt, from Lynbrook, has been lining up shots under the watchful eye of his old man, Rod Dunham, since he was eight years old. “Dad has played in national championships for Victoria and Tasmania - he’s been like my coach,” Kurt said.
Kurt was handed a two year tour card after winning the 2016 Oceania Snooker Championship in Sydney and will leave for Cambridge, England to start his professional career in May. The 24-year-old will be one of 128 snooker professionals in the world. “It’s cutthroat,” he said. “But it was always my dream growing up, but it’s not very big in Australia and it’s
hard to get sponsorship.” In the lead-up to his first tournament in late May, Kurt will be practicing five to six hours a day. “I might look at getting a coach once I’m over there - I’m most excited about the atmosphere and the professionalism, they have purpose-built stadiums and live audiences of a couple thousand,” he said. “I may even get on Fox Sports in Australia.”

Barking up the wrong tree COMPLAINT Registered (Cranbourne News, 31 March 2016) suggests council has increased animal registrations by stealth. This is certainly not the case, with the fee increase being considered at a public council meeting on 15 December 2015. Council provides services for the 31,700 dogs and 8700 cats who reside in the municipality, including delivering pound services, collecting lost and wandering pets, investigating and prosecuting dog attacks and animal cruelty, providing microchipping days and maintaining animal welfare standards. The costs of delivering animal management services continue to increase so it has been necessary to raise the cost of animal registration by an average of 13 per cent in 2016. It is also worth noting that part of the registration fee is a levy that council collects on behalf of the State Government. Cr Sam Aziz, City of Casey Mayor.

APRIL foolishness hit the City of Casey on Friday, and it heated up on Facebook. A message which fooled some has been posted around Casey social pages, congratulating the council “on responding once again to community concerns”. The script posted numerous times read: “Just got an email from Casey council letting me know that due to popular request, all
Casey public pools will have three lanes of water at 30C for those who prefer a warmer environment. “The temperature in the other lanes will remain unchanged. Congratulations Casey council on responding once again to community concerns....” But the message ringing loud and clear from the council chambers is ... we got pranked.
Councillor Damien Rosario got on board commenting: “Yup. We do a lot of planning to ensure that we have a warm lane for you guys. “Don’t say we don’t give you anything.” The funny prank started a surge of comments about the warm up online, one resident said: “Will they be cooler at the ends so you can ease your way into the warm area?”

Cran-boom: many more moving in By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE East is Australia’s largest growing suburb. Australian Bureau of Statistics show the established region expanded by 88 people per week last financial year. Cranbourne East resident of five years and O’Brien Real Estate agent Mina Saad said he was not surprised. “It’s like a city of its own ... the market is pretty stable, houses are a year to 12 years old, and its value for money you can’t beat,” Mr Saad said.
“Cranbourne East has all the amenities around it you need, if you live in Cranbourne East you don’t have to go anywhere else and its expanding on top of that.” The area is home to some of the region’s most popular estates including the Hunt Club, with its own shopping village and childcare centre. “Every new estate in Cranbourne East has its own shopping centre and I honestly don’t think it needs any more infrastructure, it’s got all it could possibly need,” Mr Saad said.
The data revealed the number of people living on Melbourne’s fringe is growing at a rate faster than the rest of the nation. However Mr Saad said the desirable large blocks of land were gradually becoming harder to find. “Areas like the Hunt Club and Cascades on Clyde have the biggest blocks and Mayfield Living and Livingston toward Selandra Rise are mostly around 300 to 400 square metres,” Mr Saad said.

CASEY is Victoria’s largest municipality, and its mayor wants to see the State and Federal governments work together to expedite infrastructure funds. Mayor Sam Aziz is calling for a partnership to address “the infrastructure back log”, and it comes off the back of Australian Bureau of Statistics, figures revealing Cranbourne East as the nation’s fastest growing suburb. “With nearly 300,000 residents, Casey is the largest municipality in Victoria,” Cr Aziz said. “By 2041 Casey will be home to 490,000 residents, that’s the equivalent of two times the capacity of the MCG over the next 25 years. And it’s the region’s inabil-
ity to cater for its sporting clubs that’s got Cr Aziz crunching numbers. “Casey’s leisure and sporting needs alone will require an additional $446 million of infrastructure investment over the next 20 years,” he said. Cr Aziz said the Victorian Government’s rate cap would put strain on growth areas such as Casey. “Council’s financial modelling shows the Victorian Government’s imposed rate cap will leave a $168 million shortfall over the next 10 years in Casey,” he said. The City of Casey has applied to the Essential Services Commission for a rate cap variation of 0.97 per cent, or $14 per household.
Cr Aziz said a “rate variation is the most responsible action in order to shield the community from a future infrastructure black hole and service level cuts.” “We consulted our community late last year, and while we acknowledge that most residents prefer council work within the rate cap, taking the easy route and accepting the rate cap will start a snowball effect of vital community projects being delayed or even abandoned. “A little bit extra now, in a planned, sustainable way, will cost ratepayers less than big hikes down the track when it gets to crisis point, or worse, even having some essential community infrastructure delayed for a generation or not provided at all.”

TALENTED artists from Casey and Cardinia were on show last month. Many guests attended the Casey-Cardinia Grand Art and Woodart Exhbition in late March, where a vast array of artworks was on show. Casey-Cardinia Grand Art Show featured a fine selection of art from leading artists not only from Victoria, but also New South Wales and Tasmania. The Berwick District woodworkers club also displayed creative wood art from across Victoria, including several large rocking horses. Pakenham artist Elena Kolotusha won an $800 prize for her drawing, Soul Hunter, which depicted a greyhound gazing up at an airborne paper crane, incorporating a combination of colour pencils and pastels. Kolotusha now faces months of intense work as she prepares for a solo exhibition in August at AGRA Gallery, Camberwell.

ten With Sharon Start, concert co-ordinator at Cranbourne West Primary School 1. What is something people don’t know about you? Most people don’t know that I teach Auslan (sign language), I do voluntary work in addition to full time employment, I play a variety of ukuleles in a band and I am a keen amateur photographer. 2. What was your most memorable moment?
Getting married, the birth of my three sons, my eldest son’s wedding, singing I Still Call Australia Home on the Great Wall of China, singing at the RVIB Carols by Candlelight and meeting Jonathan Welch from the Choir of Hard Knocks. 3. What would your last meal be? Home cooked roast with veggies and gravy plus a homemade dessert such as apple crumble with custard. You can’t beat home cooked meals for nutrition and satisfaction. 4. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? The discovery of a cure for cancer. 5. What is your favourite television show? Any documentary especially by David Attenborough, Escape to the Country for the scenery and RuPaul’s Drag Race. As a child I loved The Brady Bunch, Gilligan’s
Island and Young Talent Time. 6. What is your favourite book? Autobiographies, crossword puzzles and music books. 7. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? The Seekers plus John Farnham and Olivia Newton John as we have music in common and, hopefully, we would have a jam session afterwards. 8. What has been your most embarrassing moment? As a child was wetting my pants in Prep and as an adult I don’t get embarrassed very easily now. 9. What era would you like to live in? The 60s/70s for the music, fashion and slower paced lifestyle however medical technology is much better in this era and that is important to me and my family. 10. What was your first or best concert? My first concert was Donny Osmond when I was 21 however I really enjoyed The Seekers last year and Georgy Girl this year. The Pirates of Penzance with John English and Simon Gallagher a few years ago were also fantastic.

We make it MANUFACTURING may be on the wane in many parts of Victoria, but it continues to be the powerhouse which is driving the economic health of the Casey Cardinia region. The manufacturing sector is put under the microscope in the second edition of business magazine Grow, a joint venture between the City of Casey, Cardinia Shire and Star News Group. The April issue looks at why manufacturing firms continue to succeed in the Casey Cardinia region and looks ahead to the boom many in the industry predict. Business director of Berwick component manufacturer Australian Precision Technologies Ron Weinzierl predicts “exciting times ahead“ for the region. Read Mr Weinzierl’s thoughtful analysis of the future of manufacturing in the region, a view echoed by Casey Cardinia Business Group chair Ian Ash. In an exclusive Q&A with Grow, Mr Ash says the region is on the cusp of a growth spurt. “I don’t think we have reached anywhere near to where wer are going to be,” Mr Ash told Grow. “The best is yet to come - by far.” The magazine also profiles Pakenham based business Hero HQ which is revolutionising the training industry and visits Cranbourne-based Silk Education, which is equipping young people with skills to succeed in

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Try your hand at careers THE South East Try-a-Trade and Careers Expo helps answer the age-old question - what do you want to be when you grow up? The special annual careers expo will take place on Tuesday 19 April at the Cranbourne Racing Complex, with thousands of eager young people expected to turn out to the event. The exhibition is organised by the South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN), supported by several sponsors including the Casey Cardinia Region and Star News Group. It aims to provide more local job opportunities for young people. More than 2000 students are expected at this month’s event, which will be the eighth annual Try-a-Trade. “It’s one of the big flagship events for the region when it comes to careers,” SELLEN CEO Andrew Simmons said. Trades on display include carpentry, plumbing, tiling, bricklaying, painting, hair and beauty, engineering and many others. In addition to hands-on practical components at the expo, the event also allows students the opportunity to talk to qualified tradespeople and career advisers about the different occupations and pathways available. “It’s an opportunity for young people to have a look at and actually get their hands dirty,” Mr Simmons said. “If they’re thinking about being a bricklayer, they can talk to brick layers and come and lay some bricks.” Mr Simmons said there would 70 different trade and career options to choose from at the expo. “Come on down and explore your

Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said the expo was an opportunity for recent graduates to “discover some of the career paths available to them”.
“The expo is an opportunity to learn from industry experts and get some practical insight to different occupations, with hands-on displays for people to try out,” he said.
“From graphic design to hairdressing to building, the expo brings together a variety of industries and occupations to help young people plan for an exciting future.”

Lowdown on Silk degrees By GEORGIA WESTGARTH
Above: Trainer, Cary Burnett with student Layne in the Cranbourne commercial kitchen. 151377 Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS Left: Training Manager, Georgina Hamilton. 151377
A PROGRESSIVE and new culinary learning centre, Silk Education and Training, is building industry-ready chefs, bakers, kitchen hands and entrepreneurs from its Cranbourne hub. The vocational education and training centre has been operating from the Cranbourne commercial kitchen for almost 12 months. Offering an extensive range of certificates from commercial cookery to hospitality, Silk also provides day courses for immediate entry level jobs. Silk training manager Georgina Hamilton said locals were able to book in for accredited and non-accredited courses. “We run a one day food handling course and first aid course, as well as skills courses like latte art, cupcake making and food plating which aren’t accredited,” Georgina said. But it’s Silk’s ability to offer adaptable courses with highly skilled professional trainers that sets it apart. “All of our trainers are current in the industry, they eat, breath and sleep hospitality and some still work in the industry outside of their teaching,“ she said. “This means once our students graduate, they have current skills and knowledge that can be applied immediately.
“Our trainers are very adaptable and able to tailor classes to meet the needs of their students and a lot of out our students already work in the industry and come to us to grow their skills in a certain area.” Silk’s state of the art Cranbourne kitchen is its latest to open in Melbourne, with facilities also available in North Melbourne and a soon to open training kitchen in South Melbourne. With 800 students across the state, Cranbourne currently has around 100 students listed but Georgina hopes that number will grow. “We have trainees aged from 18 to 60 and we hold 16 students in each class, so they are nice and small,” she said. “Silk has been around for five years, we are very young and taking the industry by storm in hospitality training.” The organisation also has access to offshore kitchens and puts their students through on the job experience in Melbourne restaurants, cafes and hospitality establishments. But it’s their “feel good” work which Ms Hamilton holds dear. “We ran a course for disadvantaged people in India, they came from villages to Deli and received Silk training in hospitality, before the course was finished some had landed jobs in hotels.”

GOLF DAY SWINGS INTO SUPPORT THE Oli E Foundation and O’Brien Real Estate held their annual charity golf day on Friday 18 March at the Sandhurst Golf Club. A total of 152 players, many from local businesses, braved the weather conditions in support of the worthwhile charity. Volkswagen Berwick staff were alongside O’Brien Real Estate as the major sponsors of the day. O’Brien Real Estate is proud to support such a heartfelt charity in the Oli E foundation and is thrilled to announce the group’s contribution of $85,470 over the past year towards the foundation that assists families in need. The company believes that having a child with special needs places families under enough stress, let alone the associated financial burden that accompanies treating such conditions. The Oli E Foundation was established in 2009 with the aim of supporting a young
eight-year-old girl, Olivia Evans, who suffers from cerebral palsy. There was an identified need to assist Olivia and her family in taking up the fight in treating her debilitating condition.

CHARITY HOME AUCTION FOR ROYAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL GOOD Friday turned great when Villawood Properties teamed up with Henley Properties yet again to auction a home at its Trillium community in Mickleham, with all proceeds going to the Royal Children’s Hospital as part of the Good Friday Appeal. It was another fantastic day with a large crowd turning out for an exciting auction which saw the beautiful Henley home eventually sold to the Elsikmani family for $663,000. They were ecstatic to have purchased such a great home for their growing family and even more pleased that the purchase
would help support the great work undertaken at the hospital. It brings to approximately $4.4 million the amount raised for the hospital through this initiative since Villawood Properties became involved seven years ago. This magnificent community event is Villawood’s largest single philanthropic initiative and the fact that it supports such a worthy cause which resonates with so many staff makes it even more special. The video of the auction is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dDdw7D1Ek
Charity Home auctioneer Christian Bartley.
Successful bidder Joe and Houda Elsikmani with their son Noah, Villawood Properties Executive Director Rory Costelloe, Nicole Nightingale from Henley and My Kitchen Rules stars.

Lightning set to strike By JARROD POTTER EVERYTHING is in place for the Lightning’s first strike. Lyndhurst has done everything it could in the inaugural pre-season to attract the numbers and with 70 on the list, it makes for a couple of sides in its Southern Football League debut. Brad Ferri and Jake Ward will lead the side into 2016 and Lyndhurst coach Paddy Cooke said their impact throughout the pre-season made them obvious choices for the top mantle. “Both go about it slightly different with the way they approach it but both are great leaders,” Cooke said. “Both really put themselves into the position and from our whole group those two were stand-
outs for their leadership qualities.” Where that core group can take the Lightning in 2016 remains up for debate, though, because the list is fresh to football or, at the very least, light on for true experience. “It’s definitely going to be a challenging season, it really is,” Cooke said. “Hopefully we can surprise a few sides and be competitive but where that competitiveness goes, only time will tell. “I think we can surprise a few but we’re not expecting it to be easy and we know there’s a lot of hard work ahead for us. “We’ve done all the preparation we can to put ourselves in a good spot and I guess what happens, happens. “We don’t know too much
about the opposition so we’ve just got to worry about our own structures and set-ups and if we can stick to all our things it can pay off for us.” From its three practice matches, Lyndhurst was put to the sword by Templestowe but fared much better against South Mornington to round out its summer schedule. It all starts with a local showdown as the Lightning battles regional rivals Hallam in its inaugural SFL Division 3 clash on Saturday from 2pm at Marriott Waters Reserve, Lyndhurst. Battle for WGCA’s top medal By DAVID NAGEL CARDINIA champion Dwayne Doig and Pakenham’s gun all-rounder Chris Smith look set for a thrilling battle when the Terry Stephenson Medal count takes place at the Kooweerup Community Centre on Friday night. Doig’s mesmerising off-spin claimed an incredible 50 wickets for the season while Smith’s 786 runs were accompanied by 23 scalps. Smith will look to join his Pakenham premiershipwinning team-mate Russell Lehman as a Terry Stephenson Medallist, with Lehman the current holder of the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s top-individual prize. Other likely contenders include Merinda Park’s Danny Diwell, Upper Beaconsfield’s Scott Pitcher, Kooweerup’s Jess Mathers and Tooradin’s Tom Hussey. In great news for the WGCA, former Kooweerup youngster and now Dandenong quick Adam McMaster claimed Cricket Victoria’s Future Star Award at last Friday night’s awards at Eureka 89. McMaster claimed 29 wickets in the state’s elite cricket competition, Vic Premier Cricket.
VFL SEASON PREVIEW CELEBRATING 10 years at Casey Fields this season, the Casey Scorpions will one way or another look quite different in its milestone VFL campaign. Since its switch from Springvale in 2006, the Scorpions have had plenty of near-misses and close calls in the finals race, including the minor premiership in 2012. In season 10 the Scorpions have lost plenty of its VFL-listed experience over the off-season as former captain Evan Panozza, vice-captain Mitch Gent, Will Petropoulos and Sean Corrigan have left Casey Fields. In their place will be former Gold Coast Sun Jack Hutchins, the 2016 captain, alongside Tim Smith (vice-captain), Bryce Rutherford, Eddie Morris and James Munro in the leadership group. While the VFL list is missing the extra level of experience, Melbourne’s list looking its strongest in years and Casey coach Justin Plapp is the main beneficiary of Paul Roos’ recruiting hard yards. Even though last year’s tall timber Max Gawn, who has established himself as Melbourne’s number one ruckman, and Jack Fitzpatrick, traded to Hawthorn, are also big absences from Casey’s 2015 ranks, the Demons’ depth will fill the coffers at Casey. Christian Petracca, Jack Grimes, Lynden Dunn, Jack Trengove, Viv Michie, Alex Neal-Bullen among others should feature in the Scorpions line-up at times throughout the year – giving plenty for the Casey faithful to cheer about. Casey Scorpions general manager Matthew Young thinks while the ins and outs will dictate a lot, it still boils down to injuries from either the AFL or VFL side.
Melbourne’s father-son basketball convert Joel Smith, son of highflying Shaun, is one of many Demons who will feature prominently Picture: JARROD POTTER in Casey’s 2016 VFL campaign. 152363 Jack Hutchins has been named Casey captain for 2016. 152363 Picture: JARROD POTTER “The Melbourne list a lot stronger from the bottom end – lot of good kids – but from our point of view it will be about injuries,” Young said. “We’ll probably struggle, so player welfare and management will be crucial. If we have our best core group in week-in weekout, we should be competitive. “Coach is really confident that we’ll have a good year and with all clubs, it revolves around injuries and the pre-season form has been really good – especially the last couple of games.” Beaconsfield tandem Damien and Daniel Johnson have switched from SEFNL to the VFL this year and look likely to feature in the seniors, as will up-and-coming Neerim Neerim South prospect Kody Wilson who has got inside duties written all over him.
“Kody Wilson – inside mid and we think he’ll be a replacement for Mitch Gent,” Young said. “Came last year for us from the Ellinbank comp – played all the practice games in seniors and performed pretty well. “Got to go through selection, but should feature in the squad for round one. “The Johnson boys from Beacy ... come back after a stint at Beacy and premiership players who should play a bit for us as mature age players.” The likes from the TAC Cup as well – James Freeman, Jake Lovett, Jake Di Pasquale, Lachie Batten, Aloysio Ferreira among others – should make the grade as well and add a bit of young spark to the Scorpions. In their last practice match before the season start, Casey surged to roll Box Hill 18.7 (115) to 13.8 (86) to finish its pre-season on the best possible note.
Not missing a beat, Christian Petracca showed why he’s a top-draft pick as he blitzed it against Box Hill through the midfield and across the flanks. He should feature in a few more Scorpions games at least before he likely makes his way into the AFL ranks. Also impressing from the AFL side of the list were Neal-Bullen (36 disposals), Jayden Hunt (23) and another Demon returning from injury Trengove (22). Tim Smith was a powerful presence in the Scorpions’ forward line and will be tapped on the shoulder to burden the side’s scoring alongside the myriad of Demons’ up-andcomers. But that’s all in the past now, preseason is done and dusted as Casey starts its 2016 campaign under lights at Casey Fields on Saturday, battling Frankston in a Round 1 night-time showdown from 7pm.

Cavs in blitzing form By JARROD POTTER BIG V - ROUND 2 THE local rivalry continued to be bruise-free for Casey with a comfortable 69-46 win over Pakenham. The Cavaliers women continued their clean-sweep over the young Warriors as everyone took their fair share of the stats. A 26-4 first term set the stage for women’s coach Michael Davies to rest his best and give the bench more opportunity as Ruchelle McCracken (16 points, nine rebounds), Tarryn Wilkin (11 points, 15 rebounds) and Bec Magdich (10 points, six rebounds) got it done from around 20 minutes apiece. Cassie Bridge (seven points) made her return from a season off - on maternity leave - to notch her first points since 2014 to continue Casey’s celebrations. If anything the score line is on the low-side for Casey as it only hit 27-on-81 from the field, but nonetheless all around The Fortress will be pleased to take the strong victory to start its Division 2 campaign properly. The Cavaliers’ perfect start has them second behind Melbourne University before hosting the down-on-their-luck Sherbrooke Suns on Sunday afternoon from 12.30pm. Casey’s men had to work for their points however; snaring a 68-66 triumph over Melbourne University to continue the closely combative start to 2016.

Ruchelle McCracken had a field day early against Pakenham in Casey's 23-point triumph. 152335 Picture: ROB CAREW The Cavaliers built a solid lead by three-quarter-time, but the Black Angels didn’t fade, leaving the injury-affected line-up to hold on. SEABL experienced trio Mitch Chapman (16 points, five rebounds), Matt Witherden (12 points, 13 rebounds) and Ben Louis (12
points, seven rebounds) were brilliant down the stretch to bring the Cavaliers back to .500 after two rounds. Casey’s men travel to Warrandyte on Saturday night and the juniors are traveling to Corio Bay on Sunday.

NPL VICTORIA 2 EAST - ROUND 6 DANDENONG City broke open its clash against Ballarat Red Devils after persistent pressure started to pay off in the second half. It was level pegging entering the final halfhour as the Endeavour Hills-based NPL 2 side and Ballarat shared the goals through Chris Antoniadis (39’, 91’) and Nelson Salvatore (60’). But Shaun Filopovic opened the game up in the 69th minute, taking on the defence and forcing a last-ditch attempt on the City midfielder from Ballarat Red Devils keeper Aaron Romein. The error sent Romein from the field with a red card and left Dario Matkovic (69’) to comfortably slot the penalty past junior keeper Ryan Schorback. City peppered the goals throughout the last 25 minutes against 10 men as Antoniadis added a second to his account after a couple of near misses while Ash Cattermole (78’) savoured a slice of the scoring as well to finish the rout 4-1. Against 10 and a young keeper the margin should’ve been more though; the skipper John Carroll had a header cleared off the line and Anthony Cassar’s simple shot at the far post dribbled out of bounds. With head coach Aaron Healey on holiday, it made a turbulent outing for stand-in coach Gerry McDonagh, but he was pleased to see the side take on the challenge. “We knew Ballarat would come at us, and potentially cause some problems with the pace they had out wide and the pace they had throughout the midfield,” McDonagh said. “The drive by Shaun to get forward and recognise that ball was getting back to the keeper and actually get a touch to it and force the keeper into making an error. “We were able to play against 10 men - which is always nice when you’re ahead as it gives you an opportunity to knock the ball around in play and open them up.” McDonagh thought Luke Burgess was strong at the back while Gonzalo Freddi’s up-front work rate was phenomenal alongside Filopovic and Antoniadis in the best afield. Things will only get better for City from here as it should see the return of striker Keegan Ziada

Doveton SC had Noble Park United covered in SL2SE with Stephen Begue continuing his goal-spree alongside Simba Saidi. In the all Endeavour Hills start to the season, Endeavour Hills Fire carried on its strong FFA Cup qualifying rounds form to see off Endeavour United 3-2. David Schulberg cashed in twice for the Fire while Mathew Durand nailed the matchwinner off the bench.

Local legends first in new cricket hall of fame By JARROD POTTER YOU would struggle to find six more deserving men to be the inaugural inductees into the Dandenong District Cricket Association’s Hall of Fame. The league asked clubs this season to submit nominations for those they believe were Hall of Fame worthy and the inaugural six certainly stand up to that status. The first choice was no great surprise. Alan Wookey - the legendary DDCUA figure who umpired 400 first grade games and more than 25 first grade turf grand finals - was an obvious choice, especially since the league’s medal is named in his honour. DDCA president Michael Hawking was another to earn his place in the Hall of Fame, with his on-field achievements with Hallam Kalora Park too hard to go past. Another Wookey Medallist, Hawking’s efforts as an administrator are just as impressive as his work as a player with his 401 Turf 1 wickets making him a nightmare to face in the 1980s/1990s. “It’s indeed a very high honour and I was very pleased to accept it - I suppose it’s something you’ve got to earn over a long period of time and got to satisfy the criteria and I was able to do that,” Hawking said. “I’m very humble in accepting it - it’s a great thing that we’ve started.” St Mary’s duo Stephen Meyer - revered local bowler and dual Wookey Medallist - and Troy Cashman - exceptional batsman with 7500 runs in 250 matches including a whopping 14 centuries - made the grade on opposite sides of the ball and it was no surprise their time
DDCUA mainstay Alan Wookey, pictured with 2016 Wookey Medalist Matt Chasemore, was one of the first six men inducted into the DDCA's Hall of Fame. 151397 Picture: JARROD POTTER at St Mary’s co-incided with the club’s great successes of the 1990s/2000s. Dual Wookey Medallist and now Victorian Premier Cricket premiership winning coach Steven Chapman was another to get inducted on the first ballot as Chapman excelled for years with Hallam Kalora Park after he moved to Australia. “All those guys have incredible achievements over the period in the DDCA,” Hawking said. “Meyer with Rob Walton probably the best fast bowler I’ve ever seen, Cashman definitely with John Hammond the best bat I’ve seen. “Chapman for his all-round ability and Chapman was more than a batsman and a bowler as he revolutionised our cricket, because getting him out here sounded warning bells for all the association. “They had to improve and perhaps go
outside the normal recruiting structure to get an overseas player.” The final member, and inaugural Administrator inductee, Peter Barnes has been synonymous with the DDCA for the last three decades - 10 of which he served as league president. Hawking encouraged the clubs to look beyond the recent history and find out the champions of the league’s early days to make sure the Hall of Fame isn’t just for recent contributors. “You have life-memberships for years of service and some of these cricketers don’t necessarily get life-membership but their performances deserve recognition and I would expect clubs will delve deeper into their history and get a handle on the great names of the past that would qualify,” Hawking said. “That’s obviously the highest honour you can achieve - in any sport - to be in a Hall of Fame and it’s very important to recognise these people. “Guys like Harry Shepley and Bill Storan - who had an amazing influence in the Dandenong community in particular in sport; they’re the sort of considerations worth thinking about. “There’s more than just the people who have performed and achieved over the last 20-30 years and those in the past who have names on pavilions and sports grounds - it would be great to see the clubs that were associated with these people to delve into the past and see their contributions and they also should be added if they satisfy.” DDCA HALL OF FAME: Alan Wookey, Michael Hawking, Steven Chapman, Troy Cashman, Stephen Meyer, Peter Barnes.

Pongracic leads by example By JARROD POTTER LEADING the Dolphins into the 2016 VFL season isn’t something newly-announced captain Jason Pongracic will take lightly. Pongracic, 21, from Cranbourne, has been a mainstay at the Dolphins for the last three seasons and has been thrust into the top echelon of the club’s 2016 leadership group. The club’s internal ballot revealed a lot about what his team mates think of the former Dandenong Stingrays captain and their belief in his leadership capabilities. “I'm pretty stoked, obviously a massive honour to be given the captaincy,” Pongracic said. “The most important thing is what the team mates think and getting voted in and given the role by them is pretty special.” Taking the captaincy won’t change Pongracic’s actions though - he wants to lead by example as usual and not let it get in the way of his on-field responsibilities. “I don’t think much will change - I won’t change because of being
given the title,” Pongracic said. “Go about things the same way I have before - lead the way in how I act. “I don’t expect anyone to do what I wouldn’t do.” The Dolphins inclusions for season 2016 are led by Andrew McInnes, from Devon Meadows by ways of Carlton and Norwood in the SANFL, as well as Josh Bennett and ruckman Michael Sikora. Add to that debuting VFL prospects from the Stingrays - Pearcedale’s Harry Prior and Daniel Capiron - and Pongracic thinks the side is on the right path for 2016 and beyond. Just as important as the ins are usually the outs at Frankston ... but this time around there hasn’t been an exodus. The Dolphins list from 2015 is full of inclusions and lacks the usual loss of players that has dogged the side in recent campaigns. Frankston’s season begins on Saturday night at Casey Fields when they battle local rivals Casey Scorpions from 7pm.

 Reviews and news…
Citroen comes around again By DEREK OGDEN IN 1925, a Citroen 5CV became the first vehicle to complete a full circuit of Australia. Almost a century later, Citroens are still going round: an upgrade of the Citroen C4 hatch is one of the French maker’s latest models to land in Australia. Thanks to the adoption of PSA Peugeot Citroen’s award winning PureTech, Euro 6, petrol turbo powerplant featuring stop / start technology, mated with the latest six-speed Aisin automatic transmission, the new C4 offers greater power and performance from less fuel. As a bonus it also has new technology and additional safety features. Styling also comes in for a makeover, with two variants - Seduction and Exclusive - looking good from every angle. There’s no cheap version. Both slot in at the upper end of the segment price range, the Seduction coming in at $29,990, plus on-road costs, the Exclusive at $33,990. Our test car turned out to be the fully-specced Exclusive model - hardly a surprise. Styling sees new front and rear lights, front bumpers and new colours including all-new Gris Platinum and Gris Galet. Halogen headlights have the latest

The Citroen C4 hatch is taking on members of the crowded compact class. LED signature, tail lights have a 3D effect, mirror shells are chromed, automatic lights and wipers, dual zone climate control, cruise control with speed limiter, electro-chromatic rear view mirror, rear park assist and electric folding mirrors. The Exclusive also gains blind-spot monitoring, keyless entry and start, Cielo panoramic glass roof, electric park brake, front parking sensors, in addition to those in the rear, and reversing camera. The cabin has a premium feel with soft touch dashboard, quality cloth roof lining and touches of chrome on
the steering wheel controls, air vents and gear lever. The Exclusive receives a part-leather, cloth and alcantara trim as standard. The day spa stuff runs to electric lumbar adjust and massage for the driver. The optional full leather trim includes seat heating and massage for both front occupants. Generous storage includes a large glove box, door panels in front large enough for a 1.5-litre bottle, drawers under the front seats, storage space on the dashboard and under the front armrest. Focus of the cabin interior is an all-
new 7.0-inch tablet-style touch screen that gets rid of 13 buttons from the dash panel, resulting in a cleaner, more intuitive set-up. The new touchscreen has allowed the take-up of satellite navigation as standard on both models. The all-new PureTech drivetrain has provided a weight saving of 125 kg over the discontinued Euro 5 diesel model. Based on the three-cylinder naturally aspirated engines in the PureTech family, the turbocharged version in the C4 hatch operates smoothly and without the raspy sound of other compact units. Compared to the previous 1.6-litre, four-cylinder, four-speed automatic petrol drivetrain, the new C4 develops 8 kW more power and 70 Nm extra torque. While performance is up across all measures compared to the outgoing petrol model, fuel use and emissions are down - with an improvement of 2.1 litres in fuel use over 100 kilometres (down to 4.9L/ 100km) and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 39 grams per kilometre. The PureTech 130 drivetrain is mat-
ed with a six-speed automatic gearbox developed in conjunction with Aisin. Compared with the previous fourspeed transmission gear shifts are 40 per cent faster thanks to Quick Shift, a new technology for synchronised control of engine and gearbox, and a new and more efficient calculator. Intelligent Traction Control provides a better grip on slippery surfaces such as snow, ice and mud, detecting conditions that make it difficult to move off. In these situations, the ITC replaces the anti-slip regulation and transfers the drive force to the wheel with the best grip. There’s also Hill Start Assist and an electric parking brake that automatically holds the vehicle steady for two seconds to allow an easy start on gradients of over 3 per cent. Front foglamps with static cornering lighting shine an additional beam on the inside of corners. They are turned on in two ways: when the turn signal is activated or when the angle of the turning wheel reaches 60 degrees, lighting an angle of up to 75 degrees on either side of the vehicle. The ultrasonic Blind Spot Monitoring System fitted to Exclusive models warns the driver who hasn’t adjusted the mirrors correctly that a vehicle is in a blind spot they have created.
