Fair chance on the trail of antiquities Casey’s tips

Committee fights risky business

THE annual Stanthorpe Collectables Fair attracted bargain hunters from all over the Southern Downs and beyond. Were you there? Photographer Terry West and his trusty camera were - here’s who he found.

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council will look to appoint two suitably qualified people as independent committee members for its Audit and Risk Management Committee (ARMC). Council chief executive officer David Keenan said applicants would ideally have strong financial management, governance, risk management and audit skills and experience. “Experience in the private or public sector and a clear understanding of the external and internal audit context would be highly regarded,” he said. “The two committee positions are paid positions and the successful candidates will be appointed for a period of two years.” The ARMC is a committee required under the Local Government Act 2009. This role of this committee is to monitor and review the integrity of financial documents, the internal audit function and the effectiveness and objectivity of the local government’s internal auditors. It will also make recommendations to the local government about any matters that the audit committee considers need action or improvement. Interested parties can obtain an information pack with full details from the council’s website http://www.sdrc.qld.gov.au/ council/council-jobs. Written expressions of interest should be received by close of business on Friday 22 April. For further information, contact the council’s Manager Corporate Services Peter Gribbin, on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372).

Checking out the antiques on Saturday was Sophia, Candi, Kayden, Norm and Mason.

PHOTOGRAPHER Terry West knows a bit about the different forms of craft - well he does now. Terry went in to check out just what was going on at the Openly Crafty, Crafters Marathon at the Warwick Town Library Conference room. The marathon ran from Friday 5pm to Saturday 5pm this past week and featured all forms of crafting from card crafting to scrap booking, crocheting, patchworking and mixed media. Now Terry was only there for a short while to take some shots for the paper, but we’re all hoping he picked up some tips - home made cards for everyone this year, Terrry?

Thumbs Up Thumbs Down Thumbs Up, I sincerely thank the person who found my bracelet and handed it in to management at Rose City. Thankyou very much.

Suspicious siege THE inquiry into the Lindt cafe siege is revealing things we didn’t know before. However, I would like to hear what PM Tony, at the time, had to hide, and why he refused to talk to Monis on the phone. Perhaps if he had spoken to him the hostage incident might have ended without a loss of life. I understand the cafe manager was shot when he tried to wrestle the gun from Monis and when the police stormed the cafe the lady was killed by a stray police bullet.

Focus on aged care Casey’s tips

THE delivery of vital aged care services was the focus of a visit to Warwick this week by LNP candidate for Maranoa David Littleproud and Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister and Queensland LNP Senator James McGrath. During a guided tour of Akooramak Care of Older Persons, Senator McGrath and Mr Littleproud both acknowledged the important work of staff at Akooramak in supporting local families and caring for the elderly. “Warwick is fortunate to have such a high level of aged care offered in the community, which includes care for residents with high needs and those with dementia,” Senator McGrath said. “This visit was a great opportunity to meet staff and residents and find out what needs to be done to deliver even better services in the future.” Long time Warwick resident Mr Littleproud praised the work of Akooramak’s staff. “Local families really value local aged care services. Having access to such a high quality facility here in Warwick, means people can age in their home town, and families

From left LNP candidate for Maranoa David Littleproud, Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister James Mcgrath, Akooramak CEO Darryl Chapman and chair of the board Doug Cutmore. can stay together,” he said. “It is also very reassuring to know that as people navigate the many difficult decisions that need to be made in relation to long term

residential aged care, there are qualified, experienced, caring and compassionate local aged care staff willing to help and offer the right guidance.”

Appy April first for Southern Downs SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council’s new MY SDRC APP promotion, launched on Friday 1 April, is no joke, offering residents the chance to win products in support of that quest for more sustainable living. Southern Downs Regional Council’s chief executive officer David Keenan said the message was clear. “Residents are keen to implement sustainable measures in their homes and gardens to manage their household waste and lessen their environmental footprint,” he said. “This was reinforced with more than 400 residents attending the council’s Sustainable Living workshops last year with special guest speaker and ABC TV Gardening Australia’s Jerry-Coleby Williams, and the continuing

strong interest in the council’s waste reduction, composting and worm farming workshops. “Residents who download the free MY SDRC APP from today, 1 April will go into a monthly draw to win a compost bin, worm farm or water saving device, and can reap the rewards of managing their household waste, creating ‘green gold’ for their garden or becoming more water wise,” he said. “The MY SDRC APP not only provides residents with a ‘one-stop shop’ access to basic council information, but can also keep people up to date on what is happening in our region. “Downloads and usage of the MY SDRC APP increased significantly over the last four months with the council’s first promo-

tion, which gave away three family pool passes to the Wooding and Strand families from Warwick and the Roberts family from Stanthorpe. “The council’s new promotion will run from April to December and we’re aiming to reach 1500 downloads of the app by the end of this year,” Mr Keenan said. To enter, simply download the MY SDRC APP from the App Store (Apple devices) or Google Play (Android devices) and submit a request via the MY SDRC APP, selecting the category type “MY SDRC APP Promo 2-2016”, including your name and contact details. One lucky winner will be announced each month from 1 April to 9 December this year.

Rural advice funds continue DEPUTY Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said funding for Rural Financial Counselling Services (RFCS) was set to continue for the next three years. Mr Joyce, who is the Member for New England, including Tenterfield, said a new funding round would start from the beginning of April and help support rural communities and clients in need for years to come. “Richmond Valley Business and Rural Financial Counselling Services Inc. will be covering the New England and part of the North West and is one of the 12 service providers around the nation will be able to continue their valuable work in helping our farming families, including,” Mr Joyce said. “More than 5000 clients across Australia accessed RFCS services last year, a clear indication of how valuable it is to farming businesses. “The continuing funding package of $47 million through to 2019 demonstrates the Coalition Government’ s absolute commitment to supporting our farmers, fishers, forest growers, forest harvesters and rural small businesses who need advice on managing their finances.” Mr Joyce said core funding for the RFCS had continued to increase under the Coalition Government, rising from $13.56 million in 2012'13 under Labor, up to $15.01 million by the end of the new funding round in 2018-'19. “The Coalition is also strengthening the programme

by implementing enhancements flowing from the National Rural Advisory Council’s 2014 review of the RFCS, including increased flexibility to boost resources in areas where there is a spike in demand, such as communities hit by drought, flood and other events,” he said. “While the number of service providers has been reduced from 14 regions to 12, it means that more funds are available to help farmers rather than being spent on administration. “It will allow more effective and efficient spending, so clients can receive the same or higher levels of service, as well as better targeting of areas in need. “Extra transitional funding has also been made available to regions most affected by the boundary changes, to make sure that services to clients continue smoothly.” Mr Joyce said forest growers and harvesters would now be able to access the service, along with farmers, fishing enterprises and small related businesses that are in financial hardship. “The RFCS is jointly funded, and I certainly welcome the ongoing commitment of state and territory governments in supporting the programme. It has been providing an important service to farmers and rural communities for almost 30 years, and we are continuing to demonstrate our commitment to this service.” For more information, visit: agriculture.gov.au/rfcs

The Arioso Ensemble.

Going for Baroque AFTER the Brisbane Baroque Festival it will be Stanthorpe’s turn to go for baroque. The Robert Channon Winery will host the Arioso Ensemble on Sunday 17 April. The Arioso Ensemble brings together the talents and experience of leading specialists in baroque performance - Hungarian soprano Judit Molnar, Margaret Caley (violin), Belinda Manwaring (cello) and Janet Brewer (harpsichord). Playing on period instruments, they will perform a selection of Bach arias from his Wedding Cantata BWV 210, a selection of Handel German arias, Bach’s violin sonata in G, a Bonocini cello

sonata and a Handel harpsichord suite. The baroque period includes many of our best loved composers. This is a concert of beautiful music, and it will be a wonderful season opener for our 2016 concert series. The concert is indoors in the Swigmore Hall at Robert Channon Wines at 2pm on Sunday 17 April. Tickets are $25 including a glass of wine at the interval. Lunches are available beforehand in the Singing Lake Cafe. For bookings, call the winery on 07 4683 3260.

characters (including several played by almost the entire Jolie-Pitt clan). But when the supernatural villain Kai (JK Simmons) begins to sweep across China defeating all the kung fu masters, Po must do the impossible-learn to train a village full of his funloving, clumsy brethren to become the ultimate band of Kung Fu Pandas! Although there is talk that there will be more Kung Fu Pandas, this movie finally shows Po (Black) living up to his full potential and becoming the Dragon Warrior - it also sees

him dealing with two dads and his friend Tigress coping with pseudo parenthood. There is a lot to like about this movie – and not just for the kids (not the least the song Kung Fu Fighting sang in Mandarin). The effects are great, the film is visually beautiful and Jack Black isn’t as annoying as he could be – what more could you ask for from a kids movie – add in the talents of Bryan Cranston, Dustin Hoffman, JK Simmons and James Hong and this is a lot of fun for the whole family. – TANIA PHILLIPS

ing here. In this project, I paint not just immigrants, but also refugees. “The likeness between the two groups is surprising. Both find it not just difficult to adapt to Australian society, but also feel that Australia is a beautiful country to live in.” The official opening for New Arrivals will take place on Friday 8 April at 6pm at the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery Weeroona Park.

NEW Arrivals by award winning South African artist Jacques van der Merwe will be exhibited at Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery from 7 April - 20 May 2016. The exhibition has previously been shown at the Logan Art Gallery and the Beaudesert Art Gallery. In each place the exhibition visits, Jacques paints portraits of migrants from the area. So far, he has completed 18 works. The display will also feature three familiar faces from the Granite Belt, including Chamber of Commerce president John Bylicki New Arrivals deals with the theme of immigration and the challenges people face when moving to Australia. Through the medium of portraiture, Jacques captures people’s experiences with layers of thickly applied paint in engrossing colours. Jacques van der Merwe sometimes feels that painting is the best medium to express his concept. He applies paint thick, and the paintings are full of expression. Jacques is colour-blind, and this makes his use of colour interesting in the paintings. “I moved to Australia in early 2008,” he said. “My family and I left South Africa because of crime and the diminishing opportunities there. “Although my process was worthwhile, I was surprised by the complexity of the physical and emotional processes of migration. “When I speak to other people, I realised immigration is a life-changing experience for

IT is very rare for any franchise to have enough legs to produce three good movies – it’s even rarer for the third one to be the best. But there is something fun, a little new and really interesting about Kung Fu Panda Three, and it’s not just that Jack Black’s Po is almost the straight man um Panda this time. This is a movie with a great ensemble cast and an interesting story to tell. The animation, as with any Dreamworks movie, is top notch and the music is Hans Zimmer at his best. This is a little gem of a movie (and this is coming from someone who wasn’t the biggest fan in the world of the first two). We return to China where Po’s (Jack Black) long lost panda father (Bryan Cranston) suddenly reappears. The reunited duo travels to a secret panda paradise to meet scores of hilarious new panda

STARSCOPE ARIES—March 21-April 20 A mixed week. Friends are difficult to please and you could hear disappointing news about someone you respect. This week you should have significant career acomplishments and travel is accented through the weekend. TAURUS—April 21-May 22 You have to give up some of the limelight you have enjoyed lately, but learn to play a supporting role and you will come out a winner. An invitation arrives from someone you don’t know well - accept and enjoy a marvellous time. GEMINI—May 23-June 21 Possible financial confusion strikes later in the week, so keep all receipts. Your timing is superb on the weekend. Enter contests, ask questions and go hunting for bargains. Friends stun you with outspokenness. CANCER—June 22-July 22 There could be lots of commotion and motion before the weekend and it seems that you are never doing just one job at a time. This week offers great potential for accomplishments, particularly creative and financial ones. LEO—July 23-August 22 Your favourite companion is surprisingly generous while you are becoming more sensible in your own handling of funds. If entertaining, try for a different approach. One caution, be super-tactful with older guests. VIRGO—August 23-September 22 You can perform a valuable task by helping friends understand some of their problems. As for your own, a romantic strain is easing but a financial dilemma seems to become more complicated the more you work at it. LIBRA—September 23-October 22 Commitments take more time than anticipated and you could be forced to cancel some engagements. Some of your best ideas are met with an unenthusiastic reaction. Rather than discard them, try reshaping them. SCORPIO—October 23-November 21 With one exception, the week finds you at the right place at the right time and it’s an excellent week for making acquisitions. The exception? You overhear a private conversation and you would be wise not to repeat a word. SAGITTARIUS—November 22-December 22 Expect unusually large demands on your time, with people coming to you for love advice and moral support. In romance, a loved one may seem typically lighthearted. The financial picture brightens by the weekend. CAPRICORN—December 23-January 20 Featured are long distance communications and and some pleasant local travel. Moves are not especially favoured as there could be endless delays. Partnership arrangements are accented. The weekend is a wonderful time for starting an alliance. AQUARIUS—January 21-February 19 The stars indicate lots of excitement in your career and you can master numerous new accomplishments - still, some warnings are necessary. Try not to become overly fond of luxury and avoid shortcuts, especially earlier in the week. PISCES—February 20-March 20 You could be disappointed by news of a good friend’s romantic distress and job activities may shift into reverse. Meanwhile, your own friendships flourish. Think about hosting an impromptu gathering. BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK Though tolerant and loving, you don’t want others to come too close to you. In romance you are utterly cautious, easily embarrassed when paid a compliment, but you have the ability to excite, inspire and make the sparks fly.

Horses for courses ride in WARWICK expatriate Senior Sergeant Mark Paroz provided commentary as the horses and riders of the mounted police division were put through regular training routines during the Warwick Combined Probus Club’s visit. The horses become familiar with a variety of road surfaces, narrow bridges, hanging ribbons, operating in tight enclosed spaces, and opening gates at the police training facility at Moggill, according to Arthur Maynard of the Probus Club. “They are trained to stand steady when subjected to sudden loud noises, flying projectiles, and objects such as flags and balls touching their legs, bodies and heads,” he said. “Mounted police officers conduct regular beat patrols, and assist in crowd control

when required. “Training in formation riding prepares the horses for ceremonial duties and parades. In a meet and greet, we were free to meet with the horses and officers who answered a variety of questions about their duties, and the nature and temperament of their horses. “After inspecting the stables we boarded the coach for the short drive to Lone Pine Koala sanctuary which many had not visited since they were teenagers or young parents. “En route to the police training facility at Moggill, many members had their first experience of travel on Mt Crosby Road. “We were treated to magnificent views of rural Brisbane as we travelled up and down hills, and crossed the Brisbane River at College’s Crossing.

“We did not trust the GPS to take us to Lone Pine, so we took the scenic route to eventually arrive at Lone Pine for two hours in the sanctuary grounds viewing Australian native fauna including a Tasmanian devil, dingoes, platypus, koalas, snakes, kangaroos, emus and a variety of reptiles and lizards. “One member of the group had her lunch stolen from her cool pack by a brush turkey which then had to fight other birds to retain the spoils. “Talks and demonstrations by sanctuary staff held at frequent intervals provided an opportunity to learn more about the animal world. “The park is well kept, with the animals apparently well cared for and with adequate space. Other visitors to the park were predominately international tourists and backpackers.”

Arthur Maynard, Senior Sergeant Mark Paroz, Betty Wells and Norma Dwan during the recent visit.

Caribbeans crowned kings The

spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com

IT was no surprise that the T20 World Cup finals had us on the edge of our seats. Who would have thought going into the competition that we would see a final between the Caribbean Kings and the Poms. The West Indian team is certainly the Princes of the Caribbean after their stunning victory in the final over of the World Cup. English bowler Ben Stokes was barely consolable after Carols Braithwaite smashed four consecutive sixes in the last over of the final to clinch a remarkable win for The West Indians. The picture did not look as rosy for the West Indians when Chris Gayle was dismissed cheaply, and perhaps the English team were counting their chickens a little early. But with West Indies needing 19 runs off six balls, Brathwaite stepped up to the challenge. It capped off a great series for the Windies. Their Ladies team earlier defeated the Aussie Southern Stars who were shooting for their third consecutive World title. The wins will be a great shot in the arm for cricket in the Windies, and hopefully will lead to a resurgence of the glories of past West Indian teams. It can do cricket on the World stage no hard either. In the meantime for the West Indians it party time Caribbean style, and as it’s been a long time between drinks these celebrations will be long and strong you would think. - Casey FOOTY TIPPING - A HEALTH HAZARD? FOR many footy tipping competitions have become our armchair winter sports, but the 2016 NRL season is fast becoming a health hazard. JUST when you think you have the teams sorted, someone comes along and causes a monumental upset. Take the Dogs for instance in round five. Did someone fail to let them off the chain - they were but a mere shadow of the side that played so well the week before. Or is it perhaps that we are underestimating how physically challenging it is for teams to be “up” every week. Watching your favourite sides at home is beginning to become a real challenge for the faint hearted - how many golden point games can one deal with in a round. Games may soon have to be advertised with a health warning if this continues. This week the round kicks off with the Broncos hosting the Dragons at Suncorp, and it looks unlikely the way the Dragons have been playing that they can pull off an upset here. The Broncos continue to impress but will not be taking this game lightly. The Roosters have been playing like plucked ducks, and supporters will be hoping for more than a feather duster performance against the Rabbits on Friday night, but I fear the Bunnies will not be doing them any favours. Things don’t get any easier on Saturday with the inform Eels up against the resurgent Raiders at Parramatta Stadium. I think the Raiders might just be capable of causing another upset here. The Sea Eagles have also been below par and face a tough task crossing the ditch to take on the Warriors. Think there will be more pain for the Manly faithful again this week. The Cowboys have been in electric form and decimated the Dragons last week, but this is a danger game against the Panthers at Pepper Stadium. I think the visitors will have too much fire power, but this will be an entertaining game. The Sharks and Titans go head to head at Shark Park on Sunday. Both teams have started the season better than many expected, and I am looking for the Titans to launch an upset win here. The Knights host the Tigers on Sunday after-

noon and their first win for the season could come here. On Monday night, the Storm and Bulldogs are in action at AAMI Park. Which Doggies outfit will turn up? One thing for sure is the Storm will play their regular brand of consistent football and I can see another win coming for them here, but beware the vanquished Doggies - they may bite back here. WOODENBONG TO ANKARA NOT A LONGBOW IT seems a far cry from the surrounds of Woodenbong and Urbenville to a podium in Turkey, but that is the journey young Archer Remy Leonard recently took. Aged only 16, Leonard competed in the World Archery Indoor Championships in Ankara, Turkey, and announced his arrival on the World Stage with a medal winning performance. The youngster was accompanied on the journey by his father, Chris, and grandparents, Sharyn and Terry. He competed in the individual shoot in the Junior Men’s Compound division and the Junior Men’s Compound Team. The team’s event consisted of three shooters- Remy Leonard, Devilliers Duvenage and Harri Howden who amazingly prior to the event had never met. Their only contact had been via Facebook. All three proved to be capable shooters and settled into a comfortable rhythm in the competition. In the Junior Men’s Compound division, Remy Leonard reached the quarter final. A tie led to a one arrow shoot off. In a remarkable effort in the Junior Men’s Compound Team, the three boys were outstanding given their circumstances and won bronze for Australia. The Russian team took the gold medal and the Italians claimed silver. You can bet they had done a little more than chat on Facebook prior to the event. The boy’s bronze medal proved to be the only medal win for Australia at the event. Archers from all over the world, including Russia, Mexico, the United States, Ukraine, Iran and hosts Turkey competed in the global event. Expect to hear more of this youngster who should get used to travelling. His archery calendar is filled with events including the IBO World Championship in the United States, Australian Field Open in Melbourne, Junior National Championships in Penrith and the Trans-Tasman event in New Zealand. ROOSTERS COCK A HOOP AFTER a hiatus of three years, the Inglewood Roosters are back in business. On Saturday a big crowd of passionate supporters flocked to the MacIntyre Oval for the Roosters return to the BRL, and by the end of the game they had plenty to crow about as their side posted a 56-6 win over the combined Stanthorpe Texas side. In the Roosters line-up were 12 debutantes with several players who have come through the

Inglewood junior ranks donning the Roosters jersey for the first time and they brought plenty of youthful enthusiasm to the side. They were joined by a clutch of Millmerran players and some familiar faces returning to the Rooters ranks after playing a season in the TRL for the Warwick Cowboys. Inglewood looked in strong form from the get go and in the hot conditions their complement of 25 players was a big advantage. There is still improvement to come in this Roosters side as their fitness levels improve and they fine tune some of their combinations. Brent Osborne looked to be as dangerous as ever, playing half back this season and played a leading role in the Roosters win. Jamie Meddings was named as the Roosters Players Player. The Stanthorpe Texas side had not had the chance to train or have a run together since the announcement of the merged side. In the hot conditions and up against a slick Inglewood outfit, they were found wanting. The side will be better for the run, however if the merger is to work, players need to show a real level of commitment. Only 16 players were available for Saturday’s game it was always going to be a tough ask in the conditions. Coach Nathan Shatte is confident of a better showing from the group once they find their feet. There are no fixture games this week due to the South West Trial games in Miles. The next outing for the Roosters will be a tester when they take on the Tenterfield Tigers in Tenterfield. The combined Stanthorpe Gremlins side have a twoweek break because of an upcoming bye giving coaching staff and players a chance to work on some cohesion in the team. TIGERS WIN COSTLY THE Tenterfield Tigers battled hot conditions and serious injuries to key players in their opening game of the 2016 season against the Wallangarra Rams. The Rams put the first points on the board soon after kick off, but it was not long before the Tigers equalised. Poor ball handling and repeated penalties handed the Tigers field position and opportunities and they kicked away to an 18-9 lead. The Tigers went to the half time break ahead 22-10, and despite a mounting injury toll the Tigers showed plenty of guts and determination in the second half to post a big win. Jarrod McIntosh returns to the Tigers this season and immediately made his presence felt, scoring four tries and nailing three conversions. Three players debuted for the Tigers, Matt Clothier, Tim Kelly and Levi McGrady all make their A Grade Debuts for the Tigers and stepped up. Due to injuries all three were played in unfamiliar positions, but left their opposition clutching at thin air as they carved up the defence. McGrady certainly had a memorable debut crossing for four tries and looks to have a big future as a

The Tenterfield Tigerettes are looking for three premierships in a row in season 2016 and kicked off in style with a gutsy win over the Ramettes. Tiger. Another of the Tigers players who has returned in top form to start the season was Murray Johnson. His hard work during the game earned him the Players Player Award. Wallangarra have several players still to return from injury or suspension and also need to work on their fitness and ball security. Several of the Tigers key players will be looking forward to this weekend off to address some serious injury concerns after the game. TIGERETTES ON TOP THE Tigerettes opened the 2016 BRL season with a gutsy win over the Ramettes in Wallangarra last Saturday. With several debutantes in their ranks, the Tigerettes who are chasing a third consecutive premiership in 2016 began slowly. As the girls worked in to the game, they took an 8-4 lead to the half time break, and Wallangarra supporters were hoping for an upset. In the second half, the girls found their rhythm and combinations clicked in to place. The girls worked hard for each other in the second half and eventually ran away with the game 38-4. The win continues the Tigerettes outstanding two-season unbeaten run. Grace Clothier, Ella McIntosh and Hanna Byrnes all made a good start to their League Tag careers while Emily McMeniman returned to the side and had an outstanding game. Grace Clothier was voted Players Player for the day! The Ramettes certainly look to be the improvers this season and are another team with plenty of new faces in the ranks.

MILLS HITS FORM AFTER an outstanding performance from Jake Mills, it is hard to know if last Saturday was the April Monthly Medal; Nuffield Cup; Pike Trophy or simply the Jake Mills benefit day at the Stanthorpe Golf club. The recent form of Mills who previously had not won a competition has been on a steady improve recently, and it all came to fruition when he swept the board last Saturday to win all three gongs. The April monthly medal, the Nuffield Cup and securing best nett score two of three rounds to win the Pike Trophy. Runner-up for the medal day was Richard Reardon with an impressive nett 68, two shots back from the winner. The day’s stroke event and Nuffield Cup was sponsored by Mark McCosker while The Pike Trophy was sponsored by the club. The ladies event was won by Margie Locke with nett 77, a one-shot lead over runner-up, Rachael Hendry. Dylan Barraclough and Luke Reardon had the best gross (74) in the men’s event. Rachael Hendry had best gross (96) in the Ladies event. Putting honours went to Mark Hendry with 23 putts for the round. Fred Wharton, Grant Howard and Rachael Hendry took the balls for pin shots and pro-pins went to Dylan Barraclough, Brendan Barker and Darryl Boekholt. Neta Thouard and Kay Webb shared the ladies putts with 30 for the round. The run down went to nett 71 for the men and to nett 79 for the ladies. The Stanthorpe club hosted the Darling Downs Vets last week. A field of 50 players turned up and played the mixed 4BBB stableford. The Toowoomba team of G and J Stevens and the local pairing of Angelo Maugeri and Kay Webb finished locked up at 47 points, with a countback eventually giving the win to the visitors. A. Bryce and J. Kruse claimed the trophy for best nine with

This weekend Single Action and Rimfire Rifle competitions are on the agenda as well as some silhouette shooting. GOOD HOME WINS FOR COWBOYS THE Warwick Cowboys A Grade completed a successful Sunday for the club at Fr Ranger Oval with three of the four local sides posting wins against Valleys. The A grade side got away with a hard fought 34-28 win over Valleys after heading to the sheds with a comfortable 22-4 break at half time. Midway through the second half they still held a 34-10 lead, but to Valley’s credit they did not go away and kept coming at the Cowboys. The Cowboys hung on determinedly as Valleys crossed three times to narrow the margin to just six points. In the end it was a gutsy win by the Cowboys. The Cowboys posted another win in the under 18 competition, defeating the 2015 premiers 30-16. The Reserve Grade also had a 28-22 win. Valleys won the C Grade 30-16. MALLET PLAYERS KEPT BUSY PAT Schnoor returned to association croquet in Stanthorpe last week after a long break. Playing alongside Val Richards the pair drew 22-all with the team of Carol Verwey and Grace Howard. Effey Russell and Val Shephard Shot 16 in their game against Joy Newman, however it was not good enough to win and they were defeated 2116. In a very close game, Heather Widderick edged out Andrea Denkewitz 20-19 to claim a win after having a break of three in the game. There have been some close games recently in golf croquet. Val Fancourt, playing two balls, and her partner Dianne Wren, won a very tight game against the trio of Elaine Brown Bill Golding and Teresa Pyne. The final score 13 - 12. Although on the losing side, Brown top scored with 10 hoops, and shot a hoop in one. On the winning team, Fan-

court also scored a hoop in one. The second game played was just as close. Bill Golding teamed with Dianne Wren and Elaine Brown to secure a 10-9 win over Val Fancourt and Teresa Pyne, playing two balls, Elaine Brown once again led the way, top scoring with five hoops while Fancourt scored a very skilful jump shot. There was only one short game last week due to the rain and lack of players. Teresa Pyne and Val Fancourt were outscored 6-3 by Dianne Wren, Shirley Page and Bill Golding. Pyne scored a hoop in one and Fancourt skilfully put Wren through the hoop with a jump shot to take the point in an entertaining game. Both courts were in use last Friday for gateball as regular players were joined by four young visitors on school holidays. The youngsters, Emily, James and Kara had played a little gateball before. Julianne however was new to the game, but proved to be a quick learner and exceptionally well in all games. On Court One, members played two five-aside team games. Red winning the opening game 18-9. In the second game, White reversed the result to win 16-12. On Court Two the visitors were joined by two regular players in two games of triples. In Triples, one player (usually the captain) plays only one ball, while the other two players play two balls each. The scores finished quite close. Red won one game 16 points to 14, while White was successful in the other game 12 points to 11. The young visitors enjoyed the games and showed plenty of skill - it is a reminder that this is a game for all ages and all members of the public are invited to come along to the Come and Try weekend planned for 16 and 17 April. On Saturday, you can try golf croquet and on Sunday gateball which begins at 1.30pm. Contact Margaret Dickenson for further information. SPORTERS WIN FOR MAUGERI A SMALL but competitive field were out on the course for Sporters last Sunday. Angelo Maugeri posted a win ahead of runner up Norm Steele. The run-downs went to Dick Hilton and Tony Steele. Dave Williams had the best gross. Pin shots at 12 and 17 went begging however Mark Lynam picked up the Pro Pin. Dick Hilton and Ray Thorn did not leave empty handed - each winning a meat tray. A reminder that the Maureen Bates Memorial Day is this Sunday 10 April. A nine hold two ball ambrose has been scheduled, and it is a shot-gun start commencing at 9am. There are some great prizes on offer and a multi draw raffle. The all-important barbecue and bar will be operating and there is a sheet on the board at the club. This is always a popular day for local golfers and this should be another great day. CLUB DINNER AT BALLANDEAN THE Ballandean Soccer club will be holding a club dinner on Friday night at the “Chookhouse” commencing at 6.30pm. Pin shots went to Purcel on three, Kevin Williams on nine and Hampstead at the 14th approach. Jamie Purcel won the putting with 25. This week the club has set down a single stableford game. A reminder that the first and second rounds of the Club Championships will be played on 16 and 17 April. TRIATHLON SHOOTING THE Inglewood Sporting Shooters held a triathlon of pistol events last week and a good roll up of members and visitors enjoyed the competition. Charlie Nelson of Inglewood was joined by new members, Karen Welch and John Draper of Texas and enjoyed the shoot. Iain Bowen and Peter Jones had shooters on the hop with three different disciplines on the go. The event commenced with a 25-metre standard pistol and was followed by two action pistol matches which included the new Jungle Run. Tom Donald showed all of his versatility and experience to take out the vent from Iain Brown and Peter Jones.
