‘Cocktail’ killers Cancer tragedy a foundation for support service By LUKE VOOGT
Drugs death alarm By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Geelong has the highest frequency of drug overdose deaths in regional Victoria, a report to the Victorian Coroner’s Court has revealed. Geelong had 111 overdose deaths between 2009 and 2015, the report showed. Ninety-four deaths involved pharmaceuticals, 40 were due to illegal drugs and 32 were from alcohol. The average annual rate of overdose deaths in Geelong was 7.3 per 100,000 of the population per year. The report revealed a concerning rise in heroin overdoses across the state, including in Geelong. The issue raised concerns to the extent that Victoria Police and the Coroner’s Prevention Unit have begun investigating whether increased drug-purity was responsible for the high rate of deaths.
The number of heroin deaths remained steady between 2009 and 2014, ranging from 127 to 137, but jumped to 168 in 2015. Heroin contributed to 943 deaths over the period, with more overdoses than for any other drug except Diazepam. The rise in heroin-related overdose deaths concerned authorities because the drug contributed only a small percentage of drugs offences, especially compared to ice. Dr Matthew Frei, clinical director at drug and alcohol centre Turning Point, said the figures were high for a regional city like Geelong. “There are probably a whole lot of factors working in concert to produce a result like that, Dr Frei said. “The figures could suggest a shift back to heroin use, which peaked in the ’90s when it was cheap and easy to get. Highton’s Rebecca Picone hopes reaching the finals of a national award for mums will help her raise awareness of brain cancer. The 32-year-old single mother is a category finalist in the Brilliant Biz Mum Awards for founding the Peace of Mind Foundation. “I don’t do it for the accolades, she said, “it’s something I’m very passionate about. Brain cancer was one of Australia’s deadliest cancers but received limited government funding, Bec said. “It’s the leading cause of cancer deaths for children and men and women under 40. How can there be a cancer in Australia that kills so many people but gets the lowest levels of funding? The Barwon region had up to 60 new cases of brain cancer a year out of 400 in Victoria, Bec said. Bec and brother Clinton founded the foundation in 2013 after the disease killed his wife. The foundation has given more than $70,000 in grants to 60 Geelong families with brain-cancer victims. Another 100 families have benefitted from its support services. Bec was shocked to discover she was a finalist in the awards’ Best Community Minded Mum category. “I’m still not even sure who put in the nomination for me. Winners will be announced on 14 May. More information about the foundation is available at peaceofmindfoundation.org. au.
FINALIST: Highton’s Bec Picone has been recognised for the foundation she set up with her brother to help families battling brain cancer. (Louisa Jones)

Help is at hand Funeral care is something few people know much about. It can often be a silent concern or an unsure situation in which people can struggle to find the right information. Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Service is trying to educate the community about funeral care. “Tuckers have been serving the community for more than 130 years, so we understand it can be hard to know where to start,” says the service’s Alyson Burchell. “Our community education program helps answer questions people might have while also providing obligation-free information about available options, helping people find the right information when planning ahead. Tuckers conducts free information talks across the region to alleviate concerns and misconceptions about the funeral industry, with a focus on imparting correct information to the wider community of greater Geelong. Available free of charge, the talks cover questions such as: · What information is legally required? · What funeral choices can I make? · What are the costs? · What is the difference between prepaid and prearranged funerals? · What about my jewellery? · Will prepaying affect my pension? “The talks have benefited many different groups including service clubs, community and church groups, aged care facilities and hospital staff, retirement village residents and community health facilities. People are really happy to finally have their questions answered,” Ms Burchell says. Tuckers’ next free information sessions will be at: · 2pm Monday 16 May at Barrabool Hills Centre, 4-46 Province Boulevard, Highton, · 10.30am Tuesday 17 May at Tuckers Chapel, corner Torquay and Pioneer roads, Grovedale, · 7pm Tuesday 17 May at Tuckers Chapel, Grovedale, · 10.30am Wednesday 18 May at Moolap Centre, 410 Bellarine Highway, Moolap, · 10.30am Thursday 19 May at Tuckers Les Cole Chapel, 56 Hope Street, Geelong West, · 2.30pm Thursday 19 May at Tuckers Chapel, 8 Forest Road North, Lara. Decline of crime-fighters a shock for founder Mick By LUKE VOOGT A founder of Neighbourhood Watch in Geelong is “aghast” after discovering its dramatic decline in the city. Newcomb’s Mick Robinson helped introduce the community crime-prevention organisation to Geelong in 1983 but said most of the city’s Neighbourhood Watch branches had since folded. A councillor for 10 years on the former Rural City of Bellarine, he helped establish branches at Newcomb, Whittington and St Albans before watching as numbers swelled to at least 10 across Geelong. Mr Robinson blamed much of the decline on dwindling volunteer numbers. “They’re good people but most of them are elderly,” he said. “They’re doing their best.” Mr Robinson said he discovered the decline when he was guest speaker at the Newcomb branch this week. Volunteers at the meeting also revealed a loss of police support for Neighbourhood Watch, he said. “They were saying they’re not even getting cooperation from the police anymore. Out our way they used to send a police officer out to each of the meetings.” But Mr Robinson, a Justice of the Peace at Geelong Police Station, said criticising officers was “the last thing” he would do. “I witness the marvellous job they do from behind the counter.” Divisional Neighbourhood Watch police coordinator Leading Senior Constable Andrew King said the decline in branches reflected a trend among service clubs everywhere. He said few young people were joining Neighbourhood Watch, leaving elderly members to conduct tasks such as parking audits. “Most of them are in their 70s and 80s and have had to give up because of sheer lack of mobility,” Ldg Sen Const King said. “The ones who are still around are doing some fantastic work.” The Geelong Indy reported in 2009 and 2010 that then-Chief Commissioner Simon Overland had decided to scale back Victoria Police’s involvement in Neighbourhood Watch. But Ldg Sen Const King said the organisation still had adequate backing from the force, with police planning new branches at North Geelong and Portarlington.

In Brief Hotel raid Police have recovered almost $1 million worth of stolen property during a raid on a Geelong hotel room. A man and woman were due to front court on more than 50 charges each related to this week’s discovery of their “mini-crime spree”, police said.
Rescue investigation Authorities are investigating a “kayak incident” that led to the rescue of six secondary students and two teachers off Anglesea on Tuesday. Transport Safety Victoria said it would consider the involvement of kayak hirer Great Ocean Road Adventure Tours and “the planning and approval processes” of Warrnambool’s Brauer College.
Merc stolen An intruder stole a luxury 2015 Mercedes Benz during an aggravated burglary at a Highton home on Monday, according to police. The suspect later used the black C200, registration JOC1, to drive away from a Leopold BP service station without paying for fuel.
‘Smart’ priorities New road and rail infrastructure, duplication of the Geelong - Waurn Ponds railway line and Avalon Airport international terminal are “critical to unlocking Geelong’s future economic potential”, according to City Hall chief Kelvin Spiller. He nominated the projects in response to the Federal Government announcing a $50 million Smart Cities fund for regional infrastructure.
Roadknight change AGHAST: Geelong Neighbourhood Watch founder Mick Robinson is worried about the organisation’s decline across the city. 153722 (LUKE VOOGT) Police would seek the involvement of more young people and improve social media use to gather additional information for fighting crime, he said. “Social media’s much more immediate than the paper model and community hall meetings.”
Drysdale launched a Neighbourhood Watch last year in response to a vicious backyard assault and multiple burglaries in the town. Ldg Sen Const King said anyone wanting to become involved with Neighbourhood Watch could phone him on 5225 3261.
Climate change is affecting the natural and built environment at Point Roadknight, according to Great Ocean Road Coast Committee. The committee said that in response it was developing a new Roadknight master plan with “management options for the environment, buildings and car parks”.

Anyone who hates a night out can now fail to show up for the ideal non-event: a Geelong winter ball that won’t happen. In an unusual fundraising initiative, disability services provider Karingal and Rotary Club of East Geelong this week announced the ball would “not” be held on 25 June. Confused? We’ll let the organisers explain. “When you’re invited to attend a ball, charity auction or other formal function, don’t you often wish you didn’t have to attend for appearances sake? Well, now you don’t. “To get out of this non-event, all you need to do is make a donation of your choice that will contribute to building the outdoor community area of the fully inclusive Eastern Hub Geelong in East Geelong. “Don’t miss this opportunity to show your support by doing almost nothing.” Well, apparently Karingal supporters can do at least one thing: donate to the Eastern Hub project at trybooking.com/KZFY.

The public transport cops were hanging

around Geelong’s Moorabool Street bus stops on Wednesday morning, armed with clip boards. Actually, ‘cops’ is perhaps too strong a word. Although they police public transport, their uniform doesn’t have quite the same impact. A large panel on the back reading ‘Authorised Officer’ doesn’t sound quite the same. City Hall chief Kelvin Spiller knows that history repeats but now he must wonder whether déjà vu does as well. Double Take was reviewing Kevin’s CV recently when his previous roles as CEO at two other Victorian municipalities stood out like a sore thumb. The councils of Darebin and Wangaratta were, like Geelong, sacked by the State Government. Kelvin oversaw the post-dismissal transition of both, so at least residents can be confident he has the right experience for the job at hand in Geelong.

Minister spruiks ‘intra-city’ trains By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
CONDUCTOR: Jeanette John will give up her favourite baton. 153659 (LOUISA JONES)
Conductor of choir to pass on baton but we have to think about it as a positive change,” she said. “Everyone brings different strengths and it’s time for some fresh blood. I’m sad but it is the right time for me and the choir.” Ms John said the 36-member choir was vibrant and healthy in terms of participants and finances. “It just needs someone to step up, enhance the repertoire and take the choir to a different place.” Ms John had hoped to continue until her 70th birthday in 2018 and to undertake a final tour of Wales while finding her replacement. “But I can’t do it. I’ve run out of energy.” Ms John planned to remain as a chorister but pull back for three months to allow settling-in time for the new director. “There’s power in singing, especially singing together, and for me there’s solace in that.”
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN One of Geelong’s beloved choirs is looking for a new musical director after its long-serving founder decided to pass on the baton. Belmont’s Jeannette John was the driving force behind the formation of Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir more than 18 years ago but personal tragedy has thwarted her succession plan and “taken the wind out of my sails. Under her direction the ladies choir developed an international reputation, touring Wales, New Zealand and Australia. A human resources professional, she used her people skills to develop a group of singers with “an emotional connection almost without speaking to each other”. “It’s a big change for me but also for the choir
Duplicating the South Geelong - Waurn Ponds rail line could lead to new intra-city services, according to Transport Minister Jacinta Allan. Ms Allan said that she was keen to explore the use of rail as a commuter service within Geelong when she visited the city on Thursday “Duplication of this track will mean we can run commuter-style services, for instance from Waurn Ponds to Lara and back.” The State Government’s budget on Wednesday last week allocated $3 million toward a business case for the 15km track duplication. The funding was a “significant” amount for a planning stage because it was a complex project, Ms Allan said. “There are a number of constraints along the corridor, including crossings and bridgeworks. It is a residential area and lots of streets intersect with the rail line. “It’s going to be a complicated piece of infrastructure work.
“The 17km Deer Park to Melton duplication on the Ballarat line is a comparable project that was of part of package of $500,000 worth of works.” Ms Allan also announced an extra 54 off-peak services on the Geelong line from January. The 34 weekend and 20 weekday services would fill increasing demand for off-peak services, she said. “There’s a growing demand right now and we have to plan for the future and we have to get ahead of population growth.” Ms Allan also announced an extra weekday service from Warrnambool to Geelong and back as well as an additional return service from Warrnambool to Melbourne on Sundays. Major improvements to a bus interchange at Deakin University’s Geelong campus, with better shelter, bright lighting and extra seating, were also on the way, she said. Geelong MP Christine Couzens said the city was booming. “We need more trains to Geelong and the growing areas in the south and that’s what this budget delivers.”
Crime forums as top cop speaks up Geelong’s top cop has broken ranks with Victoria Police command on the eve of his retirement to slam resourcing and the justice system. Superintendent Daryl Clifton highlighted the justice system releasing juveniles committing multiple offences and a police force struggling to cope. The State Government’s changes last year prevent police charging children with breaching bail conditions. Supt Clifton cited a mix of factors including unemployment, drugs, violence and youth crime for an explosion in offences such as aggravated burglaries and high-end car theft.
The comments contrast with past police command assertions, including his own, that local staffing was adequate. Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson called on Victorian Attorney-General Martin Pakula to reverse the “damaging” Bail Act changes. “Many local residents across Geelong, the Bellarine and the Surf Coast have raised concerns about the spike in crime across our region,” she said. Ms Henderson is to hold law-and-order forums on 18 May at 5.30pm in Barwon Heads Senior Citizens Hall and at 6.45pm in Ocean Grove Bowls Club.

Queenscliff was the only area to significantly improve times, from 21 minutes 26 seconds a year ago to 18 minutes 40 seconds for the last quarter. Ms Hennessy said the State Government funded $144 million to fix the ambulance system. “Our $144 million investment in our ambulance system will drive further improvements in response times, and give Victorians the confidence that in an emergency they will get the care they need, when they need it.” She said the “funding boost” provided in this year’s budget included a $60 million Response Rescue Fund to provide better, faster responses. Average code one response times for the March quarter state-wide improved by five seconds over last year, she said.

Code one ambulance response times in three of Geelong’s four local government areas continued to blow out, the latest performance figures showed. Geelong’s average code one response time was 13 minutes and 28 seconds, up 10 seconds over last quarter and up 18 seconds over the quarter before that. This was despite Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Jill Hennessy claiming in a media release that Geelong’s Code One average ambulance response times improved by seven seconds. That was compared to a year earlier, but Geelong response times increased over the last three quarters. Response times for Golden Plains continued to lag woefully behind, fluctuating between 21 minutes 19 seconds a year ago to 20 minutes 51

Geelong research a devil face saver
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN
Geelong research could stop a deadly cancer that put Tasmanian devils on the endangered list, according to Deakin University. The key could be natural antibodies from the marsupial’s own immune system, said Dr Beata Ujvari, from Deakin’s Centre for Integrative Ecology. Her work at the Waurn Pond campus compared immune system molecules from devils with and without the facial tumour disease. The findings could halt the spread of the cancer, which had been devastating devil populations since it was identified in 1996, Dr Ujvari said. “We know from human and animal studies that certain natural antibodies are able to recognise and kill cancerous cells, so we wanted to see whether the presence of these molecules would also determine tumour development in Tasmanian devils. “We found that devils that have a higher ratio of these natural antibodies were less likely to have cancer. We can deduce then that devils with a higher natural antibody ratio are therefore less susceptible to the contagious cancer.” Dr Ujvari’s research was published in the latest edition of Nature Scientific Reports. Dr Ujvari said that because the cancer was transmitted from devil to devil, their immune system should recognise the cells as foreign objects, like a pathogen, and work to eliminate them from the victim’s system. “However, this disease’s cells are able to avoid recognition by the devils’ immune systems and develop into large ulcerating tumours that ultimately kill the animals. In 2009 the Australian Government listed the Tasmanian devil as endangered under national environmental law. Dr Ujvari’s research was a collaborative effort with researchers from other universities, government departments and a Save the Tasmanian Devil Program.
A new focus on fighting “atrocious” youth unemployment statistics has launched in Geelong. Geelong Region Local Learning and Employment Network (GRLLEN) this week unveiled a new website linking young jobseekers with potential employers in a bid to attack the region’s high youth unemployment rate. GRLLEN’s Anne-Marie Ryan said Geelong’s youth unemployment averaged 16.9 per cent but was as high as 24 per cent in some areas. “That’s an atrocious statistic,” Ms Ryan said. She blamed the figures on low Year 12 attainment rates and only 50 per cent of students completing university courses or apprenticeships. “Many young people who left school but did not have a job or course to study are sitting at home with false expectations of what the job market is like,” Ms Ryan said. Geelong was13th in the top 20 youth unemployment hotspots in a Brotherhood of St Laurence report in March. The report said Geelong had the second highest youth unemployment rate in Victoria after Melbourne’s western suburbs. Ms Ryan said a regional snapshot showed high levels of youth unemployment were endemic to the Geelong region and continued to rise. At the same time the overall participation rate for Geelong has dropped to 54.8 per cent compared to 64.4 per cent for Victoria, she said. Ms Ryan believed that current youth unemployment figures understated reality because many young people had given up looking for work, so they were not included in statistics. “Job creation is lagging behind population growth and is being offset by retrenchments.” The new website, experienceforworkforyoungpeople.com.au, focused on retaining students in school and motivating them to attain Year 12, Ms Ryan said. Eighty employers were on board so far but worringly 175 had declined, she said.
JOBS: Project manager Robyn Dolheguy and Western Heights College's Miriam Day at the launch. “We have 194 placements so far but we’d love for more employers to join with us." The website operates in conjunction with geelongcareers.org.au and with the supported of 24
regional secondary schools. Ms Ryan said more information was available by phoning GRLLEN project manager Robyn Dolheguy on 0448 883 534.

HOLES: Richard Marles
MYSTERY: Elaine Carbines.
Mixed reaction to budget of mystery This week’s Federal Budget was a mystery for the Geelong region, according to the chief of a local lobby group. G21’s Elaine Carbines said the true nature of the budget for the region was unlikely to be known for some time, with funding announcements possible during the coming election campaign. “From an initial scan of the budget papers there are few new specific project commitments for our region, Ms Carbines said. “However, as always, the true complexion of the budget will reveal itself over coming days and weeks. “That will be particularly so this year, with the unusual situation where the budget has been delivered so close to an expected election. “The budget appears to contain funding for as yet unspecified local initiatives nationally. “I look forward to the G21 region being part of any such funding announcements. In what was seen as a lukewarm budget, finding pros and cons was a difficult task, but Liberal member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson found a few goodies for Geelong in its voluminous pages. “There’s great news for our region in this year’s budget with an extra $30.6 million for Corangamite
1224472-EG15-16
roads, Ms Henderson declared. This included $25 million for the Great Ocean Road upgrade, bringing total funding to $50 million. There was also $300,000 for feasibility planning for the duplication of the Midland Highway between Geelong and Bannockburn and a similar amount for planning to duplicate Grubb Road, Ocean Grove. There was also $1.5 million for capital works for a new Foundation 61 drug and alcohol Women’s Rehabilitation Facility. On the other hand, Labor member for Corio Richard Marles was able to pick some holes in the budget. “Malcolm Turnbull promised new economic leadership but this budget goes backwards on Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey’s best effort, Mr Marles said. “The deficit is $11 billion worse next year, and worse in every year of the forward estimates. The Liberals have blown out the deficit by $36 billion since the 2015 Budget. “What’s worse is that this mess of a balance sheet is built on highly optimistic forecasts. “When the economy is chugging along so slowly that the Reserve Bank of Australia has cut interest rates, that’s a faintly heroic assumption.

Dry, hot weather pushing records UNDER THE WEATHER Lindsay Smail April was very warm across the Geelong region, around two degrees Celsius higher than the latest 30-year average. The mean monthly temperature finished at 17.1 Celsius, a big difference to the normal mean of 15.1. It was the second warmest April on record since 1903. The warmest was in 1968 when the monthly mean reached 17.5 Celsius. Geelong’s highest temperature for the month was 31.7 Celsius on 5 April. The month had two days that recorded maximums over 30 Celsius. The warmest overnight temperature was on 28 April when 19.9 Celsius was recorded just before the 9am cut-off. In terms of other weather events, April delivered a very stable month to the Geelong region. No strong wind gusts over 60km/h were recorded while storm and thunder days were also absent the entire month. Unfortunately, the lack of weather events meant a disappointing month for rainfall as well. Only 23.4mm was recorded at Geelong’s official weather station in Breakwater. Eight days of the month had rain, with the most on 22 April with 6.4mm and on 30 April when 7.8mm was recorded.

POUR RESULT: Geelong weatherman Lindsay Smail awaits more rain after a dry, hot April. Most areas in the region only received around 50 per cent of the normal 30-year average for the month. The result was that the region’s water supplies finished the month around 32 per cent of capacity. Our reservoirs are now being augmented with water from aquifers and some Melbourne storages. The latest outlook is for slightly more rain over the May-to-July period, which seems likely with the current demise of El Nino. *Lindsay Smail operates Geelong Weather Services

ART DIRECTION: Geoffrey Edwards and Jason Smith renew acquaintanceships.
Gallery boss hands over to old mate By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN They’re like two old mates having a chat about art. And they are, except that one is the incoming and the other is the outgoing director of Geelong Gallery. Geoffrey Edwards handed over the reins to Jason Smith last week after guiding the gallery for 15 years. “Jason and I have known each other for some years and it’s great to be able to hand over to someone and know it will be in safe hands,” Mr Edwards said. Mr Edwards has already jumped into life as an art consultant, with clients lined up.
Mr Smith said he would take the first 100 days to familiarise himself with the gallery and its collections. Despite not officially starting until Monday Mr Smith was already attending planning meetings with other Geelong cultural precinct stakeholders. Mr Smith said he came from a contemporary art background but deeply appreciated the historical collection amassed by Geelong Gallery. “It’s become part of Geelong history and has led to the gallery being among the foremost regional galleries in Australia, so it really is an honour to be here.”
Coroner sounds drugs death alarm From page 1 “Since then there has been a rise in the use of prescription or over-the-counter painkillers related to heroin, like morphine. More recently there has been a clampdown on prescription drugs, with tougher monitoring of them and increased education of doctors around their risks. “There have also been changes to the way these drugs are made so they cannot be injected now. “It looks like we have come full circle. Added to that is that whereas heroin use was once part of a youth culture, it’s spread across a greater
demographic these days.” Dr Frei said a real-time prescription-monitoring system would help account for the amount of prescription dugs available. “But that alone won’t solve the problem. There needs to be more information and education available as well. “Drug and alcohol services are pretty modest in Victoria, yet drugs are such an entrenched part of society. “Given the prominence of drug use we need a proportionately strong drug and alcohol sector in the medical field to respond.”

Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.
If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.
On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.
Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.
If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.

Charity boss wins Lyons’ share of lobby body G21 A charity executive has taken over as chairman of a group lobbying for major projects across the Geelong region. G21 named Bill Mithen to replace Darryn Lyons, whose chairmanship concluded when the Andrews Government sacked him as Geelong’s mayor with the rest of council earlier this month. Mr Mithen is chief executive officer of Give Where You Live, which gathers financial support for local welfare agencies. He was previously with Save the Children Australia. G21 is an alliance of local government, business and community groups advocating for various projects with economic and social benefits for Geelong, the Surf Coast, Queenscliff, Golden Plains and Colac Otway. Mr Mithen was named chairman after 17 months on G21’s board. “I’m honoured by the appointment,” he said. “Since joining the G21 board I’ve come to fully appreciate the breadth and magnitude of G21’s work. “I’ve been especially pleased to help build the relationship between the Give Where You Live Foundation and G21 to implement the GROW (Geelong Region Opportunities for Work) project, targeting entrenched place-based regional disadvantage. “G21 has earned the respect of both sides of politics because it has demonstrated over time that it has the region’s best interests at heart. “Much has been achieved by G21 for the region over more than 12 years. I will work to ensure that record of achievement continues. “The region has big challenges ahead of it, with equally big opportunities.”
ON BOARD: New G21 chairman Bill Mithen.

One-man council dumps rates rise Geelong’s council has withdrawn its application to break the State Government’s rates cap. The council had applied to levy a 3.5 per cent charge, one per cent above the cap, but dumped the bid today after identifying savings of $1.7 million to cover the difference in revenue. The decision will save residential ratepayers around $12 on average for their next rates bill compared to what they would have paid if the cap was exceeded. Geelong’s sacked council applied to the Essential Services Commission for the higher rate in January but the council’s replacement, interim administrator Yehudi Blacher, decided to withdraw the application today. City chief executive officer Kelvin Spiller said the identified cost savings were: $800,000 deferred from the cancellation of council elections in October; a saving of $100,000 in allowances for the sacked councillors; and a deletion of $400,000 in non-capital projects. “These savings of Yehudi Blacher $1.7 million offset the $1.6 million council had planned to raise through a 3.5 per cent average rate rise,” Mr Spiller said. “At the same time, we remain confident of delivering a balanced and financially sustainable budget for 2016/17.” Mr Blacher considered the rate application in special meeting of his one-man council. “Based on this revised financial outlook, this afternoon I formally endorsed the withdrawal of council’s earlier application to the ESC for a 3.5 per cent average rate rise for 2016/17,” he said. The council’s proposed budget for 2016/2017 will be tabled for public consultation at the next ordinary meeting of council, at 7pm on 10 May.

‘Deadly road’ set for safety upgrade The Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road is a direct north-south link between Geelong, Bacchus Marsh and Melton, providing a key freight route between Geelong, Bacchus Marsh and Western Victoria. We are aware of the challenges on this road. There have been far too many crashes, particularly on the 12 kilometre section between Little River Ripley Road and Ballan Road. Any proposal for the road would be “squarely focused on improving safety but we need input from the locals that use the road,” Mr Koliba said. His team would host three “information gathering sessions” to help develop the proposal, he said. The sessions will be: 4.30pm to 7pm on 5 May at Bacchus Marsh Library, 4pm to 7pm on 11 May at Balliang East Primary School; and 4pm to 7pm on 12 May at Northern Bay Secondary College Goldsworthy Campus, Corio.

Seven deaths in five years could lead to upgrade works on a notorious stretch of road near Geelong. VicRoads is seeking public input on how motorists “use” Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road, particularly the stretch between Little River Ripley and Ballan roads. “Between July 2008 and June 2013 there have been 19 crashes in this section of road alone. Tragically, seven people died,” said VicRoads southwest regional director Mark Koliba. “The majority of crashes in recent years have involved vehicles crossing the centreline of the road. We’re working hard to prepare a proposal that is squarely focused on improving safety but we need input from the locals that use the road.” VicRoads had no funding commitment for any upgrade of the road but wanted to develop a proposal for consideration, Mr Koliba said.

GONE: Vietnam vets Ken Baker and Reiny Nieuwenhof have won their battle to have a billboard on Melbourne Road’s avenue of honour removed.
Sign of respect A North Geelong billboard that veterans said disrespected the memory of fallen diggers will be removed. They campaigned for more than two years for the Geelong council billboard to be removed from the middle of the Vietnam veterans Avenue of Honour on Melbourne Road. Geelong Vietnam Veterans Association president Reiny Nieuwenhof said the organisation was delighted at the announcement. Mr Nieuwenhof said the move restored the integrity of the Vietnam Veterans Avenue of Honour in time for August’s 50-year commemoration of the Battle of Long Tan. He said the association had worked for more than two years to create a $130,000 legacy Vietnam veterans memorial. The memorial includes an honour roll commemorating the 521 diggers who lost their lives in the Vietnam conflict. The project included creation of a memorial park with a paved pathway on the corner of Swinburne Street.
He said a bike path would be constructed on the western side of the avenue from Swinburne Street to the Separation Street overpass. The Vietnam veterans would march along the path to the new memorial park on 14 August as part of the 50-year anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. City of Greater Geelong community life general manager Linda Quinn said a heritage overlay at the site of the Vietnam Veterans Avenue of Honour would be included. “The City of Greater Geelong acknowledges the contribution of Australians who served in the Vietnam War and the significance of the Vietnam Veterans Avenue of Honour,” Ms Quinn said. She said the community billboard was originally developed as a community safety initiative, championed by Barwon CASA and Victoria Police. “We still have other options for community groups wanting to share their events through our community promotion signs which are available for hire at various locations across Geelong,” she said.

Letters Labor’s administrator
Unhappy feat
Should we in Geelong be pleased an administrator has been appointed to replace elected councillors to run our city (Geelong Indy, 22 April)? Any decisions are likely to be Melbournecentric, such as on Avalon Airport, bicycle races and sports events to be held in this city. Labor is renowned for poor decisions on spending and highlighting Melbourne at every chance with little regard for responsible use of taxpayers’ funds. Geelong and district residents are proud of this part of the state of Victoria and have no wish to become a Melbourne clone with high-rise eyesores et cetera. Pricilla Wright Newtown
The State Government’s budget included $48.2 million to upgrade Phillip Island’s penguin parade. Earlier this month $250,000 was set aside for CCTV to protect penguins at St Kilda. Bellarine MP Lisa Neville welcomed both funding allocations but made no indication of trying to bring CCTV to her electorate through the Government’s announced $250,000 security grants (Geelong Indy, 22 April) now available to councils under the Public Safety Infrastructure Fund. I’m not sure what her fascination is with penguins but while they’re getting all this attention and funding her constituents at Drysdale are begging for CCTV funding and the region’s crime rates are going through the roof.
Drysdale has experienced a 400 per cent rise in assaults since 2012 while thefts are up 150 per cent at Ocean Grove compared to 2013. I’ve spoken to residents across Bellarine who are concerned about safety and crime. It’s absurd that penguins seem to have a greater capacity to find Government support than taxpayers living in those areas. The minister is yet to offer any justification for this strategy of penguins before people. We shouldn’t have to bring penguins to Bellarine just to get her attention and some muchneeded funding. Her electorate has a significant problem with the increasing crime rate and she needs to prove she cares by making sure some of the announced CCTV grants go to the City of Greater Geelong. Simon Ramsay MP Member for Western Victoria

Emissions fluorosis fears On 22 April the Geelong Indy reported that the EPA had fined Viva’s Geelong refinery for emitting excessive amounts of fluoride four times since November 2015. This was deeply concerning because no one monitors the impact of these kinds of excessive fluoride emissions on the community’s health, air shed, plants, soil and waterways. Did the EPA notify the Department of Human Services and Barwon Water of this breach of excessive pollution so Barwon Water could lower the amount of fluoride dosed into Geelong consumer’s water or will the parents of children affected by dental fluorosis find out in the future when they look at their children’s mottled teeth? Stephen Juhasz Barwon Association for Freedom from Fluoridation president
Dental costs bite My wife, an invalid pensioner, had the misfortune to suffer a gum infection. She subsequently went to a private hospital as a walk-in/walk-out patient for a tooth extraction. The total cost to have the tooth pulled was $1452.95. S Scott Hamlyn Heights
Climate spending kills poor The juxtaposition of Peter Rees’ and Jukka Tuisku’s letters (Geelong Indy, 29 April) displayed that one was looking at the negative impacts of renewable energy on society while the other was simply playing the man. It’s all very well to be concerned about the environment. However, it’s more important to save the economy and to address the real needs of millions around the globe suffering malnutrition and in desperate need of clean running water and medical assistance. In the book Cool it, Bjorn Lomborg made the point that one billion of these people have been pushed aside while the industrialised world squanders hundreds of billions of dollars trying to ameliorate the impacts of mankind’s carbon emissions in the esoteric pursuit of addressing climate change. The capital needed to feed the world’s undernourished people is $14 billion. However, only $2.1 billion is spent on food aid. It’s estimated that providing every person on the planet with clean running water would cost US $114 billion. But the world spent around US $359 billion a year for the past three years, according to a new Climate Policy Initiative study, on combating climate change. That’s over US $1 trillion, all to reduce the temperature by an estimated .1C! For a fraction of the money spent on climate change we could virtually reduce, if not eliminate, poverty, malnutrition and many diseases afflicting millions with death and misery. It’s time we made more-compassionate choices. Alan Barron Grovedale
We’re all on this ageing journey together. What’s most important is that we don’t lose the one thing that really matters, just to get the care we all eventually need.
Germans nuke their future
I mean, what’s life without freedom – the everyday freedom to come and go and be and do as you please in the privacy and comfort of your own home. Why live alone when you can surround yourself with wonderful new friends in a vibrant, caring community that celebrates every day to the full and treats you with all the kindness, decency, love and respect you deserve. That’s what I call freedom. If you would like to know how call 1800 984 840 today.

this can be a wonderful time of life,
Peter Rees’s carefully presented statistics on Germany’s transition from fossil fuels to renewables found no favour with Jukka Tuisku who called them “so-called facts” without offering any facts to dispute them. He wrote of “global warming science” but it was never science; it was politics masquerading as science. Now it’s economics, and Europe and Britain, being first to try killing the power that brought us to modern living, are showing us the cost. The intermittency of solar and wind means that Germany not only relies on neighbouring countries for energy to fill the gap when sun and wind fail but has to keep its own coal-fired plants running at a loss for inevitable emergencies. Nuclear is the only so-called green power available but Germany is in the process of shutting down its state-of-the-art nuke plants. If Germany is, as Mr Tuisku wrote, “investing in the world’s future”, the prospect is not encouraging. Tim Saclier Leopold

In songs and stories he’s digging deep for Diggers By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Lee Kernaghan calls Geelong a “city with a great big country heart”. Visits to the home of the Cats have been a regular item on his itinerary in the 24 years since his first song Boys from the Bush, was released in April 1992. The experiences of traversing the country have come out in his many songs since and will be front and centre when Kernaghan revisits Geelong this month. “I like to tell a few yarns and anecdotes as to how some of those songs came to be,” Kernaghan drawled. “It takes people on a rollicking ride across Australia. It’s the music of our country and our way of life and I love being able to tell the story.” As well as taking in all the hits from Kernaghan’s amazing career, the show is also a mark of respect for the stories of the Anzacs. Kernaghan’s Songs and the Stories tour will feature special highlight performances from his latest release, Spirit of the Anzacs. “It was a true privilege to have been a part of the making of the album and such an emotional and moving experience to bring the stories of our Diggers to life once more in song,” Kernaghan said. The album, based on the stories and diary entries of servicemen and women from Gallipoli to Afghanistan, struck an immediate chord with Australians. The album not only went platinum within three weeks but dominated the ARIA all genre album chart by holding the top position for four weeks in a row.
STORYTELLER: Lee Kernaghan loves telling Aussie stories in song. It was an epic project, Kernaghan admits, a couple of years in the research and writing with the support of the historical department at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. “We worked closely with them to ensure authenticity of everything we did,” Kernaghan explained. “It was an incredible privilege to be part of it, so powerful and moving. There’s a certain amount of magic when you combine the words of our Diggers with music.” That feeling is only enhanced by having family members and sometimes Diggers themselves present in the audience.
“The overwhelming sense you get is pride and appreciation for what they done for us. It always feels like something special is about to happen when we go out on stage.” Kernaghan praised fellow musicians Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy, Sheppard, Shannon Noll, Jon Stevens and Megan Washington who also donated time and talent to the project. He said 100 per cent of all proceeds from the Spirit of the Anzacs song and music video would go to Legacy Australia and Soldier On. Kernaghan’s Songs and the Stories tour comes to Costa Hall on 20 May at 8pm. Bookings through GPAC on 5225 1200 or at gpac.org.au
Short of fame By ALANA MITCHELSON Geelong residents will have the opportunity for 10 seconds of fame when The Democratic Set returns to Geelong. Bruce Gladwin’s team from Back to Back Theatre will capture four hours of film with the public invited to take part in the contemporary community theatre installation. Participants could either prepare or improvise a short creative sequence to be shot in a purpose-built “neutral” set, he explained. The Democratic Set had been filmed in more than 25 cities around the world to explore themes of equality, Gladwin said. “The concept behind The Democratic Set is to capture amazing moments. “People can sing, play an instrument, dance or simply stand still. We encourage people of all ages, too. It’s usually most effective when we get a variety of performers. “What’s great about it is that the end result is completely reliant on who turns up on the day. You never know what ideas people will bring to the table and sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised with what people come up with.” Each performer would have about 15 minutes to explain their idea and prepare before shooting their 10-second scene. Gladwin said his team had already locked in a 40-piece Geelong choir, a brass band and a bagpipes player. He hoped to attract musically minded people and was especially keen to feature a drummer. The Democratic Set will take place between 6pm and 10pm on Friday night, 6 May, at Geelong’s Old Courthouse Building. The film will be available this month at democraticset.backtobacktheatre.com.

Poker night to counter cancer Sports celebrities will lay their cards on the table at a charity poker night in North Geelong next week. Shane Warne, Billy Brownless, Brian Taylor and Brendan Fevola are scheduled to attend Geelong’s All In For Charity at the Sphinx Hotel on 11 May. The event will raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Australian poker champion Joe Hachem’s management group has organised the “celebrity fundraising poker night” based on the internationally successful Texas Hold’em format.
SHELL CLUB
The Hachem version was becoming “one of Melbourne’s most sought after and high-profiled social fundraisers,” his company said. The company sought support from Geelong through either donations of fundraising items or buying tables of 10 or tickets for the Sphinx night. Patrons would vie for prizes worth over $50,000, the company said. The proceeds from the Geelong poker night would help NBCF “realise its vision of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.” More information about the Sphinx event is available at hachemgroup.com.au.

Inspired by the love of his mother and grandmother, Le Thai Chef ’s kitchen maestro Sun is pulling out all the stops for this Mother’s Day. Having grown up in the kitchen of the family restaurants in Saraburi, Thailand, chef Sun learned his traditional Thai cooking secrets from his mum and grandmother. He says his love for cooking is closely intertwined with his love for the women in his family. This Mother’s Day, chef Sun has put on his best, drawing on his traditional Thai cooking expertise combined with his cordon bleu cuisine. He sees it as a dedication not only to his mum, but to all the Geelong mums he has gotten to know over the past two years. Sun says he loves it when he gets to meet mums when they come into Le Thai Chef.

HEALTHY LIVING Laser hair removal gets to the point GONE are the days of time consuming waxing and shaving of underarms, bikini lines, legs, arms, lips, chins and, for the guys, chests and abdomens. Now, a few simple laser treatments can reduce the unwanted hair. “Now is the best time to begin a hair reduction program and you’ll be hitting the beach next summer with smooth, silky hair free legs,” said dermal clinician Fiona Priddle. A medical grade laser treatment is a fast and effective way to get rid of unwanted body and facial hair. Laser uses a beam of light that is absorbed by the pigment in hair and skin and is converted to heat. The heat damages the hair follicle so further hair cannot grow. Laser hair removal works best on dark hair and light, untanned skin. Those who have fair hair may be unsuitable for laser hair removal and, due to the lack of pigment, laser will not work on red, white or grey hair. “The number of treatments required varies from person to person and factors such as age, medication and hormones can play a part in the success of the treatments,” she said. “Each hair follicle goes through a different growth phase; laser works when your hair is in its active growth stage.”
Fiona Priddle will have your hair today gone tomorrow. Australian Skin Face Body has a medical grade laser that can be far more effective than, say, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal. The Candela Gmax Pro TM used at Australian Skin Face Body is one of the most comfortable and effective lasers used to safely target pigmentation in the hair. Laser is not only for hair removal. Australian Skin Face Body also has laser treatments for skin rejuvenation, facial pigmentation, acne and the latest Vbeam vascular laser to treat facial capillaries, redness and rosacea. For details call the clinic on 5221 2238.

Sore Feet or Legs? Call
Most foot and leg pains can be easily treated.
More than 80 per cent of Australians will experience serious foot and leg problems at some point in their lives. The most common foot and leg ailments include shin pain, Achilles concerns, ankle pain or injury, arch and heel pain, which is most commonly referred to and often incorrectly diagnosed as Plantar Fasciitis, bunions and knee pain, injuries and arthritis. All of these can be caused or aggravated by faulty biomechanics and/or bad foot posture continually pulling the body out of alignment. Most of these concerns, however, can be quite easily addressed if diagnosed correctly and treated appropriately. Dr David Kavanagh, a musculoskeletal and sports podiatrist at one of Australia’s leading foot and leg pain and injury practices said: “At our Foot
and Leg Pain clinics we see so many people who have been incorrectly diagnosed and have been provided unsuitable or inappropriate treatment. “Many others are being told that nothing can be done for them or that surgery and medication are their only options, which is so often just not the case. “With correct diagnosis, the utilization of the latest medically researched treatments and appropriate application, we’re able to treat most foot and leg pain quite easily, even cases that have been untreatable in the past, which is really exciting,” he said. So don’t just put up with foot and leg pain, injury or arthritis. Foot and Leg Pain Clinics are located in Geelong, Werribee and across Melbourne. For an appointment call 1300 328 300.

The Bellarine Police Community Support Register is governed by a Volunteer Committee of Management, overseeing the development and operational activities of the organisation, providing support to the volunteers. A number of our existing Committee Members will be retiring at the end of June after a number of years of support so we are now looking for the next wave of volunteers who will continue to provide the same passion and support of those in need on the Bellarine Peninsula. Someone’s watching out for you. 153752
A service that’s looking out for you They’re keeping an eye out for Bellarine Peninsula residents, especially those living on their own. The Bellarine Police Community Support Register is a confidential register of personal information that is voluntarily provided by people living on the Bellarine Peninsula, in conjunction with Bellarine police. It costs nothing to register, just a few moments to complete a registration form. Joining the community register can provide registrants, their relatives and friends with greater peace of mind. The information provided is stored on a confidential database and can only be accessed by the police and other emergency services in order to assist approved authorities with information required during medical or other emergencies. Registrants are issued with an ID card along with a sticker for the front door. In the event of an emergency, or when a family member or neighbour cannot contact you, the police are able to use the database to contact your next of kin or visit
your home to check that you are OK. With the start of winter and colder weather some of our Bellarine residents won’t be getting out as much and may feel a bit isolated. To counter this we offer a phone service where our volunteers call the registrants who request it and keep in contact regularly just checking if things are OK. Sadly, for some this is often the only contact they might have with another person that day. The register has a team of 25 dedicated policeapproved volunteers who work from the Bellarine Police Station at Ocean Grove every weekday morning. If you know someone who would benefit from the services provided by the Bellarine Police Community Support Register, please tell them about the service or contact the organisation for more information and a registration form. Visit online at www.bellarineregister.org.au Phone 5255 3968.

VOLUNTEER WEEK Helpers making a tangible difference Did you know that every year St Laurence Community Service’s volunteers donate over 20,000 hours of service to a diverse range of consumers? Currently, St Laurence has more than 200 generous volunteers who give freely of their time to help others who come to St Laurence for support and advice. So many volunteers provide vital assistance to support St Laurence to achieve the vision of working “together to innovate and build resilient, inclusive communities to help people reach their full potential.” Still finding joy in volunteering after 28 years, Mrs Edna Edge is one of St Laurence’s longest serving volunteers. During her time supporting others, Edna has become a valued member of the extended family life at St Laurence’s Costa House, aged care residential service. “I started volunteering 28 years ago, and I haven’t looked back since. I love spending time with residents and staff. I really find it very fulfilling because I know I make a difference.” Edna initially assisted with the morning and afternoon tea trolley rounds at Costa House in 1988. Now she manages the kiosk where she not only runs a tight commercial business but keeps in touch with the tastes of the residents and their families by mak-

Bringing back wildlife after the fires HelpOUT is an initiative of Volunteering Victoria in partnership with Volunteering Geelong and Volunteering Queensland. HelpOUT emergency volunteering service, recently piloted in Geelong and surrounding regions, has made its first volunteer match in the Wye River community. Two volunteers, Neil Fisher and Brendon Brackin, partnered with Southern Otway Landcare Network to help distribute habitat kits to the area impacted by bushfires last Christmas. The habitat kits, also known as ‘bird boxes’, will provide essential relief to the birdlife that lost food and shelter in the blaze which also destroyed 116 homes. A total of 50 boxes were couriered from Monbulk in Melbourne’s East to Wye River by the HelpOUT volunteers. Neil said the process was simple and well organised, and his volunteering activity “went like a welloiled machine”. He is now encouraging others to register with HelpOUT at emergencyvolunteering. force.com/registervic which was developed to connect Victorians with communities impacted by an emergency. Neil registered as a HelpOUT volunteer because he wanted to support the Wye community’s recovery, saying HelpOUT is “such a great idea”. He recruited his Wye River neighbour Brendon and the pair delivered the boxes to Wye River CFA in time for the local Easter fete. The bird boxes are available from the Wye Weed Warriors, a group of local landowners lobbying to restore the natural environment in Wye River. Please contact Rex Brown at rexmbrown@gmail.com if you are interested in one for your property. The Warriors will also run a workshop on how to help endangered wildlife and plants over the Queen’s

SPORT Weather key to worthy catches ON THE BITE Chris Pitman
TOP CATS: The pairing of Joel Selwood and Paddy Dangerfield is drawing equal attention from the media and opposition each week.
Many eyes on danger pair By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN It’s not just the media’s lauding of dynamic Geelong duo Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield that irks coach Chris Scott. Opposition players single them out as well in preparation for meeting the Cats. West Coast Eagles defender Sam Butler nominated the challenge presented by the pair on Saturday afternoon as one to embrace. Butler said he was excited to see the midfield juggernauts firsthand. “They are great at winning their own ball, which is a great thing about those two, and they’re great players to watch - I enjoy watching them too,” Butler said. “We’ll get up close and personal this week.” Geelong’s midfield will get firsthand knowledge about West Coast from its former vice-captain and recruit Scott Selwood, who was an integral part of the Eagles engine room. Selwood is still on Geelong’s long-term injury list but his information on West Coast will be a help this week.
The Eagles will arrive at Simonds Stadium determined to end their run of away losses despite a six day break. West Coast has beaten Brisbane, Fremantle, Richmond and Collingwood at home so far, while suffering away losses to Hawthorn and Sydney. Late last season West Coast went down to Adelaide and of course lost the grand final to Hawthorn. Coach Adam Simpson said meeting Geelong on its home ground was “a great challenge, it’s good for us. We’re excited by it”. Simpson admitted the team had made some changes to its away game preparation to no avail. “How do you look at it when you’re in front halfway through the third quarter against Sydney? Do you put it down to how you prepare? I’m not quite sure. “It’s probably mindset and the fact we’re playing bloody good sides away from home. “So until we win, I’ve just got to cop these questions.” Add to that the fact that the Eagles have not beaten Geelong at Simonds Stadium for a decade,
and the task clear. But Butler said playing at Simonds Stadium should hold West Coast in good stead, being a long and narrow ground similar to Domain Stadium. “You don’t want a team to have the wood over you for that long,” he said. “It’s a big game for our season going forward. Like the week just gone we will attack the game playing the best football we possibly can.” Meanwhile Scott has the luxury of mixing and matching players as he develops depth in the squad by sharing game time around. “We’re a long way from being settled on what our best 22 is. In fact, we don’t really have a best 22,” Scott said. “We pick the best team we can each week and try to work on getting a big group of players who can contribute throughout the year. The Cats have used 27 players during the first six rounds of the season while still “managing” players.
Australian salmon featured in anglers’ bags over the past week, with fish taken from Apollo Bay all the way through to Geelong’s harbour. Tackleworld Geelong’s Michael Moore spun up a couple of 1kg fish at Point Lonsdale’s back beach on Saturday while using a 25g Sluk lure. Later in the day Michael headed across to Bancoora Beach with the aim of using his fresh salmon to catch gummy shark. The gummies didn’t play the game but a number of anglers caught salmon to 2kg. Most of the beaches and rock platforms along the coast have been producing fish to similar size. Otway Sportfishing Club hosted its annual ANSA convention at Apollo Bay over the weekend, with great weather on Saturday and wild conditions on Sunday. A great range of species was taken, notable catches including John McGregor’s 21.8kg gummy on 6kg line and Marcus Sturzaker’s 19.63kg tuna, also on 6kg line. Whiting, snapper, flathead, school shark and trevally also featured in anglers' captures. Southern bluefin tuna really started to fire up over the past week, with fish of all sizes taken from Portland to Apollo Bay. Most were in the 10kg-to-20kg range but the odd larger fish to over 100kg was also taken. Pakula and Richter skirts as well as Rapala Xraps were the most consistent lures. Anglers reported that most fish were taken on larger skirted lures, with fish found feeding on prolific mackerel schools. Some anglers capitalised on settled conditions last week to fish the deeper water off Barwon Heads. Anchoring in 40m was the most productive, with some nice gummies and snapper boated. Patient anglers prepared to burley for a few hours were rewarded with impressive fish, including gummies over 15kg and snapper to 5kg. Whiting continued biting well right around the Bellarine Peninsula. Queenscliff held fish to 45cm, while good bags were taken off St Leonards and Indented on tenderised squid and pippies. Land-based anglers also caught some impressive bags of whiting, especially at St Leonards and Portarlington Pier. Both locations also fished well for squid to 2kg on size 3 Yamashita jigs. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir continued producing quality redfin. Tackleworld Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt tried the new Entice soft tail vibe lure, bagging a fish on his first cast before landing a dozen more to 45cm. Adam said casting long and a slow, steady retrieve were the key to bagging the redfin. Anglers thinking of fishing the reservoir need to observe restrictions on wading and ensure they take their rubbish home. The next week should present opportunities to fish for whiting in the bays or salmon along the coast when the weather permits.
NBA ‘stars’ to scout top talent at Geelong skills camp Stars of the world’s greatest basketball league will bring a new talent-spotting camp to Geelong next month, Victoria’s Sport Minister has announced. The former players from American’s National Basketball Association (N BA) would visit the city with ex-coaches to “help uncover the next international sensation”, said Corio MP John Eren. Hosting the first Basketball Without Borders NBA Camp in Australia was a coup for Geelong, he said. Forty of the “most talented young players” 34 GEELONG INDY Friday, 6 May, 2016
from the Asia-Pacific region would attend. Mr Eren said the five-day training camp would begin in Melbourne before a boys and girls allstar game at North Geelong’s The Arena. He called Basketball Without Borders “a great chance for the stars of tomorrow to stake their claim for a career in the big time”. The camp was also an opportunity to “grow the game at a grassroots level and encourage social change”, Mr Eren said. “Basketball in Victoria is in the middle of a
golden era. Our own stars are dominating the NBA like never before and here’s our chance to identify the next generation of champions. “Basketball Without Borders is a great breeding ground for future stars – the numbers prove it – but it’s more than that; it’s about inspiring youngsters to be the best they can be. “This is a great opportunity for Geelong to play its part in helping uncover the next champion Australian basketball player to take the NBA by storm.”
