■ Nelly refuses to be cut down by machete attack injuries...
Back on side By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS IT’S hard to think of a more shining light for wayward youth than the ever-optimistic Nelly Yoa. The Dandenong man, who narrowly survived a horrific machete attack at a Sudanese beauty pageant in 2011, has taken on a mentoring role with members of the notorious Apex Gang. He is also the subject of an inspiring short-documentary Offside, due for release this month. Mr Yoa considers himself lucky to be standing, having nearly bled to death from the unprovoked attack. He was told by doctors at the time he may not walk again after being slashed several times on the knee, elbow and wrist. A year later, he was walking with a distinct limp with only a 20 per cent chance his nerve-damaged right arm would repair. Undaunted, he fully recovered – he learnt how to walk again, battled post-traumatic stress and silenced the doubts that he would make it back on the soccer park. He has recently returned from playing in a Chinese soccer league. Over coming weeks, he will try out for A-League sides. Remarkably, he has recovered his full sprinting ability – something the winger/striker considers one of his strengths. Another of Mr Yoa’s strengths is his motivational speech. He sat down recently to coach some Apex Gang members, many who were unemployed and estranged from families.
“What I said was try to keep yourself busy and involved in other things. Go back to school, get a job and get yourself known in the community. “Do something in the community. Not just their community but in the Caucasian community as well. “Act like an Aussie – that’s the only way the Sudanese name can be shown in a positive way.” Mr Yoa believes “Aussies aren’t racists”. “You’ve just got to understand the way they socialise.” Recently, he turned down a spot in the South Sudanese national soccer team’s African Cup of Nations campaign. “I’ll take my chances with the Socceroos.” In the 15-minute doco Offside, there’s a re-enactment of the assault and how Mr Yoa rebuilt himself mentally and physically. “It’s an inspirational type of feel-good story. I know people with ACL (knee ligament) injuries who have had operations and they tend to give up. “Hopefully this will motivate them to pursue their dream.” After four years, he got over the anger of the “lenient” three-month jail term that his attacker received. “As much as I hate to admit it, I have forgiven him. “I can’t do revenge. If I get a criminal record, I have a lot to lose.” See the trailer for Offside at https://t.co/NssSriT7GC

Market birthday in store
Wisdom’s grain of truth By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
Irene Rice has lived in Dandenong for all of her 90 years. 151096 ble storey apartments and townhouses are swallowing humble single-storey homes and backyards. “If they build a high-rise next to me, I’m not going to move away,” Ms Rice said. Ms Rice still walks 500 metres to Dandenong’s shops and occasionally drives
to a Mt Waverley spinners and weavers group. She has only recently stopped mowing her own lawn. She took some time to recover after the sudden loss of her beloved husband Arthur 20 years ago. The pair had known each other since Dandenong Primary School and socialised
at town hall dances at weekends. Ms Rice reflected that young people now want things even if they don’t have the money while her generation didn’t buy things until they could afford it. “They want to start where we finished,” she said.

IN OCTOBER, Dandenong Market will celebrate its 150th anniversary. In honour of this significant occasion, the market is collecting photographs and stories from the local community to be published in a book later in the year. Dandenong Market’s general manager Jennifer Hibbs said: “Dandenong Market has been the cornerstone of bustling community life for almost 150 years. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the contributions that the local community has made to the market – we are immensely proud of our long-held market traditions and the role we have played as a local meeting place. "Markets are most loved for their people both traders and shoppers – and we hope to capture Dandenong’s market characters in our historical book. “We want to hear stories from locals, traders and visitors to the market and hear about what the market means to you.” To share your photographs, stories and memories with the market, please email info@dandenongmarket.com.au or call 9701 3850.

THERE’S more than a grain of old Dandenong in long-time resident Irene Rice. Ms Rice, who was in pleasant shock after a surprise 90th birthday party on 3 April, can vividly recall her “wonderful life” entirely residing in Dandenong. The celebrations started with a stretchlimo ride with four great-grandchildren from Ms Rice’s home to pick up her sister Peg in Beaconsfield. She was just told she was about to go somewhere special. An hour later they arrived to a cheering mob of 40 family from across the state and interstate, as well as another 40 friends, for lunch at Dandenong Club. “It was magnificent,” Ms Rice said. “I couldn’t sleep all night, I was so hypedup.” The grain theme has popped up in Ms Rice’s life in bizarre ways. Her daughter Marion married into the Barley family and Ms Rice’s car rego number begins with OAT. For the past 60 years she has lived in Grandview Avenue, barely more than a block away from her Herbert Street childhood home. She is well and truly the oldest person in the street, she said. Three generations of her family - parents, siblings and all six of her children went through Dandenong Primary School. Her father Laurie Bending was one of the foundation members of the recentlyclosed Dandenong Bowls Club. Her current £1700 home was the first built on the former paddocks that used to be lit by Guy Fawkes bonfires. It was a time when kids fished for eels on the swampy banks of Dandenong Creek and played games in the street. They’re some of the “old ways” that have disappeared, Ms Rice said. Now her streetscape is changing. Dou-

Rezone push for more green wedge changes By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS LANDHOLDERS are making a new push to rezone more than 1000 hectares from Greater Dandenong’s green wedge zone. The proponents have separately objected to Greater Dandenong Council’s Amendment C143 that largely maintains the status quo. Among their wishes are for a Chinese theme park, a housing estate interspersed with flood-retarding levees and industrial estates on the region’s open paddocks. Defenders of the South-East Green Wedge spokesman Barry Ross said the mooted changes would nearly halve Greater Dandenong’s 2400-hectare green wedge zone. “There’s precious little left now. “We’re concerned about anything being taken out of the green wedge because it has been incrementally reduced over time. “We’ve got to hold the line. As soon as they breach the wall, they’ll all come galloping through. “They’re absolutely keen to make a killing.” The council’s amendment thwarts Keysborough Golf Club’s hopes to sell up its 76-hectare course for a housing estate. Several members, including club captain Darrell Swindells, have submitted their dismay- especially given a majority of councillors voted to back the club’s plan. Among other objectors is Keysborough South Landholders Group which is seeking to rezone 570 hectares into a “rural living zone”. It proposes the reduction of four-hectare minimum lots in the area bounded by Hutton, Springvale, Pillars and Perry roads to 0.2 hectares - or half an acre. It argued the extra 1000-plus homes within a mix of levees and open space
Barry Ross stands against plans to carve up a Keysborough golf course for Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS housing. 152220 would net the council $3.34 million in annual rates revenue. Their voluminous submission was buttressed by consultants’ reports on ecology, waterways, Aboriginal cultural sites, soil quality, traffic management and economics. Landowners are also seeking industrial re-zoning of 337 hectares in the so-called Bangholme Triangle which is bound by Eumemmering Creek, EastLink and Harwood and Frankston-Dandenong roads. In his submission, John Guastella argued that the land would be required as Greater Dandenong runs short of vacant industrial land. The existing “real supply” of such land could be exhausted in as few as three years, Mr Guastella stated. A state planning panel refused a similar proposal, which was backed by the council, in 2012. Mexin Australia submitted its desire
to transform a 43-hectare “degraded” lot at 616 Frankston-Dandenong Road into a “spacious, garden-based” theme park. The council had failed to recognise uses with tourism potential in the Bangholme East precinct, it stated. Mexin stated the council’s feedback was it was unlikely to support a GoldCoast style theme park but perhaps would back a low-scale, family-style resort with “sufficient strategic justification” Other submitters included Clarke Road Developments and Earth Solutions Group, who want development constraints lifted from 46 hectares of reclaimed former landfill in Springvale South. Reeds Consulting, representing owners of 80 hectares of farmland at 250320 Glasscocks Road, Lyndhurst, argued rezoning would help take advantage of a proposed inland rail port. It would be ideal for a “new commu-
nity” of shops, home, retirement village and open space, it stated. Councillor Peter Brown said the golf club’s submission had the best chance of success when councillors were expected to vote on the amendment this month. There was “no reason” why the club’s land shouldn’t be within the urban growth boundary, assuming a “reasonable percentage” of public open space and significant trees were retained. Cr Brown also supported the Keysborough South Landholders Group push for what “could be one of the most beautiful living areas in Melbourne”. “A lot of the green wedge land has been land-banked by investors for the inevitable change to come. “So why not give people the opportunity to benefit from their investment?” In support of Amendment C143, councillor Matthew Kirwan said there was no clear case for Keysborough South Landholders Group land being suitable for housing. “The area south of Hutton Road is a flood prone area with no infrastructure and significant indigenous, post-contact heritage and environmental value. “Infrastructure is important - if we haven’t yet met the schooling, public transport and community facility needs of the new estates of Keysborough why would we open up another area?” Cr Kirwan said the rezoning push was futile given both major state political parties had no interest in changing the urban growth boundaries. Most of the 70 submitters were in favour of the amendment, he said. The amendment is expected to be considered by the council on 26 April and by a state government planning panel in July.
Thieves' scam to take permanent test drive By LACHLAN MOORHEAD POLICE are investigating a series of car thefts from dealerships in Casey and Dandenong, in which a thief purporting to be a customer ends up driving off in the cars. Police confirmed they are looking into a number of car thefts from used and new car dealerships in the Berwick, Kingston, Bayside and Frankston areas. Star News has spoken to the owner of a Dandenong dealership, who had a car stolen from his lot, and who is also aware of similar crimes occurring at a Cranbourne dealership. While some of the cars have been recovered by police, several others are still missing.
Melbourne Online Motors owner Norman Favaloro was away from his car lot in Dandenong’s Lonsdale Street last Wednesday 30 March when a customer came in to inspect a car. The customer was interested in a second-hand Ford XR6 Turbo and asked the employee what the engine sounded like. After the salesman started the car and then lifted up the bonnet, the customer walked past him into the driver’s seat and sped off. Mr Favaloro said the car had still not been found. “Someone has to have balls to come here in broad daylight, jump into someone else’s car and take off with it,” he said. “It’s not unheard of but you never think
Norm Favaloro, the owner of Melbourne Online Motors. 152471 Picture: GARY SISSONS you will have that customer that does it. “It’s just frustrating ... we’re a small, independent business.” Mr Favaloro said he was aware of a similar theft occurring at a Cranbourne dealership,
but that car had apparently been recovered. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
A DANDENONG man found by police in a car with false number plates has been charged over a firearm shop burglary. Police pulled over the Mazda ute at the corner of Keneally and Steven streets, Dandenong, on 3 April at 6.30am. Inside the ute, the officers found drugs, ammunition, as well as a stolen shot gun and three stolen rifles, Detective Sergeant Jason Owen of Greater Dandenong CIU said. The guns had been allegedly stolen during a burglary of a Mornington Peninsula firearms shop. The man was remanded in custody, charged with offences including possession of a drug-of-dependence and firearm theft.
Intruder flees in truck A MAN has broken into an industrial site office and fled in a truck from police in Oppenheim Drive, Dandenong South. Offsite security guards alerted police after spotting the male on the office’s CCTV, about 3.45am on Sunday 3 April. During his escape, the male drove a small, white moving-van towards attending police officers and fled north on Hammond Road. The truck displayed false number-plates, Detective Sergeant Jason Owen of Greater Dandenong CIU said.
A POLICE car slid on a fuel spill and hit a street sign while attending a car crash in the rain in Dandenong. The original crash occurred in Attenborough Street about 1.45pm on Wednesday 6 April, causing a driver and two passengers to be taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Family put body and soul into Dandenong WHAT’S IN A NAME DELVES INTO THE FASCINATING STORIES AND PERSONALITIES BEHIND SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST-KNOWN STREET NAMES. THIS WEEK THE JOURNAL LOOKS AT THE UNUSUAL HISTORY OF THE GARNER FAMILY, AFTER WHOM GARNER LANE IS NAMED. JAMES William Garner was killed in a bull attack in 1913. He was a father of seven children and a well-respected man and his death shocked the tight-knit community. During the late 1800s he’d worked as an undertaker at 10 Walker Street, Dandenong, ran a mortuary in nearby Crump Lane and was also involved in a blacksmith business based in Lonsdale Street. The family name was originally spelled Garner but James altered it to Garnar to distinguish himself from other people associated with the Garner spelling. His widow Margaret continued the family business after his death, promoting “first class hearses, mourning
WHAT’S IN A NAME? coaches and all accessories for local and suburban funerals at short notice”. She struggled to continue the family business in the tough post-war years - the onset of the era of ‘motorfunerals’ seemed to create difficulties for her as the farm-based horse-drawn equipment became obsolete during the 1920s. In 1927 James’s eldest son, William James, and grandson Len, 15, took over the business. They changed the business name
from JW Garner to WJ Garnar and Son. The business relocated and operated from 44 Walker Street and it was behind this premises that Garner Lane was located until 2009. William was known for leading funeral possessions on foot along Lonsdale Street. His numerous sisters contributed to the family business, primarily in trimming and decorating the pine coffins. In the 1930s, a severe flood hit Dandenong and William opened his mortuary to discover that two coffins - one empty and one occupied - had been swept away. They were later recovered from the creek in Mordialloc. Len eventually replaced his father
and continued to run the business until he sold it to Le Pine Funerals in 1950. Garner Lane is now on the southern side of the new Dandenong Civic Centre, providing a pedestrian and
vehicle connection between Lonsdale and Thomas streets. Want to know the history behind a street name in Greater Dandenong? Let us know and we’ll find out! Email journal@starnewsgroup.com.au

A PRO-sky rail academic’s arguments were drowned by a cauldron of opposition at a Noble Park public meeting on 5 April. Ian Woodcock, a design-andsocial-context lecturer at RMIT University, traded barbs with local residents, Liberal MPs, and No Sky Rail members from Murumbeena and Frankston rail corridor suburbs. There were plenty of interjections at the Public Transport Users Association-hosted forum as Mr Woodcock presented picturesque ideas for developing the space under the elevated rail. He said sky rail was likely to happen so “make sure it’s as good as it can possibly be”, he said. The community needed to establish a ‘friends group’ to assert what it wanted under the sky rail. “You’ve got the advantage of getting in early before it’s built.” Some of the options were a bicycle “superhighway”, a trail under the railway tracks that rises above intersecting roads. Others included a corridor of biologically diverse parks and gardens and artistic light projections on the pylons. The forum hears that water play spaces were installed in the Netherlands and in New York, a former elevated rail track, dubbed the Highline, has developed into a major tourism attraction. The Level Crossing Removal Authority has closed a public submission process on what to do with the “11 MCGs” of public open space under the tracks. Noble Park resident Dawn Vernon said she leaned in favour of the sky rail, particularly due to the link-

However she told the meeting she was concerned about ongoing funding to maintain the under-rail parks. “I’m concerned that these parklands aren’t going to look as pretty as these pictures.” Resident Gaye Guest questioned the aptness of sky rail concepts in low-density residential areas. “You’re showing us big cities but we’re suburbs. We’re not the CBD.” Mr Woodcock was forced into repeated assertions that his research was “completely independent” and not compromised by government funding. “My salary comes from the university only,” Mr Woodcock said.
Picture: Level Crossing Removal Authority
He and Melbourne University academic John Arnold had come under attack from the Liberal Party after their research was cited in support of the sky rail project. Mr Woodcock said he had no say nor prior knowledge of the sky rail project itself. His research had been funded by a previous government, he told the forum. Some in the audience voiced concern that the meeting had become politically hijacked. In response to goading from upper house MP David Davis on the issue, Mr Woodcock told him: “If that’s what you believe ... goes on in universities, you might as well leave.” Mr Woodcock declined to answer MP Inga Peulich’s requests on the grounds that he couldn’t make “political comments”. The project, which removes nine level crossings in the Dandenong rail corridor, has sparked protest
groups and criticism from neighbouring residents. A Mile Creek Residents Group in Noble Park has recently voiced concern about noise, loss of privacy and unsightly, graffiti-strewn pylons as well as the tracks being shifted closer to their homes. Mr Woodcock said the Springvale railway station rail-under-road design was surprisingly dark, and produced a lesser experience than elevated railway stations “with a view”. Mr Woodcock was challenged on the impact of increased freight trains connected to the under-construction inland rail port at Lyndhurst. He stated the sky rail’s modern tracks would be less noisy than the existing clunky rail and boom gate bells. Any noise dissipates upwards, he said. Council fears sky rail will destroy Noble Park’s “village feel”, page 13.

PERHAPS it was all just a bad dream for a man found passed out in a car parked in the middle of Wellington Road, Mulgrave, in the early morning of 9 February. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told that the man’s foot was still on the brake - the only thing restraining the white Chrysler while he was slumped unconscious. The man was rushed to hospital. About 2.5 grams of ice was found on him along with $1020 cash, two mobile phones and a deal bag of ice in his car console. The man was arrested at the court last month. He’d never seen the Chrysler, nor the drug paraphernalia, he told the police. He told police he’d been home on the night of the incident - and simply went to bed at 11pm.

AN ACCUSED drug trafficker showed some canny handling of the imperial system of weights and measures in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. He denied to the judge he had 454 grams of cannabis - equivalent to a dealer’s onepound allotment. The man said he instead had 340 grams, which could be broken down to three lots of quar-
ter-pound deals, plus another 20 or 30 grams. “See, the client knows,” the judge said. The few people who seemed to have a handle on pounds and ounces were drug-dealers, he noted. A SEQUEL to last week’s Greater Dandenong councillor all-in stoush over granting $100 to a senior citizens club Mother’s Day lunch. Councillor Matthew Kirwan is launching a motion at a council meeting on 7 April for the council to set its community grant priorities once a year. “We... avoid having to debate individual applications possibly every month in a time consuming and potentially divisive debate,” his preamble states. Not to mention the “unintentional embarrassment to individual groups caught in the crossfire”. THE Journal’s story on Garner Lane (see page four) piqued the interest of Anthony Hamilton. Anthony saw the story on the Dandenong Journal website and wrote: “My father used to play midweek cricket with Garner. They would get there in one of the hearses. Gear in the back with Garner’s dog.”

A NOBLE Park school is showing other schools the way to ‘Walk’ - using Walker Learning techniques, that is. Yarraman Oaks hosted about 40 teachers from around the state to show them the program in action on 26 February. Teacher Ellen Hutchison said the teaching method put each child’s interests at the centre of their learning. “We’ve been doing it for about eight years,” she said. “Two years ago some of our teachers got accredited. “We did the same when we started - we visited other schools that were already doing it. “It’s nice to have it in theory, but it’s nicer to see it in operation.” Ms Hutchison said a Walker Learning Centre mentor kept the school up to date with any developments in the methodology. She said she was “chuffed” that the 180-student school was serving as an example.

Do not raid this shop By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS JIMMY Li didn’t take prisoners when confronted by two would-be armed robbers in his Dandenong milk bar. One of the two female hooded crooks pointed a long-arm or pole as they angrily demanded cash from Mr Li about 1.30pm on 3 April. From behind the counter, the 61-year-old quickly launched a counter-attack. He grabbed a steel pole, pointed it twice at the assailants and repeatedly yelled “f ... off”. Mr Li chased the failed bandits out the front door. The pair escaped in an awaiting blue Holden sedan with no number plates. “I don’t care if they are holding a gun,” Mr Li told the Journal. “I was with the Chinese army for four years.” In Mr Li’s past eight years at the store, he has chased off several robbers armed with knives.

dark because of the proliferation of no-gooddoers. In the past week, he’s also reported to police about a group who shoplifted chips, chocolates and sweets en masse, and a man in an orange fluoro vest who passed off a fake $50 note. Each incident is captured on his four in-shop CCTV cameras. Mr Li has unsuccessfully requested Greater Dandenong Council install an outside camera on the corner of Weller and Hemmings Street. He says it may help deter the burgeoning drug deals, street girls, assaults and home break-ins at the corner. “Too many people come here,” he said. “Too many bad boys.” Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Second shave overshadows first A FEW cuts and colours have raised more than $7500 for the Leukaemia Foundation. Dandenong man Colin Gibbons held his second annual World’s Greatest Shave event at Dandenong Workers Social Club on Sunday 13 March. “We had a hugely successful day,” he said. “I was blown away. “We did not expect it to go as well as that. “We thought the numbers would be down a little bit because it’s a long weekend.” But the numbers were up more
than $4500 from the inaugural event last year, with a $7594.60 grand total. “We’re going to make it huge next year,” Mr Gibbons said. About 20 people shaved their heads at the event including Barbara Collins, who farewelled the hair from half of her head for $100 and drummed up another $100 pledge to take off the remaining locks. “I lost count of the people getting their hair coloured,” Mr Gibbons said. “My daughter ran out of a couple of colours at one stage.” The 18-year-old, Yao, shaved her head last year and braved the feat

China light treatment
Charges after robbery stabbing
By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
A MAN has been charged following an armed robbery at a Noble Park milk bar last month in which a shop attendant was stabbed several times. The 31-year-old Springvale man spent the night under police guard after detectives from the Dandenong Embona Taskforce found him at a medical facility on Tuesday 5 April. The arrest comes after the incident at the Buckley Street milk bar on Saturday 26 March. The man was interviewed by police and charged with armed robbery, intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury, and assault.
THERE’S one chance of treatment for Endeavour Hills nine-year-old Piotrus, and it needs to happen quickly. The options to treat his brain tumour have run out at Australian hospitals. All that’s left is a little known cutting-edge light treatment only offered in China. But as Piotrus’s mother Jola Styczen said she would be filled with regret if she does nothing to save her son’s life. Fortunately, Piotrus is a fighter. With thick polygon-shaped stitching in his skull from his latest bout of surgery, he refuses to skip juniors training at White Star Dandenong Soccer Club. And the club is backing its player to the hilt, hosting an entertaining picnic fundraiser on 16 April to help cover the exorbitant costs of travel, accommodation and treatment. By coincidence, the event - full of sizzling Polish foods and sausages, singers, a raffle offering signed Socceroos tops, and Melbourne Victory-run activities - falls on Piotrus’s birthday. Ms Styczen, who has been frantically scanning the world for a solution, said she was amazed how the club rallied behind her family. “We didn’t ask for this,” she said. “The club just rang me and said they were going to do this for Piotrus.” Piotrus’s father Rafal and uncle Irek have been long-term White Star players and prominent supporters and Irek is a former coach. Club vice-president Robert Drozdz said the 120-member club had never rallied behind a player in such a way, but it summed up its ethos as “the community club” in Dandenong. Mr Drozdz took a day off work recently to make a concerted drive for sponsors for the day. “We consider all of our participants as family.
Water words
Piotrus, front fourth right, has the backing of his White Star teammates at training. 152599 “We want to raise funds so Piotrus can live life like any other kid.” Ms Styczen said her boy just doesn’t want any more surgery on top of an intense radiation and chemotherapy program to first eradicate the cancer in 2010. She said the radiation treatment may have inadvertently triggered further tumours, due to Piotrus’s initially undetect-
ed genetic mutation. Given Piotrus has a mutation of the P53 tumour suppressor, the new photodynamic therapy - “a bath of light” - in China was the only option, she said. Vacancies for the treatment open in mid-April. It’s now just a matter of raising the necessary money.
The fundraiser Picnic for Piotrus is at Greaves Reserve, 17 Bennet Street, Dandenong, on 16 April from 1pm. Donations can be made to bank account name Piotrus Fundraiser, BSB: 033380, account number: 499755. More details from Robert Drozdz on 0421 096 238 and Adam Kawa on 0422 647 557.

TEN With Dandenong North’s Wilson Fernandez, creator of the Australian Nativity Scene What is something people don’t know about you? I love knowing more about the universe, stars and galaxies, alien life and more. The subject is quite interesting and fascinating. What was your most memorable moment? Migrating to Australia is one of the most memorable moments as it changed my life for good. I call Australia my home and get home sick when I travel overseas. What would your last meal be? My mum’s spicy coconut king prawn curry with hog plums served on a bed of brown rice and fried Spanish mackerel. Yum. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? Michael Jackson in concert.

What is your favourite television show? I have two favourite television shows that I love to watch any time or any given day. They are I love Lucy and the Cosby Show. What is your favourite book? I’m not much into books.
I love reading news and magazines about politics, science, space, aliens, gardening and travel books. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? These are my six guests in no particular order: Michelle Pfeiffer, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Maria Sharapova, Sachin Tendulkar and Princess Diana. What has been your most embarrassing moment? When I ran into the mirror wall at DFO, Moorabbin, about 16 years ago. I was with my family and friends shopping for clothes. My then-three-year-old daughter was trying to shut the fitting room door with her hand that could have potentially jammed her fingers, if closed. I saw her doing this activity from the corner of my eye and suddenly charged for her safety. Without realising, I bashed into the wall size mirror with a big
bang. Yet I managed to get up and save my daughter from that incident. Everyone around was shocked and laughed while this happened but no one realised why I ran into the mirror. It was later I revealed what actually happened. It was the reflection of the fitting room that was seen in the mirror. Poor me! What era would you like to live in? I would love to be in the future era, as the generation of the future would possibly explore living life beyond Earth. What was your first or best concert? The Melody Makers concert was the biggest star-studded night. Anyone can be a Take 10 subject and answer our list of light-hearted questions. Night to help Fiji tragedy
243 Thomas Street, Dandenong
By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A NIGHT of dance, music and food - Fijian style - is to be held in Dandenong to raise funds for Cyclone Winston victims. One of the organisers, Akeneta Oliver, is preparing a Fijian earth-oven to cook traditional meals for the fundraiser at Dandenong Uniting Church on 16 April. She is part of the 30-strong Fijian congregation at the church, many who know family and friends killed by the catego-
ry-five cyclone in February. “It’s quite personal for us. They have lost a lot of homes and lives, and still need food and shelter.” Church minister John Queripel said it was hoped to raise more than $1000 relief funds at the concert, dinner and silent auction. “This is a great way for the wider community to express their support for people often with nothing left.” An estimated 32,000 homes
were damaged or destroyed and 350,000 people were affected when the cyclone struck Fiji on 20 February. It’s been described as the island nation’s worst-recorded cyclone, killing more than 40 people. The event is at the church at 32 Scott Street on 16 April, 7pm. Entry $20 (including meal), free for children under 12. Details from Mary Ann Spencer on 0477 087 826 or at dandenonguca@gmail.com.

Produce swap catches on KEYSBOROUGH gardeners are putting their excess produce to good use. And it’s not just greens on the table at the Keysborough Res School Community Swap. “Basically, anything you’d think would be useful for the garden or kitchen,” organiser Fran Penna said. Items ideal for swapping include fruit and vegetables, potted plants, seedlings and cuttings, eggs, home-made preserves, honey, bottles and jars, baked goods, and garden and cooking magazines and books. “People have brought along home-made soaps, crocheted scarves, plunger coffee to share ... ” Ms Penna said. “If you have bought healthy, organic products in bulk and find you have way too much, you might be able to repackage small portions, label and bring
them to the food swap table. “If you’re not sure what to bring, please ask. We’re always open to new ideas.” Ms Penna said useful items people no longer wanted or needed were welcome. Gaye Guest has participated in two swap meets. “I think it is a wonderful idea,” she said. “They have about 46 members, but only about a quarter of them go regularly, and they are hoping to attract more members to participate monthly.” The Keysborough Res School Community Swap takes place from 10am to 11am on the fourth Saturday of each month, with the next event scheduled for 30 April. It’s held at the Resurrection School Keysborough productive gardens, next to Keysborough Freedom Club.

Left let down By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A CAR theft victim foiled the thief by chasing and letting down air from a tyre of his stolen vehicle. Jesse Van Eijk, 22, had stolen the Corolla from a home in Dandenong about 10.30pm on 6 November, a court heard on 4 April. The male victim was awoken by his girlfriend who heard the car engine revving. He ran out to the front lawn and saw his car being driven away. Later that night the victim sighted the vehicle being driven twice and in Dalgety Street he was able to catch up with it and let down one of the tyres. The next morning, police received reports of suspicious behaviour involving a man changing a car tyre in Chestnut
Grove, Doveton. Van Eijk was attending to the Corolla, which had a damaged front right wheel. He told police he’d already used the spare to replace a flat rear tyre. In the car police found a cap gun. The gun’s caps and the Corolla’s keys were in the accused’s pocket. An unlicensed Van Eijk told police that he’d bought the car from an unknown male in Narre Warren for $250 but was unable to produce any paperwork. The accused claimed the gun was in the car when he ‘bought’ it. Van Eijk had been arrested on an outstanding warrant after being found drunk at Dandenong railway station on 2 April. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard that Van Eijk was living on the street at the time because his family refused to let
him live at their home. He had failed to complete most of the required hours of a current community work order. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen told Van Eijk that “you’re on a cusp and could wobble either way”, noting the accused’s youthfulness, drug-and-alcohol issues and lack of prior convictions. Mr Vandersteen said that Van Eijk’s life could turn around if he found stable accommodation and a job. On the other hand, Van Eijk wouldn’t want to continue to have stints in custody into his 30s, the judge said. Van Eijk was convicted and put on a supervised community corrections order with drug, alcohol and mental health treatment. He was disqualified from driving for six months.
Trench would split ‘village’ GREATER Dandenong Council officers have argued that a Springvale-style railway trench would destroy Noble Park’s village feel in a report on the state’s government sky rail project. The report, to be tabled at a council meeting on 11 April, states the village feel could not be achieved with a ‘rail under road’ removal of Heatherton Road level crossing - which is the alternative to elevated rail. The trench would impede the desired connection of Ian and Douglas streets, which are currently divided by rail tracks, the report stated. An undecked
trench would be a “very poor urban design and public amenity outcome” along Ross Reserve and Noble Park Aquatic Centre, it said. The recent Springvale level crossing removal project had created a trench that “undeniably created a significant and probably permanent obstacle” to integrating the north and south sides of the activity centre. The report noted the project had improved traffic and transport management and public transport connectivity. However the report’s authors had several concerns about the sky rail which was planned to
eliminate Noble Park’s three level crossings. The council was concerned about the “significant burden” of maintaining the open spaces under the rail line and the impact of freight train noise. It also questioned the impact of a possible fourth track on nearby retail centres, Noble Park Aquatic Centre, skate park and Ross Reserve. The report noted the shifting of tracks southwards near Chandler Road created more open space at the shopping strip but threatened the amenity of nearby homes.

Awards to help turn green TWO new awards are highlighting sustainable business initiatives in Greater Dandenong. The council will present awards to a business and a development at an SEBN breakfast event on 3 May. The finalists for the Sustainable Business Award are Wallara Australia, International Chemicals Engineering, Hilton Manufacturing and Lexington Gardens Retirement Village. The Sustainable Development Award finalists are the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) for Springvale Botanical Cemetery’s Clarence Reardon Centre; EPC Pacific for the Australia Tax Office building in Central Dandenong; and two Frasers Property developments - the Tyres 4U Warehouse and the Astral Pool Distribution Centre. The business nods follow awards presented at the Family Sustainability Festival at Dandenong Market on 21 February. The awards recognised and rewarded the community’s efforts towards a more sustainable environment. Eddie Botha won the Sustainable Home and Garden award for changes he and his wife have made to their property. They’re committed to leaving the world in a liveable and healthy state for their children and believe sustainability has a place in every home. They have installed 17 planter boxes to grow vegetables, herbs and native plants; planted fruit trees including lemons, apricots and plums; installed a solar panel system and water tanks; and diverted washing machine water to their lawn and trees. Mr Botha is also committed to reducing his impact on a daily basis and uses an electric scooter to travel around. “It gives me great joy knowing we
are using less yet saving more, which benefits both us and the environment,” he said. Gaye Guest and Kath O’Brien were finalists in the category. Wooranna Park Primary was the Sustainable School Award winner. The Noble Park school has installed 30 solar panels that display real-time energy data for students to see, resulting in a 15 per cent drop in energy consumption. Through signing up to the School’s Water Efficiency program, the school identified a leak it then repaired. It has installed a rainwater tank; incorporated recycling and organic waste bins in each classroom; repaired discarded bikes that now help students learn to ride; and planted more than 1000 plants on the school grounds. “The students are taking what they learn in the class and on the school grounds back home where they are leading by example to their family and contributing to a lower environmental footprint,” school environmental educator Anthony Lyon said. Noble Park Primary School and Emerson School were finalists for the Sustainable School category. There were four winners in the Sustainable Students category. Sa Up and Yuhao Chen are chicken monitors at Noble Park Primary School, feeding the chooks and collecting eggs. Emily Stephens from Wooranna Park is a leader on the school’s environment committee, a chicken carer and a sustainability advocate, and she headed the zoology program. Her classmate Sonja Iovan showed great enthusiasm as a leader and participant in the school’s environment programs. She was a chicken monitor and a leader in the school’s Friday Produce Market.
Noble Park Primary School chicken monitors Sa Up and Yuhao Chen accept their certificates from Councillor Peter Brown and Mayor Heang Tak.

COVER STORY
A PLACE OF SPACE IMAGINE a place with plenty of green spaces and country charm which is still close to all the important amenities, a place for a family to grow which is close to everything but a world away from care. Savannah - Officer aims to be that location. Officer’s newest estate on the cusp of Beaconsfield offers a rare combination of country charm, generous green spaces and city luxuries. Rich in local history, this once quiet country town is now Melbourne’s newest place to be. A dream home could be within walking distance to the new town centre which will be the “go to” place for shopping, socialising, entertainment and services. With cafes and restaurants, a town square, a community hub, new cinema, retail strip, library, performing arts space and an aquatic centre so close to hand it almost doesn’t matter how close residents are to train stations, the M1 and the rest of Melbourne. Savannah is centrally located to everything a growing family needs. BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
New link into China trade By CASEY NEILL A NEW partnership will help Greater Dandenong businesses tap into China’s eCommerce market. The State Government announced a deal with Australia Post and Chinese online marketplace Tmall at an eCommerce in China seminar on Wednesday 9 March. Small Business, Innovation and Trade Minister Philip Dalidakis said it would allow businesses to sell direct to
consumers in the world’s largest economy without leaving their homes. Last financial year Tmall sales were up 68 per cent on the previous year, exceeding $170 billion dollars. The Chinese eCommerce market is the world’s largest, with an estimated 649 million internet users spending more than $250 billion dollars each year. Greater Dandenong Council’s business group manager Paul Kearsley was at the seminar.
“Through the systems that the Victorian Government has just set up, with a partnership approach, that allows businesses in our region to access that market without having to go through all the hurdles of registering their business in China, setting up an office in China,” he said. “They can literally, as far as I understand it, just put it on Tmall Global. “There’s a massive opportunity here for small and medium enterprises to offer their services and their prod-
ucts directly to China. “We’ve just got to be part of it.” Mr Kearsley visited Nanjing twice last year. “We were taken to a couple of other companies that were specialising in eCommerce,” he said. “It was very evident to me, and also to the businesses that I took, that eCommerce was a huge opportunity to businesses in the Greater Dandenong area.”
He will ask the State Government to provide information and, potentially, workshops to help Greater Dandenong businesses to understand their opportunities. “They also might be interested in listening to speakers with examples and case studies of how they’ve gone about it,” he said. “Business to business is always the best way that we can get the information out.”
Jobs under threat with wrong crossing choice By CASEY NEILL THE wrong choice for the Abbotts Road level crossing’s future could jeopardise manufacturing in the region, a Dandenong South businessman says. David Knowles from accounting firm Pitcher Partners also slammed the Level Crossing Removal Authority’s (LCRA) admission at an industry forum on 17 March that it “had not considered economic aspects in their assessment whatsoever”. He said the area was nationally significant for manufacturing and employment and contributed significantly to economic growth. “For an area of stated national economic significance, that seems like a critical oversight,” he said. “Pitcher Partners believes the area is so significant that we opened our second Victorian office in Dandenong South just off Abbotts Road in 2014.” The LCRA revealed late last month that it planned to close Abbotts Road and build an overpass connecting Remington Drive to Pound Road West. Mr Knowles said that at the meeting, the LCRA accepted responsibility for “their poor consultation process so far” and unveiled four new options. “This is better than the fait accompli Abbotts Road closure we were initially presented with,” he said. He said that the Pound Road WestRemington Drive overpass 1.5 kilometres north of the current crossing was not a bad idea. “Connecting those roads would undoubtedly relieve some of the strain on other local arterials, but all of that benefit would be lost by closing Abbotts Road permanently,” he said. “You don’t have to be an expert town planner to work out that closing
a key arterial road carrying 23,000 vehicles per day in a key industrial area, that is already choked with traffic, will simply push that traffic onto other already-congested local roads.” Mr Knowles called for a more holistic and integrated approach from “an authority whose only mandate it would seem is to remove level crossings”. “Realistically, prioritising an overpass at Abbotts Road is the most sensible solution and that’s the feedback our clients in the region are giving us,” he said. “Ultimately, failing to invest in more infrastructure in Melbourne’s south-east will have a series of knockon negative economic effects. “The State Government has a real opportunity to invest in future capacity and make Dandenong an even more attractive investment destination, but it’s in danger of producing the opposite effect.” LCRA CEO Kevin Devlin said he was really pleased with the turnout at the forum and “appreciated the opportunity to hear from the local industry on what was important to them and their businesses”. “With all five possible options now on the table it was a great first step to gather feedback on important considerations we need to develop our options and then select a solution,” he said. Mr Devlin said the LCRA was now undertaking an extensive consultation program over the next eight months to determine the best way to remove the Abbotts Road level crossing. “The industry forum will be followed up by further interactive community sessions in April,“ he said.

Switch pays off By JARROD POTTER BELTING out the club song with his team-mates - that’s what Mitch McCarthy missed most during his football hiatus. Screaming the song in celebration after Dandenong’s round one TAC Cup victory over Gippsland meant the world to McCarthy, 18, last week as he vindicated the difficult decision to switch back to football from basketball. “I’ve had good relationships over the last couple of years with sport, but the feeling of winning a game in footy has a much stronger, more powerful meaning,” McCarthy said. “As much as I love my basketball, there’s more of a family bond in a football team and singing that song at the end of it, I don’t think I’ve ever sung a song with that much passion before.” He got to ring out the tune again on Saturday after Dandenong’s 30-point win over North Ballarat and throughout it all McCarthy is getting the hang of things after making the biggest decision of his sporting journey. McCarthy had gone to America to find his place in the basketball world, searching for a college team and preparing for life on the court, but there was the niggling feeling he couldn’t shake. It wasn’t just a desire, but an actual ingrained need to get back on the oval and give footy his full attention. “Over there (America) you’re starved of AFL - there’s none there it was like I was on a fast of footy,” McCarthy said. “I couldn’t hold a footy, couldn’t kick a footy so being starved of that gave me a bigger love of the game and hungrier to come back and do it. “Coming back and joining the Stingrays program is that next level professionalism - the way everyone presents themselves and the way everyone is one big family, it feels special, and that’s the part I love about it the most, the brotherhood of it.” The nerves settled after the first clash and while he’s a little rusty, McCarthy felt like he belonged in the TAC Cup and was able to bring

The high-flying Mitch McCarthy is loving his place at the Stingrays after returning to the football oval Picture: JARROD POTTER this season. 152161 his best for the Stingrays. “It was good - obviously nerveracking as my first official, proper game in what would’ve been 18 months,” McCarthy said. “I’ve played the couple of practice matches beforehand, but getting out there in the Stingrays jumper I was pretty nervous - but I pushed through the nerves and did what my role was. “I think I’m doing alright, it’s just positioning around the ground and getting a feel for the game back.” That basketball background has only honed McCarthy’s greatest strengths - his leaping and athleticism. Expect high-flying grabs, big tap-outs and a workhorse-output
from the former Mt Eliza Redlegs junior - all while he’s learning on the job as the prime Stingrays ruckman this season. It’s a tough ask to get your game sense back under the TAC Cup spotlight, but McCarthy has been assured by Dandenong that he’s got their backing and just needs to keep at it. Once he discovers those missing pieces in his game - the ‘intangibles’ of life on field as he puts it - the 196cm ruck prospect believes he can make a great impact in the competition. “The feel is still there, but I’m only tapping into it a little bit at the moment -for the lack of footy I’ve played in the last couple of years,” McCarthy said.
“But what Mark Wheeler said to me on the weekend ‘all this stuff, don’t worry about it as it’s what you’ll pick up from playing the game - that’s the stuff you’re lacking at the moment’. “Those intangibles are what I’m trying to work on at the moment I think physically I’m on par with where I should be - but the intangibles are and trying to execute them well. “But it gives me a bit of confidence playing that first game and knowing where I should be - playing against Gippy Power and knowing I can play to that level.” McCarthy and the Stingrays continue their TAC Cup campaign on 16 April against Bendigo in his maiden home game at Shepley Oval.
Kennedy set to show his magic By JARROD POTTER BRINGING his mercurial soccer magic to Dandenong, former Socceroos striker Josh Kennedy will play a key part in the city’s soccer future. Soccer5s Dandenong appointed Kennedy to run the centre’s regional development program (RDP) and also serve as Soccer5s RDP head coach within the coaching department. Kennedy’s signing is a boon for the region’s talented juniors because he will start to pass on his experience to the next generation of Socceroos. “It’s absolutely major for us, mate - really big,” Soccer5s centre manager Jack Gillibrand said. “It’s the next step for us and Josh is coming in to look after the SAP age groups from eight to 12 years old. “The program coincides with lo-

between grassroots club soccer and obviously NPL to bring on the development of the kids in there as well.” Based at Brindley Street, Dande-
nong South, just off Greens Road, the $4 million all-weather centre will also host a Neymar Junior’s Five tournament on Friday 13 May. The winners of the Victorian leg will earn a ticket to Sydney to battle it out for a chance at the world decider in Brazil and a chance to be trained by Neymar himself in Spain. “The winner of the national final will go through to Brazil and the winner of that tournament gets to go to a five-day camp with Neymar at the Camp Nou (FC Barcelona’s home ground),” Gillibrand said. For those who just like a run around, Soccer5s also has social leagues, it’s winter league and holds an after-school program in conjunction with Melbourne City. Jessica’s a rising star By JARROD POTTER ST GERARD’S Primary School has a rising star in its midst as Jessica Stefanovic threw her way into the Little Athletics record books. The 11-year-old athletics star, from Dandenong North, is making a big impact across the field events after she won two gold medals at the recently held Little Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships. While she also likes the hurdles, her specialities and greatest passions lie on the interior of the track as she’s a dominant discus and shot put force at the state level. She was unstoppable at Casey Fields last month, leading from the front all day in the shot put event, with a best throw of 11.03m - the only athlete in her category to achieve the 11 metremark. The discus was a bit tougher though, as she had to catch up from a fair way back. On her last attempt, Stefanovic made her final throw count with her 28.75m attempt more than enough to earn her a second gold. With a fourth-place finish in the javelin and a fifth in the triple jump, it capped off a stellar outing at Casey Fields for the Dandenong-based athlete. “I had great performances with what I did - I got the centre record for shot put, triple jump and javelin,” Stefanovic said. “In shot put, I think I was leading the whole time and with the discus I won on the very last throw - had to catch up about a metre.” From humble roots - only starting athletics to get better for the school days - all the way to dualstate championships, Stefanovic remained proud and pretty amazed about what she was able to achieve at the titles. For now it’s back to dancing over the winter months, but she’s still keen to get stuck into training to try and defend her titles next year. Stefanovic wanted to thank Moorabbin Little Athletics Centre, as well as her coach - who is also her father Greg - and her family for their support.

Kelly punts on new team By JARROD POTTER TAKING his college punting to the next level, former Nar Nar Goon footballer Dean Kelly has made the switch to Jacksonville State. Kelly, 26, from Endeavour Hills, has been through a lot in the last year with his former college Stillman cancelling the football program, leaving him on the hunt for another school on short notice. But there was a silver lining in Stillman’s decision - Kelly could move to any number of potential suitors on a free release. “Initially I only thought I had two years of eligibility left, but once our season started and I was on the roster as a freshman ... I had a full four years to play,” Kelly said. “So once they did drop the program it was a pretty crazy time for me I had about 10 schools that day call me and message me on social media showing their interest in me - so in a way it helped as I got a free release which normally we wouldn’t have gotten. “Seeing Stillman drop the football program is a huge and controversial decision - we found out with a week to go of the semester and it was pretty poor how they told everyone but we met as a team afterwards and after we met that was the last time I saw a majority of my team mates, a lot transferred schools straight away.” He chose to join the Gamecocks after he found himself in the midst of a recruiting frenzy from colleges eager to sign up the SIAC All Conference/4th Team AllAmerican punter. “I am stoked - they have a great program, playing in a national championship over two months ago and they play some
Dean Kelly has made the biggest punt of his collegiate career - switching to Jacksonville State for his upcoming junior season. quality teams and I can’t wait to get stuck into it in the summer,” Kelly said. “The opportunity to go to a school where I can not only earn a master’s degree in sports management and earn my teacher’s certification, but also to play at LSU (Louisiana State University) in front of 100,000 people and to go deep into championship playoffs is something that I really wanted to be part of.” Kelly finished his Stillman season with 52 punts for 2158 yards at a 41.7 average including a long of 66.
He can look back on his second - and ultimately final - season at Stillman with pride, as he gave it his all with the punting and even on the odd occasion - rushing. “As a team it was very disappointing only winning three games and having lapses in most games which hurt us badly,” Kelly said. “Personally I was pretty happy with my year. The highlight for me was senior night, our last home game of the year against Miles who is a big rival just up the road on a Thursday night and I had my best mate fly over for two weeks.
On my second punt of the night down, two touch downs it was 4th and 19 deep in our defence and I only saw one guy rush me and I decided to take him on and I ran for 29 yards which was our longest rushing yard from scrimmage of the year. “That drive resulted in a TD, the boys and crowd went nuts.” The step up isn’t just on the field at Jacksonville State, as Kelly knows every little aspect of his game will be refined and honed in the NCAA Division 1 program. “My averages are as good as anyone in the country but there are little things I need to do to improve and help better my game, so by having these coaches work one on one with me daily and playing on turf every game should help me where I didn’t have these type or resources at Stillman,” Kelly said. It’s a tough decision to stick to his great American dream - while his friends are getting married, buying houses and moving ahead with their careers - but Kelly doesn’t regret his choice for a second. “The chance to keep doing what I am doing and joining a D1 program, which has great results, and to earn another degree ... it’s a once in a life time opportunity and I would be silly to turn my back on a free education,” Kelly said. “I also get to take in the experience playing in front of 23,000 every home game - that is going to be pretty crazy. “Just learning and getting better and if something comes from it after college that would be awesome to get paid to punt but I am just loving doing what I am doing and earning my degrees which is why I am here.”
Local legends first in new cricket hall of fame By JARROD POTTER YOU would struggle to find six more deserving men to be the inaugural inductees into the Dandenong District Cricket Association’s Hall of Fame. The league asked clubs this season to submit nominations for those they believe were Hall of Fame worthy and the inaugural six certainly stand up to that status. The first choice was no great surprise. Alan Wookey - the legendary DDCUA figure who umpired 400 first grade games and more than 25 first grade turf grand finals - was an obvious choice, especially since the league’s medal is named in his honour. DDCA president Michael Hawking was another to earn his place in the Hall of Fame, with his on-field achievements with Hallam Kalora Park too hard to go past. Another Wookey Medallist, Hawking’s efforts as an administrator are just as impressive as his work as a player with his 401 Turf 1 wickets making him a nightmare to face in the 1980s/1990s. “It’s indeed a very high honour and I was very pleased to accept it - I suppose it’s something you’ve got to earn over a long period of time and got to satisfy the criteria and I was able to do that,” Hawking said. “I’m very humble in accepting it - it’s a great thing that we’ve started.” St Mary’s duo Stephen Meyer - revered local bowler and dual Wookey Medallist - and Troy Cashman - exceptional batsman with 7500 runs in 250 matches including a whopping 14 centuries - made the grade on opposite sides of the ball and it was no surprise their time at St Mary’s co-incided with the club’s great successes of the 1990s/2000s. Dual Wookey Medallist and now Victorian Premier Cricket premiership winning coach Steven Chapman was another to get inducted on the first ballot as Chapman excelled for years with Hallam Kalora Park after he moved to Australia. “All those guys have incredible achievements over the period in the DDCA,” Hawking said. “Meyer with Rob
DDCUA mainstay Alan Wookey, pictured with 2016 Wookey Medalist Matt Chasemore, was one of the first six men Picture: JARROD POTTER inducted into the DDCA's Hall of Fame. 151397 Walton probably the best fast bowler I’ve ever seen, Cashman definitely with John Hammond the best bat I’ve seen. “Chapman for his all-round ability and Chapman was more than a batsman and a bowler as he revolutionised our cricket, because getting him out here sounded warning bells for all the association. “They had to improve and perhaps go outside the normal recruiting structure to get an overseas player.” The final member, and inaugural Administrator inductee, Peter Barnes has been synonymous with the DDCA for the last three decades - 10 of which he served as league president.
Hawking encouraged the clubs to look beyond the recent history and find out the champions of the league’s early days to make sure the Hall of Fame isn’t just for recent contributors. “You have life-memberships for years of service and some of these cricketers don’t necessarily get life-membership but their performances deserve recognition and I would expect clubs will delve deeper into their history and get a handle on the great names of the past that would qualify,” Hawking said. “That’s obviously the highest honour you can achieve - in any sport - to be in a Hall of Fame and it’s very important to recognise these people.
“Guys like Harry Shepley and Bill Storan - who had an amazing influence in the Dandenong community in particular in sport; they’re the sort of considerations worth thinking about. “There’s more than just the people who have performed and achieved over the last 20-30 years and those in the past who have names on pavilions and sports grounds - it would be great to see the clubs that were associated with these people to delve into the past and see their contributions and they also should be added if they satisfy.” DDCA HALL OF FAME: Alan Wookey, Michael Hawking, Steven Chapman, Troy Cashman, Stephen Meyer, Peter Barnes.
Fire feels the heat By JARROD POTTER CAN the magic FFA Cup qualifying run continue for Endeavour Hills Fire SC? The club is the low-man on the totem pole in the FFA Cup Victorian qualifiers’ fifth round - as the Fire remains the only side from FFV State League 4 South in the hunt for a ticket to the national phase of the competition. The Fire has lit up Sebastopol Vikings, Lyndale United, Elwood City and in the fourth round - gunned over State League 2 South East side Sandringham SC 2-1. Goals from Stefan Bontemps and Reha Ulusoy ensured the Fire would get a chance in the fifth round against NPL 2 East side Kingston City. The side - based at Power Reserve, Doveton - has been the surprise packet of this year’s competition and president Chantal Moothoo puts it down to everything aligning over the past three seasons. “We’ve always had a very good team at the club but the fact that we’re a smaller club - it’s not easy at the start of the season to play a big part of the FFA Cup,” Moothoo said. “In the last three years, since 2013, our team has been coming stronger and stronger and this year we made a move and really appreciative of the run.” The club was meant to have completed lights at Power Reserve’s soccer pitch, but City of Casey works have gone over schedule and forced the club to look for alternative venues for the clash, scheduled midweek around 20 April. The Fire continues to push through the ranks and the president believes that whatever happens next week, there’s plenty on the horizon for the up-and-coming side. “All I say to the boys is to hang on for a draw - Kingston City is a good team - but we’ll let the penalty kicks do the job for us,” Moothoo said. “We’ll see what happens, but the boys are very excited to be at this level and playing. “The boys deserve to be there - they’ve put in a lot of hard work and, hopefully, we can go a little bit further and go into the 16. “As much as we do want to go further up, I just wish the guys good luck for the next round.” Also gunning for their spots in the sixth round are State League sides Doveton SC and former FFA Cup Round of 32 entrants South Springvale, alongside NPL 2 Victoria East tandem Dandenong Thunder and Dandenong City.

Keysy and Hallam soar By JARROD POTTER GREATER DANDENONG FOOTBALL - ROUND 1 REVIEW THE Burra continued their rampage throughout Southern Football League’s Division 2 competition, flying high in Saturday’s season opener against the Bombers. Heading into round 1 without three of its alltime champions - Corey Wilkinson, Tyson King and suspended playing-coach Ryan Goodes Keysborough found new avenues to goal to eke out the 8.13 (61) to 7.9 (51) triumph over Skye. Goodes - who is serving a 14-week suspension for an incident in the finals last year - had to stand behind the boundary fence to see his lads put a determined effort into the books. The scoreboard didn’t see much action through the first half, but despite the closely contested battle, Keysborough kicked away to a handy 23-point lead at the main break. Forwards Cory Hargreaves (three goals) and Jake Dunn (two) provided plenty up forward for the likes of Danny Morland, Will Gayfer and Michael Downie to hit up, while ruckman Bryce Sutton strung together a big collection of hit-outs on Saturday afternoon. They were troubled late in the clash - as the Bombers booted six of the last nine goals - but in the end the Burra got to belt out the song in front of the club faithful to start its second season in the Southern league in style. Springvale Districts is the low-man on the Division 2 totem pole after round one, downed by Heatherton 4.8 (32) to 9.17 (71). Under new coach Danny Rout, the Demons struggled to hit the scoreboard through the first half - spraying its way to 1.5 (11) by the main break. But the District lads surged in the third, bringing the margin back to 12 by the final change. In the end though, the Tonners had far too much in the final term, booting five-goals-five to finish Springvale Districts’ hopes of a round 1 victory.
Jake Dunn presented well up forward for Keysborough in its 2016 SFL Division 2 season Picture: JARROD POTTER opener against Skye. 152662 In Division 3, debutants Lyndhurst put Hallam under early pressure but in the end the cooler heads prevailed as Hallam took a 15.10 (100) to 7.5 (47) win. Sharing the scoring burden, Shane Thomas and Andrew Daly (five goals each) had it on a string up forward while midfielder Rory McIvor and captain Manny Peresso were too strong in the centre. The only downside from the loss was a severe ankle injury for Chris Molnar. Lyndale had to work hard to give debut coach Brad Bruni his first taste of the Pumas’ refrain in a 12.9 (81) to 9.6 (60) triumph over South Yarra. Running out onto Barry Powell Reserve from the scoreboard side - in honour of recently depart-
ed long-serving clubman Kevin “KT“ Thomas the Pumas worked their way into the clash with some hard work off the back of Daniel Wilson, Taylor Rainey and Matthew Stuart. The tide shifted Lyndale’s way in the second term as Brad Carroll (four goals), Stuart (two) and Bertrand Mcgaw (two) booted the side ahead and that’s where the Pumas stayed throughout the first afternoon of the season. Endeavour Hills joined the winners list with a 11-point shootout victory over Ashwood. It boiled down to the final term, with the sides separated by three at the last change, but in the end the Falcons soared on the back of Mitch Whatman (four goals), Cedric Legrand (three)
Thunder rises over Goulburn Valley Suns By JARROD POTTER NPL 2 EAST AND STATE LEAGUES DANDENONG Thunder continued its merry march towards the top flight with a 3-2 win on the road against Goulburn Valley Suns. The road-trip to Shepparton didn’t halt the Thunder’s 2016 goal-spree, especially after import striker Brandon Barnes (44’ and 70’) opened the accounts just before the half. The Thunder let Hakeem Alaraibi get loose at the back though - as the former Bahraini junior shone for Goulburn Valley. At every turn Alaraibi dogged the Dandenong defence as he kept the margin from getting out of hand. But Dandenong had too much firepower at the front as Amir Osmancevic (56’) doubled the margin early in the second half. That was before Barnes added a second to cap off another strong showing for the Englishman at his new club. It was left to Alaraibi again to bring the gap back, which he did as he slotted one past Fraser Maclaren with a few minutes left, but the Thunder doused the Suns’ last-ditch efforts to bring the victory back to Dandenong. A plus-17 goal difference leaves Thunder well and truly on top with an unbeaten seven-game winning streak. Sitting five points clear of Kingston City, Thunder heads into the first-versus-third superclash against Brunswick City on Saturday night aiming for eight on the trot. Springvale White Eagles failed to flourish against Box Hill United, but did enough to take a point in a 1-1 draw after Damir Stoilovic (91’) came off the bench to make the last-ditch goal and salvage the tie. WNPL side Southern United faced Heidelberg United on Sunday after the Journal went to print while Dandenong City travels to Kingston City on Monday night in its round 7 clash. In Round 8, Dandenong City hosts Eastern Lions while Springvale White Eagles battles Nunawading City away on Sunday afternoon. In FFV State League results, South Springvale was thumped 1-5 by FC Clifton Hill and Noble
and Shane Peake (three). Byron Hoe picked up where he left off last year alongside Daniel Strom and Ben Swift in the best. Doveton Eagles thrashed Sandown 22.7 (139) to 5.7 (37). Peter Dye (seven goals) was unstoppable up forward alongside Darren Ramsdale (four). Big number 66 Jarrod O’Neill was best afield for the Eagles while Jake D’Atri, Scott Jackman and Michael Edwards were the best of the Cobras’ attack. Dandenong bucked the winning trend though; downed by 72 points as Moorabbin proved far too mighty. Luke Harvey, David Barrie and Dale Jose were best afield for the Redlegs. Eastern Football League kicked off emphatically as Noble Park defeated South Croydon 16.9 (105) to 11.8 (74) on the back of a huge bag from forward Shayne Allan. The Bulls’ forward maestro booted seven for the afternoon, with lace out delivery coming from the likes of Kyle Martin and new recruits Ben Giobbi and Mitch Gent. The Bulls stormed ahead with a seven-goal opening term, but the Dogs never died down and kept the match interesting throughout the day. The win puts Noble Park into third after the opening round before its first 2016 clash at the Bullring, taking on Knox from 2.10pm Saturday. In VAFA results, Masala struggled to match pace with North Brunswick in the Division 4 season opener. The Tigers could only muster 8.12 (60) to the Bulls’ 19.12 (126). There are promising signs for the boys from Turner Reserve though, as they outscored the visitors in the final term with a sixgoal-four term. James Logan booted two while Matthew Decarne, Furkan Erkal and Alex Adamopoulos were best afield. St John’s had a bye in Division 2 and will face Yarra Valley Old Boys in its season opener.

White Star Dandenong’s Conor Haher slides in against Pakenham United’s Liam Picture: JARROD POTTER McCafferty. 152666 Park United fell 0-2 to Old Scotch, but the lower grade sides shone. In an all-Dandy derby, Dandenong South was way too powerful for Lyndale United winning 5-0. The Thunder’s community affiliate was beyond unstoppable at it smashed its way to victory on the back of goals to Malik Sulemani (two), Billal Sulemani, Vendurim Mustafai and Ricardo Castro. Springvale City was too good for Keysborough SC, defeating the hosts 2-1. Arnel Zahirovic and Armin Kerla booted Springvale City clear, despite the best efforts of Keysborough’s Alexander Tang to keep the scores level. Rounding out State League 4 South, Endeav-
our Hills Fire continued its extrodinary time on pitch in 2016 after defeating Bayside Argonauts 4-0. The FFA Cup qualifiers have been kind to the Fire and so has the regular league as the Power Reserve lads smashed in goals via a brace from the captain David Schulberg and singles to Bujar Thaqi and Mathew Durand. Harrisfield fell to East Brighton in a 3-4 shootout while Noble Park SC and Hampton Park rounded out the victors in State 4 with wins over Endeavour United, and Skye United respectively. Pakenham United and White Star Dandenong split the points 3-3 - with Gyzegorz Niemczyk, Abu Seidu and James Rasool scoring for the visitors against the State League 5 South debutants.
SEABL - ROUND 2 IT’S tough to lose on home-court; it’s agony to lose there by just one point. The Dandenong men’s team was left to lick its wounds after a nail-biting 76-77 SEABL loss to Brisbane on Saturday night. Spartans duo Isaih Tueta (25 points) and CJ Bruton (19 points) created nothing but headaches for the Rangers, but the hosts stayed strong despite Brisbane rushing to the front by the final change. With eight seconds left, the Rangers had squeezed the margin back to one but Darren Perry’s charges couldn’t rouse the victory as Brisbane’s defence held strong in the dying moments. Lucas Walker (29 points) was exceptional in his return to the roster while Andrew Harms (10 points) and Chuck Long (nine points) were serviceable for the Rangers. The Rangers’ women on the other hand had no troubles dispatching the Spartans 85-77 in the first match of the double-header. Dandenong’s powerhouse talls Chloe Bibby (27 points, eight rebounds) and a monster double-double from Lauren Scherf (24 points, 19 rebounds) dominated both ends of the floor to combine for 51 points. Clare Papavs (15 points, seven rebounds, six assists) got it done at both ends of the court as well to send signals through the league that the Rangers are still solid even with their big list of off-season departures. There was plenty more to celebrate as Aimie Clydesdale (four points, six assists) notched her 100th SEABL game. Dandenong hosts Kilsyth on Saturday night at Dandenong Basketball Stadium. Keysborough’s senior men and women faced Geelong Supercats and Altona respectively on Sunday afternoon after the Journal went to print. The Cougars’ ladies battle Mornington on Sunday afternoon next week while the Men travel to Melton on Sunday as well.

Earning his inaugural Diamondblacks jersey, Kahui, 14, from Noble Park was one of 20 players selected in the final under-15 side for the championships, held in Japan this August. Kahui admitted it was pretty exciting to get his chance to play for his homeland and show what he’s capable of in the black and silver strip. “Going to be playing for New Zealand and we’re going to Fukushima,” Kahui said. “Had to go to New Zealand and try out for the team - it wasn’t too bad. “It was a bit different - most of the boys that were at the trials had played softball instead of baseball and didn’t know how to play properly, so I tried to help them out as well.” As a bit of a baseball all-rounder, Kahui loves to rattle off the fast balls but is just as happy fielding at second base or short-stop. To improve his batting Kahui has undertaken a rigorous practice schedule - striking 200 pitches a day to ensure he would be up to standard at the championships.
His Diamondblacks will take on the likes of Australia, America, Mexico and Japan among others at the championships and, regardless of the result, Kahui is just out to have fun. “It’s pretty cool as I’m the first Kahui to make it into a New Zealand team,” Kahui said. “I want to have a great time - doesn’t matter if we lose because it’s still good that we got to go up there and tried our best.” It caps off a strong summer on the diamond for Kahui after he made the Victorian under-16 White team for the Baseball Australia National Youth Championships in January and was impressed with his side’s performance to surprise many other teams. “The white team is the development team and we went up there and came fourth,” Kahui said. “No one expected us to come fourth, I think they expected us to come last. “My pitching and outfield was good great plays in the outfield ... and I took six catches in one game.” He’s on the hunt for sponsorship to help him get across to the championships, so if anyone is interested in getting behind Kahui, he can be contacted by email at AusNZBaseballU15@hotmail.com.

LEADING the Dolphins into the 2016 VFL season isn’t something newly announced captain Jason Pongracic will take lightly. Pongracic, 21, from Cranbourne, has been a mainstay at the Dolphins for the last three seasons and has been thrust into the top echelon of the club’s 2016 leadership group. The club’s internal ballot revealed a lot about what his team mates think of the former Dandenong Stingrays captain and their belief in his leadership capabilities. “Pretty stoked, obviously a massive honour to be given the captaincy,” Pongracic said. “The most important thing is what the team mates think and getting voted in and given the role by them is pretty special.” Taking the captaincy won’t change Pongracic’s actions though he wants to lead by example as usual and not let it get in the way of his on-field responsibilities. “I don’t think much will change - I won’t change because of being given the title,” Pongracic said. “Go about things the same way I have before - lead the way in how I act. “I don’t expect anyone to do what I wouldn’t do.”
Newly announced Frankston skipper Jason Pongracic is ready to Picture: JARROD POTTER lead this VFL season. 141966 What he does best - the inside roving work - hasn’t been easy at Frankston Park during Pongracic’s VFL time, but he believes the side is trending upwards this time around especially with a list of high-calibre inclusions. “I’m not too sure how we’ll go, but I’m pretty excited about what we can do this year,” Pongracic said. “We’re coming from a fair way back last year, after not winning a game, but I think we’ll be more competi-
tive and pinch a few games along the way. “We’ve got a good mix of young guys who have a bit of experience and we’ve added in a couple of important players into the side. “Really excited about what we can achieve and keen to get the season underway and change the perception of Frankston.” The Dolphins inclusions for season 2016 are led by Andrew Mc-
Innes, from Devon Meadows by ways of Carlton and Norwood in the SANFL, as well as Josh Bennett and ruckman Michael Sikora. Add to that debuting VFL prospects from the Stingrays - Pearcedale’s Harry Prior and Daniel Capiron - and Pongracic thinks the side is on the right path for 2016 and beyond. Just as important as the ins are usually the outs at Frankston ... but this time around there hasn’t been an exodus. The Dolphins list from 2015 is full of inclusions and lacks the usual loss of players that has dogged the side in recent campaigns. “We had a massive turnover at the start of last season when Goose (Simon Goosey) left and Patty Hill came in - but last year to this year we’ve only lost two or three,” Pongracic said. “We lost our captain Shane Hockey to the WAFL and Josh Tynan off to Port and apart from that we’ve kept the top 30-40 together and kept the senior group together.” Frankston’s season begins on Saturday night at Casey Fields when they battle local rivals Casey Scorpions from 7pm.
