■ Old soldier says army career was a blast...

Bob shakes it up By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS DON’T call Bob Walker a tin-rattler. As the 80-year-old DandenongCranbourne RSL member said, he doesn’t need to shake a can to sell badges and poppies for the Anzac Appeal. Ask him about his story as he sits in his regular spot outside Doveton’s Autumn Place shops. It doesn’t take long to realise this Hallam knockabout has been a witness to notable history. Maralinga 1957. Mr Walker was a fresh-faced army recruit, who had just watched the Melbourne Olympics on a CBD cafe’s black-and-white TV screen. The crackling display was about the size of a modern day mobile phone, he adds with a laugh. Maralinga was the scene of British atomic-bomb testing at the time. Mr Walker saw four bombs go off from outside the eight-mile exclusion zone. “You can’t look at it because the flash will blind you. “After the initial blast, you turn around and just see this massive black cloud grow. “The mushroom cloud ... It goes up and up and up. You are amazed at it.” There was only one time when Mr Walker felt shockwaves from these tremendous explosions. He believes the jolt that rippled through his body had bounced off clouds. The resulting Royal Commission into testing heard a lot of stories that were “bulldust” he said. The claim that intellectually disabled people used as test dummies just didn’t happen he said. The safety systems in place were “unbelievable”, though Mr Walker wasn’t sure if the radiation-gauge badges actually worked. In 1957, Mr Walker was flown out to the Malayan Emergency – a 12-year guerrilla war in Malaysia.

A worldly Bob Walker has many tales to tell. 152844 He arrived in time to be part of a ceremonial guard during the declaration of Malaysia’s independence from the Brits. It was the longest military conflict Australia had been involved with before Afghanistan. Yet no one here knew about it because it was never declared a war, Mr Walker said. Lords in London instead described the conflict as an emergency, to ensure insurers still paid out on rubber plantations and tin mines targeted by

terrorists, he believes. His time at Puckapunyal army base from 1960 seemed to be more mundane. Memories of being “young and single and all the rest of it” as well as painting a lot of stones on hard ground with white paint. “We had a saying: if it stays still, paint it.” More than 50 years on, Mr Walker sits patiently in the elements to collect for the RSL appeal. Most of his contemporaries prefer

help wars but to help a few blokes out.” Mr Walker tells of support services getting around a returned soldier from Afghanistan whose life went haywire and was living in his car. “People don’t ask for help. A lot of the time it’s stubborn pride.” He has his health problems – though he’s quite sure none linger from Maralinga. There are a lot of blokes who are worse off, he said.

Ex-partner was phone harassed 900 times By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN charged with breaching an intervention order by calling and texting a former partner more than 900 times has been refused bail. Brad Wilson of Doveton told the bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 18 April that he believed the ex-partner had framed him by hacking his phone. Senior Constable Mike Vaughan of Cranbourne family violence unit told the court the two-year de facto relationship

ended in October after alleged verbal and physical abuse. Wilson had been reportedly harassing males at the victim’s workplace in the belief she was seeing one of them. Soon after being served an interim intervention order, Wilson phoned and texted the victim 954 times between 17 and 22 March. The excessive contact had a “paralysing” effect on the victim, who had since seen a psychiatrist for her rising panic and anxiety, Sen Const Vaughan said. Wilson made no comment on

the allegations to police. “I’m not a dog like her,” he told them. The informant told the court that Wilson had assaulted a second former de facto in a car in Narre Warren on 14 April. Wilson, who owed the expartner money, hit her first in the left arm. He then told her: “I’ll do it, I’ll punch you in the face.” The victim was punched in the left cheek, causing pain and swelling. Wilson told her he’d get his “bikie mates” to shoot her in the

head. “I’ll do it myself now if I could,” he told her before he was let out of the car. After she reported the matter to police, she received threatening texts and calls from Wilson. He told police the partner called him a “fag” and had been hitting him. At the time he was on a community corrections order on charges of stalking the former partner as well as for an indecent assault in Casey Hospital on 10 December. The court heard Wilson allegedly forced his way into a female

toilet in the hospital, pushed over his victim and assaulted her. Wilson told the court he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia but denied he still suffered from it. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the allegations involved ongoing family violence since midMarch, despite Wilson being on a community order. He also granted an interim intervention order to protect the second ex-partner. Wilson was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 26 April.

Pipes sound 30th birthday greeting By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS WITH a fanfare of bagpipes and a monumental sponge cake, Hallam Community Learning Centre rang in 30 years in high spirits on 21 April. This learning hub began as a humble playgroup in a football change room. Today in Kays Avenue, it’s a vibrant playground, early learning centre and a classroom for all ages. Manager Dianne Wilson said the centre – packed with members, tutors and dignitaries for the birthday – was now an irreplaceable part of Hallam. “There’s too much history here to just close the doors and start a new one. “The thing that makes it special is the people who have visited, instructed, stayed here and helped with fund-raising. “Many say it’s a home away from home.” Sue Hall is one of several founding playgroup mums who have stuck around and helped run the centre which holds computer, English as a second language, arts and crafts classes. Ms Hall, a previous manager of the centre, still comes along for Red Cross and exercise classes. “I know when I walk in the door there’s a friendly group of people.” Another is current administrator Ingrid Broad. She became secretary in the centre’s early years, basically, because she could type. Now she publishes the regular newsletter, works the payroll and keeps the books. She simply loves her job. Mary McGill, another stalwart, takes part in folk art and quilting classes and a weekly face-to-face chat group. “We’re all friends here and none of us are afraid to help each other out.”

IN BRIEF

Reserve fire was deliberate POLICE are investigating what’s believed to be a deliberately lit fire which burned a quarter of a hectare of nature reserve in Hallam. The grass fire destroyed a large patch of land in the Gunns Reserve, off the Monash Freeway, on Saturday 16 April. Hallam CFA attended and extinguished the blaze around 6.30pm and police are currently investigating the fire. Narre Warren Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Clark is hoping someone has seen the fire, due to its “reasonable size”. Anyone with information on the blaze is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

POLICE allege they caught an Endeavour Hills driver travelling at almost twice the 50km/h speed limit in Doveton. Casey Highway Patrol members intercepted a car allegedly travelling at 93km/h about 5.15am on Saturday 16 April. They pulled over the 25-year-old driver on Cootamundra Street and he provided a positive preliminary breath test. Officers took him to a police station where he returned an evidentiary breath test reading of 0.097. A preliminary oral fluid test also returned a positive result for methylamphetamine, or ice. The driver had a cancelled licence and four passengers in the car. He will be charged on summons for drink and drug driving offences.

Two thumbs up for veterans’ micro beer By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS BEER seems to be a common language, a social conduit for all generations of veterans. Get three veterans of separate missions Vietnam serviceman John Wells, with East Timor peacekeeper Colin ‘Rowdy’ Rout and Young Veterans founder Scott May - together with the amber liquid and the stories start to flow. “The equipment and technology may be different, but the stories are still the same,” Mr Wells said. “So are all the lies we all tell. Talk to me at 4pm on Anzac Day and I’ll tell you I have four VCs,” he jokes. The three veterans are sampling a Dandenong and Cranbourne RSL offering, a microbrewery-brewed Two Up Beer. It’s been an initiative of Young Veterans to distribute a craft beer to RSLs, one that ap-

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL pealed to modern servicepeople who were adventurous in their beer tastes. Yet, the pale ale has a dark enough colour and malty flavour that won’t alienate the older veterans, Mr May said. To make sure, the beer has been markettested by a panel of veterans from a range of conflicts. It has Anzac roots - 50 per cent Australian hops, and 50 per cent New Zealander. And it’s branded with a nostalgic logo that nods to the tri-forces and the Anzac 100-year heritage. “Everything in defence has to have a meaning,” Mr May says.

As Mr Rout sips from a pot, he recalls a memory from 10 years ago. When a large pallet of alcoholic beverages was accidentally delivered to the frontline in Balibo, East Timor. “At the front of all our minds was this pallet, but we weren’t allowed to drink.” ‘Rowdy’ says a soldier had to be posted to guard the pallet for several days. Though he’s a Carlton Draught man, Mr Rout said he liked the Two Up’s solid flavour. “It’s a heavy beer with a bit of depth.” Mr Wells, who is the Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL president, says it’s a beer that sends a signal about what modern RSLs are trying to send to younger members. “We’re a club, not a museum.” Two Up Beer is served at RSL sub-branches in Clow Street, Dandenong and 1475 South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 25 April 1916 To The Editor SIR - I trust you will give me space for the following, which I think the public ought to know. In the first place, at a jumble fair held in the show grounds some six months ago, in aid of the Red Cross, Dr Langley spoke and acted in a way which I looked on as an insult to my wife and on that occasion I had to speak to him about his behaviour. The result was that I went off his medical list. He has appeared antagonistic to us ever since. AW Pearson. 50 years ago 14 April1966 Flying Saucer Mystery: School Silent

What was it? AFTER more than a week of investigation, mystery still surrounds the reported sighting last Wednesday of a flying saucer near the Westall High School. Investigations of the report have been hampered by the reluctance of school authorities to permit interviews with eyewitness students and staff members. Several children attending the school and at least one staff member are reported to have seen the unidentified flying object. They are believed to have given corroborating descriptions of the object as a “round, humped object with a flat base being circled by what appeared to be light aircraft.” It was described as grey or silver grey in colour but it is not known whether the object appeared high or

low in the sky or for how long it was observed. One report said several children who saw the object collapsed and became ill with fright. 20 years ago 29 April 1996 Girls Booted Out THE parents of two Dandenong North girls are threatening to take legal action because their daughters have been stopped from playing junior football. “We’ll take it to the courts if we have to,” John Van De Heiuligenberg, one of the fathers, said after his daughter was told only hours before the first game that she would not play. “Have we stepped back that far that we tell girls what sport they should and shouldn’t be playing?”

he asked. The decision was made by the league after talks with club representatives. “In bringing in the rule, we were acting in accordance with guidelines set by the National Australian Football Council and Equal Opportunity Tribunal,” the secretary of DDJFL said. “Our main aim in implementing it was to act in the interest of the girls. Playing in mixed teams after 12 years of age can put girls at risk of long term physical injury.” 5 years ago 25 April 2011 Medals, memories, and moments of reflection ANZAC Day for Tom Dusting is not about celebrating, but remembering.

This morning, the 88-year-old Springvale resident will be joining hundreds of other men and women who have served the nation in a march through the streets of Melbourne. “When we were younger we used to go out as mad as snakes and play two-up. “There aren’t many about... we’re all over 80. “You don’t really celebrate the day. You just think about what it means.” Mr Dusting said he “will share a drink with a mate of mine who was in the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces. The two of us fought in Borneo and then spent 12 months volunteering in Japan”. - Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

Council pecks at plan By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS CASEY council has taken aim at local MP and state Roads Minister Luke Donnellan over his dismissal of a “bird-brained” $500 million offer of federal funding to widen the Monash Freeway. At a council meeting on 19 April, Mayor Sam Aziz said Mr Donnellan’s comments in State Parliament last week effectively rejected a “once and for all” solution to worsening congestion on the freeway. The mayor said Mr Donnellan had instead put politics first by pushing ahead with the state’s own $400 million Monash widening plan, which would “short change” the south-east of $600 million freeway funding. “We do it properly or we don’t do it at all,” Cr Aziz said. “It’s a no-brainer and let the electorate decide who’s the bird brain and who’s not.” Councillors unanimously voted for

the council to write to Mr Donnellan and Premier Daniel Andrews to urge the State Government to accept and match dollarfor-dollar the $500 million federal offer - effectively increasing the state’s contribution by $100 million. The council resolved that the state’s plan to widen the freeway between Eastlink and Clyde Road, Berwick, would not meet the Casey-Cardinia growth corridor’s projected needs. It is expected that 250,000 extra residents will live in the region in the next 25 years. Under the Federal plan, the Monash would be widened by an extra lane in both directions between Warrigal Road, Chadstone, and Cardinia Road, Pakenham. Cr Gary Rowe told the meeting that an additional road would also be built at the Princes Highway interchange at Beaconsfield under the plan, which would provide a diversion route to the Dandenong South jobs hub. On 13 April Mr Donnellan accused

the Turnbull Government of failing to adequately research the project when it announced the Monash Freeway as the key project under its $1.5 billion funding injection. As a condition of the funding, the Federal Government insisted that the project was separated from the state’s signature Western Distributor plan. Mr Donnellan said the Federal demands were “bird-brained”. “The Turnbull Government has failed to undertake the detailed work and develop a business case or even outline to the community what it’s proposing,” he said. He said the State Government’s existing plan will not be thrown out. “We’ve already started widening the Monash by moving to the next phase. “We’ve announced that three highly experienced construction teams had been shortlisted to complete the design and construction of the additional lanes and

widening.” Gembrook MP Brad Battin turned the criticism back on Mr Donnellan, accusing him of failing to think forward for southeast commuters who are already slugged with huge traffic delays each morning on the freeway. “He simply does not understand what local residents go through each day in traffic chaos,” he said. “Maybe if Luke Donnellan lived in the area he pretends to represent he would understand. “He travels against traffic to get from the city each morning to his office, unlike Casey and Cardinia residents who travel to the city in the morning three-hour peak.” The State Government has shortlisted three construction companies for the project and the winner will be announced in the middle of the year. Construction is due to begin by the end of the year and be completed by the end of 2018.

Breakfast is the toast for learning The club complements the school’s Stephanie Alexander vegetable garden and cookery class and its fortnightly free fruit on Fridays. Last week, the state-funded breakfast club was rolled out to 78 schools, including Hallam Primary School and Southern Cross Primary School in Endeavour Hills. In total, 500 government primary schools are expected to launch breakfast clubs this year as part of the $13.7 million program. Foodbank, as a partner to the program, is delivering the food to the schools. Hallam Primary School is seeking sponsors to provide bread and toast-spreads such as jam and Vegemite. To help, call the school on 9703 1536.

Amelie and Amelia enjoy a social breakfast.

NEW toilets have been installed at Hallam Station – the first to be built at an unstaffed metropolitan Melbourne train station. The two new automated toilets feature large cubicles and hand basins with one unit also providing baby changing facilities. Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley said that while the delayed completion of the project was not ideal, the initiative will be of great assistance to all, particularly those travelling with infants. “We’ve had to wait for too long, but these fantastic new facilities are now up and running, accessible for all and include much needed baby changing facilities,” Ms Couacaud Graley said. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said that residents who utilised the Hallam Station for their daily travels will welcome the completed works. “It’s a small but much needed improvement to Hallam Station that will ensure no-one has to hold on until they reach their destination,” Mr Donnellan said.

UNGRY students are getting their healthy fill thanks to a new round of breakfast clubs opening at Casey primary schools. From the first day of the program on 11 April, 30 Hallam Primary School students made the most of a sit-down together to free toast, fruit, baked beans and cereal before class. The school’s breakfast club organiser Shirley Fletcher said students, who had skipped breakfast, were yawning their way through classes. “This is a way we can promote that it’s a very important start to the day. “It makes their brains more alert – we hope to see a marked improvement in their learning outcomes.”

Judge told: ‘I won’t burp’ By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN was chastised for burping and laughing as he faced Dandenong Magistrates’ Court for smashing a grandmother’s laundry with a plank of wood. Joshua Imrei, 23, who was stated to live in the Dandenong area, had been arrested on 17 April after being intercepted with two other males in a car in Endeavour Hills. One of the occupants had a loaded pistol in their pocket and knuckledusters in his pants. Imrei claimed he owned a knife in

a sheath that was found in another occupant’s bag by police. In court, his lawyer said the other males mistakenly told police that the knife belonged to Imrei. He also pleaded guilty during the 18 April hearing to stealing sausages from Narre Warren IGA by stuffing them down his pants in November. In December, Imrei allegedly breached an intervention order when he followed his ex-girlfriend into her grandmother’s laundry, damaged a washing machine and then broke a window with a large plank of wood.

Police prosecutor Glenn Horman told the court that Imrei was judged as too aggressive to be interviewed at the time and was assessed by CAT mental health professionals. Imrei was also charged after throwing his coffee over his ex-partner and then hurling her mobile phone at Endeavour Hills shopping centre in July. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen asked Imrei’s lawyer if the accused was well, noting that he had laughed and burped during the hearing. “I’m not having anyone sitting in

court burping. It’s discourteous.” Imrei interjected: “Sorry Your Honour. I won’t burp.” The defence lawyer said CREDIT bail reports outlined Imrei’s history of mental illness but the last report stated Imre was in a “contemplative state”. “He was balancing a correctional order and credit bail (at the same time) which can be difficult to balance.” Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that Imrei had attended most of his CREDIT bail program but had not been so compliant with the 18-month

community order. He said most of Imrei’s recent offending was late last year, he accepted his complex mental health issues and believed that he didn’t know about the loaded gun and knuckledusters. He warned Imrei about the possible implications of carrying a loaded gun in a car during a road-rage incident. “Are you prepared to serve 15-20 years?” Imrei was remanded in custody for a further community corrections order assessment.

Feeling the Casey love AS THE slogans go, New Yorkers ‘Love NY’ as do the burghers of Frankston love their town. Now add to the list City of Casey – with a social-media hashtag. The pay-it-forward campaign Casey – Love This City is the brainchild of Casey City Church pastor Larry Sebastian and wife Christa. Mr Sebastian hopes this goodwill message for random acts of kindness – which has the blessing of Casey Council – is about to go viral. Casey, with its high levels of family violence, suicide and vandalism, is symptomatic of something wrong in the social fabric. There’s a lack of respect for ourselves, others and where we live, he said. “(Love this City) promotes that each one of us have a significant part in our city. “When we see someone in difficulty, we want to do something about it – those values have been lost.” One example is embracing the wave of migrants settling in Casey, some fleeing violence and adjusting to new freedoms.

Helping others is not a one-way street, though, Mr Sebastian said. “They must be willing to embrace our values and what we’re really all about. “But we can’t tell someone coming in that you should follow us. We need to come alongside them.” As for what Mr Sebastian loves about Casey, he talks of the great facilities, council leaders, services and the mix of cultures in the community. At the forefront of the campaign will be its ambassador and former Casey mayor Shar Balmes. Ms Balmes said she didn’t have to think twice in accepting the role. Those were values she already held dear, she said. Mr Sebastian knows this is a long haul. The next step was to promote concrete examples of what people could do in their neighbourhoods and workplaces and post videos on social media that asks random people what love looks like to them. Its success may be difficult to measure. As Mr Sebastian puts it, this is just one of the vehicles to turn things around.

The businessman, philanthropist and 2011 Australian of the Year will feature at the Tap into the Talent SEBN industry breakfast at Highways in Springvale on Tuesday 3 May. As part of The Doveton Project, a push for employment support in the suburb, he’ll speak about business and philanthropy going hand-in-hand and how the approach benefited everyone. OOPS! Readers who delved into the Journal’s Premier Regional Business Awards wrap might have noticed that a few names and faces on page 4 didn’t match up. Apologies to Paul DeBruin from Fantech, Patterson Cheney general manager Cameron Bertalli and Bombardier managing director Rene Lalande. The captions appeared correctly in our online copy, at dandenong.starcommunity.com. au. ENTHUSIASTIC supporters were disappointed when a Dandenong man’s bid to avoid jail time sank in the local magistrates’ court. The magistrate had a list of concerns about the man who was facing several intervention order breaches and had threatened to set his partner on fire if she called police. He banged his fists on her car as she fled

NELLY Yoa’s star continues to rise. Fresh from an interview on the Seven Network’s Sunrise and a story in the Journal, Mr Yoa has been in talks with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Premier Daniel Andrews and the state’s Multicultural Commissioner Helen Kapalos, here with Mr Yoa. The dream for an A-League team remains very much alive as well. Mr Yoa, whose inspiring recovery from a machete attack is now the subject of a documentary, has had encouraging discussions with at least two A-League sides.

What is your favourite book? I couldn’t name just one.

He claimed that he believed he had the right to go back to the family home even though the protected partner was living there. “That view will be rectified,” the defence lawyer pledged. “He now knows he can’t go within 200 metres.” The judge said she wasn’t convinced the man was filled with remorse, despite him spending the past 10 days in a cell. “He’s basically saying ... I can do what I like. It’s the victim’s fault. “This man doesn’t believe any of this is a concern.” In her sentence indication, the judge stated the man should spend another 10 weeks in jail with a community order on top. A CASEY councillor had a modest view of his own artistic judgement at a council meeting on 19 April. Gary Rowe labelled himself an “artistic troglodyte” ahead of launching into a passionate defence of the council’s plans to acquire art for Bunjil Place. There was a little stumble when referring to the lauded Cranbourne artist Ern Trembath. “He would be one (artist) who would deserve the honour of being hung in the gallery,” Cr Rowe said. Colleague Mick Morland retorted that he would, in that case, need some rope.

On ANZAC Day, Australian’s pay tribute to all current and former members of the Australian Defence Force, those lost in training, on operations, the wounded, injured and ill. The ANZAC spirit forged at Gallipoli will never be forgotten. This is why Australians come together every ANZAC day. We do it to remember the ANZACs and their achievements; and we should remember them not as old soldiers from a distant war, but as the young Australians they were in 1915. Our vast country with its harsh beauty and open skies, helps to shape healthy, confident, competitive, innovative and freedom loving individuals, who with good leadership and high motivation, can more than match the best in the world; in whatever they do. The ANZACs showed us these same qualities. We have the ability to face challenges together and overcome them, to put community before self, to be courageous, determined, self-reliant and strong. We should be proud of our heritage. This is the spirit of ANZAC; the spirit that we must pass to the next generations.

No respect for program By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS CASEY councillors have voiced near-unanimous opposition against the State Government’s Building Respectful Relationships school program. Councillor Rosalie Crestani, who brought the motion to a council meeting on 19 April, described the gender-based violence prevention program in public schools as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”. Cr Crestani told the meeting that it promoted premature sexualising of young people, citing Casey Multifaith Networks’ con-

cerns about explicit content. “The community from so many walks of life have expressed outrage.” It was a “sexually political agenda”, akin to a “communistic approach of having the child controlled by the state”, Cr Crestani said. Parents wanting to “escape social engineering” and who couldn’t afford to send their children to private schools were considering home-schooling, she said. An anti-family violence program for 12-year-olds was better

focused on the effects of alcohol and cultural differences, she said. At the meeting, the council decided to invite parents, high school principals, faith communities, police and youth representatives to a forum to consider the program. Cr Wayne Smith, the only dissenter, said he needed more information on the program before he supported Cr Crestani’s motion. As a teacher who mentors young people, he works with children with trangender and sexuality questions.

“I don’t judge them ... one of their issues is a lack of understanding among people around them.” Mayor Sam Aziz retorted that Cr Smith’s need for more information on the program was a “fascinating position”. “Then why are you supporting the program on your Facebook page?” Cr Aziz said the “over-zealous” program was doing harm through corrupting and confusing children “who might not be confused”. According to the government,

the P-12 program introduced this year in government schools focuses on challenging negative attitudes leading to violence, particularly against women. As part of the upcoming 2016/17 budget, the program will receive $21.8 million. The funds include training for teachers and support 120 mentor “lighthouse” schools to champion the program. Prevention of Family Violence Minister Fiona Richardson said a recent Royal Commission into family violence made it clear that early intervention was a vital part of the solution.

Social media forum to hear new ideas NATIONAL Youth Week has prompted discussion around the social media challenges faced by young people, and some of Casey’s teenage leaders got talking with Anthony Byrne MP. The annual national week ran from Friday 8 April to Sunday 17 and provided activities for people aged 12 to 25. Federal Holt MP Anthony Byrne met with the City of Casey Australia Day Study Tour students as part of the celebrations. Mr Holt said he engaged in a brilliant conversation with the bright youths. “Young people are confronting many challenges in the social media age,” Mr Byrne said. “It was great to hear from them

about their concerns and their ideas such as more peer-to-peer youth services for schools.” In 2015, more than 20,000 young people from across Victoria participated in Youth Week festivities and this year’s conversation in Casey has already yielded results. Mr Byrne has decided to organise a social media forum with local students. “This forum will discuss the ongoing challenges and ideas for reform to better protect young people online when dealing with social media services,” Mr Byrne said. The forum will be the first of its kind in Casey, aimed directly at youth and for youth. – GEORGIA WESTGARTH

Cancer test DANDENONG Rotarians will do their bit to beat bowel cancer throughout May. Trevor Harding lost his 38-year-old niece Debbie Greer to the disease about 15 years ago. He’s helping others avoid her fate by running a project that offers $15 Bowelscan kits at Dandenong pharmacies during May. Participants post their completed kit for testing, following the directions included. Kits are available from Terry White Chemists in Dandenong Plaza and Dandenong Central Pharmacy on the corner of Walker and Langhorne streets.

ANZAC DAY 2016

Monument to their dad By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THE cenotaph in Narre Warren North’s farming district has special significance for Private George Rae’s children. Still sprightly 80-somethings, Jack, Bert and Thelma still pay their respects to their father at the five-metre high marble monument which was built by farmers soon after World War I. It stands within a picketfence and rosemary hedge enclosure on Memorial Drive, looking out to their great-grandmother Annie Troup’s homestead which was settled in the 19th century. It memorialises the 18 servicemen who enlisted for World War I from Narre Warren North, including George Rae and brother Walter. All but three returned home. Jack Rae, who has lived in the district his whole life, knows all the family names etched in the marble. “Wars can bring out the best in people,” he says. “Communities in years gone by get together and work together.” At the time, the war didn’t seem like a nation-building event, he says. Rather it was a war devouring many of the country’s young men from farms and cities. His father George continued working on the family’s 100-

George Rae and others at Royal Park Army Camp, Melbourne, prior to leaving for WWI. Picture: Max Thomson Collection, Narre Warren and District Family History Group plus acre dairy farm in the early years of World War I. He enlisted as a 23-year-old in 1916, serving as a farrier on France’s battlefields. Like many other veterans, he didn’t speak much about his service. But there was one thing his father didn’t forget about the war, Jack said. His father remembered horses that were “knocked around” being transported by train for slaughter. They would be led by an invalid soldier towards their journey to French people’s plates. To get an idea of the steel discipline of the times, George Rae was docked two days’ pay in England in 1916 for not shaving for a parade at 9am. During World War II, Jack was just a teenager enlisted in

a citizens’ military force that met weekly in Dandenong. He, along with another 80 adolescents, learnt how to bear arms. He remembers when war was declared. It was a Sunday because his family’s relatives and friends were gathered at their farm, huddled around the radio. There were going-away presents for the men and women who left for battle, and a ‘welcome home’ event at the local hall at war’s end. Jack was on the brink of turning 18 and being eligible to be sent to the battlefront when World War II ended. His father George returned to service as a Lieutenant of Berwick’s Volunteer Defence Corps – a mix of veterans and younger men recruited to de-

Bert Rae, Thelma Witham and Jack Rae with a photograph of their father George Rae at Picture: GARY SISSONS the cenotaph. 153094 fend the home front if there was an invasion. Jack said there was a feeling of that threat being real after Japanese aerial bombings in Darwin and a foreign submarine probing Sydney Harbour. He remembers black screens being placed over home windows at night, and car’s headlights dimmed by covers - even out in the district’s farmsteads and dirt roads. “We weren’t this little island in the never never anymore because the war landed on our shores.”

East of the memorial still stands the Raes’ late greatgrandmother Annie Troup’s original dairy homestead. North along Memorial Drive stand oak trees marking the 18 men - a football team - who left for World War I. Unfortunately, the name plaques for those trees planted just after the war have long gone, Thelma laments. “I come here quite often,” she said of the memorial. “I think of how hard it must have been for those soldiers. We’ll never know how hard it was.”

Until recent times, the memorial site had been neglected. Jack recalls his late mate Bob Street – whose family name also adorns the cenotaph among the World War II veterans - organising a working bee to clean it up. During that clean up, the top marble slab cracked and fell to the ground - fortunately missing the helpers. The slab now takes pride of place at this tidy memorial - a vista that still harkens to the area’s rural roots.

ANZAC DAY 2016

Ordinary men rise to battle DANDENONG AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY HAS RESEARCHED THE HONOURS AND AWARDS THAT DANDENONG’S SOLDIERS RECEIVED DURING WORLD WAR I. TO MARK ANZAC DAY, THE JOURNAL FEATURES A SELECTION OF THEIR STORIES. Harold Ordish DISTINGUISHED Service Order recipient Harold Ordish had been on the instructional staff at the Royal Military College Duntroon before joined the 10th Machine Gun Company of the 38th Battalion on 23 February 1916. He was 42 years old and married to Ada Jane Brough when he boarded HMAT Ascanius on 27 May 1916 and travelled to France. By 1 April 1916 he was promoted to lieutenant and by 1 May he was a captain. When Sir Douglas Haig was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British armies in France and Flanders in December 1915, he was expected to follow the tradition of his predecessors with the periodical despatches from the front, each detailing the progress of his armies’ campaigns since the last report. Captain Ordish was mentioned in Sir Douglas’s despatch of 9 April 1917and he was promoted to Major on 3 June 1917. He again was mentioned in Sir Douglas’s despatch of 7 November 1917 for distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty during the period of 20 February to 21 September 1917. He was wounded in the field and in 1918 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. He remained in England after the war until January 1920 and his appointment was terminated in Melbourne on 1 May 1920. He remained a professional solider and lived in Randwick, Sydney, until his death at age 73. Reginald Pickett REGINALD James Pickett was a 22-year-old bricklayer living in Maude Street, Dandenong, when he enlisted on the 23 March 1915. He was a lieutenant in the 24th Battalion,

Reginald Pickett. which served during the Gallipoli campaign and in the trenches of the Western Front in France and Belgium. It was raised in haste and received very little training before sailing from Melbourne aboard the Egypt-bound Euripides on 10 May 1915, just a week after being formed. The 24th took part in the second Battle of Bullecourt in 1917 and suffered more than 80 per cent casualties. It was there that Lieutenant Pickett suffered the wounds that earnt him the Military Cross. Continued on page 39

ANZAC DAY 2016 The citation in the London Gazette said that His Majesty the King was graciously pleased to confer the honour “in recognition of his gallantry and devotion to duty in the field”. “Though wounded in the forearm, he led repeated bombing attacks against the enemy for five hours, doing most valuable work at a critical time, clearing the enemy out of the trenches on the flanks of the Hindenburg Line which was captured on 3 May 1917,” the citation said. On 9 October 1917, an enemy machine gunner sniped Lieutenant Pickett through the head and body in the attack on Daisy Wood forward of Broodseinde Ridge. He was reported killed in action. His records show no known grave. “Though wounded in the forearm, he led repeated bombing attacks against the enemy for five hours.” Charles Bellett CHARLES Frederick Bellett was a single, 23-year-old farmer living with his parents on Powers Road, Dandenong, when he enlisted on 1 March 2916 in the 5th Machine Gun Battalion. He left Melbourne on the France-bound Port Lincoln on 4 May 1916. His Military Medal citation said he displayed very conspicuous bravery during the operations near Bellicourt on 29 September 1918. “The locality in which he was waiting with his section pending orders to advance was being heavily shelled and swept by machine gun fire, with the result that a number of our troops and Americans became casualties,” it said. “Private Bellett, with a total disregard for his personal safety, under heavy shell and machine gun fire, rendered first aid to the wounded which could not have been obtained otherwise for some hours owing the scarcity of stretcher bearers. “This soldier’s work through the whole series of operations leading up to the capture of the Hindenburg Line has been very brilliant and of a high standard.” He returned to Australia in July 1919 and lived in the Dandenong and Carrum area. In 1968 he was living in Thames Promenade, Chelsea, and died at age 81 in 1975. He never married.

“Private Bellett, with a total disregard for his personal safety, under heavy shell and machine gun fire, rendered first aid to the wounded.” Edward Haycraft EDWARD Haycraft was a 23-year-old butcher living with his mate’s parents - the Belletts of Powers Road in Dandenong - when he enlisted on 11 February 1916. He joined the 46th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement and sailed for France on 7 September 1916. He received his Military Medal for gallant work in the field near Albert on 6 April 1918. About 3am, an officer lay severely wounded in no man’s land with frequent bursts of machine gun fire hampering rescue efforts. An officer managed to bring him 50 yards closer to safety before Private Haycraft - well aware of the danger after seeing four others wounded in the attempt - went forward and rendered great assistance in effecting the rescue. He then volunteered and helped to carry the wounded officer to the regimental aid post 1200 yards away, under machine gun fire throughout the journey. His coolness and willingness were exemplary. During the spring offensive, Private Haycraft was wounded on 11 July 1918 and the same day died from his wounds at the 47th casualty clearing station. Reverend AC Harris officiated at his burial on 12 July at Crouy, a village about 16 kilometres from Amiens, France.

Mr Bertalli said the dealership had been part of the local community for more than three decades and credited the win to Patterson Cheney’s staff longevity and community support. “We are proud of exceeding our guests’ expectations and delivering a superior ‘Oh, what a feeling!’ promise,” Mr Bertalli said. “This award comes after another big one for the dealership, winning the 2013 Dealer of the Year in 2013 – another prestigious automotive award.” The dealership award also comes hot on the heels of Patterson Cheney being recognised as one of Greater Dandenong’s best businesses of the past 25 years at the annual Premier Regional Business Awards. Founded more than a century ago, the car and truck supplier employs 580 people, has a $600 million annual turnover and services up to 700 cars each day.

INDUSTRY experts and business leaders will inform and inspire in Dandenong on Tuesday 17 May. The Drum Theatre will host a symposia as part of Smart Manufacturing ’16 – Dandenong and South East Melbourne on Show. Committee for Dandenong (C4D) and its partners are presenting the expo-style event to promote the region’s capability and capacity. The symposia will cover smart manufacturing, innovation and commercialisation. Attendees will be able to network with likeminded people, ask questions, and receive advice on the latest commercial, technological, market and career opportunities. “Each presentation aims to inspire and unlock potential for local manufacturers, businesses and the next wave of industry up-and-comers,” C4D chairman Gary Castricum said. “We have secured the top industry experts in their field, all of which operate in the Dandenong and South East Melbourne region, which is home to 5000 enterprises and produces over half of Victoria’s manufactured product.” Mr Castricum said 3D printing would be a key topic, and that leading scientists and engineers would discuss its capabilities, cutting-edge applications, and how it could lower capital investment risk and maximise efficiency for businesses. Other topics to be presented include opportunities for businesses to participate in the defence industry supply chain; the need for manufacturers to be innovative during a technological revolution and how they can grow; the ins and outs of commercialisation and export; pathways to a career in manufacturing; emerging manufacturing industries such as agritech; and opportunities to seek funding. Record for ‘small’ feat By CASEY NEILL A DANDENONG North man has dedicated his new miniature shoe collection record to his late mum. Wilson Fernandez started collecting the miniatures during a trip to India about 10 years ago. He now has more than 1000 and is listed in Limca Book of Records (LBR) for 2016. “I had a mixed feeling when the record news came through,” Mr Fernandez said. “It is a great honour to achieve this award. I just couldn’t believe it. “But at the same time, my heart shattered as my dearest mum passed away. “I didn’t get the opportunity to share the joy of this achievement with mum. “So, I dedicated this achievement as a tribute to my mum for the love, encouragement, support and for making me the person that I am today.” Mr Fernandez said his dad was proud of the award, and thanked the family and friends who’d helped him to achieve “this hallmark of my life”. “I am proud of it and regardless of this award, my collection of miniature shoes will continue to grow.” Mr Fernandez’s first miniature shoe purchase was “small leather sandals in miniature sizes that replicated the big ones exactly”. “They were called Kolhapuri Chappal. I was so amazed to look at the details and the craftsmanship of these miniatures,” he said.

Wilson Fernandez with his collection. 135817 Mr Fernandez bought the jar filled with 12 shoes but forgot about them upon his return home. His wife found them a year later.

Picture: KIM CARTMELL

“She handed it to me with a look and reminded me of the day I was so carried away with those miniature shoes,” he said. “Over the years, during my business and pleasure travels to

new places, I started looking for shoes that represent the countries and places I visited.” The smallest pair is about three by five millimetres in size. Mr Fernandez displays the shoes

on his living room wall. “The wall of great miniature shoes reminds me of the places visited, the best moments of those places, the culture, diversity, friendship and more,” he said.

Clear to see risks A NEW eye health program is coming to Greater Dandenong with a view to target vision loss. Vision 2020 Australia’s Vision Initiative will focus on sight in the municipality over the next two years, along with the City of Brimbank, the shires of Campaspe and Swan Hill. The areas have all been identified as communities at increased risk of eye disease and will receive individually targeted initiatives, ranging from training for primary health professionals to educational materials and eye health awareness campaigns. Vision Initiative’s aim is to eliminate avoidable blindness and vision loss and it’s been piloted in Darebin, Greater Geelong, Greater Shepparton and Latrobe since 2012. Research shows that 75 per cent of vision loss is preventable or treatable. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the program would help Greater Dandenong residents to take control of their eye health and support them to have regular eye tests. “This targeted support will ensure people at greater risk of eye disease in our local community will be able to access the information, care and treatment they need, when they need it,” she said.

Lawyers help asylum drive By CASEY NEILL NEW legal support for asylum seekers will help them to make their case for refugee status. Attorney-General and Keysborough MP Martin Pakula launched the Legacy Caseload Initiative on Sunday 17 April. The new partnership between Victoria Legal Aid, Justice Connect and Refugee Legal is designed to help 11,000 asylum seekers on bridging visas or in immigration detention. During the next two years, the Legacy Caseload Initiative will provide two specialist immigration lawyers, a co-ordinator to finalise pro bono or lowcost legal assistance, and three lawyers at Refugee Legal. Refugee Legal is the only Community Legal Centre in Victoria that specialises in Commonwealth refugee and immigration law, and provides legal assistance to asylum seek-

ers, refugees and disadvantaged migrants in the community and in detention. Through the Community Legal Centres Assistance Fund, the State Government has provided $50,000 to Refugee Legal to expand its migration advice services in Melbourne and across rural and regional Victoria. Springvale Monash Legal Service (SMLS) executive director Kristen Wallwork said individuals regularly sought legal assistance with immigration matters but that SMLS was neither funded nor able to support the necessary registrations to provide assistance. “SMLS thinks it is a fantastic commitment and recognition of the legal needs of some the most vulnerable people in our society,” she said. “Australian society can only be stronger by supporting people who have had to leave their

homes for refuge from civil unrest. “This is what makes us a diverse and rich country.” Mr Pakula said the initiative would provide those who most needed support with the legal assistance to navigate the complex process of seeking refugee status. “This is about helping those who have risked their lives in the hope of making a better life for themselves in Australia,” he said. The ’legacy caseload’ refers to 11,000 asylum seekers who arrived in Australia by boat between August 2012 and January 2014. The Federal Government in 2014 withdrew legal assistance funding for those arrivals and further legislative changes deny them the right to review an adverse primary decision affecting their refugee claim.

Town square shapes up WORK is underway on creating a new Endeavour Hills town square. Casey mayor Sam Aziz and councillors Rosalie Crestani, Rafal Kaplon and Damien Rosario visited the site on 14 April for a first hand look at the $1.1 million revitalisation of the Endeavour Hills community and shopping hub. The new town square represents stage one of the Endeavour Hills Community Precinct Masterplan. Cr Aziz said the project would enhance the area for residents, visitors and businesses. “The precinct adjoins the Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre and includes the leisure centre, neighbourhood centre, skate park and library, so it is

well used,” he said. “Both short and long-term projects have been identified to improve safety and amenity and enhance civic pride in the area. “Stage one, now underway, includes development of a vibrant town square with a cafe/ kiosk for people to meet and enjoy the new outdoor setting. “Shared path connections for pedestrians and cyclists to safely walk and ride to and from the precinct will also be constructed. “These aspects will improve connectivity between the library, leisure centre and neighbourhood centre for pedestrians, cyclists, bus and car users, as well as providing a convenient place to relax and meet.” Stage one construction be-

gan in late 2015 and will be completed in mid-2016. “Stage two is proposed in the council’s 2016/17 draft budget and reflects the council’s long-term vision for the space. It includes landscaping and accessible terracing, upgrades to the youth and skate precinct, improved pedestrian links and a bicycle path,” Cr Aziz said. “Community consultation on the skate park and the terracing and landscaping is under way helping to inform design work in anticipation of stage two. “Once both stages are complete, residents will benefit from an accessible and vibrant precinct, creating improved connectivity between facilities and providing for a greater range of community activities.”

Agony and ecstasy to win By JARROD POTTER THE agony of injury is only temporary but as Bambino Moukassa Mbani found out recently – the glory of a state championship victory is set to last a lifetime. Shin splints made even small steps a frustrating challenge let alone the high-flying leaps that earned Moukassa Mbani a Little Athletics Victoria state track and field gold medal last month. Moukassa Mbani had to dig deep just to get into the high jump final but persevered to clear 1.69 metres and take the title. The under-14 Springvale Little Athletics Centre (SLAC) dynamo had only participated in the field events as a warm-up for his great sprinting passion.

But he was proud of his efforts throughout the carnival, especially in the high jump. “This medal was really amazing – I’m really proud,” Moukassa Mbani said. “High jump on Sunday I did really well and got a gold medal – I did really well and was really happy. “I’m not usually a high jumper, so I knew I might medal but not first – there was another guy who was taller than me and stuff. “But I didn’t let it intimidate me and it doesn’t matter if they’re tall, ’cause they might not be able tojump.” Putting the pain aside to jump his way into the history books, Moukassa Mbani skipped jumps and planned his path to victory expertly as he now re-

covers and prepares for cross country season. “I’ve been suffering from them for a few months now so we’ve gone to see the physio and I’m getting proper treatment now,” Moukassa Mbani said. “But I was jumping and running really injured – I was so sore – but I just said to push through the pain and it was really tough, I reckon a nine out of 10 level of pain. “Keep training hard and smash it up next year as I think I’ll do really well as I was away for a few months and just came back, got back into training and the balance wasn’t really right.” What’s even more pleasing in retrospect is Moukassa Mbani has plenty more left in the tank – as he leapt nearly 1.80m in the regional events leading

up to the state championships at Casey Fields. “It was around 1.70 – that wasn’t my best but I’m pretty happy with that jump that I qualified first and wasn’t expecting it,” Moukassa Mbani said. “I think I jumped better in regionals where I got 1.79m and in state I got 1.70m “I was focusing and praying in my mind and telling myself just to go there and do it – it doesn’t really matter if you lose or win as I see out another year. “For now I know what I’m actually going up against next year and I’m looking forward to training hard over winter.” He also earned a bronze medal in the triple jump to cap off a stellar campaign at the state championships.

Bambino Moukassa Mbani – with father Jean De Dieu and his partner Nonti – celebrated his high jump gold medal at the recently held state titles.

Final hope in City

STUDENT-ATHLETES often get a bad rap in the American college system. The common complaints are they’re not interested in studying, they’re only at the school to play and only care about the athletic side of campus life. But one woman shattering those notions– and more – is Dandenong Rangers alumnus Kiara Phillips. Phillips, 21, from Narre Warren South, is the ultimate student-athlete; excelling in her academic and athletic life at Norfolk State University, in Virginia, USA. Her numbers don’t lie on either side of the student-athlete divide, especially for the just completed 2015/16 campus year. As a student she has a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) studying sociology – effectively a perfect year in American education standards. Add to that her on-court averages – 7.4 points and nearly two assists and a steal per game as a junior – and it’s clear she’s not just excellent with a basketball or pen in her hand, but also extremely well organised. “It hasn’t been easy for sure,” Phillips said. “I am a very organised person who keeps a daily calendar on my phone, in my hand and on my MacBook. “I spend quality time with my other half Jonathan Wade a lot and we usually study together, but definitely staying organised and maintaining a high level of work ethic is on the top of my list to ensure I maintain a great GPA.” Shifting from Australian basketball to the college arena has been equally as challenging, but Phillips – a three-time national champion as a Dandenong junior – wants those tough tasks and difficult prospects. It makes her better after all – that’s her number one aim, not the stats. “Most definitely, the style is very different,” Phillips said. “The college atmosphere there is no comparison and the school rivalry is impeccable. “I thrive in environments like that and it actually makes me play better and I would definitely tell anyone person that is looking to play at the college level and excel in

FFA CUP VICTORIAN QUALIFIERS - ROUND 5 ALL hope now lies with Dandenong City after the remaining local sides were thrashed, bashed and beaten in the latest round of FFA Cup qualifiers. The local force had a dreadful Wednesday night as Dandenong Thunder, South Springvale and Endeavour Hills Fire all exited the elimination competition. Dandenong City booked its place in the last 16 with a 3-0 demolition of Mooroolbark. Ash Cattermole (26’) opened the City accounts before Jarod Blackbourn (45+1’) put another in the back of the net approaching the half. Nothing the hosts could muster managed to stop the resurgent City side, with the icing put on by Anthony Cassar (87’). A youthful Thunder line-up – with coach Huss Skenderovic leaving most of the side’s experience on the sidelines – were no match for Hume City in the 1-3 defeat. Thunder’s hopes of advancing – for the first time since its Dockerty Cup win in 2012 – were dashed early by former clubman Shane Rexhepi (6’), who slotted the first for Hume City from a header before Joseph Franjic (40’) doubled the margin before the half. Veton Korcari (45’) brought it back by one from the penalty spot, but another for the visitors proved the nail in the Thunder coffin to give the side its first loss of 2016. South Springvale’s hope for returning to the national round-of-32 was dashed as Avondale FC thumped Aris 5-1. After a closely fought clash through the first half, as South Springvale only conceded one goal to Avondale’s Vojislav Milojevic (44’), the floodgates opened after the main break. Avondale’s Oleksiy Khrapko (60’, 64’, 67’) smashed a hat-trick in less than 10 minutes to kill off Aris’ chances. Equally punished was the low man on the totem pole Endeavour Hills Fire. The Fire was doused emphatically by highflying Kingston City in a 0-8 romp. Nothing went right for the Fire, who lost Bujar Thaqi to a red card in the 19th minute after a scuffle, before Mahesh Jeetoo’s careless attempt on Mouad Zwen saw the second red for the visitors. With only nine men on the park the result was all but sealed after the two send offs as Kingston City racked up an eight-goal massacre. Our other remaining local side – Doveton SC will battle FC Bulleen Lions on Wednesday night at the Venuto Club from 8.30pm with a spot in the last 16 on the line. Round-of-16 clashes are scheduled for the week of 22 May.

Kiara Phillips has been elite for Norfolk State University on and off the court, embodying everything positive about life as a student-athlete. Picture: NSU the classroom it is an amazing experience that you will never forget. “Basketball is something I have played almost my entire life and I thank God for giving me the talents both on and off the court.” Her on-court highlight this season was nailing 21 points against Howard University to give Norfolk a 110-108 double over-time triumph – which she dedicated to her team mate Amber Brown, who is currently battling illness. “It has been a very challenging season with Amber Brown, my former team mate, fighting for her life,

a brand new coaching staff with 10 games left in the season to go, but I never lost faith,” Phillips said. Phillips wants to finish her college basketball on a strong note– same as her studies – achieving accolades and proving to everyone around her that she belongs in the top echelon on and off the court. “I want to walk away and prove to people that ever doubted me and my ability that I did it, I made it and made a huge difference,” Phillips said. “Going into my senior year I want to be MEAC player of the year, make all conference first team and

just get the most out of the year with minimal injuries as possible. “I love my haters – that is why I am over here excelling at the highest level both on and off the floor. “It was probably the best decision I ever made honestly and I have zero regrets leaving Australia but the only thing is I wish my family was here too.” She wanted to thank her boyfriend Jonathan, her family, Monica Wright and God for always believing in her and helping her reach the place she is today.

Bulls bury the Norsemen By JARROD POTTER GREATER DANDENONG FOOTBALL REVIEW - ROUND 3 PUTTING a big scalp on its early-season mantle, Noble Park held off the fast-finishing Norwood to claim an emphatic 13.11 (89) to 8.13 (61) EFL triumph. Even with a host of big outs - Will Petropoulos, Sean Corrigan, Jackson Sketcher, Piva Wright and Luke Cody - the Bulls had more than enough in the tank to see off the visitors. Hard fought and attritional at the best of times, neither side gave an inch through the first stanza with only two goals booted, one of which was a special effort down the flank from 17-year-old Jordan Marson. The shoot-out through the second term - led by the likes of Kyle Martin (four goals) and Ziggie Alwan (three goals) - kept the game well in the balance at the half, but when the points were there to be taken, Noble Park stood up. The run-and-carry efforts of Kevin Kean, Mitch Gent and Tyson Mitchem gave plenty for the forwards to savour, while the skipper Sam Monaghan relished his huge task in the second half manning Matthew Bate. Another to shine defensively was Ryan Morrison - who has taken to last-line duties with gusto at the Bullring and alongside Trent Robertson made sure Norwood didn’t have an easy time of it inside-50. There was one last gasp from the Norwood faithful - booting a couple of quick goals in the last term to keep things interesting - but it was not enough as the behinds, instead of majors, piled up rapidly. The Bulls settled through goals to Shayne Allan and Alwan to stamp out the dying embers of Norwood’s fightback. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do - our ball movement is not where it should be, our skill level can improve and we’ve changed our structure a bit - maybe that’s had an impact,” Noble Park

Noble Park’s Craig Anderson finds his way to the bottom of another developing pack in the Picture: JARROD POTTER Bulls’ big win over Norwood. 153313 coach Mick Fogarty said. “Norwood are down on personnel and we understand that and we had five really strong players out as well, so that might have evened it up that way but it was a really tough, contested game and obviously pleased with the result.” Fogarty praised the “unbelievable” Ben Giobbi, who has impressed throughout his first three EFL matches, while Martin, Craig Anderson and Brett Dore also impressed on the ANZAC Day long weekend. The unbeaten Bulls head up the hill to Montrose this week. VAFA results were led by St John’s, who pumped the Melbourne High School Old Boys in

a 93-point demolition. An even spread across the board - led by Aaron Thornton (four goals) and Patrick Carr-Lehne (three goals), while the skipper Glenn Costas was exceptional across the paddock. The unbeaten JOCs face Preston at home on Saturday in a tantalising first versus second showdown. The VAFA winners’ list included Masala, as the Tigers beat Chadstone by 100 in the club’s best victory yet. Brad Lovell (six goals), Sam Freeman and Matthew Decarne (four goals apiece) terrorised the Synners up forward. In SFL, Springvale Districts had to fight tooth and nail to overcome Skye 7.6 (48) to 5.5 (35), with Lachlan Morrey (three goals) and Brad

Dight (two goals) sharing the forward work load while Billy Green, Sam Blackburn and Jack Allender also featured in the best. Keysborough’s credentials took another battering, as the Burra was belted by Port Melbourne Colts to the tune of 114 points. Ruckman Bryce Sutton (three goals) went forward to create something for the visitors while Danny Morland and Brandon Mather also flew the flag. There’s a great local flavour to top of the SFL 3 ladder, with Doveton Eagles, Hallam, Lyndale and Endeavour Hills all flying high. Hallam is undefeated after a nail-biting ninepoint win over Moorabbin. Phillip Ward (five goals) and Shane Thomas (four goals) presented all day via the midfield work of Matt Neve and Manny Peresso. Dandenong Stingrays alumnus Jayden Bubb made his Hallam debut, dominating in the ruck as Frankston Dolphins had a development league bye. Doveton Eagles punished the visiting Lions to the tune of 115 points as Peter Dye (five goals) continued his forward-line rampage. Enayte Samadi, Brett Hidgcock and Steven Stredwick were best afield. Endeavour Hills pecked away at Lyndhurst to take a comfortable 12.19 (91) to 4.5 (29) triumph on the back of hard work from Shaun Richards, Nick Gay and the multiple goal-kickers Nathan Strom (three goals), Shane Peake (three goals) and Cedric LeGrand (two goals). Lyndale thrashed Sandown by 81 as Trevor Kumetaitis (nine goals) filled up a bag and then some. Kane D’Atri, Jordan Waite (three goals) and Sandringham Dragon Perry Lewis-Smith were in the best for the Cobras. Dandenong was gallant against South Yarra, downed 8.7 (55) to 11.14 (80) as Jarod Van Mourik generated plenty of touches alongside Ali Hussani (three goals) and Stephen Young (two goals).

Springvale White Eagles dandy win By JARROD POTTER NPL 2 EAST - ROUND 9 OIL and water. Chalk and cheese. Springvale White Eagles and Dandenong City. There’s no love lost between the cross-town NPL 2 East sides, as the next instalment of their intense rivalry went down to the wire on Saturday afternoon. The outcome was decided in the last 15 minutes; while White Eagles had surged throughout the afternoon - troubling the City defenders and keeper Damir Salcin - the hosts only found the net in the dying stages. Erdem Ozcagi was solid in defence alongside Springvale skipper Dejan Erakovic while Damir Stoilovic threatened to add an eighth goal to his season tally as he worked well up forward. City attacked just as much and had a couple of near-misses as Gonzalo Freddi had a one-on-one through ball which he couldn’t get a foot on, while Andy Jerez and Shaun Filipovic generated opportunity across the afternoon. The final flourish came from 18-yearold Isiah Joseph (77’) who found the back of the net to give White Eagles the points and push season back on track. “It was very good - very exciting for the boys,” Springvale White Eagles technical director Gary Talbot said. “I think they played quite well - did all the things they were asked to do - pushed hard and pressed hard. “Great atmosphere and it’s what’s needed to give the club that little bit of a lift and get some of those old supporters to come back down.” City was well served by Halil Gur at the back and Freddi in attack while Dario Matkovic had his head over the ball all day and copped a few whacks in the process. The win pushes Springvale White Eagles up to eighth on the ladder before a massive match against Moreland Zebras, while Dandenong City sits just above

Rays ram home victory

Springvale White Eagles Erdem Ozcagi keeps an eye on the ball in the Picture: JARROD POTTER hosts’ 1-0 win over Dandenong City. 153312 them in seventh. “That’ll be a tough game against Moreland Zebras - they’re sitting on top of the other conference- but I’m sure the boys will rise to the challenge,” Talbot said. “We’ve been unlucky early in the season - either in front or level going into the 90th minute and the game turns around in the final few minutes. “If we get those points, things would be a lot different and confidence would be a lot higher, but we’re still pushing ahead.” Dandenong Thunder played Kingston City on Monday night in a first-versussecond showdown. Thunder will travel to Moreland City this week on Saturday while Dandenong City hosts Sunshine George Cross.

In the state leagues, South Springvale’s horror season continued with a 0-3 loss to Manningham United. Doveton SC drew with Caulfield United 2-2 - after a Gethin Jones (57’, 62’) double while Noble Park SC thrashed Lyndale United 4-1, Keysborough SC knocked off Dandenong South 2-1, Endeavour United had a scoreless draw with East Brighton United and Endeavour Hills Fire drew with Hampton Park United. Springvale City held on for a 2-2 outcome against Bayside Argonauts, while Harrisfield Hurricanes suffered a threegoal loss against Skye United. Chelsea FC rounded out the local results, destroyeing White Star Dandenong 6-1 in their State League 5 South clash.

TAC CUP - ROUND 4 BATTERED, bruised but most importantly, not beaten. Every obstacle was thrown at the Dandenong Stingrays, as unavailable players and injuries forced them to run it out two-men down . With its depth well and truly tested in a trying day on-field, the result speaks for itself as Dandenong fought back against NSW/ACT to take its fourth win from as many TAC Cup starts in the 15-point win. Callum White (hamstring) and Mason De Wit (finger) left the game early and tested the fitness limits of the Stingrays’ cadre. But it didn’t affect the Stingrays’ surge through the opening stanzas, but smooth sailing to rough seas in the blink of an eye at Frankston Park, Dandenong was coasting at times as the challenges proved minor distractions through three-quarter-time as Dandenong built a 13-point lead on the back of exceptional work from the three Toms - Thomas Jok, Tom De Koning and Tommy Glen. Starting 2016 even better than he finished 2015, Glen in particular showed the full extent of his range

and versatility. Now a fixture inside the Stingrays’ centre, Glen had countless clearances and racked up the stats to give the gaggle of recruiters plenty to jot down and take back to their AFL clubs. Glen in tandem with Mitch McCarthy, Max Kleverkamp and Myles Poholke, led from the front as the centre-four had it on a string for the most part against the Rams, The visitors seized on a brief lapse across the Dandenong ranks through the fourth term though - setting the stage for a thrilling finish. The back-line faced the brunt of the Rams’ force as mistakes piled up and gave the visitors the lead. But as he’s done throughout the first month of his TAC Cup career, Sam Fowler (five goals) once again captivated the crowd. Josh Battle (four goals) made his TAC Cup return count. After a week off from school football, the big forward gave his all for the Rays attack and helped the side overcome the Rams. Dandenong heads across to Western Jets on Sunday.

Blake shoots at Big V TAKING his game to new levels, local basketballer Blake Taylor is on the fast-track to success after earning his first major Victorian jersey. The long-time Casey Cavaliers player made the switch to Dandenong Rangers Under 16s team in recent seasons and has loved every second at his new club. That switch has opened the door for Taylor, including his side qualifying for the Victorian Championship and being on the verge of qualifying for the National Junior Classic, and helped him move towards the Big V. He’ll trade the Dandenong jumper for a representative jersey though – as Taylor, 14, frm Narre Warren South, will represent Victoria’s metropolitan region later this year. Such is the two-guard’s talent that he’s been picked for the Basketball Victoria Under 16 Vic Metro team, set to head off to Kilsyth for the Under 16 national championships in July. “I’d made other Vic Metro teams, but they’re more development teams I guess and not a state team as such,” Taylor said. “I’m pretty proud – it’s obviously a big accomplishment and an honour to be in the team really.” “I’m a shooting guard, two man, and basically a shooter – sit me in the corner – love to shoot from the corner – and occasionally when needed I run the point guard or three-man, but mainly the two.” With a power packed arsenal assembled from across the state, Taylor believes the Vic Metro squad has enough in the tank to bring another title back to Victoria. “It’s a good group of kids and we’ve got a fairly good team chemistry and should do quite well I think,” Taylor said. In 2015 he made the switch to the green-andgold and everything is going peachy for the junior guard, who thinks the side is capable of making the Classic. “I kind of wanted a change, play with some other players as Dandenong has some great players I wanted to play with,” Taylor said. “We’re hoping to go to the Junior Classic – sitting fourth or fifth in the pool – there’s a little bit more to go but fingers crossed.”
