New-look city, park revealed Johnstone rejig, green ‘spine’ to stun visitors The State’s plan could be incorporated with the City in a Park concept, he said. Work on the Johnstone Park master plan was considering issues such as the park’s drainage, the health of its existing trees and heritage aspects. An archaeological investigation in conjunction with the park upgrade began trying to locate a set of historical stairs near Gheringhap Street yesterday, Mr Luxford said. Continued page 3

New designs featuring an expanded Johnstone Park leading to a green spine along Malop Street to Eastern Gardens have been revealed. City Hall released its draft plans for Malop Street to seek public consultation before moving ahead with its City in a Park and green spine visions, investment and attraction general manager Brett Luxford said. City officers were also collaborating with the State Government on its separate master plan for Johnstone Park, Mr Luxford said.

Uni urged to move on site By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong has waited long enough for Deakin University to make a decision about the use of its waterfront car park for a convention centre, according to South Barwon MP Andrew Katos. “Deakin needs to make a decision,” Mr Katos said. “It’s either, 'Yes, we’re interested’, or, 'No’, and if it’s no we can go away and look at other sites.” Mr Katos called for the decision following Deakin revealing plans to build accommodation for 300 students on part of its waterfront landholdings. “It’s time for Deakin to give clarity to the situation. We’ve waited long enough,” Mr Katos said. “If they’re interested in talking to government about it that’s fine but let’s do it. If not let’s look
at other sites. If another site is to be considered, however, it has to be on the waterfront.” At the launch of Deakin’s new student accommodation in Geelong’s iconic T and G building, vice-chancellor Prof Jane den Hollander confirmed the waterfront accommodation plans. But the university, which has extensive landholdings in the area, would not confirm the site of the planned accommodation. Prof den Hollander said Deakin hoped to begin building by the end of the year. A Deakin spokesperson refused to be drawn on the university’s plan for its watefront Smythe Street car park. “It still has to go through Deakin, council and planning processes, so any further discussion about it is premature.” Geelong’s convention centre saga has dragged on for years, with several alternative sites suggested.
The former Coalition State Government committed $5 million for a convention centre business plan before the last election, with Deakin’s car park the preferred site. The funding was lost when the Coalition failed to win re-election. After the election, Labor Member for Bellarine and state minister Lisa Neville said Geelong’s council could be involved in a swap of its busport facility for Deakin’s car park. Ms Neville told the Geelong Indy the convention centre could only become a reality on the Deakin car park site. “That’s the site and (the convention centre) can’t be successful unless it is,” she said. This week’s state budget included funding for Labor’s Geelong authority, a planning advisory group set up to accelerate the redevelopment of the city centre.

In Brief Thieves ram Thieves have used a ute to ram-raid three Geelong businesses in separate suburbs within one hour. Police believed the raids at Highton’s Vallis IGA, Manifold Heights’ lotto outlet and a North Geelong bottleshop early Saturday could be linked to a Corio ram-raid previous day.
Jobs lost Two of the region’s biggest retailers have launched redundancies at local offices. Staff at Torquay’s Quiksilver and North Geelong’s Target, which last week revealed plans to shift headquarters to western Melbourne, confirmed dozens of jobs had gone in the cutbacks.
Bus jobs Five-hundred jobs could be created building electric buses at Avalon Airport, a manufacturer has revealed. Avass confirmed it was already working out of a hangar at the airport, with plans to export its vehicles around the world.
Merc menace Police are hunting the driver of a luxury Sclass Mercedes over “several serious traffic offences” around Geelong. The black S 320 was “known to frequent Newtown, Grovedale, Corio, Norlane and Whittington areas”, police posted on Facebook.
Players suspended A Torquay footballer has been suspended for six weeks over a sling tackle that left a Modewarre opponent unconscious with a dislocated shoulder. Lachlan Baker’s ban was among a series of AFL Barwon tribunal hearings this week, which included a three-week ban handed down to St Albans captain Ben Evans for rough conduct.
Started up WHERE ARE THEY? Heritage archeologist Alison looks for the buried heritage stairs at the site of the Johnstone Park investigation.
Cleaner, greener heart as new-look city, park revealed From page 1 The investigation was using probes to pinpoint the stairs and determine whether they remained intact or in restorable condition. “If the stairs are located and are found to be in good condition, options will be investigated to integrate them within the new park master plan,” Mr Luxford said. The Indy reported last June that former councillor Tony Ansett had called for the stairs to be dug up and reinstated, “perhaps further west on the path through the park”. The plans for the green spine and Johnstone Park were revealed this week as council began dismantalling its successful but temporary Malop Street Lab, one of several projects to improve the
amenity of key city streets. The Malop Street Lab would return in October with new designs, “giving the community a realistic experience of what the future of the street will be”, the City said. Schematic plans for the Malop Street Green Spine between Gheringhap and Yarra streets will go on display for public feedback. Mr Luxford said creating a high-amenity street environment would improve opportunities for businesses and encourage new investment and development. “This will deliver more trees and green spaces to the heart of the city, transforming it into an attractive and inviting place.” The first section for reconstruction was be-
tween Clare and Moorabool streets, Mr Luxford said. “At this stage funding is only available for this first section. Council is currently seeking funding to deliver the balance of the street between Gheringhap and Yarra streets.” The council would finalise the plans before working with affected businesses to manage construction and minimise impacts, Mr Luxford said. “Construction is expected to commence in early 2017 and finish by the end of the year.” Feedback is open until 13 May at The Workshop, 100 Moorabool Street, or online at geelongaustralia.com.au/revitalisation/greenspine
Twenty new Geelong businesses covering everything from steel fabrication to African beauty products have gone on show at the city’s library and heritage centre. Organisers said the G21 Start-Up Program Showcase demonstrated the program’s achievements in helping entrepreneurs develop their ideas for commercialisation.
Weight worries Geelong businesses should encourage healthy habits among employees to help combat the city’s obesity problem, according to Cancer Council Victoria. The council said weight problems were a significant cost-burden on business, particularly in Geelong where 56 per cent of the population was overweight or obese.
Changes to your water supply Barwon Water is calling on back-up water sources, the Melbourne to Geelong pipeline and Barwon Downs borefield, in response to prolonged dry conditions. Barwon Water will access the Victorian water grid via the 59-kilometre Melbourne to Geelong pipeline from the beginning of April. The Barwon Downs borefield, a critical source previously used to supplement supplies in drought conditions, is also being readied for operation.
Barwon Water customers will not pay extra for these water sources; prices are locked in until June, 2018. Some customers may notice a change in the taste of their water when the sources are changed. All water supplied will remain safe to drink and is compliant with Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. For more information, please telephone 1300 656 007 or visit www.barwonwater.vic.gov.au. Double Take
ABILITY: Council staff put these disabled parking signs around the wrong way. 1225550-CB17-16
Target’s certainly on the nose in Geelong for moving headquarters but its namesake’s toilets are raising a real stink in the US. A #BoycottTarget campaign gathered over half a million signatures in less than a week after the US retailer announced customers could choose toilets according to their gender identity. The policy might have been popular with the LGBTI community but failed to hit the, er, target, with the American Family Association, whose hashtag boycott campaign garnered signatures in droves amid concerns about sex predators. Now with news this week of Australia’s Target has laying off dozens of staff in Geelong, maybe it’s time for a similar campaign in the land Down Under. Whoever thought Geelong council was sacked because of politics has it all wrong. A Touch of the Fumbles, Adelaide’s In Daily footy column, purports an entirely different “plot” behind the sacking - and it’s football related, of course. Referring to the second best-on-ground perfor-
NOW OPEN
mance by Patrick Dangerfield against Port Adelaide last weekend, the column suggested the recruit was still smarting from the fact that his father-in-law, Bruce Harwood, was a prominent member of the “infamous” dismissed council. The plot thickened with comment from ex-mayor Darren Lyons boasting that the pair plotted Dangerfield’s return for some time. “We’re not sure if this admission prompted the council’s mass sacking but we suspect so - and quite right too,” the column proclaimed. Naturally, it merely enhances the view that Geelong runs entirely on football. Perhaps the council sacking has also impacted staff more than they let on. Council workers recently installed a disabled parking space in Storrer Avenue, East Geelong, outside Geelong Amateur Radio Club. It has a lovely new disability logo painted on the road surface, crisp white lines and two brandspanking-new signs at either end of the space. The only problem is the signs point in the wrong directions.

BACK IN BUSINESS: Doug Moreillon, Di Ibbotson, Margaret Farmer and Maureen Duffy outside the saved Belmont op shop.
Opportunity knocks twice By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN It was meant to be a farewell party for the volunteers of the closing Oppe Shoppe - but turned out to be a celebration instead. Despite weeks of preparing to close, and letting all their loyal customers know, Belmont’s long-running and much-loved Oppe Shoppe has a new lease on life. Long-standing volunteer Maria De Amicis said everyone involved in the Belmont Baptist venture was delighted it would remain open.
“We arrived at the Friday afternoon farewell party to find the manager of Diversitat and other managers present and the pastor told us the news. “Diversitat will take over the Oppe Shoppe, so now we have to let everyone know it’s not closing as advertised.” Manager Di Ibbotson said the High Street op shop had been struggling recently, with a reduction in revenue from sales making the rental harder to pay. “But Diversitat heard we were closing and the moved quickly to contact us. It was all agreed within 24 hours.
“So we want to let everyone know that we’d love them to keep coming to shop here. We’re taking donations again and most of the volunteers are staying on as well. “In fact, we could use some more help. We’re looking for a retired electrician to volunteer half a day a week to test the donated electrical appliances before sale.” Ms De Amicis said retired electicians willing to help and anyone with donations or keen to volunteer could phone the Oppe Shoppe on 5244 1306 or visits its premises at 5/110-120 High Street.
A crowd-funding campaign is seeking donations to help asylum seekers in Geelong apply for protection visas. The Seeking Refuge Project, a partnership between seven community groups, needs $70,000 for interpreter services to help asylum seekers with visaapplication process. Project co-ordinator Marijana Graljuk said about 300 asylum seekers in the Geelong area would be able to apply for protection visas over the next three years. Seeking Refuge was arranging workshops to help them complete their applications but most would need inter- Marijana Graljuk preters to ensure their information was accurately recorded, she said. “Each application takes several hours to complete at a cost of around $465 in interpreting fees per application. “Without access to professional interpreters, asylum seekers will find it difficult to understand the requirements of the application process. Professional interpreters will provide asylum seekers with the best chance of completing their application correctly so their claim for protection can be reasonably assessed. Ms Graljuk said the project included rewards for donating, with donations over $2 tax deductible. The Seeking Refuge Project is a partnership between Bellarine for Refugees, Barwon Community Legal Service, the Wesley Centre for Life Enrichment, Diversitat, the Combined Refugee Action Group Geelong, Refugee Legal and the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre, with the support of Deakin University. The project’s crowd-funding campaign is at pozible.com/seekingrefuge until 31 May.

Water-owned land east of Lara, would have wider environmental advantages than bird conservation alone, Mr Stringer said. “Partnerships like these are vital to achieving large-scale conservation across the landscape, particularly in important habitats such as saltmarsh. We are already seeing positive results with native saltmarsh plant species regenerating,” Mr Stringer said. “Saltmarsh vegetation has also recently been identified as one of the most effective carbon sinks on the planet. Saltmarsh, along with mangroves and seagrass meadows, can bury carbon at 35 to 57 times faster than tropical rainforests and can store this ‘blue carbon’ for thousands of years. “This makes saltmarsh vegetation ideal targets for carbon offset programs and nature-based climate mitigation initiatives.” Detail © David Doubilet (United States) Turtle flight

The region’s own “Kakadu” is benefiting from a restoration project on Geelong’s doorstep. The work on saltmarsh land near Point Wilson would restore “vital habitat” for endangered birds, said Parks Victoria project co-ordinator Toby Stringer. Cash to regions in budget spend By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Regional cities like Geelong were the big winners in this year’s budget, treasurer Tim Pallas claims. “This Budget delivers the highest regional infrastructure investment on record,” he said. “With our investment, regional cities will start to rival Melbourne in the race for new jobs, businesses and residents. “They will become renowned centres for education, and arts and culture - drawing in visitors from across the country. “And they will be home to the industries of the future.” Geelong’s roads, rail and schools were the focus of the big-spending budget. Regional Victoria gets a $1.3 billion investment into improved rail services, with 170 V/Line services to be added, giving Geelong more trains more often. There was also $6 million to prepare business cases for the duplication of the line from South Geelong to Waurn Ponds and for extra services to Armstrong Creek. The Drysdale Bypass received $107 million and $4 million was allocated to planning for the Geelong Ring Road Extension to the Bellarine Peninsula. There was $15 million for planning future regional road works in various locations including an upgrade of the Midland Hwy to Bannockburn and duplication of Barwon heads Rd to Armstrong Creek. The previously announced Western Distributor received $1.46 billion over four years with claims it will cut travel times from Geelong by 20 minutes. Geelong Performing Arts Centre received $7 million towards its redevelopment. A number of schools received funding out of a $35 million pool for upgrades and modernisation. The list includes Bellarine Secondary College, Belmont High School, Grovedale College, Mani-
fold Heights Primary School, Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College, Nelson Park School, North Geelong Secondary College, Oberon High School, Ocean Grove Primary School and Whittington Primary School. The government had already announced a new tech school for Geelong, to be located at Gordon Institute’s city campus but added a funding commitment for a new school at the Armstrong Creek. Another $5.5 million was allocated to “revitalise Geelong improving outdoor spaces and streetscapes in central Geelong and supporting the work of the Geelong authority to deliver the projects the city needs”. There was also $3 million to meet extra planning responsibilities associated with important developments in regional Victoria, including in central Geelong and the Moolap waterfront precinct. The Geelong police station will receive funding for a refurbishment. The region benefited in real and tangible ways from the state budget, G21 CEO Elaine Carbines said. “The budget recognises a number of key needs across the region, including several projects G21 has advocated for as regional priorities,” Ms Carbines said. Shadow treasurer Michael O’Brien the budget was lightweight, with little substance and no jobs plan for the loss of car makers, Ford, Holden and Toyota. He said Mr Pallas had money to spend because he had “literally had a Tattslotto win”. “When you look at the revenue windfalls this Treasurer has received, he is walking proof of the adage that it is far better to be lucky than good,” Mr O’Brien said. He said the government’s “windfall gains” included land transfer duty up by $1.6 billion, GST up $1 billion and the $540 million court win against Tatts over gaming machine licences.
STRUNG OUT: The members of Geelong Ukestra ahead of their public debut this week.
Little orchestra with plenty of pluck Geelong first ‘ukestra’ has debuted with a troupe of locals strumming their stuff on tiny stringed instruments. The group of ukulele players divided segments of each song between members depending on their abilities to “make a fantastic ensemble sound”, explained facilitators Di Moore and Robyn Hodge. “Think Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, only for ordinary folk,” they said. “It’s community music making, where process and participation are more important than perfection”. Di and Robyn were inspired to form Geelong Ukestra, scheduled to debut at Waurn Ponds Hotel on Thursday night, after “lurking at various ukulele festivals for a while”. Their main inspiration was Ukastle Ukestra’s Mark Jackson and partner Jane Jelbart, whose “accessible and exciting approach” to ukulele music struck a chord with the pair. “Mark and Jane gave us their blessing and are
mentoring us as we build our Geelong Ukestra” Di said. “We’re honoured by their trust and plan to create a fantastic experience for uke players in Geelong. Hopefully everyone involved will help to build a supportive and friendly musical community.” Robyn urged prospective members to join the new band. “Ukulele is ultimately a sociable instrument and, as they get more accomplished, players are looking for opportunities to make music with friends - and this is where the Geelong Ukestra comes in,” she said. “We want to get people out from behind their YouTube tutorials and chord charts and into a band experience where the focus is on fun and delivering an entertaining performance.” Robyn and Di, both ukulele teachers, said anyone wanting more information on the new group could visit geelongukestra.com.au

MP calls for Torquay aquatic rally A rally will seek to revive Torquay’s push for an aquatic centre, according to an MP who called the event. The rally would follow Surf Coast’s council “badly letting down the community last year when it failed to seek funding to build the facility, said Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson. The shire set aside land for the centre but shelved the plan due to its $29 million price tag and ongoing maintenance costs. Proponents have raised doubts about the project costing and council’s shire-wide survey on the
facility, which linked the centre to increased rates. Ms Henderson, a Liberal who faces Surf Coast councillor Libby Coker as Labor’s Corangamite candidate, said other municipalities had secured funding from higher levels of government for similar projects. “Not only has the Surf Coast Shire voted to shut this project down, it has decided not to make it a priority project for Federal Election funding,“ she said. “Surf Coast residents have been badly let down by a council (that) failed to seek any state or federal funding for this project. In contrast, the City
of Bendigo recently secured $19.9m for an aquatic centre, including $4.9m from the Turnbull Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund. “It is disappointing that council did not even provide funds to progress detailed planning and design so that a new pool could be properly costed. The funding model put forward by council which imposed a 20-year special charge, or pool tax, on all ratepayers of up to $150 a year was divisive and inequitable and incredibly unfair on local residents. The aquatic centre was “vital for families, seniors, students and children learning to swim, Ms Henderson said.
“That is why I am holding a community meeting to rally support for an aquatic centre on Sunday 15 May 2016 from 10.30am at the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club. “Please come along to our community meeting to show your support for an aquatic centre, to provide feedback or to raise any other issue that’s important to you or your family. Ms Henderson said she had also sent a survey to all residents in Torqauay, Jan Juc, Bellbrae and Bells Beach. “I am determined to give every resident a say on this important issue.
Mascot keeping kids safe A colourful safety mascot is helping North Shore kinder kids prepare journals about preventing injuries at home. Rosewall Kindergarten hosted SeeMore last week as part of KIDS Foundation’s safety program of the same name. City Hall and Geelong charity support agency Give Where You Live have been helping the foundation roll out SeeMore’s program with the aim of enhancing safety awareness “at preschool, home and other relevant environments. “Enhancing children’s learning about safety is the highest priority at Rosewall Kindergarten and council’s involvement in the SeeMore Safety program has provided fantastic opportunities for many families to discuss injury prevention at home, said City Hall’s community life general manager, Linda Quinn. “The teachers came up with an innovative and inclusive extension to the safety program, the SeeMore
Safety Journal, where children take SeeMore the mascot into their homes and include him in daily activities. “Children take photos with the help of their parents and write about their adventures in the SeeMore journal. SeeMore’s adventures are then shared with friends back at kinder. Ms Quinn said involving children’s parents and siblings in the program reinforced and spread the safety messages developed at kinder. The journal provided “an authentic context to create a common language and share safety values within the whole community, she said. KIDS Foundation founder Susie O’Neill visited Rosewall to watch the kids sharing journal entries. "We encourage participation in the SeeMore Safety program to be both educational and fun. "The activities, books and materials empower children and the rest of the community to ‘Think Safe, Play Safe’.

DID YOU KNOW
Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.
If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.
On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.
Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.
If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
This federal election your vote will help shape Australia.

STARRY NIGHT: Joel Carnegie will perform his show Stardust: The Col Brian Story as one of the many Geelong After Dark acts next week.
Geelong art by night sheds a light More than 60 artists or groups will transform central Geelong “in a night of discovery” next week, City Hall has announced. Geelong After Dark, from 6pm to 10pm on 6 May, would present “an exciting mix of unique and surprising free performances, installations and arts experiences,” the City said. “This year central Geelong will be divided into four zones where the activity will take place: Cultural Precinct, Lt Malop Street, Moorabool Street and Waterfront Precinct. “Throughout the evening, people will have the choice to just rock up, plan an evening using the program guide or choose one of five curated experiences now available on the Geelong After Dark website.” The City said patrons could schedule the eve-
ning to satisfy individual “whims and interests”, such as music and theatre, multimedia and visual arts, “interactivity” or "family friendly” activities. Other drawcards included a Kids Treasure Hunt with “major prizes” for children who collected maps from the city’s Focus Five Building, on the corner of Lt Malop and Gheringhap streets. City investment and attraction general manager Brett Luxford promised “edgy arts experiences, placed in some of the most unusual places”. “Now in its third year, this free multi-award winning event will be Geelong’s biggest pop up night of arts yet, with over 200 artists involved. Get ready to be surprised.” The full program is available at geelongafterdark.com.au.
The tenant of Geelong’s The Beach House restaurant faces court next month on alleged “legal health breaches”, City Hall has revealed. The news follows a report that the Eastern Beach venue had unexpectedly closed, with its owner blaming council for “not being helpful” in lease extension negotiations. The closure was a “spur of the moment sort of decision”, the owner was reported to have said. The restuarant’s closure shocked staff and left wedding bookings up in the air as customers sought reassurances from the owner. Geelong Magistrates’ Court lists City of Greater Geelong as the prosecuting agency against restaurant operator Eastern Beach Views in a mention hearing on 9 May. “Unfortunately, I can confirm that there are currently legal health breaches under the Food Act listed for hearing at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 9 May, 2016, involving council and our tenant at Eastern Beach,” said the city’s investment and attraction general manager Brett Luxford. The council had yet to receive “any notification” of the restaurant’s closure, Mr Luxford said. “Regarding the Beach House, I can confirm that over the past two years our officers have had two meetings with the tenant regarding renewal of the lease. In both meetings, held on 23 April, 2014, and 12 March, 2015, we told the tenant that we valued our business relationship and would welcome a business proposal to renew the lease. “In a subsequent email on 2 September, 2015, the tenant told us he was working on a business proposal and would have it to us in the coming months. “That’s the last communication we’ve had on the lease and we’ve not had any recent request for a new lease or for rent abatement.” Mr Luxford said the council had complied
CLOSED: The Beach House restaurant. with all legislative requirements and obligations under its lease agreement with the tenant and had offered ongoing support to assist with its business operations. “For example, when requested, we offered flexible rent payment plans to take into account the seasonal nature of the business, including the impact of council’s seawall re-construction project a few years ago. “As well, in the last four years council has spent about $20,000 to maintain the property as per our lease obligations and as a responsible building owner. This involved about 70 separate maintenance jobs done at the property.” Mr Luxford said the city had no outstanding requests for maintenance. He expressed the council’s “sincere regret” about any business closing in Geelong and “acknowledged the stress for everyone involved in such an event”. The Independent has sought comment from The Beach House’s owner.

DINGALING: T&G’s famous bell ringers have been restored.
City icon gets a big tick Geelong’s iconic T&G building has a new lease on life as student accommodation following an official opening on Monday. The city’s famous father and son bell ringers, Dad and Dave, will return after extensive renovation works transformed the heritage site into units for 33 students. Deakin University vice-chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said she was delighted Geelong would again hear the sounds of the clock. “Just as Dad and Dave were the brainchild of T&G managing director Peter Thompson, who wanted to symbolise a father handing over responsibility to the next generation, we feel honoured to hand this building over to students who will be the next generation of medical and nursing professionals,” Professor den Hollander said.
“Just standing outside this building and seeing its beautifully-restored facade invokes inspiration, and now inside its walls will live those who will help make a difference to our city in the decades to come. “Deakin is proud to be able to invest in projects that are for the good of the communities we serve and I can’t think of a better example of that than the T&G building.” Deakin University invested $7.1 million into the redevelopment, on top of the purchase price, after buying it in 2014. The project was funded by the Federal Government’s $2.65 million through the National Rental Affordability Scheme and $850,000 from the State Government’s Geelong Advancement Fund.
The redevelopment is the result of the vision of Peter Woolard of Studio 101 Architects and architect John Elsworthy. The addition of the T&G accommodation takes the capacity of Deakin University’s Geelong student housing to 831 units. “By bringing more people to live in the heart of the CBD, this grand old T&G building will continue as a Geelong icon, playing its part in ensuring Geelong has an exciting, culturally vibrant and thriving community,” Professor den Hollander said. She said the number of students studying at Deakin’s Waterfront campus had grown to 4500, up from 2500 in 2011.
Geelong and Surf Coast councils should follow the lead of Mornington Peninsula Shire in joining the Transport Accident Commission’s Towards Zero campaign, according to the TAC’s chief executive officer. Mornington became the state’s first Towards Zero municipality last week when its council voted to join the campaign’s push for reduced road deaths and serious injuries, Joe Calafiore said. Councils officially aligning with Towards Zero must commit to developing a “safer overall road system” to prevent crashes or limit their consequences, he said. “Towards Zero is not just a campaign or a vision, it defines our approach to saving lives and we’re thrilled that Mornington has become Victoria’s first council to join the push.” Mr Calafiore said some of the ways councils could participate in Towards Zero included: introducing traffic-calming measures in local streets; speed management in areas with large volumes of cyclists and pedestrians; ensuring fleets had five-star safety ratings; and promoting the campaign to residents.
CHIEF: Joe Calafiore is urging councils to join the TAC's Towards Zero campaign.

Letters Hunger our secret shame It was inspiring to read about the two mates cycling Victoria for nine days to raise money for the hungerrelief charity Foodbank (Geelong Indy, 22 April). But it was worrying learning from the CEO of Foodbank Victoria, Dave McNamara, that hunger in Australia is one of our nation’s “best-kept secrets”. This is a secret that has to be brought out into the open. I’m certain that local Geelong charities such as Vinnies, UnitingCare, Give Where You Live and the Salvos would agree. They must witness the awful reality of hunger on a daily basis. About 108,700 Victorian children, women and men are going hungry each day - an extremely disturbing fact. All of us who can, need to respond as generously as we are able. This is especially true if we are fortunate enough to have properly paid employment. I would also publicly ask our political leaders to immediately increase the Newstart unemployment allowance, parenting payment and the disability support pension. The $36 a day Newstart payment has not been increased in real inflationadjusted terms for many years and is now at least 20 per cent below the poverty line. The minimum wage also needs an urgent rise. Indeed, everyone in Australia needs a liveable weekly income with which they can afford to pay for food, rent, clothing, education and other essentials. Robert Van Zetten Highton
A walkies in the park I would like the Geelong Indy to run a story on why the City of Greater Geelong does not have a designated dog park. We were on our way home from a long weekend away when we came across one in Mernda. It was brilliant. Our little dog loved getting off the lead in a safe environment. Many of the Mernda locals were using the park to give their big dogs a good run off-lead. My daughter informed me that Ballarat has one too and many people use it. We have enough room in the botanic gardens to fence off a large area specifically for this use. People are inclined to let their dogs off the lead in the gardens anyway, so why not have a safe area
Buckets & Bouquets Bouquets to authorities who provide bicycle lanes on our roads, despite some complaints about build-ups of detritus on them. Thanks for making it clearer that cyclists have just as much right to roads as anyone else. Happy Rider, Geelong West Buckets to the feral bogans who stole my dad’s garden gnomes. I know who did it because I heard them say they liked the gnomes and the next day they were stolen. I hope karma gets you back a million-fold. Your theft has been reported to police. where we can do this. We pay registration for our pets for many years, so a bit of secure fencing in the park is not too much to ask for. I have written to council about this but I would like to see one of the local papers investigate and take up the cause. Sharon Swallow Newcomb
RSL ‘hijacks’ Anzac service The veterans’ commemoration Anzac service at Ocean Grove was hijacked by the local RSL. The audience heard the history of the RSL, that it was the original returned services organisation and was this year 100 years old. The service pamphlet claimed the service was wholly RSL. Any claim that the commemoration service is owned by the RSL is untrue. Sure, the RSL has in the past organised the services on behalf of the Minister for Veterans' Affairs but its commemoration services are the responsibility of Federal Government. A transition to lunacy Vicky Grosser (Indy, 22 April) wrote that Solar Citizens and GetUp! had a power plan to “transition Australia to 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030”. “Next will be transport, then decarbonising the whole energy system by 2050,” she wrote. Wow! No more coal, petrol, diesel, oil, natural gas, aircraft fuel or LPG, just wind and solar for all electricity generation, heating, trucks, ships and boats, bulldozers, aircraft and army tanks. This would be accomplished by “unleashing the power of the sun and wind to provide clean, safe, affordable and reliable energy”. I logged on and read the plan.

Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au 78 Moorabool St, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799 It said greedy capitalist fossil fuel companies were ripping us off. Power stations and most of the electrical grid infrastructure would be scrapped and replaced with a distributed system of thousands of small localised solar and wind units. Baseload power requirement was a fallacy, it said, and electrical supply for when the wind didn’t blow or at cloudy times was no problem. But no explanations were provided. Natural gas for heating would be replaced with hydrogen and electricity would be bought from neighbours’ solar systems or the turbine at a friend’s wind farm! I couldn’t find anything explaining how to power a truck, plane or bulldozer with renewables. Space does not permit comment on the sheer lunacy of the plan and how it would leave Australians with a dysfunctional, intermittent, hugely expensive and totally useless electrical system. The future belongs to them According to Peter Rees (Letters, 15 April), nothing is good about Germany’s Energiewende. It’s causing huge unemployment, forcing people into the dark, delivering only a fraction of its promise at astronomical cost and destroying Germany’s economy. How could Germans allow this to happen? Are they stupid? Maybe it’s driven by a conspiracy that Mr Rees is sniffing out? Or does he just get his information from denier websites that cover every possible fact of global warming science and its solutions with their own so-called facts. Dig into any of these sites and they seem to always come down to a hidden conspiracy rather than good science. The Germans are investing in the world’s future. All their technology, up-skilling and economic stimulation will result in their economy powering ahead. We could be left in the coal dust. Will we be stupid? Jukka Tuisku Barwon Heads

Doug’s tribute to a legend They lived on opposite sides of the world, but gravel-voiced Englishman Joe Cocker and equally gritty Australian vocalist Doug Parkinson had many things in common. Both were born in steel towns, Cocker in Sheffield and Parkinson in Newcastle; both had hits with The Beatles songs, Cocker’s With A Little Help from My Friends and Parkinson’s Dear Prudence. Both were born with unmistakable voices and both lived rock star lifestyles tainted by drug and alcohol abuse that jeopardised their health and often got them into trouble with authority. So it made sense that, a year after the Englishman’s death, Doug Parkinson would honour the achievements of Cocker, backed by some of the finest R ‘n’ B musicians in the land. After just a handful of live sell-out shows and standing ovations, Doug Parkinson Honours Joe Cocker concerts are proof that this tribute is something special. “I’m a completely different singer to Joe Cocker,” Parkinson says. “Our styles are poles apart, yet the common perception is that we are very similar. The punters want to hear the songs again, sung by a voice that reminds them of the original.” Parkinson said he hasn’t attempted to copy Cocker’s twitchy visual antics, leaving that to his imitators. “It’s completely about the music – I like to think that somehow I’m helping to preserve his memory and the respect that is his due,” Parkinson added. The opening half of the show features Parkinson’s own impressive hits and favourites, giving audiences “both sides of the same coin”. Excited and impassioned are just two words to describe the unmistakable voice of Australian rock and soul legend Doug Parkinson. The multiple award-winner is known for his

hits including Dear Prudence, Without You, I’ll Be Around and The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore. Parkinson is well known for forming ‘in Focus’ in 1968, becoming the musician’s outfit of its time. Stage roles in The Who’s rock opera Tommy, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Ned Kelly followed. He collaborated and recorded two tracks for the cult film Stone and had another top 10 hit with Everlasting Love. During his extraordinary career, Parkinson
has appeared alongside many international stars including Paul Jones, The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Pointer Sisters, Thelma Houston and Randy Crawford. He also won roles in Big River, as The Big Bopper in the smash hit musical Buddy, Grease The Arena Spectacular, Happy Days and the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. Doug Parkinson Honours Joe Cocker is at Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 13 May.
Poker night to counter cancer Sports celebrities will lay their cards on the table at a charity poker night in North Geelong next month. Shane Warne, Billy Brownless, Brian Taylor and Brendan Fevola POKER: Australian are scheduled to champ Joe Hachem. attend Geelong’s All In For Charity at the Sphinx Hotel on 11 May. The event will raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Australian poker champion Joe Hachem’s management group has organised the “celebrity fundraising poker night” based on the internationally successful Texas Hold’em format. The Hachem version was becoming “one of Melbourne’s most sought after and high-profiled social fundraisers,” his company said. The company sought support from Geelong through either donations of fundraising items or buying tables of 10 or tickets for the Sphinx night. Patrons would vie for prizes worth over $50,000, the company said. The proceeds from the Geelong poker night would help NBCF “realise its vision of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.” More information about the Sphinx event is available at hachemgroup.com.au.

It’s all about the uncertain moves Geelong people know the relocation blues well. The city that’s never sure if it’s still a big country town, has had more than its fair share of talent feeling like its forced to relocate to the big smoke to get ahead. There will also be plenty who are familiar with the plaintive cry of “What have I done?” after a big move turned sour. Melbourne indie pop favourites experienced just that in their move from Perth four years ago, finding that the Victorian grass was not necessarily always greener. The various tribulations that ensued did make great fodder for the band’s new single, however, with plenty who will be able to relate. Relocation Blues is a bouncy, driving piece that lays it all out on the line with “stacks of energy and a searing dose of honesty”, as the band itself admits. It’s the first single from the band’s much anticipated second album, three years in the making. The lyrically forthright song marks a new beginning after a tumultuous time for the former Perth outfit. Heading across the Nullarbor in 2012 on the back of their highly touted debut album You’ll Turn Into Me and in search of a new start, Split Seconds, led by multi WAMI award winning vocalist Sean Pollard, were bright eyed and bushy tailed. Three years later they were two members down, waist deep in a home studio renovation project and struggling three quarters of the way through an album. Then, in a “hungover moment of clarity” came

TIMELY: Split Seconds bring its Relocation Blues tour to Geelong. Relocation Blues - a blow by blow account of the process of upping stumps and switching cities. With tongue firmly in cheek, Pollard takes us through the process with nods to local promoters, responsible service of alcohol, heading home for Christmas, Centrelink and much more. He sums it up best in the rollicking hook as he laments: “Nobody knows me at home anymore. Nobody knows that I’m here...“ but finds fist pumping redemption as he brings it home concluding “at least we stuck it out, at least we’re still here mates.“ It’s a hell of a trip. Split Seconds play the Aireys Pub, Aireys Inlet, with Gem Bones on 7 May.

LAST CHANCE: The Shifting Heart's cast, from top to bottom, Dan Eastwood, Ivana Hudlow Philippe Besancon, Tom Bartle and Theresa Lewis.
Fans of local theatre have one day left to attend the latest production of one of the city’s longestserving production troupes. Geelong Repertory Theatre Company will conclude its 10-date season of The Shifting Heart this Saturday after a penultimate show tonight. Geelong Rep’s second for the year, the show opened on 15 April to play over three weeks. The theatre company said The Shifting Heart combines historical aspects with contemporary themes. “Written in 1957 by Richard Beynon, it is an insight to the psychology of racism and its victims in the background of 1950s Collingwood, Melbourne,” the Rep said. “A popular Australian drama play studied in schools, (it’s) close to 60 years old but with issues that are sadly still relevant today.” The Rep said Judy Ellis was directing a cast featuring Phillip Besancon, Theresa Lewis, Tom Bartle, Ivana Hudlow, Dan Eastwood, Sarah Quirk, Steve Howell and Nick Frcek. The production winds up tonight and tomorrow at Woodbin Theatre, Coronation Street Geelong West. Both shows begin 7.30pm. The Rep said tickets were available through Geelong Performing Arts Centre.

The McEwan family reading. Children can enjoy stories, finger plays, songs and more at Noah’s Ark.
STAFF at Noah’s Ark consider themselves to be experts in early childhood development for children with disabilities and additional needs aged from infancy to eight. They aim to deliver the best therapy and education for their young charges. Its professional teams are led by Dr Kerry Bull, a specialist and researcher in autism spectrum disorders, who has provided training nationally and internationally. “Why Noah’s Ark? Ready to face the early challenges pertise in early childhood development, disabilities and additional needs. “Our service is delivered by a range of professionals and we listen to you, we provide individualised service based on your child’s and family’s needs within your chosen environment.” Meet the Geelong team at the new Geelong Library on Wednesday 11 May and Tuesday 17 May from 10.30am to 11.30am for stories and songs. Book by Monday 2 May on 5229 5327 or visit www.noahsarkinc.org.au.
A world without borders Mr Lindsay said SCCE takes care of the students’ school enrolment and other arrangements including their insurance. Local families of all sizes who might be available are encouraged to take up a global invitation to connect with another student and their family. As volunteer participants in the SCCE international cultural exchange program, host families are assisted and supported through the whole process. They are free to select the student according to age, nationality, interests and preferred duration. For more details call 1800 500 501 or email scceaust@scce.com.au or visit scce.com.au. 1225995-17-16
When it comes to bridging cultures, SCCE national director Rob Lindsay believes that everyone benefits. “The whole family, not just the individual, stands to gain from the actions of one youth living half a world away, one young student who whom they will come to know very well and have real connections with,” he said. Come July, Scandinavian and Europe exchange students will arrive to experience a different culture. They have chosen Australia to discover more about how Australians go about their lives as they themselves become Aussie students for a term or two at a high school close to volunteer host families.

Newspapers remain a popular medium for job hunters searching for their next role despite the wide choice of domestic and international alternatives online. Emma data shows 1.4 million job seekers use print newspapers each month. Job seekers from certain industries are more likely to use print newspapers for job hunting. Those looking for work in public administration are 46 percent more likely to use print newspaper’s employment sections with similar results for mining (44 percent), and teachers and lecturers (27 percent) more likely to use print. Businesses looking to find the right candidate should employ print newspapers as part of their search, or risk missing out on a large pool of potential candidates.

No matter if it’s a competition vehicle or the daily drive, performance and economy matters, as Dalton Automotive know well. It’s the passion behind competing in motor sports that helps the team at Dalton Automotive ensure that every car drives out of the workshop in tip top form. Chris Dalton says Dalton Automotive has been servicing and repairing vehicles from everyday vehicles to race cars for the last 22 years. “We offer a full range of services from a basic handbook service to full engine rebuilds,” Chris explains. “New car servicing is a speciality and it doesn’t affect any factory warranties, all carried out to handbook specifications.” The VACC accredited member and repairer offers services from just $139. But it’s the chassis dyno that gives Dalton Automotive the edge on most workshops, enabling Chris and his staff the ability to fine tune any car. Chris says a dyno tune can add 10 to 15 per cent to performance and power and five to 10 per cent to the economy. Dalton Automotive also handles an increasing number of diesel powered cars, including performance upgrades, servicing and dyno tuning. “We love it, we are passionate about what we do,” Chris says. It’s why customers with modified cars also bring Chris their daily drive for everything from service and repair work to major rebuilds. And given that Chris still races his Mazda RX7, Dalton Automotive are also rotary specialists. Dalton Automotive is at 10 Wood St, South Geelong phone 5224 2708.

SPORT Some salmon are surfacing ON THE BITE Chris Pitman
BACKBONE: Matthew Scarlett has helped stiffen Geelong's defence.
Scarlett steadies side By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN The steadying hand of defensive coach Matthew Scarlett was apparent in Geelong’s change of fortunes against Port Adelaide last week. In all the hullabaloo over scuffles and cheap shots, Geelong’s ability for the first time in a long time to change the momentum of a game was overlooked. That will be one of the most pleasing aspects of the win for coach Chris Scott and will stand the Cats in good stead this season. The first half of the second quarter against Port Adelaide was an arm wrestle. Geelong kicked its six comeback goals all in the second half of the quarter, generating its own momentum after spending 16 minutes quelling the Power. Scarlett was displeased by Geelong’s inability
to negate and then reverse opposition momentum during the NAB Challenge. Apart from the renewed engine room with the addition of Patrick Dangerfield, checking momentum swings will prove to be the most valuable improvement for the Cats this season. Gold Coast has beaten bottom-huggers Essendon, Fremantle and Carlton then lost to Brisbane and North Melbourne, so its form line is average at best. The danger lies with Suns forward Tom Lynch, who leads the goal kicking with 22 majors after five rounds. The good news is that in Tom Lonergan and Harry Taylor, Geelong has the talls to negate him. Both sides are top two when it comes to marks inside 50 so far this season, Geelong averaging 15.8 per game, while the Suns are next with 15. The intercept marking of Lonergan and Tay-
lor, with the return of Lachie Henderson, will help swing that further in Geelong’s favour. Suns vice-captain Dion Prestia will again be missing as will Michael Rischitelli, leaving the midfield short-handed. Geelong’s revved-up engine room will look to take full advantage, even with former Cat Gary Ablett racking up his normal 30 or so possessions. Skipper Joel Selwood and Dangerfield are gaining ever more assistance from Cam Guthrie, Mitch Duncan and Josh Caddy. Dangerfield has helped redress last season’s imbalance in the contested possession count and at the clearances, areas where the Cats struggled last year. Playing in the comfy confines of Simonds Stadium in a Saturday night game will also suit the Cats, with the prospect of a sell-out of the restricted capacity on the cards.
Day of the long boards signals start of state titles Victoria’s best long-boarder surfers will gather at Ocean Grove this weekend for the beginning of state titles competition. Organisers said the first of the HIF Longboard Titles’ two rounds would feature over 50 competitors in age groups from under-18 to over 65. Local surfers will feature heavily among the favourites, including Australian Women’s Longboard Champion Emma Webb, of Jan Juc, and former national junior champion Ben Considine, of Barwon Heads. Reigning age-group champions John Lane, John Ayton and Greg Brown, all of Jan Juc, will also compete. The event is part of the key selection process for a Victorian Longboard Team to compete in national titles at Coffs Harbour in August. “This is one of the best events on our calendar,” said Surfing Victoria chief Adam Robertson. “It has a fantastic community feel to it, while still showing why Victoria has one of the top longboarding teams in the country!” Surfing Victoria’s official surf forecaster, Coastalwatch PLUS, has forecast perfect conditions with a small long-range swell and offshore winds all day. Point Impossible will host the second round on 14 and 15 May.
Corio Bay continued providing a wide variety of fish over the past week. Large schools of Australian salmon erupted on the surface at times, taking soft plastics cast into the commotion. Some of the fish reached 1.5kg. Other anglers had success on the bay’s pinkie snapper and flathead while casting soft plastics in tight around structures. Stephen Goodfellow ventured out from Point Richards in ideal conditions on Monday to boat a 5.5kg snapper. St Leonards was popular over the Anzac Day long weekend, with bag-limit captures possible any time of the day. Jacob Smith and I fished in 5m a little south of the yacht club later Saturday afternoon for a catch of 32 whiting to 42cm in a one-hour session. Squid were caught at the mouth of Swan Bay. Specimens to 1kg took size three jigs worked down deep. Garfish were also biting, especially on the whiting grounds off St Leonards. The Barwon River estuary still held limited numbers of elephant fish. Anglers fishing the slack tide in the upper reaches enjoyed the best results. Plenty of juvenile whiting, salmon, mullet and trevally also kept anglers busy on the estuary over the long weekend, with prawns and pippies dynamite baits. Gummy sharks and snapper held in reasonable numbers off Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Large baits such as fish fillet or squid caught gummies to 14kg, while some thumping salmon were taken on metal slugs cast into schools feeding on the surface. Anglers who spun from rock platforms down the coast banked fantastic numbers of salmon, with the fish at times moving in tight to the rocks. Sea Iron lures worked well due to their robust finish. Portland and Port Fairy attracted plenty of attention over the long weekend, with southern bluefin tuna in excellent numbers in water from 40m out to the shelf. Small skirted lures were ideal on the tuna in close, along with Rapala X-raps. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir again dominated freshwater fishing. John Stojanovski caught a 48.5cm redfin while casting hardbody lures from the rock wall, while Josh Whitford caught a fat 40cm rainbow trout with a similar method. Bradley Cox worked the lake margins last Friday for a catch of six redfin to 35cm while slowly working plastics along the edges of weed beds. Josh Smith fished Shepparton with purple spinnerbaits from his kayak, catching numerous Murray cod to 62cm and yellowbelly to 45cm. Next week should be worth fishing for whiting at St Leonards, while freshwater anglers persisting with Wurdee Boluc could land trout and redfin.
REDDIE OR NOT: John Stojanovski with a big redfin from Wurdee Boluc Reservoir. LONGVIEW: Over-60s champion John Ayton in action. 29 GEELONG INDY Friday, 29 April, 2016
