tance of research, at every stop. We invited local communities to get involved and to talk about their own experiences, too. We hoped to play a role in promoting early detection by talking to people about our own experiences,” said Christine Robins. She said that they believed they were able to get the word out about early detection and enjoyed that part of the trip. But it sounds like the whole trip proved to be a lot of fun - hard work - but a lot of fun. And the highlights? “The people we met,” Christine said. “We are keeping in touch with them and hopefully some will come and visit. “The most disappointing thing was the rubbish on the side of the road.”

THERE were tears of joy as conquering heroes Christine and Ian Robins returned to Stanthorpe on Monday with thousands of kilometres under their belts and up to $40,000 in the bank for cancer research. The pair left home last year to trek around Australia - Christine, 64, on the road and Ian, 65 on Monday, in the support car. And now minus a few toenails and after suffering a stroke six weeks ago, Christine is taking a bit of time to put her feet up - kind of. “We are going to keep raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) and the Prostrate Cancer Foundation of Australia,” Christine said. “We’ve formed a new group Purple Dove Awareness Group on Facebook. and we have market coming up this weekend at the Heart Of the Summit Markets on Sunday. “I’m also going to do a bit of work with the homeless too.” But first they have a few health problems to work through. Christine said she felt some weakness in one side of her face and problems with her eye a few weeks ago and sought medical help, only to be told by her doctor she’d had a stroke. “I’m on my way up to the eye specialist in Toowoomba,” she said. “Just getting old, I suppose.” Ian will undergo tests next week after his PSA levels increased recently. In fact, it was Ian’s original diagnosis with prostate cancer that triggered this walk. In true support, his wife Christine (64) chose to join him on the mammoth challenge to raise funds for prostate and breast cancer research. “We wanted to raise awareness of breast and prostate cancer, and the impor-

THE annual Opera in the Vineyard, this year headlined by Australian opera great David Hobson, has been praised for its success. Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg commended the Stanthorpe Rotary Club, Ballandean Estate and the Puglisi Family on another hugely successful and outstanding Opera in the Vineyard last weekend. “Through the vision of friends and neighbours, Angelo Puglisi and the late David Pugh, Opera in the Vineyard has become an outstanding annual event and is a magnificent credit to all involved. “The opera is one of south-east Queensland and the Granite Belt’s premier cultural events on the social calendar, Mr Springborg said. “Since its inception 20 years ago, the organisers of the opera have donated approximately $1m to charity. “The Wesley Hospital Rotary Lodge, Brisbane, and many local groups have been the recipients of funds from the Opera in the Vineyard event. “I commend the Stanthorpe Rotary Club, the Puglisi Family and Ballandean Estate for their devotion and dedication to this event. “Bringing a large number of visitors to the Stanthorpe district for an unforgettable weekend of fine music and excellent country hospitality, the event demonstrates the wonderful example of the passion and commitment of the Granite Belt residents and businesses to work together for a purpose, Mr Springborg said.
SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has confirmed its commitment to preserve the high priority water supply at Leslie Dam for the residents, businesses and industry of Warwick. quantity of water from Leslie Dam to meet the needs of irrigators downstream. The proposed release would come from the council’s high priority water supply allocation. Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Tracy Dobie said that the council considered the request at the meeting on Tuesday 3 May.

“The council discussed the request at length, and agreed not to support or endorse the release of the high priority water for irrigation purposes, she said. “While the council certainly has sympathy for the growers seeking to utilise the water to finish off their crops, at this stage, urban and industrial uses need to be viewed as the priority.
“The first responsibility of the council is to ensure that there is an adequate supply of water for the current and future residents and businesses of Warwick, and it is important to manage water resources in a very conservative manner, particularly in light of concerns with the existing water levels in Leslie Dam.

Nuclear site dumped sential and overdue national storage and disposal facility for low to medium level radioactive waste," Mr Springborg said. "In relation to the consideration of Omanama as a possible site, Minister Frydenberg constantly reassured me that broad community support was the most critical element before any decision could be made to locate a facility in the area. I therefore had complete confidence in relaying that commitment to my local community. "While there was significant support within sections of the local
community for the facility, it clearly did not meet the critical requirement of broad community acceptance," he said. "I know there will be many local people either disappointed or happy with this decision. Regardless of peoples’ personal views, it is important that those different local opinions be respected in response to this announcement." A remote station near Hawker in South Australia was earmarked by the Commonealth as the preferred site last Thursday.

Big spending budget still delivers savings SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council's draft budget is set to go on display, with the council to hold information sessions across the region. The draft was been presented to the new council as part of the induction process, and it is now set to go on exhibition for 28 days to seek feedback from the community. Mayor Tracy Dobie said placing the budget on exhibition, holding in-
formation sessions, and requesting feedback from residents before the budget is adopted is a great way for the community to take ownership of the budget. The draft budget is consistent with the Long Term Financial Forecast and leaves rates at four per cent. It also recognises the ongoing shortfalls in funding from the Federal and State governments, as well as the need for
the council to maintain the renewal of infrastructure and the continued delivery of quality services to urban and rural communities across the region. About $23.4 million has been included for the capital works program which features several major projects to be undertaken across the region. The council invites all residents to attend information sessions on the draft budget.
The sessions are to be held on the following dates: Warwick Town Hall, Palmerin Street, Tuesday 3 May at 6pm; Allora Community Hall, 55 Herbert Street, Thursday 12 May at 6pm; Council Chambers, Stanthorpe Administration Building, Marsh Street, Tuesday 17 May at 6pm; Cedar Room, Killarney Memorial Aged Care, 6 Cedar Street, Thursday 19 May at 6pm.
Network musters fast internet speeds as NBN rolls into region RESIDENTS in regional and rural areas in the Maranoa electorate, which includes the Southern Downs, can begin to connect to affordable, highspeed broadband with the launch of services on NBN’s Sky Muster satellite network. Federal candidate for Maranoa David Littleproud welcomed the official launch of NBN’s commercial Sky Muster broadband service this week.
“This is great news for people in Maranoa that will finally be able to access high speed internet,” Mr Littleproud said. Offering download speeds of up to 25 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of up to five Mbps, the Sky Muster service will provide faster internet for people living in regional and remote areas. “The Australian Government has
invested $2 billion in two advanced Ka-band satellites and a network of ground stations that make up the Sky Muster service,” Mr Littleproud said. “Many homes and businesses in Maranoa are still dependent on very basic internet access which makes even online banking or emailing difficult. Sky Muster will change all that for many thousands of Australians. “This is an exciting announce-
ment for the people of Maranoa. With more than 25,000 businesses and homes eligible for Sky Muster satellite, Maranoa is the largest recipient of this roll out in the country.” A variety of different broadband plans are available from providers and pricing compares favourably with current international and local commercial satellite and mobile internet plans.

STATE Opposition Leader and Southern Downs MP Laurence Springborg on Friday welcomed the Federal Government's decision not to build a nuclear waste facility in the region, at Omanama. Mr Springborg said the government had listened to local concerns and noted there was not broad enough support for the facility to be built at the short-listed site. "I thank the Federal LNP Government for adhering to their promise of proper consultation and respect for community attitudes in identifying the final site for the es-

Night of nights for the seniors ON Friday night, 29 April about 130 Warwick State High School seniors attended their Year 12 “Fire and Ice” formal. The formal committee led by committee chair Maddie Nero and mentor teacher Lydia Strahley had worked tirelessly on the planning for this event. The night was awash with floor-length gowns, featuring lace and diamantes in all the colours of the rainbow. Many of the male students opted for classic black suits, however the beau of the ball, Riley, wore a dashing blue suit. Hundreds of people gathered at the school to watch this year’s red carpet arrivals. Spectacular cars were on display as they conveyed the students to their formal. Fam-

Southern Downs Regional Council’s engineering director Peter See said the council’s engineering department commissioned a report by Instrada seeking solutions to the problems with the existing culverts with the objective to remove load limits. “Instrada’s report recommended that the existing culverts be repaired at a cost of about $45,000, and this action would extend the life of the culverts by up to 15 years, subject to regular inspection,” he said. “The council will progress repairs to the existing culverts, but more immediately, will prepare an alternative route for heavy vehicles around the culverts on Allora-Clifton Road. “This will come at a cost of about $15,000, and the combined cost of works will be funded from the existing roads maintenance budget. “While these works are un-

Mayor Tracy Dobie said the outcome was a good compromise to minimise the impacts on the heavy vehicle users of Allora-Clifton Road, but pointed out this was a separate matter to the B-double application and the issue of the Allora Drive and Allora Clifton Road intersection.

A WAY forward has been mapped out for heavy vehicles using the Allora-Clifton Road while the road undergoes repairs. At the first full general meeting of the new-look Southern Downs Council yesterday the councillors discussed a temporary detour route around the existing culverts, while the road is under repair during the next few months. Councillors adopted four recommendations aimed at addressing concerns over the poor condition of culverts on AlloraClifton Road, and potential impacts on transport companies and some farmers if load limits were applied to the existing culverts. The condition of the culverts was identified following investigations brought about by a B-double application submitted last year, and subsequently rejected because of concerns over the culverts. Following a review of that decision, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator rejected the application, due to the inadequacy of the Allora Drive culverts. Further inspections were instigated by the council through the Department of Transport and Main Roads and specialised structural engineers, Instrada, resulting in a recommendation that load limits be applied to the existing culverts on Allora-Clifton Road, sparking concerns about the flow-on impacts to transport companies and local farmers. At its general meeting on 16 March, the council resolved to

Promises, promises TO the Mayor - well, well, well. Your promises are like water off a duck's back. You said one of your first things to do was to make sure the rates stayed down, but I see the ratepayer suffering again. So it looks like to me two per cent rate rise and two per cent increase to councillors who have only just sat down to polish their seats. So would you please take time and sit down with the CEO who seems to be running the show? When I voted, I voted for councillors, not the CEO as his name was not on the ballot paper, but I hear on the grapevine he has taken over what the councillors should be deciding on. So a suggestion for the councillors who told voters they are passionate about the Southern Downs, donate your wage increase towards lowering the debt. Also if you have decided to scrap the mardi gras and street parade you better look at scrapping the Sprints at Leyburn, as I believe the council handout is quite large to the Sprints. Can you tell the ratepayers how much money is handed out to the Leyburn Sprints? I have been told council hands out a healthy donation to a non-profit organisation! W. Long, Karara.
A GREAT Anzac Day at Stanthorpe. But what a contrast between thankful patriots lining the march and those who have seemingly sold our security to save their own jobs. On top of the billions he has blown since betraying Mr Abbott, Mr Turnbull now boasts the $50 billion submarine purchase from France is about the jobs for 2500 workers in South Australia. At $18 million per worker, that is pretty good Centrelink support! Adelaide was already favoured by Turnbull’s pledge to build patrol boats there in 2018. How much more of our children’s future will he mortgage to buy a handful of SA votes? The French will pay just $2.58 billion each for their subs.

Why must ours cost over $4 billion each? Thanks to Green hysteria, we will reject French nuclear powered subs for ones run on diesel. How clever! Worse, it will take years to develop the necessary construction facilities in SA. Meanwhile French shipyards in Cherbourg could have built and delivered some subs to us, thus cutting the huge gap between our current subs falling apart and new ones going into service. Turnbull’s beleaguered SA MPs Pyne, Flint and Williams were unsure of election in July. Is that really why a Japanese bid was rejected, much to the delight of expansionist communist China, and the Adelaide shipbuilding bonanza announced? "Do not put your trust in princes, nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help." Psalm 146:3. Geoff Pickering, Rosenthal Heights.

Wheels back through time ALL the colour and fun of autumn hit Allora with a vengence over the weekend as the clock was turned back for the Alora Autumn Festival. With pop-up markets and artisans displaying and selling their wares and displays of penny-farthing bikes, veteran and vintage cars there was something for everyone. Terry West took a stroll through Allora’s historic streets with his camera in hand.
All sorts of old machines could be seen around Allora at the Autumn Festival.

Mums moved by gestures THERE is a special place in a mother’s heart for the trinkets and acts of affection that are bestowed proudly by small children on Mother’s Day. From pretty soap to a coffee mug brimming with chocolates, reportedly some not making it all the way home to Mum, to a pet rock adorned with a green sequined frog bearing the word ‘hope’. These are just some of the gifts that local school children purchase for Mum, Nanna or Grandma at West School’s Mother’s Day stall. At the helm of the Mother’s Day stall operation is Jacinta Lyons, a mum of four, who has guided West students in selecting their priceless purchases for over seven years. Mum to Christie, Year six, Steph, Year 4, and high-schoolers Ben and Mitch, Jacinta is perfectly attuned to her little shoppers and their spending habits. “Our stall is a mix of bought goods, crafted goods and parent donations, but the thinking has always been that gifts need to be especially from a kid’s point of view,” she said. “Children can purchase items from 50 cents to five dollars generally, with
a few more expensive items available for those with a bigger allowance.” The school is fortunate to have a troop of volunteers who thoroughly enjoy pricing up the hundreds of items, setting up the pop-up shop the day before, and being on hand on the Thursday and Friday before Mother’s Day to help children select gifts and ensure savvy shopping. P&C president Kerri Walters praised Jacinta and her helpers for making little people feel accomplished in selecting and presenting a special gift for their mums or grans. “They do an amazing job each year. Everything just happens and while the Mother’s Day stall is a team effort, every team needs a captain and Jacinta fills that role beautifully.” Children and teachers will browse and shop on Thursday and Friday in the multi-purpose room beside the tuckshop, before school and at specific class-allotted times. And dads too get special treatment from the school in September.
Stall helpers Tammy Mullaly and Robyn Yarwood prepare for the Mother’s Day shopping frenzy at the school on Thursday and Friday.

DID YOU KNOW
VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.
If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.
On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.
Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.
If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
This federal election your vote will help shape Australia.

What’s On MEMBERS of the Warwick Artists Group have been working towards their latest exhibition at Warwick Art Gallery for many months. With the inspirational theme, My Passion, the artists were encouraged to consider the things, places, animals or people that propel their imagination. Thirty-three artists have work in the exhibition that was also a group-funded competition judged in five categories by well- respected artist and educator Sandy Pottinger who enjoyed the challenge of selecting the winners. “In some cases, I thought I had a clear winner, and then another work showed me that I needed to look further,” Sandy said. “In selecting the winning entries, I have considered the subject, its interpretation, the composition, the media used and how it has been handled. I have also looked for a sense of originality. I have been particularly taken with works that carry some depth of meaning rather than the merely decorative pieces." Award winners: 1. By TANIA PHILLIPS Captain America: Civil War (MA15+) Starring: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Daniel Bruhl SUPERHERO movies are all about saving the world and making things better, right? But what about the consequences? What about the human cost and collateral damage of “saving the world” from the bad guys how much does and should that come into play? This has been a question asked in modern superhero movies including Xmen and The Incredibles in recent years and it’s the underlying thread of Civil War (though not the only one). In this case the events of the Avengers Age of Ultron have left an imprint on the world, the collective governments (120 of them) of the Earth pass an Act designed to regulate all superhuman activity and bring it under the eye of a UN committee. This polarises opinion among the Avengers, creating two factions - one to side with Iron Man and the UN and the other Captain America and self-determination. Of course this all leads to an epic battle between former allies (which takes up a lot of screen time). Once again directed by the
managed to be one or the other. Chadwick Boseman, who manages to stand out in what is a huge ensemble cast, was impressive as the Black Panther, the leader of a mythical African country (slowly introduced into the film universe over previous Marvel movies) who turns hero. While Spiderman is played a little for laughs, it’s Boseman who adds much of the heart to this movie along with pseudo villain Daniel Bruhl, who continues to add great performances to his IMDb list. Of course once again, women are under-represented but this has more to do with the original source material. You get the feeling Marvel is at least trying hard to redress the balance with Scarlett Johanssen’s Black Widow having some of the best fight sequences of the movie (though did we really need them sped up?) and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch once again standing out and bringing great emotion to the character and film. All in all Civil War is a glimpse into the future of Marvel and suffers a little for that and for having so many actors and characters and so much happening. And remember this is Marvel, so stay until the end for the two additional scenes!
Russo brothers, who managed to turn the Captain America Winter Soldier into a pretty credible political thriller, Civil War seems more of a showcase for the talents of all of the superheroes, a teaser for future adventures then a fully cohesive story. Though it’s much more interesting than Ultron. Its heart is the story of a group divided, of mate against mate, of secrets and lies and it succeeds in this. It’s well-paced and with enough humour to keep it flowing well and make it fun to watch. The battle scenes are epic and yet still for the most part a bit of fun (though the main one when all of the avengers go head-to-head may be a tad overdone and leave you wishing you’d bought extra popcorn). The final climactic fight scene seems just a touch forced - though it manages to stop just this side of falling over into the realm of silliness. Having said that, this was still great entertainment with some very impressive performances - particularly by the newcomers to the Marvel Universe - Chadwick Boseman and Tom Hollands. In Hollands, it looks like we finally have an actor who is both a credible and believable Peter Parker and his alter-ego Spiderman after two actors who

Wheels on the bus Casey’s tips
THE wheels on the bus have been turning for 50 years for Haidley’s Panoramic Coaches that was established as a Warwick coach and bus company back in 1966. As the owner of numerous Queensland Transport School runs and Warwick's only licensed city bus service, Haidley’s coaches have transported thousands of students daily to and from various schools and passengers to all parts of Australia. On 10 May 1966, Don and Heather Haidley bought their first school run, ‘Silverwood/Connolly Dam’ P416, which runs south of Warwick and a 9-seater VW Micro bus. As time went on, they decided to run small day tours around the Darling Downs, and over the next few years more tours were run further afield and larger vehicles were purchased and the name Panoramic Coaches became a reality. Later, tour coaches were purchased and many groups of New Zealand passengers were arriving to travel to the Great Barrier Reef and other parts of Australia with long hours of driving by Don and Roy McKendrick. Their son, Cameron joined the business as an apprentice mechanic in 1975, aged 15, and has worked for 41 years as an “A” grade motor mechanic, tour driver and is the manager of Haidley’s Panoramic Coaches. In 1989, the partnership of Don and Heather dissolved. Don continued to purchase more school runs and charter coaches and today, the third generation has come on board. Cameron and his wife Lyndal’s boys, Hayden and Mitchell now have their coach licenses. On Saturday 7 May, there will be free tours to drive on the original Connolly Dam school run as well as a short drive in a historic bus around the CBD of Warwick. “It is a celebration to have been in business for 50 years, but also it is a time to reflect on the wonderful staff that has worked for the business, our passengers that have supported us and travelled on our vehicles and our suppliers for their great service," Don said. If there are any photographs that people have from tours they have been on with Haidley’s, bring them down as a collation of photographs is being undertaken to have a full history of all the buses.
Don and Cameron Haidley.

Memories in white, ribbon and the lace URBENVILLE Multipurpose Service was transformed by ribbon and lace recently when residents, the residents’ families and staff held a wedding dress display. Urbenville executive officer/ director of nursing Nancy Martin said the idea for the wedding dress display arose from a number of residents reminiscing about their own wedding days. “The discussion progressed to the idea of a wedding dress display and it was wonderful to see such support from the com-
munity, and the residents at the Urbenville Health Service,” Ms Martin said. “The day included a display of wedding photos, a display of gowns and a parade of wedding dresses modelled by local school students. “I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all those in the community who loaned dresses, photos, and items to be displayed. It was wonderful to look back in time right through to current day.” Ms Martin thanked activi-
ties officer Kathy Goldthorpe for her tireless effort in organising the day, Ann Varley for compering, Jolene Ward from Enchanted Florist for the flowers, the management and staff at the hospital, all the community members who helped on the day, and the staff from Woodenbong Central School, who made the day run smoothly. “The residents had a lovely day and very much enjoyed seeing their dresses back in the limelight,” Ms Martin said.
Grace Skinner, a resident of Urbenville MPS, with Woodenbong Central School student Brooke Byrnes modelling Grace’s wedding dress, pearls and bouquet, along with Grace's flower girl Ailsa Backler.

Eels reel under scandal The
spin With Casey O’Connor email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
IT HAS been an awful week for rugby league. The Parramatta fiasco stole the headlines for all the wrong reasons and across the ditch yet another scandal involving senior NRL players and drugs. Welcome to a day in Todd Greenberg’s life. After revelations of the indiscretions of several of the Kiwi Internationals, Greenberg announced on Tuesday the proposed sanctions against the Parramatta Eels. While everyone knew something was coming, the alleged level of duplicity by the Eels hierarchy was jaw dropping. Eels fans were left shocked and angry and talk back radio has been inundated with fans expressing their outright anger. That Parramatta allegedly have been in breach of the salary cap by over $3 million in the past four years, and around $570,000 over the cap this season are allegations staggering in their enormity. And begs the question after the penalties imposed on the Dogs, Warriors and Melbourne Storm in the last decade, “What were they thinking?” In an environment where winning a premiership is paramount and every success is judged on that basis, there will always be the temptation to push the boundaries. Seems like Parra did not just push the boundaries they bulldozed them. It seems almost ludicrous to equate the magnitude of this deception with Parra’s abysmal record at the bottom of the NRL pond for so many seasons. Hardly seems like they got value for money. The “who” and the “why” will play out in coming weeks. Perhaps, this pain will eventuate in some good for all - more scrutiny on player managers; perhaps more accountability from players, more overall transparency. The one thing we have seen is that the man at the top of the NRL is decisive, across his brief and is going to take no prisoners. That is the only positive to date. In the meantime, spare a thought for long suffering Eels fans. It is a bitter pill to swallow after finally having a reason to smile about in season 2016. You bet they are going to be unhappy. Spare a thought also for those front office staff who, no doubt, will be left to deal with a swarm of angry Eels while the boys at the top now work on their own legal cases after being granted a court injunction on Tuesday against their deregistration. Not really the feel or look of people with the best interests of the club at heart. Funny that in the scheme of things, it seems they haven’t for a while. - Casey REPRESENTATIVE ROUND THIS weekend Hunter Stadium will host the Trans-Tasman Test Rugby League between the Kiwis and Kangaroos. The Jillaroos and Kiwis Ferns will do battle in the curtain-raiser to the Test at Hunter Stadium. Hopefully, all the other issues swirling around the game will not take away from the importance of the representative round. A Pacific double header featuring Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and PNG will be held at Parramatta’s Pirtek Stadium. Adding to the International flavour of a full weekend of representative rugby league, the Junior Kangaroos will again play the Junior Kiwis in the curtain-raiser. The Trans-Tasman Test is an important match for both teams, in a Four Nations year, and is the Kangaroos first match under new coach Mal Meninga. Meninga has been cautious in his approach to selection with only a couple of new faces in the line-up. Greg Inglis who has been in awful form
Inglewood Roosters Brant O’Dea suffered a hamstring injury in last weekend’s BRL fixture against Wallangarra. for the Bunnies and very obviously carrying an injury or two gets his chance to turn his season around with a big performance in the centres. Two of the “bad Boys” of league on a few season ago, Josh Dugan and Blake Ferguson get their chance in the green and gold since their infamous days at Canberra. Both have been in eye-catching form at club level and have turned not only their football careers but their lives around. It is good to see them rewarded. Many think Cory Oates was stiff to miss selection with Dugan getting the nod, but there is no doubt his time will come. There has not been much hype over the TransTasman Test, but there is no doubt pulling on the green and gold jersey is a great honour for the players and there is sure to be plenty of support from rugby league fans in the Hunter. The Kiwis have had our measure in recent times, but I’m sticking with the experience of the Kangaroos and expect them to give the Kiwis a walloping. BUSY WEEKEND ON THE GREENS ANOTHER long weekend, another busy weekend on the greens and fairways in Stanthorpe. The Friday “Chook Run” saw several players out and about taking the opportunity to hone their skills. Greg Yap began his nine- day golf tour, returning 24 points to win the event and put him in good stead for his vigil. Kay Webb undoubtedly stole the show in the 4BBB medley stableford on Saturday. In the annual event sponsored by Kilcoy visitors Jeff Ihle and Biz Ihle, Webb shot an Eagle on the 13th hole, recording a massive five points. Unfortunately, it was not enough to get Webb and her playing partners into the winners circle. A large contingent of visitors from Kilcoy joined the sponsors and local golfers for a great day of golf. Conditions proved to be perfect for
the winning team of W. Pedersen and J. Pedersen who finished with 49 points and are the first team from Kilcoy to take out the event. Flying the local flag and finishing only one point adrift in second place were Graham Tonkin and Max Hunter. A shaky start at the first hole proving costly. On Sunday, the Central Motors Three Ball Ambrose sponsored by Rob Reeves started on time with a shot gun start and a maximum field. The Kilcoy visitors stuck around for the annual event. Alex Wright, Graham Duncan and Vicki Meloni, teamed up to return a nett score of 56 for their round and take another win back to Kilcoy. The team of O’Brien, Shannon and Favero returned some prestige to the local ranks as they claimed the runner’s-up spot. On such a busy weekend on the Granite Belt calendar, it was pleasing to see so many locals and visitors enjoying a successful weekend of golf played in perfect conditions. Following the success of the weekend, the sponsors have indicated that they will be back next year to sponsor their events which is great news for the Stanthorpe golf club and their members. There were several members who volunteered on the weekend to ensure things ran smoothly and the club would like to extend their thanks to those people. It will be a quieter weekend this week for the May monthly medal and putting competition. It is also the Betty Yap memorial event sponsored by Greg Yap. In Men’s competition it is also the first of four rounds in the club championships in all three divisions, A B and C. The time sheet can be found on the board at the club CLAY EVENT POPULAR TWO Rounds of DTL Clays were held on the Inglewood Range on Sunday and approved popular.
Tom Donald shot consistently in both rounds. In Round One, he outscored Scott Johns and Trevor Lewis and round two was too strong. A pistol competition was also on the cards, and the winner of that was Jason Lewis who outpointed Iain Bowen and Trevor Lewis picked up another minor placing. Jason Lewis outscored Trevor Lewis in the Clays event but in the Pistol competition the results were reversed. This Sunday, members line up for Single Action Sunday and Rimfire. CONSISTENCY WINING FORMULA PETER Williams sponsored the Trophy at the Wallangarra Golf club on Saturday. Kevin Williams played a consistent round to win the event. Jamie Purcell finished in second place just ahead of John Green. For the first time in a while the names Steve Hampstead and Gary Sutcliffe were not in the winners circle. However, both held pin shots at three and nine respectively. Hampstead and Kevin Williams also claimed an approach shot each. This Saturday, players will be competing for the May Monthly Medal and Putting competition. CAMPBELL CARRERA SUCCESS MATT Campbell’s success in last weekend’s Carrera Cup event at Sydney Motorsport Park has put him 30 points clear in the standings and has fellow drivers and enthusiasts taking notice of his talent. Campbell and driving partner George Emery became the first combination with two Pro AM race wins in one event during the Porsche Carrera Cup. Emery was full of praise for his young partner flagging a bright future for him. The next stop in the Carrera Cup is Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway. Motor enthusiasts in the district will be following Campbell progress with great interest.

Local Sport 47th BATTALION CARNIVAL SUCCESS FOR SUNNY COAST ROMA and district hosted the 2016 47th Battalion Trophy carnival last weekend. The annual event sees teams from the NRL Central Division area pitted to play a round robin competition. The South West Country side had a successful carnival, finishing at the top of pool B while Toowoomba went down in the Pool A final to the Sunshine Coast team. Club journeyman Jason Wilmot, playing in the Toowoomba side, earned himself another representative call up when he was named in the Central Division Team at the conclusion of the carnival. The South West Country side posted wins over Central Highlands and a narrow 20-18 win over Gladstone in the four games they played. South West players will now compete in the 2016 Outback Carnival. With a return this weekend to TRL fixtures, the Cowboys have a bye while Wattles play Brothers at Glenholme Park on Sunday. INTERNATIONAL DAY SATURDAY 7 May is International Croquet Day. Although clubs may not have normally scheduled games, clubs everywhere endeavour to play in this particular day. Members of the Stanthorpe club friends and prospective members are invited along on Saturday morning to the courts to take part in some games of Golf Croquet. The scheduled starting time is 9.45am. This is another opportunity for anyone who could not make the recent Come N Try day and would like to have a closer look at the sport. Members and visitors are asked to contact Elaine Brown on 0401 630 272 to play. FUTURE OF CITY COUNTRY CLOUDED THE annual NSWRL City Country game will play out this weekend in Tamworth. While it is great for country districts to host these games, you have to wonder whether the clock is ticking on the concept. Brad Fittler coach of the City side has named 10 debutantes in his side with many NRL club coaches making players unavailable for the clash which has long been nothing more than a spectacle - long gone the pathway to Sate of Origin representation. Terry Matterson takes the reigns for the Country side. Country Origin: Jack Wighton, Kane Linnett, Euan Aitken, Jarrod Croker, Isaah Yeo, James Maloney (capt), Jack Bird, Shannon Boyd, Mitch Rein, Jack De Belin, Tyson Frizell, Boyd Cordner, Dale Finucane, Jordan McLean, Paul Vaughan, Tariq Sims, Mitchell Aubusson. City Origin: Chris Lawrence (capt), Nathan Brown, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Bryce Cartwright, Addin Fonua-Blake, Aaron Gray, Clint Gutherson, Leilani Latu, Kyle Lovett, Josh Mansour, Tyrone Peachey, Nathan Peats, Aidan Sezer, Curtis Sironen, Tom Symonds, Chad Townsend, Jake Trbojevic. Ryan Matterson (18th man). CLOSE GAMES A HIGHLIGHT THERE were some wonderful skills showcased this week during the association croquet games as two of the sports most experienced, Pat Schnoor and Margaret Dickenson went head to head in an extremely close game. Both players had some

Woodenbong archer, Remy Leonard with his mixed team partner Alicia Simpson at the Trans- Tasman Challenge tournament. excellent breaks. In a fine display, Pat had one break of eight, one of five and one of three. Her opponent was also strong on the breaks with a six and a four. Pat Schnoor eventually claimed a very narrow win. In other games, despite scoring eight hoops Jenny Tunbridge was defeated by Carol Verwey. The final score 12-8. Joy Newman’s score of 21 gave her a win over Val Shephard and Grace Howard. REMY LEONARD PUTTING WOODENBONG ON THE MAP WOODENBONG youngster Remy Leonard is one step closer to his dream of qualifying for the Archery World Field Championships in Ireland after a record breaking performance in New Zealand recently, and is putting his hometown of Woodenbong on the map. Leonard travelled to Christchurch as a member of the Australian Archery team to shoot in the Trans-Tasman Challenge. It was a successful competition for the teenager who added more gold and silver medals and records to his growing tally. On the opening day of the international competition, Leonard shot well enough to rank first in the men’s division. He followed that up with a solid performance in the mixed team event where he teamed with Alicia Simpson from NSW. The pair finished with the silver medal. On day two, the individual competitions began. As a result of his ranking, Leonard went straight into the semi-finals and made it to the gold medal round. Despite shooting well earlier
win over Elaine Brown and Shirley Page. Val Fancourt and Judy Locke had a 7-3 win over Justin Liddy and Liz Ellway. Following the break, a longer game was played with Val Fancourt drawing to play two balls. Fancourt outplayed opponents Golding and Page in what was a very close game. The scores 12-11. In the remaining game, Judy Lock and Liz Ellway defeated Elaine Brown and Justin Liddy. Ellway was in top form, scoring eight hoops in this game now lead the Carrera.
NEWCOMERS LEARNING THE ROPES WITH several new players joining the golf croquet group, two first to seven games were played before he break this week to help the newcomers get a feel for the game. Partners were swapped in the second game. The new players are learning quickly, adapting to the game and showing plenty of skills. In the first game, the experienced team of Bill Golding and Elaine proved too strong for Shirley Page and Marion Castle despite a strong showing from that pair. The final score 7-4. Golding top scored with five hoops. Val Fancourt paired with newcomer Justin Liddy to defeat Liz Ellway and Judy Lock 7-1. In this game, Val top scored with five hoops. In the second game, Bill Golding teamed with newcomer Marion Castle and the pair had a 7-4
KILLARNEY POST FIRST WIN THE Killarney Cutters posted their first win in the 2016 season last Saturday when they defeated a vastly improved Stanthorpe/Texas side 44-38 in a close game at Charlie Andrews Oval. The newly formed Stanthorpe Texas side opened the scoring and held a handy 14-6 lead in the first half. Killarney bounced back to score two converted tries and wrestle the lead from the visitors. As the game ebbed and flowed both sides scored, and at half time the visitors held a fourpoint lead. Texas player Ian Thompson put the visitors further in front with two tries in the second half. The Cutters were not to be denied and put on four tries in quick succession to notch up their first win of the season. Cutters captain Dion Galloway was named Man of the Match. Galloway led from the front throughout the game and finished with two tries and 12 points off the boot. In the other BRL game played last weekend, the Inglewood Roosters proved too hot to handle for the home side Wallangarra Rams in a game that finished with a 56-18 win to the visitors. The big win has come at a cost to the Roosters with injuries to several of their key players. Ryan Donovan reinjured his knee and there are doubts about whether he will be back on the paddock again for the Roosters. Other injuries were Brant O’Dea and Luke Willett. After a comprehensive win, the Roosters have a bye this weekend and with a mounting injury tally, the break comes at a good time. In other games this weekend, Stanthorpe/ Texas host Wallangarra at Reg Saunders Oval while the undefeated Tenterfield Tigers host the Cutters.

in the day, he had to battle strong wind conditions in the final and finished with another silver medal. Day three the final day involved shooting over several distances with the highest score possible 1440. The wind conditions again proved troublesome but Leonard grabbed the gold medal. In doing so, he broke the Trans-Tasman 1440 record with a score of 1390. The Australian Team went on to win the Trans-Tasman challenge on total points against their Kiwi cousins. The event is held every two years for young archers under 20.
