Export plan:
Food, drink fuels hope By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A new export program aims to open up multimillion dollar opportunities to take Geelong food and beverage products to the world. Ship to Shed was specifically developed for local businesses by CVEN, a team of international trade specialists with more than 30 years’ experience. CVEN co-director Kerry-Anne Jones said the program would give Geelong exporters a major boost. Ms Jones said the program was the first to receive collaboration from 11 Greater Geelong councils, business and tourism associations. Melbourne based CVEN recently opened a Geelong office to run Ship to Shed, she said. “CVEN’s track record includes achieving over $6 million in sales to over 30 countries for clients over the past four years, Ms Jones said. “We aim to emulate these successes for more businesses based in the Greater Geelong region. Anzac Day 2016
In Brief
Hall lights up for Anzacs Geelong’s City Hall will begin lighting up with World War I imagery from 3.30am on Monday as the region prepares to commemorate Anzac Day. The moving-light projections would continue nightly all week as Geelong marked the conclusion of the Anzac Centenary year, a City Hall spokesperson said. The projections would serve as a lead-up to Geelong’s annual pre-dawn service in Johnstone Park, beside City Hall. The council debuted the projections last year as part of a program of lighting up central Geelong to attract visitors and celebrate annual events. This year’s Anzac projections would focus on the Word War I effort on the Western Front, said City of Greater Geelong General Manager of Investment
and Attraction Brett Luxford. “Along with the Anzac ceremonies that will be held across the municipality, the City Hall projections are an essential part of honouring those who served our country,” he said. “Diary entries from soldiers and nurses add a very touching narration to the images and the soundtrack is very evocative. “The projections include historic imagery from 1915 and 1916, as well as animations created by artist Matt Bonner.” Mr Bonner said working with the historic subject matter was “really eye-opening”. “It’s hard to fully comprehend what the men and women who served our country really went through. “I hope the work I have created helps people
Death unsuspicious
catch a glimpse of this hard chapter in our history,” he said. The content was designed to move people with human stories but was not graphically violent, Mr Bonner said. Families with children would be able to view the show reel, “hopefully” before a respectful discussion about the tragedy of the Western Front, he said. The projections will run on a constant loop of about 15 minutes from 6pm to 11pm until 1 March. Other Anzac Day events in Geelong will include Torquay’s annual dawn service at Point Danger, which traditionally draws the region’s largest attendance. More information on local services is available on council websites.

Rental rates Geelong offers increasingly affordable rent for minimum-wage couples but “other lowincome households” are battling, according to a new report. The Anglicare Rental Affordability Snapshot listed 544 affordable homes for the couples but only 162 for counterparts on income support, such as single age pensioners in shared accommodation.
Discharges penalty Illegal discharges of a “red liquid” has cost a Geelong fertiliser company $15,000 in fines, according to Victoria’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). A bund caught one of the flows from Corio’s Ameropa Australia site but the first possibly reached Corio Bay, the EPA said.
Burns cut New burn-off rules have led to a “dramatic drop” in the number of fires escaping from properties around Geelong, according to City Hall. The requirement to obtain a permit to burn in the open air or use an incinerator meant council officers had to inspect properties to sign off on approval, said City of Greater Geelong chief Kevin Spiller.
‘Lifers’ named Geelong welfare agency Bethany has added 13 individuals to its roll of life members for their “outstanding contribution”. The agency used the launch of its 19th annual Bethany Arthouse Film Festival to name the life members as June Bennett, Barbara Donovan, Jan Dooley, Brian Edward, Marilyn Funston, Jenny Heath, Pauline Hyland, Ian Knox, Sarah Leach, Vaughan Lamb, Gerard Mullaly, Tibby Peterson and Kas Szakiel

HAPPY CAMPER: Olivia Everingham will be among students from Geelong who are sleeping out at Camp Gallipoli.
Camp-out to commemorate Anzacs North Geelong Secondary College students are preparing swags and sleeping bags to participate in the nation’s largest sleepover to commemorate the nation’s fallen diggers. They will join thousands of other Victorian secondary students at Camp Gallipoli in Melbourne on Sunday night ahead of Monday’s Anzac Day commemorations. “I’m really looking forward to Camp Gallipoli, I think it will be a really interesting event,” said North Geelong student Olivia Everingham, 16. “I hope I learn more about what it was like during WWI while having a fun time with my friends.
“I think it’s really important to honour the fallen soldiers who put their lives on the line to help our country and their families who lost loved ones.” Organisers said the not-for-profit camp at Melbourne Showgrounds would include remembrance activities and entertainment, including a performance by Geelong musician Taylor Henderson. Other Camp Galipoli events would be held simultaneously in Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Sydney, they said. The organisers expected more than 30,000 students from over 200 schools to attend the camps.
Geelong’s water storages have continued falling more than a week after authorities turned on a pump to bring top-up supplies from Melbourne. Barwon Water measured the storages at 33.2 per cent capacity on Wednesday, down almost 1 per cent on the previous week.
School boost A $2.5 million funding injection will help upgrade ageing buildings at a Geelong school for children with special needs, Lara MP John Eren has announced. The improvements will give students at Nelson Park School “the modern classrooms and spaces they need to learn”, Mr Eren said.

Celebrated Australian artist Arthur Streeton is renowned for his depictions of the western district, the subject of an exhibition at Geelong Gallery until mid-June. However, less is known of his time spent on the front line during WWI. Born at Mt Duneed, Streeton was in London when war broke out and at the age of 48 was appointed as an official war artist in May 1918, sent to France and attached to the 2nd Division AIF. Geelong Gallery director Geoffrey Edwards said Streeton managed to complete a full walk-through of the Somme battlefields and some 60 to 70 kilometres of what was the front line in 1916-17 “It is gorgeous countryside now as it was before the bombing, which turned it into a pit of lunar landscapes,” Mr Edwards said. Known as a glorious impressionist landscape painter, Streeton chooses to work to his strengths on the battlefields, depicting the wider scenes and panoramas. “You do see some action, such as bombed out machinery and emplacements, but you are really looking at the extraordinary landscape and its charred ruins,” Mr Edwards said. “Streeton captured the panorama of the battlefield rather than the battles themselves and you see these great raking dark shadows raking across the scene,” Mr Edwards said. “This has been interpreted that Streeton UNIFORM: A studio portrait was pointing towards of Arthur Streeton. other significant world events, such as the Great Depression just around the corner.” Land of the Golden Fleece - Arthur Streeton in the Western District is a major exhibition at the Geelong Gallery until 13 June.

Double Take This week’s video apology by actor Johnny Depp and wife Amber Heard for breaking Australian quarantine laws quickly attracted all the wrong attention, including that of Geelong comic Kate McLennan (pictured). She and partner-in-cooking crime Kate McCartney won the prize for parody with an apology that their online comedy, The Katering Show, remained unavailable to international viewers. “The Katering Show is a wonderful cooking show, with an island bench, a treasure trove of unique food and knives and make up,” they deadpanned. “It has to be protected. “The Katering Show is not free - it is very expensive… we need money to make it… I am poor,” said McCartney. “I am also very poor,” added McLennan. Actually, the pair admitted their show was a massive worldwide hit on You Tube - it’s just that Google makes more from it than they do. The State Government this week announced a “flying squad of independent anti-bullying specialists and experts will be deployed to Victoria’s hospitals” as part of a crackdown on bullying and harassment in the health system. “Bullying and harassment have no place in Victoria’s health system and under the Government’s tough new bullying and harassment strategy, hospitals and agencies will be held to account to ensure it is stamped out,” thundered the media release. Which begged the question: will the government-appointed hospital boards be sacked for
not doing enough about bullying? After all, it was apparently enough to sack Geelong’s council. Meanwhile, Bellarine MP Lisa Neville might have an opportunity to spread security cameras from St Kilda’s penguin colony to her own constituents. Indy readers will be aware that last week she was criticised for granting $250,000 for CCTV to watch over her feathered friends while calls to fund cameras for the security of her own species at Drysdale went unanswered. Well this week her State Government announced grants of up to $250,000 for security infrastructure including CCTV “to improve community safety” - human community safety, that is. Double Take is confident Ms Neville will vigorously support any renewed Drysdale bid for CCTV funding under the new grants program. Especially if the bid incorporates penguins. Speaking of security issues, veteran Geelong journo and muso Noel Murphy is developing his own household Neighbourhood Watch. First Murph discovered a smashed passengerside window on his car, then his focused eye on crime found a would-be burglar loitering around his Newtown garage. “He started thumping a punching bag when he spotted me. Told me he was at private training,” Murph recounted last week. “I told him I’d private train him in the honker if he didn’t rack off.” Luckily for both, the reprobate fled. Then this week Murph had another at-home incident when he disturbed a would-be burglar picking his back door lock after feeding the family dog to keep it quiet. Another angry outburst and the crim was on his way. Beware of the dog? Best beware of the Murph.

Changes to your water supply Barwon Water is calling on back-up water sources, the Melbourne to Geelong pipeline and Barwon Downs borefield, in response to prolonged dry conditions. Barwon Water will access the Victorian water grid via the 59-kilometre Melbourne to Geelong pipeline from the beginning of April. The Barwon Downs borefield, a critical source previously used to supplement supplies in drought conditions, is also being readied for operation.
Barwon Water customers will not pay extra for these water sources; prices are locked in until June, 2018. Some customers may notice a change in the taste of their water when the sources are changed. All water supplied will remain safe to drink and is compliant with Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. For more information, please telephone 1300 656 007 or visit www.barwonwater.vic.gov.au. ALP fears Lyons, says party elder By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
TRADING UP: Otway Pork’s Ian Farran with CVEN’s Kerry-Anne Jones.
Plan to expand food, drink exports From page 1 “The potential for Geelong’s food and beverage growers and manufacturers to secure new markets overseas motivated us to go to the Federal Government with a project plan to provide these businesses with the tools they need to make it happen. We are not interested in one-off orders; we focus on sustainable, long-term, mutually beneficial export relationships.” Ms Jones said export assistance initiatives often focussed on “jumping on a plane” to a potential market, meeting buyers, then heading home to wait for a big order that often never arrived. “Before working with us one of our clients agreed to participate in an export delegation but achieved no sales and learnt nothing. “No one assisted him with his pricing, logistics or documentation and the exercise put him $6000 out of pocket. This is the exact opposite of what
Shed to Ship is all about.” Ms Jones said Shed to Ship aimed to build skills, knowledge and confidence in exporting, develop practical customised strategies, establish networks and maximise access to assistance. Federal small exporters grants allowed the program to be offered at rates about 85 per cent less than commercial fees, she said. G21 Regional Alliance head Elaine Carbines backed Shed to Ship as an opportunity for local food and beverage producers. “It’s high time we saw a program like Shed to Ship become available to our region to assist these businesses to get their products into international markets and effectively grow the economic pie for the whole region,” she said. Prospective exporters can contact program facilitator Lena Neill on lena@cven.com.au or 0426 984 394.
Labor is running scared of Darryn Lyons standing for Corio at the federal election, according to one of the party’s former long-time Geelong MPs. Peter Loney said Geelong’s deposed mayor could leave Labor incumbent Richard Marles vulnerable if Mr Lyons ran as an independent. Mr Loney told the Denis Scanlan Front Page program on 94.7FM The Pulse that the ALP feared a Lyons campaign. “If it does happen Marles mightn’t win,” he said. Mr Loney, who held the state seat of Lara for Labor from 1992 to 2006, was unsure on The Pulse whether last week’s sacking of the council would affect Mr Lyons’ chance of winning Corio. “We are still to see how much this will hurt Darryn Lyons in a political sense. “Whether he could draw 10 to 12 per cent in a federal election, that would be the figure you would be looking at. “If Richard Marles’ primary vote is sitting at 36 per cent, that would make him vulnerable. At 36 per cent primary, any member is vulnerable. “The Liberals will run a candidate and Darryn Lyons would run as an independent. That has been the local political fear.” The Liberals have accused the Andrews Government of sacking Geelong’s council to smear Mr Lyons ahead of his anticipated run for Corio. Mr Lyons was the only individual identified in a report to government recommending the council’s dismissal, largely over bullying complaints. A spokesperson said Mr Lyons was on holiday with fiancee Elissa Friday. He would consider his future over the next few months, the spokesperson said. Mr Lyons last week hinted on a Sky News pro-
Peter Loney Darryn Lyons gram that he could stand for higher office, citing a lack of federal funding commitments for the safe seat of Corio during recent federal elections. The ALP has polled Corio at least twice to gauge support for Mr Lyons. ALP spokesmen have said their polling indicated he would receive about 10 per cent of the vote. An Indy street poll early this month suggested 44 per cent of respondents would support him as an independent candidate. The Liberal party this week selected marketing manager Richard Lange to contest the seat against Mr Marles and Greens candidate Sarah Mansfield. A 2 July federal election is on the cards after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull received his double dissolution trigger when the Senate rejected his Australian Building and Construction Commission legislation. Liberal Peter Read managed a 5.7 per cent swing away from incumbent Richard Marles in the 2013 federal election, garnering 42.25 per cent on a two party preferred basis. Mr Marles was returned with 57.75 per cent of the vote.

A single administrator has replaced Geelong’s 12 councillors and mayor after the Andrews Government controversially sacked them last week over bullying allegations. Former academic and state departmental head Yehudi Blacher was sworn into his interim role at City Hall on Saturday. He will act as mayor and councillors until the Andrews Government appoints three permanent administrators to take his place until council elections in October 2017. “My first priority will be to offer every support to council staff,” Mr Blacher said. “I want to start the process of bringing confidence and stability back into the organisation while ensuring that the normal functions of council continue. “I’m grateful the City already has in place a very experienced CEO, Kelvin Spiller, with whom I intend to work to prepare the groundwork for the incoming administrators.” Mr Spiller said his leadership team and broad-
er organisation would “provide every assistance” to Mr Blacher during his work on council business and addressing the findings of a commission of inquiry into the bullying claims. “We’re keen to learn from the commission’s report, to use it as a valuable blueprint for improvement, and get on with the business of running an efficient and well-governed organisation, which the residents of the city should have. “And I’m proud to say that staff right across our organisation remain fully committed to doing the very best job they can to continue deliver quality services to our ratepayers.” The inquiry report identified only former mayor Darryn Lyons despite detailing alleged bullying incidents involving other councillors and City Hall staff. Mr Lyons accused the Labor State Government of sacking the entire council to tarnish his political reputation in case he ran against the party in one of the party’s local state or federal seats.

Star Search calls for young talents A talent quest that has uncovered some of Geelong’s greatest stars will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year. Musicians like pop singer Missy Higgins and international opera performer Cheryl Barker rose to prominence with victories at Star Search. The Rotary Club of Highton event for young performers has seen this year’s entries open with instrumental and vocalist categories. Torquay’s Noah Gray, 14, plans to test his talents against the cream of his local musical contemporaries in the vocal category. Noah, who is studying on a scholarship at The Geelong College, achieved A-plus marks in contemporary singing last year. “I was the only person in Geelong and surrounding areas to receive this grade for this level, so it was an achievement for me,” he said. “I am also Pegasus House music captain … so I help organise music events for my house and school. New ‘hub’ tackles community needs A $43.5 million project with 90 aged-care beds and 52 rental houses has been launched at Norlane. The Norlane Integrated Community Hub Project also includes a community hub and wellbeing centre with a café, a library, a men’s shed, a playground and a gym. The facilities would provide Norlane residents with a “vibrant community space” while also generating jobs, said Baptcare chief executive Graham Dangerfield. The project would create work for 50 in construction and 100 ongoing jobs, he said. “The Norlane development is about responding to the community’s need for affordable housing, social housing, aged care and employment generation.
“Baptcare wants to make sure that the most vulnerable in the community are not left behind and have access to the care and services that they desperately need.” Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said the project would deliver a range of services to the local community. “The project will deliver 90 residential aged care beds and 52 affordable rental houses accommodating up to 91 people, including purpose built housing for people with disabilities,” Ms Henderson said. “We want to expand the quality of affordable housing rental options for families, older people and people with disabilities. “This project already builds on $1 million for Diversitat’s Healthy Living Centre for Ageing in
Norlane and $225,000 to upgrade refuelling facilities at Lethbridge Airport already announced under the National Stronger Regions Fund.” Federal Regional Development Minister Fiona Nash said the Australian Government would invest $7.25 million in the Norlane project. “The National Stronger Regions Fund is providing up to $1 billion over five years to promote economic development in Australia’s regions,” Ms Nash said. “The Australian Government is committed to funding priority infrastructure projects in local communities across Australia.” Baptcare will contribute $36.26 million toward the project which it expects to be completed in the middle of 2019.

WHEELY FAST: Para athlete Richard Colman is chasing a spot at Rio with a new racing wheelchair.
Champion Geelong para-athlete Richard Colman had just finished his second training session for the day but was still happy to talk about one of his passions - grass roots sport. For an athlete who has reached such highs, Colman bubbles with enthusiasm for local clubs. The Paralympic Games and world championships gold medallist is about to head to Europe as he chases his dream of competing at Rio later this year. He has two races in Switzerland and one in London to achieve the qualifying time that eluded him during the Australian domestic season due to ill health. “The pressure is on,” Colman confessed. “It’s all down to that week in Europe, but that’s the kind of situation that can motivate you,” he said. The para coach for Athletics Victoria said that there was even more motivation in the quality of juniors coming through the para ranks as more schools and sporting clubs offer a wider variety of activities. “There’s great depth and fantastic juniors coming through in the para fields,” Colman said. “I’m always going to schools where students don’t know what is available for them. There is
one local girl who had no idea and is amazing now. “Getting them involved is the hardest bit, but in the last few years we have double the number of teams at primary school level.” Colman is an ambassador for the Thermoskin Community Sports Fund which makes grants of up to $1500 available to clubs and individuals. “The number of applications is growing as more clubs know about it. It’s open for all clubs, not just elite sports. “We have a great cross section of sports, like ice hockey, figure skating, lawn bowls, roller derby clubs, all applying. “A little bit of money can help a lot for a local club, whether it is to buy uniforms or improve the training for coaches. “If you improve the coaching and have more coaches, you always increase the participation, and that’s what it’s all about, getting involved.” Colman said sports participation made a big difference to young people’s confidence, health and outlook on life. The Thermoskin Community Sports Fund, now in its fourth year, is open for grant nominations until 1 May at thermoskin.com/communitysportsfund. Winners will be announced on 6 June.

Geelong’s new hospital is on track to admit patients in July this year. The key to the Waurn Ponds-based hospital was handed over from builder Brookfield Multiplex to Epworth HealthCare THIS WEEK. The $277 million, 262-bed, state-of-the-art hospital has been under construction since April 2014. The Epworth Geelong team will complete the fit-out in preparation for a mid-year opening. “There’s still a great deal of hard work in front of us but today’s milestone is truly momentous,” said the hospital’s chief executive officer, Damian Armour. “It’s not often that there is an opportunity to build a hospital from scratch as we have in Geelong and that has allowed us to design a highly functional building that we’re sure the commu-
nity will love. “I couldn’t be prouder of what has been achieved so far.” The new hospital is on track to admit its first patients in early July, opening with 172 private inpatient rooms, a purpose-designed emergency department, intensive care unit and state-of-theart theatre precinct. Diagnostic services will also be available, including medical imaging, cardiac diagnostic services and pathology. Brookfield Multipex’s Graham Cottam called working on the hospital “a most rewarding and positive project. “The Geelong trades community has delivered a world-class quality facility that everyone can be proud of.” 9 GEELONG INDY Friday, 22 April, 2016

Hurdles still high as land cost falls Geelong region land prices have fallen and are now the seventh most expensive in regional Australia despite the city’s median price of blocks rising to $200,000. Geelong was the fifth most expensive regional market in Australia in the previous quarter but median lot prices were $196,000, new figures reveal. Local land prices suffered an “alarming” jump in the middle of last year when they rose to a median of $204,000, the Indy reported in October. Two years ago the regional median was $179,000. The Indy reported last year that Geelong was the 19th most unaffordable property market out of 378 major international centres. Geelong ranked alongside the ex-urban area of

outer London for unaffordability in the 11th annual International Housing Affordability Survey. But the latest Housing Industry AssociationCoreLogic RP Data Residential Land Report shows “more evidence of severe supply constraints in the market for residential land”. The report said lot sales fell 1.6 per cent, while median lot prices increased 5.2 per cent across Australia in the December 2015 quarter. HIA senior economist Shane Garrett said conditions in the residential land market made it more difficult to deliver the new housing stock that Australia needed. “We need much greater emphasis on the delivery of new residential land supply involving better models for infrastructure delivery and a real sense of urgency in the planning process,” he said.
A rare glimpse of the wild and free The Australian painted snape, grey-tailed tattler and common bent-wing bat are among animals listed on a new register of threatened species in the Geelong region. State Wide Integrated Flora and Fauna Teams (SWIFFT) have added the animals and others to a comprehensive list of all known fauna considered threatened, near threatened or extinct in the Geelong area. The list exceeds 100 species including Ocean Grove’s swift parrot found and the Yarra pygmy perch, found in Waurn Ponds Creek. “This is an excellent resource we can use to broaden the community’s understanding of the animals we need to look out for and protect to maintain our biodiversity in the region,” said Geelong City Hall’s William Tieppo. The list covers birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and each animal’s con-
Students geared up for coastal care A group of year nine St Joseph’s College students have experienced the Surf Coast in all its glory as part of a new environmental education program. The 15 students swapped the classroom for hands-on conservation work with Great Ocean Road Coast Committee at White’s Beach, Torquay, as part of the college’s outdoor education program. Coast committee education coordinator Pete Crowcroft said the practical aspect of the environmental education programs allowed students to see how everyday action impacted the environment. “GORCC’s education programs highlight how

particular behaviours and activities can affect the coastal environment. “We talked about dune stability and erosion control methods, as students were able to see the environmental damage caused by illegal access and dune surfing at Whites Beach. “It’s incredibly important we have successive generations understand and improve the environmental health of the dunes. Today was a great activity to share that understanding. “Dune systems are continually exposed to high winds, tides and rainfall and continue to be trampled by beachgoers leaving designated tracks and ignoring signs, having a devastating impact on local habitat.”

Rescue for TAFE ‘cruel hoax’: MP cancelling training worth $30 million. Mr Herbert said the third parties “didn’t meet the institute’s high standards”. “These contracts were inappropriately approved under the Liberals and cancelled under Labor.” Mr Herbert said his Government had invested an additional $16.3 million to help The Gordon recover from the previous government’s “harsh cuts”. The Gordon chief executive officer Lisa Line said the institute was in a strong capital position to provide a “solid platform for future growth”. In October The Gordon received $6 million under the Victorian Government’s TAFE Back to Work Fund and $1 million to establish a Skills and Jobs Centre. The institute recently received $5.13 million in Community Service funding which is part of the Labor Government’s $320 million TAFE Rescue Fund.
Police urge man to come forward Detectives are urging a man to come forward after a fire gutted a Geelong West church last Friday. The man is a potential witness to the fire and Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives have been told he was riding a dark coloured mountain bike near the scene before he stopped to watch the Pakington Street blaze for a short time. He engaged in conversation with another man, who police have spoken to, before riding off just after 4.30am. Detectives want to speak to the man and have released footage of him riding past the fire scene, captured from a mobile phone, in the hope it will assist the investigation. The man is described as Caucasian in appear-
ance, thirties and about 182cm tall. He was wearing a cap underneath his bike helmet, a black and white striped shirt under a blue coloured hoodie, shorts, and fingerless gloves and was carrying a light yellow or cream coloured backpack. Much of the 103-year-old Presbyterian church on Pakington Street had to be knocked down following the fire, which is being treated a suspicious. Anyone with information about the fire or anyone who knows the identity of the man is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au

BIG RIDE: Belinda and Scott Austin present a signed Geelong Cats jumper to Cameron Falloon and Foodbank Victoria’s Dave McNamara, with a signed Geelong jersey.
Charity ride’s hunger for food relief By LUKE VOOGT Two mates stopped in Geelong this week as part of their nine-day Victorian cycling odyssey to raise money for Australia’s largest hunger-relief charity, Foodbank. Foodbank Victoria chief executive officer Dave McNamara and Cameron Falloon, who are leading the inaugural Hunger Ride, had just completed the second-last leg from Geelong to Ballarat. “It’s been great,” Mr McNamara said. “We’ve met a lot of local agencies who use our service and local people that benefit from Foodbank. “I think it’s one of the best kept secrets in Australia, that so many people are going hungry.” The pair visited Geelong’s Empire Grill restaurant for a charity dinner on Tuesday after completing the 112km leg in just over three hours.

The duo has ridden 1100km so far on their fundraising adventure. “We’ve seen some amazing stuff, it’s a beautiful state, but the body’s suffering a little bit,” Mr McNamara said. Mr McNamara and Mr Falloon – an AFL fitness coach and a personal trainer to the late Princess Diana – met at their sons’ Auskick. Mr Falloon approached Mr McNamara about a ride around Victoria. “The idea was to find something that would really catch peoples’ imagination,” Mr Falloon said. Mr McNamara said 108,700 Victorians are going hungry and that $25 can feed a family for a week. “We can turn $1 into $9 because of our relationships with food industry,” he said. “We rescue food all through the supply chain from the farm gate to the store.” Locally Owned and Operated

The Andrews Government has slashed funding for Victorian TAFEs including Geelong’s The Gordon, according to the state opposition. Shadow training and skills minister Steph Ryan tabled the institute’s 2015 annual report last week, saying it showed $33.1 million in cuts to student subsidies. “Daniel Andrews’ promise to rescue TAFE was a cruel hoax,” she said. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos criticised the Government’s TAFE commitments. “Geelong students deserve better than Daniel Andrews’ savage cuts to The Gordon,” Mr Katos said. The report showed a reduction in contestable funding for The Gordon from $57.5 million in 2014 to $24.3 million in 2015. However, Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert said the “cuts” were due to third parties

Viva’s Geelong refinery has been fined $7500 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) emitting an excess amount of fluoride last November. EPA executive director of regional services Damian Wells said following a notification by Viva that it had breached its emission limits EPA launched an investigation into the incident. “The investigation found that fluorine compounds had been released from Viva’s site at a rate of 160 grams-per-minute, above the licence limit of 140 grams-per-minute, Mr Wells said. “EPA will now require Viva, through a notice, to identify the cause of the high emissions and ways to address the problem. “Although there is no indication that any damage to the environment has occurred from this breach, fluorine emissions higher than permitted in Viva’s licence could result in offsite impacts to plants and the community. “As a condition of Viva’s licence, it is required
to undertake offsite monitoring to see if any impacts have occurred from fluorine emissions. “Monitoring undertaken during the emissions has indicated no offsite impacts. Mr Wells said that EPA had also become aware of further breaches of Viva’s licence for fluorine compound emissions. “EPA is investigating these further breaches in accordance with its Compliance and Enforcement Policy and further sanctions are possible, Mr Wells said. Refinery general manager Thys Heyns said the company accepted the penalty and was disappointed with the performance. He said Viva had engaged independent experts to assist in identifying the root cause of the four occasions the refinery exceeded its licence conditions during late 2015 and early 2016. He said the experts would recommend potential solutions to prevent further incidents.

Open the books: road project call Geelong commuters are entitled to know the financial facts about the State Government’s proposed Western Distributor, according to Upper House MP Simon Ramsay. The Member for Western Victoria called on the government to reveal the project’s financial data after its business case was recently redacted. Commuters between Geelong and Melbourne were fed up with Westgate Bridge gridlock and had a right to know all of the available information on the Western Distributor, Mr Ramsay said. “I wonder, is it because the data shows projections of $30 billion revenue to Transurban for an extended 12 years of tolls on their CityLink roads? “It’s not hard to question the State Government’s intentions because they are clearly trying to hide the facts. “I’ve now written to the Premier seeking an explanation over the secrecy, as it turns out that six of the 21 appendices attached to the business case have not been released.” Mr Ramsay said the government needed to consider the needs of commuters before Transurban shareholders. “We’re not in the business to fatten up the Transurban shareholders’ wallets and commit another 12 years of tolls on Victorian motorists,” he said. “The recent anniversary of Mr Andrews’ tearing up $1.1 billion to not build the East-West Link has reminded us that this poor man’s alternative
is wasting far more than its budgeted $5.5 billion, half of which is the Victorian taxpayers’ money. “Geelong commuters deserve better - they deserve a proper west link connection with a fast rail to Melbourne instead of a hopeless rail service and a congested western road connection to our major city. “Both these transport links are severely affecting the productivity of the City of Geelong and its residents.” Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the maximum possible information about the project had been released in the business case without compromising the state’s ability to get the best possible outcome for Victorians. Mr Donnellan said the Western Distributor would deliver a second river crossing, immediate travel time savings of up to 20 minutes a day from Geelong or one hour and 40 minutes a week. “For the first time Geelong commuters will have a choice of how to reach the CBD,“ he said. “They can use express lanes on the West Gate Freeway to access the West Gate Bridge or use the West Gate Freeway and the Distributor, which as well as connecting to the city and the surrounding road network with connections to CityLink, Dynon Road and an extended Wurundjeri Way. “The Western Distributor will provide a much-needed alternative to the West Gate Bridge, create 5,600 jobs and deliver an $11 billion dollar boost to Victoria’s economy.”

REVIVED: Police and SES members promote the TAC’s pit stops, returning again this long weekend.
Stop for barista-made driver reviver “Free barista coffees” will be available to Geelong motorists travelling around regional Victoria over the long weekend, according to the city’s TAC headquarters. The free coffees will be handed out as the TAC resumes its Driver Reviver Pit Stop initiative to prevent fatigue-related crashes. The TAC said its Pit Stops would offer motorists a “VIP rest stop experience, with free barista coffees, bottled water, luxury toiletries, family activi-
ties, competitions and giveaways. Sausage sizzles will raise money to help local State Emergency Service units raise money for rescue equipment.” Victorian Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan said everyone deserved to return from the Anzac Day long weekend safely. “Long weekends are a time when people often find themselves driving longer distances ... and, when you bring fatigue into the equation, it can be a tragic mix,” he said.

Letters Bureaucracy passes buck at City Plaudits to Peter Loney (Geelong Indy, 15 April) for his disquiet regarding the corrosive role of City of Greater Geelong bureaucracy and whether “serious stuff ” can be remediated via a legislative dismissal of council within a compromised timeframe. While it’s a plus that some bullying and endemic thuggery were outed, a popularly elected mayoral model constituting a small collection of likeminded full-time incumbents, devoid of political aspirations, vested interests, egos and Elizabethan role-play, would be best to serve ratepayers and local business. Taking all of that on board and without wishing to put words in Mr Loney’s mouth, doesn’t a fair proportion of the dysfunction-and-mismanagement buck stop ultimately with the City’s CEO? With salary and incentives close to those of the PM, shouldn’t there be some transparent accountability? Given the selective $59 million wards funding currying-of-favour, entrenched selective small business expansion stonewalling and whitewashing of City employee complaints prior to media exposure, it would appear not. Richard Worland Manifold Heights
State late to act on council In regards to the sacking of Geelong’s council, it seemed unfitting that former-mayor Darren Lyons was named and shamed when other councillors and administration officers were seemingly guilty of far worse. The toxic culture at council was a disgrace but council is, lawfully, just a department of State Government, not a constitutionally-recognised, separate tier of government. It’s just an agent of the state. Nevertheless, council is something of a law unto itself and has never been pulled up by the state, so therefore the state bears much responsibility for council’s misdemeanours, as it should, and probably did, known what was going on there.

If private citizens knew, why didn’t the government? Gary Oraniuk Geelong West
Let people sack governments So the Andrews Government sacked Geelong’s council on various grounds including dysfunction and a bullying culture. A council and lord mayor elected by the people can be sacked on a whim of Parliament. Is this democratic? Why not return the power of veto to the people? We could, like the Swiss, have mechanisms in place to sack local councils and state governments if enough people wished it to happen. Why not go the whole hog? Why can’t Australian voters have mechanisms to have an incompetent state or federal government throw out, or even the High Court if it doesn’t act in the national interest? Instead of granting more power to our state and federal parliamentarians, let’s return power to the people. After all, that’s how a democracy is supposed to run. Alan Barron Grovedale

Petrol cars are beginning to have competition, much to the delight of the green activists who demand the end of fossil fuels. But as Peter Rees pointed out from Germany’s experience (Letters, 15 April), when it comes to the larger task of supplying electricity on the grid to industry and residential conglomerations, the green preferences of solar and wind are useless. While we Aussies slip back into the horse and buggy days, except for our Teslas, we’ll have the sardonic pleasure of knowing that China is planning to export thermal coal power to Germany at half the price Germans are paying for solar and wind power. Tim Saclier Leopold
Green power to the people A Homegrown Power Plan launched by Solar Citizens and GetUp! spells out how we can transition Australia to 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030. Next will be transport, then decarbonising the whole energy system by 2050. The plan states: “We can unleash the power of the sun and wind to provide clean, safe, affordable and reliable energy… or we can choose to keep burning fossil fuels that pollute our atmosphere and warm our planet.” A group of skilled people are developing community renewable energy plans with local business and expertise through Geelong Sustainability’s community-owned renewable energy task group. I’m honoured to be part of this team. The plan includes the gradual and orderly closure of coal-fired power with a just transition for workers and communities; secure, affordable electricity; and a fair go for electricity consumers whether they have solar or not. Industry says this plan can be delivered if the right policies are put in place. We await the Victorian renewable energy target announcement. Vicky Grosser Manifold Heights

Diamond-cut classics last By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN The music of Neil Diamond is one of the rare stayers in an ever-changing music industry, with Hot August Night one of those records that’s in every collection. So to get the imprimatur of one of pop’s enduring legends is high praise indeed for tribute artist Peter Byrne. Byrne has won awards for his work in spreading the Neil Diamond gospel and received a letter of congratulations from the man himself. “I met him in 1996 and he is well aware of what I do,” Byrne admitted modestly. Byrne puts on a two hour concert experience performing Diamond’s greatest hits spanning three decades. Forever Diamond features all the hits like Sweet Caroline, Song Sung Blue, I Am I Said, Cherry Cherry, Beautiful Noise, Cracklin’ Rosie, Crunchy Cranola Suite, Holly Holy and Solitary Man to name a few. “It’s just me paying tribute to a wonderful guy and his songs,” Byrne said simply in his lyrical Irish accent. “I don’t pretend to be him because I have far too much respect for him. But I tell a few stories and have a lot of fun with the audience.” Byrne was chosen as one of only 12 tribute artists around the globe to represent Australia by participating in a documentary about the influence of Neil Diamond’s music. “The documentary is about why so many people love his music and why there are so many tributes to it,” Byrne said. “The producers chose the best 12 tributes around world and it is endorsed by Neil himself. Byrne gets to perform two Diamond songs in the documentary: Walk on Water from Hot August Night and his cover of the duet You’ve Lost

BEAUTIFUL NOISE: Peter Byrne receates a Neil Diamond concert. That Loving Feeling. Byrne got his start in the music business from Irish icons The Furies, with whom he grew up and are still good friends. “They put me on stage when I was 19 to sing a
song and it went from there,” Byrne said. Byrne and his six-piece band perform at GPAC on 23 April. For tickets contact 5225 1200 or go to gpac. org.au.
Geelong’s Thomas Banks is young, gay and has cerebral palsy. And now he also has a one-man show, Someone Like Thomas Banks, which plays the Bellarine Peninsula for two shows starting on Friday night. The production is billed as a story of Banks’ courage and defiance while searching for love and claiming his identity. Platform Youth Theatre and Straightjacket Productions have joined forces to present Banks’ story. They said the show “combines expression of self and persona while being poignant, intimate and revelatory but the overall concept is light-hearted and funny, involving interactions with strangers, potential lovers and would-be friends about confusion, communication and connection. The production’s promoters said the story would “inspire and ... leave you wanting more”. Drysdale’s Potato Shed hosts Someone Like Thomas Banks at 7.30pm on Friday 22 April and at 2pm on Saturday 23 April.

TRIBUTE: The combined Geelong and South Barwon Salvation Army bands.

DiSCOvERANEWLEvEL
GEELONG'S St Mary’s Basilica will this weekend host a musical commemoration of Australia’s illfated 2/22nd Battalion, which lost 608 members in World War II. The Geelong and South Barwon Salvation Army bands will perform classic Anzac songs and tributes to remember the battalion on Sunday as the region prepares to commemorate its fallen soliders. The 2/22nd Battalion’s regimental band included 23 members who played with Salvation Army bands until they enlised in 1940. Famed soloist Sarah Hepworth will perform in the St Mary’s tribute, with other guests to make speeches as part of the event. The Battalion served as a garrison force at Rabaul, New Britain, until 23 January 1942 when Japanese troops stormed ashore in the early hours of the morning, capturing and killing many soldiers.

FAMILY DISCO Borgata offers an authentic Italian food experience.
Saturday 23rd April 2016 6pm till 10pm
The addition of Borgata to Lara’s growing restaurant scene will help put the town on Geelong’s food map. With chef and proprietor of 44 years’ experience behind it in Piero Volpe, Borgata aims to create a wonderful atmosphere with high standard service presenting authentic Italian cuisine. “There will be no need to travel to Geelong. Lara can live and eat local,” Piero enthuses. Borgata, translating simply as “suburban” will be a little slice of Italy, located within the expanded Lara Village. “Working beside many talented European chefs, we have developed the culinary skills to prepare an exceptional meal and a keen eye for the flavours that we know patrons will enjoy,” Piero says.
Enjoy a night out with friends whilst your kids dance the night away! $15 Adults & $8 Kids Includes a Meal Children must be accompanied by an adult. Strictly no drinks to be brought into the venue as we are fully licensed. Drinks @ Bar Prices BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL

Its family credentials are boosted with a children’s menu, alongside gluten-free options. Look out for Borgata Italian Restaurant open soon in Lara Village, phone 5282 4565.

GEELONG BRAKE & CLUTCH
Easy, efficient and expert at parts, repairs for all vehicles
Free Brake Check!
Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including offroad and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We‘re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett St, phone 5222 7411.
We can help with your next project! We can match the colour of your car in an aerosol can, or even supply everything you need for a complete restoration.

SPORT Cats wary of Power surge By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong coach Chris Scott was right to be wary of Essendon last week and his wariness has not lessened this week. The Cats face a Port Power side being roasted after a “disgraceful” thumping at the hands of the GWS Giants. Everyone at the club, from chairman David Koch and coach Ken Hinkley down, is feeling it. Human nature dictates that people – even professional athletes – get angry at suffering such embarrassment. It's times like these that football turns into an emotional game despite the cold professional approach required in the big league. Scott prefers to rely on the professionalism of his players to understand the dynamics of the situation and prepare accordingly. But understanding it logically and responding to the emotion of the situation can be two different things. Scott said he was anticipating a big build-up from the Power after their heavy defeat. “They’re a talented team, not so far removed from the team that beat Hawthorn last year,” Scott said. “The weekend’s performance was quite poor but right at the moment they will be feeling some scrutiny. “Our challenge is to prepare for Port Adelaide at their best.” Scott said exhorting his team to get Port Adelaide while it was down was fraught with danger. “It’s a dangerous place to be to manipulate the opposition’s mindset,” he said. “We will look to get on top and put some pressure on them early but not because they are susceptible mentally.
Conditions are glassy smooth ON THE BITE Chris Pitman
MEDIOCRE: Mitch Duncan says the Cats can improve. “It’s the worst thing in footy to go in expecting the opposition not to give a yelp because invariably when you go in with that mindset you get ambushed.” The great performance against Hawthorn in round one – when Geelong won the contested ball and clearances – may have masked the fact that it takes time to gel. Mitch Duncan admitted the side had a lot of work to do after the win over the Bombers. “We’re just a mediocre side at best at the
moment and very inconsistent,” Duncan said. “I think we can get a lot better. We’ve only played a few games together now. “We’re still gelling together as a group, it’s just a very different looking side to the one we had last year.” Geelong will follow up the visit to the Adelaide Oval for Saturday night’s game against Port Adelaide with a return engagement against Adelaide a fortnight later.
Anglers sought out a wide variety of species to make the most of calm autumn conditions over the past week. Corio Bay resembled a sheet of glass most mornings last week, allowing anglers keen on flicking a soft plastic to encounter fantastic pinkie snapper. The Western Beach mornings were a great time and place, with pinkie snapper schooling up densely. There were reports of the odd larger snapper making an appearance around the Western Beach moorings for those fishing lightly weighted pilchards. Structures such as the old tug boat wharf were also productive locations with pinkies holding in tight against the pilings. The grammar school lagoon channel was a popular spot for a mixed bag with pinkies, flathead and the odd pike. Brad Mitchell ventured over to Bird Rock at the entrance to Corio Bay last Friday, where he took 10 nice whiting to 35cm. Brad mentioned he did have to pick through a few small whiting. Over at Clifton Springs the whiting were in better numbers but of around the same size. Anglers found the section of water seven to eight metres out from the Old Dell to once again produce the best results. Squid were the focus of anglers fishing the entrance to Swan Bay with the last of the runin tide working best. Size three jigs were perfect for the task when cast ahead of the drift.
One goal. WorkSafe’s goal is to help make workplaces safe, so that all the players, officials, volunteers and fans can be there every weekend, doing their bit for their club. Proud sponsors of Country Football and Netball for over a decade.
