Dog day afternoon A BLIND Bight man’s shotgun rampage left local residents terrified, drawing a police helicopter to the sleepy seaside town. At issue was a long-standing neighbourhood dispute involving the welfare of more than 20 chained and hidden dogs, swarming with fleas, off Wild Duck Way. A Blind Bight man in his thirties allegedly shot at nearby property facades after discovering police, RSPCA and a Casey council by-laws officer had searched the family farm on Friday 15 April. Founder of Oscar’s Law, Debra Tranter was tipped off by an anonymous source close to six weeks ago and notified the RSPCA on Thursday 14 April. Ms Tranter and her team of two entered the property up to eight times in March and planted hidden cameras, capturing images of the dogs. “I want the dogs out of there, it’s absolutely barbaric for someone to chain up dogs and accept that it’s their way of life,” Ms Tranter said. “All day they just scratch at their skin until it bleeds - they are all suffering from skin infections.” The RSPCA did not seize any of the dogs on the day but have issued notices to comply, which require the animal owner to rectify welfare concerns. However later that evening the owner took his frustrations out on neighbours. An onlooker described the hourlong incident as “highly stressful”. “Someone could have died, a young lady with a baby is traumatised. “He has absolutely terrorised everyone, some residents have said they saw four helicopters circling the home and he was shooting at trees and onto roofs of houses,” they said. The resident - who wishes to remain anonymous - said the male farmer “went berserk with a shotgun”.
Founder of Oscar’s Law, Debra Tranter said footage she gained from hidden cameras showed the owner topping up water once a day and dry food being thrown on the ground. 153460 Picture: CONTRIBUTED
Ms Tranter said the secluded spot would take the owner 15 minutes to walk to from the Picture: CONTRIBUTED farmhouse. 153460
“He was yelling out foul language and threatening everyone.” Narre Warren Acting Sergeant, Anthony Sanders was called to the tense situation around 6pm. “We were there for hours,” Sgt Sanders said. “I spoke with the man’s father who clarified that people had been on his property without consent or knowledge, we had one helicopter circling above to keep observations.” Sgt Sanders said reports had come

through that there was a “mad man with a gun, and shotgun pellets were raining down on roofs and garages.” Police cordoned off nearby streets and arrested the man at the scene, who assisted police. The man has since been released, pending further investigations. The local eyewitness said police, council and the RSPCA cut locks to gain entry to the rural property. “The dogs are kept in poor state, on very short chains in kennels on
the ground, recently he moved them among the trees at the far end of the property near the sewage pond,” the local said. Ms Tranter confirmed the dogs of a mixture of breeds including American bulldog, pitbull and Staffordshire bull terrier were chained to trees and poles on two-metre leads. It’s believed noise and constant barking, coming from the Blind Bight farm, is an ongoing source of angst for residents in adjacent estates.

RSPCA inspectors are continuing to investigate and communicate with the owner about compliance with their notice, but Ms Tranter is taking the matter further. She said she would use the case to highlight much-needed legislative amendments around the chaining of dogs and write to the Minister for Agriculture, Jaala Pulford. “Unfortunately it’s not illegal to chain dogs, so just chaining a dog is not a violation of the law,” she said.

Daylight robbery case By GEORGIA WESTGARTH A GOOD Samaritan was punched, kicked and bashed in broad daylight behind Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre after he was asked to give directions. Narre Warren's Detective Matt Davey described the street robbery as a “serious assault.” “He was a genuine victim, he really tried to help the offender out and has sustained nasty injuries.” The shocking premeditated street attack occurred on the corner of Cranbourne Drive and McLaren Avenue on Saturday 23 April at 2.30pm. And it has left the male victim with
three broken ribs, a broken nose and fractured cheekbone. Det Davey said the key offender, described as Asian in appearance with a slim build, in his late teens to early twenties approached the victim, while his accomplices waited in a nearby car. “A white Audi Q3 was on the corner with two people inside, while the third offender waited on the corner,” he said. “He approached the victim walking to the shops and asked for directions to William Street. “Pulling out his phone with a map on it, the victim explained and offered the man to follow him as he was walking that way. “But as the victim turned away he
was punched a few times to the back of the head.” Det Davey said the pair dropped to the ground and wrestled but the young thief managed to steal the man’s phone and wallet. A small amount of cash was stolen as well as the victim's Medicare card and bank card. “At this point another offender has got out of the Audi and started kicking the victim in the ribs,” Det Davey said. Due to the location and time of the disturbing violent attack, Det Davey hopes eye witnesses will come forward. “It’s a busy area at the back of the shops,” he said.
“We are aware a taxi was parked on the side of the road on Cranbourne Drive, just a few houses down from the assault and we know the driver was sitting in the car.” Det Davey is urging that taxi driver to come forward. “We think he may have seen something,” he said. The two accomplices are described as Caucasian. “They targeted someone vulnerable and were after a phone and wallet,” Det Davey said. Anyone with information on the serious daylight assault can contact the Narre Warren police station on 9705 3111 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Break-in warning CLYDE homeowners are being warned by police to keep doors, windows and garages locked after another attempted home burglary. Thieves tried to gain entry to a home on Riverstone Boulevard, Clyde North, between 11pm on Saturday 16 April and 7.30am the following day. Substantial damage was done to the rear sliding aluminium windows and fly screen at the rear of the home.
Ram raid leads to dog chase A BOTCHED ram raid attempt left the frontage of a Lynbrook store smashed and a car wedged on a steel bollard. Police were called to the AMX Superstore on the South Gippsland Highway, about 2.30am on Monday 18 April. The offender rammed the shopfront in a GMC utility, with stolen number plates, but failed to gain entry. Police set a tracking dog after the escapee who fled the scene on foot, however the man was not caught. Narre Warren police are urging anyone with information about the crime to make a confidential call to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Feeling the Casey love - complete with hashtag AS THE slogans go, New Yorkers ‘Love NY’ as do the burghers of Frankston love their town. Now add to the list City of Casey - with a social-media hashtag. The pay-it-forward campaign Casey Love This City is the brainchild of Casey City Church pastor Larry Sebastian and wife Christa. Mr Sebastian hopes this goodwill message for random acts of kindness - which has the blessing of Casey Council - is about to go viral. Casey, with its high levels of family
violence, suicide and vandalism, is symptomatic of something wrong in the social fabric. There’s a lack of respect for ourselves, others and where we live, he said. “(Love this City) promotes that each one of us have a significant part in our city. “When we see someone in difficulty, we want to do something about it - those values have been lost.” One example is embracing the wave of migrants settling in Casey, some fleeing violence and adjusting to new freedoms.
Helping others is not a one-way street, though, Mr Sebastian said. “They must be willing to embrace our values and what we’re really all about. “But we can’t tell someone coming in that you should follow us. We need to come alongside them.” As for what Mr Sebastian loves about Casey, he talks of the great facilities, council leaders, services and the mix of cultures in the community. At the forefront of the campaign will be its ambassador and former Casey mayor Shar Balmes.

Ms Balmes said she didn’t have to think twice in accepting the role. Those were values she already held dear, she said. Mr Sebastian knows this is a long haul. The next step was to promote concrete examples of what people could do in their neighbourhoods and workplaces and post videos on social media that asks random people what love looks like to them. Its success may be difficult to measure. As Mr Sebastian puts it, this is just one of the vehicles to turn things around.

Special memories By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ON THE Battle of Somme centenary, Tooradin’s Charlie Adams paid tribute to his father who fought on the muddy banks 100 years ago. Albert Adams, a Dalmore farmer, was lucky enough to make it home from his World War I posts in Egypt and France. His son, Charlie, 93, also a farmer, emotionally remembers his father every year at the Tooradin Anzac service. “My Dad was in the AIF (Australian Imperial Forces). He fought in the big battle,” Charlie said. A Tooradin local of 30 years, Charlie laid a floral wreath on behalf of the Tooradin, Dalmore and Coastal Villages communities in front of a crowd of hundreds. Forty names of local men lost at war echoed through the crowd before the Last Post tingled down spines and a minute of silence enveloped the crowd. Down the road at Clydesdale Square, the Dandenong Cranbourne RSL Sub Branch reminded thousands of people at its memorial service of the “turban wearing” Sikh soldiers who fought alongside Anzac Diggers. The RSL’s Bill Shepherd enlightened the crowd of the 83,005 Sikh soldiers killed at war and the 109,045 wounded, according to a script provided by the Sikh community. In special attendance was 97-yearold veteran Fred Crane, who has marched to the Shrine of Remembrance at Melbourne’s dawn service for the past 42 years. A part of the 2/21st Battalion of the Gull Force, Mr Crane fought in the Laha Ambon battle of WWII and said the Cranbourne turn out of local families and children was “just marvellous.”
Tooradin Primary School girls show off their vocals with the Australian National Anthem.
Left: Secondary school students from across Casey honoured Diggers with floral tributes. "Lest we forget" rang out through Clydesdale Square. “I was one of three men to come home,” he said. Mr Crane, from Cranbourne North, was wheeled into the service by local friend, Mick Vancuylenburg and his family who had made a worthy call for help, before one of the nation’s most treasured days. Mr Vancuylenburg had called radio station SEN to make sure Mr Crane had a brand new suit to wear for the occasion. “SEN was fantastic - we had a suit donated from Sires Menswear,” Mr Vancuylenburg said, smiling.

“You have not endeared yourself in making these comments.” Cr Aziz took aim at the “rubbish” published by media that the council had bowed to pressure from fringe political and ideological groups. He said those groups - both left and right - had been “wasting their time”. It was only Casey’s residents that had been heard. Four Oaks Ward councillor Rafal Kaplon emphasised the planning reasons for the decision - the development’s scale and intensity in the rural foothills and green wedge area, as well as VicRoads’ objections to its traffic impact. The 16-metre minaret would be an “overbearing” presence from various vantage points, Cr Kaplon said. The significant non-urban Narre Warren North area should be regarded as a “finite resource” that would
be “lost forever” if developed. His message was undercut by fellow ward councillor and Rise Up Australia identity Rosalie Crestani, who held up posters to the gallery during the vote. One of her posters stated: “Narre Warren North residents said to me: radicalisation and terrorism risks of Islamic mosques should be considering in decision making.” Cr Crestani later told Star News she created the posters because she wasn’t allowed to raise these questions at the meeting. She said chanting protesters didn’t know the meaning of racism. “Racism doesn’t have anything to do with Islam. It’s not a race, it’s an ideology.” Narre North residents later told Star News that their objections were based on conserving their town’s ru-
ral character and were offended with being branded as racists. “It wouldn’t matter if it was a church or a mosque,” several told Star News. A Casey resident who supported the mosque said she wanted peace and unity in Australia. “I want my daughter to grow up in a faith where she’s not regarded as evil. “We have the same values as anyone else.” Saarban Islamic Trust spokesman Saeed Muhammad said Cr Aziz’s condemnation of the trust was “overly aggressive”. “He seemed to stress the point that we will challenge you.” The trust is expected to challenge the council’s decision at VCAT.
1176287-CG11-15
CASEY’S Mayor Sam Aziz denied the council caved in to Islamophobic elements as a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North was rejected amid vocal protests at a council meeting on 26 April. A prominent police and security detail kept watch as an overflow of mosque supporters raised posters decrying fascism or with slogans such as “Mosque: Yes. Racism: No.” After the council’s unanimous rejection of the 457-person mosque at 365-367 Belgrave-Hallam Road, a chant of “The mosque is welcome, racists are not” rang through the public gallery and out the door. There was no hint of Bendigolike violence between a staunch and largely-silent residents group who applauded the council’s decision and the protestors. At the meeting, the council vowed to throw “every resource” at defending its decision at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Supreme Court, if the proponent Saarban Islamic Trust appeals. Cr Aziz told the meeting that this was “one of the most significant” planning decisions in recent Casey history because of the impact on resident amenity and the enivironment as well as more than 1000 “legitimate” objections from Casey residents. He thanked Casey’s residents who objected respectfully and with “genuine concern” but was disappointed with the applicant for his “unfounded comments” in the media. “For you to be shocked by the content of the report is at best mischievous or at worst malicious.

I WAS bemused to once again read in the latest edition of City News that Casey council has applied to the Essential Services Commission to ‘vary’ (why not actually say ‘increase’) the 2.5 per cent rate cap. And, once again, Casey council continues to try and justify this increase with the excuse of ‘much needed infrastructure because our city’s growth is ‘unprecedented’. Well I won’t disagree with you on that point but can you please explain why in City News it states on page three that, and I quote, “our residents have made a few things clear: they understand that rates need to have reasonable rises”. Can you please tell me which residents you are referring to? Certainly no-one I happen to know or have spoken to. Oh, of course, you must mean all those employees at Casey council who are earning ridiculously exorbitant salaries paid for by none other than, you guessed it, us - your hard-working ratepayers! I realise Casey has grown at an exponential rate in the last few years; you only need to drive past Casey Race in Cranbourne to appreciate how rapidly that area has developed. I can only imagine the amount of money Casey council currently makes considering how over populated that area is becoming. What frustrates me the most is in the City News it states (again on page three) that “today’s children are tomorrow’s employers and home owners”. “We’re investing in a city that meets the needs of all residents at every stage of life, now and in the future.” Well, you know what, you’re not meeting my family’s needs. If you truly believe Casey should be investing our children’s future, why is there only one government secondary school in our zone, that being P-12. Yet almost every time I turn a corner, up pops another shopping complex. Obviously Casey council regards investing in the retail sector a more profitable and worthwhile venture than investing in our children’s future education. Why does Casey continually overlook the importance of providing more choices for families with school aged children who are living in Narre Warren South and cannot afford private education. Anyway, just to let you know, I will follow up this email with one to the ESC together with a copy of our latest rate statement. That way they can see for themselves what you ‘really’ charge Casey ratepayers. Dyllon Juriansz, Narre Warren South.

THE article Booze Super Slam (News, 21 April) highlights an issue that is of greater importance than almost any other. Casey mayor Sam Aziz should be congratulated for his strong stance against the opening of yet another booze outlet in the city of Casey! I sincerely hope that more people will support the mayor in this matter. Of the many drugs available these days, alcohol is by far the worst - quite possibly worse than all the others together! Sadly most people don’t realise - or even refuse to acknowledge - that alcohol is a drug. A term often used these days is ‘alcohol and drugs’. This reinforces in people’s minds the false presumption that alcohol is not a drug. The more accurate term we should use is ‘alcohol and other drugs’. Bruce Rayment, Cranbourne East.

Writing on the walls PLEASE forgive me as I don’t mean to regularly write to the letters column regarding Mayor Aziz but he brings it upon himself. As the president of the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association, I have to condemn the $12,000 spending of ratepayers’ money on billboards to be placed on the Monash Freeway for residents to report graffiti to VicRoads. At the last state election, council spent $10,000 on billboards to support the EastWest tunnel which is 45km away from Casey and what did we get from it? Nothing. I am happy to talk with the management of VicRoads myself and report back to the mayor as there is a communication breakdown between council and VicRoads. I will also invite the Roads Minister Luke Donnellan MP to the meeting. The council may want to use the savings to control alcohol abuse in Cranbourne East as Mr Donnellan pointed out in his TV and radio interviews. Rex Flannery, Narre Warren South.

Socially speaking Relationship program gets little respect It is an anti-family violence program. It’s aimed at preventing violence against women by promoting respect toward women. Crystal Bruton, via Facebook. Communistic approach. She is a bit of a moron, isn’t she? Our council are varying degrees of right-wing Christians who are happy to have cap-in-hand toward the State Government for funding the folly that is Bunjil, yet will disregard programs outside of their neat ideological bubble. For shame. Damian Chapman, via Facebook. It makes sense in this day and age to have an anti-family violence program instead, great work. Jo Blanch, via Facebook. Shots fired in Blind Bight Ahhhh, so that explains why the police helicopter and cars were everywhere ... Frank Crompton, via Facebook.

Sex education debate hots up By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS
Rosalie Crestani has been slammed by a Greens MP and an anti-family violence group. models, they turn to popular culture - music, film, television, video games and pornography - to get information about relationships, sex, and the way men and women, boys and girls are supposed to act.” She said young people had access to a widening array of negative messages on sex and relationships in popular culture and online. Young males were first accessing porn as young as 9 years old, Ms Barry said. “Respectful relationships education gives young people the skills to identify, critique and reject such sexualisation and foster healthy personal identities based on the principles of respect and equality. It uses age-appropriate materials and proven teaching techniques.”
Ms Barry said a recent Royal Commission on family violence recommended the rollout of the schools program after a successful 12-month pilot. “We can continue down the path of letting young people work out how they feel about sex and relationships guided only by damaging influences and the advice of their peers. "Or we can do what the evidence says works.” Greens state MP Nina Springle was also critical of Cr Crestani, who “clearly doesn’t get” the program. “The reality is that our children are being exposed to shocking stuff through the internet and mainstream advertising, despite our best efforts as parents. “The implication of Councillor Crestani’s opinion is that children continue to be exposed to this without being given the tools to think about the messages they’re receiving about gender.” Despite parents feeling “uneasy” about the content, the classroom was the best place for “evidence-based discussion”, Ms Springle said. “It’s disappointing that biased and blinkered views like Councillor Crestani’s get a run while thousands of experts are working tirelessly to actually introduce evidence-based changes that will prevent family violence.”

A GROUP advocating for an end to family violence has attacked a Casey councillor’s criticisms of a respectful-relationships schools program. Our Watch chief executive Mary Barry said it was “absurd” of Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani to suggest that the state’s Building Respectful Relationships program was sexualising children. “This confuses the problem with the solution.” At a meeting on 19 April, Casey councillors almost unanimously backed Cr Crestani’s motion against the program. Cr Crestani described the program in public schools as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” that promoted premature sexualising of young people, citing Casey Multifaith Networks’ concerns about explicit content. “The community from so many walks of life have expressed outrage.” It was a “sexually political agenda”, akin to a “communistic approach of having the child controlled by the state”, Cr Crestani said. Ms Barry said the program taught young people to reject aggressive behaviour, sexualisation, discrimination and gender stereotyping. “Young people have told us that due to a lack of guidance from parents, teachers and role

DID YOU KNOW
VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.
If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.
On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.
Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.
If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.

Pushing for a road upgrade By ALANA MITCHELSON

THE City of Casey and Cardinia Shire have joined forces to lobby for $190 million of federal funding to begin the duplication and extension of Thompsons Road. The Star News Group backed joint campaign aims to make Thompsons Road an alternative east-west thoroughfare to relieve congestion on the Monash Freeway. The proposal includes an upgrade of the Thompsons Road and Western Port Highway intersection to a grade separated interchange, the duplication of Thompsons Road from Dandenong-Frankston Road to Berwick-Cranbourne Road and the extension of Thompsons Road from Berwick-Cranbourne Road to Cardinia Road with plans for future extension to reach Healesville-Kooweerup Road. The project is part of the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA)’s Fund Our Future campaign, which calls for a dedicated national infrastructure fund in the upcoming Federal Budget to benefit Australia’s most under pressure growth corridors, focusing on roads, public transport and health. Star News is also getting behind the initiative with a series of stories set to appear online and in the printed edition of this newspaper in the lead up to the Federal Election.
Casey mayor Sam Aziz said work to increase the capacity of Thompsons Road was vital to the economic future of the region. “Thompsons Road is council’s number one priority on its arterial roads advocacy program for both duplication and intersection upgrades,“ he said. “Most Casey residents are familiar with the notorious roundabout at Western Port Highway/Thompsons Road with vehicles queuing in excess of one kilometre in any of the approach directions during peak times. “A fully constructed Thompsons Road from Lyndhurst to Officer South would provide a new high capacity east-west freight and logistics corridor.“ In its pre-budged submission the NGAA wrote that continued under-investment would be “catastrophic“. “Investment would provide significant jobs creation, higher tax revenues and a permanent boost to national GDP,“ the submission read. “Rural and regional areas have been recognised through dedicated funding, but outer growth area population hotspots have never benefitted from this type of approach.
World’s
“Continued underinvestment will be catastrophic personally and for communities and businesses more broadly: increased stress, time wasted in traffic, fewer jobs and social isolation leading to divided communities.“ A SGS Economics and Planning analysis showed that an annual investment of about $5 billion over the next 15 years was required to meet the infrastructure needs of the growing population in these areas. Casey alone is growing by 120 people a week and will be home to 490,000 residents by 2041. It is Victoria’s largest municipality with 300,000 residents. More than 120 people move in each week, with more than 490,000 residents projected by 2041. Cr Aziz said new analysis showed five million Australians - and counting - lack access to adequate roads, public transport and health facilities in the fastgrowing suburbs on the outskirts of capital cities. “With 70 per cent of Casey residents leaving the municipality each day for work, council is working to stimulate investment in this corridor to create local jobs for local people. The extension of Thompsons Road is vital to this, unlocking significant employment land to support the creation of 100,000 jobs in the region.” Support the campaign at www.fundourfuture.info/actnow/

FIVE Apex arrests made over the weekend haven’t slowed down the violent south east gang. The infamous criminals viciously attacked a driver with a baseball bat before using his Mercedes Benz to invade a home in Cranbourne on Anzac Day (Monday 25 April). The frightening carjacking on Toorak Road in Toorak comes after five males aged between 16 and 19 were arrested and interviewed over two burglaries at homes in Ormond and Brighton East on Saturday 23 April. The inner city home invasions left occupants at both addresses with bruising and abrasions, after they were allegedly assaulted by the gang members. Taskforce Tense, set up in November last year to monitor the ethnic gang, executed warrants at addresses in Cranbourne and Hampton Park later that Saturday night. Police allegedly uncovered a stolen BMW, Honda CRV, mobile phones and a computer. The young males were arrested and interviewed over the two burglaries. Two have been charged with aggravated burglary, assault, car theft, handling stolen goods and possessing the proceeds of crime. The 17-year-old youth is facing the same charges, remanded to appear in the children’s court. Another 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old youth have
Despite plenty of police attention, the Apex gang just won't stop. been released pending further inquiries. The armed carjacking involving an innocent 29-yearold Avondale Heights man, who pulled over his Mercedes Benz to send a text message, has prompted him to speak out on social media. Michael Jean-Pierre Tallal posted to the Pakenham Crime and Theft Facebook page urging drivers to be vigilant and “call the police before exiting your car”. Mr Tallal wrote: “As I was driving home ... a car hit me from behind.” “As I got out of my car to inspect the damage, five to six people got out of the car and assaulted me with a baseball bat. “They took my car keys, made me unlock and clear my phone. I was hit numerous times with the baseball bat. My glasses smashed along with my watch as I was attempting to shield my face. The police have advised me that this is a known gang to them committing these crimes all over Melbourne. “Four of the assailants were
of African descent and two were Islanders. “By the time I was released from hospital, numerous other crimes were committed using my car in Cranbourne and Vermont South. According to the police this gang is targeting new Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Lexus and VW cars.” Police believe Mr Tallal’s car was used to commit an aggravated burglary at Valencia Circuit in Cranbourne about 3.45am on Monday 25 April. A police statement read that four to five males kicked the front door in and stole a number of items before being confronted by one of the occupants, who had armed himself with a baseball bat. The males, perceived to be of African and Islander/Maori appearance, fled the scene in awaiting cars, possibly a white sports car and a grey hatchback. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic. com.au

A budget bonanza By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

CASEY drivers are the big winners in the State Budget, with major traffic congestion funding injections and upgrades to train station car parking. The Victorian Budget, announced on Wednesday 27 April, has delivered more than $20 million to expand station car parks in the outer-suburbs of Melbourne. This investment includes up to 50 extra spaces at Hallam Station and 110 at the notoriously full Berwick Station. Lyndhurst and Lynbrook residents are set to be reconnected with a $40 million investment to duplicate 1.2 kilometres of Hallam Road between Ormond Road and the South Gippsland Highway.
The level crossing at Evans Road will be re-opened after it was closed in 2005 due to safety concerns, with the intersection of South Gippsland Highway, Hallam Road and Evans Road receiving a major upgrade. A huge funding boost has been given to duplicate Thompsons Road between South Gippsland Highway and Marriott Boulevard. On top of the $79.4 million funding to remove the level crossing at Merinda Park railway station the State Government has provided a whopping $154.5 million to upgrade Thompsons Road. Two lanes will be built in each direction on Thompsons Road and the existing roundabout at the Western Port Highway intersection will be replaced with traffic lights, which
is expected to reduce travel delays by 10 minutes. Cracking down on public safety concerns surrounding the young Apex gang, who have terrorised the Casey community for nine months, the budget has delivered a $596 million Public Safety Package. The investment includes funding for 300 frontline police who will be deployed across Victoria and 30 new officers and two support personnel who will join the anti-gang and illicit trafficking teams. Cranbourne Secondary College has also come out on top with $9 million to upgrade their ageing facilities. Berwick’s Kambrya College has also taken a $3 million chunk out of the State Budget to build a multi-
purpose facility to cater for rising student numbers. And Casey Mayor Sam Aziz has received a major win with a cash injection of $300,000 for graffiti removal works along the Monash Freeway. Casey Hospital patients have also benefited from the State Budget with an elective surgery funding boost. The hospital is being funded for a new high-acuity unit for severely ill patients as well as getting a share of a state-wide $335 million injection for elective surgeries and capital works over four years. The government states the funding for new beds, theatres and equipment will help nearly 200,000 Victorians get elective surgery faster.

It’s None Of Our Business But ... FROM Cranbourne with love! Paintings by Zoe Panagiotopoulos were presented to the Honorary Consul-General of France Myriam BoisbouvierWylie at the Cranbourne RSL this month. The paintings are set to get shipped over to Villers Bretonneux, France, to go on display at the Sir John Monash Centre in 2018. The paintings are fittingly titled Somme Reverie and God Speed as this Anzac Day marked the centenary of the Battle of Somme.
WAS a Casey councillor striving for local music cred or did they just make a faux pas? For some reason the councillor kept referring to the CBD as the “CDB” during a recent council meeting. Star News is reliably told the CDB was a popular band hailing from the Dandenong region. So kudos for the hip music plug, councillor - whether advertent or not.
SEEMS like some councillors are shying away from splurging on artworks for the under-construction Bunjil Place regional art gallery. Debate raged on the council’s art acquisition policy with some councillors dead against paying for artworks to display in the $126 million cultural precinct. Under the policy, the gallery can be filled by travelling exhibitions, loaned works from large galleries and private collections and a trust fund built at least in part by benefactors. Any artworks purchases have to be approved by councillors. Sure to inspire debate as colourful as a Jackson Pollock. NOT a great faith in media from reps of both sides of the mosque debate at a council meeting on 26 April. Star’s reporter was continually quizzed on his identity by the public outside the civic centre. Upon revealing his credentials, he was greeted with reactions ranging from disgust to a friendly pat in the shoulder. On top of that, The Age copped a big spray from mayor Sam Aziz for its reportage of the mosque proponent’s claim that the council caved into xenophobic elements on the issue.
Your friends will be GREEN with envy....

THE inaugural Carol Friday Scholarship for Excellence has been awarded to maternal and child health nurse Michelle Richardson. The scholarship was established in the name of Carol Friday, the dedicated Victorian MCH nurse who passed away, alongside her son Grieg, aboard Germanwings flight 4U 9525. Carol was a MCH nurse in Casey at the time of her death. Carol’s husband David Friday and daughter Alex presented Ms Richardson with the award last week. She has worked as a nurse and a midwife across rural and remote areas, including in Aboriginal communities and in Papua New Guinea. The scholarship will allow Ms Richardson to complete a master’s degree at La Trobe University.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Students try new skill set By GEORGIA WESTGARTH TRADESMEN talking trades stole the show at this year’s South East Careers Expo. In its eighth year, the try a trade and careers day on Tuesday 19 April had 3000 young and adult learners walk through the Cranbourne Turf Club. Participants could try their hand at bricklaying, dentistry, floristry, auto, carpentry and plumbing among other trades
and SELLEN CEO Andrew Simmons said the high quality displays were “unbelievable”. “We had about 30 schools attend along with mature aged students looking to change careers or courses and migrants from AMES,” Mr Simmons said. “Exhibitors couldn’t believe how many came through and were running out of brochures.” It was the expo’s largest spread of exhibitors, rivalling
the Melbourne Career Expo, Mr Simmons said. “A lot of local schools are coming to us rather than going into the city, because it’s local and a lot of exhibitors are doing the same,” he said. SELLEN hopes to engage more agricultural businesses at their next event, but Mr Simmons said the main thing was the students and “they’re coming in and asking the right questions”.

Entertainment Dining, what’s on, bands and more…
Pipes are calling a victory By ALANA MITCHELSON THE Haileybury Pipes and Drums band have regained their title after defeating their Scotch College rivals at the state championships. Haileybury College clinched victories in both the Juvenile and Grade 4 adult categories this year at Ringwood Highland Gathering earlier this month. Events co-ordinator Sarah Denham said the Pipes and Drums spent hours rehearsing in preparation for the contest. “With the combination of fellowship, talent and hard work, all of their efforts paid
off,” she said. Pipe Major and Year 12 student Thomas Perry said Haileybury had not expected the win. “Band performances are not a question of individual excellence, but are rather a question of teamwork and co-ordination. We really hoped that our teamwork could make the difference. This ethos was reflected in our preparation, where it was about bonding and playing as an integrated unit,” Tom said. “Our pipes stirred, our drums beat, and the Haileybury colours fluttered in the intermittent wind as we stepped off from the starting line.
“We knew the Haileybury Pipes and Drums had come a long way, but the opposition was going to be tough to beat. Our traditional rivals, Scotch College, had an extraordinary few years with plenty of talent, will and discipline. “We knew we had beaten them before and we were determined to give them a run for their money. “When it was announced that we had won the championships, we unleashed a cacophony of celebratory sound that I am sure could be distantly heard in the highlands of Scotland.”
Winners are grinners.

SOUTH EAST strength was brought to international attention recently as power-lifter Martin Nguyen claimed a prestigious ProRawEight title. Nguyen, 23, from Narre Warren South, lifted the best part of one tonne across competition to excel at ProRawEight, part of the recently held Arnold Classic Australia invitational. Differing greatly from weight-lifting, power-lifting is all about the grand total of three events, not one individual lift. With weights added together for the squat, deadlift and bench-press to determine the winner, Nguyen flourished at the international-standard meet to take out the 95kg championship. Nguyen’s efforts - a whopping 842 kilograms combined across the squad (310kg), bench-press (182kg) and deadlift (350kg) - were enough to give him the best win of his power-lifting career so far. “I came first and got all my lifts, so I’m very happy with it,” Nguyen said. “ProRawEight is one of the biggest competitions in Australia and it’s invite only - not just anybody can compete and only the best lifters in each category can compete. “Getting invited to compete in one of those is quite prestigious in Australia, as there aren’t many comps like that.” Even the ProRawEight trophy is an

Nguyen, who owns the power-lifting gym Cranbourne Iron Strength Gym in Station Street, Cranbourne, is one of the young rising stars in the sport, which he found his way into by chance. “I’ve been power-lifting, this is my fifth year now and I’m really enjoying it - I’ve probably done seven comps in that
time,” Nguyen said. “Originally I was just lifting weights at my school gym, and then I kept being interested in lifting weights and found a gym called PTC. “So I went to PTC and the owner there convinced me to compete, I competed once and I loved it and have been training for it ever since.” Even after five years in the sport, Nguyen is one of the younger men on the circuit and encouraged anyone interested in power-lifting to take their time and grow into the sport, not push too hard and flame out early. “Make sure you find a good gym, find a good strength or power-lifting gym and just stick with it for a very long time,” Nguyen said. “Not necessarily getting carried away with the weights or what you’re lifting, but just doing it consistently do it properly, learn to take the time, see the big picture and do it for a very long time. “With power-lifting, the strongest power-lifters are generally 35-40 years old, so if you start training when you’re a teen or in your early 20s, just know that you’ve got 15-20 good years of training in you.” Nguyen will now train up for the Melbourne Cup held later this year. He wanted to thank his wife Steph for her immeasurable support of his powerlifting and the gym. For more information on Nguyen’s power-lifting gym, visit the Facebook page “Cranbourne Iron Strength Gym”.

Scorpions lose winning tempo Justin Plapp urges his charges to stay on course from his quartertime huddle.
By JARROD POTTER VFL - ROUND 3 CASEY Scorpions’ 2016 campaign suffered its first blemish. After two rounds flying on top of the VFL ladder, Williamstown took to the Saturday night outing at Casey Fields with gusto. A goal-for-goal first term shoot out left the match up in the air as former Dandenong Stingray Liam Hulett (four goals) snagged the first two for Casey - kicking a textbook goal from a strong mark followed by some nimble ground level work. From missing most of 2015 to getting his ticket to the AFL, Hulett has not taken a step backwards this season as he presents prominently in the forward line and chips in with the ruck duties. The problems started piling up for Casey in the second term as Williamstown’s fast-paced football caused some headaches. The run-and-carry evaporated as the visitors continued their surge - booting five goals to two to take a comfortable 26-point gap into the main break. Three quick goals after the resumption to Hulett, Jack Grimes and Max King gave the Scorpions’ faithful something to cheer about, but the tempo soon shifted back into the Gulls’ favour. Casey endured the brunt of Williamstown’s attack through the dy-

ing stages of the third term, but there wasn’t enough in the tank to mount a comeback. After he was banged up in round one, Jack Trengove made his time on field count, racking up 30 possessions alongside Vic Michie (28 possessions) and in probably the last time he’ll be seen at Casey for a while - Christian Petracca (26 possessions). Delisted St Kilda forward Arryn Siposs (four goals) loved his return to the south east as the former Beaconsfield footballer took everything lace out in the Seagulls’ square. Doveton/Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Lachie Batten earned his first call up to the senior ranks, playing as the 23rd man and roaming across the field in a promising first outing.

Locals flying high By JARROD POTTER SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND 3 THERE’S a great local flavour to top off the Southern Football League Division 3 ladder, with Doveton Eagles, Hallam and Endeavour Hills all flying high. Hallam remains undefeated after a nail-biting nine-point win over Moorabbin. Scott Slater’s charges rallied to claim their biggest scalp yet this season, knocking over a former grand finalist 16.12(108) to 15.9(99) in an early season shoot-out. Hallam’s in-and-under work, especially from midfielders Matt Neve and Manny Peresso, was too much for the Kangaroos to halt, as the Hawks’ insiders racked up the touches and delivered it lace-out to the likes of Phillip Ward (five goals) and Shane Thomas (four goals). The midfield had a secret weapon they unleashed on Saturday to great effect; Dandenong Stingrays alumnus Jayden Bubb made his Hallam debut, after he switched back to football after a brief stint playing SEABL basketball with the Dandenong Rangers this year. Bubb’s imposing 204cm frame was a nightmare for the Moorabbin ruck stocks to handle and as such the sporting all-rounder fed it at will to the midfielders and will continue to do so every time the Frankston Dolphins’ VFL side has a bye - like the one the development team had this weekend. The high flying Hawks now battle South Yarra at home from 2.15pm on Saturday in battle between two top-six sides. Doveton Eagles continued to stand
Hallam skipper Manny Peresso had it on a string yet again in the side's best win yet - a nine-point triumph over Moorabbin. 152663 Picture: JARROD POTTER on top of the ladder, as they punished the visiting Carrum Patterson Lakes to the tune of 115 points. Peter Dye (five goals) excelled in another forward-line rampage while Enayte Samadi, Brett Hidgcock and Steven Stredwick were the Eagles’ best afield. Endeavour Hills pecked away at Lyndhurst to take a comfortable 12.19(91) to 4.5(29) triumph on the back of hard work from Shaun Richards, Nick Gay and the multiple goalkickers Nathan Strom (three goals), Shane Peake (three goals) and Cedric LeGrand (two goals). In Division 2, Keysborough’s credentials took another battering, as the Burra was belted by Port Melbourne Colts to the tune of 114 points. Ruckman Bryce Sutton (three goals) went forward to create something for the visitors while Danny Morland and Brandon Mather also flew the flag.

Great support for President Greg By DAVID NAGEL THE thoughts and prayers of all involved in the South East Football Netball League are with Tooradin-Dalmore president Greg Kelly as he recovers from a serious car accident last week. Seagulls’ vice-president Jeremy Knight said news of the accident had hit the club hard. “Greg’s such an important part of our footy club, and having taking over as president this year he’s been 100 per cent fullon and given his total commitment to the club,” Knight said. “It was a real shock to the system for all of us here at Tooradin. The important thing for us was to understand Greg’s health situation first and fore-
most. And whilst he’s had a significant operation, he’s got his wits about him, he’s still talking about the footy club, he’s still involved, and we’re just here for him and his family for as long as it takes for him to recover.” Kelly has had surgery to remove part of his lower leg, with further trauma to the top of his leg and chest. He is now out of ICU and into the main ward and setting his sights on recovery. Knight said the support of the local community had been amazing. “From the moment people found out the footy and netball community has been fantastic,” he said. “Liz (Triffitt) at SEFNL
and all the clubs have been really supportive, particularly the Cranbourne Football Club and its president Shane Baker. We couldn’t have asked for more from Cranbourne to tell you the truth. The camaraderie is amazing, it’s a community sport and the community has really rallied around our club and the Kelly family in a time of need.” Tooradin hosted Cranbourne in the annual Anzac Day clash on Monday, with Greg’s son Jordan playing in the reserves after addressing the players at Thursday on night training. “He spoke about it with his dad and they decided that Jordan should play -he just wants to be around his mates right now,” Knight said.

Magpies on track By DAVID NAGEL A SENSE of nationalistic pride has swept across the South East Football Netball League as the Anzac Day weekend gave us a much clearer picture of the season ahead. We already knew that Berwick and Cranbourne were the pace-setters, but the way they despatched of two of the up-and-coming challengers in Doveton and Tooradin on the weekend has put a huge exclamation mark on that point. So who has emerged from the pack? Narre Warren was the big mover in the confidence stakes on the weekend, a 47-point victory over Beaconsfield proving that newcoach Heath Black has the Maggies on the right track. But for all other finals aspirants, Beaconsfield, Doveton, Pakenham and Tooradin, it was a weekend when reality really did hit home. The previously unbeaten Doves
showed typical fight in the first half, but were then blown away by a verywell-oiled Berwick machine that purred like clockwork in the third term. The Wickers kicked 7.2 to 2.4 in the ‘premiership quarter’ to take a 39-point lead to the final break. “I was really happy with how the boys responded after half time, they were hungry to make amends and that’s a promising sign,” said Berwick coach Rhys Nisbet. “We haven’t put a full four quarters together yet but hopefully that will come soon.” The Wickers stretched the margin to 48 by the final siren, with five goals to Ben Kearns and three to Mark Weekes the highlights up forward. Defenders Michael Riseley, Jo West and Ryan Hillard were also influential, while Madi Andrews and Jake Wilson were prominent through the midfield. Nick Battle kicked three and champion Russ Gabriel was dominant in the ruck for the Doves.
Narre Warren gave Beaconsfield a five-goal start at Holm Park Reserve but kicked 14 goals to two after quarter time for an eight-goal victory. Damian Collins did a great job of tagging Beaconsfield star Daniel Mislicki, who was celebrating his 250th senior game, while Darren Sheen’s five goals were the key feature up forward. Beau Dowler kicked five for the Eagles, who are struggling to find other avenues to goal. One team that had no such problem was Officer, who caused the first eye-brow raiser of the season with a six-point victory over Pakenham at Starling Road. Matty Clarke booted six for the Kangaroos while veteran Ben Tivendale had a field day on centre wing, capitalising on a free-rein from the Lions to kick three of his own. The Lions led by 16 points at quarter time before the home side locked down.
“We knew if we went head-tohead with Pakenham, they win, so we locked down at the stoppages and stopped them from getting us on the outside,” said Officer coach Brad Jones. Blair Allan was also outstanding for the winners while Beau Wheeler and Cory Lenders were terrific for Lions - who now the bye and two weeks to stew over the loss. And finally, Cranbourne overcame a slow start to crush Tooradin by 91 points on Anzac Day. The Seagulls opened with two quick ones, but were then pushed aside as last year’s runners-up hit their stride. Marc Holt kicked five for the Eagles, while Jarrod Murphy and Zac Roscoe applied some brilliant forward pressure on their way to three each. Midfielders Ryan Davey and Max Gearon were terrific for the Eagles, while Andrew Dean slotted four for the Seagulls. Hampton Park had the bye.

Jade makes a comeback! By DAVID NAGEL
New-Tooradin coach Kelly Haynes shows great hands under enormous pressure from Cranbourne defender Tara Cecil. The Seagulls remain unbeaten after a 12Picture: ROB CAREW goal victory. 153248
IT was the calm before the storm in SEFNL this week with ROC posting its first win of the season and Narre Warren and Tooradin warming up for this week’s block-buster clash at Kalora Park with impressive performances. The retirement of Narre Warren premiership coach Jade Heinrich has lasted all of one week, Jade sensational as goal-attack in the Magpies 41-27 victory over Beaconsfield at Holm Park Reserve. The Magpies were down a couple of their key players this week, with Kara Hargrave and Chloe Phillips sitting on the sidelines; meaning Jade, Brittany Mashado and Sophie Gambetta could join a side that won so impressively against Doveton last week. The Magpies took control of the contest in the first half, scoring 24-11, before easing up after half time. Defender Tracey Dell was sensational for the Magpies, combining with Adele Clydesdale and Gambetta to limit the Eagles to just six and five goals in the first two quarters. Danni Cameron and Gabby Stinear defended stoutly for the Eagles, who threw
Kaela Hughes into defence to limit the flow of traffic in the third quarter. Doveton has bounced back to the winning list with a staggeringly-good second half performance against Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve. The Doves, who were torn apart by Narre Warren last week, scored 32 goals to 19 after half time to run away with a convincing 53-41 victory. After scoring just eight goals in the second term, the Doves exploded in the third. Samantha Kappl and Liz Edwards caught fire under the ring, while the reigning B Grade Player of the Year’s, Natalie Montanari and Breanne Miller, lifted their rating in defence and through the midcourt respectively. The Doves scored 17 goals to nine in the third quarter, to take a seven-goal lead, before cruising home for their third victory in four outings. ROC’s A Grade girls capped off a magnificent day for the club, proving too strong in the final quarter to roll Pakenham 42-36 at Starling Road. The Kangaroos had a great day out, winning eight of the 10 matches on the day, with
a draw in B Grade and a loss in the 17 and Under Red’s the only games where four premiership points didn’t return to the club. After a topsy-turvy first three quarters things were locked at 30-30 heading into the final exchange, with the game well and truly up for the grabs. And it was the Kangaroos who wanted it more, Ash Barnett, Jaz Cross and Gemma Stacey lifting in the middle, while Sam Neil played a cracking last quarter in goal-attack. And finally, Tooradin has continued its magnificent start to 2016 with a powerful 5341 victory over Cranbourne at Westernport Oval on Anzac Day. The Seagulls looked red-hot early; Jess Maher and Shona Wells combining brilliantly from defence into the midcourt, while the feeding of goalers Kelly Haynes and Alex Duff lacked nothing in comparison. Sharni Lambden had her hands on the ball often for the Eagles and her partnership with the likes of Darcy O’Donnell and Steph Ryan will get smoother over time. Hampton Park had the bye.

Cavs get the nod By JARROD POTTER BIG V - ROUND 5 RIVALRY resumed for Casey Cavaliers in Sunday’s 73-63 Big V victory over Shepparton. Like peas in a pod, the sides have shared fortunes and charted the same path in recent seasons, but even when deprived of key personnel, the Cavs are capable of sowing plenty of worry throughout the division. With Brent Hobba (ankle) and Lester Strong unavailable for the clash, it left a lot to the other talltimber to shoulder the workload and halt the Gators’ imports Reginald Fuller (25 points, 10 rebounds) and Deshawn Gibbons (three points). The mission was well and truly accomplished early as Shepparton trailed Casey 23-11 at the first change as Dean Johnson (three points, nine rebounds) carried plenty of defensive duties alongside Matt Witherden (11 points) and Ben Louis (13 points, five assists, four steals) - with the latter clamping down on Fuller. Louis stuffed the stats into every column as he soared to the hoop and generally terrorised the Gators at both ends while James Deneefe (16 points, 10 rebounds) flew like a centre in his first double-double of the season. Fuller would get off the leash through the final term, but Casey’s all-round approach continued to cause headaches throughout the league. All Cavaliers - even youth men call-ups Sam Pike and Nathan Dodgson - held up their end of the bargain to restrict the powerful Gators’ attack from start to finish. “We’ve mirrored each other to a large degree and respect their organisation and the playing group

Under-12 Cavaliers Liam Taylor, Jasper Roos and Connor Bigley had a great view of the on-court action Picture: JARROD POTTER as Big V floor-wipers. 153366 and I’m confident that respect is mutual,” Casey coach Stewart Baird said. “We set ourselves for it - knew we had a good half of basketball the week before against Camberwell and want to do everything to extend that. “The boys were good - the best 30-33 mins of basketball we’ve played this year.” While the numbers are nice, the stuff that never gets onto the sheet impressed Baird across the roster, especially with Johnson in the post. “What you’d call workmanlike I’d suppose - doing the basics without getting the glory, but it made a huge contribution to our effort,” Baird said. “Rebounding is always a big focus for us and a lot of that grunt work would fall to Dean ... he’s no fuss, wants to contribute and he does week-in, week-out.” Casey heads to Keysborough for
the men’s sides first match since 2014 as another old rivalry re-ignites in Division 1. “We’ve set ourselves for this weekend too - they’ve been putting up huge numbers and for us it’s all about defence,” Baird said. “That’s fine as that’s all it’s been about this season - we’re looking to curtail their productivity and put in a great team defensive effort. “Outside of that, it’s down to us doing our thing, the way we want to do it and not getting sucked into anything else. “They’ll probably have a big and noisy crowd and there will be plenty said on the court, but we have to stay focused and do the things we do well.” Traveling up to Wodonga is never easy, but Casey’s women managed to get the job done just in a 52-50 win over North East. The low-scoring affair favoured
the hosts early - shooting out of the blocks to an 18-9 quarter time lead. It took a power-packed third term for the Cavs to snatch the lead out from under North East. Tarryn Wilkin (15 points, 15 rebounds) and Jess Szalek (13 points, eight rebounds) burdened the responsibilities under the basket while Ruchelle McCracken (eight points, five rebounds) and Cyanne Mather (seven points, four rebounds) also featured prominently on the statsheet. Casey’s women host Mornington on Saturday night. In a foul-filled clash, Casey’s youth men took a 71-58 win over Pakenham. The whistle went all night as 44 fouls were called across the game, but Casey had enough to get the job done via Nathan Dodgson (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Sam Pike (13 points, nine rebounds). They travel to Mildura on Saturday.
Undermanned Eagles bombard the Colts Georgia (Anderson) and Courtney (Robinson) have heaps of experience in the Youth Girls competition and are there to help and mentor the new players.” The two wins have Beaconsfield sitting second in the VWFL South East competition and it will battle top side Mornington away on Sunday afternoon as part of a tough month ahead. “We know we’re going to come up against some tough teams in the next four weeks,” Robinson said. “If we can get a 50/50 split from those matches that would be a great outcome and would show how far we’ve come and to see what we can do. “I'm really stoked with the way the girls are developing - we understand we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves, but it’s still exciting as the girls are embracing the whole concept. “In the next four weeks - it will be great to see how far we can develop.”
By JARROD POTTER VWFL SOUTH EAST - ANZAC DAY ROUND PUTTING its foot down on the big stage, Beaconsfield’s women’s football team showed what it’s can do even with its full roster yet to be assembled. All eyes turned to Holm Park Reserve on Saturday - for a jam-packed day starting with Under 17 boys and finishing with the senior men’s clash against Narre Warren. Playing on Saturday afternoon - as part of Beaconsfield’s Anzac Day commemorations at Holm Park Reserve - the Eagles’ VWFL team left no stone unturned in its 157-point drubbing of fellow newcomers Warragul Colts. The Princes Highway battle proved particularly lopsided as the Eagles swamped the Colts at every stoppage and took possession at will. Numbers were boosted up to 18 this week as the Eagles have secured their future and then some with a full complement in the ranks. The Eagles were far too powerful in all aspects of game-play - they took on the Colts through the midfield and bombarded the visiting defence with too many forward entries to handle. Katie Angelis was unstoppable inside-50, snagging eight goals to terrorise the Colts’ defenders while Ruby Clayton (four goals) excelled in her senior debut alongside Kerrie Richardson (three goals) and Courtney Robinson (two goals). The skipper Jade Hough (two goals) led from the front once again while Rachael Kimber and Kristy Hinkley also featured in the best for their stellar outings. “Our ball movement is working well for us and the development of the players understanding our game plan was another big plus,” Beaconsfield VWFL coach Troy Robinson said. “We’re not a fan of the stop-start game - we

Ron’s proud of his club efforts By JARROD POTTER THERE was plenty to celebrate at Hampton Park Tennis Club over the weekend as major works and club milestones were honoured. HPTC President Ron Lamb was the man of honour on Sunday afternoon as he knocked off 20 seasons as the main man at Robert Booth Reserve’s tennis facility. He only joined the committee at the behest of his tennis playing family - wife Julie and daughters Amanda and Belinda - but has loved every second being part of the local sporting community. “Basically it’s because my wife and kids played - I don’t really play tennis,” Lamb said. “It’s just the people basically and they’re all good people and just enjoyed it over the years. “It has its moments of course, but everything has its moments I suppose.” Lamb especially loves to see the youngsters come through the ranks and eventually bring along their own kids to continue the on-court legacy. “I mainly look back on the juniors and seeing them mature, grow up and come back as adults with their children as well,” Lamb said. “That’s one of the great things about being here for so long. “The achievements of the club itself by the extensions it has had, the courts and lighting its had as well have been some of the highlights.” The club also celebrated the completion of works to its tennis courts, thanks to a City of Casey funding boost. A $100,000 capital works grant has drastically improved facilities and funded upgrade to the Robert Booth Reserve tennis courts. Hampton Park Tennis Club had the grand opening of the three renovated courts on Sunday afternoon and the 200-member strong club was thrilled to get the new court surfaces - laid in Hampton Park red of course. “It just means so much to us,” Lamb said. “We had a lot of problems last year with players refusing to play because they thought the surface was dangerous. “It wasn’t very good back then, but now it’s amazing - there’s a heap of difference now.” Hampton Park Tennis Club - which celebrated its 50 year anniversary last year - wanted to thank River Gum Ward councillor Damien Rosario for his support of the club and helping get the funding in place. The funding paid for the renovated court surfaces, a retaining wall and new fencing for the club.
The club's new red courts were also in the spotlight on Sunday as the club kicked off its 2016 winter season. 153364

Micro is making it big By ALISTAIR KENNEDY KIA has entered the Australian micro car market with a small five-door hatch called Picanto that combines cute looks, automatic transmission as standard, capable performance, and an appealing driveaway price of $14,990. Small city (aka micro) cars have historically been poor sellers in Australia with its sprawling suburbs and cheap fuel. However increasing environmental awareness has seen a surge in popularity of the segment which is populated by cars such as the market-leading Mitsubishi Mirage, Nissan Micra, Suzuki Celerio and Holden Spark. As with the other cars in the segment Kia’s primary target for Picanto will be late-teen / early 20s females, with a smattering of baby boomers taking up the slack. Those at the young end of the age scale typically have a three-point check list - cute styling, affordability and the latest in infotainment technology. While Picanto ticks the first two boxes the model that has just arrived in Australia is nearly five years old and lags significantly behind its newer competitors in tech features. Despite its age the styling of Picanto (love that name, it sounds like
New Kia Picanto is cute, capable and competitively priced. it should mean something in Italian … but doesn’t) is fresh and contemporary courtesy of a 2015 facelift. Although it’s built in South Korea there is the European influence that is characteristic of all new Kia models penned by design chief Peter Schreyer. The bold frontal treatment of Picanto includes the Kia ‘Tiger’ nose design with a mesh infill to both the grille and large lower air intake. The sculpted side features a rising character line with the rear fringed by eye-catching ‘inverted comma’ taillights. There’s a reassuringly solid feel when you get into new Picanto and entry / exit is easier than would be
imagined. The tall styling works particularly well and the boxy shape provides a surprising amount of interior space. The seats are firm but comfortable and there’s good headroom in all seats and reasonable rear seat legroom. There’s an attractive chrome trim finish on the bottom of the dashboard and lower part of the steering wheel. The major controls are large and well-placed. The steering wheel is height adjustable only Kia does interior storage better than just about anyone else, with the USB and Aux socket recessed immediately above a phone-sized

space and twin retractable drinkholder arms that fold back when not in use to provide a large open storage space in the centre console. Luggage capacity is 200 litres with all seats in place, increasing to 605 litres with the 60:40 rear seatbacks lowered. There is a space saver spare wheel below the boot floor. Infotainment features are limited to the Bluetooth phone and audio streaming with information displayed on a small red-on-back screen. Only one Picanto specification level is offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine, four-speed automatic. With only 63 kilowatts of power and 120 Newton metres of torque (at 4000 rpm) from its 1248cc engine Picanto isn’t a ball of fire. Having said that, of its competitors, only Holden’s Spark has higher outputs. In addition the 3.6-metre long hatchback weighs in at a just under 1000 kilograms so even with an old style four-speed auto it is livelier than expected, but an extra gear would be nice. Fuel consumption is listed at 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/highway cycle. We’ll provide a real-life figure when we do our extended test in a few weeks. To inspect the Kia range contact Berwick Kia, 2-12 Clyde Road, Berwick. Phone 9709 1900.
