Dream wedding for tragic bride Community delivers on dying wish By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A massive community effort has made a dying wish come true for a Meredith woman. A flood of offers helped organise a wedding in just a week for Mandy Pattenden and fiance John Brockway. Despite suffering terminal cancer and spending more time in hospital than at home so far this year, Mandy plans to step out as a beautiful bride on Sunday. And the man she calls “my rock will be waiting to make her wedding dream a reality. Mandy’s sister, Cara Stansfield, said the family feared Mandy wouldn’t make it but the “amazing community assistance had lifted her spirits. “We know she doesn’t have much time left. The cancer is stage four and spread to Mandy’s liver and elsewhere. “She was in hospital on Tuesday for another procedure to help alleviate the pain and make her more comfortable. “It has been a rollercoaster of doctors, hospitals and chemo. Mandy has tried everything, including alternative therapies and focussed on fitness. “She even took up weightlifting a while back to stay positive. Cara said the family wanted to tell the story to say thank you to everyone who contributed to organising the wedding at such short notice. Union claim Two Geelong union organisers have been named as part of allegations the CFMEU targeted Kane Constructions with a coordinated illegal industrial campaign, according to Fair Work Building and Construction. Brendan Murphy and Gerard Benstead were listed in the Federal Court claim for alleged involvement in the campaign on building sites including two Geelong hospitals and the city’s library.

44% back Lyons in Labor ‘safe seat’ By LUKE VOOGT Darryn Lyons could win the safe Labor seat of Corio as an independent at this year’s federal election, according to a survey this week. Forty-four per cent of respondents backed him in the survey of 38 voters at Lara, Newcomb, Corio and Geelong West. The result would be enough to deliver him victory after distribution of preferences. “It’s nice to know the people of Geelong feel I’ve done a great job as mayor of Geelong,” Cr Lyons said in response to the result. The Geelong Indy survey asked: Would you vote for Darryn Lyons if he ran as an Independent in Corio? Support was strongest for Cr Lyons in Geelong West and Corio, where he had 63 and 50 per cent support respectively. More than half the respondents praised his performance as mayor. “I think he’s done some awesome stuff for Geelong,” said Lara’s Adele Bar. Leopold’s Steve Murray said Cr Lyons was “the only person who’s done anything in the guts of town since I can’t remember when”. Others questioned his ability as a federal politician or labelled him ineffective and self-obsessed. “He’s great as mayor,” said Newcomb’s Paul Cameron. “But as a person who has to work on the legislative council he would struggle. He’s an indi-

Geelong’s council has applied to break the State Government’s new rates cap by 40 per cent. The council’s bid for a 3.5 per cent increase was justified as a “financially responsible move to reduce debt”, said Mayor Darryn Lyons.
Instant millionaire “My godfather, I’m an instant millionaire”, said a Herne Hill man when told he had won a division-one lottery prize. TattsLotto said the man won $1.3 million with a ticket he bought on a whim after seeing a parking space available outside a lotto outlet.
Business ‘confident’ Eighty-four per cent of Geelong businesses expect improved sales this year, according to a chamber of commerce survey. The chamber’s second annual business trends survey of members presented an “optimistic outlook” for the city, said chamber president Kylie Warne (pictured).

vidual and doesn’t like to consult.” Lara’s Vicki Endrei disliked “his show-pony attitude”. “A lot of people say he’s done a lot but I wonder how much of that’s actually him.” The survey contrasted a report that ALP-commissioned polling had found 10 per cent support for Cr Lyons in Corio, 50 for Labor incumbent Richard Marles and 30 for an as-yet-unnamed Liberal candidate. But both polls suggest Cr Lyons could at least reduce Labor’s margin in the seat. Corio’s safe-seat status had cost it election commitments for decades, Cr Lyons said. “There have been no big-ticket federal items for the whole seat of Corio,” he said. Cr Lyons hoped all parties would field strong candidates in Corio and encouraged other independents to stand. But he remained tight-lipped about whether he would contest the election. “I haven’t made any decision about my political career at this stage. I’d want to plan a full commitment to the people of Geelong.” In other survey results, two respondents said they would vote for Cr Lyons only if he ran as an ALP candidate, while several others would withdraw support for him if he stood as a Liberal. Some respondents said they would wait for Cr Lyons to announce whether he would stand or wait for the findings of a state Commission of Inquiry into the council before making a decision.

The State Government leaked its own report of an inquiry into Geelong’s council, according to South Barwon MP Andrew Katos. “The only people to have a copy are the minister and the commissioners. The opposition doesn’t, the City of Greater Geelong doesn’t,” Mr Katos said. “It is disturbing that the government is leaking its own report to a media outlet. “The process needs to have integrity. These are serious matters and yet the government’s acting quite flippantly.” The Government-initiated Commission of Inquiry finished last week, with the report handed to Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins on 31 March. Media reports two days later said the key recommendation was to sack the entire Geelong council. Mr Katos said the inquiry report was aimed at discrediting Mayor Darryn Lyons in case he stood as a Liberal or independent candidate for Labor’s federal seat of Corio. The leak disrespected the commissioners, Mr Katos said. “Who leaked the report? It needs to be investigated,” Mr Katos said. “If a minister of the Crown leaked the report, those questions need to be answered. “If a government minister is found to have leaked the report then they should fall on their sword. It is completely inappropriate and not becoming of minister of the Crown.” Mr Katos said targeting the entire council meant innocent councillors were “being dragged through the mud”. He said councillors entangled in the saga deserved an opportunity to defend themselves. Mr Katos expected the report to be tabled in parliament next Tuesday. Deakin ward councillor Ron Nelson said he was extremely disappointed that state government would leak the report for its own political expediency. “I am being tarred by the same brush as others in the organisation. This makes me look like a bully and I’m not. “State government has the power to suspend any councillor that is found to be a bully and it should use that power rather than dismiss the whole council.” Cr Nelson said only two commissioners turned up to his interview and in 50 minutes was not asked one question about bullying. “We should be judged on our merits and the people should decide if I am fit for council and that’s at an election,” Cr Nelson said. “I stand by my commitment to my community. Getting rid of good people trying to do the right thing by the community serves no purpose.” Cr Nelson said replacing councillors with commissioners would reduce ratepayer representation. Ms Hutchins said the Government wanted to deal with the issues as quickly as possible “in the best interests of Geelong”. “The details of the commission’s report and the State Government’s response will be made public when the report is tabled in parliament,” she told the Indy. “This is about ensuring the council is set up to prevent the culture of bullying highlighted by the Halliday report never happens again.”

Double Take Magistrates will earn less respect than some witnesses in Geelong’s newest court, if State Government grammar is anything to go by. The government’s recent statement launching Geelong Koori Court capitalised the titles of “Aboriginal Elders and Respected Persons”, who would advise the court on sentencing of offenders. But, according to the government, the poor old “magistrate” deserved only an uncapped title. Clearly magistrates will not be “Respected Persons” – in Geelong Koori Court at least. Local news readers might have come across a story about the naming of new artificial reefs for anglers off Torquay this week. Going straight off the press release, the media reported how Rev’s Reef was in honour of fishing identity Trevor ‘Rev’ Buck, who tragically died last week. Apparently ‘Rev’ was a willing volunteer on recreational fishing projects and earned much goodwill for his toil But where was he from? Torquay? Geelong? The stories didn’t say and the name was unfamiliar. Double Take asked the state department responsible for the release. “Cranbourne”, was the response. Cranbourne? With all due respect to Rev, surely the local reef could have been named after a local angler. With all the melodrama over leaked reports apparently recommending the sacking en masse of Geelong’s council, one online media aggregation site produced the best report of all. The unintentionally hilarious coverage by myexpress.com.au, which uses computer software to translate and rewrite stories from
around the world, told us that Geelong council was “during risk of pouch over ban news into culture”. Referring to council as the “Geelong legislature”, the report said the commission of inquiry was an “arise of a ban news into a council’s enlightenment”. The previous Halliday report into alleged bullying had “revealed some low flaws” and “poignant concerns relating to conflicts of seductiveness and bullying poise by a series of councillors”. “Current and ex-staff lifted fears of repartee for vocalisation out, indicating to a odds of astray diagnosis and serve bullying for rocking a boat”, the report continued. Even Mayor Darryn Lyons was quoted, sort of: “I can’t criticism on a news that hasn’t been released.” Clearly, the story was lost in translation. Still on the media, pro surfer Matt Wilkinson attracted plenty of attention for his $5000 bar bill after winning the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach last weekend. Wilko’s big splash reminded Double Take of when multiple world champion Kelly Slater attended Jan Juc’s pub to celebrate his own victory at the pro some years back. The publican, unknown to surf, had no idea as to the identity of his cashed-up American patron, calling him ‘Steve’ throughout the evening. Pouring another beer for ‘Steve’, our man behind the bar happily spoke of his great fortune with a three-figure payout from a bet on the gallopers earlier that day. “Well I just won $50,000,” said Slater, Bells prizemoney in pocket. “Jeez, Steve,” shot back the publican, “what horse did you have your money on?”

Amber’s beautiful journey
Dream wedding for tragic bride
A photo on social media has sent a Lara student on a whirlwind international beauty pageant adventure. Amber Dew, 19, began competing in pageants after a modelling agency executive saw her tagged on a Facebook photo late last year. “Shortly after that we met up for interviews and within a couple of months I was sent over to Taiwan to compete in my first pageant, Miss Charity Queen, where I represented Australia against 87 other countries,” Amber said. “After that experience I fell in love with pageants and became a freelance model and now often judge pageants.” Amber studies commerce and arts in a double major at Deakin University. She was recently named Miss Geelong Galaxy and will compete in the Galaxy pageant’s national finals on the Gold Coast next week. The winner will fly to the US in August for international finals in Florida, Amber said. “I’d recommend any girl to join a pageant because you just never know where it could lead you.” The Miss Galaxy Australia pageant encourages participants to be a “role model to their peers and community”, partly through fundraising for their chosen charities, Amber said. She has been raising money for Make A Wish Foundation with the help of various local business sponsors. “As part of my fundraiser I put together a raffle and successfully sold all of the tickets, with 100 per cent of proceeds going directly to Make A Wish Foundation,” she said. Founded in 1985, Make A Wish has granted the wishes of more than 8000 children with lifethreatening illnesses. Numerous children from the Geelong region have been beneficiaries over the past 30 years. More information about the charity is available at makeawish.org.au.

“But we also want to spread awareness of the need to go and get tested as soon as possible once there is anything that is not quite right,” Cara said. “Mandy was advanced before we caught it, and even the doctors thought she was too young to be suffering bowel cancer. One of her friends went and got tested recently and had lucky escape. Check for everything. It’s better than going through this sort of heartbreak,” Cara said. She said Mandy and John, who have been together for about seven years, had planned to wed two years ago but Mandy’s diagnosis and a constant stream of setbacks had conspired to delay it. “Some of the big items, like the wedding dress from Bernice Bridal Fashions, had been organised but there were lots of other things that still needed to be done.” With Cara’s time taken up more and more with her sister, Torquay’s Gail Smaniotto took up the challenge of organising the remaining needs. “It has snowballed into an amazing humanitarian project. It has been so heart-warming to experience when there’s so much negativity in the world today.” The couple will celebrate with an outdoor ceremony beside the Moorabool River at Meredith followed by reception at Meredith Hall.

· Bowel cancer is Australia’s second biggest killer after lung cancer, claiming the lives of 77 people every week. But it need not be so because bowel cancer is one of the most curable types of cancer if found early. That’s why Bowel Cancer Australia initiated Bowel Cancer Awareness Month every June to raise public awareness of the disease. Bowel Cancer Awareness Month has a positive message – saving lives through early detection. More information can be found at bowelcancerawarenessmonth.org.

Bayfront silent assailant 'on drugs' A silent assailant apparently on drugs and wielding a metal bar has assaulted a worker on Geelong’s waterfront, according to police. May trial for ferry A passenger ferry could begin trial runs between Portarlington and Melbourne’s Docklands in May, according to a group pushing for the service. But the trial would have to make “allowances” until completion of a permanent berth in the town’s harbour later this year, said Portarlington Safe Harbour and Bellarine Ferry Group in its quarterly update email. The Indy reported last year that the Little Group wanted to trial the service to complement its ferry to Melbourne from a new waterfront Wyndham residential development. “Now that the new Wyndham Harbour is complete, the Little Group are working through the final items to get that service underway,” this week’s email update said. “They expect at the latest a ferry will come down from Queensland in May to start trials for the Wyndham ferry service. They also plan while the ferry is available to trial the Portarlington run to Docklands. “Given that the Portarlington Safe Harbour is still being built, allowances will have to be made if the ferry cannot berth at the present pier during the running of these trials.” The success of the Wyndham ferry would “play a big part in the design of the Portarlington service”, the Portarlington group said. tarlington, will include a floating berth for ferries. The passenger service has been mooted for years but has lacked adequate berthing facilities and a financial backer. The Little Group’s boss told ABC radio in October that the ferry from Portarlington to Docklands would be faster than the same trip by road. The initial plan was to sail from Portarlington to Wyndham and on to Docklands, Paul Little said. The company had been in talks with Sea Link Travel Group about operating the trial, he told the ABC.

‘Catch 22’ bus is headed nowhere
Vikki has role wrapped up By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Vikki Ellis reckons she would be tearing her hair out if it wasn’t for her packing job at the Endeavour Foundation in Norlane. The Geelong West mother of three and grandmother to five still loves her job after working in the supported environment for eight years. “I couldn’t stand just sitting at home, twiddling my fingers and looking at four walls, Vikki said. “I love coming to work because all my friends are here and they are a great bunch of people. “It’s my second home. Vikki said she had “learned a lot from the work, including completing a food handling course. She nominated attention to detail as the key skill in her work. Vikki will be one of the full-time and parttime staff on hand for the Endeavour Foundation open day on 14 April. Commercial Manager Anthony Tavelli said the foundation was opening its doors for the community to find out more about meaningful employment opportunities for people with disabilities. The roles offered the chance to develop new skills, grow in confidence and make friends in a supportive environment, he said. “Supported employment provides a great way for people with a disability to contribute to the local economy and enhance their level of involvement in the community. “Along with valuable hands-on employment experience, people with a disability have the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications and grow confidence by gaining new skills. “A variety of employment opportunities exist within general and food packing, including the roles of food packer, warehouse worker and machine operator. “If you’re15 or older, receive the Disability Support Pension and want to contribute to your community, we can offer full time or part-time opportunities depending on personal preference and the
Bus services to northern Bellarine are in a “catch 22 situation of falling patronage leading to service cuts, a transport survey has found. Bellarine Community Health’s Claire Bower said she was alarmed that the survey results had found that half the residents of Portarlington, St Leonards and Indented Head had never used public transport. “It’s a catch 22 - not enough people use the bus, therefore they cut services, but that also means using the bus is less appealing as services are more limited, Ms Bower said. The most common reasons for not using public transport were limited frequency of buses, not understanding the Myki system and a preference for car travel, she said. A community campaign that is been under way for several months is pushing for reinstatement of an hourly route-60 bus service. Now a new program is trying to make northern Bellarine residents more confident about using public transport, Ms Bower said. “We hope this program will get more people using the bus which will, in turn, create demand for an improved service on the northern Bellarine. The No Fuss Bus Program was developed with Travellers Aid Australia and RACV to educate the community on using public transport and encourage greater bus patronage. The program would run sessions for either groups or individuals, with topics including types of public transport, understanding the Myki system and how to navigate public transport websites and apps. “The sessions can be tailored to cover whatever someone feels they need to learn, Ms Bower said. “Our trained volunteers can even take people out on public transport for a practical session to make them feel comfortable and safe. Program session bookings are available by phoning Ms Bower on 5258 6144.
COMPLETE PACKAGE: Vikki Ellis loves her job. type of employment you’re best suited for. Mr Tavelli said Endeavour Foundation’s Open Day would run from 1pm on 14 April,

Trees in fire risk
‘Waste’ on highway
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
LOPPED: Geelong's significant trees are under threat.
with actual risk.” Mr Tieppo said the government overlooked Geelong’s previous map, so council had to ask for the city’s bushfire-prone status to be changed. Council’s planning portfolio-holder, Michelle Heagney, said the laws allowed for the removal, destruction or lopping of vegetation to reduce fuel load around buildings and adjacent to fences without needing a planning permit. “Geelong has large urban areas with no designated fire threat, but our council doesn’t benefit
from the exemption applied to other metropolitan councils,” Cr Heagney said. “This means we’ll continue to lose significant trees in parts of the city that have no identified bushfire threat under the current planning controls. “It’s also important that we look after the 156 significant trees listed in the schedule to our heritage overlay, which are mostly in urban areas of Geelong and could be removed with no planning permit under current exemptions.”
1221937-KK12-16
Landmark trees across urban Geelong could be cut down after State Government identified them as bushfire threats. Council is seeking an exemption to save the “significant“ trees and others after the government ignored a City Hall bushfire-risk map and put the entire municipality in a new restricted zone. City services general manager William Tieppo said the new planning controls for areas deemed bushfire-prone emerged following 2009’s Black Saturday. “Council accepts that where there’s a threat of bushfire the need to protect life and property is absolutely paramount," Mr Tieppo said. “In urban areas where there’s no bushfire threat, these controls are undermining heritage values and neighbourhood character, leaving council now seeking greater parity with other metropolitan councils. “City of Greater Geelong officers from building, planning and fire prevention met originally with State Government representatives and the CFA to develop a new map outlining the areas
The Princes Highway duplication to Colac was due to pork barrelling in a marginal electorate instead of economic priority, a new report claims. The 89-kilometre stretch did not connect two important hubs and returned an “exceptionally low” benefit cost ratio, retutning eight cents in the dollar, the report said. The Grattan Institute report, Roads to Riches: Better Transport Investment, said governments had spent unprecedented sums on road infrastructure, but had not spent wisely. The report used the Princes Highway “spur” from Geelong to Colac as a case study, saying it was a curious inclusion on the national roads network. The report said investment in the road had been among the highest per vehicle kilometre of any road on the National Network at a cost of $438 million since 2005. This was “well short of a breakeven point, let alone a net benefit to the community”, the report said. The road was of higher quality than many other national roads carrying more traffic. But Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson hit back at the “biased, city centric” report, denying the duplication was a waste of money. “As the Liberal candidate, I am incredibly proud to have fought so hard to deliver the funding to duplicate this road,” Ms Henderson said. “The duplication of the Princes Highway between Geelong and Colac is vital infrastructure for our region. It is most regrettable that the report did not take into account the broader economic benefits of the Princes Highway duplication.”

MARCH was Geelong’s warmest since 2013, with a mean temperature of 19.5C. This compares to the current 30-year March mean in Geelong of 17.8C. It was also the city’s sixth warmest March since records began. Six days recorded temperatures over 30C, compared to the average of 4.2. The highest daily maximum was 34.6C on 17 March. Overnight minimums were much higher than average, with March 2016 recording an average 15C compared to 12.3C. This was the highest March minimum average since 1974. The highest overnight minimum was 20.4C,
recorded on 9 March when the temperature was still 31C at 2am before cooling down. No nights were below 10C for the month, compared to the average 8.5. Most of the region received below-average rain, except for the southern suburbs of Geelong, which averaged over 30mm. The northern suburbs were closer to 25mm, compared to the latest 30-year average of 26.4mm. Most of the month’s rain was recorded on 17 to 18 March, although March was storm-free. The limited rain left the region’s storages at just over 35 per cent of capacity, with around 34 billion litres still in local dams and reservoirs. One thunder day was recorded, on 3 March, while eight days had rain and several were overcast with drizzle.

BIG DAY OUT: Treehouse Geelong ambassador Chloe Hayden and Annie Stephens add colour and smiles to the organisation’s World Autism Day celebration on Saturday. Treehouse is a not-for-profit body supporting families with autistic children.
Koori court call Aboriginals will soon have their own courts in Geelong to deliver “more culturally-appropriate” sentences, the Andrews State Government has announced. The Government launched the Koori Court in Geelong today, saying it would “reduce the overrepresentation of Aboriginal Victorians in the criminal justice system”. The adult’s and children’s courts would let offenders “discuss the underlying life issues that contribute to their behaviour”. “They involve the Koori community, Aboriginal elders and respected persons in the court process, with an elder or respected person providing cultural advice to the magistrate and discussing the background of the offender,” the government said. “The magistrate still sentences the offender in accordance with the same requirements that apply in mainstream courts.”
The court would begin hearing cases in June, the government said. Defendants wanting to appear in Koori Court must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and plead guilty. “The person must not be charged with a sexual offence or breach of an intervention order and must be willing to come to court and talk openly about their behaviour.” Victoria already has other Koori courts outside Geelong, providing work for “80 elders and respected persons” and 16 other full or part-time staff. “It’s fantastic to see the Koori Court model being rolled out in Geelong – it will be a huge benefit to Aboriginal Victorians in the Barwon South West region,” said Labor Geelong MP Christine Couzens. “Koori courts are also a great source of employment for local Koories. I look forward to meeting with local Koori Court workers once the court begins sitting in June this year.”

Good news reveals questionable gains for Geelong
Dead wood killing CBD All power to Bill Votsaris on his comments regarding parking in the Geelong CBD (Letters, 1 April). These parking imposts create no net benefit to the rate-paying public, already hard-hit by Geelong’s industrial demise, but simply serve to flesh out the council corporation’s financial bottom line. Residents must be reminded that council’s income is over $250 million a year and that the Westfield development was the cause of the CBD’s decline. Since then essentially nothing has been done to revitalise the CBD except for the installation of a few buskers and the bright idea of Food Truck Friday, comprising out-of-town vendors that ruin the trade of established, permanently rate-paying commercial tenants. All the businesses in the CBD regard Food Truck Fridays as a disaster. They have asked council officers to witness the devastation for themselves but they refuse to attend. Council spends something like $125 million a year on wages and salaries but is stacked to the rafters with dead wood. Eliminating much of it would mitigate any alleged revenue shortfall. Mr Votsaris’s suggestion can be seen as a stimulus idea and should be adopted by council, which has already been called wasteful and incompetent by a recently-leaked Commission of Inquiry. Lift your game, councillors. Gary Oraniuk Geelong West

PRISON OFFICER ROLES Recruiting now “Working as a prison officer is nothing like what you see in the movies. I wanted a new challenge but importantly, I wanted a job that was meaningful. You get lots of training in this job and you never stop learning. No two days are ever the same. Be prepared to be busy, there is always something to do.
Dirty tricks behind inquiry leak Politics is said to be a dirty game and after this latest tack I am inclined to agree. If State Government commissioned the Commission of Inquiry into Geelong’s council, why did the commissioners advise ratepayers that the three days for public input had been trimmed to one? It reminded me of policy on the run. Was it deliberate to cause embarrassment to City of Greater Geelong (COGG)? Since recommendations from the inquiry were leaked to the media, I ask: · was the report handed directly to the Local Gov-

WHY BOTHER: Do recently announced projects have any real value for Geelong, a reader asks. Airport, remains Chicken Little governance. Finally, Paula Kontelj had every right to praise brother-in-law and councillor Eddy Kontelj for his ascension to managing director of William Adams Caterpillar Melbourne (Letters, 1 April) but, given his time spent from “the Pilbara to The Andes of South America’’, how does council and the electorate get full benefit from time-poor councillors? Would it be better to have, say, five full-time popularly elected councillors including a mayor with the city’s holistic interests as their sole mantra? Richard Worland Manifold Heights ernment Minister by the commissioners · why was COGG not supplied with a copy; · why was COGG unaware the handover imminent or complete; · was the report to the minister the only copy; · who leaked the report before it was tabled in parliament; and · was it leaked to embarrass the mayor? A higher authority outside State Government control must launch an investigation immediately. Also, the focus of the report appears entirely on elected representatives. What about reported bullying by COGG officers? Will perpetrators to be named and shamed in the report? The sacking of a council without parallel punitive action against bullies working for COGG will not rid the organisation of shameful workplace cultures in some divisions. Sandra Camm Belmont
Our three top sports I congratulate three Geelong-area students who received Victorian School Sport Awards in recognition of their outstanding achievements as young athletes. Bellarine High School’s Ned Weatherly was recognised for his performance in athletics, alongside basketballer Matthew Johns, of Belmont High School, and netballer Tess Campigli, of Montpelier Primary School in Highton. In their 22nd year, the awards recognise outstanding young athletes for their performances and aim to encourage all students in our state schools to have fun and get active. I extend my warmest congratulations to these students on receiving the highest possible award for athletes in Victorian Government Schools. One day we may see Ned competing for gold at the Olympics, Matthew shooting three-pointers in the NBA and Tess turning out for our world champion Diamonds. Last week’s Indy contained four good-news items but will their subjects offer net gains to the community? Despite Sport Minister John Eren’s assurance that Kardinia Park trustees would provide “an exciting and secure future’’ for the stadium, where’s the representation for park tenants Geelong Cricket Club, Geelong Swimming, dual netball association affiliates and historic St Mary’s Football and Netball Club? Given the trust’s loaded advocacy composition for stadium tenant Geelong Football Club, isn’t this management reconfiguration, given also that it contains no professional entrepreneurial management for music and the arts, just a rebranding of the status quo? Next, Viva Energy’s $3 million for northern suburbs health programs is commendable, as is the provision of 700 jobs, but Geelong Trades Hall’s recent campaign in the Indy noted Viva as a habitual polluter that gave preference to 457 visa workers and the use of problematic imported steel. Next, G21’s scattergun advocacy for 17 priority projects, including a $30 million jetty and un-costed appeal for an international Avalon

Greta hits the high notes What better way to announce a national tour than singing it from the rooftop of Australia’s national icon – the Sydney Opera House. The scene was all the more appropriate for a tour by soprano Greta Bradman, taking in Geelong next month. The tour comes on the back of her 2015 awardwinning, chart-topping debut album My Hero. “I’m so excited to be performing these concerts around Australia which celebrate some truly beautiful songs and arias paying tribute to some of my musical heroes,” Bradman said. Among Bradman’s heroes is Richard Bonynge, who conducted her with the English Chamber Orchestra on the album. Bradman will be accompanied throughout this national tour by acclaimed pianist/organist Rhys Boak. But many of Bradman’s heroes are not musical or particularly famous. “I think of a hero as a woman or man who inspires one to greatness – to striving to be the most useful and greatest version of oneself,” Bradman explained. “There are so many folks who would fit the bill for me. Rosie Batty for sufficiently overcoming one of the greatest personal tragedies imaginable so as to engage our nation in a debate around domestic violence and finding ways of decreasing its prevalence and helping its survivors. “Paul Francis for his work through the Humpty Dumpty Foundation at raising funds transparently and efficiently to buy medical equipment for paediatric wards in hospitals. “Daniel from my local cafe who strives to instil in his customers a passion for the finer nuances of good coffee and fair trade. “There are so many folks working across all levels of the community who provide so much

The 18-concert tour has a special focus on regional centres, with Bradman considering it a chance to say thanks to those who supported her journey as a professional soprano. “I want to perform in regional Australia as well as capital cities because I adore the vastness of this great continent and its people,” she said. “I believe it’s imperative to include Australia’s rural community – the country’s life blood – in one’s journey as an artist and in doing so to make sure there are opportunities for people living here to experience live performances of classical music.” Greta Bradman performs 7.30pm on 9 May at St Mary of the Angels Basilica.

Circus has many thrills to juggle
SHELL CLUB
With 20 elite performers, Circus Royale will bring acrobatics, comedy and death-defying stunts to Geelong next week. Motorcycles, fire-juggling acrobats, youthful performers and illusionists will be part of the show as the circus celebrates its 45th anniversary. “This is real old-fashioned traditional circus,” said ringmaster Damian Syred. “It’s big, exciting and wonderful family entertainment.” The show will feature a Globe of Death, returning to the circus after a long absence. Mexican siblings Brandon, Geraldine and Hugo Fernandez will risk their lives in the fourmetre globe, riding at speeds up to 80km/h. Geraldine, 16, is also the female Globe of Death rider in Australia and one of two in Mexico. “Sometimes, if they don’t know I’m a girl, the crowd is really shocked,” she said. Circus promoters said audiences would also enjoy Harrison Football Dogs. “We play two teams of three and, given their natural playfulness, the boxers are a hit with the crowd,” said trainer Michael Harrison. Other circus features include South American contortionist Susana Reyes, who shoots a bow and arrow with her feet, and Pancholin the Chilean clown. Syred, 33, said he always dreamed of owning a classic circus. He loved everything about circuses from his first smell of the sawdust and grease paint. “Growing up, I did all the things kids do - I tried to have a cool haircut and wear cool clothes,” he said. “As ringmaster I get to seriously dress up, I love

EVEN the spices are homemade at Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant. It’s all part of business owner Sandeep ’Sandy’ Kaushal’s dream to have “the best restaurant in Geelong”. Modern with an Indian touch, Sandy has adorned the walls with Indian wooden delights and a large handcrafted mirror. He previously ran a successful Indian restaurant in Ocean Grove but decided to launch Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant to give more people an opportunity to try the cuisine. “My head chef, Ayub Khokhar, has 20 years’ experience and has even worked overseas – he’s very popular and has a great reputation. “He won the 2015 Geelong Father of the Year award too.”
And within just one month, Sandy has already reached the same level his previous business had. “Everybody is coming here saying they have never tasted such good food,” Sandy says. “Our prices are very competitive; the menu ranges from $2 to $25.” Sandy recommends trying the Tandoori Platter, Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala. Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant seats up to 90, offers pick up options and delivers free for orders within a 10 kilometre radius. Sandy recommends booking a reservation if planning to dine in over the weekends. Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant is open from noon-10pm, seven days a week at 17 Pakington Street, Geelong West, phone 5229 0077.

Holiday check-up Anyone who is planning a holiday should think about their ears before they leave. There is nothing worse than a blocked or painful ear to spoil a holiday. Mardi, Geelong’s own ear nurse from Crystal Clear Ear clinic, sees many people who come home with a story of painful or blocked ears either from the plane flight or from swimming with an ear full of wax. “Lots of people don’t realise they have wax in their ears and swimming on holidays, particularly in hot, humid climates, causes the wax to swell, making them deaf or causing pain and infection,” Mardi said. An ear check prior to a holiday is a good investment and a good travel tip. Some people suffer with pressure changes during the flight because the eustachian tube
that joins the throat to the middle part of the ear doesn’t work well. The popping and crackling noises when swallowing or chewing is the sound of air entering the ear, which is needed to equalise the air pressure on either side of the eardrum. Chewing gum, drinking water or pinching the nose and blowing all help to open up the tube, preventing pain or damage to the ears. To prevent problems some people need the extra help of some decongestant nose drops started within a day of the flight and during the flight prior to landing. Those who have had trouble with blocked, waxy ears in the past should make time to see Mardi in Pako before their holiday. Call Crystal Clear Ear Clinic on 1300 260 750 or book online at www.crystalclearclinic.com.au.

Bringing back memories With an estimated 6000 people living with dementia in the Barwon region, providing appropriate support to them as they age is vitally important. Uniting AgeWell Kalkee community Nangatta aims to care for seniors with dementia in a positive, dignified and holistic way, with 24-hour high-level clinical care by qualified and experienced staff. The dementia-specific residence in Belmont offers old-world charm with modern amenities and services. The home is decorated with vintage items to spark memories while a sensory garden with fragrant and tactile plants, vegetable garden, hen
house and outdoor kitchen brings a sense of purpose, comfort and security as residents freely enjoy the space. An inviting family room provides a welcoming environment for celebrations and casual gettogethers. One of Nangatta’s strengths is its dynamic and engaging lifestyle and activities program. There are frequent outings in the community bus to places residents enjoyed visiting when growing up in the region. On Wednesdays, partners are invited to join the trip, enabling them to share the experience with residents. Music and animals play an important role in
people with dementia and many Nangatta residents continue playing their instruments or live with their pets, including dogs, birds and fish. Uniting AgeWell recognises that everyone’s needs are different. The not-for-profit organisation also provides independent housing, social support, therapy programs and home care packages in the Greater Geelong region. The flexible and responsive services ensure clients get the best out of life, no matter where they are on their ageing journey. Phone 5243 6688 or visit unitingagewell.org to arrange a personal tour of Nangatta or find out how Uniting AgeWell can provide support.

Scooters Australia in Charles St, Newcomb, is where old-fashioned service is standard for all customers. Licensed dealers Mark and Susan Dillon train their local team with the motto: “It’s not about providing the best scooter to the customer, it’s about providing the scooter that meets the customer’s needs the best”. The trained staff takes the time to listen to the customer’s requests, evaluate the best solutions and provide a range of options that best suit the requirements of the end user - all done with a smile and a distinct lack of “sales pressure”. “We stock Geelong’s largest range of scooters, to provide products to meet everyone’s needs, and budget,” Mark said. “At any time we can have up to 20 to 25 scooters in stock with a mix of small, medium, golf, large and travel scooters.” Scooters Australia Geelong provides extended warranty on all new scooters sold at no extra charge. They provide time extensions to nearly all the manufacturers’ warranties and also cover all labour and travel charges for the first 12 months within 50km of the Geelong CBD. All medium and large scooters now come with free 12 months RACV roadside assist, saving the purchaser up to $102.50. This provides customers with peace of mind and the offer is exclusive to Scooters Australia. For further peace of mind, the business provides a free tube with every scooter sold. Some models come with free battery upgrade to premium batteries and all scooters include, at no charge, a high-visibility safety flag, on-site training, follow-up training if required and a free safety guide. Mark says this is arguably the Geelong region’s best value, back-up, warranty and after-sales ser-

Live the retirement you deserve. A sense of belonging in a safe, vibrant community. The satisfaction of luxurious, resort style surroundings. The freedom to live your best life. Resale3bedroom,2bathroomsinglegarageAvailableNOW
Freedom to enjoy community where we’d have the opportunity to get to know everyone. “Geelong Grove looked like a holiday resort and as soon as we walked in the manager made us feel incredibly welcome. We bought off the plan then and there.” Norma has now lived at Geelong Grove for 15 years. She loves the village’s full sized bowling green and is part of several clubs within the retirement community. Norma is also a member of the residents’ committee. Her advice to anyone considering moving into a retirement community is to have a look at the facilities to make sure they are happy with the unit they intend to purchase and, if possible, meet the other residents. “Retirement really is what you make of it. “For me, the move to Geelong Grove has meant that I’ve had more time to pursue my interests and hobbies and create new friendships.” Geelong Grove invites everyone to come and experience retirement living. Call 1300 160 170 to tour the community and view the available units.

For Norma Dennert, retirement was never going to be about slowing down. Norma and her late husband Kevin retired about 20 years ago and soon after purchased a motor home so that they could spend their retirement pursuing their dream of travelling around Australia together. What they didn’t anticipate was how difficult it was to keep up with the maintenance of their large family home while they were on the road. “Our daughter was tending to our garden but had to travel a fair distance to do so. “After a while we decided we’d have much more freedom and flexibility if we bought something smaller,” said Norma. Norma and Kevin quickly decided that a home in a retirement community would offer them the independence and flexibility they were looking for. After visiting a number of retirement villages they chose the Geelong Grove retirement community. “My late husband and I looked at other villages but they were too big and too clustered. “We were looking for a smaller retirement

Whether it’s for business or pleasure, Truck Car Rentals has transport requirements covered. Truck Car Rentals has an extensive range of vehicles to suit a variety of requirements, owner Graeme says. “Being a small local operation, our prices are more competitive than bigger companies. “Plus, we can offer a high level of customer service because we know the local needs.” Truck Car Rentals recently expanded its fleet to include 46 seater buses, adding to its 12 and 22 seaters. “A lot of schools around Geelong use our services when they need extra buses,” Graeme says. “We have a lot of local clubs and groups hire the smaller buses as well as families for get-togethers or outings.” Truck Car Rentals has several enclosed trucks suitable for do-it-yourself removals, requiring only a car licence. A range of light commercials and vans, tray trucks, cars and single-axle trailers for the weekend handyman are also available. “Our rates are lower during the week so that adds flexibility to small business vehicle requirements,” Graeme says. Truck Car Rentals also has everything up to prime movers and trailers, great for logistics businesses trying to cope with extra demand. “If your vehicle is in for a service or repairs, Truck Car Rentals has the answer. “Whatever your needs, we can assist in finding the right vehicle for the job.” Truck Car Rentals is at 215 Station St, Corio, phone 5275 8288 or visit truckcarrentals.com.au.

SPORT Seeking shelter – and a catch! ON THE BITE Chris Pitman
CATCH: Zac Stocks practises his handball with Cats best and fairest Mark Blicavs.
Ex-Cat is the inside man By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Fresh from coming a cropper against a former team-mate last week, Geelong faces another familiar face on Sunday. Forward Josh Walker will be sharing his inside knowledge with his new Lions team-mates while getting used to the strange feeling of tackling his old sparring partners. Playing against former team-mates has always unsettled Geelong for some reason – the Cats struggled against a Gary Ablett-led Gold Coast first up as well. They also escaped with a nine-point win against Essendon for Paul Chapman’s first game against his old club. Walker reckons his inside knowledge might just help Brisbane spring a surprise victory over
the Cats – and it won’t be the first time that’s happened, either. Cats fans still shudder at the memory of round 13, 2013 at the Gabba. While not a premiership team-mate like Steve Johnson or Chappy, Walker nevertheless spent five seasons at the cattery. “I think I know pretty well what a lot of their players were working on for five years behind closed doors,” Walker said in preparation for the game. “I think there’s definitely some tips I could give boys who maybe have an individual match-up. “They’ll know my game but I’ll know theirs as well, and I’ll be able to give the coach a few insights on the rest of the team. Hopefully it’s advantage us.” Still, under normal circumstances tipsters
would have no hesitation in ticking a Geelong home win against Brisbane. But a topsy-turvy round two has demonstrated that no team is safe, any team can pull out a win and structure and match-ups need to be matched with desire and effort. Brisbane will be without its injured skipper Tom Rockliff, midfield ace Dayne Beams will also be missing and there are questions marks over others. But injury plagued teams won last weekend, so that is no basis for comfort. Coach Chris Scott is adamant that restoring the midfield’s clearance rate to the levels achieved against Hawthorn is easily rectified. The Brisbane game offers an opportunity for Geelong’s midfield to gel rather than rely on individual performances.
Bendigo battleground: travelling goes with the game By JOSIP ZILIC Another PlayStation 4 NPL2 road trip beckons for North Geelong as it heads to Bendigo in round seven action. Bendigo went down to Goulbourn Valley last weekend and have only been able to score one goal to date, albeit in their first win of the year against the more fancied Eastern Lions a fortnight ago. Opposition teams have found it hard to break Bendigo down at home and we expect this weekend to be no different. North Geelong came away from an action packed, high level performance against Kingston with a 2-2 draw that has drawn many positive response from the fans. After a cagey start, Kingston got off to a somewhat fortunate lead after the Warriors midfield clumsily lost possession in the middle of the park. Swooping on the loose ball to clear was Kingston’s Zdenek Koukal who hit the ball so well that it sailed over everyone including Daniel Zilic in goals to clip the bar and slot into the net for the lead. Sparked into life, the Warriors offered plenty going forward but were initially wasteful with their chances. Kingston was awarded a penalty in the 25th
minute to add more spark to the match however it was overturned after the referee and his assistant convened. With the sense of luck and a lift in tempo the Warriors approached the second half with ascendancy, and with Kene Eze coming on to replace Burkhan Koca the options to goal increased. On 67 minutes it was Eze who got past defenders to open up the chance for Michael Anderson and the latter finishing well to level the scores. Warriors’ pressure continued – several attempts hitting the woodwork seemed to encourage them – and at 75 minutes Darren Lewis headed the ball onto the bar followed up by Matt Thorne for the lead. With minutes left in a prolonged injury time the home side found one last chance and it fell to youngster Kosta Droutsas who collected the spilled ball – after Zilic charged out of his box to close down a contest – and slotted perfectly for the draw. “We knew players like Mitrovic and Karpeh would be a handful but we also have some good players making an impact, it was great to see the range of tempo we offered to respond and continue on”, said Colina after the match.

The Barwon River estuary offered shelter during unfavourable weather over the past week. Kevin Hunter and Jimmy Robinson anchored up the Thunderbolt section early Sunday morning, catching elephant fish to 2.5kg when the tide eased. Squid on a running sinker with just enough weight to hold the bottom worked best. Bream were also present in reasonable numbers. I caught some to 35cm during the week on Bass yabbies. Queenscliff was a standout for whiting, which averaged 40cm. The grass beds again produced fish in numbers, with tenderised squid fished on long lenders working well. The Swan Bay channel fished well for gummy shark to 6kg during the evenings, with silver trevally and pinkie snapper also biting. During daylight hours grass beds near the mouth were exceptional for squid, which took size-3 jigs cast ahead of the drift. Corio Bay soft plastic anglers caught pinkie snapper, salmon and flathead. Fishing structures such as piers or yachts was best, while Gulp turtleback worms in Pumpkin Green took plenty of fish. Lorne Pier helped anglers tangle with King George whiting. Pippies were the bait of choice, with anglers doing best on the sandy patches just out from the pier. Down the Western District, southern bluefin tuna remained in close off Portland’s North Shore. Anglers able to head further out to the continental shelf encountered not only tuna but albacore too. Hugh Hanson was keen to try his new Norries Metal Wasaby lure at The Lake of 1000 Casts, or Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, when he arrived on the weekend. Hugh was almost finished his session when he hooked up a brown trout, which measured an outstanding 70cm and 3.9kg after an intense fight. Hugh also managed to bank a redfin of 47cm in the same session. Josh Smith tied spinner bait lures from the reservoir’s rock wall, catching some chunky redfin late afternoon. Tony Hynds took dad Jim up to Lake Jindabyne over the Easter break. The pair caught 17 brown trout to 2.5kg using downriggers set at 14m and 16m. Next week should provide chances to catch elephant fish on the Barwon estuary up from the Sheepwash, while whiting should remain plentiful at Queenscliff on the run-in tide. Anglers wanting to tangle with a tuna should even consider fishing in close at Warrnambool, while Wurdee Boluc might be worth a 1000 casts for brown trout and redfin.

best distance to easily pass the Olympic qualifying standard of 20.50 metres. His throw of 21.21 metres in Hobart in February moved him to second on the Australian alltime list. Birkinhead’s best is now just five centimetres shy of the Australian record, held by his coach Scott Martin. In 2010, Birkinhead was a finalist at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and in 2012 he won bronze at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona. Two years later he took out the national shot put title which automatically qualified him for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, where he placed fifth. Birkinhead won his third national title in Brisbane in 2015 as well as taking home gold in Leiden, Netherlands at the Golden Spike. Geelong shot putter Damien Birkinhead has been selected for his debut Olympics, one of 28 new athletes to join the team for Rio. Athletics Australia head coach Craig Hilliard said Birkinhead won selection after improving his performances. “The athletes named so far are a fantastic mix of youth and experience making us well placed for Rio and for beyond to Tokyo,” Hilliard said. “There have been a lot of young athletes that have stepped up in the Olympic year such as Damien Birkinhead.” Birkinhead’s selection was announced this week at a gala dinner at Sydney Olympic Park following the conclusion of the four-day Australian Championships. The 22 year-old Birkinhead improved his personal best by 81 centimetres in eight months. Although a calf injury meant he was unable to throw at the trials, he earlier threw a personal
