Shattered dream By GEORGIA WESTGARTH IT WAS their family dream home in Cranbourne East that they will never get to move into as a family. Sangeeta Sirohi and her husband Rajneesh were putting the finishing touches on their new home when doctors diagnosed tragedy. The mother of two was told she had advanced leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the uterus in April last year – and she passed on Sunday 10 January, leaving behind a heartbroken husband, 12-year-old son and four-yearold daughter. Their daughter is currently unaware of her mother’s death as her father, Rajneesh battles with debt, selling his dream home, depression and great grief, after he was forced to quit his job to look after his two children. But it’s been the recurring burglaries to the turnkey property which has added strain and heartache to what has been a devastating turn of events. Thieves stripped the brand new home over three separate break-ins, taking with them a new video intercom, vanities, lighting, ducted heating, oven and cooktop and doorbell among other things. But it’s been the incredible kindness from the most unlikely place that has warmed the family’s broken heart. He’s been called an “angel by the late Sangeeta’s brother, Sanjeev, and he has a goal to raise $100,000 for the struggling family. Lucas Petrovich, director at Century 21 Results in Cranbourne, was chosen by Rajneesh to sell his family’s dream home, after deciding he couldn’t do it without his beloved wife. The couple had been planning and saving for the home for many years and relative Sanjeev told Star News the shock and continuous break-ins to the home Sangeeta and Rajneesh (Raj) “built with so much love and hope has “totally broken Raj. “My sister and her family spent their whole lives living in a small flat, saving money to build a house of their dreams but
it’s sad and a shame that it couldn’t happen, Sanjeev said. Sanjeev quit his job in the UK to be with his younger sister before she passed and aid his family in their time of need. “The children have suffered a lot in every sense, the illness and death of my sister has affected Raj and the whole family quite immensely, he said. “Raj is on the verge of a breakdown, he is in a very vulnerable situation. But being a very proud man he doesn’t want to share his agony with anyone, he is someone who hardly would ask for help. Estate agent, Lucas said he could understand what the family was going through, having lost his own dad at age five, while building a family home. “My father died of cancer and I know what my mum went through, she was left in a very hard situation, it’s just a co-incidence that they too were half way through building when dad died, Lucas said. The young family is currently living in a rental home in Cheltenham, while Rajneesh drives taxis so he can pick up his children from school. Lucas hopes any cent he can raise for the family will help them get back on their feet financially. “We have a ‘go fund me’ account and we got $8000 donated in just nine days, Lucas said. But it’s the pain of a stolen future that hurts the most. The new home has been broken into three times – once was on Easter Sunday – and Lucas said such crime was common in Cranbourne. “We see a lot of new homes getting robbed, we heard the mains were switched off to steal the heating so they obviously know what they are doing, Lucas said. Sanjeev, who had to return to the UK due to visa restrictions, said he has no words for Lucas. “He is an angel. I hope his fund-raising campaign helps the family. To donate to the Sirohi’s visit: www.gofundme.com/g4w8hmps or contact Century 21 Results Cranbourne on 5991 3888.

Booze super slam By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS CASEY mayor Sam Aziz has slammed a state liquor regulatory body’s approval of a Dan Murphy’s super barn in Cranbourne East. Cr Aziz said the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation over-ruled a chorus of objections on public-harm grounds against the Linsdell Boulevard project. The objections came from bodies such as Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Casey Council and public health experts. “The decision makes a mockery of what we’re trying to put in place in Casey.” He called for reform of the state’s Liquor Licencing Act for more weight being put on social harms such as family violence. “The recent Royal Commission (into family violence) established a strong link between alcohol and family violence. “There wouldn’t be a single expert in Australia that would object with that.” Cr Aziz said the council would consider appealing against the decision within the 28-day cut-off - after weighing up the financial cost with its “absolute responsibility to protect our community from harm”.
Casey Mayor Sam Aziz. He said commentary that opposed the council’s stance was “intellectually poor”. “If you’re looking at diversity of venues alone, there are already 70 outlets in Casey. “It’s not like we’re deprived of obtaining a legal product. “We just don’t need any more, especially in Cranbourne East, which has the highest incidence of family violence in the City of Casey.” In its 11 April ruling, the VCGLR found there was little evidence the store would increase alcohol consumption.
“Even if customers in the relevant area would enjoy lower prices for a particular type or brand of liquor, the lower price may not result in the purchase of more liquor.” Experts led evidence of strong links between the supply of packaged alcohol and family violence, especially in disadvantaged areas. The Casey area is highest ranked for family violence involving alcohol in the state - with the highest intervention order breach rate in the vicinity of the site. Police data showed high levels of alcohol-related offences in the vicinity of the store’s site - particu-
larly immediately to the site’s west. There were also high incidences of family violence police callouts in Cranbourne East - in the top 1 per cent for metro Melbourne. On behalf of Dan Murphy’s, consultant Jane Homewood told the VCGLR that many of those figures were raw figures skewed by Casey’s large, fast-growing population. Per capita, Casey was among the lowest alcohol-related offences and family violence rates, she said. A Dan Murphy’s spokeswoman told Star News that it strived to be “Australia’s most responsible drinks retailer”. “We are committed to continuing our working relationship with local council, local police and the community in relation to our Cranbourne East development.” A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the police were reviewing the decision to determine if it would appeal. A State Government spokesman said it could not over-rule the proposal. This was challenged by the state opposition, which stated that a previous Labor government had provided planning exemptions for liquor outlets as part of the Cranbourne East structure plan in 2010.
Vox Pop STAR News hit the streets to find out what Cranbourne locals thought of the approved Dan Murphy’s super barn landing in their neighbourhood - opinions were divided.

ises in a huge range which is also important. They offer a good range, good price and they’re a good operational store,” Mr Gentle said. “I don’t think a Dan Murphy’s here will make one iota of difference to family violence - if they want booze they’ll get it.” Local florist Lisa Reid from Cranbourne East, echoed Mr Gentle’s sentiments saying, jobs and competition will be healthy for the area. “For me it’s not a huge issue, I haven’t nor do I know anyone in the area affected by family violence, but if they want to drink, they’ll get it somewhere,” the 34-year-old said. Long-term Casey residents Wendy and Dixon Kenney have opposed the Dan Murphy’s site for 16 months, saying “alcohol breaks up families”. “We tried to support stopping the super barn because we believe if the police are against it, they’ve got good reason to be,” Ms Kenney, 72, said. “Because they are the ones that have to go and pick up all the mess, between youth suicide and youth uselessness, addiction and family violence. I think we should take on board what the police say. “Casey has a huge suicide rate
among children, and the property market is booming we have to stop and care and get back to reality.” Mr Kenney, 77, said the price was what bothered him the most. “Dan Murphy’s is almost a discount liquor store, so it’s going to be cheaper to get more and it’s easily available,” he said. Hunt Club resident Jaswinder Bains fears the repercussions of the liquor outlet on the community in 10 years’ time. “I believe this is going to be wasted community space,” Mr Bains, 36, said. “That land could be utilised for something better, like a health, wellbeing or community centre, something which impacts the community in a positive way rather than people spending their money on alcohol,” he said. “I think a chain company like Dan Murphy’s which is providing much more variety in one store will negatively affect the health of the community in the long run.” Sergeant Ian Lane, from the Casey Family Violence Unit (CFVU), was reported in The Age as saying that family violence offences involving alcohol usually stemmed from consuming drinks inside the home.

STATE Opposition leader Matthew Guy has called for the resignation of Labor Minister for Planning Richard Wynne over what should have been a simple cap on alcohol venues in Casey. The approval of a Dan Murphy’s super barn in family violence hotspot, Cranbourne East, sparked Mr Guy to speak his mind over the contentious overruling by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation. This follows objections from Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Casey Council and public health experts, whose advice should have been heeded, Mr Guy said. “If the council, the ambos and the police are asking you to do something, you’re probably best taking their advice,” Mr Guy told Star News. “I would have thought that was the best way, to take their advice and put a cap on the number of liquor venues, and if a space comes available- if one closes- then they have one up for grabs but put a cap on it.” “When I was the planning minister, the City of Stonnington came to me and said we have too many
alcohol venues in this area can you put a cap on it? And there was no problem, we capped it at the Chapel Street area.” Mr Guy has blamed Minister Wynne. “If a minister can’t intervene when police and ambulance ask them to, then frankly he should just hand his resignation,” Mr Guy said. Recently revealed as Australia’s fastest growing suburb by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Cranbourne East was reported to have grown by 88 people per week during the last financial year. And the high incidence of family violence police callouts in Cranbourne East puts it in the top one per cent for metro Melbourne. However, some locals have dismissed the alcohol link to family violence saying, “if they don’t buy it at Dan Murphy’s, they’ll go down the road and buy it elsewhere.” Cranbourne East resident Terry Gentle has welcomed the outcome by the VCGLR, saying he will be a customer once it opens. “I was disappointed it hasn’t gone up sooner,” he told Star News. “I think it should go ahead, I feel that even though we have a lot of liquor outlets Dan Murphy’s special-

Anzac Day 2016
War service shaped lives BY JARROD McALEESE THE Japanese bombing of Darwin sent shockwaves through Australia ... and it was this event that inspired Warragulborn Stan Beazley to enrol in the armed forces to “fight for his country”. A country boy destined to grow up and work the farm his family lived on, Beazley, now 92, was exempted from army enlistment during World War II, but this did not deter him from joining the fight. Stationed in Darwin, Mr Beazley was deployed with the Australian General Transport Company as a driver, delivering bombs, petrol, supplies and personnel. He said that everyone, regardless of their role, was forced to be on constant alert. “We were always on guard, carrying weapons. I could never relax, even when I was off duty,” Mr Beazley said. During harvest leave from the army, Stan met a woman named Melva - who he married within three weeks.
In late 1944, Mr Beazley was informed that he was being discharged from the army. He and his wife raised five children in the years after the war and he said that Anzac Day would always be important to him. “We must show respect and remember those that didn’t return from the war,” Mr Beazley said. Mr Beazley is a resident of Villa Maria Catholic Homes (VMCH) Berwick. His neighbours Cedric Pobjoy and Freda Newsome also recalled how World War II shaped their lives. Mr Pobjoy, now 89, did not know whether he would see war when he joined the Royal Australian Air Force on his 18th birthday in 1943. An apprentice fitter and turner, he began to question his decision while sleeping on concrete in the grandstand of the MCG, which had been requisitioned by the government for military use. Mr Pobjoy was not deployed for combat, and in his 18 months of aircraft en-

gineering training in Victoria and South Australia met his future wife, Elva. The pair married in 1948 and had two children, eventually settling down in Berwick. British native Ms Newsome, now 96, served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service in England from 1941 to 1945 after deciding it was more preferable than other lines of work. “As a woman, if you didn’t join the navy, you got stuck in a factory or something, and I didn’t fancy that,” Ms Newsome said. Gaining experience in maintaining navy personnel pay records, Ms Newsome later worked as a pay clerk and finally a milk bar owner in Mordialloc where she settled with her husband and two sons. VMCH aged care residences across Melbourne will hold commemorative services on 25 April to honour those who lived and served through the world wars and subsequent military actions.

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A BUNGLED plan by the Casey council to name a part of Clyde North in memory of a specific WWI Digger has unearthed an honour roll of worthy local soldiers. Clyde historian Joan Vanderhorn said there is no link between the council’s initial chosen name, McPherson, after discovering the McPherson’s were actually from Clydesdale in northern Victoria. Ms Vanderhorn, editor of the ‘A Clyde History’ website said after much research she’s chosen two much loved Diggers from Clyde to be reviewed for the renaming. “I would love to see a part of Clyde North named Thomas or Churchill, both these men lost their lives at war at the same age and went to Clyde North Primary School,” Ms Vanderhorn said. Hedley Howard Thomas was 24 when he was shot by a sniper in July 1918, while binding the wounds of a comrade. Ms Vanderhorn said Mr Thomas was a stretcher bearer and came from a community-minded family. “In Clyde he worked as a farm labourer with his family in Tuckers Road,
Corporal George Charles Churchill, who died at war, aged 24 and lived in Clyde North. his family was instrumental in starting the Methodist Church in Clyde in 1909, which is still standing today - it is now a private home,” she said. Ms Vanderhorn, who grew up in Clyde, said her other pick from a long honour list of worthy soldiers is Corporal George Charles Churchill. “George Churchill was killed in action in Mont St
Quentin France after three years on active service in September 1918,” she said. “He worked in Clyde as a chaff-cutter and lived in Clyde North - he was considered an outstanding student. “When he signed up for the Australian Infantry Forces people said in the newspapers that he was sure to be awarded the Victoria Cross, because he was spo-
ken so highly of in the community.” George Churchill was the son of George and Martha Churchill (nee Ridgway), and grandson of Clyde pioneer, Anthony Ridgway. Ms Vanderhorn has put the Casey council’s mistake down to poor research. “They didn’t take the extra step, on the enlistment form for McPherson it states Clydesdale, not Clyde,” she said. Peter Gillieron, from the Casey council, has advised that council has compiled a list of names of former soldiers who served in WWI and lived in the Clyde North area. “Council has initiated discussions with both the Metropolitan Planning Authority and the Office of Geographic Names,” Mr Gillieron said. “These discussions are ongoing and, once concluded, will be presented at a future meeting of Council for its consideration.” Mr Gillieron also confirmed that the link between McPherson and the Clyde area was not strong enough to pursue the name into the future. Letters Watch your own ward OUR mayor was on the news last week stating that Casey council would fight against a liquor store being built in Cranbourne East. As stated, this was due to the high levels of family violence within the City of Casey and more so in the Cranbourne East area. Now, there are many factors to family violence, not just alcohol. We have drugs, money stress, and mental issues and this is just a few. I would like to ask the mayor, knowing Casey Central opened its newly extended shopping centre on 17 March, what input did the mayor have in stopping another bottle shop that has opened up outside the centre, making two within walking distance of each other - and this is in his ward! Casey council has criticised the approval of a Dan Murphy’s store in Cranbourne East, an area which has the highest incidence of family violence in the City of Casey, which itself has a high incidence of family violence involving alcohol. Here’s what our Facebook readers think.

How about a full breakdown of the statistics, who is actually committing this violence, or is it not PC to identify them? Mat Oldaker via Facebook. I wish they would stop sprouting this rubbish about Cranbourne, show us the facts! Gail Catlow via Facebook. Cut it out. I would like to see all the figures on alcohol related domestic violence in Cranbourne East and what the boundary of Cranbourne East is. We have a quiet neighbourhood here and never hear any violence or ever see a police car in the entire estate. And I personally think a liquor outlet will not contribute to any issues. They argue there are plenty of outlets already. Not in Cranbourne East there isn't. There is one Liquorland. That's it. Daniel Novak via Facebook.

Can your journalists challenge the figures that were put out in The Age article on this matter today? I feel it provides a poor representation of the City of Casey, and this attention on the development of a Dan Murphy's store in the growth corridor of Cranbourne East is unfavourable. The housing growth of the area needs further infrastructure and support for amenities rather than nay-sayers blocking the services/ stores/ roadways that are needed. Furthermore, it is particularly unkind to tarnish this growing area by almost calling for the old prohibition laws and providing a warped view of the growth area (Cranbourne East). The numbers for this council are relevant to the council being the largest in Melbourne, and these numbers are relevant to the entirety of council rather than one new/ growing suburb. The State Government’s campaign on tackling family violence and pledged funding is a very different matter to introducing a liquor store in the growth suburb of Cranbourne East. Don't mistake the two. Jacki Bray-Smith via Facebook. It’s not alcohol that is the cause of domestic violence but it doesn't help the situation. Drugs and money are the issue. Alcohol just adds fuel to the fire that’s already out of control. Get rid of the drugs and help the community find work and be stable. Lisa Moorby via Facebook.
We have lived in Cranbourne East (The Hunt Club) on the Cameron Street entrance for 13 years. We have never seen or heard anything of a violent nature and rarely see any police cars. My husband and I are not big consumers of alcohol, however would love to see Dan Murphy's in our complex! We believe it would be an asset to the shopping centre! Can't understand why most other new complexes have liquor stores, eg. recently opened Casey Central has two, Mr Aziz?? If someone wants alcohol they will find it just like any other suburb! It would be very much appreciated if you would please refrain from any more adverse criticism of our suburb sir! Leanne Goff via Facebook. Rubbish. Violence-sodden? It's a lovely place to live. Never had or seen any issues that you don't see anywhere! Gail Catlow via Facebook. Drugs are actually the main cause of violence. Show us real stats about alcohol and drugs and a lot actually combine them which makes it worse. Michael Kuc via Facebook. We don't have money for alcohol! We all just built houses! TRADESMEN have saved an injured snake in Cranbourne West. The highly venomous copperhead snake was found on a construction site on Everlasting Boulevard in Cranbourne West about 1pm on Wednesday 13 April. The region’s snake catcher Barry Goldsmith said he was very impressed with the way the Winslow Construction workers handled the deadly animal. “Normally builders just kill the snakes but they had it in a hessian bag in the site office. I wish everybody did it like that,” Ms Goldsmith said. “They found it in the dirt where they were digging and there’s a lot of heavy machinery down there so I’m not surprised it was injured.” Mr Goldsmith took the mature copperhead to the Karingal Vet Hospital, where it will get stitches. “I’ll look after the snake for about a month until the stitches come out and then I will release it into natural swamp land in the greater Cranbourne area,” he said. Mr Goldsmith said copperhead snakes are often mistaken for brown snakes. “I’m in Casey all the time catching snakes, copperheads are the most common in southwest Cranbourne - they are very gentle snakes and reluctant to bite.”
Racing fans got to shake hands with three of their idols at Autobarn Narre Warren last week. Red Bull Racing Australia V8 Supercar drivers Craig Lownes, Shane Van Gisbergeten and Jamie Whincup were instore signing autographs for appreciative fans. AN ACCUSED man showed a certain contempt for courtroom etiquette in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court last week. He laughed and let out an audible burp, raising a stern word of caution from the judge. “Is your client well?” the magistrate asked the man’s lawyer. “I’m not having anyone sitting in court burping. It’s discourteous.” The accused smirked and piped up: “Sorry Your Honour. I won’t burp.” “It’s not funny,” the judge said and promptly the smile disappeared.
A CASEY councillor had a modest view of his own artistic judgement at a council meeting on 19 April. Gary Rowe labelled himself an “artistic troglodyte” ahead of launching into a passionate defence of the council’s plans to acquire art for Bunjil Place. There was a little stumble when referring to the lauded Cranbourne artist Ern Trembath. “He would be one (artist) who would deserve the honour of being hung in the gallery,” Cr Rowe said. Colleague Mick Morland retorted that he would, in that case, need some rope.

Though he’s a Carlton Draught man, Mr Rout said he liked the Two Up’s solid flavour. “It’s a heavy beer with a bit of depth.” Mr Wells, who is the Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL president, says it’s a beer that sends a signal about what modern RSLs are trying to send to younger members. “We’re a club, not a museum.” Two Up Beer is served at RSL sub-branches in Clow Street, Dandenong and 1475 South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne.

that nods to the tri-forces and the Anzac 100-year heritage. “Everything in defence has to have a meaning,” Mr May says. As Mr Rout sips from a pot, he recalls a memory from 10 years ago. When a large pallet of alcoholic beverages was accidentally delivered to the frontline in Balibo, East Timor. “At the front of all our minds was this pallet, but we weren’t allowed to drink.” ‘Rowdy’ says a soldier had to be posted to guard the pallet for several days.

BEER seems to be a common language, a social conduit for all generations of veterans. Get three veterans of separate missions - Vietnam serviceman John Wells, with East Timor peacekeeper Colin ‘Rowdy’ Rout and Young Veterans founder Scott May - together with the amber liquid and the stories start to flow. “The equipment and technology may be different, but the stories are still the same,” Mr Wells says. “So are all the lies we all tell. Talk to me at 4pm on Anzac Day and I’ll tell you I have four VCs,” he jokes. The three veterans are sampling a Dandenong and Cranbourne RSL offering, a microbrewery-brewed Two Up Beer. It’s been an initiative of Young Veterans to distribute a craft beer to RSLs, one that appealed to modern servicepeople who were adventurous in their beer tastes. Yet, the pale ale has a dark enough colour and malty flavour that won’t alienate the older veterans, Mr May said. To make sure, the beer has been market-tested by a panel of veterans from a range of conflicts. It has Anzac roots - 50 per cent Australian hops, and 50 per cent New Zealander. And it’s branded with a nostalgic logo

School stays sustainable By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ZANIA Cope has been in the top job just six months and has already dubbed Tooradin Primary School the most sustainable school she’s ever worked at. Ms Cope replaced longserving principal Marg Scarce after 17 years at Tooradin primary and calls her an “icon of the place.” “Marg set the school up so beautifully,” Ms Cope said. “And with the majority of our students moving on to Kooweerup Secondary, where my husband Michael teaches, the transition has just been beautiful.” Ms Cope, from Berwick, a teacher with 27 years of experience, said she fell in love with the school straight away. “When I first came to see the school, I was alerted to a family of blue tongue lizards that live on the school grounds and you just don’t get that elsewhere,” Ms Cope said. Born in New Zealand, Ms Cope said the “country feel” of Tooradin reminded her of her home town, Timaru. “I grew up in a township of just 21,000 people and since starting here I have been amazed at the incredible local support,” she said. Ms Cope has been ap-

The school recently received 30 strawberry plants and about 10 rhubarb plants from neighbour Doris Crowley and her late
husband Jack. “She is also donating two water tanks for us as well and Alan Erskine from Doveton donates $20 a week for our cooking program,” Ms Cope said. The Tooradin Dalmore Football Netball club recently gave the school $2500 to install a water system for their growing vegie patch. “This community is amazing, I can’t believe it they just give us access to everything,” Ms Cope said.

Yet he received scripts for 600 tablets by Frankston Healthcare clinicians despite them noting he was “clearly benzodiazepine dependent and drug seeking”, Ms Jamieson stated. Ms Jamieson found the prescription of methadone and diazepam may have exarcerbated the worsening of Mr Frood’s respiratory health, though she didn’t find Mr Frood’s death was “preventable”. “Mr Frood was clearly engaged in prescription shopping and at the time of his death, as is the case even today, there were no effective tools available for prescribing doctors to establish who else a patient had attended for scripts.” An urgently-needed realtime prescription monitoring (RTPM) system may have picked up his prescription shopping before his death, she stated. An RTPM could also pick up doctors with “suboptimal” prescribing practices, and provide warnings of potentially harmful drug combinations. Ms Jamieson noted that 80 per cent of Victoria’s rising rate of overdose deaths involved pharmaceuticals. “If Victoria continues to link its RTPM efforts with nationally co-ordinated initiatives then there could be ongoing significant delays causing the deaths to continue unabated.”
According to stats cited by the State Coroner, 65 people died of a drug overdose in Casey between 2009/15 - the sixthhighest metro area in the state. Of those, pharmaceuticals (55) were involved more than illicit drugs (22) or alcohol (12). Some of these deaths included combinations of the three categories. Among the biggest killers are the anti-anxiety drug diazepam, opioid painkillers such as codeine, methadone and oxycodone, and anti-depressants. Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association chief executive Sam Biondo said it was time to recognise a “serious problem” with pharma death numbers rising to 330 in 2015. In other words, 73 more than the state’s road toll last year. “I’m not seeing a lot of action by the states or federally, and I’m at a total loss as to why,” Mr Biondo said. “We have to recognise how our society is being sold a lot of product by Big Pharma. And we are hooked on these products.” A spokeswoman for Health Minister Jill Hennessy said considerable planning had been done for real-time prescription monitoring. She said the current government was the first to commit funding - $300,000 - to the system, and had signed up to the Commonwealth’s software to support the system.

THE DEATH of a Hampton Park man - who was prescribed an unhealthy mix of over-thecounter drugs - has led a state coroner to call for an urgentlyneeded real-time prescription monitoring system. Frank Edward Frood, a 47-year-old severe asthmatic, had widespread bronchopneumonia in his lungs when paramedics were unable to revive him on his parents’ lounge room floor on 28 September 2012. In her report on Mr Frood’s death, Coroner Audrey Jamieson stated that low levels of the synthetic narcotic methadone, sedatives diazepam and oxazepam, the painkiller tramadol, the anti-manic drug olanzapine and ice were detected in the man’s blood. Mr Frood, a long-term heroin user, was given two supervised methadone treatments a week at Frankston Hospital as well as five unsupervised weekly doses. A seriously dependent, Mr Frood also “shopped” for prescribed diazepam from Frankston Healthcare and eight doctors from clinics in Hampton Park, Dandenong and Cranbourne in the last six months of his life. In that time, he was prescribed the equivalent of 360 tablets of diazepam from Frankston Healthcare.

EMMA Hayley was once embarrassed about her weight but two years on and now 60 kilograms lighter, she wears her triumph on her sleeve everywhere she goes. The proud single mother from Langwarrin recently got a tattoo of the name and logo of her beloved gym, Pinnacle Health Club in Cranbourne. Emma says she has “lost a person” in weight and owes her new healthy life and career goals to the gym that’s stuck by her for the past two years. “I know people will think getting a tattoo of a business is a bit crazy, but so is losing 60 kilograms - it’s a motivator every time I look down at it,” Emma said. Weighing in at 160 kilograms before she setfoot into Pinnacle Scoresby, Emma said she could hardly walk up the stairs to sign up, let alone work out. “I was scared and embarrassed, I was really big, unhealthy and unhappy, I never ate properly, never exercised, emotional eating got the best of me and it just got out of control,” Emma said. The 27-year-old said admitting her size was one of the hardest things to do. “I can’t ever remember being thin, I’ve always been overweight - since the weight loss my Grade 6 primary school jumper is too big, the clothes I buy now I’ve never bought before,” Emma said. “I would drive past Pinnacle every day and think I should go in and then one day I decided I had to set a good example for my two-year-old daughter Aurora.” Emma owes her transformation to the one gym she’s continued to go back to. “I’ve been to a lot of other gyms throughout my life and said I’m going to lose weight, but so many are intimating and expensive - at Pinnacle there’s no judgement,” she said. “I’ve experienced trainers at other gyms who treat you like you are lesser than them because you’re so unhealthy and let yourself get out of control and as a single mum I felt like I wasn’t good enough.

Emma Hayley, 27, before and after her weight loss transformation. Picture: CONTRIBUTED “At Pinnacle I first started just walking on the treadmill, they didn’t push me to get weighed when I didn’t want to. At Pinnacle it’s about meeting your goals and being strong and healthy - not getting skinny.” Emma is currently studying youth work and wants to help others beat their demons by becoming a personal trainer. “It would be my ultimate dream to work somewhere that has changed my life,” she said. “I want to help people to realise that physical and mental health are directly connected and it’s so important to work on them both.” The latest addition of ink to Emma’s new figure is what she calls her reward for sticking to her exercise regime despite her low points. “When I started two years ago I said to my first personal trainer, Ben Stallworthy, if I lose 20 kilograms I’ll get a Pin-
nacle tattoo but after reaching each goal I kept putting it off because I felt I didn’t deserve it.” Emma said the tattoo was initially just going to be the logo on her wrist. “But then I thought why not the name it’s something I say 50 times a day and I can’t imagine what the future would have been like for Aurora and I if it wasn’t for Pinnacle,” she said. “I’m so passionate about it and it may seem crazy but Pinnacle has just changed everything about my life, I owe it to them that I’ve achieved what I have, even though I still have a long way to go, I couldn’t be more grateful. “They helped me to change my body and now they’re on my body.” To follow Emma’s progress to lose another 20 kilograms like her Instagram page, ‘emmaragetsfit’.

Builder’s blue AN UNREGISTERED builder from Cranbourne West has been fined more than $30,000 after he was investigated by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) and failed to face a court hearing. In his absence, the Frankston Magistrates’ Court recently convicted and ordered the man to pay court costs on top of the hefty fine. The illegal contract was entered into in November 2013, which documented construction to be carried out at a site in Sandhurst. The Cranbourne West man did not hold a Domestic Builder-Manager registration and did not pay the required domestic builders warranty insurance
despite the contract being over $12,000. The VBA has confirmed that the dodgy builder had falsified the domestic building contract by including the name, registration and insurance details of a registered building practitioner, he claimed, had been engaged to carry out the work. However, the practitioner denied ever having been approached to be involved in the project. Investigations have revealed that the Cranbourne West builder also falsely listed the registered building practitioner’s name and registration number on the application for the permit, without permission- and had accepted payments of more
than $13,000 from the owners of the property. In the light of the court outcome, acting VBA CEO, Marlo Baragwanath, has encouraged prospective clients to check the identification of building practitioners, by requesting to see their registration card which includes photographic ID. “When carrying out building or renovations costing more than $5000, the first question you should ask a builder is ‘are you a registered building practitioner?’” Ms Baragwanath said. Consumers can check whether their builder is registered through the “Find a Practitioner” link on the VBA website (www.vba.vic.gov.au)
Flag pole a salute to Anzacs By GEORGIA WESTGARTH JAN Gilchrist, CEO at Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre, recognised a gap of knowledge around Anzac Day in her teenage students - and decided to do something about it. Ms Gilchrist is hoping a flagpole erected outside the Cranbourne North centre will help ignite a better understanding of the commemorative day. “It’s about educating our youth of today about our Anzacs - because I have seen a lack of awareness, they seem quit ignorant about the understating of what Anzac is,” Ms Gilchrist said. After years of encouraging her teenage students to engage in the special day, Ms Gilchrist has found another way through the Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program. “I applied for the grant for a flagpole late last year and we are planning on holding a service prior to Anzac Day next year at the centre,” she said. Ms Gilchrist and her students were presented with an Australian flag by Federal Holt MP Anthony Byrne and $1500 to go towards the installation of a flagpole.
Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre students with CEO Jan Gilchrist and Federal Holt MP Anthony Byrne. “The flag will help us to teach our teenage students about the protocols around raising the flag and having it at half-mast and it gives us a chance to engage with them about remembrance days,” Ms Gilchrist said. “I have tried to get them to come to local services but they just don’t, so this way they can observe and pay their respects.” The Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program was designed to preserve Australia’s wartime heritage and to involve people throughout the nation in a wide range of projects.

Students hit the streets STUDENTS pounded the pavement in a healthy fund-raising effort for their very own school. Cranbourne South Primary School held an ‘adidas School Fun-Run’ on Friday 15 April, in a bid to raise as much money as possible to go toward renovations. Fun Run organiser Megan Shaw said the school community was excited to get behind a fund-raising activity with a difference. “Parents enthusiastically supported the initiative as it steered students away from traditional fund-raising events that centred on junk food,” Megan said. And the health push extended past the school gates with fun run health partner Bupa dishing out free advice. Each student household was invited to participate in the ‘Bupa Family Challenge’ which aimed to help teach families to adopt life-long healthy habits.

Super Hayley stands out bilities- which is exactly what Hayley does every day, according to step-mum, Alyce Pearson. “Hayley is always helping her teachers with whatever they need, she volunteers and gives out sandwiches and fruit in the brunch club, she plays ukulele at the school and is also in the choir,” Alyce said. “She is mature, responsible, confident and very friendly, and we are so proud of her.” However, this isn’t the first time Cranbourne West Primary School has put Hayley forward for an award. “Hayley won the Victorian
Holt Community Spirit and Leadership award last year,” Alyce said. Matthew Hitchings from Cranbourne Good Guys said he was proud to recognise and celebrate Australia’s super kids within the local community. “The Super Kid Awards program honours kids and the super hero qualities that they have used to benefit their peers and local community,” Matthew said. A Super School Award is also up for grabs, the winner will receive $10,000 to develop a specialist program focusing on education and well-being.

A simpler offering of cheeses, charcuterie and desserts are available Tuesday and Wednesday. The cellar door is, as always, open for wine tasting seven days. It is manned by owner Kirsten Hardiker and front of house manager Karine Saille. Visitors can sample Cannibal Creek Vineyards estate fine table wines at the handmade five metre Jarrah Bar. Alternatively, settle in at a table and enjoy the wines matched with beautiful French cuisine prepared by our chef Philippe Desrettes. The purpose-built cellar door caters to diners but visitors can also cosy up by the open fireplace or relax out on the sunny deck. Gifts and local produce are on offer including a range of outstanding Gippsland cheeses. Cannibal Creek wines are grown and made on site and have been widely recognised for their quality by some of the leading wine reviewers and throughout the wine show circuit. DR LOUIS Loizou isn’t vain but he sure knows about veins. Phlebologist Dr Loizou has been running Vein Solutions in Narre Warren for the past 15 years and has been treating all types of vein abnormalities for more than two decades. “I provide treatment for abnormal leg veins of all types from spiderveins to varicose veins and leg ulcers,” Dr Loizou said. “I provide minimally invasive leg vein treatments requiring no hospitalisation, no general anaesthetic - virtually back to work immediately. “What makes Vein Solutions different is that we offer basically walk in and walk out procedures that are proven to be very effective negating the need for hospitalisation.” Vein Solution also offers a discount to pensioners and health care card holders. The focus of the business, according to Dr Loizou is leg veins that are abnormal including spider veins and varicose veins. “We provide a full comprehensive assessment which includes investigation with Duplex Scanning,” he said. Wig service for confidence FOR patients suffering from cancer, losing their hair during chemotherapy treatment can be a blow to self-esteem and confidence when they are already feeling unwell, scared and vulnerable. St John of God Berwick Hospital has launched a community wig service which can assist these patients during what is a very difficult time in their
lives. Since operating Day Oncology, which began at the Gibb Street hospital in 2013, the hospital has been very aware of the damaging effects of hair loss on the self esteem and emotions of their patients. The service has been carefully designed, offering the loan of a current selection of 50 wigs, a number which is set to grow as demand grows.
The loan service is available to any person in the local community who is suffering from cancer-related hair loss, and not just St John of God patients. Patients are able to loan the wig for as long as their treatment requires. This inclusive community approach is in keeping with the social outreach mission of St John of God Health Care, a not-for-profit
private health care provider. The development of the service has also been a community effort, with a team of volunteers having been trained to fit, style and maintain the wigs and many community groups fundraising to assist with the fit out of the service and purchase of the wigs and supplies. The service will be run by St John of God Berwick Hospital with the assistance of volunteers. “The community wig ser-
vice has been developed to service the community. Along with our new Day Oncology Centre at Kangan Drive which opened in March 2015, we are developing services which complement the expanding hospital and its increasing suite of specialties, to open next door at Kangan Drive in 2017. “We have spent a lot of time planning what we can offer to this community, which is rapidly growing, to ensure we meet
their needs not only today but also in the future,” explains Lisa Evans, director of Nursing. “The community wig service also gives us an opportunity to add another dimension to our Day Oncology for our patients, but also to reach out and assist all cancer patients in the region.” For appointments, call 8793 0550

Kiara’s on the ball By JARROD POTTER STUDENT-ATHLETES often get a bad rap in the American college system. The common complaints are they’re not interested in studying, they’re only at the school to play and only care about the athletic side of campus life. But one woman shattering those notions - and more - is Dandenong Rangers alumnus Kiara Phillips. Phillips, 21, from Narre Warren South, is the ultimate studentathlete; excelling in her academic and athletic life at Norfolk State University, in Virginia, USA. Her numbers don’t lie on either side of the student-athlete divide, especially for the just completed 2015/16 campus year. As a student she has a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) studying sociology - effectively a perfect year in American education standards. Add to that her on-court averages - 7.4 points and nearly two assists and a steal per game as a junior - and it’s clear she’s not just excellent with a basketball or pen in her hand, but also extremely well organised. “It hasn’t been easy for sure,” Phillips said. “I am a very organised person who keeps a daily calendar on my phone, in my hand and on my MacBook.
“I spend quality time with my other half Jonathan Wade a lot and we usually study together, but definitely staying organised and maintaining a high level of work ethic is on the top of my list to ensure I maintain a great GPA.” Shifting from Australian basketball to the college arena has been equally as challenging, but Phillips - a three-time national champion as a Dandenong junior - wants those tough tasks and difficult prospects. It makes her better after all that’s her number one aim, not the stats. “Most definitely, the style is very different,” Phillips said. “The college atmosphere there is no comparison and the school rivalry is impeccable. “I thrive in environments like that and it actually makes me play better and I would definitely tell anyone person that is looking to play at the college level and excel in the classroom it is an amazing experience that you will never forget. “Basketball is something I have played almost my entire life and I thank God for giving me the talents both on and off the court.” Her on-court highlight this season was nailing 21 points against Howard University to give Norfolk a 110-108 double over-time tri-
umph - which she dedicated to her team mate Amber Brown, who is currently battling illness. “It has been a very challenging season with Amber Brown, my former team mate, fighting for her life, a brand new coaching staff with 10 games left in the season to go, but I never lost faith,” Phillips said. Phillips wants to finish her college basketball on a strong note - same as her studies - achieving accolades and proving to everyone around her that she belongs in the top echelon on and off the court. “I want to walk away and prove to people that ever doubted me and my ability that I did it, I made it and made a huge difference,” Phillips said. “Going into my senior year I want to be MEAC player of the year, make all conference first team and just get the most out of the year with minimal injuries as possible. “I love my haters - that is why I am over here excelling at the highest level both on and off the floor. “It was probably the best decision I ever made honestly and I have zero regrets leaving Australia but the only thing is I wish my family was here too.” She wanted to thank her boyfriend Jonathan, her family, Monica Wright and God for always believing in her and helping her reach the place she is today.

Stars are aligning By DAVID NAGEL THE stars have aligned for the Doveton Football Netball Club with former Carlton ace Brendan Fevola set to light up the night sky for the Doves in a one-off cameo appearance at Robinson Oval. Local sporting fans are expected to flock to the Doves' spiritual home ground on Saturday 28 May, when the club celebrates its rich Indigenous heritage against traditional rivals Cranbourne. The two-time Coleman Medallist and three-time All-Australian will join his new team-mates in a specially designed guernsey (pictured), and will go head-to-head with Cranbourne goalkicking sensation Marc Holt. An already huge night for the Doves, and for the South East Football Netball League, just got a hell of a lot bigger - and it all happened by chance. “It’s funny how things work out isn’t it,” said new Doveton president Aaron Henwood. “One of our Doveton boys Ricky Hayes was at a wedding recently and he and Fev go way back to their school days. They started talking and Ricky said ‘You should have a game with us’. Fev got out his phone and said ‘if you want me I can play on May 28’ and it’s all sort of gone on from there.” Fevola, who kicked 623 goals in his 204-game AFL career, has continued his domination of opposition full-
backs breaking game-records at Yarrawonga (16 goals) and New Norfolk (18 goals) along the way. He currently plays for Deer Park in the Western Region Football League, kicking 10 goals for his new club on the weekend. This is Doveton’s second recruiting coup for the season; with former Melbourne star Aaron Davey signing on as a playing assistant-coach late last year. Henwood, who told the News of Fevola’s signing just minutes before the Doves ran out for their round two engagement against Narre Warren on Saturday, said his club was well prepared for one of the biggest nights in local football. “As it’s turned out we had a full dress rehearsal on Good Friday against Hampton Park,” he said. “We had 2000 people come through the gate that day but we do expect this to be bigger. It’s great for the club and great for the league to have special occasions like this.” Henwood had no doubt the lighting of Robinson Oval would be more than adequate for the contest. “There’s another coincidence, we just had the lights re-aimed about three weeks ago and that’s made a huge difference,” he said. “Just like we did against Hampton Park the whole club will put its best foot forward and try to put on the best show possible.” Henwood put the club’s recent run
Former Carlton star Brendan Fevola will wear this specially designed Indigenous Round jumper for his Doveton debut on Saturday 28 May. 153006 Picture: DIGITALLY ENHANCED of good luck down to a lot of hard work, and said the merging of the football and netball clubs at Doveton had proved a huge success. “I’ve done some work in the background but I just thought it was time to stand up and continue on the good work of people like Shane (Viney) and
Shannon (Henwood) from the last few years,” Henwood said. “As people at other clubs would know, it’s not an easy job, and I just really want to finish off their good work.” And the merging of the two clubs? “That’s working really well,” he
said. “Amanda Dean is president of the netball club and we’re working closely together to make both clubs stronger.” Hard work and a little bit of luck along the way - the stars are aligning for the Doveton Football Netball Club.

600th game for the ump By JARROD POTTER UMPIRING is in the blood for Cranbourne’s Terry Edwards. There’s no other way to describe a man who will pick up the whistle rain, hail or shine to get out and get onto the field to give a fair contest to South East Juniors (SEJ) footballers across the league. Throughout the years - for 36 years behind the whistle - Edwards umpired his 600th junior football match, in Cranbourne’s 145-point win over Narre South in Premier 1 competition. He’s umpired at the higher levels in senior leagues around the state, but he’s loved returning to the juniors ranks and helping put on SEJ (formerly DDJFL) matches since the late 1980s. Edwards puts his life in officiating - with his total umpired games well over 1000 - down to staying fit and interested in sport while keeping young as the spry 66-year-old loves
running the middle of muddy grounds around the south east suburbs every winter. “Just kept me interested in the game I love - when I was a youngster that’s all we knew,” Edwards said. “Football and cricket took up most of my leisure time - we played at school on the weekends and every opportunity we could do it. “It’s a fitness thing too - always been mad on fitness and dabbled in triathlons and run a half-marathon, but I venture on up Casey RACE nearly every weekday - because I’m retired - and used to do a group fitness session up there.” It’s not just the winter scene that tempts his umpiring instincts, Edwards has also been a mainstay of the Dandenong District Cricket Umpires Association (DDCUA) and umpired countless DDCA Turf 1 matches and finals throughout his years.
“Mainly keeping the base of fitness and that’s why I’ve been able to keep umpiring - cricket is more concentration and more of the mental game, but just the love of that game too,” Edwards said. Throughout the years, the grand finals have captivated Edwards the most, especially back when they were mostly held at Frawley Road in Hallam as the crowds flocked in to watch the best DDJFL kids battle it out. “Every grand final that I’ve done,” Edwards said. “I can remember when I was with the South East Juniors and it the one umpire system back then, and we’d draw massive crowds during the finals at Frawley Road Hallam ... those were a real highlight.” Edwards wanted to thank his family - wife Denise and children Sarah and Ty - former umpiring advisors and the sporting community for their support of his umpiring over the years.
By JARROD POTTER VFL WOMEN’S - ROUND 3 LIFE in the VFL did not get easier this week for Cranbourne. The highlight of the day by far was the unfurling of the 2015 VWFL Division 1 premiership flag, but from there on there wasn’t much worth committing to memory. The hosts were pumped at Casey Fields 0.3(3) to 17.10(112) by premiership contenders Melbourne Uni yet another difficult outing for Cranbourne’s newly established
VFL Women’s team. Scoreless through the first half - despite a number of great forward entries and solid attack on the ball - the gulf between the newcomers and the well-established Mugars’ squad proved too much in the end. Cranbourne could only repel so many entries by the scholars, led by former team-mate of many Eagles - Ellie Blackburn. The Endeavour Hills football wunderkind showed why she’s been in the AFL mix for the last four seasons, booting a goal and thumping the ball in
for countless forward entries. Corrine Cullis was named in the best, a fitting result for her 100th clash, while Emily Wallace, Alice Barfoot and Breann Moody were also the better performers. VFL Women’s has a bye this weekend on account of Anzac Day, with Cranbourne returning to the field on Sunday 1 May. Once again the fixture has thrown Cranbourne another Herculean challenge; this time away against last year’s grand finalist Diamond Creek.

Scorpions off to a real flyer By JARROD POTTER VFL ROUND 2 TWO from two, Casey Scorpions have started the VFL season with a bang after smashing apart Collingwood in a fourth-term maelstrom. It wasn’t just their AFL affiliate that flogged the Magpies on Sunday, as Casey started the day with a 66-point canter past the beleaguered black-and-white brigade. Collingwood’s woes started at three-quarter-time as all initiative the hosts had mustered simply evaporated under Casey’s pressure. From 15 up to three down at the last change, the true battery began in the last as Casey all but doubled its tally in a whirlwind final term at the Holden Centre. It started with Neerim Neerim South prospect Kody Wilson, finding it inside-50 and jagging an incredible loose ball goal, before the floodgates truly opened. All Scorpions fans will have celebrated Christian Petracca’s pair of
lead-out marking efforts, resulting in two textbook goals, but the Melbourne fans would’ve cheered twice as hard as their number-two draft pick builds towards peak fitness and an imminent AFL debut. With 13 players lining up to boot Collingwood into submission - the best haul went to emerging forward/ utility Sam Weiderman (three goals) the thumping nine-goals-five term left no doubts about Casey’s finals credentials. Casey’s prime movers are all in line for an AFL call up as Dean Terlich amassed a whopping 41 touches alongside Vic Michie (40), Jack Grimes (34) and Petracca (34) as the Melbourne-depth has started to truly pay off down at Casey Fields. Of the Casey charges, Paul Pattison and Declan Keilty showed the Gippsland Power pathway to Casey remains strong. Owed to its whopping 300 per cent, two-win start to 2016, Casey finds itself on top of the VFL ladder, closely shadowed by fellow unbeaten sides
Werribee and Box Hill. Casey will be under lights once again on Saturday night, hosting Williamstown at Casey Fields from 7pm.

Cavaliers slay the Dragons Unbeaten Amstel ready for finals By JARROD POTTER BIG V - ROUND 4 SLAYING Dragons on home court, the Casey Cavaliers made light work of the visiting Camberwell. The Cavaliers’ juggernaut didn’t need to get out of second gear against Camberwell in the 77-56 triumph on Saturday night. Cavs’ coach Stewart Baird had plenty of opportunities to test his bench and rotate the entire roster through in the 21-point triumph. Resting all of his starters, trying new combinations - Baird was like a kid in a candy store circulating his team through the basketball barrage. Starting from the second term - putting Camberwell to the sword with a 27-point quarter - Casey was able to coast to victory from there as Matt Witherden (22 points, 17 rebounds) continued his opportune run of form alongside James Deneefe (11 points) and Dean Johnson (five points, 11 rebounds). “The first half was really pleasing - more so for the fact that I started to see at both ends of the floor the stuff we’ve been working on and I’ve been harping on, really starting to show through. “Defensive talk and rotations were fantastic and offensive structures were really good - everyone we put in the game stayed with it and it all it worked well.” Baird praised his playingassistant coach Witherden, who has stepped up in Brent Hobba’s absence ... but couldn’t let him go a game with nothing but praise. “Like a new man out there - the irony is he’s only playing the minutes he’s playing because Hobba is injured,” Baird
Casey's Ben Louis flies for a rebound against a Camberwell Picture: JARROD POTTER opponent. 152969 said. “We didn’t expect him to be playing more than 15 or 20 but he’s up and about and showing that he’s still got plenty of game left. “Obviously the year off he had last year - while masquerading as a player - has helped him out.” Such is Casey’s roster strength and ability to close out games early this season that only five 30 minute games have been recorded for the playing group in 2016’s first five matches. It makes for an impressive opening month of the season as Casey has shone against the regular faces of the league. “I’m really happy - the only loss was that Melton game and they were stacked with NBL players and haven’t won a game since,” Baird said. “Good solid win last week, solid win tonight, scratched out a win against Melbourne Uni and had
a great win to open up down at Latrobe, so first month of the season I think we’re in a pretty good place.” In the biggest clash of the round - Casey and Shepparton will lock horns on Sunday afternoon, as one of the newest, but most heated, rivalries in Big V enters its next chapter. The unbeaten start for Casey’s women was smashed apart by Blackburn in a 58-73 defeat. The Cavaliers’ efforts fell apart in the last term as the Vikings charged through 22-10 to put the match beyond question, after a gutsy fight-back from the hosts to knock in 24 points in the third. Ruchelle Mccracken (13 points, 13 rebounds) continued her elite start to 2016 alongside Tarryn Wilkin (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Jess Szalek (seven points, eight rebounds). Casey’s women are off to Wodonga to battle the North East.
AMSTEL GOLF AMSTEL had the short trip out to Chirnside Park and were quietly confident of a win despite some close games against long-time rivals Melbourne Airport. Nathan Crossley made his first appearance for Amstel this year and some early nerves proved costly. Crozzer fell a few holes behind early and despite getting back to square at one stage eventually lost 2 and 1. This wasn’t the only match that was a close hard fought contest and through 12 holes, most matches were still in the balance. Kirk Tuati was keen to make amends for last week’s loss and with his trusty caddy Paul Stanley on the bag, Special K was in control of his match against the talented Jordan Wilmont and closed it out 3 and 1. Kirk's good buddy Jayson Tepokua is enjoying a return to form and he matched that 3 and 1 score line to have Amstel lead 2 matches to 1. All the remaining matches were neck and neck although Lee James, who is one of four unbeaten Amstel players this year, was struggling finding himself four down through 14 against Melbourne Airport Captain Arthur Vrahnas. The other unbeaten players were hell-bent on keeping their records intact, Jack Hitchcock outlasted the diminutive Chris Morris 2 and 1, Captain Brett Greenough fought an unco-operative putter to prevail 1 up, while Leigh Bailey kept his brilliant form going for a 2 up win. This left Lee James out on the course quietly mounting a comeback in the number two position. James won the 13th and 14th holes, halved 15 before winning 16 and 17 to head up the last all square. A wayward drive left James deep in the trees but a miraculous punch shot from 140 metres out rolled up and onto the green, leaving the pressure fairly on the shoulders of the Melbourne Airport skipper. Vrahnas’ dumped his second shot in the greenside bunker and copped a horrible lie, his third was bladed across the green and barely stayed in bounds. Vrahnas needed something special and playing his fourth from another abysmal lie, he almost pulled off the impossible, his chip shot hitting the pin but refusing to drop before settling five feet away above the pin. James then attempted to lag his putt close for the win but a touch of adrenaline kicked in and he left himself a four foot knee trembler back up the hill. Vrahnas however wasn’t able to convert his bogey and a conceded par saw James mount a remarkable comeback, winning five of the last six holes to
“Nice short game Chris.” Jack Hitchcock, left, outlasted the diminutive Chris Morris 2 and 1 in the weekend’s round of pennant golf. Picture: CONTRIBUTED salute 1 up. Amstel recorded a 6/1 victory that was much closer than the scoreline suggested. Amstel remain unbeaten atop the Division 6 ladder, however play Bacchus Marsh at their own course next week in the most difficult assignment so far. If you then throw Berwick Montuna into the mix, who Amstel meet in the penultimate round, the job is well and truly ahead of us to maintain our position and make the final. Special thanks to the members who made the effort to come and support and/or caddy on Sunday. It’s fantastic to see you there and really gives the team a boost!

Doves digging deep By DAVID NAGEL WHEN backed into a corner a victim has two options, he can lie down and die, or, he can fight on regardless of the odds. Doveton had that choice at the nine-minute mark of the final term in its South East Football Netball League clash at Narre Warren on Saturday. A 65-metre bomb from Magpies debutant Darren Sheen was followed a minute later by a Trent Cody conversion, the Magpies 14 points up, wind-assisted, and seemingly headed for victory. The Doves were in trouble. But they released the shackles, starting breaking lines and looked every inch a legitimate finals contender, producing 20-minutes of high-quality football to score a thrilling one-point victory. “We’re still learning, we’re still a work in progress, and through my experience ball movement is probably the last thing to come,” a relieved Doveton coach Stephen O’Brien said after the match. “We proved again today that we’re a pretty hard side to score against. We just had to get our ball movement right and we did that in the last 10 minutes, our ball movement probably got us over the line in the end.” Mitch Pierce finished with three for the Doves, Shannon Henwood and Sam Raru two each, while the ruckwork of Russell Gabriel was a standout feature of the day. Matt Jameson, Jarrad Boumann and hardat-it midfielder Sam Raru were also impressive, while the cleverness of Aaron Davey and Michael Henry should not be underestimated in the dying stages. Sheen made the most of limited opportunities to kick six for the Magpies, while young big-men Jordyn Flannery and Jake Richardson showed promising signs. Michael Milivojevic and the returning Josh Tonna were also impressive for the vanquished. Cranbourne youngster Zac Roscoe was the shining light in Cranbourne’s eight-point victory over Pakenham at Casey Fields on Sunday. ing a game-high five goals for the afternoon. The Eagles kicked out to a 29-point lead in the second quarter and held on comfortably, the Lions kicking two late goals to narrow the margin. Marc Holt kicked four; Glenn Osborne was terrific down back, while Russell Lehman had a heap of it for the Lions. Champion Beaconsfield ruckman Scott Meyer was at his dominant best in the Eagles five-goal vic-
tory over Officer at Starling Road. Meyer was superb in the ruck, and then played a kick behind the play to repel any Officer advances. Beau Dowler kicked three for the winners, with Ilan Osman and impressive youngster Callum Porter kicking two each for the Kangaroos. Tooradin scored its first win for the season after overcoming a committed Hampton Park by 58 points at Westernport Oval. The Seagulls struggles to break
free early, but late first-quarter goals and a flurry at the start of the second opened up a match-winning lead. Jake O’Donnell kicked all three of his goals in the first half, Kyle Van Der Pluym kicked four, while Michael Hobbs and Josh Muling were impressive through the midfield. Luke O’Brien slotted three for the Redbacks, who had Jackson Philpin, Josh Craig and Kane White in terrific form down back. Berwick had the bye.

Seagulls and Magpies impress By DAVID NAGEL PERRENIAL cellar-dweller Tooradin has emerged as a serious threat to Narre Warren’s dreams of back-to-back titles after another super-impressive performance on the weekend. The Seagulls looked to have a really tough start to their season, but a win over Pakenham and a 63-37 win over Hampton Park on Saturday have them locked in as legitimate contenders. Pakenham coach Kerry Twyford, who saw the damage the Seagulls can do first hand in round one, said Kelly Haynes’ girls are the real deal. “I thought it was funny after round one that everyone was writing us off, but I just thought ‘Wait until you play them,” Twyford said of Tooradin. Tooradin took control against the Redbacks with an 18-9 first quarter, then totally dominated the third term -scoring 22 goals to four! The Seagulls dominated all over the court,
with Alex Duff and Haynes unstoppable under the ring while Shona Wells, Emma Walker and Holly Gillespie gave plenty of drive through the midcourt. And Ebony Dolan and Jess Maher did what they do best -stopping the opposition from scoring. The return of Kim Coulson and Sara Drain was about the only the highlight of the day for the Redbacks. Twyford’s Pakenham side showed they’re keen to stay in touch with the top sides with a very resilient 45-37 victory over Cranbourne. The Lions trailed by six at half time but continued to take the game on to run away with the four points, scoring 15 goals to five in the final term. “We really struggled to start with, not taking advantage of our intercepts and handing the ball back far too easily, but I was really happy with our second half,” Twyford said. Co-captain Meaghan Musgrave was best for the Lions while Tegan Stahl and Mel Perrins worked together nicely in the first half for the Eagles.
Narre Warren has given Doveton the ultimate reality check with a 50-31 triumph at Fox Road. Chloe Phillips dominated the scoring in the first half for the Magpies, with Tayla Shannon taking on the bulk of the scoring duties when Phillips left the court in the second quarter. Shannon scored 20 of the Magpies 27 goals in the second half, with Jemma Osborne proving a more than able back-up, with some sharp-shooting a feature of her play. Beaconsfield made it a perfect two-fromtwo with a 42-31 victory over ROC at Starling Road. The Eagles did most of their damage in the first half, leading 23-11, with Bianca Sanzaro in fine touch under the ring. Kaela Hughes was terrific for the Eagles through the midcourt, but the Kangaroos did tighten things up after half time. Ash Barnett, Sophie Tracey and Gemma Stacey had great second halves for the Roos, who outscored their opponents 20-19 to finish strongly. Berwick had the bye.

Understated aggression By EWAN KENNEDY THE Peugeot 308 GTi isn’t just a dress up kit added on the assembly line, its engineering was done by Peugeot Sport.
This hot French GTi is offered in two specifications: the Peugeot 308 GTi 250 has a recommended retail price of $44,990, the 308 GTi 270 is sold at $49,990. The 250 and 270 refer to the output of the engines in horsepower. Our test car was the GTi 250 and came without the added-cost extras that crop up in a lot of our test vehicles. The Peugeot is powered by a responsive turbo-petrol engine that drives through well-controlled front wheels, and chassis dynamics that sit with the best of them. The French designers have given the 308 GTi a shape that’s stylish, but certainly not overdone. The sports grille and revised side skirts look good. The rear features a gloss-black section incorporating twin exhaust pipes that are finished in chrome. These Peugeot GTi models are lower by 11 mm than the standard 308 and have wider tracks - 1570 mm at the front and 1554 mm at the rear. The 250 has 225/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres on Diamant alloy wheels. The GTi 270 sits on 19-inch Carbone light-
weight alloy wheels with wider, lowerprofile Michelin Super Sport 235/35 R19 tyres. Interior trim is in a combination of mock leather, and alcantara in dark grey with red stitching on the seats and door trim. The gear knob and steering wheel also get stitching highlights. Both models use the same 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, but in two different states of tune. The numbers 250 and 270 in the GTi’s title refer to the output of the engines in horsepower. Metric power is rated at 184 and 200 kW. Torque is more important than power in real life driving and is a strong feature of this powerplant; both versions of the engine develop peak torque of 330 Nm from just 1900 rpm. In other words top torque is on hand virtually all the time. The 250 engine has a zero to 100 km/h acceleration time of 6.2 seconds, the 270 stops the timer at 6.0. Peugeot GTi only comes with a sixspeed manual gearbox. The GTi 270 uses of a Torsen limited-slip differential and its Electronic Stability Program puts more emphasis on driver skill by cutting in later. The ESP system can be fully disconnected, though this is only recommended for track days. Peugeot’s 9.7-inch touchscreen

MODEL RANGE 308 GTi 250 1.6-litre turbo-petrol fivedoor hatch: $44,990 (manual) 308 GTi 270 1.6-litre turbo-petrol fivedoor hatch: $49,990 (manual)
gets a Redline finish in a red and black theme. Satellite navigation is standard, there’s 6.9Gb Jukebox for music storage, AM/FM radio and a CD player. Two USB ports and Bluetooth connectivity complete the package. Sound quality is good and we found the radio picking up signals at greater distances than we often experience in other cars. However the latter isn’t exactly a
scientific back-to-back test and audio input is obviously influenced by atmospheric conditions. The front seats are a Peugeot Sport design and support nicely, though not to the extent of making ingress and egress a chore. They appear to be slightly bulkier in their backrest design and therefore reduce rear-seat knee room. I’m a six-footer and anyone of the same height would find barely enough knee room behind me unless I was willing to give up a notch or three on my seat. All seat adjustments are manual, something I’m happy with in a sports model as cutting a few kilos by leaving out electric motors is always nice.
I enjoy the tiny low-set steering wheel that you look over the top of, but find Peugeot’s description of this as being a ‘head-up display’ a bit imaginative. A feature I love is that the speedo and tacho needles rotate in opposite directions. Some people find this irritating - but they fail to see the challenge is to get the tips of the two needles as close to one another as possible. Having said that, we never did achieve the ultimate needle position of 250 km/h at 6500 rpm! Engine response is very good for a high-performance turbo engine, the small capacity probably helps here. The ability to get out and around slower cars quickly and safely is always welcome. Pressing the Sport button on the centre console switches the instrument display from white to an angry red, it shows additional information on the central read-out (power, torque, boost, lateral and longitudinal acceleration). Even better, using Sport mode enhances the engine’s throaty growl. A little more volume would be appreciated, though. Steering is fast, intuitive and predictable and the ability of this hot French machine to cling on in bends and change direction quickly when asked to do really pleases those who enjoy driving.
