well under qualifying time as he saved his best for last. Chasing down Larkin on his left shoulder for the fourth and final lap, Beaver brought it home in 30.16 - charging through the final 50 metres - to finish in a personal best time and earn his first trip to the Olympic Games. “I knew what I did in the semi-final was good and had a few more gears to go - and saved them for the final, essentially saved the fireworks for the final,” Beaver said. “It just came down to putting everything I knew and everything I’ve worked on for the last four years and basically my entire swimming career into that one moment.” It wasn’t just his fans back in Tooradin, the Casey TigerSharks, Nunawading Swimming Club, and at CASEY Race that cheered him home, but even the national champion Larkin was just as proud to see Beaver make the team as everyone around the Dolphins camp was barracking for him.

Josh Beaver has earned his ticket to Rio after a flying time in the 200m backstroke final of the Olympic Picture: JARROD POTTER Games trials on Tuesday night. 152454 “I’m really stoked Beav made the team,” Larkin said. “He’s one of the nicest guys around the pool-deck.” Lawson finished third in the 200m backstroke final - unable to repeat the magic of his 2012 swim to earn him a trip to London - as he touched in at 1.59.37.

Larkin continued his domination of the 100m/200m backstroke double with a 1.53.9 to book his second spot in the Rio team from as many races. Beaver and Lawson had one more chance to qualify for Rio - with the 50m backstroke preliminaries and finals on Wednesday night after the

FROM Tooradin all the way to Rio de Janeiro, swimmer Josh Beaver just earned the right to call himself an Olympian. Beaver, 23, from Tooradin took to the water on Tuesday night for his best chance at the 2016 Hancock Prospecting Australian Championships - the 200m backstroke. Over 10 years of hard work in the pool boiled down to one race at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre, as Beaver rested his hopes of qualifying for the Rio Olympic Games on his pet event. Needing a first or second place finish and to beat the Olympic Games A qualifying time of 1.57.12 to re-join the Australian team for another international campaign, Beaver did more than enough to qualify. He touched in at 1.56.17 to clinch his spot on the Australian Dolphins Swimming Team and add an Olympic Games campaign to his swimming resume. After just missing out on a spot at the 2012 London Olympic Games team, Beaver couldn’t believe just how quickly it all happened as he became an Olympian in the blink of an eye. “To be honest with you, I don’t even know what was going on,” Beaver said. “I finished and looked up at the times - was 1.56.1 and it was my best and I knew it was enough and it all just sort of clicked. “It all clicked in a moment of a second - that wow ... I’m going to the Olympics.” Tooradin’s newest Olympian stopped the clock at 1.57.42 in the semi-final to earn him lane five for the biggest race of his life, next to Australian champion Mitch Larkin and two lanes over from long-time team-mate Casey TigerShark Matson Lawson. Beaver glued himself to Larkin throughout the race, keeping his splits

Tomahawk attack By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A 47-YEAR-OLD Cranbourne man defied bail conditions and an intervention order by hacking down a bedroom door with a tomahawk axe during a frightening attack on his separated wife, a court has heard. In a victim impact statement read to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday 11 April, the man’s wife of 29 years stated he seemed to “lose all control” at the home on 7 April. “It doesn’t give him the right to terrify me physically and mentally.” During his rage, the man started yelling and striking a computer screen with a sharpening stone.

His wife then barricaded herself in the bedroom. The man bashed the door off its hinges using a tomahawk, pushed his wife on the bed and dragged her to the ground by her hair. The victim stated she was scared the man would harm her with the tomahawk and begged for him to stop. After grabbing a phone from his wife’s bag, the husband implored her to “get off the ground you stupid fat c***”. She stated that her husband had “never been this person” until a chronically painful back injury sustained at work in 2012.

This once generous and loving man had descended into depression due to the stress, she wrote. Magistrate Julie O’Donnell was concerned that the man had gone “straight back” to the house despite being released on bail - on condition of not going to the home - by a court on 31 March. He had been bailed at the time over charges of assaulting his wife and breaching an intervention order. Last year, the man was put on a good behaviour bond without conviction over a family violence incident. At Monday's hearing, Ms O’Donnell took into account the man’s lack of convictions as well as

noting the two recent “significant” family violence incidents. She sentenced the man to a 12-month community corrections order, including treatment for his cannabis and ice use, mental health issues and attending offender-behaviour programs. The order would not include community work due to “possible complications” with the man’s WorkCover claim. He was also jailed for five days - which had already been served in custody since the tomahawk attack. The court was told the man would immediately move address to Jamieson in northern Victoria.

Hunt for purse bandit POLICE are searching for a man who demanded a women’s purse before jumping a fence with the cash and throwing the purse back at the victim in a Cranbourne car park. Investigators have been told a woman was standing next to her car in a hotel car park on High Street about 4.40pm on Thursday 17 March when the incident occurred. She was approached by an unknown man who made demands for her purse, and when the woman handed over her purse the offender fled the scene. He was last seen climbing over a rear fence and removed cash from the purse before throwing the purse back towards the woman. Investigators have released images of a man that may be able to assist with their inquiries. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au Ashley Tregent is wanted on five warrants.

BRAVE neighbours saved a Hampton Park man after his home was engulfed in flames. The 60-year-old man was pulled to safety through a front window as professional and volunteer firefighters from four local stations attended the fierce blaze, on Thursday 7 April. The man was treated at the scene by firefighters and paramedics and taken to Casey Hospital suffering burns to his limbs. CFA were alerted to the house fire at an address on Michelle Drive in Hampton Park, about 1.15pm, and it took 15 firefighters more than an hour to extinguish the blaze. Leading firefighter David Black from Hallam CFA said fire crews managed to control the “intense” blaze, before it damaged neighbouring properties. “The fire is currently under police investigation and has caused extensive damage to the home, a good 30 to 40 per cent of the house,” Mr Black said.

“The fire was intense for the brigades, the flames were issuing out the front door and front windows of the home and it was a fairly high smoke level.” Sergeant Kim Staples from the Cranbourne Police Station, who was at the scene, said the fire is not deemed suspicious. “Arson chemists attended the scene and police are aware of the source of the fire,” Sgt Staples said. Mr Black said fairy lights which can be seen from the front of the home were not to blame for the fire. The home owner suffered burns to his arms and upper legs and David Black congratulated the three male neighbours on their efforts to bring him out safely. “I believe the man lives alone, the neighbours did a fantastic job, they put their lives at risk,” Mr Black said. The homeowner’s labrador was also brought to safety by firefighters. Firefighters from Hallam, Narre Warren, Cranbourne and Hampton Park attended the scene.

Visit celebrates firm friendship By LACHLAN MOORHEAD ALMOST 20 years since the 1999 East Timorese crisis, the sovereign state is still re-building. For most of that time the Friends of Ermera, through its partnership with the City of Casey, has been pivotal in contributing to that re-build. But the Friends of Ermera, whose members are based in Casey and regularly travel to the Timorese district, couldn’t do what they do without a lot of help from Timorese contributors who act as their eyes and ears on the ground. Lola Maia is one of these invaluable helpers. The Timorese-born 28-yearold is the Community Development Worker for the Friends of Ermera. Based in East Timor, Lola’s role sees her work closely with the Friends of Ermera Commission based in Timor, and visits projects and programs being undertaken as part of the initiative. Lola landed in Australia last week - her first visit to the country - and will spend the next month in discussions with representatives of the City of Casey to strengthen the partnership between Ermera and Casey Council, while also visiting various friendship schools in the municipality. “It’s really important,” Lola told Star News. “What the community in East Timor really need is to build a better life and support families and support all the youth that are studying in senior school and junior high school.

Friends of Ermera president Jan Trezise is happy to have Lola Maia visiting from East Timor this month. 152461 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS “Education is very important.” Lola knows more than a little about East Timor and education. The community worker and her husband, Andre, have two children - five-year-old daughter Stefania and two-yearold son Stefanio - and live in a small village known as Lauala, just outside the Timorese town of Gleno, in the Ermera district. Having worked in her role for the last five years, Lola has been instrumental in helping to organise Ermera’s women’s groups, scholarships for school students, kindergarten programs, and many other projects. Friends of Ermera president Jan Trezise said the role Lola played for their group couldn’t be understated. “She’s been a very effective link, she’s ensured we get proposals,” Jan said. “She works with the commission and goes out and visits

the group, then recommendations are made.” Lola previously taught English to children in Cambodia and Malaysia, an experience that Jan said put her in great stead as she taught the same lessons to kids in Ermera. “Since 1999, Timor has had to choose which language it uses, and develop its own curriculum for schools,” Jan said. “Very few people have had the opportunity to be leaders, and we’re such a close neighbour, we share lots of values, and it’s appropriate for Australia to assist in developing those skills. “While she’s here Lola will learn new things, but also there’s things that are already happening in Timor that she’s a part of that are very important.” For more information about the Friends of Ermera, visit www.casey.vic.gov.au/council/ about-casey/sistercities/ermera

Stolen car left in same street

1212998-EB03-16

POLICE have released CCTV images of at least two men who raided a Berwick house and stole a car from the property last month. It’s believed the intruders gained entry to the Abercrombie Street home sometime between 1am and 4am on Tuesday 23 February. Once inside they stole a wallet with cash and credit cards, as well as car keys which they used to steal a Toyota Camry which was driven about three houses down the road and abandoned. The raiders then attempted to use one of the victim’s credit cards at a petrol station in Berwick. Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact the Casey Crime Investigation Unit on 9705 3114 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE 04 During the last six weeks there has been an increase in tradespeople on the Bunjil Place site as construction ramps up.

An image posted to Facebook of the mess outside the Hampton Park Salvation Army.

Dumping act a ‘disgrace’ By GEORGIA WESTGARTH NEW owners of the Hampton Park Plaza have slammed the indecent dumping of hard rubbish outside the Salvation Army store, promising prosecution will soon follow offenders who are caught on video. The Ouson Group took over the shopping precinct late last year and project co-ordinator Edvina Salkanovic told Star News that CCTV footage is currently being investigated. “I have spoken with the City of Casey and we are both disgraced at what’s happening there, we are working with police and the Salvos to clean up the centre, Ms Salkanovic said. “People who dump will be prosecuted, she said. Concerned at the amount

of hard rubbish including soiled mattresses and couches sprawled outside the Salvos doors, Ms Salkanovic, a Hampton Park resident of 13 years said the problem is ongoing. “The recent Easter long weekend was the worst I’ve ever seen it, she said. Casey councillor Damien Rosario raised the matter at the council meeting on Tuesday 6 April, saying he was “embarrassed for the community. “The whole store from end to end is covered in rubbish and this is not stuff you can use - it’s not good goods and it’s costing the Salvos fund-raising money to have it removed, Cr Rosario said. Cr Rosario resolved that the Casey Council will work with police and the Ouson Group to

help stop the illegal dumping. Local resident and Hampton Park Community House manager Tania Sacco said people needed to have more pride in their suburb. “It’s disgusting and it’s definitely like that on a regular basis, but what’s more disappointing is that people rummage through it, taking stuff, Ms Sacco said. “The sad thing is it’s the volunteers left to clean it up and they are wasting their time doing that before they can even make sales for much needed funds. The Ouson Group has confirmed cameras will be up and running to catch those dumping and rummaging through the rubbish and donations left out of hours.

Taskforce to tackle population boom By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CASEY is the largest municipality in Victoria, and with population expected to balloon in the next 25 years, State Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has announced a taskforce to tackle the growing issue. Mr Guy launched the Coalition’s Victorian Population Taskforce on Monday 11 April, saying “Victoria needs a whole of government approach to regionalising our population growth. “The biggest challenge Victoria faces today is managing population growth and how that creates new jobs and protects the way we live, Mr Guy

said in a statement. “This is about jobs, infrastructure and the way we live. We cannot continue to grow the way we have the last 30 years for the next 30 years. Casey currently sits at a population of almost 300,000 residents, and by 2041 is expected to be home to 490,000 people. And recent figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show Cranbourne East is Australia’s largest growing suburbexpanding by 88 people per week last financial year. Mr Guy said greater Melbourne’s population was growing by 92 per cent each year, and that a Victorian population

policy was needed to ease the infrastructure pressure. “The Liberal Nationals Coalition sees population growth as an opportunity not a burden and our population taskforce will embrace this opportunity, Mr Guy said. “The findings of the Victorian Population Taskforce will form the basis of detailed policies that the Liberal Nationals Coalition will present before the next election. “The taskforce will look at how government plans for population growth overall, including the infrastructure we will need and how services will need to evolve.

IN RESPONSE to the Mayor, Cr Sam Aziz (Barking Up The Wrong Tree, News 7 April) to my letter (Complaint Registered, 31 March) regarding cat registration - what a load of “pollie waffle”. The Mayor has missed the point entirely 25 per cent is 25 per cent, not an average of 13 per cent. Whether it be 13 per cent or 25 per cent, it is still well above inflation of about 2.5 per cent - why? The services council provides is a load of clap trap. The fee may have been decided at an open council meeting on 15 December 2015 - that doesn’t make it fair. Sorry if you don’t like the word “stealth”. Why is the State Government getting a cut? What the council is doing is trying to get

around the 2.5 per cent cap on council rates by increasing fees not classified as council rates. It will be interesting see what the new garbage rate will be for 2016-2017. Bunjil is another example of council arrogance. Just to round off this letter, there is no mention of local councils in the Australian Constitution - therefore local councils are illegal! Arvo Talvik, Cranbourne.

Travel to transparency I RECENTLY received an invitation from my local Cranbourne MP Jude Perera to attend a community forum on public transport at the Balla Balla Community Centre.

While I know that extra bus services were certainly a pre-election promise and I am glad to see some action. Much to my surprise, this forum turned out to be organised by not by Mr Perera but by Public Transport Victoria (PTV). It was one of a number of ways they were consulting with the community about changes to the bus services in the area. Yet the invite asked for an RSVP to Mr Perera, not to the PTV. When asked who paid for the event, the centre refused to divulge the information, citing ‘privacy’ concerns. So, Mr Perera, were you being honest in claiming this as your event? I think a little transparency might go a long way. Rob Ward, Cranbourne North.

Tamara Bush, via Facebook Every government is so short-sighted when planning these major road projects that they fail to consider future growth. A GHOST car, which suddenly appears on a Cranbourne road, has gone viral. The car was caught on dash cam appearing from nowhere to suddenly collide with another vehicle. The video posted on Friday 8 April on social media by a follower called Warwick had viewers clicking the replay button to try to work out where the car came from. The dash cam reveals the silver Astra suddenly appearing after colliding with a ute which as it turns right at a junction in Cranbourne. AFTER more than three year at Star News Group, many of those as a reporter for the Berwick and Cranbourne News, journalist Lachlan Moorhead is setting out on a new adventure. He leaves his role in the very capable hands of his colleague Cam Lucadou-Wells and his news buddy, Georgia Westgarth. THE historic Doveton Heights Cottage was sold for $400,000 last week. The house was bought last Thursday before it was scheduled to go under the hammer at auction on Saturday 9 April. The cottage, which sits in Doveton Avenue in Eumemmerring, was built in 1894 by Captain John Doveton and his wife Margaret Elis-

abeth Doveton, after which the suburb was named. The sale was organised by Donaldson Real Estate, with realtor Les Donaldson saying he was delighted with the outcome. IT WAS a case of just follow the gouges in the road during a sluggish police pursuit. Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard that police spotted a stolen car, crawling with a deflated tyre and wheel rim grinding along Willow Drive, Hampton Park, shortly after midnight on 11 April. The silver Bluebird, with sparks and smoke issuing from its front wheel, travelled on despite pursuing police activating their sirens. Police followed the wheel’s gouge marks for two kilometres before catching up with the driver and his 18-year-old passenger.

Dozens charged over CBD brawl By LACHLAN MOORHEAD POLICE have charged 24 people over the wild brawl in Melbourne’s CBD last month. It’s believed members of the ‘Apex’ gang, allegedly named after Apex Street in Dandenong North, were involved in a freefor-all against rival gang Islander 21. The fight that unfolded on Melbourne’s White Night saw about 150 people converge on Federation Square and wreak havoc throughout the city. Twenty-four people have been charged with a number of offences including affray and riotous behaviour, while one of them has been charged with two counts of theft. Those charged range from 14 to 40 years of age, and more arrests are expected in the next few days. Detectives from Taskforce Ares, set up specifically to investigate the city brawl on Saturday 12 March, have so far

identified about 40 people who were involved in unlawful activity on the night. Police allege an initial fight broke out between a group of adults and a group of youths at Birrarung Marr about 7.50pm. Then two more fights allegedly took place between two groups of youths at Federation Square about 10.20pm and in the city square about 10.45pm. Police are also investigating 17 robberies and thefts in the CBD that night. Members of the Apex gang have also allegedly been involved in a spate of home invasions and car thefts across Casey in the last nine months or so. On Monday 11 April the State Opposition pledged to crackdown on the stolen car trade when elected. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said people caught buying stolen cars for scrap metal

would be hit with a fine of more than $15,000. “This won’t stop all car thefts, but it will put the handbrake on gangs who think stealing and selling cars for cash is easy money,” he said. Today’s arrests are another chapter in the ongoing investigation into Melbourne’s gangs, with Star News reporting last month that an Apex teen member allegedly threatened to shoot a Greater Dandenong detective and approached her in a cafe while she ate lunch with her partner. According to a poster at the police station, Dandenong police have warned its officers that the Apex teen in question or his partners could launch an attack on the building. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic. com.au.

all new Victorian Government schools. Principals of design include indoor learning spaces that can be adapted in design and layout to suit the social and educational needs of all students, along with outdoor sensory areas such as gardens. Some spaces will support students who want to withdraw from social circumstances if

they are feeling overwhelmed or need to focus on a specific task. These architectural and design elements will be incorporated into 15 new schools- including Casey Central East Primary School in Cranbourne North - being built under the $291 million public private partnership school building project.

JEAN Anderson has been enjoying her family for many decades. A Cranbourne resident of eight years, Jean will mark her century on Sunday 16 April at the Cranbourne RSL. Her daughter Beth Murphy said she would have her three children, nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren by her side to celebrate. “She never thought she’d make it to 100, she still jokes about it- she can’t believe it,” Beth said.

Having lived on a farm in Warracknabeal for the majority of her married life, Jean said the one thing that got her this far was family. “You just have to enjoy your family, those who have looked after you,” Jean said. After a lifetime of playing tennis and piano, sewing and calligraphy, Jean hasn’t lost her creative spark. “She’s always been artistic, I have some of her poems framed and she still does colouring in,” Beth said. After moving from their sheep and wheat farm with her

husband of 64 years, Duncan, a WWII veteran, Jean recalls one exciting day. “Going to Government House for a garden party- we were invited for a presentation of a war medal for Duncan,” she said. Jean has already received recognition from Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnball, and Beth hopes one from the Queen isn’t far away. “My mum is lovely, she’s witty and still has her dry humour and the letter will be a surprise for her on her special day,” Beth said.

Keep power with people By GEORGIA WESTGARTH CRANBOURNE support workers advocate daily on behalf of Casey families to stop disconnection of essential services, but under proposed changes energy companies may be forced to aid customers or face penalties. According to the Essential Services Commission (ESC) report, energy retailers that fail to assist customers in financial hardship could face penalties of up to $20,000. An inquiry into the hardship programs and policies of Victorian energy retailers was initiated by the State Government in February last year, following record disconnection rates. Recommendations from the ESC would require energy companies to provide assistance that matches the type of payment difficulty a customer is having. They are also expected to defer debt repayment for up to two years for customers experiencing serious payment difficulties, and allow them to stay connected to their power supply on a pay-as-you-go arrangement. The ESC also proposed that companies work with customers to help reduce their energy use and access other support. Cranbourne Information and Support Service Inc (CISS), Executive Officer, Leanne Petrides

Cranbourne CISS executive officer Leanne Petrides urges anyone in need of support services to visit her in Picture: GARY SISSONS Cranbourne. 149771 said since the deregulation of the energy market, competitive cold calling has left customers confused and facing regular disconnection. “We’ve definitely seen an increase in people getting caught up in contracts that aren’t suitable for them, and bizarrely we’ve even had to assist people who have been getting billed from two separate energy companies,” Ms Petrides said. “It can be very hard for people who have English as a second language and who have low literacy.” Member for Narre Warren South Judith Couacaud Graley said she was aware of the local families struggling to afford

utility bills. “This approach will provide them with a safety net and make it much easier for them to work with their energy retailers to stay connected,” Ms Couacaud Graley said. Ms Petrides said her team at CISS dealt more with hardship related to gas and electricity bills than water repayments. “One of the most common complaints we get is that the customer has no luck advocating for themselves,” Ms Petrides said. “They come to us stressed and aggravated, and we work very hard with the energy company’s hardship team to ensure people don’t get disconnected.”

On the level By GEORGIA WESTGARTH DUPLICATION works to remove the level crossing at Thompsons Road in Cranbourne North are set to start later this year. Stage one of the vital eastwest corridor upgrade is estimated to cost $79.4 million, with a contract to be awarded in September. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera announced the upgrade in early April, saying: “Labor started the much needed duplication of Thompsons Road Project and

Labor will finish it”. The first stage of construction will see three lanes built from Marriott Boulevard to the South Gippsland Highway in each direction and removal of the level crossing. VicRoads has called Thompsons Road an “essential freight and transport route”, which carries around 26,000 vehicles each day. The upgrade is set to significantly improve traffic flow and improve connectivity. VicRoads has conducted

traffic data collection, strategic traffic modelling, field feature surveys, site geotechnical investigations and environmental investigations. And design refinement and micro simulation traffic modelling are underway to inform the project options for the remaining sections of the upgrade. Mr Perera has advised a business case for the remaining sections has been submitted to the government, and the scope for the second stage will be announced in May 2016.

IMAGINE a place with plenty of green spaces and country charm which is still close to all the important amenities, a place for a family to grow which is close to everything but a world away from care. Savannah - Officer aims to be that location. Officer’s newest estate on the cusp of Beaconsfield offers a rare combination of country charm, generous green spaces and city luxuries. Rich in local history, this once quiet country town is now Melbourne’s newest place to be. A dream home could be within walking distance to the new town centre which will be the “go to” place for shopping, socialising, entertainment and services. With cafes and restaurants, a town square, a community hub, new cinema, retail strip, library, performing arts space and an aquatic centre so close to hand it almost doesn’t matter how close residents are to train stations, the M1 and the rest of Melbourne. Savannah is centrally located to everything a growing family needs. There are places to run, play and kick footy, childcare close to home, convenient public transport and a supportive and a close-knit community. New residents don’t need to travel far to great amenities because nearby thriving Pakenham has an enviable mix of shopping and dining as well and residents can wander the historically significant Winjeel trail around Lakeside Pakenham Estate, explore the local bush at Bunyip State Park or visit a local market for fresh produce.

A 15 minute drive will take residents to the heart of Dandenong. And with young families in mind, Savannah is a place where kids can grow and run and yet have plenty of options from

daycare through to university because, when it comes to school, the region is spoilt for choice with Officer, Berwick and Beaconsfield being home to world-class primary, secondary and tertiary options.

Discover Savannah Officer at the sales office at 432 Princes Highway, Officer. Phone 9800 0000 or contact Janine Scott-Rule on 0417 160 423. T HP

take

ten With Kay Coram, a volunteer at Balla Balla Community Centre 1. What is something people don’t know about you? I have an enormous phobia of butterflies and moths. Give me snakes and spiders anytime. 2. What was your most memorable moment? Lunch in the Grand Canyon 2012 - with champagne, not bad for someone who doesn’t drink. 3. What would your last meal be? Crumbed sausages and salad. (Yes, you can crumb ’em with great difficulty!) 4. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? The age of the dinosaurs - they absolutely fascinate me! 5. What is your favourite television show? Once Upon a Time. A wonderful series still running on digital TV. 6. What is your favourite book? The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I’m partial to 17th century kilted warriors.

8. What has been your most embarrassing moment? Falling badly and ruining my and my daughter’s New Zealand holiday - (Oh, and swearing badly on the way down). 9. What era would you like to live in? I am happy with the era that I was born into, the ’50s. We had the best music and movies and people were so nice. No drugs (well maybe Bex powders) and on the cusp of wonderful technology. 10. What was your first or best concert? I loved John Farnham in concert before his “comeback” and I absolutely adored the Edinburgh Military Tattoo showing in Melbourne recently.

Sure shot at Games By JARROD POTTER SHOOTING for Australia at her maiden Olympic Games, Laetisha Scanlan had to go through the wringer just to make the team. Scanlan, 25, from Berwick, endured a brutal end to her Olympic Games qualifying campaign but she shot through the pain to book her ticket to Rio. There were ups and downs throughout the last 12 months, but it all came to a head for the shotgun shooter in the weeks leading up to the final selection trial in Sydney. Scanlan finished the job she started three and a half years ago, brushing aside multiple injury scares that threatened her selection chances, to qualify for the Australian shooting team. “I’ve been really ramping up my fitness and from that I got a niggling back injury, then my best friend was getting married and we did a surprise hen’s party in Bali and on the way back from Bali I was in a car crash,” Scanlan said. “I got severe whiplash and I think I had nine or 10 days before my last Olympic trial - so I couldn’t train in that time because I couldn’t move my neck left or right. “But I had a good physio and team behind me that got me up and moving, so it was just really bad timing “I didn’t do as well as I hoped, but obviously it was enough to get me over the line and I think my past performances in the last 12 months did help the selection panel see who was the best medal

chance for Rio.” While she’s thrilled to make the team, Scanlan admits the announcement is only the start of the hard work and it will only get tougher from here. “I mean it’s been a pretty good week in terms of fulfilling four years of goals and plans ... but unfortunately I think the team announcement was the easiest thing that’s going to happen in the next four months,” Scanlan said. “I’ve got a lot of work and preparation ahead of me ... being my first Olympics I’m not too sure how everything is going to turn out so I’m just going to try and be as prepared as possible for all the outcomes and we’ll go from there.” For the Commonwealth Games gold medallist - earning her accolades at both Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014 - she can look back without regret about 2012. While she wasn’t ready for the London Olympic Games, Scanlan believes just missing out focused her Rio ambitions and pushed her even harder. “I look back and think about 2012 now and think I wasn’t ready,” Scanlan said. “I wouldn’t have been ready for those Games and I was a little bit inexperienced, little bit too immature and in hindsight it was probably better as it gave me a kick up the butt and I did work very hard for the next three and a bit years to get where I wanted to be. “To be competitive on the international stage, I think it’s really important to know you can make it with the world’s

best, so it gives you a little bit of a boost.” Scanlan has already departed for Rio for a test event and World Cup event this week and will have plenty on the cards before she heads off in August for the Olympics. She’s well placed heading into the Games, ranked within the top-10 in the world, but she admits it all comes down to each shot on the day. “I think I’m ranked fifth or sixth in the world, just got back from the first World Cup event after I missed out on the final by one target,” Scanlan said. “I’m in the mix - I’m still in the top 10 - but I think the most important thing about shooting is that you have a lot of ups and downs and it’s all about peaking at the right moment, and I’m trying to get that process ready for August. “At the end of the day, Rio is what really matters.” Most importantly, she’ll have her cheer-squad right behind her at the Deodoro Olympic Shooting Centre as her parents will make the trip across to South America. “I’m just really excited I’m lucky enough that my parents are going to come over and watch me which I think is very special for them,” Scanlan said. “They’re my number one fans and have seen me progress through the ranks from when I started, when I was 15, to where I am now. “So they’re probably more proud and happy than I am so it will be nice to have that kind of support over there.”

South east breeds well for Big V By JARROD POTTER THE south east has proved a happy recruiting zone for Victoria Metro Youth Girls, with a sea of South East Juniors set to don the Big V. Players from Beaconsfield, Lyndhurst, Cranbourne and Parkmore have been picked for state duties at the upcoming 2016 AFL Youth Girls National Championships, held this year in Melbourne from 2-6 May. Vic Metro coach Wayne Siekman said the allure of coaching in front of friends and families played a big part in going around for a third campaign as coach. “That’s one of the big reasons I wanted to go again for one more year the opportunity to coach these girls in front of their families in our home state and showcase the Metro academy,” Siekman said. “It’s one of the most important and key things this year to be able to do that with this playing group.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity to coach them and help them through these situations.” The selected Stingrays players all featured in the Youth Girls Academy Challenge grand final, with the Dandenong contingent holding aloft the inaugural premiership. “Following on from last year, where we had a lot of success from the running side in Perth, we’ve built a very good foundation to continue the same trend this year,” Vic Metro coach Wayne Siekman said. “But saying that we’ve got a really good injection of a lot of tall, athletics players as well.” Beaconsfield midfielders Georgia Gee, Tyla Hanks and debuting Victorian representative Brooke Struylaart were rewarded for their stellar Stingrays campaigns as were Eagles midfielder Kayla Ripari and 2015 schoolgirls All Australians - Lyndhurst’s Emily Browning and Cranbourne’s Courtney Jones.

Getting a second chance at Vic Metro duties, Cranbourne midfielder Georgia Gourlay will get a chance to put to rest her difficult campaign in 2015. Gourlay sustained a serious knee injury only 13 minutes into the championships, held last year in Perth, and is on the mend in preparation for a return to Vic Metro colours. While Gourlay hasn’t been able to play since the injury, Siekman said her hard-work and tenacity off the field and during training made her a prime candidate for selection. “We picked the girls with the best credentials and the best players that deserve an opportunity to represent the Vic Metro team,” Siekman said. “Although she hasn’t been doing it on the field, she’s been doing everything on and more off the field, rehab and ticking all the boxes of an ACL recovery. “She’s one of the best kicks I’ve seen at Youth Girls level, and she’s gone straight back to hitting targets

Brooke Struylaart's impressive year for Beaconsfield, South East Juniors interleague and Dandenong Stingrays has earned her a spot on the Vic Metro Youth Girls team alongside a sea of Stingrays teamPicture: JARROD POTTER mates. 151191 and has plenty of confidence.” Dandenong Stingrays captain Georgia Walker has been picked for the Vic Country team by her Stingrays coach Scott Gowans, alongside premiership team-mates Suede Croad, Bridie Kennedy, Zoe Mitchell, Emily Rylance and Sam Ryan.

YOUTH GIRLS STATE REPRESENTATIVES VIC METRO: Dandenong - Jordyn Allen, Emily Browning (Lyndhurst), Georgia Gee, Tyla Hanks, Brooke Struylaart (Beaconsfield), Courtney Jones, Kayla Ripari, Georgia Gourlay (Cranbourne), Jasmine Grierson, Jess Provan, Jess Smith. Top award for Hutchy By RUSSELL BENNETT DEVON Meadows star Matt Hutchinson was last Friday recognised for his tireless effort and outstanding leadership in the West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) Warriors’ Country Week campaign, taking home the Glasscock Medal as the representative team’s best player. Hutchinson also led his Panthers side into the semi-finals of the WGCA’s District tier this season with 243 runs and 47 wickets, including best bowling figures of 8/38, an average of 11.9 and an economy rate of just 2.4. But it was in Hutchinson’s Warriors gear that he shone brightest in season 2015-16, with the tall left-arm seamer spearheading the bowling attack in all four games of the carnival and taking eight wickets at just 14. His leadership, in particular, stood out across the week. Hutchinson also won the Glasscock Medal in 2005 when he was at the Nyora Cricket Club and joins an exclusive list of players two have twice taken home the award. Pakenham’s Chris Smith rubber stamped his reputation as an absolute great of the WGCA on Friday night by taking out

Devon Meadows gun Matt Hutchinson was recognised on Friday night for his performance in the WGCA Country Week campaign, winning the Glasscock Medal – presented here by George Glasscock. 152544 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS the top individual honour - the Terry Stephenson Medal. Smith polled 18 votes to win by two from Cardinia’s champion spinner Dwayne Doig, with Kooweerup legend Chris O’Hara a further vote behind. The star Lions all-rounder had a simply brilliant all-around season, scoring a whopping 786 runs at an average of 49.1 - including four centuries. But he was also stellar with the ball, taking 23 wickets at an average of just 11.6 and an economy rate of 2.7. What separates the greats from the rest of the pack is that those great players refuse to

rest on their laurels. They can’t - their minds won’t let them. They’re perfectionists. “(The premiership) makes this so much sweeter,” Smith said about his medal on Friday night. “It caps off a great year and you know you’ve contributed and done your part. “Last season I had a down year by my personal and perceived standards. “I’ve always been my own harshest critic - you can always do better. “If you make a hundred, you can always make 150.”

Southern gets to the point By JARROD POTTER WNPL - ROUND 5 THEY’RE on the board. Southern United has been banged up in its first four WNPL clashes - including last week’s 0-8 thrashing by Alamein FC - but the pink-and-blue battalion surged on Sunday to record a one-all draw against Heidelberg United. It was Southern’s first point in the ultra-competitive league and started with a bang as Saphri Lines (19’ pen) slotted the go-ahead goal from a penalty, after a handball in the box from Heidelberg. It took a Matilda to knock over Southern’s best chance yet at a maiden victory as Melissa Barbieri (79’), was subbed into the game in the second half - not in the goals though - and the former Australian women’s soccer team captain slotted the equaliser in the dying stages of the second half. United now travels to Geelong to face Galaxy United on Saturday afternoon. Dandenong City had a howler against Kingston City on Monday night, downed 0-1 after a Damian Iaconis (27’) first half goal. STATE LEAGUES Contrasting fortunes for Casey Comets and Berwick City as the men’s and women’s sides split the wins on an interesting afternoon around the south east. Casey Comets smashed Mooroolbark 3-1 to stay near the top of State League 1 South East as Ryan Hughes (two goals) and Naseer Mohammad strolled past the visitors’ defences. The Comets women however failed to fire, falling 1-3 to Boroondara Eagles as only Laura Mcdonald managed to score for the Cranbournebased side. Berwick City men suffered another tough defeat, downed 0-3 by Warragul United as the SL1SE newcomers to continue searching for their best soccer. Berwick City’s women fared much better in their Women’s State League 1 South East matchup against Whitehorse United, booted four goals

Saphri Lines' penalty strike helped Southern United get the first point in its WNPL history. 152620 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS via a Kelsey Minton (10’, 20’ and 50’) hat-trick and a nice addition from Ellie Priest (30’) approaching the half. Phoenix Lawton helped Doveton SC rise over the top of Beaumaris as his match opening goal set the stage. Elliott David added the second before Lawton completed his brace to smash through the Sharks’ best efforts. Hampton Park Sparrows split the points 1-1 with Skye United as a Stephen Ngoneh goal was enough to take a point.

Casey’s women are also second on the ladder, with a perfect record just edged out on percentage by Melbourne Uni. Casey’s youth men had the toughest time of all, copping the side’s only loss of the weekend with a 69-76 result against Corio Bay. BIG V - ROUND 3 SWEEPING aside Warrandyte and Sherbrooke, the Casey Cavaliers senior sides cantered to victory in their Big V clashes. The Venom men struggled to mount any reasonable offence against the Cavaliers which picked off 22 and 23 to bookend a 75-44 triumph. Coach Stewart Baird gave his starters a good rest as he rotated the side throughout the night. The roster-wide rampage put the visitors in the driver’s seat as nothing Warrandyte mustered could stop the Casey offensive spree. Dean Johnson (14 points, 14 rebounds) led the charge to victory alongside Matt Witherden (eight points, 11 rebounds) and Ash Szalek (seven points, five rebounds, four assists, one block). The best news to come from the night was the return of Lester Strong (eight points), who made it back on court after sustaining a broken finger in the pre-season clash against Pakenham. The side still has might left to come in as Brent Hobba looks to return from an ankle injury in upcoming rounds. Casey sits second on the Big V Division 1 ladder - with a three-and-one record only bested by long-time rivals Shepparton (3-0) - as the side looks set to maintain the fine form of its

Goal spree for Scorpions By JARROD POTTER VFL - ROUND 1 BRUTALLY pumping its next-door neighbour, Casey started the VFL season with a barrage aimed directly at Frankston. A 27-goal spree left little to smile about for the Dolphins after the Scorpions cantered home in a 144-point drubbing. Everything was thrown up to challenge Casey’s run, but none of these obstacles seemed to halt the rampage. From the first quarter things went awry for the Scorpions. Only four minutes in they were one-down as Jack Trengove failed a concussion test following a huge hit. Then it got worse as emerging ruckman Max King fell awkwardly, in what a lot of people suspect is a serious knee injury that will derail his season. It left the door open for Frankston as the visitors started chipping away at the deficit through the second term - by and away its best effort for the evening. Casey’s fortunes only got worse through the second half as Jay Kennedy-Harris (hamstring) was the next to fall while Christian Petracca was held

Even with these challenges, Casey thumped any Frankston initiative. A spree of 19 goals on the trot sealed the Scorpions’ success as the link-up play from Angus Brayshaw, Petracca, Jayden Hunt and Mitch White proved too potent. Frankston’s 205cm Michael Sikora

had his hands full with Casey’s fillin tappers Cam Pedersen and Declan Keilty - who chopped out excellently after King went down. The forwards had it handed to them on a plate and Tim Smith (5 goals), Sam Weideman (4) and Keilty (3) ticked all the boxes necessary in the runaway victory. “The reflection of the result was a

lot of hard work that we were doing behind the scenes and a lot of people don’t realise that we’re doing,” Casey coach Justin Plapp said. “For us it’s really positive as we didn’t have any passengers - the first half there were areas of the game we needed to get right and we ended up breaking them and hitting the scoreboard.” Plapp thought for the Casey-listed players, Keilty in the ruck stood out jumping into Sikora all night - Angus Scott was up and about and skipper Jack Hutchins was solid across the field. The door is now open for Casey’s VFL-listed junior ruckman Oscar Mcinerney, who will likely fill the spot vacated by King. Casey’s squad will only get stronger as vice-captain Eddie Morris returns to the line-up. Earning its spot atop the VFL ladder, with a whopping 511.43 per cent to boot, Plapp thinks it’s an indication of the side’s increased strength this year, despite the ins/outs list from the off-season. “We were in the same position last year - on top of the ladder after round 4... I think our list is in better shape even though a lot of people think we’ve

lost a lot of expertise and older players,” Plapp said. “What we’ve gained are blokes that are enthusiastic and hungry and I think that’s the secret at VFL footy.” Casey now faces Collingwood at the Holden Centre on Sunday from 12.10pm.

Casey cops a surprise spray in close win By JARROD POTTER VFL WOMEN’S - ROUND 2 WHEN you say Seaford spray, you’d expect it to come from the beach and not the goal kicking as the hosts left the door ajar for Cranbourne’s first VFL victory. In a last term both sides would probably love to forget, Seaford booted two-goals-nine to Cranbourne’s solitary major as the visitors triumphantly claimed the 8.8 (56) to 6.17 (53) victory. Hayley Wildes and Marlee Tatham booted the Eagles comfortably ahead in the final term and from there, according to Cranbourne coach Kris Smith, it seemed as if the Tigerettes had given up. “It was really odd - about 10 minutes to go in the last term we were about 20 points up and seemed like Seaford stopped,” Smith said. “But they got a second wind and we misread it completely and came storming home - and it’s normally us doing that - so it was weird to see that coming to us.”

Cranbourne had to hold on against the last-ditch Seaford surge as the visitors rushed behinds to weather the worst of the storm in the dying minutes. The victory was set up much earlier in the clash as Cranbourne’s third term impressed as the trademark run-andcarry across the wings started to pay off. AFL-listed Danielle Hardiman impressed from her defensive post - with the coach labelling her mark-laden performance as one of the best afield - but across the board he couldn’t fault the side’s endeavour. The usual suspects Bianca Jakobsson, Hayley Wildes and Tess McEvoy streamed across the centre while Courtney Clarkson provided a big target up forward for the Eagles as she continues her rise back to her best footy after some time out of the game. Across all lines the side impressed, but the finishing in front of goals and around the forward arc needs improvement as the side couldn’t get the job

done from 25 metres out. “We had a lot of contributors across the board - even Steph Binder down at full back was good,” Smith said. “Half forward line was good and mids were good, defensively we were good across the board. “Just in front of the goals we stood around, missed a handball and it’s that fine tuning we have to do, but we’re

not going to worry as it’s only round two.” Cranbourne will unfurl the 2015 VWFL Division 1 premiership flag this week as it finally heads home to face Melbourne Uni on Sunday as all the senior Eagles sides will play at Casey Fields. “The (Cranbourne) guys are playing on oval two and we’re down on

Tight game goes Amstel’s way as club storms greens AMSTEL GOLF MEN'S PENNANT AMSTEL took the long trek to Whittlesea to play Melton Valley who were relegated from Division 5 last season. The club was expecting a tough match and definitely got what they expected. Captain Brett Greenough got the first point on the board with a hard fought 2/1 win in a high quality match at number 7. Brett was 1 under par when he closed the match out with his Melton opponent Shane Killeen saying that he ‘played out of his skin’ to get so close. Big hitter Takunda Moyo found the narrow tree lined chutes a challenge and a wayward driver contributed to a 4/3 loss. Jayson Tepokua also battled at number 5 and despite striking the ball well, found the less than perfect greens tricky and succumbed 42. Big Kirk Tuati got ‘played’ at number 1. The usually unflappable Club Champion lost 3/2 as the experienced

Mick Kaufman combined a solid game, and with years of match play experience put Melton in front 3 matches to 2. Lee James continued on his winning way at number 2. This match was real arm wrestle that turned 1 up in Amstel’s favour through 9 holes, however down 10, a poor decision that the rules official admitted was wrong seemed to fire James up. He won the 10th despite a favourable drop afforded to Melton’s Shaun McCrea, backed it up with another on 11 to go 3 up. A 3 putt loss on 12 was turned around with a par to win 13 and with another win on the tricky par 3 15th locked the contest at 3 matches apiece. This left Jack Hitchcock carrying the fortunes of the club on his broad shoulders. Hitchcock came to the 15th one 1 up and looked sure to extend the margin but 3 putted for a half. Simon Pengelly from Melton and Hitchcock traded pars on 16 and headed up the par 5 17th with Hitchcock still 1 up. A great drive put Amstel in the

box seat and when Hitchcock either hit a perfect punch 5 iron from 180 metres out, or completely knifed his 2nd shot 10 feet off the ground into the heart of the green, it set up a 2 putt birdie that sealed the match 2/1 and the contest 4/3. With results in the other matches going Amstel’s way, the club now sit undefeated - a game and 3 individual matches clear on top of the ladder. Another close encounter is expected next week when Amstel face old rivals Melbourne Airport at the tricky Churchill Park Golf Course, hoping to continue their winning form. COLTS PENNANT Amstel/Settlers Run went all the way to Whittlesea for an early morning tee time against local club Berwick Montuna. Another close encounter but this time our guys came out on top. Jack Harrison from Settlers is leading the way winning 5/3 while Jordyn Baker bounced back to the winners list with a crushing 6/4 victory. ‘Veteran’ Troy Harrison sealed the deal with a

3/2 win. Luke Punch and Jack Young were both defeated 4/3 however the Colts have moved to 3rd place on the ladder and play bottom side Yarrambat at Churchill Park next Sunday and will be looking to pressure the sides above them. LADIES PENNANT The ladies played Sandhurst on Friday at the tricky Yering Meadows Course and kept intact their unbeated record in a nail biting finish. Cheryl Thompson lead the way at number 1 with a resounding 6/4 win while Carol Casey was also dominant winning 5/4. Rhonda Cochrane, Kerry Young and Kay Grant were all on the wrong side of the ledger leaving Amstel precariously placed. Step up Mary Rohan and Kimberley Urmston who both won their matches down the 19th hole to secure the valuable point and keep Amstel at the head of the ladder a game and 3 individual matches clear. The girls have a tough task next week playing Eastern on their own patch of dirt but

Amstel’s Jack Hitchcock teeing off on the 1st hole at Whittlesea Golf Club. 152791 Picture: CONTRIBUTED with a stirring victory this week, spirits are high and we are looking forward to the challenge and hopefully extending the winning streak.

Mighty Eagles soar By DAVID NAGEL IT’S scary to even think about, but after nearly 900 goals in his career Cranbourne champion Marc Holt may be about to get even better! Holt provided the headline individual act of round one of the South East Football Netball League with a brilliant 12-goal performance in his side’s 148-point thrashing of Hampton Park. Coach Simon Goosey - a champion goal-kicker himself - said Holt was set for a big season. “It’s probably fair to say that he hasn’t had a great love for training over the years, but he hasn’t missed a beat and he’s as fit as he’s ever been,” Goosey said. “It’s allowing him to get up the ground a bit more and he’s reaping the rewards for a solid preseason.” The Eagles really did break the Redbacks’ spirit on Saturday, having a remarkable 31 shots at goal to six in the second half. Holt’s delightfuldozen was obviously the highlight, but the work of Mat Fletcher and Shaun Marusic through the midfield, and the run and carry of youngsters like Zac Roscoe, three goals, and Dylan Cavalot were the other positives going forward. Michael Theodoridis kicked four first-quarter goals before being taken off with an ankle injury. Nathan Dawes and ruckman Billy Thomas were best for the Redbacks. Reigning premier Berwick has thrown down the gauntlet to its eight challengers with a superimpressive 50-point victory over Beaconsfield at Edwin Flack Reserve. Sure the Wickers have played better footy over the last 12 months, but the most impressive thing was the way their new recruits performed in their first outings. Jake Wilson returned to his former club with a silky display through the midfield, Mark Weekes was hard-working on his way to four goals, and half-back Riley Heddles had a great battle with former Western Bulldog Daniel Giansiracusa. After a tight first half the Wickers took command of the Battle of the Creek, booting 11 goals to four after the break. Ben Kearns and Luke Nelson sparked the second-half onslaught, kicking five apiece, while Michael Riseley and Heddles controlled things down back. Wilson and Michael Harold were best of the midfielders for the Wickers, who went in to the game without their inspirational skipper Madi Andrews and former West Coast Eagle Ash Smith. Dual Norm Walker Medallist Scott Meyer was magnificent in the ruck for Beacy, Beau Dowler in fine touch up forward with four goals, and Giansiracusa immaculate with his foot skills. Pakenham has overcome a slow start to score a gutsy 15-point victory over a much-improved Tooradin at Toomuc Reserve. The Lions were second to the ball in the first term as lively Seagulls like Nick Lang, Josh Muling, Matt Livermore and Nathan Page took control of the contest. The Seagulls looked amazing,

Cranbourne superstar Marc Holt started his 2016 in style, kicking 12 goals against Picture: ROB CAREW Hampton Park on Saturday. 152596 with Andrew Dean dangerous up forward, but an incident at the start of the second quarter changed the complexion of the match. Pakenham’s Aaron Creasey was knocked out in a sickening, but fair, collision, the Lions responding with the next seven goals unanswered. Jake Smith kicked five, Kym Jones three, and Matt DeBruin and Luke Walker two, with Walker kicking the sealer in the dying minutes of the game. Dean kicked four, while Michael Wallace, Pat Chin and Chris Langley snagged two each.

And finally, Doveton made it two from two with a 29-point victory over Officer at Robinson Oval. Mitch Lewis kicked three for the Doves while Jarrad Boumann and Shaun Semmens capped off quality performances with two apiece. Ilan Osman snagged a couple for the Kangaroos who had Brenton Cowell, Ryan Spierings and ruckman Dylan Chapman put their best foot forward. Narre Warren had the bye.

New and improved Seagulls turn it on By DAVID NAGEL DID that really just happen? After a winless 2015 -Tooradin has upset the applecart with an eye-brow raising 16-goal, 59-43, victory over perennial powerhouse Pakenham at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday night. It’s only early, but the Seagulls performance was clearly the biggest statement of the season to date. And there was definitely no fluke about this win either, with the newand-improved Seagulls grinding the Lions in to the court before exploding away in the final term. They extended their lead by three goals in the opening three quarters before running away with a 17 to 10 final term. We all knew they were going to improve - but this much! “I was positive heading in to the game but I don’t know if the girls really believed but the belief is there now,” said new coach Kelly Haynes. “After not winning a game last year it was like we had won a grand final

and Pakenham was excited for us too. I think everyone felt for Tooradin last year because it’s not nice to go through an A Grade season without winning. I think winning is a skill, so it’s great to get that win out of the way early.” The Seagulls have been strengthened everywhere, with Haynes partnering Alex Duff in the attacking ring, Holly Gillespie and Emma Iacovou joining Shona Wells and Tara Smith in the midcourt, while Jess Maher has formed an instant connection with Ebony Dolan in defence. Meaghan Musgrove and Rebecca Cox tried hard for the Lions while Olivia Hunt and Caitlin Wright defended against a constant stream of supply. Beaconsfield has continued its recent dominance over cross-creek rivals Berwick, riding a dominant third quarter to a 45-39 victory at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Eagles - who defeated the Wickers twice last season - led by just two at half-time but scored 15 goals

to six to take complete control of the contest. Coach Simon O’Shanassy would have been particularly pleased with his sides’ all-court pressure, with Danni Cameron and Gabby Stinear keeping things tight in defence, Kaela Hughes, Mel Davies and Ciara Nelson strong through the midcourt, while Bianca Sanzaro’s combination with youngster Courtney Davey was simply unstoppable at times. Hampton Park will be breathing a deep sigh of relief after holding on for a 45-42 win over Cranbourne at Robert Booth Reserve. The Redbacks looked set for an easy afternoon with a 12-6 advantage at quarter time - but the young Eagles had other ideas. Led brilliantly by goal-shooter Tegan Stahl, the Eagles rammed home 15 goals to five to take a 21-17 lead. Tara Cecil and Alanah Hardy were brilliant in defence for the Eagles - but things changed again in the third.

Beaconsfield’s Kaela Hughes looks for a way past Berwick champion Sarah McDermott during Saturday’s Battle of the Creek. 152595 Picture: ROB CAREW Natu Fahnana, Chloe Birch, Monalisa Groom and Maddi Hanlen took control through the midcourt, providing Birgitta Nemaric and Ashlee Porter with plenty of opportunity to hit the scoreboard. In the final game of the round, Doveton warmed up for this week’s block-buster clash against reigning

premier Narre Warren with a comfortable 20-goal, 54-34, victory over ROC at Robinson Oval. The Doves got off to a fast start and never surrended their advantage, building their lead from six, to 15, to 17, and finally 20 at the final whistle. Narre Warren had the bye.

Sleek affordable status By DEREK OGDEN YOU have to hand it to Hyundai. A decade or so ago the South Korean automobile manufacturer churned out cheap and cheerful cars in which refinement was not a strong suit. Now, with the sixth generation of the Hyundai Elantra not only has refinement reached new heights, quality has followed while still maintaining its affordable status. And design no longer takes a back seat with Hyundai’s sleek design philosophy there for all to see. The latest Elantra is not lacking in specification, with two levels – Active and Elite (Premium has been dropped) – offering buyers choices not often found at this price point. At $21,490, the Active is marginally more expensive than the car it replaces but includes more than $2000 worth of added value, while the Elite carries $2000 to $2500 extra value. We were presented with the midrange Active automatic, at $23,790, plus on-road costs, to evaluate. It provided a clear insight into the Hyundai company philosophy. Striking new looks set the tone of the new Elantra, a key feature being a more assertive front end than before thanks to Hyundai’s ‘family signature’ hexagonal radiator grille, slimline headlamps and LED daytime running lights. From the side, sweeping char-

The latest Hyundai Elantra takes on a more assertive stance. nata and Tucson play their part with the Hyundai’s passenger cabin featuring driver-focused surroundings in which main controls are arranged in groups according to function – multimedia controls at the top, climate functions below on a stack angled towards the driver, and drive system operations on or behind the steering wheel. Occupants are offered more shoulder room front and rear (up 7 mm and 12 mm respectively) and more rear headroom (up 4 mm) and, at 59 mm, a heap more leg room. Ambience is enhanced by alloy-look air vent sur-

acter lines work well. Projector beam foglamps are standard across the range, while an impressive 0.27 drag coefficient is attained with the help of front wheel ‘air curtains’ – derived from the Sonata Hybrid – that help channel airflow around the wheels to minimise turbulence and wind resistance. Other wind cheaters include strategically positioned underbody covers, a new-design lower rear bumper spoiler and longer boot lid. Elantra’s stablemates, Genesis, So-

rounds and metallic-painted dashboard and door trim inserts. A touchscreen multimedia system with 7.0-inch TFT LCD display is now standard in both Active and Elite, offering wide-ranging connectivity, including USB, Aux, digital iPod and Bluetooth. Also standard is the Apple CarPlay system, including access to Siri voiceactivation. A six-speaker audio has steering wheel-mounted controls. Hyundai’s naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine has taken over from the previous Elantra’s 1.8 motor and is paired with either six-speed manual (Active only) or sixspeed automatic transmissions (Active and Elite). Maximum power of 112 kW and 192 Nm maximum torque are up two

per cent and eight per cent, respectively, on the outgoing Elantra. Lowend torque has been improved significantly, though its peak at 4000 rpm is very high. The electronically controlled sixspeed automatic transmission, available in both Active and Elite, features a lock-up torque converter and sequential manual shift mode. Six airbags (driver and front passenger, driver and front passenger side (thorax), and full length curtains) take care of passive safety and are standard across the Elantra range. Active safety in all variants is in the hands of Electronic Stability Control, including Traction Control, Anti-lock brakes, Electronic Brake force Distribution, Brake Assist and Vehicle Stability Management. Hill Start Assist helps in setting off on an incline. LED daytime running lights are augmented by automatic dusk-sensing headlamps, while rear-view camera and rear parking assist come to the aid when reversing. There may be what seem only minor increases in cabin dimensions of the new Elantra, but there is a feeling of a lot more space for occupants. Most appealing. The Hyundai range is available for test drive at Berwick Hyundai, 34 Kangan Drive, Berwick. Phone 9707 1212.

By DEREK OGDEN AS the world’s oldest car brand, talking about Peugeot is like discussing the universe at the time of the Big Bang. The Peugeot family has been making cars in 1889. Since then, the French carmaker has brought many fascinating cars. Our latest road test was of the Peugeot 208 hatchback, first seen here in 2013 and recently redesigned to include more technology and new drivetrains. New to the range in Australia is the Peugeot 208 Access, available with the 1.2-litre 60 kW engine and five-speed manual; or an uprated version of the 1.2 engine with 81 kW engine with an six-speed automatic, for $15,990 and $18,990, respectively. Another new kid on the block is the GT-Line automatic ($27,490), a car for those who want sporty elements and comfort, but without the hardcore performance of the 208 GTi ($30,990).

Peugeot 208 . . . designers have added modern features without losing sight of the heritage. Mid-range are the Active and Allure variants, both with automatic transmission only. The Peugeot 208, in our test car spec with metallic paint and reverse camera, comes to market at $27,280, plus on-road costs. Minus the two cost options it can be had for $25,990. Stylistically, the Peugeot 208 is bang up to date, with newest materials used in a creative manner. The latest 208’s redesigned front bumper features a sharper line, pairing with a wider, deeper grille with inte-

grated chrome rim. The two-tone finish of the automatic headlights see them with black and chrome masks. LED daytime running lights and cornering assist foglights turn up the effect on night-time vision. Wipers are automatic too. The LED tail lights now incorporate a redesigned cluster featuring Peugeot’s signature 3-D ‘claws’ motif, but designers retained the sculpted side and chrome window trim from the previous model.
