■ ASIO intelligence officer denies Haider police were kept in the dark...
Light on spies By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS AN ASIO team leader has denied police were not shown “significant” intelligence before a fatal meeting between two counter-terrorism cops and Endeavour Hills teen Numan Haider. An officer, who gave evidence under her Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation pseudonym of Natalie Mayfair, told a coronial inquiry on 27 April that the material such as Haider’s Facebook profile photo of him in camouflage clothing, a balaclava and holding a Shahada flag, did not significantly alter Asio’s risk assessment. On a TV link, which could not be seen by the court’s public gallery, she told Coroner John Olle
at the County Court that she had assessed it was too unsafe to send Asio officers to meet Haider because he had apparently procured a knife. Asio instead met with state and federal police to discuss Haider where it was agreed that Joint Counter Terrorism Team police would contact Haider. Days later on 23 September 2014, Haider stabbed two JCTT police officers and was fatally shot when he stabbed them during a meeting at Endeavour Hills police station. At a 19 September briefing, Asio produced a briefing note to the JCTT, including intelligence that Haider had a knife and had shown interest in
obtaining a balaclava, a taser, a big knife and a small knife that could be easily hidden. Other intelligence provided to police included Haider being told that his passport was cancelled by authorities on 16 September, Ms Mayfield said. Within hours of that news, Haider apparently carried out internet searches for Holsworthy Army Base, home-made gun silencers, firecrackers wrapped with metal sheet, Tony Abbott’s next visit to Victoria and AFL football. At least four police officers at the Asio briefing have since testified to coroner Iain West that they weren’t shown Haider’s most recent
Facebook posts. The material included Haider’s Facebook profile photo and posts calling police “dogs” who had “declared war” on Islam, as well as derogatory sexual suggestions to federal police and Asio. Ms Mayfield said she passed around at least one copy of the Facebook material at the briefing. The pages were handed back up to her by the end of the meeting, she told the Coroner. Ms Mayfield stated she would not have considered including the Facebook material in the briefing note, which was emailed to the JCTT that day. Continued on page 3

Council vows to fight mosque plan appeal By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS CASEY’S Mayor Sam Aziz denied the council caved in to Islamophobic elements as a proposed mosque in Narre Warren North was rejected amid vocal protests at a council meeting on 26 April. A prominent police and security detail kept watch as an overflow of mosque supporters raised posters decrying fascism or with slogans such as “Mosque: Yes. Racism: No.” After the council’s unanimous rejection of the 457-person mosque at 365-367 Belgrave-Hallam Road, a chant of “The mosque is welcome, racists are not” rang through the public gallery and out the door. There was no hint of Bendigo-like violence between a staunch and largely-silent residents group who applauded the council’s decision and the protestors. At the meeting, the council vowed to throw “every resource” at defending its decision at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Supreme Court, if the proponent Saarban Islamic Trust appeals. Cr Aziz told the meeting that this was “one of the most significant” planning decisions in recent Casey history because of the impact on resident amenity and the enivironment as well as more than 1000 “legitimate” objections from Casey residents. He thanked Casey’s residents who objected respectfully and with “genuine concern” but was disappointed with the applicant for his “unfounded comments” in the media. “For you to be shocked by the content of the report is at best mischievous or at worst malicious. “You have not endeared yourself in making these comments.” Cr Aziz took aim at the “rubbish” published by media that the council had bowed to pressure from fringe political and ideological groups. He said those groups - both left and right - had been “wasting their time”. It was only Casey’s residents that had been heard.
Mosque supporters vent their anger after the decision. Picture: GARY SISSONS Warren North residents said to me: radicalisation and terrorism risks of Islamic mosques should be considering in decision making.” Cr Crestani later told Star News she created the posters because she wasn’t allowed to raise these questions at the meeting. She said chanting protesters didn’t know the meaning of racism. “Racism doesn’t have anything to do with Islam. It’s not a race, it’s an ideology.” Narre North residents later told Star News that their objections were based on conserving their town’s rural character and were offended with being branded as racists.
A member of the crowd holds up a sign to support the mosque. “It wouldn’t matter if it was a church or a mosque,” several told Star News. A Casey resident who supported the mosque said she wanted peace and unity in Australia. “I want my daughter to grow up in a faith where she’s not regarded as evil. “We have the same values as anyone else.” Saarban Islamic Trust spokesman Saeed Muhammad said Cr Aziz’s condemnation of the trust was “overly aggressive”. “He seemed to stress the point that we will challenge you.” The trust is expected to challenge the council’s decision at VCAT.
Haider spies give evidence at coronial inquest “It had been my experience that offensive and derogatory comments about Asio, the AFP and state police, similar to those made by Numan, were quite common amongst individuals of interest to Asio,” she said in her tendered statement. Officer A - who was one of the two police stabbed by Haider four days after the meeting - told the hearing in March that he had been unaware of the “absolutely relevant” Facebook material.
“I was operating under the proviso that Asio would provide real-time intelligence,” Officer A had told the Coroner. “I think it unlikely we’d meet him in those circumstances had ... full intelligence been revealed.” Under questioning on this, Ms Mayfair said: “People can make comments like that in hindsight. “In terms of what he needed to know, I 1202687-PB45-15
Continued from page 1 Among her reasons was that Haider’s Facebook ID was included in the briefing note and nearly all the posts were publicly accessible. No one at the meeting “appeared to attach great significance” to the posts, Ms Carrington said. The posts didn’t “significantly alter” Asio’s assessment of Haider’s risk.

Drug arrest AN ENDEAVOUR Hills man has been arrested after a large amount of ice and GHB were allegedly found in his car during a police intercept. The 28-year-old had been pulled over in his Mitsubishi Lancer by police during a “routine” interception on Hallam North Road, Hallam, about 3.50am on 27 April, police said. During a search of his car, the Endeavour Hills officers discovered the trafficable quantities of drugs. The man was charged with trafficking and possession of methamphetamine, trafficking and possessing of GHB and possessing a prohibited weapon. He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 10 June.

Pro-mosque demonstrator's make their voices heard before the decision.
Four Oaks Ward councillor Rafal Kaplon emphasised the planning reasons for the decision - the development’s scale and intensity in the rural foothills and green wedge area, as well as VicRoads’ objections to its traffic impact. The 16-metre minaret would be an “overbearing” presence from various vantage points, Cr Kaplon said. The significant non-urban Narre Warren North area should be regarded as a “finite resource” that would be “lost forever” if developed. His message was undercut by fellow ward councillor and Rise Up Australia identity Rosalie Crestani, who held up posters to the gallery during the vote. One of her posters stated: “Narre

can’t comment on police procedure in that regard.” A former intelligence officer, who gave evidence under her Asio name of Julie Carrington, told the inquiry on 27 April that she was sure the Facebook material had been raised. She recalled an “awkward feeling” during the briefing about some of the derogatory posts.

MORE than $600,000 in drainage works should safeguard Dandenong’s Palm Plaza from flooding. At their 26 April meeting, Greater Dandenong councillors awarded the $658,479 tender for the Cleeland Street project to Comar Construction. Engineering services director Julie Reid explained that during flood conditions, overland flow from the road reservation eventually ended up at Palm Plaza, as in the year 2011. She said the works would reduce the annual chance of flooding from 20 per cent to five per cent. A council report said recent hydraulic modelling highlighted deficiencies within the existing drainage network, so improvements are being implemented in stages. This funding is for Stage 1, changing overflow connections from south of King Street to Herbert Street from 900 millimetre diameter to 1650mm. Stage 1 is jointly funded through the council’s 2015 to 2016 drainage capital improvement program and the Federal Government Roads to Recovery Programme.

Charlotte posts it for the homeless and pays it forward ON SATURDAY 16 April I went to the city to a small place called The Soup Place. Not only do they sell lots of soup but for $3.50 you can ‘pay it forward’ and they use that money to donate a bowl of soup and some bread to the homeless people in Melbourne. When you donate a meal you also get to leave a Post-It Notes message for the person who receives your meal to make their day a bit brighter and to make them feel cared for. We met a guy called Chris who runs the Humans in Melbourne Facebook page, and he saw that my mum and I were buying two meals to pay it forward. He talked to me about how this really helps many unfortunate people. He was very impressed that someone of my age would want to do this, and that I thought that this was a really good idea. It really got me thinking about how a bowl of hot soup on a very cold night would be so important to someone who didn’t have a home or a warm bed to sleep in.
COMMUNITY
VOICE
CHARLOTTE O’SULLIVAN LYNDALE GREENS PRIMARY SCHOOL CAPTAIN
I have been reading about this and I think our school can help make a difference. The Junior School Council and I are running a campaign in the school called Small Change For a Small Change where we are asking students to go home and ask their parents to help find a collection of small change such as five, 10, 20 and even 50 cent pieces to donate to the homeless. To see how easy it was, I got my family to collect some spare 10 and five cent pieces and we collected $10.50, which is worth three meals. If I can collect $10.50 that easily, I am sure that you can collect the same, if not more than that.
You can be as generous as you like and, remember, this all goes to a very good cause. I know that not everyone will be able to donate money but every little bit helps and it would be really nice to know that all of the money goes directly to helping someone. We are coming into winter and it is very cold at night. The largest number of bowls was donated by Encounter Lutheran College of Adelaide and they donated 114 bowls. I think that our primary school could do it better and I believe that we could donate at least 200 bowls with 200 friendly Post-It Notes messages if we tried. With about 600 children at Lyndale Greens and including the school staff, that would only mean that every person needs to collect $1.20 worth of small change to reach about 220 meals. So, please, look under the cushions of the couch, under the seats of your car, on your dressers and bedside tables. You’ll be surprised how much you can scrape together. We will go around to the classrooms and
Lyndale Greens teachers Ashlin Saggers and Leonie Haggett with grade six student Charlotte O'Sullivan. 153382 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS collect the money that you have collected each day and then see how much money we can raise. I think that as a school captain it is very important to try and make a difference and this is how I would like to start, by making a small change with small change.
LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 20 April 1916 Red Cross Dispute War Council Proposals AT A meeting of the Dandenong Shire Council on Thursday, a communication came to hand from the State War Council. It was evident that a public meeting should be convened to discuss the matter and appoint a committee. Cr Abbott and Cr Keys felt the position of affairs very keenly, as personal friends of theirs were concerned in the dispute. They thought the present committee would refuse to hand over control to another body. It would be much better to allow matters to remain as they were, until the annual meeting was held,
when the trouble would be overcome. However, this action or non-action was lost and the motion by Crs Harris and Groves was carried, and it was agreed that a public meeting be convened by the president. 50 years ago 3 May 1966 ‘Tin Shed’ will get facelift Spending at last! THE ‘tin shed’ at Shepley Oval, temporary home of Dandenong Football Club, will be brought to minimum standards required by Health Regulations at council expense. The decision made by council last week follows months of argument about the building - whether it should be brought to the standard required for public use - who should
pay for it - and when it could be done, if at all. Last year the football club was granted use of the shed after losing its ‘home’ in Cunningham House. Three months ago, the council decided to do some necessary work on the shed and its approaches, and left the football club to connect water and provide kitchen facilities but refused to spend any more money. 20 years ago 6 May 1996 Wedge Support GREATER Dandenong Council has supported plans to build houses on Keysborough’s green wedge provided there is no “further erosion”. The council’s position, released at a special meeting last Thurs-
day, is a milestone in the four-year saga about the 1344 hectare area bounded by Springvale and Cheltenham Roads, the Dingley Bypass reservation, Scoresby Freeway reservation, Dandenong Creek and the Mordialloc Creek drain. The council will support a highquality residential development north of Hutton Road and west of Perry Road and will accept low-density housing east of Perry Road and south of Hutton/Greens roads, provided half of the land is reserved for public open space, including funding for recreation and conservation programs. 5 years ago 2 May 2011 On a high: $10m school boost PREMIER Ted Baillieu has prom-
ised $10 million for the third stage of Dandenong High School’s redevelopment. Mr Baillieu visited the school last Wednesday to announce the funding and promise another $100 million state-wide over four years for maintenance works at state schools. He also met principal Martin Culkin and toured the school grounds. Mr Baillieu said it was important to fund stage three of Dandenong High School’s regeneration. “This school now has more than 2000 students in an area with a financially-challenged community,” he said. Mr Baillieu praised the school for its “innovative” approach to learning. - Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

Roads get budget win MOTORISTS in the City of Casey were big winners in this year’s State Budget with $154.5 million allocated to upgrade Thompsons Road. The injection will allow Thompsons Road to be widened to two lanes in each direction between Dandenong - Frankston Road and Evans Road, and between Narre Warren Cranbourne Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road. The project will also include replacing the existing roundabout at the Thompsons Road and Western Port Highway intersection with traffic lights, to reduce travel delays by 10 minutes. Pedestrians will benefit too, with 10 kilometres of path to be constructed along Thompsons Road, with connections to public transport and local shops. The budget also included $40 million to duplicate 1.2 kilometres of Hallam Road between Ormond Road and the South Gippsland Highway. The intersection of South Gippsland Highway, Hallam Road and Evans Road will receive a major upgrade, allowing Evans Road to be reopened in its entirety, reconnecting Lyndhurst and Lynbrook. Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the council was thrilled with the State Government’s announcement of almost $200 million to improve Casey’s roads. “The council has been campaigning for improvements to Thompsons and Hallam roads for years. These important arterial road improvements will benefit residents and visitors travelling in and around our city, particularly those commuting to and from work.“ For those who travel by public transport, the budget included 50 extra parking spaces at Hallam Station and 110 extra spaces at Berwick. The government will also spend a further $300,000 on removing graffiti from noise walls
Traffic snarles on Thompsons Road will be relieved with a $154 million commitment in the State Budget. along the Monash Freeway between CityLink and Pakenham. Casey Hospital patients will benefit from an elective surgery funding boost with a new highacuity unit for severely ill patients as well as getting a share of a state-wide $335 million injection for elective surgeries and capital works over four years. The government made a $50 million allocation to a special fund for building community facilities in Melbourne’s fastest-growing suburbs, including Casey. The money will be spent on community centres, parks and playgrounds. The Growing Suburbs Fund, previously known as the Interface Growth Fund, will build on the 34 projects already underway Outer suburban libraries will also recieve a $22.2 million injection to upgrade and improve libraries. Councils and regional library services will receive funding for upgrades and new books under the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program (LLIP) and the Premiers’ Reading Challenge.

HEAD out in orange on Wednesday 11 May to show support for Greater Dandenong SES. The Wear Orange Wednesday, or WOW, initiative is part of National Volunteer week. Students and teachers can wear something orange to school and make a gold coin donation towards replacing the unit’s 11-year-old four-wheel drive. “After the event, we will do a thank you visit to each school that participates,” Greater Dandenong acting controller Shane Bolton said. Greater Dandenong SES Unit's acting controller Shane Bolton and deputy controller Katherine Pawlukowski get into the orange spirit. 153085 DOES the Dandenong South industrial area need a railway station? Councillor Matthew Kirwan thinks so and at the 26 April council meeting asked for the possibility to be discussed alongside the Abbotts Road level crossing removal. “A railway station there with a bus interchange would do much to deal with the issue of jobs in that area not being accessible,” he said. The council’s business group manager Paul Kearsley said the idea hadn’t previously been flagged so was not currently part of discussions. The Journal in recent years has reported support for reopening the disused General Motors station to serve the area. ANZAC Day march attendees were left with no doubt about John Wells’s feelings on standing to attention. The Dandenong RSL sub-branch president
said at the 25 April service: “If you have difficulty standing, don’t. That’s an order.” “Please don’t be heroic. If you need to sit, sit. “There’s still plenty of chairs. “If you faint, don’t sue.” A MAN in handcuffs in Halpin Way was a surprising sight for council-goers leaving the Tuesday 26 April meeting at the Dandenong Civic Centre. But the incident, just after 9pm, wasn’t as dramatic as it appeared. Police said the man was ordered to stay away from a hotel but returned and brought with him the very behaviour that earnt him the ban. Officers attended the Scott Street’s Nu Hotel after the man started mouthing off at bouncers. They arrested him and he was bailed to appear in court at a later date.

Pill popping THE State Government has announced a real-time prescription monitoring system, weeks after the State Coroner called for its urgent implementation. The system rollout, announced as part of the 2016/17 budget, is expected to reduce overdoses due to “prescription shopping” from multiple doctors and pharmacies, according to the government. Clinicians at 1900 GP clinics, 1300 pharmacies and 200 hospitals will be able to do an on-the-spot check before prescribing or dispensing medicines that are at high risk of misuse. About 90 Victorian lives in the next five years could be saved as a result. As part of a $30 million package, the government announced extra counselling and addiction treatment services, as well as training and support for doctors and pharmacists to identify and help prescription drug misusers early.
The new scheme will include oxycodone and morphine, with upcoming talks with medical and pharmacy groups on how to best include other drugs such as diazepam. Health Minister Jill Hennessy said more Victorians died from prescription drug overdoses (330 deaths in 2015) than road crashes. “We can’t afford to wait any longer to take action.” Since 2012, there have been 21 coronial findings calling for the implementation of a Victorian real-time prescription monitoring system. The most recent was on 6 April into the death of a Hampton Park man who shopped for prescribed diazepam sedatives from eight GPs and a community health service - on top of his methadone treatment. “(The man) was clearly engaged in prescription shopping and at the time of his death, as is the case even today, there were no effective tools available for prescribing doctors to establish
who else a patient had attended for scripts,” State Coroner Audrey Jamieson wrote. According to statistics cited by the State Coroner, 65 people died of a drug overdose in Casey between 2009/15 - the sixth-highest metro area rate in the state. Of those, pharmaceuticals (55) were involved more than illicit drugs (22) or alcohol (12). Some of these deaths included combinations of the three categories. Among the biggest killers are the anti-anxiety drug diazepam, opioid painkillers such as codeine, methadone and oxycodone, and anti-depressants. Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association chief executive Sam Biondo said the government should be applauded for the “positive move”. Mr Biondo said the government had to deal with an expected rising demand for treatment. It should also mount a broader education campaign on the issue, he said.
Robbery victim's close call A DANDENONG man was punched in the mouth and chased through the streets during an attempted robbery. The 37-year-old victim was walking on Robinson Street, Dandenong, about 9.40pm on Thursday 14 April and stopped at a bus stop to speak to a friend. Greater Dandenong CIU
Detective Senior Constable Nic Hayes said the man saw two men and a woman approaching from Mason Street as he continued his walk. The would-be thieves approached him, demanded money, and punched him in the mouth when he said he didn’t have any.
They made further demands for cash and the victim’s phone before he fled to Scott Street. Sen Const Hayes said they gave chase but the victim escaped. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Claim reject By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS FOUR ex-Catholic Education Office employees have denied Cardinal George Pell’s claims that he had been deceived over former paedophile priest Peter Searson’s disturbing activities at Holy Family School, Doveton. The witnesses fronted Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse on 27 April in response to Cardinal Pell’s claims that CEO personnel were “very keen to keep the lid on the situation” ahead of a briefing with concerned Holy Family teachers in 1989. It was a situation that included Searson being accused of child sex abuse, animal cruelty and keeping unregistered firearms during his tenure
from 1984-97. Monsignor Thomas Doyle, who was then director of CEO, told the inquiry he was “very disappointed” in Cardinal Pell’s claims. “I don’t think they were true.” In a statement, Monsignor Doyle said the CEO would have “welcomed decisive action” on Searson. “In Cardinal Pell’s terms we wanted to ‘take the lid off’ the situation and have it addressed.” In letters prepared by lawyers for the Archdiocese of Melbourne, former CEO consultants Allan Dooley and Peter Annett stated they weren’t aware of any reluctance to be frank with Cardinal Pell about Searson.
They also stated they were unaware of a desire to protect then-Archbishop Little. Former CEO zone co-ordinator Catherine Briant, in a separate statement, also denied any cover-up. Cardinal Pell had told the commission this year that CEO staff were “covering up” in an effort to protect then-Archbishop Frank Little over his inaction against Searson. “The line that was given to me was that certainly there were problems but they were insufficient to remove Searson. “I think they would have covered up from me, as I mentioned earlier, because they would have feared that I would not accept the status quo.” The inquiry in Sydney continues.

IN A way, Doveton College went way out-ofbounds for three days this month. The college’s students and early-learning pupils were uprooted from their campus, instead holding reading classes and self-defence demos in front of shoppers at nearby Autumn Place. Community engagement co-ordinator Alan McCarthy said the pop-up classrooms led to several new enrolments for its adult computer, craft and literacy programs. “We’re not just a school and early-learning centre but there are opportunities for adults whether they have students at the school or not.” Aside from the courses, the college is hosting a free community justice panel on rental disputes on 6 May from 9.30-11.30am. Spy was watching Haider By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS ENDEAVOUR Hills teenager Numan Haider was under the watch of intelligence agency Asio for months before he stabbed two police officers in 2014, a coronial inquest has been told. A former Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation case officer known as Julie Carrington told the hearing on 27 April that she oversaw phone tapping and surveillance intelligence on the 18-year-old. In May 2014, Asio zoned in on a mobile phone user - later identified as Haider - who attended the suspect Al Furqan Islamic bookshop in Springvale South. The shop was known as a hub for extreme Islam discourse, and its past attendees had flown to hot-spot Syria, Ms Carrington said. Asio knew the phone user was allegedly trying to avoid scrutiny from authorities and wanted to fight in Syria. In June a telephone intercept warrant was obtained for the phone which was subscribed to an address of a vacant lot. Ms Carrington stated that from early taps Haider seemed “security aware” and supportive of Islamic State. He attempted to conceal “nefarious” plans to travel to Syria with an associate whose identity was suppressed by coroner Iain West. This seemed at odds with his family’s version that he was seeking a passport to travel with them to Germany and Afghanistan, Ms Carrington said. Ms Carrington and another Asio officer visited Haider’s family on 31 July with the hope of disrupting his plans to travel to Syria. The officers identified themselves and explained that they did not have power to arrest Haider.
Spies were tracking Numan Haider as he went to attack two police officers. They told the family that Haider was not in any trouble but were concerned about young people being radicalised for “violent jihad” overseas. During the talks, Haider seemed “sheepish”, kept his head down and gave short answers when spoken to about Al Furqan associates, Ms Carrington said. Haider told the officers that he had stopped going to the bookstore two months ago. Friends had told him that Islamic State had done “good things” in Iraq and Syria. Ms Carrington said the family had
confronted one associate, who they considered a bad influence on an increasingly “religious” Haider. They told Asio the intervention was successful and that Haider wasn’t being radicalised, Ms Carrington said. According to telephone taps, Haider was not happy with the strict way his family were dealing with him. Ms Carrington said Haider - in his last month alive - was spending time from the family home without informing his parents, had an interest in obtaining weapons and in then-Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s upcoming visits to Melbourne. On 18 September he had waved a
Shahada flag in Dandenong Plaza. Five days later, the Joint Counter Terrorism Team of federal and state police met Haider at Endeavour Hills police station. Ms Carrington’s role was to pass on information to the Joint Counter Terrorism Team from physical and telephone surveillance on Haider’s whereabouts and whether he was with associates on the day. She passed on that Haider was “on his way” leaving a Hungry Jack’s store on the way to the rendezvous with officers at Endeavour Hills police station. She, however, did not have realtime monitoring of a call Haider made
to an associate before he left the store, the inquest was told. In the call, Haider said “dogs (police) came to my house” and “my stupid parents let them”. Ms Carrington did monitor subsequent calls between Haider and a police officer he was set to meet that night. Minutes later in a dark car park outside the police station, Haider met the two JCTT officers. He stabbed them both before one of them was able to shoot him dead. The inquest at the County Court continues.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Students try trades skills By GEORGIA WESTGARTH TRADESMEN talking trades stole the show at this year’s South East Careers Expo. In its eighth year, the try a trade and careers day on Tuesday 19 April had 3000 young and adult learners walk through the Cranbourne Turf Club. Participants could try their hand at bricklaying, dentistry, floristry, auto, carpentry and plumbing among other trades and SELLEN CEO Andrew Simmons said the high quality displays were “unbelievable”. “We had about 30 schools attend along with mature aged students looking to change careers or courses and migrants from AMES,” Mr Simmons said. “Exhibitors couldn’t believe how many came through and were running out of brochures.” It was the expo’s largest spread of exhibitors, rivalling the Melbourne Career Expo, Mr Simmons said. “A lot of local schools are coming to us rather than going into the city, because it’s local and a lot of exhibitors are doing the same,” he said. SELLEN hopes to engage more agricultural businesses at their next event, but Mr Simmons said the main thing was the students and “they’re coming in and asking the right questions”.

Film dreams come to life By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS BUDDING film makers from Doveton College have trod the red carpet and dominated an international film-making competition. Four films from the Doveton College Live project were nominated in this year’s Child KidzFlicks awards. Two of them, Dreams Come Alive (best script) and The Haunting Hour (best sound), won their categories. As a treat, brothers Peter, 10, and Joel, 14, were flown up to Sydney by award organisers Bardic Studios to collect the trophies. On the way to the ceremony, the boys stopped off for a personal tour of the UTS film-making studios with animator Deborah Cameron. Gene Geoffrey, a film maker who heads the project, described the winning animated films as sophisticated in content and technique. About five students aged between 10 and 15 were involved from concept to production, plotting scripts, moulding plasticine characters, writing music as well as filming the short works. “I really love the way they connect with these stories. They have very clear visions of what their animation is,” Mr Geoffrey said. “It’s very time consuming work. It takes months to make and they come back with new ideas each week - it shows how much they think on it.” Dreams Come Alive features a motley crew of characters including a skeletal Big Foot and a potion-mixing scientist who were seeking friendships and eventually meet in a nirvana dreamworld. Mr Geoffrey said the The Haunting Hour captured the creepy mood as one falls asleep at night. “It’s quite unnerving what comes out of young people’s minds,” he said. The works show the value in philanthropist
Peter and Joel with their awards and Malcolm McMahon from the Doveton Live Team. 153494. Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
Julius Colman’s investment in the college’s animated film and music program Doveton College Live. It’s engaged the students, giving many from disadvantaged backgrounds a sense of achievement, Mr Geoffrey said. The college boasts state-of-the-art equipment such as SLR cameras, dolly tracks, Mac lab with
a suite of film-making software and a fitted-out sound recording studio. There are even 3-D printers to create animated characters’ heads and dedicated teachers on hand to help make costumes in their own time. Over the past two years, works from Doveton College have won best film at the Australian Teachers of Media awards.
“Not all of these students will become animators,” Mr Geoffrey said. “That’s not the point. “It’s about using teamwork and communication to create something. “These are the skills you need in any walk of life.”

Don's winning ways for club By RUSSELL BENNETT THERE was barely a corner of the community that Pastor Don Cameron didn't touch. The Cornerstone Contact Centre coordinator died on 13 March following a six-week battle with aggressive cancer, and among the many community groups he served in a remarkable life was the Casey Cobras Football Club. Just under a fortnight ago, the Cobras played a memorial match in honour of Don, with his wife Jo proudly watching on from the sidelines. It was as though Don was doing the same from above, as the RecLink side dominated Collingwood 25.6 (156) to 9.8 (62). Casey's president - and its only ever coach - Gary Lambert was a great mate of Don's, and described the win over Collingwood as one of the best in Cobras history. It's a remarkable statement, given the team had only lost three games in three years leading up to its 2016 campaign. After dropping a recent match by around 80 points, they stormed out of the blocks against Collingwood and were never headed after running through a banner dedicated to Don. "This would have been Don's 13th season at the club," Gary said. "He became our president and for the past decade he's been the secretary and even got out there, rolled his sleeves up and played quite a few games for us. "For someone who'd never really played in his life, he wasn't too bad a footy player! "The community really respected him and the players definitely did. "Even though Don was a religious man he never came down to try and preach his church to the players. "He was just there whenever they needed him - even things like writing ref-
erences out for when they'd go to court, he'd do it. "Don meant a lot to me, just with the way he was in life. I'm not a church person or anything like that but I had so much respect for the way he carried himself." Many of the Cobras have done it tough, or still are. The RecLink completion is designed for socially disadvantaged people, such as those with problems with alcohol or substance abuse, mental illness or who're homeless. Anyone can play - footy is just a great release. But on the verge of the 2016 season, the Cobras - which was set up a little over 15 years ago in Doveton as the Casey Kangaroos - is desperately on the lookout for more players and community support. The future of the club is in jeopardy. Make no mistake - this side is used to winning, having won premiership, after premiership, after premiership - but winning isn't the be all and end all. The love of the game, and mateship, is. Gary knows that better than anyone. With the prospect of an AFL umpiring career ahead of him, his life was turned upside down in a 1992 car crash. "It pretty much took my whole life away from me - I went through serious depression and that type of stuff, but it (the club) has helped me in my own mental self," he said. "I've been here since day one and I've got a good relationship with a lot of these guys. They can ring me up at any time of night and they know that. If they're struggling they can ring me and we'll have a talk." The Cobras are based at Lawson Poole Reserve in Cranbourne, and play every second Wednesday during football season. For more information or to pledge support call Gary on 0425 763 072 or email jaygee5@bigpond.com.

Cause close to the heart By JARROD POTTER WEARING its unwavering stance, St John’s Old Collegians Football Club will don the white ribbon and aim to defeat domestic violence on 21 May The club will swap its black and green traditional gear for a one-off white guernsey for the round seven home match against Eltham. Supporting White Ribbon, the JOCS will prominently place the ribbon on the heart of each player because it’s a message that needs to be near and dear to everyone in Greater Dandenong and beyond. Defeating more than its Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) rivals, St John’s vice-captain Liam O’Connor said the club will never give up on the cause to stamp out violence against women. “It’s gotten to the point now that we have the white ribbon jumper to really make a statement that this is what we stand for,” O’Connor said. “No one should be subject to domestic violence, especially women, that’s the big thing that everyone was taught as a kid - don’t touch girls. “I just reckon it’s a cause that everyone should be behind - we started the White Ribbon Day Luncheon about three or four years ago now and year after year it’s just been getting bigger.” The JOCs will host their annual White Ribbon Day Luncheon on the day with tickets still available from the club. “May 21 is the game against Eltham out here where we will be wearing the strip and, I mean, it’s always a cracker of a game against them regardless,” O’Connor said. “But being able to represent, not only St John’s but the entire commu-

and take away it’s important message. “It’s important to raise the awareness outside of our football club, we have a lot of people who come in, not involved in the club at all with family, friends, friends of friends who come
to the luncheon to support the cause,” Costas said. “It’s really important that we include the wider community and not just the football club itself and it brings a lot of people together and
raises awareness.” For more information on the luncheon, contact Chris Swinburne on 0414 459 967 or visit the St John’s Old Collegians Football Club Facebook page.
Gubatanga Diamond is on the Eagles’ grid By JARROD POTTER THE Victorian Eagles Women’s Gridiron team is set to shine with Berwick Diamonds running-back Larnie Gubatanga selected for the maiden squad. Gubatanga, 23, from Narre Warren North, was shocked to read her name on the Eagles’ recently released squad list as she only went to the try-outs to improve her game and keep up her skills with the season just completed. “I wasn’t really expecting it,” Gubatanga said. “I personally went there just to train in game experience and learn from a few of the coaches and pick up skills and techniques as my season has just ended. “It was like extra-training so I wasn’t really going there to gain a spot on the squad, but I did. “I feel privileged to be playing with the most talented players across Victoria.” Gubatanga has been a pivotal part of the Endeavour Hills-based Berwick Diamonds women’s gridiron side for the past three seasons since the team started in 2014. It all began with a local news article as Gubatanga got her sister Erin and friends to get along and try out the area’s latest sport. “There was an article in the local newspaper saying the Berwick Miners have officially started a women’s team and seeing if anyone was interested in joining, so I asked my sister and a few of my friends if they were keen on giving it a go,” Gubatanga said.
Larnie Gubatanga has been picked for the Victorian women’s state gridiron team for a one-off match against ACT. 145457 “So we went down to the first training and my sister and I have been part of it ever since.” With her selection in last year’s Fire and Ice representative clash, Gubatanga was well in the mix for this year’s state team. But the individual accolades aren’t as important as team-work and making mates across the state with gridiron shaping her life in the best possible way throughout her short time in the sport. “I think it’s a totally different sport and
it’s one thing that pushes me to do better,” Gubatanga said. “In the past I’ve just played tennis and in this sport it motivates me to want to do better as it’s a team effort. “Everyone relies on each other and everyone needs each other, so you’ve got to do your part for the rest of the play to work. “But the whole journey itself has been a massive highlight, creating new friendships across the state with other teams and just being able to play, socialise and have fun.”
The united Victorian side won’t let the ACT Monarchs take the inaugural state clash without a fight, as Gubatanga believes the Eagles are strong enough to run over the hosts on Saturday 21 May in Canberra. “We have a really strong squad - I’m happy with who has been selected and the coaching staff is great,” Gubatanga said. “We all have the same goal, so it’s much easier when everyone is working towards the same goal - we want to win the first state match.”
Blicavs’ season sign up DANDENONG Rangers have retained their first major piece of the 2016/17 WNBL season with Sara Blicavs re-committing to the side. She was arguably one of its most important players throughout the 2015/16 WNBL season and Dandenong confirmed last week that it had locked down Blicavs, 23, to a one-season deal. Averaging 13.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, the versatile swingman played a major role in Dandenong’s push to the WNBL finals, which was cut short by the SEQ Stars. Blicavs is with the Australian Opals at the moment as she tries to secure a spot on the 12-woman roster for the Rio Olympic Games. The Opals are currently on tour in Japan, playing a three-game warm-up tour against the hosts in Nagaoka on 7 May and then two games in Tokyo on 9-10 May.

St John’s just zipping along By JARROD POTTER GREATER DANDENONG FOOTBALL REVIEW - ROUND 4 IN THE first significant skirmish for the VAFA Division 2 crown, St John’s brushed aside premiership threat Preston in a 32-point demolition. Taking to Carroll Reserve for the first time in 2016, St John’s made sure it was a happy homecoming as the goals started piling up. With a healthy wind at their backs, the JOCs punished the Bullants early, rocketing away to a five-goal lead at the first change. Aaron Thornton (eight goals) was the main beneficiary of the relentless St John’s clearance work. The JOCs full forward continued his VAFA rampage to take the lead in the league’s goal kicking with 20 already off only four outings. Around the five-goal mark was where the margin would stay all day as St John’s had answers for every question Preston could conjure. Backmen Dylan Webb and Liam O’Connor held down the visitors through the main moments of the match, while the run-and-carry off the smalls also impressed. Bahaa Koweiss, Daniel Abou-Karroum, Matthew Nicholson and Gary Roberts flew the flag and then some. Things got heated through the third term - as harsh words and a few jumper punches from both sides were exchanged - but it was a minor distraction on the road to St John’s third win. Four goals against the wind sealed the deal and the win gives St John’s the outright lead in VAFA Division 2 as the only undefeated side in the competition heading into round five. “It’s good because you want to make a statement early on in the year,” St John’s assistant coach Anthony Brannan said. “They’re probably the benchmark in our competition and to knock them off at home is a really good result. “We don’t like to lose at home and it’s a good start for us here from our first home game.” Brannan thought the defensive end help up under great pressure from the Bullants, the young midfielders continued to improve while Thornton’s pedigree speaks for itself. “The midfield – we’ve got the young boys in there this year, Glenn Costas is our captain, Corey Ladson and Corey Ely – they’re 23 now so they need to start standing up,” Brannan said.
St John’s ruckmen Daniel Cattolico and Guy Chuol fly against Preston Bullants’ George Warton. 153607 “Nick Terrill has come to the club and been really committed as well.” They’ll set their sights on Emmaus St Leos away this weekend with the winning streak well in mind for the JOCs. “They’ve got a couple of good players and were undefeated until the grand final, so we think they’re a good side,” Brannan said. “Saw them first hand in a praccy match last year and they’re very slick. “It will be another big game for us and we’re three-and-zip now so it will be four-and-zip next week.” Keysborough returned to the winning side of SFL Division 2 life in a 14.7 (91) to 11.9 (75) win over Heatherton. Will Gayfer (four goals) traded his usual de-
fensive post in for a forward run to great effect while Danny Morland, Jake Dunn and Shaun Dekkers also featured in the best. Hallam remains undefeated with its fourth win on the trot - knocking over South Yarra in a 13.6 (84) to 7.11 (53) victory. Shane Thomas (four goals) snagged a little bag while the side continued to be well served in the midfield by Jayden Bubb (two goals), Manny Peresso (two goals) and Matt Neve. Lyndale - led by Trevor Kumetaitis (five goals) - was too much for Endeavour Hills in a 16.11 (107) to 12.14 (86) victory. Daniel Wilson and Alex Kerr were sublime for the Pumas. For Endeavour Hills, Shaun Richards (two goals), Monash Berwick jelly-wrestling champion Daniel Morrison (three goals) and

Shane Peake (three goals) featured in the Falcons’ best. Doveton Eagles were beaten by the best, downed by 60 points against ladder leading Mount Waverley. Jarrod O’Neill, Kaine Bundy and Darren Ramsdale (four goals) were the Eagles’ finest. Sandown was no match for Moorabbin, bested 7.6 (48) to 14.16 (100), nor was Dandenong against Ashwood, in a 4.8 (32) to 21.17 (143) blowout. In EFL results, Noble Park was overrun by Montrose in the final term, downed 8.10 (58) to 10.16 (76). The side couldn’t muster any multiple goal-kickers while Sam Monaghan led from the front alongside Tim Harper, Ziggie Alwan and Craig Anderson.
Dandy’s on top across a great City By JARROD POTTER NPL VICTORIA 2 EAST - ROUND 10 DANDENONG City, Springvale White Eagles and Dandenong Thunder put the ‘great’ in Greater Dandenong this weekend with a NPL Victoria clean sweep against their Western adversaries. Returning to the winners’ list after last week’s one goal loss to White Eagles, Dandenong City made its presence felt 4-1 against Sunshine George Cross. Too much space was afforded to the likes of Gonzalo Freddi and Shaun Filipovic (8’) at the front. This was especially true for the latter who was brought in by David Morovic within the first 10 minutes to easily boot the first. Opportunities went begging for City and it only got worse on the half-time whistle as Sunshine George Cross levelled the ledger. The second half would not be as close though. City put the visitors to bed early as Anthony Cassar (68’ and 75’) added a quick-fire double before Chris Antoniadis (78’) thumped home the fourth and final goal. Dandenong City observed a minute’s silence and wore black armbands in honour of former player Marko Varvodic, who passed away recently. The storm-front over Melbourne started with a 4-0 Thunder strike as Huss Skenderovic’s men thrashed Moreland City. It took a while for the Thunder to get going, but the floodgates opened via Brandon Barnes (31’, 60’, 80’), who cashed a hat-trick for his stellar efforts. Veton Korcari (84’) made it four approaching the final whistle as Thunder

Dandenong City’s David Morovic created headaches for the Sunshine Picture: JARROD POTTER George Cross midfield all day. 153606 went to 10-0-0 with a whopping plus-24 goal difference. Thunder striker Amir Osmancevic also returned from injury, for half-anhour’s action late in the clash, in another huge positive for the attack at George Andrews Reserve. White Eagles had to do it the hard way in a 3-2 win against the West’s top ranked side - Moreland Zebras - on Friday night. In the end, second half stamina won the day as the visitors surged to victory. Jason Ricciuti (54’) started things off soon after the resumption, before John Pykett (62’) and Damir Stoilovic
(81’) finished the job. In the state leagues, South Springvale got on the winner’s list with a 3-2 victory over Langwarrin - via Konstantinos Daskalakis and a Nikolaos Galas brace. Doveton SC took a 1-0 win over Peninsula, while Springvale City pumped Hampton Park United 6-0 - led by Stuart Nicholson’s brace. Dandenong South lost 2-5 to Skye United, Endeavour Hills Fire snuffed out Lyndale United 3-0. Noble Park went 4-2 up over East Brighton United while Endeavour United took a 3-2 win over Keysborough SC.
BIG V - ROUND 6 AFTER hard-fought battles in Division 2 over the years, promotion this season ensured the Keysborough Cougars got a chance to square off against the old rivals Casey Cavaliers once again. But it was not the night the Cougars’ hoped for, as they were punished 84-52 by the impressive Cavaliers’ outfit. Aaron Abram (20 points) was the best of the Cougars while Ben Morwood (10 points, nine rebounds) and David Smith (10 points, seven rebounds) worked hard at both ends of the court. The Cougars’ ladies had it equally tough - downed by flag favourites Blackburn 49-75. Katie O’Neill (19 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals) had a phenomenal outing, as did Amy Leslie (15 points, six steals) and hard-rebounding Tamara Matecic (six points, 16 rebounds). In SEABL results, the Rangers
just held onto home-court superiority as both sides dispatched Geelong Supercats. The women had to go to overtime to take an 84-76 win and see off a few familiar faces. Dandenong ex-pats Alex Bunton and Rosie Fadljevic were tough asks for the current Rangers’ crew, but the Rangers came from behind to force it further. Amelia Todhunter (13 points, five rebounds) made her return to the Rangers’ uniform and excelled alongside long-time sparring partners Clare Papavs (27 points, seven rebounds), Aimie Clydesdale (18 points) and the walking doubledouble Lauren Scherf (12 points, 17 rebounds). The men’s team had a nail-biter, winning 87-85 as the usual suspects Lucas Walker (22 points, nine rebounds), Andrew Harms (22 points) and Daequon Montreal (20 points, eight rebounds) excelled.

Relieved with Rat in ranks By JARROD POTTER
Sam Fowler has been on fire to start his TAC Cup career - booting 16 goals in four games. 153311
“I wasn’t really too sure what to expect with the games or even if I was going to get a game,” Fowler said. “Wasn’t sure what was going to happen - it’s all happened very quickly and I’ve started off really well and just enjoying it.” His goal-sense isn’t saved only for the Stingrays only, as Fowler featured in the Vic Country practice game against Queensland and is well in the mix for selection in the under-18 national championships squad. “I played in that game, think I got three goals in the end and the coaches were pretty happy with
me,” Fowler said. “I’m not too sure, I’m in the mix and need to play well and see what happens. “I think it would be a bit of a weird feeling but at the same time it would be awesome, not sure what to expect yet, but if I get in I’ll be pretty rapt.” He sneaks under the radar so much that Dandenong Stingrays coach Craig Black misplaced a couple of his hard-earned goals, but the coach believes Fowler’s dogged attack is the impressive factor of his game.
Dandenong is the flavour of the week By JARROD POTTER THERE is a distinctly Dandenong flavour to this week’s Youth Girls National Championships. Getting a chance to run around the home town grounds in the Big V, the championships run this week from Monday 2 May to Friday 6 May at grounds including Collingwood, Trevor Barker Oval Sandringham, Coburg and finally Punt Road Oval for some of the grand finals on Friday. For Vic Metro and Vic Country, however, Friday could mean a whole lot more as the Pool A grand final is a curtain-raiser for the Richmond versus Hawthorn Friday night AFL clash at the MCG. From the Dandenong Stingrays Youth Girls Academy, captain Georgia Walker (Vic Country), Lynd-
Dandenong Stingrays coach Scott Gowans and captain Georgia Walker will lead Vic Country in the same roles at this week's Youth Girls championships. 152148 hurst’s Emily Browning and Cranbourne’s Courtney Jones and Kayla Ripari among others who will get to run out in front of a home crowd this year.
Walker, 18, from Rye, has also been named Vic Country’s captain for the upcoming championships, held this year in Melbourne. The Stingrays’ grand final win-
ning captain and best-on-ground medallist in the side’s 4.8 (32) to 1.1 (7) victory over Sandringham in the Youth Girls Academy Challenge premiership, will team up with Stingrays coach Scott Gowans to battle a lot of her Stingrays’ team mates, especially on Thursday as Vic Country takes on Vic Metro at Sandringham. In a cruel twist, Eagles’ midfielder Georgia Gourlay has been ruled out of her second Youth Girls championships after re-rupturing her ACL - the second year in a row she’s suffered the same knee injury. Beaconsfield trio Georgia Gee, Tyla Hanks and Brooke Struylaart will also take pride of place in the Vic Metro ranks while Charis Ulu Peniata will fly the flag for the Keysborough-based Parkmore Pirates.
“I actually thought he kicked three, and I said to him that was a good three goals but everyone told me he kicked five,” Black said. “He’s just dangerous to play on and the good thing about him is he doesn’t just sit in the goalsquare, he gets up and takes his share pushing through the middle and he tackles and defends and at the moment he’s lucky enough to be on the rewarding end for goals.” Fowler and the Stingrays face the Western Jets on Sunday afternoon.

NO-ONE is happier to hear about rats at their venue at the moment than the Dandenong Stingrays. When the crowd roars “Rat”, it can only mean the Stingrays’ 169cm small forward - and cult hero in the making - Sam Fowler has booted another bag of goals. “Just had it (nickname) my whole life really,” Fowler said. “Not sure how I’ve got it but I’ve always been Rat.” Fowler, 17, has been in superb form throughout the first month of the TAC Cup, as he’s kicked 16 goals from his four matches to only sit second behind Geelong’s Brett Blair (17 goals) in the league goal-kicking. Racking up his first five-goal haul on Saturday, Fowler’s contributions proved pivotal in Dandenong’s come-from-behind win over NSW/ ACT and he was named Dandenong’s Anzac medallist for that performance. “It was good to get the medal I suppose in the end - my second half I was pretty happy with the game and just rapt to be out there with the boys and it’s been awesome so far,” Fowler said. “I suppose I’ve started off pretty well - I had a good pre-season and just worked hard on the track and got a few goals to start it off. “Obviously beating a state side with the Stingrays on the weekend - that was an awesome win and probably be up there, up there with the round one win against Gippsland as well.” The Dromana goal-sneak didn’t make the Stingrays squad last year, but with 16 senior Nepean Football League appearances for Dromana in 2015 - showing his prodigious goal-sense with 36 goals - it was enough to earn him a shot this time around. While there were nerves at first, it’s been a rather seamless transition from the local ranks to the elite junior pathway and Fowler just wants to take in every second of it.
